This is easy for me because my brother was the west point in the army. Army number one by far. Then a big drop to air force, and then way another big drop to navy.

Then where are the marines?

They're even farther down.

Okay, I'm gonna put them number two. Army.

Yeah, I forgot about them. Army. Big drop to marines, big drop to air force. And then way, way, way, way down there's navy.

I will say the navy don't do themselves any favor with their uniforms. It's not. It's not the most. It's not the toughest looking one.

I was gonna put marines above the army even though I have a lot of army connections.

Well, maybe a 0.1. I mean, they're just flying around. They're not doing a whole lot.

Yeah, Aiden laross did have a big tackle the other day after a punt, so, yeah, he's trying to work on that. Zero toughness.

[Matt Jones]

By the way, I'm ranking that with no knowledge of anyone or what. But they also say the Navy, the. The navy seals are the. Are the hardest thing they're the real badasses.

[Shannon Dawson]

You're splatin.

[Drew Franklin]

But also to your point about planes. Navy also have planes. The Blue Angels. That's Navy.

[Matt Jones]

It's a good point.

[Drew Franklin]

I'm putting the Space Force last, though.

Newest branch of the military.

[Matt Jones]

So that's real. I thought that was just like a joke.

They're. They're out there to get the aliens. I think they got toughened up a little bit.

Let's talk about Media day. Mark Pope and Otega away and Jalen Lowe were our representatives at SEC media day. They went last so that they were like, in prime time. So they were six o'. Clock. They. Mark Pope, Jalen Lowe, Otega away. The one message, they all said it over and over. This is, we're winning number nine. They probably. If you watched it and they just counted the amount of times they said the number nine, it was probably 40. I mean, it was just nine, nine, nine, nine. Mark Pope said, I'm glad we're preseason number nine, because that's part of our destiny this year is nine. It's clear they're pounding that in their heads. I also don't think you say that, Drew, unless you think there's a legitimate chance that you could be there at the end of the year.

[Drew Franklin]

The tone has just changed so much from the last coach. It used to be we would do these Media day interviews, and I guess there's nothing wrong with this, but it would be. I want to be the first pick. I want to be Anthony Davis. I want that Max deal. There were times where they would turn around and point at the wall, at Devin Booker, whoever, and be like, I want to get paid like that. Now you go around the room. The answer every time is, we want number nine. We want the national championship.

[Matt Jones]

And I prefer that. Right?

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah, it's. And again, of course, the other guys, they should have that dream. I'm not making it a negative. I'm just saying it's changed. Everyone says number nine when you're talking about what they want to achieve.

[Ryan Lemond]

It's obvious they're trying to just ingrain in their mind, kind of, you know, manifestation, make it. Talking into existence, make it happen. So I love it. I love. They're not shying away from it at all.

[Matt Jones]

I also think it was interesting. It's always interesting. Who do they take to these things? Not a surprise. They take Otega way. I think people would guess that. But anybody who does it by my Jalen Low stock, there's a reason why he's the second person there.

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah, that was a big vote of confidence in him. Not just that he'll be one of the star players, but as a leader too. They could have gone a lot of directions in that second spot and I think that's a big endorsement of him. More of even how he plays basketball. The fact that you just trust him to speak on behalf of everyone.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah, I love or take it said he's he's back. He's ready. He's ready to practice and we'll play.

[Matt Jones]

He's now practicing on a daily basis.

Yeah, that was some news that came out of that yesterday. I think that he knowing saying he's back.

[Matt Jones]

Mark Pope also said he scheduled Purdue because he wants us to jump right in in the basketball season. He was like, I want to know immediately where we are. If you listen to him talk about Purdue, he, he sounded like a guy who was trying to win the game though. He wasn't like, this is just a practice. He was like, I want to see where we are now so that we can see where we're going.

[Drew Franklin]

A lot of coaches will say bring it on anywhere, anytime. They don't always follow it up when they make the schedule. Pope really seems to want to play marquee opponents as often as he can. He said he wants to add more games to the schedule just so he can add more marquee opponents, not more cupcakes. I really believe him when he wants all these challenges, so says he wants them.

[Ryan Lemond]

A part of me is sad those games against Tracy and Georgetown Wesleyan are gone. But you can't help but get excited. You got the number one team in the country coming in here. Going to find out exactly where you are right when the season starts.

[Matt Jones]

Like, like what do we think that atmosphere is going to be like for that game? Like you think it's going to be. You think it's going to be on fire. You think it's going to be as rowdy as like a normal regular season game. You do.

[Drew Franklin]

Our fans will treat that like it is the final Four. Whatever happens. If we lose, there will be complaining, overreacting. If we win, there will be overreacting. We are going to treat that like it's the biggest game that's ever been played.

[Ryan Lemond]

Are they making you do a post game show after?

[Matt Jones]

We're doing a pre and post game show for that game. Yeah.

[Ryan Lemond]

That tells you right there how big. And though you'll have full bank of callers after an exhibition game against Purdue, I guarantee it.

[Matt Jones]

Let's say we lose though, are we going to overreact? Yeah, of course, people won't panic and.

[Drew Franklin]

Sky'S falling, but there will be a big frustration over losing a game that will have no impact on your resume.

[Matt Jones]

Let's say we win by 8 or 10. Is. Are the expectations for this team then completely out of, like, out of control?

[Drew Franklin]

Yes. And we are by far the most obnoxious fan base in sports. If that happens, we won't shut up. We'll be in airports pumping our chest with our logos on like we do. Anytime our team's good, we will. You will not be able to shut us up if we give it to him pretty handily in that first game.

[Ryan Lemond]

Yeah, because everybody. Everybody across the country says Purdue is the number one team. Like, there's no discussion. It's Purdue and then Houston. So if they're able to knock off the number one team right off the bat, absolutely, we're going to.

[Matt Jones]

I think it's a great. It's a great situation for Kentucky because in some ways it's no lose, because if you lose, it's the number one team in the country. But if you win, then you go, oh, wait a minute. This is not just hype. This is real, right?

[Ryan Lemond]

Yes. And we will. We will take it to the nth degree. We're just so excited about it. So whether we overreact or not, it's just who we are. This is what makes Kentucky basketball special.

[Drew Franklin]

And you have Louisville three weeks away on top of it.

[Ryan Lemond]

That's true.

[Matt Jones]

I hate that Louisville so early. I really don't like that. I wish I. That's one of those. It was not broke. Why did they fix it? I mean, that, that, that Louisville game kind of between Christmas and New Year is the last game before you went into confidence play. I don't like playing them November 11th. I really don't. And maybe that's just what it'll have to be for the rest of time. But I don't like it.

[Ryan Lemond]

I was gonna ask you, when it comes back to Rupp, do you think they.

[Matt Jones]

Will they move it back? But I think it's. I think it's in part because teams are wanting to take that time between Christmas and New Year off now. They're just. And most teams already did. We were one of the few teams that played those games. I just. I kind of wonder if that's just what. I don't like it. I don't. I don't like playing November 11th. I just don't.

[Drew Franklin]

I don't like it either. But if you Beat Purdue and you have that excitement. Then you beat Louisville. My goodness, it's not even middle of November.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah.

[Drew Franklin]

And the fans will be on the excitement.

[Matt Jones]

The Champions Classic now going to be like the fifth game of the year. Whereas it used to be the first or second game, now it's like the fifth game of the year.

[Ryan Lemond]

For some reason in my mind, I'm okay with that game being early. I guess maybe because we're used to it. I do not like the Louisville game being this early at all.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah. One person writes, matt, you're dismissing toughness of the Air Force. Did you know we have an Air Force pilot and a mom running for Senate? I don't know how you could say that.

[Ryan Lemond]

I wonder who that would be.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah. Why is she running? Like, you don't have to. We can, we can get somebody else.

[Ryan Lemond]

Maybe she's bored.

[Drew Franklin]

She didn't even cover the spread in that last election, did she?

[Matt Jones]

I would tell you, I would not put her as part of the KSR parlay.

Like, I don't remember, but wasn't it like not.

I mean, Amy McGrath +9 is not a bet that you should. That is not a bet you should invest in.

Not even teasing that one for more.

Hey, Matt, I was curious. What percentage of the fan base do you think want soups to be let go because they really want Summerall? And how likely do you think Summer would come here versus other job opening?

[Matt Jones]

Yeah, so I don't think this is just my take and I appreciate the call. I think last year a lot of the people that wanted Stoops gone were people who also wanted Summer. Right. It was almost like, I want Stoops gone because I want Summer. I don't think that's what it is this year. I think this year there's a huge segment of the fan base that just wants him gone and it doesn't even matter what's next. Like if Summerall goes somewhere else, they're still going to feel that way. Either way, they're just like, give us a new breath. No matter who it is. Would you agree with that?

[Drew Franklin]

I agree with that. Summer all is still the dream for most people, but I think it's flipped to where anything a lot of people be like, that's tree I'm looking at. Just give me something that's not Mark Stoops.

[Ryan Lemond]

I think, yeah, Summer. I was going, somebody's going to grab Him, I mean that's obvious. Some big school is going to grab him. He may not be available even if Kentucky job becomes open. So Kentucky, who do they go after then? A young go getter. Is that going to be the answer?

[Matt Jones]

But I think for a lot of fans that they don't this the the first last year I think the first question should you keep Stoops Was tied with the second question of who they wanted.

[Ryan Lemond]

Uhhuh.

[Matt Jones]

Now I think fans are we don't, we want to change and I don't even like we'll worry about who it is after that. Let's just change and then we'll worry about it.

[Drew Franklin]

Last year some Raw's personality was working against Stoops with a lot of the fan base. This year Stoops, his record is just beating himself up. He doesn't need a popular candidate to upset fans or want to change.

[Matt Jones]

It's going to fascinating though. What if, I mean what if we play Texas and beat them or lose on a last second field goal? Like I just, I think what's crazy is I don't think it's going to change anything. I think we have a chance to beat a Manning on our home field. A team that was a preseason national championship favorite and for a lot of our fans it would not even change how they feel.

[Ryan Lemond]

It would.

[Drew Franklin]

Well if they win 17 to 14 people still be mad.

[Matt Jones]

What if we won?

[Drew Franklin]

Now if your offense suddenly shows some Groovies when 30 something to 28, that's exciting. But for me and a lot of people the biggest issue it has been over two years since the offense has scored three touchdowns in a game.

[Matt Jones]

We have that is that like that is just unacceptable. This is an SEC team that isn't again an SEC game or just any.

[Drew Franklin]

In a Power 4 game.

[Matt Jones]

That is an unbelievable statistic. Who's next?

It's safe to say they're all tougher than we are.

I don't think anybody was arguing. Arguing that one person writes, Matt, you are. You have brainwashed the fans against Mark Stoops. It's always me. It's never the person that's on the field or the person that's coaching. It's always me. You used to want him to have a statue. Now you encourage people to get rid of him for ratings. You're going to do the same thing to Mark Pope. Just wait and see. Well, first of all, I. I don't know that I encourage the statue. I do think there was a time where I said that he had earned a statue if we ever did it. I. I don't even think that's necessarily incorrect. I mean, he's probably the best coach we've had. That doesn't mean you can have a statue. And it's still not be. He should coach forever, right? I mean, John Cal Peri might deserve a statue somewhere. He shouldn't have been the coach anymore. And as far as that, you turn on them. I don't. I'm not turning on anyone personally. Sometimes people's times have passed. Right. You can be great at something, and that doesn't mean that you should keep doing it forever. So, you know, there might be a time that we go, Mark Pope, it was awesome. Now it's time for something else. That's just the nature of coaching. You don't get to. There's no, there's no requirement that you should get to coach until the day you die. Like, you should coach until you're effective, until you're not effective. And at least recently, Mark Stoops has not been effective. And ultimately, that's what you're talking about. The day you start, I heard a baseball GM say, the day you start rewarding players for what they did in the past, you guarantee your bad future. The day you start rewarding coaches for what they did in the past and not what they're going to do in the future is Drew. The day you start losing.

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah. And I still think maybe not a statue, but I still think they should do something for Stoops at the stadium. He should be recognized over there. Maybe not right now, but eventually that should still be there. And I still think if he can't find a way to win a few more games, then it should probably over. You can both of those things.

[Matt Jones]

Both of those things can be true. Yes, I, I think both those things are true. We said, I know we said this about Cal two years ago. Calipari should be celebrated for what he did here. It was also time for it to end. Those two things are not inconsistent. Right.

[Ryan Lemond]

And it makes me a little sad. I mean, I love Mark Stoops as my coach. I wanted him to be my coach, but it's just not working right now. And it makes me sad because we deal. He's the longest tenured coach in the SEC right now. Nobody's coached longer than him in the sec. That just tells you what the shelf life of a coach, how long it really is.

[Drew Franklin]

That's part of the problem though. He's the longest tenured and there's 16th out of 16. Like that in itself is not a good look.

It's a great question. I appreciate the call. I do think there's an argument that Kentucky fans would like an offensive coach. This is a fan base that wants to score points. I mean, this is not a fan base. This fan base was probably permanently spoiled by Hal Mummy in the sense of like, football was fun. And I think we've had a desire for it to be fun since. And I think people want that. I do.

For years. We especially going back to our old gambling podcast, we've made fun of Iowa football for how boring they are. And like, why would anyone want to watch that? We have become that. But we're not winning.

You're exactly right. Boring and losing is a tough combination.

Who was it coming out long ago said we were losing, but we were losing 45 to 44. And fans were still excited about the program because it was fun to go watch a game.

A hotel's a great. But we, but I mean, the whole idea of putting a bunch of stuff over there, it's open eight days a year. Right.

That's what I was picturing it on a Monday night.

And nobody lives over there.

It's going to be completely. Campus is dead.

Campus, aren't there? Yeah. And in the summer. And then here's the other thing. The traffic there is so terrible. Right. So like I, I now if they do it, I'm gonna cheer them on and hope it works. It'll have very little effect on, on, on us, but it won't. It doesn't change my idea of.

Know, by the way, this isn't the greatest time to, to build restaurants either. I mean, this is a very, this is a very hard time. So I mean, if you're asking me, the university has access to $125 million. How should you spend it? That's not where I would put it right now in this age of nil and all the rest.

Tennessee is doing it, but their stadiums are next to Each other. It's between them. So you get more use out of it for basketball, other city.

[Matt Jones]

And it's already a place where people are, you know, like, like people think about where Kroger Field is. Nobody is there unless they're playing. Right. And it's a two lane road out there. You know, it's not. I just. That to me that's what I would be skeptical of.

[Ryan Lemond]

That's my big negative thing to say is the location. You know, it's on the south end of campus. The only reason people go there is to a baseball game, a football game or a soccer game or a softball game.

[Matt Jones]

Students don't even live over there.

That's where class buildings are. So the students are on the other side of campus for the most part. So it's just, you know, you know.

Entertainment districts like the one the Reds, Cincinnati have, you know, stuff like that. It works even during, on game day.

But that's in downtown. Right in the middle of downtown. It's not in this set apart.

And how many home baseball games you get compared to the college football game?

[Matt Jones]

That's exactly right. 81 versus 8.

Even basketball. If you're building it by a basketball arena, you're getting more opportunities. Just with football and nothing else to bring you out there. I don't know what it would do the rest of the year.

His son Tyler is a friend of mine and he, you know I always say that the, the UK fans, he passed away last week. I just found out yesterday. But you, I always talk about UK fans in Louisville. You have to be A hearty bunch to be in Louisville because you have to deal with Louisville fans all the time, and they're always chirping. And during those years where that happened a lot, from 2010 to about 2015, anytime I was going to do something in Louisville that was UK, he was there holding Ls down and being big time, big blue faithful in Jefferson County. He passed away. Great Kentucky fan. Great dude. And my prayers to his family as well. A regular listener of this show. So prayers to the Oaks family.

Not that preseason ranking matters or like I'm complaining about Kentucky being nice, but I've seen a list of everybody that votes in the AP poll and what's school they're affiliated with. And Kentucky don't have anybody that votes that they're affiliated with. But Duke had like, almost 10. What's the process?

[Matt Jones]

That's not right. Duke had 10 close to it. Is that right? Really? I didn't know that. I don't know what the process is. You have to be part of the Basketball Writers association of America. No one's ever asked me to be in that. As a matter of fact, I don't even know how one would do it. So I don't know. I mean, Jerry Tipton used to be the person that voted in Kentucky for many, many years. He's now retired. So I don't really know who does it. I guess no one does it. But it is weird that no one in the state of Kentucky, where basketball is bigger than any other state, would be a voter in the AP poll. Drew, that is a little odd.

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah. Jerry doing it for so long. That made sense. I had some. Probably one of the most trusted people on their panel. Now I'm just scrolling through the names quickly.

[Matt Jones]

I don't recognize they really have 10 for Duke.

[Drew Franklin]

Well, that's not putting the school affiliated with them.

[Matt Jones]

Okay, well, I appreciate the call. I'm actually fine with us being number nine. I think that's probably about where we should be. We have so many different new players. I think the top three of, of. Of Purdue, Houston, Florida feels right to me. And then after that, from 4 on, I think you could just kind of flip A coin. I'm. I'm.

Yeah. What Drew said yesterday in Kim Palm, we're number four behind Florida.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah. I think number four in the AP poll is St. John's you know, you put Kentucky and St. John's on the court tomorrow, it's probably almost a pick them game. So I think you look at that list from 4 to about 13 or 14. I think all those teams are kind of interchangeable.

[Shannon Dawson]

Yeah. And it's kind of corny, but we're into the number nine thing. Let's just go ahead and start the year at number nine. We'll know quickly with these marquee games in the first two weeks, it'll change. Win them, you'll move up. So let's just be number nine to kick it off.

Yeah, I mean, Louisville is going to be our first. We play Nicholls State, then Valparaiso and then Louisville. That's how the season starts.

So I don't, I don't like that. I don't. I hate it that the basketball games before the football game, I just don't.

Like that waiting around. Yeah, I mean, you. That's the second time you brought it up. You're not happy.

I mean, let me ask you a question in all seriousness. I love you, man. But you're telling me the three most memorable things from Big Blue Madness. Two of them involve Trent Noah. One of them is Colin Chan. You're not gonna put John Wall returning on the list?

Well, the Colin Chandler thing involved John Wall.

Yeah, but I, I love you, but you got to put John Wall on that list if you're gonna. I mean, that's my take.

I went back and watched it three times. Those were the three things that seemed to continue to stand out.

Okay, and what's the second thing?

The other, the other thing is this SEC network plus. Baloney. If you were an ESPN plus subscriber and you had all those channels and then Disney's so greedy that they separate them.

[Matt Jones]

Yes.

Into another charge. That's just, it's important to remember.

I'm glad you said that. I appreciate the call. If you only have espn, if you bought the ESPN package. So if you bought the Disney bundle, you do not have SEC plus that hit, that hit us here at the bar Saturday. So at the bar Saturday, we were trying to show Big Blue Madness and then we realized we didn't have it because we had the Disney bundle. SEC plus is actually different now than ESPN plus, which means you got to make sure you have it. And there's going to be a lot of people that caller. There's gonna be a lot of people who don't realize they don't have it. And so that's just important to note. If you buy ESPN plus, SEC plus is now a separate thing. But if you have cable, oddly, you have it, as weird as that is.
