Hold on now. Like, I'm not that short. I'm 5 10. That's average build. But yes, I will be in the infield interviewing the drunkest people that you see and the jockeys in the pedagogy.

[Matt Jones]

So I think I ask you this a lot. How many years have you interviewed the jockeys?

[Billy]

This would be my third year doing it.

[Matt Jones]

And what have you had? Have you gotten a rapport with them? Like Irad Ortiz? Does he see see you and go, what up, Billy?

[Billy]

So the last two years, I've interviewed the winner before the actual race. So Brian Hernandez Jr. Won on the.

[Matt Jones]

You only interview one jockey all day?

[Billy]

No, no, I interview about like, five. But, like, I've gotten the winner.

[Matt Jones]

That's. I mean, Shannon, if he gets five.

[Shannon]

Yeah, just get on the.

Yeah, I mean, if you get all of the jockeys, you're going to have interviewed the winner at some point, but

then you can replay that interview and say this was the Derby winning jockey. So Brian Hernandez Jr. My guy is out there.

Why is it easier guy? What he said we have a close rapport.

[Billy]

And then bowling. And then Junior Alvarado won it on Sovereignty last year and I interviewed him. So.

So who. Who are you going to interview this year?

[Billy]

I have no clue. It's usually just whoever I make, like, awkward eye contact with.

And then has anyone turned you down? Yes. Who?

Well, I mean, that's understandable. They don't understand if they don't know. Do you think any of them though are faking the fact that they don't know English so they don't have to talk to you?

[Billy]

I hope not. That would be.

I try to do that on the pre show. It doesn't work.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah, like. Like who is it? There's. There were some baseball. They said Ellie was doing that his first year. Ellie kind of could speak English, but kind of couldn't. And then like when he doesn't want to talk to somebody, he'd be like, yeah, no English.

[Ryan]

Especially after a bad game, you don't sit there and talk about it. I don't understand.

[Matt Jones]

Well, you, you could maybe bring a translator because you. Because I, I would assume there are multiple jockeys now that don't speak English. Right?

[Billy]

There. There are several there. There are several that'll be making their Kentucky Derby debut tomorrow. Like who?

[Matt Jones]

Give it. Give me. Who the. Some of them.

[Billy]

I don't know it off the top.

Okay, so you're not really prepared.

[Billy]

I'm prepared, but like, I don't think you have to have. Know a bunch about horse racing to be able to give a good interview. I mean, we can.

What do you ask the jockey?

[Shannon]

Like how.

That's a terrible question. Yeah, I mean, that's like that. Yes, you're right. Anybody could do that. But that's like saying anyone could do anything badly in order to do a good interview. Well, you know, so I think you would probably go up and go. So like whatever jock. Who's on Renegade. Do we. What's the jockey on Renegade? Because I know it's a favorite go up and go.

[Billy]

They're not sure on that.

[Matt Jones]

All right, so you're on the derby mount for Renegade today, the favorite. You drew the poll. That's obviously something that people say is a negative. How are you going to make this a positive today?

[Billy]

I like that. I like that question.

[Matt Jones]

Or you can look at him and go, how are you feeling?

[Billy]

How's the track running right now? It's a little muddy out there. Will that change your speaker in the race?

[Matt Jones]

It's not going to be raining.

[Billy]

Well, it was last year, Matt. I'm just saying, trying to let you know how I get into the mind of the jockey for the WH interview. But these guys, like, they want to be interviewed. Right? Like this is. It's not like a coach giving coach

speak so have you gotten to talk to Irad Ortiz? He's famously prickly.

[Billy]

I have not. He is.

You got to talk to Shannon.

He's avoiding that. He's avoiding the prickly one.

So Iraq. So perfect. You got to interview Irad. He's on Renegade. I don't know if he speaks English, but I know. I'm sure he speaks it a little bit. And he is the favorite. And he's known as the prickly guy. If you don't come away with an Irad interview because, you know, people. Some people think he cheats.

Oh, I didn't know that.

So you got Billy, if you. Some research, if you were serious about this, you would learn their language.

That's right. You should learn basic Spanish.

I'm not here to bring up his cheating allegations, though.

He really hasn't. I think, you know, he wins, Ryan, the National Handicap Contest, but he never wins on this show.

Well, I found out a minute before we go on the pre show.

Why didn't you tell your co host I was taking. I was taking the pre show.

I didn't know he would base the entire show on a game to give away those tickets. I thought he might bring in three or four topics besides the entire shows based around those tickets.

Well, we thought we didn't have anything else, but then, you know, we didn't have anything.

Well, you know what? That's the way it goes. Now, I have a lot of small topics here. The goal today is to sort of be. To be like uplifting. Not so much. Like we're going to have to act like whatever's happening with. With basketball or whatever is great, but just we're going to try to stay on uplifting topics because it's Friday and it's Oaks Day and it's Billy's birthday and I won't do that. But before we do that, I do have to talk about one story that is sad but also fascinating.

Which was, you know, there was a bank robbery yesterday.

[Ryan]

Oh, yes.

[Matt Jones]

In Berea. There was a bank robbery on. Two people killed. Which is like when I think of Bay. I didn't know people still did bank robberies. Like when's the last time you've heard of us of a bank robbery robbery?

[Ryan]

Like, you know, maybe one a year in Lexington around here. Some guy walking.

[Matt Jones]

But never one a year in Lexington.

[Ryan]

But they always catch the guy like within minutes and it's no big deal.

[Matt Jones]

Not think there's one a year in Lexington.

[Ryan]

Close to it.

[Matt Jones]

I feel like that would make the whole banking game in Lexington much.

[Ryan]

Yeah, there's several that they.

[Matt Jones]

Shannon, do you remember one a year in Lexington?

[Shannon]

No. But now I'm curious to find out how many on average there are in Lexington or just in general.

[Matt Jones]

Why are we focusing on. This one wasn't even Lexington. This one was in Berea.

[Ryan]

Tight knit community. It's sad.

[Matt Jones]

I know, it's very sad. Two employees.

[Ryan]

Yes.

[Matt Jones]

But then the guy got away for a little while. So I was about to try to get on the interstate last night at like 9, 10, and they had blocked it. You couldn't get on. And they said it's not safe to go on the interstate right now. And I was like, why? Because there were still cars going by and they were like, there's about to be a high speed chase. And literally while I was sitting there trying to turn on the interstate, 15 police cars going 120 miles an hour were just one after another flying down the interstate.

[Ryan]

Wow.

And then I assume they were chasing somebody, although I didn't see that car. And then I heard like a few minutes later that somewhere they had like cornered the person and I guess they've been arrested. Is that correct?

[Ryan]

I think it was like. It was like.

I saw the car. They were flying. I mean like, and what. And I. They were trying to keep other people from like going into the interstate. But there were people who were already on this interstate who I assume, you know, I get, I get it. I guess if their officers going 120, they don't want people trying to merge onto the interstate. Yeah, but I couldn't believe how fast. And it was just one. It was, it was one after another. Just ton of cars. And I guess he must have crashed not very far. Really close. I was getting on. On Newtown. So I had to be really like I really could have been right in

the middle of it.

Yeah. So I guess thank you lady for not making me let me go on the road. Apparently there are 2,000 bank robberies in America a year. But in 2019 there were 18,000. So that's a huge go. That's like a huge decrease over the course of years.

I think you just have to imagine that technology's too good nowadays to do something like that. I'm surprised the number's that high.

Which is this deal Duke signed yesterday.

Oh, yes.

You know, we, we've talked a lot about how, you know, anytime there are major transitions in sports, the first entities that really jump on it get dividends for a long time. For Kentucky, Cal got one and done before everybody else. And we. It paid dividends for a long time.

[Ryan]

Absolutely.

[Matt Jones]

Right. When the sport integrated, built, you know, UCLA really picked up on it very quickly and it paid dividends for a long time. Right. Like, you can go through we. You've listened to the show. You've heard me do that before. In this nil era, it's. This is, this is happening now. And the question is what schools are. Everybody has to do it, but what schools are going to do it in a unique way to pay dividends? And when I saw this deal yesterday, at first I see a deal that says Duke's going to play three games on Amazon. And I was like, well, that's interesting. I don't know how big a deal that is. How many people are going to turn on Amazon and watch it, Right? Three good games, but who cares? But then I read the details, and when I read the details, I think it is a transformational deal that if other schools aren't right now meeting to try to figure out how they do it, they're a mistake. Amazon is not only going to show three Duke games next year and presumably years to come, but they are going to pay the Duke players nil money to promote the games on the Amazon platform. Now, I want to quickly tell you why that's a big deal. This week. I actually kind of took a crash course in NIL from some people that work in IT to just learn what's going on. And long story short, one of the things is this clearinghouse that decides whether or not nil deals will pass. One of the things they look at is your market. So if I pay Billy to do an ad in Lexington, what is an ad in Lexington worth? Right? Right. So then you can see whether you're overpaying them and whether they'll strike it down. Well, this is what's brilliant about Duke. Amazon can pay them, literally whatever, because the marketplace is the whole world. Right. An ad on Amazon goes everywhere in the world. So I don't know what they've agreed to pay Duke, but there will really be no limitation. What they can pay Them because they don't have to say what an ad is worth in Durham, North Carolina. They get to say what an ad is worth in the entire world.

[Ryan]

Right.

[Matt Jones]

So Amazon has free reign to write Duke a check, probably for whatever they want. And they can. Amazon can directly pay the Duke players. Think about that. That's brilliant. Then the game is going to be broadcast all around the world. College basketball is not broadcast around the world. But all of a sudden, if you're in any other country in the world and you want to watch a college basketball game, now, you're going to have an option, and it's Duke. So you could see how there could be a scenario where the, like, in a lot of the world, college basketball is Duke. You know what I mean?

Right.

[Matt Jones]

It means Duke. It's brilliant. And I think that schools like Kentucky, you better find something like this. I'm not saying it has to be a game on a streaming platform, but their head of basketball operations, this woman, her name is Rachel Baker. And that's the woman they hired from Nike. Correct. You got to say that's one of the best hires. And by the way, we have no one in a position like this. We don't even have it. It's not that we have the right person. We have no one in a position like this. You got to give them credit because they now have one of the largest corporations in the world directly paying their players. Unbelievable.

[Ryan]

I hate to applaud Duke, but this is unbelievably outstanding deal for them. Get out in front of it early.

So people I don't think understand. Kentucky owes ESPN the rights to the games that are at home. So any game in Lexington has to be on espn, the SEC network, et cetera. But when they play on the road or on a neutral site, those games can be on any network. Now, Kentucky promises ESPN so many games of content a year, so so many home games, Right? So what Duke did is Duke. So Kentucky and Duke both have the ability to play two games that are not ESPN games. Duke wanted to play three, so they went to espn and ESPN said, if you'll play in one of our ESPN owned tournaments in other years, we'll let you do it. But that's why Kentucky. So for instance, this year our non ESPN games are the CBS Classic, Right? And then when we play at Indiana. See, that was one of the things about the Indiana series. I don't like the Indiana series. Not because I don't care. It's just like it's. We get to play two games a year that are not on espn. Presumably you could sell them to other networks, but the Indiana game, we're giving that to them, right?

Right.

[Matt Jones]

So we're playing a true road game. And it'll be on like Fox because we have to play under the Indiana schedule. Their deal, because it's their deal because it's on their floor.

So we're looking back, bringing back a historic rivalry that may not matter anymore. Instead, we should be, should have been looking forward opinion.

[Matt Jones]

We should have Been looking forward. Now, Jack Pilgrim reported that we were in talks with Netflix in 2022 to do something like this and that UK vetoed it, saying they wanted to play more home games.

[Ryan]

Well, in hindsight, that's a huge mistake.

If that's true. If Jack's right, and I don't know, I mean, if he says that, I'm sure he is right. That's a mistake.

[Ryan]

So should they go back and try to negotiate?

[Matt Jones]

I mean, yeah, I hope so. I mean, like, you know, time's wasted,

but especially when the home games are the BBN invitation.

[Matt Jones]

Well, that's what I'm saying. If you use those home games to play somebody great, I'll get it. But if we're using them to play, you know, the BBN Invitational, which is probably what we're doing, honestly, is we're using him to play the BB and Invitational, then I don't like that at all. I think that's a mistake. So it's just. It's an interesting. You know, this was, I think, a very, very smart thing for Duke to do. But for me, even more than the games, it's just a signal of thinking about things in a different way right now. I had a lot of people write me and say, see, this is why college basketball is falling apart. If you want to hate college basketball as it is, that's fine. I mean, it's up to you. You can like what you want to like, but it ain't changing. Right? And so you just need to decide if you like, maybe this sport's not for you anymore. And if it's not, that's fine. It's for me. And my point is, I want us to be good. So if this is going to be how it is, go win.

Will Stein has the best thing. Will Stein says, I have opinions on what the rules should be, but I'm going to win under the rules that they have.

[Ryan]

That's right.

So be proactive and get out in front of some of this, like Duke

just did, and be enthusiastic about it. I think that comes through you and people see that.

Because I would say the Duke majority of the Duke fan base would be jumping up and down, ecstatic about it.

I feel like there's guys who get their hands dirty if it'll mean helping to put the team over the top. So here's the offer. Last year's Kentucky team, I think was really impacted by the $22 million narrative. It affected the fans perception, made our guys super tight in games we lost, games that we probably shouldn't have because of how tight they were. So I need someone at KSR to write three articles this year. First one that says that Duke in Florida and Louisville all have 30 million dollar payrolls. Doesn't matter if it's true or not.

[Matt Jones]

People latch on like, what's your point? What are you getting at? Like, I mean, we're not going to write things that aren't true. So what's the next one?

No, no, I get that, I get that. But if we could just put some of that same pressure, that $22 million pressure.

We didn't lose. $22 million pressure. We lost because we weren't. Our roster was not constructed correctly. I mean that and, and if you can't. My argument about the $22 million. If UK if that narrative was wrong, why didn't they say it was wrong? They never said it was wrong. And by the way, I don't know if it was right or not, but all year long, uk, if that narrative was wrong, they could have said it. And not one time did somebody get up and say they didn't. So I think UK wanted people to think they spent $22 million. Don't you?

We're Kentucky.

I think they wanted to say, look, we're the big dog.

And it backfired on him. But that's not KSR's fault. That's UK basketball.

I think they have a culture where they're probably spending a lot of money, but a lot of those guys want to be there. I mean, let's be real. We got to be honest with ourselves, Denzel. You know, I don't know. I don't know if. If. If I. I don't know Mark well enough to know bothered him or not. I bet he was okay with it, but I don't know him, so I don't know. As far as having Derek on the staff, I appreciate the call. I'd be fine with it, but I also. You know, there's probably a lot of people that want that job. I mean, I'd be fine with it, but I'm also. I mean, we. We have to be very careful that we don't get into this mindset that we want them because they went here. That's. That's caused those problems. Get the best guy. Get the best guy. If that's Derek, get him. But if it's not, you know, well, who should be our gm? John Wall. Who should be our assistant coach? Rondo. Who should be our next assistant coach? Derek. We can get beyond the guys that went here. Right?

Caddyshack and Animal House were apparently like non stop wild. Then one guy said he'd like to see war movies film, but especially back before they were done with cgi. So like Saving Private Ryan or these movies where I think he said Braveheart, where you'd have to see these elaborate scenes getting. I think it would be cool. This is my answer. Nobody said this. Apocalypse Now.

Have you ever read about what that was like? No. They were all like in the jungles and they kind of went crazy and Marlon Brando was acting insane and they had to like. Like they really were bombing parts of these places to actually try to create it. And apparently just the making of it was just utter chaos, which I think would be fascinating.

I think any horror movie would be hilarious to be to watch because of all the behind the scenes stuff.

Because of all the. What it would take to do it.

Yeah. Imagine you're on the scene of like Chucky and they've got to take this

doll and they got. You have to act like it's scary.
