This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome everyone. It is Kentucky sports radio. Wednesday, June 25, one of my usually favorite shows of the year. It is Unpopular Opinion Day. We haven't done this in like two years because we didn't get to do it last summer because I was gone. So there should be a lot of unpopular opinions out there. 859-280-2287. On the Clark's Puppet Shop phone line, a Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254. In this session, sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office, you call TJ. He'll make them pay. Here is a reminder of how this works. Two things. Number one, you pick an opinion. It can be about UK sports or the state of Kentucky. That's what we would prefer. But if you have another one, that's okay. But I prefer UK Sports University or the state of Kentucky. It has to be unpopular. You are in the minority in this position, okay? And it is no politics. And also you, you can say it and we will give no judgment. And by the no judgment, I mean like I'm not going to tell you, I won't disagree with you or say it's a bad opinion. But like we're not going to look down on you as a person for coming up with that opinion. You get to just say it. And we will, we will digest it. So. 859-280-2287. Ryan I always enjoy this because we get and sometimes I think people look at things a Different way if people make a good case.
Ryan Lemon
See, I'm already a little anxious because the couple I've had in years past have really gotten me in a lot of trouble.
Matt Jones
Well, because you have said you didn't like Keeneland. You didn't like AL8. Yeah, those are two big things for the state. You have said that over the years and didn't like.
Ryan Lemon
And I think Taylor Swift's overrated. That's the one that really, I think got me going.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but that was. That. That was. Yeah, that was dumb. But. But you. You've done all.
Ryan Lemon
No judgment. No judgment.
Matt Jones
Well, no, no. Yeah. I mean, I know it's not that we can't say they're wrong. I just can't say you're a bad person for it. There's a. There's a difference. Drew, do you enjoy Unpopular Opinion Day?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I worked hard on my homework assignment. Kept me up pretty late last night. But it's not about my. My own opinions. I like hearing the crazy stuff that the callers bring in. I feel like I have a pretty good feel for all you guys, but the callers usually come in with some outrageous things.
Matt Jones
They do, and I'm looking forward to it. And you can also send them on the text machine. 772-7745254. So we're going to get started. We all were assigned to give one. But before I do that, Ryan, that was the best Reds game in two years last night.
Ryan Lemon
You had to be excited about what you saw last night.
Matt Jones
So if. If you didn't watch it, first of all, you should have. Chase Burns comes out, strikes out the first five batters. Ryan, first batters or first pitcher since 1960 to strike out the first five batters of his. Of his major league career. How cool was that?
Ryan Lemon
And I wanted to hear what, you know, like, the crowd's excited. He's debut. He gets the first strikeout, but then he gets the second one. And then he gets the third one. I mean, the crowd had.
Matt Jones
And the third one was Aaron Judge.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, right.
Matt Jones
The third one was Aaron Judge. I think that's key to get Aaron Judge on the third one. It's wild. And then you have the game, then the fourth inning, you know, he gets roughed up a little bit. They. They score three runs. You think, well, this was a great story. But. But whatever. Then we come back in the seventh, Christian in Carcy Own Strand, who's basically been Christian and Carcin Strand, runners on base. Instead, he gets a triple on it with the bases loaded, ties the game, you go to extra innings, Reds fall behind. Then they come back, Ellie thinks the game's over. Like A John Wall, Mississippi State, DeMarcus Cousins thing. And then they still end up winning. And it was on a. It was, it was awesome. Like it was awesome. That's the best game two year, I think. Shannon, you saw the best game. What was it last year? Two years ago when they got the cycle.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
You were at that one.
Shannon The Dude
Ellie hit for the cycle. That's right.
Matt Jones
Was that two years ago or last year?
Shannon The Dude
I think that was two years ago.
Matt Jones
Two years ago. Probably the best game since that. Probably two years. The bid, the best game since that. And Ryan, it was, it was, it was just awesome. Summer of Ellie now is also the summer of Burns. It's great.
Ryan Lemon
Well, you know, the highly touted, you know, their top draft pick making his debut against the Yankees at home. And to start the way he did, man, I mean the, the, the. You can't be helped be excited about the guy if you're a Reds fan.
Matt Jones
Drew five strikeouts in a row. I mean, I thought he was going to strike. I thought he was going to get 27. I had it on DraftKings. Didn't quite happen.
Drew Franklin
I wasn't watching live, but I did pull it up. I was on the ESPN app and I just pulled up the box score through two innings and I saw he had six strikeouts and two innings. I didn't realize somebody got hit on him, but I just had a visual of him just striking out everyone on the Yankees for the whole game because at that point it seemed like he was on pace to do that.
Ryan Lemon
Well, is a Tennessee Volunteer does that?
Matt Jones
No, no, no, no, no. Transferred away Forest. Yeah, they benched him. This is how stupid the Tennessee Vols are. They benched him and he transferred to Wake Forest. So no, that he is not a Tennessee Vol. He is a Wake Forest Demon Deacon. So, so I'm excited, you know, probably 80%. Yeah, it was, it was for a Tuesday night. It was very. Because you know that that place holds 42,000 people. So awesome stuff. I, I'm in at least until the end of the weekend. And the Reds are back. Summer of Ellie. And it was exciting. It was also exciting. A lot of you are now texting in and like on the. On tweeting me like you. Everybody's getting into this. Shannon, are you feeling the excitement?
Shannon The Dude
No, not for your Reds at all. I am feeling excited about the Braves because they keep beating the one cares five straight over the Met. Nobody cares about the Reds. What are you talking about?
Matt Jones
Oh, Summer belly Chase burns. Summer burns. It's. It's. All right. So now unpopular opinion day for the rest of the day. I just had to get that out of my system. Drew, I'll let you go first. What is your unpopular opinion?
Drew Franklin
My minor. More life. Things are not Kentucky specific. I can only tell you all so many times that I think Rupp arena ice cream is overrated. You know, the usual hits. So I brought three. I'll just use one. But it's more of a broad, everyday thing.
Matt Jones
Okay, go for it.
Drew Franklin
I do not think that you should be able to use ketchup over the age of 12 if you ask for ketchup. If you ask for ketchup in a restaurant, I think they should also bring you a coloring book and crayons, and you have to sit there like a child and put ketchup on your.
Matt Jones
Not. Not even on French fries.
Drew Franklin
I give a little bit of. All right. Those two things are kind of go together. Or if you order, like if I go to McDonald's and get a double cheeseburger. I'm not customizing my order. It's McDonald's. They put ketchup on it. I'll eat it. But if you are in a restaurant and you reach for the ketchup bottle, I will maybe give you French fries, but anything else.
Matt Jones
So you can't put it on a hamburger if it came out. No, no. You're gonna do all this. Ifs. Then you don't really believe.
Drew Franklin
Physically cannot use. You cannot actively put the ketchup on anything if it is served with it on there.
Matt Jones
Not a hot dog.
Drew Franklin
Nope.
Matt Jones
Not a burger?
Drew Franklin
Nope.
Matt Jones
You will let them do French fries?
Drew Franklin
Potentially. I might meet you there. But that's the only exception. Ketchup is for children. Grow up and eat a real condiment with flavor that is not just fake tomato, processed sugar. Grow up and get an aioli. Get a nice mustard and an aioli. Yeah, Use. Use some real condiments. Once you graduate fourth grade, we're gonna.
Matt Jones
Have to ask the Che there in Shelbyville to add some aioli to the. To the. To the table menu. So there you go. Okay. All right.
Drew Franklin
I feel like I was speaking directly to Ryan Lemon as he looked at me embarrassed.
Ryan Lemon
I had ketchup on my hash browns at Waffle House last night.
Matt Jones
What percentage of food, Ryan, do you think you eat that either has ketchup.
Ryan Lemon
Or ranch 80% or honey mustard or chick fil a sauce?
Matt Jones
Pretty much any. Any sauce?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, any sauce. All right, that one hurt me. Drew, that one really hurt me.
Matt Jones
All right, Shannon.
Drew Franklin
Sorry.
Shannon The Dude
All right, so mine is Kentucky related. It's Kentucky football. As much as we've talked about how terrible we think that the season's going to be, I'm going to go on record right now and say that I believe this team will get to six wins.
Matt Jones
Oh, wow.
Shannon The Dude
This year. I think it will happen. I think, you know, if you look at Mark Stoops and how he's performed when his back is against the wall, I think he's done as good as any coach that we've had in a long, long time.
Matt Jones
So you are, you are six win Shannon.
Shannon The Dude
I am six win Shannon.
Matt Jones
For this six win Shannon. Okay, that's going to be your name for the year. Who, what are the six?
Shannon The Dude
Well, let me pull up the sketch.
Matt Jones
No, no. Well, let me just read through. I'll go through them in my head. Okay, so you soon we win the three stinky games. Are you putting a win over Mandy?
Shannon The Dude
Yes.
Matt Jones
That's four. Okay, then the road games. Do you have any of these? We go to Georgia. We win in that one. No, we go to South Carolina.
Shannon The Dude
Yes.
Matt Jones
Going to win at South Carolina.
Shannon The Dude
That gets me to five.
Matt Jones
Okay. Are we going. We go. Go to Auburn.
Shannon The Dude
No.
Matt Jones
No. All right, then we play at home. Florida.
Shannon The Dude
I could be talked into that one. It's either that one or a Louisville. One of those two.
Matt Jones
Florida or Louisville?
Shannon The Dude
One of those two. They will win and they'll get to six that way.
Matt Jones
So South Carolina and Vandy and either Florida or Louisville.
Shannon The Dude
Yep.
Matt Jones
All right, here we go. That's unpopular. No, it's not. You know, it's, it's, it is doable. Yeah, I think the at South Carolina one is. The. Is the really hard one. What's the other road game I'm forgetting? South Carolina, Auburn. Oh, Vandy. Vandy and Georgia. Okay, so you, you've got us winning two road games and then either Florida or Louisville. All right, so now that's yours. Ryan, what is your unpopular opinion buying?
Ryan Lemon
First one I'm gonna go with is that I think TikTok is trash. I tried to get on it and everybody's. It's all geared to under 21, 25 year old people and other people just giving me their political opinions.
Matt Jones
But you know, it doesn't have to be like that. Like there are, there are old. There's old people. TikTok. You just have to get the algorithm and like the stuff that's aimed at your age.
Ryan Lemon
Trash. TikTok.
Matt Jones
How long did you spend on it?
Ryan Lemon
A Week. Okay, maybe.
Matt Jones
So is it plausible that the reason you were seeing things geared at 21 year olds is because you were watching the videos? Or maybe in other scenarios, you're watching things that normally 21 year olds watch?
Ryan Lemon
I don't know how. I didn't even favorite anything. I just. Everything. Hang on. There was somebody's opinion about some political thing or. 21 years old doing some stupid dance. I'm like, nope, I'm out. Trash.
Shannon The Dude
But you've got those stupid dances before, though.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I mean, you do those dances with Mari.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, but I don't. I don't watch them on Tick Tock.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Okay. This reminds me of Shannon, of when people used to write me on the old KSR website and say, why are the ads on your site all porn? And I'd go, those are Google Ads. That says more about you than it does.
Shannon The Dude
You say to them, why are you watching porn?
Matt Jones
Yeah, because, I mean, the Google Ads, we don't pick what comes on there. It's just like what they got from your computer.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I wonder if he. Why he's getting political opinions and dance is because that's what he looks up on his computer.
Shannon The Dude
Taylor made ads for you?
Matt Jones
Maybe so. All right, so mine is unpopular. Maybe not to the fan base as a whole, but Drew, maybe to my bosses and to people that we, you know, we work with. Okay.
Shannon The Dude
Sure you want to do this?
Drew Franklin
All right. I'm getting under the table.
Matt Jones
Is this Unpopular Opinion Day or not?
Ryan Lemon
It is.
Matt Jones
I mean, the bosses, Shannon, the bosses have to agree with Unpopular Opinion Day too, right?
Shannon The Dude
I guess so. I guess so. Let's.
Matt Jones
This is nobody in particular's fault. I don't blame any individual in particular, but my unpopular opinion is very simple. The pregame and post game shows for University of Kentucky athletics are the worst things on the airwaves and have to be fixed. They are insanely boring. They do not capture what it means to get excited for a game and to come down from a game, and we have to fix them. I'm not saying we have to change anybody that's on them, but we have to change how they're programmed. And I come to this from the Reds and from the Hurricanes, these two teams that I've gotten big on. I watched their pregame and post game and listened to their pregame and post game for every big game. Last night, I listened to the Reds radio post game, I listened to Lance McAllister. After that, I wanted it to go into the night. And when it comes to UK games, it's the opposite. There are too many ads, there are too many planned segments and there is too much non interaction with what makes the BBN great. That the shows to me are not good. The people on them, I think they could be good but you got to let them have personalities. And that's not just Buzz and Cameron screaming at each call and calling each other butt faced. Like there has to be a better time spent trying to program the pre and post game shows that are non KSR for our fan base. That is my unpopular opinion. Ryan.
Ryan Lemon
Drew, I'm not going to argue because you know, we do our pregame show and kind of we feel like, I feel like we build up all this momentum and excitement and then it just.
Matt Jones
Goes.
Ryan Lemon
Come to a screeching halt sometimes. So.
Matt Jones
And I'm not blaming the people, I like the people. But it's got to be better. Jmi. You have to produce shows people want to listen to.
Ryan Lemon
You're right. That postgame show, you come up a.
Matt Jones
Big win and it's just, it's 10 minutes of commercials and then it's like, well, Western Kentucky tonight beat Louisiana Tech 13. It's like no to give me some excitement. Give me outside of the stadium. Drew. I think it's, that's going to be unpopular to people in charge, but I think most of the fans would actually agree with me.
Drew Franklin
I think it's pretty popular to the fan base. I've heard that a lot. I agree with it. You have to realize the moment you're in and either ride that wave into the game or ride that wave out of the game. I remember specifically the show where cash put Ryan through a table and it felt like everyone around KS Bar was ready to run through a wall to go beat Georgia, whoever it was. And then that energy kind of got sucked out.
Matt Jones
Here's a taped interview with Eli Capilouto about the changes on the tennis team.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I think it went straight into a Barnhart tape.
Matt Jones
I mean, come on.
Drew Franklin
On the next show.
Matt Jones
Come on. 859280 shorty 287 text machine, 772-774-5254. We'll take your calls. Unpopular opinion day here on KSR.

Matt Jones
CT mobile dot com. All right, unpopular opinion so far. Seems like mine is the most popular, which means I've probably succeeded the least in being unpopular. Drew's is by far the most unpopular. One person writes, drew has always been my favorite on the show. He's now last. I use ketchup on catfish, hush puppies and honestly, most things in the day. I would fight Drew if I saw him say that to my face.
Drew Franklin
Well, I don't fight children, so I couldn't fight back.
Shannon The Dude
I got to step in and defend Drew a little bit. I'm with him on this ketchup thing. I hate.
Matt Jones
Come on. Hate it.
Ryan Lemon
I love it.
Shannon The Dude
So I'm with you on that.
Matt Jones
I think though, there are some things you got to have it on. You have to have it on fries. I wouldn't put it on catfish, but I think on hush puppies. Yes. Yeah, yeah.
Drew Franklin
I don't even put it on fries.
Shannon The Dude
I don't either.
Matt Jones
That's crazy.
Shannon The Dude
I'm going to dip it. I'll do like honey mustard, maybe barbecue sauce, even hot sauce.
Matt Jones
I do like hot sauce. I will say one person writes, my unpopular opinion is horse racing is not a sport. We treat it like it is and the animals do all the work. I think it is a hobby, but it is not a sport.
Shannon The Dude
Well, I think there was a horse that lost its jockey in a race this year and actually won the race. So that is validates the guy's opinion.
Matt Jones
Ryan, do you agree with that?
Ryan Lemon
You know, I agree with that. I thought that about horse racing. Yeah. I think it's. We treat it like it's some kind of grand NFL super bowl deal. And it's not. It's just. It's horses. They're animals. They poop in public. It's not as.
Matt Jones
So do you. I don't. I got no problem with that. I like horse race. One person writes. Matt, my unpopular opinion for Reds fans is Barry Larkin is the worst color analyst in the history of baseball. Between me and you, because, see, I got no loyalty to the Reds. Pre2020, 2019. He is. He's so boring. Jeff Brantley is so much better.
Ryan Lemon
The cat Brantley is really good.
Matt Jones
Brantley is awesome. And Barry Larkin is a snooze fest. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he's a snooze fest. Like last night, you know, I listened to the highlights after the game's over. He's just boring. Even on the most exciting plays, you got to do like the art. Play by play guy is good. What's his name? Sadak. That dude's good. But Barry Lark is a snooze fest. I totally agree with you. That may be unpopular Reds fans, but they're wrong. He's a snooze fest.
Ryan Lemon
There's no comparison with him and Brantley. Brantley, like.
Matt Jones
Brantley's great.
Ryan Lemon
Give some personality to it.
Matt Jones
Brantley's great. Larkin's a snooze fest. All right, let's get to the phones. Andy, what's your unpopular opinion? You got like 40 seconds. All right, so Shannon enforced this. I'll give people a little bit longer. Go ahead.
E
I think they should do away with bowl games all together. Unless they're in the college football playoffs. They've got boring. They're meaningless. People's entering the portal. People's opting out. And you. It's just you don't have the same team playing in that game as you would the team that's playing throughout the season.
Matt Jones
All right. Appreciate it, Andy. I don't think that's a crazy point. I actually think a lot of people would agree with that. I like them because, honestly, Drew, I want to be able to go to some because I think we're not going to the playoff. But do you agree or disagree with him?
Drew Franklin
I'm going to disagree, but it's not. It's not that crazy to say that I enjoy them. It's more things to gamble on. It makes the bowl season entertaining. Even if some of the games have a lot of opt out. So I will slightly disagree.
Matt Jones
They Got to figure out a way to stop the opt outs and probably the only way is to require them to get their final check after the game. Right. That's probably the only way you're going to be able to do it or give like a bonus for playing in it. So they get money. But in general, if you can do something about the opt outs, I'm fine with having the games.
Ryan Lemon
I'm okay with Andy saying, you know, eliminate some of the bowl games. We've got way, just way too many. But yet if you're a school like, you know, Western Kentucky, man, it's a chance to play in a bowl game, reward your team after a good season. So I can see it both ways.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Brady, unpopular opinion.
E
Hey, so the last 25 years, Woodson, Lorenzen and Levis are not the best QBs. Easily. Lynn Bowden.
Matt Jones
Well, he only was quarterback for a handful of games and barely threw the ball. So I don't. I think that's going to be not only unpopular. I think that's kind of wrong. Okay, there you go. I appreciate the call.
Shannon The Dude
Shannon is responsible. You lost the.
Matt Jones
I know. I actually like that. It's kind of like the dude says, you could come here or not.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah. You know, indifferent.
Matt Jones
You. Somebody says something to you in a debate and you don't know what to say, you just.
Ryan Lemon
His argument would be, it sure was exciting. Every snap when Lynn Bowden was a quarterback.
Matt Jones
I will say that on TikTok, which Ryan hates, there's this guy and he just takes Drew football highlights of people in college and he just watches them. And the other day it came up, he did Lynn Bowden and he went nuts. He was like, wait a minute, this dude played quarterback, wide receiver, running back and ran back kicks. Who is this dude? And that's true. We got used to it. But it is kind of amazing what he did.
Drew Franklin
And we're probably getting to a point pretty soon where people didn't watch him live. And like the guy on TikTok who are reacting to it, they're going to be like, what in the hell was this thing? Yeah, you're not supposed to be able to do this.
Matt Jones
He played quarterback, wide receiver, running back. Like who plays all three? Nobody.
Ryan Lemon
Nobody.
Drew Franklin
And Kentucky would line up and everyone, everyone knew they were running. Everyone knew they were running and he.
Ryan Lemon
Would still pick up. Still couldn't stop him.
Matt Jones
Do we. Is. Can we go ahead and tell the Vince Merrill story now about that or is that still against. Is that still like a no?
Ryan Lemon
Well, I think you can tell it now.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, he left us.
Ryan Lemon
He left.
Matt Jones
Okay, we'll tell a little bit. I'll do a little bit later. But it's a great story and it drew about the.
Drew Franklin
Oh yeah, it's one of my favorite.
Matt Jones
It's maybe my favorite story about football. The football related thing. Nick, Go ahead, Nick.
E
All right, guys, I'm going to strike a nerve specifically with all four of you all and probably a lot of Kentucky. Please let me explain.
Matt Jones
You got 40 seconds.
E
Did not. Perfect. I did not enjoy the Kentucky, the KSR shows that Jared Lorenzen hosted. Please let me explain. One second. It wasn't anything Jared did. He was amazing. First great human being. Great on the post and pre game shows and everything. When he hosted ksr, it was great. It was awesome. But then it just turned into an hour and a half fest of people just saying like Chris Farley did on snl. Hey, you remember that one time you threw the ball here and you ran here? That was great, man. Hey, man, you remember this? I love you, man. And Jared, the whole time was like, yeah, man, thanks. Appreciate it. Yeah. All right, next caller. Hey, man, I love you too. Me too, man. It was just that over. Overall, he's a great human being. Loved him. But the shows he hosted, not to his fault. We're not the best.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I get what you're saying. I appreciate the call. I think he was a great co host but there was a little bit of like you were awesome. But I thought as a, as a game analyst and stuff, I loved him. Greatest guy. We'll be right back. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call tj. He'll make him pay.
Shannon The Dude
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome back Tucky Sports Radio. Mario, just wondered in here. Here in Louisville he's been. Today is his one Louisville day of the week where he has to spend time with all the boring people. Shannon, where he comes up here.
Shannon The Dude
Don't talk about Vanetti like that.
Matt Jones
Yeah, Vanetti, Terry, Miners, he gets all them. He doesn't get to hang out with us. He always looks sad, but today he looks a little, a little more excited. One person writes, Matt, okay, so you don't like the pre and post game shows. What would you do with them? Something different, you know, I mean there's a lot of things you could do. Part of it is you could have different people do it to bring energy. I'm not volunteering myself because I don't need more work, but. But you I like. I thought Ryan Rex Chapman was great at it. I know everybody gets mad at his political opinions, but I thought he was really good when he did those, you know? Do you remember those few years of doing it? Like, just tell him, look, Rex, man, you can't talk about politics. When I did those games, I didn't so, like just do that. I think Tom's great, I think Jack's great. You know, I think Dave is great, but. But like he and Cameron need to just bring it down a notch. Stop screaming at each other. They're both smart. Just talk football pregame. You got to get the atmosphere of the tailgate. Like there's no atmosphere of the tailgate. Like I don't, I barely know you're at the game. You know, at KS Bar, we have the atmosphere. KS Bar, you guys are at the actual games. You gotta like get that in there. And in the post game, the postgame show is a disaster because they don't do anything postgame except just like kill time until the coach talks. And a postgame show should not be kill time. Drew gets the atmosphere great. Right after games, he's outside with the fans, talking to him. Like his, his post game thing. What do you call it again, Drew?
Drew Franklin
The rapid reaction.
Matt Jones
Rapid reaction is awesome.
Drew Franklin
Subscribe.
Matt Jones
In a perfect world, what you ought to do is just combine it with KSRS and have us take calls until the coach and players are ready. But if you don't want to do that because you don't want to have criticisms, then you got to find a way to get people's reaction. You got to make people feel like they're at the game. The Reds last night, those dudes are sitting out in the thing and so people are like, you got to get that excitement. And we just don't do that, Ryan, at all. So it just feels sterile as it can be.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, I'm with you. My, my biggest complaint has been with the post game show. Cause after a big win, people are excited, man. They want to talk about it, they want to get on board. They don't want to hear scores from across Conference USA calls.
Matt Jones
Like just immediately. If it were me, if I'm jmi, I would just say, look, this calling thing, I mean, we got people staying up 2:30 in the morning to call and then you give an hour of. Well, Eastern was playing Morehead today in baseball and it was. I take that nobody wants to hear that. So that's. My people are still mad about the ketchup. I mean, I know, yeah, they're worked up. That's the most unpopular opinion you've Ever had, Ryan. There's. Shoot Me, Drew. There's no doubt. You didn't play that song, did you, Shannon? Because I didn't.
Shannon The Dude
You wanted to set it up.
Matt Jones
No, no. We'll play it leading into the next break, and then I'll say what it is after. All right, let's go. Jimmy. Jimmy. Unpopular opinion.
E
Hey. So I wanted to preface my remarks by saying that I love Mark Pope. And I think from the moment Pope was announced, I was fully for him. And I realized that Cal had his problems. I mean, the win loss record wasn't good, the tournament wasn't good, and his press conferences weren't good. But I think Cal was mistreated. And I think all through the fan base, but including the ksr, I just felt like he was a sitting duck. I don't think it would have mattered if he won the national championship. I think it was kind of unfair the way we treated.
Matt Jones
Do you think. Now, that is a part. That's. That's a fair opinion for today. Do you think losing to Oakland and St. Peter's two of three years was acceptable?
E
Absolutely not.
Matt Jones
So then what. How did we. Then how did we. But then how did we. Then how did people treat him wrong?
E
Well, I just think it was. It was a sitting. He was a sitting duck. I mean, he was kind of caught with his pants down. And I. I don't think it would have mattered what he did. I think if he'd won the national championship. These people were just so rabid. Anti cow.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And I can always speak for me.
E
Due to his own thought.
Matt Jones
Yeah. All right, fair enough. I appreciate the call. I can always speak for me, Ryan. If he had won the national championship, I'd have been good with him.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I would go so far as to say if he won a couple games in the tournament, I'd have been good with him. So, you know. Hey, unpopular opinion, Adam. Go ahead. Adam. Drew, I'm 100% with you, buddy. Thank you.
Shannon The Dude
Only belongs on the children's menu.
Drew Franklin
Nice to meet a fellow adult here on the radio.
Matt Jones
Hey, so I'm about to take a.
Shannon The Dude
Lot of people off, but I think.
E
Kentucky Derby is the most overrated sporting event that.
Matt Jones
That there is. Why? It's just a.
E
It has become just a five hour.
Matt Jones
You know, TV event where people that are not even from Kentucky come and say, look at me. Then there's a two minute race and.
E
It'S back to look at me. It's just a narcissistic celebrity event that, you know.
Matt Jones
Okay, I appreciate the call, Ryan. I kind of feel like you might agree with that.
Ryan Lemon
I 100% agree with that. I think that goes the fact I had to be there at 6 o' clock in the morning for 12 years to cover that dang thing. The race last two minutes. I think it's way over hyped, way overblown. And we in Kentucky don't care about it until Derby Day. That's the only. It's not a big deal to us the other 364 days of the year, but the Derby Day is the only day we care about it.
Matt Jones
Do you think it's a narcissistic event? Look at me.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, yeah, you kidding?
Shannon The Dude
Look at how well I can dress. Look at my suit.
Ryan Lemon
Look at my new hat. Look at my purple suit.
Matt Jones
All right, I'm okay. Hang on. That's a personal shot directly at me. What was that? I disagree. Drew, I'll. I think you and I'll take up for the Derby. It's good for the state. I think it's exciting to have the biggest event in America be taking place in our state. The whole nation turns its attention to here. I wish it wasn't quite as aristocratic. I wish there was more, kind of for the common person. That was part of it. I think that's gone away in recent years, but overall, I still think it's good.
Drew Franklin
I agree. But I will say there are people. It's not the entire percentage of people at Churchill Downs, but a lot of people make it. Just look at what I'm wearing.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but some of them are good looking. Like, I understand why they would do it. Like they. They're, like they're showing off. Is that bad?
Drew Franklin
No. No.
Matt Jones
Mario looked at the thing. Is he not supposed to look sharp?
Drew Franklin
I'm guilty, too. I started thinking about my derby outfit a month in advance. But I mean, the overall event. I wouldn't label the whole event that way is my point.
Matt Jones
There are people, Shannon. I clean socks.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I put on like, my best boxer briefs that day. Like you put on.
Shannon The Dude
You do shower.
Matt Jones
I show. I shower. That's exactly right. Brad, what's your unpopular opinion?
E
Well, I don't like skywan Chili.
Shannon The Dude
Appreciate the call.
Matt Jones
Appreciate the call. That's not even that unpopular. That's not even that unpopular.
E
No, I mean, I. I feel like you have a, you know, great taste, but I tried it and I just couldn't. Couldn't get into it. I. I don't know if it's just the noodles and the chili or something.
Matt Jones
It's definitely a yes or no thing for people. I appreciate the call. I love it. But I can see why people wouldn't.
Shannon The Dude
Like it two nights ago.
Matt Jones
But it's a yes or no thing, right? Like, you either immediately in one day, in one bite, like it or you hate it. There's no in between.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah. So, you know, now you can even get it in the grocery store. I don't have a skyline close to me like you do, so I got some at the grocery store, and it's still good. Even really heated up in a microwave. It's good.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I don't think I would want to eat in the grocery store.
Ryan Lemon
It's pretty.
Shannon The Dude
Well, look again. If you don't live close to a skyline and you want skyline, it's the best you can get.
Matt Jones
I guess that's true. Jerry. Unpopular opinion.
E
Hey, Matt. My unpopular opinion is I think we.
Matt Jones
Should get rid of My Old Kentucky Home. It's a minstrel song.
E
If people knew the context of that song.
Matt Jones
Excuse me. That song.
E
I don't think people would support it.
Matt Jones
Okay. Usually have a new state song. Yeah. This is probably said, appreciate the call, Ryan. Once every couple years on this. So it goes to kind of what you. What you want your state song to be. Right. Because he's. What he just said is not controversial. If you go to the history of the song, it's not a good history. It's just not. If you go read what it is, it's not a good song, but it's also very beautiful. It's also a song that I think brings about an emotion in people, and the vast majority of people don't think about the lyrics the way it was intended, and they think about it a different way. A way that is sort of like Shannon Born in the USA has become a song that wasn't what it was when it was written. Right. Like, it means something different now than it did when it was written.
Shannon The Dude
And I think people probably don't even know, and most people don't even know.
Matt Jones
Why Bruce Springsteen wrote that song. So, like, I've. I've had people over the years challenge me on that. I generally say keep it because of the history. But I do understand. Ryan, the other opinion.
Ryan Lemon
I do, too, because the original lyrics.
Matt Jones
Were very racially insensitive, and they've changed some of them.
Ryan Lemon
They've changed some of the lyrics. But still, I think a lot of the older black people in Kentucky still remember how. What that song really stands for and do not like it at all as our state song.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So I get it. But there is Something about when they. When you get to that chorus again at the derby and it says weep no more, my lady, that I actually, I find really powerful. I do not think those were drew. We should sing it at UK games because I think it slows everything down. Maybe at the end, but sometimes when. You know, there were times I used to play it before I was against that. That was not. That's not the excitement level you need for a game.
Drew Franklin
What are your thoughts on how we play Doomis Walker after every game should be gone.
Shannon The Dude
This is more upbeat, though.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
Big win. This big exciting win. And then it's weep no more violating.
Matt Jones
Agreed.
Shannon The Dude
What are we doing?
Matt Jones
I agree. I agree. Like, we need more upbeat things. It's getting better. The music and everything with UK sports is better than it was.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah. I love it at the derby, but not after a contender's.
Matt Jones
Good. Because it's sort of the ceremonial walkout. Right. Like, you're not trying to pump the horses up. They'll go crazy if you do that.
Shannon The Dude
Right. We're not playing Thunderstruck.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Attention, bourbon lovers. Commonwealth causes back with their June bourbon raffle. And you're not going to want to miss it. CT mobile.com All right, so Shannon, this is Bill Taylor and the Appalachian Heathens.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
What a great name.
Shannon The Dude
What a great voice.
Matt Jones
Bill Taylor and the Appalachian heathens on America's got talent last night. And where are they from? Middlesboro, Kentucky. No way Middlesboro, Kentucky gets on America's got Talent last night. I didn't find out until my mom texted me right as it was on. And then they got the made the cut. 4 yeses if you were to listen to the end. They all talk about, including Simon cow, how good they are. And they now move on to the next round. And of course, we will be following my Middlesboro brethren. The Appalachian heathen just played the Laurel Cove festival two weeks ago. America's got talent. Ryan, congrats to Middlesboro showing up and what a voice.
Ryan Lemon
That is so cool, man. Just, you know, the little, little guy on the big stage and killing it like that. Absolutely fantastic.
Shannon The Dude
So you were aware of them before this?
Matt Jones
I know. I just knew that they existed but had never heard him play. Never heard him see. Wow, Listen to that. It's great. Shout out to Laurel Cove festival in Pineville. They had it a couple of weeks ago. It rained a lot, but people started great. It's become like this cool little niche festival that has really taken over and it is launching acts left and right. John Grace runs it down there. Big shout out to them. But we will be following Bill Taylor and the Appalachian Heathens. I'm gonna make Shannon play more of that song when we have more time to talk about it. 859-280-2287. Text machine. 772-774-5254. Drew's catching strays on here all the. I mean, like this. Is this the meanest people have ever been to Drew?
Drew Franklin
Go get your happy meal, kids.
Matt Jones
Unpopular opinion. One person writes Drew became the worst on the show after he wrot why fans shouldn't be upset about losing guys in the portal. Yeah, he ended up being right. But it was like Drew the journalist, not Drew the fan.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. And I was right. And I'm right again. Stop eating ketchup.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I don't understand why I'd be upset at you if you were right.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I was very right. And then I ran it back again this year and was right again. I'm going to do it again next year, that same post.
Ryan Lemon
Why you got to talk bad about ketchup, though? Everybody loves ketchup.
Drew Franklin
No, everyone doesn't love ketchup.
Matt Jones
One person writes my unpopular opinion. Nobody over 12 should wear their hat backwards. Adult. Adult men look ridiculous with their hat backwards. Generally speaking, I agree with you. I've had that opinion ever since I saw this man from Bell County. I'm not going to say his name. His name was Bill Hayes one time walking through a football stadium, and he was, like, in his 40s, and he's had his hat on backwards. I was in high school, and I was like, okay, that looks ridiculous. So I agree with you. But, Shannon, women do like when you wear your hat back.
Shannon The Dude
Well, I saw a guy from Bell county with his hat on backwards in Milwaukee.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And it's because women do like it. And I. And I agree with you. I think it looks ridiculous. But I've had women say, like, you should wear your hat backwards. So I can't do it in public. I did it that day in Milwaukee, Shannon. But I. But in general, I agree with that principle.
Shannon The Dude
Look, why don't you just do what you want to do what you want to not worry about what other people think.
Matt Jones
That's exactly right. Mario walked in here. What's your unpopular opinion? And talking to the microphone. You know how they say, like, breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Yes. I don't believe in it. I don't. I don't even believe it.
Shannon The Dude
I don't believe in it.
Matt Jones
You don't eat any breakfast.
Drew Franklin
Unpopular opinion. Breakfast is overrated.
Matt Jones
No breakfast. I'm gonna leave it at that. You don't eat sausage? No. Ham? No.
Drew Franklin
No.
Matt Jones
My eggs. My first meal is, like, at 12, and it's lunch. No.
Ryan Lemon
You won't even need to eat a donut. You don't like to go to the show?
Drew Franklin
I've tried to buy Mario breakfast several times on our road trips. He wants nothing to do with the meal.
Matt Jones
You just don't like the do. Would you eat breakfast later in the day? Like, do you like omelets?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I'd eat, like, breakfast for dinner. I'd eat breakfast for dinner.
Matt Jones
But you're not eating breakfast.
Drew Franklin
I'm not hungry at that time.
Matt Jones
At 9:10am I'll just wait till like 1 or 2.
Shannon The Dude
So it's not the type of food. It's the time of day.
Matt Jones
You just don't like eating in the morning.
Shannon The Dude
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Yeah. All right, well, there you go. Unpopular opinion. There's Mario. Go back to the boring people. 85928, 2287. Andrew, what's your unpopular opinion?
E
Big Blue Madness is incredibly stale. I feel like our social media department has gotten tons better. And Matt, you've been a wrestling fan. And Shannon, you understand that we could go back to having themes. Tubby did it. It was. It was themed. They could put out corny trailers. We've got Mark Pope. He's the king of cheese. Let him be cheesy. Lean into it. Let it be exciting.
Matt Jones
I don't even think that's unpopular. I totally agree with you. I appreciate the call. Not unpopular to me at all. Ryan. Big Blue Madness. Boring. They need to fix it or do something else. Like, it's just not that. Like, we. We nat. We went from having the best one to if you watch some of the other ones, one of the worst ones. Got it. Got to get it better.
Ryan Lemon
And I think that's what people were hoping. With Pope, there's that breath of fresh air. He was here when Patino was doing the crazy thing, riding out like in Batman and Robin or on a Harley or something. So I think maybe, maybe it might get back to a little bit of that.
Matt Jones
We were beholden, drew to the kind of cow I got to give my state of the union speech and all that. Okay, so we're not anymore. So now's a good time to change.
Drew Franklin
And I think Pope's a good guy to do it. It might even be corny at times, but he's not afraid to try something new and let anyone dao cal. There's this. I gotta be cool at all times. I gotta be this big a list celebrity figure. Pope will throw on a Batman costume and swing down from the rafters if he needs to. Might not always work, but he'll be willing to try new things.
Matt Jones
Mario just texted me. Vanetti's got his hat on backwards right now.
Shannon The Dude
It doesn't surprise me.
Matt Jones
Jason and Greensburg, go ahead.
E
Hey, guys. Good morning. I want to preface this by saying that this is an unpopular opinion I've had for almost 23 years. If you go back to my. My uncle, who is now deceased, was a decades long booster and season ticket holder. Occasionally, I would get some free tickets given to me. I don't. He was one of the ones in the. In the.
Matt Jones
All right, so what's your opinion? What's the opinion? Go ahead.
E
My opinion is that I don't think the eruption zones should have been moved into that section where they're at Rep Arena.
Matt Jones
Where should they be?
E
I don't know. I don't know. I mean, I guess.
Matt Jones
Oh, you think they should have worse seats? No, no, no, no, no. Just yes or no. Do you think they should have worse seats?
E
Yes.
Matt Jones
Okay. Okay. I like that. That is an unpopular opinion, Drew. Not that we should move the. Gonna have to do it quick because these are taking too long. Go.
E
Okay. So. Okay. No. So he was a decades long donor, and when they got moved, they raised the price that had to be donated to the K fund and then got pushed back to worst seat.
Matt Jones
Okay. All right. I appreciate the call. So he's taking up for the donors. Insane. Drew. They should have. We should have less seats for the students. I like that opinion because it is very unpopular.
Drew Franklin
I like this. He's wanting to steal from the poor and give to the rich.
Matt Jones
Different. Yeah.
Shannon The Dude
Put the students up in the upper.
Matt Jones
Basically a house Republican. Now he's like, there. We. These poor people have too much.
Shannon The Dude
It's the opposite of what I want.
Matt Jones
Exact opposite. I like it. But you know what we say? We want unpopular opinion.
Ryan Lemon
Yep.
Matt Jones
Popular opinion. Move the students close to the floor. Unpopular opinion. Make them sit outside. That's. That's. That's an unpopular opinion. We'll take a break, come back. Our number two, SKSR.
KSR Podcast Episode Summary
Episode: 2025-06-25- KSR - Hour 1
Release Date: June 25, 2025
Hosts: Matt Jones, Drew Franklin, Ryan Lemon, Shannon "The Dude"
Produced by: iHeartPodcasts and Sports Talk 790 (WKRD-AM)
In this special edition of Kentucky Sports Radio (KSR), host Matt Jones reintroduces the popular segment Unpopular Opinion Day, an event paused for two years but eagerly anticipated by both hosts and listeners. This segment invites callers to share their controversial or minority viewpoints related to UK sports or the state of Kentucky, steering clear of political topics to maintain a respectful and engaging environment.
Matt Jones [01:06]:
“Unpopular Opinion Day… you pick an opinion. It can be about UK sports or the state of Kentucky. It has to be unpopular. You are in the minority in this position… no politics.”
The episode kicks off with an enthusiastic recap of the recent Reds game, celebrating Chase Burns' remarkable debut performance. Burns struck out the first five batters he faced, a feat not seen since 1960.
Matt Jones [03:37]:
“Chase Burns comes out, strikes out the first five batters. First pitcher since 1960 to strike out the first five batters of his major league career.”
Ryan Lemon [03:55]:
“You had to be excited about what you saw last night.”
The hosts express their excitement over the game, highlighting key moments like Burns' strikeouts and the Reds' comeback in extra innings. They compare it to memorable past performances, emphasizing its significance for the team’s fans.
Drew Franklin sparks the conversation with a contentious stance on ketchup usage, advocating that ketchup should be reserved for children and discouraged for adults in restaurant settings.
Drew Franklin [07:21]:
“I do not think that you should be able to use ketchup over the age of 12 if you ask for ketchup. I think they should also bring you a coloring book and crayons, and you have to sit there like a child and put ketchup on your…”
This opinion ignites a playful debate among the hosts, with some agreeing and others defending their fondness for ketchup.
Shannon "The Dude" presents an optimistic yet unpopular opinion about the Kentucky football team, asserting that despite general pessimism, the team will achieve six wins this season.
Shannon The Dude [09:09]:
“This year. I think it will happen. I think… I believe this team will get to six wins.”
The proposition challenges the prevailing negative expectations, leading to discussions on potential games that could secure the necessary victories.
Ryan Lemon voices a strong dislike for TikTok, labeling it as "trash" due to its perceived focus on younger demographics and political opinions that don’t align with his interests.
Ryan Lemon [10:55]:
“I think TikTok is trash. I tried to get on it and everybody's… it’s all geared to under 21, 25-year-old people and other people just giving me their political opinions.”
This viewpoint prompts Matt to explore possible reasons for Ryan's negative experience, such as algorithmic content targeting, though Ryan remains firm in his stance.
Matt Jones offers a critical perspective on the quality of pregame and postgame shows for University of Kentucky athletics, deeming them "insanely boring" and ineffective in capturing the excitement of the games.
Matt Jones [12:50]:
“The pregame and postgame shows for University of Kentucky athletics are the worst things on the airwaves and have to be fixed. They are insanely boring. They do not capture what it means to get excited for a game and to come down from a game.”
He suggests that these shows suffer from excessive commercials, lack of engaging content, and insufficient interaction with fans, contrasting them with more dynamic broadcasts like those of the Reds and Hurricanes.
Several callers contribute their own unpopular opinions, ranging from criticisms of specific sports practices to broader cultural observations.
Caller on Horse Racing:
Caller [18:14]:
“Horse racing is not a sport. We treat it like it is and the animals do all the work. I think it is a hobby, but it is not a sport.”
Caller on Barry Larkin as a Color Analyst:
Caller [18:29]:
“Barry Larkin is the worst color analyst in the history of baseball. He is so boring. Jeff Brantley is so much better.”
These opinions facilitate lively discussions among the hosts, who often express agreement or offer counterpoints, enriching the conversation with their diverse perspectives.
A heated debate ensues regarding the Kentucky Derby's portrayal as a major sporting event. While some callers and hosts argue that it has become overly commercialized and narcissistic, others defend its cultural significance and economic impact on Kentucky.
Caller [29:25]:
“It has become just a five-hour TV event where people that are not even from Kentucky come and say, ‘Look at me.’”
Matt Jones [30:08]:
“I think it’s good for the state. The whole nation turns its attention to here. I wish it wasn't quite as aristocratic. I wish there was more for the common person.”
This exchange highlights the tension between traditional cultural values and evolving societal attitudes toward such events.
As the episode progresses, the hosts touch upon additional unpopular opinions from listeners, including critiques of specific menu items and state symbols. They emphasize the importance of embracing diverse viewpoints while maintaining respect and open dialogue.
Final Caller on Breakfast:
Caller [40:25]:
“Breakfast is overrated. I don't even believe in it.”
The segment wraps up with hosts reflecting on the variety of opinions shared, acknowledging both agreement and respectful disagreement, reinforcing the show's commitment to airing all perspectives without judgment.
Matt Jones [01:06]:
“You pick an opinion. It can be about UK sports or the state of Kentucky. It has to be unpopular.”
Drew Franklin [07:21]:
“I do not think that you should be able to use ketchup over the age of 12…”
Shannon The Dude [09:09]:
“I believe this team will get to six wins.”
Ryan Lemon [10:55]:
“I think TikTok is trash…”
Matt Jones [12:50]:
“The pregame and postgame shows… are insanely boring.”
Caller on Horse Racing [18:14]:
“Horse racing is not a sport. I think it is a hobby, but it is not a sport.”
Caller on Barry Larkin [18:29]:
“Barry Larkin is the worst color analyst in the history of baseball.”
Caller on Kentucky Derby [29:25]:
“It has become just a five-hour TV event…”
Final Caller on Breakfast [40:25]:
“Breakfast is overrated. I don't even believe in it.”
This episode of KSR delves deep into diverse and often contentious viewpoints, fostering an environment where listeners can hear and reflect on opinions that challenge the status quo. Through spirited discussions and respectful exchanges, Matt Jones and his co-hosts provide an engaging platform for meaningful conversations surrounding UK sports and Kentucky state matters.
