This is Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome everyone. It is Kentucky Sports radio. What Monday, November 17th. Boom. Is that right here live in Orchard Park, New York, just a little bit south of Buffalo in a wonderful neighborhood where we last night got to go to the Buffalo Bills game and had an amazing day. You can give us a shout in the Clark's Pump and Shop phone line. That's 859-280-2287. A vision auto glass text machine is 772-774-5254. And this dishon sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office. If you call TJ he'll make them pay. It has been a great weekend here. We there's been a lot that's happened. We had a foot basketball game Friday, we had a football game Saturday and then we drove to Buffalo. We were here, went to Buffalo Bills Tampa Bay game on Sunday and now we will drive home today. I'm sitting here with Drew Franklin and Billy R. Sports, or as we now call him, Billy R. Veggie. And it is going to be, we're going to be a fun weekend. We got so much we can talk about. So it's hard to know where to start. The basketball team rolls against Eastern Illinois. The football team rolls against Tennessee Tech. And then of course, what happened yesterday. I don't know where to start, Drew. I mean we could kind of go through the timeline. Where, where do you think is the way to go?
Drew Franklin
I mean, I'm most excited to talk Buffalo, but if you want to go chronologically, that would make sense to the basketball win. Basketball needed a good taste after the events earlier in the week, so.
Matt Jones
Well, I also would say to you, if you haven't yet listened the the timeline or the podcast feed has a lot of good material from the weekend. Okay, so you've got, you got the basketball post game show Friday night. You got the football post game show from Geneva, Ohio on Saturday. And then you got Cover Zero, which came out last night. And I would suggest listening to all of those because I think you'd get kind of a timeline of the trip.
Drew Franklin
Which of the COVID Zero football postgame show talked more actual football because they were both limited in their exes and.
Matt Jones
I mean the football, we went into a little of the NFL. I'm not sure how much the Tennessee Tech game we really talked about. It was good show. Yeah. I mean it makes sense to talk about football and basketball, but I do think we have to start with Billy's suitcase. Because I do think that ultimately that's going to be the thing that people take away the most from this trip. Billy, this was your first road trip. First of all, 48 hours on the road with us, you've never gotten to go because of various reasons. Mostly you're almost too valuable to leave because of all your studio ability. Have you enjoyed it? Let's start with that.
Billy R.
I have. It is surpassed my expectations. I've heard horror stories in the past from Shannon the dude, I think, but.
Matt Jones
That'S just because Shannon is like. He just. He just whs like sh. Most people would love to be paid to drive around bed.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Yeah. They would love to sleep on a bed.
Matt Jones
Yeah. But most people would love to drive around. I mean, people who work. This is the. This is the only part. Shannon, I think, is very tuned into the common person. I give him a lot of credit for that. Maybe more so than most people on the show. But the thing that Shannon always gets wrong is the complaint about these road trips. Most people would do who have regular jobs would do anything to get paid to drive around the country and watch games. Yeah, right. But Shannon whines about it and I love that.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
If we want a direct line, I would be.
Matt Jones
It's not about a straight line. Most people would be fine to go in circles. This is the only time I think you really are disconnected with the average person. But, Billy, you, I think, appreciate it a little bit more.
Billy R.
Yeah, absolutely. You know, I'm stuck in that studio so long that it's nice to see and talk to you guys in person and at different events and things like that. You know, it helps that it was only a one day trip. We're not driving to Seattle. I think that was a big part of it. But you splurged on the nice Airbnb.
Matt Jones
This is a really nice Airbnb. I mean, this is probably Drew, if you're talking about where we've stayed. This is top end, wouldn't you think?
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And I know because we're spending the NFL's money. Let's be real. The NFL will spend more money than I heard. That's just kind of how it is.
Drew Franklin
Big budget for a two day trip.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Compared to the normal eight. And even I know, to give you.
Matt Jones
An example, I get $5,000 for the week to go to Seattle and back. We had $5,000 just to come to Buffalo for two days. There's a little bit of a difference in budget.
Drew Franklin
And even though Billy is appreciative, I will say this Being Billy's first. That's no ordinary bunk bed up there. That's like a king sized bunk bed.
Matt Jones
You did get the luxury trip. This. Everybody got their own room. That doesn't usually happen.
Drew Franklin
My first couple trips, they were nice. That just wasn't a bed. We just had to figure it out. I had to.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So.
Drew Franklin
But.
Matt Jones
But really, I think this trip, surprisingly, has been centered around you and your experience more than I would have thought. I mean, this is. Drew and I. I thought we. They be. Would be us on the NFL, getting to work for the NFL. This really. This trip was made. Shannon, the day he got in the car, in my house, at my house, ready to go, and he brought out a veggie tray. It was a surprise, Shannon, to everyone.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
That I know, you guys are normal, normally eating nerd gummy clusters. And then he brings in the healthy part of it. He's got.
Matt Jones
He brings in a veggie tray. He brings in broccoli, celery, carrots. And from then on, it was just on. It was a veg. The car smelled like broccoli the rest of the trip, which is not a. It's not a pleasant smell. Closed area.
Annabe Sofa Advertiser
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And that was an interesting decision by you.
Billy R.
Well, look, I mean, I. I'm somebody that doesn't eat a ton of processed foods. I want to keep you.
Matt Jones
Well, that was processed vegetables. Those were not. Those were packets.
Billy R.
Well, look, regardless, it's. It's good to eat your vegetables. You know, when you have a 20 a week paycheck, you got to get those two for six vegetable trays. And I. I am very surprised where you guys's reaction to the veggie tray. I mean, that was something you guys ate.
Odoo Software Advertiser
All of.
Billy R.
All the carrots were gone very quickly, so, I mean, I feel like you were talking out both sides of your mouth a little bit there this week.
Matt Jones
It was not. No, no, no, no. It was not that. It was. First of all, it was considerate to bring anything. Drew, he didn't want to bring anything, did he?
Drew Franklin
No, not all he. And he said it right there in the middle, like, everyone, help yourselves.
Matt Jones
It was one of these no good deeds go unpunished because the moment it happens. First of all, don't blame me. They did it. Mario and Drew, I did not tweet anything.
Drew Franklin
Okay? I tweeted. Hand up.
Matt Jones
I tweeted.
Drew Franklin
I did not expect over 100 replies and 200,000 views and just turning into a full row.
Matt Jones
I didn't do anything. I was going to give you a hard time about it, but I didn't realize the public was gonna have such a visceral reaction to it.
Billy R.
Yeah, act like they don't ever eat broccoli or something. Like, I mean, I thought it was delightful.
Matt Jones
First of all, you use words like delightful. That's. That's not a word that gets used a lot on this show. Delightful.
Billy R.
Well, neither is the suitcase that I brought.
Matt Jones
But really the crowning achievement was the suitcase Billy brought. And if you, if you listen to postgame show we get into more detail it. But it was a hard shell plastic case suitcase that I thought, I thought when Bill Clinton became president they took all of those out of commission. I thought they basically just said, okay, this was a good era.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
It's like the penny just went extinct.
Matt Jones
It was like the penny. That's exactly right. They were like, okay, it's had a good run. We're moving on. But Billy brought it back. The hardcore plastic suitcase. As one person said, it's historic. It survived the sinking of the Titanic. I mean it was from a different generation. That I think is what really set the Internet on fire was your orange. Interesting color to orange. Hard plastic suitcase.
Billy R.
Well, there's not a lot of wear and tear on it either. So you know that thing is going to be around much longer than we are. It's. It works well. Got all my clothes in.
Matt Jones
It probably has some sort of carcinogen that will give you. Give you a disease.
Billy R.
Easy access if I want to put my cigarettes in there. It's practical. It worked.
Matt Jones
And the Internet just took off with it. I mean, the picture of Billy with his orange suitcase will be the thing that lives the longest in this. On this trip.
Drew Franklin
And then Mario didn't do him many favors when he put the old man. They're like doing the exact same pose. I don't know how you found that photo, but it's like it was Billy 50 years ago.
Odoo Software Advertiser
Yeah.
Billy R.
Photoshop Mario in the car in minutes after this was done. Comparing me to the 1920s, man, I.
Matt Jones
Like, you know, I'm big on in KSR the rivalries and you know, there's been. There's been a big Billy Shannon rivalry over the years. There's sort of an alpha of the pre show rivalry. You both kind of talk trash about the other one when they're not there and. But you still like each other. But there's a new emerging Billy Mario rivalry. I think Billy, I think Billy does not like that Mario. I think he thinks Mario takes, gives him. I think he understands you and I are going to Give him hard time. But he doesn't like when Mario does things like that. There's a. I think Billy thinks there's a pecking order. He and Shannon are kind of fighting for spot four. I'm not would Mario ever jumps to spot four. That really makes Billy mad. And I think this, this was an example of that.
Billy R.
Mario McRib over here.
Matt Jones
See, again, he tries to shift it. He tries to shift it over onto Mario. And I like, I like watching that.
Drew Franklin
Well, last night the three of us stayed up pretty late playing pool and we might have enjoyed a couple beers. And their tight. Their trash talking started getting intense. And at one point I'm standing leaning on the kitchen counter and I put my stick out and separated them. I was like, you on this side, you on that side.
Matt Jones
It's fun to watch these two. These two have some. These two have some heat. Billy and Mario brewing. I feel like for a while it has been brewing.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Just start on this trip.
Matt Jones
It has been brewing. There is definitely a Billy Mario, but.
Drew Franklin
I will say each other, but there's a lot of back and forth at the pool table.
Matt Jones
I'm going to say this, Billy, I think you're overall sort of on the KSR pecking order. Like if approval rating. I think it's been improved this weekend. I think the general fan has grown some affinity for you this week. They always saw you as that kind of hardcore, always mad, hanging up on Heather. You know that one, that would. That one set you back a little bit. This has been the equivalent for you of the Theo Vaughn interview for Trump. Right. Like this is helping your approv a little bit. And I think, I think you should be happy about this. The plastic suitcase and the veggie tray, I think especially women are like, they kind of feel bad for you and I think that's helping. Okay.
Drew Franklin
Do you agree? I do. And I think if. If it was just the suitcase or just the broccoli, we'd keep making fun of you.
Matt Jones
But he's. Now that's the confidence.
Drew Franklin
But then you also, I mean, pile on a little bit here. But he was very dressed up for the game.
Matt Jones
Okay, so let's talk about the dress up thing. That's another thing.
Drew Franklin
Everything was complimentary with Billy.
Matt Jones
Let me just say, Billy, the veggie tray and the plastic suitcase, I think were. Were reasonable ways to make fun of you. I do think you got a raw deal on the dressing for the bills. So Shannon, he dressed really well, actually. Like, whereas me and Drew and Mario had on hoodies. Kind of our Regular look. Billy had on a pea coat.
Drew Franklin
I complimented that for you.
Matt Jones
He had on a pea coat. He had on a quarter zip. He had nice pants and dress shoes. I thought he looked really good. And, you know, I'll give Billy a hard time over anything, but I genuinely thought he looked really good. He looked like a guy who was dressing for the job he wants, not necessarily the job he has.
Billy R.
What's he want?
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
The. The GM job?
Matt Jones
Well, I think he's like to be. I mean, I. Let me. You tell me wrong. You'd love to be, like, an NFL reporter. Like, Jeff Darlington was there. You started geeking out a little bit. You'd like to be Jeff Darlington. Is that fair? No. Hold on.
Drew Franklin
I got the Tampa beat. I don't even know his name, but Billy beelined and talked to what's his name?
Odoo Software Advertiser
Brick.
Billy R.
Str.
Drew Franklin
Crowd.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you kind of. You were geeking out a little bit, the way Mario did with Kevin Harlan at the NCAA tournament. You kind of were like that with these NFL.
Billy R.
Well, look, I was. I was in my element. I mean, I got Darlington's number. He's right.
Matt Jones
I don't think yet. I think you want it to be your.
Billy R.
Well, yeah, you Dr. Like you said, you dress for the job you want, not the one that you have. My shoes took way too many shots online.
Matt Jones
So we post the picture of all of us, and I think, objectively, you look better than all of us. I think you look the most professional of all of us yet. Just went at you specifically your shoes, because one person said you look like they're Dick Van Dyke shoes, which, Shannon, is a funny lie to be great. He said he looked like Dick Van Dyke. Who? You didn't even know who that was.
Billy R.
I didn't know who it was, but I knew. I could feel it through the tweet.
Matt Jones
That it was not complimentary, felt the tone.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Look at Billy's pants. He's even got, like, slacks on those.
Matt Jones
They're ironed. They have a pleat. I mean, they're very nice. So I just want to say I feel like the making fun of you for the outfit, I think isn't fair because I actually think you. You dressed really well for the game, but the combination of the plastic suitcase and the veggies and then the Dick Van Dyke shoes, it's just been. It's a whole personality.
Billy R.
So let me go back for a second. You think my approval rating has gone up because people feel bad?
Matt Jones
Yes, I do. I do. Genuinely. I think there is a sympathy, but I think that's good because I think you had no sympathy. It's a charm because. Because everyone that's involved with his show has had vulnerability. Okay. Like I've had health issues. Right. I've been fired. Ryan has had his issues in his personal life. Drew lost a friend recently. You know, Shannon lost. Which was your grandmother's name.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Nanny.
Matt Jones
Yeah, nanny. So we've all had these issues where we've shown vulnerability. You've really never had that. Like, when you're on the air, you're always being mean to somebody. You hate kids, you know? So I think this was the first time people got to see a softer side of Billy.
Billy R.
And what did you guys think? I mean, you spent time off the.
Matt Jones
Air with I like you. I find you. I think the role you have taken in this whole cover 0 the new in it's the news. I think it's a good role for you. Don't you?
Drew Franklin
Yeah. And to the thing about him wanting the job, we were. Were we the first three people to check in? I mean, we were there very early in the press.
Matt Jones
We were, yeah. You over there.
Drew Franklin
And then like he's already networking as people are walking in like that Tampa guy. Even just the media people working at the bill.
Matt Jones
Billy was.
Drew Franklin
Was clocked in to take advantage of this opportunity to make the most of it.
Matt Jones
I think you, first of all, you've done a great job with all these extra gigs, but I think you have now found a role. And I think it's gonna be plastic suitcase Dick van dyke shoe guy.
Drew Franklin
Well, now the Internet's doing more of them. Come on. At Kev Miller 7, they've got you.
Matt Jones
Working as a train porter.
Drew Franklin
That one's just gonna have to stick.
Matt Jones
Billy, some of you, I think it's just gonna stick. I think you're just gonna have to let it go.
Drew Franklin
We got your back on the outfit.
Matt Jones
I even complimented. I thought you looked good on the outfit.
Billy R.
Well, if.
Drew Franklin
I mean, Mario didn't pack a coat and we were tailgating in 30 degree weather.
Billy R.
That's true. And he gets zero criticism online for anything.
Matt Jones
See, now there's the rivalry again. I have to put the Q stick between you all.
Drew Franklin
I'm go get it.
Matt Jones
I'm getting the. There's the rivalry. 772, 774, 5254. Welcome back. It is Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-280-2287. By the way, the couple of you riding, saying, why don't you get to the games? This, obviously, this. You. This may not be the show for you. I'm just gonna tell you we're on the road. If you've never been a part of KSR road trip shows, this is this what's gonna be on our way to St. John's here in a few weeks. Like, that's just. That's just what it is. One person writes, Matt, Billy dressed and took a suitcase as if he wanted to work for Don Draper at the Mad Men Advertising.
Billy R.
If I'm known for being well dressed, eating vegetables, and taking my job seriously, I'll.
Matt Jones
Yeah, exactly. What's there to be. What's there to be embarrassed about right now?
Billy R.
The style could get a little better.
Matt Jones
With the way to look at it, though. I actually think your style was your best part of your. I like that somebody put our. Somebody put our pictures up with what social media it. He was Mario was TikTok, Drew's Twitter. I was Facebook. I don't feel like that's fair. And you were LinkedIn, which I think that's probably true. All right, so let's talk a little bit about. We will talk about a couple of the sport events. Let's talk about basketball. Kentucky runs over eastern Illinois it was like 12 to 2 right off the start. Never, never a game. Good to see them play well, good to see them score easily to start the game, play defense. I mean, I don't know how much you get out of Eastern Illinois, but you. They did exactly what you would want them to do, right?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, Yeah. I mean, it doesn't erase the Louisville game, but you needed to go out and pummel somebody to just get back on track. That's what they did. Diabate had a huge game, like 20 and 11 or 12, just all around. Great performance as you, you know, with that cloud of low still hovering around, it's good to see him go out and play a game.
Matt Jones
You just wanted to get out there and see them hit their peak, See Aberdeen run the point. Yeah. To me, there was nothing to complain about, which is why I think so many people focused on Pope's post game comments. You know, do you feel like the U of L, I mean, part of this is. I know when we say, will things stick? Part of it depends on will we keep talking about it. So I understand that, like, it's a little bit hard to say, well, it will or it won't stick because we actually probably control some of that, unfortunately. But, you know, we still don't know what happened. After the U of L locker room, he. And then Pope comes out, he makes some weird Taylor Swift reference, which I didn't really understand about. You know, we're going to keep people guessing. And then he, when he got on the radio, he addressed a little bit more. He said that the way they do things is they get people worked up, they get their game ready by flipping the switch and turning on the energy. And he said, maybe we flipped it too early, an hour and a half early. I still don't really know what that means, and I still don't really think it answers the question. But what do you think?
Drew Franklin
His three press conferences, counting, like radio with Rob and then the two press conferences since Louisville, I think have been very weird. I've even like texted friends, like, well, that was weird.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
I think it's obvious at this point he didn't have him ready. I mean, we knew that when we watched the game, but now he's even admitting that they just, they weren't ready for a rivalry game. But I just think it's so weird that he's like teasing this story. Even said something to the crowd and rup, like, I might do this from time to time, throw something out there and let you all speculate. Like, no, you can't do that.
Matt Jones
Don't do that.
Drew Franklin
That's a. That's a bad idea. Especially in a week. You just got whooped by Louisville.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Like, people want some answers and have some concerns about.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I mean, I think anytime you're. You're screwing around with the fan base, you're making a mistake. Unless it's like. Like, if you beat Louisville and you want to screw around with them, that's fine. But when you lose to Louisville, I just think that's a mistake for. I mean, everyone I've talked with, that's what they want to know. What happened in the locker room? What happened in the locker room. And I think you're going to keep getting that. And if you were to lose tomorrow night to Michigan State, then the. What happened in the locker room is going to be like a. Did it ruin the season in the locker room? And as. And he said it's not as big a deal as everybody acts like, which I'm sure is true. But that's why you don't do this, because people are going to speculate and think it's probably worse than it is.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Even though I don't know anything, I'm convinced that if we ever found out, we would be like, that's it. You did all that. And that's what it was.
Matt Jones
So the comments.
Drew Franklin
Well, I think fans are fair and worrying because we still talk about team turmoil 20 years later.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
And problems with that Oscar team. We don't want a team that we love to have problems on November 11.
Matt Jones
You know, and the tough part is, like, now, I mean, we're hearing so much stuff and we. And even me, like, I don't totally know what to put.
Billy R.
Believe.
Matt Jones
I mean, there are. There are now like six different stories floating out there.
Drew Franklin
And that's the problem.
Matt Jones
And I don't know which one. I mean, I know the couple that I think, like. Like I've heard some ridiculous ones. Like, I do not believe that there was a religious argument in the argument before. Like, that one is online. That the players got into a fight about religion before the game. How in the world. And it seems like that one is what people believe online. How could they believe that? You really think there was an argument about. About God in the locker room before the game at the Louisville? Game at the Louisville. Like, that's when they decided to do it. By the way, we're about to walk out there. Which book of the Bible do you think is that? Like, you. That couldn't have. Like, that was. That's not that could have happened.
Drew Franklin
No, I don't know how that would. Got legs to be.
Matt Jones
I do think one that's. That I think is. Is. Is that maybe. And I wish he would just say this. There is some talk out there that Mark Pope was uncharacteristic in the locker room and it threw the guys off, maybe taking it almost so seriously that people were like, yo, dude, what? Who's this guy? And that one is starting to pick up some steam. And that's one I think could be right. It would make. Because it would explain everything else. It would explain why Jalen Lowe and those guys were getting into it with the fans. You know, it would explain. It would explain a lot. And it kind of hinted at. He took the blame himself. Remember, he was like, I did this too quickly. That to me, of all the explanations, is the one that actually makes the most sense to me.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I mean, he's coached a lot of games here in that one one season already, but that was his first. I'm going into Louisville road rivalry game. It's the third game of the year. The way I'm just taking everything in and running through my filter, it seems that he did just not have them ready for the situation at all.
Matt Jones
Maybe called out some guys that were like, why are you calling me out? Like. Like that? That to me, Billy seems like that makes some sense now.
Billy R.
What do you think is more likely now that it's addressed by Pope or it's never talked about again by him?
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, I think he could probably get away with the never talking about it if we beat Michigan State and we go on a run, but if we start losing, he's gonna be talking about it all year.
Drew Franklin
People are gonna worry about locker room.
Matt Jones
People are gonna worry about if we beat Michigan State and then we beat Carolina or whatever. Then, yeah, he could probably not talk about it, but if we start losing, he's not going to be able to not talk about it.
Billy R.
We'll talk about it forever.
Matt Jones
So we'll see. I think it was a bad mistake. We'll take a break, do some football. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call tj. He'll make him pay.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage, here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
The song would be better for this if it was a plastic bag, but still a good pick. Shannon, I appreciate it. One person writes Matt, I' Billy's my favorite now because he doesn't care what other people think. That's not true. These. You're having to get used to getting These comments, like Drew and I, we've gotten these for 20 years. But you haven't gotten the sort of hard takes like you have this one. You're having to get used to it in real time.
Billy R.
Yes. But I can take it mentally now. Like when I first started, I would read everything and take it personally. Now I've, you know, you're doing this for content. I can. It's hard in the bigger scheme of things, bigger picture.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it is hard. Like you forget. We forget that like people are mean, you know, I mean they are. They're not like they're giving you a hard time on this, but some people are like, people can be mean. You know, people have been mean to the girl Olivia who, who's done videos for us because they could just keep saying she's a Louisville fan, which she was. Then she went to uk so now she's a Kentucky fan. But like people are people. And like she's like it. People are quiet. She's like, why are people me? Like most 99% of our fans are great, but we have a percent of fans who are just mean. And I don't know why they do that. Now on this case though, with the plastic suitcase, they should be be.
Billy R.
Well, you just wait till I brushed out the charcuterie board in the car later today.
Matt Jones
One person writes, billy looks like he's ready to jump out of the plane with DB Cooper.
Drew Franklin
We checked the. Inside that bag cut open the fabric. Might be some stuff.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that might be one of those.
Billy R.
It is like, I don't know. Vintage was the word that I use. There's claps in there and like weird pockets.
Matt Jones
Speaking of vintage, Micah Johnson. Oh yeah. If I told you that Micah Johnson was still playing football, Shannon, would you have believed it?
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
No, there's no.
Drew Franklin
Well, he is.
Matt Jones
He won his third Canadian Gray cup this weekend. 37 years old, he is a five time all CFL team including this year. He is the eighth oldest player that wasn't a kicker to play in the Canadian Football League. And he won his third title. Micah Johnson. Who would have ever imagined? Micah Johnson is still playing football and still, I mean he feast out. He was played in the 20002007 Music. 2005 Music City Bowl.
Drew Franklin
He was in high school when I was in high school because he played at Fort Campbell and our teams played. He's got to be pushing right at 40.
Matt Jones
I'm a little older and I'm 30, just turned 38. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Okay. Yeah. I remember watching him at Fort Campbell.
Matt Jones
Like that's crazy. That he's still playing.
Drew Franklin
So congrats to mike2004, Mr. Football ish around there. That's nuts.
Matt Jones
Probably about right.
Drew Franklin
Still cash and checks in Canada.
Matt Jones
I mean, when I saw that, I was like, this has to be an old story. But it wasn't. He's still playing.
Billy R.
And not just cash and checks.
Matt Jones
Winning championships and being all cfl.
Drew Franklin
He's gonna be like a cfl. He already is legend. Yeah.
Matt Jones
By the way, Dick Van Dyke is alive and turns 100 years old next month.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Yeah. That's gonna be the KSR curse.
Matt Jones
Oh, man. If Dick Van Dyke dies, RIP Dick Van Dyke, it'll be your fault. No, no, no, no. It'll be your fault. If Dick Van Dyke passes. Passes away, it is on you.
Billy R.
No, no, no, no.
Matt Jones
Yes. It's on you. In that suitcase. Football destroyed. Destroyed. Tennessee Tech wasn't even a game. Everybody was all worried, all 10. And oh, they're going to come in. Really was never close. They had one good draft the entire game. That was it. Otherwise, Kentucky and Kentucky basically moved the ball whenever they wanted. You had to like that performance.
Drew Franklin
Loved it. Bowley, would he have three incompletions? He's up there. High 60s. I think he's fifth in the SEC in completion percentage right now. Kendrick Law with a huge game. I wish we could get more. Kendrick Law didn't do much earlier in the year they started getting the ball. I think he's had like game highs the last three weeks. He had over 100 yards this time. So it's just good seeing that offense roll and the defense just kept doing what it does.
Matt Jones
They were great. I mean, they were great. The. What you think of the cutter? Bowling, knocking the guy down while he was running. Did you like that?
Drew Franklin
Loved it. Yeah, we haven't. I guess Lev has had that, but you don't see that very often from your quarterback. Even Stoops wasn't like, I don't love that he did it, but after he did it, that brought a.
Matt Jones
Probably don't want to do it against Tennessee Tech, but you still got a lot juiced up.
Drew Franklin
The whole team.
Billy R.
Yeah. You don't want to drop the throwing shoulder too often, but I think transfer portal players take notice of something like that. And he is the future of Kentucky. It's been a fun few weeks with him.
Matt Jones
It has been. And I think, you know, if it ends up being the case that we have Mark Stoops as a coach again next year, the reason there might be any excitement is him. Right? I mean, that's going to be A big part of it, yes.
Drew Franklin
Someone wake up the marketing department this spring and put him everywhere you have to fill seats. You cannot be an SEC team and have a season without a sellout like they did this year with those teams that came in. You have to sell tickets. And he's your. He's your key to selling tickets.
Matt Jones
I mean, we'll have this talk if he ends up coming back, but they've got to re. Like everything they did this offseason to market the team, they got to do the opposite because they did a horrible job this year. Just an absolutely horrible job. Now, if they get a second chance at it, and I still don't know that that's going to happen, although I think now he's not going to get. We've said that 5 and 7 was purgatory. I still think it's purgatory for the fan base. I don't think he gets fired at 5 and 7. But I also don't think you can just run everything back the same at 5. So, like, it's, you know, it's kind of. It's a purgatory. But if they bring him back, they've got to ch. And you're right, they've got to change the way they do everything. And Cutter Bowley will have to be the center of it. He just will because he is excited. He's exciting to me. I mean, I mean, just the kid is so energetic, and he doesn't make stu. He makes very few bad decisions. You know, I mean, he'll make one or two here and there, but in general, I just. I really like him a lot.
Drew Franklin
Teammates seem to love him. Yeah, I mean, they'll have to go all in on him as the face.
Matt Jones
And he won't leave. I'm confident now there are guys we're going to have to use a phrase from the past. Pony up to keep. He'll be one of them. But they'll get him. He'll be here next year. I kind of think no matter what.
Drew Franklin
With where he finished his high school career and those boosters around Lexington, I think any. Any offer he got would get matched to keep him home. I mean, we know how big they were in recruiting. If of everybody keeping around within the nil era. And I don't think the powers of Lexington would let that kid get out of the state.
Matt Jones
So let's do a percentage game. Percentage chance we beat either Vandy or Louisville or both. But, but, but, but since Chance we get one of them and we go to a bowl game. Billy 40%. 40%. So less than 50% we win one.
Billy R.
Correct.
Matt Jones
Okay. Shannon, I was going to go 40.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
I'll go slightly higher. I'll say 45%.
Matt Jones
45.
Drew Franklin
Drew, I will say 31% but I'm.
Matt Jones
I'm still going less than a third chance. We win one of them, I feel confident.
Drew Franklin
But we're going to be more than a touchdown underdog at both.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Drew Franklin
On the road that's still a big task. But you have already upset Auburn as an underdog and Florida is an underdog. I'm feeling good about the Louisville game specifically with.
Matt Jones
You can't be feeling that good if you think there's.
Drew Franklin
Because it's a motivation thing. I don't. I've not watched one second of Louisville football this year. All I know is Miller Moss looks like he's ready to quit the team. So I'm watching them go the wrong direction while we're sitting here talking about our quarterback and all the juice he has. So when we get that Louisville game I think it'll be a big question of which side wants it and what. I've seen a Louisville lately. They are in shambles.
Matt Jones
I don't all of you. I'm really shocked, shocked at Shannon's number.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Why?
Matt Jones
Because Shannon, you've been the most positive guy about this team all year. Yeah, for me this number if you're talking when one of the two, I'm putting it at 60. Well see I don't, I don't win one of these. Yeah, I mean, I mean I look that's still a 40 chance. We don't but you're just telling me when one of them. I mean I think we have a shot to win them both.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
I would put a level game.
Matt Jones
Yeah but I don't. I mean I know you, you're a Vandy guy but like we're only a touchdown underdog. I mean we've been more of an. We were more of an underdog to Florida at home. I mean like if you play this game three weeks ago we're a 17 point underdog to Vandy. It's come down to seven. I, I think you just asked me. We're going to win one of these two games. I will tell you this. If the team that played against Florida plays against Vandy and Louisville will win one of them. Now if it's the team that played against South Carolina will lose.
Drew Franklin
But with Vandy, I worry about all the injuries on the defense. We're pre beat up.
Matt Jones
We are.
Drew Franklin
I'm not surrendering to Vandy by any means, but of the two, I feel much better about Louisville.
Matt Jones
Yeah, well, I think Vandy, I don't, I don't want to say Mandy's a paper tiger. I don't believe that. I think they're good. But Auburn almost beat him. You know, I don't, I don't know. I'm surprised. I thought, I thought, to be quite frank with you, I thought all your numbers are going to be up for fitness. I can't believe I'm the only one that was over 50.
Drew Franklin
I'm playing the little odd. They're going to be more than a touchdown underdog at both on the road. I'm just kind of.
Matt Jones
But I think if you did the math though of those it would still be. It might not be 50. But if you say, well, if you're a touchdown underdog to both, what are the chances you win one? It's probably still probably what Billy said, it's probably 40 if you did that math.
Billy R.
I think, I definitely think the Louisville game is more gettable and there's going to be a lot of motivation to be Vince Merrow in his first year at Louisville. But you know, if they were to.
Matt Jones
Lose loss by the way. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
So I'm talking about press conference was wild.
Matt Jones
I mean Miller Moss blame everyone in U of L world blames him and he blames everybody else.
Drew Franklin
Throw the locker room out like that in a press conference, all the cameras.
Matt Jones
Yeah, yeah, good look.
Drew Franklin
Who do they have this week?
Matt Jones
I would like them to guess something like that. Yeah, yeah, they could.
Drew Franklin
They could be in bad shape.
Billy R.
But if they lose, like if Kentucky were to lose these last two games, I think how they lose to Louisville.
Matt Jones
Would be really important. No, I think with both of them, if they lose, they can't get embarrassed in either of these games. That's the only way. I mean I don't think the fan base is going to be like woo, woo. Regardless if we lose them both. But if we were to get embarrassed by one of them, then you're in a really tough spot. So especially the. But. But there is at least hope in these last two games, which three weeks ago people would not have thought that was true. Right.
Drew Franklin
Oh, there are people on Twitter like I apologize, I was wrong deleting my account. Some of the people that were being the most vicious. It's, it's kind of got a lot of fans confused. They had already checked out completely and it's like wow, this has been kind of now the last few weeks catalyst.
Billy R.
Was get your money up.
Matt Jones
Garrett that would be a man. If they do win one of these games, I mean Calzada will have a completely different legacy at this school. It's kind of an amazing thing. Welcome back, Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-280-2287. Text Machine, 772-7745254. New York Post put out a story yesterday saying as Dick van Dyke approaches, 100 worries about his health.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Oh, no, I'm really worried.
Billy R.
It's not on me.
Matt Jones
That really got brought up on Saturday.
Billy R.
Yeah, this is not on me. It's the Internet commenter.
Matt Jones
No, I think it's on you, Billy. It wasn't the Internet commenter. It was when you look like him.
Billy R.
God forbid somebody wears dress shoes to.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
An NFL event and murders Dick Van Dyke. Good job. I hope you're proud of yourself.
Matt Jones
See, there's the rivalries I love the rivalries between these three. They didn't used to happen. Like we didn't have. There wasn't a Drew Ryan rivalry. No, no. It's only. It's only this new generation. Although Shannon was here before both of you. But. But that's okay.
Billy R.
I love Mario, and I just would like to know where you got his pants, man.
Matt Jones
Yeah, There are people crushing your shoes to Mario, saying you look like. They look like you were about to go frog gigging. They were kind of like work boots. But, you know, I. You guys. I would say, say everybody wanted me. Tonight on ABC is Monday Night Football, but somebody just sent me a schedule, and I want to. You know, I haven't watched network TV in a long time. Like, I don't watch a lot of network TV years. I mean, when I was a kid, I could have told you what was on every night of the week on abc, cbs, fox, NBC. Like, I could have literally told you their schedules every night of the week. Now I don't. So let me just read you what's on besides Monday Night Football and see if you know these shows. Cbs, the Neighborhood. Never heard of it. Dmv.
Drew Franklin
That's a show heard of.
Matt Jones
Show starting. Tim Meadows.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Oh, good for Tim. Hadn't heard from him in a while.
Matt Jones
No. FBI? Are these just government agencies? Pretty general, Watson. All right, there's your CBS lineup. Wow. And we haven't. None of us. You said Chad, you heard any of.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Those FBI and dmv? I have heard of those two.
Matt Jones
Okay. Never watched. I hadn't heard of any. Yeah, the guy, the Neighborhood stars. That's the dude from New Girl. I don't know who the rest of these guys are. All right, now let's go to. Let's go to NBC. St. Denis Medical.
Drew Franklin
Never heard of it.
Matt Jones
Never heard of it. The Paper, now. That's the one from the office. I watched the first two episodes of that on Peacock. I actually think it's pretty good.
Drew Franklin
However, I go to the Peacock app.
Matt Jones
I don't work tv, but the paper's pretty good. I like that.
Billy R.
I've seen a lot of commercials. Never seen it.
Matt Jones
The Voice. I've heard of the Voice. I don't know that I've ever seen it. I've heard of the Voice. Do you know who the music acts are on the Voice right now?
Billy R.
Is it the Maroon 5 singer still?
Matt Jones
Yes. Adam Levine, Reba McIntyre, Snoop Dogg. But he doesn't sing. Why is he on the Voice?
Drew Franklin
So he's a judge?
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Yeah, Entertainment. That's why he's on there.
Matt Jones
That's finally Brilliant Minds.
Drew Franklin
That's old, right?
Matt Jones
All right, how about this on Fox. Didn't know either of these shows were on the air. Celebrity Name that tune.
Drew Franklin
Never heard of it.
Matt Jones
It stars Randy Jackson. That's a no for me, dog. And the woman, the blonde woman from 30 Rock. Okay. Jane something. And then celebrity weakest link.
Drew Franklin
Weakest link still around.
Billy R.
You're the weakest link.
Drew Franklin
Goodbye.
Matt Jones
But it's not. This doesn't star her. This looks to be. Is that the woman from. What was that show? Who. What's she from? I've seen her before. Her name's like maybe. I keep wanting to call her buddy. Jane is Jane Lynch.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, that is. That's the Jane I was thinking of when you said the other Jane.
Matt Jones
No, I'm thinking about the other Jane from 30 Rock that plays the ditzy blonde. Okay. I think she's also named Jane.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
I'm not sure. Jane Lynch. That's her.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Anyway, point being, network tv, that's not quite Seinfeld. You know, Cheers, Seinfeld, Friends. Like that's not quite the same lineup.
Odoo Software Advertiser
I.
Drew Franklin
Hey, I'm surprised I got one. I never ever even look at those channels.
Matt Jones
Yeah, yeah.
Billy R.
Part of it. You got the TV Guide back in the day and you could see the whole lineup.
Matt Jones
Did you subscribe to TV Guy?
Billy R.
I remember TV Guy.
Matt Jones
I love TV Guy. When I was a kid, I really want. Like I thought my parents didn't have TV Guide, so I would sneak and look at it in the grocery store line.
Drew Franklin
I was more of the TV Guide. Such a badass.
Matt Jones
Mad at the Piggly Wiggly. When my grandfather would go shop, I would read Mad magazine and Cracked.
Drew Franklin
Cracked.
Matt Jones
And then I would look at the TV Guide. That's. That's the case.
Drew Franklin
You.
Matt Jones
A lot of kids were committing crimes. That's what I was doing. That's how you. Explains a lot. That explains a lot. The volleyball team won their ninth consecutive SEC championship. Insane. Especially now that Texas is in the league. Ninth consecutive. They're going to end up host probably hosting the. So they've never had an SEC volleyball tournament. That's the first one is next week. We've never had one before. So it's in Savannah, Georgia. So we got to get through that. But assuming that goes well, they're probably going to host through the final four, which. That'll be a big thing for Lexington. But how about the UK Volleyball?
Drew Franklin
Crazy. And not just that one. The league. They went 15 and. Oh. And they've been getting big Turnouts even before this upcoming postseason that they're going to host. I went to that Tennessee game. I know they went out of the way to market that when it was a sellout. But even at the. They went head to head with basketball recently. We had people in the bar wearing volleyball T shirts. They've been. And getting great crowds over there and the team has not let them down.
Matt Jones
So it's exciting. I mean, they got a shot at national championship. I mean, they basically played all the contenders. They beat Penn State on the road. They did lose to Nebraska in Nashville, but they were up two sets to none in that game and they ended up losing. But that's the one seed right now. We would be the number two overall seed.
Drew Franklin
And their other loss was like Pittsburgh.
Matt Jones
Who'S like four or five or something. So, like we played all the good teams. So yeah.
Billy R.
Happy for Craig Skinner. The s first SEC tournament shows the growth of the game that we've seen that they've been, you know, champion in a lot. So I'm excited for it. And we should have some watch parties at the bar for them.
Matt Jones
No, we will. We're definitely going to do that. One person writes who Shannon rooting for Saturday? Van Der Kentucky. It's a great question.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Well, you know, Vandy's got an outside chance of possibly.
Matt Jones
Maybe it's outside, but a shot. Yeah.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
And I mean, I never thought we would even have that conversation in my lifetime. So I feel like I gotta pull for Vanny. But I feel like if Kentucky beats Louisville, you know, Mark Stoops is in still a great situation. He still keeps his job. So that's.
Matt Jones
So just. That's a lot of words to say. You're pulling for Vandy.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
Yeah, that's what I said. What are you gonna. What are you gonna do? What are you gonna do about it?
Matt Jones
My Matt Jones personal rankings you may be dropping with the. Billy's had a big weekend. I mean, Billy's had a big weekend.
Billy R.
Ability scale just up and down, right?
Matt Jones
Yeah, it is actually. You know, Shannon. Shannon has been high and they're like that. Maybe you've passed Shannon with the general.
Billy R.
Oh, I passed him a long time ago.
Stockton Mortgage Announcer
That's great. This is me carrying. This is my caring voice right now.
Matt Jones
Well, number two, hopefully. Luckily there's some distance between these two.

This “road trip” edition of KSR Hour 1 brings Matt, Drew, and Billy together in Orchard Park, NY, just south of Buffalo, after a weekend punctuated by a Kentucky basketball win, a football blowout, and their attendance at the Buffalo Bills game. The hour oscillates between recapping UK sports and poking fun at Billy’s rookie trip quirks, while also providing brief but candid discussions on the state of Kentucky basketball and football teams.
The show is at its best when in road-trip mode: loose, irreverent, and willing to blend sports with insider lore and relatable ribbing. While they hit serious sports topics (notably, the Pope/Louisville drama and football’s postseason fate), the real focus—and fun—centers around personalities, mishaps, and the audience’s evolving affection for Billy R. If you missed this hour, you missed playful banter, genuine squad chemistry, Kentucky sports accountability, and a masterclass in incorporating inside jokes into sports talk radio.
