Drew Franklin
welcome to hour two of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome back. Hour number two, Kentucky Sports Radio, 859-280-2287 Text Machine 772-774-5254 the KSR Golf scramble is now on sale for Lexington. It is on sale starting at 11 o'. Clock. The link, let's see. Drew, do you mind tweeting out the link until I can do it after the show? All right. Drew Franklin. It's on Kentucky sportsradio.com also on Kentucky sportsradio.com so if you would like to play is always fun. This year it's at the UK Club, which I think is a great course to have it at Lexington. Two different courses playing the event. If you've never played in it, it's one of the most fun things we do all year. The Lexington one is especially exciting because there's a ton of people and it's, it's just, it'll be at the end of May, I think it's May 29, I believe is is the date. So check in, get your team and play. It'll sell out. So don't, don't be, don't waste your time, but go down, go and join us. Like I said, great day for KSR fans and always the Lexington one especially. I'll always have special guests. So make sure to sign up and look forward to seeing you out there at the end of May for the KSR golf scramble. We couple questions coming in here. One person writes, matt, I understand about Shea and Cason. It is what it is. But people need a place to go when their career is over. That's when all these guys embrace Kentucky. Ryan, I totally agree with that. You know, you get what you get one school. And I don't think like, you know, how many times do we see Derrick Rose at a Kentucky game, right? Like, hey, point, his school is Memphis. So I do think ultimately these guys, when it's over, they pick the school they went to because they will be beloved there forever. I mean, it would be weird for Case and Wallace to show up in an Arkansas game in 30 years. The people would be like, what are you doing here? You know, So I. It'll be. Would be Kentucky.
Shannon
I think as they get older, like I said earlier, it kind of soaks in more because they come back and they feel that love. We even heard from guys like Khalil Whitney, who kind of left kind of in a little shadow of controversy. He comes back and then it's still here. He loves this place here. So I think maybe as time goes on, Casey will also come back, feel the love, and become more of a part of our family again.
Matt Jones
Another person writes. Matt. Yeah. You've gone a long time without commenting on the fact that the president denied your request to come on the radio to talk about Mitch Barnhart's contract. They did. UK denied and said President Capilouto would not come on. I asked about having him on to talk about the. I thought, by the way, it was 1.8 million. I talked to a spokesman for UK yesterday. I actually think Drew it was more money than that because they did not add. So the WKYT initially reported that they added $150,000 a year in salary and they reported that added $250,000 bonus. UK tells me they did not add the bonus, so take that 250 away. But they actually added Drew two years to his contract, which I thought it was just one. So if you do the math there, that ends up being around 2 to $2.1 million of extra money. So I offered to have President Capilouto on to be questioned about it, and they have denied the request. I asked them last Monday or last Tuesday and just heard back from them yesterday. I am told they are doing an interview with another show on another station, which, you know, I'll let everybody make whatever comment they want about whether or not it makes sense to go on a show. Shannon, that honestly I didn't know existed until I was told they were going on it. Yeah, that's not. I'm not even talking trash. I didn't even know that show existed. So, you know, if they want to go on a show where they might as well go open the window and scream outside, that's fine. But, you know, you can make your own determination why they wouldn't want to face questions here. But nevertheless, that's the. That's the response.
Shannon
It gives that impression. What are you hiding? Why won't you come on and talk about it? Why Are you hiding?
Matt Jones
Well, it is.
Shannon
They don't have answers. That's what's happening.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I mean, what are you going to say? I mean. I mean, what are you going to say? Like. And I think that's part of. I'm sure I'm told they're going to do some media, and that's fine, but the question is, are you going to do media where you're asked questions or not? I would ask questions. I think people know that, and so they chose not to. But it's inarguable that this is the biggest platform. Okay. That's not. There's no way to debate that. So if you want to get your story out, this is clearly the best place to do it. If you don't, well, that's. I mean, that's ultimately your choice. UK and Santa Clara. I put out that video yesterday, Drew, saying, why are we all acting like we're scared of Santa Clara?
Ryan
And it felt like most people, I
Matt Jones
think, agreed with me. I feel better about the game today than I even did yesterday. I don't understand everybody's fretting. Don't get me wrong, we could still definitely lose because this team has shown they can lose to a lot of teams, but we are better than them. And if we play the way we should, we will win. Drew, is that how you feel going into it?
Shannon
I feel pretty good. You know, having the lowest point spread of the opening round isn't the most exciting. There's one other game that was a one and a half. Where next is the tightest point spread for all games. For all. I mean, there were other two and a halfs, but two and a half. There's only one spread that was one and a half. So we're. We're right there as the. Is what the desert thinks about it. But I still just feel like as a fan base, we're being a little too cautious because we've been hurt so much recently. This is Santa Clara. Yeah. They played Gonzaga three times and they lost all three. And. And they beat Santa St. Mary's which is a great team, but beyond that, they haven't really been challenged. And I think even though we're pretty disappointed in Kentucky running that gauntlet of the SEC that they just did, I feel like they played pretty well in all three games. The SEC tournament just could make shots on Friday. This should be a game. Kentucky handles this. I mean, this is a logo game. If we show up intimidated at all, that's a problem. You have to be prepared to beat a team from the third place team in the West Coast Conference and you're Kentucky. That is a game you have to win and it should be inexcusable. I don't care how many threes they take that you would lose in the first round of this team. So I have concerns about round two, but I am not looking ahead. But I'm also not panicking because Santa Clara is in front of us.
Ryan
Yeah, I mean, what I. I understand
Matt Jones
that we lost to Oakland and St.
Ryan
Peters, but that was not Mark Pope. And I know we've lost a bunch
Matt Jones
of games this year, but correct me if I'm wrong, is every team that's beat us this year, are they in the tournament? Am I correct about that?
Shannon
Not Auburn, but Auburn is the only
Matt Jones
one and they were the first team out, right?
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So, I mean, St. Peter or, excuse me, Santa Clara.
Drew Franklin
Don't say that name.
Matt Jones
In March, Santa Clara has lost to Loyola, Chicago, to New Mexico, into Arizona
Ryan
State, and as far as wins they
Matt Jones
have over tournament teams, they have two St. Mary's that's it. They beat St. Mary's twice, but they lost to Xavier. Excuse me. They beat Xavier, they beat Nevada, and
Ryan
the only major conference team they've beaten
Matt Jones
is Minnesota, who I think came in last place in the big. In the Big Ten.
Ryan
So, you know, again, could we lose?
Matt Jones
Of course we could lose. But the fretting about it, Ryan, just doesn't make any sense to me.
Shannon
Oh, we're. We're gun shy because of what has happened the last couple years. I bet I went to three different places yesterday and heard the same thing. Well, Santa Clara shoots a lot of threes near a great offensive.
Ryan
Shannon, you said this in the preset, like who's watched them.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
All of a sudden really is a Santa Clara expert, I hear. I'm so tired. We don't match up well with Santa Clara. If we don't match up well with Santa Clara, then who do we match up well with?
Ryan Seacrest
Tell me.
Ryan
The same people who are.
Matt Jones
Were vaccine experts and who are weather experts have become Santa Clara experts.
Shannon
That's true.
Matt Jones
Very true.
Drew Franklin
You haven't watched them play a second.
Ryan
You haven't watched them play. Like when they say they shoot threes well, my question is, do you think we shoot threes well? Because we shoot the same percentage they do. So who shoots threes? Well, they shoot the exact same percentage we do. So I mean, unless you think we just light up the nets, Drew, I don't know how you can say that.
Matt Jones
Well, they rebound well.
Ryan
Well, our rebound differential is greater than theirs. And we play better teams.
Drew Franklin
And those teams are playing. Are they better defensively than Kentucky is? Those teams they're shooting well against, they're not shooting against SEC caliber teams.
Ryan
I mean, if our rebound differential is better than theirs and we play better teams, how can you look at me in the face and say, they're a
Matt Jones
really great rebounding team?
Ryan
Now, that doesn't mean they won't beat us. It doesn't mean that they, that they aren't good. But when did we get so scared as this fan base? And you can't just say, well, I've
Matt Jones
been let down or Mark Pope's not a good coach.
Ryan
Some of it is also like we. You walk in this building like you're a Kentucky fan. We don't walk in and go, oh, Santa Quilla, come on.
Shannon
I completely agree with you.
Ryan
If you want to be nervous about Iowa State, fine. But this is Santa Clara and I
Shannon
would rather, I would rather play their style of basketball than a team that wants to just come in and turn it into a rock fight and play in the 40s. If they want to get up and down and play in transition and shoot, okay, I think that's a better matchup for Kentucky now. Sure. Their guys, I mean, they have three all conference first team players. I mean they, they deserve some respect. And if those guys get hot and shoot 50% from three, sure, maybe we're going home. I'm not walking into this with nightmares of Santa Clara Broncos in the first round of this.
Ryan
How many of our guys, if they played in the west coast conference, wouldn't
Matt Jones
be first team all American or first team all conference or whatever it is they have.
Ryan
First of all, I think, don't they have like 10 guys on the first team?
Matt Jones
Okay, so they got three of them. That's nice.
Ryan
You think OA would be first team in the West Coast Conference?
Matt Jones
Yep. You think Aberdeen would be first team in the West Coast Conference?
Shannon
Probably.
Matt Jones
You think Moreno would. You think Chandler would like.
Ryan
There'd be a lot of our guys
Matt Jones
would be if they played in that conference.
Ryan
It's just, I don't get, I don't understand the being afraid. It's the doom and gloom. I get frustrated. Everyone should be frustrated. But there is a moment that when you're playing. They haven't been to the tournament, Shannon, since Steve Nash play.
Drew Franklin
That was 30 years ago.
Ryan
That was 30 years ago. If they win, it's a disaster. It's Jack Gulke. May not be Jack Gulke, but like, it's a disaster.
Matt Jones
But to be scared of them.
Ryan
You know, I want to be like Marlon Brando and the Godfather and smack and go smack. You know, snap out of it.
Matt Jones
All right, I'm done.
Shannon
Now I will say, if I may
Matt Jones
pay them one compliment, okay.
Shannon
Their forward, the freshman Graves, if he would like to move to Lexington this summer.
Matt Jones
He's great.
Shannon
That's a guy he's going to. I'm not. I wrote this on the board. People thought I was crazy. He's going to. He's going to be like a Yaxel type transfer player. I'm not saying he's good as Yaxel, but his phone's going to ring a lot and he'll command close to him out as money as Yaxel. I think he will be one of the hottest, hottest portal names this spring. Pope even said he's going to be a lottery pick in a couple of years. So when you're watching Alan Graves, maybe you know, in the back of your mind think, hey, that'd be a fun guy to have on our team.
Ryan
He's there.
Matt Jones
He's our toughest matchup. And he's the one you've gotta. You gotta watch because he, I think he's averaging what, 13 points a game and he's a four. It's going to be like Diabate is going to have to play on him. I can already see that. He'll have six points in the first time out and we'll have to switch defenders on him. He's really good. And he might be the one place that they have a positional advantage on us. I will take the bet though, Shannon, on whether he's a lottery pick with Mark Pope.
Shannon
He doesn't even start.
Matt Jones
Go on record. Yeah, what you say? He doesn't.
Shannon
He's the sixth man of the year. He doesn't start, but he does do everything. Well, he's good.
Ryan
I love Mark Pope, but I'm g. I. I'll take the bet on him
Matt Jones
being a lottery pick. I'll go ahead and take the money on that. But he is very, very good. Who's up next?
Drew Franklin
Let's go to Wes.
Matt Jones
Wes, Go ahead, Wes.
Caller
Hey, good morning. I had a question. I know there's one round being playing in San Diego.
Are those players gonna have to play
the jock packs like they did for the Super Bowl?
Matt Jones
Are they gonna have to do what?
Caller
Pay the jock tax?
Matt Jones
You don't do that. You don't do that for college basketball. Your. Your. Your rev share isn't based on the where the game is.
Caller
Okay?
I just.
I just was wondering because in the
Matt Jones
NFL, in the NFL, you get paid by game. That's how the NFL works. So you get your salary is like $20 million, but it's actually paid week to week by game, which is why that happens.
Caller
Okay, gotcha. That makes sense.
Matt Jones
And there's like a Super bowl bonus. I appreciate the call that you get for the super bowl, which is why you have to pay that. That's not true in, in college. It's actually not even true in the pro sports. It was unique because you get money for winning the super bowl, which is why that story about the jock tax and by the way, they made a big deal about in California. But it happens wherever the Super Bowls play, right? If there's, if there's a tax where the Super Bowls played, you pay it. It's just people made a big deal about it because the taxes are higher in California. Serve Pro is the number one choice in cleanup and restoration, whether it's mold, fire, storm or water damage. We've got a pro for that. Serve pro serve pro.com they will make it like it never even happened. If you, if you have a disaster in your house, that's terrible. But Servpro can make it better. Welcome back Kentucky Sports Radio Text Machine 772-774-52541 Person writes Matt feels like you were talking trash when you said going on a show that no one's ever listened to or that you'd never heard of. Shannon, I hadn't heard of it. What do you want me to say?
Drew Franklin
There's a million shows I've never heard of.
Matt Jones
I literally did not know the show that they're going on was a show. Did you Drew?
Shannon
I found out through the graphic that I saw.
Matt Jones
I didn't know it was a show. So that's not talking trash. I just didn't know. But then again, like yeah, Shannon's right. There are shows that I don't know exist. I'm sure it'll do. I'm sure that interview will do really well. One person writes, matt, would you go on a show that has bad mouth you for years you've made fun of Mitch and question every movie is made. If I were uk, I'd never give you an interview. Okay, that's fine. I mean that can be your first of all, it's not true that I've bad Mitch a bad mouthed Mitch for years. I've Said, I think he's the best ad here. If to go on a show, the only way you can do it is if no one on the show has ever criticized you, then that's such a terrible media relations strategy.
Ryan
You want, like you should want as a leader, to convince people that disagree with you. So think about the people who, like, just use politics. Barack Obama did interviews with Bill O'Reilly at the Super Bowl. Bill O'Reilly criticized him every night, but he still did the interview with him. Donald Trump, when he ran for president, the first time he. He interviews with anybody that wanted to do him. And that's in part how he won. You know, I have a lot of respect for people who will do interviews
Matt Jones
with folks that disagree with him.
Ryan
If you only talk to people that agree with you, that's the lamest thing in the world. You're just preaching to the choir in.
Matt Jones
It's.
Ryan
It's like church. Preachers should go out in the community and win people over. If you're only talking in the building of your church, who are you winning over? So, you know, if, if. If Eli Capilouto wants to convince the UK fan base that this contract makes sense, Ryan, why wouldn't you talk to the UK fan base? Right. This is where they are.
Matt Jones
So.
Ryan
And one more thing, and I'll shut up about it. Ryan, have I ever not been fair
Matt Jones
to someone that came on an interview here?
Shannon
Even the people you're totally against? You've been very fair.
Ryan
I moderated the Kentucky Republican primary debate.
Matt Jones
That's true.
Drew Franklin
You did.
Shannon
Yeah.
Do you not remember that?
Ryan
I moderated. I'm Matt. I moderated Matt Bevin and Jack Conway, and Bevin won the debate with me as the moderator.
Drew Franklin
You had Mitch McConnell on this show.
Ryan
I've had Mitch McConne on. I'm gonna have Rand Paul on my podcast. Like, you know, I had Marco Rubio on. I had Ted Cruz on. You don't think I can be respectful to Eli Capilouto? Like, come on. It's just people not wanting to be challenged. And if you have a position you believe in, if I was some crazy person who wasn't respectful to people I disagree with, then fine, I understand. But when have I ever done that and give me an interview where I've ever been mean to the person? Never. So I just think it's lame.
Matt Jones
But that's their right, and that's fine. Who's next?
Drew Franklin
Justin.
Matt Jones
Justin. Go ahead, Justin.
Caller
Hey, guys. First time, long time.
Matt Jones
Who are.
Caller
Thank you. I just wanted to say I. I have a fair amount of confidence that Kentucky will get past Santa Clara. And my question was, was it the last year with the Harrison Twins, maybe 2014, when Kentucky, I want to say they were like a. An eight seed and they went to the Final Four and they were in St. Louis.
Matt Jones
And they were in St. Louis.
Caller
That's right. That's right. They were in St. Louis. And they, you know, they definitely weren't expected to go that far. And. But I remember as the tournament went on, I just was like, wow, these guys can beat anybody. They really can. I don't really feel the same about the team this year, but I do have confidence we'll get past Santa Clara, and I think we got a pretty good draw. And with that, I'll let you know.
Matt Jones
I totally agree with that. I totally agree with that.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I appreciate the call.
Ryan
Remember, in that year.
Caller
Thank you.
Matt Jones
In that year, Drew, I was really
Ryan
worried about Kansas State in the first round. We didn't even go to the game because we thought they might lose. And then once they beat Kansas State,
Matt Jones
they, of course, went on that run that people will remember forever.
Shannon
Yeah. And I agree that the ceiling of this team probably isn't a Final Four run, but as someone who thinks Iowa State is going to beat Kentucky, I'm not lucky, thinking it's impossible. I mean, Iowa State has some disappointing results the last several years in the NCAA Tournament. It's not like there's some world beater that's just going to run the table. I don't have a lot of faith. Can Kentucky do it? But I'm not ruling it out by any means. They can get hot and win, you know, three, four games.
Matt Jones
Has everybody's had 24 hours? Have we found our mo. Our most favorite or memorable Iowa State NCAA tournament moment?
Shannon
Forgot to look that one up last night.
Matt Jones
You got 24 hours. I finally remembered one moment when Hampton beat them and they picked up that little chubby coach in the air.
Shannon
Yeah.
Huh?
That was against Iowa State.
Matt Jones
Against Iowa State. I was Iowa State losing. Apparently, they made the Elite 8 in 2000. So far, this they've been in the last 25 years.
Drew Franklin
Don't remember it.
Matt Jones
I don't remember it either, actually. I don't. I don't remember who was on that team either. Who's next?
Drew Franklin
Db.
Matt Jones
Db Go ahead, db.
Caller
Okay.
I've been a fan of UK listening
and watching since Claude Sullivan did the radio.
Ryan Seacrest
Wow.
Caller
And.
And my. My question is, since Cal has gone down to Arkansas, does he need a bodyguard down there?
There's some fellow that follows his butt
from start to finish. Do you know who I'm talking about?
Matt Jones
Yeah, I'm not sure. Who are you talking about? Oh, wait a minute.
Caller
Well, he's a tall guy and slicks his hair straight back. And when the game's over, he's right on Caliperi walking him off the floor.
Matt Jones
I don't know who that is. Might be an assistant coach or. But you think he's actually guarding him when he, when he goes off the floor?
Caller
Yes, he, he. He's not an assistant coach because you don't see him during the game except setting way back.
Ryan
Yeah, he may have.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I don't know. He.
Ryan
He may have one. I mean, I could see.
Matt Jones
I could see. See why, at least in those public settings that. That would be the case. Nice to hear from you, sir.
Ryan
When's your. What's the first game you listen to?
Matt Jones
What year?
Caller
Oh, gosh, I couldn't tell you because I used to take my radio back
and lay on the bed when I
was a kid and listen to Claude Sullivan. Oh, yeah, it was.
Yeah. I'm from Orangeboro, by the way, and
Matt Jones
I've got to go to break, but I appreciate it. Call back sometime in the summer. We can chat. We'll take a break. Be right back. Ksr, TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call tj.
Ryan Seacrest
He'll make them pay.
Drew Franklin
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
So I got a text during on the text machine that I feel like is really for the three of you all. One person writes, Matt, a meteor hit Cleveland today. Did you know that? And are the guys worried? Did a meteor hit Cleveland today?
Shannon
I've not seen that on the news,
Drew Franklin
but I don't know.
Matt Jones
It didn't.
Drew Franklin
I haven't heard it. It may have.
Matt Jones
Well, here, let's do a quick.
Shannon
I guess Middlesbrough is no longer Crater City.
Matt Jones
Wow. A suspected meteor loud boom reported across northeast Ohio. Meteor could be the cause of the boom.
Drew Franklin
Could be. We don't know. Not confirmed.
Matt Jones
NASA confirms meteor caused loud boom across northeast Ohio.
Shannon
There you go. Pretty good source.
Matt Jones
Yeah, trust that one. So apparently a meteor hit just outside of Cleveland that called caused shakes all through northeast Ohio and as far east as Pennsylvania. Oh, and they have a picture of it.
Shannon
Nothing.
Drew Franklin
Nothing damaged.
Matt Jones
Well, I think it hit ground that was like empty.
Drew Franklin
See, that's why I'm not worried about it. Like Earth is so big you could hit and then it doesn't even touch anything. So what are we worried about? Unless it's like, you know, so what percentage.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Ryan
So what percentage of the world is ocean?
Matt Jones
It's a huge. It's like. What is it? Three fours?
Ryan
Yeah, something like that.
Matt Jones
Do we know, Drew? That feels like something you would know. Is it 80?
Shannon
There's a. There's a. There's a. No. 70 something. So right at 3, 4. So there's a number.
Matt Jones
So let's just say it's 3, 4. So that means you got a 3 and 4 chance of Shannon, of it hitting nothing. Now, it could cause like a tsunami, but let's just act like that's not happening. Okay. Yeah.
Ryan
Then how much of the world is
Matt Jones
ground that is uninhabited? It's a lot. Right? Like, it. Like the poles, for the most part, you know, I mean, even in America. Think about all. When we drive to California, all the blank space everywhere.
Shannon
Right?
Matt Jones
So is that. Is there any, like, what percentage of the ground of the Earth that is not water has no people in it? It's probably a lot. I have. No, I've just been guessing. So you're saying you're not worried? Because even if it comes, maybe what, a 1 in 10 chance anybody lives there?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, see, a quick, quick Google search says approximately 50 to 57% of Earth's land surface is considered uninhabited.
Matt Jones
Okay. So 75% of is water. And then of the 25%, that's not half is uninhabited. So it's basically 12.5% of America has. Has people on it.
Ryan
So it's a 1 in 8 chance
Matt Jones
that if a meteor comes, it would hit where people are. And so you're saying, Shannon, that's not enough for you to worry.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Now, if that hit, like New York City, that would be disastrous.
Matt Jones
It would be awful. I think there are movies about that.
Drew Franklin
Right. But the odds are still in our favor that if a meteor is going to hit Earth, it's going to do what it did today in Cleveland and go.
Ryan
But does it worry you at all
Matt Jones
that it hit Ohio, Drew, and it didn't seem like anybody tried to stop it.
Shannon
I would have liked. I would have liked a warning, maybe a text alert. Hey, look up anything like that. I wouldn't live in fear with it because I just feel like if I got. If I'm the guy that got hit by the meteor, man, it was just my time to go.
Drew Franklin
You never seen it coming anyway.
Shannon
Not much I can say about that.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it's true. I mean, what are you gonna do? There's nothing you can do.
Shannon
Oh, no.
Drew Franklin
I'm dead.
Ryan
But do we have a way of shooting them down?
Matt Jones
I would have Thought I would have
Ryan
thought, honestly, if they had a meteor
Matt Jones
headed towards Cleveland, they would have shot it down. But I guess you shoot it down,
Shannon
it breaks up into pieces and then you might be covering more land. So you might just be like Cleveland.
They might.
Sorry about you. We can't make.
Matt Jones
Sorry about your luck, Cleveland. Your teams aren't good anyway, so here it comes.
Shannon
Yeah, they could probably path. Make a path of the trajectory of it and see it's going to land over here in the mountains. It's okay. We don't want to bust this one up and maybe make more damage. I just hope it made a big crater and then they could build another city right in the middle of that crater.
Matt Jones
They're not going to build a city. Middlesbrough is the only place with the crate. We are Crater City. We're not giving that up to a small town outside of Cleveland. But.
Drew Franklin
Well, I hope every step your meteor game up, though you're being outdone by Cleveland right now.
Matt Jones
Well, an uninhabited part of Cleveland. Who's next?
Shannon
Matt.
Matt Jones
Matt. Go ahead, Matt.
Caller
Hey, guys. Good morning or good afternoon.
Last week you talked about how you meander through the topics, how it's a sports show about everything.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Caller
Or nothing. So maybe, maybe you guys are like the Seinfeld, but from the perspective of George.
Matt Jones
Well, I don't know about it. Yeah, no, it is. I had a meeting Monday with one of the top executives, espn, and he said, how would you describe what you do in Lexington? And I said it's. I said it's like a show for Kentucky fans, but about whatever I think Kentucky fans would be interested in about the world. And he said, so it's kind of about nothing. And I said, yes, that's kind of true. So I agree with that.
Caller
So I think. But from the perspective of George Costanza because of the bull riding and the new hand modeling stuff you're doing.
Matt Jones
That's true. I do have quite a hand model that comes out. Apparently that comes out at noon, so. But. But I appreciate it. Who's next?
Drew Franklin
Adam?
Matt Jones
Yeah. If we were all the characters from Seinfeld, who would be who?
Shannon
I'm George Costanza. I'll go ahead and take that one. There's no doubt you're Jerry. Drew is the lane.
Matt Jones
Drew is a lane.
Shannon
And then Shannon's Kramer, Shannon's Elaine and Drew's Kramer.
Matt Jones
Oh, you're giving Shannon away.
Shannon
I'll be Elaine.
Matt Jones
I think Drew's more Elaine. I think Shannon's more Kramer. And then Billy's Newman.
Shannon
Billy's Newman.
Matt Jones
Definitely Newman. Who's next?
Drew Franklin
Adam.
Matt Jones
Adam. Go ahead, Adam.
Caller
Hey, what's up, guys? About to come at you with a lot of facts. First, the meteor set Earth or they come through the atmosphere all the time. That's what causes the sonic boom. I mean, as far as we know, a meteor didn't actually hit the ground. It burns up and causes the sonic boom.
Ryan
Oh, so they're not.
Matt Jones
So it didn't hit the ground?
Caller
I mean, from everything I've seen. No, I mean, that happens all the time. When you see a shooting star or whatnot, that's a meteor coming through that's burning up in the atmosphere. You know, sometimes if it's a larger one, it does cause a sonic boom. But yeah, as far as, you know, Santa Clara and Kentucky, it's. I've got two things. One that is in favor and one that that is not Kentucky. There's only 16 teams in front of them that are in top 40 of both offense and defense. So, I mean, that would suggest that we should be able to make a run to the sweet 16. But as far as, you know, us shooting the same three point percentage of them that you've been saying, you know, if we go 4 for 10, that's 40. And they go 10 for 30. 30, they've still had 18 more points than us at the three point line. So that's.
Ryan
No, that's a fair point.
Caller
It's not always.
Matt Jones
I know that that's a completely fair point. What is the total. Do you know what the comparison is? Total number of threes for both teams made this year. I would assume they probably have more,
Caller
but I don't know what Kentucky's is. But, you know, I think I've heard Tom Leach say that they've hit almost 300 three pointers this year, which I know Kentucky is nowhere near that. So.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Caller
No, that's volume matters.
Matt Jones
You. You are exactly right. I think that is a completely. That is a completely fair point. And I. I can't find the total numbers, but that. No, that's. That. That's completely legitimate. Appreciate the call. No, that. That completely fair point. That's. That's worth worth noting. Who's up next?
Drew Franklin
Let's go to Clay.
Matt Jones
Clay. Go ahead, Clay.
Caller
Hey, man, I'm just tired of all, all the Kentucky fans and all this talk about how we're scared of this team we're playing. I mean, this is ridiculous. Who did. We want to get paired. The Kentucky fans. We want to get paired up with the blind and deaf team.
Matt Jones
I mean, I don't know who they wanted. I mean, our other options, we couldn't play Missouri and Texas A and m because they're 10c seeds and we're in the same conference. So our only other option. If you look at the 10 seeds with central Florida and I can tell you I would be legitimately scared of Central Florida, they are athletically better than us. So I'm with you.
Ryan
If you look at the options of
Matt Jones
who we had to play, this was the best one.
Caller
Listen, I just. It's just ridiculous. I mean, they think, I mean, we're seven seed. What do we expect to get? You know what, you know what Stein said. If you're scared, you go to church. So, you know, bring them on. And bring on. I'm not scared of a cyclone either. I'm not scared of them either. Bring them on. Iowa State, we want them.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I appreciate the call. The other option, I mean, there was only one other option, Ryan. We could play Central Florida, then Yukon or Santa Clara. Then I was State. So my question for you is, would you rather play Santa Clara and Iowa State or Central Florida and Yukon before the tournament?
Shannon
You'd ask me to pick one of those 10 seeds. I'm picking Santa Clara. If you asked me to pick one of the two seeds, I'm picking Iowa State. I mean, it could have been what location. I'm picking St. Louis.
Matt Jones
That's true. We also probably got the best location. Drew, I know you, you were a little more, more bearish on this game with Iowa State. Would you rather have gotten Central Florida and Yukon?
Shannon
I have ycon in my title game, so no.
Ryan
So no bracket.
Shannon
I have them winning that region.
Matt Jones
You know, we don't get the, we don't get the, you know, the value of getting to pick our opponent because we weren't good enough this year.
Shannon
Right.
Matt Jones
So of our, of the, of our possibilities. This was my. If you. When I was thinking about the bracket and I was looking at it, I thought our best option is Santa Clara or St. Mary's and the two seat I would want to play the most is Iowa State or Purdue. Well, we didn't get Purdue, but we did get Santa Clara and we did get Iowa State. So I'm, I'm generally happy with it. Stop overpaying for sunglasses if you're tired of buying expensive sunglasses only to lose or break them. Shady Rays Independent American owned company started right here in Kentucky. Premium polarized shades for every activity from tangle free aviators that won't get stuck in your hair to lost and broken replacement. That's the best in the industry. Go to shady rays or shadyrays.com would you just send me drew about the meteor there?
Shannon
It's a video.
Matt Jones
Who I want to see the video.
Shannon
And it goes up in flames like our caller who oddly brought facts to the show. Calm down sir. It kind of looks like how he
described goes into the atmosphere.
Yeah, it kind of turns into flames and looks like it might not even make it to the surface.
Drew Franklin
Nothing to worry about.
Shannon
Sorry, this is radio and I can't
Matt Jones
even Callers with facts. What is that about?
Drew Franklin
The wrong show can't have more facts than the hosts.
Matt Jones
That is a very cool video by the way of watching it burn up. It's on National Weather Service Pittsburgh, so we'll take a break. Be right back.

Matt Jones
This actually specifically applies.
Drew Franklin
That's right.
Matt Jones
Cleveland did rock today.
Drew Franklin
It did.
Matt Jones
So a meteor that hits the ground becomes a meteorite. Did you know that?
Shannon
Didn't know that.
Matt Jones
Drew, did you know that?
Shannon
I did not.
Matt Jones
So we learned something. According now, this may or may not be correct. So these are. These are text machine facts, Ryan. And those might be correct or they might not. Right. One person writes, a meteor hit a house in Louisville in the 1970s. Do we believe that's true?
Shannon
We could probably do a little Google work and see if that's true or not.
Drew Franklin
Like there would be, like, a way to track that if that were true.
Shannon
Pretty big story if it's true.
Matt Jones
Maybe somebody.
Ryan
Somebody in Louisville.
Matt Jones
We've got people listening who lived in Louisville in the 70s. I feel like they would know.
Shannon
I found confirmation. 1977. From WA. From WHAS. In 1977, a 3 pound meteorite hit Louisville. Looking for a specific spot, not seeing one. But there is a news story confirming it happened.
Ryan
Huh.
Matt Jones
Well, that would be interesting. I would guess if it did, it would be out on Dixie Highway.
Drew Franklin
Sweet home, Dixie Highway.
Matt Jones
Or Preston. I could see it being either one of those places.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
One person writes, matt, in recent human history, there's only one reported case of a meteor hitting a human being. Well, that guy's unlucky.
Drew Franklin
You talk?
Shannon
Yeah. Really?
Drew Franklin
I mean, my gosh.
Matt Jones
That is one of those that you just say, you know what? It was my time.
Drew Franklin
Remember that show A Thousand Ways to Die? I bet Meteorite to the Head wasn't one of them.
Matt Jones
Poor. I feel bad for that person. I don't even know who it was.
Shannon
I found a story on it.
Matt Jones
Okay, what is it? I'm liking this.
Shannon
This is even. This is bad. Her name's Ann, but she was in her house. It came through the roof. She wasn't even out exposed. To the.
Ryan
Where was this?
Shannon
I'm reading the Wikipedia. It has its own Wikipedia page. Oh, wait. Never mind. She lived because there's a photo of her pointing at the hole in the roof where it came through.
Caller
Wow.
Matt Jones
Go Anne.
Shannon
Yeah, she's wearing. Wearing a nice little outfit. Got some nice wallpaper. And she's pointing up at the hole in her roof.
Ryan
So where is it? Where was it?
Shannon
That was in Alabama.
Matt Jones
So Anne's just sitting in Alabama watching the Ricky Lake show and a meteor comes through the roof. She does.
Shannon
In 1954. So I doubt she was watching Ricky Lake, but it's a big.
Matt Jones
She just. She just took it.
Drew Franklin
Yeah.
Shannon
Yes.
There's a picture of her holding it too. She's.
Matt Jones
No, she's not holding it.
Shannon
She has her own Wikipedia page. Elizabeth Fowler Hodges.
Drew Franklin
I need to know how she actually died. Was it like the common cold that took her down at a meteorite?
Shannon
Couldn't get her.
Kidney failure. It's also on her page.
Drew Franklin
Oh, wow.
Ryan
So 18 years later, she's holding the meteor.
Shannon
Got a nice little outfit on at home. Looks like somebody like to dress up in her house.
Drew Franklin
Wow.
Shannon
It bounced off a radio and hit her in the thigh. I'm reading all this on the fly.
Drew Franklin
What a day.
Shannon
At 2pm local time.
How big is it?
She was napping on her couch. And at 2pm a meteorite hit her, her radio and then her thigh.
How big is it? Like baseball size or.
Drew Franklin
Life comes at you fast.
Ryan
How big's her radio?
Shannon
It's split into three fragments. One of them hit her through her roof. So there you go. It can happen even if you're just at home napping on your couch.
But you think if it comes through the atmosphere and it catches on fire.
I'm gonna tweet the picture of Ann holding her meteor because she looks very unhappy that it put a hole in her roof.
Drew Franklin
Who's got a better story than her?
Matt Jones
I mean, from Alabama. Wow. I had her on the radio in 1950. I bet.
Ryan
Fine.
Matt Jones
Bomb had her. That's true.
Ryan
Hey, Paul, A meteorite hit my house.
Matt Jones
All right.
Shannon
I just tweeted the photo. Go check out.
I got. See him.
Matt Jones
Who's next?
Drew Franklin
Skyler.
Matt Jones
Skyler. Go ahead, Skyler.
Caller
Hey, guys. I got a couple comments, but one, I've never questioned the way I pronounce meteor. Listening to Matt say media. How do you say it, Matt?
Spinquest Advertiser
I, I, I.
Matt Jones
It's blowing meteor. Is it not meteor?
Caller
I mean, I mean, maybe a more Kentucky way to say it is meteor,
Matt Jones
but I don't know what Meteorite.
Caller
Meteorite.
Shannon
Okay.
Ryan
Maybe I put some emphasis on the
Matt Jones
or, but I got you.
Drew Franklin
You play.
Caller
Yeah. You're good. I appreciate it.
Matt Jones
I.
Caller
My. My comment about why the fan base is scared is because speed of the leader, speed of the team. I feel like I watched the Rick patino clip from St. John's last year where he is saying, where is your fight? Where's your toughness? And he has set a culture of not being scared of anybody. And unfortunately, Mark Pope has set a culture of being a little. He's hiding. I mean, hiding right now. And I think the fan base needs a little toughness and needs a little grit. So stay safe from the meteors and I'll talk to you soon.
Matt Jones
Now I'm gonna be thinking about it. He's saying I say it, Ryan. Like TV in Tennessee and Halloween.
Shannon
Yes.
Matt Jones
Meteor.
Shannon
Yeah. Well, we say meteorite. You've been saying that the way I think you're supposed to say it.
Matt Jones
So you all say meteor.
Drew Franklin
Meteor.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And I say meteor.
Shannon
Anne's radio is in the American Museum of Natural History. This is. I just keep learning more details about.
Really?
Ryan
Her radio made the American Museum of Natural History.
Shannon
Yeah. She suffered from social anxiety after it happened.
Matt Jones
I would understand why.
Shannon
Yeah, no kidding.
Matt Jones
You just sit at home. I would have social anxiety, too. Skin cancer isn't rare. It's the most common cancer in the U.S. one in five Americans face it. And here in Kentucky, the odds are even higher. Matt Jones
Are you ready to rock with the first five?
Shannon
First, let's go pick them.
Matt Jones
Why did I say first? Five. Five.
Shannon
Five.
Matt Jones
First. The first five teams are playing tonight.
Ryan
First four.
Matt Jones
Bruce. Quickly.
Shannon
Drew.
Matt Jones
Maryland. Baltimore county versus Howard. Who you got?
Shannon
I'm going with the Fighting Howard.
Matt Jones
Bison, I think. All right, guys. What do you got? Ryan?
Shannon
I'm going Howard. I like Howard.
Drew Franklin
Shannon Howard.
Shannon
Maryland.
Matt Jones
Baltimore County. They beat Virginia. They can certainly beat a guy named Howard.
Ryan
Texas versus NC State.
Matt Jones
A little Will. Wade versus whoever. The Texas code. Miller. Sean Miller.
Drew Franklin
Texas.
Shannon
I'm NC State.
Matt Jones
Shannon or Drew.
Shannon
I have Texas. But whoever wins this wins another game. In the big dance.
Matt Jones
Oh I'm going to go with Texas I think our SEC over ACC Texas and Maryland Baltimore County DraftKings parlay. We will see you tomorrow back from Kentucky this is Kentucky Sports Radio.

Host: Matt Jones and KSR Crew | Podcast: KSR (iHeartPodcasts & Sports Talk 790)
Episode Focus: Kentucky basketball postseason, Santa Clara matchup, UK athletics admin drama, and memorable meteor moments.
The KSR crew, led by Matt Jones, dives deep into pre-tournament anxieties, UK basketball’s upcoming clash with Santa Clara, fanbase nerves, and transparency (or the lack of it) from UK’s administration about recent contract deals. They balance the sports angst with their trademark humor and the wild, off-topic stories their audience loves—this time, the Cleveland meteor leads to a wide-ranging, comical discussion.
On Santa Clara "experts":
"The same people who were vaccine experts and who are weather experts have become Santa Clara experts."
– Matt Jones (11:54)
On the UK Administration declining tough interviews:
"If you only talk to people that agree with you, that’s the lamest thing in the world."
– Matt Jones (22:20)
On perspective about meteor strikes:
"Earth is so big you could hit and then it doesn’t even touch anything. So what are we worried about?"
– Drew Franklin (29:09)
On show format:
"It’s like a show for Kentucky fans, but about whatever I think Kentucky fans would be interested in about the world...It’s kind of about nothing."
– Matt Jones (32:56)
Hour 2 sees KSR in classic form: a deep dive into Kentucky basketball nerves, matchup analysis, and the dynamics between fans, school officials, and media responsibility. The lively crew ricochets from earnest sports debate into unplanned, yet hilarious, territory (the meteor hitting Cleveland). The mix of serious basketball talk, irreverent banter, and audience calls ensures rich entertainment and ever-present Kentucky flavor.
For UK fans, Hour 2 is both a pep talk and a group therapy session heading into March Madness—complete with space rock trivia.
