Nmlsconsumeraccess.Org welcome to hour two of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome back. Hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio here live at the KS Bar. You could do better than that. There you go. Right at the KS Bar and Grill. We are, we have just opened after a three month hiatus. Yes. And folks here eating lunch. We appreciate all of them joining us. We'll here. So I'll be here today during the show and then from 12 to 3. The moment this show ends, Ryan, I flip it over and ESPN begins.
Ryan Lemond
You said earlier I was going to talk to you about this. They send you your production list at 11:30. You can't review it because you're doing this show. You're going to be just going in naked at.
Matt Jones
I'm not going to be naked. I'm going to go ahead and wear my clothes during the entire show today.
Drew Franklin
Thank you.
Matt Jones
You're welcome. I've got, let's see, segment one, Trey Hendrickson and the Bengals. And the Bengals.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Segment two, Darnell Rivas calls out the NFL Players Association. Don't even know what that.
Ryan Lemond
Wow.
Matt Jones
Don't even know necessarily what that means. Giants release Tommy DeVito figured that'd be a big one.
Drew Franklin
That was all over my feed this morning. The QB situation in New York.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
So ready.
Matt Jones
Should be, should be exciting. All right. One person writes on the text machine. Matt, with UK football starting Saturday, do you think there will be any changes or anything done by UK to make the game day experience more exciting this Saturday? I hope so. No, I mean I Do hope so. I don't know if they've done anything, but again, part of what you're going to have to do to kind of get this new era going in theory is that you would like to do all of that, right?
Drew Franklin
I hope so. I have very little expectations that that has happened, but I'm hoping there's stuff new. I will say I'm surprised by a lot of people getting excited about the tailgating. At least online. I'm starting to feel good about that early pre game scene being week one. But as far as any upgrades to the experience, I don't have a lot of faith in UK doing that.
Ryan Lemond
You know, people have had their tent spots reserved for a couple weeks after you drive over there and they're everywhere. So all those people show up and it could be a great environment. But are they doing anything new that I don't know yet?
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, the game is at 12:45. The weather is supposed to be like perfect. Perfect, right. I mean the, like it's. It's supposed to be the best football weather you can imagine. Like 79 degrees for August. August. I mean, I. It's going to be about as good as you can be sunny. I mean, if you're trying to think of a time to go to a game. Tickets for those who, like, they're going to be relatively cheap. As the guy who called or who called earlier or maybe it was you that was sitting here said, hope springs eternal. Like, everybody is. I guess it wasn't you, it was the car. But like everybody is zero and zero now.
Ryan Lemond
That's right.
Matt Jones
So I mean, but as far as like, are they going to do anything new?
Ryan Lemond
I don't know.
Matt Jones
I haven't heard.
Drew Franklin
We're getting Dumas Walker. We're getting. All roads lead to Lexington. I don't know if they still have the big blue drum that only lasted a season or two.
Ryan Lemond
That's true. Whatever happened to the big drum?
Matt Jones
Did we have a drum?
Drew Franklin
We tried to make it a thing.
Matt Jones
What was the drum?
Drew Franklin
They rolled out a drum and then hit it. And then we were like, yeah. And then they kicked off. I think Art still did the first one.
Matt Jones
We hit it and we said, yeah. We were like, all right. Drum.
Shannon Dawson
Is that the thing they show off in the new video game?
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Shannon Dawson
Where they're beating the drum to go big blue.
Drew Franklin
EA Sports.
Shannon Dawson
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
The message that we didn't really get into.
Matt Jones
Wait a minute, We. We had a drum?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, yeah.
Ryan Lemond
Like those big huge bass drums. They rolled it out and before the game they Would have a former player come out and bang it and it lasted like maybe one season, did not take off.
Matt Jones
Why? What were people supposed to do?
Drew Franklin
I don't. We weren't sure. They'd bring it out and then it'd be like, boom.
Ryan Lemond
Everybody would clap and then it would be like, all right, disappeared on the next.
Matt Jones
Did you know there was a drum.
Shannon Dawson
Just only from that video.
Matt Jones
Only from the video, yeah.
Shannon Dawson
And I think they were supposed to go, go big blue and he's supposed to hit it on beat.
Matt Jones
So did they highlight the drum on the video game?
Shannon Dawson
Yeah, yeah, like that's what they show.
Matt Jones
But we don't really do that.
Drew Franklin
I don't remember still have it. It never really. Never really got going.
Ryan Lemond
I don't remember seeing it at all last year. Now that I think about it.
Drew Franklin
Missouri has one called like Big Mo and it's a big thing and I think we tried to borrow from them and it didn't.
Matt Jones
It just didn't hit.
Drew Franklin
We. I don't know if we're a drum crowd. We're still trying to get Dumas Walker going.
Ryan Lemond
I got an email today from uk. It says, get game day ready. I thought, well, this might be the list of stuff they're going to do for game day. No, it's just an advertisement about UK shoes. Visit the UK shop to buy shoes.
Matt Jones
I mean, again, we've spent a lot of the off season talking about how it would have been nice to introduce people to the. To stuff and it would have been nice to do this and it would have been nice to do that, but really that stuff just didn't. Didn't happen much. And I guess you can just kind of assume it's not going to happen. Right?
Drew Franklin
We see. I don't like to give them credit, but you can turn on a night game at nail in or just about anywhere and it is just a different fan experience. It is here in Kentucky. That's just not a strength. Mitch Barnhart. It's been a few years, but didn't he say fans need air conditioning, place to sit in the water or something stupid like that? It's just being at the. Well, he's front line of trying.
Matt Jones
He's very old school and he thinks. I mean, he just thinks this is. Well, first of all, I mean, here's the thing about Mitchell. He thinks all fans. I've always known this about him, even when I talk to him, he thinks all fans are like him. Right? He believes this is what I like in a game. This is what people like in a Game. And I've said this a lot and it's no offense to him because I think he's done a really good job on a lot of stuff. You have to talk to people that are not the people that are in your, your zone and I just don't know how much of that, of that happens with him.
Ryan Lemond
Well, you said he only kind of answers his email. Well, who, who email.
Matt Jones
If you're, if you brag about not being on social media, well, I mean you're not going to know what a significant chunk of the fan base wants. So we have Missouri has the worst game day experience in the sec. Vandy does too.
Ryan Lemond
Pretty close. Yep.
Matt Jones
But we're probably after that. I mean we're probably of the game day experiences. We're probably 14th of the 16 now in basketball. That's not true. Not at all. In basketball, I would say. Where would you rank the Kentucky basketball game day experience in the sec?
Drew Franklin
I have a hard time rating it because every time I go to an away game it's the Kentucky game and they're just camping out in parking lots and it looks like the greatest thing ever. But I know when I'm not there with Kentucky, it is not.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, I think kind of hard to get. I think that's a great point. If you were to say average game day experience, game by game, Kentucky basketball is one. If you were to say big game experience though, you can make an argument that Auburn or Arkansas, even Arkansas has a better big game. But then we've seen Arkansas games where no one's there. Like no one. So I think if you said game by game, Kentucky would still be number one.
Ryan Lemond
There's no doubt when it was a big game. Rupp arena is rocking it. It is the best.
Matt Jones
But when I see, I think it's the opposite. I think for an average game, Kentucky's the best.
Ryan Lemond
I think on a big game, there's.
Matt Jones
Nothing no better than Auburn. When they play Kentucky.
Ryan Lemond
Oh yeah, I've been down there. But Kentucky, when it like when the biggest games I've ever seen are Kentucky, the atmosphere in Rupping is just like the best ever. You know, like the Florida game in the 03, you know, games like that, the, the North Carolina game where Anthony blocked the shot, it's just amazing.
Matt Jones
I mean I want to say that's true and I think it's, I don't get me wrong, I think it's great. But like, you know, we were at Kentucky, Indiana in 20 in 2012. I've been to many Duke, Carolina Games. I've been to Michigan State. Michigan, right. Part of it's just the size of Rupp Arena. It just can't get as big. But I. But on a game in, game out basis, Kentucky's number one.
Drew Franklin
And some of these SEC schools you don't, or most of them, you don't get Kentucky on your campus. But every other year. And if you don't have much basketball history and when the SEC is down, you know, if you got Kentucky coming to your school, you circle that the minute the schedule comes out and you're camping out T shirts. I'm not gonna turn into Cal here. All that how he spills it. But that is the experience when Kentucky rolls into your town for basketball.
Ryan Lemond
Remember when we played at West Virginia? We all went to that game. We all like. My goodness, this is awesome. It was West Virginia, but the atmosphere was great that night because Kentucky was in town.
Matt Jones
Yeah. 859-280-2287. Who's up next?
Shannon Dawson
Bobby.
Matt Jones
Bobby. Go ahead, Bobby.
Caller
Hey guys. Hope you all are having a good day. I am with Shannon. I think that we will make a bowl game. And to all the haters out there that talk about Calzada, there is not a very long list of SEC quarterbacks of beating Saban led Alabama teams that SEC quarterbacks have beaten. So he's one of them. So just something to think about.
Matt Jones
Yes. Remember, Calzada has played well against Alabama. We've had people say, we've had people say, hey, you know, can we not just have him be like he was in that game? What do you think the best of of Calzada will be this year?
Drew Franklin
We run it, run it, run it, run it. And then he throws a bomb off a play action for a touchdown.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Or he gets the tight ends going. I'm not gonna say this is the year. But you have Willie Rodriguez, who looks like a freak. Josh Cattus, who's been playing every snap since he was a freshman. Maybe look at him. But we're not going to talk ourselves into a tight end year. But this would be a good year for how Calzada can really be helpful is get those guys going.
Ryan Lemond
And I'm not mistaken. Calzada did not throw a lot of interceptions at incarnate word.
Matt Jones
Right.
Ryan Lemond
Like he's pretty active, makes good decisions. He does that.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
They can do some magic then maybe once in a while.
Matt Jones
Hope so. I mean I, I remember the game. He played so well and he beat Alabama. He looked amazing. It's been a while, but I also feel like he gives us a shot, which is ultimately what our goal, you know, ultimately, that's all we can ask.
Drew Franklin
Even though he's got some swagger and he told us he's one and done and he wants to show off his cannon, I'm. I'm pretty ready to just go back to hand it off if we have the offensive line to do it, play defense and try to win 22 to 21. Because I was screaming, you think that crazy with our offense, you think that's.
Matt Jones
The best chance for Kentucky to win?
Drew Franklin
I just think that Mark Stoops is your coach. That's the way you got to do it. We saw what happened when he tried to go out get the flashy playmakers and turn the offense into something he's not used to.
Matt Jones
He's.
Drew Franklin
He's a ground and pounded guy.
Matt Jones
Yeah. 859-280-2287. What do we think about the story that the Alabama assistants had to call Nick Saban Daddy?
Ryan Lemond
That's embarrassing.
Matt Jones
Have people seen this story? Yeah, have you all seen this story?
Ryan Lemond
It's embarrassing.
Matt Jones
Okay, so Seth Wickersham is writing a book about quarterbacks, and in it, he's telling stories about quarterbacks. And there's two parts to the story. Part one is that the Alabama coach. Alabama's assistant. Let me follow this. Alabama's assistant is recruiting Arch Manning. Okay? Arch Manning. He's the guy. The assistant's on a zoom with Arch Manning, and he says about the Texas coach, Steve Sarkeesian. He's my best friend. I love the guy. I hope that he's able to stay sober, which is a really terrible thing to say if you think about it. I mean, like, I love the guy, but I hope he's able to stay sober. I don't know, Phil. Ethics is pretty rude. But when they get off the call, one of the other assistants looks at the guy who says that and goes, hey, dude, that was a jerk thing to say. Which good for that assistant.
Ryan Lemond
Yes, it was. Yep.
Matt Jones
And he said, sorry, Daddy's on me. And then Wickersham says, the Alabama assistant coaches are. Would refer to Nick Saban as Daddy. Thoughts?
Drew Franklin
It's hard to imagine Operation so Professional. Is that. That Saban, he's got guys called him Daddy Mario.
Matt Jones
You like that? You're going to call Saban Daddy? No. You're not going to do that.
Shannon Dawson
What about you, Daddy? Daddy Fat Stacks.
Matt Jones
I don't like it. I would. I've gone on the record as saying, ryan, please don't call me Daddy Fat Stacks. I don't like that name. I think it's terrible. But at least he puts fat stacks after of it. Because if Ryan just looked at me and said, daddy, I would fire him on the spot.
Ryan Lemond
We call you Uncle Matt, and I.
Matt Jones
Would ask him to pay back pay. We.
Ryan Lemond
We call you Uncle Matt. We're conversing with each other. We might say, hey, dad wants us to do this.
Matt Jones
Okay? There's a difference between dad and Daddy.
Drew Franklin
Daddy is. You don't need to call anybody.
Ryan Lemond
That's true.
Matt Jones
There's a difference.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Dad is one thing. Daddy is another.
Drew Franklin
I'm not calling anybody Daddy.
Matt Jones
Okay? That's different. And I think it's really funny to think of football coaches calling each other Daddy. You know, football coaches are all like, yeah, smack me in the head. Yeah. And then they're like, Daddy, though, wants me to get the player. I don't know. I don't know, Drew. I think that's bizarre. And the fact that it's Alabama, that's.
Drew Franklin
The thing you think of, like, probably the smoothest, most businesslike operation in all of college football. They're calling him Daddy behind the scenes.
Matt Jones
Do you think Nick Saban wants the out? Do you think Nick Saban wants the assistance to. To. To call him Dad? I don't think so.
Drew Franklin
I can't. He seems just too intense to want to be called Daddy. Like, I would expect him to be like, call me sir at every moment.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I think I. I just have to say, I think this story should be getting more attention. Like, I. Like, I feel like I'm the only person that brought this up. It's in a book, and it's about Arch Manning. I mean, this has all the things you would think would be a big story. Arch Manning, Nick Saban, Alabama, Texas, they're going to play each other. I just.
Drew Franklin
Sark getting called out.
Matt Jones
Sark getting called out. Sark being called an alcoholic. A coach bringing up that he's an alcoholic. A coach who now coaches for Lane Kiffin saying, it sounds like you're the.
Shannon Dawson
Only ones who's read the book.
Matt Jones
Maybe I haven't read the book. This was online. I haven't. I mean, anyway, I just find it to be a little bit of a weird story.
Ryan Lemond
I agree with you. We call you dad. We don't call you Daddy.
Matt Jones
First of all, we. No, I don't call him dad. No one calls me dad. But you don't act like that's normal. I don't like when you put familial terms on me.
Drew Franklin
Can you picture, like, UK Assistance Calling Stoops Daddy. Like heck. No, it's like, I can't think of any coaching operation, them referring to him as Daddy.
Matt Jones
I, Belichick, might have some.
Drew Franklin
Patino. Probably had a few daddies.
Matt Jones
Take a break. Period back. Scare you. Sorry. Welcome back Techy Sports Radio, 859-280-2287. Text machine is 772-774-5254. One person writes, matt, do you think they will ask Nick Saban about that on game day? No, I do not. I do not think they will ask them that.
Drew Franklin
You don't think Pat McAfee will try to work one in?
Matt Jones
Well, now that actually might happen.
Shannon Dawson
What if you said, like, listen, Daddy, and then said something after that?
Matt Jones
Actually, no, you're right.
Ryan Lemond
I can see that.
Matt Jones
I. I could see him doing it.
Ryan Lemond
I can see it.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I could see him doing that. I think that was. That was a little bit. One person says, you remember, Matt, during COVID people were calling Andy Bashir daddy. Yes, they were. And I thought that was odd, but it was. It was women, which is still odd in that about the governor, but it's not the same as your.
Drew Franklin
Your boss, your direct paw. I mean, it's definitely weird not excusing it. I thought being in a football locker room is even weirder.
Matt Jones
The woman who started the, like, govern me, daddy thing, which I made, to be fair. I made fun of that at the time.
Ryan Lemond
Yes, you did.
Matt Jones
I actually have gotten to know her and I like her quite a bit. And I still am like, why did you do this? She was like, well, he was on tv. I was like, you still. You. You shouldn't have done.
Drew Franklin
He was like, right in the head in that period. We're all going through some things.
Ryan Lemond
Yes. He was like our father figure talking to us, helping us out.
Matt Jones
He was the governor. I thought he did a good. But, like, he was not. He was. Did you think he was your father? You're older than he is.
Ryan Lemond
I am older than him. I gotta admit.
Matt Jones
I see your father figure when you're older.
Drew Franklin
I don't think they were saying govern me, Daddy and the father.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I think they were meaning it in a more sexual.
Ryan Lemond
Okay.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I don't think it was quite like you maybe meant. Or maybe you did. I don't know.
Ryan Lemond
I did say when you bought us all lunch yesterday. Thanks, dad. When you were paying again.
Matt Jones
But the DY does a lot of work in that sentence, you know, I.
Ryan Lemond
Should have said, thanks, Daddy.
Matt Jones
Do you want me to start doing this? Who's next? Shannon?
Drew Franklin
Matt.
Matt Jones
Matt. Go ahead, Matt.
Caller
Hey, guys. I heard you guys talk earlier about Alcaraz and the haircut, and I decided to call in towards the end of that, so hopefully I didn't miss this. Are you guys aware of the reason that he cut his hair?
Matt Jones
He said his brother screwed up his hair. Is that right?
Caller
That is correct.
Matt Jones
And yeah, he.
Caller
I guess he didn't fly his barber out from Spain. Probably seems like a long trip. But yeah, I just thought that was a pretty crazy story. And sorry I missed that towards the end. And I'll.
Matt Jones
No, no, I didn't say that. But I did hear that the reason he. Yeah, I appreciate the call, Drew.
Caller
He.
Matt Jones
The reason he. Alcaraz shaved his head was his. His brother screwed up his hair and so he felt like he had to shave it.
Drew Franklin
Think about his brother. I mean, if you just open the Internet, you're going to see that on most sports websites. His brothers created a big sports controversy here. Yeah, he did get a loud applause. And also was that Katie George from Louisville interview?
Matt Jones
Katie George is now doing the main court. Katie George is doing the. The interviews for the. For the US Open. Now.
Drew Franklin
He asked the crowd if they approved. They cheered. So he had a little bit of a moment there in the match.
Matt Jones
Katie George, by the way, is part of a nice piece of KSR tr, which is one year WDRB named its Louisville Sports Figures of the Year and it was three winners. The three winners were me, Katie George, and American Pharaoh. Wow. And American Pharaoh, of course, one of the legendary horses, Katie George is now doing US Open and etc. And then there's me. And so I, at first I was a little. I felt a little disrespect that I, I was tied with a horse.
Ryan Lemond
Horse.
Matt Jones
And I think Katie George was like a senior in college at the time or something. Now I think the horse and her have definitely passed me. And now I am the most embarrassing of the threesome that won that year.
Drew Franklin
She's on my television on the main Arthur Ash court at the US Open. And you've got Ryan calling you daddy.
Matt Jones
Yeah, not nearly. Not. Not nearly as impressive. Cal Raleigh, the catcher for Seattle, got his 50th home run last night of the season. Here's what I found interesting, and I know you baseball guys will care about this. Most home runs ever by a catcher. Does that surprise you? He's. He is in his rookie, his first full season playing, has the most home runs in a season ever by a catcher.
Ryan Lemond
I didn't realize that that was the record for most home runs By a catcher, but he's obviously had a great season. What they call him? Big Pumper. What's his nickname?
Matt Jones
Big Dumper.
Ryan Lemond
Big Dumper.
Matt Jones
Because he has a big butt. That's why they call him that. They call him the, they call him the Big Dumper.
Drew Franklin
I was surprised they haven't had anyone get 50 home runs up there in Seattle since Griffey. I know 50 is a lot, but since Griffey I thought they'd have somebody, some power hitter.
Matt Jones
Shannon, I was kind of surprised. There's never been a catcher to get 50. And then I was sitting and thinking, well, who would it have been?
Shannon Dawson
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And I guess catchers, like power hitters just aren't catchers, right?
Shannon Dawson
Sure.
Drew Franklin
Why?
Shannon Dawson
Because usually a catcher is a big guy. You would think that would be your power hitter. So I was surprised to hear that as well. I didn't know that was the record.
Matt Jones
I guess the record was Johnny Bench.
Ryan Lemond
I'll say Johnny Bench or Mike Piazza. They don't play as many games. They get a break, you know, every once in a while. Maybe that's why that's true.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, it's probably.
Matt Jones
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that is a good point. Mike Piaza, that's. Yeah, that's one I would have thought. That feels like he, he was a big home run here. But I was surprised to see, I had no idea that he was the, he was the only one.
Drew Franklin
Didn't Pudge Rodriguez hit some bombs?
Matt Jones
Yeah, Pudge Rodriguez, another Carlton Fisk, I guess is a dude who would hit a lot of home runs. Right.
Ryan Lemond
Trying to think other power hitting catchers, they're just not a lot of them out there.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but Shannon's right there. They tend to be big dudes, so you would think there would be, there would be more than there are. Who's next?
Shannon Dawson
Justin.
Matt Jones
Justin. Go ahead, Justin.
Caller
Yes. I think one thing that I see a lot online is a lot of Kentucky fans think that we are just guaranteed to get to only two wins. Six wins is very possible. You're three small opponents. Then if we're going to be Kentucky football, we need to get back to beating Vandy. That's four. So then you just need two more between. And I'm not going to say we're going to beat Texas or Tennessee, so I'm not even adding them. So then you get your other two wins between either Auburn, Florida, South Carolina or oh, I can't remember the fourth one. If the O line plays the way that they're supposed to.
Matt Jones
But you just mentioned eight teams. I mean all those teams you mentioned except Auburn are top 25 teams. I mean to say, like not Mandy. Okay, so yes, not Vandy, but we're going to be Underdogs likely in eight of our 12 games. And if we're an underdog against Vandy, which is plausible, we'll be an underdog in nine of our 12 games. Now that doesn't mean they can't do.
Caller
We be Ole Miss on the road last year. From what I understand, they're not going to be as good this year because they don't have Jackson dart and their defense didn't improve. Auburn has been on a downslide.
Matt Jones
Okay, but hang on just a second. You can't sit there and say we beat Ole Miss last year and then act like Auburn didn't crush us last year. So like if you're going to use the analogy of we can beat Auburn or excuse me, we can beat Ole Miss because we beat him last year, then you have to say Auburn is Auburn 25 points better than us. I mean that's, that's you. You got to be fair. You can't just say, well, we beat Ole Miss, so we'll beat them. But let's ignore that Auburn and South Carolina blew the brakes off of us. This. We'll be right back.
Drew Franklin
T.J. smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. he'll make them pay.
Shannon Dawson
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-280-2287. Text machine is 772-774-5254 KS Bar is back open and love to have you come out. We'll be here all week and then of course Saturday as well. One person writes, Matt, we lost 24 to 10 last year to Auburn. They didn't beat the breaks out off of us. We were up 10 nothing after the first quarter. Well, yes, but we were up to nothing after the first quarter. Didn't score again, rest the game. Auburn was awful. They were reeling that year and they won and now we have to go to their place when they are likely to be better. Now do I think we can win? Yes, I think we can win. Do I think we can win at Vandy? Yes. Do I think we can win? Do I think we have to act like that? We. I don't think you can make the case though. Hey, we beat Ole Miss. They're not as good this year so we should certainly be able to beat them this year and then ignore what happened in the games against South Carolina, Georgia you know, all those teams last year.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. I mean, you can't just look at the last year and Repeat it, especially 50 new players. But I will agree with them that of the ones we have the best shot at winning Ole Miss at home is one of the better opportunities. I don't think we'll beat Auburn on the road. Not just looking at last year, I think they improved the road game. I'm. I'm looking at Florida and Ole Miss both being in Lexington as chances to win one. You're not really predicted to. I mean, it's been hell, it's been two years since they've won a home SEC game. We got to win one this year. I think those are two that you're looking at.
Matt Jones
Yeah. The path to six wins is when two of the three road games of Auburn, Vandy, Louisville, win one of the home games. Florida, Tennessee. To me, that's, that's the path to six wins. Two of Auburn, Vandy, Louisville, one of Florida, Tennessee. I'm not going to assume we beat Texas, Georgia or even Ole Miss. I mean, Florida, Tennessee or Ole Miss win one of those.
Drew Franklin
And Florida is coming here in mid November. They haven't done that in 35 years. They got quarterback concerns with Lagway, who's supposed to be this great thing, but his situation has been murky since he's been there. So even though it's Florida, I'm looking at that one as the one we need to take. Heck, one like four out of five against him anyway or whatever it is.
Ryan Lemond
Kentucky's 2 and 11 in their last 13 SEC home games. 2 and 11, that can't happen. But then you look at the schedule.
Matt Jones
This year, we are 2 and 11.
Ryan Lemond
In the last 13 SEC home games.
Drew Franklin
Beating Florida a few years ago is the last time we've.
Caller
We've won one.
Matt Jones
I mean, I knew that. But then when you say it, there's something about the way, like when, when you, when you hear it like that.
Ryan Lemond
That you sec home games, I think you try to kind of pull something out. Vandy's beat you two times. The last two times here on your own field.
Matt Jones

What's next, Shannon?
Shannon Dawson
Adam.
Matt Jones
Adam. Go ahead, Adam.
Caller
What's up, guys? Jerry. Shannon. I would have thought Javi Lopez with the Braves. I know he had a 40 home run.
Matt Jones
I'm gonna read you. I'm read you the top catcher home runs ever. Cal Raleigh now has 52nd. Salvador Perez with the Kansas City Royals. How many of you would have gotten that?
Ryan Lemond
No.
Matt Jones
Then Johnny Bench with 45, Javi Lopez 43. Todd Hundley and Roy Campanella had 41. And then Mike Piazza and Johnny Bench had 40. Only eight times in history has any player who's a catcher hit 40 home runs in a season.
Drew Franklin
Someone wrote me that if you're a catcher, that's a great hitter, they'll move you to DH or outfit a lot too. So it might change the position.
Matt Jones
That's true. But go ahead, Adam.
Caller
Yeah, I think when you look at what is the best version of this upcoming season, I think it's. It's getting back to running the ball, you know, converting short third downs, not being in so many third and longs. And then we don't need Calzada to be a Will Levis, Andre Woodson, we need him to be more of a Terry Wilson and Steven Johnson. Just don't make, you know, don't make crazy mistakes and just manage the game.
Matt Jones
I agree with that. I appreciate the call. I mean, Will Levis won you games, but Steven Johnson and Terry Wilson worked with others to manage victories. Calzada is probably a more of a quarterback like that. Would you agree?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, but my big concern with him is that, you know, he's very open. This is my year to make the NFL. I worry he might try to do too much in circumstances. I mean, that's just me speculating. We haven't played anything yet. But if that, if he were going to, you know, hurt Kentucky, I think turnovers and trying to do too much. No quarterback says, yeah, I want to be a game manager. But he just needs to make the short, immediate throws. Something Levis struggled with a little bit. And then when it opens up to throw the deep one, you know, try to put it on spot.
Ryan Lemond
I did like what Stoop said on his coaching show last night about Calzada. You know, all the talk about Cutter had, it was not a reflection on Calzada. He said Calzada has been great, said Cutter just kind of exceeded our expectations. Kind of. He elevated himself by his play. But Calzada has done nothing wrong. It's just it was more of a praise to Cutter, not a knock on Calzada.
Matt Jones
That's good to hear.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, it is.
Matt Jones
That's good to hear. And listen, all this talking in five days is going to be over. We're going to know if he's good or not. I mean we're, we're going to know when I do that post game show, that's going to start about 5 o' clock on Saturday. We're going to know a lot. I don't think we'll know everything, but we're going to know a lot. But we did win 41 to six last year against Ohio and then that didn't.
Drew Franklin
Well, our two. That was a little later in the year. Week one, the lightning storm, we were killing Southern Miss. Not probably to the level of this Toledo team, but still a respectable team. I mean, Bush Hampden showed in in game one. He can be ready to score some points. It didn't continue the rest of the year, but Ohio and Southern Miss, they piled it on.
Matt Jones
That's true. Who's next?
Shannon Dawson
William.
Matt Jones
William. Go ahead, William.
Caller
Hey, good morning, Matt. I wanted to call in a while ago, but In a Small World actually had dinner with one of your Aspen Institute classmates, Chris Johnson.
Matt Jones
Really?
Caller
In Mississippi?
Matt Jones
Yeah. That dude. That's the nicest guy that might be the nicest person I've like. He's an awesome dude. I'm glad to hear you say. I'm glad you did that.
Caller
Yeah, yeah, we. I was working with the Mississippi legislature. But anyway, small world as it relates.
To the football season.
Always. Scott Van Pelt always says being optimistic costs the same at least to start the year. I just, you know, have no reason not to go into the season and be optimistic about, you know, I'm on Team Shannon making a bowl game.
Matt Jones
Might as well bet the over for.
Caller
The season and bet the cats to cover week one because why not, right? So just got to go into the season at least that may change after week one. But going into it, I think it, you might as well be positive because it costs the same.
Matt Jones
Totally agree with that.
Ryan Lemond
Yep.
Matt Jones
Appreciate the call. Might as well be positive this week as much as we can. I mean, I'm, I'm going to try to be realistic about our win total, but in terms of being excited about the games, why not? We're going to play it. Why not be excited? I mean, I'm, I'm looking forward to Saturday morning. I mean, I'm looking forward to being in this place Saturday. I hope it has an electric atmosphere. I mean we're opening for breakfast. I hope people come. I want to feel excitement during the game. I'd love to see that stadium be rocking. You know, you only get 12 football games a year. We might as well enjoy them. I mean, this been a long off season. Maybe the most boring off season I can remember in sports. We might as well. Might as well enjoy this.
Drew Franklin
Get seven or eight where we really get to be a part of it. Here in Lexington, you know, the game days and the KS bar days, there's not quite as many.
Matt Jones
What do you think about Dave Portnoy? Dave Portnoy banned from being on Ohio State's field for the first. For the first game of the year for people don't know runs barstool. He works for Fox Sports and Fox Sports is doing the Ohio State Texas game. They are going to be doing their pregame show from the field. And Ohio State said Dave Portnoy cannot be on their field. He's a Michigan fan, talks a lot of trash about Ohio State. What I think is interesting about this. Let's. Let's. Let's say that ESPN were to put me on college game day. They wouldn't, but let's say they did. And Louisville said he can't be on our field. That's basically what you're talking about.
Ryan Lemond
It is.
Matt Jones
You think that's fair for Ohio State to do?
Ryan Lemond
I think each school has the right to approve credentials and disapprove credentials of anybody. So if you apply for Louisville and they know you're gonna be on game day on their field, I can see them saying, that guy ain't getting it. That guy's not getting a. You are probably the only person they would probably signal like.
Matt Jones
I think they would. They would let me on now when George was here. They wouldn't have left. No way. They would let. But don't you think that's petty? I mean, don't you think that, like. I think that's unbelievably petty to say, like, you know, that's part of his shtick. Are you so like Ohio State put.
Drew Franklin
Out something saying don't blame us. This is all Fox.
Matt Jones
I don't believe that.
Drew Franklin
For it to come out. I mean.
Matt Jones
I mean that the story came out last night and then Ohio State didn't put their statement out until this morning. If it really wasn't them, they would have jumped on it early and said it wasn't us. I. Whatever the case, I think they did damage control there too. I think it's not game.
Drew Franklin
No one watches that show, who cares? Would anyone know what Dave Portnoy said on Ohio State's field?
Matt Jones
Do you think it seems soft?
Drew Franklin
Oh, it definitely seems soft.
Matt Jones
You think it seems soft, Shannon?
Shannon Dawson
Yeah. I mean, come on. You're making a bigger deal out of this if you're Ohio State by doing that.
Matt Jones
I. I totally agree.
Drew Franklin
I think you act like you don't even care, that you don't even give them the opportunity to be that big. I'd be like, who?
Shannon Dawson
Right. Exactly. That's exactly what you're making a big deal about. It now everybody's talking about it.
Matt Jones
That it is one of the. It is one of the lessons that over the years I've had to learn and that people should learn all the time. If you really want something to not be a deal, don't ignore it. That's why I think so much outrage in society is fake. Because the reason they're outraged is for content and clicks. It's not because they're actually outraged. You know, it's because it allows them to feed the machine. Same thing with this. If you really want Portnoy to seem irrelevant, don't worry about it. You have, by being outraged, made him much more relevant than he would have been if you had just ignored it to begin with.
Drew Franklin
And if you're Portnoy, a content guy, we know if you're gonna play this, I mean, it's only gonna make you bigger and, you know, give you more confidence. You've got the school.
Matt Jones
He completely loves it. I mean, the best thing that happened to Drew's post game basketball recap show was UK kicking him out because we used it as a way to promote the show and it became a thing. Like, that's the. That was. If. If UK did not want Drew to get attention for his post game recap, they did the dumbest thing they could have done, which was by saying he couldn't go there. Had you just been standing there on the court, you'd have had to build it a different way. But by you being outside and us.
Ryan Lemond
Being like, people searched him out.
Matt Jones
People searched him out, wanted to come on, say, go get him, Drew. Like, and the worst the weather, the.
Drew Franklin
More people want to tune in.
Matt Jones
That's so dumb. Like, people and Ohio State's fallen for the same thing here.
Ryan Lemond
I would Drew, though, I think it's 100 Ohio State. They may have released that statement, but it was. It was them from the get go.
Matt Jones
Of course it was.
Ryan Lemond
Yes.
Matt Jones
It's ridiculous for them to act otherwise. 859-280-228, 7. We're here at KS Bond Grill. We'll take a break. Be right back. Kentucky Sports Radio. What song is this? Shannon. I don't think I know. This spring.
Shannon Dawson
She's got issues, huh?
Matt Jones
I had no idea that that was a song.
Shannon Dawson
Yeah.
Matt Jones
You know, nobody. There is nobody better than Shannon at doing these songs. Let me tell you about Noche Linda Farms. Right now. For the people here who are eating the burgers, you are eating Noche Linda Farms beef. It is local. Kentucky Proud Beef. We're the only place that serves it, and I think it is absolutely amazing. And you can get it in your home. Go to noche Lindafarms.com and enjoy the convenience of having great meal options wrapped and ready in your. In your freezer. This exact. This is the exact stuff they give us you can take home with you. It's fantastic quality beef. You guys have had it. You make it all the time.
Ryan Lemond
We made Noche Linda brisket last night, as a matter of fact.
Matt Jones
It's. It's the beef in the grocery. You know how they'll add color additives to make it look red? That's why it turns brown in your refrigerator. Not with Noche Linda Farms. Their cattle are humanely raised to the highest standards without steroids, hormones, and antibiotics. It is Noche Linda farms dot com. Did you see the fight between the quarterback and the brother and his son outside the game in Dublin, Ireland?
Drew Franklin
I did. What a wild scene to a father, son fist fight. You don't get that very often.
Ryan Lemond
You don't.
Matt Jones
You don't get that lot. So for people who don't know, Kansas State's playing Iowa State, Iowa State beat Kansas State. After the game, the quarterback for Kansas State, the quarterback, his dad and his little brother get in a fist fight rolling on the ground outside of the stadium. Kansas State fans have to break it up. Kansas State fans are trying to basically make it to where their own players, brother and son and dad will not fight each other. They're rolling in the rain. It's a disaster. After it's over, the father. The father releases a statement saying, look, we just. You know, this is what happens in families. My bad.
Ryan Lemond
No, it doesn't.
Drew Franklin
No, it doesn't. I don't think I've had zero fist fights with my dad. And if I did, it would be my last fistfight.
Ryan Lemond
This was so embarrassing. Embarrassing for the team, the family, the quarterback. I mean, it was just. It was. It was awful. Those. Those. Both those men need to grow up.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. He said our bickering escalated. I Mean, I've bickered with people I haven't then rolled around outside of sporting event.
Ryan Lemond
Exactly.
Drew Franklin
Pull us off of each other.
Ryan Lemond
It's awful.
Matt Jones
Seems to really make you mad.
Ryan Lemond
I mean I've done some stupid stuff in my life when it comes to a dad maybe yelling at an official or yelling at a coach. But I'm not going to get into a fist fight with somebody in my own family over a football game. It's just awful.
Matt Jones
And in, in a foreign country.
Ryan Lemond
Shame on them. Shame on them.
Drew Franklin
For people didn't see it. It's not like they're having a little dispute. I mean it is taking a crowd to get them apart from each other.
Matt Jones
And then you do wonder like if the people that are Kansas State fans, this is their quarterback.
Drew Franklin
A good one.
Matt Jones
A good one. They pro. They probably knew it was his dad. Right.
Ryan Lemond
I'm sure they did.
Matt Jones
So imagine, you know, I'm trying to think of what the situation would be like. It would be as like, can you imagine if you walked outside and like Will Levis's dad was fighting his brother outside of Kroger Field and you were just there.
Drew Franklin
You can't even imagine that. But Kansas State just got that awful.
Ryan Lemond
The huge black guy on your program.
Matt Jones
Very angry about it, aren't you?
Ryan Lemond
It really kind of upset me. I mean I felt bad for the quarterback. I mean he didn't ask for any of this. He didn't sign up for this. His dad and his little brother get into a fight outside the game in Dublin. Ireland is trip of a lifetime.
Matt Jones
So what's the closest you've come to being if not in a fist fight? Something embarrassing with your, with your, with your sons in public.
Ryan Lemond
I got kicked out of that Coach Pitts baseball game one time when he was 8 years old. That was not maybe the my shot.
Matt Jones
But you weren't fighting with your kid. That was fighting on behalf of your kid.
Ryan Lemond
I was just yelling at the umpire and he said don't say another word. And I said, you know, don't touch him. That's it, you're out.
Matt Jones
Don't touch him?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Who was touching him?
Ryan Lemond
The first baseman kind of pushed the kid off the bag.
Matt Jones
So you were yelling at an 8 year old?
Ryan Lemond
No. Well, I was yelling at the official then when the official said don't say another word. So I yelled at my, my first baseman, don't touch him.
Matt Jones
What do you mean your first baseman?
Ryan Lemond
My first baseman pushed the kid off the bag when he was, when he tagged him. Tagged him a little hard. So it Kind of pushed him off the bag.
Matt Jones
So you were yelling at an 8 year old.
Ryan Lemond
I just said, don't touch him.
Matt Jones
Boom.
Ryan Lemond
Out.
Matt Jones
Hard for me to believe they would kick him out for that.
Ryan Lemond
They did.
Matt Jones
I mean, that explanation to me doesn't pass the smell test because I said one more word.
Ryan Lemond
Part said, don't say another word. I said, don't touch him. Boom, you're out.
Drew Franklin
Sounds like this umpire is your daddy.
Ryan Lemond
We're actually friends now.
Matt Jones
Are you?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Okay, it's time for our draft kicks. Pick of the night. You go to DraftKings. You can bet who's going to hit a home run. You can bet who is going to do the most strikeouts, etc. You know, again, we'll have football starting Saturday. The Reds lost seven to nothing. The good thing was they were down three nothing early. So I got to go to bed because I knew there was nothing. No way they were coming back for that. With Hunter Green pitching tonight, Clayton Kershaw goes against Nick Martinez. I don't like that matchup for my team. I'm. I'm going to be honest with you. Maybe our worst pitcher against their best pitcher or one of their best pitchers. Who you got?
Ryan Lemond
Not just one of the best pitchers, one of the best pitchers in the history of the game. This is a Dodger win. Sorry. Reds stink.
Drew Franklin
I'm going to go over. I was trying to pull up the number. They're both pitchers are just going to get absolutely knocked out of the park.
Matt Jones
Really?
Drew Franklin
Oh, yeah. Give me the over.
Ryan Lemond
What is it?
Drew Franklin
I'm gonna say over nine and a half. All right.
Matt Jones
Over nine and a half. Wow. Overnight, you think they're gonna get rocked?
Drew Franklin
Both sides are getting rocked tonight. High scoring game.
Matt Jones
All right. Interesting. What do you think, Shannon?
Shannon Dawson
Reds lose? Yeah, I think. I think the Dodgers.
Matt Jones
I'm gonna take the under. The Reds right now are not hitting at all. Did you see. However, I must say, even though we lost the behind the back double play by Hunter Green.
Ryan Lemond
I did see that. Yeah.
Matt Jones
That's one of the best defensive plays you'll ever see. Guy hits a ground ball. Hunter Green catches the ball behind his back and then. And then does a double play. I. That was one of the coolest things I've seen.
Ryan Lemond
And you know, he just. It was just a blind swipe. Those guys, they did a blind swipe behind their back. Oh, I caught it. The ball's right here in my glove.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
Double play.
Matt Jones
Thank you, folks very much who came out here today. We very much appreciate seeing you, especially those of you that made a drive. We're here the rest of the week. Open tonight. Please come see us this week. It's glad to be back in the swing of things here at KS Bar. I'm on ESPN for the next three hours. Matter of fact, I'm just going to slide over and change the things to talk to that. Thank you, folks, very much. This has been Kentucky Sports Radio.
