This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
B
Welcome, everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Tuesday, October 21st. I'm Matt Jones here in Lexington in studio where you can give us a shout out Clark's puppet shop phone live. We will be taking your calls all day. I still think this is a good time to Hear what fans think. 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254. In this session sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office. Call TJ. I'll make them pay. I've got Ryan and Drew here in studio. Shannon is in Louisville. Guys, it's a beautiful day outside. Tomorrow and Thursday we'll be at the bar. Friday we'll be at Don Franklin. But we're here today. And how's everything going?
D
Well, drama. Just to get in the building, this morning they closed down the parking garage here at the Civic City center building.
B
What is the age where Drew weather and parking becomes the dominant part of your conversation? Because Ryan has reached that age when I say what's going on? And the only thing he bring, the first thing he brings up his parking. I do think he's reached that age.
D
Yeah.
E
And I was in the elevator. You've mentioned elevator small talk. A woman earlier, she just had to say weather. Like I said, good morning. But she had to talk about the weather outside. So it's those two things.
B
It's the worst thing, Shannon, about coming into this building is the elevator. Smart small talk. Because I don't I don't. I don't know what to say to people.
C
Don't say anything to. You know what you're not obligated to say.
B
I agree with you, but if I wait too long, then I know what's coming. What. How's our basketball team looking this year? Like, I know that's come.
C
You say good, and that's exactly what I say.
B
I say, I think we're going to be really good. But then, like, the conversation just ends.
E
And then you just want those numbers to start climbing as quick as possible.
B
We're just staring at each other. And I'm kind of with you, Shannon. I think it would have been less awkward if we had said nothing at all.
C
I'm good with an awkward conversation or just an awkward situation in general. I don't care.
D
It's better to have eight people in the elevator than just two people.
B
The two is. The two is the worst. When you're just sitting there staring at each other. And people are nice, but I think they feel obligated. They can't stand it to say something.
D
You know who Billy's like, maybe the worst at? He says, susie, because he can't stand it. He feels like he's got to say.
B
Something, and he'll, like, say something inappropriate. He'll be like, you have nice feet, woman.
E
Billy talks working out at the gym. So he'll talk to people anywhere.
B
Yeah. And I'm like, you can't say you have nice feet, woman. Like, you can't say that in. In an elevator.
D
You say it to a man.
B
No, you can't say it to anybody. You don't. There's a general rule of thumb. You don't talk about people's feet when you see. At least until you know them very well. I can tell you, Joe Crawford's got the ugliest feet I've ever seen in my life. But that doesn't mean that you. You should bring it up to everybody.
E
I stick to the script. Hey, how's it going? Look at my phone. Look at my phone. Look at my phone. Have a good day. That's all it is.
B
You always have to.
E
Hey, how's it going? Hey, what's up? Look at my phone.
B
Look at my phone.
D
Look at my phone.
B
Actually got an answer. You wouldn't like it, like, if they were like. Well, actually, Drew, you know, the mortgage payments could be tough to come up with. Then you're stuck.
E
My stomach's hurting. Yeah, that's true.
B
You don't want that. 859280. 2287. If you have thoughts, let me know. All right, so here's. Here's what I thought we would do to start today. You know, we've got UK Purdue coming up Friday. Are you getting excited about that?
E
Very excited. Very, very, very excited. You know, I'd rather have low, but just having the number one team in Rupp Arena, I know it's not going to count towards the resume, but you don't get that very often.
B
Yeah. And Pope was at the. What is it? The Lexington, like, talk to the fans event.
D
Yeah. I don't know.
B
Sure.
D
What?
B
I don't know. It's. It's the Louisville Alumni Club. Sorry.
E
Louisville lunch and Louisville.
B
I'm not lunching. I am. See that for many years. I really like it. They get a huge crowd at that thing. Like, I. I mean, I don't know what it was yesterday, but having done it a number of times, they get a massive crowd, having a big ballroom.
D
And it's always full.
B
It's full. And you get the best, like, flat chicken string, green beans.
E
Every time I was about to say that. The banquet chicken and the green beans.
B
Every time you get the chicken, the green bean salad, where you could either choose ranch or Italian, and you have.
E
To awkwardly pass the dressing around the table, and you're always like, I don't know what it is. I don't know what it is either.
B
No, that's that. That's that event. But he spoke at it with his wife. Yeah, it was interesting. He. I like that, though. Instead of having some goober interview, have your wife interview you. He said that Jalen Lowe was doing great. And he said something to the effect of, I'm going to have to hold myself back from playing him. Which suggested to me, even though he didn't say officially, probably not playing, but maybe playing when the season starts. Is that kind of how you heard it?
E
Kinda my first takeaway. If you're watching that video, the moment he says he's okay, someone just shatters a glass plate. They were so excited. It's very loud. You think, like, Stone Cold's about to come in.
B
Right.
E
Right. As he gives the big news. But between that and people seeing low at the volleyball game without a sling and kind of being mobile and smiling, and then hearing a few people say that the MRI went all right. I'm feeling pretty confident. Seems like he wants him.
B
What would you. Would you like him just to sit out these two games?
E
Well, there's two before Louisville, right? Two real games.
B
Nichols stayed in some.
E
I would Try to get him in one of those.
B
I would totally agree with. Exactly.
E
Exhibitions. I wouldn't push him.
B
But. But you got to play against Louisville. Well, I mean, you don't have to, but I hope he plays against Louisville.
D
Yeah. Tiptoe in. Take baby steps. That maybe that game right before. What was it, Val? Pole.
E
The one right before United took the rust off.
D
Knock the rust off of that game to get him ready for the Louisville game.
B
All right, so we'll. We'll talk because I do want to talk a little bit about UK Purdue and what we expect. But I think we have to start with Mark Stoops. He did his coaches show last night and he had a quote that I think everyone is. Is sort of focusing on from last night. Yeah, he. Here was his quote. I'll read it to you. He said, I understand how people may feel about me. That's understandable and that's warranted. And then he went on to kind of thank the fans for how positive they've been with the players. Now, I don't know about you, but when I read that quote, I understand how fans feel about me. That's understandable and that's warranted. First of all, I give him a little bit of a salute for that because, you know, he's often been over the years kind of defiant at criticisms. But this goes with what I've been talking about the last few weeks, which is that I think he feels all this and he knows how the fans feel and he really wants to win the fans over. But when I heard that last night, while I give him credit for saying it, it also sounded a little kind of resignation. He. I don't mean like he's going to resign, but like resigned to his fate. Do you agree with that?
E
I do. And I heard it first in his postgame comments Saturday. Yeah, I've mentioned a few times we've heard from Pope late Saturday or Pope Stoops late Saturday night, his Monday press conference and then his call in show. And he sounds like a completely different human than he has at any point up until now.
B
Do you think he walked off the field Saturday kind of knowing?
E
I think it sounds that way, yeah. I think for a long time he's either just fully believed he could turn it around or he's kind of been in denial of how upset people are in the press conference. Have kind of been sticking to the script. Honestly, you could play about any of his press conferences and they sound about the same over the last few months because he's just sticking to what he's, you know, he's got his message but Saturday was very apologetic, very much, which.
B
Is crazy because it was the best they've played. I mean you could make a strong argument that might have been the best game the team's played in two and a half years. And yet it's almost like he, when it didn't work, was kind of like, okay, this is how it's going to be.
D
That was the, really the fourth time he said it. He did it with Tom Leach on the postgame show. He did it with the media in the post game interview. He did it in the media yesterday afternoon and he did it last night on coaches show.
B
But when he said it's understandable how people feel about me and it's warranted, I mean that's a level of. And he was talking big picture like he wasn't talking about losing Saturday night. That's just a level of self reflection that you, you don't see a lot of coaches do that.
D
You don't, you know, it's like that. It's a defeatist attitude. You already admit your failure and coaches just do not do that.
B
But defeatist though makes it sound like it's almost lame. I actually think it's kind of positive that he understand. You know what I mean? Yeah, I didn't see it like we're quitting.
E
No, no, no, no. I didn't see that either.
B
I didn't. I saw it almost as. Look, I get it. I get why you feel this way and to some extent it makes it sad to me. When I watched his post game comment Saturday night, I didn't watch him till after my postgame show, but I remember thinking this is kind of sad. So with that in mind, like how do what happens over the next few weeks, leave aside the games, whether we win or lose, but we have like this six week march coming up and there've been so much anger. Do you think we trail off into sadness of a love lost like Billy tried to describe to Shannon this morning awkwardly during the pre show. What do you think?
E
Maybe if they do some kind of announcement. For the longest time I've thought Stoops wants to be here. He wants to fight through this. He doesn't care what everybody's saying. He's literally just going back to work like he says every time you ask now it feels like he sees the end is near. He wants to be loved here a long time. You know, this was a big alumni weekend. Rich Brooks was everywhere. He probably wants to be that one day where people come back and love him. And do you think that's possible?
B
Okay, so let's assume that's true. Assume he wants that. Because I actually agree with you. He wants that. What's the best way to make that happen? Right. Like if you, if you want to have a day where you come back here and you get the Rich Brooks receptions, what's the best way for these next six weeks to go?
D
They're gonna have to beat somebody and it may have to be Louisville at the end of the season.
B
Get.
D
Get one good win and then maybe beat Louisville.
B
And I think, okay, well, let's say that happens, but then they still have to part. Right?
D
Right.
B
So how do you part in a way that allows him.
E
I think it almost has to be Mark, like, this isn't working, but I've done this.
B
I have to give up $20 million. I mean, I've wondered, did he just go and be like, Shannon's like that? I don't want to feel good. No.
C
I'd rather feel bad and have $20 million.
B
Yeah.
C
Yeah.
E
But there's way, like he could say, look, the 60 day thing, I'll work with you there. There's ways he could help.
B
Okay, so is that the way?
E
Yes.
B
What? Like if he were to come out and say, I want my money, but to keep you all from being in a spot, we can pay it out over the course of the contract. Do you think fans would say, thank you, Mark, for doing us a solid and he could have that Rich Brooks role?
E
It would definitely help. And I don't know if he'd do the length of the contract, but any, any acknowledgment that I should go, but I don't want to hurt you all any more than I have these last couple years. I love this place. I didn't want to get back, get it to get this bad, but it is. Let me help a little bit. I mean, he's not going to just.
B
Would you do that, Shannon?
E
Say, don't pay me, but would you do the.
C
Pay me throughout the contract?
B
Yes. Rather than it all being owed in 60 days.
C
I mean, why do we sign that contract to begin with then if we're going to.
B
But we have. I mean, that's a different conversation. But if you were him, would you agree to that?
C
No.
B
It's like a you, you would just say, give me the money.
C
Give me the money. That's why we signed the contract. That's why it's worded the way that it is.
B
Even if it makes the Fans, you don't.
C
Fans will be fine. They'll be happy when he's gone.
B
Okay. What about you? Right. I think you would do it.
D
As long as I got my money, I think I know I'd be okay with extending the deadline. Like, even if, like for four or five, six. As long as I got my money.
B
Somehow it might be better for you. So you didn't spend.
D
Amen.
C
Yeah.
D
You know what?
C
That lump sum.
B
Yeah. Because Ryan would be one of these people who'd be like, well, I immediately need to buy this and that.
D
So if that happens, let's say in year three of the. Of the buyout, he takes a job with Virginia Tech, then it would.
B
I think it would be offset some of it.
D
Yeah. So I think it's another way he can kind of get back in our good graces.
B
But then again, there's the question. What's interesting to me is I think a lot of coaches don't care about the good grace. A lot of coaches are what Shannon is articulated, give me my money. I mean, Jimbo Fisher didn't care about the good graces. James Franklin didn't care about the good graces. But I kind of think Mark does.
E
And all those guys you mentioned have been a lot of places. This is the place. He's only been a head coach. It's been over a decade. He doesn't. I mean, other than being assistant, he doesn't really know what it's like to be the top dog anywhere else. So he doesn't have any other connections that could pull him there.
B
But it also be. I mean, he could be our Rich Brooks after Rich Brooks. He could.
D
Yes, he could.
B
He could. Because there are positive things that happen here.
D
He's still the winest coach ever here.
B
So I just think it's interesting when I saw that quote, especially the it's warranted. That is a change of tune from him because he used to say, like, your criticism in this game is warranted. But then he'd be like, but you know what? We've won a lot here. People like, back up. And now he's shifting that. It's warranted, seemingly to the state of the program. And that is a shift in the way he's talking.
D
A big shift. You're right. He always used to go, yeah, but.
B
Yeah, but he would always be a yeah, but don't you all understand? That was kind of his. Well, that's going away now. And I just find that interesting. I don't think I'd heard him talk like that before. Until the post game press conference and then yesterday. 859-280-2287 Text machine is 772-774-5254 we will take a break. We'll be right back.

Welcome back Techie Sports Radio. I'm gonna read you some of the comments here on the text machine. One person says, Matt, I agree with what you and Drew said. If Mark were to step aside and allow UK to pay the ballot over the time, I would salute him and welcome him back in the future. I think there's a lot of people that feel that Way one person writes, Matt, I think it would be good if he would spread the buyout over the remainder of the deal and agree that $1 million of a year of it will go to nil. I don't think he's gonna do that.
C
Why would he.
B
Why would he do that if he.
D
Starts coaching somewhere else?
B
I'm gonna give you $1 million of my money for you to get the.
D
Players that I'm trying to.
B
That I'm not coaching and. Yeah. That maybe I'm trying to recruit against. I think, Drew, that's probably unlikely.
E
Yeah, I don't even think he would agree to the length of the deal, but longer than 60 days could help a little bit.
B
Yeah, one person.
E
I'll give you 90 days.
B
One person says, matt, why didn't he do something like Ohtani with the Dodgers where they pay some. A lot of it on the back end? Well, Ohtani did that, but he's on the team. We would be. We would be getting rid of him, Shannon, and then paying on the back end. That's a little different than Ohtani still being on the team and doing.
C
Yeah, that doesn't make any sense. And I think he's going to stick with saying, hey, you got to pay me my money. Yeah, I don't think he's going to give on that.
B
You know, he got. Ohtani got a $700 million contract. I saw a story yesterday that the Dodgers have already made that back.
D
Oh, easily, probably.
B
We say easily $700 million. A lot of money.
C
But apparently with like jersey sales.
B
Jersey sales in Japan?
D
Yeah.
B
Yeah. I mean, that's amazing.
E
Don't they play a preseason game over there?
B
They have, they do. So, yeah. It's pretty. Did you watch the baseball last?
D
Loved it. Yeah, I'm into it.
B
George springer hit the three run home run.
D
36 years old guy limping around the bases. He's hurt and hits the home run.
B
Got his Kurt Gibson moment.
D
Kurt Gibson moment. Yep.
B
Yeah, it was. It was exciting in Toronto. You know, all of Canada's happy. Like, we hit him with tariffs. They make the World Series. Used to really drive Max crazy. We call it the World Series. He's like only two countries play. I don't know how you can say it's a World Series when you are not in the rest of the world. But nevertheless, are you excited to watch? Dodgers, Blue Jays?
E
Well, remember, I'm banned from the Blue Jays, so I can't watch. Yeah, but my favorite thing is I remember little chubby Vlad Jr. Standing by his dad and that picture went viral. It was like, this kid's going to the World Series now. So I thought that was pretty cool.
B
The I love moments of people celebrating. And that video after the home run of the place going insane. That's very cool. Like any sort of thing like that, I love.
D
Yeah, a friend of mine sent me some video of outside the stadium. Out in the streets outside the stadium, people are, you know, celebrating, partying.
G
It.
D
It makes you want to be there.
B
Yeah, it's a very Candida thing. I feel like they used to do. They did that for the Raptors too. They all stand out. I mean, other cities do it too, but they stand out there. It feels like the whole country watches it. Are you for Shannon, the Blue Jays or the Dodgers?
C
Oh, the Dodgers. I've hated the Blue J for 33 years. Remember 1992, the Braves, Joe Carter? Well, that was the Phillies.
B
91.
C
93 was the Phillies and Blue Jays. Braves were 92 with the Blue Jays. Blue Jays wanted back to back years.
B
Yes, but who was on that, that Blue Jays team? Steve?
D
Dave.
C
David Cone.
B
David cone, that's right. Yes.
C
David Vaughn White in center field.
B
Oh, wow, look that night.
C
That's John Olarud at first base.
B
Was he on the team then?
C
Yeah, he wore the helmet or the.
B
Batting helmet when he played in the field. Yeah. For the Blue Jays, though. I feel like the Dodgers are going to keep winning forever. We might as well have somebody different.
E
We can't let the Dodgers win. I don't care for the Blue Jays.
B
But they're the evil Empire.
C
Candy Maldonado.
D
Oh, my goodness.
C
Dave Winfield.
B
All right, that's plenty. Stop. Let's go to Bird. What's up, Bird?
C
Ed Sprague.
B
Stop with Ed Sprague. No one wants to hear Ed Spray. Go ahead.
E
The Dharma.
G
So I'm not calling to complain about UK not having a grass field like I normally do, but what I do want to ask you guys was if you saw Shannon Sharp, Chad Ochocinko and Johnny man. Johnny Manziel's comments post game.
B
I did. Here's the thing. I love Ocho Cinco being part of the whole UK thing. He was nice to Mario. I love all that. So I'm pro Ocho Cinco. I also have learned that you have to be careful when you, like, break down their analysis. Totally. Because Ocho Sico said, oh, all Kentucky does is run draw plays. And then somebody looked it up. They didn't run one draw play the whole game. So, you know. But his point about they don't Throw down field is correct. But I, I saw he basically criticized the play calling the whole game. I have criticisms on the end. But I would also argue though Bird, the play calling is what I mean. We were in overtime with the team that's got a lot more talent than us, you know.
G
Yeah, I would agree. And also I wanted to say I was at the game, had a great time at the game, but Chad Johnson or Ocho Cinco said he heard students and everybody chanting fire Stoops. I did not hear that. Maybe that was just a student section thing.
B
I did not hear. I appreciate the call. I did not hear it in the crowd where I was sitting, but I was like far away from the student so I didn't hear it.
E
Did you hear it a lot after the game? Now I'm in the press box so I don't hear the fans, but I heard it like in the park. You know, we're out there for the rapid reaction. I heard people going to their car cars yelling it not so much during the action.
B
It is interesting to me about Stoops. It's the exact opposite of what it was with Cal two years ago. The younger fans dislike Stoops the most, which is odd.
D
Yeah.
B
Because they were the ones, the younger fans, a lot of them that wanted to keep Cal the most, whereas the older fans were cut. Now, I think in this case, probably most people are ready to move on, but it does seem like Ryan. It's the younger fans 25, 30 and under that are the most anti Stoops.
D
I hadn't thought about that. But you're right. And we saw the.
B
It's just because they were never used to us being bad.
D
They don't know that's got to be UK football.
E
They don't know.
D
Those days we were one in 10 and two and 10 and those back in those days.
B
I mean, I think when you now there are older people who want him gone a lot too. But the younger fans have just a. And I think part of it is the younger fans sided with Cal and the Stoops vs. Cal rivalry a few years ago.
D
I see a lot.
E
I think the younger fans are meaner. The old people, they can still be mad, but they'll be like, he had a good few years. But you know, they at least add a caveat. If I have some positive memories, a lot of young people are just like, get him out of here.
B
Now.
E
The older people still mad, but they at least throw in a It was good for a little while.
B
I mean, we do those of us that are a little older do have the. I remember when we were pitiful, right. And that's a little different than we should win. But one of my arguments is losing its strength, which is this argument that you can't win at these other places. I just, I don't think that's true anymore. I think the landscape has changed and if you get the right guy, you can. Maybe you can't win a national championship, but you can make a playoff at a lot of these places. Right?
D
You're exactly right. You know the student section that was completely full. They were loud.
B
They were. And they were there early.
D
Yes, they were.
B
They were there very early.
D
So yet they still love the program, love the support, but yet they're going to turn on their coach and.
B
Yeah, Josh. What's up, Josh?
G
This is Josh from Henderson, Kentucky. I just wanted to call you guys and see if you would give a shout out to my son and his football team. He plays for North Middle School here in Henderson and he's playing in a state playoffs tonight. So I just want to see if you guys wish them good luck and wish the team luck.
B
And I do wish him luck. You know, I wish Henderson north luck. I appreciate the call. I don't like to take sides in these middle school football games. I'm for all Kentucky teams. Yeah.
D
What if they're playing Middlesboro? We don't know who they're playing.
E
I'm from Madisonville, so I don't know if I can speak on that one.
B
Yeah, if they're playing Middlesboro, Go Jackets. By the way, top two teams in the 13th region in football this year, both in Bell county. Bell county one. Middlesborough too.
D
Pineville three.
B
I don't know about them. We'll be right back. KSR, T.J. smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. he'll make him pay.
C
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
B
Welcome back, Kenny Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. Text machine 772-774-5254. Don Mattingly, by the way, is on the Blue Jays. Did you know that he never made a World Series? And he's a bench coach on the Blue Jays, So I feel like you were, you were a Don Mattingly guy, weren't you?
D
He's from EvansV and he, when I was working in media in Evansville, he was, that was. He was in his heyday, so he's a big hero. I got Don Mattingly autographs. I got one of his bats. I got A bunch of stuff.
E
That's twice his name has come up.
B
Who? Don Mattingly.
C
Yeah. Yeah. He was talking about it last week.
B
Who? You and Dom Mattingly.
D
Yeah.
B
I feel like I've heard that story 45 times, but I still like it because he gets excited. He's from Evansville. And then he. It's almost like he has the Don Magley script in his head and he just hits the button, Shannon. And then it comes out.
C
Yeah, because you said, like, what were the big stories when you were there doing the news? He said, Don Mattingly.
D
Don Mattingly.
B
You always say Don Mattingly. That's his.
D
It was the story.
E
Evansville forces Don Mattingly on you. When you cross the bridge, they're like, hey, by the way, did you know Don Mattingly is from here? You should go eat at Mattingly. And just Mattingly. Maddeningly.
D
Maddeningly.
B
One person writes, Matt, the. You are exactly right about the younger fans. They're not used to losing games like that. We've lost games like we lost Saturday a hundred times in the past. It is true. One of the things Stoops did during his tenure is he got us to kind of forget the. Oh, no. How's Kentucky going to blow this? Right. Because he had a number of years where we won games like this.
D
Yes, absolutely.
B
You know, I mean, there was a time though, even in his first couple years where you just knew, how was this going to fall apart and break our hearts? Remember those first few years here? We had that game we played at Mississippi State. We almost beat him. We watched it with the Sklar brothers, if you remember, out at Drake's. And then like, we lost to Florida when they, the, the, the play clock was at zero and they didn't call it. You remember that?
D
Yeah.
B
And we had the holding call that one year, like there were all these years, and then all of a sudden he turned it around and we started winning those games. But people forget that for most of my Kentucky football life, we lost games like Saturday all the time.
D
Yeah.
B
Every time a game was like that, it's like, how's it going to break my heart?
E
Kentucky football fans can name 100 plays where we lost a game, but then something switched and you started getting your lamar fumble, your McGinnis field goal, your Bud Dupree run back, your CJ Conrad at Missouri, at South Carolina running back, the two point conversion. It's like Kentucky started making the winning plays in the fourth quarter.
D
And those college kids now were 8, 9, 10 years old going to these games, tailgating when it Was fun. So they remember those glory days.
B
All right, so I'm going to throughout this. In between these phone calls, do a couple quick stories. Did you see Big Z said, I got contacts and now I can see the rim for the first time in three years. First of all, should have done that before. Remember the Harrison twins?
D
Oh, yes.
B
Squinted. Andrew Harrison squinting. And they're like, oh, he got contacts. And he actually did play better after he got contacts. Is there a chance there's a big Z revival at Illinois this year? Because he can actually see if not.
E
For that Georgia game. I need him to explain the Georgia game. Was he just aiming at the middle rim?
D
Blind luck.
E
It is funny that he's played basketball for this long and, you know, especially at Arkansas and in Kentucky when he was here, there's all this technology, all these doctors. At no point, no one's been like, hey, man, you can't.
B
But do you think Cal teams don't check eyesight? Well, you mentioned the same thing with Andrew Harrison.
D
Yeah.
B
That he was the same way. He was like, I couldn't see last year and now they have a basic physical.
C
I mean, you would think they would check stuff like that.
B
I don't think they check your eyesight.
C
We need to start.
D
I'm going to be on the side of the fence that his eyesight was okay when he was here. And they maybe started getting bad in Arkansas and they got the Illinois and it really got bad. Something about the Illinois air messed with his eyesight, maybe.
B
Well, let's. If he has a big year at.
D
Illinois, shoots the ball really well.
B
That would be hilarious if it was like, oh, oh, this is what I'm aiming at. This is easy. What? Yeah, because you're right. If there's three rims and you have to hit one of them, it's harder game.
C
Aim for the one in the middle.
B
Yeah. So interesting to see, but yes, it was. It was an Andrew or Aaron that couldn't see. It was Andrew. Right.
E
Well, it's kind of both of them, honestly. Yeah, they both squinted a lot.
B
Do twins have the same eyesight?
D
They probably have the same genetic makeup. Yeah.
B
I mean, you're not saying that or do you know?
D
Well, I was married to a twin for a long time, and they do.
B
You all talked about their eyesight. You took her and her sister Shannon. They went and got their eyesight measured all the time.
C
Yeah. Together. Let me see. Better One or two.
B
I didn't realize you were married to a twin.
D
My first wife was a twin.
B
Did you all ever Pull any pranks? No. No antics.
E
Were they identical?
D
They did. When they were saying, did they.
B
Do they do it with you? Did you ever test to see if you knew which one was which?
D
Not with me, but they did it with another guy back in Owensboro.
C
So does that mean you were attracted to her sister?
D
Let's not get into this.
C
I'm just saying she's the same. It looks exactly.
B
It is a fair point. I have. Shannon, I have wondered that exact thing. If you date a twin, are you.
C
Attracted to your wife?
B
Are you allowed to say you're attracted? The system.
C
I mean, I think it's probably implied, right?
E
I mean, it's. It's something you don't want to answer because a no could go wrong.
B
They look like you can't answer. But if you say no, like, oh, you're not attracted to me. If you say yes, you're attracted to.
E
Her sister, I think that's when you go, I only have eyes for one person.
B
There you go.
E
Didn't even know you had a sister.
B
Jacob. Go ahead, Jacob.
G
Hey, Matt, two questions for you. Question number one. Wanted to kind of hear what you think the best, the best situation is for Kentucky football. Looking ahead, I know Vandy is definitely on the rise. I don't think that game is. Is winnable.
B
You mean this year? This year.
G
This year?
D
Yes, sir.
B
Well, I mean, the best situation, if you were to say, okay, what if every single thing went right, then you would say, beat Florida, beat Auburn, steal one of Vandy, Louisville get to six. I don't think that's going to happen. I think the most likely situation is we'll win one of these games, we'll pull one of these out, we'll finish four and eight. That's. That's what I think is most likely the worst situation is you go three and nine and after the Auburn or Florida game, the kind of team just quits and you get run out of the stadium by Louisville and you beat Tennessee Tech by three at the buzzer. So I mean, like, that's the worst scenario, but I think the most likely scenario is we steal one of these and we finish four night.
G
Yeah. Yeah. Question number two. A name that I've kind of been thinking about that I've not really heard a whole lot of people mention former offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson.
B
Yeah, we can.
G
Offensive coordinator.
B
I mean, it didn't work here. Like you. That's not gonna make me excited.
C
But if it would have liked it.
B
Yeah, I mean, I just. I also think maybe. Yeah, I don't want to get into. I just. That's probably not going to happen. But, I mean, maybe that'll change, but I doubt it.
G
Yeah. Yeah, it's. I mean, I just. You know, I know that his. His tenure wasn't the best here, but he did come back and beat us with Southern Miss and, you know, he.
B
Did, and he's obviously done a good job with Miami. Yeah, I appreciate the call. Let me ask you a question. I don't like to talk about other coaches when you have a coach, but you know what? It's Tuesday. All the names that are out there, what's the one that UK fans would be the most excited about? Okay. The one that if it was announced, everybody goes crazy. Let me give. And I. I mean realistic. Okay. So here are the realistic names. In theory, I could see being that Some Raw. Will Stein, Brian Hartline, Dan Mullen. I don't know if James Franklin's realistic, but let's just throw him in there. I don't think Mitch would hire him for a variety of reasons. Let's throw him in there. Who am I missing that's out there? That could be someone that people would want.
E
I kind of like the Arizona State coach. I don't know if he would come here.
B
Yeah, I don't know if he would come.
E
He's got some fire.
B
Yeah, I like him, too. I'm gonna say he probably wouldn't come, but maybe. But he's already been in the playoffs, so I don't know why he would do that. So let's just take those five. I just said Some Raw Stein heartline, Mullen, Franklin. Which of those gets introduced and fans are the most excited?
E
I still think it's Some Raw. By far. Stein's popular, but I think a lot of the common fans still don't really know who it is. Some Raw played here, coached here not that long ago and has been in the conversation for a couple of years where if you've been paying attention at all, you know of who John Summerall is right now, then I would go Stein second for me, James Franklin. James Franklin is 150th.
B
But you think the young guys get people more excited than the names people know.
D
Yes.
E
And the idea of having especially with some Raw Pope leading basketball and Some Raw leading football, you have two former players who are young and have endless energy. I think that would be fun.
B
What about you?
D
Drew's dead on it. Is John Summeral at the top. Then there's a big drop. I think the Will Stein. Just because we've Been talking about John Summer all now for over two years.
B
What if it was damn Mo?
E
I don't know if Mitch would do that one and I wouldn't love it but it wouldn't be the worst thing I would wins.
D
Yeah. I wouldn't hate it.
B
I mean he's one. His reputation, he's one, he's, he won more at Florida. I mean the only thing that got him out fired at Florida was losing us so much. Like, like, I mean he was, he, he, he won like what nine or ten straight games in there at Florida. Three or four years. One, nine or ten. It's just they kind of didn't.
D
Couldn't beat it.
E
Mississippi State. He just kicked our tail every year.
D
Yeah.
B
And he, he's, he was undefeated at UN last week. I just, I would say that's a name. I mean I think the most likely scenario is we get one of these young guys but I would just say if it ends up happening, don't dismiss that name. I think we have a ad with some connections to him. Just something to keep in mind. Clayton and Croom was founded on a simple idea. All leather goods should last a lifetime. They make everything from bags, belts, wallets and much more. And the best part, they're doing it right here in Kentucky. You could check them out at clayton and croom.com that c r u me.com I saw my mom and Larry stayed at my house last night. My mom's got a little like her little computer bag. Is Clayton and Croom nice Cru yours as well. Look at that. The retail store is on Shelby street in Nulu. Quality leather goods built to last. Clayton and Croom. We'll take a break. Be right back.

Welcome back, techie Sports Radio. Interesting on the text machine. The names are all over the place. It's not all summer. Like there are a lot of people whose number one choice seems to be Brian Hartline. And there's a lot of people who are saying Will Stein and there are people who say Mullen. A lot of people. Nobody said James Franklin, which is odd because he's the most accomplished Copa coach of the group. But I think everybody just hates him.
E
And his record against in like meaningful games is not good.
B
But I mean, if our record of meaningful games were that, we'd still be fine with it. I mean, our recording non meaningful games has not been great.
E
Well, our record against James Franklin and meaningful games is 1 0.
B
Yeah, on Mullen. No, he ran up the score on us. Oh, you mean in the Penn State.
E
Yes, yes, on Mullen. Barnhart has the Florida AD and he had the Mississippi State ID while AD while Mullen was there. So he will have his research done.
B
Yeah, Dillingham, that's not going to happen because I mean he went to Arizona State too. So you know you're going to leave your alma mater to come to Kentucky. I mean, why would you?
E
I forgot he was an alum.
B
Why would you do that?
D
Yeah, somebody texted me. The Vanderbilt coach? Same thing. He went to Vanderbilt. He played at Vanderbilt.
B
Yeah, I mean the Vanderbilt coach didn't Leave it either you have to remember like those jobs are now equal or better than our job.
D
Yes, it is now.
B
Yeah. I mean that's so there might have been a day you could have taken the Vandy coach. I don't know that that day is here, not right now. Is here now. One person writes. Matt, what do we think about Cutter Boli's improvement? Is he the quarterback of the future? Depends on who the court depends on the coach. Right. I mean I think you could say if Mark Stoops was the coach next year, I would want Cutter Bowie back. Wouldn't you?
D
I absolutely would. You know, you're trying to seem start to develop a little bit with Willie Rodriguez and Harley Gilmore. Who will we Wadwig is It is hard to say.
E
I do that too.
B
You said Willie Wabuig.
D
It's hard to say when you're talking fast.
B
Willie Rodriguez.
D
Yeah. Harley Gilmore. They're all sophomores, you know, they're all something they can young and kind of build their offense around.
C
He's doing this Elmer Fudding Wabb we the Waskly wagon.
B
I mean I love Cutter Bowley and I, we have seen him get better every single game.
D
Yep.
B
But your quarterback next year is going to depend on who your coach is. I think you don't bring in someone if you bring in another coach. You don't, you don't let them cook the meal unless they can pick the ingredients. Right. So we saw that with, with Levitt or with Cohen and Devin learn. Right. Devin Leary may have been perfectly fine, but it wasn't the kind of quarterback Cohen likes. Right. And the same thing might have been true with Bush and Vandegrift last year. Right?
D
Yeah.
E
But I would say unless that coach has one to bring, he might see Cutter Bowley. Willie. Right. Why we guess Harley Gilmore. I'll throw in Jason Patterson. There's a lot of second year guys in that offense that you can work with.
B
Adam Luckett made a great point on the pregame show. If you didn't hear it, Luck it went looked at our roster and basically said we had two recruiting classes that stunk. That that stat he said blew me away. So think about this Shannon. The 21 and 20 was it 22 and 23? The 22 and 23 recruiting class. We only have seven dudes left from those two classes and only a couple of combined seven. And we only have one that plays a lot.
D
Yeah. Ty Bryant I think was Alex Afari Alfari.
B
That's crazy.
E
And those are supposed to be your seniors and Juniors. And it's a lot of names we know. We. I mean, I think even Wilcox, who's one of the seven on the team, is one of those.
B
It doesn't plot.
E
Maybe he's not. But regardless, the ones that left a lot of more big pieces of your program. Think about when you got like Keonte Goodwin and Grant Bingham as these huge offensive linemen and neither one of them played college football, but those were two of your biggest.
B
And his point was you missed on all those. Now, in that sophomore class, we hit on a lot of guys, but we don't. We didn't hit on any juniors and seniors, which is a good point. I hadn't really thought about it until he rt. I mean, we only have seven guys from two classes left. Blew my mind when he said that's amazing, Jerry. Go ahead, Jerry.
G
Hey, Matt, I don't know how much you've been following us and go with the suits, what's going on in Florida because that may affect in Kentucky because, you know, Spur is really close to the athletic director down there and he's got a. He's on a podcast over weekend. He's does a radio show.
B
But anyway, former Kentucky Sid Scott Strickland. So. Yeah, but go ahead.
G
Right, right, right. But. But anyway, spurs got an office down the hall for him and sits in his box every week for the football games. And the two coaches Spur talks about all the time are Bomb and Drinkwitz and Braun most of all. And I suspected if they don't get Kiffin and everybody kind of thinks it's not going to happen. But if, if nobody Kiffin say no. If they'll get Kiffin, they're gonna come after Jeff Braum big time. And little man get ready to pay to back up the bank Brinks charts keep.
B
Yeah, but they would I think and I appreciate the call. I mean now he might still want to go because you could win a national championship at Florida. But again, Jeff Brown went to Louisville. Like getting these guys to leave their alma mater has got to be hard, right?
D
I agree.
E
But I was surprised to see this. I got an email this morning said odds to be neck Florida's next coach. And Jeff Braum was second under Lane Kiffin. Kiffin was 2 to 1, Brahm was 3 to 1. So something maybe is brewing.
B
I mean, Lane Kiffin has to take that job, right? Like he's made for that job. Lane Kiffin at Florida seems that way.
E
Ole Miss could give him a big payday, but just the talent pool in Gainesville.
D
But it's Just.
B
I just think you. Lane Kiffin is like the spiritual heir to Steve Spurrier. Right.
E
Like, even been open about how.
B
Like the same sort of brashness. I mean, I feel like if you wanted to get Florida football back, Lane Kiffin's the way to do it. Right.
D
It's like father, son. They're like, yeah, the mentor, protege. That is the guy that perfect fit for Florida. He would just be playing Kiffin.
B
Perfect mentality.
D
Yep.
B
Yeah, Charlie, go ahead. Charlie.
G
Hey, man. I've been a huge Mark Stoops fan and Kentucky football fan for my entire life. Met Mark coming off the plane at R.J. corman. Almost had a heart attack at Papa John Stadium when they beat Lamar. And he bought my meal one time whenever I met him at a restaurant. So I've been a huge fan.
B
Yeah.
G
Last. The last two years been pretty tough. If I'm Mark, I don't know what the drawback is, but I would take an extended contract, a buyout of like 10 year, just spread my contract without 10 years. What's the drawback to that?
B
Well, I mean, there's a drawback of, you know, for people who have a lot of money, if it's the same amount, you'd rather have it up front so you could invest it and so you can make money on your own money. It's the same theory as to why banks want you to put money in so that they can go make the money from your money.
C
Think about 10 years of interest.
B
Yeah, I mean, it's. But, yeah, it's exactly. Or 10. Not just interest. 10 years of investment. So that's. That's why the answer is. But you're exactly right. The core amount is the same and money is worth less over time because of inflation and other things. So that's the. That's the counter to it.
G
I would. I would say, well, maybe if there's no strings attached, he can go coach anywhere he wants to and make more money.
B
Well, I mean, I appreciate the call. Is he going to get a job that he's not going to get a job pays him this amount of money?
E
No, not this amount of money.
B
I mean, he'll get a job. Get a job.
E
There'll be a lot of job.
B
But I think he'll. I honestly think his next job would probably be at like a PAC 12 or not pack 12 doesn't exist anymore, but big 12, ACC, secondary school. Right. It'd be at, like, I don't know, Boston College.
D
Yeah.
E
What if Iowa finally opened?
B
I mean, but today, I mean, would.
E
They if any team loved his style, it's all they know now.
B
He would be good there. I don't think any of these jobs, he's not going to get paid when he gets paid here. Not right now, I wouldn't think so.
E
I don't think anybody's going to be paying like what he's getting right now.
B
859-280-2287 we're going to take a break, take your calls. Talk about a couple other things as well.
