It is a beautiful day. Actually not crazy hot yet. As long as you stay out of the sun. We got some food here from Drake's. I'm gonna give away Reds tickets, but right now, join me. Darius Miller, national champion for the University of Kentucky. State champion. National champion. Everything you could want right here as a Kentucky basketball player. Darius, thank you very much for joining us.
Darius Miller
Now, I appreciate.
Matt Jones
Put that mic down so people can hear you there.
Darius Miller
Got you. Gotcha. I appreciate y' all having me.
Matt Jones
So that better? That's better, yes. So, Darius, first of all, when I think of, like, from the state of Kentucky, how you would want a basketball career to go, Ryan, I'm not sure you could have a better one than this, right? I mean, if you look at your high school career, your college career, play in the NBA, how blessed are you? From what? From what? From when you were growing up in Mason county to now?
Darius Miller
Extremely blessed, man. Extremely blessed. And I've been fortunate to play on some great teams, you know, play for some great coaches. I've ended up in some great situations, you know, and I don't take that for granted. So, like, I think the word that you use, blessed, is the perfect word, man. It's been an incredible run, amazing opportunity, and I embrace every second of it.
Matt Jones
Let's go through your career here a little bit. You decide to come to college, a lot of people forget this. For Billy Gillespie, you were there with the Billy Clyde era for one year. Talk to me about when you made that decision. And what was the year? What was the Billy Clyde year like?
Darius Miller
My man, Billy G. My man, Billy G. Yeah, it was. It was interesting. It was interesting. When I made the decision, I think I would have done it again, you know, going back, I wouldn't have made a different choice. But, you know, it was the team that kind of brought me in. Patrick Patterson, Jody Meeks, Ramon Harris, Perry Stevenson, all great character guys. They really, you know, wrapped Their arms around me. Every visit I came made me feel comfortable. I got a chance to play with them a little bit, you know, just an open gym. When I came up, I loved the chemistry that we had, you know, and they, they, they invited me in, you know, and made me a part of the team, which ultimately led to me committing to the University of Kentucky. And then I got there. Billy G. So let me ask you.
Matt Jones
A couple questions about Billy G. First of all, I want. Let's start with this because I'm asking you some of the goofy questions, but let's start with the one thing. There was a positive side to Billy G. That a lot of people gets washed over because everything talk about that for a minute. The positive ability.
Darius Miller
For sure. There was, there was. And he was a good ex and O guy.
Matt Jones
Was he?
Darius Miller
Yes, he really was. He knew the game of basketball. His just. His delivery was off a little bit, you know, which is important when you're dealing with, you know, 17, 18 year old boys. So it's like, so you were there.
Matt Jones
Is it true that John Wall came for a visit? There's, there's always some story. What was the story about John Wall's visit that like Billy told him to stop talking or something on his visit? Do you know, is that true?
Darius Miller
That probably happened to more than just John Wall.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Darius Miller
Yeah, that was a constant. It was a play throughout. Yeah, for sure.
Matt Jones
All right. Did our friend Josh Harrelson get locked in the bathroom stall?
Darius Miller
He got sent to the bathroom. They didn't lock it, but yeah, yeah, my boy got sent to the bathroom.
Matt Jones
Was he forced to come home from the V by himself?
Darius Miller
He wasn't by himself, but he wasn't with the team. But he wasn't with.
Matt Jones
He has a good way of delivering all this. Yeah, that's right. You're saying it in the nicest way possible. Did you ever have to do the drills? This was the year before you. I don't know if it continued your year where he would just make you all dive on the ground time and time. Talk about that.
Darius Miller
Yeah, we. A bunch of different drills, you know, to make us more physical. You know, a lot of charge drills.
Matt Jones
Oh, like taking charge drills?
Darius Miller
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Things you would think Gladiators would do different stuff like that.
Matt Jones
For sure. All right. So then John Caliperi shows up. Most of the team. Well, pretty much all the team that was not seniors were kind of shake their hand and say, hey, find other homes. Except you and Patrick. Talk to me about when you met Cal. And then what Changed was with Cal.
Darius Miller
A lot changed. I'm not gonna lie. A lot changed. And it happened so quick, but, you know, just different system, different personality, different batch of talent. You know what I mean? It was a lot of adjustments to be made, but the guys that returned, we felt like that was the best situation for us, you know, that was the best situation for us to get better. And that's. That's really what led to us staying.
Matt Jones
Tell me the first time you see John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins play basketball. What's your reaction?
Darius Miller
Oh, God. I had already knew John beforehand. I seen him a lot at different camps, ABCD camp. Just different. Different events like that. But demarcus was a different animal, man. He was coming in. He was so skilled at his size. And they were so hungry, man. They were so hungry. They wanted to win a championship, you know, they are. They wanted to be pros. They wanted to be hall of Famers, you know what I mean? And that was me, honestly. That was my first time really being exposed to that mentality and a different. It was a different batch of talent that was coming in.
Matt Jones
What you could tell, like, it's like this. All right, so I've always made the argument that since I've been doing this, which was like, 2005, there's nothing like the feeling that was around the University of Kentucky program that year just in terms of, like, just rock star LeBron's at the game, Jay Z's at the game. Like, all this stuff is. Ha. You were in it. Did you feel that?
Darius Miller
Yeah, it was amazing, man. It was amazing. No, seriously, I agree with you. That year was different than any other year. Just the. The. The amount of people we were exposed to, the type of people we were exposed to, like you said, that was coming to the game, the amount of eyes that were on us. I mean, it completely changed overnight when Cal and those guys got here. I mean, the pressure was different. It was. It was a lot that went into that change, and we definitely felt it every single day.
Matt Jones
Give me your best DeMarcus cousin story that you can tell. Yeah, that you could tell.
Darius Miller
You know, one of my favorites was his approach to the media before we played that UNC game.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Darius Miller
They had a really, really, really good team, you know, and they came in. It was a lot of talk, us and them. And with him being a younger guy and, you know, going up and talk to the media, I thought it would be a different approach. But he was very aggressive with the way that he talked.
Matt Jones
He called. He'd call Allen Cutler, the mustache guy.
Darius Miller
I'm sure some of y' all remember.
Matt Jones
But he put me in a headlock once, so I can't. I can't. I can't. I can't say. You remember when you played Cornell and he said, this ain't no spelling bee.
Darius Miller
Yeah, yeah. But we fed off of that, though. You know, that gave us a sense of confidence, too, because we. We did have a young team, you know, so we. We all fed off of his energy and, you know, the. The. The approach that he had to the game because he was extremely competitive. So they were kind of like, hey, you guys are the underdog, you know, and he. He was like, no.
Matt Jones
When you watch the Celtics, do you boo because of Joe Missoula beating you guys in the Elite Eight?
Darius Miller
I probably will now. Drew Holiday. I love Drew Holiday.
Matt Jones
Oh, yeah. Played with him in New Orleans.
Darius Miller
Yeah, yeah. So I couldn't boo, but now that he's gone, I definitely will.
Matt Jones
All right, let's go to 2011. You got Brandon Knight, I think one of the most underrated players to play ever play here. Do you agree?
Darius Miller
Definitely. Oh, my gosh. He was so talented. He worked so hard, and he has some really big moments, man. He has some really big moments. He stepped up big, made a lot of great plays for us and pushed us pretty far in the tournament where.
Matt Jones
George throws that ball off Solinger's chest. Did you know you were going to win at that moment right there?
Darius Miller
Yeah, we felt pretty confident, and, you know, we had pulled out a lot of tough games, so I think by that time, our mentality was we can win any game. Similar to, like, how the Pacers were in the playoffs this year.
Matt Jones
I think that. I think you're right. 2012, you know, obviously, last national championship. When you look back at that year, obviously Anthony Davis was a freak. Maybe the best season in UK basketball history. Probably was the best season in UK basketball history. But Michael Kidd Gilchrist was on the. There's the famous story that he asked to sit out in the SEC tournament so that you could start in the final game because he wanted you to, you know, what was that year like?
Darius Miller
It seemed like a special group, definitely, man. And I think the thing that stood out the most was just how quick we clicked. You know what I mean? With those other groups, it took a little time for us to adjust to each other. A lot of big names coming in, but my senior year, that team jailed really, really fast. And I think, you know, with Terence Jones coming back, Duron coming back, we had a little bit More guys that come back that had some experience down the line in the tournament. We were able to, you know, kind of facilitate that a little bit better than in the past. But, yeah, it just happened so fast, and everybody was just totally bought into winning the championship.
Matt Jones
You know, this guy right here, Duron's, like, his favorite player. No, Darius is my favorite player. He's standing right here. Y' all had fun that 2012 season, earlier in the year when the Thunder were there. Yeah. So the Thunder come to town. I want to ask if this story is true. We've told it many years, so I hope it is.
Darius Miller
Yeah. Yeah.
Matt Jones
That you all played the Thunder. The Thunder had. Who all was here? Durant. Was it Durant?
Darius Miller
Durant was here.
Matt Jones
Harden?
Darius Miller
Yes. James was here.
Matt Jones
Russell.
Darius Miller
Russ was here.
Matt Jones
So you all played Harden, Westbrook, and Durant, I'm told first pickup game, it's UK versus them. You guys win, and then Marcus Stevenson, Teague says a line, we is Kentucky. We give no blanks. And then they played you the next game, and, like, you didn't score. Is that story true?
Darius Miller
Yeah. Yeah. I wanted to make sure that second part, because I don't want to get any trouble. You know, I want to start no problems with anybody. But, yeah, no, we. We. We came out and, like I said, those. Those guys, too, they were extremely hungry, you know what I mean? We were trying to see where we were. Those guys were just. They showed up. Half their shoes were untied. They was. You know what I mean? They wasn't really locked in, but we were trying to go at them that first game, and that. That woke them up, though.
Matt Jones
They played, and then they played. All right, Final Four, you get to the. You know, you're playing Louisville. You know what that game means. That's the most nervous Darius I've ever been for a basketball game, and I had not one thing to do with whatever the result would be. You probably understood how important that game was more than anyone that played in it. What were your thoughts leading into it?
Darius Miller
We can't lose. Honestly, I didn't want to be, you know, on the team that lost to Louisville in the Final Four. I just. I didn't. I didn't, to be honest. You know what I mean? And I think the guys understood that, too, how much it would mean to the city of Lexington, all of us that's come through here, love Lexington, love the people in Kentucky, how you embrace us, you know what I mean? It means a lot to us. You know what I mean? So we wanted to do that For Lexington, too, for sure.
Matt Jones
You beat Kansas in the championship. Drew and I were on the floor that night. It's still one of the most special, at least from a fan. Probably the most special night that I've had. What was it like? I mean, not many people get to experience winning championship. Only eight groups have done it. Excuse me here. What eight groups have done it? What do you. What was it like for you?
Darius Miller
Tough. It was difficult, honestly. Amazing, though. It's one of the best moments I've ever had on the basketball court, for sure. Probably the best. And just to do it with the guys that we did it with, like I said, we jailed instantly as soon as they got on campus. We put a lot of work into it. So it was. It was a lot of fun.
Matt Jones
John Caliperi, you hear about a year ago, a little bit longer, going to Arkansas. What's your first reaction?
Darius Miller
Oh, man, I was. I was hurt. I was hurt. I'm not gonna lie. I mean, I understood it. You know what I mean? I understood.
Matt Jones
Why did you we say understand it? I understood it. How did you understand it, you know?
Darius Miller
Cause everything comes to an end. You know what I mean? He wasn't gonna be here forever, and I totally understand that. But I have a lot of love for Cal, and I understand the program wanted to go in a different direction and start over. You know what I mean? And I think the hire that they chose was a great hire.
Matt Jones
What do you. What about Mark Pope?
Darius Miller
I love Coach Pope. I do. I love his approach to the game. I think he's a genius when it comes to basketball. You can see it play out. There's been plenty of time talk about that, like.
Matt Jones
Because you know, it. Having played. What makes Mark such a good. As you say, genius coaching basketball.
Darius Miller
I think you can tell there's been plenty of times, you know, in the first half where we've seen. We were watching a game and it looked like we were struggling a bit, and they went in the halftime and came out and figured it out. You know, that's a big part to coaching and making adjustments, and I think he does a great job of that. And then me being able to see a few practices. In his approach to the game, he really takes it serious as.
Matt Jones
And treats it like, what are the practices like? Like, what's expl. You've been now in three. I mean. Well, obviously been a ton in the NBA. But just think about Billy Gillespie, John Cal Perry, Mark Pope. Tell me the difference between those three types of practices. I think a lot of fans would be Interested because they don't get to see that.
Darius Miller
Yeah, starting with Billy G. It's. He was a more of an old school guy. You know, just, we're going to outwork all other teams. We're going to be in the best shape, going to be the strongest. That was his mentality and approach. And like I said, he has some good X's and O's to put with that. So he wanted us to feel like we're in better shape than everybody. And the practices reflected that. You know, with coach Cal, very competitive practices, Very competitive. We had the talent to do so. So us going against each other was a lot of times more difficult than the game we was going to play at the end of the week. So setting up the practices for everything to be extremely competitive, pushing each other and kind of an iron sharpens, sharpens iron mentality. And then with coach Pope, I feel like it's really technical and, you know, the game's changed a lot since back in the day. Now you have analytics, you have a lot of different things that go into the game. So I can just tell and see, his approach is, like I said, he treats it like a science. Everything is very intentional.
Matt Jones
I've explained. Like, Cal would teach you guys to make your own decisions in some ways, right. He would put you in a spot and say, okay, here, you could do this, this, or this, and read it, right. Pope has a more. We do this, we do this, you can do this or this. But there is a science to it. Do you agree with that?
Darius Miller
Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. There was a lot of freedom inside of Cal's system, you know, and that allowed you to see some of the greatness of John Wall and, you know, Eric Bledsoe, those guys, Jamal Murray. Just the different guys that could express themselves on the court. And, you know, coach Pope, like you said, he said everything is down to the minor detail, but it puts you in a good position also, you know, to showcase your game inside of this structured environment. You know what I mean? Two different approaches, but I would enjoy playing from both.
Matt Jones
Can we do one more segment?

I'm gonn couple questions here, but first let me ask you best player you played with, college or NBA? Who is the. Who's the dude that you go, that's the most talented teammate I know. That's a tough question, but man.
Darius Miller
I'd have to say either Anthony Davis or Shay Shay.
Matt Jones
That's right. I forgot you. You. It's Anthony Davis or Shay. What can you. How about Shay's rise? Did you see it coming?
Darius Miller
No, I don't think I saw it coming like this. I knew he was going to be good for sure. And me getting a taste of his work ethic in Oklahoma, he. He worked so hard. I knew he was going to be, you know, eventually he was going to be great and he already was when I was there. Man, he was doing incredible things when I was in Oklahoma. But just the way that he worked in his mentality, how he approached the game was totally different. But him, man, John, John Wall was crazy. DeMarcus was crazy. Drew Holliday was really good. I've played with some great players, man. I've been fortunate, right?
Matt Jones
I think there's like three dudes who have won a state title in Kentucky and then win a national title at uk. I think it lists like Cliff Hagen, Anthony Epson, you. I think that might be it. But I've heard other guys talk about their greatest win was the high school win, not necessarily their national championship. Like Steve Spurrier said his greatest win in his life was when he won a state baseball title. How do you feel about it and how does that Mason county state championship rank in your mind?
Darius Miller
I totally get that. I totally get that because those are the guys you've been, you grew up with. You know what I mean? I played with those guys since I was second, third grade. And to be able to work and see the growth and the development through the team, you know what I mean? And then our last game, we win a championship. That's. That's a special feeling. So I can totally understand that sentiment for sure.
Matt Jones
Bloomington, Indiana, it's the worst place on the earth. You, you actually caught the worst of it when they stormed the court on their stupid super bowl that they don't shut up about. You actually, it was scary. I saw My own eyes. You were caught underneath some of the fans that stormed the court. All those bums. What was that like? On a serious note, Is that kind of terrifying? Was. Were you looking for someone to help you? We were terrified for you. We were watching you at that moment. We were the arena and I was worried about you, man.
Darius Miller
I was more so pissed off. I'm not going to lie. I was. Cuz we just lost to Indiana. That was horrible in itself. And then, you know, being surrounded by, you know, their celebrations.
Matt Jones
How bad was the crowd that day? I mean, that was. That may be the wildest crowd I've ever been in. I don't know what you think.
Darius Miller
That was a crazy atmosphere for sure. They were. They were jacked up. They were ready for us. Definitely. It was a crazy game.
Matt Jones
You were almost the example of a player getting trampled. That's about as close as we've seen one. I mean, were you. Were you not terrified? A little bit? Yeah.
Darius Miller
Yeah, the guys, I mean, some guys came in and helped me up pretty quick, you know what I mean? But yeah, it was wild, man. I've never experienced anything ever come close.
Matt Jones
To punching one of those stupid Indiana. Didn't your mom got assaulted or something in the crowd that day? Your mom or your dad, Somebody got.
Darius Miller
They, they. They didn't get assaulted, but it was a bit. Bit physical getting out of there for sure.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it was. That. That was wild. That. That's the most insane college environment I've ever seen. Includes the years at Kentucky and at Duke. I've never seen one like it was that game. You needed DeMarcus on that team.
Darius Miller
Wouldn't have been any problems.
Matt Jones
TBT is coming. It was a ton of excitement last year. Are you excited about this year's group?
Darius Miller
Oh, definitely. Definitely. And you know, the, the group that's managing it, they're making it better and better every year. Super excited for the group that's coming out this year. I think they have a really talented team and a chance to win it for sure.
Matt Jones
You should get out there with them. Right? You still can. You can still show them a thing or two, can't you?
Darius Miller
No, man.
Matt Jones
First question he got from Patty when he walked up, you gonna play for tbt? You know, it just, you know, you get to point, you're just like, I just don't have what I had before. I gotta.
Darius Miller
I don't even want it that bad anymore.
Matt Jones
You know what I mean?
Darius Miller
I'm not gonna lie to you. I don't. I like, I enjoy watching my kids play you know, they're competing now. I get to yell from the sideline and have fun with the.
Matt Jones
That.
Darius Miller
So maybe you.
Matt Jones
I don't think a lot of people realize this. You have a gym here in Lexington that you have, that you're part of and tell people about that.
Darius Miller
Yeah, yeah, yeah. If anybody's familiar with the Sports center, you know, out by the mall, you know, across from the movie theater, me and a group of partners, we just, you know, took over that space and looking to do some amazing things with basketball. Super excited about it. We feel like we can. Can have a huge impact with the community and give back to the youth. You know what I mean? Just thinking about the guys. First of all, excuse me, we're changing the name to the Alumni center, you know what I mean? And just I was going into a story about, you know, Tony Delk and Scott Padgett and those guys working with me and helping me to develop my game. So similar mentality, you know, with how I'm approaching this gym and trying to get back to the youth, get a lot of the alumni to come. Come back and, you know, pour into the youth and, you know, touch the community a little bit. So we're excited.
Matt Jones
They're doing great things with that. So follow the now call the Alumni center, right?
Darius Miller
Yeah. Yeah.
Matt Jones
All right. Some questions from the fans here. One person writes, darius had one of the nastiest dunks in UK history. Does he remember throwing down on that guy against Ole Miss?
Darius Miller
Oh, yeah, definitely.
Matt Jones
Yeah, sure.
Darius Miller
For sure. I remember it. Yeah. Me and Cal just got into an argument right before that, you know, so he gassed me up a little bit, and it resulted in that, like you could.
Matt Jones
You could argue with Cal. He was all right with it.
Darius Miller
Oh, he loved it.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I think he did.
Darius Miller
He ate it up. But it got us going, you know what I mean? It got us going, and we. We went out and took it out on the opposing team, so it worked out for all of us.
Matt Jones
Kentucky yell at Cal right after that dunk. I thought you did something right after the dunk to the bench, too. That was kind of out of character for you.
Darius Miller
I wasn't worried about defense or anything.
Matt Jones
I just.
Darius Miller
I had to. I had to express myself to coach Cal.
Matt Jones
One person writes, kentucky versus Arkansas. Who's Darius rooting for?
Darius Miller
I'm rooting for Kentucky. I love Cal. I wish Cal all of this success in the world. I do. But I'm a Kentucky boy.
Matt Jones
There you go. That's the answer.
Darius Miller
I bleed blue. That's. I'm a Kentucky.
Matt Jones
One person writes, ask him what his first thought of you and Drew and KSR were. Didn't he come up kind of as you did? Well, you kind of did. We kind of were on the same thing.
Darius Miller
Yeah. Yeah, that's true. That's true.
Matt Jones
Did you all see us as, like, being annoying? You can say it if you did.
Darius Miller
No, not really. Not at all. Not at all.
Matt Jones
Actually, that group where you were there in 2010 is probably the group that we like, that we kind of vibed with the most. So it was good.
Darius Miller
Yeah. No, I feel like we had a good relationship.
Matt Jones
Yeah, we did. Darius. Thank you very much. Everybody. Give me a round of applause. Darius Miller, UK legend. Whenever I do top players, all that in UK history, people get angry if we don't put you on it, just so you know. We'll take a break and be right back. This is ksr. Welcome back. Tuggy Sports Radio here at Assured Partners. Assured Partners is the broker for personal life insurance, commercial life insurance, employee benefits, good benefits. Keep good people and local office. Right here. Assured Partners. Hayes Featherston and the guys bring us out here. It's been awesome. The food from Drakes, there's still some available. Not much, but a little bit. And then I'm giving away Reds tickets here at the end. It's part of the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, KSR Safe Summer Driving Tour. How good was Darius Miller? I told him after it was over, hey, man, we talk sometimes about who are former players. You can get involved in media. If he wanted to, he can do this. And I'm. I have a high standard. He and Willie are probably the only two players the last 15 years that I would say that about. But he. I think Ryan could do it if he wanted to. You know, just. He's so humble, you know, the guy has every reason to be. Well, he is a superstar. We made a Mount Rushmore of Kentucky kids and played high school basketball. He may be on it for what he's done. So I love the guy. He got a rare second segment on the show a lot of times. Yeah. So he just played It's Raining Men. Who picked that song? That's me. I like when the Weather Girls comes on occasionally.
Darius Miller
The Hallelujahs, I think, hit at the perfect time. I can't help but snap, you know.
Matt Jones
It'S not really my cup of coffee. Tea. I'm happily married. You don't really want me. No, I don't. I don't really need to be rained on by men. But I do love the song.
Darius Miller
There's a good chance.
Matt Jones
High chance for that to happen. I just like the beginning.
Darius Miller
Like, hi. You know, it's just you.
Matt Jones
Like when it says hi. Yeah, just a great intro, great song, but doesn't really fit my lifestyle. I'm not opposed if you're into that lifestyle. Whatever. But it's not really what I do. All right. I mean, listen. It's a good song. I just did country boy. Kids survive. You all did. It's raining men and what was yours, man, I feel like a woman. I just. Who's the liberal here? 8, 5, 9, 2. Well, that's the opposite. 2287. I don't know if people know this before I go to the phones. Did you know that Marge Simpson died?
Darius Miller
No.
Matt Jones
Spoiler alert. I hope everybody's forgot to have an extra bit in the season finale of the Simpsons. Apparently, they killed off Marge Simpson. Now they've left it open. I'm sure they're not gonna have her gone forever. But the end is like, Marge Simpson is dead. And it's the cliffhanger for the next season. Did Marge Simpson really die? Can you believe that after 36 years of being the same age, she would be dead? No, she aged gracefully. But, you know, they killed Kenny in every episode of south park, and he survived somehow the next. Yeah, but that's their whole gimmick.
Darius Miller
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I mean, what if Marge Simpson is dead? I feel like she's not getting enough play. I mean, we. We talk about when people die. I feel like Marge Simpson deserves her. If she's going to be dead, Homer's going to be a widow now. I know, but Homer could be dating now on Tinder. Could you imagine that? Actually like that. Ace Bailey has yet to report to Utah, and Utah says they have not talked to him since they drafted him. Seems like it's going well outside of my guy Yang Hansen that was in the crowd and will now be Andrew Carr, summer league teammate. That's right. The Ace Bailey is my favorite thing. I love that he said, utah, I'm not going. Don't pick me. And Danny Ainse said, you know what? I don't care. I'm picking you anyway. But because we're not going to let you run. They had a press conference scheduled today to introduce the rookies to the media. Walter Clayton Jr. Who also was picked. He's there. Ace Bailey not there. He says basic. They. They talk to him and he says, I just been doing some things. Been doing some things. Not interviews. They've been doing some things.
Darius Miller
Been picking out.
Matt Jones
Awful. Has apparently They've called him and he doesn't pick up. Utah Jazz. Sorry, we'll send that one to voicemail. How is this going to work out, though? How are they going to co. I think this is going to be. This is interesting. The last person to do this, I think, was Steve Francis. You remember he got picked by Vancouver, and he basically force them to trade him to Houston. Danny A. Said, I ain't trading him. If he wants to do something else, we'll still have his rights. Does he not realize he's tanking his own brand? Like, other teams aren't going to want to deal with this? Fans aren't going to love him. As we were driving home from the place in Shepherdsville where they do. Where we did the KS Bar stuff, I was listening to Jeff Teague's podcast, which, by the way, I highly recommend, unless you have children around and then do not listen to even one second of it. But Jeff Teague is entertaining, and they were going through the draft. And Jeff Teague's point was, ryan, dude, you're playing basketball. Chef Teague was like, you're already a little shaky as a character. Go to Utah. There ain't gonna be anything for you to do. It'll keep you from getting in trouble. It'll make sure you play basketball. And he said, they can't get any. He was interesting. He was like, they cannot get any superstars, so if you're just decent, they'll max you out because they're not going to be able to sign any free agents. He's like, I'd rather go to Utah than almost anywh. You're a celebrity there, no distractions, and it keeps you from. You can get a superstar contract even if you're not great. I thought it was a good case. I wonder, you know, even if they come to terms and he joins the team, how can you go in that locker room when everybody at locker room heard you say, I don't want to play here. I don't want to play with these guys? They got to go in the locker room, be their teammates. Not off to a good start. Bailey. I think. I think it's fair to say I have a high opinion of himself for a guy who couldn't even take his team to the NCAA tournament. That's right. And then finally, after our conversation yesterday, I have been inundated with people telling me they've had hand, foot, mouth disease. Wow, you've had it. Literally. Now, granted, I understand not having kids that I didn't. I cannot believe how many People have had hand, foot and mouth. I'm not gonna ask y' all to all raise your hands. I don't want to put you on the spot. He volunteered for everybody, but I am amazed at the prevalence of hand, foot and mouth disease. And everybody says, was it awful? Everybody says it is absolutely awful. So now I went from kind of making fun of Connor Joe to drew. I kind of feel bad for Connor Joe in his hand, feet and mouth. You need to be donated into some Connor Joe causes here. Get him feeling better. I had heard of it. I still think it was ridiculous. They put on that graphic with the reds and my two friends that have had it, like everyone else just said it was the absolute worst. And as we've heard, getting it through daycare seems to be the way it gets to you. I did have somebody say to me, matt, be careful, because oftentimes one of the ways it gets passes at petting zoos. But that's the good thing. We were around animals yesterday. But I don't pet them. Right. So that's exact. So that's partially why. Yeah, but you, you were shaking hands with people who were petting them. Good point. But hopefully. But I'm sure there, they keep them all clean and so I'm not worried about it. Well, you said it yesterday. Now every time we hear that name, Connor Joe, what's the first thing we're going to think? Oh, I'll think of it. I'm. When he comes up, I will call him hand, foot and mouth, make a sign and hold it behind a whole plate. Well, he was the most anonymous player on the team, so he actually should use it. No, he's not. Now you're saying it's good for his brand.
Darius Miller
Now we know who he is.
Matt Jones
That's true. It's very like if you get like syphilis. I don't know if you want to be the syphilis guy than a nobody. Well, I, I kind of agree with you. It's the same theory with the motivated Mark Stoops. You might as well lean into it. That's right. You know, so it hadn't affected Shannon too bad. If you were good, if you were. If you were going to learn anything from our president. He does that like he gets arrested, has a mug shot, and then he sells it on T shirts and everybody gets over it. Like, I think that that's, that's part of what you do. Who's up next? Mark. Mark. Go ahead, Mark. Hey, guys. Yeah, I just, I'm so excited to hear Darius on There. I love that guy.
Darius Miller
I think he's definitely one of my.
Matt Jones
Favorite all time UK basketball players. We were neighbors for a short time a while back.
Darius Miller
But I did want to add one thing to what Ryan said. Ryan said he believes that he's one.
Matt Jones
Of maybe three players that have won.
Darius Miller
A state title as well as national championship. I think can add to that.
Matt Jones
I believe he's the only one who did those as well as won Kentucky. Mr. Basketball. So when you talk about Mount Rushmore, that's pretty amazing players. He's definitely got to be on it.
Darius Miller
He might even be the one.
Matt Jones
If there's one Mount Rushmore with one player on it, I don't think that's interesting. Yeah, I didn't realize that. So. Yeah. So Darius, did you know that, Darius, that you're the only player to win a state championship, a national championship in Kentucky and be Mr. Basketball ever? Did you know that? All right, so give him a round of applause. There he is. Yeah, one of one. He didn't even know that. So, sir, I hope you're telling me the truth. I appreciate the call because it's gonna ruin. If you are lying, then that's gonna be very, very, very mean. It's kind of like the, the stat I said about Anthony Davis. The win a college title, be national player of the year, win an NBA title, win an Olympic gold medal. It's like Bill, Walt Disney, Magic Johnson and him. Like, it's only like a. It's all. It's only like three people that have done it over the years. You know, to hear him talk. His first year with Billy, he had him, Patrick Patterson and Jody Meeks. That team didn't make the tournament. That tells you right there that something was wrong. But he also, I did think it was good that he said that. You know, it's been many years. We can say Billy had some positives to him. He was not, he was a troubled guy, but he wasn't Drew all bad like most people in the world. They're not all bad, not all good. He had some positive. And guys I think know that. Yeah, we've heard other players that are on those teams speak highly of them too. I mean, they committed to play for the guy. No, it didn't go perfectly, but they, they had good moments. I loved when Darius was on here, how delicate he was handling the questions. Like when you said, did they lock.
Darius Miller
Josh in the bathroom?
Matt Jones
It's like, well, Josh was in the bathroom. They didn't physically lock it. He was kind of doing gently. He gently confirmed A lot of what we had heard he was kind of doing. He was being nice about it. Tell me about Stockton Morgan, Stockton Mortgage. I referred them to a buyer yesterday. But I don't think you understood the game. The game was what songs are least like you. I could see you singing this song. Oh, I thought you.
Darius Miller
Yeah.
Matt Jones
He says, yeah, I'm a hell of a man. I don't think I am a hell of man. He says, I think I'm good looking. I don't think I am. You're saying you're humble is what you're saying. He's saying. You're saying. Cuz he's saying. He's saying that he's perfect. He's saying he's being. You think you aren't perfect? You. You. Not at all. So you think you are humble? Humble and not perfect and not handsome. Yes, I agree with all that.
Darius Miller
Makes me sad.
Matt Jones
You're handsome. I think you don't believe you're handsome. I am not. And I don't think you believe you're perfect. I have definitely not. But I also wouldn't say you're humble. You have very high, like, belief in yourself. I mean, look at Me? Do I look like I got a high belief in myself? I got a hole in my shoe, for crying out loud. Yeah, you do. All right, fair enough. You can see his sock through his top of his shoe. He can? Yeah. You can? Yeah. Have you thought about replacing those? Well, first of all, you have lit. You have little beefy. I got little baby feet. Can't fit into match shoes. What size do you wear? Probably eight and a half or a nine probably. Clearly you don't wear eight and a half because your toes sticking through the top of it. So that's why this song is perfect for the anti rhymes. You know what? It is perfect. I'll take it back. I take it back. 859-280-2287. You are so ridiculous. All right, so let's do our draft Kings pick of the week. I'll just pick the game. I'm giving tickets away, too, at the end of the show. Padres and Reds tonight. Who's pitching for the Reds? They're gonna pitch Nick Martinez. So they're vulnerable tonight against Dylan Cease. Who I don't know. These two teams are. Are going for the wild card in Cincinnati. Who you got? Padres by four. By four?
Darius Miller
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Okay. All right. Go to DraftKings. Bet five with $150. Pick them by four. You can probably get a good odds on that. What about you? Padres by six. Six. I bet you could get even better odds on that. All right, what about. We know the Reds can't have it too good. And they've been on. They've been hot. Just played the Yankees. Well, they got to come down. I say Padres by one. Yeah. So they pitch. They get Abbott and lodolo in game two and three. So I think those are better. Better. This is the one to lose. I would think so. I actually will take Padres by sweep by two. I think this is just not their night. And the Padres are favorite, so I think that's probably. We're talking baseball. Can I mention one thing? The legends have a dude who have hit a home run in eight straight games. It's like the Atlanta league record. Really? Yeah. Dylan Rock has a home run now in eight straight games. Do they play home this weekend? No, they're out of town this weekend. Eight straight games. If you get a chance. If you haven't seen it, everyone is mocking on the Internet. You know, this weekend is the big Jeff Bezos wedding, considered to be arguably the most expensive wedding outside of the royal wedding in the history of humankind. They basically shut down the city of Venice for this wedding. Stopped all boats into the city. Have rented a ton of planes in Italy to keep people. So maybe the most expensive wedding ever. Apparently. It's like the ceremony's crazy, all this stuff. But the Internet is making fun of. Have you seen their invitations?
Darius Miller
No, I didn't get one.
Matt Jones
Pull it up on your phone at some point. Look up at Jeff Bezos for a wedding that is the most expensive wedding at all time. It looks like they made it on Microsoft paint. It's literally. It's the kind of invitation I would give you to say, hey, we're having a special at KS Bar on Saturday during the game. Name of all the things they put money into the Internet is like, these are the worst invitations ever. So if you women especially I think you're gonna, like, think it's absurd. Look, she's laughing right here. Aren't they awful? That's an awful invitation for a wedding where they're spending that. There it is right there. I like on there. It says, please no gifts. You wasted your ink. I'm not bringing you a gift, Jeff Bezos. You don't need a gift. So will the wedding be on Amazon Prime? Can we watch it, like over the weekend? I would say to Mario, if Mario made that graphic promoting a remote, I would tell him to do it again. Like, that's. That's how bad he's looking. Like it's a criticism. No, I'm not talking about you. I'm just saying that is how bad that is. Mario looks. It's so bad that even you could do better. But to think of every detail, like renting boats and keeping planes on the ground. They're basically closing shops. How do you overlook the invitation? They. I don't think people are realizing it. They are shutting down the city of Venice during jubilee. A once every 25 years Catholic celebration on a Saturday in the summer. I can't even imagine how much that would cost to be an astronaut. You get special treatment. Unbelievable. I would just send out a group text for an invitation. Just donate to charity. Good grief. Who's next? Brent. I know he does, but still. Go ahead. Hey, Matt. Hey, man.
Darius Miller
A while back we had a con. You guys had a conversation about retiring Jersey. And if we're not going to retire during this, then I don't know who.
Matt Jones
We'Re going to retire. Well, I mean, there's. Listen, if you were ever going to make, and I appreciate the call, like a special exceptions argument to. I mean, like the modern equivalent of when we retired the 92 guys jerseys might be a Darius Miller. I mean, I still. They got to do Anthony Davis and John Wall. That. That's the next two. And then you still have Tayshon and Bogan. So I think are two more. I mean, I think those are four that have to get done at some point whenever we start doing that again. But then I think you go to that next group, then there's an argument for, like, a special exception. Darius Miller. I think Darius should be there. At the rate they're going, they're on pace to do that in about 500 years. That's my biggest complaint with UK. That's their blind spot. I know it doesn't really matter, but it's been so long since they've retired.
Darius Miller
A.
Matt Jones
We have a huge list of basketball numbers that should already be up there. Tayshawn. I mean, Tayshawn's the next one. Yeah. And why wouldn't you just do Tayshawn wouldn't. I mean, who would not love to have Tayshawn back in Rupp arena next year for a Jersey retirement? I mean, that would be awesome. He is. First of all, you're getting close to 25 years since he played here. I mean, how much longer are you going to wait? Then next year do Bogans and then do all and then do Davis? Because those four are uncontroversial. Right, right. No one's going to say those four shouldn't be done. They should be done. We should do be doing one a year for the next four years. Yeah. With you guys, I think it's one of the coolest things Kentucky does, but why don't they do it more often? I just don't understand why they have to wait. Tony Dilk, I think, was the last one. And that was what, two years ago? Tony Delk played 30 years ago. Like, let's go ahead and get. I mean, who's going to argue with Tayshot? Does anybody believe Tayshawn shouldn't be on there? Kick him out of the building if they do. Yeah. So bring him in. His arms are so long he can touch the roof when he does the wide. Let's go ahead and do it. Who's next? Matt. Matt, Go ahead, Matt. Hey, Matt, quick question. Just wanted to know when the trivia final was going to be and then also wanted to know about the Cassidy row situation. We hadn't heard about that in a while. I like coach Brooks, but it seems like the roster is not complete, so just wanted to hear some sort of. Well, okay, so first of all, on the trivia thing, we're going to do it as part of our opening. So we're going to make one of our soft openings, the trivia fun. So it's going to end up being probably second or third week of August. So it'll be, we'll do it as one of our soft openings. So actually the people in the trivia finals will see the new restaurant before other people are. So I will let you know the date. But that's, that's the current plan. Cassidy Rose situation I haven't heard anything else about. Do we know where she's, she's not going to school anywhere else, right? She's going to go to school. Here's what I would say about it. And again, I was, I was out when this was all going on. And so my, I didn't have strong opinions. The same people that kind of got on Ryan when he said yesterday he wouldn't cut his son are a lot of the same people that had a strong opinion about cutting Cassidy Row essentially. And those are inconsistent opinions. Right? I mean there, I think there is more to that situation than the general public knows. And I tend to defer to the coach in those situations. So I'm not, I'm not, I'm not taking a strong view. I wasn't there. But I think, you know, I think Kenny Brooks deserves in year two some, some grace on it and he's been loading up on players too. We have an unbelievable roster. I mean next year will be good, but then starting the next year dude is going to, is loading up at Kentucky. Thank you all very much here at Assured Partners for having us and thanks everybody all week. Check out the interrupted by Matt Jones and have a great weekend. We'll see you Monday. The episode kicks off with Matt Jones welcoming listeners back to the Kentucky Sports Radio (KSR) Hour. The hosts introduce their special guest, Darius Miller, a celebrated former basketball player from the University of Kentucky. The atmosphere is friendly and upbeat, setting the stage for an engaging conversation about Darius's illustrious career and experiences.
Matt Jones: "From growing up in Mason County to playing for the University of Kentucky and advancing to the NBA, how blessed are you?"
Darius Miller: "Extremely blessed... I've been fortunate to play on some great teams, with great coaches, and in great situations. I don't take that for granted."
Darius reflects on his journey, expressing gratitude for the opportunities and mentorship he received. He highlights the importance of team chemistry and the supportive environment that led him to commit to the University of Kentucky.
Discussion Highlights:
Billy G. Era: Darius discusses his time under Coach Billy Giles (Billy G.), emphasizing Billy's knowledge of the game and the physically demanding drills that shaped the team's resilience.
Darius Miller: "Billy G. was a good coach. His delivery was off a little bit, which is important when dealing with 17, 18-year-old boys."
Transition to John Caliperi: The arrival of Coach John Caliperi brought significant changes, including a new system and a fresh batch of talent. Darius notes the adjustment period but underscores the collective decision to stay for the team's improvement.
Darius Miller: "A lot changed... different system, different personality, different batch of talent. But we felt it was the best situation to get better."
Impact of Star Players: Darius shares his first impressions of playing alongside John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins, highlighting their competitiveness and aspiration to win championships.
Darius Miller: "They were so hungry, man. They wanted to win a championship... they wanted to be hall of famers."
2011 Season Highlights:
Brandon Knight’s Contributions: Darius praises Brandon Knight as one of the most underrated players, acknowledging his hard work and pivotal moments in the tournament.
Darius Miller: "He has some really big moments. He pushed us pretty far in the tournament."
2012 National Championship: Reflecting on the championship season, Darius commends Anthony Davis and the team's quick chemistry under Coach Caliperi.
Darius Miller: "Anthony Davis was a freak... it was probably the best season in UK basketball history."
Notable Quote:
Darius Miller [11:10]: "We were totally bought into winning the championship."
Darius contrasts the coaching styles of Billy G., John Caliperi, and Mark Pope, emphasizing how each coach's approach influenced the team's dynamics and performance.
Billy G.: Focused on physical conditioning and outworking other teams.
