This is Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage and the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Safe driving Tour. Now here's Matt Jones.
Shannon
Shannon.
Matt Jones
Yeah. You're on. Go ahead.
Shannon
All right, let's go. It is Kentucky Sports Radio. This is what happens when Billy leaves and he's all focused on the wedding and doesn't set this thing up.
Matt Jones
Nobod and turn on the mics. Mario did the same thing on the pre show.
Shannon
I don't understand. Well, you know, this is a techno technology filled place, but we are here. You can give us a shout on the Clark's Puppet shop phone line. 859-280-2287. A Vision Auto Glass text machine is 772-774-5254. In this edition sponsored by the TJ Smith Law Office. If you call TJ, he'll make them pay. I've got the full crowd here. Drew Franklin, Ryan Lemon, Shannon and Mario. Guys, how are you?
Mario
Good. Good. I notice you've got a shirt that has a grammatical air on it.
Shannon
It's not. This is what the team is called. You say this every time I wear this shirt. It's the Toronto Maple Leafs. That's what they call it. They don't call it the leaves. And that joke didn't work the first seven times, so I don't know why you always keep doing.
Ryan Lemon
After yesterday. You don't need to be talking about what people's shirts say here at the show. Remember his.
Mario
I'll bring. I'll bring that out again.
Shannon
The moist shirt I do like. You know, listen, it's not like people don't have spelling errors. I understand that. That happens. But I saw we apparently have a state senator and I forget his name. So I'm not. I'm not gonna say it. Cause also, I don't wanna just crush the guy. But he posted yesterday and he's a doctor. We have a state senator who's a doctor. And in his post, he spelled like six medical words Wrong. Including Oregon. He spelled Oregon is O R G O, N. Okay.
Matt Jones
I'm like, I don't know if I want that guy operating on me.
Shannon
That's exactly what I thought. I mean, you're a state senator. I understand that. State senators that maybe the bar is not high anymore, but if you are also a doctor. And he. I knew he was a doctor because he. He had in his. In his profile picture, Shannon, a coat, a medical coat. And he said, my name is Dr. Whatever. And he spelled Oregon O, G, R, N. And then he said, you will put people in danger. Like. And he spelled it en Danger in one word.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, that's not how it works.
Shannon
Come on, man. I don't want that guy operating on me. Shannon, do you?
Matt Jones
No. Definitely not a doctor of English. I mean, my God, I'd rather him
Shannon
be a doctor of English. That's not going to keep me from living or not.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
You think to be accomplished, to be a senator, even though the bar is a lower doctor. Maybe you're met the senator education.
Shannon
Yes. Well, nevertheless, glad to be here this morning. And we got some exciting news early this morning.
Mario
Yes.
Shannon
Mark Pope put out an Instagram video that said he is opening the doors for practice at Rupp arena starting at 10:30. So you can go watch practice this morning.
Mario
Right.
Shannon
At 10:30. At first they said, the first hundred people. I'm being told by a little spy that if you get there, you're good.
Mario
They're not going to turn you away.
Shannon
They're not going to turn you away. So I don't think we are allowed to go do the show there, which is what I would like to do.
Mario
Yeah. I kind of even checked into it that got no response about it.
Shannon
But we're on the air, Shannon. We can't just let this go.
Sam
Right.
Matt Jones
We can't just let go.
Shannon
So what are we going to do? We need to. I put out a call on social media saying if you're there, if you're going and you want to call in, go. And I've had some people say, well, I might go. That doesn't do me a lot of good. What do we do?
Matt Jones
I would say send Mario, but Mario has got the music today. So he's got Mario.
Shannon
It's Mario music day.
Sam
Yeah.
Shannon
So I'm going to quickly open up the phones. 859-280-2287. This is your chance to be a correspondent.
Mario
Yes.
Shannon
On the show. I don't know. Did you all see last night the guy with the Phillies?
Ryan Lemon
Oh, that was incredible.
Shannon
Shannon. Pull him up. The Phillies had a guy who won a contest. Was it an auction?
Ryan Lemon
It was an auction.
Shannon
It was an auction. He won an auction. And as part of the auction, he would get to call Play By Play for the Phillies.
Mario
Oh, that's awesome. On the radio.
Shannon
On the radio, yeah. Now, on paper, that sounds like something that's going to be a disaster, right?
Ryan Lemon
Oh, yeah.
Shannon
Because we've talked about this on paper. This is a hard job.
Mario
Yes.
Shannon
This guy does it. And when I saw it, I was like, well, I want to listen to this. This is going to be awful. Oh, no.
Mario
Nailed it.
Shannon
If I'm the feel, he's got fire, the regular.
Ryan Lemon
I don't think the other guy needs to show up for work today.
Shannon
I mean it. He got Wally Pipped on his own show.
Ryan Lemon
Fans loved it.
Shannon
Get out. This guy, I think he has a career.
Mario
I can't wait to hear it. Now.
Matt Jones
I've got it pulled up.
Shannon
You got it? Okay, so I want to play it. But what I'm saying is, if you're this court, if you're doing the Pope practice for us, here's your moment.
Mario
Yeah.
Shannon
Bill's gone. This is your chance.
Ryan Lemon
Perfect time.
Shannon
This is your chance to just take it. Take the job, but try to be as good as the Phillies guy. Let's play like a minute or so of it.
Lewis Kalb
We are headed to the third inning,
Shannon
Phillies on top, 2 to 1.
Lewis Kalb
And we're pleased to welcome Lewis Kalb from Medford Lakes, New Jersey. He is our Phillies fantastic auction winner. He outbid the competition to spend an inning and do some play by play in the booth.
Shannon
And Louis, welcome.
Matt Jones
Glad to have you here.
Lewis Kalb
Thank you, Scott. It's a thrill to be here. It's a lifelong dream to be in the Phillies broadcast booth. So here we go. Painter with the first pitch. Duarte. It's in there for strike one.
Sam
Call.
Lewis Kalb
Phil's with two at the bottom of the second to take the lead at the top of the third. Now Painter delivers. It's bounced. Foul.
Matt Jones
He sounds good, too.
Mario
He's got the voice.
Shannon
He's got the voice.
Lewis Kalb
And they count one and one and
Mario
kind of the baseball cadence.
Shannon
Cadence, yeah.
Lewis Kalb
First two games of this series, one more to go tomorrow night. And then a three game set with the Blue Jays over the weekend.
Mario
Exactly what you do as a radio guy.
Matt Jones
Strike three.
Shannon
Listen.
Sam
Oh, hang on.
Matt Jones
Let's see.
Lewis Kalb
Peter delivers. It's a check swing. It's a called strike three. He got him.
Shannon
I mean, wow, that dude. You just go ahead and give him the job, right? Like if you hadn't told me he won a contest.
Mario
You think that's a normal guy?
Shannon
I assume that was the normal guy. He's got that. He's like, that's what a baseball announcer is supposed to sound like.
Mario
So he started talking. I thought that this guy sounds like he's done this for years.
Sam
Play.
Shannon
Just a second. They try to make conversation with him and they completely blow his resume. Just keep going from where you stopped.
Matt Jones
And Lewis, you spent your life as a what, Firefighter?
Lewis Kalb
Police officer. Neither of those things. Teacher in recent years.
Shannon
Neither of those things. Like they didn't even bother to get his resume right. And he still comes and brings it. I'm a big fan.
Mario
They should have let him do the whole game. Not just an inning. They should let him do the whole game.
Shannon
Listen, he's going to be doing.
Ryan Lemon
He's getting picked up.
Shannon
He's doing something. There's no way, Shannon, you just let that guy go after that half inning, especially after he's gone viral and everybody talking about how good he is.
Matt Jones
He's better than half of the guys that do this thing every day for a living. So, yeah, yeah, you got to use
Shannon
him because he's kind of awesome.
Ryan Lemon
He'll end up with a job. Maybe not for the Phillies team.
Mario
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Remember the homeless guy in Cleveland that had the radio voice and he went viral and now he still gets work, this guy.
Shannon
Does he still get work?
Mario
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
I didn't realize he ended up becoming not like famous famous, but he does a lot of stuff. This guy will end up calling baseball somewhere.
Mario
As soon as he started talking, I thought, I'm like, this is going to be awful. But he's got the voice. Kind of sounded like that TBT announcer we had every game. Channing.
Matt Jones
But no, no, no, this guy's actually good. I like.
Shannon
Yeah, I thought everybody didn't like the
Mario
Shannon, didn't like the tv.
Shannon
Why didn't you like the TVT guy?
Matt Jones
Because he talked like this. Everybody. It is LA familiar taking on the ville. And there you go, there's the Elam ending.
Shannon
Well, I mean, this guy kind of sounds like that, doesn't he?
Ryan Lemon
When I first heard this guy last night, I thought of. Shannon's the same person.
Shannon
Yeah. Well, so this is your chance now. 859-280-2287 if you are on the way there, I think you're. There's a line right now. They're going to open it. Shannon, is there anybody in line yet?
Matt Jones
I haven't heard if there's anybody in line. You talk about outside of rubber. You're not talking about.
Shannon
No, I'm saying, like, for someone on the phone.
Matt Jones
Yes, yes, yes, on the phone. Yes.
Shannon
Okay. Put the. Who. Who are my choices?
Matt Jones
You got Drew, Sam or Preacher.
Shannon
All right, what do you think? Drew, Sam or Preacher?
Matt Jones
We.
Shannon
We don't. I mean, I. Preacher. I know. We know Preacher.
Mario
Yeah, that's our normal guy.
Shannon
He doesn't live in Kentucky.
Mario
Shelby county, doesn't he?
Shannon
Yeah. So, Preacher, are you. You're not there, are you?
Sam
No, I'm on my way on Russell Cave, and I'm from Bracken County.
Shannon
Oh, you're from Bracken County. So how far away are you?
Sam
Well, I'm on Russell Cave. I'd be there right at 10:30, but they're mowing the side of the road and I am stuck behind the track.
Shannon
Okay, well, I can't. Sorry. So, Preacher, call us back. If we don't find another way, I can't help the mowing on the grass. I do appreciate you trying, though.
Sam
But I'll be there. I'm going. I promise. I'll be there.
Shannon
All right.
Lewis Kalb
All right.
Shannon
I appreciate it.
Ryan Lemon
I bet Sam's there.
Shannon
Let's.
Sam
Let's.
Shannon
Let's try. Sam. Sam, are you there?
Sam
Yes, sir. Five minutes. About a mile from Main Street. Okay.
Shannon
All right. So, Sam, I guess. Shannon, give Sam the hotline.
Sam
All right?
Shannon
Okay. And, Sam, what I would like you to do is you're gonna like. If you. If you're. If you'll accept, you can't disrupt the practice. I do remember Mark Pope's big about everybody being quiet.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah.
Shannon
So y' all have to kind of walk up to the concourse and give us updates. Okay.
Sam
Okay.
Shannon
So there's, like. I think they're going to stretch. He said at 10:30 after the stretch, he may be like 10:50 or something. Walk up to the concourse, call the hotline, and tell us how it's going, all right?
Sam
Yes, sir.
Shannon
All right. So, Sam, we will have Sam as
Mario
our correspondent, cub reporter on the scene, reporting live from Rupp Arena.
Shannon
Creature. I'm sorry, you're behind the guy on Russell Cave mowing grass all days. Of all days, though, for them to mow grass on. Did it rain? The grass is too wet to mow.
Mario
All those guys, they don't care. They're out there doing it. They're big bush hogs.
Shannon
But you talk about grass, right?
Mario
Yeah.
Shannon
Okay.
Mario
You know what a bush hog is?
Shannon
859-280-2287. The text machine is 77277 do you like that Mark Pope's doing this? It's oddly a fan centric day. The football practice though is not open for the fans. Right. That's for the media.
Ryan Lemon
Media, maybe a few. I don't know if they're letting BBN United certain tiers of people in stuff
Shannon
like that, but they're doing that.
Sam
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
This is kind of swiping in and getting the fan attention. Right. Is Meet the team day though.
Shannon
I like Pope doing it. I think that's, you know, they didn't this sort of idea of make the program accessible to fans I think is something that needs to happen. So I like it.
Mario
And notice he says something about today's the last day of summer practice. So he's inviting the fans in.
Shannon
Okay. I didn't realize that was what it was. Okay.
Mario
So I think it's an awesome idea to reconnect with the fan base right now.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, yeah. Very cool. This is the stuff in the off season you want even, even if they don't do much, just given any kind of access at all or even like the videos he did, answering questions. You got to keep the interest in the excitement up year round.
Shannon
And I mean, let's be honest, they will be the. Some of the first people to see the true. Yeah, man. That's why I would like to go.
Mario
I wish we could go down to me would just.
Shannon
I want to run off and go and make you all stay here and do the show.
Mario
You can be our reporter.
Ryan Lemon
I wonder who's traveling the farthest. Like who just hopped in the car.
Shannon
Well, he came from bracket.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon
So that's, I mean got to be at least close the leader.
Mario
Yeah. Because they didn't announce it to what, nine, 20, something like that.
Shannon
So Sam is going to be our official reporter now for the rest of you all, if you're going, I'm okay. If you call in. Just when you call in, tell Shannon you're there.
Mario
Okay.
Shannon
Because maybe they'll see something Sam doesn't see. Yeah, I've hired Sam sight unseen.
Ryan Lemon
We don't know his reporting. Maybe he's negative, positive. We need the collective.
Shannon
We don't know. Will he freeze Shannon? We don't know if he's going to be like, what is it Louis there on the Phillies game where he's just bringing it.
Mario
Nailed it.
Shannon
Now, not as successful as Louis on the Phillies game was. Did you see what happened with the Detroit Pistons?
Matt Jones
Oh yeah.
Shannon
For $250 you were able to go. The Detroit Pistons had an open G league tryout. You could try out to be on their G league. That video went a little differently.
Lewis Kalb
Shannon.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you had guys like their pants were falling down, they're poking each other in the eyes like nobody.
Shannon
There was a guy who just was like knocking people down.
Matt Jones
Oh my God.
Shannon
What do you think? Like two eighty? Shannon.
Matt Jones
That might be ye. Yeah, that might be being nice. I would say maybe 300 pounds. But the guy's pants were down around his ankles.
Shannon
Pants fell down, crack showing.
Matt Jones
I mean I think, I think he
Shannon
caused a couple of torn ACLs with his.
Mario
I would watch Pistons G league ball though, if he was on the team.
Shannon
I, I've been saying this for years. You allow regular people to play sports. I'm in.
Sam
Yes.
Mario
I'm watching it.
Shannon
Regular people, I've said this a long time, play the masters. And one guy's just a normal guy.
Ryan Lemon
He's got to be paired with Scotty
Shannon
Scheffler and he's paired with someone and it's a normal guy because I want to see what's a normal guy. Shoot.
Mario
But if you got a 300 pound guy running up and down the floor with his pants falling down, I'm watching it.
Shannon
Well, think about the guy on NC State. He was actually good.
Matt Jones
He kept his shorts up though, this guy. He was stumbling and fumbling and falling down.
Ryan Lemon
It was, I expected to see some talented basketball players.
Shannon
There were none.
Ryan Lemon
There were none.
Shannon
Not even anyone close were none.
Ryan Lemon
I thought you'd have a few guys just right out of college hoping this is their chance.
Shannon
No, it was just people off the street.
Sam
I love it.
Shannon
859-280-2287. Text machine. 772-774-5254. Also if you go, feel free to send the text machine. I'm going to spend a lot of the second hour with tidbits coming in from the practice.
Mario
Yes.

Well, this is one.
Shannon
This is the first of Mario's.
Mario
His first song is the lead off song. It's going to be one of his favorites.
Shannon
This is the first of Mario's songs. What is this?
Matt Jones
Shebang by Drake.
Shannon
Shebang by Drake?
Matt Jones
Yeah. I like she Bangs by Ricky Martin better.
Shannon
How old is this song? Shannon Joe? This just came out.
Matt Jones
So this is new two months ago. Yeah.
Shannon
All right. Yeah. Give me, give me like 10 seconds of me listening. Okay, stop.

Ryan Lemon
He fought through it.
Shannon
He's straight, man.
Ryan Lemon
Come on. Just keep living your life. It'll go away.
Lewis Kalb
All right.
Shannon
I mean, this is something low key. Okay, so that's good. That's.
Sam
That's.
Shannon
I'm not gonna. I mean, no hat. That's okay.
Ryan Lemon
See?
Shannon
All right.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. No, the Iceman.
Shannon
I'm letting Mario program one. One musical show.
Mario
All six songs are his picks today. Right.
Shannon
And Drake. She bangs.
Ryan Lemon
It's just one word. Shebang.
Shannon
Okay. Shebang.
Matt Jones
Shebang.
Sam
Yes.
Ryan Lemon
Where's the beef? It's
Shannon
859-280-2287. It looks like there are people drew that are already like.
Sam
They're.
Shannon
They're gathering people.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, I know several people there. I've gotten a picture. One person just text me. He's about 60ish in line. Zach, from the websites there we got. I know a few people.
Shannon
There is a horse debuting at Saratoga today, I'm told named Coach Pope.
Mario
Really?
Shannon
In race one. Once you look up and see what the odds are for Coach Pope. Saratoga, race one. A maiden two year old debuting today. Do you think this kenny.
Ryan Lemon
Kenny McPeak horse?
Shannon
Kenny McPeak do you think this determines, Shannon, the season, how Coach Pope does?
Matt Jones
Probably a long shot, but it's a big, beautiful horse. Big, beautiful body on it.
Shannon
It's beautiful.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon
Yeah, it's beautiful. One person writes, matt, that Phillies auction winner has been celebrated. He's already been on Sports RA Philadelphia. I guarantee you, he ends up with a job.
Mario
If you're the Phillies, you hire him for one of your minor league teams today. Where else are you going to be?
Matt Jones
Talking about the guy who's currently doing it?
Nick Turturro
He's.
Sam
Yeah.
Shannon
I mean, he's going to kick the people that are in the job. You get to.
Mario
You got to have two guys now, play by play. Guy to color.
Shannon
Just have him do the third inning every game.
Ryan Lemon
Just the third inning.
Matt Jones
So much for job security. If you're a Phillies announcer.
Ryan Lemon
Can I tell you, I smell a little bit of a setup with it? Like, that can't be that random. I'm just skeptical of all things anymore.
Shannon
You think he's fake?
Ryan Lemon
Well, I think they might have known he was good. I don't know if you rigged the auction. They said maybe someone with money wanted him to do it because they knew he's good. That wasn't. Just let me get off the street.
Shannon
No experience doing.
Ryan Lemon
No, I think he has experience. I think they might have even known a little bit, like, for anything in a game anymore. Mascot trips and throws popcorn on a fan. Everything staged. The kiss cam, everything staged. My antennas were up with this one.
Shannon
I hope you're wrong. I mean, I. I understand why you say that, because everything is very good.
Matt Jones
Why wouldn't he already be doing that for a living?
Shannon
You know, because he was a substitute teacher.
Sam
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
He wasn't a fireman or police officers, Shannon.
Carrie Brownstein
Yeah.
Matt Jones
No, I'm just saying, like. But if he was, like, a ringer, you would think that he would already have a career in that, right?
Ryan Lemon
No, I'm just saying to be like, oh, this random fan off the street. Let's see how he can do. And he's.
Shannon
No, he's really good at. Way too good. But it's like, maybe he practiced. Like, maybe he knew it was coming. He did the reps to get ready.
Ryan Lemon
Maybe it's like when they pick the fat guy out of the crowd to dance with the dance team, he ends up being this phenomenal dancer that choreographed
Shannon
with him for three weeks. But this is. I would say this. If you cheated, say it quickly.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon
Because the backlash will be harsh and people sniff.
Ryan Lemon
I would say it's more likely because it was an auction but someone with money probably knew he was good, wanted to have the opportunity they wanted for him.
Matt Jones
The Detroit Pistons certainly didn't have any ringers in their tryouts.
Shannon
All right, do you have someone that's on the line right now? Right.
Matt Jones
I've got lines loaded. I mean, who do you want?
Shannon
But do you have someone that's, like, standing in line right now?
Matt Jones
No one has said they're standing in line, but there's people on their way.
Shannon
Somebody who's.
Matt Jones
They may be at this.
Shannon
My neighbor. Listen, I love you, Troy, but you're not good at setting this up. I called the number three times. Now they say he's on the line, but we don't know which one he is. Right.
Matt Jones
I don't have anybody by that name.
Sam
Name.
Shannon
Okay.
Ryan Lemon
Another good game.
Matt Jones
It might help it.
Shannon
Call me. I call him. No way. He goes to voicemail. He says, call my wife. That goes to voicemail.
Ryan Lemon
Call Bush, Hamden's.
Shannon
What am I supposed to do?
Matt Jones
We'll just go through.
Shannon
Well, let's just put some people on the line.
Matt Jones
Brad.
Shannon
Brad. Go ahead, Brad.
Sam
Hey, fellas. I was actually on my way when I was on the phone with Shannon, but I'm actually in line now.
Matt Jones
There you go.
Shannon
All right. How many people are we talking about being in line?
Sam
I think there's about probably 2, 5300.
Shannon
Wow. So 250 or 300 already?
Ryan Lemon
Texas says 200.
Shannon
That's pretty good. That's pretty good considering he announced it at like 9:15 and it's a Thursday. And presumably this will go like an hour and a half. So more people will, like, maybe take an early lunch break and head there if those mowers. So are people. Are people excited?
Sam
I'm not really seeing a lot of emotion. They're just kind of standing with their hands in their pockets and waiting in line.
Shannon
Okay, so you're. You're not. You're not seeing a whole lot of emotion.
Sam
No. No.
Shannon
Okay.
Sam
It's.
Ryan Lemon
It's early.
Sam
I think everybody's just ready to get in. Yeah.
Lewis Kalb
All right.
Shannon
Well, thank you. I appreciate the call. May need to get somebody to lead a chance.
Mario
Yes.
Sam
Okay.
Shannon
You say Shannon, you got somebody that's first in line?
Matt Jones
The very first person. Right. Next guy in line.
Shannon
Okay. Who's this?
Matt Jones
This is Drew.
Lewis Kalb
Drew.
Shannon
Go ahead, Drew.
Sam
This is Drew. I'm the very first person here in line. We got about 120 out here, so not everybody's got. Yeah, I'm trying to be the. I'm trying to be the. Your reporter. How's Sam get that. He ain't even here yet.
Shannon
That's a good point. I tell you, you can be.
Sam
Ain't gonna make it.
Shannon
You can be the other reporter if you'll do me a favor. All right, you need the crowd in a C, A T, S chant for ksr. If you can get that going.
Sam
When? Right now?
Shannon
Yes, right now.
Birdy Disc Advertiser
Hold.
Sam
I'm gonna put you on speaker right now.
Shannon
Yeah, put me on.
Sam
I got you.
Shannon
All right.
Sam
All right. I'm on the phone with KSR right now. Let's go see a T, F.
Shannon
Sounds like he's the only one.
Nick Turturro
There you go.
Shannon
First of all, it sounded like you were the only one yelling. I. Did you not. I don't feel like. You got everybody. Got everybody going.
Sam
All right, hold on. I got you. I got you. I'm not gonna say no.
Shannon
Chance. Okay, go.
Sam
All right. What can I say? Oh, it's up to them. He said I was the only one. Matt Jones, he wants to hear y'. All. Whoa. Better.
Shannon
Much better.
Matt Jones
There's at least 10 people.
Sam
There you go.
Shannon
Much better. That was true. You had to give them the O to get everybody going. Seventh thing, 11 o'.
Sam
Clock.
Shannon
You call in, I'll let you be the other reporter. Okay?
Sam
Right. I got you, bro.
Shannon
You tell us what you see. Thank you very much.
Sam
All right. Gotcha.
Shannon
There you go. That's. Can TJ Smith, personal injury attorney. Call TJ he'll make him pay.
Matt Jones
Now more of Kentucky Sports Radio, presented by Stockton Mortgage. Here's Matt Jones.
Shannon
Candy. All right, now, this I can go with Turned up Shannon. Everybody's dancing in here. This is now. This is my jam. This is like the 90s.
Lewis Kalb
Yeah.
Shannon
How do you even know. This is before you were born.
Sam
Remember?
Shannon
They were roller skating.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah. Who is this?
Shannon
Yes, this is Candy Rain. So for real?
Ryan Lemon
For real.
Carrie Brownstein
Yeah.
Shannon
So for real. How do you. How did.
Nick Turturro
Why'd you pick this one?
Shannon
Listen, all right.
Matt Jones
This Candy Rain. The name of the. The song or the band?
Shannon
No, it's so for real.
Matt Jones
Oh, so for real is the band.
Shannon
I think they were kids, right?
Matt Jones
Candy Rain's a song. Okay.
Ryan Lemon
Candy Rain's the name.
Shannon
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
Just.
Shannon
Just one more chorus real quick. Oh, dude, I did. I. I haven't heard this song in years. Good call. All right, Mario's back in good graces now. He's gonna play something like Kodak Black or something here in a minute.
Mario
Kodak Ed.
Shannon
Kodak moment, Coach Pope. The horse is on Saturday, right? On Billy's wedding day.
Mario
All right.
Ryan Lemon
It's his debut.
Shannon
It's his debut. He's a. Yeah, he's a.
Mario
He.
Lewis Kalb
He.
Shannon
He's a maiden. So that's 12 to 1. 12 to 1. Is that the kind of odds of our season?
Ryan Lemon
I wish
Matt Jones
that for a start. 12 and 1.
Sam
Yeah.
Shannon
One person writes Matt Drew is kind of right, kind of wrong about the announcer. He apparently has called as an announcer. 30 years of kids baseball, he does the PA system, et cetera. He's never had a radio gig, and that's always been his dream, which is why his friends chipped in to get him to do this.
Ryan Lemon
Okay, I knew there had to be a little.
Shannon
I don't think that makes it fake.
Ryan Lemon
I don't think it's fake, but it. It's a guy that whoever bid on it knew he would be good at it. It wasn't like, oh, let's get this guy off the street to see how he can handle it. It's a guy that's at least done something.
Shannon
But that's not fake, Ryan. That's just a guy pursuing his dream.
Mario
I love the fact that his friends know that he's good at it. Just needs a break. Let's chip in and get this opportunity for him and get him on the air. I love that part of the story.
Shannon
We should figure out, you know, Shannon, what is some Ryan. Ryan's dream is to what, Walmart greeter
Mario
or a ranger at a golf course. That'd be a good job.
Matt Jones
Ranger.
Shannon
Ranger. What do you mean, a ranger?
Mario
You know, drive around the golf course. Okay, guys, pick up your play a little bit. You're lagging a little bit. That guy, the ranger.
Shannon
So you just want to be the guy.
Matt Jones
Harasses.
Shannon
First of all, you don't even play golf, which is a weird thing for you to want to do.
Mario
I'm going to drive around on a golf court. Golf cart.
Shannon
You just want to drive around and tell people to play faster.
Mario
Yeah. And get paid for it. And then go be the Walmart greeter in the afternoon, maybe.
Shannon
One thing I love about you have the most simple desires.
Matt Jones
That's your dream.
Shannon
Why not really, dude?
Mario
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
I might be a golf course ranger in retirement one day.
Mario
That'd be fun, wouldn't it?
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, you just be like, hey, are
Shannon
you the 9, 10, Shannon, I'm with you dream. Yeah, yeah.
Matt Jones
All the things you're doing, I mean,
Shannon
these are all very accessible guys.
Lewis Kalb
We can make you.
Shannon
I think if you want to work at Walmart, I think you could make that happen tomorrow.
Mario
Don't tease me now. Don't tease me.
Matt Jones
Ksr golf scramble's coming up. Make him the Ranger for the day.
Shannon
Oh, well, okay. I'll give you, like, an hour. You get to drive around and tell people to drive fast.
Ryan Lemon
See, I feel like he would just slow down play. He'd get caught up talking to people.
Shannon
That's true. You. I don't know that you would speed up play at all, but the Louisville golf scramble is coming, by the way, so you could do it.
Mario
I would enjoy that because you get to meet people all day long. Different people get to talk to them.
Shannon
Can I tell you. Can I tell you a disaster that we're heading for at the KSR golf scramble? The one radio show I'm trying to try and do my ESPN show there?
Mario
Yeah.
Shannon
There's just no way.
Mario
What do you.
Shannon
I can't even get to work in my house.
Ryan Lemon
Like.
Shannon
Like. Well, there's like. Well, you can set it up. It'll go over Starlink and, like, it's not gonna work.
Mario
You try to do it from the clubhouse.
Shannon
No, they want. I was gonna do it. They want me to do it on the 18th green.
Mario
Oh, wow.
Matt Jones
Forget about it.
Shannon
But. But the idea is that while the show's going on, people who are putting on the 18th green, but you're gonna
Matt Jones
have drunk people behind you, like on ESPN plus.
Shannon
Well, I'm gonna tell everybody before the shotgun. Hey, everybody, you can't be Dr. And putting. But the idea was, you know, just something different while we're doing the show, rather than just looking at our faces, you'll be able to watch these people putt.
Ryan Lemon
And radio's better on the scene. Like, we've.
Shannon
Radio's always better.
Ryan Lemon
We go to random places.
Shannon
I mean, it could work. It could be a disaster. Shannon. I know it probably will be a
Matt Jones
disaster, but for listeners, they kind of like that sometimes.
Shannon
But for listeners, sometimes when things. I mean, I'm completely just moving what I do here over there. Let's just have ksl. Yeah.
Mario
Follow you from. To KSR to espn.
Sam
Right.
Ryan Lemon
I think you should at least try it. If it doesn't work, you say, you know what? We did our best. That's all you can do in this life.
Shannon
Exactly. And if it doesn't work, say. Well,
Sam
Watch.
Shannon
You got 10 minutes on Sophie Cunningham. Go 85928, 02287. Let's go to Knox. Go ahead, Knox.
Sam
Hello?
Shannon
Yes, Are you in the arena?
Sam
Oh, yeah, we. We're at the front row. They're looking pretty good right now.
Shannon
Oh, are they already started?
Sam
They look really good. I'm Pretty surprised.
Matt Jones
They just stretched.
Shannon
But, I mean, are they stretching or are they playing?
Sam
They're just shooting ball. They're not stretching or scrimmaging. They're just.
Shannon
All right, well, who looks like they're. Who looks like they're shooting the best?
Sam
I mean, Milan shooting three, but I don't really think that's a fair comparison to everybody else.
Shannon
Okay, but I haven't seen him shoot at Kentucky. Is Milan just nailing all of them?
Sam
I mean, I haven't seen him miss yet.
Ryan Lemon
Exciting.
Shannon
Has a mission he doesn't want to. Ksr. Ksr. Curse Knox the moment you said it. So. So he looks good in the Kentucky Blues.
Sam
I mean, everybody looks pretty good. They all wear it pretty well, like they were always meant to wear it.
Mario
That's a good line.
Shannon
All right, well, Knox, they're always meant to wear it. Appreciate it. You keep us up to date. This is happening in the. There you go.
Ryan Lemon
Appreciate it.
Shannon
We're getting live in arena.
Mario
Have we ever had a live open practice for the fans at rup?
Shannon
Well, okay, that's a great question. I mean, for Pope. No, I'm pretty sure Cal never did it like a real one. They do it at the tournament, but it's not really a practice, correct?
Ryan Lemon
No, not at all.
Shannon
Just standing around shooting.
Ryan Lemon
I don't even do regular practice.
Mario
I can't think of a practice that's been open.
Shannon
Well, I mean, you've been here longer than me.
Mario
You can.
Shannon
You ever remember an open practice at Rob?
Mario
You know, he had one for the media last year. Now I got to do one for the public this year. I can't remember one where they've opened it up outside of the. Like you said, the NCAA Tournament.
Shannon
See, now I want to go. Why are we stuck in here? Well, let's go stupid. How are we going to go? We have a show and we don't have a. Of doing it.
Mario
Shannon can. Shannon can handle it.
Shannon
You want Shannon to go solo while the three of us just go?
Mario
Yeah, did that this morning on the pre show. He could do it. Ksr.
Shannon
I like the idea of going in shifts. Do you think you could run over there?
Mario
Oh, run.
Shannon
No, I like this. Okay, it is 1040. How long you think it'll take you to walk to rupp Arena?
Mario
What, 10, 15 minutes?
Shannon
Now you gotta run. All right, here's what we're gonna do. Mario, heart attack, you're going with him. You're gonna get run over there as fast you can, okay? Get about seven to 10 minutes of watching, then run right Back and come on the air and tell us what you said.
Matt Jones
You can just call in on the phone.
Shannon
No, no, no. I want to watch. I want Mario to produce this entire thing. Mario, I'll be taken up for your music while you're gone. Okay? You got this, right?
Mario
I'm out right now.
Shannon
I mean, you don't have to run, but walk briskly.
Mario
Yeah.
Shannon
Okay. Get there as quick as you can.
Ryan Lemon
You're on a deadline, pretend to sell.
Shannon
I will see you. I need you here at 11:10.
Mario
11:10. Got it. Bye.
Shannon
Bye.
Ryan Lemon
He's got this.
Matt Jones
He won't even be there by 11 days.
Ryan Lemon
He just said I got to go pee first.
Shannon
Did you just. You're not. You cannot go pee.
Nick Turturro
Pee.
Matt Jones
Stop.
Shannon
Off I go. Filming there too. Okay, good. Good job.
Ryan Lemon
That's a crime.
Shannon
There you go. Do we think he gets back here by 11:10?
Matt Jones
No chance.
Ryan Lemon
Not 11:10, 11:20, maybe even 15.
Shannon
You text Jan and text ride. So he could be back at 11:20.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Shannon
To give him cause. Yeah, it may take him 20 minutes to get.
Ryan Lemon
It is a bit of haul to get there. They're on the high side. We don't know line to get in might slow him down.
Shannon
Okay. 859-280-2287. A lot of people had discussions yesterday about your drew, your comments about the team, and a lot of people seem to agree with you. Are you. Do you. Do you think you're sort of skepticism. Do you think that's the common opinion of UK fans?
Ryan Lemon
Pretty common. I mean, of my own friend groups, I'm probably one of the most optimistic. Like, I know people that are much worse than me. It's just as we've said with. We brought up that Mark story last week. The memories we have and what makes being a Kentucky basketball fan, those are getting farther and farther away. Like, not even playing on the weekend of the SEC tournament, let alone holding the trophy. We're not even playing in it and haven't played in a long time. Those are things we just got so used to, and that's why we love Kentucky or big moments like that. We're not a part of them anymore, so.
Shannon
But let's say they go and win. What's the first big game? Champions Classic. Say they go win in the Champions Classic. Is that in Chicago?
Ryan Lemon
It's in Chicago.
Shannon
Everybody will be on board then, right?
Sam
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
I don't want to act like I'm not on board, but like most seasons were. Well, formally most seasons until this decade, we're sticking our chest out booking our final four rooms already and that we
Shannon
were like that the first two years of too. I mean I I do think it's easy to forget how it ends, but we were very confident at the beginning of both those years.
Ryan Lemon
Yeah, we're used to like knowing where the final four city is years in advance because we're planning on being there. And I just I don't have a lot of hope in getting there this year with how things current stand, but I can easily be surprised. This is early. I could happily be wrong, but I I miss the days of being kind of a cocky Kentucky fan because you know you're going to be in the conversation every year.
Shannon
One person writes the you asking Ryan to go him seems skeptical but then saying he can get there and then having to say he has to go pee is the most Ryan Lemon I
Ryan Lemon
think he just used it as the opportunity.
Shannon
I think that's exactly, you know, summer is in full swing and whether you are campside, lakeside or poolside, Noche Linda Farms is here for your grilling needs. One person's at the text machine and said Matt Knox is correct. Milan made by my account 23 of 24 threes to start the practice official stat.
Ryan Lemon
I'm writing that down.
Shannon
It's pretty good in it.
Sam
Thank you.
Shannon
24. Candy rain too. Like that. I'm just in a good mood.
Ryan Lemon
Great start to the show.
Shannon
Yes. I'm gonna make we're playing Candy Raid on ESPN too so I can dance.
Ryan Lemon
We're gonna pick by Mario.
Shannon
There's nothing like my American Express Platinum card. I love that I can earn hotel

Now, our town is small taters by most standards, right? But to the people who grew up here, it's everything.
Julie Pinero
What happens when a quiet Tennessee town becomes the front line in a battle over the future of America?
Shannon
Developers with right wing ties have purchased
Mario
hundreds of acres of land in the area.
Shannon
The first thing you see when it pops up is pioneers in Appalachia.
Julie Pinero
But they weren't just planting houses.
Shannon
We need cities on a shining hill
Sam
that exemplify and embody the Christian way of life.
Matt Jones
Stop right there. Is that normal?
Julie Pinero
A podcast about what happens when a small town becomes the site of a social experiment?

I mean, he must have done this for us because I like that. This is another one I like. This is what Week by swv.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Ryan Lemon
So.
Matt Jones
Well, he heard you make a F of Kodak Black, so then he texted me and said, hey, do this one next instead of Kodak Black.
Shannon
So I do like this one, though. This is like 90s jam, isn't it?
Ryan Lemon
Early 90s, like, cassette tape stuff.
Shannon
We've said this before, Shannon, though. The 90s. The 90s were the best music of all time. And I'll even. I'll even go farther as to say I think the 90s. We will look back in 100 years. They will look back and say the best time to live was the 90s. We will.
Ryan Lemon
I completely agree.
Shannon
Pre 9 11.
Matt Jones
Yep. We kind of had the Internet a little bit, you know.
Shannon
Exactly. Had it enough to get the good out of it without it controlling our lives.
Sam
Right.
Shannon
No cell phone. Movies.
Ryan Lemon
Movies were much.
Shannon
Movies were the best. No better movies than the 90s best time. Let me give you genres of music where in my opinion, the best was then country. Not been a better time for country music than the 90s.
Ryan Lemon
Now we say 90s country.
Shannon
90s country is a thing. There are bands that come out and just play 90s country, the kind of music you like, Shannon. Like alternative rock. Like, nothing was better than the 90s. Right.
Matt Jones
I agree with you on that. Yep. 90s were the best time for rock, Rap.
Sam
Rap.
Shannon
I'm not a rap aficionado, but 90s rap, come on, people still reference Biggie, Tupac, Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, et cetera, Right?
Ryan Lemon
Play the hits.
Shannon
Jay Z was. Came at the end of that. Pop music was also good. I mean, whether you like it or not, back streets back. All right, it's the best time.
Ryan Lemon
And then Kentucky basketball dominated.
Shannon
Kentucky basketball dominated. That's right. The economy was good. Like, it was, you know, Clinton was, like, kind of serious but also kind of weird. And so that kind of worked.
Ryan Lemon
The Braves, more of my cowboys and the. All my teams were good.
Shannon
So you had Cowboys, 49ers, Yankees, Braves, Jordan, Tiger.
Ryan Lemon
I mean, I always say 96.
Shannon
American tennis, Agassi, Sampras. Like, we were still good at tennis in America.
Ryan Lemon
I think about even because I was of the age, video games, like the Nintendo 64 was peak video games for me. It's gotten too far along now.
Shannon
It was perfect. I feel like I'm playing real life. I don't want real life.
Ryan Lemon
It was just right in the mid-90s, Shannon.
Shannon
It was the best, right?
Matt Jones
It was. But is that just because we're now old and now everything?
Shannon
Glasses, you know, but you read statistics, and everyone says that kids are more depressed now, they have more anxiety issues.
Ryan Lemon
They don't hang out with each other.
Shannon
They don't hang out with each other all day. And I don't think they have as much fun. I think there are many pressures on kids now in social media that I think makes their life more.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but see, Ron would say the 80s are better than.
Shannon
Yeah, but he's wrong because he's older, though.
Ryan Lemon
The technology just needed a little more.
Shannon
Technology wasn't quite there in the 80s. You only had a handful of channels. 90s, you had a lot of channels, but. But there were still shared moments.
Ryan Lemon
You still had to wait for your music video. Now everything's in mtv. There was an excitement in waiting for, like, a countdown of music videos that yours would be coming up.
Shannon
You know, young people grow up now and, like, they don't know what their future is going to be. Like, they don't know. Are they going to be able to have a career or are they just going to be, like, working for the overlords of AI we still felt like we could do anything. Whether that was true or not, who knows? You could still be working class in America in the 90s before NATO kind of ruined that. I don't know, man. Give me a case that the 90s weren't the best.
Ryan Lemon
I don't have one. 96, specifically the best year that's ever existed.
Shannon
No, I think you could make worse years. All right, Sam is there. Sam, you've watched 20 minutes of practice. What do we find?
Sam
Yes, sir. First of all, Ryan Lemon and Mario just walked by me, so they are here.
Shannon
Wow, that's good.
Matt Jones
Time he took an Uber. Let's be real
Sam
quick. Frank is a freak. First of all, they were doing threes on one end with all guards. And then Milan, of course.
Shannon
So Frank is playing down low. Frank is playing yes.
Sam
Yeah.
Shannon
Oh, no big scoop, that Sam with the scoop.
Ryan Lemon
Scoop, Sam, first reported by Sam.
Shannon
So how does he like how big does he look in person?
Sam
Oh, he's massive. He's a beast. I would not want to talk bad about that man at all.
Shannon
All right, I like it. What else?
Sam
As I was going. Zoom Dialo energy. Mason. Hello.
Shannon
Go ahead.
Sam
Hey. Sorry. Zoom Diallo showing a lot of energy. And then Alex Wilkins is very, very vocal. Seems like he's taking the lead on a lot of this stuff.
Shannon
So Alex Wilkins the leader like that.
Sam
I can't confirm the Milan stat 23 to 24. As they were shooting threes.
Shannon
All right, Sam, you got me excited. All right, well, let's keep us up. We'll try again maybe a little later, okay?
Sam
Yes, sir.
Ryan Lemon
So.
Shannon
So a couple of big scoops there. One Frank's playing. Good to know that you've been worried about that.
Ryan Lemon
I'm worried about Frank. I love Frank. I think I said this when you were out. He will be. I don't know what will be on the court, but he's one of those fan favorites. Will remember just with his personality. Awesome guy. He laughs that people thought he was Zoom's dad in the photo when they moved in.
Shannon
Oh, does he think that's leans into the joke? We can make old man jokes and he's okay.
Ryan Lemon
He was making fun of himself. He said his teammates call him Gramps Grandpa. He mean we got like 30 minutes with him. I could have done another hour because he was just fun to listen to. He's going to be personality wise. Everyone's going to love big Frank.
Shannon
I mean, I know it's 20 minutes and listen, everybody, don't write me and say we're overreact. That's the point. Right, Shannon? We don't have a lot of information, so we got to soak up the information we have.
Matt Jones
This is all we have to base anything off Sam.
Julie Pinero
So.
Shannon
So we got Sam. I can't believe Ryan got there so quickly.
Ryan Lemon
Again with the break.
Matt Jones
He did not walk there.
Shannon
You think somebody gave him a ride?
Matt Jones
Absolutely. You know, come on.
Shannon
Or he got one of those.
Matt Jones
Got one of those scooters.
Shannon
Do you think they got a scooter?
Ryan Lemon
You know that walk from living there. And I park here for games. I'm impressed.
Shannon
15 minute walk. If you walk quickly and he walks slow.
Ryan Lemon
He's got those little.
Shannon
He's got he guys will be said. Alex Wilkins is the leader. I'm a big believer your best player has to be your leader. If he's going to be the best player, then he needs to be the leader.
Ryan Lemon
I can believe him being very vocal out there, too. I haven't seen him on the court, but another interview, he's just very outgoing, very confident, and then little things like the tbt, he's up. High five. And Archie, he just seems like a guy with a lot of personality and outgoing.
Shannon
All right, well, exciting first hour with. With everybody there. If you are there. I guess it'd be hard to listen while you're here. I don't know if they would like if everybody was listening, but if you can hear me and you want to come up and check in a 859-280-2287, we will talk about some more stuff. I bet no one's going to disagree with me about the 90 Shannon. It's. I think it's. I think it's science.
Matt Jones
Only Ryan would disagree.
Shannon
Well, he's wrong.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Shannon
So he's not here. We'll take a break. Be right back. It's Kentucky Sports Radio.
Julie Pinero
On Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman.
Shannon
Your duolingo is not going to come
Julie Pinero
back to you when a man is inside of you.
Sam
Oh, no.

This episode of Kentucky Sports Radio delivers a quintessential blend of UK (University of Kentucky) sports news, fan engagement, and lighthearted banter. The show opened with technical mishaps before quickly diving into the big story: Coach Mark Pope’s surprise invitation for fans to attend an open basketball practice at Rupp Arena. The hour is punctuated by live updates from fans on the scene, a viral story about a Phillies fan-turned-broadcaster, and classic KSR-style debates, including why the 1990s were “the best decade.”
This KSR hour is a vibrant slice of Kentucky fandom, mixing real-time sports reporting, relatable fan frustrations, joyful nostalgia, and radio hijinks. Mark Pope’s open practice creates a unique and interactive listening experience, as multiple on-the-ground correspondents give live color from Rupp Arena. The crew’s reaction to a viral radio moment, their 90s lovefest, and energetic crowd engagement make for a rich, memorable, and distinctly KSR episode.
