This is Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome, everyone. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. Tuesday, February 17th. I am Matt Jones. After we were off for President's Day, we are back and it is a game day as Kentucky plays Georgia this evening. You can give us a shout on the Clark's Puppet shop phone line, 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254. And this edition sponsored by the T.J. smith Law Office. If you call TJL, make them pay. I got Ryan, I got Drew, and I got Shannon. And I told Shannon during the break, it is the start of the lunar New Year. And it is also the first day of Ramadan tonight at sundown. And Shannon and I were trying to discuss what is the lunar New Year, and we found out that neither one of us knew. So, Ryan, Drew, do you know what the lunar New Year is?
Ryan
I have no idea. I wouldn't even have a guess why they call it the Lunar New Year.
Matt Jones
Drew, do you know that?
Drew
Is it related to the Chinese New Year? Are they the same, similar?
Matt Jones
No. Well, actually, it says maybe. Maybe, maybe. You're right. Wikipedia isn't clear because. But it says lunar New Year marks the beginning of a new year according to lunar calendars. But lunar calendars are 11 days shorter than solar calendars.
Shannon
It marks the first new moon.
Redfin Announcer
Right.
Shannon
That's what I said to you during the break.
Matt Jones
What does that mean? New moon?
Shannon
What? It's back to the first cycle. It goes in a big, big cycle. All year. This moon is cycling. But then after 365 days, it comes back to the very point where it began. And that's the. The new lunar new sun rotates around the Earth.
Matt Jones
So what is the moon doing during this?
Shannon
It's just rotating.
Matt Jones
Excuse me? The Earth rotates around the sun, spinning, moving.
Shannon
Gyrating do it.
Matt Jones
Right.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Okay. Yeah.
Ryan
Then after it tags the new moon and the new moon takes its lap around. That's right.
Shannon
It does a butt push to the moon. That's right.
Matt Jones
So none of you know what the answer is? No one knows the answer.
Ryan
No.
Matt Jones
And I don't know that that description, it says it mentions Chinese, but it also mentions Islamic and Afghanistan. So I guess there may be other places that celebrate the Lunar New Year. So I don't know the answer, but today is that day, and I hope everyone is enjoying their Lunar New Year as they would like. Ryan, we were off yesterday, which means we didn't get to talk about the Kentucky Florida game, but the Cats battled in Gainesville. I gave my thoughts on the game on the postgame show. I'll do it again after. But I'd like to give you two a chance to kind of give your unfiltered thoughts before we start.
Ryan
I thought they showed some fight. You know, they. A couple different times during the second half, they kept battle back, get it to four or five, maybe even two points. I think at one point thought they showed some fight. Just too many defensive lapses, giving up too many wide open shots, too many missed layups, too many turnovers, things you can't do, and you go on the road and play in the sec. But I left thinking, you know what? We get this team at rup. I ain't that scared of that team. Bring them on.
Matt Jones
You're not scared of them?
Ryan
Not scared of them after what I saw.
Matt Jones
Very good.
Ryan
Oh, I think they're very, very good. But I think we held our own, showed enough fight that I think maybe on our home court we might give him a battle.
Matt Jones
All right.
Drew
Drew went about as I. As I expected. I think I even said on pregame show we'll probably be down 8, like most of the game and just be in it, but never really threatening them. I kind of feel that's how it played out. But I'm with Ryan. I feel like we're a little closer than I thought we were. For me, the key wasn't even their front court. It's that you let the other guys beat you. Clavzar Lee had their best games of the season, maybe even the best games of their careers. So to have two of the other guys beat you the way they did, you know, we don't do moral victories at Kentucky, but it was kind of promising knowing that the winning out at 8, 9, the run Kentucky's been on, it wasn't like a fluke. They really have Turned a corner and can compete.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I was overall very encouraged. The guy off the bench, Clavzar, is that.
Drew
Yeah, that was the game of his career.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he had the game of his career. And we really struggled guarding those guys, the guards, which I didn't suspect. Colin Chandler, really. I mean, Colin Chandler played very well offensively. He, he really struggled on the defensive end, and that hurt us. But I'm, I'm still kind of overall encouraged. I, I think if you could have Ryan done. I, I, I want to say, well, let me get to the positive, because I don't want to lead with the negative positive. That was a game they easily could have quit.
Ryan
Yes.
Matt Jones
And they, and they have sometimes. I mean, when they get, they get down 15 now every game, I mean, you just, you just have to assume we're going to be down 15. If we're playing a good, we're going to be down 15. And a lot of times they fought back an unbelievable amount of times, and then a few times they've absolutely quit. And when it was like 32, 17, I think pretty much everybody watching probably was like, well, this is headed towards the routes. Zone.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And they turned it around. They made a couple big shots. I think Jasper Johnson hit a three that cut it to like 11. And then we got a basket and then it was nine. And it kind of stayed like that till half. And then we started the second half on fire and cut it to two. And that little period. You know, we always used to talk in UK football about the final four, two minutes of the first half and first two of the second half and how bad Mark Stoops was often during that. Ryan, Mark Pope, that. We were really good in that period in this game. And it took a game that was getting out of hand and made it manageable. So I like that we did not. We were not able to keep them off the glass in the second half, but you kind of expected that. I mean, Florida came into the game rebounding over 40% of their missed shots. Shannon. Which is a crazy number. Yeah, that's, that's a crazy number. But the disappointing part to me was these starts because we laugh about them because we keep coming back. But, Drew, we lost this game because of the start. If you don't fall 15 down at the beginning, if you just keep it within three or four, you might win that game. And I think this was a game where the start really did them in, because most of the time when we've started poorly, we've either got either gotten blown out, which Means we weren't going to win anyway or we've come back and won. This was the first game where I think you saw how these starts hurt you. Because the start, in my opinion, is what kept them from being competitive as the game went on.
Drew
Yeah, two things in my mind kept them from getting over the hump and maybe winning it. It was the start where again, it was Lee hitting threes. I mean, he averages one a game and shoot 25% when that guy has six points. Right where I think he had three threes in the first five, 10 minutes.
Matt Jones
Two back to back. And right at the beginning.
Drew
Yeah, when their fifth or sixth best player has 10 points in the. All right, you're in big trouble on the road at Florida. But then in the second half, if Malcolm Marino is not in foul trouble, I wonder how much closer the rebounding is because he had 11 in 20 minutes and he had more rebounds than Florida's whole team five minutes into the game. But when you got. He got that fourth foul a couple minutes in the second half and he just couldn't be as aggressive. He as good as aberdeen was with 19 points, even though he took felt like 500 shots. I thought Marino was the star, but foul trouble just held him back late.
Matt Jones
I agree. And Garrison was really bad when he was in, and so you just felt that gap when they were. When those two were different. I thought Diabate played well. Chandler hit good shots. And the other thing, Ryan, is you didn't get a good game from away. I mean, regardless of how many points he ended up with, it was not a good away game. We missed 15 layups. 15 layups.
Shannon
There's the difference in the game right there.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you hit five of those. We missed 15 layups and I would say six or seven of those were relatively open. Now we had some that were contested and they're good at contesting. Rim. That may be Florida's best thing, but they. We just missed. I mean, OA had three drives. Ryan, I can think of where he beat his man and had a lap and he just missed it. And I think that was a huge part of it as well.
Ryan
Yeah, out of those 15 laps, it felt like OA missed most of them and he missed some that were usually just gimmes. When he gets to the hoop, he finishes up, finished those. He just didn't get it done.
Matt Jones
So I feel like he misses those a lot, though.
Ryan
I mean, I season seems like for.
Matt Jones
A guy that is. Is. Is really great getting the basket. I think he misses more than his share of layups, but go ahead.
Ryan
But he hits those. Yeah, it's a totally different game and I think Florida did a good job trying to keep him, you know, off the three point line even. They honored his shot. But the thing that I was kind of surprised about, you already mentioned it. Like Chandler on defense, you know, Chandler on Nate. Amen was one of the reasons they won that Tennessee game. But yet he was getting beat time and time again Against Florida he got beat a lot.
Matt Jones
And then. And then they switched him up in the second half and they had him a little bit on what's his name? I keep wanting to call him Clavicular Shannon because that dude keeps showing up on my tick tock isn't like a urban clavzar.
Shannon
Clavicle.
Matt Jones
Clavzar. I keep wanting him call him Clavicular because that.
Drew
Call him whatever you want.
Matt Jones
Do you know who that dude is, by the way? The. The clavicular guy? Have you seen that guy?
Ryan
No.
Matt Jones
You know what he is?
Ryan
No.
Matt Jones
He's like a dude. Well, I mean, I don't want to. It's not worth going into. But he likes. But he like punches himself in the face until he becomes perfectly beautiful.
Ryan
What a gimmick.
Shannon
Sounds like a real intellectual you got there.
Matt Jones
Well, that's why I kept getting mad that he was making all the threes.
Shannon
Against Florida punch him in the face. Maybe get Brandon Garrison to do it.
Matt Jones
But anyway, he. Chandler was on him a little bit in the second half too. I don't know what Chandler really struggled, but now he did hit threes. He did a couple. He had a couple drew that if he doesn't hit, we're not in the game. I mean, he hit him at like key times.
Ryan
Yeah.
Drew
With Chandler early, he was going under those screens. I think it was part of the game plan because Lee doesn't have a great percentage. But then the second half Klabs are just hitting some bombs. He got hot. Yeah, I'm. I'm kind of wanting Chandler to shoot a little bit more. I know he's already shooting quite a bit, but he's got the confidence. He's kind of waiting till late in the game to make his big plays. We all know the big plays down the stretch, But I think OA and Aberdeen were like 1 from 10 from 3 and like 12 for 36 from the field. I kind of isn't as good as those guys have been in other games. I'm ready to see Chandler maybe get a little more selfish with three point shooting and see what that can look like.
Matt Jones
I'm with you. I would love to see Chandler shoot more. I mean, I think a relatively open three from Chandler to me is never a bad shot. If you. I feel like him kind of like I felt, you know, last year about Kobe Braya or Antonio Reeves for a couple years or whatever. Like if he's open, Ryan, shoot it. I'll live with if it doesn't go in.
Ryan
Especially on a game like Drew said when Aberdeen always not. Not able to knock it down, run some plays, get him set. He was such a liability on defense. I think they were afraid to play him a lot of minutes there late in the game.
Drew
He's 14 for 24 from three since that Vandy dud. So I guess four games, two weeks.
Matt Jones
I think I saw that under one metric, like something like Torvik or something like that. He's the 19th ranked player in the country since conference play, like in individual player rankings. So shoot, you know, I mean, I say take as many as you can.
Ryan
Hey, what was your stat on the post game show about them being behind in 25 games? They're behind like 15 of them or something by 15 points.
Matt Jones
They've been behind by at least 14 points in 12 of our 25 games. That's crazy now. And I want you to consider that seven games this year, we've played like awful teams. Okay, so. So take those out. All right, so that means we've played 18 games against teams that are from good competition. And we've been down 14 in 12 of those games. And in the first half, all of which were, well, either first half or like first couple minutes of second half, I mean, you just can't do.
Ryan
That's no sense. Nope, can't do it.
Matt Jones
You just can't do that. I mean, I bet you there are many years where that stat is like drew three or two and now it's 12. I mean, you can't have two of your three games where you get down that much. Now with that said, it's Amazing in those 12 games we're 4 and 8, which is kind of a pretty good record when you consider being down that much. But you just can't do that if you want to consistently. Drew get wins.
Drew
I know it is no way to live. It's been fun watching the comebacks and I'm glad they've won eight out of 10 and turned a corner. But this cannot be the product of Kentucky basketball is just hoping the second half they flip the switch and they do a lot. It's fun. But this cannot continue. He has to fix this. We've talked about it for months. No one has the answer. This cannot go on or this will not continue to work.
Matt Jones
There's last year too. I know, but it was like this is just what's happened when he, since he's been here.
Drew
And you're talking about being down 15, like even being down 8 that many times is bad. We're talking about being down 15 points. That's, that's crazy for a team that's supposed to be good in Kentucky basketball.
Matt Jones
But I would note, I am encouraged that I think Florida is now one of the five best teams in the country. And we were in that game. It's not a moral victory. I had that guy call the post game show and he was like, you know, Kentucky basketball is now Indiana and whatever. It's not a moral victory. But it does make me think that in an NCAA tournament, which we'll talk about a little later, they can win games that I think if you asked me three or four weeks ago, I would have said they could not win. I now think in the right scenario, they can win. But if they keep Falling behind by 15, they'll lose in the first round of the tournament. It won't matter anyway. So Pope's got to get the start of these games better. 859-280-2287 Text Machine 772-774-5254 we will take a break and be right back.

Welcome back. It is the Kentucky Slick Chevy Dealers.
Shannon
No, it's just. Just KSR sitting here looking.
Matt Jones
The problem was somebody wrote me and said they didn't put the post game show on on the on podcast. And then I looked and we did. So I don't know what they're talking about. One person writes, matt, you mentioned the Lunar New Year. You mentioned Ramadan, but you didn't mention that it's also Fat Tuesday and Lent starts tomorrow. You always try to help other cultures, but don't think about the Christian culture. No, that one just wasn't on my book, Shannon. I have a book here that has the holidays. Yeah, it does not have Fat Tuesday. It does tomorrow have Ash Wednesday. Okay, but it does not have that. So maybe it's not as nefarious, Shannon, as people think it might just be. What's on my little book of holidays right here.
Shannon
It's that liberal book you got there. Sort of.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I did. But that is true. I bought the liberal.
Shannon
Right. She got the conservative planner, Fat Tuesday.
Matt Jones
I did. I was going to get the Lee Greenwood. And they didn't. They were out of them. Well, so I didn't get it. Speaking of that. But Jesse Jackson died, which I was very. Which I was sad to see. You know, Drew, you and I did our show once in Jesse Jackson studio. Do you remember that?
Drew
That's actually my photo. That was on SportsCenter with the glasses and the big headphones.
Matt Jones
Say, the very famous one where it looks like Drew is about to land a plane. That picture.
Drew
Those are Jesse's headphones.
Matt Jones
Those are Jesse Jackson's headphones. We had to do this was back before we could take these Comrex units everywhere. And Drew and I were doing a tour around the country. We got to Chicago, we could. And the only studio they could find us was Jesse Jackson studio. So Drew and I went into Jesse Jackson studio. He had these old headphones. I think he had. Ryan. The same headphones from the. Like, from the civil rights movement from, like, the ones he used back then, because they were huge. And we did the show, and that led us to talk about Jesse Jackson, which led to one of Shannon. The famous drops in KSR history, Right?
Shannon
Yeah, yeah.
Matt Jones
Red, yellow, brown, black and white. Right? That one.
Shannon
Here it is. There you go.
Matt Jones
That's right. Remember, we used to use that all the time? And you said we. You said it. We lost it. I guess you had to look that up online.
Shannon
Yeah, yeah. Somebody deleted it. You know, we had this big collection of drops over the years, and I guess some of them got lost throughout the year somehow.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but you would play that all the time.
Shannon
All the time.
Matt Jones
There was like, if we were talking about the color of a team's mascot or something, or any racial issue. Red, yellow, brown, black and white. So rip To Jesse Jackson. He spoke once, Ryan, at Transylvania when I was in college. And this is kind of a unique part of history, in my history, at least. He spoke at Transylvania and a fraternity there, the K's. You know them, Ryan. Kappa Alpha order.
Ryan
Okay.
Matt Jones
You ever heard of that? They do that. Barley, wheat, barley, alfalfa. Give them hell. Kappa Alpha. That was.
Ryan
What a great slogan.
Matt Jones
It's not a bad slogan. They got in trouble at trancy. I don't remember what they did, but it was something that people felt was insensitive racially, and it probably was at the time. And Jesse Jackson was coming and as their punishment, they had to be the bodyguards for Jesse Jackson speech security, which I always. True. Thought was a weird punishment.
Drew
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Because it's like, well, how do we know that you're going to be the ones to actually step up? And you know. But that was. He spoke at transit. He was very good when I was there.
Drew
Yeah. He gave someone in trouble way too much responsibility. That seems to be a job where they need a.
Matt Jones
If you got in trouble, it's like security. If you get in trouble, that seems like a weird thing.
Drew
You're in trouble. You have to be a fireman tonight. Like they need. That's a pretty big duty to provide security. They need training and someone.
Matt Jones
Do we do that when people go to prison then make them policemen? Shannon, when that happens?
Shannon
I don't think so. Punishment is you may have to take a bullet today. So stand in front of Jesse Jackson.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I always thought that was an odd punishment. But anyway, rest in peace. And there was another famous death, which we'll talk about a little later. It's Kentucky plays Georgia tonight. Drew, Georgia's leading score has been out the last two games. Was it Jeremiah Wilkerson? Is that his name?
Drew
Wilkinson. Yep. Is that right?
Matt Jones
Wilkinson. And he's been out the last two games, but he is playing tonight. So they will come into RUP at full strength. How do you feel about the game tonight?
Drew
They're on a pretty big slide after. I mean, they were ranked to start conference play. I think they picked on an easy schedule. Now they're getting to the hard teams, but surprisingly they're one of the highest scoring teams in the country. You're not used to hearing that from a Georgia team. Play with a lot of tempo and then they call themselves the dunk yard dogs. Most of what they do is at the rim. Yeah. One out of five made baskets is a dunk. That's pretty crazy.
Matt Jones
So I'm told themselves, the dunk yard.
Drew
Dogs, they call themselves. I'm not calling them that. I'm just telling you when they look in the mirror in the morning, that's what they say to themselves.
Matt Jones
I'm a dunk yard dog.
Drew
Yep. But I mean, one in five made baskets. Being a dunk is pretty wild. And Somto, the big man who is a former Kentucky commit, he has 30 more dunks than the guy in second place in the SEC. So rim protection is a lot what they do. They're number one in shot blocking and they're number one in dunks. They're going to be all around the rim, all Night.
Matt Jones
I believe he played well against us last year, too, Somto and he was, you know, he was supposed to go here at one point and I believe when we played down there, Ryan, I think we got crushed down there last year because we had a watch party, I think at the bar and everybody showed up and I think we got destroyed. If I remember correctly, it was over quickly.
Ryan
Yeah, I forgot the watch party. I remember they played poorly. Was one of the. Probably one of their worst losses of the season. But yeah, we had a watch party that night. We were not doing well.
Drew
They also have Blue Kane, who had a big game last year.
Matt Jones
Oh, I don't like Blue Cane. I haven't seen Georgia play this year. Blue Kane is back.
Drew
Blue Kane is back. He and Somto and. And Wilkinson are the players to know.
Matt Jones
Blue Kane. Yeah, well, still, Kentucky's an 8 1/2 point favorite. And Ryan, to me, this now is the. You look with six games to go, this is the one. You just gotta have this in South Carolina. Well, I'll talk about the schedule later. But there's six games. I mean, I think they're all winnable, but. But two of them. If you want to do what you want to do now this year, you got to win. And this is one of them. You have to go tonight and you have to take care of business. And you have to beat Georgia at home.
Ryan
You have to beat him at home. And both games this week, you're playing teams that are kind of on the downward spiral. You have Georgia tonight and at Auburn on Saturday. If you're able to lock both of those up. Yeah, you definitely put yourself in great position to go in the SEC tournament. But Georgia is a team like Drew said. I remember they beat Arkansas during the year. They were rolling there for a while, beat Floyd, just kind of falling apart.
Matt Jones
Didn't they beat Florida there?
Drew
No, that was Missouri that got Florida, but they were on a roll. They beat Auburn, beat Arkansas, but they are going the wrong way. Just last Saturday they went to Oklahoma, who isn't very good, and got killed.
Matt Jones
That was when the popcorn got on fire. You need to. Okay, Shannon, we got to play that in this next segment. You got to play the audio of the announcer with the popcorn on fire. It's great audio that we played on ESPN Sunday. They're announcing and the popcorn machine catches on fire. Blazing fire there. By the way, burnt popcorn smells the worst and it gets stuck in your nose. So it might be stuck in their nose when they play tonight. They might be a little distracted. TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call TJ he'll make him pay.

You know you, I, I could stay up for it. It's fine. It'll be a late one but it is a home game at RUB. You guys feel good about the crowd for a 9 o' clock game after the team's been playing well, I mean there's only three home games left so you need to go while you can.
Drew
I feel good. I just did three games left. There's also double header potential with baseball starting at 4 today in Lexington. I think we'll see a good crowd with you.
Matt Jones
Could do a complete UK day. Oh yeah, baseball, KS bar, pregame basketball.
Drew
And I am what's more perfect. And the weather's going to be great today for baseball's opening day. You know they tried to keep us from watching them in Greensboro over the weekend. Wouldn't let us see it on television. So now we can actually go watch them in the lead up to our 9pm game with I think is Tom hard tonight too. Big day.
Matt Jones
All right, let's talk about UK baseball for just a second. Beats UNC Greensboro by like a million in all three games. But Ryan Tyler Bell, the all everything player who was supposed to be one of the best players in the country, he gets hurt. They say he's out. Definitely a lot of rumors out there. Maybe out for the year. It's a tough, tough loss for this team. The first game of the season, like in the sixth inning to lose. Maybe your best player.
Ryan
I hate it for the kid. First game of the year. He's your, he's a, he's your leader. They voted him the hardest working player on the team as a freshman last year. And for this guy to, you know, come back to Kentucky, try to, you know, dedicate himself to be a better pro, gonna be in the big league someday for this to happen to him this year. Another shoulder injury. Also another star player at Kentucky has another shoulder injury.
Matt Jones
That's three of them, but it's still random. Shannon, but that's three of them in two years for, for major UK players. I mean not just, not just secondary UK players, major players. Lamont Butler, Jalen Lowe and now the star baseball player all on the shoulder.
Shannon
Just bad luck, right? I mean I don't think you can Blame the strength and conditioning coaches on this. It's just things that happen.
Matt Jones
Now. They did have a positive stat. That's crazy. And I need you baseball guys to tell me how crazy this is.
Ryan
All right?
Matt Jones
Over the course of the three games, Kentucky attempted 23 steals and they got all 23. They stole 23 bases on 23 attempts in three games.
Shannon
It's got to be a record.
Matt Jones
That has to be a record, right? Like they. That either this team is going to steal a million bases this year or the catcher at UNC Greensboro is the worst player.
Shannon
Maybe he had a shoulder injury. He could throw the ball, you know.
Matt Jones
But is that not. I mean, Ryan, you've put. You were a base Steeler. Is that not one of the crazier stats ever?
Ryan
I just think about that. Seven or eight steals a game. That's amazing. Just in one game to steal seven or eight bases in one game. They did it three games in a row. Of course I love it. I love everything about it. Maybe they finally took my advice and, you know, did. Going to run the bases a little more. Steal some more bases. That's how baseball's one. Steal the bases.
Matt Jones
What do you mean took your advice?
Ryan
I've been pounding that drum for years that teams don't steal enough bases anymore, man. Run, put it. Put the pressure on the defense to make a play.
Matt Jones
Have you Drew. Do you remember him pounding the table that Kentucky should steal more bases?
Drew
I don't have like an instance that comes to mind right away, but I'm still running through the timeline of Ryan Lemon. It might pop up, but not. Not right now. No, I don't remember that.
Matt Jones
You said that they listened to you. Have you been telling Nick Mingione that? Well, I remember. You ever. Like when he did those motivational Mondays. Shannon, do you remember him saying steal more bases?
Shannon
Never cut off a motivational speech to talk about stolen bases ever.
Matt Jones
And I feel like. Isn't Nick Mingion known for stealing bases? Isn't that his thing?
Shannon
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Aggressively.
Ryan
Look, I've left.
Matt Jones
That's like. That's like his thing. Why are you trying to take credit for it?
Ryan
I've left him some messages. I even sent him a fax trying you need to steal more bases. They did.
Matt Jones
You're going to take credit for Nick Mingion playing the style of baseball that I think he's played from day one.
Ryan
I think he studied some Kentucky Wesleyan tape back in the day when I stole five bases against Lindsay Wilson in one game.
Shannon
You think you can maybe send them a cameo to Encourage him to steal more bases.
Ryan
Great idea. I think I will feel like since.
Matt Jones
He stole 23, I feel like they're on the right path.
Shannon
I just feel bad for the catcher here. I mean, they're picking on the poor guy. He clearly can't throw the ball from home plate to second base to get anybody out.
Matt Jones
I mean, if you're green, you think it had to be that the catcher was terrible.
Ryan
You steal the base off the pitcher, though, not necessarily the catcher.
Drew
I'm just. I'm trying to play with Ryan's suggestion. I'm looking last year and Kentucky led the SEC by over 30 steal attempts. I mean, they're already doing quite a bit of stealing as it is. You want them to do more literally.
Matt Jones
Are jumping on and taking credit for something that I think Mingy own's been doing for years.
Ryan
Yeah. I think he finally saw my messages and that fax I sent over, like, years ago. Like, hey, we. You know what? We lead the sec. We need to lead the nation. We need to steal more bases.
Matt Jones
Interesting. Okay, so. So you think it's not because the catcher. It's because the pitchers.
Ryan
You steal the bases off the pitcher, not the catcher. Got to get a good job.
Shannon
The catcher has a weak arm, and that doesn't help.
Ryan
That true. It doesn't help.
Shannon
I just wonder why Greensboro didn't put a new catcher in anyway.
Drew
Or I didn't tell him to. It's. Yeah, right. It's got to get the plan and get it out there.
Matt Jones
I love that Ryan is. I had no idea he played such a crucial role in this. In this record. Who's next?
Shannon
Dave.
Matt Jones
Dave. Go ahead, Dave.
Caller/Dave/Bryce/Bluegrass
Hey, just one more point on the Florida game. I know you've already finished the recap, but the play where he pulled him down by the shirt and tripped him.
Matt Jones
Yes. Yeah.
Caller/Dave/Bryce/Bluegrass
If you're gonna review that call.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Caller/Dave/Bryce/Bluegrass
You said that they couldn't change the call, but it wasn't. It wasn't that they couldn't change the cause. They didn't call the flagrant, which it definitely was by the. By the letter of the law there.
Matt Jones
No, wait a minute. I thought they called the foul on us, right?
Caller/Dave/Bryce/Bluegrass
They did, but when they did the reviews, they could have called the flagrant on the floor.
Matt Jones
They can. I don't. I don't. I think. And I could be wrong about this, but I think if they don't call the. The foul on the floor, I don't think they're allowed to change it unless it's like a. What do you call it. Like, unless physical harm. Well, yes, but I don't. I mean, you may be right. I don't. Because you're right. It is when it's a flagrant, but I always consider it like a fight. I don't know that you can just call an in ball flagrant if you didn't call the foul. Either way, it's a terrible call. I'm with you.
Caller/Dave/Bryce/Bluegrass
Definitely met the criteria for a flagrant one.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but it was in. But it was, like, during the game. It wasn't after the whistle.
Ryan
Right.
Matt Jones
So it was. I don't know what they. What the word.
Drew
Yeah.
Caller/Dave/Bryce/Bluegrass
That's a momentum killer, too. We had momentum.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it was a terrible call. I appreciate the call. It was a terrible call. And Drew, it was a momentum killer. I mean, you know, they. They called that foul on Diabate. Diabate gets pulled to the ground, and it ends up being a foul on him. And then I think the fact that it was reviewed just makes people even matter. You. But you took the time to look at it and then didn't change it.
Drew
It's. It's a good home whistle. Everybody should have a good home whistle. I just. It makes me mad that Lexington does not have one. That's a call that we wouldn't. Florida gets at home if it were flipped. We wouldn't get that at home.
Matt Jones
Do you feel like we don't get the home whistle? Other teams do.
Drew
Every team thinks their team, Every fan thinks their team is wronged. But I think it's a fair complaint for Kentucky fans to think that the refs aren't helping us out at home a little bit.
Matt Jones
Okay. I'm not saying you're wrong. I. It does feel like, to me. I don't feel like. It does feel like to me that we. The negative whistle we get on the road is greater than the positive. We get it, but. That makes me sound like a conspiracy theorist. But it does feel like it. Like, you know, I felt it. I certainly felt it in that game. Think about the Arkansas game, right? I mean, with all. With all that happened during that felt like the momentum of the crowd carried Doug Schaus to go down a direction. And I don't always feel like we get that at rup, although I'm sure other teams think we do.
Ryan
I've always felt like the home whistle is real, but I agree with you guys. It's just not as evident in RUP arena. I think because the refs, they walk into rup, they know it's a special place. Just like when players walk into rup. They know it's a special place to get to play in, so they want to be. They don't want to show any favoritism at all to the home team. But I do think the home whistle is real, though, on the road and other places.
Matt Jones
Well, I think the. The. I think refs get into the energy of the game, and the reality is if you make a call when the energy is good for the home team, if you make a call against the other team, everybody cheers and, like, you're kind of a star for a moment. And I. I don't know if there's been research, but I have to think there's. There has been research, Shannon, that you get better calls at home. I just have to think that's true. Yeah.
Shannon
It does feel like they get caught up in the momentum of excitement and energy, and it's almost like they're cheering for them or they feel like they're at least cheering for them, and especially.
Matt Jones
Back when they used to call a lot of charges. Yeah, right. Because they love to gyrate and throw their hips and, you know. Yeah.
Shannon
Game tonight, so.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Oh, we have Pat Adams tonight. Oh, goodness, here we go. Who's next, by the way? I don't know the guy's name. We know Doug Shalls and Pat Adams name, but the guy that we had Saturday might be my least favorite SEC official. His name Core. Is it Jones something? Jones.
Drew
Chuck Jones.
Matt Jones
Jones. That dude, I feel like hates us more than anybody. It's just we don't know his name. I remember it because it's Jones, but every time I see that guy, I'm not happy.
Shannon
Bluegrass is next.
Matt Jones
Bluegrass. You got about a minute. Go ahead.
Caller/Dave/Bryce/Bluegrass
Oh, I hope this takes. It's good, man, because I. I kept getting cut off. But anyway, I'll just be quick. Haven't you guys noticed that we were having some trouble with really speedy guards, man? I mean, we've got good guard defenders, but we're having some trouble with the speed. Like, the Vanderbilt guy kind of diced us up. Lee was too quick for us. I'm not saying our guards can't defend. I'm just saying it looks like that quickness, that's my first thing. It's got a little bit of, like, we need some help on that, and I don't know what we can do. My second point is. Go ahead. No, go ahead.
Matt Jones
No, I go ahead because I'm about to go.
Caller/Dave/Bryce/Bluegrass
The second point. The second. The second point is Chandler. I think he might be better at guarding the three and just let away hit the two just for a little bit more quickness because look at the job he did on Amen. He did good on Hugh. The second half we could do.
Matt Jones
We could. Well, it's hard to do because you got to guard because the Florida had three bigs and always our best chance at having a guard to guard a big. Don'T tell me. Wait a minute. This is Jane's Addiction. Yeah. We saw that story I told about when my. When I had to go to the Metallica concert by myself and then I lost you and Perrin. Yeah, that story. Yeah.
Shannon
Louder Than Life.
Matt Jones
These guys played, too, right before Metallica.
Shannon
That's right. Yep. That was before they punched each other in the face on stage and broke up.
Matt Jones
That's right. Yes. This. But. But this was at Larger Than Life. Yeah, and it was. I saw James. I thought they were great. I thought Metallica was great.
Shannon
Yeah, they were.
Matt Jones
I just was by myself and, you.
Shannon
Know, we'll get you back out there again. The lineup comes out Monday for this and Bourbon Beyond. No, no. I don't know. They don't tell us anything.
Matt Jones
So. Bourbon and beyond and Larger Than Life. They're coming out soon.
Shannon
Louder Than Life next Monday. Bourbon and beyond is tomorrow at noon. Right after the show.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Okay. Always do it after the show. I don't understand that one person writes. Matt, I do agree Teams get home whistles. Who do you think gets the best one? Well, Duke gets the best Duke. Duke's home whistle is crazy. And it's. It's less now than it was during the Coach K years, but it still exists. And then I think the best home whistle, actually, Duke is the most consistent. But the best home whistle, Drew, is. Is Kansas on Monday night.
Drew
Oh, yeah.
Matt Jones
On Monday nights, Kansas gets the craziest home. I will never bet against Kansas on Monday night because they get the craziest whistle of all time.
Drew
Yeah. Those are the easy answers I'd even give. Can Kansas a slight nod. I can't think of an exact moment, but I feel like I've been watching games. There's just been some blatant calls right.
Matt Jones
At the end of the game, too. I mean, they is the easiest bet in sports.
Drew
I'm trying to play it back. I was there the year Kentucky played there. It went to overtime. Euless was the point guard. Didn't we get kind of hosed at the end there on something? Or am I making that up in my head? I remember a tight game, and it felt like at the end they got one of those bounces that was pretty questionable right in front of us.
Matt Jones
You know, I don't remember. You know what I think? I think you're right.
Ryan
Sounds right.
Drew
I know I played them really close.
Matt Jones
That was the Ulyss Murray game. Right.
Drew
Feel like something happened there that really showed off.
Matt Jones
There was something that happened in that game, and I don't remember what it was, but you are exactly right about that. So maybe somebody can remember. We did get host at the very end. We were very mad. I do remember that. One person writes, Matt, one things I've never understood about Jesse Jackson is why he and Obama never got along. Yeah, that's an interesting thing. They didn't like each other, really, Even though they both were like black leaders from Chicago. But I always thought, Shannon, sometimes you can be like. Somebody can be like, too much like you.
Shannon
Yeah. Do you think maybe it was like a rivalry or something?
Matt Jones
Like Jesse Jackson wanted to be the first. He wanted to be the first black president. Obama did.
Drew
Yep.
Shannon
So a little professional jealousy sounds.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I mean, that happens. You know, that can happen. Ryan Lemon, you've seen that in our world where people have, like, a jealousy that leads to them being kind of not. Not getting along. Right.
Ryan
Yeah, people are human sometimes. But I remember Jesse Jackson ran for president like twice in the 80s. It seems like, keep hope alive. That was the big slogan.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he did. And at one Point was a real contender one of those years, I think. So we have to talk. We have to talk about Obama and the alien, Shannon. But I'm away.
Shannon
I heard what he said because when.
Matt Jones
I saw it, I thought, oh, I'm gonna have dancer for this.
Shannon
Then he clarified and then it.
Matt Jones
Well, he did. And. And thankfully, because I was worried about it when I just saw the clip, I thought, oh, Shannon's not going to let me live this now.
Shannon
You should still be worried about it.
Matt Jones
You still will talk about it. Let's not let me won't spoil. We're going to do that to start the second hour. Well, we do have to talk about Obama and the aliens because it almost. Well, it made my argument tougher for at least 24 hours.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Who's next?
Shannon
Let's go to Bryce.
Matt Jones
Bryce, go ahead, Bryce.
Caller/Dave/Bryce/Bluegrass
Hey, guys. Love the show. Quick question. Have y' all seen circling around on Twitter last night about Tyrone Stokes and how Kansas might be drawn a line right now with the Nike deal? Have you seen anything about that?
Matt Jones
So I did see that there was someone tweeted out now. And Drew, you may have to clarify for me what. What is what I heard and what's reality because I wasn't online ton last night, I heard that there was an account that said that Tyron Stokes, Kentucky had re gotten momentum, that's the number one player in the country and that they were in that Kansas for whatever reason that might not be working out, etc. But then I was told that the guy who did the accounts like a 17 year old kid in Indiana and people didn't understand why they were listening to him. Is that true, Drew? I mean, who is that guy that wrote that?
Drew
I didn't recognize that there's something behind a paywall and I. I'm already out of paywall money. I have too many paywalls I'm paying for. So I didn't see the full quote, but my understanding is the new kind of development is Kansas is still the leader, but the Stokes are like, all right, let's get this done. If not, we're going to reach out to other people, see if they're ready to get something done. So it's kind of like they're putting pressure on Kansas to meet the number, I guess and get this over with. If not, they are going to re entertain some or entertain some other places they were considering before. Kansas keeps dragging their feet.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So I don't know the answer to your question, sir. For me, that story all comes down to who is the person that wrote it and I don't know this person. I think their name was like Mike Vernon and I don't know who that is. It was. But, but, but somebody told me that's like a 17 year old kid in Indiana. So it doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's talking about. There are a lot of young people. Like when Evan Daniels was in college, he was killing it. He was in college. So I'm not saying he doesn't know. But like for me, just because I see a story that's on like an Instagram UK page, I need to know who the person was that wrote it. And since I don't know that guy, I can't really say one way or the other.
Caller/Dave/Bryce/Bluegrass
I got you. Yeah. Kansas fans is actually going crazy. They were like, we don't want them anyway. So I was just like.
Matt Jones
People want him. He's number one player in America. Appreciate the call. You know, in a, in a freshman class that is considered to be much more down than most freshman classes, he's the number one player and he's the real. Now he comes with a lot of like, he's got, if he comes here, I mean, I think he's going to go to Kansas, but if he comes here, like people are going to have to be like, he's, he comes with a lot of baggage. But we don't have any recruits, Ryan. So you know, I don't know. I don't know if you're a beggar, if you can, if you can get, get too picky as to who you get.
Ryan
I think, I think there is some baggage, I think there are some personality issues that come into play. But you're right. When the number one player in the country has a chance, you had a chance to get him. You have to go get him. You have to overlook that. And hopefully. Yeah.
Matt Jones
And you know, if Kansas wants him, I don't know. I don't know if we're in a position to go. Well, we're too good for that.
Ryan
True.
Matt Jones
But again, I don't know how much I believe that story because I don't know who that is. Maybe he's right though. Like, again, I just don't know the kid. So I can't, I can't say. 859-280-2287 Text Machine 772-77-45254 we'll come back, take a break and I'm gonna see if Shannon has one on me on aliens. We'll be right back.

A listener points out Matt omits Fat Tuesday and Lent ("You always try to help other cultures, but don't think about the Christian culture." – Listener text [20:32]). The omission is attributed to his liberal-leaning "book of holidays."
(06:05-17:49)
The crew recaps Kentucky’s close road loss at Florida, focusing on the team's persistent issues with slow starts, defensive lapses, and missed opportunities but also their resilience and ability to fight back from large deficits.
