Matt Jones
Welcome everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Tuesday, June 24th. I'm Matt Jones here. Another sunny, hot day. When I walked outside of my house, it's like walking into an oven. Very, very hot. Is today like when it's supposed to be the worst?
Shannon
Like all this week is supposed to be 96 degrees every day.
Matt Jones
Yeah, just.
Drew
You walked here today?
Matt Jones
No, I just meant when I walked outside of my house. It was absolutely brutal. Plus they've got all that concrete, you know, building the amphitheater and like they start exactly at 8am I guess they have some contract. They can't start because 8am it's just. And it's, you know, that's fine. I'm just. That's how I know that's become my alarm Drew is when they start the concrete turner.
Ryan
Did I see they scheduled their first big concert.
Matt Jones
The Beach Boys. Yeah, There you go. Clark's Poke Shop phone line, first of all, is 859-280-2287. We're not open yet, but we will. Avion auto glass text machine. 772-774-5254 in this dish and sponsored by TJ Smith Law Office called TJ I'll make them pay Now, Shannon. They schedule the first concert for the amphitheater and it's the Beach Boys. And maybe I got a different set of news last week.
Shannon
Okay.
Matt Jones
But I believe that God died, didn't he, last week?
Shannon
Well, he hasn't been in the band in years, so it's really one guy that's the original member.
Matt Jones
So who is the only. Who? What Beach Boy is left?
Shannon
Mike Love, I think is the guy that's left.
Matt Jones
Okay, and how. What about the other boys?
Shannon
The other boys I think are retired or maybe have.
Matt Jones
So how long do they.
Ryan
Beach Boy?
Matt Jones
How long do they get to be the Beach Boys if there are no more Beach Boys?
Shannon
Great questions. Drop the S. Yeah, I think as long as there's one, many of the other ones, I guess become Beach Boys.
Matt Jones
But as long as they originally.
Shannon
I'm probably gonna be wrong about this. I think five.
Matt Jones
So there were five.
Shannon
I might be wrong.
Matt Jones
Let me.
Shannon
Let me look at that.
Matt Jones
All right, so let me go through. Because there are a few bands that do this. How much of Leonard Skynyrd is still alive? Any.
Shannon
I don't think there's. Maybe. Maybe one. Maybe so did.
Matt Jones
So Leonard Skinner may just go in perpetuity.
Shannon
Yeah. I think that's going to be a legend. We're all dead and gone. They'll still be okay.
Matt Jones
What about the one that sings. What do you call it? Journey? Oh, because they don't have even the lead singer. Is there anyone from Journey?
Shannon
They still got a couple of dudes, I think, left in the band.
Matt Jones
So I don't. So to me, and this is just me, when the lead singer goes. I think the group should change the name.
Shannon
No, wait a minute. Now. There are exceptions.
Matt Jones
Like who?
Shannon
AC dc.
Matt Jones
That's true. I do like the second guy.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I got more than I like the first.
Shannon
Bon Scott.
Matt Jones
Yeah. All right. Who else? What other exceptions?
Shannon
That.
Matt Jones
Van Halen.
Shannon
Yeah. Van Halen did it. Yeah.
Matt Jones
Van Halen did it.
Shannon
Yep.
Matt Jones
Well, I'm just saying, when I saw the same announcement you did, they're like, we're opening up the concert. We're opening up the amphitheater with the Beach Boys. And I said, I thought to myself, I just feel like I just mourned that guy.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
How's he already back? It's a tribute show, so it's the actual Beach Boys.
Ryan
Are you going to be out there surfing USA in your backyard?
Matt Jones
Since it's the opening, it'll be kind of cool.
Drew
Yeah.
Shannon
What if John Stamos is there? That would be cool. He tours.
Matt Jones
True. Does he perform?
Shannon
Sometimes he tours with him.
Matt Jones
John Stamos?
Shannon
Yeah. Yeah.
Drew
He's the drums or something. Doesn't he?
Shannon
With him? Yeah. I don't know that he'll be on this tour, but he does sometimes.
Matt Jones
Okay, well, that would be. I don't know, though. Do I want to. Am I excited? Like, I was like, that'll be cool. But if you told me John Stamos was in the next room, I'm not sure. I'd be, like, running over there to get there.
Shannon
No.
Drew
So they kind of. It kind of become a cover band, even though you have one guy with it? Kind of.
Matt Jones
They're covering their own song.
Shannon
Well, let me just say they played at Bourbon and Beyond last year, and I didn't care that it wasn't any original guys. They sounded great. So I would say if you're going for the music itself, it's well worth going.
Matt Jones
Okay, so there you go. So I think it's August 23rd. Beach Boys at the new, extremely nice amphitheater, which, while it's far along, if it's got to be open the 23rd, I'm just telling you, looking at it, they need to hurry. They better be working double time, that's all.
Ryan
Got to get ready for that big debut. That's a good get for. For the first time, I ask you.
Matt Jones
What the park is besides amphitheater and massive playground? Is there.
Ryan
There's walking trail where you can look at the creek.
Matt Jones
But when you say walking trail, is it just walking what used to be the RUP parking lot?
Ryan
I suppose, because it's.
Matt Jones
I mean, I listen. I do. I am praising the amphitheater. I think it's going to be great. But as a park, it's not that much space. Right.
Ryan
I mean, you do live next to the world's tiniest park in Louisville. Parks don't have to have. You know, it doesn't need a roller coaster or anything.
Matt Jones
Just feel like you're talking about park to playground ratio. It feels like they went pretty heavy on the playground.
Ryan
Somebody's already annoyed by the kids in his backyard.
Matt Jones
The playground. Have you seen how big the playground?
Drew
Oh, yes.
Matt Jones
It feels like the playground is as big as the amphitheater.
Drew
I really thought when they were building it, that's gonna be a big water park. It was so big. That big slide looks to me to.
Matt Jones
Just be a playground.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I don't know how many swings they think kids need. The other thing is how many kids are just roaming around downtown looking for a playground.
Drew
You know, like Drew said, you know, the stream, the trees.
Matt Jones
I haven't seen stream. You keep saying of stream. Where's the stream?
Drew
McConnell's Trace. The McConnells Creek. That goes all the way through that side of town and out.
Matt Jones
But does the creek go by Rupp Arena?
Drew
I think it does.
Matt Jones
Where?
Drew
Underground.
Matt Jones
Underground.
Ryan
We're digging it up.
Matt Jones
So we're digging up a creek.
Ryan
Been covered for too long, really.
Drew
And then it. Then it surfaces.
Matt Jones
Are you just making that up?
Drew
No, then it surfaces like out. Out the old Frankfurt Pike.
Matt Jones
But I mean, you're saying that like you're. You're confident. You're telling me they're resurfaced, like a creek is. Is coming out of the ground.
Drew
I think that's the focal point of this whole park is.
Matt Jones
So where is it? I don't see it.
Drew
Maybe that's what they're doing, all the construction, trying to find it.
Ryan
We have to uncover it. It's been covered for so long.
Matt Jones
But, I mean, they're opening in two months. I don't.
Ryan
I haven't seen the grain reveal right before they cut the ribbon. They're like, look, Matt, this creek, it's been here for centuries.
Matt Jones
I mean, maybe I'm missing it.
Ryan
Why did we cover it up in the first place?
Matt Jones
Yeah, why did we cover it up?
Drew
Good point. I have no idea.
Matt Jones
And do creeks work if they're not. If they're covered up with concrete, they're.
Drew
Flowing under the ground, and they're caverns.
Matt Jones
So you're saying there was always a creek under. Did it not mess with the structure of the.
Drew
Don't have a good answer.
Ryan
We've worked around it.
Matt Jones
All right, well, I'm excited to see.
Drew
The creek and the playground.
Matt Jones
Unless you can uncover a creek, Drew, in two months, I'm going to be skeptical that on opening that creek is going to be there.
Ryan
It's just beneath the surface.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Ryan
Town branch, right? That's what it's called. It's the name of the park.
Matt Jones
All right, that's fine.
Ryan
You're going to see it soon. It's going to blow your mind.
Matt Jones
I'm excited about it now. I'm telling you another thing I'm excited about, Shannon, When I saw this video, I thought of you. Okay.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Because, you know, over the years, I. I can't remember what the guy's name is, but do you remember that we had a guy who called the show who said that he could. He could shoot better than everybody and he could teach our team to. To free throw shoot. Do you remember this?
Shannon
Yeah. Yeah, I remember.
Matt Jones
Do you remember this guy?
Shannon
The free throw shooting thing? Remember? And I was terrible.
Matt Jones
Now, do we remember what his name was?
Drew
Didn't he coach you, Shannon, and he give you a coaching lesson?
Shannon
And I did that video, and I was making all those shots, and then we got to the thing, and I actually missed them all. I can't remember his name, though. But I know who you're talking about. Yeah.
Matt Jones
Okay. All right. So here's the reason I say this. I. I'm. I'm on Instagram last night, and I see a video from Mark Stoops or Mark Stoops, Mark Pope come up, and it looks to be Mark Pope when he coached byu.
Drew
Yeah.
Matt Jones
But he's speaking to a group of high school coaches. Okay, okay. And he's speaking to a group of high school coaches. And he's talking about shooting. And in the video, he basically says, hey, when I am out recruiting people, I don't look for kids that don't have good shooting mechanics. If you don't have good shooting mechanics, I. I don't want you. That's essentially what he says now. He was like, if I. If you have a minor problem that I think I can fix, I will. But if you can't, if you don't have good shooting mechanics, I can't have you because I can't teach you shooting mechanics because you've probably already shot so much. They're. The bad ones are ingrained in. That's basically what he said.
Drew
Okay.
Matt Jones
All right. I don't see anything controversial by that. Just so you can. The video. Is it 90. The number 90% hoops Instagram account.
Drew
Okay.
Matt Jones
It's actually an interesting video about Mark talking about his philosophy when he's looking at players. But he's telling this group of high school coaches, you guys need to teach your kids shooting mechanics because we don't have time in college. Okay, yeah. He's being very nice about it, etc. But this is what I like. And, and. And I, I. Let me just say, because these people might even be listening. And I'm not trying to mock you. I guess I'm trying to mock you.
Ryan
It's like.
Matt Jones
So the first comment. I'm looking at the comments. Yeah, the first comment, Shannon, is from a guy named Matt Jones.
Shannon
Oh, not you, though.
Matt Jones
Not me. It's called. He has a site. Matt Jones hoops training.
Ryan
There's too many Matt Joneses out there.
Matt Jones
Okay, so you're like, oh, where's Matt Jones hoops training? It's in Lexington, Kentucky.
Drew
No, it's not.
Matt Jones
Did you know there was a Matt Jones that. That trained people about hoops in Lexington? I did not. I had no idea. Here is his comment. This is classic college basketball coach talk. Not willing to develop shooting and rely on recruiting. We'll pay assistants and players millions, but we won't pay for a shooting coach and we won't allot time for shooting development. So very dismissive from Matt Jones hoops training. Yeah. And I'm thinking, wow, Matt Jones hoops training has a lot of positive thoughts about himself. Right? Oh, but he has nothing compared to the next.
Drew
Oh, my.
Matt Jones
The next commenter whose name is something Rambo. I'm not gonna say his first name because I'm not trying to call the guy out, but his last name's Rambo. All right. He might or might not Be an assistant coach at a. Coaching at a school in Kentucky.
Drew
Oh, perhaps.
Matt Jones
Perhaps Rambo. Here's what Rambo says. Now I want you to think, Shannon, this is what I knew you would like.
Shannon
Okay?
Matt Jones
Rambo responds to Matt Jones hoops training saying, you know, Pope's too busy making money than he is to teach people to shoot. Here's what Rambo says. Yep, I volunteered to help Mark Pope with shooting last summer for free. He said he wasn't interested. And they don't mess with shooting instruction. I'm sure you and I could handle that. Give us 20 minutes to evaluate the players and I can change their entire shot.
Shannon
I love the confidence of people.
Matt Jones
Rambo writes this video and says, give me 20 minutes so I need. And Rambo can change their entire shot. Now I don't know why this perturbed me, Shannon. Yeah, but I think it's because Mark Pope, who by all accounts seems to be pretty good at the shooting thing, right?
Drew
And pretty smart at basketball.
Matt Jones
And Matt Jones hoops training and Rambo comment that give them 20 minutes and they'll change everything. So my argument, Shannon, is why don't Matt Jones hoops training in Rambo? Why aren't they the coach of the Thunder?
Shannon
Well, they tried to be, but nobody. They offered their services for free.
Matt Jones
For free.
Shannon
Don't even need a contract.
Matt Jones
So I want you to think about Mark Pope walking down the street, Drew. And Rambo walks up and he goes, 20 minutes. Just give me 20 minutes and I'll have your whole team making all the shots. What would you do?
Ryan
Run. 20 minutes. I'll have Otega away in the first round. I'll fix the 20 minutes. 20 minutes, that's pretty quick. See, like the jump shot whisperer. That's pretty impressive.
Matt Jones
What are you showing?
Shannon
That's the guy. That was my trainer. I found his name.
Matt Jones
That's not Rainbow.
Shannon
No, no, no, no, no. That's. That's Lee. You were asking what's the. He had his little booklet, this pamphlet.
Matt Jones
He had his booklet. Yeah, but remember, Lee's thing was he called in and expected Cal to take up his offer. I just wish I had a lot of people say, oh, Matt's a little arrogant. He's what? I wish I had half the self confidence to think I could walk up to a college coach and say, I can fix all of your shooting problems for 20 minutes. Can you imagine Ryan having that level of self confidence?
Drew
No, because if it was that easy, there'd be Steph Curry's on every team, every girl across the country. It's not that easy.
Matt Jones
And.
Drew
And a guy like Pope that eats, breathes basketball.
Matt Jones
Rambo is an assistant coach for a place in Kentucky. I'm following them this season.
Drew
See how they're shooting presentation and Drew.
Matt Jones
I expect them not to miss one shot. Them to light it up the entire time they've got Rambo. What else do they need?
Ryan
I would actually like to see Pope say, all right, 20 minutes on the clock.
Matt Jones
Here you go. That's a video I would sign up. Goes. Okay, Rambo, let's go. You got 20 minutes.
Ryan
They have a buzzer go off. He has to leave the gym as soon as the buzzer goes off.
Matt Jones
Here's a Mari Williams. You got 20 minutes, Rambo, go.
Shannon
I mean, what are Rambo's like credentials? Like, what has Rambo done?
Matt Jones
He has it on his thing. I don't want to call the guy out cause that because. But he has it on his. He has his credentials and he's. He's coached. He's coached at the high school level. And a little bit of assistant at.
Drew
Matt Jones shooting school is a real.
Matt Jones
Thing Matt Jones hoops training does. Except he's in Lexington, shares. My name is in basketball and I hadn't heard of it.
Shannon
So I. I think we should take Ryan to Matt Jones hoops training and see if Ryan.
Matt Jones
Here's what I want. Rambo, if you could teach anybody. May I introduce you to Billy, our sports? All right. He shoots and his legs spread out and go opposite directions when he shoots. You give it. You got 20 minutes. I expect to see him light it up.
Drew
Light it up.
Matt Jones
Yes. We're going to take a break. 859-280-2287. We're also going to have you call in from one of the five counties if you want to host us. That and some basketball updates. Ksr.

Ryan
But they're gonna dig it up, make it so.
Matt Jones
So it's gonna come.
Ryan
I don't know what I'm talking about. I thought it already existed around rup. We just had to pull back some. Some shrubs.
Drew
Yeah, it's underground.
Matt Jones
How do you first, do you know this?
Drew
Yeah, and it comes out there by Goodfells and it goes down to McConnell's.
Matt Jones
So where. Explain to me in relation to Manchester Music hall, where it is.
Drew
Across the street.
Matt Jones
Okay, so towards rup.
Drew
Well, no, towards Goodfellows, close to the park. But it goes underground and goes to the park.
Matt Jones
Okay, so that didn't.
Ryan
It's underneath you. But have you ever been to Mammoth Cave?
Matt Jones
I have.
Ryan
So it's like that, but smaller.
Matt Jones
So how are people going to walk around the creek if it's unvisible?
Ryan
They're going to make it visible.
Matt Jones
And that's going to happen in the next two months.
Ryan
I have no idea what I'm talking about. I just know that there's a body of water underneath Rupp.
Matt Jones
I'm skeptical. All right, so you looked up Matt Jones hoops training.
Drew
I mean, it's legit. He's got.
Matt Jones
How do you know it's legit?
Drew
Well, he's got a website.
Matt Jones
Well, then it must. Shane must be legit if it has a website. Okay, so it's in Lexington.
Ryan
You were Matt Jones with a website. Just starting once.
Matt Jones
Good point. No one said I'm legit. Yeah, I'm stupid liberal. Nobody. Go ahead.
Drew
He services in Lexington, Louisville and Cincinnati.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Drew
But for 130 you can get a 90 minute Zoom call where he breaks down three games, cuts the films up, gives you some coaching.
Ryan
I can't go to the grocery for $30.
Matt Jones
That's true. That seems relatively cheap for 90 minutes. What. What's his qualifications?
Drew
He was a head coach, it looks like, of a foreign team. Velasnia.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Drew
Head of Valesnia. He's a young guy.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Drew
Worked out with Dexter Dennis, Trey Jameson and Dexter Dennis.
Matt Jones
You said he said that, Shannon, like we would all know.
Drew
Dexter Dennis says he's with the Dallas Mavericks.
Matt Jones
Dexter Dennis. You ever heard of Dexter Dennis, Mario? Haven't heard of Dexter.
Drew
Trey Jameson with the New Orleans Pelicans.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Drew
And Angelo Allegra with the Charlotte Hornets.
Shannon
The best shooters in the game, I would think.
Matt Jones
I'm just saying I looked at text machine. I would think if you taught hoops training in Lexington, I would have seen like someone listening this show. Would have, would, would have, would have known. Now, Rambo, I haven't gotten any comments from anybody knows Rambo either.
Drew
I haven't either.
Matt Jones
So I am, I am, you know, I'm for these guys. I just don't think they should be telling Mark Pope that they can teach shooting better than him. That's what offended me, not having a small business. Not trying to make. But like the idea that you would look at a video of Mark Pope and be like this. What's wrong with coaches and me, Rambo? I know what's right.
Ryan
I've completely flipped. This is Kentucky's team. I think Pope should once a week, a fan. Start with Rambo. Start with Matt Jones, whoever. Someone off the street gets 20 minutes to contribute what they think they can offer to Kentucky basketball.
Matt Jones
All right?
Ryan
It's the State's team.
Matt Jones
Let the state let everybody come in and coach them up. All right, Fair enough. The draft is tomorrow. It's crazy me to think that the NBA draft is tomorrow. Couple interesting things to go on. First of all, Cooper, flag goes number one. Do you think he's going to be a star? Yes, he's going to be a star.
Ryan
He's going to be a star.
Matt Jones
I think he's going to be a star. Does it. You don't. None of you care that he fell down at the end of games? Does any of that matter? You think any of that will matter?
Drew
No. He's still got a skill set that's going to make him a star someday in the NBA.
Matt Jones
Does it seem weird to you that the number two and potentially number three picks are guys who didn't even make the tournament?
Drew
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And they were on the same team. Is that not strange? A little bit. Does that make you at all worried that, like, Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey didn't make the tournament even though they Were on the same.
Ryan
It is bizarre. They had a really bad loss early in the year, too. I can't think of the team. Harper looks more of a sure thing than Bailey. In my little bit of expertise. If there's any expertise at all.
Matt Jones
So let's talk about Ace Bailey for. Bailey refuses to work out for any team.
Drew
Yep.
Matt Jones
Has done no interviews.
Ryan
He wants money to do interviews.
Matt Jones
He says in order to interview with the team, Shannon, he requires you to pay the money.
Shannon
Should call up Rambo and.
Matt Jones
And he is like management team or just people who've never done this before. So he's got like Mario as his manager. Red flag.
Ryan
Another player's dad is his manager.
Matt Jones
Red flag.
Drew
If I'm an NBA general manager, I am staying far away from a guy like that.
Matt Jones
I mean, that has all the red flags.
Drew
Absolutely.
Matt Jones
It does, right? I mean, this is definitely like. I mean, I am shocked this dude could go in the top five. First of all, how good can he be? They didn't make the tournament. And secondly, you won't even interview with the team.
Drew
That's a weird little strange in this day and age.
Matt Jones
I think it's. I would be very hesitant to pick.
Ryan
If you can't be slipping in the mock drafts.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Which.
Shannon
Yeah. If you can't be bothered to interview with me, then why would I have any interest in you as a player?
Matt Jones
All right. Con Canipple, the other little white guy on Duke. You like him?
Ryan
I can't believe he's projected where he is now.
Matt Jones
Some people say go number four.
Ryan
Yeah. Bailey has fallen and Knipple has climbed up to probably top.
Matt Jones
He's being projected number three.
Ryan
Another guy that missed the tournament.
Matt Jones
Yeah. But I can see why people. I mean, he's that athletic.
Ryan
Oh, no. He looks great. But with Knipple, I mean, he was very good at Duke. It'll probably work out. But to be projected where he's projected is pretty wild to me.
Matt Jones
It's pretty high for Con Knipple.
Ryan
Also. Reed shepherd went third last year.
Matt Jones
That's true. And I never thought that would happen either. Some guys that are on our radar from things. You think Walter Clayton Jr. They projected him like 25th to 30th. He's going to be good, isn't he?
Drew
He's just. He's got the skill set that succeeds in the NBA.
Matt Jones
I just can't see him failing. Shannon. He's too. He's too good. Like, I understand may he's little and maybe he won't be, but he's not going to that Kid is he.
Shannon
He feels like a guy that's perfect for the NBA and you know there's a team that could use him and pick him up. So I, I don't see him going that far down in the first.
Matt Jones
All right. What about the guy for Auburn that can't jump? He would. Johnny Bruno.
Ryan
That video destroyed him.
Matt Jones
It's got him going in the second round. He's another one though. Do you think he can play in the league?
Ryan
I honestly would have thought till that video. Normally the combine stuff, it's all an overreaction. That one video where he barely can jump over a piece of paper I think will cost him a job.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it is.
Drew
Back in the 80s, he'd been a first round lottery pick. Probably his game, the way he plays, but not anymore.
Matt Jones
Like though there's got to be something he could do.
Ryan
Well, he watch here Amari with the Knicks. The Knicks are kind of looking for that type of player and that could be. Amari could steal his spot if he's still on the board.
Matt Jones
Well, I'm excited for the draft. It goes. I think there's a lot of guys that are interesting. There's a lot of dudes kind of in the middle that could end up being really good. Any chance Kobe Braya sneaks in the end of the first round?
Ryan
I'll be rooting for it. I'll watch every minute of the draft. I just love the draft and all the nonsense that comes with it, but I don't think he will.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I don't think he will either. He could go early in the second round. Yes, but I don't think he's going to go in the first round. We'll see. I still would if I had to pick at the end of the first round. I'm picking Walter Clayton Jr. Yeah. There's just no way he's going to fail. We'll take a break. Be right back. Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome back to Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. All right, seems like people are showing me where it is. I don't know if I buy it, but apparently it's.
Drew
It's there now. Maybe you just can't see it from your house.
Matt Jones
So one person writes, matt, in the old days when you would park at Rupp's garage, there was a place you could go up next to and you could hear the by. It had a Sign.
Drew
Really?
Matt Jones
Did you know that? No, I had no idea about that. See, we're learning about history today. All right, so Thursday we do the show on the road. KSR comes to you. We are. It has to be one of these five counties. Spencer, Shelby, Wayne, Hancock, Rowan.
Drew
Yep.
Matt Jones
Has to be one of those five. Again, the rules are you can. You could say your house, you could say a place of business, although you can't invite a crap. Like we would just have to sit there.
Drew
Yes.
Matt Jones
It can be like a community center. It can be anything in these five counties. You just can't like invite. If you have a business, you can't like advertise it for your business. Right, okay. But it has to be one of these five counties.
Drew
First two we've done have been great success.
Matt Jones
They have. These have been. They've been awesome so far. And we've gotten to see the state. Mario comes to your house. It's very exciting. We play bad girls pinball, but you have to make the bad girls pinball. You have to make the case for why we should come to your house. Okay, Shannon, go ahead and open it up. 859-280-2287. He'll take your calls, get everybody on. But if you are in Spencer, Shelby, Wayne, Hancock and Ryland county, the phone is now open for you to call and make your case. And the first six people that get it get through. Assuming we have six in those counties. We will do.
Drew
And I think we've never been to Hancock or Spencer, so a couple newbies in there.
Matt Jones
All right, so somebody wrote me drew and asked for an update because we have like this big time UK basketball recruit on campus right now. They kind of asked for like an update on where we are in basketball recruiting for next year. I kind of rely on you for this a little bit. I know you've been on vacation, but can you give people an update? Are we like going for the top 10 guys and if so, where? Where is it?
Ryan
Pope just had a good advant being out in Colorado with Team usa. I think there was like nine people Kentucky's offered that were out there with Marino and Johnson. So Pope got a head start there. But the guy on campus is Kenny from Newport, Kentucky. Take any landed last night. He's here through Wednesday. I think he's the third ranked point guard in the class. Top 20 player, 15ish. Pretty much. It seems like he's down to Kentucky and Louisville might give Louisville a slight edge today. This is just kind of so you.
Matt Jones
So Louisville has the slide a lot.
Ryan
Of guessing right now with. It seems those two are by far the ones he's considering the most. Maybe a little bit of a Louisville lean because it just. He's already visited there. But he just started his Kentucky visit last night.
Matt Jones
His name is Tay Kenny.
Ryan
Yes, he plays for overtime.
Matt Jones
You've been talking about this kid for a long time. So tell people what he like. You've been talking about him for a long, long time.
Drew
I've watched him since he was in middle school and we should like him because he's been to KS Bar and Grill. When he played for Newport, they played in the sweet 16 and the whole team came and had a pregame meal or maybe the post game meal at KS Bar & Grill left Newport to go play, like Drew said, overtime elite. And I think he's going to play with somebody else, maybe different even this year.
Matt Jones
How good are we talking? Like if we're ranking sort of Kentucky. Kentucky high school kids of recent years, how good are we talking?
Drew
I'd say he's pretty comparable to Jasper Johnson. Jasper is probably a better shooter, but they both kind of play that same off guard, point guard position. So that's kind of a good comparison.
Ryan
They're ranked about the same too, in their classes.
Matt Jones
All right, what about him? What besides him, what are we looking at?
Ryan
We have the other player out of Kentucky, Stokes, who's like number one, everything next year, probably another more of a long shot. He's got offers from everywhere on the planet. He's originally from Louisville. He's another one that's gone off and played.
Matt Jones
Why wouldn't he. Why wouldn't he play here?
Ryan
Not saying he wouldn't. I mean, Kentucky's in the mix recruiting him hard, but he's as good as Kenny is. We want him. Stokes is maybe one of those generational guys.
Matt Jones
Ty Stokes?
Drew
Yeah, Tyron, Tylan, Kenny and Tyron Stokes.
Matt Jones
And where does Tyron Stokes play?
Drew
Oh, what is he, California?
Ryan
Yeah, he's one of the.
Drew
But he's like Drew says, it's a long shot.
Matt Jones
I mean, we're not extremely long shot.
Ryan
But I mean, it's just because he left the state right away. I mean, they're in with him, but he's. It's early, his recruitment. He's got everybody wanting him. He's one of those. The. The guy guys. He's number one in the class.
Drew
Number one.
Matt Jones
What about the rest of the time? Like, is it clear he's. Pope is going after these.
Ryan
Oh, absolutely. All over him with Kenny and some of the other point guards. They're looking at. You run into a little bit of an issue that if Jalen Lowe is a student, he's probably not leaving. I mean, he has two years left. So you want to recruit point guards, but the plan originally was have a senior this year, and that all completely changed. It's why Lewis left. So you're having to recruit these point guards, including Kenny. But also there's like, well, how good is Jalen Lowe going to be?
Matt Jones
I would love to have Jalen Lowe as a two year. But I did like the video UK did where guys came into practice and they showed what time they came in. J Low was the first one.
Drew
First one.
Matt Jones
I like your point guard being the first one. Came in 50 minutes before practice. I like when the point guard's the first one to come in and they.
Drew
Come in, they would clap. And what were they saying? Like two weeks to the second week. Two weeks. Everybody is that kind of thing they got to do when they come into the gym. They got to clap and do their little thing.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So I think that's good. I'm excited.
Ryan
It's so obvious. Pope's messaging is out there with them, though. I mean, everything is number nine. Number nine. Understand the assignment. Understand the assignment. We're starting to get interviews. Aberdeen and Dubate yesterday. It's the Pope. He is working that into their brains, if they didn't already bring it.
Matt Jones
All right, we got six people on the line. We did not get a call from Round county or Wayne County.
Drew
Wow.
Matt Jones
So Monticello and Morehead, you know, little disappointed. I was. I thought Morehead would be a good contender.
Drew
Yes.
Matt Jones
But that's okay. We've got one from all the others. So let's go through here. Steve, make your case in Hancock County.
E
Hello, Matt, what's up? We have. We have Nathan Nelson from Hancock County. We have Tyler Kratzer from Hancock County. I think you both. You all know those two guys well. And we need prayers for Tyler Kratzer's family, if you don't mind.
Matt Jones
Yes.
E
06D, one of the newest bands. When the hottest band.
Matt Jones
Okay, I got all that. Where do you want us to do the show? I don't need the. We got to know where you want the show to be.
E
We have. We have the beach house secured at Basswood park, and our judge is all about it, and he's ready for y' all to come and. And have your show. And people.
Matt Jones
I don't know what that is, though. I don't know what that is. The beach house.
E
It's Our county park and we have a big lake and the beach house is.
Matt Jones
It's a.
E
It has Internet and everything. And it would be a great place for you to have your show. It's a beautiful area.
Matt Jones
The beach at a park in Hancock county sounds good. Run by a Louisville fan. That's tougher, but. All right.
E
The judge. The judge is the Louisville fan.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but just. That's a lot of poison injected into the bloodstream. But I still. Hang on. We'll see. That could still win. I. Hang on. McKenzie is in Shelby County. Go ahead, McKenzie.
E
Hey, Matt, this is McKenzie. I'm actually in Lawrenceburg, but I'm calling for my father in law who is in Shelby County. He's got a 35 acre farm. For the past like 15 plus years, he's raised and hand fed and done exotic animals. He's got everything from camels to kangaroos, the cabbie bears to a sloth, anteater, foxes, African deer. He's got everything. And recently, within the past year, he's opened it to the public on the weekends. It's like the only thing in this area where you can walk up to these animals and like hand feed them that are like supposed to be in the wild. It's. It's really cool.
Matt Jones
Is it. Let me ask you a question. Is this legal?
E
Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. He's got insurance.
Matt Jones
Okay. Does he know we would. Does he know we would be coming?
E
Yeah, yeah, I cleared it with him last night. He's super excited. He's a. He's also. And he's an auctioneer in Shelbyville.
Shannon
I do.
E
He does.
Matt Jones
Okay, Mackenzie, that's. Hang on. I'm. Put you on hold right there. That's how this is.
Shannon
People like that.
Matt Jones
All right. 35 acre farm with exotic animals. Micah is in Shelby County. Go ahead, Micah.
E
Hey, guys, this is Micah. I'm just inviting you to our house in Persimmon Ridge. Subdivision on the golf course. And nothing super fancy, but we'd love to have you and fix lunch for you afterwards. I got a smoker with pulled pork and all the fixings that you would want. And we also have a side business that we do at farmers markets and other craft fairs. It's a dessert sweet layers bakery. And it would not be like we wouldn't be advertising it, but we would have some cakes for your red velvet Italian cream.
Matt Jones
Pretty good.
E
Or carrot cake or whatever.
Matt Jones
All right, Micah. I like that. Persimmon Ridge and lots of food and cake. Hang on, Micah. Right there. So that's a nice golf course, cake, food, and etc. Let's go to Peggy in Shelby County. Peggy, what do you got? Good morning, guys. I have the. A conference room at the. The civic center here in Shelbyville. All right. We would be. We would feed you a light breakfast and whatever kind of drinks you want. Yeah, and I always wanted to get you guys to Shelbyville. And I'm a lifetime UK fan and I've been. Listen. I listen to you guys every day. All right, Peggy, I appreciate it. I'm gonna put you on hold. Light, I like. She says light breakfast. Don't be expected. Some kind of big breakfast, Drew. Light breakfast.
Ryan
Yeah. Still plan on having lunch.
Matt Jones
This is gonna be. This is a continental business. We're not getting your omelettes.
Ryan
I'm thinking like, pastries, some coffee.
Shannon
Get a Pop Tart and a muffin.
Matt Jones
That's right. Cole is in Spencer County. Cole. Go ahead, Cole.
E
All right. I sold my house and had to move back to my mom's. It's a cool little spot. Overlooks the Youth Stallions football field. If you want to come, come. If you don't, don't. I'll buy you some Dairy Queen.
Drew
Wow. That's a heck of a sales piece.
Matt Jones
Hang on. Go. I like it.
Shannon
Take it or leave it. He doesn't.
Matt Jones
If you want to.
Drew
If you don't, I'll buy you breakfast.
Matt Jones
Wow.
Shannon
His day is going to go on regardless if we show up.
Matt Jones
Let me tell you something. Spencer county needs to use that as their tourism slogan. You know what? If you want to come, fine.
Shannon
It's kind of how I feel about Spencer county being a neighboring county of mine, you know?
Matt Jones
You don't want to come? No. No. Scott want to come. Don't. And there's a Dairy Queen.
Ryan
More Dairy Queen for me if you don't.
Drew
I want to go watch youth football and eat my Dairy Queen.
Shannon
Who cares? Not impressed at all.
Matt Jones
All right. Danny.
E
Hey. I don't know. I don't know how. I don't know how I'm going to follow that, Matt. But I'm talking to my brother who often calls us. He often calls it Sully from Shelby County. He's actually.
Matt Jones
Okay.
E
He's a lawyer. He's stuck in. He's stuck in Newcastle Family Court right now. But I'm currently texting with him, so all the approval has been done.
Matt Jones
Okay. What is it?
E
Me. He. He sent me his pitch. And lawyers like to use a lot of words. I'll get through it as fast as I can. But UK grad. He went to UK law school everyday listener since 2012. He's been to a few remotes and scrambles. Took too many free gummies at the Lexington scramble last year.
Matt Jones
Okay, yes. He's got.
E
He's been in the same house in Shelbyville for 20 years. He's got four kids. Two are at the University of Kentucky. He's got two at home. He has a dog named RUP who he will keep completely away from you. So you don't have to touch him and you won't touch you. He said, I'm not sure what a mommy squammy is, but I think my wife of 26 years is one. I don't know.
Matt Jones
He's got a little pool.
E
He's got a pool behind us. He's got a little pool behind his house where he can set up. And he's promising whatever is on top of.
Matt Jones
Because the things going on. So hang on right there. All right, so you've got the house with the pool. They'll put the kids and the dog up. They've got the mom's house. Take it or leave it. You got the beach house in Hancock county. You got a 35 acre farm with animals. You got Persimmon Ridge with food and the smoker. And you got Peggy in her conference room and her light breakfast. Everyone gets to eliminate one. I'll start with you, Ryan. Which one are you eliminating?
Drew
I guess I'll eliminate the guys. Like come if you don't care if you come. I don't care if you don't.
Matt Jones
Oh, wow. I think he would have survived, Shannon. I think probably like that. Sorry, Cole. Ron says he doesn't like your attitude. I actually thought that was a funny call. Cold, already hung up. I think he knew that things weren't going to go.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Okay. All right, Mario, I'll let you eliminate one. Which one? Hancock County. Hancock County. You don't want the beach house? I don't know too much.
Ryan
I don't know too much about it.
Matt Jones
Okay, well, that would be a reason to go, but. Okay. All right. Hancock County. Go. I'll go next. I'm going to. I've been to Persimmon Ridge a number of times, so. I appreciate the offer, Micah, but I'm going to say no. I'm Persimmon Ridge. So, Drew, you get to eliminate either the 35 acre farm with all the crazy stuff, Peggy and her conference room and light breakfast, or Danny, his uk, law, kids, dog, house, pool.
Ryan
I love Peggy, but the conference room, it'll just feel like any other show we've done at a. At A nice established business. I want to see someone's home. I want to get a little bit weird. So I'm going to eliminate the comfort of the conference room and Peggy.
Matt Jones
All right, Shannon. All comes down to you. They got a 35 acre farm with all kinds of crazy animals that you could. That we could visit or you could visit. This guy with his. He's got. His buddy is. Is. Is in law school or is practicing law right now. Got a house in a pool. Kind of a more normal setup. Which one's it going to be?
Shannon
Out of all six callers, there's one that immediately stood out, and it's the guy that has all the farm animals. So process of elimination. You get to go hang out with llamas and zebras and camels.
Matt Jones
Get McKinney's contact information. Tell him Ryan will be in contact. And we're going to go see crazy animals in Shelby Cat.
Drew
I was so secretly hoping that would be it because just the fact of animals and you had a show. I think it's going to just.
Matt Jones
I'm going to tell you this. McKinney Men's Kinsey. Keep those things away from every single one of them.
Ryan
There's only one winner here.
Matt Jones
We'll be right back.

I think you have to be a character to do that.
Ryan
Yeah. I'm hoping we walk in, there's someone with one arm. I hope he's screaming about Carol Baskins. I want the whole. I want the whole experience.
Matt Jones
Yeah. One one person writes Matt, I think these, these calls are very indicative of the counties themselves. Shelby county has more people, various options. Spencer county doesn't care whether you come or not. And Hancock county didn't have its plan totally together, but seems nice.
Drew
I was secretly kind of hoping for Spencer county or Hancock county because we've never been. But there was just one winner in those calls.
Matt Jones
It was a little disappointed, I'm going to say, in Round and Wayne county, those are two of the places we've done a lot of shows, a lot of people. I'm just disappointed we didn't get one of the six calls from one of those places to at least give us an option. Because I was sitting there thinking, you know, it would have been a haul to go to Wayne county, but I'd have done it for the right place. But Brown's not that far.
Drew
No, Wayne County, I guess includes Conley. Bottom We've done a lot of shows in Monticello and Conley bottom down there.
Matt Jones
So, you know, I'll just be sad about Rowan county and in Wayne County. But what I'm not sad about, Shannon, are your Cincinnati Reds.
Shannon
No, your Cincinnati Reds, not mine.
Matt Jones
Ellie what a game last night. Homer. Triple single. Aaron Judge hit a home run.
Drew
First inning.
Matt Jones
First inning. Like hit it to the moon. But the Reds get the win. We have a guy, a pitcher who's got really long hair.
Drew
Yeah.
Matt Jones
His name is Barlow.
Drew
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Have you seen that guy pitch against.
Drew
Cardinals on Saturday and got him out of a tough jam?
Matt Jones
My friend says he looks like a singer in like a dirty 80s band. He calls him. I don't know. Am I allowed to say that word? He calls him on the radio.
Drew
I think you can say that word.
Matt Jones
He calls him Scuzz Bucket. Yeah.
Ryan
I don't think that's one of the seven words.
Matt Jones
Is that a word you could say?
Shannon
Yeah. I think you're good.
Matt Jones
He calls him Scuzz Bucket.
Drew
Why?
Matt Jones
I don't know. But he. He. He struck out Judge Stanton, Chisholm and Volpe, back to. Back to Back to back. It. When the. When there were. There was difficult situation. So it was exciting.
Ryan
Do you. Do you have any regret about giving up those tickets?
Matt Jones
No. I got a lot of money. I'm going tonight. Going to watch the Chase Burns guy in his first. The rookie guy leave, like, halfway through. Because I got to drive all the way back to Louisville tonight. But I'll go. I want to be there to watch the guy kind of throw his first innings.
Drew
Well, the Dolo threw a good game last night. Gave up that home run to Judge and then did pretty well after that, didn't he?
Matt Jones
So it is kind of, you know. Are you feeling it, Summer Valley?
Ryan
No, it's back on.
Drew
Well, giving it one more week. And you'll be back off.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I mean, there were a lot of people there, though.
Drew
Oh, I bet.
Matt Jones
Did you. I mean, Yankee fans, when Judge hit the home run, it was loud.
Drew
Was it?
Matt Jones
Yeah, you could. But I mean, he's also kind of larger than life. It also occurred to me last night how the Yankees uniforms, the road ones, are kind of gross. They get gray and sweaty and dumpy. Like, have you ever looked at, like.
Ryan
It looks like a thick material?
Matt Jones
Yeah. And you can see their sweat stains through, like, their home uniforms. The pinstripes are unbelievable. But those road uniforms, it looks like they've been working on the side of the road and then just decided to go. And they're kind of disgusting. Like, you don't want to wear a uniform that shows your pit stains.
Ryan
Who's just wearing gray anyway? All the options. You're just going full gray.
Matt Jones
You're the Yankees. Why do you have to wear, like. You can see, like, they all have sweats. That gray is not a good look.
Drew
It was hot as snot last night. I understand.
Matt Jones
So do something. Can you get some material that's not. It looks gross. We'll take a break. Be right back. KSR.
Podcast Title: KSR
Host/Authors: iHeartPodcasts and Sports Talk 790 (WKRD-AM)
Episode: 2025-06-24 - KSR - Hour 1
Release Date: June 24, 2025
The episode kicks off with Matt Jones greeting listeners on a notably hot Tuesday, June 24th. He humorously compares standing outside to walking into an oven, highlighting the extreme heat anticipated throughout the week.
Matt Jones [00:36]: "Another sunny, hot day. When I walked outside of my house, it's like walking into an oven."
His co-host, Shannon, confirms the high temperatures expected.
Shannon [00:53]: "Like all this week is supposed to be 96 degrees every day."
A significant portion of the discussion revolves around the new amphitheater in Lexington. Matt expresses excitement and skepticism about its upcoming features, particularly the integration of McConnells Creek.
Matt Jones [02:28]: "I just feel like I just mourned that guy."
The hosts delve into the history and current status of the venue, discussing the first scheduled concert featuring the Beach Boys. They touch upon the band's current lineup, noting that Mike Love remains as the sole original member.
Shannon [01:49]: "Mike Love, I think is the guy that's left."
Matt raises concerns about the authenticity of tribute bands versus original performances but acknowledges the potential entertainment value.
Shannon [04:17]: "They played at Bourbon and Beyond last year, and I didn't care that it wasn't any original guys. They sounded great."
The conversation transitions to the features of the park surrounding the amphitheater, critiquing the emphasis on playground space over natural elements like the creek.
Matt Jones [05:03]: "It feels like the playground is as big as the amphitheater."
Drew introduces the concept of McConnells Creek resurfacing, which Matt remains skeptical about due to construction timelines.
Matt Jones [07:26]: "Unless you can uncover a creek, Drew, in two months, I'm going to be skeptical that on opening that creek is going to be there."
The hosts shift focus to basketball, referencing a video featuring Mark Pope discussing the importance of shooting mechanics in recruiting players. Matt uses this as a springboard to critique individuals like "Matt Jones Hoops Training" and "Rambo," who claim they can significantly improve shooting mechanics in a short time.
Mark Pope [09:09]: "If you don't have good shooting mechanics, I can't have you because I can't teach you shooting mechanics because you've probably already shot so much."
Shannon and Drew engage in a playful banter about the credibility and confidence of these coaches, ultimately questioning why such individuals haven't been adopted by major teams like the Kentucky Thunder.
Matt Jones [18:14]: "He was a head coach, it looks like, of a foreign team. Velasnia."
Transitioning to the NBA draft, Matt and co-hosts discuss the prospects, expressing strong confidence in Cooper Flag as the number one pick.
Matt Jones [19:52]: "Do you think he's going to be a star? Yes, he's going to be a star."
They critique the selection of players like Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey, pointing out inconsistencies in their performance and draft projections. The conversation highlights concerns about Bailey's refusal to engage in workouts and interviews, deeming it a significant red flag.
Matt Jones [20:35]: "He says in order to interview with the team, Shannon, he requires you to pay the money."
Further discussion includes Con Canipple from Duke, with Matt expressing surprise at his high projection despite missing the tournament.
Matt Jones [21:02]: "That has all the red flags."
The segment transitions to interactive listener calls from five counties: Spencer, Shelby, Wayne, Hancock, and Rowan. Matt invites listeners from these areas to host the show, emphasizing community engagement.
Multiple listeners pitch their hosting venues:
Hancock County:
Shelby County:
McKenzie [31:17]: Offers a 35-acre farm featuring exotic animals like camels, kangaroos, and sloths, emphasizing a unique hosting environment.
Micah [32:37]: Invites the crew to his home in Persimmon Ridge, offering a pool and homemade pulled pork, along with a side business selling desserts.
Peggy [32:57]: Suggests her conference room at the Shelbyville Civic Center with a light breakfast and beverages.
Spencer County:
Rowan and Wayne Counties:
After deliberation, Shannon selects Shelby County's offer, intrigued by the prospect of interacting with exotic animals.
Shannon [38:15]: "Out of all six callers, there's one that immediately stood out, and it's the guy that has all the farm animals."
The discussion shifts to a recent Cincinnati Reds game where Aaron Judge hit a home run in the first inning, but the Reds still secured a win. Matt highlights the performance of pitcher Barlow, nicknamed "Scuzz Bucket," who struck out multiple players despite struggling early on.
Matt Jones [42:06]: "He calls him Scuzz Bucket."
The hosts commend Barlow's ability to recover and perform under pressure, adding lighthearted commentary about the Yankees' road uniforms and their appearance during the hot game.
Matt Jones [43:17]: "The Yankees' road uniforms look gross. You don't want to wear a uniform that shows your pit stains."
As the episode wraps up, Matt reflects on the day's discussions, expressing anticipation for future shows and interactions with listeners. The blend of sports commentary, community engagement, and light-hearted banter provides a comprehensive and entertaining listening experience.
