Drew and I did. Drew and I did a little remodel work. You know, the pictures kind of put up some different things and stuff. Got some New Jersey, so see all the things. So, Shannon, you may remember this. Lee K. Is no stranger to KSR either. He famously was co hosting KSR one morning with Dave Buzz Baker, and Buzz was going to be the lead. Lee K. Was the co host. Dave Buzz Baker did not show up on time. Right.

That's when. And Shannon yelled at me. I remember this.

[Shannon the Dude]

I yelled at you?

[Lee K. Howard]

Oh, yeah.

No, no.

[Lee K. Howard]

So this was like, this was like a decade plus ago. This is before KSR got so big that, like, Jay Billis and Howard Stern were doing the summer shows and. And they were asking just anybody to do the summer show as Matt was. And he had asked Buzz Baker to anchor a summer show or host a summer show. And the night before, Buzz text me, and he said, hey, I'm hosting KSR tomorrow. Can you jump in with me? And I was like, sure, why not? So I drive over to the Nicholasville iheart studios.

[Ryan Lemond]

The old building.

[Lee K. Howard]

The old building. And I'm there at like 9:40, because I'm just. I want to be prepared, right? And 9:50 comes along. No buzz, I'm sitting there. 9:55 comes along. And if you know Buzz Ryan, you know he's notoriously late to everything.

[Ryan Lemond]

Always comes in at the last minute, last minute. But he usually makes it.

[Lee K. Howard]

Yeah, he'll. He'll. He'll be putting his microphone on in the studio at wkyt like, seconds before he talks. So I'm not too worried. But then it gets to like, almost 10 o', clock, and I'm thinking, is Buzz gonna be here? So I start texting him, hey, man, you. Are you coming? And he texts me back, yeah, I'm in the parking lot. Be right in. I'm like, okay, sounds good.

[Ryan Lemond]

We're good.

[Lee K. Howard]

It gets to like a minute or 2 after 10 o'. Clock. Finally, here comes Buzz walking into the studios. He's carrying a stack of papers. He sets him down on the table, goes, gotta go to the restroom. I'll be right back. I'm like, okay, wait, What? So. Because 10 hours ago, I didn't even know I was gonna be on the show. I hadn't prepared. It was a summer show, so there's not an obvious topic. We hadn't talked one second about what we were gonna discuss. So he leaves the room. Well, I have my headset sitting on the table in front of me, so I can still kind of hear it. And all of a sudden, I start hearing Werewolves of London. Dun dun, dun, dun dun. And it's like three times into it. And I did one of the dumbest things I've ever done in my broadcasting career, media career. I pick up the headset and I spoke into the microphone and I go, shannon. Shannon, are we on?

[Ryan Lemond]

I don't know.

[Lee K. Howard]

Like, was Shannon just practicing?

And Shannon goes, you could be more irritated. She had it. Goes, yeah, we're on. It's ksr. We're live. We're live. You're on.

Come on. You don't. You know what you're doing?

Yeah. And I'm thinking. I'm thinking, I don't know the phone number. I don't know a sponsor.

And so I just babble, probably for like 10 seconds. It feels like 10 minutes. And then finally, here comes Buzz walking into the studio. He could not be bothered. He was not in a hurry. Just walks over, picks up his thing, goes, all right, where are we at? You know, so anyway, that was. I'm surprised you guys had me back after that performance.

Well, it has been 10 years or so, so we had to, you know, put you on the suspension list, I guess, for 10 years. Was it your fault, though?

[Lee K. Howard]

It wasn't, but it felt like my fault. It was. It was bad. So I got here early today. But I will tell you, Ryan, if you weren't in this building when I walked in, I was going to just hang out the parking lot because I did not need Shannon yelling at me again for starting the show terribly.

I have no memory of that whatsoever. But I would assume that's the last time you ever agreed to do a show with Buzz after that day.

[Lee K. Howard]

Yes, yes, yes. Now. Now I wait till he gets there and I show up after him.

You did a show one time with Cameron Mills, you said at ksr with Cameron Mills way back in the day also.

[Lee K. Howard]

Yeah. Hosted with Cameron. That was. That was. I think that day. We talked the entire show about how college athletes shouldn't be paid.

So that is not age.

And in fact, world.

And in fact, I've changed my opinions greatly on that subject. But, yeah, it's. It's been a while, but it's good to be back.

Wow. You started KYT about the time I started ksr, I guess about the same time.

[Lee K. Howard]

Yeah. In fact, I remember moving to Lexington and you guys were just getting kind of big. You had been around, but, like, KSR was really becoming a thing, and it's crazy to see, like, the trajectory of. Of this show and how it's not only statewide but almost, like, nationally known in a lot of ways. So, yeah, that. It's been a while.

[Ryan Lemond]

So we got Lee K. Here, and we're gonna have like an ask anything Wednesday. I'll open up the phone line, take a lot of calls today. 859-280-2287. Of course. You know where I'm taking her to dinner tonight? There's only one place you go for special birthday dinners, right? Especially if she lives in Georgetown. Rodney's on Broadway in Georgetown gets a visit tonight.

We all know that you over the years have gotten free meals at Rodney's. Will you be getting a free birthday dinner tonight for her?

I hope not.

I hope you pay like you should.

So you take her to Rodney's for a free steak, and then you take her to KS Bar afterwards. Right? Is that what.

[Lee K. Howard]

Yep.

Jeff Goodman, Rob Doster, Jack Pilgrim helped me co host. They were great. But we only had them for, like, 30 minutes because they had to leave, go to UK practice. We had to do their own UK interviews, do their own podcast, and watch UK practice. After UK's practice, the plan was they were going to come out of the craft center, meet Jack Pilgrim, Steven Peak, and do, sources say, podcast for them. Right before the podcast started, they were going to call an Uber. So while the Uber was en route to pick them up at the craft center, they were going to stand out there with Jack and Steven and report on what they saw at practice for the podcast. Plan was perfect. Practice went a little long. Jack Pilgrim said he got a text from Rob Doster, said, hey, man, practice going long. We're not going to have time. We have to get to the airport. Our flight's at like, 7:00', clock, and right now it was already like, 5:30, something like that. So Jack called an audible, decides, I'll take him to the airport. This is where the story gets beautiful, Shannon. They put Rob Doster and Jeff Goodman in the backseat. Steven Peake was in the passenger seat with his camera and microphone. Jack was driving, and they did the podcast in the car while driving the two guys to the airport. I mean, if that is. That is so KSR right there. I. It's the best Lee K. It's the best reporter interview since Cutler chased down Billy Gillespie over at the Memorial Coliseum.

[Lee K. Howard]

Yeah, that was gonna be hard to top. But I do, you know, first of all, Jack does an awesome job. They do a great job with that, Sources say podcast, and I watched the entire thing last night.

[Ryan Lemond]

I did, too.

[Lee K. Howard]

And I'll be honest, had they just been standing outside of the craft center, I don't know that I would have watched the whole thing.

[Ryan Lemond]

Good point.

[Lee K. Howard]

And first of all, it wouldn't have gone that long. So they almost found a way to have a captive interview, a captive audience. It's not like they were going to just quit.

[Ryan Lemond]

They just quit talking. They were in the back seat of the car.

[Lee K. Howard]

You literally had a destination to get to. And into the interview. So, no, I thought it was. I thought it was awesome. And my only concern, Shannon, was I don't know if you saw trying to put Doster and Goodman's luggage in the back of that car. I don't know whose car it was, but.

There'S an outtake that Jack sent me. As they first pulled away from the craft center, Jack almost hit somebody. He almost killed him. Pulled right in front of somebody, it looked like.

[Shannon the Dude]

So that would have been a completely different podcast.

[Ryan Lemond]

I encourage everybody to go listen to this. It's on YouTube. You can watch it and listen to it for two reasons. One is just the hilariousness of it happening in the backseat of this. Of Jack's car while Jack's driving. Jack's asking the questions while he's driving.

Right.

But the second reason is there's a lot of really good info in there about this basketball team. I guess the big newsy thing was Ortega O way has suffered the Joe Burrow injury and has turf toe. That's why he's been walking around in a boot. And apparently he's gonna have another couple.

[Lee K. Howard]

Weeks in the boot.

[Ryan Lemond]

And what did the Bengals lose? Joe Burrow. And now the Cats lose. Will take it for a short time with turf toe.

[Lee K. Howard]

Listen, I didn't know turf toe was such a big deal. Obviously, my athletic career didn't span past high school, but, like, that seems to be a big deal. Although the good thing is it seems like Ortega's is not near as, you know, you know, bad, I guess, as Joe Burrows is going to keep him out for a couple months. But no, that was great. And you can tell that Goodman and Duster have a great relationship with Pope.

Absolutely.

And so they're able to, one, get into a practice like none of the rest of us local media can and get all this information. And I thought it was very informative. The Otega thing was informative. Kind of like some of their insights on, you know, which player was doing what and who seems to be kind of ahead of the others. I thought if you get a chance, I mean, a lot of that stuff was really good.

It was.

They were also really high on Jalen Lowe, which was good.

I did get a text on the a vision glass text machine, Shan. It says, are you sure that's Lee K. Howard? It sounds like Rick the producer. No, they sound alike.

No, he doesn't sound like Rick at all.

No, man. Lee K. Didn't mention wine one time. That's very true.

Very true. Yeah. So, all right. We talked about the field of 68 guys. Jeff Goodman and Rob Doster went to practice yesterday, got to talk to Coach Pope and a lot of the players. I'm just going to go down some stuff that they talked about in the crazy podcast from the backseat of Jack Pilgrim's car. And you guys, both of you want to comment on it? Then the one thing I think was Jeff Goodman who said, make no mistake about it, this is Jalen Lowe's team. He is the leader. It's his team. They go as he goes, yeah, and.

[Lee K. Howard]

I think that's what everybody wanted to hear because Pope's system, historically, if he's got a good point guard to run it, it can, it can go. And we saw when Lamont Butler last year was healthy how good this team could be run. And then of course they got into trouble with, with injuries at that point guard position. But the way that Jalen can, can really effectively run this, this Pope system I think people are going to love because last year at Pitt he had to be a guy who shot all the shots, the good shots, the bad shots, whatever. He can work on being a distributor this year and we got to interview him once in the summer and it was great hearing from him because that's what he wants to do. Like he's, he seems like one of those pass first point guards. He wants to distribute the ball and he's on a team right now that he's going to have so many options, so many guys he can get the ball to.

[Ryan Lemond]

Shannon.

[Shannon the Dude]

Yeah, I mean, I think that's what you want to hear. He's the guy that's going to, you know, make the offense go. And I think that a lot of the offense is going to go through he and Ortega away as long as we can get away healthy to the point. On OA with that turf toe, he said that if it were like a game today or tomorrow, he would be able to play. So we don't have to worry about. I don't think about always injury much but. But yeah, I think a lot of that offense is going to go through those two guys.

[Ryan Lemond]

I agree.

[Lee K. Howard]

And can you imagine when you get those two on the floor together?

[Ryan Lemond]

Yes.

[Lee K. Howard]

Like, I mean that, that is a onew punch that any team in the, in America would take with, with Jaylen and Ortega.

[Ryan Lemond]

Talk about Jalen and Ortega. Both Rob and Jeff both emphasized several times that there are seven perimeter players that not just can play, are gonna play seven different guys that may be as deep a backcourt as we've ever had here.

[Lee K. Howard]

Well, there was a previous coach at the school that didn't play seven players.

[Ryan Lemond]

Well, that's a good point complete, I.

[Lee K. Howard]

Mean at all positions. And so you've got, you've got the ability to put seven guys in. I think Jalen and Ortega are going to eat up most of those minutes. But you're right, you, I mean you've got to find a way to get Aberdeen into, into the game. I mean he was on a national championship team last year. I think Jasper Johnson is another guy who you know he's going to play. He's got this upside that maybe some of these other guys don't have, but he doesn't have the experience. I mean, there's going to be a lot of guys who come in thinking that they've got a lot of minutes. They're going to have to share minutes. But I think most of these guys understand that.

[Ryan Lemond]

Shannon.

[Shannon the Dude]

Yeah, I mean, Pope believes that he is deep and I mean super deep, one through 13. He mentioned you were talking about the seven perimeter players. He's got seven guys. He says in practice. This is hard to believe, but he says they're shooting 70% from three.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah.

[Shannon the Dude]

Including yellow, who is shooting 77% this past week in practice from three. If you. I don't think that's going to translate to 70% in gameplay. If so, then we've got an NBA team on our hands and we're, we're going to win the national championship if we got guys that can shoot that well in the game. But just to hear that even in practice, I think is. Is amazing. So I think that this is going to be maybe the best three point shooting team we've ever had. He said he wants to break that record of most three pointers made in a single season. If he's got guys that can shoot that well, I think we're, we're on our way to seeing that happen this season.

[Ryan Lemond]

One more point, we're going to go to the phone lines where you're talking about Yellow bitch. You know. Yeah, he did say guy been shooting 77% from threes during practice. And oh, by the way, he's 610. Yeah, they're like a better version. I think we might have been Goodman. So he's better going to be a better version of. Than Andrew Carr was. Wow.

[Lee K. Howard]

Yeah, he's the guy that I think a lot of people want to see because he's like the great mystery, you know, and we don't have to go too far back in the past to see like a Zvonimir v Sit. And people were so excited to see what he could do. And everything that I've heard is Yellow Vic is further along at this point in his career than I said ever was. So Yellow Vic is going to be a guy that like, like you said, the Andrew Carr role.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah.

[Lee K. Howard]

And I think that's how they described. I think that's how Goodman described him on that, on that podcast. But I think he can do more than what Andrew did. I mean, he can step out, take the shots. He can we've seen a lot of video from his, his league across wherever it was, Bmax or whatever it was called. And he can get the ball to the rim. I mean he's, he's a talented, talented player. I think he's one of those players that Pope just loves to have in his system because he can do so much with him in a way that he's like a unicorn.

[Ryan Lemond]

Right? Yeah.

[Shannon the Dude]

The guy's already a pro and when I think, think of, you know, yellow, I can't help but think of visage. Right in my mind. That's so I can't wait to see him actually to play a game. But I just imagine him going out there and having every game like a visage. First game against was it Georgia where he came out and knocked down like three straight three point shots. So I can't wait to see him. I think he's probably the guy that I'm really Most intrigued to see.

And then, so whoever matches it and then they do the charity, do they really? Does Pat McAfee really donate a hundred thousand dollars out of his account out of the goodness of his heart? I've trouble believing that.

[Ryan Lemond]

Well, I didn't see that question coming, Andy. But I guess if he puts his money where his mouth is, his mouth's getting him in trouble, that somebody hits it. I guess he's got to come up with that somehow or what's going to say every week. But how many guys actually hit it?

Maybe it's like one of those things where you know, you see the half court shot and you know, like at Rupp, it's that central bank half court shot, right. And basically they buy an insurance policy where it's like $100,000 but the insurance policy that UK has to buy is like 100 bucks. So maybe, maybe there's some sort of like insurance policy that, that McAfee has that if, if he spends a hundred dollars then somebody, I'm just guessing but I can't imagine he's giving away $100,000.

Because every once in a while this was the thing that stood out to me. This last week at game day, I think it was last week or maybe the week before the kid that they picked out of the stands actually was wearing football cleats. Like he, it was almost like he came prepared. Like how do you pick that guy? Because you know he can hit it.

And he did hit it.

Yeah, yeah, he hit it.

He's probably a kicker at some high school or small college or something somewhere, right?

859-280-2287 alright, you know, we'd mentioned about kind of the newsy thing that came out of their podcast yesterday was about Ortega the turf toll. The other kind of newsy item was the fact that Colin Chandler was told him that he was basically hurt most of the year last year. You know, he really came on at the end of the season. I guess maybe that's when he finally was healthy. You know, he got the slow start because he was on his mission and kind of, you know, getting the rust off. But maybe he, you know, was injured and the Weezaws didn't know it. Once he got healthy then we saw the results of what he can be. Drew has already gone on record saying he expects that's the big breakout player, the guy that makes the big jump this year. Where do you see Colin Chandler fitting into what after what you heard yesterday?

[Lee K. Howard]

Yeah, it makes sense what they said because you could see kind of the trajectory of Colin throughout the year and it felt like the last month, month and a half he Got really good, you know, and a lot of that we all kind of attributed to, well, he hasn't played basketball and a year or two, you know, and so like he had to get his, his legs under him. But if it was true, like Jeff Goodman said that he was injured for part of it and part of that was just him getting healthy then, then look out because he, he was like. I can remember that Vandy game in particular. He came out in Rupp and played really, really well and looked like he would. Well, he took over Travis Perry's spot as the backup point. He did at that point. So if he can make another leap. And I think it was either Doster or Goodman yesterday talked about kind of how bouncy he is, how athletic he is.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah. Talking about how mobile he was.

[Lee K. Howard]

Yeah. I think, I think there's a lot that, that, that Chandler can do. So I, I like Shannon. I like what, what Colin Chandler can bring to the stage.

[Shannon the Dude]

Yeah, I mean, if you go back to last season, he was a guy that I didn't think really would get any significant playing time at all. And at the end of the year, he's one of our best players on the floor. So I feel like he brings so much to the team. He makes it difficult for Pope to keep him on the bench. He almost forces you to play him. And I think that he is going to have a big role in this team. Now, I don't know, like, if you were to say, how many minutes is he going to get? I don't know about that, but I think that he will continue to have a significant role on this team.

[Lee K. Howard]

And I think he's kind of, in a way, he's kind of the backup point guard. Right?

[Ryan Lemond]

Right. Because him or Aberdeen, one of the two guys.

[Lee K. Howard]

Exactly. And I think like I said earlier, Low is going to demand the majority of those minutes, but you got to have somebody behind him and that's the only obvious position. Position that doesn't have an obvious backup behind him. Jalen Lowe.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah. They said he's, like you said, more mobile, guarding better. Confidence seems to be up. So if Drew's right, we can expect a big breakout season sophomore season from, from Colin Chandler. My biggest news that I took away from the interviews was that Colin Chandler said that during a scrimmage yesterday, cam Williams hit 10 three pointers in a row. They just kept feeding him and he hit ten three pointers in a row during a scrimmage.

Yeah. Present Funko. That's on my list to discuss it. So let's talk about that Cam Williams, a guy we never talk about and when we talk about everybody else, he's the one guy that probably got gets lost in the shuffle more than anybody and it comes out that he hit 10 threes in a row during the scrimmage. Now I want to piggyback that by saying one of the TBT guys, I don't remember who it was, came on this show and, and said that Can Williams is a better shooter than Kobe Braya. Can we believe how much stock we put into this?

[Lee K. Howard]

I mean that's tough because Kobe was a knockdown shooter and I think Cam has a little bit more to his game. First of all the reason that nobody talks about him. If you remember, he committed while Kentucky was still in the tournament. I remember standing in Indianapolis and it was like we were getting ready for another live hit and was like, oh, yeah, Kentucky just got to commit. And it was Cam Williams. So I think his timing on when he committed and then the fact that he's from. From Tulane, it kind of got lost in the shuffle. But I do remember, like, early on, he was one of the guys that people were talking about. He has the potential to be an NBA guy just because of his skill set. So it doesn't surprise me that he's a guy that can knock down 10 threes in a row. I mean, that's. Who knows if he's better than Kobe or not. That'll be. To be. To be determined. But if he can, that's a. That's a weapon.

[Ryan Lemond]

You got to get that guy on the floor. Shannon, go out and hit 10 threes in a scrimmage game.

[Shannon the Dude]

I think Pope's going to have the problem of trying to figure out how to divide the minutes when you got this many guys that can knock down three point shots for you. I mean, we just mentioned seven. You can only play five. So how do you keep everybody happy? That might be his biggest struggle this year, is trying to keep everybody happy. And here's your drop, by the way of your cheeseburger.

Is in El Salvador on a mission trip and had to have an emergency appendectomy. And Pope, I think, went down to see her. So I think that answers the question why he was on an overseas flight. He was flying down to sit at bedside with his daughter. They had emergency surgery down there.

I do think that one of his daughters is on her, on, on the mission. And maybe that's. That's what that is.

But it's Emory or Avery. Avery. Okay, Avery.

There you go. But no, I mean, who. I'm sure Pope is on a plane almost every other day.

Yes. Like so he's the type of guy too that can drop everything, blink of an eye, throw some stuff in a backpack and go and not even think twice about it. And I think we've seen him do that with recruiting. And of course, it went at your daughter. She down. I'm sure she was scared by herself. Emergency surgery. He wants to go be with his baby girl. This weekend at a tailgate, and his family and nice, nice people and really enjoy getting to talk to them, but I'm a big Steph McGowan fan on this team, and his running style, I really think we got to keep leaning into that to let Cutter kind of continue to develop. I love the way he pushes it down the field. I think it's going to make us win a big game this year, but I also think it's going to cause us to lose one due to turnovers. If we were somehow to get a big win, would you guys rather have Georgia on the road or Texas at home?

[Ryan Lemond]

Good phone call. You know, Texas maybe looks maybe a little beatable with Arch Manning struggling a little bit. I like my chances at home more than on the road at Georgia. What do you guys think?

[Lee K. Howard]

I mean, I think either win would be obviously program shifting in a way that. Because Georgia's had Kentucky's number. I think, though, just because the Texas game is at Kroger Field, I think I would prefer that one.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah.

[Lee K. Howard]

Because you. You would give the fan base a chance to celebrate. And how long has it been Since Kentucky's had a chance to celebrate a home SEC win. I mean, it's been a while.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah, there's three in their, three in their last three wins in their last 11 games or something. A home game, something like that. Some crazy stat.

[Lee K. Howard]

It's not good. And Texas has never played in Lexington, so this would be their introduction to Lexington. Right. So, I mean, I don't even know how you can get years of playing. Has Diego Pavia played all those previous years? I'm not sure. Like that's the thing.

He played, he played two years in a juco. They're trying to wipe those two years clean. One of them got wiped clean. They're trying to wipe the other one clean.

Yeah. So, but, but, but to Shannon's point, at some point you've got to move on. And maybe it's something with Tennessee, the state of Tennessee, because this, this feels like Zakai Ziegler.

And the thing about it now is these guys are making so much money, right, that Pavia's probably looking at this going, I come back for a seventh.

Yeah, I can bank. Compared to like, he's probably not a draftable correct quarterback just because of his size and such. But yeah, like I, I took four and a half years and my parents were looking at me sideways like, are you ever going to like, like, like he, we were planning on four what's, what's this next semester all about? And you know, seven. That's all. By that time he's got a doctorate and he's probably teaching classes.

But you're right, he can make more money at Vandy than he could be in on the practice squad for the Buffalo Bills or something, you know.

Whatever he does after this, which I assume is not going to be, I mean I guess it could be pro football in a different, you know, maybe like arena football or something like that. You know, Jared did that for a while. Yeah, but you're not going to make, I don't think, I don't think those guys make that kind of money in that league, do they? So he's probably going to make a lot more money at Vandy for another year than he would at any other facet of life.

And I think football is the sport that you're going to see more of this in because kind of like what Shannon, what is alluding to. There's not like there aren't a, there's not a minor league system of football. Some of these other little pop up leagues have come up like the XFL and some of those that yeah, guys can go play in it. But it's not a, a feeder system into the NFL like major league baseball.

The NBA, G league feeds the NBA. So you can be a decent athlete in college and still find your way, work your way up into a pro league like the NBA or the mlb. If you're not one of those top guys then yeah, I could see why you want to be in college. Your entire.
