Nmlsconsumeraccess.Org welcome to hour two of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome back. It is our number two Kenya Sports Radio 859-280-2287 text machine is 772-774-5254. KS Bar now open. It is Wednesday Dollar Wings all day and evening. We're here again tomorrow and then Friday we are at Don Franklin Big Weekend UK Purdue Friday night. Remember that game's at 6 o'. Clock. It's earlier than people realize. I don't think they realize it's 6 o'. Clock. So you have to our pregame show will be at 3 o' clock that day and then UK Tennessee on on Saturday night we get Tom Hart the next two weeks. Tom Hart. This Tom Hart is doing UK Purdue.
Ryan Lemond
Okay.
Matt Jones
Then he's doing UK Tennessee and then he's doing UK Auburn next week. So we have three straight Tom Hargate.
Ryan Lemond
Might as well just stay here for the whole week.
Matt Jones
Just Auburn game is there. If he stays here he'll miss it. But otherwise for the other ones, yes he can.
Drew Franklin
Looking forward to the Tom games. We focus on Tom, but I just like having Tom Jordan and Cole. I really think they're the best group out there.
Matt Jones
I agree.
Ryan Lemond
They're a good group.
Matt Jones
All right, couple things. 859-280-2287 you know, I like 11 o' clock having some different news. All right. I read this. You know ice, they've been in the news. They come and they, they. Well, I'm not gonna get into It. I don't. I don't need to be getting. I don't need to get everybody worked up, but they come and they do ice things, okay? Now they. They. They are hiring, like, more ice people because they want to have more ice people. So they have hiring standards to go to ice. Here are the hiring standards. You have to be able to do 14 or 15 push ups, 32 sit ups, which seems like an oddly very specific number. 32 sit ups, and you have to be able to run a mile and a half in 14 minutes. So, you know, they've been flooding the ice academy with ice people, but. But now they're saying, hey, folks, y' all need to slow down sending us people, because 38 of the people they've sent cannot do those things. So they've gone to the academy. As soon as they've gotten there, they've had to go back home because they can't do those things. So here's my question for the group. Could you do that today? 15 push ups, 32 sit ups, a mile and a half in 14 minutes. Ryan?
Ryan Lemond
I could do the push ups. I could do the setups, but there's not a chance I could do the mile in 15 minutes, mile and a.
Matt Jones
Half in 14 minutes.
Ryan Lemond
I couldn't do it.
Matt Jones
You don't think you could?
Ryan Lemond
I don't think I could do it.
Matt Jones
All right. What about you?
Drew Franklin
Mile and a half is absolute. No, I don't want to think about running that far. I'm gonna drive that far.
Commercial Announcer
Sit ups.
Drew Franklin
I think I could pull off push ups. Probably not.
Matt Jones
Okay, Shannon?
Shannon Dawson
Oh, yeah. I could do this easy.
Matt Jones
You could do. I feel like you could do like.
Shannon Dawson
Shannon could do it twice on Sunday. That's no problem at all.
Matt Jones
So I could do the sit ups. I think I could do the mile and a half, maybe. I don't think I could do the push ups. So that's. I'm almost certain I couldn't do the push ups. I think I'm certain I could do the sit ups. I don't think I could do the push ups. And then I think I'd be close on that mile and a half. I don't know. It'd be. Because I don't run a lot, but I walk a lot. I. I think I could do it, but I think it'd be really.
Shannon Dawson
You could do it? I think you could do.
Matt Jones
You think I could do it?
Shannon Dawson
I do the push ups and the sit ups that you just mentioned every day, so I know you could do those.
Matt Jones
I can't do the. I don't think I can do the push ups.
Shannon Dawson
Yeah, you could do 15 push ups.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I mean, maybe if I practice. I think if I tried to do. Right now, I don't know if I could do it. I could do the sit ups.
Drew Franklin
I've got a bum arm, but even with a good arm, I. I don't know.
Matt Jones
I'm not. I know this may surprise you. I'm not huge on upper body strength. I don't have. You know, I don't let. Ma', Am, I don't lift weights as much as you probably think I do. I'm not pumping a lot of iron, so I don't know if that's. I don't know if I'm gonna be able to do it.
Drew Franklin
I decided about a year or two ago. Barring a fire or someone chasing me, I'm just not running like that. Don't have a need to run.
Matt Jones
You have shin splints, right?
Drew Franklin
I did. Those have gotten better. Believe those aside, I don't want excuse. I'm just not running. I've decided I'm. Unless it's an emergency, I'm not running.
Matt Jones
So we think Shannon's in ice and.
Ryan Lemond
It can do it.
Matt Jones
I would probably just not choose to be in it. But maybe if I did a little practice. But you to say no.
Ryan Lemond
I would have to get into a little shape to do the mile and a half in 14 minutes.
Matt Jones
I feel like you could do it, though, if you practice.
Ryan Lemond
If I practice.
Matt Jones
Because, I mean, I've seen you run like you're not.
Ryan Lemond
You have, like, right now to walk out of here. Try to do it. There is not a chance I could do that.
Matt Jones
Okay, well, maybe Shannon will be the only one. And honestly, Shannon's the one who most likely would join us out the four of us.
Shannon Dawson
I think you don't know what I'm doing in my spare time now.
Matt Jones
You may be. I mean, they're wearing masks, so how do I know it's not you right now?
Drew Franklin
What kind of vacation time do they get?
Matt Jones
They shouldn't be able to wear masks. All right. When did we get to a world where we have our policemen in mask? Like, that's that. Put everything else aside. We should not have policemen in mass. That's the stuff they do in, like, you know, third world countries. All right, I'm done. 859-280-2287. Louisville signed a player from the G League. What do you think of that?
Drew Franklin
We're. We've been out of control. Now we're Too out of control when you're getting G league commitments in college basketball.
Ryan Lemond
I can't believe that's allowed. I really can't.
Matt Jones
I'm good with it.
Ryan Lemond
How are you?
Matt Jones
Yeah, I'm good with. I mean, I. First of all, it's a rule that's allowed. I didn't know it was a rule. I actually had no idea it was a rule. So put aside. But I'm so. And I think Louisville, if it's a rule, should certainly do it. Would you agree?
Ryan Lemond
Agreed.
Matt Jones
If it's a rule and it's allowed, then Louisville should do it. Like, the point is not if you don't like a rule. It's. It's like I say, with taxes, there are many things on the tax code that I do not think people should be able to exploit. But if I can, I should do it. Right. Even if I don't agree with it, I should do it. Why would you? Why wouldn't you? Same thing here. I'm good with it because of this. It was a G league ignite player, which is one of those people that didn't play college basketball. The G league ignite is for people who, like, didn't get drafted. I'm fine with it. I'll even go further. I think we should have a system where when these guys get drafted, if they're not ready to play in the NBA, let them play in college. Why not? That's how it used to be. People forget about that. Like, Larry Bird was drafted by the Celtics and then went back to Indiana State for a year.
Ryan Lemond
Kyle Macy did it here.
Matt Jones
Oh, did he?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I didn't know.
Ryan Lemond
He got drafted a year early, came back, played one more year, and then went to the Suns, I believe.
Matt Jones
Is that right?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
See, I didn't even know that. So I'm fine with it. I don't think you should be able to take an NBA salary in the NBA. And come back. But I don't. College basketball has a chance to be the number one developmental system in the world for basketball. Why not just do it? Like, why not just do it? What's the harm? What's the harm? Is there a harm?
Drew Franklin
I'm not opposed to drafting them and storing them here, I guess. Really? I just don't understand what the G league ignite is right now.
Matt Jones
I think it's going away.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, it's more of just the G league ignite thing. I don't understand. It feels like a college, but with NBA affiliation.
Matt Jones
I had an agent tell me a couple days ago they think the G League in general may go away and that the NBA may just say, why am I paying for this G League? Let's just send all these people to college. Let's let college do this for free. Why are we paying to do it when college basketball can do it? And I think there's something to that, right?
Ryan Lemond
I mean, we've got yellow vicinity who played professionally, you know.
Matt Jones
Well, that's the other argument. If these guys can play professionally in Europe and then play college basketball, then why can't they play professionally in America and play college basketball? We're literally making it easier. I'm not, not trying to sound MAGA here, but we're literally making it easier for foreigners to play basketball than we are Americans. Why would you do that?
Drew Franklin
Doesn't make sense. It's so inconsistent that you can go over and make a big check playing pro basketball, but just because it wasn't the NBA, you're able to play.
Matt Jones
Yeah, so I'm actually fine with it. I mean, at Louisville, people took my tweet about it as criticism. It was not criticism. I literally didn't know it was a rule. You're gonna see more people do this. Why wouldn't you take a 20 year old that's played two years of G League? That's gonna be better than a high school kid, isn't it?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. And with the transfer portal, you get these older kids. Building your rush with older kids anyway, so I can see why it could.
Matt Jones
Be a success finally. Travis Perry and Jordan Burks, two former cats. Travis Perry plays in a his first exhibition game. Ole Miss plays at Houston preseason number two Ole Miss wins Travis Perry for three pointers. You concerned at all that Travis Perry is going to be Johnny Ju zanging it up for Ole Miss this year?
Drew Franklin
I'm not concerned. I am happy for Travis that he had a big game. I hope it goes well at Ole Miss. But as a Kentucky fan, I'm not, you know, better. Night having nightmares about what Travis Perry could do. But I'm genuinely happy they had a big game and hope it goes well for him.
Ryan Lemond
I'm going to be one of those guys. I hope he does that every game he plays in, except against us. I hope he does great success down there. I think we all are big Travis Perry fans.
Matt Jones
All right. What about Central Florida? You probably didn't follow. They played Duke last night. Jordan Burks, you guys remember that guy he played at Kentucky? Jordan Burks had 25 points, 18 in the first half. Central Florida led Duke at halftime and Jordan Burks had 18. What about Jordan Burks?
Drew Franklin
That one's pretty surprising. Not much of a factor here at uk. I remember interviewing him when he first got here and he was big on being a one and done and the whole Cal thing.
Matt Jones
He was one and done here.
Ryan Lemond
That's true.
Drew Franklin
I think he went on to Georgetown. Maybe now another stop. But yeah, no, that one surprises me. Didn't see much of that potential while he was here.
Ryan Lemond
I've not been on my radar, but I know he was Shannon, the dude's favorite player there, I think that season.
Matt Jones
Was he Shannon?
Ryan Lemond
No.
Drew Franklin
Think you're confusing with Bryce Hopkins.
Shannon Dawson
Bryce Hopkins was my guy.
Matt Jones
Yeah. No, no, he was not my favorite. Did you have any, any affinity for Jordan Burks at all?
Shannon Dawson
I mean, yeah, he's on the team. I like that he was a Kentucky Wildcat, but other than that, nothing special about him that I saw.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Epic Vandy game. Shout out Jordan Burks for a big game advent.
Matt Jones
He have a big game against Vandy.
Ryan Lemond
I don't have my memory memory of Jordan Burke.
Matt Jones
I feel like the only thing I remember Jordan Burke's doing is shooting. Fade away 15 footers.
Shannon Dawson
Did he win like the dunk contest or was that somebody else I'm thinking about?
Ryan Lemond
I think.
Matt Jones
I don't remember.
Drew Franklin
I don't remember.
Matt Jones
I would say there are very few scholarship players in the history of Kentucky basketball that I have less memories about. Can you think of any other scholarship player that you're like? Because almost everybody, like even like Nate Knight. I can remember there was a game where he got fouled and got an and one.
Ryan Lemond
I don't remember anything. Jordan 1.
Matt Jones
Jordan Burks play anybody?
Ryan Lemond
No. We're all just staring plank into the space.
Drew Franklin
I know that maybe there have been, there might have been some frustrations for the team.
Matt Jones
He bought backpacks for the team.
Drew Franklin
There we go.
Matt Jones
Well, that's good.
Shannon Dawson
And he was the surprise winner in the dunk contest. I see it.
Drew Franklin
Right?
Matt Jones
He did, yes. Okay, there we go. Well, there you go.
Drew Franklin
So I know at halftime of the Oakland game there might have been some frustrations in the locker room that he.
Ryan Lemond
Was a part of.
Matt Jones
There was, yes.
Drew Franklin
Not necessarily his fault. I think the whole team was frustrated.
Matt Jones
Let's real quick. What would be the games where you would like to do one of those journey videos in UK history? Let's the moments that would been the best to have behind the scenes Oakland game, halftime and post game is on my list. The famous plane ride from hell. Coming back on the tubby years with Gerald Fitch and Corey Sears.
Shannon Dawson
What else Kentucky Vandy. Halftime. Josh Harrelson.
Matt Jones
Oh, Kentucky Vandy. Josh Harrelson getting left in the bathroom stall. Definitely. Definitely would love to have had that.
Ryan Lemond
Something happened at the SEC tournament at halftime of that game when Reed, shepherd, and Rob, those guys were on the team. Something happened at halftime of that game. I think some coaches and players had to be separated.
Matt Jones
What?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
This is the same year as Oakland.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
No, wait a minute. Is this Brian Lemon Scoop?
Ryan Lemond
No, we talked about it with. We didn't really go into detail, but something happened at halftime of that game.
Matt Jones
So you're saying at halftime that was Texas A M?
Ryan Lemond
I believe it was Texas A M. Yeah.
Matt Jones
Halftime of Texas A and M. And then we lost to Oakland. So you're saying that may have taken root against A and M. Yeah. Well, give us a little scoop.
Ryan Lemond
I'm not sure. I'm not going to go in a lot of detail. I know something happened.
Matt Jones
How about some scuttlebutt?
Ryan Lemond
Coaches and players had to be separated.
Matt Jones
Coaches and players had to be separated.
Ryan Lemond
If you remember second half, does he may remember this? Reed and Rob were like, non existent that second half of that game.
Matt Jones
Are you Shannon? Do you remember this?
Shannon Dawson
No.
Matt Jones
I mean, I'm not saying. You're wrong. I have no memory of this. Right. Drew.
Ryan Lemond
Help me, Drew.
Drew Franklin
I know that story as the Oakland game. Maybe it happened twice.
Matt Jones
I know there was an issue. Not a fight, but I know there was an issue at halftime of the Oakland game. I have not heard of coaches and players being separated in the A and.
Drew Franklin
M. Same team a week apart.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Maybe they went back to back.
Matt Jones
I mean. I mean, listen. Yes. I mean, Scoop, two years later. Can we get a two years later Scoop?
Ryan Lemond
I'm just. I know I've said everything. I know something happened at halftime. If you look at the game, too, they were a completely different team the second half. Something happened.
Shannon Dawson
You said, I don't want to get into the details.
Matt Jones
But you clearly have details.
Shannon Dawson
What you're saying.
Matt Jones
Okay, let's put it like this. Do you know more details than you're saying?
Ryan Lemond
Not really. I don't. I know something happened.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Ryan Lemond
He is.
Shannon Dawson
He is.
Matt Jones
He is backtracking.
Shannon Dawson
Because there's a minute ago. He goes. I don't want to get into the details.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he is backtracking like a politician here.
Ryan Lemond
All right, We've brought it up on here, though.
Matt Jones
I don't remember it. I remember Oakland and Drew and I knew the Oakland thing happened the night up, which was part of why I said, we've got to make a change the Oakland thing.
Drew Franklin
It's almost like people on the team thought other people should be playing instead of the ones playing.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I think, well, that's a whole thing. But I want to know what Ryan's talking about. Maybe he'll tell me during the break. Court Physical Therapy let's say, let's say we go for the ice challenge and we're hurting, which is probably would be what would happen if we have pain, stiffness or a numbing sensation. Matt Jones
You know, I do feel like Shannon when they pull up. Yeah, this should be playing through the.
Shannon Dawson
Speakers like an ice.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean like if, if, if they come in you play ice ice baby. And I feel like that would be. I think people wouldn't be as negative about them if they, if you got to hear a jam while it was.
Ryan Lemond
If they got out with their mask on and did the dance before they.
Matt Jones
They shouldn't have a mask.
Shannon Dawson
The COVID though.
Matt Jones
All right, but they shouldn't have a cover. They are like our police officers don't wear mask. Like if, if you're like why our police are our public officials don't like why do they wear. I just think that's a bad look. Our military doesn't wear masks when they walk down the street. Now they're in a foreign country, but this is America. Like we're not supposed to be like all these, but you know, see your face.
Drew Franklin
See what you got going on back there?
Matt Jones
Now, I don't think people should, like, what do you call it? Dox people. I got it. You shouldn't threaten those people. They're doing their job. I'm fine. But like, you should not hide your face. It's a bad. In America, we shouldn't do those things. Now go ahead.
Ryan Lemond
I was gonna say behinding your face. You're giving the impression you're doing something wrong or illegal.
Matt Jones
And if somebody, you know, listen, every, every job has people who occasionally abuse. You don't know who did it. If you don't, like, I just, I, I think that's a wrong. Put everything else about it aside. That's a wrong president. Now what about $50,000 though? You get a $50,000 bonus for signing up. Would that make you learn to do 15 push up? Well, you already do the 15 push. Would that make you learn to run a mile and a half?
Shannon Dawson
Yeah, just dangle that money in front of them.
Matt Jones
I think I just, I think we just lost our co host, dude.
Ryan Lemond
50,000. I.
Matt Jones
It's a 50,000 sign up bonus.
Ryan Lemond
Well, I could sign up and then not follow through with my responsibility.
Matt Jones
I think they make you give. I don't think the government's like, here, take 50,000, work a week and then quit. I don't think they're gonna let you do that.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, I could learn with my short, stubby little legs to get a mile and a half in 14 minutes.
Matt Jones
One person writes, you and Drew should be ashamed. Every man should be able to do 15 push ups. Men are supposed to be protectors. Well, I'm not.
Shannon Dawson
At least you have self awareness.
Matt Jones
I cannot, I can't protect myself much less anyone else. Drew. So I, if that's what men supposed to be. I fail.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I haven't even. I can't remember last time. I've tried one and I got a bum arm. Lay off me. And who cares if I can do one or not?
Matt Jones
All right. Some other players where people say they don't have any memories. Morino Williams. Oh, do you have a basketball or memory of Morino Williams?
Drew Franklin
I don't one involving a basketball or one with him being around a basketball game. I can remember like benchmarks.
Matt Jones
Well, he, he and Dusty Mills laughing On the sideline. We can remember that. I don't remember anything involving.
Drew Franklin
I can't remember him getting the rock and making a play.
Matt Jones
Joey Hart.
Drew Franklin
I was gonna say. I was gonna say Joey Hart, but he was the madness superstar this one year.
Ryan Lemond
Yep, he did.
Matt Jones
Stacy Poole, Jr. I can remember antics, but they were.
Ryan Lemond
Elsewhere, not on the court.
Matt Jones
Yes, he was.
Drew Franklin
His friends live next door to me, so I remember Stacy Poole from being in the cul de sac, but not on the basketball team.
Matt Jones
Cam Fletcher.
Ryan Lemond
Well, the big memory I have of him, of him walking off the bench, going in the locker room during the game.
Matt Jones
So your basketball memories, him leaving.
Ryan Lemond
Walking during the game, leaving the bench and going to the locker room.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Drew Franklin
Didn't you date Angel Reese?
Matt Jones
I remember him for that, but I mean, on the basketball guy. Yeah, I mean, that's. It's interesting when you don't have any memory. Apparently Jordan Burks bought fans stuff at Target. So you were talking about the players. I guess it was fans he was in. Oh, he also bags. Okay.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, they were in line at Target checkout line. And he was behind some people, and.
Matt Jones
He was behind them, and he bought, like, a fake grocery. So. That's very nice. That is very nice. All right, who's up next?
Shannon Dawson
Carson.
Matt Jones
Carson. Go ahead, Carson.
Caller
Congrats on 20 years. I was just wondering if Stoops. When Stoops wins today, I should. This isn't an. When he wins today, will he be the catch here next year when he wins Saturday? Saturday.
Matt Jones
No, no, no, no. Listen. If he were to beat Tennessee Saturday, I do think it changes the equation. A Tennessee win is probably the best thing he could do because it's probably even bigger than a Texas win because Tennessee's our rival and we lose to them so much. So, yeah, I mean, the equation does change if he beats Tennessee. I think that's fair.
Caller
So you think that would be fair. And then, I mean, I don't know why the last guy was so bad about Dan Mullen, because I feel like that would be a lot better than probably what we have now. And like any of these guys, I think, are more like highly operable and ready to coach versus, you know, I don't know. Marks, too. Just seems like he doesn't have it anymore.
Matt Jones
I don't know what you all think. I appreciate the call. I don't understand that guy's negativity about Dan Mullen either. I mean, he kept saying, dan Mullen is Mark Stoops. Dan Mullen is Mark Stoops before the downturn. And if you told me tomorrow. Drew, can Kentucky hire Mark Stoops first 10 years? I would say yes. Go hiring two times in 10 years, he would have had us in contention for the playoff. How many straight bowls did we make? Seven. Something like that?
Ryan Lemond
Seven or eight?
Matt Jones
Yeah. I mean, I. Yes. I mean, you got to remember, if the playoff system existed then like it did now, twice, we would have had a game with a chance to go to the playoff. I think you would sign up for that. The problem is not we get Mark Stoops. We're talking about Mark Stoops today, not Mark stoops his first 10 years. Because I think Mark Stoops his first 10 years was objectively a successful coach at Kentucky.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Mullen didn't have a losing season in Starkville, which is kind of a similar job to what UK is now. Times have changed a little bit. I wouldn't mind if they hired him. I. I wonder about personality. With Mitch Barnhart and Mitch having two of Mullen's last ads in the SEC is kind of his co. His. From his ad tree.
Matt Jones
Like, no.
Drew Franklin
If he's going to have any research on a coach, he's going to know the most about Mullen. Maybe Mullen will pass that test. I don't know. But I just. Mitch will have the most info on Mullen because of his ad history.
Matt Jones
Who's next?
Shannon Dawson
Mike.
Matt Jones
Mike, you got about a minute? Go ahead.
Caller
Well, my question, if Stoops leaves, how much confidence do we have in Mitch to make this right? Higher. We don't want to be like little brother and have three different coaches on the payroll.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Great question. Appreciate that.
Caller
It has to be a great.
Matt Jones
Drew or Ryan. What do you think? Do you think Mitch is the. You have confidence in Mitch to make the right hire?
Ryan Lemond
I'd say his batting average is pretty good. He's had a couple swinging misses, but most, for the most part, I think his batting average is pretty high.
Matt Jones
I mean, let's look at his major hires. John Caliperi, great. Billy Gillespie, bad. Mark Pope, So far, so good. Joker Phillips, bad. Rich Brooks, good. Mark Stoops, good. Mingyone, good. Kenny Brooks, good. Matthew Mitchell, good. Kyre Elzy, not so good. Pretty good. Batting it is, right? Pretty. We'll be right back.
Drew Franklin
T.J. smith, personal injury attorney.
Ryan Lemond
Call T.J. he'll make him pay.
Shannon Dawson

And the next one comes October 30th. Wednesday Dollar Wings day. Today and tonight, try the new burgers as well. Tater kegs now become our 3rd biggest seller seller here behind the wings and burger.
Ryan Lemond
I gotta admit something to you.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
You bought an order of tater kegs during the pregame show Saturday.
Matt Jones
I did.
Ryan Lemond
I stole a couple of them.
Matt Jones
I thought they were disappearing.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, I stole at least two.
Matt Jones
You could have asked. I would have given you one.
Ryan Lemond
You know when you get up and do your manager things here. Yeah, I stole. I can admit it now.
Matt Jones
So when I was trying to keep the restaurant running efficient, you decided that was the time to steal my feature food.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, I know.
Drew Franklin
You didn't need it.
Ryan Lemond
You're up working, you're doing stuff.
Matt Jones
No, I did need it. But thank you very much for that. Two fan things. Vanderbilt apparent. You know they beat LSU on Saturday. They stormed the field, but they were not fined by the SEC because they did a controlled field storming. They waited for LSU to leave the stadium and then storm the field. Smart.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I think Vandy's done this before, too. This is the move. Safety first. Let the players get out of the way, then go have your celebration. What's it hurt to wait four or five more seconds to dodge Shannon?
Matt Jones
Is that a nerdy way to storm the field? We need to do this in an orderly way. Everyone wait your turn. And now let's storm the field.
Shannon Dawson
To me, it's not the same as just in the moment storming the field, but it's smart on their part. They don't get the fine and they still get the storm.
Matt Jones
They still got to storm the field. So you're good with it? Yeah. All right. Texas Tech apparently had a tradition that I did not know, which is that during the game, was it during the intro or after the game? At some point?
Drew Franklin
During. Not the. Not after the game. I don't think it's either beginning or during.
Matt Jones
I think during the game or beginning of the game, they throw tortillas onto the field. Y. I don't know how they got into this tradition. They just whip tortillas from the stands and throw them onto the field. Apparently they've been doing this for years. The Big 12 says now no more tortilla throwing. $100,000 fine. If this. If the fans throw tortillas again, fair or foul.
Ryan Lemond
I. I guess it started something about when an announcer said, there's nothing here in Lubbock but a tortilla tech and a tortilla factory. So the students started taking that and bringing tortillas to the game and throwing them at the.
Matt Jones
At the announcer. Only.
Drew Franklin
Only the game seems worth.
Matt Jones
Yeah, okay.
Ryan Lemond
I. I think let the kids do it, man. I mean, they're just tortillas. It's not like you're throwing rocks or cans of stuff.
Matt Jones
Cans of stuff?
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
That would be bad. Okay. You good with it?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
It's not gonna hurt. Throw your tortillas.
Matt Jones
But, I mean, you're. You gotta clean. Somebody's gotta clean it up. I mean, the birds will eat it on the field. Yeah, so just leave them all over the field.
Drew Franklin
I mean, the bleachers. The bleachers at a football game are already littered in many fireball bottles, poms and trash. Anyway, what's a few tortillas hurt off the field?
Matt Jones
Like, the game is going on and there are tortillas everywhere.
Ryan Lemond
That's a heck of an arm. You can slingshot a tortilla from your.
Matt Jones
It's like a frisbee.
Ryan Lemond
You can. I don't think I could throw one that far.
Matt Jones
So now you're just hitting people in the stands?
Ryan Lemond
Just throw them in the stand? Yeah, just throw them in the stands.
Shannon Dawson
Getting hurt with a flying tortilla.
Drew Franklin
All right, I'm team Tortilla.
Ryan Lemond
I have Team Tortilla.
Matt Jones
All right.
Ryan Lemond
What about you?
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, I. I don't know that we should just encourage. But whatever. I'm fine with it. I mean, it is a cool tradition, and I do. I didn't know that. That it was because somebody said they didn't have anything but tortillas.
Ryan Lemond
Do they do it just on when they play a certain opponent, or is it every home game?
Matt Jones
I'm not sure, but I do. Okay. You all talked me into it. If that's what an announcer said and it was a natural thing, then. Then I'm. I think I'm good.
Drew Franklin
If somebody said Lexington is nothing but a bunch of bums and hamburger buns and we started throwing hamburger buns.
Matt Jones
They'Re just def. Community. I like the story we found out about Seth McGowan going to the. We knew he went to the hospital, but apparently during the game, he had to go to the hospital because they were worried about his chest. I don't know. But so he worried about his chest. They take him out of the stadium on a golf cart. He rides past people on the way in his uniform, and they're like, hey, hope you're okay, Seth. He goes. He claims he had to rip the IVs out of his arm. That's not good. I hope he didn't do that. They don't recommend that. And then he rode. Now, this is the cool part. He got back on the cart and they drove him back through the tailgate lot into the stadium, and people were cheering him coming back in. If we had won, that would have been one of the cooler things that's ever happened, right?
Drew Franklin
Yes. And I had doubts about this, to be honest, when the broadcast said it, because he wasn't gone very long when he came back in. And I thought, I know the hospitals right there. But there's no way he actually did this. But here in the story makes it so much better and confirms it. When he got to the hospital, he borrowed someone's phone to watch the game. While they were checking him out, the.
Matt Jones
Article said, like, as he was going through its words started, because, you know, if you've never been to a game, there are people out there watching the game outside on their televisions. Like, word started traveling that he was coming and, like, kids were running with the golf carts. And I mean, that's kind of like a Willis Reed moment, you know, I.
Ryan Lemond
Totally love that part of the story that he was getting applause, that he was driving back to the stadium. And if he could have somehow found a way to punch in that game winning touchdown, he'd be a hero here forever.
Matt Jones
I agree. So I kind of feel bad. It's like one of those, what a moment. It would have been like James Young's dunk against UConn in 2011. Like, we lost. So that dunk or Patrick Sparks shot that bounces on the rim. There are these moments that if we had just won the game. Yep, Seth McGowan would have been one of those.
Drew Franklin
It'd be a very cool story. I wish we had video of the people in the hospital. You know, you're in there, you cut your finger making chili, watching football, and then suddenly Seth McGowan, full pads, walks in and cuts the line in front of you. That had to be pretty surreal for everyone around.
Matt Jones
My question is, did he have to wait like I had to? When I go to the emergency room, sir, it'll be two hours. We don't have a bed, these forms.
Ryan Lemond
That's a great point. Most time you go to your.
Matt Jones
Wait, what's your insurance?
Ryan Lemond
He was back so fast.
Drew Franklin
What they do medical history?
Ryan Lemond
Just check me out, check my chest and let me get back to the game.
Matt Jones
Is your address changed, sir?
Shannon Dawson
Jacob.
Matt Jones
Jacob. Go ahead, Jacob.
Caller
Hi. Good morning, guys. I just wanted my question with kind of all the issues with college football now with Penn State firing their coach, Florida, and who knows, maybe Florida State at the end of the season, do you think that affects Kentucky's decision at all with Mike Stoops?
Matt Jones
I would argue, and I've said this for the last few days, I appreciate the call. What these other schools being open, even if there's a lot should not change. You either want to make a change or you don't. And if you want to make a change, you make it. I think, you know, the reality is you don't know how many jobs are going to be open next year. Drew. There might be more jobs open next year. You don't know. I think you got to go.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. I mean, even though we're not stupid.
Matt Jones
Decide you're going to do it.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, we're not stupid. We know there are better jobs than Kentucky that are open, but it's a loser mentality to be like, oh, no, we can't do it now because this is out there.
Matt Jones
You.
Drew Franklin
If you have a problem, you fix it and don't sweat the other opportunities out there that you're going up against.
Matt Jones
And I think it assumes, Ryan, that there are only a few coaches that can do this. This the code. There is a coach out there. In the grand scheme of college football. There is a coach for Kentucky. There is someone out there who can win here and win at a big level. Your job is to find them.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And I don't think there's just one. I think there are multiple people who can win. Right. So the question is, can you find that person? And so I think that it might not be your first choice, but, like, it might be somebody none of us have ever heard of. I mean, let's use Mark Pope as an example. I thought Mark Pope was like the 9th choice or 10th choice for me, and it's worked. And I think some of those people, we didn't get, you know, I think they would have worked, too. I think there's multiple people that you can make work.
Ryan Lemond
And on the football side, Rich Brooks was probably the 5th, 6th, 7th choice. He won here. Mark Stoops was the 5th, 6th, seventh choice. He won here.
Matt Jones
I Will say, if you go back to when they hired Mark Stoops and you go look at the list of guys Mitch talked to, they all ended up having success. He did a pretty good job compiling that list. I mean, Sonny Dykes was on that list.
Drew Franklin
Wasn't Lincoln Riley.
Matt Jones
Lincoln Riley was on that list. I mean, he had a. His list of guys. Drew ended up being a pretty good list.
Drew Franklin
And I think now more than ever people might want the Kentucky job. I know some people say the opposite, but if you're a coach and you pull up the top 25 poll right now, there are logos we haven't seen in that poll ever. And you're, as we've said many times as fans, they're thinking, Woof, Indiana, Vandy, BYU, Georgia Tech are top 15. Give me Kentucky's job with that money and I can do it too.
Matt Jones
Exactly right. Who's next? Shannon?
Shannon Dawson
Robbie.
Matt Jones
Robbie. Go ahead, Robbie.
Caller
Good morning, guys. Congratulations on 20 years, but thank you. Two questions. First one is if we were talking the other day about students being fired and the guy was saying that if we fire Stoops, we also have to pay the buyout of the assistant coaches.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I think there's only one or two. I think there's only like two coaches that have an assistant coach buyout. It's probably the two courts actually. I think Bush's is over this year. So my Brad White might be the only major, but there might be small buyouts for those other guys. But I think Brad White's probably the only one of any significance. And it's probably half million dollars or something. Not something that would change the overall accounting.
Caller
Okay, and then my second question was, so since Jeff Brahms names being mentioned kind of for Florida, do you think that Vince would follow him to Florida or do you think he would try to find his way back to where he belongs?
Matt Jones
You know, it's a great question. I mean, I certainly could see a world Vince as a coach here again, I don't think it's going to be immediate. Appreciate the call. It won't be while Jeff's at Louisville. But if Jeff were to leave Louisville. Yeah, but I don't. Why would Jeff leave Louisville? I mean, they're going to pay him as much as he can make anywhere else. Don't you think he went there? He grew up there.
Drew Franklin
I'm actually surprised that his name is high as it is at Florida even just from how good he is. I mean, he's been good at Louisville, but I'm in my brain. I don't have him as Florida should be after him. But, I mean, it's just gambling odds and message boards. But his name is everywhere for that job. I mean, that's surprising to me.
Matt Jones
It is. It's a little surprising to me that Jeff is.
Drew Franklin
I mean, and he's a Louisville guy.
Matt Jones
You know, I'm surprised they're really won anything yet. I mean, they beat. Okay, so they beat Miami. But I don't know. I'm not saying he's not a great coach. I think he is. I just. It is weird to me that Florida, you know, shouldn't he. Shouldn't he, like, win 10 games first?
Drew Franklin
Yeah. If. If he were to go to Florida. I do. On the Vince thing, I would think Vince would follow him to Florida if it were to happen.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
He's not gonna stay at Louisville.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Coming back here right away. So if it were to happen this offseason, I would think he would.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemond
Well.
Matt Jones
All right, we'll take a break. 859-280-2287. I've got to tell you, we've talked about traffic on this show. Potentially the biggest traffic problem in Kentucky history outside of the. After the eclipse is coming next summer. Oh, no. Would you like. Do you know what it is?
Ryan Lemond
No, I don't.
Matt Jones
I'll tell you right after this. Okay. Sorry. Is this James Taylor?
Shannon Dawson
It is.
Matt Jones
Wow. What is this song?
Shannon Dawson
I played it over the years on this show.
Matt Jones
All right. Cornbread hips. Helping folks settle in the season. Little extra feel good. You can. If you buy 75 worth of stuff, they'll throw in full spectrum CBD gummies with your order. $125. They'll give you a tote bag. That's right. Cornbread Hemp dot com. Go to Cornbread Hemp. Use my code KSR for 20% off at checkout. Cornbread Hemp dot com. You all have a good afternoon, ma'. Am. Thank you for stopping. Stopping by. Let's. Let's see. What do I want to do right here? Oh, traffic. Okay.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. You ready? Tell me what's going on.
Matt Jones
June 1st to September 1st in Louisville. Did you know they are shutting down I65 from the bridge down to down to the water or past the water.
Drew Franklin
Oh, that sounds like a nightmare.
Matt Jones
Shutting it down because for repairs.
Shannon Dawson
Be terrible for me.
Matt Jones
It's going to be. Yes. It'll be really terrible for you, Shannon. I thought about that.
Shannon Dawson
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Basically, they're going to reroute traffic that you. The traffic, I think is going to have to go all the way around. Either the Waterson or the Gene Snider, I guess. And then the people in town, basically, if you're on I65 between the bridge and. And the Waterson, probably the bridge even in the Gene Snyder Shannon, it's just closed all summer.
Shannon Dawson
So I should just basically buy a bed and keep it here at the radio station. Because going.
Matt Jones
Is that how you go? Is that how you go?
Shannon Dawson
I go Gene Snyder to 65 north, which means I have to pass the Waterson is.
Drew Franklin
Oh, you're.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it's gonna be awful for you. Yeah, I'm sorry. Yeah, that's gonna be really terrible.
Shannon Dawson
Thanks for this great news.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it's all summer because they're repairing three bridges and they basically determined they cannot do it if cars are passing, so they're just closing it.
Ryan Lemond
Unbelievable. That's gonna be a nightmare.
Matt Jones
And remember, that's one of the big thoroughfares in America. I mean, I65 going north, that's basically the way you get from Chicago to Nashville. You have to go through there.
Ryan Lemond
Wow.
Drew Franklin
What is even the detour like?
Matt Jones
I think the detour is stay home. Just.
Shannon Dawson
You might as go on Bardstown Road all the way from Mount Washington.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I don't know what the detour is. I. I guess the detour has to be. Detour has to be the water center, the G. And it can't be the Gene Snyder. That's too long. I guess it has to be the Waterson.
Drew Franklin
Shannon, you should look into downtown condos.
Shannon Dawson
That's what I'm hearing right now.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, I would. I would assume it's the Waterson, but then the Waterson is already so crowded. Like you. If you. If you. Good night.
Ryan Lemond
Wow.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it's gonna be awful.
Ryan Lemond
And they're doing three bridges all at.
Matt Jones
The same time over the course of summer. So June 1st to September 1st. So get ready for traffic Armageddon.
Drew Franklin
And it'll surely be done on September 1st, too.
Matt Jones
Now, I didn't know this. I didn't know this, so I had it wrong. There are the assistant buyouts are a little more than we. We think for apparently 4.7 million. But that can be spaced out over years, so it's not as big a deal. But how about this? No buyout for Brad White. His contract actually ends this year. What if I told you Bush Hampden's buyout is 1.4 million.
Ryan Lemond
Wow.
Drew Franklin
Can that be paid over? Never.
Ryan Lemond
Are these contracts like, do they like, expired June 30 and renewed July 1. All like one? Another year, another year. Wow.
Matt Jones
So does that make you excited?
Drew Franklin
All right, let's go.
Ryan Lemond
Let's go.
Drew Franklin
Score less than three touchdowns for the 15th straight time.
Matt Jones
Fired up, ready to go.
Ryan Lemond
Bring on Tennessee.
Matt Jones
Who's up next?
Shannon Dawson
Adam.
Matt Jones
Adam. Go ahead, Adam.
Caller
Hey, what's up, guys? Congratulations on your website anniversary. I'm one of the Boone's Butcher Shop Day guys, so appreciate all that you've. You've done and brought a lot of entertainment through the website and the radio show.
Matt Jones
That's no problem.
Caller
As far as, you know, Louisville signing a G League player. How pissed do you think Ennis Cantor is right now?
Matt Jones
Oh, no, kid. I mean, he would have been. And by the way, I meant to say thank you. Not no problem. I don't know why I said that. No problem. Thank you very much for those words. In his cancer, would have been able to play probably five years later. I mean, he was at the worst time, and now it wouldn't even be an issue. And that team. I appreciate the call. We wouldn't have gotten as much fun as we had with George, but that would have been a national championship team. If Ennis Cantor had been on the team, George would have been the backup, but in his Cantor with Brandon Knight would have been. You could have won the whole thing.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. When Ennis didn't get cleared at the time, that was a big hole on the roster. Now George stepped up. But imagine having Ennis and Jorts. I mean, what, it was like the third pick in the draft or something crazy, wasn't he?
Matt Jones
Yeah, something like that. All right, DraftKings, we got to make a pick. I'm gonna pick a random pick. College football game tonight. You ready?
Ryan Lemond
Let's do it. We want it. With our Reed shepherd pick last night, we did.
Matt Jones
He hit the two threes in the second quarter.
Ryan Lemond
Bank that one in. I was, like, celebrating jumping nine o'.
Matt Jones
Clock. On CBS sportsnet tonight, the Draft Kings pick of the day. Use the code ksr. Shannon. Missouri State, New Mexico State. It's a pick, Em. It's a pick, em.
Shannon Dawson
Well, I think New Mexico State's got the clear advantage here. They do not. They do not lose at home.
Matt Jones
Las Cruces, stand up. You're picking New Mexico State. What do you got?
Drew Franklin
I just wonder what was clear about it, though. He sounded so confident.
Shannon Dawson
Kind of running out of time, Drew.
Matt Jones
Oh, good. I'm gonna go with him.
Drew Franklin
I trust his opinion. New Mexico State, they're the home team.
Matt Jones
Yes. Well, if Shannon says it's clear. I mean, if Shannon says it's clear, I can't go Against Shannon. If it's clear we all heard that.
Drew Franklin
Confidence in his voice.
Ryan Lemond
Missouri State offensive coordinator is Nick Petrino. They've got their head coach. As a former Western Kentucky Hilltopper, they've got like anything, four or five connections on coaches. Missouri State Tigers.
Matt Jones
No, Shannon, I'm rolling with you.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, they're the Bears.
Ryan Lemond
I'm rolling with the Bears.
Matt Jones
I'm going to put. Did you say Tigers?
Ryan Lemond
Tigers.
Matt Jones
So you thought Missouri State had the same nickname as Missouri? Just coincidentally, just, you know, you named.
Drew Franklin
The whole coaching staff and then got the mess.
Matt Jones
What town is Missouri State in?
Ryan Lemond
Springfield.
Matt Jones
Is that true?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, I think so.
Matt Jones
Or did you just say it? Confident.
Shannon Dawson
Springfield, New Mexico stays undefeated at home this year. So.
Matt Jones
Undefeated at home, it's hard to get to Las Cruces.
Ryan Lemond
But you don't want to count out Nick Petrino as your offensive coordinator. Missouri State.
Matt Jones
All right, Shannon, I'm rolling with you.
Shannon Dawson
Yeah, we've already counted them out.
Matt Jones
I got $50 in DraftKings right now on, on New Mexico. That's how much I. That's how much I believe in you. And if you're wrong, then that'll be a whole different situation. Two days away from the number one team in America coming in here to Rupp Arena.
Drew Franklin
They're going down very excited and we're.
Ryan Lemond
Doing a pre game show for it. I can't wait.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it should be a lot of fun. Thank you all very much for listening. Come on out to the bar tonight, have food and we will be back here tomorrow. This has been Kentucky Sports Radio.
