This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome, everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Tuesday, November 4th, Election Day across parts of America. You can give us a shout on the Clark's Puppet Shop phone line, 859-280-2287. Avision Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254. And this edition sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office. If you call TJ, he'll make him pay. I am on my way to Connecticut where I will be for the next couple of days visiting the good folks at espn. Ryan and Drew are back in Lexington. Shannon is in Louisville. And guys, basketball season for the University of Kentucky starts tonight. Are you ready for it?
Shannon
Let's go. I'm ready.
Ryan
Kind of snuck up on me that all of a sudden this is the real season starts tonight. Where'd that come from?
Matt Jones
Yeah, it started last night with a ton of games for everyone but us. But we take the court tonight and this team that we've been very excited about is. Is ready to rock. Drew. I've. I was excited going into the year. I was uber excited after we beat Purdue. Then I got deflated a little bit after Georgetown. But now I think I am where I was a lot of the summer, which is really looking forward to getting this group playing.
Drew
Had a little jealousy last night watching the other teams, to be honest. I'm glad we waited for our own night. But it was very exciting watching all of college basketball last night. And then here in Lexington, I mean, the BBN United Tip off Classic presented by Kentucky Tourism Tipping off. I just can't wait to get in the building for it to actually matter.
Matt Jones
Remind me who the field is for this. Thought you'd never ask for this. Big BB and United. It's Nichols Valpo. Is that right?
Drew
Val? Val Peraizo is in it. Then we got a little Eastern Illinois.
Matt Jones
Oh, Eastern Illinois is the other one. Okay.
Drew
Later today on ksr. I'm not sure the exact time it's going up, but I power rank the teams and have a bracketology for what.
Matt Jones
You can expect in the bb, I.
Shannon
Hope for the one seed. I like our chances.
Drew
We just spoiler. We are the one. See?
Matt Jones
Wow.
Drew
But I did a lot of research.
Matt Jones
How did you power rank the teams when you were comparing Eastern Illinois, Valpo and Nichols? How did you decide who was what? Well, for.
Drew
For drama, I'll work backwards. Let's start fourth. In last place, Eastern Illinois. I have them. They are ranked 333rd out of 365 teams in Ken Palm. Did not have a good season last year. However, they have the nation's second longest winning streak. They won four games, then didn't make their conference tournament. So they are hot coming in.
Matt Jones
Oh, wait a minute. They didn't make their conference tournament. You don't.
Drew
They won four games. Won four games to end the year. So they're behind Florida and. And Chattanooga, which won the NIT for the longest win streak in the nation.
Ryan
About that. Good, good little nugget there.
Matt Jones
That's interesting.
Drew
All right, number three, Valparaiso.
Matt Jones
Hang on, hang on just a second. That's third longest win streak in the country.
Drew
Yes. Other than that, not very good.
Matt Jones
Okay, ready for number three, Valpo.
Drew
Some of y' all might have thought have been Nichols there. No, it's Valpo. Former Illinois player Roger Powell Jr. Is their head coach. He was a Vandy assistant and a Gonzaga. Consistent 13 newcomers. They have lots of height, though. They have seven players that are six, nine or taller, but I have them at number two with a projected record of one and two in the BB.
Matt Jones
How are we old enough? How are we old enough that Roger Powell Jr. Is a head coach? Didn't he just play, like. He didn't play that long ago, did he? Roger Powell Jr. That is not a name from, like the archives. He's got to be in his early 30s, right?
Drew
He has a gray beard. That's. I didn't get his act exact age, but yeah, I mean, that's. That's his name.
Matt Jones
Okay, so you're arguing then that tonight's game against Nichols is for the championship of the BBN Classic. Like, this is. This is probably the two best teams getting each other the first round.
Drew
I don't want to call out the committee which is, I guess Kentucky Tourism or BBN United? I don't know.
Matt Jones
It's Kentucky Tourism. What jerks at Kentucky Tourism.
Drew
I do feel like we had some bad seating here getting this matchup first. I don't think they scouted the field as well they should have. Nichols, youngest coach in college basketball. 30 years old, 220 win seasons this is his third year. They are ranked 225 in Kinpom.
Ryan
Well, you know, there's been this movement two years old.
Matt Jones
All right. There's this movement that, that has started coming with college basketball in terms of scheduling where these, where I've heard a lot of coaches complain about it, especially the mid majors, that teams are only now scheduling really good non conference games or really bad teams. There's like no in between. You remember. I actually think Cal kind of took the philosophy of he didn't like to schedule a ton of great teams, but he liked to schedule teams that could win their conference. Now for whatever reason. And I'm not sure if it's, if it's the change in the RPI or net, I'm not sure why they're doing it, but they're doing these extremes where you play really bad teams and good teams. And it looks like if you look at our schedule, Ryan, that's kind of what we did this year.
Ryan
Yeah, Cal definitely took it, I think too far to the extreme. Playing the not competitive games all in the.
Matt Jones
No, no, no, he didn't do that. Actually to his credit. To his credit, that's not what he did. He would go play teams that could win their conference. So he would not. He. We would usually play one game a year against one of those historically black colleges that were at the bottom. But he actually, to his credit, his view always was I want to play teams from lower conferences that can win their conference because maybe they'll make the tournament and we'll get credit for a win by the committee. Now I think that, which that was Tubby Smith's philosophy. Get people in the hundreds in the RPIs. It seems like coaches, and Mark Pope's doing this too, are now going the other way, which is saying take all the bat the worst of the worst teams and then play them.
Shannon
I think that actually makes sense because you basically have no chance, I mean you do have a chance of losing, but very, very slim chance of losing. And then if you lose the games against the good teams, it really doesn't hurt you that much.
Matt Jones
So I think last night you could see it last night, Ryan and who teams were playing. All right, so if you were to look and see all the teams that were, who everybody was playing most of the Power 25, the top 25 were playing awful teams. And then your mid majors that we're used to, some of them were having to play teams that like nobody's ever heard of. Like for instance, Morehead last night Ryan played Midway. Did you see that?
Ryan
I did see that.
Matt Jones
And almost lost by the way. Midway. Midway was ahead in the second half of that game. Midway's got a team, Boise State, who has been in the tournament a lot of the last few years. They lost to a team called like Hawaii Pacific Lutheran, which is a Division 2 team.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So I just think it's interesting. Interesting how. It's interesting how the scheduling changed and I think we're going to see over the years, I think if they're going to expand the non conference. So in a few years we're going to be playing probably 35 games instead of 31 and we'll probably add two more really good teams and then Ryan will be playing more teams like the ones here in the BB and Classic.
Ryan
So. So what do you prefer? Open up like that or like what? Florida played Arizona last night. Came out of the gate playing a, you know, a top team. Which will you. Which do you prefer?
Matt Jones
I like, I like having a. So for the good of Kentucky, I like having a couple games like this so you get your feet under you. I think for the good of college basketball, Drew, I think they ought to do kind of what college football does, what the NBA does. You know the NBA, the NFL, they try to pack big games into week one. I think college basketball should agree that they should have like the first night, whatever night they choose to be the first night. You have like a bunch of power matchups to get people into college basketball. I mean they had Florida, Arizona last night but there was really no other game that was compelling. I feel like they should do more of those.
Drew
I agree Florida Arizona was a huge game. I guess if you're interested in what BYU could look like, that was exciting. But otherwise a lot of lopsided matchups that even though they turned out to be close games, you didn't get a lot of good head to heads on the schedule. But Florida versus Arizona, that was a good night. One game. I wish they'd do more like that.
Matt Jones
Yeah, well we'll talk a little bit more about that later. So what I wanted to ask you is with this game starting tonight, by the way, our Pre games at 7 o' clock it is on the computer. So Shannon has officially volunteered. He will answer all your calls about how to get, how to answer, how to get on the computer. So if you, you do not know how to find the game tonight, especially if you have YouTube TV that's an added wrinkle. You are allowed to call. Shannon will be at the help desk all afternoon as telling people how to get it on their phone.
Shannon
I can answer all those right now. Just in one.
Matt Jones
How would you answer it?
Shannon
Because ever. I don't know if people realize this, but there's always someone streaming the game on regular YouTube. So if you just go to YouTube and you type in Kentucky versus whoever they're playing that night, there's always a stream of the game.
Matt Jones
Is that true?
Shannon
Yes.
Matt Jones
Every game.
Shannon
Yes.
Matt Jones
There's always a stream on YouTube.
Shannon
You go, I guarantee you tonight you go on YouTube, regular YouTube type in Kentucky versus Nichols, there's going to be somebody streaming the game there.
Matt Jones
But isn't that illegal?
Shannon
That's not for me to decide. But it's on YouTube.
Matt Jones
But I mean, you're participating in what is clearly illegal activity.
Shannon
No, I'm on YouTube. YouTube is perfectly legal.
Matt Jones
But the stream is.
Shannon
I'm not streaming it. Somebody else is streaming it.
Matt Jones
So you don't feel at all guilty?
Shannon
I'm watching somebody else commit a crime. I'm not committing the crime. I'm just watching them.
Matt Jones
Oh, it's like it's a television show.
Shannon
Yeah, you're.
Matt Jones
You're watching a person committed like you weren't guilty when O.J. was running from the cops.
Shannon
That is a great point, counselor.
Matt Jones
You know, Shannon's making a great point. You can't blame Shannon.
Shannon
Right.
Matt Jones
For this person. Elite. So you're saying every game they have it on YouTube.
Shannon
Yes. And. And people are going to ask me like, who is it? I don't know who the streamer is. Just again, type Kentucky versus their opponent. It will be on there tonight.
Matt Jones
All right. Well, Ryan, is that what you're going to do?
Ryan
I'm going to try it. I had to go the old Sling method. Last game, buy a one day subscription to Sling to watch the games. I'm going to try the YouTube version tonight.
Matt Jones
Did you already cancel?
Ryan
Was just a one day thing. You get to buy it for one day.
Matt Jones
Oh, how much was it?
Ryan
Like $7, I think.
Matt Jones
Okay. So Ryan does the installment plan of cable. $7 a day for every time he wants to watch something. Drew, I understand. Feels like that would add up after a while, but yeah.
Drew
Are you going to pay $7 for different trial today? How does this work?
Ryan
Well, we're actually thinking about buying a week package which is like $14.
Drew
But now you've already paid more than just the ESPN subscription.
Ryan
Yeah, because the month like is like $45. But you just buy a week, it's like $21, $14.
Drew
I mean, but ESPN itself, you're already, I think Already starting to add these up, Shannon.
Matt Jones
This is why people get in consumer debt. We're listening to it live with. With Ryan Lemon.
Shannon
You didn't think that one through. Yeah, you got to work well.
Matt Jones
All right, so. So the game is on SEC plus if you have it. Otherwise, apparently it's on YouTube. What is it you want to see tonight, Drew? What do you want to see? Considering what we saw against Georgetown, considering that performance and considering we might not have Low or Aberdeen, I'm kind of thinking neither one of them plays, at least based on the comments by Pope last night. So you're going to have another situation without a point guard. What is it you want to see tonight?
Drew
First of all, I have to correct myself. Florida lost last night. So Nichols, the win streak, or excuse me, Eastern Illinois has now moved up a notch because Florida's winter even didn't even consider last night's results. But tonight with Kentucky, you know, the guard situation, it's hard. As you said, we're not really sure we're going to look at. I'm not going to judge that too much with it being shaky right now. But they have to start shooting better or I'm really going to get concerned about this team. They. They really didn't. Or at least the shooting. They didn't shoot well. Big Blue Madness, if I recall, blue, white, either of the exhibitions, especially some of the guys that are expected to be the shooters, I need to see better shooting for three and at the free throw line, too. There was a moment Thursday they were 10 for 20 from the free throw line. So that has to improve.
Matt Jones
You hit it for me. Those are mine. I need to see him. I need to see him shoot the ball. Well, I mean, they have been. They have shot really badly. And on open shots, I mean, the thing is this group's getting open shots because they have so many guys who can get to the rim, draw, draw defenders, but they're not making shots. And I don't know if a Mark Pope system, I don't know how it works if you don't make shots. So, Ryan, that's going to be what I'm looking at. What about you?
Ryan
Yeah, I think we had a couple of guys maybe for some shots, and a couple of guys like Ken Williams that didn't take a shot when he had it. You saw, you know, they're still.
Matt Jones
I'm glad he didn't take them. He was over 5 when he did. I haven't seen him. I mean, he hasn't made a shot that's mattered in a while.
Ryan
He's the guy we all thought would be one of the best shooters on the team.
Drew
He's had a hesitating way. He does not look comfortable shooting it right now.
Matt Jones
He doesn't look, yeah, he does not look comfortable at all. So that's, that's the big thing for me. You know, this team, from what I understand, the little research I did, they're very athletic. That doesn't worry me a ton because, because they don't have the size and physicality Georgetown did. But they'll be athletic. So you're not going to get those points that we get sometimes just because we're so much more athletic than everybody. We'll probably get those against Valpo in Eastern Illinois. But I'm, we're, we're gonna win, but I do need to see us shoot the ball a lot better. 859-280-2287 we're gonna take your calls. We did not take any yesterday. I want you feel free to call about the stoop situation, the win against Auburn or the game tonight. We got a lot of other things and Shannon, I'm gonna give some tickets away. I had somebody donate six tickets to the game, two of which are like great seats.
Ryan
Oh.
Matt Jones
So we're going to give those away in the second hour. But we will take a break and be right back.

Matt Jones
Love it. Getting Buck Owens putting the word nickels in it. This is why Shannon, you're the best.
Shannon
Good stuff.
Matt Jones
Unfortunately for the people on the podcast, they can't hear this anymore. They can't hear your brilliance. Only half of our audience hear your brilliance.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Which makes me sad.
Shannon
Yeah. I don't know. I don't know that we're ever gonna get that figured out. Where we can get.
Matt Jones
I mean, they're in. Involved in something. I hope they do because it is a huge part of. Of what makes this good. And I hate that you can't do it. This is a great pick. You still send out the songs?
Shannon
Yep.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So you can just play it yourself if you want. All right, so I didn't know this. Here's a little information on the text machine. Matt, the reason the schedules have changed. The mid major coaches have complained about it. They used to use the rpi, which gave you credit for who you played and not as much credit as for if you won or lost. People complained. Now the net puts much more emphasis on wins and losses, which may be good, but you get dinged for losing to anybody outside of Quad one. So coaches have realized you're better off beating a Quad 4 team than losing to a Quad 2 team. And that's why everyone is loading up with Quad four teams. There you go, Ryan.
Ryan
There you go.
Matt Jones
So, like, that makes sense. So now you're going to see like you cannot afford to lose to a Quad two team or Quad three. So you just end up playing the worst teams in the country.
Ryan
It's kind of disappointing.
Shannon
So then all the Quad two teams just play each other then, I guess.
Matt Jones
Right.
Shannon
Because.
Matt Jones
Yeah, they have. They have a problem they can't get. Well, that's what they've been complaining about is they can't get anybody to play them. And in some cases they've had to dip down and play non D1 teams.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So like Boise State last night they lost to a Division 2 team, which is a terrible, terrible loss. But here's what's interesting. It doesn't hurt them because the net doesn't include losses to non D1 teams. So. So they could come up for a bid. And the fact that they lost to a D2 team last night will not hurt them. So now they've given the, the Quad two teams an incentive, Shannon. To not even schedule people in Division 1.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Because it won't hurt them.
Shannon
But does it count for a win if they beat them?
Ryan
No.
Matt Jones
It'S all. It's like. It's exactly right. It's like serve pro. They make it like it never even happened.
Ryan
So like Morehead, you said last night played Midway. Midway is what? Naia.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So. So that game had they lost, they won. It wouldn't have counted. I mean, for Morehead, they're not going to get in that large anyway. But a team like Boise could.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Drew, did you see the player for Hawaii Pacific? What happened?
Drew
Was that the dunk?
Matt Jones
Well, so this guy on Hawaii Lutheran Pacific, he starts cramping during the game. You need to look this up. It's a great video. He starts cramping during the game on the floor, and there's like a minute left. And rather than helping him get off the floor, the trainer comes out on the floor and drags him on the ground to the bench. You got to look at this. Look it up, guys.
Shannon
Yeah.
Ryan
Okay.
Matt Jones
The trainer walks up.
Shannon
I'm watching it right now.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it's a she, I think. Drags him across the floor off the court. That can't be healthy.
Announcer
Procedure.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I don't know.
Shannon
Got a wheelchair, a stretcher, another. Just drag him off. Next man up. Like they're in the bunker at war. They're just dragging him off to like.
Matt Jones
A tent, you know, off the floor. And then the game keeps going and he's just laying there on the ground.
Shannon
Wow.
Matt Jones
I cannot imagine that's recommended.
Shannon
Yeah, that's not protocol.
Ryan
She was told to get him off the floor, so she got him off the floor.
Matt Jones
Look at that video. It's insane. Florida did play Arizona last night. You mentioned Drew. Arizona had a freshman. What's his name? Koi Pete Co opiete.
Drew
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Co opied had 30 points. Florida loses. Auburn nearly loses their first game with Bruce Pearl. They foul on a half court three. I think the Stephen Pearl era. I'm gonna make a prediction, Drew. I don't think it's going to go well down on the plains.
Drew
Yeah, I mean, the foul on the three was outrageous at the buzzer. Standing right at the logo at half court, you're up three. The guy makes all three free throws force overtime. But even before that, they were trying to give the game away. At one point, Stephen Pearl kicks the video board and breaks it like the screens that are on the game.
Matt Jones
He broke the video board. Game one.
Drew
At one point, you're in overtime with Beth Bethune Cookman or whatever and your scoreboards broken and you have Bruce Pearl on TV breaking down basketball. And Steven is just in shambles on the planes, but he ended up holding on. But a rough start for the Stephen Pearl era even though it was a win.
Matt Jones
Now, do you like Ryan, the shot he took after the game though? Stephen Pearl.
Ryan
Oh, I haven't heard this.
Matt Jones
So you Know, Hugh Freeze, I guess would. During his years, he would. Apparently he was known in Auburn world for always saying that the fan base needed to be patient. So Stephen Pearl gets up there and goes, yeah, this is not acceptable. I know folks around here don't want to hear me say, like they've had to listen to that. I, we need to be patient. Well, takes a shot with Hugh Freeze. Ryan on his way out the door, just gives him a quick kick in the rear.
Ryan
See, I like that. I like that part of it that he was like, you know, we're. This not. This is not acceptable. We're not going to be patient. Like, you're been preaching the football side. We're going to go out and not a win this thing. I like Stephen Pearl standing up and saying something like that.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he's not going to work there, though. Shannon, it's not going to work. One person writes, shannon is a narcissist. They will take down that YouTube stream because of Shannon. I'm going to go ahead and tell you, my son and I have watched every game on a YouTube stream. If we can't do it tonight, Shannon is going to need to apologize.
Shannon
I'm just trying to help everybody out. But that confirms exactly what I was telling you, that all these games are on YouTube. I'll say it again. They're on YouTube.
Matt Jones
But what if you just ruined it?
Shannon
How did I ruin it? There's thousands of people watching it. I mean, if anything, the guy who's the streamer is going to have about 50,000 people watching it tonight.
Matt Jones
I know. Which will make it more likely it gets taken down.
Shannon
Well, then they'll just pull another stream up. I mean, there's. There's more than one person that does this too. There's multiple streams, usually YouTube.
Ryan
Sheriff is listening to you right now. He's gonna come after you.
Matt Jones
Okay, well, Shannon's gonna shade. It's gonna ruin it. Narc. Shannon strikes again. Who's next?
Shannon
Let's go to Zach.
Matt Jones
Zach, how are you? Zach.
Caller
Hey, Matt. So I was at the Tennessee game, and when they got the ball back with like a minute 30, I looked at the person next to me and I said, we're giving up a touchdown here. And so I started because we've had a long standing critique that Stoops is bad in the end of first half. So I pulled every box score since 2019 and looked at how many points and touchdowns we've given up at the last four minutes of the first half.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Caller
So since 2019, if you look at all games we've actually outscored opponents by 27 points.
Matt Jones
We just got a minute left. Are you the person that sent me this?
Caller
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Okay, so there's just to summarize because. Got it left. Basically. Stoops has done fine in the last minutes against all teams, but when you look just at the power four, if I'm correct in the middle eight, he's been pretty bad. Isn't. Wasn't that what you came up with?
Caller
Yeah, so I didn't. If you look at the middle eight, we actually don't give a lot of scores in the first four minutes of the second half. But like if you look at like since 2022, the last four minutes of the first half, including Auburn, we've given up 74 points.
Matt Jones
I might have to let you go. I was trying to summarize it for you because we got to go to break but I, but I appreciate it. He sent me a long set of data. It was actually very interesting. Maybe we'll try to get that as a post at some point. We will take a break and be right back. This is Kentucky Sports Radio. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call tj. He'll make him pay.
Shannon
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Text machine. Very upset at Shannon. One person writes. Matt, there's no doubt the stream's getting taken down tonight. It usually has 6 to 8,000 views. Now because of Shannon, it will get up to 30 and that will make them definitely take it down.
Shannon
This is YouTube TV's fault that people are doing this on YouTube.
Matt Jones
I think people are blaming you now.
Shannon
That's fine. I just want to see what the numbers get up to tonight. The streaming numbers.
Ryan
I did get in a message that said that, that it's been taken down before, but the streamer will repost it somewhere else and put a link to it in the chat.
Matt Jones
Okay. Tonight will be fun as you all try to do this. By the way, you can watch the, you can watch the game at the bar. We will not have it taken down because we actually have whatever the account is. Pregame show starts at 4:30, so come get ready for the game today. UK and Nichols. All right. I have this little thing here. Ryan, I think this is good for you. Okay. Okay. It's statistic. It's a statistic website. I have two statistics I want everyone to guess. Are you ready? Ready. First, what percentage of American men are bald? And they, they define that as substantial hair loss.
Shannon
So we're not counting babies. It's gotta be.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it's American. 18 or over.
Shannon
Okay.
Matt Jones
And substantial hair loss. They can still have hair, but they would, I guess. Well, so I guess we wouldn't say bald. It would be substantial hair loss. What percentage of Americans do you think.
Shannon
So at least a horseshoe, almost say 70%.
Matt Jones
You think 70% of American men are bald?
Ryan
Yeah.
Caller
High.
Drew
35.
Matt Jones
All right. Drew says 35. Shannon.
Shannon
I'm going to go 42.
Matt Jones
38.
Ryan
38.
Matt Jones
You and Drew kind of split 70. I think Ryan just is like, well.
Shannon
If I am, everybody's got to be.
Ryan
I know many older men that aren't partially bald.
Matt Jones
That's why that is true now. That's a good point. Once you get to a certain age.
Drew
All right, 70% of men aren't older. There are men that are in their 20s that are men in their 30s.
Matt Jones
Yeah, exactly. They're. They're men at every age. Okay. What percentage of Americans who are 12 and over are on the Internet once in the last three months? Percentage of Americans that have been on the Internet once in the last three months. And the Internet can be used. Computer, mobile, phone, video game, etc. What percentage of Americans are on the. Have been on the Internet at least once in the last three months?
Drew
98.
Ryan
I go say 90.
Shannon
Yeah, I'm going to say 93. Because there's some places that don't have Internet.
Matt Jones
Shannon hits it dead on 93%, which is still. I have to tell you, it still feels oddly low to me, you know, because it feels like. Do you know. Do you personally know anyone that's not on the Internet? I know one person. Larry. Larry's the only person I know that's not on the Internet. He's the only one.
Drew
You said once in three months. Larry been on once.
Matt Jones
And Larry would not have been on in the last three months. I don't even know how he would get on. I don't even think he would know how to get on the Internet. So he would be the only person I know. Do you all know anyone not on the Internet?
Drew
No.
Shannon
Yeah, like one. I mean, outside of people. Not in like nursing homes. No, I don't know anybody.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, I. Shannon's right. There are some places that don't have Internet, but I would say nowadays they might not have like high speed Internet, but they have. A lot of them would have access to phones, though, you know, and you.
Drew
Just said get on it once in a couple months. I mean, that could be at a work a lot.
Matt Jones
Seems low because like, Larry is the only person. I know. And maybe there are others. Okay, how about this? How many in North Korea are on the Internet? Take a guess.
Shannon
They're very techie there, right?
Matt Jones
This is. No. Well, I'm now gonna answer the question. Go ahead.
Drew
North.
Ryan
I thought it was the other way around.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan
Yeah.
Shannon
They probably have, like, law, 20% restrictions against them. That's right. Yeah.
Drew
20 minutes a. Like, it's real. Like, are any of them on the Internet? I'm gonna say 2%.
Shannon
Shannon, 32%.
Matt Jones
Zero.
Drew
I don't think there'd be many.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Not one person.
Ryan
Wow.
Matt Jones
They don't have the Internet in North Korea. Now listen to this. This is amazing to me. North and South Korea were divided. I guess we was either before or after the Korean war, right into two different countries. South Korea, 98% of the country is on the Internet and North Korea, 0% of the country is on the Internet and they are all Koreans. That literally were just divided by a line based on politics. And one ended up with 98% and one ended up with zero.
Shannon
I'm going to the fun Korean part is where I'm at.
Matt Jones
Is that not. Well, no, you're not. They're not letting you go anywhere. I'm reading a book right now about. So there's this journalist who snuck into North Korea and in a. In like an exchange teaching program and wrote a book about it. And it's one of the most fascinating things I've ever read because it's like one of the last societies that's just cut off from the world. North Korea. Like, it's completely cut off from the world.
Drew
I saw a TikTok recently where someone snuck a phone in and got a 30 second video of like, a city. And like, you barely see people and they're walking in a straight line and everything is spotless. Didn't even look like a real world.
Matt Jones
But I want you to just think about the randomness of, like, there are families that were split up and one of them ends up on the side with 98%. Shannon. And one ends up on the side with zero percent.
Shannon
That would be horrible. I'm not. Kim Jong Un doesn't have access to the Internet somehow.
Matt Jones
Well, he. I mean, maybe. Maybe it rounds to zero. All right, last question on this. What percentage of the world has been on the Internet once in the last three months? The whole world once. So we've already done the extremes we've seen. South Korea is 98, America's 93. North Korea, 0. What about the whole world, Drew?
Drew
I will say slightly over 50%. I will say 62.5%.
Matt Jones
Okay. Ryan.
Ryan
I was going to go like 40. I'll go 45. Under 50%.
Matt Jones
Shannon?
Shannon
71%.
Matt Jones
True's good. 63%. Oh, wow. 62.5. 63%.
Drew
I know the world, so.
Shannon
Look at that.
Matt Jones
So I actually think, Ryan, I think that those are interesting stats. Aren't they?
Ryan
It's crazy to think about it. The world we live in, there's still people that can't get on the Internet or don't get.
Matt Jones
My mom just confirmed Larry has never been on the Internet once and has no desire.
Shannon
You got to get him on there one time just to show them.
Matt Jones
That's actually not true. Mom forgets I helped Larry put his car on ebay once. Well, so.
Shannon
But did he do it or did you do it for him?
Matt Jones
He watched me. Does that count?
Shannon
No, no. He's got to actively engage in clicking buttons.
Matt Jones
Maybe it's zero. It might be zero.
Ryan
He doesn't have an iPhone, right?
Matt Jones
No. He's got an old flip phone with no Internet access.
Shannon
Yeah, those are popular. Again, flip phones.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he's never. He may. If that doesn't count, then he's never been on it. Who's next?
Shannon
Noah.
Matt Jones
Noah. Go ahead, Noah.
Caller
Hey, Matt, I got three quick things for you on here. So as a non. As a non drunk Bengals fan, I gotta say it's been a very disappointing couple of weeks. But I will say after hearing your suffering with the Bears experience, I gotta say I do feel a little bit happy for you and a few other friends I know. So I gotta give you at least that. Two, I want to propose that Matt Jones does more renditions of Sunday School songs on Live Here Radio. That was a very enjoyable experience yesterday.
Matt Jones
Thank you very much. I'm glad I remembered it. It's been a long time.
Caller
Well, it was more of some parts of the butchering that was a bit more fun, but either way, with. It was really fun with it. And three, as reputable. Sorry, as hearing what? Some notes that you talked about on the postgame show after the Auburn game. As reputable of a man as you are, Matt Jones, it just feels a little bit of a crime against humanity. You have not watched the Lord of the Rings movies and I will provide whatever it needs to be so that you're able to do that.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I have not seen him. I want to. I appreciate the call. I sit down to do it and then I get distracted. Last night I tried to watch a movie and literally fell asleep during the intro. Shannon During. During the opening credits.
Shannon
There's no shame in that. I've done the same thing.
Matt Jones
It was a movie. It's just got on Netflix. It's about, like, a gambler. And it's got Colin Farrell. It's new. What's it called? Like, Gamble Movie on Netflix. And I literally. The opening credits were one of those scenes where he's just walking and stuff, and I just fell asleep right in the middle.
Shannon
Based off the opening credits, what. What would you give it? Five stars?
Matt Jones
Well, it looked like it could be interesting, so I'll go four.
Shannon
Okay.
Matt Jones
But I did not make it until no one had spoken a piece of dialogue when I fell asleep, so. So, yeah, I don't know. But I've never seen Lord of the Rings. You haven't either, though, Shannon.
Shannon
No, I know I haven't seen any of those.
Matt Jones
Have you all seen it? Ryan? Drew.
Drew
I went to the theater on a date in high school when it first came out and was asleep within two minutes and woke up at the end credits. But I paid money to be there. I was a part of the experience.
Matt Jones
It's interesting. Even when I've had sleep problems, I sleep better during movies and TV shows than just in life. I guess it's because your brain is, like, engaged in something, so you don't think, but then can go to sleep. I don't know what the science of that is, but I sleep better if something's on than if I don't. Have you seen it, Ryan? Lord of the Rings.
Ryan
I've seen. Was there three of them? I think I've seen the first two. Precious. I saw that one.
Matt Jones
I don't think that's. I think Precious. That's the Hobbit. That's a different one.
Drew
That's it, though.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
No, I mean, that's the. That's the. But, you know, the Hobbits, a different book. Like the God you talk about. Gollum.
Ryan
They're the.
Drew
Are you sure you haven't seen this, Matt?
Matt Jones
No, I've read the books. I've read the books.
Drew
So, yeah, to your point about sleeping in movies, I went to a movie theater last night for the first time in years, and I told my family. I was like, by the way, I'm going to be asleep pretty quickly. This is kind of what I do.
Ryan
Yep.
Drew
Right there at Hamburger Regal. They recline. I hope Springsteen had a good career. Springsteen? Yeah.
Matt Jones
I don't know. Is it good? Oh, you don't know. You literally fell asleep every time.
Drew
I cannot go to a movie theater that has Those reclining seat. It could be a movie I'm so excited about seeing. When those lights go down and I lean back. Good night. Wake me up at the credit.
Matt Jones
I would presume the Springsteen movie was loud though, right? Because he's playing music.
Drew
Those are climbers, man. While drinking a Mountain Dew and eating sugary candy, I fell asleep.
Ryan
Talent.
Matt Jones
That's a good sign. Drinking Mountain Dew and eating candy, Watching the Springsteen movie. Clayton and Croom was founded on a simple idea. All leather goods should last a lifetime. Welcome back Techie Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. The name of this book, I do highly recommend this, this is a, this is like a really interesting book. It's about North Korea. It's called without you there is no us. Without you there is no us. And this, this woman, she like joined this group of people to go teach English to like North Korean, like the elite North Koreans, their kids. But like she was actually a journalist so she just wrote about her time there and I don't want to spoil it but it's one of the more Interesting books I've read. So, I mean, I know I could see Drew reading it. Ryan definitely won't read it. I assume Shannon won't read.
Shannon
I don't read.
Matt Jones
But Drew, I could see you might like this. I put on my list, without you, there is no us. And it's interesting, but it's about how basically North Korea is cut off from the world. People are trying to guess where those 7% are. So, Ryan, Amish people. Okay, so they don't get on the Internet. But I mean, how many Amish people are there, though? There's not that many. Right.
Ryan
I mean, there's communities kind of sprinkled throughout the Midwest.
Matt Jones
I mean, what is it even? It's not even 1% of the population, though, right?
Ryan
Probably not.
Matt Jones
Half. Half a percent, maybe.2%, maybe. What about somebody says people in prison. Do people, People in prison, they don't have access to the Internet or do they? I don't know.
Drew
They do.
Ryan
They get certainly once a.
Drew
Once in a couple months, whatever we're doing here.
Ryan
You got like a little laptop thing that you get.
Matt Jones
You can rent so you can get on the Internet?
Drew
Yeah, I got libraries.
Ryan
Yeah, you can download a book and read it.
Matt Jones
Download. I mean, I, I, you know, you used to go to the nursing home every day, Shannon. Yeah, those people get on the Internet?
Shannon
No, no. None of them had phones or anything. Okay, but I saw. So you were asking about the Amish. Over 400,000Amish in America.
Matt Jones
There's 400,000Amish and there's what, 350 million people? Yeah, something like that. So it's probably 0.3% of the population or something like that. You know, something like that. All right. 859280, 2287. One person writes. Matt, I want to know what your all's expectation and requirement of this team is, considering that it costs $22 million. We're going to hear that number drew from now on for the rest of the season, both from critics, fans. 22 million is going to come up over and over as you're factoring in what you think this team should do. Do you think that number matters?
Drew
Not at all. I'm already tired of people bringing it up now. If they finish seventh in the SEC and lose 12 games, yes, then that matter. That number matters. But I don't think that will be the case if they. A difference in a game or two here, there, or maybe you're one round short of a championship. Whatever. The number does not matter to me. Unless it's just an objectively bad and disappointing season.
Matt Jones
Does it matter to you, Ryan?
Ryan
I'm a Drew. Doesn't matter to me at all. Now, we've, you know, in football, we spent some money on some players that aren't even playing. If that ends up the case with basketball, we spend some money on some of these guys that get. Have a bad season, then maybe I might have a complaint. But as of right now, I don't care what they spend. I just want to go out and win the game.
Matt Jones
Doesn't matter to me because it's not my money. And I think this is a unique situation. Now, when we get to rev share, if we as a school intentionally spend our money on basketball instead of football, and then the basketball team falters, I think that's a reasonable discussion. But what, like, private donors give. I. Doesn't really matter to me. Does it matter to you, Shannon?
Shannon
A little bit. Little bit. You say, what are the expectations? I would say Final Four is probably the expectations for most of the fans.
Matt Jones
Your expectation goes up because of the amount of money?
Shannon
A little bit, yeah.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon
I mean. I mean, like Drew said, if they're terrible, then, yeah, I think it really matters. But if they go to the elite 8 instead of the Final Four, am I going to be talking about the 22 million or whatever? No. As far as what the requirements are, I mean, there really are no requirements. Like, if he gets bounced in the first round, he'll get crazy. Nothing's gonna happen, though.
Matt Jones
And it would have gotten criticism if it was $7 million. Right. Like, I think that criticism would have come either way. Who's up next?
Shannon
Let's go to Kentucky Gas Man.
Matt Jones
Kentucky Gas Man. How are you?
Caller
Morning, guys. Hey. I got two different things. I wanted to reiterate what Shannon said about YouTube. I've been watching the Kentucky basketball for probably two years, three on YouTube. No, you started it. You started. But anyway, so there's actually about three different guys on there that does it. And you are.
Matt Jones
Don't say their names. Don't say that you're gonna send them to prison. Don't say their names. Okay, I'm not.
Caller
Oh, no, no, no, no. But anyway, you're exactly right, Matt. I have noticed over time that the amount of views it could get that it gets zapped. But like I said, there's three different guys. So all you gotta do is go to one of the other ones when that gets zapped.
Matt Jones
I'm actually gonna try to watch it on YouTube just to see if Shannon ruined the fun for everybody.
Shannon
Go Ahead, tweet out the link for everybody.
Caller
Also depends on it. It also depends on how high profile the game is. I noticed that whether or not it gets that.
Matt Jones
Gotcha.
Shannon
YouTube should be happy. People are actually going there.
Caller
My second thing is I actually have a trick for college football as well. So you guys touched on it a few weeks ago. There is some Spanish broadcasting on different ACC schools and you can actually go on the free ESPN app. Now keep in mind I don't have to have commentators to watch football. There is the. On the free ESPN app you can go and you can watch the Spanish version for free.
Matt Jones
Now that's interesting. So you're saying for big games the Spanish commentator announcing is free, huh?
Caller
Yeah, on that. There's three different ones.
Matt Jones
That's funny. When before I could get everything hooked up, I was trying to watch. I don't know if it was Vandy Texas or whatever. The first game was Saturday and I noticed that exact thing. I noticed that the Spanish announcers, I thought they were going to go through the table. Shannon, like in wwe and I know and I noticed that it said free and I didn't click on it. So another good piece of advice. Thank you, Kentucky Gas Man. I appreciate the call. So you also, I don't know, do you think we have Spanish announcers? Drew for Kentucky nickels? I'm going to say no, I don't think so.
Drew
I doubt it. But tonight is is Ravi Moss, I believe maybe Ravi Moss. We get a little Spanish.
Matt Jones
Ravi Moss Spanish Robbie Nolan.
Drew
Ravi tonight maybe just a little. We could do an alternate broadcast with them.
Matt Jones
Mayamo. Ravi here to watch Kentucky and Nichols. Well, lots of good tidbits until Shannon gets them pulled off the Internet. Lots of good tickets. We're going to talk a little basket or football and some other stuff going on today. Getting you ready. Kentucky and Nichols pregame at 4:30. We'll be right back. KSR hour two.
Episode Date: November 4, 2025
Hosts: Matt Jones, Ryan Lemond, Drew Franklin, Shannon
Main Theme:
The KSR crew kicks off college basketball season by previewing the University of Kentucky's opening game against Nichols, discussing shifting college basketball scheduling philosophy, streaming options for watching tonight’s game, quirks of the NCAA’s NET ranking, and some light banter about internet statistics and pop culture.
The episode focuses on anticipation for Kentucky’s opening basketball game, the nuances of non-conference scheduling, changing NCAA metrics, the practical dilemmas around streaming games, and humorous sidetracks involving audience engagement and fun facts.
Quote – Drew [02:50]:
"In last place, Eastern Illinois. They are ranked 333rd out of 365 teams in KenPom. Did not have a good season last year. However, they have the nation's second longest winning streak..."
Quote – Matt [16:02]:
“Now the NET puts much more emphasis on wins and losses... you get dinged for losing to anybody outside of Quad 1. So coaches have realized you’re better off beating a Quad 4 team than losing to a Quad 2 team.”
Quote – Drew [08:42]:
“Otherwise, a lot of lopsided matchups that even though they turned out to be close games, you didn’t get a lot of good head-to-heads on the schedule.”
Quote – Shannon [09:34]:
“There’s always someone streaming the game on regular YouTube. So if you just go to YouTube and you type in Kentucky versus whoever they’re playing that night, there’s always a stream.”
Quote – Drew [12:50]:
“They have to start shooting better or I’m really going to get concerned about this team… especially some of the guys that are expected to be the shooters.”
On Why Teams Avoid Strong Mid-Majors Now
Matt Jones ([16:02]):
“The NET puts much more emphasis on wins and losses… you get dinged for losing to anybody outside of Quad 1. So coaches have realized you’re better off beating a Quad 4 team than losing to a Quad 2 team.”
On Watching via YouTube Stream
Shannon ([09:34]):
“There’s always someone streaming the game on regular YouTube … type Kentucky versus whoever they’re playing that night, there’s always a stream of the game.”
Shooting Woes Worry
Drew ([12:50]):
“They have to start shooting better or I’m really going to get concerned about this team ... Need to see better shooting for three and at the free throw line, too.”
On Internet Stats
Matt ([26:50]):
“Still feels oddly low to me ... Larry is the only person I know that's not on the Internet.”
On North/South Korea Divide
Matt ([28:35]):
"South Korea, 98% ... on the Internet and North Korea, 0% ... and they are all Koreans that literally were just divided by a line based on politics."
On NIL Spend and Expectations
Drew ([39:37]):
"The number does not matter to me. Unless it's just an objectively bad and disappointing season."
Hour one sees the KSR crew blend earnest basketball preview talk, sharp college hoops analysis, and their trademark light-hearted banter. The hosts dissect the evolving college basketball landscape, poke fun at streaming hurdles fans must clear, and share poignant or quirky bits about sports, society, and life in general. Kentucky tips off tonight, shooting woes are under the microscope, and the never-ending quest to watch the ‘Cats—legally or otherwise—remains as spirited as the fanbase itself.
