Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones, ladies and gentlemen.
D
Boys and girls, grandpas and grandmas, aunts and uncles, and welcome to Kentucky Sports Rad. Ryan Lemon, Shannon the Dude and super Mario Maitland here. And we are broadcasting live today, Main street in Mount Vernon, Kentucky where they just started the hunger walk. The Christian Appalachian project hosting their 14th annual Hunger Walk. And Shannon, they just started it right before we kicked off the show. And there's like 1300 walkers right now right behind us doing the hunger walk. It's kind of impressive.
E
Yeah, it is. And it's for a great cause as you pointed out there. And I got stuck behind this. We talked about this on the pre show a few minutes ago, but I got stuck behind this big parade and almost didn't make it here because of the hunger walk. I didn't know they were going to start at 8:30 in the morning, but here they are and we're right here on Main Street. And there's three other ones going on throughout Kentucky today as well, right?
D
Yeah. McCreary county has theirs today, Jackson county, and then there's also one in Fayette county for lca. So you kind of hear them walk behind us. A lot of the Rock Castle county student body came out to support the walk. We're all wearing the orange shirts. Orange is the color to help fight hunger.
F
A lot of orange.
D
Lot of orange. So they're also collecting critical funds, non perishable food items to support vulnerable communities in Kentucky. That's what the Christian Appalachian Project is all about. The hunger walk has just kicked off and you can still help. I mean we got, we're going to take throughout the show ways you can help. But it's right now, the walk walking right behind us here on Main Street.
E
Go ahead, Mario.
F
This is so cool, man. Like have you guys.
D
Kind of cool.
F
Have you guys ever done like a walk or. I know you did.
E
Well, I don't want to make this about me, but yeah, I have done a 50 mile walk.
D
I never, I never knew that about you.
F
Yeah.
D
So this little walk around downtown, probably nothing for you. Why don't you just jump right in there?
E
Well, I could but you know, I feel like I, I have to be here to help, you know, carry the show with you guys.
F
Show them how it's done. Channel.
D
Here's, here's, here's what's sad and we'll, we'll get to the show. We got to tell you what, why we're down here. One in five children goes hungry every day in Appalachia in Kentucky.
E
Yeah, yeah. When I read that this morning I was like, wow, I, I had no idea. That is an eye opening stat when you hear that. And it is really sad.
F
It's very sad.
D
There are a lot of kids where the only me eat all day is that school lunch.
F
That is terrible. We gotta do something about that, man.
D
Well, that's what the Christian Appalachian Project is all about. Trying to do that. So you can donate today by visiting ChristianApp.org that's ChristianApp.org so we are live here in Mount Vernon. We don't do too many shows from Mount Vernon, Kentucky. We did one at the the Farm to Table restaurant a couple years ago around the corner. What's the name of that restaurant? The Farm to Table restaurant. Somebody will tell us. I have no idea, but I think that was it. I think that's the only show we've ever done down here in Mount Vernon.
E
Yeah. And I don't even know if I was here for that one. So this might be my first one here. And it's beautiful part of the state. By the way. If you've never been down here before.
D
What do you think of when guys, when I tell you Mount Vernon or Rock Castle County. Can I tell you what? I'll tell you what I think of immediately. What do you guys think?
E
Well, I'll tell you. I was doing a little research on Mount Vernon.
D
Yeah.
E
I didn't know this until yesterday. Do you realize the city I live in, Mount Washington originally was Mount Vernon and they changed the name from Mount Vernon to Mount Washington.
F
Wow.
E
And then I think they maybe, I don't know if it was after the fact, then changed the name of this town to Mount Vernon.
D
The people, the people of Mount Vernon basically a lot stronger. They strong armed you guys in Mount Washington.
E
Is that what it was? We wanted to be tied into George Washington.
D
I got you. Wait.
E
Mountain. Well, we want Mount Washington. That's what it was.
D
Mount Vernon was his home. I think the George Washington's home.
E
I mean, do you not remember our Bullock county day that we highlighted everything about Mount Washington And I told you that Mount Washington was called that because George Washington loved the town so much they called it Mount Washington, which may or may not be true. Sometimes I just make things.
D
But on the show today it's true. What do you think of when you think of Mount Vernon or Rock Castle County?
F
I don't know much about Mount Vernon. I know pretty much it's a small town and that usually in Kentucky all the small towns kind of look Alike. That's what I've noticed. Have you ever seen like a Hallmark movie?
D
Oh, yeah.
F
Like the downtown.
D
Yes.
F
Like every small town in Kentucky.
D
Kind of gonna be shot right here in Mount Vernon.
F
Yeah, it's beautiful.
E
That is true. Yeah, it is very hallmarky. I think of Renfro Valley, though. We were talking a little bit on the pre show as well the country musicians from the 80s and 90s that play in this area. So that. That's also one of the other things I think about when I think about Mount Vernon.
F
What are they holding? They have these trays in there. What is the trays for?
E
I think it's for food. Oh, that's why it's a hunger walk.
F
Okay.
D
I guess. Are they picking up their donations? They're gonna give it all to Christian Appalachian Project when the walk is over. But now, like, we had the high school kids, now we're in the elementary school kids that are walking past us right now. And there's a bunch more coming up the street. But I'll tell you what I think of when I think of Mount Vernon and Rock Castle county. And this is kind of unfair, but it's just what I think of. Yeah, awful traffic on I75. I mean, this is where the traffic always backs up. This is where there's always a wreck. This is where there's always construction. The two Mount Vernon exits in Rock Castle county, you come up on them and you just hold your breath trying to get through them.
E
Well, I wasn't going to complain about the traffic, but I came down here last night and there was construction for what felt like about 100 miles coming down here.
D
It's always under construction out here in Mount Vernon.
E
What should have taken me about two hours turned into about three hours because I got on the gps. You know, you get on the gps, the Jeep is. It goes, hey, take a route over here. So I go, okay, let's take the back roads. We'll get there, you know, a little bit quicker. And I go off on the back road and there is a police car that is blocking both lanes. And I'm sitting in traffic again for another 30 minutes. So it took me a long time to get here last night.
D
Well, like I said, this stretch of I75 in Rock Castle county seems to been under construction for 30, 50 years.
E
30, 50 years?
D
Yeah. And it just never stops. Hello there, but you mentioned Renfro Valley. Some of the top music, country music stars of our of our lives have performed over there at Renfro Valley.
E
If you were a Country music star from the 80s or 90s, the long forgotten era. You either played at Renfro Valley or.
D
You'Re going to still you're about to play there. Yeah.
E
Coming up, as I was telling you, during the pre show, there's a lot of, well, Sammy Kershaw we just talked about who played the Kentucky State Fair is going to be coming into Renfro Valley with Aaron Tip and Colin Ray, Kentucky Headhunters, a bunch of those 80s and 90s musicians.
D
Have you heard of any of those guys?
F
No, I've never heard of them. I'm, I'm, I'm. I've never heard of one person that you guys just mentioned.
D
I bet we could find one person that's performed at R that Mario's heard of at least. Or somebody. Because they, they usually get the big stars that come in.
E
Mario is so young and that's. See, having Mario on the show just makes me remember how old I am. Yeah, because he doesn't know. Like we were talking about 90s musicians and 90s bands and he hadn't heard of, I think half of them, acdc. I played Stone Temple Pilots for him and he thought it was acdc. No matter. No matter what rock song I play for Mario, his stock answer is that's AC dc. This is like the only rock band that he knows from, you know, longer than 10 years ago.
D
Well, they're still kind of relevant. They play them at a lot of games. A lot of games. AC dc so the Kentucky Music hall of Fame is over there at Renfro Valley. They always have a big ceremony every year. I think the Judds were just inducted recently or maybe Wynonna, one of the judge. But it seems like I remember that being part of it. So it's kind of a cool little area down here that kind of gets forgotten about. And also somebody reminded me, I think it's like one of only three counties that is not named after a person.
E
Oh, really?
D
Bath County, Rock Castle county, and I don't know the other one. It might be Union County.
E
Okay.
D
I think there's three counties in Kentucky that aren't named after a person. So somebody can help us out.
E
Maybe in Kentucky we like Washington and Lincoln. Yeah, everything. Everything's Lincoln. Everybody tries to claim Lincoln as if you were their own. You know, there's a Lincoln Bridge and Lincoln county and Lincoln this, Lincoln that. So everybody wants a piece of Lincoln.
D
It's funny you said this. I have this on my list of questions. I just saw it go, Cat. Somebody just yelled, go Cats. What cities are there? Are there the most of the United States? Like, what towns are named the most after a certain person in the entire United States? Top three.
F
Cities. Not. Not streets.
D
Cities.
F
Okay, I know streets. I got an answer for streets.
E
Well, I would say Lincoln would probably be one.
D
I don't think it's one of the top three.
E
Oh, it's not. Okay.
D
Washington. Washington is number one by far.
E
Kennedy.
D
No.
E
No streets.
F
I know. Martin Luther King Jr. Like, that's in every city.
D
Every city.
F
Yeah.
D
Especially every large metro area's got a Martin Luther King Boulevard.
E
You might as well just give me the answer because I'll be here all day.
D
Well, the. The number three is another historical figure, but not a president. Not a president on the $100 bill.
E
I don't have enough hundred dollar bills. Even though Benjamin Franklin. Benjamin Franklin.
D
No, just Franklin. Just Franklin. Washington's number one. Franklin's number three. And I always. Every time Matt asks these questions, I always guess Springfield because there's a Springfield in every state. Springfield's number two.
E
Yeah.
D
So Washington's number one. Springfield was number two, and Franklin was number three on this list of most common city names in the United States. So kind of funny you mentioned that. I had it on the list today to talk about. All right, we're going to take our break. We're going to. The phone lines will be open. It's kind of going to be one of these shows where anything can happen because we've got a bowl up here. We've asked all the people in attendance to submit a question. We're going to randomly draw out of this bowl and answer the question that they have. We have no idea. Everybody here.
F
And I'm a little nervous.
E
Yeah. I saw you during the pre show going around with a bowl. I thought you were taking like an offering. Like we were at a church, and instead of, you know, offerings, he was handing out pieces of paper and pens. And we've got some questions. We don't know what's in that bowl.
D
No idea. But if you come to the show today, you can write a question down and we'll try to answer them. Also, the phone lines will be open. The Clark's pumping shop Phone number is 859-280-2287. Of course, every Kentucky sports radio sponsored by the T.J. smith Law Office called TJN.
E
He'll make them pay.
D
He'll absolutely make them pay. A vision glass tech machine is up and alive today. You know the number. Shannon has memorized the number.
F
I don't know the number? I don't know the number. 502.
D
Yes. What's five plus zero plus two?
F
Seven.
D
Seven. What's the rest of it?
F
Three. A lot of threes is in it.
D
35.
F
35, 36. 36. Eight.
D
80. 80. You're right.
E
Yeah. Now put it all together because nobody comprehended that. I'm sure that's listening.
F
Yeah, I don't think.
E
502.
D
Coach.
E
Seven. Good to see you, buddy. 53680.
D
Rocaso county football coach. Coach Larkey right there. So we'll take our break, come back. It's 859-280-2287. It's the Clark's Putman Shop phone number. We are live in Mount Vernon. This is Kennetti Sports Radio.

Some Kentucky headhunters that.
D
They've probably been at Renfro Valley.
E
Oh, yeah, no, they are. I. I listed them.
D
I go say the groups like that probably perform regularly over Renfro Valley. It's kind of a hidden gym in Kentucky, really. Welcome back to Kentucky sports radio. Ryan Lemon, Shannon the dude. Mario Maitland. We got Liam running the controls today. Matt, of course, is in South Africa. He's been posting some stuff on Instagram. Seems like he's doing well. This is his week of his fellowship. And then next week, he starts his kind of his vacation over there where he's going to do the. The safari.
F
Yeah, that's gonna be.
D
That's what most of us want to hear about.
E
You know, I need an update on how he's doing with this group of women.
D
That'll happen next week with the safari.
F
Okay.
D
Yeah. Right now, he's part of his fellowship group, and he's been posting some stuff to be able to keep up with that a little bit.
E
I did see Mario's video that he posted. I guess it was from the NFL show where Matt was talking about going across the street to get. And talking about how he needed a chaperone just to walk across the street there.
F
I love that video because I can. Can literally envision Matt. Like, I can. I can picture Matt in that situation. I'm like, oh, Matt's not going for this. He's not gonna let somebody go with them across the street.
E
Well, I mean, if you're in that situation where you don't know where you're at.
F
Yeah.
E
And you don't know your surroundings, and somebody asks you, do you need security?
F
Yeah.
E
They're asking you probably for a good reason.
F
Yeah. Yeah.
E
So I think in his mind, he thought, well, you know, maybe they're just trying to get a tip. I don't need it. There goes Mario with This is really bad.
D
But Matt. Matt knows more than the Internet.
E
We've heard that.
D
So he's. He said that to us before.
E
We've heard that.
D
So, you know, people down there maybe know a little more about the security issues going on down there than maybe Matthew does. Maybe he should listen to him a little bit. I'm thinking.
E
Yeah. And you think that's actually going to happen? Have you met Matt?
D
Yeah.
F
Right.
E
I just don't know that getting strawberry yogurt would be worth risking my life.
F
Yeah. Yeah. He's a big strawberry guy.
D
Yeah. So. All right, 859-280-2287. That's our Clark's Puppet Shop phone number. We're going to take your calls today. We got some questions, random questions out of the bowl. We're going to draw probably one a segment. We'll do that in a minute. But we did. Shannon, I did talk about on the pre show, something I want to talk to you about. Mario. The Cutter Bowley era bye week going down to South Carolina next Stoops, not the greatest coming off a bye week. What are your thoughts? Concerns about where the program is this week and going into South Carolina then next week?
F
I think Mark Stoops. Yeah. Usually doesn't do well after the bye week.
D
He doesn't.
F
He does not.
D
What's the record, Shannon?
E
Like 6 and 10 overall. 5 and 9 in SEC games.
D
Wow.
F
South Carolina's quarterback is hurt, right? Yeah, that right. So I'm trusting Cutter Bowley and what he can do. I'm trusting our defense. We definitely got to improve on that side. No. Last time we played Eastern Michigan had a few bad mistakes at the end of the first half. I'm trusting more of our defense and like I said, I'm sticking with Cutter Bowley. I know they don't have their quarterback, South Carolina. It's going to be a tough environment because South Carolina is a different animal down there. But like I said, Stoops has a chance. It's a big chance for him to really kind of turn the page in terms of the fan base. The big test for Cutter Bowley as well.
D
So, Shannon, you can take the numbers where he's bad coming off a bye week or you take the numbers where he's like 18 of the last 11 against South Carolina. Which way do you lean a little bit?
E
I think there is something to be said for the bad record after a bye week. I think that shows a lot in how you prepare. Now. We talked a little bit on the pre show. He's Going to change things up a little bit this week. They're going to go heavy in the weight room, they're going to go heavy in practice. They're not going to really take this as a true week off. So I think that that right there shows that he's willing to make some adjustments and hopefully we're going to see the result of that be a win against South Carolina. And talking about Sellers, he's questionable, so that means 50, 50. Maybe he'll play, maybe he won't. That really doesn't tell us one way or the other what's going to, what's. What it's going to look like for South Carolina when they get on the field with their offense. But again, if you look back at that Vandy game this past weekend, they laid out the blueprint on how you beat South Carolina.
D
So the way I look about Stoops changing his philosophy during his bye week, though, anything can help. Why not try it? Why not try to go heavy, prepare this week now don't give your guys rest. Don't play a lot of second team guys. Prepare as if you've got a game this weekend.
F
It's one game.
D
It's one game. Go heavy this week and of course you got game week next week. It can't, it can't hurt Mario.
F
No, I don't think it can hurt, man. I don't, I don't know. Like, I feel like, like what were they doing in the past? Like, obviously I think he was like.
D
Giving the starters a rest, let them.
F
Heal up, rest on by week, play.
D
A lot of number two during the week in practice and then pick it back up next week.
E
If you're Mark Stoops though, I mean you're going into the season whether or not his seat is actually hot or not. It, it is something that is perceived to be hot by fans because fans obviously weren't up, weren't very happy with the way that last season happened. So if you're Mark Stoops, you got to throw everything against the wall. I think this, yeah, this, this year. So anything you can to, to mix things up a little bit, fire your guys up, you got to try it.
D
We'll know about Sellers probably this weekend. South Carolina plays Missouri. If he's held out, I guess then the questions really ramp up for game week from Kentucky going down there. But they're a different team without him. They, they, they could not do anything against Vandy after he got hurt.
E
Yeah, I mean it was 7. 7 when he got injured. And then at that Point they brought in their backup quarterback and that's when Vandy just took advantage of them. And you know, I think it's only fair if they're going to play their backup. If we're going to play our backup quarterback, they should have to play their backup quarterback. It's only fair.
D
I like our backup quarterback maybe better than their backup quarterback, though.
F
I agree.
D
What we haven't really talked to you about, what are your thoughts about what? Cutter. Bowl, he's the Cutter. Bowling era is underway.
F
You know, I'm a fan of him. I'm a fan of him. I got a chance to talk with him in June. I believe he came on my podcast. Man, he's a. He's not really like all about him, him, him. Like, he's not a. He cares about his teammates. He has good energy and he's super, super confident. He likes, he likes playing football. He's in love with the game. You can tell that when you watch him when he's on the field. He looks like he's actually having fun out there.
D
He.
F
I love the fact that he likes to throw deep balls and, you know, take that risk. Kind of a little bit different than Calzada, but other than that, man, I like Cutter as a person. I think he's a good dude and, you know, he has a lot of promise for his future.
D
All right, we're going to get our first question out of the question. Bowl buddy here has written a question.
E
This could be dangerous.
D
Pick you. One of you guys pick a question now. We'll just take turns.
F
We're getting this one each.
D
No, just, we'll just do one second. Shannon's got the first one. What's your question, Shannon?
E
Did Lamar Wilkerson commit?
F
This is for Ryan.
D
Here's the story I got that night before he told the Kentucky guys I'm coming the next morning, Indiana made an offer that was better than what he got from Kentucky. Money was better. And I think they also offered somebody with his circle a coaching position or position on their staff. So overnight it switched that next morning. Then he went to Indiana because they came up with a better offer. So I think we had him for like maybe what, eight or nine hours.
F
And then it switched on you and.
D
Then the next morning. That's the thing I've learned about recruiting, man. These 18, 19, 20 year old kids, they change their mind overnight.
F
That is true.
D
You know, we've seen it happen a lot of times you commit to somebody, then the next morning like, nope, I'm flipping, I'm Switching somebody else.
E
You. You put your. Your name out there.
D
I did. I felt good about it.
E
Put your reputation on the line. And then he flipped.
D
Yep.
E
And made you look bad.
D
He did.
E
So does that make you proceed with caution in the future when it comes to maybe scooping, being up against Scoop Lemon?
D
This may sound crazy, but it doesn't because I trusted the source. The information was good. At the time we went on with KSR that he was committed to Kentucky. By the time KSR was over, he had flipped and committed to Indiana.
E
So you are 100 confident in that moment, in that moment. All in on Kentucky.
D
Yeah.
E
But then somebody, you know, switched it, brought in a suitcase full of money and said, here, what do you think now?
D
And I think a lot of it was just offering that somebody within circle spot on the staff. I think that played a big part of it.
F
So it was his dad or something like that.
D
I can't remember if his dad or his uncle or a. I really don't remember who it was. But somebody within his circle. So that's our first question. Out of the question. Bowl 1-859-280-2287. We are here in Mount Vernon, the Christian Appalachian Project hunger walk. They just walked past us. 1300 people. A lot of students, high school kids, elementary kids, doing the hunger walk, one of four hunger walks in Kentucky today.
F
Are they coming back around or are they just doing it around the city?
D
I think just doing around the city. And when they go by the school, the kids will go back to class.
F
Okay, cool.
D
But, you know, we. We're all wearing orange. They all wore orange. It's not a Tennessee orange. No, it's the hunger walk orange.
E
It's almost like it's a Halloween orange for red. Orange.
D
Yeah, that's right.
E
Yeah.
D
So we wear orange for the show.
F
Yeah.
D
Maybe that's the only time we ever wear orange, but we can do it in the show. 859-280-2287.
E
Yeah, just for these. These two hours here.
F
Yeah, I wear orange.
D
I want to go back to football for just a second.
F
Okay.
D
A stat that we haven't talked about that I think is kind of underreported. Kentucky's been in the red zone 15 times. They've scored 14 of the 15 times in the red zone. That's even with Calzada at quarterback, that. What do you give credit to that, too?
E
Are we talking. When you say score, we're including field goals.
D
Correct. Field goals or touchdowns. 14 out of 15 times.
E
They've got being disciplined and not getting any penalties. Because the most frustrating way to not score when you're in the red zone is by, you know, just unnecessary penalties. So that tells me that they are disciplined offensively, at least when they're in the red zone and not getting unnecessary penalties to take them out of the red zone and able to score.
D
What about you, Mario?
F
Like last year, we had an issue with that, didn't we? Yeah, we were kind of like in the red zone.
E
We never really, you know, turnovers, fumbles. A lot of different things happened last year.
F
Turnovers. And this year, it looks like they've improved on that, I'll say. I'll tell you one thing. There's from last year to this year, offensive line is a little bit better. Defense is a little bit better, I think.
E
Offensive lines, a lot of it.
F
Yeah, yeah. And quarterback, I mean, our backup quarterback, Cutter Bowley, and then Zach Calzada. They're very close in terms of, like, talent. Cutter's probably a little bit better, in my opinion, but we didn't have that last year. So I think when you think about it, big picture, we've improved on a lot of things.
D
For Kentucky football, what I give credit to their success in the red zone is the offensive line, because they've been able to run the football. They've been giving you a lot of push up front, run the football, move the chains, get closer to a touchdown or an extra point or a field goal. So I, I. Running game and offensive line, I think, plays a big part of this.
E
And I think that South Carolina game coming up, as you sort of alluded to earlier, that is a crazy atmosphere. I would expect it to be run heavy, especially early in the game, to sort of get, oh, yeah, picture Cutter is comfortable. I don't think you want to come out and have him just slinging the ball all over the field, you know, early in the game, maybe get. Get the run game established, get Cutter comfortable, and then at that point, maybe in the second half, a little him. Let him do his thing.
D
You got to think Cutter. Last year, his three games were at Florida.
E
That's a tough situation.
F
At Texas, he played well in Texas.
D
He did. So he's been in three tough environments already. On the road at the Swamp, on the road at Texas, and then the big rivalry game against.
E
And that's why I felt like it was a great time. I mean, again, you don't ever want to see your starting quarterback go down with an injury, but if it were going to happen, that Eastern Michigan game is the perfect opportunity to get them in there against the really bad team to build his confidence up to get him comfortable. And I thought that he looked both confident and comfortable against eastern Michigan.
D
Get his feet wet. He's got two weeks here to go with the ones and practice to get ready for South Carolina. Tough environment down there. To me, I said this on the pre show. I think it's one of the best environments in the sec.
F
You got knocked out.
D
I did get knocked out after the game, but during the game it was, it was really kind of cool.
F
Walk me through it because I've always heard this story, like, why, what happened? Like, were you just talking and somebody just knocked you out or.
D
It was, it was after the game, we're walking to our car. We've left the stadium. We met Dane. The team bus said hi to him. Walk into our car. So it's long after the. The game's over. We have to pick it up after that. Okay, there's your cliffhanger. There's your cliffhanger. Ryan Lemon. Mario Maitland. Shannon the dude. Phone lines are open. 859-280-2287. We'll be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call TJ. He'll make him pay.
E
Now more of Kentucky sports radio presented by Stockton mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
D
All right, welcome back. Ryan Levinshad the dude. Mario Maitland. Here we are live in Mount Vernon, Kentucky. The Christian Appalachian project hunger walk was this morning. They had four hunger walks across the state. Try to raise some money and some funds for some some families in Appalachia that desperately needed the hunger walk. We're here at community trust bank on main street. Community trust make a big sponsor to the Christian Appalachian project. So thank you to them for helping. Helping do that. We got our orange shirts on because orange is the color of fighting hunger. It just when we had the stat that 1 in 5 children go hungry each day. That's sad. That kind of hit me more than anything.
E
That really opens your eyes. And let me just point out to you can go to ChristianApp.org Hunger Walk. If you're not here and you can't be here to physically donate, you can always go to that website, Christian app.org HungerWall.
D
Perfect. So I pick up Mario this morning to head down here. We immediately go to McDonald's.
F
Oh, let me tell you about his McDonald's trip. Shannon, let me tell you about.
D
We have to go to McDonald's first thing every time. I get you, we go to McDonald's.
F
Always goes to McDonald's gets his. Was it French vanilla iced coffee?
D
Yes.
E
Great way to start with a very healthy.
F
That is not healthy.
E
Very healthy breakfast anyways. About 2, 000 calories, but on the.
D
App it's only a dollar, so.
F
Yeah, well, you drink that every morning? Every single morning. We going to the drive. We're going to McDonald's. Right? And Ryan's in a good mood. I'm like, hey, how's your day last night? How'd it go? He's like, oh, it was good. It was good. Yeah, it's like awesome, man. Let's go to McDonald's, you know, the usual. That's where we go. And he's in such a good mood. The drive thru line is. There's no one in the drive through line. So that makes him super happy.
D
I'm like, what a day, what a.
E
Day, what a day.
D
Nobody. The drive thru line.
F
He gives his order, he gets his sausage McMuffin with his French vanilla iced coffee. He goes around, you know, he, he greets the, the lady who gives him.
D
The super nice, super nice la.
F
He gets his sandwich. Sandwich, Shannon. And he's eating it. He takes his second bite and the sandwich falls on the floor.
E
Yeah.
F
I've never seen Ryan that upset. I spent a lot of time with Ryan and I've never seen him that upset.
E
I already know what happens from here. There's no way Ryan just lets a perfectly good sausage. Sausage McMuffin just go to waste.
D
Well, there's more to the story. So this, the sandwich falls in the floor.
E
Where you got like.
D
Dog hair.
E
Dog.
F
Dog hair. Everywhere, Every. Everywhere.
D
Oh, but the sandwich fell into the bag. I mean, it fell right into the McDonald's bag.
E
That's how you know it's good.
D
Perfectly.
E
That's how you know it's gonna be a good day.
D
What kind of day am I having? My McDonald's sandwich falls in the bag. There was no line. And I had a little pouch of pow pow that last night.
E
You could have left that out.
F
Kids that listen to the show. Ryan, you. Come on.
E
So that's three boom chicka pow wows we've already had this morning.
D
But the good luck I'm having today cancels out the bad luck I had yesterday.
F
Oh, what happened yesterday?
E
I thought everything was good with you and yoga girl before we went out.
D
On her birthday date last night. Yeah, I got another speeding ticket.
E
Oh, you were, you got a speeding ticket. You were in such a hurry to see her. You got a speeding ticket.
D
I was so excited to get our event started Going to Rodney's restaurant. Who? I got a speeding ticket right in front of the airport. Like, in between Keeneland and the airport right there. He got me.
E
Well, there goes your endorsement for the Kentucky Department of Highway Safety. You can't be doing that. Ryan, what are you doing?
F
What happened?
D
I wasn't paying attention. I was coming back from Versailles, not paying a lick of attention. He got me for 71 and a 55.
F
He was thinking about yoga girl, thinking.
D
About the big date plans coming up. So you are. Man, that's got to be like my 30th speeding ticket. I mean, I'm not kidding you. He doesn't even drive.
F
You don't drive fast, though.
D
I know it. I just was. I just. Just spaced out. I wasn't paying attention. He.
F
I'll tell you what.
D
He.
F
He spaces out a lot. One time.
E
That ain't good if you're driving.
F
One time, we were in Cincinnati. We're coming back from the Reds game.
E
Yeah.
F
And it was a red light, and I'm pretty sure Ryan's seen it, but he's just spaced out, and he's just driving, and I'm not going to say anything to him. And he's going about 45 miles per hour. And there's a car at the other intersection. In the middle of the intersection, Ryan is about to run the red light, about to kill me and my life, and go, go, like, what are you doing?
D
Right?
E
You're a brave.
F
Why are you spacing?
E
You're a brave man, actually allowing him to drive you around. Like, if you were coming down. You should have been the driver. You should have been driving Ryan.
F
I enjoy his car rides. He's fun. He's a funny guy.
E
I mean, I like. I've actually been in the car with him, too, when he got a speeding ticket.
F
Oh, you have?
E
A few years ago. Do you remember that?
D
No.
E
Oh, yeah, yeah.
D
You were in the car with me.
E
Yes. It was one of those KSR Safe Summer Driving Tours.
F
You don't remember. Hey.
E
So safely, he got a speeding ticket, the car. The cop wanted to pull him over and compliment him on how great of a driver.
D
Here's what stinks. In a couple months, the last ticket I got was going to fall off my record.
E
It's right back there.
D
Now the clock just starts again, right?
E
You got to be 12 months of good driving.
D
I think I'm going to go to defensive driving school to get my points back.
E
You should be the teacher of that class.
D
This will be the seventh time I've went to Defensive driving. You already know I'm a six time graduate of defensive driving school.
F
This 17 time I've never gotten.
D
You have to go to get your points back. Are you going to, you know, keep your. My insurance at least being somewhat reasonable. It's ridiculously high right now.
E
So you got six diplomas of defensive driving class.
D
Okay, let's move on. 859-280-2287. Let's just get a call up, then we'll draw our next question. Who we got? Liam, Rob and Harlan. Rob and Harlan. Go ahead, Rob. Hey gentlemen.
F
Good morning. Just got a quick question and then.
D
I'll hang up with you guys. Answer. Now, realistically, Kentucky could very well lose every game for the rest of the season. But here's my question.
E
No, no, come on.
D
They're gonna beat Tennessee.
F
Negative.
D
Okay, but if this happens, but they beat Tennessee, do they still keep stoops?
E
So even if they lost, so you're saying thanks for the goal.
D
They're saying if they just beat Tennessee Tech and Tennessee, does that save his job? He ended 4 and 8.1sec win.
E
Yeah, I mean I, I don't think that I, I don't think back to.
D
Back four win seasons.
E
I don't think Barnhart would get rid of them though because of that buyout. Number one.
D
That's a big factor in it.
E
Now if he won three, I think you'd have to just. Yeah, three. You know what, that's just completely. Three is the number and four is not acceptable. So don't get me wrong, the schedule.
F
It'S, the schedule is just tough, man.
E
It is, but it's never going to get easier. No, it's not. And we're about to go to nine games in the sec, so it won't get any easier. But, but if he were to get four this year, I would say he would still get one more year. And then, and then after that, if it happens, then, then it's over.
F
Depends on how he loses too. Like if he's just getting like people are coming in there just like blowing us out, then. All right, if it's like he's competitive in these games then like okay, like.
D
You know, last year they only won four, but they had Georgia on the ropes. They had a chance to beat Georgia, couldn't close the deal. So Tennessee, many consider to be a playoff bound team this year if they're able to beat Tennessee.
E
You know, I'm still optimistic about this team. I really am. I mean I haven't seen anything other than like the, the poor in game management. You know, during the Ole Miss game, we're only three games in, so I haven't really seen anything that would make me think that the wheels are going to completely fall off for this team. So I. I still feel like it's very, very doable to get to six wins.
D
What's the. The stat? The last 11 SEC home games, they've only won three. They're like three and eight in their last 11 SEC home games.
F
I think it was like two. We won two games.
E
Yeah. Whatever it is, it's not good. But. But, I mean, this team, I still believe that they can turn this thing around. And I believe even more now with Cutter Bowley that this. This could be a good team, a good team compared to what we were talking about going into the season. You know, a lot of people were saying 4 and 8, right?
D
You done?
F
Yeah, I think he's done.
E
Yeah, I'm done.
D
We got to go to the Bowl. All right, Mario, you asked a question right here. Yeah. You pull out your next. The next question submitted by people here in the audience. They, you know, we never get to participate in our show. They come out to watch the show, don't get to participate. So we got a question here for him. What's this one?
F
Okay, did. I'm trying to read the handwriting here. Did Oscar have a vision of losing.
E
To St. Peter's oh, he said he did. What wasn't it. Was it a vision of losing to St. Peter's or a vision of a plane crash or something?
D
Okay, well, that does kind of sound familiar. He did have some kind of vision of catastrophe, disaster right before the St. Peter's game.
F
Wasn't he, like, on a plane or something like that? Is that what happened?
D
I'm kind of with Shane. I think it had to do with the plane crash.
E
Yeah, I don't think it was anything to do with St. Peter's I think it was like some sort of tragedy.
D
Yes.
E
Like, if I'm on the team and I hear that I'm going. I don't know if I want to go.
D
And I think it was like the night before they played St. Peter. I'm not mistaken.
F
I don't know if it was like he was on a plane and they were flying and then he freaked out. Like, I don't.
E
I don't know.
F
I've heard multiple stories. I don't know.
E
I think that was sort of along the lines of what it was of them having a, I guess, vision, premonition or something.
D
Gloom and doom, disaster.
E
Yeah.
D
Well, I remember Matt. I forget who Matt said is. Somebody told him before the game. Cal looks scared to death.
E
Oh, yeah, yeah.
D
So something about.
E
It was Iron Eagle. Who was.
D
That's who it was. That's who it was.
E
Never seen Cal so uptight. Why is he uptight? What's going on for St. Peter's right.
D
I think maybe Oscar's premonition maybe kind of spooked him a little bit.
F
He got a vision.
D
He knew.
E
Just a bad aura around that entire.
D
Dude. I still can't believe they lost to St. Petersburg. I mean, even think about it now, how in the world do they lose to St. Peter Oakland?
F
I thought that team was Jack Okey. Yeah.
E
Made him a household name.
D
Why not put somebody to stop that same play? They kept running the pick and let him throwing up.
E
That was. That was the most damning thing about Caliperi that I have heard from anybody. And that's when we had. Remember, it was the. Pardon my take, guys.
D
Yeah.
E
We're filling in on ksr and they had Jack Goki on just to troll all the Kentucky fans.
D
Yeah.
E
And Jack Golke said, I thought that they would make some sort of switch or some sort of adjustment, adjustments. And that never happened.
D
Never happened.
E
And he just went off on Kentucky and Oakland.
D
Beats Kentucky when the guy hitting all the threes admits they didn't do anything. They didn't make any adjustments, any changes or nothing.
E
Yep.
F
Great coaching job, don't you think?
D
If he come across the screen one time, somebody just put an elbow right in his chest, knock him to the floor. Maybe he would think a little twice about coming off that pick and jacking up another three, like so.
E
Of all the criticisms I've heard of Caliperi, Jack Goalkee on the show that day, I think that was the biggest dude.
D
I still can't believe they lost St. Peter's and Oakland. I just can't believe.
F
We had a good team that year. Tata Washington. Who else?
D
Well, the good. The game. They lost Oakland. They had a good team.
F
Yeah, that team was even better. Yep.
D
Okay. Thanks for depressing me. All right. 859-280-2287. Clark Puppet Shop phone number 859280. Cats. Ryan, Drew is maybe coming back tomorrow.
E
Okay.
D
He's. He's a maybe for tomorrow. You know, they're having a tough time kind of dealing with the loss of Manny. So all prayers up to Drew. So he's strong. Maybe for tomorrow.
E
And we are tomorrow at Wild Eggs.
D
Wild Eggs in Tate's Creek. This is the new Wild Eggs in Tates Creek. Course, they're the official breakfast of ksr. The food out there is outstanding, so hopefully have a good crowd there tomorrow. You'll be there. Shannon will be there, Mario will be there, but Billy and Matt are still out.
F
Yeah.
E
Yeah.
D

Now, you didn't finish the South Carolina story where you got sucker punched. You said you were going to finish it. We never got the, the.
D
The.
E
The ending of it. So tell us, tell us how that happened.
D
Okay. The game was over. We met Dana. The bus, talked to him for a minute. Then we' our car. So we're away from the stadium.
F
Yeah.
D
We come up to an intersection and there's a group of fraternity guys, maybe five or six of them, and they start mouthing about because we've got our blue on. And they started making fun of Dane's mom and Dane's Grandma. I'm, like, really making fun of them. So we kind of stepped in, like, get them to calm down. Then there'd be some pushing, some shoving, some mouthing. I literally remember I got in the middle between a couple guys and, like, had my hands. You can't see me, kind of separate them.
E
Yeah.
D
And some guy, I never saw him, came from my blind side, my left side, hit me right in the face. Next thing I know, I'm on the ground. I didn't. I never saw him. I didn't know what happened.
F
You were trying to break it up.
D
I literally have my hands like this.
F
Got knocked out.
D
Bam. Now I'm out.
E
When you. Were you physically pushing them? Yes. Okay.
D
Yes.
E
Now, here's the interesting thing about this story. The more and more you tell it, the more physical you get.
D
Yeah.
E
Because I thought the first time you said you didn't touch anybody and didn't really say anything.
D
I think I did. I, like, I was like. I was going like this, like, okay, get away, get away, get away.
F
That changes things.
E
See, I don't know. I thought you were completely.
D
But the dude I had my hands on didn't hit me. It was some dude from over here.
E
Yeah.
F
Doesn't matter.
E
It still shouldn't have happened. He still should not have.
D
So next thing I know, I'm on the ground and I get up, and I guess the police officer talked to me. I said I was fine. I'm not gonna give him the satisfaction. Think he hurt me?
E
I would if I would have prosecuted that guy to the fullest degree.
D
I have no memory of talking to police officer at all.
F
Were you bleeding or anything?
D
No. No.
F
Okay.
E
So do you have any lingering effects?
D
No. No. I went. Obviously, I went to the dentist. Dr. Cook, she spells it funny. Koch.
E
I've heard.
D
And she. Because my teeth were hur. Maybe he jarred a couple teeth, got knocked loose or something. He said, no, you're fine, but you got a crack in your jaw.
E
Oh, my God.
D
To another doctor. And they. He looked at it, goes. You know, it's not displaced. It's. You're fine. It's just going to be sore for a while and then.
F
Can't believe frat guys hit old.
E
See, you still had to go. You still had to go to a doctor. You still had to get a doctor bill out of it.
D
Yes.
E
And that frat boy should have paid for it.
F
Picking on the old man.
D
Should have called T.J. he'll make him pay.
E
That's right.
D
859-28-0228, 7. Let's get another question. Okay, it's my turn, I guess, to pull out a question here.
E
All right, what we got?
D
Here's the question from somebody in the audience. What is your favorite remote location?
E
Mount Vernon, of course. Of course.
D
Yeah, yeah. Mount Vernon, Kentucky Community Trust bank for the Christian Appalachian Hunter Walk.
E
What'd you think?
D
What would be your second maybe favorite remote location?
E
Oh, my goodness. There are so many of them out there. Any place that feeds us well or, you know, gives us prizes, things to take away from from the remote at the end. Whiskey thief is always fun.
D
That's a good one.
E
That one always comes to mind. I'm sure there's going to be somebody listening, going, well, what about this one? That I'm going to completely forget about. But that one, I think cornbread hemp is always fun going on their hemp farm.
D
It is just a couple of weeks ago. What about you, Mario?
F
I like all the remotes with a lot of people. I like the big crowds like country boy.
E
Country boy brewing.
F
Pretty big crowd. Cornbread's always fun because it's just the scenics like. Like the scenic view that we see at country Boy at the farm was just us.
E
Us out there with a bunch of hemp.
F
Yeah.
E
And it's good smells, you know, out there. And you like the smell? Oh, yeah, yeah. You know.
F
What about you?
D
My favorite one is probably. We don't do it as much anymore. It's Conley Bottom. We used to go to Conley Bottom every summer, do it on the dock. Never usually let me jump in the water.
E
Yeah. One year Ryan stripped down and. And just jumped into the lake.
D
I did. Did. They held up a big couple towels and I took my shorts off, put on some swim trunks right there on the dock. What? Yeah, I wanted to get in the water.
F
You took your shorts off?
D
I did.
E
We used to be, you know, we used to get kind of dicey on KSR back in the day. Ryan just takes his shirt off now.
F
Okay.
D
But I did.
F
So it used to be a lot worse.
D
I used to go completely down to put on some swimsuits so I could jump in the water. All right. 859-280228 said we do need to update a story we talked about yesterday. Sidney McLaughlin, who we'd said not only holds the record in the 400 hurdles, broke the American record in the 400 meter dash. That was in the semifinals. She ran the finals last night, broke her own record again.
F
You can't stop this.
D
I mean, she is the fastest Woman ever.
E
Yeah.
D
She. In the two toughest events. She now has the American record in both of them.
E
It's amazing. I mean, I felt like she's just running her own race out there. Like, the other. Other participants aren't even in the same.
D
Yeah.
E
Category or even level of. Of her just because of how fast she is. She's got to be. I mean, we've said this before, but she's got to be the greatest athlete in Kentucky history.
D
I don't think there's a question.
F
When do you put her as, like, in the conversation. As one of the greatest athletes of all time? Like, when is that happening of all time?
D
Well, you know, Tyson Gay, who is from Lexington, is the fastest American. If it wasn't for Usain Bolt, he would have been the fastest man in the world. Usain Bolt just happened to come along right when Tyson Gay came along. Sydney, she is Usain Bolt right now. So nobody touching her. And she's. I mean, she's still really young. She's gonna get faster, bigger, stronger, and continue to break her own records.
E
That's the thing. Like, it's one thing to break somebody else's record when you've already broken the record, and then you come back and break your own record.
D
That's right.
E
It just shows that she's. She's improving every year.
D
So we are very proud of her. Being that she wore the blue. Hard to believe she was walking around campus. Oh, yeah. For a year, but, yeah, students would go crazy. No doubt.
F
They go crazy.
D
All right, we want to remind everybody, tonight at KS Bar and Grill, it is Thursday night football. We got the. The Bills and the Dolphins.
F
Dolphins, yeah.
D
Bills and Dolphins. Thursday night football. I got. I'll be there. We got some more tickets to give away. Of course. The food out there is fantastic. So come on out. Thursday night football.
F
A lot of drink specials, too, Ryan.
D
A lot of drink specials.
E
Got volleyball tonight, too.
D
Volleyball tonight against Kentucky. Going to Louisville to play at the Yum Center.
E
That's right.
D
So I hope we get some blue to sneak in to watch that one as well. That Louisville volleyball, I think they're top 10.
E
They're number three.
D
Oh, my goodness.
E
Yeah.
D
I mean, how many top 10 teams is Kentucky going to play?
E
I love it. Greg Skinner's like, let's take on the world. We'll play every. Every top 25 team we can. Most of them have been top 10.
D
So they played number one Nebraska. They played number two, Penn State. Now they're playing number three, Louisville one.
F
All the smoke, man. I love it.
D
Well, when else do we talk about UK volleyball? Good for him. He's got it in the forefront. And they're good. They're really, really good. So check out that game tonight. Host: Ryan Lemond, with Shannon The Dude, Mario Maitland (Matt Jones reporting from South Africa)
Location: Live broadcast from Main Street, Mount Vernon, Kentucky, during the 14th Annual Christian Appalachian Project Hunger Walk
This episode of Kentucky Sports Radio (KSR) offers a lively, community-centered broadcast from Mount Vernon, Kentucky, as the crew participates in the Hunger Walk to benefit the Christian Appalachian Project. The show blends local color, humor, and sports talk—focusing heavily on Kentucky football’s bye-week storylines, classic recruiting drama, and listener interaction through a popular “question bowl.” Additionally, listeners get travel updates from Matt in South Africa and hear memorable anecdotes and quick-hitting Kentucky sports bulletins.
Event Atmosphere:
The show broadcasts as 1,300 walkers (including many local students in orange shirts—the color to fight hunger) pass by, raising funds and awareness for food insecurity in Appalachian Kentucky.
Local Flavor:
The crew reminisces about Mount Vernon—highlighting its traffic quirks, small-town Hallmark-movie vibe, and the musical heritage of Renfro Valley.
Stoops’ Bye Week Track Record:
The hosts delve into Coach Mark Stoops’ historically poor post-bye-week performance.
Adjustments & Hopes:
This week, Stoops is changing tactics—going heavier in the weight room and practices, hoping for a turnaround.
QB Discussion – Cutter Bowley:
The hosts express renewed optimism around backup QB Cutter Bowley, noting his positive attitude, leadership, and prior tough road experiences.
Throughout the show, the crew answers random audience- and listener-submitted questions:
Recruiting Drama – Lamar Wilkerson (21:52–23:22):
Ryan recounts how Kentucky lost a key recruit overnight when Indiana made a better NIL and coaching offer.
Coaching Security – Stoops’ Future if UK Struggles (32:59–35:23):
A caller asks if Stoops would stay if UK finishes 4–8 but beats Tennessee. Hosts agree the buyout is likely too big to oust Stoops for one bad year, but another poor season would be critical.
Oscar Tshiebwe’s “Vision” Before St. Peter’s Loss (35:36–38:05):
Listeners ask about rumors of Oscar’s foreboding vision before the infamous NCAA tournament upset—hosts recall discussion of a "catastrophe," possibly a plane crash, and muse about the nervous vibes around the game.
Favorite Remote Location (44:53–46:35):
Hosts nostalgically recount their favorite KSR live remotes—current shoutout to Mount Vernon, fond memories of Conley Bottom, Country Boy Brewing, and the scenic visits to hemp farms.
McDonald’s Mishap & Defensive Driving:
Mario tells the story of Ryan’s sausage McMuffin landing in the (thankfully, clean) McDonald’s bag. The crew jokes about Ryan’s prolific record for speeding tickets and multiple stints at defensive driving school.
Getting Sucker Punched in South Carolina:
Ryan finally tells the infamous story (as promised) of how he got knocked out by a frat boy after a heated post-game exchange, resulting in a cracked jaw.
Red Zone Offense:
The Cats have scored on 14 of 15 red zone trips this season; hosts credit improved O-line play and a disciplined approach.
UK Women’s Track Star – Sydney McLaughlin:
Ryan and Shannon celebrate her breaking her own national records in the 400m hurdles and 400m dash, musing about her claim to “greatest athlete in Kentucky history.” [46:57–47:59]
Upcoming Events:
| Timestamp | Quote | Speaker/Description | |-----------|-------|---------------------| | 04:38 | “One in five children goes hungry every day in Appalachia in Kentucky.” | Ryan Lemond | | 06:38 | “Every small town in Kentucky kind of looks alike. Have you ever seen like a Hallmark movie?” | Mario Maitland | | 17:55 | “Mark Stoops… usually doesn’t do well after the bye week.” | Mario Maitland | | 21:05 | “He’s not really all about him… He cares about his teammates… You can tell that when you watch him.” | Mario Maitland on Cutter Bowley | | 22:27 | “We had him for like maybe, what, eight or nine hours. And then it switched on you.” | Mario Maitland (on Lamar Wilkerson) | | 32:27 | “This’ll be the seventh time I’ve went to Defensive driving. I’m a six-time graduate of defensive driving school.” | Ryan Lemond | | 36:54 | “I still can't believe they lost to St. Peter’s… How in the world do they lose to St. Peter and Oakland?” | Ryan Lemond | | 43:18 | “Some guy, I never saw him, came from my blind side… hit me right in the face… I’m on the ground.” | Ryan Lemond (SC incident story) | | 47:21 | “She’s gotta be the greatest athlete in Kentucky history.” | Shannon The Dude (on Sydney McLaughlin) |
The episode brims with classic KSR banter—good-natured ribbing, Kentucky pride, heartfelt community advocacy, and open, candid chats about UK sports. The hosts are conversational, self-deprecating, and bring in both humor and empathy, especially when discussing Appalachian hunger and local youth.
