this is Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage now here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome, everyone. Kentucky Sports Radio Friday, May the first. I am Matt Jones. It is Oaks Day in Kentucky, the start of Derby season weekend. Also the first day of the 2nd, 3rd of the year. And also Billy's birthday. Happy birthday to Billy.
Ryan
Happy birthday, Billy.
Matt Jones
I noticed Shannon didn't clap.
Shannon
Clark's Tommy Shop, 30 seconds.
Matt Jones
Phone line 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254. In this dish and sponsored by the T.J. smith Law Office called TGL. Make them pay. Billy, how old are you?
Billy
31.
Matt Jones
31 years old and getting married in August, right?
Billy
That's right. I've got the reversible quarter zip on today, so it is a festive occasion.
Matt Jones
That's your. That's your Oak skier?
Billy
Yeah. I'm not going to the Oaks today, but this is just. Just what I'm wearing.
Matt Jones
All right, now, you two, you and Mario are both going to the Derby.
Billy
Big day tomorrow.
Ryan
That's right.
Matt Jones
Mario's job is to get social media content. Your job, as I understand it, is to interview the jockeys so that you can be around somebody your height.
Billy
Hold on now. Like, I'm not that short. I'm 5 10. That's average build. But yes, I will be in the infield interviewing the drunkest people that you see and the jockeys in the pedagogy.
Matt Jones
So I think I ask you this a lot. How many years have you interviewed the jockeys?
Billy
This would be my third year doing it.
Matt Jones
And what have you had? Have you gotten a rapport with them? Like Irad Ortiz? Does he see see you and go, what up, Billy?
Billy
So the last two years, I've interviewed the winner before the actual race. So Brian Hernandez Jr. Won on the.
Matt Jones
You only interview one jockey all day?
Billy
No, no, I interview about like, five. But, like, I've gotten the winner.
Matt Jones
That's. I mean, Shannon, if he gets five.
Shannon
Yeah, just get on the.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, if you get all of the jockeys, you're going to have interviewed the winner at some point, but
Billy
then you can replay that interview and say this was the Derby winning jockey. So Brian Hernandez Jr. My guy is out there.
Matt Jones
Why is it easier guy? What he said we have a close rapport.
Billy
And then bowling. And then Junior Alvarado won it on Sovereignty last year and I interviewed him. So.
Matt Jones
So who. Who are you going to interview this year?
Billy
I have no clue. It's usually just whoever I make, like, awkward eye contact with.
Matt Jones
And then has anyone turned you down? Yes. Who?
Billy
The non English speaking jockeys.
Shannon
That's probably.
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, that's understandable. They don't understand if they don't know. Do you think any of them though are faking the fact that they don't know English so they don't have to talk to you?
Billy
I hope not. That would be.
Shannon
I try to do that on the pre show. It doesn't work.
Matt Jones
Yeah, like. Like who is it? There's. There were some baseball. They said Ellie was doing that his first year. Ellie kind of could speak English, but kind of couldn't. And then like when he doesn't want to talk to somebody, he'd be like, yeah, no English.
Ryan
Especially after a bad game, you don't sit there and talk about it. I don't understand.
Matt Jones
Well, you, you could maybe bring a translator because you. Because I, I would assume there are multiple jockeys now that don't speak English. Right?
Billy
There. There are several there. There are several that'll be making their Kentucky Derby debut tomorrow. Like who?
Matt Jones
Give it. Give me. Who the. Some of them.
Billy
I don't know it off the top.
Matt Jones
Okay, so you're not really prepared.
Billy
I'm prepared, but like, I don't think you have to have. Know a bunch about horse racing to be able to give a good interview. I mean, we can.
Matt Jones
What do you ask the jockey?
Shannon
How you feeling?
Billy
Like how.
Matt Jones
That's a terrible question. Yeah, I mean, that's like that. Yes, you're right. Anybody could do that. But that's like saying anyone could do anything badly in order to do a good interview. Well, you know, so I think you would probably go up and go. So like whatever jock. Who's on Renegade. Do we. What's the jockey on Renegade? Because I know it's a favorite go up and go.
Billy
They're not sure on that.
Matt Jones
All right, so you're on the derby mount for Renegade today, the favorite. You drew the poll. That's obviously something that people say is a negative. How are you going to make this a positive today?
Billy
I like that. I like that question.
Matt Jones
Or you can look at him and go, how are you feeling?
Billy
How's the track running right now? It's a little muddy out there. Will that change your speaker in the race?
Matt Jones
It's not going to be raining.
Billy
Well, it was last year, Matt. I'm just saying, trying to let you know how I get into the mind of the jockey for the WH interview. But these guys, like, they want to be interviewed. Right? Like this is. It's not like a coach giving coach
Matt Jones
speak so have you gotten to talk to Irad Ortiz? He's famously prickly.
Billy
I have not. He is.
Matt Jones
You got to talk to Shannon.
Shannon
He's.
Matt Jones
He's avoiding that. He's avoiding the prickly one.
Shannon
That's who's going to be on Renegade.
Matt Jones
So Iraq. So perfect. You got to interview Irad. He's on Renegade. I don't know if he speaks English, but I know. I'm sure he speaks it a little bit. And he is the favorite. And he's known as the prickly guy. If you don't come away with an Irad interview because, you know, people. Some people think he cheats.
Billy
Oh, I didn't know that.
Shannon
So you got Billy, if you. Some research, if you were serious about this, you would learn their language.
Matt Jones
That's right. You should learn basic Spanish.
Billy
I'm not here to bring up his cheating allegations, though.
Matt Jones
So dande la biblioteca. And they'd go, what? Why are you asking me where the library is? But that's. You know, you gotta. You gotta have something. You better interview Irad Ortiz.
Billy
I'll get Irad.
Matt Jones
I'm gonna be very disappointed because he is the. You know, some of these jockeys, he'll hit them with the whip.
Shannon
That's not very nice.
Billy
That's out of bounds. But I'm not bringing that up. Matt, we're not talking about whipping other jockeys.
Matt Jones
I would say Mike Wallace would bring it up, Ryan, don't you think?
Ryan
Well, this is not 60 minutes. This is wha. At the track all day on Derby Day. Let's go to Billy over the jockeys.
Matt Jones
If you interview Irad Ortiz, text me.
Billy
I will send the hopefully video. If Mario is able to get a
Matt Jones
couple shots, get him and Irad Ortiz. I think that would be exciting. All right, so today is. Is Oaks Day. That means a couple things. First of all, UT Big Hair is going to be on. Shannon believes he's going to finally this year get a horse right.
Shannon
No, I don't. He's never gotten a horse right in all these years on ks.
Matt Jones
He really hasn't. I think, you know, he wins, Ryan, the National Handicap Contest, but he never wins on this show.
Ryan
He's been making derby picks and oak
Matt Jones
picks and Breeders cup picks on this show, and I don't think he's ever gotten one.
Shannon
I wait for his picks. Don't pick. Not picking that guy.
Matt Jones
But I feel this is going to be his year.
Ryan
So we're going to bring him back for one more crack at it.
Billy
No, no, no.
Matt Jones
I'm Bringing all time.
Ryan
I think Kentucky Joe should call in.
Matt Jones
Well, Kentucky Joe is actually on hold. Nice. Perfect.
Ryan
I already on Joe's picks over big
Matt Jones
head Joe's one a couple times. Yes. He has big hair's one no times. So. So we will have them on. I'm taking the view today. Like this is a pot. This is. Like this is also giveaway day. So I have. Here's what I have to do. I have to give away three things. I'm going to go from what I think is the small, the smallest of the biggest. We have two tickets to give away to Theo Vaughn at the Lexington Opera House.
Shannon
That's what I hear.
Ryan
Yeah. You almost caused a fight on the pre show this morning.
Matt Jones
Why?
Shannon
Because those Theo Vaughn tickets were supposed to be for the pre show and you came in and just took them from us.
Matt Jones
I didn't take them. I asked Billy Forum Wednesday.
Shannon
Well, I found out a minute before we go on the pre show.
Matt Jones
Why didn't you tell your co host I was taking. I was taking the pre show.
Billy
I didn't know he would base the entire show on a game to give away those tickets. I thought he might bring in three or four topics besides the entire shows based around those tickets.
Caller - Morris/Timothy/Bluegrass/J
But.
Matt Jones
Okay, you two are going to have to go to council.
Caller - Morris/Timothy/Bluegrass/J
All right.
Matt Jones
I can't. I can't enter. I can't be here to watch you two fight.
Shannon
GM are you.
Matt Jones
That hurts me. So. So we're going to do the. Oh, you've got the. Okay, then I've got a four pack of good seats for Smackdown Friday. So you can bring your. Your family or your friends or your. Or your girlfriends, whatever. For Smackdown here in Lexington. A four pack at Rupp arena they call it a family four pack.
Shannon
Okay, Is that denial? When is that? When is that?
Matt Jones
That is Friday, May 22nd.
Shannon
Okay.
Caller - TJ
All right.
Matt Jones
And then finally the big prize. This is a big prize. We haven't given away a lot of prizes of this size away in a while. I'm giving away a team to the KSR Golf skirt.
Ryan
Oh my.
Shannon
Wow.
Ryan
Wow.
Matt Jones
A team. This is a big prize.
Caller - Morris/Timothy/Bluegrass/J
Yes, it is.
Ryan
That's usually it's hard to get in the KSR golf.
Matt Jones
Well, this year I asked them to save me two. We'll give one more away in a few while. And which scrambles is for the one in Lexington.
Ryan
Okay.
Billy
You club.
Caller - Morris/Timothy/Bluegrass/J
Right?
Matt Jones
You club. So I'm going to give away a team to the KSR Golf Screen Big. So the question is going to be how are we going to give these away And I don't really have an answer for that question, but I'm gonna figure it out as we go. Okay. Yeah.
Ryan
Well, you know, Shannon's contest went so well this morning.
Matt Jones
Well, yeah, Shannon. People kept sending me horse names.
Ryan
No prize.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So you did the contest with no prize?
Shannon
Well, we thought we didn't have anything else, but then, you know, we didn't have anything.
Ryan
I was trying to get.
Matt Jones
Wow, you did a great. A contest with no prize.
Caller - Morris/Timothy/Bluegrass/J
What?
Shannon
I had it if somebody didn't take them from us.
Matt Jones
Well, I've got them and I have no contest.
Shannon
Hoarded all the tickets and have no way to give them away. Great job.
Matt Jones
Well, you know what? That's the way it goes. Now, I have a lot of small topics here. The goal today is to sort of be. To be like uplifting. Not so much. Like we're going to have to act like whatever's happening with. With basketball or whatever is great, but just we're going to try to stay on uplifting topics because it's Friday and it's Oaks Day and it's Billy's birthday and I won't do that. But before we do that, I do have to talk about one story that is sad but also fascinating.
Ryan
Okay.
Matt Jones
Which was, you know, there was a bank robbery yesterday.
Ryan
Oh, yes.
Matt Jones
In Berea. There was a bank robbery on. Two people killed. Which is like when I think of Bay. I didn't know people still did bank robberies. Like when's the last time you've heard of us of a bank robbery robbery?
Ryan
Like, you know, maybe one a year in Lexington around here. Some guy walking.
Matt Jones
But never one a year in Lexington.
Ryan
But they always catch the guy like within minutes and it's no big deal.
Matt Jones
Not think there's one a year in Lexington.
Ryan
Close to it.
Matt Jones
I feel like that would make the whole banking game in Lexington much.
Ryan
Yeah, there's several that they.
Matt Jones
Shannon, do you remember one a year in Lexington?
Shannon
No. But now I'm curious to find out how many on average there are in Lexington or just in general.
Matt Jones
Why are we focusing on. This one wasn't even Lexington. This one was in Berea.
Ryan
Tight knit community. It's sad.
Matt Jones
I know, it's very sad. Two employees.
Ryan
Yes.
Matt Jones
But then the guy got away for a little while. So I was about to try to get on the interstate last night at like 9, 10, and they had blocked it. You couldn't get on. And they said it's not safe to go on the interstate right now. And I was like, why? Because there were still cars going by and they were like, there's about to be a high speed chase. And literally while I was sitting there trying to turn on the interstate, 15 police cars going 120 miles an hour were just one after another flying down the interstate.
Ryan
Wow.
Matt Jones
And then I assume they were chasing somebody, although I didn't see that car. And then I heard like a few minutes later that somewhere they had like cornered the person and I guess they've been arrested. Is that correct?
Ryan
I think it was like. It was like.
Matt Jones
So I'm assuming this was the same thing. Yeah. Because I know they went on a chase, but maybe it wasn't. I don't know.
Ryan
But something I saw on social media, there was a. An incident on off Bryan Station Road that was related to that bank robbery. I don't know if that was when they.
Matt Jones
So that maybe. Maybe that wasn't what the high speed chase was.
Ryan
Well, maybe he got off the interstate
Matt Jones
and went to Bryan Station Road. Yeah, well, you know, sad situation.
Ryan
Very sad.
Matt Jones
I didn't. I just had no idea that that was still a thing people tried to do. How do people think they're going to get away with that? Do Shannon? People get away with it?
Shannon
I think sometimes. But today.
Matt Jones
You mean people get away with bank robberies in 2026. I mean I know like Wild Bill Hickok would do it.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
But in 2026, do people get away with it?
Shannon
I think some people probably have. There were looks like.
Matt Jones
I mean according to Ryan, there's one every week somewhere in.
Shannon
Okay. According to some quick research, there were two last year in Lexington.
Ryan
But they're usually not real successful. They. Because they got the camera catches the guy and somebody will call and say, I know who that guy is.
Billy
And well, yeah, it's 2026. There's cameras everywhere.
Ryan
Yeah.
Billy
I mean it's fascinating to think people
Ryan
get away with even the exploding dye pack and the money they give them, you know, they got it still.
Matt Jones
So they do the exploding die path.
Billy
Yes.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So why do people think they can do it?
Ryan
Desperate.
Billy
Not in the right frame of mind if you're going to do something like that.
Matt Jones
Well, sad story. So prayers to everybody in Berea. They have caught the person.
Ryan
Now they said it was an arrest, but had they come out and said it was the definite. The bank robber.
Matt Jones
I don't know. Who? I don't know. They didn't tell me either. I will say, Shannon, I went to the Herald Leader today.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
To read about it. They didn't even have a story on it. Well, I had to go to. I went to. Wow, they had it. But like, how do you not have us? I mean, I understand. I don't blame the writers at the Herald Leader because they've been bought by this multinational corporation and they're just stripping it. So I don't blame it. But has there not a story berea
Ryan
right down the road?
Matt Jones
Like, I don't understand how that didn't get in there. I mean, maybe it's there now, but earlier this morning it wasn't and I didn't understand that. But anyway. 859-280-2287. The tax machine is 772-774-5254. We've got a lot of stuff to get to. We're gonna give away this stuff. Oaks Picks and Billy's birthday. Oh, yeah, I forgot to get you a press.
Billy
I didn't expect one. It's okay.
Ryan
I gotta. I got a diet Coke in the fridge I can give you.
Matt Jones
I actually had it written down. I'm gonna get Billy a present.
Shannon
Give him the ovon tickets.
Matt Jones
Exactly. Would you like to take a family of four to smack? We'll be right back.

That's innerbalance.com welcome back Techie Sports Radio. 859-280287. Text machine. 772-774-5254. So I guess the. The high speed chase was related to bank robbery. The guy crashed out next to Bryan Station road and then took off on foot.
Ryan
That's what it was. Okay, so. And you saw the police officers?
Matt Jones
I saw the car. They were flying. I mean like, and what. And I. They were trying to keep other people from like going into the interstate. But there were people who were already on this interstate who I assume, you know, I get, I get it. I guess if their officers going 120, they don't want people trying to merge onto the interstate. Yeah, but I couldn't believe how fast. And it was just one. It was, it was one after another. Just ton of cars. And I guess he must have crashed not very far. Really close. I was getting on. On Newtown. So I had to be really like I really could have been right in
Ryan
the middle of it.
Matt Jones
Yeah. So I guess thank you lady for not making me let me go on the road. Apparently there are 2,000 bank robberies in America a year. But in 2019 there were 18,000. So that's a huge go. That's like a huge decrease over the course of years.
Billy
I think you just have to imagine that technology's too good nowadays to do something like that. I'm surprised the number's that high.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
One person, right? Billy mentioning cameras everywhere reminds me of the absurdity of Nancy Guthrie still not being found. That's yeah. Unbelievable to me, Shannon, that they never were able to find that one.
Shannon
I mean, they got that ring doorbell camera, and really that's the only thing that they have, is that video.
Matt Jones
And the guy just looked like a goober. He just had a sock on his head. And he somehow got away.
Shannon
He picked up. Picked up flowers off the lands, out of the landscaping to cover up the ring camera like this.
Matt Jones
And how it's worked.
Shannon
Yeah.
Ryan
Still bumbling that lady.
Matt Jones
We were talking about the oaks, and you asked me, so. So Dave Portnoy from Barstow has a horse.
Billy
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Running Shannon. One of the all time great, awkward Billy moments was at the Super Bowl.
Billy
Yeah.
Matt Jones
When we ran into Dave Portnoy because he was so excited to meet Dave Port. And he goes, I'd really like to meet him. So I said, you know what? I'll introduce you to him.
Billy
Remember, I have my sunglasses on for reasons at the party. It's like disorienting. I don't know where I'm at.
Matt Jones
You could have taken them off.
Billy
No. Committed to the bit. They were actually prescriptions, I think.
Matt Jones
So we walked over there, Shannon, and I was like, all right, I'm introducing. But I said to Billy, like, you know, don't. Don't embarrass me. Right. Because I'm bringing this. So I. So he knows Drew. So I go. So I say, hey. And Drew says. Says, hey. And then I'm like, and this is Mario. And you know Mario Shannon. He can handle it.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
He doesn't even know who Dave Portnoy is. Like, which is funny. He has no idea if it's a white guy. Mario doesn't know. He doesn't know. He doesn't know. Yeah, he has. He has no idea. And then. And then I go and I show Billy, and Billy is like, hello there, Mr. Portnoy. Then you look at him and you say, I'm a big fan. What did you say? Keep up the good work. What's today's pizza rating? Keep up the good work. Now, listen, I mean, not like I'm a big fan. You just said, keep up the good work. I looked at you like, what?
Billy
Yeah, it was definitely like a. What did you just say to me? It was really. The second line I went with, the first line was gonna be to get out the digital business card, but I refrained from that. I did not go that route.
Matt Jones
Good work.
Billy
But I did go, keep up the good work today.
Matt Jones
I'll tell him that you said to keep up the good, please.
Billy
And tell him his horse isn't going to win.
Matt Jones
859-280-2287 before we go the phones real quick, I do have to mention what I think is a big rhyme piece of college basketball.
Ryan
Okay.
Matt Jones
Which is this deal Duke signed yesterday.
Ryan
Oh, yes.
Matt Jones
You know, we, we've talked a lot about how, you know, anytime there are major transitions in sports, the first entities that really jump on it get dividends for a long time. For Kentucky, Cal got one and done before everybody else. And we. It paid dividends for a long time.
Ryan
Absolutely.
Matt Jones
Right. When the sport integrated, built, you know, UCLA really picked up on it very quickly and it paid dividends for a long time. Right. Like, you can go through we. You've listened to the show. You've heard me do that before. In this nil era, it's. This is, this is happening now. And the question is what schools are. Everybody has to do it, but what schools are going to do it in a unique way to pay dividends? And when I saw this deal yesterday, at first I see a deal that says Duke's going to play three games on Amazon. And I was like, well, that's interesting. I don't know how big a deal that is. How many people are going to turn on Amazon and watch it, Right? Three good games, but who cares? But then I read the details, and when I read the details, I think it is a transformational deal that if other schools aren't right now meeting to try to figure out how they do it, they're a mistake. Amazon is not only going to show three Duke games next year and presumably years to come, but they are going to pay the Duke players nil money to promote the games on the Amazon platform. Now, I want to quickly tell you why that's a big deal. This week. I actually kind of took a crash course in NIL from some people that work in IT to just learn what's going on. And long story short, one of the things is this clearinghouse that decides whether or not nil deals will pass. One of the things they look at is your market. So if I pay Billy to do an ad in Lexington, what is an ad in Lexington worth? Right? Right. So then you can see whether you're overpaying them and whether they'll strike it down. Well, this is what's brilliant about Duke. Amazon can pay them, literally whatever, because the marketplace is the whole world. Right. An ad on Amazon goes everywhere in the world. So I don't know what they've agreed to pay Duke, but there will really be no limitation. What they can pay Them because they don't have to say what an ad is worth in Durham, North Carolina. They get to say what an ad is worth in the entire world.
Ryan
Right.
Matt Jones
So Amazon has free reign to write Duke a check, probably for whatever they want. And they can. Amazon can directly pay the Duke players. Think about that. That's brilliant. Then the game is going to be broadcast all around the world. College basketball is not broadcast around the world. But all of a sudden, if you're in any other country in the world and you want to watch a college basketball game, now, you're going to have an option, and it's Duke. So you could see how there could be a scenario where the, like, in a lot of the world, college basketball is Duke. You know what I mean?
Ryan
Right.
Matt Jones
It means Duke. It's brilliant. And I think that schools like Kentucky, you better find something like this. I'm not saying it has to be a game on a streaming platform, but their head of basketball operations, this woman, her name is Rachel Baker. And that's the woman they hired from Nike. Correct. You got to say that's one of the best hires. And by the way, we have no one in a position like this. We don't even have it. It's not that we have the right person. We have no one in a position like this. You got to give them credit because they now have one of the largest corporations in the world directly paying their players. Unbelievable.
Ryan
I hate to applaud Duke, but this is unbelievably outstanding deal for them. Get out in front of it early.
Billy
The.
Ryan
The gal that. The lady that put this together is a. Just a genius.
Matt Jones
You can't hear.
Ryan
I think you're the only one that doesn't like me saying the police report
Shannon
referred to herself as a gal this morning.
Matt Jones
Look, I could. Maybe I'm the only one. I saw both Shannon and Billy's face crib because they knew that when you
Billy
knew you were gonna get onto it, you.
Ryan
You hate it.
Matt Jones
I just. I just. Gal. But it is brilliant. This babe at Duke, like. No, no, just woman. Lady. Brilliant. Outstanding.
Billy
Kentucky's a global brand. They need to get in on a partnership like this.
Matt Jones
This is a different thing.
Ryan
Game changer.
Matt Jones
So I do think it's a game changer. We'll take the calls. Be right back.
iHeartRadio Advertiser
T.J. smith, personal injury attorney.
Matt Jones
Call T.J. he'll make him pay.
Shannon
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Matt Jones
Welcome back, Techy Sports Radio. Did you say there's a horse called Sister Gene running today?
Shannon
Yeah, in the first race. Yeah. 12 to 1.
Matt Jones
I wonder if she'll tweet about it.
Shannon
She might. From heaven.
Ryan
She should tweet about it.
Shannon
I don't know how the WI fi is up there, but we'll see.
Matt Jones
What were you saying? You were making everybody you liked my landscaping.
Ryan
Went to your house yesterday, walk up the driveway, the landscaping is all mulched and all the weeds are pulled. And then I noticed a little fountain is going. It's operational.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan
Walk in your house and the pool. You got four waterfalls in your pool.
Matt Jones
Waterfall.
Ryan
Yeah, Waterfalls and waterfalls. Fountains and waterfalls.
Billy
What are we doing here, Matt?
Matt Jones
I mean, what's wrong with that?
Billy
Nothing wrong with it. I will point out like that at
Ryan
my place, not one single piece of furniture. But the house looks awesome.
Matt Jones
I just sit and look at the waterfalls. But, you know, you shouldn't go chasing those bills.
Billy
There you go.
Matt Jones
Don't worry about that. 859-280-2287. One person writes, Matt, how can Duke do that with their deal with espn? Because it was a good loophole.
SpinQuest Disclaimer
So.
Matt Jones
So people I don't think understand. Kentucky owes ESPN the rights to the games that are at home. So any game in Lexington has to be on espn, the SEC network, et cetera. But when they play on the road or on a neutral site, those games can be on any network. Now, Kentucky promises ESPN so many games of content a year, so so many home games, Right? So what Duke did is Duke. So Kentucky and Duke both have the ability to play two games that are not ESPN games. Duke wanted to play three, so they went to espn and ESPN said, if you'll play in one of our ESPN owned tournaments in other years, we'll let you do it. But that's why Kentucky. So for instance, this year our non ESPN games are the CBS Classic, Right? And then when we play at Indiana. See, that was one of the things about the Indiana series. I don't like the Indiana series. Not because I don't care. It's just like it's. We get to play two games a year that are not on espn. Presumably you could sell them to other networks, but the Indiana game, we're giving that to them, right?
Caller - Morris/Timothy/Bluegrass/J
Right.
Matt Jones
So we're playing a true road game. And it'll be on like Fox because we have to play under the Indiana schedule. Their deal, because it's their deal because it's on their floor.
Billy
So we're looking back, bringing back a historic rivalry that may not matter anymore. Instead, we should be, should have been looking forward opinion.
Matt Jones
We should have Been looking forward. Now, Jack Pilgrim reported that we were in talks with Netflix in 2022 to do something like this and that UK vetoed it, saying they wanted to play more home games.
Ryan
Well, in hindsight, that's a huge mistake.
Matt Jones
If that's true. If Jack's right, and I don't know, I mean, if he says that, I'm sure he is right. That's a mistake.
Ryan
So should they go back and try to negotiate?
Matt Jones
I mean, yeah, I hope so. I mean, like, you know, time's wasted,
Billy
but especially when the home games are the BBN invitation.
Matt Jones
Well, that's what I'm saying. If you use those home games to play somebody great, I'll get it. But if we're using them to play, you know, the BBN Invitational, which is probably what we're doing, honestly, is we're using him to play the BB and Invitational, then I don't like that at all. I think that's a mistake. So it's just. It's an interesting. You know, this was, I think, a very, very smart thing for Duke to do. But for me, even more than the games, it's just a signal of thinking about things in a different way right now. I had a lot of people write me and say, see, this is why college basketball is falling apart. If you want to hate college basketball as it is, that's fine. I mean, it's up to you. You can like what you want to like, but it ain't changing. Right? And so you just need to decide if you like, maybe this sport's not for you anymore. And if it's not, that's fine. It's for me. And my point is, I want us to be good. So if this is going to be how it is, go win.
Ryan
Right?
Matt Jones
Will Stein has the best thing. Will Stein says, I have opinions on what the rules should be, but I'm going to win under the rules that they have.
Ryan
That's right.
Matt Jones
Right.
Ryan
So be proactive and get out in front of some of this, like Duke
Billy
just did, and be enthusiastic about it. I think that comes through you and people see that.
Matt Jones
The reason we had to make the change from Mitch is. Mitch is. Was in an era of I don't like this. Everybody slow down. And I'm arguing, speed up.
Ryan
Because I would say the Duke majority of the Duke fan base would be jumping up and down, ecstatic about it.
Matt Jones
Beg for forgiveness, don't ask for permission. Mitch is an ask for permission.
Billy
You've got me in trouble with that.
Matt Jones
What do you mean?
Billy
That line.
Shannon
I knew we should have given away those Theo tickets.
Matt Jones
You are not Duke. Okay, Billy Duke should be at begging for forgiveness, asking permission. You're Lehigh. You have to be careful.
Billy
Yeah, I got in that helicopter and threw pigs from the sky. I heart didn't really like that. That was a ask for forgiveness, not permission.
Matt Jones
But you. But you didn't have permission to throw pigs from the sky.
Billy
No, I didn't. I just did it anyway.
Matt Jones
Yeah, well, but you don't have that leverage.
Shannon
Just throw bacon on people's heads.
Matt Jones
All right, let's go to Morris. Go ahead, Morris.
Caller - Morris/Timothy/Bluegrass/J
Yeah, I've got an offer for. For ksr. So this year I think we're going to have a good team, maybe a great team, but we can need your help to put them over the top. You know, I know there's journalistic integrity, but I feel like I've been listening to the show for a long time. I feel like there's guys who get their hands dirty if it'll mean helping to put the team over the top. So here's the offer. Last year's Kentucky team, I think was really impacted by the $22 million narrative. It affected the fans perception, made our guys super tight in games we lost, games that we probably shouldn't have because of how tight they were. So I need someone at KSR to write three articles this year. First one that says that Duke in Florida and Louisville all have 30 million dollar payrolls. Doesn't matter if it's true or not.
Matt Jones
People latch on like, what's your point? What are you getting at? Like, I mean, we're not going to write things that aren't true. So what's the next one?
Caller - Morris/Timothy/Bluegrass/J
No, no, I get that, I get that. But if we could just put some of that same pressure, that $22 million pressure.
Matt Jones
We didn't lose. $22 million pressure. We lost because we weren't. Our roster was not constructed correctly. I mean that and, and if you can't. My argument about the $22 million. If UK if that narrative was wrong, why didn't they say it was wrong? They never said it was wrong. And by the way, I don't know if it was right or not, but all year long, uk, if that narrative was wrong, they could have said it. And not one time did somebody get up and say they didn't. So I think UK wanted people to think they spent $22 million. Don't you?
Ryan
We're Kentucky.
Matt Jones
I think they wanted to say, look, we're the big dog.
Ryan
That's right.
Matt Jones
And it backfired on him. But that's not KSR's fault. That's UK basketball.
Caller - Morris/Timothy/Bluegrass/J
No. Do you think the $30 million tag would put pressure on Florida?
Matt Jones
It has to be true. If it is true, then, yeah, it probably would. But just saying something because if. Because. Because Florida will probably come out and say it's not true. And I. By the way, I don't think it is true. I don't think they spent 30 minutes. I think. And I appreciate the call. I think they have a culture where they're probably spending a lot of money, but a lot of those guys want to be there. I mean, let's be real. We got to be honest with ourselves, Denzel. Aberdeen left here because he wanted to go back there.
Ryan
Yep.
Matt Jones
That's just true.
Ryan
Halk went back.
Matt Jones
All these guys had other options. They all went back. They clearly like being there. That's the culture we need to put here. You know, it is the case that a lot of these guys go and chase a bag, but clearly, some guys. Some teams have a way of getting guys to stay.
Ryan
Yes.
Matt Jones
That needs to be us. You know, Aberdeen left and went back, and his girlfriend is still here.
Ryan
She is.
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, that says something, doesn't it?
Billy
Yeah. And look, if you're trying to avoid pressure, Kentucky's just not the place for you. This is.
Matt Jones
No, I agree with that, too. If you're trying to avoid pressure, this is. You can't come. I mean, I wish you could, but you can't. Timothy. Go ahead, Timothy.
Caller - Morris/Timothy/Bluegrass/J
Hey, Matt, A couple things. Why in the world is DA Derek Anderson gone on the coaching staff? What do we got to do to get him involved? And, you know, Pope has talked about his 96 text group. You know, that they're hard on him. That's. In private, however. How do you think it sat with Pope and the staff DA's interview?
Matt Jones
You know, I don't know. I don't know if. If. If I. I don't know Mark well enough to know bothered him or not. I bet he was okay with it, but I don't know him, so I don't know. As far as having Derek on the staff, I appreciate the call. I'd be fine with it, but I also. You know, there's probably a lot of people that want that job. I mean, I'd be fine with it, but I'm also. I mean, we. We have to be very careful that we don't get into this mindset that we want them because they went here. That's. That's caused those problems. Get the best guy. Get the best guy. If that's Derek, get him. But if it's not, you know, well, who should be our gm? John Wall. Who should be our assistant coach? Rondo. Who should be our next assistant coach? Derek. We can get beyond the guys that went here. Right?
Ryan
Right.
Matt Jones
I mean, the woman that's running that basketball operations came from Nike. She came from Nike. She had no Duke connection.
Billy
Well, they hired the head coach based off that logic.
Matt Jones
And it may be worked and good, but normally it doesn't. In Shire's case, it may have worked, but I can give you a lot of examples where it didn't.
Billy
Yeah. And I hope Kentucky's not that next example.
Matt Jones
I hope so too. I mean that we'll. We'll see. Bluegrass. Go ahead. Bluegrass.
Caller - TJ
Hey, what's going on, fellas? Hey. I think was going to be about identity. My take was going to be about our identity today. And then I sort of realized I've been missing something from you guys. Like, you guys have got an identity. Like, I know, Matt, I know I might not agree with half the stuff, but I know you're spitting facts and you're a knowledgeable cat. And I love Ryan, how he brings in his humor with the. No nonsense, you know, strong opinion we got. Shannon comes up. Yes, yes. No nonsense. But Shannon's just a strong opinion. Yes, Shannon is a strong opinion that I guess we could say no. Well, we won't say that. But you know where I'm going with. With this. You know who's missing? Who's missing is what I'm getting at. Mario. Mario. I love this cat, man. You know, he keeps us cool and hip and he gets you all with the know how. And Billy, you know, he's coming off the bench. He's the sixth man. You know, he's not going to take the lead.
Shannon
He's the walk on.
Caller - TJ
But he's going to keep us tied, you know.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he's exactly. He keeps going. Yes.
Caller - TJ
But this is where I was getting that we're missing Drew and it. I've never seen like a sports talk show and I've been listening to a lot of people for a lot of years that it actually does take every one of you guys. And that's what makes.
Matt Jones
Thank you for saying everyone that. But it's very kind. No, I mean, we do miss Drew, but. But he's had a baby. What do you want me to do?
Caller - TJ
Oh, no, no, I think. No, it's great. But I'm just saying it takes every one of you all to to make your else magic. And it really does. Like, it really does. Well, let me get to the identity real quick. You know, I haven't called in a while, but let's. The identity of our team.
Matt Jones
I gave you a minute to say the show good without Drew. So get quickly.
Billy
Not the same.
Caller - TJ
Do we have an identity? That's what I'm worried about. Like, I mean, do we. I know we're going.
Matt Jones
I don't know.
Caller - TJ
Creators now.
Matt Jones
I don't know because I'm not doing creators now. Yeah, I've not seen you guys play, so.
Caller - TJ
All right, I'll get off here, fellas. But yeah, it takes all of you all to make your magic.
Matt Jones
Thank you very much. Appreciate this.
Billy
It's a missing piece of this show. It's just not the same.
Matt Jones
You know, this show just isn't the same. Drew will be back hopefully in not next week but the week after that. I told Debbie Green, I told you about Debbie Green with bringing in the green a while back. She buys ads on this show for a lot of businesses. And I told you about the various businesses that she has worked with that have seen the impact skyrocket from being on the show. Well, she's in Lexington. It's called bringing in the green. Shannon
Are you sure that's not Ryan Lemon?
Matt Jones
I mean, it is Ryan. It's Ryan. If he were like a 1980s televangelist.
Billy
I mean, it does look like.
Matt Jones
I mean, like that.
SpinQuest Disclaimer
Like.
Matt Jones
Okay, first, what's crazy is I know this man, Scott Maiden. He's the mayor of Pineville. And I. I've known him, like, my. My whole life.
Ryan
Have you ever once thought that we look.
Matt Jones
No, I've never thought that picture. He has more hair than you but
Shannon
it's like, take the. Put your hand and cover up the hair from, like, the forehead down. It looks exactly.
Matt Jones
It looks exactly like you.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Like, I. You know, we always talk about doppelgangers, but that's as much of one as I've ever seen. So I sent it to my mom, who knows Scott Maiden really well.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And she was like, I've known him forever. I never thought he looked like Ryan. But in that picture.
Ryan
Picture, we're twins. We're.
Matt Jones
I mean, they're at Chain Rock. What are the chances they would be a Chain Rock? Trit. Noah had to get his driver's license renewed at Chain Rock.
Billy
I regret not going to see that rock when we were out there in Pineville.
Matt Jones
Well, Ryan was there in a red vest yesterday. For people who haven't seen it, you got to go on social media. If you're on Facebook, go to Scott Maiden's profile. And he's. That's Ryan. That looks just like.
Ryan
I admit myself. It looks like me. If you hold it up right there.
Shannon
Yeah. If he ever robbed a bank, they go out.
Matt Jones
You're in trouble.
Shannon
Yeah.
Matt Jones
All right. So I listen to this podcast or have started listening to it a lot because I've gotten way too into hockey. Spitting Chiclets. And they had a question on there the other day. That was, what movie? If you could pick one movie in history that you'd like to be on the set while they made it.
Ryan
Oh, wow.
Matt Jones
What would you want to do? Great question. You can answer on the text machine. 772-7745254. What movie? You pick any movie in history, and you get to be there while they're making it. What are you going to do? I think you can go first.
Billy
Oh, you want me to go? I think you mentioned it the other day. I would go Pulp Fiction.
Matt Jones
Pulp Fiction.
Billy
The Wolf, Samuel Jackson.
Matt Jones
You like the actors?
Billy
Yeah, the actors. Tarantino directing in his prime. I think that'd be a great one to be on.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Kind of before he blew up, too. I mean, not that that movie kind of was what made his career before. All right, so Pulp Fiction. What about you?
Ryan
See, I'd probably pick a baseball movie and go to all these great old baseball ballparks.
Matt Jones
What. What baseball movie?
Ryan
Like, Jackie Robinson movie.
Matt Jones
You'd want to go to the Jackie Robinson movie.
Ryan
Yeah, because they shoot him in these different ballparks. These old ballparks.
Matt Jones
Just gonna go into the ballpark.
Billy
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I mean, you do that now, but
Ryan
not these, like, you know, is it a situation where There's a game going on.
Matt Jones
It's not a real game.
Ryan
I know, but it is. I think I would definitely pick a ballpark movie.
Matt Jones
That's a horrible answer. What about you, Shannon?
Shannon
I'm trying to think of, like, something that would be more interesting than the answer that I initially came up with. My favorite movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that would be a great.
Shannon
I would like to be there, but I don't think it would be like the most.
Matt Jones
Well, give me the ones they said because I thought these were good answers.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Animal House. Because apparently it was just like a two months part.
Shannon
That would be fun.
Billy
That'd be perfect.
Shannon
American Pie, I think would be fun.
Matt Jones
Well, but in a manimal house, they really partied during the whole. Yeah, like, they were all. It was like, you know, all these people from like Saturday Night and Caddyshacks apparently like that too.
Ryan
I saw a documentary making a Caddy.
Matt Jones
Caddyshack and Animal House were apparently like non stop wild. Then one guy said he'd like to see war movies film, but especially back before they were done with cgi. So like Saving Private Ryan or these movies where I think he said Braveheart, where you'd have to see these elaborate scenes getting. I think it would be cool. This is my answer. Nobody said this. Apocalypse Now.
Ryan
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Have you ever read about what that was like? No. They were all like in the jungles and they kind of went crazy and Marlon Brando was acting insane and they had to like. Like they really were bombing parts of these places to actually try to create it. And apparently just the making of it was just utter chaos, which I think would be fascinating.
Shannon
I think any horror movie would be hilarious to be to watch because of all the behind the scenes stuff.
Matt Jones
Because of all the. What it would take to do it.
Shannon
Yeah. Imagine you're on the scene of like Chucky and they've got to take this
Matt Jones
doll and they got. You have to act like it's scary.
Shannon
Yeah, I mean, that would be.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I like that. Yeah, that's a good. That's a good one. I mean, Godfather would be cool, like to have gone to when all those dudes were acting in their prime.
Ryan
Prime and to watch Back in Time and do that.
Billy
You mentioned party movies. I thought of old school. I mean, Will Ferrell around that time.
Matt Jones
Old school would have been fun at that time. So. Yeah, it's a good question. I'm sure people will have the answer. You. You can go on it real quick. Let's go to Howard. Go ahead.
Ryan
Howard.
Matt Jones
All right, let's go to quickly. TJ. TJ, 40 seconds.
