This is Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome, everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Friday, December 31st. I'm Matt Jones here live at Whiskey Thief just outside of Frankfurt with a packed house at the Whiskey Thief distilling company, Kentucky's first distillery to offer visitors a unique straight to the barrel. Straight from the barrel. Uncut and unfiltered tasting and thieving experience. We are here. It's a little bit cold, but that's okay because we got a packed house for a big Kentucky sports weekend. You can give a shout at Clark's pump and shop, phone line 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254. And this is sponsored by the TJ Smith office. You call TJ will make them pay. It is a packed house, and it is a. There's a lot of stuff going on. Kentucky played a poor basketball game last night. They have a worrisome football game tomorrow. And it's also Halloween, and we have folks dressed up, including the people up here. We'll start with the guy next to me, Ryan Lemon. I'm dressed as Ellie De la Cruz, but I need help, Shannon. I have. I need accoutrements.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I woke up this morning and realized I need gold chains.
Shannon
You need that.
Matt Jones
So if anybody has gold chains or I black, I. I would like to borrow it. I was not able to get it last night.
Shannon
Maybe a baseball glove, maybe a bat, maybe just a baseball.
Matt Jones
But I have a hat in a jersey. That's a good start. But I would love the gold chains and the Eye black. I think I could do it.
Shannon
The accessories matter.
Matt Jones
The accessories matter. And. And someone was supposed to bring them to me, and then they texted me this morning said, I can't get up and do it.
Shannon
That's okay.
Matt Jones
All right. You are a referee. I am.
Shannon
If anybody gets out of hand here, I know a lot of people are probably going to be drinking here at Whiskey Thief. If anybody needs to be thrown out of here, I can do it. I'm the guy.
Matt Jones
Drew is a draft king.
Ryan Lemond
I'm the draft.
Drew Franklin
Yes, the crown is yours, but the winner.
Matt Jones
The win. Winner of the contest is. Look at Mike Ditka here. Everybody give him a round of applause. Ryan, that is a top level costume. You literally have not gone out of character. You've got the mustache. I would argue the slick back hair look is a good one for you.
Ryan Lemond
It's coach Ditka to you, Ellie. Don't forget that. This is Bill Mack sweater. Bill Mack. I've seen him go, Bill Max. Mike Ditka sweater. So shout out to chief meteorologist Bill Mack.
Matt Jones
Well, you look great and feel great.
Ryan Lemond
Feel great, Ellie.
Shannon
So Ryan was just hanging out during the pre show back here, and I legitimately did not know that that was actually Ryan until he turned around and.
Matt Jones
I saw somebody here wonder if it was him. Yeah, Shannon was the only one.
Shannon
Well, Billy didn't know. He's like, is that Ryan? And then he turned around. We saw the back of his head. Okay. Yeah, that's Ryan.
Matt Jones
So while I do think Ryan wins the people on the show costume contest, I got to give the winner of everybody here to these two women dressed as nerds.
Ryan Lemond
Gummy clusters pandering right there.
Shannon
That is pand to you, Matt. They know your favorite candy.
Matt Jones
Maybe it is pandering, but like our current president, I can be bought. And so I'm glad to. I. I'm glad to do it because those are excellent costumes, Drew. You got to give those ladies.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Leave aside just the nerd connection. That's just a great, creative costume.
Matt Jones
It really is. They've got the.
Drew Franklin
The little clusters in their hair. They got the actual logo. That's not a question. They're the winner today.
Ryan Lemond
Can I ask you a question?
Matt Jones
Yes.
Ryan Lemond
Is Mario Brony.
Matt Jones
Mario is Bronnie. He is dressed as Bronnie James. That's why he's sitting down on the bench right now. It's because he is.
Shannon
That's a great singer, but I like it.
Matt Jones
He's dressed as Bronnie tonight. By the way, if you are in Lexington, Mario and I are doing a rare. I'm doing a rare Getting out in Public tonight. Mario and I are going to be looking for the top 10 costumes in Lexington tonight. We're gonna do man on the street interviews and find the top 10 costumes in Lexington tonight. I'm open for suggestions as to where. Besides, like, bars, where are people tonight? Like, where are the Halloween things? Because Mario and I are going to be out on the street tonight.
Shannon
Well, I'm sure there's gonna be plenty of neighborhoods. You could just wander around.
Matt Jones
I'm not gonna wander around people's neighborhoods.
Shannon
You could go trick or treating, you know, and find some adults.
Matt Jones
Yeah, maybe that's what we'll do. Maybe we'll look. But it would be weird, though, for us just to roam around people's neighborhoods.
Drew Franklin
But nevertheless, there's ever a night to do it. I'd say this is the one you can get away with.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So Mario and I are going to do that tonight. I would say you would be a contender in your outfit.
Ryan Lemond
Appreciate that. But tonight for trick or treating, I will take off my Ditka costume and put on my scary demon costume to scare the living daylights out of the kids when they come to get their candy from me.
Matt Jones
Why do you want to dress as a demon?
Ryan Lemond
I get a big kick out of it. I like to see him run off screaming and crying.
Matt Jones
That's really.
Drew Franklin
What age are we talking about?
Matt Jones
Yeah, 27.
Ryan Lemond
Anywhere from a newborn to about 30. Newborn.
Shannon
Come on, now. Good grief.
Matt Jones
Good luck. Good luck scaring the children tonight. Well, I was scared last night by the Kentucky basketball performance. I hate to start with this, but I think we have to. Cats play at home against Georgetown continues the streak of. We've never beaten Georgetown in a regular game or an exhibition game. Now, Owen, three over the years, lost in 1920, lost in 1984, and now lose this year. It was a bad game from start to finish, Drew. I mean, Kentucky was down, I think, like, I think they went down 12, 11, and then never caught up again. The Georgetown dominated on both ends of the floor. I thought Kentucky was completely out physical. They were not able to play offensively. They were never really been able to get into their offense. Shot the ball very poorly, turned it over a lot, and then just on the defensive end, especially in the first half. Easy shots for Georgetown. Physical, taking it to the basket. I said on the postgame show, it remind me of the Ohio State game last year in Madison Square Garden where you got a kind of introduction to. Oh, okay, this is what it's like to play against men and you're going to have to be ready for it. What did you think of it?
Drew Franklin
Very disappointed. Like everyone else. You know, you have cold night shooting. But also they threw in last night. We're not going to guard either. They couldn't shoot or defend the moment. We were a couple minutes into the game and I was just seeing that Georgetown's two guards, both are all conference. They were doing whatever they wanted. Just never had a good feeling. I never really thought we were going to hit another gear because it was just looking too easy for Georgetown and Kentucky was just throwing up brick after brick the whole game. At one point they were 10 for 20 from the free throw line. Kentucky?
Matt Jones
Yeah, the free throw line. I mean we had guys who should be 85% shooters up there missing free throws. I mean Cam Williams is over two. Noah missed a free throw, Chandler missed a free throw away. Missed free throws. Like you're like, come on guy. I mean if he. It's one thing if our bigs missed free throws, but you guys, the guards, right? I mean I look, it's an exhibition game. I'm not going to overreact. It doesn't really change a lot of how I see about the team, especially with Low and Aberdeen out. But it was very disappointing.
Ryan Lemond
You're right. With Low and Aberdeen out, their guards were just better than our guards. And we saw without a true solid strong point guard out there, offense just seemed out of sync. You mentioned the nut couldn't hit free throws. Couldn't hit a three pointer in the.
Matt Jones
Second half for 13, by the way. Exactly like 1984. Couldn't hit a shot in the second half. They went three for 33 last in 1984. They went over 10 or 13 from three in this one.
Ryan Lemond
So even, you know, Travis Ford said something like this during the broadcast. These are the type of teams they're going to see in the sec.
Matt Jones
He's exactly right.
Ryan Lemond
So is that any alarm bells go off?
Matt Jones
Mark Pope said. Mark Pope said after the game basically what what I said. He said Ohio State did that to us last year and then we learned how to play against those kind of teams and by the end of the year we were good against them. And so I think Shannon, that's what you hope. He said this is hard for us to replicate in practice because we don't have guys like this, he said. But we will be able. And you know, maybe there's an argument it's good to get this out of the way here than take a regular season Loss in a similar game.
Shannon
Absolutely. I know the shooting was bad last night, but I think that this is a really good team, a really good shooting team. So I think that those things will work themselves out as we go throughout the season. Well, I hope it is, but if.
Matt Jones
I were to range, I mean, are we certain it's a good shooting team?
Shannon
From everything we've heard, yeah.
Matt Jones
But I haven't seen it yet. I mean, I, you know, when I looked at the roster, they built. My worry. Drew was shooting. That was my worry. And then we've. I've seen them in practice make a lot of threes, but we've now seen them three times in game competition and they really haven't shot the ball in any of them. And there is a part of me that worries that this Mark Pope's offense requires you to make open threes. And, and can we.
Drew Franklin
I'm a little worried and I think we need to have a difficult conversation. I'll be the one to say it.
Matt Jones
Go ahead. Maybe I should have to say it's you, you. It's your fault.
Drew Franklin
I think we need to calm down on the Trent Noah can't miss conversations. I've participated in it.
Matt Jones
I did too.
Drew Franklin
Well, we'll get to that one too. But last summer, remember, Travis Perry hit 100 in a row. And it wasn't just media. The players were saying it, Pope was saying it. This kid can't miss. And then he didn't really shoot well in the regular season. I'm worried we're doing that to Trent Noah because all summer, player interviews, us, Pope, Trent, Noah, Trent Noah. Trent Noah cannot miss. And I'm worried we're doing what we did to Perry last year. I don't know if it's putting too much pressure on him or they're hyping him up too much, but he hasn't been knocking it down.
Matt Jones
When you watch, when you watch him in, in practice action, he does not miss. But there's a difference between making it impress. Josh Carrier would tell you there's a difference between making it in practice and making it in games. Ryan, you cannot beat good teams. If we're going to play these guys a lot of minutes. If Trent. No, I want you to think about this stat. Trent Noah, Colin Chandler and Cam Williams. In theory, those should be your three best three point shooters. And they went 2 of 15 last night and most of them were open. So if you go 2 of 15 with open threes with those guys, that's going to be tough.
Ryan Lemond
So, you know, we overreacted after the win over Purdue. Do we overreact after the way we shot the ball and lost to Georgetown? I think as a fan base we probably do because I think it's a legit concern about the shooting, the shoot.
Matt Jones
Okay, so some of this stuff that went wrong yesterday, Shannon, I'm not worried about. Yeah, okay. Colin Chandler is not, is not at this point in his career a point guard. We saw that last year. I think Drew and I had hoped it changed. I don't think that's changed. I think he's got to play the two or the three. I think when you get low in Aberdeen, some of that stuff's going to take care of itself. So like I don't think we're going to have as many turnovers when Low and Aberdeen are playing. I don't think we're going to have. We could not guard the ball. Like we could not guard the ball. Part of that was Colin Chandler, you know, Trent, Noah, even Jasper, they could not guard the ball. Aberdeen's gonna be able to guard the ball away. I was shocked how bad Olay played. I thought that was maybe the worst game I've seen away play at Kentucky. He'll be better, right?
Shannon
Still led the team in scoring though. He did what I was driving at. Go ahead though, you know, saying I wasn't that worried about the offenses. I'm more concerned what I saw last night about the defense and the lack of physicality because in the SEC if you're not physical with these teams, you're just going to get beaten up night in and night out. So they've got to have some toughness.
Matt Jones
They do. It looked to me. Ryan, I can't believe I'm saying this because I hate when fans say this after games. If you've listened to me over the years, I usually go, I don't think that's a fair criticism. But I'll admit even I was thinking it just didn't look like they wanted to be out there last night. Like it just. They just didn't. They didn't have the energy. They just did. It just. It felt like Georgetown was much more into that game than we were, which I don't think is an. You can't do that.
Ryan Lemond
They did seem just out of sync, out of sorts. Maybe that was because the change at point guard and. But especially on the offensive end, they just didn't seem to have any fine tuned execution at all that we thought we'd see.
Matt Jones
It was one of the most listless performances that I can remember and Even though we won, I kind of feel like Matt Painter after the game. It could have been worse. Georgetown. Georgetown shot badly in the second half. Now, they played well in the first half, but they shot pretty badly. It could have been worse.
Drew Franklin
Could have gotten a lot worse. Kentucky had a little mini run that got the crowd kind of into it. I think they cut it to 10, which is embarrassing to say in Rupp Arena. Also not the crowd's best effort. I didn't expect it would be Purdue because Purdue was insane. If you were there, that was crazy to be an exhibition game, but I thought it would be better than last night, was that upper end zone was just completely empty lots, empty rows throughout the stadium. So just across the board. It wasn't everyone's best effort.
Matt Jones
So do we think it matters long term? I mean, we play Tuesday night against Nichols, and then we got Valpo Friday. They're both bad, so, you know. But then you got Louisville a week from Tuesday. Do. Do you. Do you think this is just a blip on the radar or is this something that worries you?
Shannon
It doesn't worry me at all. I love that we're playing these games, though, in the preseason. Me too, because we're still 0 and 0, but we find out a lot more about the team playing these type of teams than an athletes in action Morehouse. Remember when we played those, we beat about 70.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon
Was that. Was that.
Matt Jones
No, no, actually, you're right. Yeah.
Shannon
Yeah. So I like that they're playing. You have to learn about your team early in the season, as you wouldn't, you know, with the other schedule.
Ryan Lemond
Pope said it, you know, on these postgame press conference. You know, I love this result. Now we have some tape to show our guys.
Matt Jones
I didn't love. I didn't love. I mean, I will say this. I didn't love the result.
Ryan Lemond
I didn't either.
Caller or Guest
No.
Drew Franklin
And it was very disappointing. I mean, they look bad. There's no way to sugarcoat it. But you also have to remind yourselves that's not the team we're going to watch all year. I mean, the moment Lowe's back and Aberdeen are back, we're not going to just have to watch Colin Chandler get taken off the dribble all night because that's not his job. Everybody was taking on a role. That's not going to be their role when it really matters.
Matt Jones
We did get some good news. Low and Aberdeen will both be able to. He. Pope says they're both close and then he hopes to play them next week. I've kind of gotten the sense we might see one of them, might not. I don't know that they'll both be playing Tuesday. I think the goal is to have them both play Friday so that you can have one full game before Louisville. Right. And I think that's. That's the goal. We'll see if they're able to do it.
Ryan Lemond
And that's why I'm not going to rush the judgment until we get those guys back. It's obviously last night with no, I hate to slam Colin Chandler, but he just played bad last. He had a bad.
Matt Jones
He was. I mean, we can't win with him. He was awful. And he. And it looked to be in his head. I mean, you could see it on his face. For those of you who watched it at home, I mean, you could see it on his face. Five turnovers for some bad shots. Five turnovers. One of six from three could not guard. Like that was a bad Colin Chandler game. Your stock went way.
Drew Franklin
No, no, stock's good. But we are running a special on the Colin Chandler fan club. If you want to get another three month trial. Good opportunity to get in referral codes. We have the whole thing. Check us out.
Matt Jones
All right. We are here at Whiskey Thief. The tasting room opened in New Loo in October 20, 2024. And here is a hundred and twenty seven acre farm and we always have one of our best remotes. They are literally taking bourbon directly out of the barrel. And like, are you.
Drew Franklin
That's the thief she's holding.
Shannon
That's right.
Matt Jones
That's the thief. Now are you. You're putting in cups. You don't just shoot it directly in their mouth, do you?
Shannon
You could if you wanted to.
Matt Jones
You could. But. But they're not doing that. They got little cups and are there any more cups to give away or are they already all gone? They're gone. All right. Well, thanks to the folks who got here earlier, they got their shot glasses. We'll take a break and be right back. It's KSR here at Whiskey Thief, Kentucky sports radio.
Downy Rinse Advertiser
Every now and then I rinse it out and I need Johnny rinse tonight and I need it more. My kid wears a bed and the smell never leaves. I don't know what to do. I'm always in the dark. The sweat and dead short smells like a dark. I'm downy rinsing tonight.
Matt Jones
Downy rinse fights stubborn odors in just one wash when impossible odors get stuck in it out.
Caller or Guest
Welcome back.
Matt Jones
It is Kentucky sports radio here live at Whiskey Thief.
Ryan Lemond
I handed out some bourbon. Got a little distracted there.
Matt Jones
Yeah, bourbon comes. Everybody gets a little worked up at the farm. Here at Whiskey Thief, they have live music on weekends. They have food trucks, they got jazz nights. And it is Halloween. I got a message, a text here that says, don't let Ryan act all tough. He does not scare all children. He's very nice to toddlers and medically fragile children. That's very nice. That would be mean if you were not. So he does have some limits. Although he will schedule other. Scare other children.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah. Yoga girl kind of gets behind me, and she'll hear a whisper. He goes, there's somebody coming up with an oxygen tank.
Matt Jones
Yeah. It says, two years ago, he almost scared a kid on oxygen riding in a wagon. And now I have to make sure. Did you really do that?
Ryan Lemond
I did. I. You know, because I'm there in my demon costume. I can't see who's coming up.
Matt Jones
I can't see a kid in a wagon.
Ryan Lemond
And then, like, down to the right in front of me, and then I really let him have it.
Shannon
A torture place to go to.
Matt Jones
Why would anyone want to go to your house? That sounds awful.
Ryan Lemond
My neighbor brought his little boy over, and I had him in tears, I felt so bad. It's my neighbor.
Matt Jones
But, I mean, you're. You're saying all this with glee.
Ryan Lemond
I love it, actually.
Shannon
There's signs of a psychopath.
Drew Franklin
Their therapist probably loves him and have.
Shannon
To see him for the next.
Ryan Lemond
I want those kids to go remember, hey, remember that bald old man used to scare us at Halloween?
Matt Jones
Why do you want them to remember that? That sounds like an awful memory.
Ryan Lemond
That's a great memory.
Matt Jones
All right.
Drew Franklin
Shouldn't they want to remember the candy and the fun they had with their friends?
Ryan Lemond
Family getting so scared you pee your pants.
Matt Jones
Okay, well, see, everybody always acts like he's the nice guy of the group. Could you hear any of the rest of us ever saying that? That's something that only Ryan. Lman. 859-280-2287 text machine. 772-774-5254. So, bottom line, fan base. Fan base was overreacting online last night. Not too bad of an overreaction on the postgame show. Relatively calm, but online, it went crazy. Does. Does your overall outlook on the season change at all? Shannon already said no. What about you?
Drew Franklin
No, I have some, like, individual concerns. Like, I don't know that Cam, like, Cam Williams light bulb is going to go off when we need it to. He just. He's hesitating a lot he turned down good threes to take bad threes yesterday. So there's like little individual things that I wish looked better. But the big picture, we, as I said, that's not the team we're going to be watching this year. Hopefully if you have injured guards all year, that's another issue. But once Low and Aberdeen back, that should help with the not being able to stop the ball that they had issues with last night.
Matt Jones
I'm legitimately worried about Cam Williams. I mean I, I think that guy, I haven't seen anything yet from him. I mean we practice, we saw the family practice, he looked a little better. But I, I'm starting to put him, you know, there's got to be two guys that don't play when everybody gets healthy. I'm starting to put him in that, that group because you know, he's a three and D guy that's not making threes or playing defense. So that's. I, he'd be the person that I would say is the most troublesome to.
Ryan Lemond
Me and it's the, probably the biggest head to head scratcher. We said we heard this summer the TBT guy said he's the best shooter. When we saw family practice, he was the best shooter. And then the games situation we've got right now, he's just kind of a non factor out there.
Drew Franklin
He looks like the, I don't say the moment's too big for him, but of all the people that hasn't adjusted yet. I mean he still looked kind of wide eyed when he got the ball last night. Like oh my, I'm in rep arena right now. I see a little bit of that. That's why one, he had an open shot pump faked into a contested shot. There's just a lot of things where if he were comfortable, he would have taken that right away.
Matt Jones
I think there's also, you got to remember, I mean, I don't know how to exactly put it, but the whole city kind of felt depressing yesterday. Like I don't know what it was even starting. You were there in the morning. Like it was just, it was rainy, it was cold. Pre game show we had a lot of people in the bar, but it just didn't feel like people were energetic and it was rainy and it was cold and then you get to the game and it just, it just felt. And I just felt like the whole city, team included, just was not awake yesterday.
Ryan Lemond
I'm the, I'm just going to, we got to just hold off judgment till we get our full roster back now, if we get those guys back and we're still struggling hitting the three and we're still struggling on offense, then maybe we can raise some concerns. But right now, I'm still just. We got to hold off judgment a little bit.
Matt Jones
All right, let's talk about something much more positive. We play a football game tomorrow.
Shannon
I was about to say, if you're depressed yesterday, wait till tomorrow.
Matt Jones
Yeah, we've. So we play Auburn in the probably the loser leaves town football game.
Ryan Lemond
Yep.
Matt Jones
Mark Stoops and Hugh Freeze, the loser of this game is. Is not going to be the coach next year. The winner may not be either, but the loser is definitely not going to be. And if in Auburn's case, if they lose, he won't be the coach on Monday. I don't think that's true of Stoops, but that's just the case. If we go into Auburn and win, Hugh Freeze might as well go ahead and hire the moving company because it is not. He ain't. He ain't making it home. If we. But let's talk about us if we lose. I'm of the opinion that if we lose Saturday, the decision is basically made at that point. They won't announce it's made. It won't be. But like, there will be meetings that start Sunday or Monday that will begin the process of how do we let this thing end. And that's a very complicated question. They're going to need a few weeks probably to figure that out, to be honest with you, which is why it's a good thing to start. But I think that probably starts happening if we lose on Saturday. Do. Do any of you think we're going to win tomorrow?
Shannon
I actually kind of do, because you do. Mark Stoops, historically at Kentucky as well, has always found a way when his back's against the wall to pull out a win. He's done that a few times.
Matt Jones
Get one of these a year for sure.
Shannon
Like the Louisville win at the, you know, the last game of the year. Just enough to get us hanging on for the next season. So I feel like he is going to win tomorrow and then we're going to have to kind of change what we.
Matt Jones
What do you think? You think. You think we get this one?
Drew Franklin
I'm glad Shannon said it first. I also, I don't know.
Matt Jones
People think.
Drew Franklin
I don't know about when my prediction will not be a win, but I'm betting the 10 and a half and I think they're going to be in it until the very end. I can see all of Auburn's games have been low scoring. They just got their first win last week. Barely beat a win last week.
Shannon
Yeah. Other than that, it's been low and.
Drew Franklin
You know, bowling, the offensive turned a corner even though they're not winning. And Auburn's defense hasn't done well against the past. So I actually think this is going to be a.
Matt Jones
Let's do a. Let's do a crowd vote. How many of you think we're winning tomorrow? Raise your hand. All right. 15%, something like that. That's better than. It's better than the amount of people when I did the thing said, how many people do you. How many want Stoops to stay? So that's good. Yeah. Do you think we're winning?
Ryan Lemond
You know, before Auburn made this quarterback change, they kind of played the way Stoops likes to play. And that's why I thought, man, they got a fighter puncher chance at this game. Now Albert's made the quarterback change and they had a. I wonder if, though.
Matt Jones
He'S just like, I may get fired. Let's just go at it. At which point that's bad for us. We'll take a break. Be right back. It's Kentucky Sports Radio. T.J. smith, personal injury attorney. Call T.J. he'll make him pay.
Shannon
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones. Welcome back.
Matt Jones
It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live in at Whiskey Thief. It is a cold day, but a nice day here and well, we're outside of Frankfort, Kentucky, 859-280-2287. One person writes, Matt, is there any good news coming from the game? Drew, you said you had some good news.
Drew Franklin
Good news. I'm a big silver lining guy. So let's look at the silver lining. Kentucky has lost three exhibition games in 40 years.
Matt Jones
That's true.
Drew Franklin
The fourth, the most recent was in the Bahamas and they won the next 31 games and went 31. And, oh, remember that team lost their last game down there because they were worn out. The One before that, 2002, they went undefeated in the SEC in 2003, lost.
Matt Jones
To athletes in action, won the SEC.
Drew Franklin
Tournament, got upset in the big tournament, but they were one seed. And then the third exhibition loss was 1995 with Mark Pope. And then they went on to win the national championship.
Ryan Lemond
Really?
Drew Franklin
So they've had three exhibition losses before last night in 30 years. And all three went on to do something special.
Matt Jones
That's the 96, the 2003 and the 2015 team. I think we would Take it. If we were that good. So let's. Yeah, let's do it.
Shannon
This is all part of the plan. We've been talking about number nine. How do we get there? We got to make history repeat itself and lose a preseason game.
Matt Jones
Also, I like the staff of the game. It was Kentucky's largest exhibition loss since we lost to the Soviet Union in 1991.
Shannon
Soviets got us.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So people were shocked online that we had played the Soviet Union. We've talked about that on the show.
Ryan Lemond
I guess that's why Pope said, you know, he went exactly what he hoped for. So you now can get him in the, the tape room and kind of show them what they did wrong.
Matt Jones
We played the Communists from D.C. versus the Communist Communists from the. From. From Russia. 859-2802-2871 person writes, Matt, what is wrong with Aberdeen? I don't really know. They said it was a, A leg injury, but we really. I, I don't think he said anything about it. The one. My first quibble with Pope is the way he talks about injuries. I think we're now back to the cow thing where we're going to have no idea if guys are playing or not. And I, I know there's going to come a point, Drew, where the SEC and the NCAA is going to make these coaches just say what's happening with injuries, because it's not. With the gambling part of it. You just cannot play around with this. Cal did it in a worse way, but Pope's doing it, too, where it's like, well, he's okay. We hope. I mean, like, you're going to have to say, like, in the, in the, in the pro sports, you have to say, he is out for two weeks. He is going to play. I mean, in the NFL, they have distinct categories for each type of thing. We're going to end up having to do that in college sports.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, Pope and doing the. I haven't seen him, but he's doing the. Oh, it's beautiful what he's doing for our team, why he's out. And it's going to be special.
Matt Jones
I mean, you can't do that.
Drew Franklin
And we've seen how, you know, we've had two or one and a half seasons of the SEC injury report in football, and that's gone well. I mean, it's nice just laying it out there. This is our roster, and I think they would go to that. Basketball.
Matt Jones
We have a lot of football players out for this game tomorrow.
Shannon
Like 10 scholarship.
Matt Jones
10 scholarship players out, including everyone whose Last name is Smith. We have like. I noticed that we have like four guys whose last name is Smith and they are all out for this game, but a lot of guys out. I think we only had four for the game against Tennessee and now it's 10, including Macklin Wilcox. He was already out, but the bunch.
Ryan Lemond
Of guys, I guess you get McGowan back, though. He's supposed to play.
Matt Jones
That's the big one. We don't know yet for sure.
Drew Franklin
Probable on the one.
Matt Jones
Probable. Okay, well, that's good.
Ryan Lemond
So that's. That's whether they miss him probably the most in the running game and would love to have had him, you know, back there in the Texas game for sure.
Drew Franklin
But if they can't win without McGowan.
Matt Jones
Look, well, that gets another question. People are asking, can we beat Louisville without Low and Aberdeen?
Drew Franklin
They are point guard use. That will be tough. I think so. I'm not nearly as confident. Obviously, you mentioned us on postgame. That's your only road atmosphere and it's now 11 days away. So we need them.
Matt Jones
No, I said without. No, no.
Drew Franklin
But I'm saying that game, it just by itself is the only road true road test. It's right in front of us. So they need them back. If they don't have them, I worry a little bit.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I think if we didn't have either one of them, Ryan, I don't think we win. If we. If we have one or two, then, yes, I feel good about it. But if we don't have either, then, yeah, I think we probably lose that environment.
Ryan Lemond
Before last night, I probably was still felt pretty good about our chances that those guys were out. But after last night, seeing how they struggle without Low and Aberdeen both out there, it'd be tough.
Matt Jones
It would be tough. Who's up first?
Shannon
Jay and Lyndon.
Matt Jones
Jay and Lyndon. Go ahead.
Caller or Guest
Hey, I'm not bummed out about last night, but I'm definitely down from the high of the Purdue game. Let me try to be the optimist here. I think from a fan's perspective, this is the downside of playing a Power 5 exhibition game. If we were playing the Georgetown Tigers last night instead of the Georgetown Hoyas, we might have been down after four minutes and went by 30. And we don't even think about this. This will ensure that we follow Georgetown's first couple games this year, though.
Matt Jones
No, I think that's exactly right. And you're in. You're exactly right about that. I mean, I think for a lot of people this is the downside of having of playing these good games. I mean, it just is. It's the downside of playing good teams is that you might lose. But I'm glad we did it. I was shocked how many people did not know we were playing Georgetown, the university. There were a lot of people yesterday in Lexington Ride who thought we were playing Georgetown College. I think part of it was people gave tickets because they thought they were playing Georgetown College. I got. I had people sending me tickets to give away, and I had one person put in the box not interested in watching us play a team we're going to beat by 50 from Kentucky. And I was like, you realize that's not who we're playing today. I think some people didn't even know you.
Ryan Lemond
Joke. We were at the restaurant last night. There was some people there at the restaurant going, ready to go to the game who thought we were playing Georgetown College Tigers.
Shannon
So. So would you rather have played a team like Georgetown in Kentucky and beat them by 50 or found out what you got with the challenge against the real play?
Matt Jones
If we don't play that game yesterday?
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Then I would say you get that.
Shannon
In the regular season.
Matt Jones
Get. We would have gotten that maybe against Drew, Michigan State in the Champions Classic or something. We would have gotten one of these teams that was. That was athletic, that would have done that to us in the regular season, just like Ohio State did. Maybe it's North Carolina. I don't know. I don't know how teams play this year, but there would have been a team who would have done that exact same thing to us during the year.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, it stinks. Walking out of Rupp arena, being disappointed, what you just saw. I mean, Pope was rocked in his postgame press conference. He's like, it is unacceptable to lose.
Ryan Lemond
Awful dude.
Shannon
I love how serious he takes it, though. Being an exhibition game, he lost his.
Matt Jones
Voice and he sounded like he was going to cry.
Drew Franklin
But now that it's behind us, we'll move on. We'll watch football tomorrow when Pope gets them in practice and he has that film. And now that we know Pope can yell in practice. We heard that the other day. It'll be good for them in the long run, taking that loss that doesn't actually hurt them. Learning a few things and having some teaching moments.
Matt Jones
How many of you all here have YouTube tv? Raise your hand quite a bit. Oh, wow.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Do you know that you lost ESPN this morning?
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So ESPN and ABC are off YouTube TV, at least temporarily. The contract expired last night at midnight. Now, of course, there's a lot of Games tomorrow on espn, including, by the way, the Kentucky game is on the SEC network. So there are. The Kentucky game tomorrow is on ESPN and abc, SEC network. Right now, all of those games are off YouTube TV. 50% of this crowd has YouTube TV. If they don't fix it now, I expect they'll fix it today. I expect knowing that those games are tomorrow, the contract will get fixed today. But if it does not, a lot of people are going to get up tomorrow, Shannon, and not realize that none of these games are on and they might freak out, including our Kentucky fans. We'll have the game at the bar and we don't have YouTube TV, so you can come watch it. But I do think fans need to realize if something doesn't change, you're not going to have the UK game tomorrow.
Shannon
I feel like it happens at least once a year and it's greed on both sides trying to figure out the contract thing. But the people who lose are the subscribers.
Matt Jones
What worries me a little bit about this one though, just from like a business perspective, ESPN has now launched their app. They're direct to consumer app. And I think they have some incentive to play hardball with these YouTube TV people and cable companies saying, we want people to subscribe directly with us. Why give you a portion of it through the middleman? So there's. I could see a world where this one goes longer because in the past people didn't have other options. Now they have other options. And Ryan, I could see ESPN saying, we just want them to subscribe directly with us.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah, YouTube TV subscribers. You probably all got an email last night. I started reading it. It's like, you know, the Disney family of stations. I'm like, well, that's okay. I don't watch Disney. Then I said, it also includes abc. Well, that's all right. But then down at the bottom, like. And the ESPN family of stations. I'm like, oh, snap. You know, I didn't realize this was even coming.
Matt Jones
A lot of people are going to try to watch college game day tomorrow or they're going to try to watch one of those early games and go, wait a minute, I didn't know this was happening. Well, you're going to find out. It actually happened at midnight. I was watching a hockey game and it just went off. Like literally in the middle of the game. Because it was on espn. It just went off. So I had to log in to. Basically I have. Because I work at espn, I have an ESPN plus account, but it was middle of the game with blank right in the Middle of it.
Shannon
Midnight's midnight. They weren't messing around.
Matt Jones
They were not messing around. Who's up next? Trevor. Trevor. Go ahead, Trevor.
Caller
How you guys doing today, Matt?
Matt Jones
Doing great. And by the way, you don't have to ask me how I'm doing. We. We have to turn the volume down. So like just go for it. I'm doing. Just assume I'm doing great.
Caller
Me and two buddies are currently driving down 75 to the universe or Auburn going to the game. We are going to disguise as Kentucky fans, but secretly we are War Eagle this weekend.
Matt Jones
Is that because you're wanting a coaching change?
Caller
Well, I think it's just going to be a terrible game all the way around. That.
Matt Jones
That's not what I asked you. I. That's not what I asked you. I didn't ask you what you thought the game went. Hang on. I didn't ask you what you thought the game was going to be. You're saying you're a Kentucky fan and you're rooting for Auburn. You're not rooting for Auburn because you think the game's going to be bad. Let's be honest. You're rooting for him because you want a coaching change. Am I correct?
Caller
Yes, that is correct.
Matt Jones
All right, so it's very important to be honest about your opinions, not be passive aggressive like a politician. So how do you justify as a Kentucky fan rooting against your own team?
Caller
I just want to go to another bowl game, so obviously can't do that.
Matt Jones
But what if I said to you you could still go to a bowl game this year, you could win this game, you could win the next game and then, you know, pull off a game against Louisville. What's wrong with that?
Caller
Just don't think that's going to happen because we run the three same plays on the goal line, so.
Matt Jones
All right, well, I appreciate the call. Appreciate the call. I mean, let me. Do you think there is any. Okay. By the way, I was. I wanted that guy to explain the position because Drew, I don't think he's person that has it. Do you think there is any justification for. Even if you want a coaching change, which by the way, if we lose tonight, tomorrow you're going to hear me probably say on the post game show, I think it's time to make a coaching change. Tomorrow night is my night if that happens. Because I think we're essentially out of contention for the Bulls if we do it. But do you think there is any reason that you could root for that to happen?
Drew Franklin
Me personally? No. But I'll admit I know others that are like that. I have friends that are like that right now and want to lose. I just can't do that. I mean, I can't look at Cutter Bowley in the face and say, good luck this year or interview Josh Cattus and see him in town and be like, man, rooting for you. And then get on here and say, I hope they lose to Auburn. I mean, I think about the guys wearing the jersey at the school I went to and I just, I'm not capable of rooting against them. It's. It's not the Titans. We don't get the number one pick. If you, if you stink, you actually are probably going to have it harder getting players in recruiting. So there's no reward for stinking. So I get that people want the change, but I can't root against stink.
Matt Jones
You feel like the kind of person though, I could see justified.
Shannon
No, I cannot. Not against your own team. I mean, if he's on his way out, it's going to work itself out eventually anyway. That's the way I see that. So I don't think there's any scenario you ever pull against your own team.
Matt Jones
I. I'm with you on there, too. 859-280-2287. Text machine 772-774-5254. We're going to take a break. We'll be right back. We got some nerd gummy clusters and we got a show. It's is Kentucky Sports Radio.
Downy Unstoppables Advertiser
What's that sound? That's the sound of Downy unstoppable scent beads going into your washing machine and giving your clothes fresh all day long. There it is again. It's like music to your ears. Or more like music to your nose. That freshness is irresistible. Let's get a Downy Unstoppables bottle shake. And now a sniff solo. Nice. With Downy Unstoppables, you just toss wash. Wow. For all day freshness.
Matt Jones
Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio here live at Whiskey Thief UK Federal Credit Union. If you listen to the games, you hear my commercial a lot.
Ryan Lemond
All y'. All.
Matt Jones
They want me to do a different accent and they're so. Just so you know, it doesn't. But the reason they want me to do is they want me to know it's for everyone. So even if you're like Australian, you say, good day, mate. UK Federal Credit Union is still for you as well. That's a good one.
Ryan Lemond
Wow.
Matt Jones
Crikey. That's right. Let's go in and Bust the miss. You don't have to be a part of UK to join. You can go. It's simply not true. You can. Everyone can join at uk. Federal Credit Union. Seven local. Local branches. We're not just for some. Who are we for?
Ryan Lemond
We're for all y'. All.
Matt Jones
We're for all y', all, mate. We're for everyone. Membership eligibility required. Federally insured by ncua. We are here at Whiskey Thief. Tell them you're a whiskey thief. Endorser. Drew, everybody's enjoying the bourbon. Is that. I'm sure the bourbon's great, right?
Drew Franklin
The bourbon's great. But the experience is what makes it so fun. A lot of people, not just because they sponsor ksl. I recommend this place because it's Kentucky. You can, you can throw a rock and hit a distillery these days, but a lot of them trying to be Disney and fancy this big lights, they're in here and they're like, here's the thief. Put it in the barrel. Pour your own bourbon. You can drink. As we've been doing and seeing listeners, you can drink straight from these barrels. You can't do that anywhere else. First place to do it. It's a place you can get tours anywhere. But here they literally let you get hands on and see how the bourbons made. So that's why I like it so much. And the bourbon is good. So check them out. And there's one in Louisville and newly.
Matt Jones
One person writes on the text machine. Matt, what do you think the most Kentucky costume you will see out tonight in Kentucky for Halloween is? Well, I'm hoping to see some with Mario. I think the answer is Mark Stoops. I think there's going to be a lot of people dressed as Mark Stoops. I expect to see the Shannon the cigar. Cigarette.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Not even a cigar. We got a win for the cigar.
Matt Jones
Yeah. This is, you know, the famous cigarette. I think you're going to see a lot of people with the cigarette picture recreating it. I don't know if that's fair to Mark, but I think that's coming in a lot of places tonight.
Shannon
Bags under the eyes, looking a little disheveled, wrinkled shirt maybe.
Matt Jones
I think that's coming tonight, Ryan. I do.
Ryan Lemond
I saw one picture of one. I don't know the lady, but she's going as like a nurse and she's carrying a dead raccoon that she's going to give mouth to. Mouth to during the.
Shannon
That's a good Kentucky one for that story. If anybody.
Matt Jones
She's giving Mouth to mouth to a dead raccoon.
Ryan Lemond
A toy or stuffed raccoon.
Matt Jones
Yeah. If you don't know that story, that would seem really strange. But that. Actually, I really like that.
Ryan Lemond
That's a good Kentucky themed costume, for sure.
Matt Jones
Andy Bashir was dressed as Mr. Rogers. And I have to tell you, I could. I didn't know it was a costume. I thought that was perfect.
Ryan Lemond
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I literally thought that's just what he wore. He dressed up to do his press conferences. Mr. Rogers. I was like, well, that's odd. It's a red sweater. Didn't even occur to me he was being Mr. Rogers.
Drew Franklin
Same here. And I didn't know he's still doing those. Those videos. Yeah, I guess. Is that just still been going since 2020?
Matt Jones
Is he not doing daily video?
Ryan Lemond
I don't know.
Drew Franklin
That was my big takeaway yesterday.
Shannon
Did any, like, change his shoes during the present?
Drew Franklin
No, he did.
Matt Jones
He did the. He did the shoe thing.
Shannon
I always wonder why he changed his shoes. Like, what. What's up with that?
Matt Jones
Well, no. Yeah. Mr. Rogers wore outside shoes. He didn't want to bring dirt into his house.
Shannon
Oh, so he would change.
Matt Jones
I mean, I think people used to do that in the olden days. That's the whole. Yeah, that's right. I do that.
Drew Franklin
I do that currently. Mr. Rogers. Every day. I sit on my little bench, I have my house shoes, I take off my boots, and I'm Mr. Rogers into the house.
Matt Jones
I will tell you, I don't like. And I understand, like, people have a right to do it, but it kind of annoys me, Shannon, when I go to people's houses and they're like, you have to take your shoes off.
Shannon
That's why I don't have carpet. I have all hardwood. Do you agree with that?
Matt Jones
I mean, I. You do it. You don't do it. I just. I think it's kind of. It's a little presumptuous. Now, granted, if somebody walked in with a big flob of mud all over their. I get it.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
But, like, I just. I hate people just think, well, I have to be in socks to be. Well, that was my.
Shannon
When I was a kid. That was my dad. You came into the house, you had to take the shoes off, stranger.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon
If not, then he was giving you the stink.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but.
Shannon
Yeah, I'm not like that at all. But I know a lot of people are.
Drew Franklin
I'll use this opportunity to tell the story I've told 10 times. I'll tell it again. When Ryan was showing me houses and they asked Us to take off our shoes and he just had four exposed toes. My realtor walking around with his broken socks.
Matt Jones
Always a good chance to get a good deal when your realtor has four exposed for both toes. Who's up next?
Shannon
Nathan.
Matt Jones
Nathan. Go ahead, Nathan.
Caller
Hey, what's up, guys? So the first thing I want to say is if you're still taking applications, I definitely want to join the Colin Chandler fan club. I think that he was forced into a role he's not meant for. He's still a good player. But more importantly, I do want to say that I am not a super big fan of Brandon Garrison. I just think that he. He's got a lot of lazy effort on both offense and defense. He's not a great shooter and they're kind of forcing him to be an Amari Williams that he's not meant to be.
Matt Jones
I think as the year goes on, you're going to see that Amari Williams role be more and more Diabate. And I appreciate the call because I think it fits him more. Brandon Garrison. We'll see. I mean, it depends on if the other guys like step up and if the other guys do their roles. You know, Pope said something interesting. I appreciate the call. He said something after the game that I think is really good. He said we are not a great collection of individual talent. He said, but we are a, we are a great team. And some people got really upset at that quote Ryan. And they were like, we spent 20, by the way, every time we lose, get ready for the. We spent $22 million. And it's not just from other people. Our fans are doing it too. Like I. People are acting like they spent their own money. Like there people, there's a lot of we spent 22 millions out there. But I think what he's saying is, and this is what we said the other day, we don't have any first round picks on this team, at least that are playing right now. But when they work together, they can be elite. But if it just becomes beating your man off the dribble one on one, I. They're not going to be very good.
Ryan Lemond
And I think that's how and why he constructed the roster this way. He saw the weaknesses we had last year. He went doubled down, got too deep at each spot. So we don't have those weaknesses bite us in the butt this year like they did last year.
Matt Jones
But. But when we lose, I saw it all night last night. 22 million is going to be ingrained in every person's head because that is being like there are a lot of people that every loss drew, that's what's going to come up. You can just see it.
Drew Franklin
I saw a lot of it online last night. Someone even yelled it during our rapid reaction. I would just say back, that was only like 17 million last night. There are a lot of millions sitting out, maybe even like a 16 million dollar team. So at least get it right. That wasn't the full 22 million there. There were a lot of millions in street clothes.
Matt Jones
Say that was only about 15 million.
