this is Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Now here's Matt Jones.
Welcome in to Kentucky Sports Radio. It is what, Tuesday, March 31, the last day of March.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
I am Drew Franklin filling in for Matt Jones off this week after watching a little bit of the NCAA tournament last weekend. He's off to who knows where as he takes a little time off. But I have Ryan Lemon with me here in the studio. Ryan, good to see you.
Ryan Lemon
Good to see you. Good morning. I texted with Matt a little last night and he said those two games he saw the best supporting events he's ever been to.
Drew Franklin
I was very excited about this.
Andy
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Very excited.
Drew Franklin
Did you text him on the a vision glass text machine?
Ryan Lemon
I forgot it again today.
Drew Franklin
That's okay. That's okay.
Ryan Lemon
You can use my cell phone, shout
Drew Franklin
out a vision glass.
Ryan Lemon
I have their text machine, but it's in a drawer in my house.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Okay. One day we'll get that out. You can call us on the Clark's pump and shop phone line, though. 859-280-22872287 spells cats, in case you forgot. 859280, Cats this show sponsored sponsored by TJ Smith. Ryan, what will TJ make him do?
Ryan Lemon
He'll make them pay.
Drew Franklin
By golly, we love some TJ Smith. We also love some Nick Roush who was here in studio with us today. Nick Roush is going to bring a little football knowledge to us. We've been locked in on March madness, but spring football has been going on. He's been dialed in. He's growling. He's ready to go. Nick, thank you for making the trip from Louisville. Tim Allen.
Nick Roush
I'm fired up. There's. There's football happening. It's been happening. We're on week Three of spring practice, and there's. There's a lot of grunting going over there. We saw a video last night of the offensive line coach. He dropped two lines that just. I was like, this guy, he's my guy. He said, the standard is the standard, which everybody knows the standard is the standard, but if we are. If we have a program where the standard is the standard, then the standard has never been more of the standard.
Drew Franklin
Big fan of the new. A new coach. Drive by his house every morning. Got a nice UK flag out there. I won't say anymore, but excited to have him in Lexington and all the new guys.
Nick Roush
He's a young guy, but an old soul. He comes from a coaching family, and he had guys doing up downs, and at one point in the video, he said, we're going to do up downs until somebody steps up and says, this is not how the. It's supposed to be done. I was like that. Yes. Football, we're back. So it's. It's fun. It's. It's new. There's a lot of newness going on over there in Wilson's program, but. But some things are still the same. There's still pads getting popped, there's still lots of grunts, and there's a lot of physicality over there. So I'm fired up to hang out, talk a little football with y' all today.
Drew Franklin
Heck, yeah. See, this is my first time I get to see Shannon as I just make my rounds, shouting out everyone on the show here. This is fun. I don't usually get to look at you or by Zoom or whatever this is, but this is a nice addition.
We're on Microsoft Teams. Is that George Strait on your shirt
Shannon the Dude
you got there today?
Commercial Announcer
Look at that.
Drew Franklin
I got dressed up today. Office is full of people that look important, and I'm. I'm dressed like a teenager. But we're gonna have a fun show.
Ryan Lemon
There are a lot of people out there today.
Shannon the Dude
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
What's going on? What's going on?
Nick Roush
I mean, I never seen so many people in this building before.
Ryan Lemon
Me neither.
Nick Roush
Are we in trouble?
Ryan Lemon
Like, every chair was full. What's going on? This.
Nick Roush
Ryan, what did you do?
Drew Franklin
I couldn't look more ridiculous in this outfit. When I walked in. I mean, I look like I got dressed in the dark.
Should have brought your cowboy hat. Today
we got a lot of news to get to. Some basketball, as we said, a lot of football. But first, this wasn't part of the plan, but a little public service announcement from Ryan Lemon. We were just talking as he came in these dang text messages going around about your. Your parking tickets and your tolls. They're out of control, Ryan. And I'm. I'm worried, you know, someone who might have been duped a little bit recently. I have friends who are wondering what's going on. We just want to remind everyone, these texts that are going out, they're spam. You're not really in trouble. They won't text you. They'll call you. But you had a. Another incident pop up.
Ryan Lemon
I'll go ahead and say. I mean, it was Josiah, and he got a text message saying that he failed to pay his speeding ticket. Had to be in court this morning. Well, he did get a speeding ticket in, like, November, and he went to driver's school, so I just thought, well, they didn't credit his account for going to driving school. He'll have to go and get that all straightened out. He shows up this morning, and they said, are you here to pay a speeding ticket? And he goes, yeah. He goes, it's a scam. We've had people come in all morning. So some. Some little robot was spitting out these text messages to everybody, all supposed to show up today. And he. There was like. There were several people show up today to pay a speeding ticket that was just all a scam.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I got one just last week saying my deadline for my payment for outstanding traffic infractions was. Was March 22nd. You know, I'm not paying that because it's a stupid text, but since you. You brought that up, I just want to remind everyone these are going around. I know lots of people getting these.
Ryan Lemon
You don't actually said, he got one.
Drew Franklin
I got one. Yeah, it says, notice of traffic violation. So I texted it back. This is a notice of a scam violation. You will be prosecuted. On theirs, it says, reply, why to reload this notice. Then the link above to complete your payment so that I reply back to them. Reply, why to reload your notice. This is your notice. Then tap the link to provide your payment, and then I click the link and sent a link with Mr. Rogers. Given the double barrel. There you go.
Nick Roush
We just.
Drew Franklin
We want to let people know now if you're actually on the run from the law. It's not our advice to run from the law. You're getting these text messages that are going around. Don't sweat it out.
Ryan Lemon
I guess they're going to public records and see who got a speeding ticket three months ago that's doing in court.
Nick Roush
Boom.
Drew Franklin
Now they're just getting random numbers. I Haven't gotten a speeding ticket like, well, knock on everything in, like, 15 years. I'm a. I'm a perfect citizen and I'm getting it. So I'm sure they've just Facebook price all of my phone numbers. They're just hitting us, all of us up. But that's for another time.
Ryan Lemon
There we go.
Drew Franklin
Let's get to the news. We're gonna lead off a little basketball. There was a big moment yesterday. Big, big hire.
Nick Roush
Yes.
Drew Franklin
On the Mark Pope stuff.
Nick Roush
Scoop from the person who was on the show yesterday.
Drew Franklin
That's right. Jack Pilgrim.
Ryan Lemon
Why do you break this? Break it during our show yesterday. He wanted to wait till it was later in the afternoon.
Drew Franklin
Well, you know, you gotta. You know, Ryan, you're a. You're a reporter at heart. You gotta confirm with your source, another source. Then he had to write up the story. Then we got to make the graphic. Nick's got to send out the newsletter on Twitter. Jacob's got to put it on Facebook. Zach's got to put it on Instagram. So it's a lot happening.
Ryan Lemon
But.
Drew Franklin
But it happened yesterday. First reported by Jack in the KSR team, Mo Williams, Cavs legend, NBA champ, NBA all star, former coach of Jackson State, will fill one of Mark Pope's coaching vacancies where Jason Hart and Coach Brooks left earlier this week. Obviously, his son Mason is the first commitment and the only player that we know of on next year's team after he committed last week. And I. I said on Friday, I didn't have the scoop like Jack. It was just drew wishful thinking into the universe. I was like, I hope they're considering old dad, because that would be a good package deal. And then here we are. Find out yesterday, Mo Williams is the new assistant coach. There was a lot of debate on the Internet yesterday. Some people didn't like it. I felt like I was working PR for Mo Williams. I'm actually going to send him an invoice for all the tweeting and writing and KS Borden I was doing. I'll get into why I like the higher first, because I wrote a lot of. Second, because I wrote a lot about it. But, Ryan, just your initial thoughts with Mo Williams joining the staff?
Ryan Lemon
The guy obviously has the pedigree, played in the NBA, won a championship with LeBron. I mean, he knows basketball, but I did see a lot of that, like, why are we taking Jackson State people and coaches, you know, trying to.
Nick Roush
I don't understand that. Because if you follow the carousel on either level, you will know that there are One of two ways to climb the coaching ladder. You can be a main assistant for one of these power conference coaches like Jordan Ganey at Tennessee, who got the job at NC State, or you can go to a smaller school and then join a staff as an assistant there, right? Like, you can climb this slow ladder like John Sumrall. He could have stayed at Kentucky for a while and then been like a defense coordinator somewhere and then hope to get hired. He was like, no, no, I'm going to go to Troy. I'm going to work my way up. Mo Williams, he tried doing the. He. He went to an hbcu. He went to the swac. He was there for a couple of years. He's not leveling up. This is a way to get back in the mix for some bigger jobs and also to be around with the sun. So this is a guy. I mean, he did. He knows ball.
Drew Franklin
Like, he knows a little bit of ball.
Nick Roush
He knows people in this world, too. That name comes with a little bit of cachet. And I like what Billy said on the pre show. He's also kind of cool. And I don't think if you looked at the Kentucky coaching staff, no offense to Mark Fox, right? Like, when you look at the guy, you are like, oh, man, that guy's cool.
Drew Franklin
Well, calm down with the swag there, bud.
Nick Roush
Yeah, yeah, easy. Mo Williams, you. You kind of got to say, whoa. Instead of giddy up, right?
T-Mobile Announcer
He's.
Nick Roush
He might have too much swag.
Drew Franklin
I wrote that. I didn't feel bad because I think it's fact. He is cooler than everyone on staff combined. And that's nothing against them. We knew when. When Pope took over for Cal, we traded some of the cool for some brains. Yes, we like the brains. We'll get those analytics working eventually, but now we have a little bit of cool back. Like, oh, yeah, he can walk into peach jam and properly execute, adapt. Like, I feel like we're. We're back on that level.
Nick Roush
Is there nothing more worrisome than when you go to dap up somebody who is clearly cooler than you and you're just like, don't. Please don't mess this.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Nick Roush
Because if you. If you. If you don't hit it right, like, sometimes if you hit it right and you get that, like that real pop, you walk away and you're like, all right, I got. I did good there. But then if you mess it up or you go like half handshake, half dab, it's. It can just. It can really wreck it. Wreck a day.
Drew Franklin
I Think I said this on Cover zero back when we were doing those at Super Bowl. But of all the fun we had at the super bowl, nothing made me happier than there's a video of me and Stevie Johnson and we dap and people replying, drew, that was the cleanest dap I've ever seen. And I've never felt cooler because normally I'm pretty awkward. Pretty awkward. But we got, we got some swag back on the. On the coaching.
Nick Roush
Definitely correct.
Drew Franklin
Also, I think it's very important to not gloss over his connections. He I know he's coached at Jackson State and I understand you all have seen the Jackson State record. Thank you for sending it over millions of times. I just want to let you all know we didn't hire him to be the head coach. And if you want to play the game of let's look at assistant coaches coaching record, don't look up some of your favorites. Not trying to throw strays here. Orlando Antigua, not the best coaching. John Robick, not the best coaching record.
Nick Roush
Masielo, he that's been pretty bad.
Drew Franklin
Mark Fox is on the staff. Not a great we're not hiring Mo Williams to be a head coach. So ignore the Jackson State record. And they played one home game in November and December at that school. That's just a different animal. They barely have nil money. They're always punching up. So I don't care about his record. I care about his connections. He had the Mo Williams Basketball Academy for several years. A couple alums. Julius Randall, ever heard of him?
Nick Roush
Pretty good.
Ryan Lemon
Pretty good player.
Drew Franklin
Washington ever heard of him?
Ryan Lemon
Another pretty good player.
Drew Franklin
All right.
Nick Roush
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
He has all these Mississippi connections. Josh Hubbard, whatever you think of him, he shared that yesterday. I don't know what that means, but
Nick Roush
it could mean something. It could mean nothing.
Drew Franklin
It could, but I just, you can feel my excitement. I says, as I said, I'm working PR for him. But I love the hire. I don't know that it's going to save Kentucky basketball. It's not a fix all by any means, but you had to hire somebody and I like the guy picked.
Nick Roush
I think the issue generally speaking with assistant coach hires, if you know something about them, it's probably bad, right? Because people, these coaches move all over the place. Like take for example, Kentucky special teams coach Parker Fleming. You have never heard Parker Fleming's name before in your life until he got hired by Kentucky. But then if you looked up an Ohio State message board from three years ago, you would see Ohio State fans are mad about their special teams Right. Like they're, they're. Same thing with Wolford. You didn't know Eric Wolford when he first got hired at Kentucky, but when he came back, you were pretty ticked off that they hired Eric Wolford. Right. That. That's how, that's the nature of assistant coaches. We don't, we don't know a ton about these guys, but if you do they, then you can poke holes. Sure, you can poke holes at Mo Williams head coaching. He's not coaching in the Swag anymore. He's. He's here to help get players to help out with point guards, to help out with guards. And I'm not exactly an NBA expert. I'm no Zach Gagan over here, Drew, but when I watched Mo Williams play basketball in the National Basketball association, he was pretty good.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, he was.
Nick Roush
So he might know a thing or two about ball that some of these other coaches on Mark Pop don't know.
Drew Franklin
I think we all agree point guard play is very important next year. I mean, we know how pivotal is the year it's coming up for Mark Pope. We know how important the point guard position is. Kind of like a Guy who has 13 years NBA experience kind of playing bigger than he was. A creative playmaker, if nothing else. Just the development of that position and some in game coaching, just getting these guys ready.
Ryan Lemon
See, that's why I think it was a good hire by Pope. Just that alone, just to be kind of helped the point guard mentor, you know, maybe guys want to come and learn from him. Guys want to, you know, maybe make that next step to make him eligible for the NBA. Play for a guy like that for a year, man. I think that'll help attract maybe some higher level point guard prospects.
Nick Roush
A lot of folks online were saying, well, why don't you go get Rajon Rondo? Listen, I love me some Rajon Rondo. Louisville guy, went to uk, won a championship, played a lot of years in the league. Have you seen his other stuff lately? Not exactly a guy you can hire now if you want to have him show up to the games and stuff. Cool. You want to recruit his son, cool. But don't think you can hire that guy right now to join the program. Mo Williams, he doesn't have those other things going on. He's just been in the SWAC for a while and the SWAC is a hard place to coach, to succeed. Can you name a coach in the SWAC that has succeeded? I can think of one Prom. Deion Sanders. He's like the only one. Everybody else there, Sean Woods, Got stuck there forever at Mississippi Valley State. Like Ed is a very hard place to win, is very underfunded and you know, now he's got big brand, he's got the Nike connections. The Nike connections probably don't matter as much as they used to, but they still matter and you know, maybe go get some Nike guys. When you're building a roster, it's a clean slate. All we know is Mason Williams is is out there.
Bombas Announcer
His.
Nick Roush
You were connected some dots, Drew. There's. There's another Jackson State guy that's out there.
Drew Franklin
There is. There's their point guard. Hit the portal. More importantly, Mo and Jamal Crawford are close. That's Tyrone Stokes, his assistant coach.
Nick Roush
Interesting.
Drew Franklin
What if we got Tyron Stokes and in the inter I said something like I love the Mo Williams connection. What if, what if something like that. I'm not saying it could happen but it's certainly not going to hurt bringing him on the staff right now.
Ryan Lemon
Nick said too though, he's amazing. Nike guy. Tyrone Stokes, one thing was Nike guy.
Drew Franklin
You reconnected to us also an SEC guy. I wrote this in my post. Some people might have forgotten.
Nick Roush
People do forget that as a freshman
Drew Franklin
under recruited starts every game at Alabama, you know what he does? He wins SEC freshman of the year and he beat number eight Kentucky in Rupp Arena. Now I know we're not hiring Mo Williams to play basketball, but he knows what it takes to win in the SEC as a guard and has that history too. So to put a bow on that, I'm not saying it might not even change the win loss record. Kentucky still has plenty of problems. I still have many concerns going into next year but you had to hire somebody with two open seats right now. And Ryan, I like that it's Mo Williams and we'll see how it pans out.
Ryan Lemon
Might look over across the way at Rupp arena and there's LeBron James coming back to Rup when you're watching a game, you know, with him and Mo
Drew Franklin
get on back in.
Ryan Lemon
Well, we'll take him back.
Drew Franklin
Back. Mario would I wish Mario were here to freak out over Bronnie. That was Mario's first reaction. Bronnie's gonna come.
Ryan Lemon
Ronnie's coming.
Drew Franklin
He took a big leap there.
Ryan Lemon
Ronnie's coming to rope.
Drew Franklin
That's our thoughts on Mo Williams and text messages about scams on your on your speeding tickets.
Ryan Lemon
Be aware that the message tech message scam about your money for a speeding ticket.
Drew Franklin
That should be the official psa. We should have recorded that to play every break. We'll take a break here. Drew Franklin, Ryan Lemon, Nick Rouse, Shannon. Drew Franklin
Yeah, well, I tuned in a little bit.
Andy
Okay.
Drew Franklin
You know, we don't have Kentucky boys in the mix.
Nick Roush
We have Kentucky girls in the mix though.
Drew Franklin
Boys, we're keeping a close eye on Tyron Stokes. He didn't do well last night. Three point contest announced tonight. No, no, he delayed it. But everyone's watching his every move.
Nick Roush
Every single move.
Drew Franklin
Every single move. I'm watching him right now on my phone. But on the girls side, plenty of cats.
Ryan Lemon
Yes.
Drew Franklin
Kenny Brooks with three players that will be in tonight's McDonald's All American Game. His entire recruiting class. Madden greenway. She's number nine overall and the number two point guard in the country. Savvy swords. Number 10 overall and the number three combo guard in the country. That's two top 10 players if you're
Nick Roush

Drew Franklin
She's a dual threat. Emily McDonald's who won the three point shootout last night.
Ryan Lemon
Nice.
Drew Franklin
They do the. Where the girls play the boys in the end. Won that one too.
Nick Roush
Nice.
Drew Franklin
So Emily McDonald won big. It was fun watching them. They'll be playing tonight and the big game on espn. I do not have the time. I know it's on espn. We'll call it seven. But look that up if you plan to watch it. But it's weird with Cal. You know, we just got used to tuning in and seeing his whole recruiting class. That's changed a little bit. But where. Where one side has nothing. Kenny Brooks stepped in and said, I'll put my whole recruiting class in there.
Ryan Lemon
I can't act like I know anything about the female game, but I heard Kenny Brooks talk about this Greenway, the point guard, like she is a superstar.
Nick Roush
Her dad was an NBA player, if I'm not mistaken. Chad Greenway for the Packers.
Drew Franklin
Vikings.
Nick Roush
Same right division, wrong team.
Drew Franklin
He might have done a lap around another team. Mostly a Viking, though.
Nick Roush
I'm not mistaken. Gotcha.
Drew Franklin
We'll be seeing a famous dad in the crowd a lot, but that's exciting stuff. Watch them tonight.
Nick Roush
I'm. I'm excited. In the world of women's sports at the University of Kentucky, did you hear where the Kentucky volleyball team is playing this year?
Drew Franklin
We kind of did a wani. Nah, nah. Breaking news yesterday, but we didn't really get into it. So let's just go ahead and tap into that now. The Wrigley Field game. It is the Sunday after Kentucky football's
Nick Roush
home opener against Youngstown State. That's correct. So Labor Day weekend, the lights are on at Wrigley Field. And I. We're a volleyball house at the Roush House. My wife. My wife, she was all conference player at the school down I 64. She was. She was a Cardinal Bird. But, you know, we just, we turn on the volleyball quite a bit at our house, especially like Friday night. Get a little Big Ten volleyball. Maybe we'll go. Cats are in action. We were locked in on that run in the national championship last year. And what's awesome is that Kentucky plays in all these big events.
Ryan Lemon
Yes.
Nick Roush
Like the AVCA first serve is becoming the new, like Chick Fil A Kickoff Classic or the New Champions Classic. They played Nebraska last year and they were up to nothing before falling the reverse sweep at Bridgestone Arena. But now they're getting an even bigger stage. And to play it at Wrigley, I mean, it was one thing when Nebraska, they did the outdoor game a few years ago and there's 90,000 people that showed up, but it's like Nebraska fans are crazy. We saw them Travel to Sweet 16 in Elite. Like, they go all out. This is Opening the door for the other fan bases to get an experience like this. And it's going to be awesome. They're playing Penn State, who won the championship two years ago. Kentucky beat them on Banner Night last year.
Ryan Lemon
Yes.
Nick Roush
So there might be a little bit of revenge at play. And the good news is, is Kentucky's bringing most of their core back. They obviously lost Eva Hudson, but Brooklyn Delay, she had off season knee surgery. She played most of the year with like a blown out knee and was still all SEC dominated. All sec. Molly Tuzzo is back. So should have a good squad and you're going to get a huge stage that. I mean just the, just the crowd shots of all that, like it's, it's going to be, it's going to be so cool. It's huge for the program. Very fired up for it.
Drew Franklin
Are you KSR's football beat writer or volleyball beat writer? Showing how much ball you know over there?
Nick Roush
I dabble. I also do the thing too where I will say something while watching it and I sound very confident in it and then my wife will just say, you're an idiot. You're so wrong. But you know what?
Drew Franklin
If I think that's called marriage, Nick, that happens to me. Whatever I'm talking about, about, I get corrected because I'm usually trying to, to say something. I don't know what I'm talking about. You know, since you do know ball though, this Wrigley Field aspect, outdoor volleyball, like does. I'm going to sound really dumb this wind come into play. I mean, any weather factors, is this going to be. Does the atmosphere affect it at all?
Nick Roush
Maybe on some sets, but I doubt it because they changed the rule in recent years and I think it's crap. There's no more doubles. So like it used to be when you set the ball had to be a knuckleball. They got rid of that rule. So any idiot like me can set now and I'm like, well, that takes away some of the, like you're, you're making it easier. Like it used to be hard to be a setter, to be able to hit that knuckle bar. Now they don't have the doubles anymore. So I think they'll be fine and I think they'll, they'll rip it, they'll get it done and be a great night for UK Volleyball.
Drew Franklin
That's Nick Rouse with Volleyball Talk.
Shannon the Dude
Look at that.
Drew Franklin
After this break and your phone calls on the Clark's Pump and shop phone line. This is KSR TJ Smith, personal injury attorney Call tj. He'll make him pay.
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Beautiful song, Shannon. Very topical with this lovely T shirt I pulled out of my closet. Back in the closet. Drew Franklin here filling in for Matt Jones with Shannon in Louisville studio who I get to look at through technology today. And then Ryan Lemon and Nick Roush here with me. We want to get to your calls on the Clark's pump and shop phone line. 859-280-2287. We'll talk about anything but with Nick. And we want to get your football questions. Football, I won't say has been ignored, but obviously March Madness has been the big story lately, even with Kentucky not making as far as we wanted to go. But a lot's been happening over the football facility. So call in, give a question to Nick.
Ryan Lemon
I've got questions for Nick.
Drew Franklin
All right, first up, we'll go to Ryan. Ryan, you're on with ksr.
Ryan Lemon
My. My friend Jeff Picoro that went to spring practice.
Nick Roush
Yes.
Ryan Lemon
Said the first thing he noticed, they're playing rock and roll music the whole practice. You like that or not?
Nick Roush
So Stoops played music too. Maybe their music doesn't get breaks. So I think the overall sentiment you will get from people who go to practice is just like, holy crap, there is a ton of energy in here. Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
He said it added a lot of energy and excitement.
Nick Roush
And it starts with. With the young coaching staff. That helps.
Ryan Lemon
Right.
Nick Roush
Like for a lot of these coaches, it's not their first crack at a big job, but for many of them it is. I mean, left which was at Oregon, but he wasn't the main offensive line coach. He was like a secondary one. Right. Tony Washington Jr. The defensive. The edge coaches, the pass retros coach. Similar story with him. But like these are young guys. They're fired up. They. They have a lot of juice. What did coach Stein say? Juice. Juiceful. Yes. Yes. Which. Another saying that makes total sense. Don't even. Don't even think about it. Juiceful is useful, but the biggest thing is the pace of practice and more.
Drew Franklin
Stewart.
Nick Roush
He's the only holdover from the last coaching step. The only Mark Stoops got. And he was. He said it's just boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Guess how many breaks that Mark Stoops his teams would take during a practice run.
Ryan Lemon
I'll say six.
Nick Roush
They would take three. Guess how many will Stan takes?
Ryan Lemon
I'll say six.
Nick Roush
00 breaks at all. If you want some water, wait while in your own line. And as Dan said, like, there's. Yeah, if it's hot outside during fall camp, they're probably going to take some more. Is it spring ball? Right. Like, you get in, you get your work done. They will have some. Some times of practice where they slow things down. They teach, so you can kind of catch your breath a little. But the pace of play, it's cranked up. And as they say, you want it to be kind of chaotic. You want it to be hard now. So that way when you're at Neon stadium and there's 100,000 idiots in orange screaming at you, you're used to a hostile environment. So that. That is the biggest change. There's a lot of changes. Just the tempo, the energy of practice. That has been a significant upgrade from this last year to this year.
Drew Franklin
I've talked to a few people who are also kind of holdover from the stoop staff. Not coaches, not Anwar, but, you know, secondary people.
Nick Roush
Right. Guys wearing the polos. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
And they're like, you know, we're here to help them because obviously we've been here a while. We can help with the changeover, but we're kind of just trying to keep up with them right now with all the energy. They're like, they are on fire in this building. And they're not coming out and saying it got a little stale or lazy or anything like that at the end. But they are like, we see an obvious difference in the end of last season and what is happening right now. And obviously Stein having his first job and.
Nick Roush
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
And being in their 30s, that's part of it. You know, you should expect that. But just the vibes over there are crazy right now. Which also I heard on the pre show. Shannon, you got a call, someone talking about the power case. Did I catch that on my way?
Yeah, yeah. There's a picture, I think, from Saturday of Will Stein with a power kick pullover or a hoodie. So I like it if he. If he wants to bring that back. I like that logo. Rather have that than the two birds making love logo.
Well, it's just me and you talking right here, right?
Yeah.
Let's get. Let's get ready for some Power K. Just going to warn you all.
Ryan Lemon
It's coming.
Nick Roush
His dad wore the Power K. You know, the last.
Drew Franklin
The last staff, they got the black and the chrome helmets 10 years ago. And they thought, well, we did an alternate. We'll just run those back every year. Will Stein's coming from Oregon. Will Stein got here and was like, where are my throwbacks where my alternates. I think we need to get ready for a lot of that coming our way.
Nick Roush
The other part about a first time head coach who's young, who's from the area is that he, he's not doing everything, but he's got his fingerprints on everything, right? Like he's not editing the videos that you see out there. But it's what he wants you to see. The message you're hearing from the coaching staff, it might not always come from him, but that's what he wants you to hear about these players. You don't hear a lot of individual shout outs, but he'll give a few here and there, right? Like it's very, everything is very intentional. And you see the trickle down in recruiting. They got a recruit yesterday from George Brian. Ludicrous way to spell Brian. B, R, Y, I A N. It's like his mom, dad, Brian. They didn't know which Brian to choose. It was like we like both Brian. So we're just going to combine it to one. So they got a jigger book from Georgia. They've gotten two players in the last three days. A ton of talented quarterbacks that come in. Andre Adams is the one that I'm monitoring. He's announcing his decision. I want to say April 11, that's around the corner. He's probably the clubhouse leader to be their quarterback commit and then you don't have to know much about recruiting to know that. All right, you get the quarterback in and then. Or dominoes start to follow. But they've had a lot of name players from all over the country. North Carolina, Texas, Louisiana. Four star kid from Baton Rouge was in on Saturday. That energy, that buzz that, that they're bringing with the new staff, it's attracting recruits to campus. Now the job is to close the deal. They weren't able to close on Jihad Brown who led the state in receiving last year at Cal. That is, that's, that, that, that's going to be a saga to continue to follow because your friend, the little pup, Drew, he, this, this is a very personal recruitment for him.
Shannon the Dude
I,
Nick Roush
I was there when he was recruiting Keonte Goodwin and he offered Jihad Brown as a seventh grader.
Drew Franklin
Oh, wow, that's early.
Nick Roush
So think about how long ago we were following the Keonte Goodwin saga. That's how long ago that he's been reading Jihad Brown. So like obviously Vince and Louisville, they've got a little bit of a leg up, but Kentucky's, you know, cooking the tires. One of his old coaches at Cal is on Stein Staff, they all know each other very well. Like Doug Beaumont played with Stein at U of L. And so Kentucky, they're, they're going to go show what they can do on the field. They'll probably have him to a game and it's, there's probably going to be some more twists and turns in this UK U of L saga. So just something to put a pin in for down the road. Won't be the last year.
Drew Franklin
Well, before we take your calls here, we should shout out the spring game coming up. Get some, get some butts in those seats. Saturday, April 18th. What is that? How many Saturdays is that from?
Nick Roush
It is two weeks from this Saturday.
Drew Franklin
There you go.
Nick Roush
11:00am kickoff. Now you have to get your tickets before you go. That's the one thing they're asking because they're doing construction to the stadium.
Drew Franklin
North side's getting a makeover.
Nick Roush
Yes.
Drew Franklin
Can't have people just wandering around the construction zone.
Nick Roush
New seats. They took the seats out. Their power. They're doing a lot of stuff over there. So you just, it's free, but you just got to call dibs before you go. Be got 11am spring game. You got 2pm baseball game. Could be a big one against Vanderbilt.
Drew Franklin
Love the double header there.
Nick Roush
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
So they warned like, don't wait till day of because the tickets that are free might be gone because of the capacity. So, like, if you think you're going hop on there and claim them now,
Nick Roush
just go ahead and do it.
DraftKings Announcer
It'll be.
Nick Roush
And here's the other part, too. They're going to play real football. Will Stein is big on. You get better. You get better at football. But playing football, it's a wild concept. Ron, I know it's hard. It's another one of these. It's hard to believe. But tackling, you can't get good at playing tackle football without tackling. So they're going to do that and they're going to throw it around the yard. And have you seen some of these clips, Ryan? Kenny Minche.
Ryan Lemon
Well, that's my next question. That's. Everybody wants to know about him.
Drew Franklin
We're going back to Ryan on the phone lines. Ron, question.
Ryan Lemon
Thank you for taking my call for longtime listener, first time caller, tell me about this quarterback. I didn't know anything about him until he committed to Kentucky. So that's, I think it all starts and ends with our quarterback.
Nick Roush
When I answer the question, I'm obligated to answer the question how every other person answers it, whether you're talking to somebody from Notre Dam, whether You're talking to Will Stein, whether you're talking to one of the receivers or any of them, the first thing they say is, he's a great guy, greatly. Like, they talk about the intangibles first, which I know for many of you out there listening, you're like, yeah, but can he throw the football? Like, I know he, but I just think that's not nothing. He's a good locker room guy. If you have the whole locker room behind your one leader when this offense is going to go through him, that's a good sign. The other good sign is he's very accurate. Accuracy is important. He puts the ball to where it needs to be. DJ Miller described it in many more words. He doesn't throw hospital passes. If you're going across the middle, he's going to protect you. And the quote that Stein said the other day, he said he was, he was talking to Joe Sloan. He was like, it looks like he's been in our offense for a long time. He's a cerebral player. He knows he's got it between the ears. He can move around well in the pocket if need be. I've heard some really good stuff about the offensive line, but. So, like, hopefully he's not running for his life. But so far, Kenny Minchi has been as good, if not better than Advertise. Now, what does that look like in the fall? I'm not willing to make a bunch of bold predictions that they're going to average 35 points a game and they're going to win nine games or eight games or even seven or six. I would like to watch the wide receivers that he's throwing to catch passes. I would like to see the running backs. How do they run behind this big blue wall that's been rebuilt, but so far, Kenny Minchee has been everything that you want him to be. Now here's, here's the other thing. There's some people out there, Drew, I know they're thinking themselves rash. We've heard you talk about how good these quarterbacks are every single year. Why?
Drew Franklin
You told me Zach Calzada was going to win the Heisman.
Nick Roush
You told me that he got his money, right? He did not get the Heisman. Why should it be different with Kenny Mitchie? I was actually talking to somebody who played against in high school. He coached at Houston, West Virginia, a few other places. And the way he put it, he's like, you can't be something you're not. You can't. Like what that Kentucky tried to do with Cutter Bowie. Last year. That's not what Mark Stoops does. It wasn't in his DNA. If you're going to throw the ball around the yard, if you're going to rely on your quarterback, put the game on his shoulders to win games, that has to be who you are 100% of the time. That has to be in your DNA. This is Wilson's DNA. It's putting, handing the keys, giving control to your quarterback to make big throws, to trust him to be a playmaker in difficult situations. That's in Kentucky's DNA now. That's being implemented as we speak over the Joe Craft football training facility. And it's exciting now, like I said, I don't know what that's going to exactly. It's going to look like in the fall against his top 10 schedule. I'm not going to go to church. I'm not scared. But I will say there, there is a. This should feel different when you're watching this offense operate.
Drew Franklin
Love that. Let's get to a couple calls real quick before we take this break, Shannon.
All right, let's go to Joe first. Hey, Joe.
Hello, Joe.
Shannon the Dude
Hey, gentlemen. Thank you, Nick. There's no secret about it. We have got to keep this young man healthy and strong when we play those Cardinals that on Labor Day weekend, we got to be able to. He's got to be having no concussions, no broken bones down the big blue line. That's everything. But, Nick, you're smart enough to know, do we have running backs that can block somebody? When you pass protection, do we have tight ends that could block and pass protection? Can we have a wide receiver, maybe pick up a corner blitz if he has to? I know most times they don't do that. But my point is, Nick, everybody blames those five offensive linemen if our quarterback gets down on the ground and can't get up. You play a lot of football? I play a lot of football, Nick. There's more than five offensive linemen. When they say eight or nine guys at our quarterback, somebody else has got to block those other four guys that are coming. So. Well, you just tell these fans out there in cat land, and sometimes when the quarterback is sacked, it's not maybe those five interior lines that gets all the blame. It might be a running back. And I mean, I just get so upset when everybody blames the five offensive alignment. Now, sometimes it is their fault. A lot of times it's a running back or somebody else. And you tell Mr. Drew there in the red light, I misspoke the other Day, Drew, we're not going to baptize you. We're going to perform an exorcism on you. And I thought just on that red lot, that can do it. I mean, if we'll get that. We'll get that jinx out of you. No problem. Thanks a lot.
Drew Franklin
Thanks, Joe. Thanks for calling. I'm excited to be exercised. I don't even exercise, so that sounds like a lot of fun. Coming up in the red lock, you
Nick Roush
have your up downs with the.
Drew Franklin
Whatever Joe wants to do. I'm in keg stands exercise.
Ryan Lemon
The standard is the standard.
Drew Franklin
That's right. Useful is useful.
Nick Roush
The good news is, is that one of those offensive linemen that's going to be blocking for Kenny Minchi. He was all SEC last year at Tennessee. It's a little bit different when you're getting all Conference USA guys versus all SEC guys to be your left tackle, so that helps a lot. Colton Price, the center, he's played a ton of football. He is a grown man. I mean, like that guy. He's got the goatee.
Andy
Like.
Nick Roush
I mean, he. He looks like a grown ass man. But as far as other ones, I mean, he's right. Sometimes it's on the quarterback, too. You got to be hot. You got to get the ball out of your hands. The good news, at least from the running backs and pass protection standpoint, I don't know this be true, but they've all played a lot of football, so it shouldn't be deer in the headlights when they're asked to pick up a blitz in a situation like that.
Drew Franklin
All right, we'll get more to your calls after this break. I want to talk a little tv, too. I've wrote down a few TV things to get to. I know people want to hear football, but I got to talk about something happened last night. Something last night show I'm into. A new old show I'm into. So some TV talk coming up, too. We're gonna hear from you on the Clark's Pump a shop phone line. 859-280-2287. We'll be right back after this.

Shannon I'm throwing off today. We're in a different studio downtown because the one we're normally in is getting new fancy things for our cover. 0 new cameras, lights, new cameras in there just getting big time. So we're in this new spot. I'm looking at the world's tallest building outside this window. It looks beautiful in downtown Lexington and I just looked to my right and there's a screen that has caller's names that blew my mind that that existed and I see there's an Andy on there. Is that our guy Andy? Is that the Andy?
That is our Andy.
Oh we got. Let's just jump right in With Andy, can't. Can't have him waiting any longer. Andy, how you doing, my friend?
Andy
Man, I'm. I'm doing pretty good. I. It's been a whirlwind of the last seven days around here, but, you know, we're just kind of taking one thing at a time and trying to move forward.
Drew Franklin
Well, I hope you have the right attitude. I know life threw you a curveball here recently, but we've been thinking about you and praying for you. Hope things going well. Are you able to. Have you been keeping up with anything beyond that, or is that kind of been consuming your life here lately? You know, we got. Our Braves have started. They're looking good, and there's a lot of exciting things going on, but I know your. Your life has taken a big turn lately.
Andy
Yeah, I've still been. I've called all the Braves games and stuff, even when, you know, that's more a nighttime thing for the most part. But, yeah, I was it. It's been a lot to take in. I just wanted to call in, though, when I don't have a doctor's office calling me today and just let everybody know that I do appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers and messages that they sent, and it means a lot, and I'm just grateful for that and have everybody supporting me. And I def. I most certainly feel the love. And, sir, I found out surgery is April 27, and they're going to go in there and try to get everything out. And if they don't, you know, then you play the what if game, which try not to do, but that it showed that it's. It's not spread. So that's a good thing.
Ryan Lemon
Dude, you know, we love you, man, and I'm glad you got to feel that love from bbn. You know, there I was hoping somebody either read those text messages to you or the tweets or you could hear it on your Siri, because people, dude, you're one of our favorites. You're not just one of our favorites, you're one of BBN's favorites. So you got a lot of love, a lot of strength, a lot of people behind you, man. So you just keep fighting the good fight.
Andy
I will. And I'm just, you know, just gonna go on as. It's just weird thinking you got cancer because you really don't feel like it. You know what I mean?
Drew Franklin
Well, we didn't know how much you want to share, but we appreciate you giving us updates there and hope you'll continue to do it. What you Feel, feel comfortable talking about. We love. We love hearing from you, buddy. And I know you've been overwhelmed with messages. There's a lot of people that care about you and thinking about you and wishing for the best.
Andy
Oh, yeah, guys, you know I'm an open book. I went on Jared Springer 20 some years ago. But, hey, man, I just wanted to call. I'll let y' all get back to the football talk. And today I just wanted to call in real quick. One side, you know, knew certain stuff, everything. Just wanted to let everyone know that I, I certainly do appreciate everyone's love and kindness and it means a lot.
Nick Roush
Keep fighting the good fight, Andy.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, hang in there, Andy. Love that you got the right attitude. You'll be on the other side of this. We can't wait to hear from you again.
Andy
Oh, yeah, we'll be. We'll be doing fireball shots in no time.
Drew Franklin
All right, Only if your doctor allows. But if you get. If you get that slip signed, I'll rip a fireball with you.
Shannon the Dude
You.

Chelsea Handler
This is Chelsea Handler from. Dear Chelsea, after the big game, like most people, I kept thinking about the commercials. And there was one that stayed with me. It was from the Blue Square Alliance Against Hate. And it wasn't loud or flashy. It showed a Jewish kid being targeted at school and another student who chose not to ignore it. As someone who was Jewish, that moment felt very real to me. Not dramatic, just familiar. And what struck me was how clearly it showed that hate doesn't always announce itself, but the impact is still huge. If you saw the blue square spot during the big game, it's worth thinking about. And if you want to show support, sharing the blue square is one small way to do that.
