Our number two Kentucky sports radio 859-280-2287 here at the KSR Somerset Golf Scramble got the speaker working so hopefully I'll be able to play something for you. I'm excited to play a little bit later in the hour. We're going to go to the phones here in just a second. One person write Matt, if Cutter bowl is your starter by week three and you went into the portal and paid over a million dollars for your quarterback, then you screwed up on the portal. Thank that's fair. That's completely fair. If you're already getting rid of your quarterback after week two, then you pick the wrong quarterback. I mean, that's just, that's just a. That's a fact. I mean, they've been, you know, depend. They've. They've. Either one of two things is true. Either they've had the wrong offensive coordinators and they don't have a good offensive plan, or. Or they've gone three years in a row without picking the right quarterback and you can decide which one it is. I tend to do the offensive coordinators because, you know, Devin Leary made an NFL team, so he can't be that bad. And then Brock Vandergriff quit football and. And Zach Calzada at one point beat Alabama. So some of it is. I, I think it's more coordinator based, at least to me.
Shannon Dawson
I think so, too. Calzada has not been good on his own so far. I mean, he missed a little screen pass through it at his feet. Plenty of missed throws on Calzada. He looks like he's seeing ghosts out there, but I feel a little bad for him when before the play he's yelling, what the bleep are we doing? And his receivers can't get in position and they're running plays that put him in position to take a safety like last week or some of these play calls he's getting. Yes, he's missing throws, but at the same time, I don't know that we're exactly setting him up to succeed.
Matt Jones
I think it's the best way to put it. He. I don't think he's great, but I also don't think we're setting him up to succeed. And that combination, Shannon, is not good.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. I mean, organization is the most simplicity. It's the simple, most simple thing that you can do when it comes to running your offense. And they seem to have none of that. And it all goes back, I think, to the offensive coordinators. How many have we had now since Stoops has been here? A lot more than I can even, by the way.
Matt Jones
Also, I don't think we, we. We necessarily appreciate our offensive line is the third most experienced offensive line in all of college football.
Drew Franklin
I saw that stat.
Matt Jones
So it's not like we're like a bunch of kids. This is the third most experienced offensive line in terms of games played in all of college football.
Drew Franklin
And the first through the first two games, I think everybody's pretty happy with the way the offensive line is played. You know, no really major mistakes. A running game has been pretty well done pretty well the last two games, especially against an SEC defense. But you talk about the transfer, your big money guy, Calzada. Last year your big money guys were chip training and Vandergriff. Year before that, your big money guy was Devin Leary. I mean, it's just they keep missing on their transfer portal guys and they just can't do that.
Matt Jones
Can we say one thing that's good. Seth McGowan's really good. That's a really good runner. I mean, that's the kind of dude you want. Takes a hit, gets a few more yards. He is, he's a stud. But just this morning, the new episode of the NFL Cover Zero podcast with me and Drew came out. Please listen to it today. I think you'll like it. But I'll do a little behind the scenes story. So. So the NFL wants us to tape this on Sunday nights after the night game is over. And that's pretty late, right? So it's usually over 11:15, 11:30. So we've made a decision as a, as a family, me, Drew, Billy and Mario, we're gonna get to the studio at halftime of the, of the night game so that during the second half we can discuss what we're gonna do. And then as the moment the game's over, we can start. So we get down there. 10, nine minutes to go. Baltimore's up 15. They get the ball back on an interception. Shannon, I think, well, game's over. They're good, right? Right. They're up 15. They got the ball with nine minutes to go. Buffalo has not been able to stop them. Let's start the show.
Drew Franklin
Why not?
Matt Jones
So we start the show. We lead with that game because it's the biggest game. You know, we're talking about it, we're making good points. Lamar Jackson, Derek Henry. We get in, we start moving to the other games. We're like four games in and all of a sudden I see on Billy's face and I've seen it before, there's a look of panic. You can just see, you can see on his face. I'm Billy and I'm panicking and I. And he grabs the remote and I went, I even knew. I was like, I think I know what's happening. And then we turned it on and it's 40 to 38 and Buffalo's driving. You know, if we were live, which we're going to be in a few weeks after I get back from South Africa, we probably would have just kept going. But, you know, I mean, it wouldn't make sense if we started a podcast and we said baltimore one. So we just have to stop and then we just have to start over. Like, the first 30 minutes are gone. So that will be somewhere in the ether of the archives of KSR is the first 30 minutes of the podcast. I actually think the second version was better than the first, so I think it's fine. But we ended up going home at 1 in the morning because we literally got 30 minutes into it. And then stupid Buffalo came back.
Ryan Lemond
And it's week one for you guys, too. Rookie mistake. And that is really one of the most KSR things that could happen, right?
Matt Jones
Most KSR curse thing imaginable. You're. You go, well, this game's over. And then you. I wish I had a camera on Billy. He. I could see his panic. He's like, oh, no. And then there. There you go.
Drew Franklin
Football gods didn't like you guys starting that a little early before the game was over, did they?
Matt Jones
We're not gonna be able to do that in future, Drew. I think we're just going to have to wait it out just in case.
Shannon Dawson
Pretty unique circumstances there. And it wasn't just that we mentioned the game. We talked about the impact on the playoffs.
Matt Jones
You may listen when you listen to the podcast, let's see if you catch the moment. So we did 30 minutes and I was like, there's about 10 minutes I think we can salvage. And we left it in. As I was driving down here this morning, there's at least one thing on there that probably we shouldn't have left in because. Because it's basically assuming Baltimore won and that's going to sound stupid. So when you listen, you might hear one moment that goes, yeah, they probably should take your call.
Ryan Lemond
Cover zero. You literally don't even watch the games. According to the podcast, we watch the games.
Matt Jones
We turned it off to start. Now, I will say, as we were talking about the comeback, we had to be vague, Ryan, because we didn't really know what happened during the comeback because we had the television off.
Drew Franklin
But on the. On the good side, you guys nailed all the other games that had finished.
Shannon Dawson
People really wanted our Commander's Giants too.
Matt Jones
The other games were completely good.
Shannon Dawson
Matt did another big impersonation. Now I think we have a new bit. This is two straight weeks of only two weeks where Matt has done a new impersonation.
Matt Jones
And they're good. I did a Chris Collinsworth when. When Josh Allen and makes a good play. He and Lamar Jackson. I'm not going to do it on the public airwaves because it's. But I think it's a pretty good impression because you know, he gets excited, he starts grunting and he starts moving moaning.
Shannon Dawson
Last week was Dan Campbell, now Collinsworth.
Matt Jones
So you're gonna hear a side of Matt Jones maybe you haven't heard before if you listen to this week's but please subscribe. Like it with the stars. They are, they seem very happy so far and we're not fired yet, so we're pretty good now. However, starting with our next show, I'm on the road and then we'll see if I'm able next Sunday to connect in Johannesburg, South Africa after having not watched the games at all.
Drew Franklin
Ryan well, that's what the magic of Google's for. You can Google up and we'll throw some information for you and let you kind of.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I like it. 859-280-2287 Let me give a shout out to something positive of UK Sports. UK Volleyball goes on the road, plays top five. Penn State beats them in three straight sets and dominates the game. They had a huge crowd. They ended up, it basically was dead on national tv again on Fox. They were playing on network television and they win. That means they have played two teams in the top five essentially in road games back to back and have won the first two sets in both games, won the game against Penn State. They're going to end up ranked probably number three in the country. Craig Skinner, Drew, has a national championship contender. We have. I mean, that's something to be excited about going forward.
Shannon Dawson
Yeah, you spoiled Penn State's fun up there. They had a big banner night, big celebration.
Matt Jones
If, yeah, they hung their banner.
Shannon Dawson
If you'd, if you had held on against Nebraska on Sunday, Penn State would have been one and you would have beaten the number one team twice in one week, being unheard of in about any sport.
Matt Jones
But still, they probably would have been. We probably would have been number one if we hung out.
Shannon Dawson
But a huge, huge win. Looks like Skinner's loaded up again. We know they've had a good hold on the conference for a long time, but it looks like they're going to be a national contender this season.
Ryan Lemond
Just makes that Nebraska game, that loss that much tougher. You're up to, oh, on Nebraska and have a chance to just sweep them and then you, you, you lose that game, they come back and beat you.
Matt Jones
Craig Skinner, basically, if you look at the top eight teams in the country, that's not Kentucky. He scheduled five of them. So he's making it to where we're going. Because in the sec, volleyball is the one sport that the SEC does do as well, so like we'll run through the sec. Florida's the only other team that's good. So he's playing this non conference schedule, Ryan, and so far doing well.
Drew Franklin
I love it. You know, so many coaches, they, early in the conference season, non conference season, they want to play these cupcakes. He's like, hell no. We're going to go after the big boys, big girls and we're going to show them what we're made of. He they're definitely the best team on campus. We don't talk about them enough. They deserve all the recognition they're getting right now.
Matt Jones
And next year these teams they played are coming here. So I don't know what if you're going to have a next year home schedule, but they'll probably have like the best volleyball home schedule next year of any team in the country. Who's next? Dennis is next. Dennis. Go ahead, Dennis.
Caller
Hey, can I make a, a comment question about the, the video. Whoever operates that before.
Matt Jones
Of course you can.
Caller
On the game here. The video. I'll tell you what, this video, whoever operates the video on big board. Horrible. Every time we go on defense, they start the stupid blue white chant on the video board. You're killing.
Matt Jones
I've heard, I've heard more complaints about the blue white chant. I didn't realize that was such a big deal to people, but it was. I did hear it on the game broadcast and it did seem like I'm with you. Maybe we retire that for when it's loud.
Caller
I mean when you're doing the blue white chance, you actually have a gap there between the blue and white, which gives their offense, you know, they can communicate. It's a horrible chance. People are looking at the video boards, looking at the, at the play on the field.
Matt Jones
It's.
Caller
I don't know who's operating it, but they, they, they need some help as far as the game. If you listen to Van Hals, during Tom Leach, obviously the quarterback, quarterback play kind of caused us that game because according to Van Hals, he. There were some wide receivers schemed open during that game and we just missed them.
Matt Jones
Well, and that may be right. He would know better than me. And by the way, while I'm gone, and we are going to have, we were planning this last week. While I'm gone, they're going to have a lot of guests folks on here. Van Hiles is going to be on the show one day. You know, Jack Givens, Richie Farmer, there's going to be during my two and a half weeks gone you're gonna not have to hear my voice, but you will hear a lot of voices around UK sports that you don't hear as much on this show. They're each going to be doing guest appearances on this, so hopefully folks will enjoy it. And Van Hyles will be one of those. So what was your second thing?
Caller
That one's good. I think Stoops gets a lot of bad rap for the offense coordinators for the number he's had. Liam Cohen was here twice and left for NFL jobs. That's two times. Then you've got Eddie grand. That was basically ran out of here pretty much by the fans, in my opinion, because in my opinion, that year with the. Lynn Bowden, that's. To me, that's.
Matt Jones
That was impressive.
Caller
He could probably get the best job as OC that year.
Matt Jones
Now, Eddie grand and I appreciate the call. Eddie Grand. I think in hindsight, Ryan Lemon, we might have. We might have. As a fan base, we might wish Eddie was still here, to be honest with you, because he. He actually. We won most of the time he was here.
Drew Franklin
How many times on a Monday morning show like this since Eddie Grant has left, we talk about the same issues Kentucky's been having on offense.
Matt Jones
And Eddie didn't have those.
Drew Franklin
Didn't have those when he was here. But ever since he left, like so many Monday mornings, we discuss poor clock management, poor offensive schemes for play calling. You know, the same thing over and over and over.
Matt Jones
We talked about this on Cover Zero, but Shannon, Liam Cohen, his owner is named. It's Tony Khan's dad. It's something Khan. And he has a mustache. That's an amazing mustache. And there's a post game locker room video. Liam Cohen wins his first game as coach of the Jaguars, and he hands Liam Cohen the ball and he goes, starting today, we win forever. Which I thought was a great line. He was like, we win forever.
Ryan Lemond
Such a strange dude. But he. I mean, he's pretty good offensive coordinator.
Matt Jones
Well, no, the owner said it to Liam.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, okay.
Matt Jones
But I think there's a lot of pressure saying Liam's going to have to win for the rest of time.
Shannon Dawson
If I'm calling, I'm like, I hope this isn't written in my contract. We're the Jaguars. I know we get to play the Titans twice, but I can't win every game.
Matt Jones
He thinks they're winning forever. Who's next?
Drew Franklin
Got bluegrass up next.
Matt Jones
Bluegrass. I got a minute. Go ahead.
Caller
All right, fellas. I just. I need to take a look at it. I need to take a Look at what I do. I'm in a mountain all day breaking my back. Then I traveled down there to Lexington, I'm feeding my kids, I'm spending four or five hundred dollars. When is, when is enough enough, Matt? I mean I love this team. I don't want to give up on the team but you asked me to do the same thing every weekend and where am I benefiting from this at all?
Matt Jones
Well, I went into great detail on the post game show. I won't repeat it here but you can hear it on podcast and it was that exact point and I appreciate the call. The short version is you go to a UK game with your family. That is a $500 or more investment. We ask people to do it in the school. The program has got to start giving it back. Whether it is as an experience or or winning. It has to start becoming a reward. Cuz or otherwise you're going to see people start to say the investment is not worth it. And you know when you sit there and think about driving the whole way to get there, eating before going to the game and the tickets, eating after, anything you get while you're there coming back, that is a for some families that might be $11,000 on a particular day. Then you're asked to do it six or seven times during the year. You're gonna have to start giving something to for people back or they're gonna say I got other things that I can do. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio 859-280-2287. Text machine is 772-75254. By the way, the Texas I always forget Texas in the sec. Also very good at volleyball. They're actually ranked number two now, so we'll get a chance. So now they're going to play six of the top 10 because they will get Texas as well.
Shannon Dawson
Drew Skinner's not afraid. I mean Cal would famously say anytime, anywhere and now Pope saying he wants it all. Skinner's actually living it. The best programs out there, he wants them on the schedule.
Matt Jones
I love it. That's good. Let's talk about KSR parlay. Nearly hit for the second week in a row. Let's sit there and say, all right, we started the day Illinois over duke. Easy win minus two and a half. They won 4519. It was a little bit closer for Drew, but he got his, what was it?
Shannon Dawson
Michigan State.
Matt Jones
We needed ot got it over teeth in late at night. Washington State listening to my man Shannon held on against San Diego State. That game finished at 1.48 in the morning. Could have been back to back KSR parlays, but Ryan Lemon led a big dud when he bet on West Virginia. Boop boopy.
Ryan Lemond
Dude, what do you have to say for yourself? I lost money because of you. You owe me $5.
Drew Franklin
I, I felt so good about that pick. Maybe that's why it didn't win.
Matt Jones
I feel literally if we, if you had won that we would guarantee to be up for the year two and zero. We would be, we'd be two zero and we would guarantee a positive result for the year if you had just won. I mean I can't keep picking all these winners. If you' lose.
Drew Franklin
I feel like we're all going to bounce back next week. Next week.
Shannon Dawson
There are three undefeated people at this time.
Matt Jones
That's exactly right. Three of us are two zero.
Drew Franklin
So seven out of eight picks to start the season.
Matt Jones
That is good though. Seven out of eight picks. I mean I'd like there's people out there charging money for their picks. Drew that haven't gotten seven out of eight.
Caller
Yeah.
Shannon Dawson
What do we make them do to punishment?
Matt Jones
Well, just don't do your homework.
Drew Franklin
The fighting Rich Barnharts got me. Ohio beat West Virginia. So, yeah, fighting Jennifer.
Matt Jones
Pretty. Pretty bad at football. Let's a couple other little things that happened. North Carolina. Bill Belichick says, hey, Patriots people, you cannot come to the game. They win the game, they go to Charlotte and they win. So good for him. But what do you think about the University of Charlotte? They on the Jumbotron had a Gold Digger Cam. Love it. Just showed women in the crowd with men and said that they had the gold digger Cam. Is that fair, Shannon?
Ryan Lemond
Absolutely, it's fair. Any chance you have to troll your opponent, you should do it. And I think that is a very creative way to troll Bill Belichick.
Matt Jones
You think that's okay?
Ryan Lemond
Absolutely.
Matt Jones
All right. What about you?
Drew Franklin
Absolutely. I don't care if the Duke Blue Devils want to do a Gold Digger Cam. Everybody should do a Gold Digger Cam.
Ryan Lemond
Well, it's already been done now.
Matt Jones
It's already done now. It wouldn't be as cool.
Shannon Dawson
But, yeah, I'm enjoying all of this, and he deserves all this. But there is a little part of me that's like the great Bill Belichick is going out as a joke. Like, everyone is making.
Ryan Lemond
Hey, at least he's happy. I know, but I mean, I'm happy that he's happy. I'm happy for him.
Shannon Dawson
This guy that ran like, he's very.
Matt Jones
Pro, the whole thing.
Ryan Lemond
Look, man, my guy Bill has all the money in the world, and he's got it. He deserves to be happy at this point in his life. He's an old man now. He doesn't care if he wins or loses at North Carolina. He's got. He's got George.
Shannon Dawson
We hear so much about the Patriots way. It was like a military operation in there. He's one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time, and now we're watching him. His girlfriend in her disco pants is, like, tugging on his shirt on the sideline, wanting money to go to the concession stand.
Matt Jones
It is.
Shannon Dawson
It's just sad to see him go out like this.
Ryan Lemond
I respect it.
Matt Jones
I'm kind of with Shannon, though, in the sense of, if he's happy, what do you care? I mean, like, if he's. If. If he's ha. If he's happy, what then? Then it is what it is.
Ryan Lemond
Who are we?
Matt Jones
You know, are we. Florida loses at home to South Florida their next four games are all against teams ranked in the top 12. Florida plays Georgia, LSU, Miami, and Texas A&M. In their next four games, they lose to South Florida. Ryan. I don't know if I'd want to be Billy Napier by the time they get to us, they might have. Their season might have already collapsed in November.
Drew Franklin
You know, he was on the hot seat last year. Then they kicked Kentucky's butt. Kind of jump started them pretty well.
Matt Jones
Played pretty well.
Drew Franklin
Played pretty well. Then kind of played pretty well the rest of the season. On the hot seat again. I don't know he can survive a second year of this debacle.
Matt Jones
Well, he was. They were terrible two years ago and then it looked like last year. But you're right, they beat us and then kind of went on a run through to the Z. Survived this one. I mean, they, they have this. They had the hardest schedule in the country before losing to South Florida.
Shannon Dawson
This has been my. My best take all year. I think Kentucky's going to win that game in November. And now when they're losing to South Florida at home early, feeling even better. I made one futures bet in college football.
Caller
One.
Shannon Dawson
And it was the Florida under because it was seven and a half. I don't think they're good. And I don't think Billy and April will be there at the end of the year. And it has already started to crumble and we're not even to the middle of September yet.
Matt Jones
So one more. You like trolling, Shannon?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Oklahoma State played Oregon and Mike Gundy during the off season was like, Oregon's got all this money, you know, they think they can just buy their way to a national championship. They get all these players, we're working hard, blah, blah, blah. So they play on Saturday. Oregon beats Oklahoma State 69 to 3. And during the fourth quarter, while up 69 to 3 every break, they just play. Come on, come on. Listen to the money talk. They do it the entire fourth quarter. Do you like that?
Ryan Lemond
I do. If I were in charge of the music, I would probably be doing the same thing. So I. I love it.
Matt Jones
See, I just wonder. I think that's hilarious. Could you ever see a world that Mitch Barnhart would let our people troll? Like, no, no.
Drew Franklin
Be respectful to the opponent.
Matt Jones
I think the Money Talks is pretty hilarious, especially since Gundy started it right with all of his comments. Who's up next?
Drew Franklin
Brett is next.
Matt Jones
Brett. Go ahead, Brett.
Caller
I just want to think about how much joy we got when we switched to zone in the Duke basketball game. I don't think it's too much to ask for our offensive coaching staff in football to make a simple adjustment like that that they keep playing the same offensive scheme the entire game. It's like he scripted the entire game. And if Ole Miss's quarterback throws two picks in the first quarter and their complete offensive philosophy changes that they.
Matt Jones
You're exactly right.
Caller
They do more quarterback run. Like I don't think it's too much to ask just for some simple.
Matt Jones
You are exactly right. That's a great point and I appreciate the call. Lane Kiffin saw that their game plan wasn't working, adjusted it, started adding in more quarterback run and their offense started to click. We just don't do that a lot. We just, you don't see those mid game adjustments. That changes the way we play very often with our football team. We'll take a break and be right back. We're going to play something I think you're really going to like next on Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio. A beautiful day here in Somerset for the Somerset golf scramble, folks. Eating lunch. It is gorgeous. Little chilly outside but otherwise ready to go. If you're gonna play golf, this better than being suffocating in heat. Tomorrow we are in Lebanon at the Cornbread Hemp. Cornbread Hemp Field. You if you're in the area, you're welcome to go. What's the address? Mario? Billy, you know the address. He's on the phone. We'll figure it out. But you it'll be online. But we are at the Cornbread Hemp facility there outside. It's kind of cool. You'll see where it's all grown. It's. I'm looking forward. I've been the one in Lexington, but not the one there. One person writes on the text machine. Matt up into every UK home football game but two since 1976.
Caller
Wow.
Matt Jones
I've seen some terrible football. But I have to tell you, Saturday frustrated me as much as any game I've ever been to from being disorganized, no cell service, crappy game atmosphere. The good thing about Mark Stoops, he's brought to me the point that when I walk in the gates, I feel we have a chance. However, the disorganization and lack of fundamentals is brutal. I'm gonna go Saturday to see Cutter, but if we don't improve by the time we come back home next week, I'm done. I'd rather just watch at home because in college football games last forever. Anything about that that's that is the kind of Comment UK needs to listen to because I get literally dozens of those a week. They're real. And like, the folks at UK can go, oh, it's just Matt Whine and Burberry. But it's the. It's real. It's what is out there, Drew. And that's just one example.
Shannon Dawson
And what decades. What do you say? 70s.
Matt Jones
76.
Shannon Dawson
76. Missed two games. Just shows you how bad it's gotten. And they're right about the atmosphere. Last week was worse. I'll give them a little credit on this. I think they brought my guy Warren Peace back. There was a little more upbeat music was better. Grocery was back. But still, still just overall, it's. It's not good. I know you mentioned Auburn and we can't be Auburn. I get it. But you see some of these other schools and it's like, we're not even in the same conference as them when it comes to some of this stuff.
Ryan Lemond
It's one thing to lose a casual fan, but when you lose somebody that's been a fan to that degree for so long, that's a problem.
Matt Jones
By the way, UK Athletics send out a bunch of social media things saying, yeah, playing Grove street, like, well, you didn't play it the week before. I mean, it's. It's not a. You know, you didn't.
Ryan Lemond
They didn't get the right situation for calling it out. There wasn't the right situation.
Matt Jones
It was crazy. People were happy when they. When they played it. One person writes, Matt, do you think it was rude that Ole Miss fans did a chant during My Old Kentucky Home? I talked about this on the postgame show. Honestly, No. I mean, what, like, that's our song, but why should they care about it?
Ryan Lemond
Yep.
Matt Jones
I mean, it's not. Again, our state songs. My old Kentucky home. But Tennessee State song is Rocky Top. Are you going to be respectful to Rocky Top just because it's their state song?
Shannon Dawson
I do catch chance over the other team stuff.
Drew Franklin
If I'm somewhere, how many times on the road do we hear go Big Blue. While the other we brag about.
Matt Jones
Yeah, so, like, we take over. I mean, we treat my old Kentucky home like it's the national anthem to us. And I do, too. I love it. But you can't expect people that have no connection to it to do it. It's not like the national anthem. So, I mean, I. I can't be mad at him about it. But you got to be so good that they don't have anything to cheer about.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, it's embarrassing that they're louder than. Than us singing that.
Shannon Dawson
I know this about Ole Miss fans when I on my walk back. If you. Ole Miss fans over the age of 25, a lot of fun, gracious love, Lexington, under 25. They were looking for trouble. And it wasn't a small group. I wouldn't be shocked if there were some stories of fisticuffs after that game because the Ole Miss kind of the fratty college crowd, they were going around looking for trouble out in that parking lot.
Matt Jones
They could have come to me. They'd have gotten right.
Ryan Lemond
They could have gotten their picture taken.
Matt Jones
All right, I want to play something. You may remember the story I talked about last week where the woman in Whitesburg, she found a drunk raccoon in a dumpster and she gave it CPR and saved its life. You remember that? No. What? Okay.
Ryan Lemond
No, I don't remember. That's quite a lot.
Drew Franklin
Great story.
Matt Jones
Well, that's the story. It's a woman finds a drunk raccoon in a. In a dumpster. Dumpster pulls it out, gives it CPR and saves its life.
Ryan Lemond
I don't even believe that.
Matt Jones
In Kentucky. In Kentucky. So on ESPN for Matt Myon, we're now going to. We're going back to having a celebrity guest picker. Every week we pick a celebrity. I thought, who's better for week one than the woman who did it perfect than the woman from Kentucky who saved the. The drunk raccoon that was in the dumpster? So we had her on. And it's one of my favorite things I've ever heard. And I couldn't just leave it to the national audience. I have to play it for our Kentucky folks. This is Misty Combs from Letcher County. Remember, this is on national radio. And I have to tell you, I've done a lot of interviews on ESPN. I never got more response. ESPN's thinking about putting it out as a clip today. We'll see if they do it, but either way, I'm playing it on this show. Here is my interview. And listen for Myron giggling in the background during this whole thing. Here's Misty, the woman who saved the drunk raccoon from Letcher County, Kentucky. Misty, how are you?
Misty Combs
I am great. How are you all?
Matt Jones
I'm doing wonderful, Misty. Now, I read the story. You this week found a drunk raccoon in a dumpster and you gave it cpr. It's an amazing headline, but give me quickly some details.
Misty Combs
So the raccoon I found in a dumpster and it had got so drunk it had fell over into some water, and it had drowned. And I was able to get it out of the dumpster, and it was dead or close to dead. It was not breathing. So I did CPR on it, and I was able to bring it back to life. And it's living now.
Matt Jones
That's awesome. Now let's go through. Do we know how it got drunk? How did it get drunk?
Misty Combs
So the dumpster was at a moonshine distillery, and they had put their fermented peaches in that dumpster, and it had got in there with one of its siblings, and it had eight. Those peaches, apparently all night until it had got so drunk it couldn't eat anymore.
Matt Jones
You like that, Myron? That happens sometimes. Amazing. It's an amazing story. All right, so you see the drunk peach eating raccoon in the dumpster. Most people would see that and just keep walking. What made you decide to save it?
Misty Combs
Well, I'm a nurse, and I'm also a mother, and it's mom was standing close by, and she was making, like, some chitter chatter noise. And I think she was trying to get our attention, like she wanted us to help it. And, I mean, I'm an animal lover. So I went over there and I got it, and I just started doing chest compressions and beating on its back a little to get that water out of its lungs, and it. It finally started breathing again.
Matt Jones
This is my favorite part. So you did CPR on a raccoon?
Misty Combs
I did. I did.
Matt Jones
That is awesome. Misty, seriously, you are a saint. No one else would do that. So once it was over, did it. Thank you.
Misty Combs
Well, it was still drunk, so it slept the rest of the day, and we sent it to the vet. The feed came and got it, but they brought it back to me the next day. I was sort of shocked they did that, and I got to turn it loose back where its mom lives there at the health department that I work at.
Matt Jones
That is awesome. Well, good. I loved it. You can stop it, Rick. You can stop it right there. Well, it was still drunk. There you go.
Ryan Lemond
I've had some nights on moonshine. I feel like I kind of relate to this raccoon a little bit. Now, CPR would also imply mouth to mouth.
Matt Jones
New mouth to mouth, Just chest compression. And then according to her, I don't know if this is scientific CPR beating on its back.
Ryan Lemond
It worked, though.
Matt Jones
I don't know if that's. If it's textbook, but I like it. Right.
Drew Franklin
She acts like that's a regular occurrence in Letcher county, act like you just do in Ledger County.
Matt Jones
I loved it. I drew. Absolutely love the story. I do too. Absolutely love Misty. And I love that she got to be on national radio. At first my producers called her and asked her if she would come on. She said no. She said, I'm not doing that. So then I was like, let me call her. So I called her and I was like, misty, come on. This will be fun. And she goes, I don't know anything about sports. And I said, who cares? Neither do I. Let's just do it. She then picked games with us. Shannon. Every game, she would pick the team. That was an animal.
Ryan Lemond
Well, that makes sense. That checks out. She's an animal lover.
Matt Jones
So I think it was like falcons, Bucks. And I said, who you got? And she goes, falcons. And I said, why? Well, it's a bird. Of course.
Ryan Lemond
I thought that she understands a buck's also an animal. Right, though.
Matt Jones
No, it's a buccaneer. It's like a pirate.
Ryan Lemond
Oh, yeah, yeah, you're right.
Matt Jones
Maybe you shouldn't act like you're so smart.
Ryan Lemond
I was thinking Milwaukee Bucks.
Matt Jones
It sounds like you think Milwaukee plays football.
Ryan Lemond
No, no.
Shannon Dawson
As good as the story was, her accent was the best part though. Her siblings.
Drew Franklin
How could you not love her after what you just heard? That story right there?
Matt Jones
I love her. And she. Letcher county should be very proud of a woman who sees a raccoon and says, you know what? I'm gonna save it.
Ryan Lemond
I love it.
Matt Jones
That is not something.
Ryan Lemond
That's the story of the year.
Shannon Dawson
She heard the chitter chatter from the mama. That's how she knew.
Drew Franklin
So they take her to the humane society, whatever. For it to sober up. It is like put in the drunk tank that says.
Ryan Lemond
You mean to say a 12 strap program.
Matt Jones

Drew Franklin
She knew brother and sister out just getting hammered.
Shannon Dawson
Seedling not siblings, sibling.
Matt Jones
We'll take a break. Be right back's KSR tired of spills.

Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-280-2287. It's Somerset Golf Scramble. 772-774-5254. We are a beautiful day here. Ready to play some golf. You're playing with what Drew Judge, Gabe Fleener and another Corey Corey team. He's ready to rock. And I'll be on 18 here with you. You ready to do some putting?
Drew Franklin
We'll probably knock down a few eagle putts for some people today.
Matt Jones
This is a reachable par five and with always a good time, you make about one putt a year.
Drew Franklin
I should be good for one putt. Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
Last scramble. He's one for one. Very first one. He should have stopped right there.
Drew Franklin
Just walked away.
Matt Jones
Should have walked away. 859-280-2287. Who's next?
Drew Franklin
Rick Flash is up next.
Matt Jones
Flash, go ahead.
Caller
Hey, Matt, do we think Bush Hampden got a hold of some of those Lichard County Peaches Saturday? I'm just trying to wrap my mind around what I witnessed. I'm gonna start negative, but I'm gonna end positive. So need to do a welfare checker. My boy Drew Franklin. I'm a fellow UK football and Tennessee Titans fan. So it was a rough weekend.
Shannon Dawson
Get used to the 02 weekends, brother.
Caller
Yeah, just another O&2 weekend. But this one hit a little differently just with the complete. Just coaching malpractice and incompetence. I just, I still, I'm in shock by what happened, but oddly positive because I think our biggest obstacle is not the opposing team or players. It's our damn coach staffs on both, with both teams. How, how an ACC coaching staff and NFL coaching staff. How can that happen?
Matt Jones
I, I, I'm with you. It's a great question, but it's happened, I appreciate the call. It's happened a lot. It's happened a lot over the last few years. And I don't know, you know, what is it? You keep doing the same thing over and over. It's the, what's it called? There's a saying about this.
Ryan Lemond
I can't think of it, but Definition of insanity.
Matt Jones
Definition of insanity. That's exactly right. It's doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. That's what's happened with us for a number of years. And I don't know that it's gonna, it's gonna stop. Hey, Rick, we got some breaking news. Look at that. UK releases its depth chart for Eastern Michigan and Zach Calzada is still listed as the starter. Now, as you, you noted in the break, that doesn't, sometimes they just don't update it, which, by the way, is a perfect example of how they're on top of things over there. So we'll see. Stoops says something different in the press conference, but at least for now, the official depth jart says Calzada gamesmanship right there.
Ryan Lemond
Eastern Michigan doesn't know what's going to come at him on Saturday. Yeah, I don't know why you wouldn't update that. I think Cutter Bowley clearly should be the starting quarter.
Matt Jones
What if it is Zach causad?
Drew Franklin
I don't think he's healthy enough to go this Saturday.
Matt Jones
What are you hearing? That sounds like a man who has some scuttlebutts.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, he's, he's got a shoulder injury. Like, even if he was number one, I don't think he could go this weekend.
Matt Jones
Wait a minute, hang on.
Shannon Dawson
We've been here for an hour and 50 minutes.
Matt Jones
By the way, just for the record, we've been here an hour and 15 minutes. 50 minutes.
Ryan Lemond
That's why I got to go out to the end of the show.
Matt Jones
Said what looks to be something he knows. Would you like to give us. Is this scoop or scuttlebutt?
Drew Franklin
I think just scuttlebutt.
Matt Jones
Scuttlebutt. And what is the scuttlebutt that Cutters.
Drew Franklin
It's Cutter's game. He's gonna start because Calzada I don't think is going to be healthy enough to go.
Matt Jones
So you're calling it. Cutter is starting.
Drew Franklin
I would be shocked if he if something different.
Matt Jones
And you're saying that Zach Calzada is hurt.
Drew Franklin
Hurt. His shoulders hurt. So I think they want to sit him out a week.
Matt Jones
So you're saying the depth chart's not correct?
Drew Franklin
It's not correct at all.
Matt Jones
Can I just ask a quick question?
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Why did you wait till now to say that?
Drew Franklin
I know we'd get to it eventually.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Shannon Dawson
With the three minutes left in the show.
Caller
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
You know, can't say everything, you know, in the first five minutes of the show. What else would you say?
Matt Jones
The rest of the show. Are you trying to make it like a novel with a secret twist at the end? It's.
Drew Franklin
Me, personally, I wish they'd have gone to Cutter in the second half. You come out at halftime, it's unbelievable. You got all half time to design an offense, and you come out and you get.
Matt Jones
I mean, you're. Three plays, three and a half unbelievable to me. Like, you didn't tell us that you were gonna. You just held that in this entire time.
Drew Franklin
Well, I think it was kind of understood. Everybody kind of.
Matt Jones
I don't think it was understood.
Drew Franklin
We started the show where you said, like Mark said, if we're going with Cutter, I want to see Cutter. Well, did you think it was understood?
Ryan Lemond
No, not entirely. I thought it was clear, though, that he would likely start, but I didn't have any inside scoop.
Matt Jones
But the hurt part.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I mean, you're saying that he's too hurt to play.
Drew Franklin
I think they just want to give him a week's rest.
Shannon Dawson
Maybe he can you figure your scuttle button.
Drew Franklin
I'm scuttle button.
Caller
All right.
Ryan Lemond
There's more. Really?
Matt Jones
I know you. I know how to read your brain. It's. It takes a translation, but I know that you know something. I cannot believe you waited till the end of the show. Who's next?
Drew Franklin
Chester is next.
Matt Jones
Chester. Go ahead, Chester.
Caller
Matt, I'm frustrated like everybody else, but I want to just say something, and I do think it is time for everybody in the big blue nation to look, look at it. Look. Look it over, Evaluate their heart about this, because here's the situation. There was four minutes to go in that game, Matt. We were down one possession. They had lost their starting quarterback. We're kicking the ball to them, going to their backup, and two thirds of the stadium walked out on them. You can say what you want to say about all the things that need to be changed, and I'll agree from the screens to the music, whatever it is, but one thing you cannot say is that those boys Quit. And I want to encourage everybody to look in the mirror. And if you, if you're going to quit on the cat, then yes, you should stay home. You should. Because those boys did not quit. There was eight seconds left. We had an onside kick that if we get it, we have a chance at the end zone to tie that game. And I'm just, I'm just saying we are a lot of negative things on here about this program and all this and that and. Fine, fine. We all need to get better. We all need to get better and we need to look ourselves in the mirror. Listen, if you, if you got, you've given your whole day, you went through the money, you got four minutes to go and we still got a chance to win it. Cutter Bowley coming in who everybody's complaining needs to be in there. And you're going to pick your stuff up and walk right out on them. That's somebody's pit down there. You're just walking, turning your back on them. Matt and I think that we need as a fan base, we can't be complaining about. Well, they didn't tweet about the players names. We don't know about them. We need to get over it. You're either in or you're out. You're a big blue or you're not.
Matt Jones
Appreciate the call to us.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, beautiful call. Call the day right there.
Matt Jones
Oh, so you agree?
Drew Franklin
I agree with him.
Matt Jones
Really? That's again the last. You haven't said that for the first hour and 55 minutes we empty the stadium.
Drew Franklin
We were still kind of in the game. Yeah, it had been frustrating, but you're still in the game. Why did everybody leave there towards the end?
Matt Jones
Yeah, it was odd but I mean I told, as I said the post game. I'm not criticizing the fans, I'm not for, for this but I chester given a good alternate opinion. Got about a minute quickly. Chest or next?
Drew Franklin
Tim is next.
Matt Jones
Tim. Go ahead, Tim.
Caller
Hey, Matt. Play that changed the whole complexion of the game. And that was the first quarter with fourth down in inches and they threw like a 30 yard completion.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Caller
One yard line and they scored. And that from that point on it was the whole.
Matt Jones
It was a great play. Great play. And I mentioned, I mentioned on the show and I appreciate the call. That's why Lane Kiffin is a great coach. He goes for it, but he doesn't just run up the middle, he throws it deep. That's why. That's the kind of chances you have to take. Kiffin wasn't scared. They end up winning the game. DraftKings bet five, get $300 in bonus bets. This is the last night to do that. Vikings and Bears. My Bears. Vikings are a one and a half point favorite in Chicago. They're honoring the 85 bears tonight. 40th anniversary. What you got?
Drew Franklin
They don't lose and they honor the 85 bears.
Matt Jones
Man, they didn't come here to start no shuffle. They're going to win tonight.
Ryan Lemond
They are going to lose tonight. Vikings win tonight.
Matt Jones
Vikings.
Shannon Dawson
I'm a believer in the Bears. Luther Burden. Watch out for him.
Matt Jones
We got it. My name is Sweetness and I like to dance and running the balls like Making romance tonight against the Vikings.
Drew Franklin
They can't lose.
Matt Jones
Thank you all very much. This is this has been the KSR at the Somerset Golf Scramble. We'll see you tomorrow in Lebanon.

Podcast: Kentucky Sports Radio (KSR)
Hosts: Matt Jones, Drew Franklin, Ryan Lemond, Shannon Dawson
Episode Date: September 8, 2025
Setting: Live at the KSR Somerset Golf Scramble
This hour dives into the current state and hot topics of University of Kentucky (UK) football, the fallout from recent disappointing games, struggles with the offense, and dedicated fan frustrations. The hosts mix in news from other UK sports, personal anecdotes, some humorous moments, and listener calls. Notably, Matt shares a viral Kentucky story involving a raccoon and local nurse-turned-hero, and the crew teases insider football lineup info as the segment closes. The tone is candid, humorous, and at times critical, but always loyal to the Big Blue Nation.
The episode is classic KSR: loyal but critical, candid and accessible, filled with Kentucky flavor, occasional ribbing among friends, and always tightly connected to the fan base’s emotional pulse. Skipping no opportunity to mix in laughter and stories, this hour is equal parts sports insight, community call-in show, and Kentucky culture celebration.
For long-time listeners and newcomers alike, this episode captures the tension of a football program at the crossroads, the value of UK’s lesser-talked-about sporting successes, and the quirky heart of Kentucky storytelling.
