This is Kentucky sports radio presented by Stockton mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Monday, October 13th. I am Matt Jones here on a beautiful day in Lexington, Kentucky. We are in studio. Raring to go. What are you laughing at? I'm raring to go.
Shannon
I'm raring to go. I'm always raring to go.
Matt Jones
And I were here to 1am we're still raring to go. Ready to rock. You could give us a shout out on the Clark's puppet shop phone line. I'm going to be picking the callers. 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254 in this dish and sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office. If you call TJ, he'll make them pay. A lot of stuff to get to tonight after a big weekend. Our last weekend with no games until April. Drew, you went to a wedding in Colorado. How was that?
Drew
Had a great time. I was a groomsman for my brother in law. Congrats to Michael and Becca but you know, little winded after got back late last night. Literally went from the airport to right here to do cover zero with you all.
Matt Jones
You came in hot, ready to rock. Congrats to Michael on his wedding. I think you said that. What was the theme of the wedding?
Drew
There wasn't really a theme, but I think you might be talking about how the Broncos played at 7am and everybody.
Matt Jones
Got up early in London.
Drew
Yeah, I wasn't being a part of that. It was just a nice. There wasn't really a theme but just a nice beautiful wedding. Black tux, bow tie to wear, tucks.
Shannon
Oh, yeah.
Drew
Oh, yeah. Busy day as a groomsman, though. I had a fun time.
Matt Jones
I have to put on pants today so I understand what you're going through. Yeah.
Shannon
What do you got?
Drew
Big day when you got to wear pants.
Matt Jones
Well, I mean like real pants with like buttons and a belt because I'm doing the Ford Center.
Shannon
Oh, it's right.
Matt Jones
Uk.
Shannon
That's right.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I'm not. I'm moderating yes.
Shannon
So get a haircut.
Matt Jones
No.
Shannon
Thought you might want to look sharp. Get a haircut.
Matt Jones
Look, you're the only person that before a big day cuts his hair down to nothing. Yeah, no, I'm, I'm just gonna. It's a normal thing. Like I'm not the star of the show. There are other people there. I just have to introduce them and then get them to talk to each other about, you know, I had to do some research last night. Have to do some more today.
Drew
On pants or the event?
Matt Jones
No, just the. Just the state of nil I want. Cause I'm supposed to give 10 minutes. 8. Sue me. 7 to 8 minute summary to start of the transition from amateurism to nil. It's kind of hard.
Drew
Like how'd you, how'd you get into this one?
Matt Jones
They used to ask me because I think the combination of law and me doing sports and then moderating, I can see why they, why they pick. But like that's a tough thing to do. Go. Five years ago we were paying no to buddy. Now we can just pay whatever we want. How did that happen?
Drew
Is this something that we could stream online and watch?
Matt Jones
I don't think it's streamed. I've had a lot of people ask me, you can go see it. I know it's at the Singletary center at UK. It's at 5:30. It's open to public. I think. I don't know how many people are going to be there. I think that they said the room holds 350.
Shannon
But tell Drew's on your panel.
Matt Jones
It is a woman from the NCAA commission, a dude who represents a bunch of athletes and your guy, Mark Story. The Herald.
Drew
Nice. Love Mark Story.
Shannon
Stars.
Drew
So big night over at the. Over on campus.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Let's watch out. It's going to be. When you see the crowd. That's what's going to be going on. Well, a lot of stuff to get to. I think the two big stories. Big Blue met Madness Saturday and then I think the firing of James Franklin yesterday has led to conversations about here those. I think those are probably the two big things. So let's start with something positive. I don't want to be like Mario and always negative. Let's start with. Let's start with Big Blue Matt. All right. I'm going to go on record and say this is in my opinion one of the best Big Blue madnesses in many years. I mean, I think you have to go back. Last year was exciting because it was Pope's first one. Rick Patino. But If I asked you to remember something that happened besides Rick Patino, can you remember it? No.
Drew
Mark Stoops coming out and flexing.
Shannon
Oh, yeah. On the football field.
Matt Jones
On the football field, that's right. And then that looks.
Drew
Going south at that moment.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it doesn't. Because they just beat no Miss.
Drew
Just beat Ole Miss.
Matt Jones
Yeah. But I think this one gives us a bunch of moments that people will remember.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Number one, they had like, two. I think they had three things they wanted to do. Okay. They got one of them done. But to me, it was the one that was most important. I think they wanted to do something with a horse.
Shannon
Yeah, you kind of.
Matt Jones
That was the one. After that, I knew that they were trying to do Wall and the horse. The third one I found out later, I'm not going to say, because we'll leave that for another time, but. But I knew they were trying to do Wall on the horse, and they still weren't sure what was going to get here. And then they weren't sure about the horse. The horse ended up not working out. Wall, I think they didn't know for sure was getting here. Am I right? Until early in the afternoon.
Shannon
Yeah. That's why you. And I kind of hinted at it at the show on Friday, but there was no guarantee even on Friday that he was going to make it to madness on Saturday.
Producer or Co-host
What if instead of John Wall coming up on that riser, it was just.
Matt Jones
Oh, yeah. And just a random horse.
Producer or Co-host
Yeah, just a horse.
Matt Jones
Just a horse, ladies and gentlemen.
Producer or Co-host
A horse.
Matt Jones
And then the horse comes up and then just looks at everybody and just takes a big dump right there on the. On the thing. What was that? I never heard. Why were they thinking. Weren't. Not sure Wal was going to be able to get there.
Shannon
It was true. I think it was just travel logistics, I think, is what it was. Trying to make sure he got here in time.
Matt Jones
Well, he gets here, and that's a great moment. Right? I mean, isn't that a great moment? Just. Even though I knew it was coming, the moment Ice Cream Paint Job plays, you can just hear the crowd get excited and. And even though he only did this.
Shannon
Twice, he didn't do it very long.
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, he's probably like, you know, now he's in his mid-30s. You still want me to do this? I still thought it was great.
Drew
Yeah. I wasn't able to watch live, but I just saw a picture of John Wall with his arm up on top of the set on that platform, and it kind of. I'll say Gave me chili bumps.
Producer or Co-host
Right.
Drew
It kind of got my feelings still image of it.
Matt Jones
You're recreating the best thing that's happened at. At Big Blue Madness. And John Wallace still is a guy who can still connect the ages.
Shannon
Yeah, right.
Matt Jones
Like old fans like him, younger fans. And then even people who weren't. Who were kids or did. Weren't even paying attention when he played, they still know that that happened. I. I just thought that was. That couldn't have been better.
Shannon
I loved it. You know, they do the. Recreate the whole thing with him coming up on the riser, doing the John Wall dance. Place going crazy. You're right, though. But even for, like, old guys like me, young guys like Mario, John Wall is like the centerpiece. It's kind of made Kentucky basketball relevant again. And we'll never. We'll always appreciate.
Matt Jones
Do you think he's like. To some extent, is he the face of, like, Kentucky players? So, like, when I was a kid and you were to say Kentucky basketball players, you, You. You probably would have said, like, Macy. It didn't work for me. Although I think a little. People a little older than me were like that about Macy. I was probably Rex and to some extent Kenny Walker, I think was a little bit of that to me. And then I think it was Mashburn for a long time, don't you?
Shannon
Yeah, for sure.
Matt Jones
I kind of think it's John Wall now.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Don't you? Even though Anthony Davis was. Is better and all that, I still think it's kind of John Wall, isn't it?
Drew
Oh, I definitely think it's John Wall. I mean, Anthony Davis got the title, but Davis, I mean, he's not that Walton wouldn't have been NBA star, but you know, Davis, some people associate him as a Lakers champion. People think John Wall and the university.
Matt Jones
And they think Kentucky.
Drew
No one thinks the Wizards.
Matt Jones
And it's kind of helped that that six four from Kentucky has stuck with him forever. And like, I think even nationally, when people think John Wall, they think of that, right? They think of that moment.
Drew
And your point about young people don't even remember it or weren't alive for it or watching. It's almost like you feel like, well, I have to have this connect. It's like a part of being a Kentucky fan.
Matt Jones
No, I think he is the player connection for Kentucky. So having him there was that cool. And then I thought. I thought that the Trent Noah thing, having Jordan Smith singing and having him.
Shannon
Pop up, I got chili bumps during that.
Matt Jones
I thought that was great. That was Great. I mean we're. I think there's a part of me that's like we're never leaving Harlan alive. We're like, I think we got plenty of that now. Like we've. We're doing it at the football games. I mean we're doing it but walk up for pitcher.
Drew
It's a lot.
Matt Jones
It's a lot. Because that's an old song.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I don't know that we just all resurrected it all of a sudden. But I thought in that circumstance and especially having this kid sing it who's from Harlan and who was on. Was he on the Voice or American Idol or one of the two. I thought that was neat then. You know, having the fan fest.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I'm going to get later have Mario talk about. Because he went to it. I didn't go to it. But just having that event I think was just made it great. And it felt like a real celebrate day long celebration of UK fandom. Drew. Which is what you want it.
Drew
I wasn't there but I saw enough of it to kind of understand how it went. It seemed that they just thought of so many things. I mean you had our friend Billy from True Blue Customs at a station painting shoes.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Drew
Obviously you're meeting players. I heard Pope went over game film.
Matt Jones
You know, my guy broke down game film for 30 straight minutes.
Drew
My guy Aaron Kaiser's in there painting. It's not like they just rolled out one thing and said come look at this. It seemed like you could make a whole day out of it. That they considered just about everything they could think of.
Matt Jones
I agree.
Shannon
And play one on one with Khalil Whitney and the one sided on the basketball court. That was cool.
Matt Jones
What you could play one on one with. He was just there challenging people.
Shannon
He was there and you could play a little one on one.
Matt Jones
You should have come and challenged Khalil Whitney one on one.
Producer or Co-host
He doesn't want the smoke. I'll cross him over and make him.
Matt Jones
Nice of the dragon to do.
Shannon
It was great.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And then, you know, I thought I. I heard from a lot of people that went that the in game stuff, the in arena stuff was much better. They had two new people doing it. I don't know. They're apparently NBA people but they brought actual entertainers to in the entertain the crowd. And it worked. Here's a hint. Get people who do that to do it. And it worked. I thought that I watched the TV broadcast. I thought the new guy. Noah. Noah, Ravi and George Amore. That was a good combination. I think George Amore is great.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I think she's like, she's gonna add.
Shannon
A lot to the women's broadcast.
Matt Jones
Is she doing the women's broadcast?
Shannon
I think she's doing some of them.
Matt Jones
She'll be good at it. Like, I thought she. For somebody who's just graduated college, she was really comfortable at it. And, you know, then the three point contest was cool. And then Colin Chandler wins dunk contest with John Wall throwing him the ball. I mean, I just think for you, for an event that is hard to reinvent every year and has taken a lot of criticism over the years, I thought they did a really, really good job.
Drew
Yeah, it sure seems like it. What is the. I don't know when they aired it, but I've seen this new clip. It's like two and a half minutes long on Twitter. That is amazing.
Matt Jones
So their new intro video with the players. I mean, this part, the Pope regime gets. I'm not saying Cal didn't real. Like, Cal was good to the players of the past, but for him, history in terms of what he marketed, started with John Wall, correct? Right.
Shannon
Yep.
Matt Jones
He respected the other guys, but he was like, okay, thank you, guys. We're marketing Wall on right. Mark Pope's got a little bit of everything.
Shannon
Yes.
Matt Jones
You know, he. That video, it shows players watching moments from the past. Right. One of them's looking at Oscar, one of them's looking at Wall, one of them's looking at Rex, you know, like. Like, that's cool. I think that's. That. That's very cool. And that intro video, if you haven't seen it, that they're going to play that at the games this year, apparently.
Shannon
It was a great. Was fantastic. And you're right, if Cal was still here, that video would have. Would have just been his players.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Shannon
Pope gets it, understands what the history of this program means, and these old players mean to all.
Matt Jones
And I'm a complete and total sucker for putting old UK highlights. To me, yeah, I'm just a sucker. You can put any song, you just start showing and. Because. Because what happens is with that, especially the older I get, I see all those moments and I just think of where I was for all of them. Yeah, it's. And when you put music on it, dude, I am a grown man and that stuff brings me to tears every single time. It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous. That scene, you know, when. When in 2014, when they all jump on Aaron Harrison and they're, you know, that shouldn't have that effect on me, but it always Does Drew. And every time they do one, I love it.
Drew
Me too. And on stuff like that with Kentucky basketball, the sappier the music, the better.
Matt Jones
I agree.
Drew
You know, my football highlight, I need some, I need some beats and some probably some rap music, but the Kentucky basketball highlights just make me cry. If you want to play the Sapphire.
Matt Jones
Like it's the first time I've seen it.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
You know, like, oh, is that all going to go in when Patrick.
Shannon
It's crazy. Like other people across the country don't get it. You know, we watch a, we watch a video like that and it plays with our emotions so much. Like I said, moves you to tears. You get chilly when other people can't appreciate that.
Matt Jones
I do think it's because you think, at least I do, of parts of your life that were these moments. Right. I can remember exactly where I was when Scott Padgett hit that three against Duke. I can see myself in that situation. Yeah, right. I can. You know, I can, I can see myself when those two dudes, when Walt, Cousins and Wall hugged each other in Nashville at the SEC tournament after that shot. I mean, I remember where I was sitting in that. And you just go through of them. I just thought they did an excellent job. And I do want to say I'm very harsh sometimes on forgetting the common fan, et cetera. I know the thing Saturday had some hiccups with people not being able to get autographs. The mere fact that they did it, everyone should Praise Amen In 2025 where it's all, where there's just month. They want money, money, money, money, money. In college sports, to have a completely free event that rewards the people that get there the earliest two hours before they opened up allows them to interact. See, all this brings all the disparate parts of our fan base. The UK basketball people deserve all the credit in the world for doing that. And that to me starts at the top with Mark Pope who prioritizes things like this.
Shannon
Yeah. You could tell that he, he, it's important to him to, you know, bring that fan base back and let us know. It's, it's our program. It's not just the coaches program. It's everybody's program.
Matt Jones
I thought that was a great day. 859-280-2287 Text Machine 772-774-5254. We will take a break and be right back. KSR.

Welcome back Techie Sports Radio. You also had a couple other things you had the Jasper Johnson doing the 6 7. Didn't know till this weekend he was part of making that a trend. How is how did I not know that I literally did the trend. How did I not know one of our players was part of getting that going that him and what was it?
Drew
Take any yeah, you're the show's tick tocker. You're supposed to have all the tick tock.
Matt Jones
First of all, I said 67 didn't even know it was a thing. And then people were like oh, you know the trends. And I was like what? I still don't know what it means. I think it means nothing.
Shannon
But it does mean nothing but it.
Matt Jones
But they did that in the intro. I didn't even know. I did not know till this weekend that we had a player that was like part of that I knew.
Drew
Take any New York Times did a story about it. I knew about the take any connection. I guess I could have associated that Jasper was probably around the room at that time because it was at ote. But I didn't know Jasper had a big part.
Matt Jones
Had no idea one person writes on the text machine. Matt, I know I'm old and probably grumpy, but John Wall doesn't do anything for me. Well, you are old and grumpy.
Shannon
How can you be a Kentucky fan and say that John Wall doesn't do anything?
Matt Jones
You're just being a contrarian. If John Wall doesn't do anything for you, then you don't. I'm not gonna say you don't love this, but you're just being a grump because I I will contend until the day I die. There's never been a more fun year of college Basketball at Kentucky than that one. I know we didn't win, but that was the greatest rock star year ever.
Shannon
Yep.
Matt Jones
Ever. You the 92 team. There's a special sentimentality to that year, right?
Shannon
Yes.
Matt Jones
2015, there was a greatness component. 2012, we obviously won the title. 96, we were dominant. But if you're just talking fun, Ryan, they'll never be a year as fun as that was one.
Shannon
And fun. I mean, that was the book that Aaron Torres was right.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it was fun. One, would you agree? Most fun year ever.
Shannon
You're right. It's a shame they didn't win the title. They deserved it. But it was so much fun. You know, the Magic Johnson showing up at a game. You know, all these people that wanted to come with LeBron just to see this phenomenon that was going on.
Matt Jones
Get on here really quick. Tell. Tell me, Mario, you were there. How was the fan fest? It was really cool, man.
Drew
I really enjoyed it.
Matt Jones
I would say, like, for the most.
Drew
Part, I'm glad it was free.
Matt Jones
Like, they was giving out tattoos, you know? So who got tattoos? Like, I'll probably say 60 over 60 people. It was a long line. Tattoos of What?
Shannon
Crazy.
Matt Jones
Like, UK logos, like the state outline.
Drew
With BBN in the middle of it.
Matt Jones
It was just 60 people got tattoos. More than 60.
Producer or Co-host
Somebody got an Ells down tattoo on their arm.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I saw somebody get an L down.
Producer or Co-host
When they raised their arm up, it's going to be L's up because it's L down on their arm. They didn't think that one through.
Matt Jones
Maybe they didn't.
Drew
What about the Kenny Brooks autograph tattoo?
Matt Jones
Yeah, somebody got a Kenny Brooks autograph. I didn't see that. I didn't see what his gratis is. Were people happy there?
Drew
Oh, they were doing static, like the.
Matt Jones
They had five on five, like a.
Drew
Basketball court where fans could play. Like, with Khalil Whitney, Darius Miller.
Matt Jones
Like, everybody was just having a good time. Yeah. I'll tell you another cool thing they did. They did this row where they let all the UK podcasts do it. Yeah, that was cool. I remember, like, I know what that would have been like when I got started if UK in 2006 had let me come and do podcasting from the thing. That's very cool of them to do. And so a lot of people who don't ever get to do that got to do that. Yeah, that was.
Drew
That was incredible.
Matt Jones
Overall, man, I was just.
Drew
I was surprised how so many people.
Matt Jones
Like, came, like, two hours before. There's a whole line, like, Wrapped around. There was a. There was a line all the way down to the park. To Gatton Park. I'm serious. It wrapped all the way down. Around into the park. Drew.
Drew
Yeah, clearly it was a hit on the podcast thing. That was good for young and upper comers. Also, the local media here lately has just felt like we don't get much. Like, we've seen all the national people get to come in and see practice. Sometimes the local media is like, hey, we're over here, too. I thought that was big. And just giving them access and letting them be a part of something where a lot of times, as we know, they kind of try to keep it.
Matt Jones
All in house, so. All right, so let's talk just second about the basketball. I know you can't draw too much into it, but as people saw it, pro day in this. This is a team that can shoot.
Shannon
Trent Noah may be the best shooter I've seen in my lifetime.
Matt Jones
The dude. The dude.
Shannon
The dude just doesn't miss.
Matt Jones
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Shannon
I'm being a little, you know, a little hyperbole there, but.
Matt Jones
Hyperbole?
Shannon
Hyperbole.
Matt Jones
What is hyperbole? Is that like.
Shannon
It's a special kind of hyperbole?
Matt Jones
It's a color hyperbole.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Not purpley.
Shannon
Yes.
Drew
Yeah, I gotta remember that one. That one's gotta go in the coffee table book.
Matt Jones
Mike, go ahead. Mike.
Caller
Can you hear me?
Matt Jones
Yes, go ahead.
Caller
So I got two things. One, you know, I just moved to Miami, so I wanted to thank you all for providing a great show every day that I can always tune into at work. It's been a good, steady thing that kind of keeps my life consistent. So thank you all for that.
Matt Jones
You're welcome.
Caller
And second of all, you know, with the Jersey Franklin stuff, you know, I see some people.
Matt Jones
I'm gonna let you finish, but just note 30 minutes that people are ready to talk about Stoops. I mean, you're just ready. I. Jerry's next. I know he's gonna do the same thing. I was trying to get some basketball joy in, but let's just get to James Frank. But go ahead.
Caller
I mean, he deserved to be fired, obviously, but, like, you know, I see people on Twitter saying, should we look at him? But, you know, I. I think it's inevitable. Like, we know that we're going to be moving on from Mark Stoops very soon. If. I mean, maybe it's next year, maybe it's this year, but it will be coming, and I feel like our next Candidate has to be somebody who's done more with less rather than less with more. Like somebody like James Franklin or one of these other coaches at a big program.
Matt Jones
I don't think anybody. And I appreciate the call. I don't want James Franklin. I don't think that's. I don't think Kentucky wants to do that. Plus, why would you want to get a guy who you're paying your buyout and you're paying Penn State's buyout? Because if we hire him, we're going to end up paying Penn State's buyout.
Shannon
Right.
Matt Jones
So why would you want to do that? But I guess we have to talk about Stoops because I know these callers. I was, I was trying to get a little basketball joy. Now we'll get to the rest of it. We'll be right back. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney.
Shannon
Call tj.
Matt Jones
He'll make him pay.
Producer or Co-host
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
We're laughing about, you know, Keeneland's going on, which just makes all of social media videos of people walking in and out of Keeneland. Like, I just, I can't.
Shannon
Why is that a thing?
Matt Jones
I can't do it. All these people make videos like they're the guest of honor everywhere they go. It just makes me roll my eyes. I mean, I. You want to go to Keeneland, take pictures with you and your friends, that's fine. You're a woman, you look good. Put it up. You boys, you got suits on. I'm good with all that. But when videos of them walking in and like gazing at the horses and like, I'm just like, just, just take yourself a little less seriously, please. Just a little bit.
Drew
I don't want any video of me leaving Keenan. In fact, if you have one of those, delete.
Matt Jones
It probably won't be good. All right, let's just. Before we go to the phones, let's just do quickly football. So James Franklin gets. Gets fired. It's going to be a $50 million buyout. It's going to be the second highest buyout ever paid. It was James Frankel. Just the record. Penn State lost back to back games as a 20 point plus favorite. No team since 1993 has ever done that in a year. He did it in back to back weeks. So he gets fired. $50 million. Buy it. The conversation here immediately goes to Stoops, obviously. Couple differences I think are important. Number one, Penn State's is not due immediately to do over the course of his contract so really, they owe $10 million a year. That's a big difference. Big difference. Big difference. Mitch Barnhart, no matter what happens with this whole thing, having two contracts with top coaches where we had to pay the buyout within a month was a massive disaster. And he deserves a lot of criticism for that. And the next time I interview him, I'm going to ask him about it. I don't know how you do that. It's a huge mistake. I don't know if any other school in the country even has that.
Shannon
Ask you, has that ever been happened before?
Matt Jones
I'm sure there are other ones. I don't know of any. All these people that have been fired, Jimbo Fish and all those, they haven't had it.
Caller
Correct.
Matt Jones
We're the only one that's had it amongst these guys. That now makes five major football programs that have already fired their coach.
Shannon
And more coming.
Matt Jones
Virginia Tech, ucla, Arkansas, Oklahoma State and now Penn State. All programs, by the way, that have had more success than we've had. Yeah, there's more coming.
Shannon
Yeah, there's more coming.
Matt Jones
I mean, Florida, pretty decent chance. Boston College, Maryland, I mean, there's. There's more coming. Who knows? Auburn maybe.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So we're going. This is going to be a hard time to go find a coach if we have to go find a coach.
Shannon
Because those other jobs are a better job than the Kentucky job.
Matt Jones
Yes. And there's only so many people out there who are going to want to be hired. Then on the same weekend, Kurt Signetti takes Indiana and they beat Oregon on the road, which of course leads people to go Wolf. Indiana can do it. Why can't we? So not a good weekend. If you're Mitch Barnhart or Mark Stoops, would you agree with that?
Drew
No. And you know, five days ago, maybe three days ago, probably thought quite a little weekend, a little bit of BA Big Blue madness is going to have everyone's attention. We won't even be mentioned then. We'll focus on Texas next week. But the James Franklin thing, almost like it just got people fired up again. Even though uk nothing has changed on UK side in over a week. It just got people.
Matt Jones
Our situation is different than them. I mean, we don't have the money they have now. There was a report that Adidas is paying the buyout that Adidas says that is false. They're not paying. I tend to believe them. Why would Adidas pay?
Drew
I thought that too and I saw the tweet.
Matt Jones
They would want them to be good.
Drew
But they're not going to pay a 45.
Matt Jones
I mean, they just signed like a $500 million deal. They're not going to pay a $50 million pile. But ours being due up front, Ryan, is why it's different.
Shannon
That's why I ask you, has this ever happened before?
Matt Jones
I don't know of any time it's ever happened. I'm not saying it hasn't, but I don't know of any time.
Shannon
And what was the purpose for Barnhart to think that was a good idea at the time? They think that Stoops was never going to leave.
Matt Jones
And Stoops has a great agent. And Barnhart, some would consider this a compliment, some would not. I think he intentionally gives pro coach contracts. Look at all of our coaches. They all have contracts that are very friendly. Even the ones that have been very successful. All have very positive. I mean, Mark Pope, I'm glad we did this, but we paid him probably more than we needed to. I'm okay with it. Yeah, but we paid him what, five and a half, $6 million. I mean, he was making what, two. You know, I mean, you just like, that's what we do.
Drew
And you know, Pope would have crawled on glass to get here. He was probably.
Matt Jones
I mean, Mingy owns. Played very, very well. Kenny Brooks has paid very, very well. Craig Skinner is paid very, very well.
Shannon
Yeah.
Drew
And when it's looked like it's not working, he's very patient to let them rot it out. And that's worked for people like Mingyon.
Matt Jones
It's worked for Mingyon, but there's been other examples. Then he probably gave. What's her name, our last women's coach. He probably gave Kyrie one more year than. Than. Than you would have otherwise. So, you know.
Shannon
So with that said, you think he's going to give Stoops more time?
Matt Jones
Well, this is a different situation. I mean, we got to see what the next six weeks. But how can you give him more time if they're three and not.
Shannon
Seriously, I don't know how you bring him back if they're three.
Matt Jones
You can. What are you going to argue? What's the argument? That it's going to work.
Shannon
Coming off well, a four win season last year and you come back with a three win.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you can.
Drew
It's not a. It's not a one off three.
Matt Jones
Exactly. That was last year.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
The one off year was last year, not this one. So. Yeah. Michael, go ahead, Michael.
Caller
Not so much doom and gloom, but a question I've been pondering and pondering with football is what's the shelf life of Cutter. How long does Cutter, you know, say this?
Matt Jones
I sit that say this with love. I. And I don't. I like Cutter, and I think he can be good here. It doesn't matter. You do not make your choice based on Cutter bowling. He's. I hope he ends up good here. I think he still can. If we have a new coach come in and they like Cutter, I'd love to see Cutter stay. But Cutter, to me, as much as I like him, is irrelevant to whatever choice you make at the end of the year. This is not Tim Couch, where you've got a dude who's going to be the number one overall pick in the draft and you consider what he wants before you go. Cutter is along for whatever ride we go on. And in the portal era, you don't have to have Cutter because you can go get someone.
Caller
True, True. All right, well, thank you for helping me out.
Matt Jones
Do you agree with that?
Drew
Yeah. I wanted to work with Cutter, and I hope whenever this happens that he's a part of what's next. But also, if you make the right coaching, hire a guy that's good, got a little swag to him, he's probably going to want his own guy. Even if he likes Cutter. That's just the nature of the business. They usually bring in their own people.
Matt Jones
Justin, Roland made a good point online that I want to talk about, but let's take one more call, and then I want. Because I want to expand on something he said. David, Go ahead. David.
Caller
How you doing, man?
Matt Jones
What's going on, David?
Caller
Good. I love that big blue madness. The other day, I brought back memories when John Walt did the dance, and it was fun to see Tubby there, too.
Matt Jones
Yes, I had. How did I forget that? Having Tubby there was also excellent. You're exactly right.
Caller
Yeah. Well, last week you were t talking about anime and Death Note in one piece. And yes, I'm. I'm gonna suggest this. You don't have to watch the. The anime on Netflix, but there is a live action one piece show that. That'll. That is shorter, and it. It has one season and then second season on the way.
Matt Jones
I'm gonna stick with Death Note. I've watched one episode, liked it. I'm gonna watch two or three this week. I'm gonna stick with that one piece. I saw somebody was on TV saying it was like, who was it? The dude who's. What's the name of the dude with all the Vaseline on his face that's trying to take over the world.
Producer or Co-host
What do those words mean?
Shannon
Good grief.
Matt Jones
There's a guy that's always on tv and he's greasy, and he's like an AI Guy. He's really involved in politics. Peter Thiel, Okay. He was the guy that said, we don't need humans anymore.
Drew
Yeah, okay. I know the Vaseline part.
Matt Jones
Oh, he's very Vaseliney.
Drew
Yeah. I didn't know that part.
Matt Jones
Look at his. He's very greasy all the time. Anyway, Vaseline guy, he said that one piece was a metaphor for, like, the Antichrist and all this stuff. And I was like, I don't want to watch this too much.
Caller
It's not. It's not.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I just want to watch. I just want to watch Death Note David. And then. And then we'll go from there. Okay.
Caller
Okay. But it's not a metaphor for the Antichrist and all that. Just don't listen, okay?
Matt Jones
Oh, okay. I appreciate. No, he was saying, like, the hero in one. It doesn't matter. He's got Vaseline over his face, that guy. Let me just say, you want a guy to be worried about, like, rather than us fighting. You know my feelings about Trump. Y' all may hate. Whoever put all those people to the side, they're all going to go away. The dude to get scared about his Vaseline face because he's all into the AI and he's the dude who said, I don't know if we need humans anymore.
Drew
He's got that Palantir.
Matt Jones
He's got Palantir?
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
You want a dude to be scared of for the future? That Vaseline dude is the guy.
Shannon
He does kind of look like he has Vaseline on his face.
Matt Jones
Am I wrong?
Shannon
No, you're not.
Matt Jones
He's scary. He said Shannon, he was like, I don't know if we need humans. I think we could have, like, machines and be fine trying to find.
Producer or Co-host
I've never heard of this guy before.
Matt Jones
Well, he's the dude who brought JD Vance into our life.
Caller
Yeah.
Matt Jones
No, I'm serious. He's j. He's the one that got Trump to pick J.D. read about him. He's a scary dude, like Elon and all those guys I have problems with. But that dude, that's the dude to worry about.
Drew
He's one of the big billionaires that are eventually going to take over the world.
Matt Jones
He's got. Look, this world is going to be run by, like, five people. Musk, Zuckerberg, Peter Thiel, Sam Altman.
Shannon
And.
Matt Jones
And, like, if you read those, they're all scary, weird. But he might Be the worst.
Producer or Co-host
I mean, he does look a little shiny.
Matt Jones
A little watch interviews with it.
Producer or Co-host
Is he just sweating, do you think?
Matt Jones
I don't know. He just lathers up before he goes on television.
Producer or Co-host
You know, skin care is important.
Matt Jones
I don't know. All right, we'll take a break. I don't know. I did not mean to get off on that. See, David, does that. Take a break. Be right back. Ksr.

Dude, he's. He's got so much Vaseline, right? Shannon, look at all the pictures.
Producer or Co-host
Oh, he's very shiny.
Matt Jones
Go watch his interview. He does an interview with like, I think his name's like Russ Dawfat or whatever. But anyway, you'd go watch that interview. Tell me you're not scared of that dude. When the guy's like you, you really believe we should have humans here? And he's like, maybe you're like, what?
Drew
You're on our team, man.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he's team Vaseline. Is he a human when you watch maybe he's clear. I know people are also right and tell me to watch one piece. It's also 1700 episodes. Like, I've got to have some stables. I got things to do.
Drew
Yeah, hard pass on that.
Matt Jones
1700. There are seasons that are like 131 episodes. But you're you. Then you say your kids love it, right?
Shannon
Josiah's best buddy Darion would watch him non stop on our road trips. And I'm like. He was like, I'm an 800, but it's episode 800. I'm gonna make it to a thousand.
Matt Jones
Shadyrays.com if you want sunglasses, premium Polarized sunglasses that keep the sun down but keep your eyes safe. It's, it's Shady Rays. I love the, the red, the way they give you the nice color. The colors pop out there. Company based in Kentucky shady rayshadyrays.com Best Loss Protection Best breaking protection Shady Rays. There's no reason for you to get different sunglasses than our friends at Shady Race. Justin Roland made a point that I want to note and I want to expand on it. He said the next two years in college football are very important because it is a chance for teams to break out because of the chaos. I'm not going to do the history of college football, but you've probably heard me over the years do it and say there are these moments where college football makes changes and the programs that develop move forward and the ones that don't go away. We've talked about it with Nebraska, Notre Dame, that when the, when college football, all of it became on television, they got left behind. We're in one of those moments right now. We're in one of those moments where the whole fundamental part of what college football is is changing because of the portal and because of Nil and now Rev share and there's going to be like this two to three year period of whoever figures it out can create themselves into a powerhouse. Indiana's doing it right before our eyes. Signetti figured out the portal and he figured out all this and now he's got a chance to make Indiana really, really good.
Shannon
Third in the country this week, but.
Matt Jones
He'S got a chance. I mean, what's more impressive to me than them being third in the country is that they were really good last year and now they're good again. He didn't just do it in one.
Drew
Year because a lot of people said last year he just brought his James Madison players.
Matt Jones
Will he be able to sustain? Missouri did it that one year and then the next year they were seven and he's done it now twice. And that's what makes it impressive to me. This is not the time we can have a coach that's not like, this is the worst time you could have a coach falter. And more importantly, we have to have a coach that's ready for the new era.
Shannon
We don't seem to be ready at all.
Matt Jones
Just go look at the top teams in the country. Who's coaching them. Ryan day, young Kaylin DeBoer, young Kurt.
Drew
Signetti, young Dan Lanning.
Matt Jones
Dan Lane's on fire. Even though they lost Miami's coach Young. These people and they're all. What did I say the other day? How many of these coaches that did it the old way are winning the new way? Who's failing? James Franklin. Dabo Sweeney. Kirby Smarts winning, but it's slipping a little bit from what he was doing. Go look at the top seven. These are all coaches who are new and adapting to this. We have to have one of those, don't we?
Shannon
Hearing you say it just makes us feel like we are so far behind in everything you just said.
Matt Jones
Yes, we are. We're still. We are industrial. We are basically industrial barons. Except I don't even know if we have if Mark Stoops was a baron. But we basically own a Polaroid factory as the iPhones coming out.
Drew
Oh, yeah, when you put it that way.
Matt Jones
Now we own a successful Polaroid factory.
Shannon
But it's a Polaroid factory.
Matt Jones
But it's a Polaroid factory and people.
Drew
Aren'T as into polaroids anymore.
Matt Jones
Although they're making we're. But I'm serious. That that's not a joke. We are playing a game that is no longer the game. And everyone else is doing AI and we're selling typewriters. We got to get one of those or Mark's going to have to transform who he is.
Shannon
Is that a possibility that he can do that?
Matt Jones
How many people do you know that are that age that just completely change and transform and it works?
Shannon
There aren't many.
Matt Jones
There aren't many. I'm not saying there's nobody, but there's not many. So Justin's point, which was this is the time that you have to pick the person for the future. You can't go backwards. Who's the biggest failure in college football this year? The greatest coach of the industrial revolution, Bill Belichick. Right. He plays it the old way, but that's not how we're doing it anymore.
Shannon
So.
Matt Jones
I think that's it's just fact. Let's go to Kenny. Go ahead, Kenny.
Caller
Hey, Matt. I don't know you're a big wrestling fan. I don't know if you got to see what happened this weekend, but they had the match between the Dudleys and it was a retirement match. And they took their boots off in the middle of the ring.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that's right. The Dudleys wrestled the Hardee's, which did you know we'd still be doing that Shannon in 2025. Each other in the mid-90s and they wrestled each other last night and the Dudleys lost. And then they took their boots off and handed them to the Hardy Saint which is the symbol for I'm retired.
Drew
Get the tables one last time.
Matt Jones
D. Von. Get the table. They didn't have the tables out. But do you like that as a retirement thing, Shannon? You take your boots off and you hand them to the other guy.
Producer or Co-host
I mean, if you're actually going to retire and not come back three or four more times like the undertaker has.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Producer or Co-host
You know, but maybe.
Matt Jones
Maybe Mark will do that at the Louisville game.
Producer or Co-host
So just take his boots off.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And hand them to Vince after we beat him.
Drew
Nike Freeze UK logo. If you're the other guy, do you want the boots? Do you put them up in your house? Because it's not like a jersey of another player. You frame it. Put your man cave like, this is boots. That guy was wrestling.
Matt Jones
You've been in battle with somebody for 30 years. Like when Patino and Cal finish, one of them takes off their. Their loafers and hands it to the other one.
Shannon
Okay. All right.
Producer or Co-host
I'd rather have their jacket maybe than their shoes. But, you know, to each their own.
Matt Jones
I kind of like it.
Producer or Co-host
Jay Billis, is he still giving away his shoes after every.
Matt Jones
That's always the worst his way. His stinky shoes and hands them to.
Shannon
Kids with the Anthony's time.
Matt Jones
And you can always see the kids like, why are you giving me this? I don't want your shoes.
Drew
But if you're Matt Hardy's wife, are you like, are we really putting Bubba Ray's boots in our home? The mantle, are you really keeping them?
Matt Jones
I don't know if you put them on the mantle, but. But, yeah. Ryan, are you leaning now towards absent turning the season around? We have to make a change.
Shannon
I think you have to. I think like we said last week, all the pressure has gone from Stoops. Winning pressure is now on Barnhart to make a change.
Matt Jones
If they win six, though, do you. Do you think differently? Yes, absolutely. I do too.
Shannon
Yep.
Matt Jones
Because I. But I don't know that it'll be better for our program long term if we win six. But I think if you win. If you got. If you make a ball and he turned it around, you have to let.
Shannon
I think so.
Matt Jones
You have to keep going. But honestly, in my view, we're going to know Saturday night. You think so if we get our. If we get handed it to us, we know where this is going.
Drew
The most winnable game on the schedule, probably.
Matt Jones
We'll be right back.

This episode delivers the KSR crew at their best—equal parts deeply informed UK sports analysis and fan-driven humor. If you’re interested in why Big Blue Madness felt special again, who "owns" Kentucky basketball history, or how the coming era of college football will change which programs thrive, this discussion covers it all with authenticity.
The hosts don’t shy from hard questions about football buyouts and coaching futures, but they also don’t pass up the chance to laugh at wrestling retirements or social media clichés.
Essential takeaway:
UK Basketball’s new regime is drawing on tradition to reconnect the fan base, while the football program appears at a crossroads—caught between cash-strapped legacy contracts and the need to modernize, all as the college football world pivots rapidly into a new era.
If you love UK sports, college athletics, or just wry Kentucky humor, it's a can’t-miss hour.
