This is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio Wednesday, November 12th. I'm Matt Jones here at the KS Bar & Grill where it is Wednesday. You know, sad game, but you could cheer yourself up with some dollar wings or I don't know, we almost got rid of all the makers mark glasses. I don't know if we're saving them for another event, but. But we are here. Love to see you. Give us a shallow Clark's puppet shop, phone line 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254. In this dish and sponsored by TJ Smith Law Office. You call TJL. Make them pay. Cats lose last night in a disappointing game in Louisville, 96 to 88. I was up on the post game show talking about it. You can listen to that. We actually had really good calls breaking it. Probably the most X and O postgame show we've had. Mario and I were at the game. I'll just give a couple quick thoughts and then pass to you guys since you haven't gotten to talk about it. Ryan, amazing atmosphere at the game. I mean, that was, that's probably, that's probably as good an atmosphere they've had in Louisville in 10 years. I mean, it was, it was loud pre, pregame people were in there. A lot of Kentucky fans made the trip up low arena was 95% Louisville. But you get in the up arena and there was a lot of Kentucky fans up there. A lot of blue, a lot of blue up in the upper arena. So it was a, it was, it was a cool environment. It was, it was exciting without being like hostile like it used to be. Except for, except for one or two, you know, examples of people saying punches were thrown. I, you know, it went from when I used to go to those games and it would be blank. You, Matt, to I, the, the student section all told me I was number one.
Drew Franklin
Well, that's nice.
Matt Jones
Which I thought was very nice of them to say for Louisville. It was like all the it was like their royalty in the crowd. You know, obviously I saw you said Donovan Mitchells was on TV there. I didn't say. Do they show him a lot?
Drew Franklin
Maybe 45 times.
Matt Jones
Yeah. They had a ton of former players. The. It was a great. It was a great environment. And it was, I would say, probably the hardest environment Kentucky will play in all year. I don't think they'll get in a more wild environment than that, basketball wise. You know, for 30 minutes, I thought we played really, really poorly last 10 minutes. Actually thought Kentucky played pretty good. Wish they'd done better down the stretch in those last three minutes. But you go from the 10 minute mark to three minute mark. Kentucky showed, in my opinion, how they can be a really, really good team. But it was interesting who was on the floor during that period of time. Not necessarily who you would have thought. I'll give you my quick takeaways. First of all, negative. Really disappointed in the game. Really disappointed. Our defense, let's start with that defense. Just awful for 30 minutes. Awful. And honestly in the first half, atrocious. Got a little better in the second half, but just atrocious in the first half. We gave up 51. It could have been 60 if they, you know, I mean, they. They got every shot they wanted. Very disappointed in Otega away. I mean, I don't. I don't know. Just doesn't look like the same guy. I don't know if it's something. I don't know if when he was going through the NBA process, people were saying to him, hey, you got to shoot more threes. You got whatever. But the guy that went and attacked the basket and drew fouls and all that. It's just that we haven't seen that guy yet this year. I liked Denzel. Aberdeen was great. I liked the way Low. Played most of the game. Really bad decision making in the last three minutes. That's got to be better. Brandon Garrison, man, we got to work on his defense. Field of 68 was talking about. I was listening to their podcast. Driving from Louisville this morning. Five straight possessions early in the game where we gave up shots, four of which they made open threes, and they put all of them on Brandon Garrison on his decision making. I haven't seen the clip. They put them all on Brandon Garrison saying he was in the wrong place, didn't know where he was going, et cetera. Cut off one time, knocked Aberdeen so he couldn't guard the guy. Gotta be better. And then, you know, I put a little bit on Pope. It took him Too long to realize we needed to go small. It took him too long. We were, we were out there fighting with guys. There were times we had three guys who couldn't shoot on the floor a lot of the time. And then once he said, okay, let's go low. Aberdeen, Chandler, hey, let's put Cam Williams in. Then all of a sudden look like a different team a little bit. So I put it, I think he's got. And he said that after game. It took him too long to change his coaching on that. He got out, coached by Pat Kelsey yesterday. So that's my take. What about yours?
Drew Franklin
The pace was insane. I mean, that pace was insane. And this Louisville handled it better than Kentucky did where they had 20 assists and only six turnovers.
Matt Jones
Yeah, they had 20 and six. We had 14 assist, 14 turnovers. I mean, that's the game right there. Honestly, you could just summarize it in that.
Drew Franklin
And I think our defense didn't handle the pace very well. You're right. Our defense, which I thought was. Remember I said elite, Elite. Elite. Did not look elite yet.
Matt Jones
Not in transition. No. Awful. Anytime they got in transition, they would either give up a wide open shot immediately. Drew, or in secondary transition, give up a shot.
Shannon Ryan
Yeah, I have a very long list of complaints, but my two biggest and the reason they lost the game, you both hit them there a little bit was the turnovers, the points off turnovers, which you just said. And then their best player showed up and our best player, I'm not even sure got on the bus. I said on the pregame show, you cannot let Brown be the best player tonight or it'll be game over. Because his best is probably better than every other one. Well, he was by far the best and the preseason SEC player of the year. I. I'll be honest, when he Drew committed a foul at the end, I was hoping it was his fifth and it was his fourth. I was like, okay. I honestly wanted him to foul out because he was hurting them on both ends. He just didn't seem to be in the game at any moment.
Matt Jones
It is not a good sign. Two things. One, that our best freight, like our best time frame of the game. Our two senior leaders were both not in away in Diabate and our two worst plus minus guys were away and Diabate, like that's not a good sign.
Shannon Ryan
A minus 16 is crazy.
Matt Jones
OA was minus 16. Diabate was like minus 11. I mean always minus 16. When we made the best, the best lineup that was on the floor was low. Aberdeen, Chandler, Williams and then either Moreno or Garrison, that was the best lineup. When they brought owe in, we'd give up points again. I'm shocked by how he played last night.
Drew Franklin
I didn't think we'd have a game all season where he would be removed from the lineup in a late game situation. I thought he was too valuable with this team, what they do. But Pope took him out because he was hurting him. I know the Hardy dude did a great job defensively on him, but not when you're your best player. You've got to step up and make plays well.
Matt Jones
And he also, I mean first he took bad threes.
Drew Franklin
He did.
Matt Jones
But then it was clear he didn't want to take him. And he was like giving up an open three to shoot a contested mid range, which is not his game at all. I was just, I was really, really. Some of the other weaknesses I could foresee, I could have foreseen Garrison's not great in the pick and roll. I could have foreseen low may take bad shots down the stretch. You know, I could have foreseen maybe we'll go cold. I just didn't foresee like away at times being like the worst player on the floor.
Shannon Ryan
He needs lanes for his offense. We know he's got a little bit Archie Goodwin in him. He lowers that head and gets to the rim. But it was working last year. But that's because they had shooters around him where he had the lane when they're clogging up the paint and last night and the ball sticking. He doesn't have an offense, but that was only part of his problems. He wasn't guarding. He had five turnovers.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Shannon Ryan
Either McNeely or Cromwell hit a three at the top of the key in the second half. Wide open and away had just gotten lost and kind of threw his arms up. It was his man. So it wasn't just that the offense wasn't helping him out and giving him opportunities. He was. Seemed like he wasn't even engaged in anything.
Matt Jones
Really surprising because I don't remember him having a game like that even last year. I've said all year, I said during the summer, he can't be our best player. He just can't because I don't. I love that he was first team preseason, this SEC player of the year. I wasn't going to pick him for that just because I just don't think he's that guy. I think he's a great second option. But like one of these guys, whether it's low, whether it's Aberdeen, whether it's they're going to have to be our primary score. And he's got to be second. But he can't be like non existent, which is what he was for a lot of the game yesterday. And a net negative. It wasn't just that he. I mean, he scored 12 points, but he was a net negative.
Shannon Ryan
Five turnovers. Yeah, five turnovers, five fouls.
Matt Jones
So he had five mysteries. I mean, look, if you put it a different way, you go 1 for 6 for 3. You miss five threes, you have five turnovers. You've just given them 10 run outs.
Shannon Ryan
Now throwing all your fouls, that's 10 run outs.
Matt Jones
Right? And then the fouls, you just can't do that.
Shannon Ryan
And that's your player of the year.
Drew Franklin
I never would have projected that that could even possibly name one time all season long. You know what the media practice, Josiah. Remember he told me, said, dad, his shot is broke.
Matt Jones
It's worse.
Drew Franklin
It's worse.
Matt Jones
It's worse.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Like he now does this thing where like he moves it in front of his face. He did that a little last year, but it seems a lot more kind of. It's.
Drew Franklin
I agree.
Matt Jones
It's wor. And yeah, I was. I was disappointed and I. I was disappointed. I mean, Popes, he got out coached. Now he. He's a smart guy. Last 10 minutes, they switch. They changed. They got to where they needed to be. And I think you'll. In the future, if we were to play Louisville again tonight, you'd see that line up a lot more.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, but he taught me a new word last night.
Matt Jones
What's that?
Drew Franklin
Dumb effort.
Matt Jones
What do you mean? That's. That's two words.
Drew Franklin
Phrase. Call me a new phrase. I'd never heard that phrase used before. Dumb effort.
Matt Jones
Okay, well, he's right. I don't think we. I don't think we didn't try. We just were. We were in the wrong place. Over and over and over, over and over and over and again. They got. They. They fixed that in the second half, but I think it just took too long, Drew.
Shannon Ryan
And when they were switching everything, Louisville was getting the matchup. They wanted that a lot of times involved Brandon Garrison.
Drew Franklin
Yes.
Shannon Ryan
That wasn't helping. They changed that up a little bit in the second half. It. I know we all had memories of Duke and Gonzaga like, well, maybe Pope just likes to get in a hole. That one was that 130 run that did them in in the first half. I know we had a little bit of hope getting within four. That even felt like fool's gold to Me the four or three pointers. That was nice. But I mean Chandler pulled up from five feet.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon Ryan
Aberdeens was Williams.
Matt Jones
It's like first with the year.
Shannon Ryan
It wasn't like the offense found something. Those guys all just hit shots. So it. Even when they got back in it, I didn't feel like they were ever really stood a chance or was.
Matt Jones
There was one moment when we, when low got the tie up and we go to break and we have the ball and it's a four point game and then he drives, he gets fouled. I said this last night. He was passing to chandler for a 3. I wish they hadn't called the foul. Chandler was wide open in the corner. I'd like to have seen him take that shot because that could have cut it to one. And if he shoots that three and makes it that crowd, because that crowd was getting nervous. You could just tell.
Shannon Ryan
I mean they were saying on the broadcast you.
Matt Jones
You could tell the crowd was getting nervous. And I think if they had made that shot but then they, they call the foul and then low misses the free throw. That was. That was tough because Aberdeen had just missed a one on one like right before that.
Shannon Ryan
Missed back to back.
Matt Jones
I mean those are four points right there if your two guards got to hit those free time.
Shannon Ryan
I hated Lowe's three in transition. Even though they were hot. I think he had numbers. They were getting downhill. He was probably gonna draw a foul. Their big man was backpedaling. I've. I feel like it could have gotten an easy to if he had kept going.
Drew Franklin
That's the first thing I said to you guys. You walked in. I screamed at the TV at that position last night. You're cut at 4, you've got the ball. Your point guard has it. Instead of running any offense making some execution, he jacks up a three from the logo.
Matt Jones
I didn't like it and I think that he made two. Missing that free throw and doing that was bad. With that said, we ain't even in the game if not for him. Like the offense without him is a cluster. It really now the offense with him, if he shoots too much is. But like you know the beginning of the game. Some of that you could remember the first couple minutes and then they put him in and they, they score. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Immediately had a couple alley oop lobs as soon as he came to the game.
Matt Jones
What happened by the way? We, we did a great job early in the game at getting bigs dunks. Yes. And that just went away. It just completely went away.
Drew Franklin
Brought in wiz Khalifa's dad that came out there.
Matt Jones
Why do you keep saying that? Just because he's the only person whose last name. Khalifa.
Shannon Ryan
Khalifa.
Drew Franklin
And he looks like he's 45 years old.
Matt Jones
He does. He moves like it too, but he actually played okay. Yeah.
Shannon Ryan
Yeah. Pope loves him. I do think that headband might be doing some help for the hairline. Does seem a little older than most players doing strong work.
Matt Jones
Their credit.
Shannon Ryan
I mean, your boy FRU had some.
Matt Jones
Big dumps after we make all that fun of fru.
Shannon Ryan
My guy Ruth didn't really play much. I mentioned him in the pregame.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but it was. Mr. Pryor didn't do a lot after.
Shannon Ryan
Talking Brown and Conwell.
Matt Jones
They're great.
Shannon Ryan
54 combined or 53.
Matt Jones
Well, they had the two best players on the floor. I mean, at the end of the game, if you put two. You put two even teams next to each other and then they have the two best players. Yeah, they're going to win. And that. That. That's what happened. I mean, we. It is. Some ways we were lucky to only lose by. No, I fully believe that they were.
Drew Franklin
Getting ready to run us off the court there for a minute twice.
Shannon Ryan
So how many times do teams miss seven straight free throws at the end of the game? And we got zero points off of that. That is crazy for a team to miss seven straight. And we did nothing.
Matt Jones
But they had. They were up 18. They were up 18 ones and 20 later and we still. And both times we fought back. So that's. That's a good sign. But, you know, Pope sounded dejected after the game and he should have. That was. That was a bad performance. And what's a little concerning is if you were to have said to me after the game, who were the three players that disappointed you the most? Probably would have said away. Diabate and Garrison.
Drew Franklin
That's it.
Matt Jones
And that's like. That should be your three that are the most solid, you know, road rivalry game.
Shannon Ryan
Those are three that I think show up looking for a fight and they engaged and they weren't.
Matt Jones
And they were probably our three most disappointing players on the floor. 859-280-2287, we'll take your calls. This is probably. We're gonna be talking about most of. Most of the day. This is ksr. Welcome back. Tell you sports radio. Let's get some text message comments. One person writes, matt, are you worried long term about the team or just disappointed in the game? More disappointed than worried long term. I mean, I think they're going to be all Right. But I also think they got to get some stuff set. I mean, I like low at the one, Aberdeen at the two, but if we get games like that from away, you're going to have to start playing Chandler at the foot three. I don't care what the nil is for everybody else. Right. Same thing for Moreno and Garrison. I mean, I'm, you know, we're getting close to me saying Moreno needs to be starting, which I would have never imagined, especially.
Shannon Ryan
Right.
Matt Jones
And maybe more minutes for yellow Vic. He probably slid his feet better against Mikhail Brown than anybody on a couple of those switches.
Shannon Ryan
He had two great possessions. Guarding.
Drew Franklin
He came off the bench, gave him a spark in the first half. Cam Williams came off the bench, gave him a spark in the second half.
Matt Jones
I like Aberdeen at the two because I think it allows him to find his offense and you kind of have to just. You have two guys who can distribute and lead. So I like, I like having those guys in at the same time. Do you?
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Shannon Ryan
He turned it on and had one of the higher scoring games Kentucky's had in the rivalry. But I'll admit, after back to back air balls which were in that 13 oh run, I was pretty tired of seeing him too. Now he started making him after that, but he had a rough stretch.
Matt Jones
He had a rough stretch. Jasper had some rough. We shot. How many air balls did we shoot?
Shannon Ryan
Aberdeen had three. Airball. Airball, threes on his own.
Drew Franklin
And that one stretcher. Talk about he had back to back to back.
Shannon Ryan
Yeah. And then another one later.
Matt Jones
How do you end up with. How do you. If you're Aberdeen, either make it or it's an airball.
Shannon Ryan
When four for ten, three were air balls. And you know, we all want Jasper to do well, but we kept hearing about he and Brown in the same class, know each other teammates. Brown look like he's on another level. I think he took four threes, but none of them looks like even close. A brief appearance for him last night.
Matt Jones
I, I don't understand why we went under screens so much last night. I mean, we went under screens. I don't know what, I don't know what that game plan was or if guys just didn't read it right, but I mean, how many we did stop that, doing that in the second half. But in the first half we went under all. It was just giving up shot after shot after shot.
Shannon Ryan
And they don't even have good bigs.
Drew Franklin
McNeely when they did that a couple times with him, man, how do you leave him?
Matt Jones
He can do one Thing.
Drew Franklin
That's it.
Matt Jones
Making beat you off the dribble. Plus we're so long down low. Make them score over us. If they do shake their hand and say, okay, yeah.
Shannon Ryan
If fru who just got to college basketball was like, wow, this rivalry is crazy. If he's in there beating you, all right, good job, Free.
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, Mikhail Brown beats us at the rim, fair enough. But then make these other guys beat us at the rim. Don't let them shoot threes.
Shannon Ryan
And to Louisville's credit, it didn't help that they had an answer every single time Kentucky did something. Especially at the end when we were dreaming a little bit. That three point play, that was a huge play.
Matt Jones
That was play of the game.
Shannon Ryan
And then he always had.
Matt Jones
Who ended up on him? Garrison.
Shannon Ryan
I think they switched.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I mean, you. Anytime Mikhail Brown's got the ball and there's a pick and roll and it's low in Garrison, it's over like Pope. Like, they need to make it to where they're just. There's a universal. We cannot make low on Brown. You know, I just say to Aberdeen or away, you do not leave him, no matter what. Because they kept ending up with that and he's just not going to be able to guard him. It kind of reminds me of Kobe Braya last year in some ways. Different players, but there's just guys Kobe Bray couldn't guard. Lowe's not going to be able to guard a dude like Mikhail Brown.
Drew Franklin
And why not put diabate at the five when you're in a late game situation like that?
Matt Jones
He can. He can. But he also. I mean, he made some terrible read. That's why he wasn't in at the end. So quaint.
Shannon Ryan
Can't get back soon enough. I truly believe some of the. Their layups would have ended up in the third row of Quinton. Maybe because Garrison's just not a shot blocker and that's where he specializes.
Drew Franklin
We just got to win the football game now. That's all we need to win the football game and forget about that would be hilarious.
Matt Jones
That's what you're. That's what you're.
Shannon Ryan
You're.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. For the next.
Matt Jones
Waiting on two weeks.
Drew Franklin
A little over two weeks. Bring on the football game.
Matt Jones
All right, so we played Michigan State on Tuesday. Completely different team. Like, more like Purdue than like Louisville. You feel good about that game?
Shannon Ryan
I do. They don't shoot very well now. It is in New York. I hope we're not doing the whole. The whole team gets engaged in Central park and we Go see Lin Manuel. All right. That. We can do that later. I like that, too. But this is a business trip. Let's get focused and go win a New York City game against a team that can't shoot. I'm glad they had their Christmas party last year. I love New York Christmas, too, but, yeah, we did.
Matt Jones
We did.
Shannon Ryan
We smoked them after everyone had their holiday vacation.
Drew Franklin
You know, I really thought we would have trouble against a team like Purdue, but then they proved me wrong in that exhibition game. So I'm not worried about playing teams like that. I'm more worried about teams now that played like Alabama and Louisville.
Matt Jones
So part of the thing. I said this towards the very end of the postgame show last night, caller made this point. He made a really good point. All right. So last year, I firmly believe, if you're trying to figure out how this Kentucky team ended up, you got to go back to last year. And specifically, you got to go back to the three games against Alabama, because I think we could have played Alabama 30 times last year and not one. Right. We just could not guard them. And I think Mark Pope, after being years at BYU and Utah Valley and playing Big 12 teams, he kind of saw those Alabama games. I mean, he said this to me back in the spring. We got to get. We got to get a team of guys who can play in that game.
Drew Franklin
Yep.
Matt Jones
Right. Because we score. We actually, in those Alabama games, if you go back, shot the ball just to stay in it. So I think he built this roster thinking about playing against the Alabama type teams. Louisville's one of those teams.
Drew Franklin
Yes, it is.
Matt Jones
Right. They're one of those teams this year. So you build a roster to guard those guys and you so inevitably lose a little shooting, maybe lose a little offense. But the idea is, I am not going to let them score 100 points on a season. And then we didn't even guard. That's what's frustrating to me. You built your roster to have a shot in games like that, and you sacrificed offense to try to guard teams like that. And then we didn't guard them any better than we did last year, Drew. And that's frustrating. Yeah.
Shannon Ryan
I mean, looks like we've given up a little bit of shooting to help out on defense, but if the end result is still the same, I'd rather just go back to jacking up threes. Yeah. A better chance of making them. We've played the game of who would you take from last year's team? Put on this team a few times after last night, I'm Changing my pick to Lamont Butler and some defense in the backcourt. Also. Lamont Butler killed Louisville last year, but those guards were missing a sturdy defender in the back.
Matt Jones
They should be Aberdeen and always should be good defenders. That's why they're here. In some ways, I think the always.
Shannon Ryan
Was just he wasn't there. Did not look like he was given full energy. Louisville was playing like they were on fire and Kelsey deserves credit for that. And away look kind of like going through the motions a little bit. Someone on Twitter is like, looks like he's aura farming out there and just trying to. Trying to look cool. I know that's probably. Or a farming just like, look at me out here. I'm just. I'm Otega.
Matt Jones
Oh way.
Shannon Ryan
I'm the player of the year over here. Look at me. But a lot of guys are out there a little more hungry and fighting.
Matt Jones
I've never heard the phrase aura farming.
Shannon Ryan
That's what you do.
Matt Jones
Do you plant seeds?
Shannon Ryan
Have you seen the kid on the canoe? Well, you know Mario, what's his name? He's aura farming where he's dancing. Aren't you the tick tocker?
Matt Jones
Yeah, but I don't go into the aura farming now.
Shannon Ryan
Look. Look it up. That's. That's what Oway was doing a little bit. Trying to be a little too cool when a lot of guys were hungry and playing with energy. Trying to.
Matt Jones
Actually, I did think a lot of our other guys did play hungry and energy. I mean, I did think Aberdeen, Low, Chandler, Moreno. You know, I did think those guys were even Garrison was not playing well, but he was playing with energy. But there was a sense for me that like nine of them were full speed and then always kind of, I don't know.
Drew Franklin
He was aura farming.
Matt Jones
He was. I didn't know him. Apparently he was aura farm. He was canoeing. Yeah, There we go. We'll take a break. Take your calls right after this.
Shannon Ryan
Ksr, TJ Smith, personal injury attorney.
Drew Franklin
Call tj.
Shannon Ryan
He'll make him pay.
Show Producer
Now more of Kentucky sports radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome back, Techie Sports Radio. 859-280-2287. One person writes. Matt, I was at the game. I saw all the students flipping you off. You waved at them and they didn't know what to do. Yeah, I just went. But I acted like they were saying I just went. Yeah, well, thank you. I am number one.
Drew Franklin
So no issues with you though, inside?
Matt Jones
No, I thought it was actually people were a lot nicer to me than they Used to be it shows you time heals all wounds. Yeah, right. They got. Saw a lot of people I hadn't seen a long time. Saw Shannon's guy, Jerry Eves.
Show Producer
Yep.
Matt Jones
Brown. Like a lot of people from back in the day that I. The only person didn't talk to Pat. 40. Still didn't really seem to want to talk to me.
Drew Franklin
You see Vince?
Matt Jones
I did. I saw Vince. Didn't get to talk to him, but I saw Vince. Vince was set a little part of the game behind the uk.
Shannon Ryan
What color was he wearing?
Matt Jones
He was wearing red, but, like, I think he was barely neutral.
Drew Franklin
Purple.
Matt Jones
Yes, both. Yeah. I think he was like. He was kind of half into it.
Drew Franklin
I did see Mario take his camera up in the Louisville cheering section.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I look up, Mario's in the Louisville student section. I was like, deb more at UK was like, watch him. Be careful.
Drew Franklin
We can't protect him. Get him out of there.
Matt Jones
So he kicked the UK kid out. So I don't know who this kid is, but let me give a shout out to this kid. A kid went in the U of L student section, one kid in blue, and apparently did not have a ticket for that. Like, he wasn't even a U of L student. He was just like, I'm gonna sit in the U of L student section with the UK shirt. And he was like. And they kicked him out. But I give him credit for trying.
Drew Franklin
That's a boss move.
Matt Jones
You know what I mean? Just. He was a UFL student. That's UK fan. He just went in there and was like, I'm a student now. I like that.
Shannon Ryan
It's my spirit animal. You know, at the football game, was it two years ago where we won in Louisville, there was that one UK fan doing Ls down.
Matt Jones
That's one of the great videos of all time. Yeah.
Shannon Ryan
Yeah, I still think about that.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Shannon Ryan
I hope he's doing well. He represented us well at their stadium.
Matt Jones
He's a. He's a Jif or whatever. Oh, yeah. On online, you can look him up and look. You look a bells down. I think he's the first person that comes up.
Drew Franklin
Well, the poor kid that Mario went to interview in the student section last night looked like he was scared to death for a little while.
Matt Jones
He should have been. They were the rowdiest people. They were. Their student section was good last night. I mean, listen, they had. They had a really good. They had a really good atmosphere the entire time. I mean, it was. It was. You know, I'm glad we got to do that. Because we're gonna face that in the sec. But that'll probably be the best atmosphere we get all year. I. I would think eight, five, nine they've had there.
Drew Franklin
And what's like eight years?
Matt Jones
How about the first sellout since COVID That's crazy. That's crazy. They haven't sold a game out since COVID That's nuts, isn't it?
Shannon Ryan
Yeah. And I don't want to complain about this after the loss. Luckily, we've been complaining about since it started. But I even today, hate the game being where it was. I mean, credit to them. It still matters. We got to hold our L. But it would still be better down the road because we're just. There's too much going on right now. It snuck up on us. And then we're going to move on to the next football. Still here. I wish the game was isolated further in the season.
Matt Jones
Shannon, this is probably for you as a Louisville guy. It was interesting to me because I did the pregame show at the studio, which, for people who don't know, that's on Fourth street, right? Yeah. And so Mario and I left the studio to walk to the game, and Fourth street was as dead as anything's ever been.
Show Producer
It's dead all the time.
Matt Jones
All the time. Which you would think before the UK U of L game, there'd be people in there. Dead, dead, dead. I saw Gordon Beers has closed even in the last couple weeks, so. Dead, dead. So I was like, man, poor Louisville downtown. But then it just looks like everything's moved down next to the river, Shannon. Because, like, all those bars and restaurants down next to the river, those two or three streets were packed with people.
Show Producer
Down on Market Street.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So that Market, Main Street. So what? Used to be people.
Shannon Ryan
People.
Matt Jones
So people always say downtown's dead. Fourth street is the deadest thing that's ever existed.
Show Producer
No clubs there anymore. It's all restaurants.
Matt Jones
Nothing. All gone. But that Market Street, Main street has new things coming in. So it was interesting, Shannon, just to see how much downtown's changed, even in the last few years.
Show Producer
Yeah, I mean, Fourth street used to be the place to go to. You had club after club, and you would just bounce around from bar to bar, but now it's all restaurants. Guy Furious is down here.
Matt Jones
But, like, Guy Fieri's was dead. Like, it was all dead. But then once you got down close to the arena, it was wild. It was like, kind of a cool atmosphere. So. All right, who's up first?
Show Producer
Let's go to Cindy.
Matt Jones
Cindy, go ahead. Cindy.
Caller Cindy
Hey, thanks for taking my call. I'm Kentucky till I die. Can any of you all tell me if Donovan Mitchell was at the game?
Matt Jones
He was at the game. Yes.
Caller Cindy
I think that was he was the only one they showed. I think as I didn't want to lose but I sure got tired of seeing him and go cats. I'll see you in New York.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Ryan, you made you made a joke about that you were being Mr. Funny man online.
Drew Franklin
I think they showed Donovan Mitchell more than he showed Pat Kelsey during the broadcast. And I am not even making joking about that. They absolutely did.
Matt Jones
Do you think Mark Pope got out coast? Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. I don't want to admit in game.
Shannon Ryan
And just getting them ready. I mean from the tip Louisville seemed to want it a lot more.
Drew Franklin
I think Pope finally made some good adjustments but it waited way too late.
Matt Jones
That's what so I feel good that he made the adjustments. We've had coaches that would have never made an adjustment. True. We did make an adjust but it was too late.
Drew Franklin
Too late.
Matt Jones
And I'm not just saying Cam Williams. Okay. I mean I think that was part of it but you know, Pope didn't know know that Ken Williams hadn't hit a shot all year so he didn't know he was going to do that. I just mean the idea of spreading it out and going small like we waited way too long to go small. We kept trying to force like this Diabate Garrison thing is going to work. One of those two guys. This is my prediction. One of these two guys is ended up on the bench because I don't think those two dudes Drew can play together. I just don't I I against a lot of teams them playing together just kills our offense. Yeah.
Shannon Ryan
And it was the the non shooting lineups for way too long which we thought we had gotten away from that with the last regime that didn't have enough shooters on the court. This team I worry that that'll linger and that's what hurts away can't get to the lanes. I just maybe Trent Noah's the answer but the shooting has to get more consistent or this offense is going to continue to be said.
Matt Jones
Why do I didn't know a play.
Drew Franklin
You think you know he said he went through warm ups with his ankle. Maybe he tweaked it during warm ups or maybe he just felt like he couldn't.
Matt Jones
I mean he would probably wasn't a great game for him but you know I'd like to have just it wouldn't have been the worst to say okay, maybe he could have played that Cam Williams role and been the four just shooting threes. I don't know.
Drew Franklin
What do you think was the most efficient lineup last night?
Matt Jones
The lineup that I thought was the best was. Was low. Aberdeen, Chandler, Williams, Moreno. To me, that was the lineup. That was when the team looked the best.
Drew Franklin
They didn't even play that lineup much, did they?
Matt Jones
Well, they did down the stretch. Those guys played down the stretch for a while and then they bring away in and Garrison. They kind of would switch Chandler and Moreno for sometimes putting in away and Garrison. But, like, at the end of the game, Johnson didn't play. No, Diabate didn't play.
Shannon Ryan
I'm with you, though, on the Williams thing. He looked great. He hit both of his shots, had four rebounds in like 10 minutes.
Matt Jones
But you didn't know that.
Shannon Ryan
If you're Mark Pope, you don't pull into Louisville thinking, I'mma unleash Sam Williams tonight. Just based on what we've seen now, it's great that he did it and hopefully we get more of it. But I can't put Pope on not bringing him early, just how bad he's looking.
Matt Jones
But I'd like to have seen maybe early in the second half. Yellow, Yellow. I thought had a good first half, so I'd like maybe to seen him a little bit instead. I just know. I knew last night the diabate Garrison thing was not going to work. Who's next?
Show Producer
Let's go to Dustin.
Matt Jones
Dustin. Go ahead, Dustin.
Caller Dustin
Hey, Matt. So I have some scuttle butt. I'm gonna need a wanting on all.
Matt Jones
We don't wanting strangers scuttlebutt. So you just have to say, all.
Caller Dustin
Right, all right, all right. So I went to the remote yesterday, guys, and great show. And I did an interview with your media team. And while I was there, I decided to go to the game. So I went. And after the game, I didn't want to fight traffic, so I went to a bar.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Caller Dustin
On main street and so made some friends with some Louisville and Kentucky fans, was talking to them. They went outside to smoke and they were talking to somebody in Kentucky gear. So here's the scuttlebutt. And so while they're talking to this person in Kentucky gear, they asked how long they were Kentucky fans.
Matt Jones
Okay, you got to get to the scuttlebutt quicker. This is a lot of lead in. What's the scuttlebutt? Yeah.
Caller Dustin
Okay.
Matt Jones
So.
Caller Dustin
So the person said that they're die hard wolvo fan, but they work for KSR and They asked, well, why are you working for ksr? And they did the Calzada money hand and I showed them somebody that.
Matt Jones
So you're talking about. Are you talking about. Are you talking about Olivia? That just started.
Shannon Ryan
Could have.
Drew Franklin
Yes.
Matt Jones
Okay. All right. Well, there were pictures of her in Louisville gear. Yeah. I appreciate the call. I don't know. You call it. He's calling people out there.
Shannon Ryan
He is.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
I think he deserves a wani nana for that.
Matt Jones
Yeah. With the uk, But I guess that's. Well, more disappointment. It's on Mario.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, Mario.
Matt Jones
It's on Mario. Mario's the one that found her.
Shannon Ryan
Everyone, Tom, Mario, everyone I vetted and hired on the website. They've been haters. Mario.
Matt Jones

That's right for secondary.
Matt Jones
She's done a good job, but we're gonna have to. We'll have to ask about this loyalty thing. He can't be. Really can't be rooting for the cards. We'll take a break. Barry backs Kentucky Sports Radio. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio text machine. A couple people calling that caller a narc, then a couple people saying, that's what you get, Matt. When you hire, one person writes, Matt, you once hired a Vandy fan too, but that worked out.
Show Producer
Who?
Shannon Ryan
Me?
Matt Jones
You? Yeah.
Show Producer
What are you talking about? I mean, I've been a Kentucky fan, but I've always disclosed that I was a Vanderbilt fan.
Matt Jones
I know what the point was when I got you, you were a Vandy fan and you've come around.
Show Producer
Sure, but I was also a Kentucky fan as a kid growing up. I like both teams.
Shannon Ryan
Yeah, he grew up wanting to play for Bob Knight.
Matt Jones
That's true. You're an Indiana fan. Drew and I are the only true fans on this show.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, when I was a kid, I was definitely gonna play point guard for Bob Knight. No doubt about it.
Matt Jones
Look at that. And you, who did you like when you were a kid. No, just no teams. Okay. You can't pause. What's the answer? Kentucky. Okay.
Show Producer
I think Billy was a Florida fan.
Matt Jones
Billy was a Florida fan when he was younger.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, right.
Matt Jones
But. But so, you know, hopefully you end up winning them over. One person writes, Matt, the biggest upset of last night was not Louisville beating Kentucky. It was that you were the best dancer on the Twist video. Truth we've said. Believe me. I've told you all. Nobody believe me.
Drew Franklin
I. I've seen you dance. You've got rhythms. I knew you'd be the best one ranking them.
Matt Jones
I think I would probably go. This is just objectively me. One, Drew two, Mario three, Ryan four. Yeah, Shannon, you were the worst.
Show Producer
I put no effort.
Matt Jones
Which is crazy because you're in a band. You would think you would be.
Show Producer
Why don't you Chubby checkers the twist.
Matt Jones
When I understand that you would think you would at least have rhythm.
Show Producer
I do. I just wasn't putting any effort into the video.
Drew Franklin
People were asking about the face you were making when you did your.
Matt Jones
I was doing a couple people. Wait a minute. A couple people recognize. That was Vincent Vega from. From Pulp Fiction. That's face he's making when he's doing that. When he's doing the. The. The Jackrabbit Slim twist.
Drew Franklin
Looks like you had a tummy issue or something.
Matt Jones
No, I mean that was. I was. A couple people got the reference in the thing, but Shannon was disappointed. But all these people wrote me Mario, and they're like, oh, we didn't know you were. I told you. I've told people.
Show Producer
It wasn't that good. Slow down.
Matt Jones
First of all, it was good.
Drew Franklin
I mean, Janet Reno has talked about your dancing for 30 years.
Matt Jones
First of all, I think she's passed away. Rest in peace.
Drew Franklin
Rest in peace. Janet Reno, your dance partner?
Matt Jones
Yes. One person writes Matt. Now after this game, we have five games left against power non conference teams. How many do we win? All right, so Michigan State, North Carolina, Indiana, St. John's who's our other one? Gonzaga. What's our record in those five games?
Shannon Ryan
I had us at undefeated in the non conference. So I am already my prediction. I feel better about Michigan State. I think they'll respond. They don't have shooters. I the St. John's when I'm looking to is the potential at all still.
Matt Jones
I mean, they play like Louisville. Yeah. You know, I mean they're going to be. They're going to be a lot like Louisville. Probably not quite as athletic, but maybe better shooters than Louisville and Pope.
Shannon Ryan
I Don't care what he says. Looking over and seeing Rick Pitino has to get in his head just a little bit. I mean, that was his coach. I know he's going to want to win it, but that's. That'll affect him seeing his old boss.
Matt Jones
Over there, I must say. We win the two home games, Indiana, North Carolina, I think we beat. I think we. I think we lose the St. John's and then we'll split Gonzaga and Michigan State. I think we need to beat Michigan State. Michigan, of all those teams, they're the worst one. And that's who we play next week. So I think that becomes a very important game for us next week.
Shannon Ryan
Gonzaga. Didn't they, like kill Creighton last night?
Matt Jones
30.
Caller Justin
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Gonzaga maybe is better than I thought. I'm with you. I think. I think they go three and two in these last five games, but I think North Carolina just lost one of their stars or something. Didn't one of their star players just out for the season or something?
Matt Jones
Who?
Drew Franklin
I don't know. I thought I heard him say that last night. Jay Billis was talking about it. Gonzaga, North Carolina.
Matt Jones
Oh, yes. Seth Trimble. He broke his arm lifting weights. Did you read that story?
Shannon Ryan
I didn't. I saw it. Weight room mouth said like.
Matt Jones
It said like something. The bench or whatever collapsed and then collapsed on his arm and broke it.
Drew Franklin
That's what it was.
Caller Dustin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
That looked. That's. That seemed awful.
Shannon Ryan
Yeah. The headline I saw was vague, but.
Matt Jones
It suggested that there's four people to lift off of him, whatever it was that fell on his arm.
Show Producer
Why is a basketball player lifting that much weight anyway?
Drew Franklin
I don't know.
Show Producer
Football player.
Matt Jones
But I mean, if it takes four bass, four guys to lift it off of you, that's weights. Me too. That's why. Who's up next?
Show Producer
Leave them where they're at, Justin.
Matt Jones
Yeah, who needs to move them? Justin. Go ahead, Justin.
Caller Justin
Two statements and then a question. I've never been to a Louisville Kentucky game till last night. But you said that inside. It wasn't that bad. And I agree, but I was standing outside and probably got five things thrown at me before I even went in the door, so I thought that was crazy.
Matt Jones
Oh, wait a minute. You had people throwing things at you outside?
Show Producer
Yeah.
Caller Justin
Fireball, two Gatorades and two beer cans.
Matt Jones
Well, let me ask you a question, just out of curiosity. Were you saying anything or you were just standing there silently just standing there.
Shannon Ryan
You standing next to a recycling bin? That just sounds like a bunch of trash.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Wow. That's well, I'm sorry you had to deal with that. That's. It feels like a. Feels like a little aggressive on their part.
Caller Justin
And then I thought, obviously always not playing good, and you know that, but like, I thought Louisville took advantage of the matchup problems that we had, and then we never did because, like, Neely couldn't guard anybody on the court, and it just seemed like we didn't put him any.
Matt Jones
And then I think that's a great point. I mean, they would get McNeely. I would have said any time low, Aberdeen or away is one on one with McNeely, clear them out and take him to the basket. And we didn't do that. And I. And I don't know why exactly, because that. That. You're right. You got to take advantage of that when he. If he's going to be in.
Caller Dustin
Yeah.
Caller Justin
And then my question is, it didn't have anything to do with the end result, but do you know why they didn't review the out of bounds in the last minute?
Caller Dustin
It.
Caller Justin
It was a close play and they just never went to.
Matt Jones
I think. I think you have to. I think you have to have a challenge, don't you? Even in the last two. Oh, excuse me. So in the last two minutes, they will review. As I understand it, and I could be wrong about this isn't the new rule. They'll review everything except out of bounds. The out of bounds, you still have to have a challenge because they didn't want to get to what they had last year where they were reviewing every single out of bounds play at the end of game. So I think even in the last two minutes, the ref can initiate a challenge, but on out of bounds, you still have to have the one from. From the game.
Caller Justin
Okay, well, I didn't know they changed that.
Matt Jones
Appreciate the call. Yeah, I mean, I think, because remember last year they were getting the point in the last two minutes, they just reviewed every single play out of bounds, and I think they're getting rid of that. So. So refs can initiate a challenge in the last two minutes, but it has to be like a goal 10 or a charge or something like that. It can't be an out of bounds.
Drew Franklin
And Pope had already used his challenge and lost, so he didn't have any left.
Matt Jones
And what's. What's bad is he uses the challenge, and then I think on the next play, we would have won the challenge. And he used it on the wrong.
Shannon Ryan
One on the one he challenged in real time. I even thought it was Louisville's ball Like, what are you doing? Then we needed one replay to know that they had it right.
Matt Jones
They may have to have somebody just with like a little TV over there looking because he. That ended up being. And that ended up being a big play because literally with a minute left, they might have been able to get that there.
Drew Franklin
I think that would have been a huge turnaround for Kentucky. They were able to had that challenge and win it and get the ball back.
Matt Jones
By the way, sitting there in the first half, this is another thing. It was clear the refs were letting them play. Now in the second half, I thought they called it a lot closer. But in the first half, they were letting them play. And Louisville just was more physical than we were. Like, they. They were on drives to the basket. They were hitting our guys and not getting fouls, and then we weren't hitting them back. You know, we were. We. That. That changed a little bit in the second half. But in the first half, very few foul calls. And I don't think Kentucky match. You got to play to the way the referees are calling the game.
Drew Franklin
That's where Ortega excels. That's his game, man.
Matt Jones
That's true.
Drew Franklin
Taking contact and finishing.
Matt Jones
That's a great point. When he sees that, he should be like, all right, this is my. This is my time. Yeah. And it. I. It's because we. I was sitting. I was actually in the Louisville player family section. What I know it was kind of odd. And one of the players families, I won't say which one, said, they listen to our show every day, said, I actually think you are entertaining.
Drew Franklin
Wiz Khalifa's listening.
Matt Jones
They were. They were the Germans. That's exactly right. We will take a break and come back. We are here at ksbar. It is Wednesday. Dollar Wings come back. Hour two is Kentucky Sports Radio.
Date: November 12, 2025
Hosts: Matt Jones, Drew Franklin, Shannon Ryan
Location: KS Bar & Grill, Lexington, KY
Recapping and analyzing Kentucky's disappointing 96–88 basketball loss to Louisville, focusing on what went wrong, who struggled, moments of hope, and implications for the team's season ahead.
"Our defense... just awful for 30 minutes. Awful. And honestly, in the first half, atrocious." (03:01)
"Doesn't look like the same guy. I don't know if it's something… that went and attacked the basket and drew fouls and all that, we haven't seen that guy yet this year." (03:31) "OA was minus 16. Diabate was like minus 11. I mean always minus 16. When we made the best, the best lineup that was on the floor was low, Aberdeen, Chandler, Williams and either Moreno or Garrison." (06:48)
"They had 20 assists and only six turnovers. We had 14 assists, 14 turnovers. I mean, that's the game right there." (05:24)
"A minus 16 is crazy." (06:46)
"He now does this thing where like he moves it in front of his face… but it seems a lot more kind of... it's worse." (09:45)
"How many times do teams miss seven straight free throws at the end of the game? And we got zero points off of that. That is crazy." (14:00)
Matt is "more disappointed than worried long term" (15:33) and proposes lineup changes:
Shannon and Drew support Aberdeen at the two for offensive balance.
Collective concern over the lack of shooting and how poor spacing has limited Oweh’s ability to drive.
Questions about Kentucky’s defensive game plan and why they repeatedly went under screens.
"One of these two guys [Diabate or Garrison] is ended up on the bench because I don’t think those two dudes... can play together." (28:23)
The conversation was candid, analytical, and sometimes self-deprecating/frustrated. The hosts combined good-natured banter with sharp basketball insight and honest criticism of Kentucky’s performance.
This episode provided an unfiltered, thoughtful review of Kentucky’s tough loss to Louisville, combining on-court analysis with coaching critiques, lineup debates, and lighter moments about the game environment and fan experiences. The panel expressed disappointment in individual performances and strategic choices, while remaining broadly optimistic about the team’s long-term potential, pending lineup changes and player growth. The upcoming Michigan State game will be an important test and an opportunity for Kentucky to reset and respond.
