Nmlsconsumeraccess.Org welcome to hour two of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
All right, welcome back. Hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio. Ryan Lemon, Drew Franklin Shannon, the dude up at Fort Thomas Highlands High School in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, sitting outside Drew on the sidewalk in front of the school. It was a little rainy when we first got here, but the sun has come out because it is September 22nd. And we're talking to the number 22 man himself, Tayton Lorenzen, son of Jared Lorenzen, also war number 22 man. I'm telling you, it's so cool for me to see how you've grown up and not just be this football guy, but to be a great young man. You know, like I said, we've known you since you were a little guy. He always called you Little Man. You know, Little man's got a, got a tournament this weekend. Little man's got a football game this weekend. So I know he's super proud when he sees the person you become, not just the football player but the person you're becoming.
Tayton Lorenzen
Yeah. My main goal in life is to act exactly like he did towards me, at least because he was always the most humble guy possible. He never said anything bad unless I did something wrong. I think he had a. He evenly distributed his being humble and telling people when he's right. So I don't know. I think being his son, I have to live up to a lot, but I think I can.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
You feel that?
Tayton Lorenzen
Yeah, I do. But I think as long as I be myself, I can carry that on as much as possible.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
So do you feel that Just because you're here at Highlands. He was such a star here. He wore number 22. You know you're number 22. So, I mean, do you feel that every time you walk on that football field out there?
Tayton Lorenzen
Yeah, it's definitely a feeling for sure. In the moment, not so much, but like when I'm sitting here talking to you guys, I start getting that feeling in the game. There's so much adrenaline. I can't think about anything except for the game.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
But I want to hear more about this Highlands experience. We kind of got up against a hard break there. You were saying great things about the school here. And then I had some friends text in that are local. They're telling me, like, people tailgate in front yards and like, even it's not just in the stadium, the whole town is pretty much shuts down for Friday nights.
Tayton Lorenzen
Yeah, the whole town loves Friday nights. Actually, right over there in that parking lot is our tailgate parking lot. And they walk into here from the games. They all line up on the Broadway or the Avenue of Champions and we walk down into the game. It's just. It's that feeling. Friday Night Lights. We're about to play a game and it gets everybody ready to play.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
And it's not just here when you guys go on the road. And like when your dad was playing, him and Derek Smith were at the in their prime. It was like a traveling circus, man. Every time they go into town, everybody wanted to see those two guys play.
Tayton Lorenzen
Yeah, like, we travel to Cooper and our fans, our community is there immediately. They're tailgating there. They find a place and our student section is really good. It's probably top five in the state for sure. Like how we traveled to Boyle county also. They were all there. That's two and a half hours away just for a football game. And that's how much they love it here. And that's the spirit we bring to Kentucky football.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
What about some of your stuff? Like, you know, I got to know him so well with our football podcast, just about his pregame rituals and things. Do you have like a. Like a pre game meal you stick to or any routine or any superstitions that. That you could share with us?
Tayton Lorenzen
I feel like every time I have a superstition, I. I get off of it anyway, so I just do whatever until the game. I have no, always pre game. This superstition. None of that. None of that. I literally just get ready and go play a game.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Just get locked in.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Did you grow up living and dying with Kentucky? Like, he Did. I mean, he was living die with every long after his career was over, he's living and dying with every play. After they beat Florida, he called in the postgame show and teared up, started crying. He was so happy they'd finally beat Florida. Are you that emotional? Do you get into it that much?
Tayton Lorenzen
Not as much as he did, obviously. I don't think anybody gets into it as much as he did. I'm definitely a UK fan, for sure, but there's a line between Die Hard and UK Fan, and I don't know if I'm gonna cross that line, but there's definitely.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
He crossed it. He absolutely crossed it. He was Die Hard all the way.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Do you feel a connection to the Giants since he won a ring there? Do you. Do you support them? I know it's a little different with them not being locally.
Tayton Lorenzen
Yeah, if I see him on TV or something like that, I'll root for him, but there's really not a team that I'm Die Hard for in the NFL, at least actually college either. I don't really like Die Hard anybody, but, yeah, I'm a UK fan, and I do like the Giants.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Do you ever get his super bowl ring out? I mean, the dude's got a Super bowl ring.
Tayton Lorenzen
Yeah, I've seen it. I've seen it a few times, but we keep it locked away and safe because they don't trust me with it. I don't trust myself with it.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Well, we asked him that one time after he got it, and we're just saying, what are you doing? He goes, man, I'm not wearing Nanner out somewhere. I don't want to lose. I want somebody to steal it. I've got it locked up safe where I know exactly where it is at all times.
Tayton Lorenzen
Yeah, that's it. I don't trust myself either.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
What about his state championship rings?
Tayton Lorenzen
I actually have seen one of his state championship rings. We were out to dinner with one of his teammates from high school, and he brought it out, and that's the only time I've ever seen it. Yeah, they're pretty cool to see.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
They're very cool.
Tayton Lorenzen
Yes.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Some of your coaches and teachers here already told us before you came down that it's not just the look and the number. You have the personality and a little bit of sense of humor, too, because Jared would always make us laugh. Are you kind of, I hate to say, cutting up in the locker room because you're serious, but do you kind of have that big personality, too, around your teammates?
Tayton Lorenzen
Definitely do. Yeah. I Have a lot of friends and we joke around a lot and I like to have a good time with my friends. That's bigger than anything for me is having a good time with my friends outside of school, getting away from everything, and they help a lot with how I act in the real world.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
You know, you mentioned you watch his. His mixtape all the time. What. What's your favorite play that he did? Because there's. There's so many. What's the one that you think is your favorite play?
Tayton Lorenzen
I know everybody wants me to say the behind the back throw or behind the head throw against Georgia.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Georgia.
Tayton Lorenzen
My favorite play is probably when they were playing Louisville and he had like a 40 something yard run.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
You know that was his first. That from scrimmage?
Tayton Lorenzen
Yeah, that's. It was his first snap and.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
And he threw. He threw the ball up in the air. If they tackled him. Yeah, dude, I got goosebumps right now when you saying that.
Tayton Lorenzen
It's either that one or I think it was maybe against Mississippi State. He was running left and he ran out of bounds and like did the safe thing. Yeah, that was pretty cool too. Or where the hell y' all going?
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
You're gonna miss a hell of a game when everyone's leaving and going to the big overtimes. We keep focusing on him. And you have a lot of football left to play. But do you have a favorite highlight? I've already seen a few this year online. So do you have a favorite moment of yours or a play that. Even if it's middle school, is there. Is there something that stands out where you were having a lot of fun out there? Any over the head throws from. From you?
Tayton Lorenzen
No. No, not yet.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Your coach got a reaction out of that behind you there. I don't think he's ready for those.
Tayton Lorenzen
Favorite play ever or favorite play this year?
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Either one. Just a play that stands out where you thought, you know, that.
Tayton Lorenzen
Okay, I'll go. My favorite play ever is the Northern Kentucky Football League championship against the Bandits. And I roll right and I'm throwing it to my running back, but I'm getting tackled. And he breaks a few tackles. I completed the pass. He ran 40 yards for a touchdown. And my dad. First time I ever seen my dad run, ever. He ran off the. He ran onto the field and like gave me a chest bump and I fell on my back and it was. It was. It was a good memory for sure.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
So do they. Does coach Spire back here, does he let you throw the ball or you just run the ball all the time?
Tayton Lorenzen
He lets Me throw it. But I think the team succeeds if we're running it. And if we're running it every play and we're not getting stopped, I think we're just going to keep running the ball until they stop it.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Because you were a quarterback a lot growing up.
Tayton Lorenzen
Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. I've always had an arm, but I think when I run the ball, I don't know, it's just like it's worked and we haven't changed anything. There's no reason to if it's working.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
So what I've seen of you running the ball, you see more of the I'm going to run through you type.
Tayton Lorenzen
Than I'm definitely not going to run around anybody.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Your goal on run against Douglas and many others I've seen online, like old dad, it took several people to try to bring you down.
Tayton Lorenzen
Yeah, I'm not. Again, I'm definitely not running around anybody. So it's either a stiff arm or I'm going to run through you. That's. That's all I can try and do.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
What do you do when you score touchdown? You got a touchdown dance or a celebration?
Tayton Lorenzen
The first time I've ever done a touchdown dance was my first touchdown against Ryle and I'll probably never do one again. But a bunch of people were telling me to do it because it was one of these TikTok things or whatever. So I did it just to make everybody happy and that was it.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I was actually about to ask a question about Derek Smith who just walked up. Yeah, I mean he and Jared were, you know, hand in hand coming up through here. Do you have like a version of a Derek? Do you have like a childhood friend where you are just playing every sport? Sounds like you're popular. You might have 10 of them, not want to name drop them. But is there. Do you have some special connections like that one?
Tayton Lorenzen
Probably his nephew Aiden Duncan is up there for sure. Me and Gabe Williams have a pretty good connection on the field. Probably. Yeah. The third one would probably be Kale Harris. He's number 13. He was a receiver. We've always been best friends, but not to name job. But those are, those are my three really good friends. Chase Jacob also, but there's so many I don't want to start naming.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah, yeah.
Tayton Lorenzen
So.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Well, listen man, whether you know it or not, you got an entire state pulling for you, all the big blue nation watching you, pulling for you, wishing you nothing but the best on the football field and in life. So I hope, I hope at some point. You can feel the love that they have for you because they loved your dad. Yeah.
Tayton Lorenzen
It's not having that feeling on me just means the world to me and all it can do is make me happy and embrace it because it's not going to go away until I die. So it's great having the state behind me and where like wherever I go in the states behind me. It's great.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
And coach, if we could maybe you get up big in a game, can we draw up? It could be on the goal line. Maybe let him throw a left handed touchdown. It doesn't have to go for just a couple yards, maybe just set one up. Oh, you have thrown left handed.
Tayton Lorenzen
Yeah, it was a freshman game.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
No doubt you are Jared Lorenzen, son. There's, there's something magical about that name and that number on the back of a Highland jersey. And dude, we're proud of you. Keep grinding, keep, keep playing good and we'll keep an eye on you. And you got great things ahead of you, I know, down the road.
Tayton Lorenzen
So thank you so much.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Thank you, brother. Appreciate you. All right, we'll take our break. Come back Ryan and Drew and Shannon here on Kentucky Sports Radio.

Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
We just finished our interview with Tayden Lorenzo. We had to let him go because it's lunchtime. Yeah, the boy doesn't want to miss lunchtime. He's a growing teenage boy.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
That's right. And he had to get to class. Jared never missed class.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
So joining us now, a guy walked up while we're doing the interview. We said when Jared Lorenzen and Derek Smith were here at Fort Thomas Highlands. It was must see football, must see basketball. You guys were like a traveling road show. Derek. Derek Smith joins us now. But like I told Tayden, there's something magical about that name, Lorenzen, and that number 22 up here at Fort Thomas Highlands.
Derek Smith
No question about it. You know, again, I was here for the game Friday night, and my nephew plays on the team as well. So I try to come back for some games. And geez, it's just. It's amazing to watch him play and see, you know, I just remember growing up again. Jared and I grew up from literally when we were like five years old, playing football, baseball, basketball together.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
And.
Derek Smith
And so I got an up close and personal look at Jared and everything that he did. And so then I'm standing in the stands watching, you know, and every. His mannerisms, everything is just a replica of Jared when he gets tired. He holds his hands the same way on his hips, you know, and Jared would be tired. The ball was in his hands for every play, half of his touchdowns. He didn't even celebrate, you know what I mean? Because he was working so hard. And that happened Friday night. I mean, I'm looking at my dad and I'm like, he didn't even celebrate the touchdown because just he's a workhorse, you know, He. He understands what the assignment is, and he's just. He's so much like his. His father. It's crazy. And it really is. It's a blessing for me, and I have a lot of gratitude to kind of experience that whole thing and then be able to come back here for the game and watch him do it.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Say that about the hands on the hip. I can picture him doing that.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Me too. Yep.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
We asked. We asked Tayden this, and I'm sure you've known Tayton Bryson, who was born, I assume, but was there a moment when he was young, before you got to where you're just used to seeing a little Jared out there where you're like, wait a minute, this is a spitting image of his dad.
Derek Smith
Yeah. Pee wee football. Jared and I had a golf outing once, and we. He came to pick me up. We were playing at a Highlands basketball golf outing. He came to pick me up and we came. We came to the game first for a little bit before we ran out. And. And yeah, I mean, at that moment, I was just like, oh, my God, this guy. Geez Louise. I mean, it was just. But it's. It just makes sense, you know? I mean, you know, I would Say Jared, he would say, there was this God given ability that I was given, you know, and I'm just glad that I was able to go out and do these things. And I think it's been passed to Tayden, no question about it.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
You know, he kind of talked about. He. He feels that. He feels that Lorenzen mystique even when he puts on that jersey.
Derek Smith
Oh, absolutely. I mean, look at this, right? I mean, he's just, you know, Jared and I didn't have KSR come up to radio stations with us, so, you know, it's like his father laid the groundwork and his father did all this work and did so many great stuff in the community and for Thomas and in Kentucky. And so I think it's only appropriate that Tayton gets to kind of swim in those riches a little bit, you know, because that's what you do for as a parent, right? You want to set something up and hand it off to your child and allow them to flourish. And I think that's what he's doing. So, you know, I think he'd be very thankful for that.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
We're focusing a lot on Jared, but, you know, you had quite the athletic career right beside him just over here at Highlands. Same thing I said to Tatum. But now Highlands is kind of getting back, considered a top 10 and maybe top five in some places around the state, trying to get back to that winning tradition and get some trophies. Do you feel some pride, especially with you having a nephew on the team that it's got your nephew Tayden, and then kind of trying to get Hollins back to where it was?
Derek Smith
Absolutely. All the old guys, all the old teammates, we all came Friday night and we were hanging out, watching and, you know, it was the atmosphere, everything just sort of took us back, you know, and, God, I can't believe it was 25 years ago. Sometimes I have a hard time dealing with that. But. But yes, you know, we're. We're always supportive of anything we can do for Highlands and, and for the community here and obviously for the program. And we want football and basketball. You know, my nephew played on the state championship basketball team. So my nephew now Aiden, is a senior right now. His older brother Austin was a member of the state championship basketball team. So, you know, the guys were all down and rupp. We went down there and, you know, so we were like, you guys took away our mantle of the best Highlands. We still feel like we might be the best Highlands football team ever, but I don't think we can say we're the Best Highlands basketball team ever because we were one step short of that State championship.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
You guys get to the semifinals or the finals?
Derek Smith
We lost to the. We lost in the finals my sophomore year to Louisville Eastern, and then Scott county beat us in an epic final Four games. Semifinal game my junior year, and then my senior year, we got upset in the first round.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Oh, yeah, we were getting a tour of the hall of Fame there. And to your point, I even took this photo of you and Jared have your jerseys, and Rossett Nelner, few others have your jerseys framed in the basketball gym. But the boys state champion banner is much bigger. They're pretty proud of that.
Derek Smith
Rightfully so. Rightfully so.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Yeah.
Derek Smith
I think our best banner up there was just ninth region. Ninth region champions. You know, we wore that honor. But, yeah, we. You know what? And by the way, that night was amazing. I was honored when Joe's parent or when Jared's parents asked me to give the speech for Jared for that night on the hall of Fame, you know, and it was probably the hardest thing I've ever done. You know, it was still sort of raw in the moment, but I'm really glad I did it. At first, I'm like, I don't think I can do it. And then when I did it, I'm like, I'm glad I did that, you know, because just like I said, you. You know, it's. Here we are 25 years, and I think back all the time, I'm like, man, it was really the glory days for us, you know, God, we. We just. We lived in the moment, and we were able to do so many great things. And, you know, and everybody thinks about us with football and basketball, but we had a lot of fun playing baseball, too. We were really good at baseball. We decided our junior year not to play baseball. And the baseball coach here just about wanted to fight us. I never will forget that.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
But.
Derek Smith
But we just, you know, it was just such an amazing journey through all that stuff. And like I said, I just, you know, I sit up in the stands, I'm here right now, and I just look back with gratitude of just being able to be a part of it and get to know Jared and be his friend for so long. And, you know, now I get to see his son do the same thing. And so hopefully one day I'll see my son do the same thing, you.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Know, so, you know, when you guys, like I said this earlier, when you were. You and Jared were playing, you'd go on the road, the place was packed. You're like, A traveling roadshow. Everybody wanted to come see Jerry Lorenzen and Derek Smith play football, basketball, whatever it was. And I tried to tell that to Tayden. I said, you don't understand that the entire state, Big Blue nation got your back. They love you because of what your dad, the joy he brought them. Tayden said he kind of understands it, but do you think he fully grasped the love that this state has for the Lorenzan name?
Derek Smith
You know, I. Are you able to do that at 17? You know what I mean? I think you. You probably start to get an. Get an understanding of the moment and the gravity of it all. But I also think, like, he's just got to be a kid. He's got to be 17 years old, and he's got to have fun with his. With his teammates. He's got to be able to. To be Tayden, you know, and, And I think he wears the badge for, you know, his father's legacy really well. But I also would just say, you know, like, I think he really. I think it's really important probably for him to make his own legacy, you know, and for him to do his own thing.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Good point.
Derek Smith
And so I think it's really a mixture of both for me with Tayden is, you know, I mean, it's a spitting image, you know, when he puts his pants on and he goes out play, like I said, his mannerisms, I'm just. I'm like, I'm watching Jared all over again and. But, you know, he's creating his own aura, and I think that's going to be a traveling road show. Does it help that his father laid the groundwork? Yes. I do believe that if he wasn't Jared's son, he'd still have a road show, because he's that good.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
So you and Jared obviously went on to Kentucky together. I assume you're keeping up with teams. Talk a little current ball, how we feel. I got South Carolina coming up.
Derek Smith
I was, I was there last weekend. I was there in the Ole Miss game. I mean, so two weeks ago. Yeah, I, you know, I think they're doing great. You know, as a former player, I see things and I'm just like, oh, my God, you know, just line up sometimes right into the first half and. Yeah, and so, you know, there, There are times where I get a little frustrated as a former player, because you. You remember those things and you remember how important it was, you know, and then when it kind of goes the other way, but then I'm like, the fan comes right back into me, you know, and they do something really well. And I'm celebrating like everybody else, you know, and I'm like, this is how it felt when they watched us play, you know, but, yeah, I think the South Carolina game is going to be so important. It is just crucial. There's no reason why we can't win that game. No reason.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
You got to love how they're throwing to the tight end more now.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Oh, yeah.
Derek Smith
Yes. You know, Willie Rodriguez is a.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
By the way, I said he was from Highlands.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
No, it's okay.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Text machine lit up. He is not from Highlands. He is from Covington Catholic.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I don't think we're gonna get you out of here alive.
Derek Smith
Yeah, yeah. Well, so the AD at Covenant Catholic is a friend of mine. And so we were on a business trip once and so I got to talk to Willie and just congratulated him on, you know, committing to Kentucky. And as a former tight end, I was like, man, you know, it's just to see great tight ends keep, keep going at Kentucky. So, yeah, I mean, you know, I think like I said, I just, I don't see how, you know, we cannot be a little bit more competitive this year. I think the Ole Miss game was tough, but again, I would have thought that Tulane would have given Ole Miss a little bit better of a run, and they didn't. So, you know, I'm talking to a buddy of mine and I'm like, man, maybe we are better than I thought. You know, like, I mean, you kind of want to think, like, nod, but then I'm like, I think we are as good as these guys. I think we should be able to win these games. But it just, in this stuff, it just comes down to doing the one or two things right, dude.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Appreciate you. Derek Smith, Highlands hall of Famer. We write back more from four Thomas Holland High School. And we come back TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call tj. He'll make him pay.
Matt Jones

Still the inventory is down so it's kind of a tough market all around.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I thought it was a good time to buy.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
It's always a good time to buy.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
It's always good time.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Now since Matt's not here, we do need to carry the Reds banner, I guess for him somehow. Shannon the Reds have got themselves right in the thick of the wild card race. Swept the Cubs while the Mets have completely fallen apart. And now going into the final games, this is whether five or six games left. I think there's six games.
Matt Jones
The Reds have the Pirates at home for three and then on the road with Milwaukee and then the Mets have the Cubs who the Reds just swept. And I think. And I think it's at Miami to finish up for the Mets.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Wow.
Matt Jones
So anything could happen here.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
But.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
But as if it ended right now. They're in because they got the tiebreaker with the Mets and the Marlins. They own the tiebreaker with both of them.
Matt Jones
Is it?
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
This was so pretty.
Matt Jones
Now fall of Ellie I remember you.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Can go back and play the tape when they did that west coast swing. He's oh, it's over. We're the worst. It's over, boys. And they still weren't that far behind. I knew they were going to turn it around the moment he got to South Africa. And I've actually because of the NFL show we did that last night. Everyone subscribe to NFL Cover Zero.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Yes.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
New episode dropped this morning. But you know, I was with Matt through through the screen for a couple hours last night. You know we actually have show prep on that so we'll get together an hour before and talk over but in doing that, I've gotten to talk to Matt a lot about a South Africa trip and a he is very excited about the Reds. He even said he might try to call in today to brag to this show. However the safari starts today.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Oh, it does.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Today's the big day. My man's a little nervous about repelling with his nine women but he also and this I'm not spoiling any stories here. He tells the full story on the NFL podcast. But Matt is down there without a phone.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
I saw that. That's got to be the worst thing for that kid. Worst thing possible him be out there without a phone.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Leave aside just the fact that Matt's phone is glued to his hand. I would not want to be in another country alone without a phone, no access to anybody. Yeah, he said it's just too expensive to get one there. So he's gonna handle it. When he gets back, he's like, you can go have a nice dinner here for $4, but an iPhone, they're like three times there. So he's just. He's. I think he was gonna try to find a repair shop. Wouldn't have much luck. But he's starting his safari with the non random women today. The reds are on fire and he doesn't have a cell phone. That man has to be losing his mind.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
How's he communicating with you guys? How do you do the podcast?
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Last night, I heart sent an iPad that's rigged up for us to do our show. So I don't know how he got that one text out to me and Mario, but we basically text from it. Yeah, I guess so. Yeah. Through the iPad. But, you know, we just were talking to him over the screen, but he's like. I guess he saw some. Some bamboos just walking around. I guess there's this city, they just walk on sidewalks like humans. And he's telling me about it. He's like, I wanted to get a video, but I'm just walking around without a phone. If he needs a ride, he goes down to the front desk and has to call a cab. But he tells the story of how that happened on the show and a few others. But I feel like I'm still in Matt time. Everybody's just wondering where he is, and he's gone. And I got to talk to him for several hours last night.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
I feel. Of all the people in the world that can't handle life without a telephone, it's Matt Jones.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah, it'd be difficult just being down there and you're alone. Different area. But he was having fun. He said that the nine women, he had met them that day. I think there was a welcome party. He said they're. They're pretty quiet, but they're locked in. And today he starts repelling and playing Jumanji and all the things he's gonna do.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Well, good luck to him. You guys got your. Your Cover Zero podcast came out. Was it this morning?
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah, they. They do some post stuff.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
It's just.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I don't know the exact time it went up, but it's up.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
It's. It is up now.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
So if it's not, then we have problems. But it's. It's supposed to be up.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
So go check it out.
Derek Smith
Alright.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
859-280-2287. That's the Clark's puppet shop phone number if you want to call and get on board. I do need to ask you guys one question. I was on an air airplane ride out there to Nebraska and back. I do have a question about airplane etiquette.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Oh, this is one of my favorite topics.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
See we've talked about this before with babies crying, but I have a legit serious question about airplane etiquette. Okay, I'm in the middle seat.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Sorry.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
I'm in between two guys. One guy's probably in his 70s, the other guy's probably late 20s. They hook onto the WI fi on American airline. You get on the WI fi and they're on their phone non stop. I mean both of them non stop. Is it bad form or is it rude for me to take a peek? Like what the heck are they doing on their phone? Like their phone, I'm sitting right beside them. Is that a unwritten rule? You can't look at what the other dudes doing on his phone?
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
No, it's fine there. You like leaning over his shoulder and like getting in this photo album. Are you just glancing?
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
It's, it's, it's, it's, it's at nighttime so the phone is lit up of course and I can easily, easily see what he's doing.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah, I think, I mean let's all admit we are, we are nosy people even if we don't want to be. We can't help ourselves. Especially if you're on a plane, you're locked in, you're just sitting there. You can only watch that little map of where you are with the plane going by for so long. So of course if someone's got their phones out, I mean maybe don't read every text they're sending or go through their private stuff if you want to, whatever. But no, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Well, the 70 year old dude is wheeling and dealing Shannon crystals and painted rocks like you know, gemstones and he's selling them on ebay and he's got like 50 of them and he sell and Shannon, they're like a hundred and twenty dollars for a rock. Oh, I know.
Matt Jones
I've bought a lot of those $120 rocks. Good for him that you know there's a market for that and people actually willing to pay for it.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Did you ever get the urge to be like hey man, I couldn't help but notice, you know, can I buy that bright Light ask about it. Maybe get in the rock business.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
I felt like it was rude, like I shouldn't be spying on his business. Now the other guy on the other side, the young guy, he's on his phone non stop and he looks kind of like Billy. But you tell he's nervous. He's touching his face, he's doing his hair, he's moving around. He's on DraftKings.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah, the Crown is yours.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
And he is going through all the late football games and just living and dying with everything. You could tell I was watching. He would, you know, go from game to game, live bet during the game. I mean it was. He was, he was he.
Matt Jones
Did you try to.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
He's called 1-800- gambler.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
See, see, I would have made a best friend. I have this thing. My wife makes fun of me all the time. I'll go to the airport and I leave with five new friends that they met at the bar on the flight. If I had been in the seat and the guy next me, I was on DraftKings. We're talking the whole flight and betting together.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
He was, he was way into it. I mean like way into it.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Coming back from Tahoe, I sat by this guy and I've never seen anything like it. It was a four hour flight. The WI fi wasn't working. But he had the. His phone so close to his face and instead of scrolling with his fingers, he scrolled with his nose.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
No, he didn't.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
And he didn't have any problems. Like it wasn't like a, you know, any kind of handicap issue because he's doing everything else. But he, he had it. He, it was so close to his face, I couldn't believe he could read it. I'm like, you were going to kill your eyeballs. But he would, you know, go down the page with his nose. And I've never seen anything like that.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
To keep you from looking. What he's looking.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
No, I didn't know I was. He was kind of the caddy corner to me a little bit, but I don't know. Have you ever seen someone scroll through Twitter with their nose? No, but. No, to answer your point, that's. I mean there's some things that are debatable. I know people argue over can you put your seat back and you know, fighting over armrests. That's. Those are some hot topics on at airports. But just glancing over the phone, we're all nosy.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
I felt like a peeping Tom. I'm peeping at what they're looking at and what they're doing on their phone. But it was. What are you. I'm stuck in the middle and it's right there in front of me.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah. I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I would have struck up a conversation.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
You mentioned the other one. I'm in the middle seat. Don't. The armrest kind of. I should have first rider refusal on the armrest.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I agree.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
I'm in the middle seat.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I try to work with people on that one, but sometimes they just think it's theirs. And you got to let them know. You don't say anything, but you do an aggressive. I'm here too. With your elbow or your knee, whatever it is. Like, I'm willing to fight for this spot if, you know, need to.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Well, I took kind of the upper half of the armrest and they took the lower half of the armrest because I felt like I'm in the middle. I get first rider refusal.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I thought you. You all would be sitting in first class with your family in those reclining seats. You tell me you're in the middle with strangers.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
We had flights from he double hockey sticks.
Derek Smith
It was awful.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Did you say on the air, off the air, what time you got home? Did you already say that?
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
I've not said that yet. I walked into my house at 3:00' clock this morning. 3:00' clock this morning because we landed in Cincinnati, like, at 1. But I had to take Josiah to his dorm because you know he's gonna go to class this morning. Right.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
He's a big class guy.
Derek Smith
Huge class guy.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
So we're gonna work that out.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
That makes it worse. You were in Cincinnati. If not for needing to get back.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
To drop him over here to Highlands this morning. Yeah, I dropped. I go to bed at 3. Had to come right back up here. Be back up here at 9 this morning.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Well, I don't think you were being a creep looking at phones. That's. That's just what people do.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
All right. Shannon says we got a phone call. Who we got Shannon.
Matt Jones
Let's go to Steve.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Steve, Go ahead. Steve. What's up, guys? How are you, Steve? Hey, I want. I'm doing all right. Headed to the hospital. My sister bill and broke her neck this morning of all things. But sorry, what I wanted to call in about. Yeah, Brad White seems to me like he's a great recruiter and he's great at developing players, but his play calling the suspect. With the amount of NFL talent we've had and that we have potentially now, we should be A top five defense consistently in the SEC and we're not there. And I think it's because it's play calling. I don't know what you guys think about that. I know everybody seems to love him but he interviews for other jobs all the time and never gets one. So I want to get your guys opinion on that. All right, Steve, appreciate it. You know, thought the defense the first two games were like lights out. Took a step back in Eastern Michigan game. I don't know why, I don't know if it was play calling, I don't know if it was effort. I don't know what the.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
They were very thin in the secondary. I mean that's not an excuse against Eastern Michigan you're in the sec. But that is one thing that held them back a little bit.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
They played some freshmen that I mean.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I legitimately covered the team and I'd never heard of. One of the guys was in there making plays.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
So have you seen enough of the defense to give you confidence going into South Carolina?
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I think so. And you know Brad White, a lot of fans don't like the bend, don't break. Wish he's a little more aggressive but his overall body work's been good enough that I'm not going to be too critical of Brad White even though I have a few nitpicky complaints. There is a little bit of like you're watching Drew Phillips and Carrington Valentine, all these guys on NFL Sunday starting for these teams. But overall I think Brad White's a good man. He's a good coach in the locker room. Wish he'd, you know, maybe blitz a little more, maybe get a little more aggressive. But that's just his style of play and it's actually worked for Kentucky many times. You know, sometimes against the Tennessee's and the fast paced offenses that can really throw it around, it doesn't work out. But overall I think he's done a good job.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Got itchy in my throat.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Sorry. Sorry. Yeah, I can absolutely do that. You know, Matt said this but. And I don't think it's that wrong. But when Stoops leaves, whenever that is, if Mitch Barnhart is still in charge, I think Brad White will be high on Mitch Barnhart's list of people he wants to to seriously consider.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
When does Summerall's name go down? A little bit after they got waxed by Ole Miss.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
You know we as Kentucky fans we root for Tulane and you know, I guess Mario put that in the parlay.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Yes.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
But that, that if he had beaten Ole Miss. We might have had to start thinking that he's not an option here because there's going to be a lot of open jobs.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Florida's gonna be open.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah, he would have. He's already high on all coaching searches as it is. But if he had beaten Ole Miss in Oxford, he might have gotten out of Kentucky's reach. So that that might have been a good win if people are really wanting that name whenever that time comes.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Alright, we'll take our break. Come back our final segment. Final break, final segment here 859-280-2287. Ryan, Drew and Shannon here live at Fort Thomas Highlands High School on Kentucky Sports Radio.

Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. Yeah, on the A Vision Glass text machine. Drew somebody texted in we should have asked Tayden if he believed they actually landed on the moon or not because Jared was a big conspiracy theorist that that never happened.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I'm kicking myself for not thinking that because I'm the one that would poke Jared and go off on those rants on the football podcast.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
And he was convinced they never landed on the moon. It was done in a studio. He's convinced I might have to run.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
In the cafeteria and find him and ask him off there because we need to know that before we leave.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Who's this segment sponsored by Drew oh.

Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Before we get out of here, we do want to talk a little basketball because there's been some news come out.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah, today they can start practicing more. Pope even tweeted they had an early morning practice. I believe they took like three days off between the summer workouts. And then today it goes from eight hours to 20 a week. So they're ramping up over there with instruction and coaching all their at once. And then I was kind of watching it as we were setting it up because it went out, but Pope put a short highlight clip out. Got like Malachi Moreno dunking on people.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Nice.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Trent Noah hitting the corner three. It's only about a minute clip, but I know we're excited about football ramping back up this week, but the basketball team is really getting in the lab too. Pope said they have Another practice this afternoon. So a two a day to start the week.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Well, that's why I gave him three days off. Off. It's about their legs are about to get sore. A lot of practice, a lot of time on the court. Come up the next starting today.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah, and it was great. I caught a little bit of Phil 68 last week, but, you know, Jack Pilgrim's had some insider notes. They're bringing people into practices. J. Kyle Mann from the Ringer and the reviews were getting are quite encouraging. A lot of. Lot of look at this team. Depth is the word you keep hearing. Like, very, very, very high floor and a very high ceiling. And we'll see how the finished product is. But, you know, I don't know exactly what Jeff and Rob said on this show.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
They were great.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
People were saying national contenders, if all pans out, that it's looking good.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Now a mutual friend of ours has a little intel. He went to practice. The practice he was at those. Not only was o way out, Lowe was also out. You know, Low probably just getting him ready for practice. Real practice time. So Low was out, Ortega was out, and JQ was out. So who do you think? With the starting five on the white team, knowing those guys were out, who would you have predicted that day?
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Okay.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Was on the starting five on the white team.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
So lose. I. I'm just gonna go because I got to split them up. I'll say Colin Chandler.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
No.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Aberdeen.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Aberdeen was the point guard.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah. I think he's gonna be the backup. Jasper Johnson.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
No.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Cam Williams.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
No. Cam Williams was the three.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Okay. Well, I was just naming anyone starting.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
I don't know.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Just give it to me.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Trent Noah was the two.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
He was the two.
Tayton Lorenzen
Okay.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I would have been one of my last guesses.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Me too. And then Diabate the four and Brandon Garrison the five. That was the five they went with that day.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
And I think, you know, that's just patching a Rosso together while these guys are out early. But I thought Noah, this would be a year where he's gonna sit a little bit for next year because of the depth he's gonna make them play him. Yeah, like, I mean, they included him in the shortcut today. Pope even said in the tweet Mountain Mamba. He said something about him. So, I mean, he is gonn to put him on the court just with all the hard work and hitting open shots.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
I asked him about yellow bitch, and he said second team didn't impress me. But Jack said he was good when he saw him. Maybe just had a Bad day that.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
He'S just getting here. You know, he's got a lot to get used to, so I'm not going to be judging him a little farther down the road, but I think highly of him, too.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
And piggyback what you said about Chandler. Said he was good, just very solid leader of the blue team. He's going to get minutes to him and Trent. Both are going to just make it impossible to not get them on the floor, I think.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I feel like I expect a big jump from Chandler, but one of the. One of the things I saw out of practices is this time last year wasn't a lot of talk of NBA talent on the team. How many times we say it, that's true. He did good in the portal, but is there a star, you know, is there an NBA talent this year? Multiple options out there can be NBA guests.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
And since you missed it, like, Goodman and Rob Doster were both, like, saying, Jaden Quaint could be the best player once he's healthy. He's not just the best player. He's the highest draft pick. He's the guy, and they love him as a person. Like, he plays chess and, you know, has these intellectual conversations with him, and he. What is he, 17, 18?
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah, he's a child. Yeah. He seems like such. Such a good kid. And thank you all to you all. I was excited to do that field of 68 show. I even set it up, but set it up. I listened as much as I could, given the circumstances, and it was great hearing Jack fill in. You all did a great job. Thank you, Jack.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Well, when Tate and Lorenzen left, Coach Spire came over and said, you know, he's only 16 years old.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah, that's crazy.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
He's a junior and he's 16 years old.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
He said, really? Tayden could be a freshman if he needed to. By the way, the calendar works. I mean, you can't go back now, but that's how young he is.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
I told Coach Spire, I said, I think the coach would figure that out. He goes, that was before I got here. Before I got here.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
But it just goes to show you how much growing he still has to do. You know, he seemed a little down, talking about how there aren't many offers there, but he's got so much time and that that will work itself out.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
That's why I told him that's the first of many coming his way. You know, he's. Once he gets bigger, better, stronger, and Highlands continues to have this success, those coaches come find you. Now, we did get a message from one coach.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
That coach.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
A coach we used to feel very fondly of till he went down the road to that other school. He heard us talking about Tayden and he heard us say, if Vince Merrill calls, hang up. Vince Merrill texted us. I love that kid.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
I missed the big dog. I'm still not over that one.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
That's what we liked him when he would go after.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
Yeah, now. Now we're on the other end.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Now we're on the other end of it. Stay away. Stay away.
Shannon (Kentucky Sports Radio Co-host)
So that's still taking some getting used to for me.
Kentucky Sports Radio Host (Ryan Lemond)
Shannon's got one more read for us. What do you got, Shannon? Yep.
