do it, so he had already had success at Arizona.

At least he'd had 1 Sweet 16.

But you'd had a hard time. I mean, one of the things to think about for all these guys, like, take Tommy Lloyd or even T.J. otzelberger. North Carolina tried to hire both those guys.

So, I mean, maybe we would have had more success than North Carolina.

And to be honest, we don't really know. Maybe Mitch Barnhart threw a feeler out there to Tommy Lloyd, and Tommy Lloyd shut it down pretty quick, so he moved on to the next guy.

Maybe. I don't know. Kyle Tucker said on my podcast that Mitch. He thought Mitch had for three or four years, assumed Scott Drew would take the job. They become, I guess, the year Scott Drew won the national championship. Mitch Barnhart was the head of the selection committee that year, and that was the bubble year. So they spent all that time in the bubble together, and he grew really close to him.

I'm going to all these towns in the state and asking to meet fans. I want to get to know this state for real. Like, really go out and get to know not just the. Not just the donors. Go see what fans are like in Madisonville and Paducah in Northern Kentucky, in the mountains, in, you know, in Lexington. Go. Go meet the fans and meet them, touch them, make them get to know you. Because Mitch Barnhart, they can say all they want that he talked. He didn't go out and meet the regular fan. He, like, they need to go and do that. And then so that people feel a connection to the person running their university.

It's actually an excellent idea. Get to know why people love this university. Because you can't so much.

[Matt Jones]

You and I get an advantage that very few people do. I'm not gonna say we know the fan base better than anybody, but there ain't. Because we go everywhere, right? You and I talk not only to the people that are given the most money. We are in every town. I mean, you and I have been to. We've done shows in, like, 88 of the 120 counties. I've been to every county. The ad needs to do that. Cal did a lot of that in the early years.

He did.

He did a lot of that because of his book tour. He went to all those place. I just think you get a sense more when you are out amongst them of what this means to people, and I think that would be very important. And people appreciate it. They appreciate it. This fan base wants to not, like, physically touch you, but almost metaphorically touch you. And I think that's important.

One of the best things Cals did when he took the championship trophy on that bus tour, it was great.

[Matt Jones]

And there were crowds everywhere. And there weren't just crowds where we stopped. There were crowds when we would pass places on the road. And it's like, you can say you get it, but until you see it and feel it, it's not the same.

Oh, interesting. Okay, I appreciate. I. I got that. That makes sense. I. You know, it is interesting. The whim. The ladies of KSR Facebook group. I've gone on there a lot of days to read what they're saying. They are much, much, much more supportive of Pope than the average male caller or listener. Like, I think Pope's approval rating with the women part of our fan base is. Is really high. Like, I know my mom, for instance. My mom really likes Mark Pope and kind of doesn't particularly like when we criticize. She doesn't say that to me explicitly, but I can just kind of tell. And I think that's kind of interesting. It feels like. Do you think there are women in our fan base pretty much universally are pro Pope?

[Shannon]

I think so. I think it's because he's Such a good person.

Is that what you think it is? It's like it's. He's such a good guy that you

can overlook his deficiencies. Maybe as a coach or recruiter.

That won't last forever. But that. But that. I do think that's true now.

There are a ton. 772-774-5254 are mostly women saying, yes, we are much more pro pope than the men. There's a couple people disagreeing. Couple women disagreeing. But. But I do think again, that's something most people believe that whatever their opinion is is representative of the fan base, whatever that opinion is. And I think you really do have to sit there. What I say to some people is, okay, now just take a step back. What percentage of UK fans are on Twitter? Probably not more than 15 or 20.

[Shannon]

Right.

[Matt Jones]

What percentage of UK fans are women? Probably 40, 45.

[Shannon]

Half. Yeah.

[Matt Jones]

Yes. What percentage are old? What percentage are young? And so whoever you are, you can't represent all of those people. I mean, think about like when you, when a post goes up, Mario will put a post up on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok. Without question, Facebook gets the most comments and the strongest amount of attention. But I don't know one person that uses Facebook as their primary means of social media. But there are a ton of people that. That's their only social media.

[Shannon]

Oh yes.

[Matt Jones]

It's not me and who I hang out with, but those people exist.

[Shannon]

They absolutely exist.

[Matt Jones]

And there might be more of them than there are everybody else. But then you have people Mario's age who the only social media they use is Tick tock and Instagram. No woman goes. Very few women go on Twitter. Very few women are on Twitter in the grand scheme of things, but. And very few men are on Instagram, you know, so it is, it is kind of interesting how like what you think our fan base thinks to some extent is what medium you digest the information.

[Shannon]

Yeah.

[Matt Jones]

You know, if you only went on KS board, that's a hardcore set of male, somewhat older fans and you would think this fan base is very negative if you only went on that. But then if you went on Tik Tok, it's a lot more positive usually. So it just, it just depends. Everything is different.

[Shannon]

Just for me looking outside, looking in, it seems like men more to put vitriol on the social media account than women.

[Matt Jones]

Oh, no doubt about that. No doubt about that. I will say for me, this is just me and I'm not saying this is 100 correct. I think the most accurate representation of the fans to me is the. Our text machine. Because I think it gets everybody, I think that, I think it gets every kind of person. It's anonymous, but because people have their phone numbers attached, they tend not to be as mean because I have their phone number and I think you get the best, well rounded view. And this, for the most part, it's all over the place. So that's why I find it so interesting the older I get. It's what I use more and more to decide what I'm gonna listen to.

[Shannon]

Well, I felt like this show really reaches a cross section of our fan base. Old, young, black, white.

[Matt Jones]

There is no medium that reaches more different types of people. You know, when we had that cup that, that we were at that show a couple weeks ago and it was a great grandfather, grandfather, mother and son, four generations sitting there listening.

[Shannon]

Yep.

[Matt Jones]

Where else is that happening outside of the games?

[Shannon]

Right.

[Matt Jones]

You know, the answer is is is nowhere to see what Kyle Tucker said to Seth Greenberg, I did see that. That was great.

Seth Greenberg was like, of course we should expand the tournament. Of course we should have 76 teams. Why are people being such Blah, blah, blah. And Kyle Tucker was like, yeah, if I was on the bubble every year, I'd have said that, too.

Yeah. He said, I think if I hadn't made the tournament. I think he went and he said that, didn't he? If I had made the tournament, I would say that also because.

[Matt Jones]

Because that really would. They should call the bubble, Shannon, the Seth Greenberg bubble. Yeah, because he was on it every single year.

And now you're going to get 17 and 15 Auburn teams in there. They're going to throw in.

[Matt Jones]

I hate that they expanded it. I mean, we'll get used to it. It'll probably be fine, but I hate it. I don't think. I think you're just going to end up with a bunch of mediocre teams in there. You know, I mean, there might be years like, like think about 2013 with Neurolence. If it was 76, we'd been in.

[Shannon]

We'd have been in. Right?

[Matt Jones]

We'd have been in. So, you know, did that team deserve to be in? Probably not, but that's the way it's going to be now. So I don't think it makes the regular season meaningless, but I do think it will make games like Kentucky had a couple games that they had to win at the end of the year last year. I don't think that's. I don't think that'll be true because,

you know, they're going to be in.

[Matt Jones]

They. I mean, last year in the sec, probably everybody would have been in except like South Carolina and, you know, they probably would have 14 teams in. In this system.

This first year is going to be big for them. They've got to get some good matchups and they've got to get some good locations and it's got to work this

first year and it's unfortunate. Like, they're not going to be able to play all those games in Dayton. No, they're going to have to play them in a couple different spots and that'll lose some of the magic.

I want to end with some positivity on Mark Pope and where the roster is now. I think the backcourt isn't as good as we were, but I think they're good enough. I think they're going to get it done. I think the front court is actually going to be better than what we saw this year. Not because they're necessarily more talented, but because they fit into Pope's system better. And I think Brad Hawthorne is actually going to surprise a lot of people and by the 10th game of the season he's going to be a starter and he is a future NBA draft pick. Thanks for taking my call.

Yeah, I appreciate it. Here's my take on let's say we add nobody to the roster. All right, let's say, I mean, we'll add a couple guys, but let's say we had no one of substance. Let's say that the say you add this kid from Israel and really that's it in terms of big time play. Maybe you had one or two dudes at the end. I actually think the roster as it sits can be better than the team we just had. But I don't think we'll ever during the season think the team is a contender. So that's what I think will be tough for this fan base. I don't think we're going to be awful. I think people look at it and go, we're going to actually think you can match the two rosters up and say we can be better. But the thing about last year's team was really, until Jalen Lowe got hurt the last time, we kept thinking, they can still do it. Yes, this can still be a contender. I don't know that we're going to think that next year's team can be a contender.

I think from the beginning of the season, I think you're exactly right. We all know this is not a

I think they can be as good or better.
