This is Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome, everyone, to Kentucky Sports Radio, Thursday, February 12th. I'm Matt Jones here at the KS Bar Grill in Lexington, where we'd love to have you come out and see us and have a wing or two or a burger. It is Matt Jones, Ryan Lemon, Drew Franklin Clark's puppet shop phone line. What is it?
Ryan Lemon
7 7, 2.
Matt Jones
That's not it. 879280, 2287.
Ryan Lemon
A vision auto glass text machine is 774-5254.
Matt Jones
That's impressive that you do that. And this edition sponsored by TJ Smith law office. You call tj. He'll make them pay. It is chilly, but still okay outside. I can't really get out of my house because of the ice.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Like, y', all, I don't know if I'm more forgiving of the city of Lexington or what because this, you know, I've been here now couple nights and you know how steep my driveway is?
Ryan Lemon
Pretty steep.
Matt Jones
I, I now understand why people shuffle. I used to just, I, well, I used to just think, well, like, it'll melt. Well, yeah, but then some points, it turns to ice. And then like yesterday when it, when it gets wet, like when it starts to melt, forget it. So to get out of my house and get down that hill so I can't even pull my car up to park it in the garage. Forget that. I'm not, I'm not driving down that hill. I'll slide into the lake, right?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So to get up the hill, I have to park at the. On the street and walk up. But walking up, how do you walk up that hill? So one person in the neighborhood did their driveway.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So I already know what you're doing. I walk up their driveway. I go and I spider man from one house, tiptoe through the grass. And what by Spider Man, I mean I get up against the wall and hold on to something and then move through the thing. And then I get to the other place. And then I, like, almost crawl on my knees to the other house. It's a bad sight. And all I think is, I'm glad nobody's filming because it takes me a good three or four minutes to get from the third house to my house.
Drew Franklin
That's why we shovel.
Matt Jones
But I really am Spider Manning. But I have no other choice. There's no other way for me to get in my house. I don't know what else I'm supposed to do in a hotel.
Ryan Lemon
Would you do, like, bear crawl on the ground? On wet ground?
Matt Jones
I didn't have. If we're being honest, yesterday afternoon, I had to bear crawl because I fell.
Ryan Lemon
Now the true story comes out, and.
Matt Jones
I had to crawl up the ice. But I felt like I was the dude that climbed the building on Netflix. I was, like, poking my holes into the ice.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Yep. Welcome to the reality of living in Lexington. The last few weeks to take my trash out, I've basically been ice skating over to my bins.
Matt Jones
I don't really know what else I'm supposed to do unless I were to walk, like, four blocks around the block, which feels like a huge waste.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, you can't park in front of your house. That's the street. So you got to park behind, walk up that hill.
Matt Jones
Slide. I. I thought about just slide down, but that would be.
Drew Franklin
We do have to give a big shout out to the sun. It has done wonders the last 48 hours. No one has been happier to see the sun than our mayor. I'm a close second. It's done wonders for my neighborhood.
Matt Jones
I saw a pile of snow. Where did I see it? I think it was at UK Football stadium. Have you seen that pile?
Ryan Lemon
I haven't seen it.
Matt Jones
I think when they did the parking lot at UK Football State, there's a pile that has to be 25ft in the air. That one's gonna be here until opening kickoff.
Drew Franklin
There's a pile over. I think it's called the warehouse district. Mirror twin, all that. Over there, the new country boy, they have a pile. And on Instagram, they're taking guesses for the day. It officially. And it has, like, big prize packages, but they've turned it into a game of when will the pile go away?
Matt Jones
Well, this. That. That one at Commonwealth stadium is gonna be there a while, but. But, yeah, anyway, I'm here. And last night, we did the KS Bar. Pick them up. First of all, really good crowd of people came up out here. We had 75 entries into the thing, which is more than I Thought we'd have. So we're going to do it again in a couple of weeks for. For money. I think people enjoyed it. I learned kind of what worked and what didn't. I'd never done it for basketball. Probably gave people too many games. So it was a little hectic. But you know what? I think I got the flow of it.
Shannon
Drew.
Matt Jones
It ended. Shannon, in classic KSR fashion.
Shannon
Of course it did.
Matt Jones
Disaster.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
It's okay.
Drew Franklin
Expect anything less.
Matt Jones
Well, so here was my plan. Let me just tell you what my plan. My plan was. People had 10 games pick in the first half. Everybody did that. The finalists moved to the second half. The second half would all be the games that are on television. Television. So people can watch it, right? And that was six games. But the Yukon Butler game started 30 minutes after the first five. So here's my plan, all right? I narrow from the first half to the second half. We eliminate, like, 30 people. Then at the end each game in the first half, or, excuse me, in the second half, one finalist moves on. Drew, you get 10 finalists. And then they have to. Whatever. They have to predict the end of the UConn Butler game, okay? So that the whole Crowd is watching UConn Butler cheering it on to win the money. You see what my plan is simple enough. Here's where the plan goes awry. Stupid. Cal Berkeley, Syracuse. Now, we were just there, all right? So we, like they should, like me. Cal Berkeley, Syracuse decides to go into double overtime. First of all, what are those teams doing in the same conference? Can you find. Are there two schools in the country, Shannon, in the same conference, farther than Cal Berkeley and Syracuse?
Shannon
Probably not to find it.
Matt Jones
Probably not. That's probably why they didn't want to leave each other.
Drew Franklin
We traveled all this way. Let's play as much as possible.
Shannon
Money's worth.
Matt Jones
So Cal Berkeley in Syracuse goes. Finishes after the Yukon game. So that was. So now I'm like, what are we gonna do? I got these people, they want to win this money from cornbread hemp. What am I going to do? So I had to adjust on the fly. And I had to say to the 10 people that made the finals predict these games that start at 9 and the end at 11. They did, and I have a winner. But we all. I had to sit. I could. I had to send all these people home. Like, we couldn't wait, right? We had to close. You know, we. So. So I have our winners. But people had to leave without knowing the winner, which. I feel bad.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, this one doesn't sound like it was on your fault in the format. The game went crazy, but I wouldn't expect anything different. This is 15 years of US trying to have a contest and everybody was so excited.
Matt Jones
And then. Okay, so 70 people here. 10 finals. How about this? A family comes. Mother, father, son, two daughters. One daughter's 12. Four of the five family members made the finals. Oh, wow.
Drew Franklin
Dad.
Matt Jones
Dad got sleepy and left. He didn't even get to be in it.
Drew Franklin
Dad left him here.
Matt Jones
Let me just say the 12 year old Shannon came in fourth place.
Shannon
Wow.
Ryan Lemon
The 12 year old, one of the first qualifiers was.
Matt Jones
Unfortunately, she said she doesn't get money. I'm sorry, Eloise. You might be sitting at home, like, trying to find out if you want.
Shannon
It's a family of ball knowers.
Matt Jones
That's a family that knows ball. All these people had their science and all this, and this family, like, gets there. So here.
Drew Franklin
I know too much. This sounds like insider trading.
Ryan Lemon
He's a. He's a coach at Lexington Catholic.
Drew Franklin
The dad is. Sounds like a Terry Rosier situation.
Matt Jones
He left.
Ryan Lemon
He left.
Matt Jones
So he didn't get it. All right, so real quick, let me give you the. The top three.
Ryan Lemon
Okay?
Matt Jones
So they're hearing this for the first time.
Drew Franklin
Okay?
Matt Jones
And for those of you coming, you can come by next week. I'll tell you when to get your check. We'll have your. Your money for you. So. But. But I know, I think who you people are. Dana Stevens comes in third.
Ryan Lemon
Okay.
Matt Jones
She was around the top all the time.
Ryan Lemon
She said her name several times.
Matt Jones
She was around the top, by the way. Let me give a shout to Ryan Lemon. Ron Lemon was a finalist. Shannon, he made the finals. He made the final 10 and he was all over the top all night in game after game. You did amazingly well.
Ryan Lemon
Thank you, sir. I know ball. I'm a great handicapper.
Matt Jones
What games did you pick last night?
Ryan Lemon
In the finals?
Matt Jones
Just in general. Name a game. That was one of the ones you picked.
Ryan Lemon
Florida. Georgia.
Matt Jones
There you go.
Drew Franklin
Go.
Matt Jones
Well done. Who?
Ryan Lemon
Bama? Ole Miss.
Matt Jones
All right. See?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Now you see why he was so good, Shane.
Shannon
He didn't use his line for the first time in show history.
Drew Franklin
I was waiting for it.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you didn't say Holiday Express. Good, we're getting it out of your head. So Dana came in third, Avery is second. He'll win $300 and then first place. And he was around the top all night, too. Lee, who came in first place. Congratulations to Lee. Lee, you will win $1,000. So Lee, Avery, and Dana, you'll come by next week and get your checks. And I would say to, to them, congrat, great job, a lot of fun. And now when we do it next time, I'm gonna have it rolling.
Ryan Lemon
I gotta say, you know, I was standing here watching it and Matt was so excited. You know, everybody's kind of on pins and needles. We get right now getting down to it. And when that Cal Syracuse game went into overtime, I thought somebody had punched you in the belly.
Matt Jones
What did not. You know, you have all these. At its core, I'm like way too much of a people please. I don't think you. If everybody thinks, oh, Matt just tries to make people mad for ratings. I want to please people. There's nothing better than seeing the faces on people when you make them happy. So all these people are here, they're all excited and Cal Syracuse just won't end, won't end.
Ryan Lemon
Timeout after time and then I look.
Matt Jones
At my staff and they're sitting over there, they're like, I want to go home.
Ryan Lemon
They were all sitting in the back.
Matt Jones
They were all sitting at the back table like, oh, in.
Ryan Lemon
Wrap it up, Matt.
Matt Jones
So. But, but it did. But still it did.
Ryan Lemon
But everybody standing around, they were so anxious. It really got anxious and exciting there towards the end trying to see who those 10 finalists were and how they're going to win the big money.
Matt Jones
Two lessons from the game. Real quick. Number one, this Vegas is good.
Ryan Lemon
Very good.
Matt Jones
Vegas is good. There were three times that there was a multi person tie for closest in a game. And I'd be like, oh, well, that's what the spread was.
Ryan Lemon
Yep.
Matt Jones
There were some people that just picked the spread and for at least two games it worked. So the Vegas is good. Second, the more you know about the team, the worse you did in the game. The games people got the most correct. Shannon were like Wofford Samford because they didn't have any knowledge.
Jim
Right.
Matt Jones
But then everybody out thinks themselves for Alabama Ole Miss. I mean, we had a couple people pick Travis Perry as the leading score. Come on.
Drew Franklin
Were they related to Travis?
Shannon
The only player they knew.
Matt Jones
Exactly.
Ryan Lemon
So anyway, it was a lot of fun though.
Matt Jones
A lot of fun. And thank you for coming out.
Ryan Lemon
Sure. I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed you getting anxious there towards the end.
Matt Jones
You like that?
Ryan Lemon
That's what makes these KSR contests good, is when they kind of go frustrated. You get so frustrated. Like we were, Jennifer and I were sitting there talking about. Because so many times you said, okay, this is what we're going to do. Okay, this is what we're going to.
Matt Jones
Do because I had to keep adjusting.
Ryan Lemon
You had to keep adjusting five minutes. Okay, this is what we're going to do.
Matt Jones
Yeah, well, sometimes you had to try to do what we're going to do. What is Kentucky going to do Saturday when we go to Gainesville? Probably the hardest game on the schedule all year.
Ryan Lemon
You know I didn't get to keep up with the game all night in Georgia game. But they're so good. Those bigs are.
Matt Jones
They were up 10 nothing right away and there's.
Ryan Lemon
Those bigs are just so big and physical and good. I mean I worry about Malachi and Brandon and Yellow bitch, see if they can handle those are. They're Florida's big guys so if they can kind of match them up, match up pretty well, we may have got a chance. But I don't, I don't see it happening.
Matt Jones
That's not very confident. What Aberdeen returns to his former stomping ground.
Drew Franklin
That's big. I hope he plays well. Ryan's right about Florida's front court though.
Matt Jones
I don't know.
Drew Franklin
I don't remember one like this. They had 72 pain points against Alabama. It's a week and a half ago. They've got an A version of Oscar. He's getting. He leads the SEC and rebounds by over three rebounds and he's second the country. I think he had 20 last year but he's just one of three big guys that they have. I don't think we're going to win and I think Florida is a as peaking and they're ahead of everyone else kind of by a wide margin with that front court.
Matt Jones
But we have Brandon Garrison.
Drew Franklin
That's right.
Matt Jones
We have yellow Malachi Diabate. I mean this is a show me game for those guys. It is, right? Like this is a show me game. I mean who, who do we put on the guy that's the Oscar like guy.
Ryan Lemon
Debate may be the best matchup but you know he doesn't start when comes up the bench.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean but you're probably gonna have.
Drew Franklin
I mean you've got Condon and I mean they, they're a problem.
Matt Jones
They are a problem but we're a problem.
Drew Franklin
That's right. I mean they're beatable.
Matt Jones
We're a problem too. Mario, don't let him say that.
Drew Franklin
They just killed Texas A M at Texas A M and I think Texas A M is good but we have.
Matt Jones
18 of 9 and we don't duck any smoke. Shannon, why are these guys so negative? Why can't we be positive about this?
Shannon
I mean, they can.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Shannon
They won at Tennessee.
Matt Jones
You didn't think we were going to win at Tennessee?
Ryan Lemon
I didn't.
Matt Jones
You didn't think we were going to win at Arkansas?
Ryan Lemon
I didn't.
Matt Jones
I picked this to win both those games by double digits, so I don't.
Ryan Lemon
Remember it that way.
Matt Jones
Pull the tape.
Ryan Lemon
I do think we have an advantage in the backcourt. I mean, Boogie Flan and that Lee kid for them. I think our guys kind of match up pretty well with them. With them.
Matt Jones
I agree.
Drew Franklin
They were both awesome last night against Georgia.
Matt Jones
Okay. Again, I'm just telling you Florida looks.
Drew Franklin
Like a unit right now. I mean, they look like a problem for.
Matt Jones
They may look like a unit. We are a unit.
Drew Franklin
I'm not saying we're definitely going to lose. I'm just saying they are way above everyone else in the conference.
Matt Jones
Y' all are way too negative. This is Kentucky, Florida, and we have won eight of nine.
Drew Franklin
They're the defending national champion.
Matt Jones
That's what they want. That's what they want you to.
Shannon
Just a couple weeks ago.
Matt Jones
Barely remember our last.
Shannon
They got destroyed at home against Auburn just a couple of weeks ago.
Drew Franklin
So there we go. Look at that.

I see you there. Shannon 859-280-2287 Text Machine 772-7745-2541 Person writes Matt Jeff Goodman says Kentucky's gonna get run by 30 off the court. Then he should hang out with these two. Shannon, me and you. Yeah, we will be more positive during our thing.
Shannon
We're going to run Florida out of their own building. We're going to do.
Matt Jones
That's what, that's what we're going to do.
Ryan Lemon
I guess we haven't learned a lesson. I mean, they did go into Tennessee and one. They did go into Arkansas and when they come from behind, they, you know, we. When are we going to learn our lesson? This team has a lot of heart and a lot of fighting them.
Matt Jones
We've also won six straight in the swap. Yeah. Wow, that's a pretty. It's kind of amazing, our run in these road environments. We've won six straight in the swamp. We've won three straight in Tennessee and what, five of the last six in our. In our road environments against teams that are considered our rivals, we've oddly done really well.
Shannon
Well at Arkansas over the last several years.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I agree. I think only one lost once in the last four or five at Arkansas.
Drew Franklin
We've only lost to Florida twice since 2018. And that's survival.
Matt Jones
That's a good team and a team we usually play. I mean, last year they won the.
Drew Franklin
National championship and they lost in Lexington.
Matt Jones
We only played them once last year, but most of the time we've played them twice. So that's a pretty good run. So again, all the more reason to be confident.
Drew Franklin
I don't think. I'm not on the Jeff Goodman path of getting smoked by 30. I just think Florida playing at home, they've been on the road a few games winning those. I just think they're much better than a lot of all the teams in the sec really. But not a necessarily blowout.
Matt Jones
One person writes. Matt, you gotta ask Ryan about his creepy cameos he's making.
Ryan Lemon
I had a little, you know, put a little out there. I've do some Valentine's cameos for you if you wanted one. So there's been a couple that I've done that have.
Matt Jones
So wait a minute. You people can get you to give a message to their woman?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, I think I've done like four or five of them.
Matt Jones
And what do you say?
Ryan Lemon
I say, you know, Valentine's Day is for lovers.
Matt Jones
So people are now paying you to do that.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
And. And usually they'll say, make it as creepy as possible.
Matt Jones
They say that too, huh? Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
My instructions.
Matt Jones
So with permission. I don't even want to know what you're doing. So it's one of these gone public. Is that why this person knows that.
Ryan Lemon
Maybe he ordered one or for his.
Matt Jones
So people can go to cameo and get you to say something to their. To their woman.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
As. Or a woman could get you to say it.
Drew Franklin
Very true.
Ryan Lemon
Yes. Yes.
Matt Jones
I. That's hard for me to imagine that that would be well received. I Feel like that's when Homer got Marge a bowling ball.
Caller Jerry
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Abby's pretty fun and up for fun stuff like that, but I think if I got her a Ryan Lemon cameo for Valentine's, that might be a couch night for me.
Ryan Lemon
She would love it. She would love.
Matt Jones
How many have you done?
Ryan Lemon
I think I've done four or five of the Valentine's ones.
Matt Jones
You used to be big into cameo, didn't you? It was a good. It was a good money maker for.
Ryan Lemon
You during COVID It was, but I think it's kind of one, like, it's kind of just kind of slowly disappearing, like, my space. It kind of slowly fades from our public conscious.
Matt Jones
It's like MySpace. Okay. Yeah. I. I used to do. I got during COVID where I had so many requests, I ended up, like, I couldn't even do it.
Ryan Lemon
I remember you saying that.
Matt Jones
And it was a good little source of money. I haven't done it in years. They keep writing me and ask me to come back, and I just forget.
Ryan Lemon
It was good during COVID We're stuck at home. You know, you can do that. Just kind of entertained.
Matt Jones
I loved ordering them for my friends. We sent each other some great ones. I. I loved it. William Hung.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, that's it.
Matt Jones
That was one of the ones I did. All right, so I'm going to give you a little bit of your. Well, actually, I'll do this next segment. Let's go. The phones. Who's up first? Sh.
Shannon
All right, let's go to Adam.
Matt Jones
Adam, Go ahead, Adam.
Caller Jerry
Hey, what's up, guys?
Matt Jones
What's going on?
Caller Jerry
Just wanted to say, Matt loved your podcast with the field of 68 guys.
Matt Jones
Thank you.
Caller Jerry
What is your. What is your relationship like now with Jeff Goodman? You all seem to be getting along pretty well.
Matt Jones
We get along really well. I mean, I. I had Jeff Goodman. Well, there were probably three people that, for various reasons, the Cal era took either friendships or acquaintances I had and kind of ruined them. One of them was a really good friend, and then a couple of them were Jeff, like, people in the media that I knew, and we used to get along, and then because of differences about Cal, we stopped. And, you know, all three. All three of those I've reconnected with. And. And it's been good. And Jeff was one of those. I mean, Jeff's always been Jeff. Like, I. But we used to really get along. And then he was so anti Cal, and Cal was so anti him that people almost had to choose side. Here's the thing about Cal and I, I. I'M it's not a criticism necessarily, because I'm kind of like, this, too. I forgive people, okay? So, like, if you dislike me, I'll. I forgive you. Like, I'm not gonna spend hate, like, in my heart. But I wasn't always like that. I used to be like, you're either with me or against me. When Cal was here. I don't know what he's like now, but when Cal was here, that's how he was. You're either team Cal or you're the enemy. And even with his friends, like, he wanted you. You picked us up. You know what I mean, Drew? Like, that's just kind of how it was. And the people he didn't like, he really didn't like. And Jeff Goodman was one of those. So it was, like, hard to be Jeff Goodman's friend and to also be close to Cal. It just was hard. There were people who did it, but it was hard. And I got so wrapped up in it that sometimes I would just be like, jeff Goodman's the worst, and he's not the worst. And so, you know, it's been good to reconnect with it. Appreciate the call. I mean, you see this with, like, Seth Greenberg. Like, watch Seth Greenberg now. Seth Greenberg hates UK fans. He hates us because he's Cal. Like, it's like, he's Cal, and that's just the way it is over the years. Mike De Courcey's like, it's like that. Although Mike is nice, but you know what I mean? Like, that's Drew. That's just what he. What happened during that era.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, well, Greenberg, he ruined game day. That's my beef. But on Cal, especially in the early days, KSR did a lot of just defending anyone that tried to say anything about Kentucky one and done and California, any national media guy, if they said something that we thought was offensive, we wrote fans or even Cal, you know, we're right back at it.
Matt Jones
And he loved it. Yeah, he loved that.
Drew Franklin
Seem to have forgotten about that.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he loved that. He loved that about us. We rode for him kind of no matter what. And, you know, we were younger. Like, I said stuff back then, I wouldn't say now, but you live in the. You live and you learn.
Ryan Lemon
So while we're talking about this. So do you think he felt betrayed when things started going south for. And we didn't defend him as much as we. He thought we should have.
Matt Jones
I think in Cal's eye, when he brings you in, it's a betrayal to criticize at all. Which is a weakness of his. Like, the way to be a good leader, you have to accept criticism from people who care about you. You kind of have to shut off criticism from the world. But when people care about you, you can't get mad if they criticize you. So, you know, most of my public criticisms of Cal, I privately told him way before that, but he didn't want to hear that. He didn't want to hear any of it ever. And to me, that's a mistake. When I see leaders do that, they're making a mistake. If you. If ever. If all criticism makes you a bad person, that's bad.
Ryan Lemon
So when you go 9 and 16 and lose to St. Peter's back to.
Matt Jones
Back, what do you want us to say exactly? You want us to go, that's good.
Ryan Lemon
Rainbows.
Drew Franklin
We'll get them next year. I had fun not going to the.
Matt Jones
What are you supposed to say? You can't turn poop into filet mignon ice cream. Yeah. So we'll take a break. Be right back. KSI.
iHeartRadio Announcer
TJ Smith, personal injury attorney.
Matt Jones
Call tj. He'll make him pay.
Shannon
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Great song. Mac Davis, right?
Drew Franklin
Yep.
Shannon
That's right.
Ryan Lemon
Yep.
Matt Jones
Willie Nelson did a version of this song too.
Ryan Lemon
Oh, he did. This is the only version I think I've ever heard.
Matt Jones
859-280-2287 every time I do these sort of, like, cow thing, like the relationship thing, people are always lights up with questions. One person says, matt, don't you think there's a difference between public criticism and private feedback? Yes, but when your job is public criticism, you can't not do it. It's like asking a lawnmower not to mow lawns. Like, I, I have to, I, I have to say what I think about this stuff. So, like, you couldn't. That's why it's probably hard for coaches to be friends with media members.
Ryan Lemon
Members.
Matt Jones
Like, I don't think media members in like, I'm friends with Vince Merrow makes it very hard for me to probably completely publicly. I don't think in the future I'll ever become friends with any of these coaches again. I, I really like, I, I was friends with Dwayne Peavey. Friends of Vince. I won't say we're friends with Cal, but, like, good connection. I'm not gonna ever. I don't think I'm ever gonna do that. I think it's a mistake, Ryan, to be friends with the coaches because you can't really be objective.
Ryan Lemon
I had a news director tell me years ago in Evansville, John Stern said, do not be friends with the people you cover. Coaches, players.
Matt Jones
It's a mistake.
Ryan Lemon
You can't. Because there's going to come a time where you've got to be critical of them.
Matt Jones
You have to. There's nothing you could. And like I. It's just. Yeah. So I think it's. I won't do it again. I think there was. It's just not. I'll be like acquaintances to getting news from them and I'll be nice to them, but like, I'm not going to be. I just don't think it's a smart thing to do.
Ryan Lemon
You kind of got to keep them at arms length a little.
Matt Jones
You do a little bit. Do you agree with that?
Drew Franklin
Yeah. And I didn't have a connection with Cal at all. Really. Didn't need one, don't care to have one. My, my whole thing was just. And I've said many times, wrote on the board last night, it's very simple for me. Did Kentucky win? Did Kentucky lose? And that's going to be my emotions. There's no personal agendas with any of this. I want Kentucky to be the best at everything. And when they're not, I'm going to.
Matt Jones
Sound like you get away with stuff. Stuff. Like what's funny is. And I think it's just because you're like so good natured. Both of you get away with things. Like, I can't like it. It's funny. Like you, Ryan will be much harsher with these coaches in some ways that I am. Drew definitely is. But they don't ever get mad at.
Ryan Lemon
You because you're the one.
Matt Jones
They get mad at me for what?
Ryan Lemon
You say you're the host, you're the figurehead for this show. So yeah, they get mad at me.
Drew Franklin
I hear about it, but I just don't care.
Matt Jones
But they don't call you like Mark Stoops once. I think you'd be okay with him me saying this. He called me livid about something he heard. I said, this was a couple years ago. And I said, well, first of all, I didn't say that Drew said it, but I said, I think what Drew meant was. And I go, but if you want to call Drew, I'm sure he'll talk to you about it. He goes, no, no, no, no, I'm not going to call him. Drew's a good guy. I was like, well, he was the one that actually said it.
Ryan Lemon
There's been Things that callers have called on this show and said. People say they heard it on ksr. When the coaches get word of it, they think we said it was on ksr.
Matt Jones
All right, so let's. It's time for my Matt Jones daily Olympic update. Are you ready?
Ryan Lemon
I'm ready.
Matt Jones
All right, so there's a lot of big stories.
Ryan Lemon
Okay.
Matt Jones
Number one, Canada plays hockey here in just a few minutes.
Ryan Lemon
Going to have it on here in the restaurant.
Matt Jones
We're going to have it on here. So Canada plays hockey, but those are not the ones that I think you're probably most interested in. The Finnish ski jumping coach.
Ryan Lemon
Okay, okay.
Matt Jones
Head coach of finish ski jumping. He was asked to leave the Olympics because he, quote, Shannon, had been drinking too much around the village.
Shannon
No, you can't be doing that.
Matt Jones
Can't be doing.
Shannon
No.
Matt Jones
How much do you think the finish coach was drinking if he was drinking too much around the village? Clearly they have alcohol there and they're getting wasted. He's from Finland, where I think people drink, like when they get up in the morning.
Shannon
Yeah. Brush their teeth with that stuff.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Ryan Lemon
We can guarantee he wasn't the only coach out there drinking, but they sent.
Matt Jones
Him home, which also makes me think he must have really been going.
Ryan Lemon
Wow.
Drew Franklin
It's not the amount. There's a lot of people drinking in the village. I mean, there's Russians that just drink vodka like water. There's drinking everywhere. He had to have done something related.
Matt Jones
To the send him home. So the ski jumpers have no coach. So if you see Finland ski jumping and they just fall off and fly into the air, they didn't have a coach there to tell them, go down.
Jim
I think they'll get better.
Drew Franklin
They got their drunk coach out of the way.
Matt Jones
The coach was going to say, go down, and they're not going to do it because they don't have a coach there. All right. Second, Breezy Johnson. Okay. I don't know if you saw Breezy Johnson. She won the gold medal in the downhill. She's an American. Her name is Breezy.
Ryan Lemon
Okay.
Matt Jones
So she. There's another event, the super G. She's doing their super G. She crashes and flies into the woods. She's okay. But when she gets. After she gets up and she gets taken to the bottom, you know, she's sad because she crashed, can't win the gold medal, etc. Her husband or her boyfriend gets down on one knee and ask her, is that the right time, Shannon, to propose after a crash in the Olympic race?
Shannon
No, absolutely not. I mean, I guess it could make you feel a little bit better about crashing.
Matt Jones
Right. But that's the question. Does it make you feel better? Is it because clearly he planned to do it after she finished?
Shannon
Well, yeah.
Matt Jones
So do you sit there and go, oh, no, I shouldn't. You know, I was gonna do this to celebrate, but then do you go, well, no, Wait a minute. This will make her feel better.
iHeartRadio Announcer
No, I don't.
Matt Jones
Do you go ahead and go through with no.
Shannon
I think you gotta call an audible at that point, maybe.
Matt Jones
So you're a no. What do you think, Ryan?
Ryan Lemon
I'm sure there's a lot of thought going into this. She's in two events. I'm gonna do it after the second event.
Matt Jones
But she won the gold after the first event.
Ryan Lemon
But if you give it to her, then maybe it throws her off for the second event. I think his strategy was probably like, I'll wait when she's all done after the second event. It'll be a wonderful moment for us.
Matt Jones
But she had flown into the trees.
Drew Franklin
I go even farther, dude, go sit in the stands and cheer her on and let her be an Olympian this week. You can get engaged another time. It has nothing to do with her crash. This is a big moment for her. Let it be her gold medal moment, and then you all can have your moment of notice. She'll get two big life days, but combine it all at once. You're distracting her from this personal achievement. I don't know her. I'm assuming she's worked her whole life to get to this.
Matt Jones
Probably sit your ass down in the.
Drew Franklin
Stands and do the ring another time. This is about her and her Olympic gold journey.
Matt Jones
All right? Strong statements.
Drew Franklin
So he tried to insert himself in her situation. Be a supportive husband, cheer, give her a big hug, but don't make it about you and your marriage at the Olympics.
Matt Jones
Wow. I like it. Okay, third, you remember the guy who cheated on his girlfriend and then at the finish line said that. That they were, you know, he. He wanted to win her back?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. After he'd won the.
Matt Jones
She's made a statement.
Drew Franklin
Oh, I didn't see this.
Matt Jones
She made a statement and said something to the effect of, he has caused me a lot of hurt. Basically said, I ain't getting back together with him. Good for her.
Shannon
How great is that? The guy poured his heart out to the world, and she's like, nope, not happening.
Matt Jones
She essentially says, no, and, like, leave me alone.
Ryan Lemon
Like, we said, we're sure. That guy thought, I'm going to win her back over by Professing. My mistake and my love for her to the world, she'll be so touched by. She'll take me back.
Matt Jones
So is this the worst decision of all time, to do it? Not only did you embarrass yourself on a national stage, but she. International stage. But then she also says, no, we're not getting back together.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Now the next girl you're going to date with.
SpinQuest Announcer
Hey, you're.
Drew Franklin
That. You're that guy that cheated on his girlfriend after three months and told the.
Matt Jones
World and then, like, embarrassed yourself. He managed a way to hurt all.
Drew Franklin
Parties involved here, make it even worse for everyone.
Matt Jones
Yeah. He took the private cheating and he. He not only broke her heart, he now publicly embarrassed.
Shannon
You need to go back to the woman he cheated with, because she may be the only woman that would take him at this point.
Matt Jones
No, because she'll be like, no, you.
Drew Franklin
Went crawling back to her in front of the world. Great point. I think he's gonna be alone with his ski.
Matt Jones
Finally, there's a Ukrainian. There was a Ukrainian skeleton rider. That's the one where you go head first.
Ryan Lemon
Okay.
Matt Jones
He was wearing a helmet that had pictures of victims of the Russian attack on Ukraine, and he wanted to wear it. The. The IOC has a rule that in your. In your uniform, you can't make a political statement. He refused to back down, and they wouldn't let him skeleton. What do you think it was? Pictures of people who had died in the war. So the IOC woman that made the decision was crying. She cried and said, I hate to have to do this, but this is the rule. Would you. What do you think?
Ryan Lemon
I. I'm hearing this for the first time. I admire the guy for standing up for something like this, but, you know, if they let somebody get by with it, then other people get by with it. I. I'm glad she. You said she was crying because that's a. That's a tough decision to have to make, but the. The right decision.
Drew Franklin
And.
Ryan Lemon
But I admire him for standing up for what he believes in.
Drew Franklin
What do you think I'd tell him his message got out more than it would have. I heard this on the radio this morning. We're talking about it now. I saw it all over Twitter. If he had just. I don't know what sport he's in.
Matt Jones
If he had just skeleton.
Drew Franklin
All right. If he had just skeletoned his way to the finish line with that, I don't think he would have.
Matt Jones
He was already getting a lot of media attention because he's from Ukraine. He's the only athlete I Think from Ukraine.
Drew Franklin
I'm sure he was, but I'm saying he got more now because I think even more people are talking about, what.
Matt Jones
Do you think, Shannon? Should they have made an exception to the rule?
Shannon
No, but because they didn't exactly what Drew's saying. We're talking about it on Kentucky Sports Radio. We would not have been talking about it otherwise. True, but you can't make an exception for that. I mean, it rules a rule.
Matt Jones
Yeah, well, his argument was this is pictures of people. That's not a political statement. It's a tribute to the people that died. And the IOC was like, there's no way to say that, though, without like bringing up the fact that they died in a war.
Ryan Lemon
Right.
Drew Franklin
Are there rules against pictures of people? I'll be honest, I've never seen that.
Matt Jones
I don't know if there are rules against pictures of people or not. I would assume maybe, but. But anyway, so there you go. That is your Olympic news notice. I gave you no results from any of them.
Drew Franklin
More to come.
Matt Jones
More, More to come. I'm enjoying the Olympics of the stories.
Ryan Lemon
Those stories we had today, you know.
Matt Jones
I'm not going to go into it, but there's a story about, I don't know if you saw the ice dancing. The French sassy evil couple versus the amer. Have you seen that?
Drew Franklin
I watched it live. I have a complaint. Our boy right here. Where is he? Johnny Weir, before they started, said, to beat America, France needs this. They've never gotten that high in their careers. And I went, he just announced her, jinxed us right there.
Matt Jones
Well, but they also. They have an E. They have an evil history. Like they've all like, you got to go read not the French shouldn't have won last.
Drew Franklin
It was an upset.
Matt Jones
Our American married couple were crying that we there we. Well, it's not good. You can go read for yourself all the.
Drew Franklin
All the issues.
Matt Jones
859-280-2287. We'll take a break. Be right back.

Welcome back Techie Sports Radio 859-280-2287 Text Machine 772-774-52541 One person writes, I feel good about Saturday. We're finally playing with enough consistency that I think Pope can focus on the game plan and not worry about effort, etc. Agree with that.
Ryan Lemon
I do agree with that. I just think Florida is just really, really good. Like I feel better about our chances going to Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina.
Matt Jones
This is the hardest game left on schedule. I think far I said before the season I thought the hardest game on the schedule was at Louisville. But Florida is now better than Louisville. So I think you could argue the hardest game is at Florida.
Drew Franklin
Right? Florida's last four SEC games, two of them on the road against good teams. They won by 20, 21, 23 and this one's so much I can't even do the math. That's like 40 something. 38. Those are the last four games.
Matt Jones
It's a lot.
Drew Franklin
And three of those were on the road.
Matt Jones
But this one, I'm just saying they.
Drew Franklin
Have turned a corner. The back courts look good. Fland and Lee looked great last night and that three headed monster of a front court is unlike anything we'll see.
Matt Jones
Yeah, one person writes, matt, your situation is different than things like the lawnmower. Cal blasted your career into the atmosphere and you turned on him. Well, I didn't turn on him. I judged what he did. But that's also no offense to you, sir. A really dumb argument. He did, without question have a huge effect on our career. Mine specifically. However, that doesn't mean that you have undying loyalty to the point that you're not fair. Let me give you an example. If Donald Trump picks as one of his cabinet members someone they owe him for that pick. Am I correct?
Ryan Lemon
Yes.
Matt Jones
But does that mean that if they see him doing something wrong, they shouldn't mention it? If so, then you end up with someone who has no checks on them forever. So you can't have that attitude. You can't have the attitude that, okay, well I owe you a part of my career. So thus I'll never ever say you did anything wrong. If you do that, you end up with what we had when Joe Biden was president. A ton of people who had their jobs because of him. And when his mental acuity was going, no one would say it because they all owed him their jobs. Right? You can't live like that.
Drew Franklin
And with the cow comparison, you had one tournament win in five years. If we're going to be low, how many years are we going to go with one win until we can say something like we have to speak up when Kentucky basketball is not even relevant in March Madness.
Matt Jones
And let's say you don't even know Mark Pope because most of you listening don't. Everyone loves him, everyone considers him part of us, but that only gets you so far. He still has to win. You know, that's the nature of this business and this job.
Ryan Lemon
It was not okay to lose to St. Peters and to lose to Oakland and to have like one tournament win in five years. It's not okay to not get to the weekend of the SEC tournament. That was not Kentucky basketball. He deserved to be criticized. I think he was just so thin skinned he couldn't handle it.
Matt Jones

Shannon
Jerry.
Matt Jones
Jerry. Go ahead, Jerry.
Caller Jerry
Hey, man. And that thing about the El Paso yesterday. I haven't flown down there a lot. A lot of people don't realize that that airport and Fort Bliss are like right on top of each other. That in fact, when you fly into El Paso's airport, that the they will warn you to verify which Runway you're on. Because the main north, south runways at El Paso and Fort Bliss are parallel to each other. And people have made mistakes and actually land at Fort Bliss.
Matt Jones
By the way. It turns out they say it was a party balloon that shut the air.
Caller Jerry
Well, yeah, the problem with Fort Bliss is.
Matt Jones
Hang on before. I want to focus on that before you go to the problem with Fort Bliss.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. They said they were shooting like their lasers at a balloon. At a balloon.
Caller Jerry
Well, I mean.
Drew Franklin
One second.
Matt Jones
Jerry, stop. We'll get to you.
Drew Franklin
They just keep talking to us like we're idiots. We don't believe it was a party.
Matt Jones
Balloon or what do you think it was?
Drew Franklin
Well, I don't know. But a party balloon, that's the best you could come up with before shutting down for a party balloon? We got bigger problems.
Matt Jones
Well, that's why I think that's what it is. Like if it was not a party balloon, that makes us look stupid to say it's a party balloon. So the fact that they have not denied it was a party Balloon makes me believe it was a party balloon. Because like the department, the government does not want to think. Make us think. Our military closes down airplanes for a party balloon. So once that story comes out, if they don't deny it, Shannon, then to me that means it's probably true. Right.
Shannon
We're talking about just. Just a normal little balloon.
Matt Jones
I don't know how it was. The quote was party balloon.
Drew Franklin
I think they're bad at lying.
Matt Jones
But why would they lie and want it to be a party balloon?
Drew Franklin
So we'll be like, oh, it's a balloon. What, what's next?
Shannon
You're gonna shut down for 10 days because of that?
Matt Jones
Yeah, I think, I think they. I think they thought it was something else. They got fooled by a balloon and now they're embarrassed.
Drew Franklin
We'll fire everyone if we're shutting down stuff for balloons.
Matt Jones
All right, go ahead, Jerry.
Caller Jerry
Well, what I'm going to say is the kind of. But what you're talking about is that they're real sensitive to what goes on around Fort Bliss. Because Fort Bliss, in addition to being home First Cab is where the army tests and develops all of its anti aircraft capabilities. Like Iron Dome, all this stuff. In fact, you see that mountain range? On the other side of that mountain range is White Sands. And that's. They test all this stuff and they are hypersensitive.
Matt Jones
What goes on there if they're going.
Caller Jerry
To shoot right next to the border.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Well, I appreciate. Okay, I can't do anymore, Jerry. If, if they, if they, if they're shooting down balloons, that makes me a little concerned.
Ryan Lemon
Well, they were saying, I guess they'd be trying to use lasers and I think that's why they shut down.
Matt Jones
They said it was lasers.
Ryan Lemon
There's a report out where they were shooting lasers and so that's why they shut it down.
Matt Jones
What does that mean, shoot a laser?
Ryan Lemon
I don't know.
Drew Franklin
I gotta test them.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, like.
Matt Jones
But what does that mean, a laser? Like, I mean, I think of like Star Wars.
Drew Franklin
I wouldn't kind of like that. Maybe that's.
Matt Jones
We have that.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Matt Jones
If you. Why do we use bullets at all if we have lasers? It feels like lasers would be much more effective.
Drew Franklin
Well, we don't want everyone walking around with lasers. That seems like a problematic.
Ryan Lemon
Just have our military have the lasers.
Matt Jones
I didn't mean people on the street. I'm just saying, like, it.
Drew Franklin
They have a lot of technology we don't have access to.
Matt Jones
Yeah. You know, I just didn't know. Shannon, did you know we had lasers?
Shannon
No, no, I guess I didn't. I don't know what our military is up to.
Jim
They probably.
Shannon
All kinds of stuff we don't know about.
Drew Franklin
I'm a little laser for like 50 years. That's. Those. Aren't that.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
Unique. We probably have much crazier stuff than lasers.
Matt Jones
Okay. I'm not. I'm not. I don't know anything about this. I just. It was.
Drew Franklin
You focus on your birthday balloon, but.
Matt Jones
It would figure out what's really going on. I don't. It was. I don't understand why they would let balloon be the answer.
Drew Franklin
Because they're stupid and they think we're stupid.
Matt Jones
They're not that stuff. I mean, somebody there would go, this looks dumb. I mean, we're. The three of us as radio hosts, are not smarter than everyone in the military.
Drew Franklin
We're smart enough to know it wasn't a birthday balloon.
Matt Jones
I think it was. Because I think if it wasn't, they would tell us that. So we'll agree to disagree. We'll take a break. Come back hour number two. Sksr. This is Julian Edelman from Games With Names. I want to take a second to talk about something that's personal to me.
Ryan Lemon
Me.

I've had the privilege of working closely with Robert Kraft for a long time. And one thing I've always respected is how seriously he takes up standing up to hate. As a Jewish athlete, my identity is something I am proud of. But I also know what it feels like to be singled out for it. That's why this new commercial for the Blue Square Alliance Against Hate that aired during the big game really hit home. It's about showing up for someone when they're targeted, even if you don't have the perfect words. And sometimes standing next to someone is enough. And you can show support by sharing the blue square.

You know what your customers are doing right this second? The exact same thing. You are listening to me. Which, let's be honest, is kind of flattering. But my point Is, ads on iHeartRadio actually get heard in the car, at the gym, on the couch, while people are walking their dogs.
