It's a travel day for Matt. Drew is on vacation in Denver and then Shannon. The dude's down sunning his buns in Florida somewhere. Billy. So I think we should maybe try to call him before the show is over. Just see what the heck he's up to.
Billy R.
Well, he's got enough vacation days, you know he's going to use them. They don't roll over.
Ryan Lemon
So it's kind of a bullpen day. We thought we'd bring in a different special guest every 30 minutes. Kind of keep the show moving to different stuff. We had Sean woods and Cisco Bryant in the first hour. We start the second hour with NFL Denver Bronco. I still know you as Little Devin. You're Little Devin Key to me. Member of the Denver Broncos. Devin Key, we had you on last year at about this time before you went to camp. Ended up with a great year last year. Man. Where's your head at right now?
Devin Key
I feel good, just same as last year, you know, clear headed, feel good body wise and everything. So looking forward to this year again.
Ryan Lemon
You got on the field a lot.
Devin Key
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Played a lot of special teams and got on the field on defense a lot. You know, you had to, you had to earn your stripes and you did it.
Devin Key
I feel like I just made good relationships with the coaches. Just had to earn their trust and I feel like I earned it midway through camp and I could kind of see it a little bit. And just through the season they could always call on me and I was.
Ryan Lemon
You know, you're kind of like the utility guy. We need you on this special team. Go here. We need you on this special team. We need you in the defense to do that. We need you over here to do that.
Devin Key
Anywhere that they need me, I feel like I can, you know, go do it. Feel like that's another reason why they've instilled their trust in me.
Ryan Lemon
You just got back from OTAS not long ago. How did everything go?
Devin Key
Yeah, everything was good. We do it a little different. Coach Payton, you know, he's big on the, you know, conditioning and weightlifting. So we did that a little bit longer than, you know, most other teams and then got our OTA practices in. And, I mean, they were good. I feel really good about this team this year. Everybody looks ready to go and more confident than ever.
Ryan Lemon
We talked about this when you were here last summer. Lexington doesn't produce a lot of NFL football players. We just don't now. University of Kentucky does. Yeah, but Lexington doesn't. And right now, with you and Jedrick Wills and Landon Young, we got three guys that kind of grew up together, playing together all in the NFL. And Lucky Jackson forgot about him. I mean, that's kind of cool.
Devin Key
It's super cool. Just, you know, because we were all friends coming out of high school, too. Like, growing up, we played against each other in middle school, high school, and just kind of stay connected in a way don't, you know, talk to each other every day, but it's one. You see them in town or actually, you see them on the game field, and, you know, it's always a what's up? Like, because we're from the same place.
Ryan Lemon
Do you, like, is there. You still have, like, pinch me moments to think that when you look in the locker room or. And you're in a game and you're like, man, I'm.
Devin Key
I'm in the NFL every once in a while. I was telling, you know, a few friends maybe last month or a couple weeks ago, and I was just like, you know, I don't think it's really hitting me yet. I'm just kind of living in it right now. And then I feel like after the fact, it's gonna be like, all right, like, I was actually there, like, but I've been enjoying my time so far.
Ryan Lemon
So this will be your fourth year?
Devin Key
Fifth.
Ryan Lemon
This will be your fifth year?
Devin Key
Going into my fifth year, yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. You had two with the Chiefs. Yeah.
Devin Key
And then the rest has been with the Denver Broncos.
Ryan Lemon
See, like I said a bit earlier, I still see you as little Devin Key, the guy that Corey Price just posted a picture of winning the Fastest Kid in Town race when you're 11 years old.
Devin Key
I was going to say, I don't know where he got that picture from. I wonder if my mom even has that.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, that's pretty cool. But, you know, it happened so fast. It seemed like, you know, you left Bryant Station, went to Western Kentucky. Happened so fast. Next thing we know, we're watching you.
Devin Key
Play in the NFL right I remember, I mean, just on draft day, obviously, like you guys were over there and then it got to the end of the draft and you know, it was that process of where it was like everybody's name called and my nigga get called and then went on a draft. But it still was a great day to just to have the people closest to me around, you know, for that moment.
Ryan Lemon
So where do you see yourself with the Broncos this year?
Devin Key
I feel like, I feel good, same as last year. See myself, you know, playing on special teams, you know, being in there on defense whenever asked upon, you know, Matt.
Ryan Lemon
Marsh was the principal at Sandersville elementary and now it's. I'm drawing a blank on his name right now. Oh, he's gonna kill me. I can see his face again. Knoblin.
Devin Key
Oh, yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Is the principal now. I've told both of them said, you know, Sandersville Elementary School has produced an NFL player.
Devin Key
I was the first, I guess you would say graduating. You were fifth grade. Fifth.
Ryan Lemon
You were the first fifth grade class in the new school. So they have produced an NFL player at Sanderville Elementary School. So I think that's pretty cool.
Devin Key
That is cool.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. Brian Station is, you know, they've had Keel Sanford, Cornell Burbage, Frank Le, Master Dermani.
Devin Key
That's what I'm saying, you know, so had a few come through there.
Ryan Lemon
Brian Station has produced a good level of NFL talent as well.
Devin Key
Athletes for sure don't get enough love, but we're over there.
Ryan Lemon
Well, that's what I was going to say. They why Brian Station should embrace that. These kids that are at Brian Station now need to know, dude, they were here. They were in this locker room. They made it to the NFL. Why don't they do something a little more over there?
Devin Key
I don't know. I think I put that on me a little bit too. I don't go over as much, so maybe that's something I got to do.
Ryan Lemon
I think your dad told me they do have something in the weight room or the locker room with you guys.
Devin Key
Yeah. Former players. Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
That made it to the NFL and everything.
Devin Key
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
So I do have to say this. You look a lot different. You finally cut all your hair.
Devin Key
I did.
Ryan Lemon
When's the last time you had a haircut?
Devin Key
It's probably like my sophomore year high school.
Ryan Lemon
So you haven't had a haircut since your sophomore year of high school? Billy. He had Troy Palomalo hair.
Devin Key
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
So you didn't have a. Your entire five year career at Western Kentucky long hair. You never had a haircut?
Devin Key
Never.
Ryan Lemon
And then you just got it cut. Just not long. Not that long ago.
Devin Key
Yeah, I was tired of it. Looking for something new.
Ryan Lemon
What did they do? Did they take it and do something with all that hair?
Devin Key
I just. He cut it off, dropped on the floor. They swept it up, and there it went in the trash.
Ryan Lemon
You know, Billy, our producer here, he's a Western Kentucky Hilltopper.
Devin Key
Yeah, yeah.
Ryan Lemon
When you were playing there, Billy?
Billy R.
Oh, yeah, of course. A great player.
Ryan Lemon
Were you working in the media when he was playing over there?
Billy R.
What years were you there, Devin?
Devin Key
My first year was 2016, and then last year, 2020.
Billy R.
So, yeah, I was there 13 to 17. So I was getting banned from the football premises. Right, you were there.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, they banned him because he was a little critical. You were critical of the head coach, Billy, is that right?
Billy R.
You know, they. I think. Were you a Sanford recruit, Devin, or.
Devin Key
No, I was a Brahm recruit.
Billy R.
Brahm.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Billy R.
That's when the. Things were. Things were, well there. And then Sanford took over, tell people. But they didn't like, squeak wheel gets the oil, you know, I don't know.
Devin Key
If you guys know, but Sanford is a. He works media out there in Denver now. So it was last year during camp. He had, you know, he was doing interviews and then feel somebody come up behind me and kind of grab my shirt. I'm like, all right, who is this? And then I turn around as him.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, wait.
Devin Key
I think that was the first time I saw him since Western. Yeah. So it's crazy.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. Coach Braum recruited you, but you never got to play for him, right?
Devin Key
No. So I got. So he was still there my freshman year.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, he was there.
Devin Key
Yeah. So my first season where I red shirted, he was the coach there.
Ryan Lemon
Okay.
Devin Key
After the season, that's when he left to go to Purdue.
Ryan Lemon
And then you played for Sanford the rest of your career?
Devin Key
Two years. And then Tyson Hilton.
Ryan Lemon
Tyson Hilton. That's right. That's crazy. Sanford's now with the Denver Broncos. You're with the Denver Broncos up there. So what. What do you remember the most about your career at Western Kentucky? You got to play in a couple bowl games.
Devin Key
Got to play a few bowl games. We only won one bowl game, though, while I was playing. But probably just, you know, the small community of Bowling Green. It was always nice, you know, being there. Wasn't nothing too big, but you had a lot of food, places, which I love to love to enjoy. It's where me and my wife had our first kid, like, so there's a lot of memories there. Yeah. Just Just the brotherhood that I made with a few players that, you know, we still stay in contact.
Ryan Lemon
Today I got to tell this story. I can't remember if I told it last year or not. So you registered your freshman year at Western, your first college football game where you're in uniform.
Devin Key
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
You don't tell your parents you're going to start at safety. They did not know until the defense walked on the field and saw you in the backfield. You never told them you were going to start at safety?
Devin Key
Well, I got another story that kind of relates to that. Yeah, when I first got my first start in the NFL, I didn't tell him either.
Ryan Lemon
You didn't even tell them you were gonna start in the NFL? Were they there that day?
Devin Key
Yeah, they were there. Uh huh. So I just kind of made it like a big surprise. I knew both of them were coming out, so I was like, you know, I'm not even gonna tell them. I'm just, you know, first play the game, just be out there, just run out there.
Ryan Lemon
Well, Dante, he said when you walked out at Western Kentucky, he goes, what's he doing out there? You know, it's like, thought you'd made a mistake. What's he. What's going. What's he doing out there? And you started. And I know when he saw you started in the NFL, he probably started know your dad's a big baby anyway. Probably crying like a big baby over there. So.
Devin Key
Yeah, same story. And then after the game, like, they over, just joking around like, why did you do that again?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, you had some great moments in the NFL last year. What was your. Thank you. The one I know you tackled Baker Mayfield one time. I got that great picture of you doing that.
Devin Key
Got a sack on. Hell's my first sack of the NFL. Kind of fell into it in a way, you know, you know, taking my drop in coverage. And then I have anything. And then he got out of the pocket when I made a tackle. So that was my first one. But yeah, it's probably most memorable is probably when I got another start at home. And it was the defensive introductions. So my first start was it was the offensive introduction, so I didn't get to run out like by myself. And while they like, yeah, my name and stuff on the jumbotron. So I was like, dang, like, I wish I would have had that moment. And then one of our safeties got hurt the week before. So the next week they're like, all right, Deb, you're gonna start again. And it was the defensive introductions. And I was like, yes. Like I have that moment where I can run out and it's just like me and the crowds like yelling everything. I feel like that was like super cool.
Ryan Lemon
So you did have a pitch me moment. That was a good.
Devin Key
I guess. Yeah. That was one smoke going up in the air.

Billy R.
And you tasted the new food the other day. How was that?
Ryan Lemon
It was really good. We got some really good things we're gonna add to the menu. We can't talk about the top secret, so. Joining us for another segment is Devin key member of the Denver Broncos. You and I, we just told one of maybe the best Devin Key story I know. Can I tell the story about the Cancun story?
Devin Key
Might as well. It's been many years ago so we.
Ryan Lemon
Vacationed with your family and my family. We all vacationed down in Cancun together. And it came the the morning where we had to leave and we had to catch the shuttle to the airport at like it's like five. Five in the morning?
Devin Key
Yeah, it was super early.
Ryan Lemon
So we're all got up, we all pack our stuff when we're all meeting down in the lobby and we look around and we're missing somebody. There's no Devin and there's no Mason Alstat. They are nowhere to be found. They have not come home. And we're in the lobby and we're trying to call you and the cell service down there obviously is horrible. Couldn't call you. So we're just about to get on the shuttle to go to the airport. Here comes Devin Key walking through the lobby. Hey, what's up?
Devin Key
How you doing?
Ryan Lemon
It's five o' clock in the morning and you were just walking in. I thought your mom was going to kill you at that moment.
Devin Key
Yeah, I definitely saw red in her eyes for sure. It was one of those or you had the wristband to get into all the little bars in the area downtown Cancun and take advantage of it. Yeah, it was our last night. We were 18. We were just like, you know what? Like we were the knuckleheads of, you know, just down there being a tourist and then being a tourist. Oh man, like yo dude, we gotta get back. And so then we finally caught like it was like one of the buses of advance to take us back. And we, I mean, we made it. So.
Ryan Lemon
I don't know how you pulled it off. You guys ran up to your room, threw your stuff in your suitcase and made it in time for the shuttle to take us to the airport.
Devin Key
I don't know how planned it was, but I mean, yeah, we had our suitcases ready. It's like we packed before we even went out. So we were like, we were good to go no matter what time we get back.
Ryan Lemon
All right, we gotta talk about little brother.
Devin Key
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Had three years here at Kentucky.
Devin Key
Yep.
Ryan Lemon
Decides after this past season, he's gonna pack up, go to Nebraska.
Devin Key
Right.
Ryan Lemon
I know he talked to you a lot throughout the process. What was your advice you gave him and how did that conversation. How do those, how did those conversations go?
Devin Key
I just felt like, you know, as his older brother, I just had to keep it real with them, give them, you know, the best advice. You know, I, I've been through it. Obviously not transferring, but, you know, just going through college. And I just told him, like, hey, like, this is your last year. You know, you gotta do what's best for you. You gotta, you know, you want to go out there, put your best foot forward, you know, put the best film out there. That way you can, you know, set yourself up for the next level. And that decision was to go somewhere else, just change the scenery. He still, you know, owes everything in the UK because that's where he went at first, has spent three years and loved it here. I just feel like it was time for him to go and he felt the same way, obviously, but I mean, he's. He had three different quarterbacks every year that he was there. Yeah, he had three different offense coordinators, so it was, you know, it was just the ups and downs of it. And now I feel like he's in a good position. He's getting coached by an ex NFL coach. And a couple guys that I've played with have told me a lot about the offensive coordinator. Obviously the receiver coach is there now. That was here last year. So he just had a great connection with them. And I guess that's the ultimate reason why he decided to choose Nebraska.
Ryan Lemon
I think you hit on the two things. I think he made a difference. The quarterback in Nebraska and the coaches at Nebraska.
Devin Key
Right.
Ryan Lemon
I think that was the biggest difference maker, don't you?
Devin Key
I think so too, yeah. A quarterback that's, you know, he was a five star, I'm pretty sure, coming out of high school. And, you know, he's got a great arm from What I've seen and seems like he's looking to make the next step in his career as well. So it's going to be good for him.
Ryan Lemon
I know he's going to wear Nebraska this year, but I know your heart and his heart are still here at Kentucky. Your dad played here?
Devin Key
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Drug you guys to games from time you were little.
Devin Key
I mean, my dad had season tickets for August until probably we got to like middle school or high school and yeah, we would always come to the games and you know, tailgate and I mean, growing up, I mean this is where I wanted to go. But you know, obviously things worked out differently for me for the best, fortunately. So. Yeah, I mean, I still live here in Lexington, so I mean, that's true. Tells you how much that the city.
Ryan Lemon
Means to me and I bet you anything he'll end up living back down here in Lex.
Devin Key
I mean there's no doubt. Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Playing days over as well. We got to give him a shout out though.
Devin Key
Not for sure. It is his birthday today, so y' all flood his Twitter and Instagram with birthday wishes. He's making the most of his birthday right now. He's down there in Jamaica.
Ryan Lemon
What a tough life.
Devin Key
Yeah, it's. It's hard for him out there down.
Ryan Lemon
In Jamaica to celebrate his birthday. Yeah, he posted a picture of him and Jaden last night. They had on like cute little matches outfit. What is that about?
Devin Key
Hey, it must be the new generation, huh?
Ryan Lemon
Matching outfits down there. So happy birthday to little Dane.
Devin Key
No, for sure.
Ryan Lemon
All right, I got a message here on the a vision glass text machine. Ask Devin if he's going to allow Dane to moss him when he makes it to the big leagues.
Devin Key
No, I can't allow that to happen. I've. I've talked to a lot of people about, you know, what happens if you guys play each other or this and that. You're gonna say, I got treatment like any other player if he comes across the middle, you know, I got. If I got to make a tackle, I'm gonna tackle him just like anybody else.
Ryan Lemon
And then you get up and talk smack to him.
Devin Key
I talk a little bit of smack like hey, welcome to the league.
Ryan Lemon
Because you guys are a spaced out age enough. You never really played together.
Devin Key
Oh, never. You know, it was.
Ryan Lemon
Sure didn't play against each other.
Devin Key
Yeah, we're six years apart, so it's. We never got the chance. So I got to keep, keep my foot in the league and yeah. Play either play against each other next year or play with each other, who knows?
Ryan Lemon
Well, you know, I think I told you I had this dream where you guys both were with the New Orleans. I think you were with the New Orleans Saints and Dane was with lsu. Like, you guys were in the same town maybe that little.
Devin Key
Oh, I think so, yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Ended up being the same town or something like that. But, yeah, if he comes across the middle, you're out there at safety. You got a job to do.
Devin Key
Yeah, I got a job, little brother.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, I got a job to do.
Devin Key
I don't want any money coming out of my pocket. So it's gonna be. It's gonna be legal. But, yeah, he's definitely gonna maybe think twice about doing it again.
Ryan Lemon
You know, your Broncos kind of created a little buzz in the NFL last year. You know, I think they kind of surprised some people with how well you guys played with the new rookie quarterback and everything, so.
Devin Key
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think he's gonna make that next jump in year two. Defense is still looking good. I mean, we finished in the top five last year and, yeah, that was the first time that the Broncos been to the. To the playoffs since they made the super bowl back in 2015. So, I mean, that was super great to be a part of and looking to, you know, take that next step and make the playoffs and then make a push towards the Super Bowl.
Ryan Lemon
You get a little playoff bonus when you make the playoffs.
Devin Key
Yeah, that never hurts. I was. I was freezing up there in Buffalo, but, I mean, it was nice.
Ryan Lemon
Now, you were telling me last night we met, by the way, your dad had his retirement dinner last night. Dante retired? You guys. I didn't realize. You guys. The Broncos are playing in London this year.
Devin Key
We are. Week six, after we. Pretty sure it's. After we leave Philly, we go overseas to London to play the jets, which would be a super cool experience just playing overseas. It'll be my first time going to London, so. Gonna be super cool just to play in the atmosphere amongst, you know, fans that are, you know, kind of new to the sport. They'll probably show up wearing all types of jerseys from every different team, but it'll be super cool.
Ryan Lemon
Who do you play in there? The jets playing the jets there. Yeah, they'll probably be split. They'll be jets fans and Broncos fans just because people in London don't know who to true for.
Devin Key
You'll see the Steelers jerseys, Vikings jerseys, Jaguars jerseys. Who knows?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. And you're going to take your whole family.
Devin Key
Yeah, we're going to try to get them all out there.
Ryan Lemon
I mean, what a great experience. I Mean, that's another thing of the NFL. You know, you guys, you're still Devon key. You still enjoy going to London, right? And they're going to let you do some touristy stuff when you're out there, right?
Devin Key
Yeah, because we'll go out there right after the game on Sunday, so we'll spend a week out there and get to see the, you know, the city and everything.
Ryan Lemon
Speaking of your whole family, you just had another one.
Devin Key
I did, yes. He's. He just turned a year old on June 26th, so. So, I mean, it's been going by super fast. I think it's because of the season. And I look back and I was like, I mean, where is the time going? Yeah, he's walking, running around, really? Just chasing his older brother.
Ryan Lemon
Well, you guys call him Fat Man.
Devin Key
Yeah, Fat man. Fat. Fat. He's a little chunky thing.
Ryan Lemon
He's a chunky little boy. So is he going to be your offensive lineman? Grace is going to be your receiver?
Devin Key
It could be. I don't know how big he'll end up, but, I mean, from right now, like you said, it looks like a little office alignment.
Ryan Lemon
Well, listen, man, best of luck to you. You know, I'm super proud of you. Love watching you play. I've loved what you play since you were in middle school.
Devin Key
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
At ltms right down the road down there. So hang in there. Best of luck to you, and I can't wait to see you play this year and improve on what you've been doing.
Devin Key
For sure. Thanks for having me, Devin.
Ryan Lemon
Key, Denver Broncos. God, it's crazy, man. All these young guys, we watch them grow up. Dane's gonna be in NFL. Ty Bryant.
Devin Key
Oh, yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Cisco's son's gonna be in the NFL. And all these guys from Lexington, you watch them grow up and all of a sudden they're. You're on there on TV playing at the NFL. So it is so cool how bad, Devin?
Devin Key
Oh, yeah, it definitely gets to you. Does it? Yeah, it takes about, like. It takes me about like two to three days to kind of get used to it again. But yeah, the. The air, super dry kind of. It's heavy on your lawns. It's. It's a different experience up there working.
Ryan Lemon
Out, I guess, especially. It probably affects you. Yeah.
Devin Key
Especially other teams that come to play at home.
Ryan Lemon
So I guess that's why they got to come a couple days early to try to get accustomed to it before.
Devin Key
They play you guys, it's Toug.
Ryan Lemon
We got one more special guest coming up. I don't see him yet, but I think he'll be walking up and he is one of my all time favorites, Rob Bromley. Remember, Bromley was doing sports when you were back. So he's retired now. We're going to talk to Rob, Rob Bromley Rapid here in Kentucky Sports rail. We come back. We'll be right back. Ryan and Billy, this is ksr. All right, welcome back. Ryan Lemon here live on the patio at KS Bar and Grill. Our next special guest has showed up. Before we get to him, Billy, we have to talk about today's Bobby Bonilla Day.
Billy R.
It is Bobby Bonilla Day.
H
What a holiday.
Ryan Lemon
He makes another million dollars for not playing right how many years in a row?
Billy R.
He's received this now for 15 years. He's gotten $1.193 million each year to not play for the Mets. That means he's, he's gotten $17 million and he still has 10 years left.
Ryan Lemon
That's incredible. That's unbelievable. Bobby bonilla day till 2035. So happy Bobby Bonita day. And I just saw too, that I guess Shay Gilders Alexander signed some massive mega deal with Oklahoma city, like almost $300 million or something like that.
Billy R.
So four year, 285 million, Ryan.
Ryan Lemon
My goodness. Well, when you're the MVP and you bring a championship to your city, you can kind of, you're in good bargaining position.
Billy R.
Oh, yeah, no doubt.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. All right. Time now to welcome in another honored guest. And I'm so excited about this. I, you know, it. I'm an old guy. But for me to say I grew up watching this guy. Ladies and gentlemen, retired. I am old. Retired WKYT sports anchor Rob Rumley. Man, it's so good to see you. It really is.
H
It's good to see you. It's. It's good to see you. And thanks for whenever you've seen me around or walking someplace, in and out of the UPS store, wherever you.
Ryan Lemon
That's right. We did that one time.
H
You yelled at me and made a point. And let, let me say a couple of things before we get going. Ryan, you're about the only guy who could text me at quarter to nine last night and say, hey, will you give me 30 minutes from 11:30 to noon and get me to drive halfway across town to do it? So you're not the only one. But hey, how do you get stuck doing two hours all by yourself?
Ryan Lemon
Well, how's that happen exactly? This is, it's bullpen day. Matt's having a travel day. Drew and Shannon are on vacation.
Devin Key
So.
Ryan Lemon
So that's why you're here. That's why I call guys like you to come in, help me here a little bit.
H
I heard the little pieces of your. Your previous three.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
And it was very interesting. And. And, you know, one thing that was interesting about it, because, you know, you grew up in Indiana, right? There was an Indianapolis connection with Sean and an Indianapolis connection with Cisco.
Ryan Lemon
Correct.
H
And of course, there's an Indianapolis connection with you having gone to Butler. So, you know, it. Let me. Let me say a couple other things. One of your biggest. One of your biggest fans is my son.
Ryan Lemon
Really? Robbie.
H
Robbie. He. And we're very proud of him. He's working for Bosch, and he's. He's over in Germany for a month now, working.
Ryan Lemon
Is he really?
H
So he can't. Yeah, he can't hear this. Today he's in Straubing, northwest of Munich, working at a. At a. At a plant. Yeah, he. He. He. He told me, you know, he said, I just love Ryan. I just love. He's one of your biggest. One of your biggest fans.
Ryan Lemon
See, I remember Robbie.
H
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
You were at the team Hotel Kentucky at the NCAA tournament. Robbie's one of the little kids out there with a pen and paper, trying to get autographs. That's how I remember Robbie.
H
Yeah, probably. Yeah, maybe at the SEC tournament.
Ryan Lemon
Probably the SEC tournament.
H
In Atlanta. In Atlanta. And there's one other thing I want to say, you know, because we. We talked, spent a few years. Now is in the studio out on Nicholasville Road.
Ryan Lemon
Correct. Last time I think you were on.
H
But it was you and me and Jared Lorenzo.
Ryan Lemon
Was it really, Jared?
H
It was the three of us.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
And I don't know. I don't know whether we did the whole. Well, we did an hour at least. I know. I don't know whether we did, but here we are almost at the anniversary.
Ryan Lemon
That's right.
H
He passed just before the 4th of July.
Ryan Lemon
July 3rd.
H
Was it the 3rd? Yeah, it was just before the 4th.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
What a wonderful guy.
Ryan Lemon
Great guy.
H
Yes.
Ryan Lemon
What a great memory, you remembering that he was in studio the last time you came in to do the show with us.
H
I. You know, you have. You go through your time, Ryan, and I've always been pretty reserved and, you know, frankly, kind of. Kind of shy, but I wish wouldn't. I wish I would have known him better.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. Yeah.
H
I wish I would have known him, you know, half. Half halfway as well as you did.
Ryan Lemon
I hope this makes you feel good. His son Tayden, who was like, I think 10 at the time when he passed has now Division 1 football offers.
H
Oh, wow.
Ryan Lemon
Playing at Fort Thomas Highlands.
H
Is that right?
Ryan Lemon
Yes. As a tight end.
H
Is that right?
Ryan Lemon
Yes. Yeah. So that might make you feel good.
H
That does. That does.
Ryan Lemon
You did utter one of the most famous lines that time when you came in the studio with Jared and me when you did the show. Your famous line that I'll remember the rest of my life. I said, rob, you had such a great, great career.
H
You were.
Ryan Lemon
You were getting ready to retire. So what's one thing you are most proud of, Ryan? I'm most proud of I didn't have to do one second of sports talk radio.
H
Well, you know, I did. I got away with it. I got away with total in radio and TV. I got away with probably a little over 45 years.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
Now, of course, it, you know, in the early years that I was in the business.
Ryan Lemon
When you were in Lima, Ohio.
H
Lima, yeah. And working small market radio as a news and sports director, doing high school games.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
Did it. Did a season of. Which was. You look back on stuff. Did a season of Bowling Green football.
Ryan Lemon
Did you really?
H
And Don Nealon was the coach.
Ryan Lemon
Wow. So.
H
And I'm 23 years old here, you know, and you're doing Bowling Green football. And it was. It was fun. It was interesting. Jack Lambert was Jack Lambert senior year, and Don James was at Kent and Dick Crumb was at Miami. I think Miami went undefeated. They were pretty good. But you never would think, you know, here's Don Nealon and he's going to be in the college football. He's going to be top 20 all time.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, yes.
H
Eventually they ran him out of Bowling Green. He went up to Michigan and was Schembachler's quarterback coach and then landed at West Virginia. But those are the things early in life when you're 23 years old. What's. What does it lead to? And it's just. But as a great memory from 1973 and working in Ohio, I couldn't have been in Ohio four and a half better years.
Ryan Lemon
My earliest memories, my first introduction to Rob Romley was the tape delayed broadcast of the UK games.
H
Yeah. That was.
Ryan Lemon
I think that's how people in Lexington knew you from the local news. But for the rest of the state, we got to know Rob Romley from doing play by play of the Tate delayed broadcast.
H
That was before. Well, before the days of the SEC network.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, yeah.
H
Their conference networks and. Well, pretty well a little bit before the days of espn and eventually they took it all over. But with football, Ryan, the first year I Did the Games was 1980. Tommy Bell was on.
Ryan Lemon
Tommy Bell, Yeah.
H
I had some great other like Charlie McCullers and you know, Derek, Bill Ransdell and many Dusty Tim. But we did like I think the first year 1980, we did 10 of the 11 games.
Ryan Lemon
Really?
H
Yeah. Now they'd only let us do one game live and that would always be. That would be. If it was on the road. It would be the LSU game and then it would be a big non conference game on the road. They would let us do one game live on the road and the others had to be tape delayed and you couldn't start them any earlier than. I don't know, maybe. I guess it might have been 11:30.
Ryan Lemon
As soon as the news was over.
H
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
As soon as the local news is over.
H
Yes.
Ryan Lemon
Game camp broadcast and then of course.
H
That'S back in the days when we did basketball too the first year Ryan. We probably did, you know, live games. We probably did seven or eight live and then you know, the rest the conference, the conference games had to be all tape delayed. They wouldn't let us do a conference game. But eventually as you go through the 80s, that's all whittled away. And ESPN.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
And the SEC network eventually came in. But eventually you got down to the point where you were just doing the two exhibition games.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
And then eventually it got down to where you were just doing Big Blue Madness. And eventually they took that and a whole, you know, the whole.
Ryan Lemon
Like you said, you did a couple football games with Dusty Bonner and Tim. Dusty too long ago.
H
Dar was on a season. He was on the year of 9 11. Because the, the Indiana game.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
So we had to go up to Memorial Stadium in Bloomington the first Saturday in December.
Ryan Lemon
Right. All the way to December.
H
They rescheduled the IU game and Dermani did that game. Fortunately it wasn't. It was a fairly mild afternoon, but Dermani did. But I had some great, you know, starting with Tommy Bell and Charlie McCullers who was one of Fran's assistants. And then you know, Derek Ramsey.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
We did the Alabama game together when, when mummy beat Alabama. That was probably the, the most memorable game that, that I, I did.
Ryan Lemon
You got to, you were calling.
H
Yeah, yeah. Oh yeah. And then you know, Bill. Billy was on with me. Bill Ransdale. Yeah. So I had some great, some great, great people alongside. It's a great, great memory. I was very, very fortunate to, to get to do it.
Ryan Lemon
Not only did you do play by play for football and basketball, but you also did the coaches shows for so.
H
Many years you got close, close to the coaches, starting with. Starting with Fran. Starting with Fran Kersey and starting with Jo B. Yeah. When I came here, Ryan, I always. I will always say this, I was very fortunate that. That Joe was the coach here with basketball because he made me. He made me feel like I was a part of it, which was. Which meant the world to me.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
And there were other people over at the university who did. Who did, too. They were. They were. They were fantastic. Cliff and his wife, Dr. Singletary and his wife. And, you know. Who was I?
Ryan Lemon
You're Rob. Rob.
H
I was, you know, I was just, you know, pretty young, you know, 26 when I came here, in 77 and then 30 when I started doing the stuff with the coaches. Yeah, but you get pretty close to the coaches and, you know, it can be up and down with the coaches. The hard thing with the coaches were always the downfall. Right. And starting with the first one, you know, was with. With. With Fran in 81, and then, of course, the situation with Eddie Sutton, which was in 89. And. But, you know, you have a lot of great moments and a lot of great memories, too, and certainly a lot of great things to look back on. Not just here, but you lived other places. You grew up in Indiana.
Ryan Lemon
Indiana.
H
I grew up in upstate New York and spent four years in Indianapolis, four and a half years in Ohio in the last 48. I've been here and I've been four. Met my wife here and raised my son here. They're both UK graduates, and like I told. We're both very proud of him and got a lot to be thankful for. Really, really do.
Ryan Lemon
Well, we're very thankful you're here. I'm so excited you agree. I gave you all kinds of notice. I don't know what you're complaining about. 9:30 at night.
H
Yeah, it was. It was like quarter to nine. I was watching something on Netflix there, and I didn't see the mess. I didn't respond to it, too. I gave you a tentative yes.
Ryan Lemon
Yes.
H
You did a ton of yes.
Ryan Lemon
Okay. What does Rob Bromley watch on Netflix?
H
Oh, gosh.
Ryan Lemon
On a Monday night.
H
We, you know, we're getting up in our ears. We've been watching that series, the Crown. Yes. Which is very good. Extremely well cast.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
And who in the world knows what the private conversations were.
Ryan Lemon
That's true.
H
Between the Queen and the Prince of Wales and all this stuff. Who knows? But it's. It's interesting to watch and you can. You can really learn a lot if you go Way back to the, the earlier seasons of it with Elizabeth's life.
Ryan Lemon
Historical stuff.
H
Yes. What she went through and what the years were like when she first became queen and all of that. Who the prime ministers were, what her dealings were with the prime ministers, beginning with Churchill and all that. You can learn a lot from it, but who's to say what. And I'm for one, I don't care for rewriting history. I don't really care for, for it. Like I heard you guys talking. I listened occasionally. Somebody was talking about something on Jerry west that he, he threw his MVP through a window or something. There was some kind of the, the.
Ryan Lemon
Documentary about the Lakers.
H
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Depicted that.
H
And he was suing because he didn't do that. Well, you know, I can understand his point on that.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
I don't, I don't you want to.
Ryan Lemon
Dramatize it so much.
H
Well, you're, you know, you're doing television.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
H
Is what you're doing.
Ryan Lemon
Right.
H
I gotta get somebody to watch this. But he insisted that never happened. And I certainly believe him.
Ryan Lemon
I believe him more than the producers that were trying to make, like you said, TV good.
H
That's where it comes down.
Ryan Lemon
We gotta take our break. We'll come back. We got one more segment. Rob Brownlee, I could talk to you for two hours. We got story after story. I would love it. And we. I'm so glad you decided to come in, even though you got, you didn't invite you till late last night. So we'll take our final break. Come back. Final segment with Rob Bromley here on the patio at KS Bar and Grill. What's up, CB Ryan Lemon, we'll be right back.

H
Yeah, I, you know, I got more, like I said, more than 45 years out of it. Ryan. I'm in for 40 here, almost 41.
Ryan Lemon
That's amazing.
H
But I was, you know, it's. It's not easy to go that long.
Ryan Lemon
No, it's not.
H
You go through a lot of ups and downs.
Ryan Lemon
Well, you know, we're talking during the break I go to. I never see the 11 o' clock news. The 11 o' clock news is a big part of your life and my life for so long. I am never up long enough to see the 11 o' clock news.
H
I started doing the 11 o' clock news at LIO in Lima the week that President Nixon resigned in August of 74. That's when I started working nights. And I worked nights until the very end of September. Yeah, 2017. So how many. I mean, how many years? I work nights, basically. And, you know, you get home and, you know, I don't go right to bed.
Ryan Lemon
You can't go to bed. Just get off the set.
H
You get home, you know, you're watching television. You get something out of the refrigerator.
Ryan Lemon
And watching Dave Letterman?
H
Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. It's just. And I'll tell you, when I first started doing it, after doing early morning radio for two years, it felt great. It felt great to sleep in. But I think as you go along and you're not in your 20s anymore, you're in your 30s, it gets a little more complicated. And when you're in your 40s, it gets a little more complicated. In your 50s, it gets a little more, you know, you have a youngster and you, you depend on your wife a lot.
Ryan Lemon
That's right.
H
Certainly I did. And. But got through it, you know, got through one. The whole landscape of the business changed a whole lot as far as what radio it was owned by, by local people like KYT was owned by Kentucky Central. I only went through one sale. That's one that's rare. When the insurance guy, I had the insurance company here fell apart, I had Kwood Ludford say to me once, you know, he said, you know, Rob, I never went through a sale because I guess, I don't know, by the time HA's and the Bingham empire was. Was broken up over there, he'd already been out on his own. But that. He told me he never. He never went through a sale. But that's. That can be a difficult thing in.
Ryan Lemon
Our line of work. It happens all the time and you're kind of starting the clock over. We're just about out of time. Like I said, we got to come back. We've got a bunch of stories to tell. Really good to see you, man. You look great. I mean, retirement. Retirement has done you well, partner. I'm telling you.
H
I'm telling you. Still standing.
Ryan Lemon
Still standing. Doing well.
H
Thankful to the. All the people who, you know, come up to me and say something and that, you know, I always felt a lot of love, Ryan, once I got outside, you know, once you went outside the walls of the station and got out there and people are wonderful.
Ryan Lemon
That's the best part about this business, are the people. Yeah. The people we work with is what I miss the most about this business. And I think you probably agree the same. Listen, man, thank you very much. You're well, great to see you. Thanks for being in. I appreciate it.
H
I'll talk some more.
