Yeah. I mean, you lost by nine down there. I think Kentucky. Other than the two teams that beat Florida. Kentucky's played Florida closer than anyone else in the conference. Most teams have gotten smoked by him. And then getting home. I would, I'd say to be around that nine number and top of single

digits, but, you know, Malachi and Jasper are here, and so I will. I don't know if they're hearing right now but I will say, Shannon, I genuinely, this is not just me saying I genuinely think Kentucky can win tomorrow. Yeah, I, I, you know, watching the game, good Pop. Watching the game at Florida, I actually, you know, we played them really well except one little run that we gave early and then that gap kind of stayed the gap. I think with this crowd. This is a huge game for the Kentucky crowd. I think Kentucky crowd, this has to be rupp at its absolute best in order for Kentucky to get huge game tomorrow.

But yeah, if you go back to that game in Gainesville, Kentucky had a chance there at the end to go on a run and possibly win the game. So I do have a lot of optimism about the game tomorrow and I think that that home crowd is going to play big into the result of it.

Well, I mean I see a couple of the guys who are going to play a part of it back here. And by the way, Jasper, this truck, come on now, that truck is insanely nice.

Also, while Malachi is right there, if I may brag on him in the Florida game, you know they're all about rebounding. Their rebound numbers are insane. But until he got a little foul trouble, he was out rebounding their whole team in the first half. I think he finished with 11 boards. So more of that tomorrow and you can be in a good spot.

Well, you, I bet it won't be the last time. You guys have have had a really amazing high school career in Kentucky and now playing at uk. Jasper, I'll start with you with the truck here. It says Kentucky till I die. What has it been like to get to play for your home state school all year?

[Jasper Johnson]

It's been incredible. I mean, it's something that I've dreamed about since I was a little kid and you know, coming here, having, having a great season so far, it's been everything that I've dreamed of.

Well, I got a little bit, a little bit too much there, Malachi. Same for you. I mean, you've had great success on the floor and you've even had your mom calling into post game shows. I mean, that's how, that's how big this season's gone for you.

You also have Some losses that have been kind of disappointing. What is that like to go through on a day to day basis?

[Jasper Johnson]

I mean, it's a lot. It's mentally challenging for sure. But I know the guys around me, my teammates and coach Pope and the whole staff, we're all confident in each and every us. You know, we come into practice every day with, with an elite mindset and just try to get better.

[Matt Jones]

What's a practice like with Mark Pope for both of you? We don't. I've been to one, but it was in front of the media, so I don't know if that was different. What's it like on a day to day basis?

[Malachi Moreno]

I don't really know how to describe it, to be honest. I mean, it's just all about getting better, just making sure we're paying attention to detail and just pushing each other to be the greatest version of ourselves.

[Matt Jones]

Now, we've seen Jasper, different versions of Mark Pope, right? We've seen him. I saw him punch a. Punch a board and I, I didn't. I didn't know he had that in him. What did that. Did you see that coming?

[Jasper Johnson]

Nah, definitely not. I mean, y', all, everybody says Coach Pope is a nice guy. I mean, yeah, he is. But there's definitely times where he brings some of that.

[Matt Jones]

Oh, so there's some screaming in it?

[Jasper Johnson]

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He gets to that patina mindset and goes crazy at going, you know, practice and stuff like that.

[Matt Jones]

How many times does he say Rick Patino? If he said feel it. How many times do you hear about Petito, man?

[Jasper Johnson]

He always talks about how the times were where he's gotten soft on us and how he used to, you know, have to go into games and stuff like that. Even after a win, you know, he would put 12, 1201 or whatever.

[Matt Jones]

Oh, they get up and they run.

[Jasper Johnson]

Yeah, he brings it out a couple times, but not too much.

[Matt Jones]

All right, I want to ask you about a couple of your teammates. Let's start with the guy that every game, I have no idea what's going to happen. I'd like to have a camera on this dude in his day to day life, Malachi, which is Brandon Garrison. I mean, at any given moment, he could shoot a three or punch a guy in the face. What is it like playing with Brandon Garrison?

[Malachi Moreno]

That's awesome. He's. He's always coming to work, the funny guy, always having fun in the locker room. He always pushes me to be better, pushes Jasper to be better.

[Matt Jones]

Have you all almost gotten in a fight? I Mean, you have to go one on one with each Jasper shaking his head.

[Malachi Moreno]

But, I mean, it's all out of love. We're just there to make each other better.

[Matt Jones]

You fight out of love?

[Malachi Moreno]

Yeah.

[Matt Jones]

Okay.

[Malachi Moreno]

It's like. It's like. It's like having an older brother, you know?

[Matt Jones]

Yeah.

[Malachi Moreno]

I mean, my older brother, Michael, we fought, but we fought out of love.

Jasper, is there someone on the team whose job it is when he nearly fights? Someone to go hold him back?

[Malachi Moreno]

Oh, Coach McKayle McLean.

[Jasper Johnson]

Yeah. Coach McKinley.

[Matt Jones]

Is that really his assigned duty?

[Jasper Johnson]

It's a couple of different people who have to hold him back, though, whenever he gets.

[Matt Jones]

He said he's a big guy now. O Way. And Aberdeen, Jasper, you play with them in the backcourt. Both seniors.

[Ryan Lemond]

[Matt Jones]

I mean, Aberdeen's won a title away, of course, was here last year. Are those guys. Have they been good sort of mentor figures for you this year?

[Jasper Johnson]

Yeah, yeah, they definitely have. I know both guys have had great college careers and had a great experience so far. And, you know, having our senior night tomorrow is going to be sad, but that's their last game plan.

[Matt Jones]

And Walker Horn.

[Jasper Johnson]

Yeah, Walker Horn.

[Matt Jones]

Are you gonna be crazy? Brian's crime when Walker Horn now walks my guy.

[Jasper Johnson]

I've known him since. Since, you know, cows recruited me. And when I take a couple visits, he was always there, you know, giving me some advice and stuff like that of what he's seen and he still does to this day. I mean, he's on the scout team, and I'm telling you, walk, walk and shoot the wall, like elite at an elite level. And he's a great guy to be around in the locker room and stuff like that.

[Malachi Moreno]

[Matt Jones]

Malachi, I'm asking you for some scoop. Don't worry. Pope and the staff are not listening right now, all right? They won't even know Cam

He's starting prac. Maybe started practicing a little bit yesterday. You think we might get to see some Cam before the season is over? I mean, hopefully that's a path, A politically correct answer. Hopefully.

[Malachi Moreno]

I mean, we don't. We don't know the inside scoop, but yeah, he was in practice yesterday and he was looking good from what I saw. But, I mean, like I said, it's not up to us. It's up to Cam and how his body feels and how the trainers look, how the coaches feel.

[Shannon Dawson]

Whatever he can do on the court when he gets back. I'm sure practices have been hard with your limited roster. We know how it impacts games, but has it been difficult in practice being so thin? And how helpful will he be just behind the scenes getting on the court in practices?

[Jasper Johnson]

Yeah, he'll be really helpful. You know, Cam's a guy who can play, you know, multiple positions and so. So he definitely feels in a roster spot at any given time. He's an elite defender, elite shooter, so, I mean, you know, hopefully he can recover. And, you know, he looked good in practice the other day, but, you know, like Mali said, it's really up to him.

[Matt Jones]

By the way, you guys got some guys. I, I said this when I went to your practice. They don't get a lot of attention. But your scout team, though, I don't know who those guys are. They got some dudes that can ball on that team. Do they ever work you all in practice? Sometimes, I.

[Malachi Moreno]

No, there's definitely been. There's definitely been some days. They've had a lot of running.

[Matt Jones]

Who's the old guy? The guy. You know what I'm talking about?

[Malachi Moreno]

The guy that fit.

[Shannon Dawson]

He's a bucket.

[Matt Jones]

He's like six, eight and he wears six knee braces. And he, and he, he will work you all sometimes.

[Malachi Moreno]

Vince is good, man. He was a pro for a long time and he knows how to see the game. So sometimes he just gets cooking one day.

[Matt Jones]

All right, tomorrow is Florida. You guys have already played them once, Malachi, you know, they're bigs, they keep coming at you, and they got all different kinds of talent. I think tomorrow is going to be one of the great Rupp arena environments in terms of crowd. I just. I mean, look at this right here. You can see what it is. It's going to be like this times 50 tomorrow. How do you feel going into the Gators?

[Malachi Moreno]

I feel good. We know what to expect and we know what's coming our way, and it's time for a get back, so.

[Matt Jones]

Time for the get back. All right, now, Jasper Xavian Lee, he kind of. He kind of went. Got hot on us. Are you going to lock him down tomorrow? I'm ready to see some of that defense. I saw it at Woodford county in overtime.

Yeah, yeah. All the guards are, you know, we really like the. Into the defensive assignment. I mean, coach has been challenging us throughout the week to pick up our intensity, you know, try to help our bigs out going into this Florida game. So we, we have a game, a game plan, a scouting report on them, and, you know, we're going to try to do whatever we can to help maintain it.

[Matt Jones]

I'll finish with this, you guys Are both from Kentucky. In addition to playing, playing at Kentucky gives you a lot of nerves anyway, or, you know, a lot of pressure. Not nerves, but pressure, you guys. And I think Trent have extra pressure with the. With the sort of hometown guys. What's it like to go to play through that? And then what's it like when you're. When you're dealing with all these fans, knowing how much they want you to succeed?

[Jasper Johnson]

I mean, with me, I don't really feel like that much pressure. I know everybody in here is supporting me and the team at a high level. So, I mean, coming out and, you know, just doing everything that I practice and, you know, leaving it up to God and then faith in just being an even kill all the time on

[Matt Jones]

you, Jasper, that guy right there, Ryan Lemon, you do not have a bigger fan than him. Every game he says, I want to see Jasper Johnson more. That is your biggest supporter in the, in the, in the bluegrass right there.

[Jasper Johnson]

That's family right there. I mean, I've known him since before I was, you know, even playing basketball, probably since a little kid, so I appreciate this.

And Malachi, how about you with the

pressure in Kentucky, I kind of think pressure makes diamonds. And it's kind of hard not to. Not to enjoy playing for Big Blue Nation.

Yeah.

calling the post game show when you heard she called in? What did you think about that?

[Malachi Moreno]

Well, I'm gonna be honest. I didn't know I was saying my last name wrong.

But to the extent of I'm locked in on the roster and the schedule, I'm not quite there yet, but I am excited to follow their, their start.

I'm not there quite yet. Since we're talking, we mentioned football. We said that Will Stein's mom, his wife are here as well. You know, spring practice starts Tuesday. So we'll be able to talk to him. But you know, football is right here and we're going to get to see. I mean I can't think of a team we've ever known less about because we don't really know the coaching staff of the players yet. But I'm looking forward to it.

I think all Kentucky football fans are really excited about the upcoming season. What Will Stein is going to bring to the table. You know, I think we're all, we don't know what Kenny Menchie, our quarterback, what's he going to be like?

He picked number three by the way, which has a history of being a good number. The Andre, the Andre Woodson, Greg Yeast was number three.

Yeah, that is a good number. So I'm excited just to see him play and see how what he's going to be able to do for this offense.

A lot of fresh blood and looking forward to his exciting style of offense that he brings. And, you know, I know they got a really tough schedule ahead, but I think that this year is going to be a fun one.

You know, one of the things you don't think about, I was talking to Darby Stein. She said they just moved their entire family here two weeks ago. You don't even think about that transition that like all these coaches and their wives, they've all, you know, they all have moved in the last couple of.

Now they ended up winning. But the Michigan State fans, you could

tell were like, hey, we're glad you're seniors. You won't be here next year.

That will not be much of a legacy, Drew, if you end up losing this game. And then they held on, but they cut it to one after being up 18 with two minutes to go.

I saw Barry Sanders. Kid was one of them, too. Barry Sanders in the house for senior night. That leads me to ask, though, are we starting our seniors against Florida tomorrow? How much run do Walker and Zach get in the beginning of the game when.

In Gainesville, you pretty much lost the game in the first five minutes and played them even from there, so.

Well, you know, I haven't thought about that. Do they still do that?

We've only had Pope's experience once. I did he last year. I can't even remember.

I think he did, but all the seniors were guys that play.

[Ryan Lemond]

That's right.

We had so many older guys.

So what are you doing? Are you starting them?

[Ryan Lemond]

I've always been startup.

Look at this lady. You look like. You seem so nice. And you're like, no, Walker, horn and Zach toe.

You start him, first whistle, take him out.

I think you give Him a lot happening.

I think somebody on Tubby's team did that. We got the tip. They tipped it to him. He just held it. They called timeout, blew the whistle, took him out.

That or one of them just a quick something. Give them their moment of the, you know, going through the starting five and have that. And I love them, but maybe not more than just a quick.

[Ryan Lemond]

If I'm Walker though, and I'm starting, if I get the ball, I'm cranking it. I don't care if I'm half court, I am cranking it.

But it is Florida. I mean, this is like, you know, this is a game where I don't know that you can give up very many points because they're going to score a lot as it is.

[Matt Andrews]

They've averaged 109 points the last two games. To give you an idea, here's what we do.

You start them. If Florida wins the tip, just commit a quick foul.

[Matt Jones]

Okay. I like that.

If Kentucky wins the tip, Walker gets one shot, Jack one, three. And if he hits it, he stays in.

So what do we, what do we think Mark's gonna do, though? That's an interesting question because Mark seems like the kind of guy who really respects the tradition and would want to have that moment. Do you think they do it? I'm trying to think, did Cal do it with like Sam Malone and Brian Long?

[Shannon Dawson]

Yeah, I feel like he did.

[Matt Jones]

I think he did. Yeah.

[Shannon Dawson]

They were also beating teams by like 50 that year. So it was big of a deal

and we weren't playing to try to stay out of Wednesday of the SEC tournament.

[Matt Jones]

I mean, that's true.

Well, let's talk about that. Yeah, I mean, this has got to be one of the biggest last games of the season that I can remember. I mean, I. I'm sure we've probably had one or two over the years, Ryan, that have been for the championship. But when you look at the discrepancy between, I mean, if we win, a double buy is definitely on the table because we need like Arkansas to beat Missouri, which you think they probably would, and we need Vandy to beat Tennessee, which is certainly plausible. And then you're a four seat. But if you lose and then what it looks like is going to happen happens, you're a non seed and you're playing on Wednesday. So I can't remember a time the games meant this much.

[Ryan Lemond]

I'm more anxious about this game for our postseason than I am when, like you said, you're playing for a championship, you win it, you win the title. Most of those years, we already secure that double buy. But for this one to have such that variation of playing on Wednesday night or a double buy on Friday, I think I'm more anxious for this game than I've been in a long time.

[Matt Andrews]

If they lose this game tomorrow, they need a lot of help from Mississippi State to beat Georgia.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah. So KSR did a really good job of the website of listing all the possibilities. And if we lose, the highest we can be is an 8. If we lose, the most likely scenario is a 9, and probably the second most likely scenario is a 10. So if we lose, I think Shannon's right. We really need Mississippi State to be Georgia, and then I think we need Oklahoma to be Texas, both of which are not necessarily certain. So I drew. I mean, a loss and we're packing up and headed Wednesday, probably.

[Shannon Dawson]

Or if you're in the 11:30 game heading Tuesday, that could still be on the table. If you're the first. If you're the nine, that's the first Wednesday game.

[Matt Jones]

Wednesday game. Yeah.

[Shannon Dawson]

But I mean, the fans, we probably need to be there Tuesday night or up very early Wednesday because you could be playing before noon local time in Nashville.

Have we ever been an underdog on Senior Day ever?

[Matt Jones]

Who'd we play last year, Albert? See, look right there.

That boy, Andy.

Andy knew probably a couple, but we're not. But I don't know that we've been an underdog by this much in a long time. Now, the women. Real quick. The women play at noon. This show will. Will do the thing we did at 10:45. We'll actually do it 11:45 since the game's at noon. So you'll lose 15 minutes, play South Carolina. That was a big win for him yesterday. Women's bracketology has now moved Kentucky to a four and hosting in. In the. In the first and second round. So Michigan State and us were competing for the last hosting seat. Michigan State lost yesterday. Kentucky won. So they moved us above them. So I think as long as Drew, they play well today, they got a really good shot of being able to host in the first and second round, which would be huge for Heck.

[Shannon Dawson]

Yeah. And I don't think Dawn Staley slept last night after Claire Strack had 33 points and hit five threes in that game. I looked it up. She hadn't had a 3 since January, went 5 for 7 yesterday. I know she's the worst superstar. Kenny Brooks has Ever coached, but a hell of a game yesterday.

[Matt Jones]

Let's talk about that. Shannon. Kenny Brooks said before the SEC tournament said Clara Strack is a superstar. I've coached a handful of superstars in my, in my life, but she's the worst superstar I've ever coached. Which I read that quote and I was like, whoa. Since then she's been dominant right now. If the tournament ended today, she'd be the SEC tournament mvp. You think that was a good motivational tool to say you're the worst superstar I've ever.

[Matt Andrews]

That was great psychology on Kenny Brooks part to do that is. It's sort of like a back ended compliment because you're calling me the worst, but you're also calling me a superstar at the same time. Whatever he said, clearly it worked and he knows how to motivate his players.

[Matt Jones]

I saw an interview with her, we listened on the way back yesterday and in the interview she said that's my relation with ship with him and I wanted to prove him wrong. So it looks like it worked, right?

[Ryan Lemond]

But I hope they go undefeated and get in there. But I will say, if this is the team that beats them, you know, we've been in that Ohio arena just a couple years ago. I had a great time. Love being in Ohio. So one team's going to do it. I would be excited for them having been that.

I hope they win tonight, but then losing the conference tournament. So then it puts the pressure on the selection committee and watch people lose their mind.

So the New York Times. The New York Times, I thought this was interesting. Requested proof that Miami of Ohio tried to schedule good teams. Asked them for all correspondence that showed they tried to schedule good teams. And they produced 20 letters with division, with. With major conference teams asking for a game and getting turned down. They were turned down for every one of them. Does that make a difference to you if they lose in the conference tournament? If they tried their best to play good teams and good teams would not play them.

20, you say? I would say it was like. I would say there's 80 other teams in the top 100. You could reach out.

They reached out. They knew if you. They knew the top teams wouldn't play them.

So they reached out to like Pitt. I think Vandy was one of the teams that turned them down. Oklahoma State, I think so they reached and just kept getting no's. Does that make a difference to you? If they tried and still didn't get.

If they legitimately tried to, then I mean, I guess their hands are tied in that situation. What do you want them to do? But they could play at least teams that are a little bit better than the ones they played in the three hundreds and you know, high two hundreds. They still could have played a better schedule.

It definitely makes a difference for me because I was pulling for them anyway. Even if they get beat, I still think if they go undefeated in regular season and they need to get in, this I think solidifies their argument. And I'm glad if the New York Times actually kind of put that out there.

Is there some sort of union to like, like go against Miami Ohio to not schedule them well?

[Matt Jones]

I mean, so this is one of the, you know, you noticed when Kentucky played this year, when we played bad teams, we played horrible teams. That's what's going to happen. So I. So the way the NCAA tournament things works, if you remember back when Tubby was here, you got a lot of credit for playing good teams like the Belmonts of the world. Even if you lost. That's not how it is now. Now it's about how much you beat teams by. And so like Alabama put up a scheduling thing. There's a, there's a bulletin board where you can say you need a team. And Alabama said, we want to play somebody, but you have to be ranked 250th or worse for us to play. Because the incentive now is to play the bad teams and then beat the crap out of them. You get more, you get more credit for that than if you beat Belmont by six.

[Matt Andrews]

So then the NCAA essentially created this scenario and now it's gonna be interesting to see will they keep that team out.

I totally agree.

They have to fix it. I read this story. It. It's supposed to be about Miami Ohio, but they basically uncovered teams will only play quad one or quad fours. And if you're quad two or quad

three, they can't get a game.

It's not worth the risk. Because you mentioned one. There were several examples of schools like we want to buy a game. You can't be ranked this, you pretty much got to suck.

And if you sign there, there was. If, if you sign players that makes you projected good, they cancel the contract. Wow. So I mean it's, it is kind of interesting, by the way.
