This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Drew Franklin
Looked like it. Welcome in Kentucky Sports Radio. Drew Franklin here with Ryan Lemon at KS Bar and Grill. It is Tuesday, right? September 30th.
Ryan Lemon
It is Tuesday.
Drew Franklin
Bright skies in Lexington. Shannon the dudes in Louisville got a fun show planned for you today. Ryan booked us more guests Richie Farmer and his longtime best friend Buck Stivers who have been on the show a couple times. They will join us today. We were actually just wondering if they'll show up. I just saw a truck go by. Was that them?
Ryan Lemon
They did.
Drew Franklin
The truck just came in on two wheels.
Ryan Lemon
It looked like they were looking in like I think that's them. It looks like them. It might be them.
Drew Franklin
I see shadows. I see them. They will be in here in Just a minute. We love talking to Richie and Buck. We'll have them for the whole show. But we also want to hear from you on the Clark's Pump and shop phone line. 859-280-2287. You can also text Ryan on the Avision glass text machine. 502-735-36. 80. Did you forget it again?
Ryan Lemon
I forgot it again.
Drew Franklin
Three straight, Ryan. I mean, at some point, there has to actually be consequences for action. Shannon, this is it. This has been every day.
Shannon
I know. Mario needs to have a good talking to you about the consistency. Now you're being consistently bad. You're leaving stuff at home that's supposed to be a part of the show.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, that one time. Okay. Haha. That's funny. But I think it's been every day. What's going on with the. With the. With the?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
I mean, they pay good money to sponsor, they bought you a brand new iPhone, and you have yet to show up with it.
Ryan Lemon
I think I forgot it at Bywater Farm on Friday.
Drew Franklin
Oh, my goodness.
Ryan Lemon
Definitely forgot it yesterday. What are we doing today? The Avision Glass tech machine. Well, it's. It's on a charger at my house, but that doesn't do us off. The charger.
Drew Franklin
They don't sponsor the Ryan Lemon nightstand where it just sits there collecting dust. They want it to be part of the show. I think. I think he's on probation, Shannon.
Shannon
I think he is too. We need to, like, tape that to your arm so you don't forget it. Ryan, you gotta have it with you.
Ryan Lemon
I think if I forget it tomorrow at Shannon's house, there has to be a punishment.
Drew Franklin
All right, we'll set that up. Also, there's one more thing you forgot I'll get to in a second. Let me run through my stuff. I'll go to you, Shannon. Okay. As always, the show is brought to you by T.J. smith, personal injury lawyer. Call T.J. and what, Shannon.
Shannon
He'll make them pay.
Drew Franklin
All right, now with that, let's get to the other thing Orion Lemon forgot. Richie Farmer is here. We'll go right back to last Friday's show where Ryan made up a game where we each had to build our top basketball roster using players who share the same first initial of our first name.
Ryan Lemon
Correct.
Drew Franklin
So my name is Drew. I had demarcus Cousins, Dan Issel, Darius Miller. Had a long list. I did forget de' Aaron Fox. Sorry, Darren, but Ryan, who made up his own this game with the R's, forgot several key players, including one Richie Farmer. Who now joins us today with his good friend, Buck. Good to have you guys. Richie Ryan, would you like to hash this out before we move on?
Richie Farmer
Well, yeah, I was listening and, you know, since I knew Buck and I was going to be here today, I was like, he'll surely remember me on this one. And then I got to listening to his list and I mean, you know, like, he left off me and Rex, the Kentucky boys. I mean, homegrowns. I mean, you know. Yeah, we can't even make the squad. I mean, we weren't even on the bench.
Ryan Lemon
I humbly, humbly bow in your presence, asking and begging for your forgiveness. Because that was a total oversight on my part. You know, it's live radio. You're thinking on the fly, you know, and I just totally.
Shannon
Dude, it was homework, you guys.
Drew Franklin
And you, you invented the homework. You were the one that designed the homework. You were the teacher.
Ryan Lemon
You know, I was so excited about my backcourt of Ralph Beard and Raijan Rondo. Forgot about Richie Farmer and Rex Chapman. So I beg your forgiveness, sir.
Richie Farmer
Well, I mean, we will work past. Okay, we'll work past it, but it's going to take a while. Haven't heard from that. That was hurtful. That was hurtful.
Drew Franklin
It's good to have you here, Richard, Buck.
Richie Farmer
Oh, it's great to be here, guys. I mean, we're so excited that you all asked us to do this. And I know, you know, Buck, he's just through the roof.
Buck Stivers
Yeah. A little bit shaky, though. Have we got. Had a little tough time getting here with the traffic.
Drew Franklin
You're in the big city.
Richie Farmer
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
You know, it's sitting. This isn't Clay County. We got. We got like new circles and Nicholasvilles and all kinds of things that will get backed up.
Buck Stivers
Yeah, it was a lot of black topping. Yeah.
Richie Farmer
A lot of construction.
Drew Franklin
Well, it is good to have you on here. And don't sweat it. Ryan forgets a lot of things these days, so I'm glad you all settled in. Richie. Just for those who don't know, I know you all been on several times. You're some of our favorites. But I'll go to you, Buck, explain. You know, I'm sure most of our listeners are familiar with the basketball legend here, but let's get a little bit about Buck. You know, you've known Richie forever. You were probably the most talented of the two. But you go back several years, lifelong friends, right?
Buck Stivers
Yes. I was always a little older than Richie, so that's how he was able to get perfect. His shooting Because I used to smack that stuff in the neighborhood.
Ryan Lemon
Is that what happened?
Buck Stivers
That's what happened.
Ryan Lemon
See, I didn't know that's part of the story.
Richie Farmer
Yeah.
Buck Stivers
And the left hand where he had, you know, he just couldn't get it over me. And.
Richie Farmer
Yeah, yeah, we used to. And. And we also. We played. You know, we. We had basketball goals hung up just wherever you could hang one up. And we had one. His dad had a barn down there, and. And it was. They had Tennessee walking horses. And so, you know, they had a big, long hallway in there. And so we. We figured out a way that we could put us a goal up, and we tied it up with seagrass string on the side. So you had to be. We nailed it to the rafter, but then we had to, because it would sag. And so we tied it up with string on the side. And so you had to be at certain angles to be able to make it. But, no, he's telling you the truth. He was two years older than. Than I was and a lot bigger and stronger.
Ryan Lemon
He's blocking your stuff.
Richie Farmer
So I had to learn how to, you know, get my shot off against bigger people. You know, those days we played against older folks. We would play against, you know, the bigger. Then in grade school, you know, I mean, you'd have the third and fourth graders playing with the seventh and eighth grader. So, I mean, we played against older people, and. And I think that certainly in a lot of ways can help you buck.
Drew Franklin
What was it? Is it tough to guard? But there must be some tough angles if there's string hanging and the goal's tilted. Seems there's only certain spots you could get a good shot from.
Buck Stivers
Yes, straight on or from the corner and one little spot on the wing, but you had to shoot between the.
Richie Farmer
Strings, and you had to put plenty of arch on it. Had to go up over the rafters.
Drew Franklin
I know everybody likes to give their. Their best friends a hard time, but if you can brag on them for a moment. At what point growing up were you like, all right, this guy's got something?
Buck Stivers
Well, I mean, it was pretty obvious, you know, I can remember when he was in probably third or fourth grade, the coach basically, you know, brought him in and said, throw it to him and he's going to shoot it, you know, which. A lot of the seventh and ninth graders didn't care much for that strategy, but it, you know, it seemed to work.
Drew Franklin
It's probably also a giveaway when he walked into third grade with a mustache, that probably set him Apart.
Richie Farmer
Yes.
Buck Stivers
That helped him a whole lot with that. With that section of it.
Ryan Lemon
Well, you're not gonna take it easy on him, though. You're gonna, you know, push him around and let little third grader take my spot here out of here.
Buck Stivers
Well, at that point, I didn't have a spot. You know, I was in, like, in betweener. I was in, like, fifth grade, you know, and it went all the way to eighth grade. So at that time, I wasn't even, you know, really playing that much.
Drew Franklin
We want to hear a lot of these stories about your all's past. We're gonna do that all day long. We want to get calls on the Clark's pump shop phone line, 859-280-2287. If you have questions for Richie or buck or Ryan or Drew or Mario, we'll drag him over. It's not a Wednesday, but it's a ask anything Tuesday. And I think, you know, Matt's back on Friday.
Ryan Lemon
Correct.
Drew Franklin
Tomorrow we got a fun show planned. We'll talk about that later. But, you know, I try to be my own guy. I'm not trying to do Matt's exact show here, but I do feel like we have to mention the Cincinnati Reds in the first segment. I mean, he mentions them in the first segment anyway, no matter what they do, win or lose. But, Ryan, it is a pretty big day for the old Reds right back in the playoffs.
Ryan Lemon
They made the playoffs in the COVID year, but that was the shortened season. So really it's their first time to make the playoffs in like. What is it, like, 30, over 30 years or something like that. It's amazing.
Drew Franklin
Won a series since 1995.
Richie Farmer
That's.
Drew Franklin
That's crazy. Beating the Dodgers of all teams.
Ryan Lemon
It's a. It's a big deal for them to be. I think what. When September 1st rolled around, Shannon, I think they were like, maybe six games out of the wild card race and still somehow made it. They got hot right when the Mets kind of did not get hot. They started losing right when the Reds were winning. So it is kind of a hell of a run. They got on them and get in the playoffs.
Richie Farmer
You know, they've got a sneaky, good pitching staff.
Ryan Lemon
And so Hunter Green's going tonight.
Richie Farmer
You know, he's going tonight. I'm not saying they can beat. You know, obviously the Dodgers are. They have probably the best roster in baseball. But he's picked them tonight.
Buck Stivers
He has picked them tonight.
Richie Farmer
But I picked the Reds. But I picked the Reds tonight. I think it's going to Be an upset tonight.
Drew Franklin
The Dodgers do lead in like home runs, like slugging most every category. But the two sides pitching stats are pretty equal. It's only a three game series. We can drink a little bit.
Richie Farmer
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
So if Hunter Green's going tonight, is Lodolo going tomorrow night for the Reds? If you throw those two guys back to back, you got a shot.
Richie Farmer
You got a shot. I mean, and obviously there's no pressure. So you know, everybody expects them to lose.
Ryan Lemon
Dodgers won what, five of six during the season?
Drew Franklin
Yep.
Richie Farmer
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
And Hunter Green got destroyed in one of them. They lost seven. Oh, and he gave up five runs on his own.
Ryan Lemon
I didn't know that.
Drew Franklin
He's an LA native. Redemption game tonight, 9 o' clock ESPN. What's our KS Bar special? Great American burgers. $9. Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, great American burgers that are normally like $12.50, you can get a great American burger for $9. And if you come in wearing anything Cincinnati Red, you get a free side of fries. So if you want to order a chicken sandwich or a fish sandwich or some wings, if you have red stuff on, you still get a side of fries with a purchase. So game day specials all day today, tomorrow and Thursday. If they're still playing and if they.
Drew Franklin
Can get to game three, we'll have a party here. And I think Matt is going to.
Ryan Lemon
Try to make it.
Drew Franklin
Try to go from airport to KS Bar to watch the game here, but one game at a time. Got that? Tonight, nine o' clock ESP game. Hunter Green versus Blake Snow for nine.
Ryan Lemon
O' clock too, aren't they? I think Thursday.
Caller
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
I like the consistency.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
One other quick thing before we go to break in Cincinnati sports. The Bengals watched it. It's not great. I actually turned it off. You know Ryan, I work for the NFL now, so.
Richie Farmer
That's right.
Drew Franklin
You have to watch every game. You know, I get Rogers emails. It's. It's a whole thing. But I had to turn that game off last night. The Bengals, they're not like the Titans where they just completely suck but they have no hope with, with Burrow being out, they're all score a touchdown.
Ryan Lemon
Their offense is nothing. Without Burrow out there it seems like, I mean you still got Jamar, Chase and Higgins and they can't get him involved in any way, shape or form. It seems like Chase, probably the best.
Drew Franklin
Receiver in the NFL completely nothing this year, doesn't have the QB to help him out. Maybe you go get Jameis Winston but also wanted to bring up after the game. I don't Know if you saw this, Chad Johnson does a some kind of show with Shannon Sharp. I can't keep up with all the Shannon Sharpe shows. But Chad is just bawling his eyes out. Crying how disappointed is not like a little tear full on grown man ugly cry over the Bengals. So one Cincinnati sport on a high today, the other on a low because I think it's going to be a long year for Cincinnati.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. Burrows out for a long time. So they. There's no magic fix. I think that offense right now.
Richie Farmer
Quick.
Ryan Lemon
No quick fix for sure.
Drew Franklin
We did have a unique moment last night at the game. My brother in law, Michael lives in Denver and he sent me a picture from the stadium. He was at the game with with our friend Tyler. Right in front of him were people wearing key jerseys.
Ryan Lemon
How about that?
Drew Franklin
And he said, is this their parents? I was like, that absolutely is. So in a stadium of whatever thousand brother in law is up sitting right next to Dante and Nicole last night. Ryan, do they just go to everything? I mean they're the most supportive parents. You've got one in Lincoln, Nebraska now that can't be an easy trip. And it doesn't matter if they're playing Seattle, New York in Denver, they're finding Devon with the Broncos.
Ryan Lemon
There's probably not a lot of people in the stadium wearing a number 26 key jersey. So I think when Michael saw that, like it has to be their family or something beyond Dante, Nicole, they go to Nebraska games on Saturday, Broncos games on Sunday. Broncos are getting ready to go to London. Like they play the Eagles next and then I think they go to London. While we're talking about the keys, this man sitting right here, Richie Farmer reached out to me when Dane was here at uk, said, hey man, I'd like to talk to Dane. I'd like to tell him about, you know, being a local kid, a Kentucky kid playing for uk. I'd like to just talk to him about my experience, maybe help him a little bit. I thought that was really cool for Richie to reach out and do that.
Richie Farmer
Well, it was during the time when he was kind of going through a little difficult where he had some drops and you know, people were, you know, kind of on his case. But, you know, I think the world of the kid and I wish him nothing but success, you know, and whatever he does, he certainly has a chance to play at the next level and I would love nothing more, more than to see that for.
Drew Franklin
Well, that's very cool that you did that, Rich. You've probably done that several times. We'll find about. Found out more about that a little more after the break. Might talk a little more about the overall MLB playoffs starting today. We start like one o', clock, right?
Ryan Lemon
There's four games today, I think.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
First one's at one. I think the Padres play at three. I think something like that.
Drew Franklin
I'm very open about that. I do not pay attention until right now. I will watch every game today. I didn't watch a single full game of the regular season, but I lock in for playoff baseball. That starts at one. And we have a lot more here at KS Bar with Drew, Ryan, Richie and Buck. We'll be right back. Welcome back to ksr. Drew Franklin here with Ryan Lemon, Richie Farmer and Buck Stivers made the trip from Clay county despite a little bit of blacktopping getting in the way, as they said, Ryan Lemon slowing them down just a few minutes. That's all right.
Ryan Lemon
You know, they're used to that traffic in Clay county, you know, where there's maybe, what is there, one car?
Richie Farmer
There's no traffic. We're used to that traffic where there's no traffic.
Buck Stivers
Oh, yeah. You liables to get held up by a bicycle.
Ryan Lemon
We love Clay County. We've done some shows down there with the MM Effort concert.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. What's the. What's the place with the Grippo's fries?
Ryan Lemon
Best fries and burgers around.
Drew Franklin
Absolutely. We want to hear from you all on the Clark's Pump and shop phone line, 859-280-2287. Probably talk a little basketball with Richie. We could do more Reds because Buck just went to his car and came back wearing a Reds batting helmet that looks like it's 50 years old. What season was that? Is that from. It's pretty faded.
Buck Stivers
Well, actually, the hat came from when we was kids. You could go to Sailor Brothers supermarket and get a Slush Puppy and a little bitty bat and helmet and they. And if you got so many, you end up getting the bat and helmet. So that's how many Slush Puppies.
Drew Franklin
I tell it on yourself. You're one of the people they put on the wall when you do the food challenge.
Richie Farmer
Absolutely.
Buck Stivers
And I'm the one with the hat.
Ryan Lemon
That batting helmet has to be from the 70s because it faded and it's barely anything hanging on there. It's got to be the 70s.
Buck Stivers
I'm 58 and I was probably 5 or less when I got that.
Drew Franklin
Wow. So I wasn't. I wasn't far off with my 50 year prediction. Are you all Reds fans down There in Clay County.
Richie Farmer
Yeah. Growing up, you know, that was really who we had access to. That was the games that will be on tv, if there ever were any. And then we would listen to Marty Branham, you know, on the radio.
Buck Stivers
Oh, when we was. I remember when I was 16, our Little League group went to a Reds game and me and Richie and his brother Russ drove down in my little S10 pickup and watched the Reds play. I'll never forget it because they got in a fight. And Russ rode in the back of the truck from Cincinnati to London, and he finally was, you know, knocking on the window, wanting in there. He got a little cool.
Drew Franklin
I have an image of him, him in the back of the truck and you wearing that batting helmet, up driving. Do you remember what started the fight? Is that radio friendly?
Richie Farmer
I have no idea. I mean, it could have been brother brotherly love.
Drew Franklin
Probably pretty common around that time. Shannon, let's knock out some phone calls.
Richie Farmer
All right.
Shannon
Let's go to Pat.
Drew Franklin
Pat, thanks for calling in.
Caller
Yeah. What's going on? I just have to talk about the football game. I know it's a basketball Reds thing.
Richie Farmer
But.
Caller
I actually live in Charleston, South Carolina. Grew up in Louisville, went to uk. Die hard. UK fans. Love you, Richie. Hey, I thank you, sir, but this is an embarrassment of what's been going on with us. South Carolina owns us. They owns us. And I hate. I can't believe I'm even saying this. I hate South Carolina more than I hate UofL. I do. Because you don't understand when you live in a state. Well, they, they. They act like they're lsu, Alabama and Georgia. They think they're the best. And every time they beat us, I gotta hear it from all a lot of fans. And they're obnoxious as can be because they're not that good. They're not that good. But we lose to them like that and now I have to hear it from all these people. So I just had to get that my chest. Have a great rest of the day and thanks for letting me call it.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Appreciate the call. Glad you were able to let. Let that out. Felt therapeutic there. But you're right, they're some of the most obnoxious fans in the sec. Think I talked about this on pregame, Ryan. We think about the Tennessee's being loud and you know, the worst. South Carolina is not too far off, but they don't get talked about enough for that. And, you know, you got punched in the face by one of them.
Ryan Lemon
You know, we've talked. You talk about former players that played there. Like, I think even JoJo mentioned it, JoJo camp when he was here. It is as loud as any place they ever played. When it gets. When it gets rocking and gets going and they played Sandstorm. It just, it is, it's. It's a. It's a tough place to play. And when you turn it over and have a scoop and score and an interception within 45 seconds, the top's gonna blow off A place like that.
Drew Franklin
And the caller sound apologetic for bringing up football on a basketball show. Now, we're still complaining about football. We'll do plenty of that. It just happens that we have a former basketball player here, but we want football calls, too. This is a big week and we know everybody's pretty frustrated. I assume you all are down on the football cats at the moment.
Richie Farmer
Somewhat. It's hard to find a lot of positive things. You know, the one thing, you know, I really like, Cutter Bowley, I played basketball against his dad in high school. He played in LaRue county, so.
Drew Franklin
Scott.
Richie Farmer
Yes. And, you know, we actually. We went to Europe together. You know, during the. I played. We played on that Kentucky junior all star team together and went to Europe together. So, you know, I'm cheering for him. I'm a big fan of his and I think, you know, he has a lot of a bright future ahead. He made a lot of mistakes, but, you know, I was hearing Anthony White yesterday morning talk a little bit about. He said. He said if I'd going off my career had been based on my first game, it was the worst game I ever played. You know, so sometimes that can motivate you, but you learn from it. And he needs experience. But I think that that's the one bright spot that we can talk about. But there's a lot of things to be disappointed about. And that South Carolina game just brought a lot of them to the surface. I think.
Drew Franklin
I think a lot of people are patient and Boley being young, they know he's in a tough spot. But Ryan, Nick Roush just shared a stat about the offense as a whole.
Ryan Lemon
It's not going to be good, is it?
Drew Franklin
It's not pretty. There's only. Let me get this right. Only two teams in all of the FBS have fewer passing touchdowns in Kentucky. And it's not even the military schools that usually don't throw. It's UMass and Northern Illinois and then Kentucky with the fewest passing touchdowns so far this season.
Richie Farmer
Wow.
Ryan Lemon
Well, we knew going in there we were going to be a run heavy team because we had the good running backs and a good offensive line. But I thought the passing game with the receivers we had would be enough to get something going when our leading receivers are a couple tight ends. I mean, it makes you kind of wonder, okay, what is going on in that wide receiver room that they can't get somebody to kind of step up and help that passing game a little bit.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, thank God for that Eastern Michigan, Eastern Michigan game when they got them going. But let's, let's move on from that and have happier things. Who's up next on the phone line?
Shannon
Shannon, let's go to James.
Drew Franklin
James, what's up?
Caller
Hey, good afternoon or good morning. Like I said, let's keep it a basketball show for a moment. For me real quick, I heard this story more, I believe I heard this story from the Rick Patino side of things. But I'd like to take you back, Richie. About 35 years ago, 1990, I believe, and I only asked this because I think the outcome was a good outcome. But if I recall the story correctly, that you left the team briefly or went back to Clay county after a conflict of sorts and Rick Patino came to your house and you guys had a come to Jesus meeting. And I would like to hear the story from your perspective and kind of the context of what surrounded that and how that story went. And I'll hang up and listen.
Richie Farmer
Thanks, guys.
Ryan Lemon
Well, listen, we got, we only got a minute, so sit on that because I don't want to cut this story at all. I want to hear your response because I've heard that story, too. You ever heard it from your side?
Richie Farmer
Okay. Yeah, I'll let you know.
Ryan Lemon
Okay, hang on. We don't want to cut you short.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, yeah, we want to, but it's.
Richie Farmer
But it is certainly longer than a minute. So.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, yeah, we'll hold off. We'll come right back to that. Out of the break, it's Drew here with Ryan at KS Bar and Grill. Big Reds day. Come in here for our Reds Discounts game tonight at 9:00'. Clock. And we got Richie and Buck here sharing stories. We'll be right back after this. T.J. smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. he'll make him pay.
Shannon
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Drew Franklin
This is not Matt Jones. This is Drew Franklin. Matt Jones is wrapping African Safari right now. I'll actually check in with him later today. I'm doing Matt Jones interrupted.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, you are doing that today. She's an update.
Drew Franklin
Just Matt, vacation time Here, Drew. Let's just do all the shows.
Richie Farmer
So it's all right.
Ryan Lemon
Does he fly back to the United States tomorrow or Thursday?
Drew Franklin
I think Thursday, but I'm not positive. I'll have to. I'll let you know after I talk to him in his tent.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Richie Farmer
Here.
Drew Franklin
Later this afternoon.
Ryan Lemon
I can't wait to hear his stories, because for him, just picture. Trying to picture him in a tent on a safari. That's just not how I picture Matt.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. I think when we say tent. Are you familiar with glamping? I don't. I don't think he, you know, was out there putting the stakes in the ground and sleeping out there with. With the. With the elements, but he's.
Ryan Lemon
But he's staying out in the. In the wild.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. At a. I would assume a resort in the wild. But he's still out in the wild. You know, some. Sometimes tends to have hot tubs, whatever. But, you know, he is. For him, he is roughing it. I'm not trying to downplay. He is in Cougar national park with animals around him.
Ryan Lemon
For him, that's. That's. That's big.
Drew Franklin
There's one thing that happened today when I walked in and we got to get to Richie's story, but I thought, I have to get out in front of this before Matt lands.
Ryan Lemon
All right.
Drew Franklin
I went in the back to get a drink, you know, Got it. Got a drink. Today I'm hosting. Gotta get me a little water. When I reached for a straw like I normally would do, you gotta have a straw on the radio, you know, Got this little thing here. Got a sip. It was a paper straw.
Richie Farmer
Oh.
Drew Franklin
And I thought if Matt Jones was here and saw a paper straw in this bar, I think he would. I think he'd throw the TVs. I think he would break everything in here. Luckily, it was just sent as like, a sample thing to try. We're not switching. But as you know, if that had been something that happened while Matt was out of the country, I think there would have been hell to pay here.
Ryan Lemon
I think the headphones would have slammed down on the table and we may not have seen for a couple segments. He'd been back there trying to get some plastic straws delivered immediately, but all good there.
Drew Franklin
And he's back Friday at Shady Rays in Louisville.
Ryan Lemon
Yes. Big show. Shady Ray's Match return.
Drew Franklin
So Ryan and I have. And Shannon have a coup days. I want to talk about tomorrow's show a little later. Right now, let's. We don't want to make people wait Any longer for that story we got cut off on. So, Richie, I don't forgot what the guy asked, but had it.
Ryan Lemon
Well, I've heard the story where Rick Patino. Richie left the team. Patino went down to Clay county, talked Richie to come back to the team. That's. I've heard that story for years. I've never heard your side of it.
Richie Farmer
Well, it didn't happen exactly like that, but, you know, they're shocking. There was. There was a time where, you know, I'd been running morning, noon and night for about a month, and, you know, and I kind of felt like that I was being picked on. And, you know, there I was just going through a lot, and I was doing everything that I could do. And so one morning I was over. I was on the StairMaster, and, you know, Rock Oliver was. Was in there. And of course, Rock, you know, famous, you know, he was famously not too happy in the morning, especially when he had to get up and be there. And I didn't want to be there either, but I was on StairMaster, you know, doing the best that I could do. Nothing wrong, you know, whatever was happening. And he started, you know, cursing at me and, you know, talking about, you know, putting me down, whatever. Yeah, I guess, trying to encourage me. But at that point, I think it was my breaking point. And so I just hit the button, stepped off of it and looked at him and kind of gave him a few choice words and said, I quit. And so I walked into the locker room and I was sitting there, you know, and I. Because I'd never quit anything in my life. And I was sitting there and I was sitting. You know what. Because that was my dream. That was, you know, that was what I had always wanted to do. And. But I just, you know, I just kind of felt like that. That they wanted to get rid of me. They were trying to run me off. So, you know, so I was crying, and, you know, he comes in to the locker room and he's like, well, go up to the coach's office and tell them what you've done. And so, you know, I didn't need. Finished getting dressed. I just got my clothes together and I walked up into the coach's office. When at any other time, if you'd been trying to avoid them, they would have been everywhere. I walked through. There wasn't a coach anywhere in there. So I just proceeded. I walked on out to the lodge and I was crying so hard. I called one of my buddies and I said, look, I've quit the team. And I need somebody to take me to Clay county, you know, take me home. And they was like, all right, we'll be right on over. So they come over and pick me up. And, I mean, we get to Manchester, and so when I walk in the door, there's my whole family sitting there waiting on me.
Ryan Lemon
How'd they know?
Richie Farmer
Well, Coach had called. He was out on the road recruiting at the time, and he had called and. And, you know, he had let them know what was going on. So when I walked in, they was like, well, what's the deal? So, you know, we had a conversation, but they told me that Coach Pitino had called and that he wanted. That he was going to be able to call back that evening to talk to me, but he wanted actually us to come up there the next day he was coming back in town. So I went back. You know, long story short, you know, I went back up there the next day into his basement. And, you know, we. We did talk about a whole lot of things.
Ryan Lemon
Just you and him?
Richie Farmer
Just me and him. We went down into the basement. Mom and dad stayed upstairs with Joanne. And, you know, we were down there probably maybe an hour and a half, but, you know, we started talking about a lot of things. But at the end of the. At the end of it, he said, well, I think if you're going to quit. He said, I'm just going. I think I'll just quit, too. You know.
Shannon
Andy Griffith show, reverse psychology.
Richie Farmer
Yes. I mean, he. Yeah, no, it was. It was a Jedi mind trick for. I mean, no doubt. So I started like, well, you can't do that, Coach. I mean, you know, you can't quit. You're Ricky P. And he is like, well, yeah, he said, you know, if you. If you don't want to. If you ain't gonna stick it out, then I think I'll just quit, too. And we'll just quit together. We'll have a press conference. And I said, we can't do that. And, you know, so he said. He said, well, I mean, will you stay with the team? And I said, coach, all I need to hear is that you want me on this team. You know, I said, I grew up dreaming of playing here, and I love this place, and I'll give it everything and have given it everything that I've got, but I just need to know that you want me. And he said, we want you. And so we hugged and cried and carried on, and we went upstairs and, you know, told mom and dad, you know, So I stayed in Lexington, and the Rest is history. But that did happen.
Drew Franklin
Wow, Buck, what would you have done if he had come back and had told you he'd quit?
Buck Stivers
Well, I'll be honest with you, I saw the transformation from the time he left Clay county to the time he went to Rick Pitino's boot camp down here. And like, when Richie left, don't get me wrong, Richie had more talent than you know. He was not the most in shape player I'd ever seen, but he could play ball. And when they took him down there the first time I'd seen him, when he came back, I was up at the top of his hill, and he lives up on a pretty big hill, and he had a bunch of guys in there and they was rabbit hunting or something. And here he comes running up that hill with a shotgun and he run right past me and right on up the hill. And I stand there talking to Richard and I said, who was that?
Caller
You know, I mean, you know, if.
Buck Stivers
The court been more than 90ft in high school, you'd have trouble.
Richie Farmer
But.
Buck Stivers
But it was amazing, the transformation, you know, And, I mean, he was in the best shape of his life at that time. And I guess we have to thank Rock Oliver for that.
Richie Farmer
Yep.
Drew Franklin
Mention this. Heel. You've told the story before. I said, he'll say heel. I made it two syllables there. Yeah, you've told it in the past, but you grew up shooting on the side of a hill. Shouldn't your conditioning be the best if you're chasing rebounds, like, down the hill like that?
Richie Farmer
I didn't miss that many. But, you know, coach. Coach Keith and Coach Patino were. I mean, there were a lot of similarities in the way that they did things because both were uber successful at what they did. But. But Coach Keith didn't believe, you know, he played college basketball on a small scale. And he said, I remember our coaches and how they would run us and how, you know, we just didn't have anything left. And he said, I never wanted my players to, you know, I want to. I want to keep their legs. And so he believed in playing into shape. And so, you know, my last couple years in high school, I was. I mean, you were in shape enough to play his style, but. But it was. We didn't run and press and play the style that Coach Pitino played. And it was completely different.
Buck Stivers
You know, I watched the kids warm up, you know, and like, they'll be shooting from all over. Well, if you played for Coach Keith and you can't. He came out there and you was not shooting from where you was going to be shooting in a game. Use in trouble. You know, like if one of your six one center is out there shooting a three pointer, he's in trouble. It's, it's, the game has changed a whole lot. But like coach Keith had his players. I mean you didn't go out, if he caught you at the ballpark shooting from where you wouldn't be shooting in a game. Because his whole offense, it revolved around, I mean it was well thought out and planned. Every time you was going to get a shot, he was going to get you an open shot and you was expected to make that open shot. And, and that's how he worked. I mean he worked on percentages and like Richie will tell you, I mean it was very effective and especially when you've got guys that can, can do it.
Richie Farmer
Well, he took people and put them in positions and, and you know that's, that was where they did stuff from that position. Everybody had a role and you know, you learn to play that role. But if your, if your shots were coming from, you know, two to eight feet from the basket, if he goes by and sees you shooting threes, he's going to come down there and ask you, he said, how many times you going to shoot that shot in the game? You could just, I mean you couldn't hardly even act a fool around him. You know, just playing around, shooting from the center line or whatever it was, it was just crazy buck and I've done that a few times. But yeah, throw the left handed hook on him from three quarter court, you.
Buck Stivers
Make two in a row. Yeah. I said, you'll never do that again. And he throwed it up there and hit it again. Hit it again.
Drew Franklin
Sounds about right. Doesn't think growing up with like the guy they can like, is this the best. You can't beat him in anything.
Buck Stivers
Yeah, well, we, he didn't win that much at home.
Caller
Now.
Drew Franklin
Okay, I forgot, yeah, you're blocking his shot. You had the size of him.
Ryan Lemon
Before we get away from the Rock Oliver story, I gotta ask you, what was your relationship like with him after that then was he still as hard on you or did things change after that incident?
Richie Farmer
Well, Rock and I were always, we, we had a good relationship. I mean I think that we spent so much time together we had to like each other. But he still work you as hard? Well, I think that he, you know, Coach Pitino told me, he said, you know, I should have called him off and I didn't. You know, he was taking the heat you know, because he said I had him pushing you, and you were doing good. You were doing what you were supposed to, and I forgot to call him off. Well, he just kept on and. But. But he took. You know, he took the blame for it. But Rock Oliver and I, I mean, you know, we always had a great relationship. He. Rock was.
Drew Franklin
He's still around.
Richie Farmer
Oh, he's still around.
Drew Franklin
Still looks the same.
Richie Farmer
Still looks.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Buck Stivers
When they hired Pope, we was down there. He made Richie Do20 push ups.
Drew Franklin
It's neat hearing these stories. We'll have more coming up. It was nice confirming that Richie's career got restored in Rick Pitino's basement. And I tell you what, if your basement needs restoration, how about calling pro number one in cleanup and restoration? Whether it's muddle bars, storm, or water damage, we've got a pro for that. We're the ones who make. Make it like it never happened. Franchise locations all across Kentucky. And franchises are independently owned and operated. They're also big time sponsors in baseball with the Reds. In golf, the official cleaning and restoration company, the PGA Tour. Even though the Ryder cup didn't go well, servpro is a big golf sponsor. They're in the Fighters challenge league. The 20 U.S. national champion and overall fastest female record holder. Sarah McGill is from the Lexington Fire Department. Sponsored by ServPro. They're everywhere, and they can help clean up again, whether mold, fire, storm, or water damage. There's a pro for that. It's all at servpro. We'll be right back after this. Welcome back, ksr. Drew Franklin.
Ryan Lemon
Shannon played the same song.
Drew Franklin
I was like, wait a minute, Did I zone out? Thank you. First, Drew Franklin, Brian Lemon, Richie Farmer, Buck Stivers. We're at KS Barn Grill. For a second there, guys, I thought I zoned out because I thought it was still the commercial. And Shannon yells, go. Nice little trick there, Shannon. That commercial, we were saying, it gets us every time we throw our headsets on. We feel like we're coming back. But Shannon actually punked me and played.
Shannon
The song as the Ramon song.
Drew Franklin
Oh, I would still be sitting here staring out at Broadway, just watching cars go by. All right, we're back. 859-280-2287. We got lots more fun stories coming from Richie and Buck, but Shannon, let's knock out a few phone calls.
Shannon
All right, let's start with Baker.
Drew Franklin
Baker, thanks for calling in.
Caller
Got a question for Richie. Behind the scenes story of Bobby Keith.
Drew Franklin
And do you wish he coached Trey?
Richie Farmer
Oh, my gosh, Yeah. I would have Loved to have had him coach my son, but I don't know, there's. There's a lot of Bobby Keith stories, but I can't think of anything right off hand that, you know, that people would like to hear. But sometimes when people, you know, remind you of something that happened, then you can tell the behind the scenes. But. But to my son, Trey, you know, he was six, four and a quarter. You know, he could. He could handle the ball decent, but he was a great shooter and he had unlimited range, but he could pull up, he could go right, left. I mean, he could do it all. And if he would have played for Bobby Keith, I think he could have been something special. I told you. Yeah, he had the ability to make them forget about me. He could have, you know, he could have played anywhere.
Drew Franklin
I was at some of those games where he was making his. Trying to make his run to the sweet 16. What was it like being a dad in the crowd? You know, you've got your own legendary Sweet 16 career, but was it hard to sit there watching him play for Clay County?
Richie Farmer
Much harder sitting in the. In the stands as, you know, as a dad than it is to be out there. Because out on the floor, you know, I felt like that I had control. I could, you know, I could do something about it. Over there, you're just, you know, you have no control and. But. But his. His one time that he played, you know, they played Cub Cath, and. And, you know, they lost. I want to say they lost by two, but had them. Should have beat them, actually should have beat him. But Trey had, I think, 19 points, 11 rebounds, you know, had a nice game. He was just a sophomore that year, so he was a nice player. He went to West Alabama and didn't stay but a semester and didn't work out, so. But he could have played somewhere.
Drew Franklin
Let's get another call in Shannon, Bob and Jamestown. Yeah, Bob, you can say whatever you want with me here. What's going on, Bob?
Caller
Spent much time down there on the lake, Jamestown?
Richie Farmer
Well, I've been. I've been down there a few times. I haven't been down there in a while, though. Most of the time when I go to Lake Cumberland, I go over to Conley Bottom or Lee. Lee's Ford or somewhere over there and on the Somerset side, but. But certainly a beautiful lake.
Caller
Well, the west end is the best end. Of course. We got down there 76. That's a nice party spot. But then up there at the other end of Party Cove, up on the South Fork. Anyway, that was a great story you had about Patino. I mean, I know it's one of the challenges in your life, what you were facing, that whether to stay or. But we're glad you stayed. Good talking to you, Richie.
Richie Farmer
Yeah, thanks, Bob. I appreciate your call. That means a whole lot. And you know, growing up and as a kid, I mean, I can remember just dreaming of having the opportunity to play at Kentucky and you know, I was one of the very fortunate few that got an opportunity to live that. And, you know, I was very blessed and I thankful every day we're gonna.
Drew Franklin
Hear a lot more stories from these guys. Ron, I appreciate you booking another good guest for us. What we got tomorrow, big show coming up.
Ryan Lemon
Well, tomorrow we've done a show at my house. We've done a show at your house. We've done a show at Matt's house. Tomorrow for the first time, we're doing a show at Shannon's house. And he's man cave in Mount Washington.
Richie Farmer
I love it.
Drew Franklin
Shannon's gonna drive the show. Don't spoil your topics. But how much of it is alien based?
Shannon
Oh, I don't have any topics yet. What are you talking about? You guys have topics for these shows? No, I have nothing written down yet. I have no idea what we're going to talk about. But you know, listen tomorrow and we'll figure it out as we go. That's one of the things about this show. We kind of just. Just riff and, you know, we never know what direction the show is going into. So what do you guys want for breakfast tomorrow? Do you have any requests? Should I get donuts? I know, no donuts. No donuts.
Drew Franklin
I was going to ask. It's close to the public, but do we have full access to your fridge while we're there? I might just stay all day.
Shannon
Yeah, yeah, Plenty of shit in the dudes brewing there. You know, Just pace yourself.
Ryan Lemon
And did save any of those country ham biscuits from ham days?
Shannon
Oh, no, no, no, they're long gone.

Hour 1 of the September 30, 2025, KSR episode is packed with both heartfelt and hilarious moments. Richie Farmer’s raw, vulnerable account of his near-departure from UK basketball offers an exclusive look behind the curtain of Kentucky sports lore. Lighter fare—including reminiscences about growing up in Clay County, home-cooked garage basketball, and hometown sports support—rounds out a show that’s as much about community as competition. The episode perfectly blends nostalgia, inside stories, and live local color, all in KSR’s distinctively irreverent, warm-hearted style.
