It was designed during COVID as if this was the 1960s. But we are here. And the rain in Lexington, icky. I saw Chris Bailey at Kentucky weather say that by 6:00am this morning, so only six hours into the day, we

had already broken the record in Lexington for most rain ever on August 12th.

[Drew Franklin]

On this day.

On this day, there's never been an August 12th with more rain.

And that was at 6am and it's still raining.

I said the other day, seven inches.

And everybody laughed. Yes, it's not going to rain seven,

but it's going to rain if it keeps raining all day. I mean it's like two and a half already.

Did the lightning wake you up the middle of night last woke up.

[Matt Jones]

I think I woke up at like 5:30 and couldn't go back to sleep. I mean the light, the thunder and lightning.

Yeah, that's as powerful a thunder and

lightning as I've ever heard.

It was unbelievable. Lightning display or just non stop? You know, one after the other. It lit up my whole bed.

Yes, it was.

Was it like that in Louisville?

It was wild here.

It was, yeah. Yeah. This morning. Same. Same there as it were here.

And there's a lot of people around

the state apparently don't have power. There's a lot. I think you said there's schools that are out, right.

Perry County, Powell county and not county all canceled school because no power.

So I hope, I hope everybody's okay because it was. For those of you that are outside the state, this was quite a show. And I think a lot of damage all across, especially south. South of us.

[Drew Franklin]

Is that where most of it was?

[Matt Jones]

I think a lot of the damage was south of us. I see like Somerset and Danville and you know, Casey county, that kind of stuff.

[Drew Franklin]

We'll be safe. You know, there's flooding now you got to deal with. So just, just be safe and be smart.

So. But I will start with one thing that is not so random, but I do think he's like important.

Mark Hill yesterday announced he was going to byu. Shannon, I don't know what is happening with byu.

[Ryan Lemond]

Do we have a cultural exchange program with these Mormons?

[Shannon]

Yeah, there's some sort of like.

We just exchanged things with like how think about all the stuff these last three years, right. That have happened with byu. We get Pope.

[Drew Franklin]

Right?

[Matt Jones]

Right. We get Colin Chandler. Then they get Colin Chandler.

[Ryan Lemond]

Then we try to get.

What's the kid's name that came and visited this year?

[Drew Franklin]

The kid point guard.

What was his name? Drawn a blank, already forgot his name.

And then Jackson Robinson.

It just continues to happen, which is so weird. Two schools that you would think would

have no connection to each other.

Never felt a connection to BYU ever at all. Until Mark Polk.

[Ryan Lemond]

And then the kid from Michigan State

right now is choosing between BYU and Kentucky again.

[Ryan Lemond]

But Mark Hill, he is the deputy

[Matt Jones]

athletic director or was leaving Kentucky for byu.

[Ryan Lemond]

Now, that's a name that a lot

[Matt Jones]

of people out there, Ryan may not know, right?

[Drew Franklin]

Correct.

[Matt Jones]

But he worked here for 27 years.

[Drew Franklin]

Started as the strength coach for football.

[Matt Jones]

He was the strength coach for Rich Brooks, who then moved into administration. We have quite a pathway of strength coaches to administration. Rock Oliver did that as well. And then he was essentially Mitch Barnhart's

[Ryan Lemond]

number three until Dwayne left.

[Matt Jones]

And then number two, really, for the last decade.

[Drew Franklin]

All right. Yeah.

[Matt Jones]

Wouldn't you agree?

[Drew Franklin]

Last year, 10, 12 years, Mark Hill, you see Mitch Barnhart, Mark Hill is right there with him.

[Matt Jones]

He was. And I think the goal of which, I mean was he was, people thought, going to be Mitch's replacement. Is that fair?

[Drew Franklin]

I think not only did people think that, I think maybe he even thought

[Ryan Lemond]

that he was huge in hiring Mark Pope.

[Drew Franklin]

Yes.

[Ryan Lemond]

I would say most of the communications

[Matt Jones]

that occurred for that hire were between Mark Hill and Mark Pope. Would you agree with that?

[Drew Franklin]

Totally agree.

[Matt Jones]

I mean, Mitch Barnhart, I think so, but I think Mark Hill was vital,

[Drew Franklin]

I think, in the hiring, in the hiring Mark Pope.

[Ryan Lemond]

So if you had asked me for

[Matt Jones]

the last five years, who's likely to be the next id, I would have said him.

[Drew Franklin]

I would have. Not even a thought. I would have said him.

[Matt Jones]

So he doesn't end up getting the job.

[Ryan Lemond]

I think he would have gotten the job last summer.

[Matt Jones]

I think the timing just didn't work. I think Mitch Barnhart's last year, which combined with Mark Stoops problems and then Mark Pope's bad year, essentially Stoops having the bad year that got him, you know, led to the separation last year. And then Pope's not so great year, pushed Mitch Barnhart out, which now pushed Mark Hill out. And I like Mark Hill. I think he's a good guy. I think he's done good stuff.

[Ryan Lemond]

But him leaving yesterday to me was like a symbolic turning of the page

[Matt Jones]

that the Mitch Barnhart era is over, over, over. And that everything, this athletic department, which for 20 plus years was Barnhart driven, everything was filtered through Mitch's worldview. In my opinion. Yesterday was a symbol that that is over and will not return. Do you agree?

[Drew Franklin]

I agree. Yeah. I think the athletic department made a very obvious they want to move on and move away from the Mitch Barnhart era by not giving Mark the job. I think a lot of people thought he was going to get the job and just would have a lot, maybe more of the same I think with him not getting the job and now Mark leaving the university, leaving town. Very symbolic. I think what's going on, I mean

there are behind the scenes

[Matt Jones]

the Mitch Barnhart power structure has basically been dismantled at uk.

[Ryan Lemond]

At uk, essentially everything having to do

[Matt Jones]

with athletics was either run by Mitch Barnhart or was administered by people that Mitch Barnhart picked.

[Ryan Lemond]

And during this summer all of those

[Matt Jones]

people have either left or have seen their roles change. Would you say that's fair?

[Drew Franklin]

And I think if you're J. J Bat. You want that?

[Ryan Lemond]

No, no. Yes. You, you, you, you. Nothing.

[Matt Jones]

You can't get rid of a head and then have everybody else.

[Drew Franklin]

You want to get your own people, your own staff.

[Ryan Lemond]

But I don't think people realize like in a month and a half UK athletics is just completely different to the point that we had a KSR staff

meeting the website Monday and I kind of once every three months sort of check in with them and we were

talking about like even in media relations nothing that happened before really applies now.

[Matt Jones]

You know what I mean?

[Ryan Lemond]

I mean just, just for listeners think about what the relationship with KSR has

[Matt Jones]

changed in six weeks.

[Drew Franklin]

You know we've had JMI people on our show that was.

[Ryan Lemond]

We've had Jay, you have a JMI

person tomorrow, Shannon co hosting with you on the pre show.

You know Mark Pope's called in here three times in four weeks.

That would have not have happened.

I don't think we did a show out there.

Just everything has changed and, and I

will say and this is just me personally and remember I like Mark Hill.

I was sitting there thinking last night it is amazing how most of the

things that I thought UK was doing terribly poorly in the last few years.

[Ryan Lemond]

How much of that was Mitch Barnhart driven?

[Matt Jones]

I think a lot of the issue, JMI related issues ultimately was a Mitch Barnhart thing. I think the media issues, Mitch Barnhart thing. Now I'm not trying to throw everything on him. He did positive things too. This is not like just dump on him.

[Ryan Lemond]

But I think fans are going to start seeing because this, we behind the

[Matt Jones]

scenes have seen this for a few weeks but I think fans are going

[Ryan Lemond]

to see a completely different athletic department

[Matt Jones]

over the next few weeks.

[Ryan Lemond]

Do you agree with that?

[Drew Franklin]

Yes, I think that's what Jay Bat what we were saying. He going to get his own staff, his own people in here and it's not going to be a complete wash. I mean what used to Happen here

[Ryan Lemond]

a little about what happened with that

[Matt Jones]

football quote, unquote, camp out.

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah.

[Matt Jones]

I don't know if that happens. I mean, they would have still picked their tailgate spots, but somebody would have come around and said, get out of here. Do you agree with that?

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah. You know, and like you said, I think Mitch Barnhart was grooming Mark Hill to be his replacement. And I think a year ago, if that had come up, he would have been the athletic director. It seems like after the seasons, we both. We just had.

[Matt Jones]

I think we see over the next eight months things that have never happened here.

[Ryan Lemond]

And I think some of them are

[Matt Jones]

going to be different in a way

[Ryan Lemond]

I think most fans will like. But then you're going to see, like, I could see them charging for things

[Matt Jones]

they didn't charge before. Yeah, right.

[Ryan Lemond]

I bet you, Shannon, they play music

they never played in that building before.

Yep.

No, I mean it.

No, no. I mean, like, Mitch's control was even to the point of, like, don't play music with these words.

He would listen to the older crowd, too, and the older crowd didn't want it.

But I even think at the end, he wasn't listening to anybody. Mitch. And again, this. I'm not trying to beat up on him. I have said, and I believe he

is the best athletic director of all time at Kentucky. I genuinely believe that.

But, like, lots of people who stay

[Matt Jones]

in a job for a long time

[Ryan Lemond]

think about people, like, think about listening. Think about your. You know, your grandparents. They get to a point that they think their way is the only way

[Matt Jones]

that can do anything.

And they also start sometimes to get, like, a God complex, that if I'm

[Matt Jones]

not here, this whole thing will fall apart. Right, right.

[Ryan Lemond]

That's what was happening with Mitch Barnhart to the point that, like, this is what I do.

[Matt Jones]

Because this is what you do.

[Drew Franklin]

I feel like, you know, he was kind of slow to rally around the nil stuff. Slow to rally around alcohol, sell stuff. I feel like Jay Bat and his new staff, they're going to be in the forefront and kind of be proactive thinking.

[Matt Jones]

Just think about the alcohol thing.

We were, like, the last school in

[Matt Jones]

the country to do that, and then

[Ryan Lemond]

when we did it, he acted like

[Matt Jones]

he was changing a revolution.

And we're like everybody else been doing this for a decade.

I think we were one of the last couple SEC schools to do it, weren't we?

I think we Were maybe one more that was. Was after us.

So I just would say all this

to say for fans, really, starting with that first football game in the next three or four weeks, I think you

Probably not just because I mean I think that would be appreciate the call the kind of thing that they would consider doing except for the fact that they've got every. I mean ultimately the need for revenue is higher. That's why I said I think there's going to be changes that people really like.

But there might be some changes they

don't because I think the need for revenue bad is going to be raising revenue. We are going to have a time this year where something happens, somebody gets charged for something or something that didn't used to happen, and people are going to complain. And I expect that to happen at some point.

He made it very clear. I think his main objective is to raise funds for the athletic department.

That is going to happen.

So when I say changes, I think 80 to 90% will be positive, but

The judges from different states that, you know, are going to allow players to play a fifth year. Why? The NCAA has appealed those injunctions. What benefit is it to the NCAA to appeal that? Like, why would they not be for it if. If it didn't sell? Aberdeen, you know, has a fifth year at Florida. Is that not more marketable for the ncaa?

I don't understand why the NCAA is fighting this I really don't. I don't understand why the NCAA is fighting. The CNCA doubled up yesterday and said they're fighting it. I don't get it. And let me. It's a good question. I appreciate the call. Here's what I don't understand. There are enforceable rulings from judges in, like, Tennessee and Ohio that says these players have to play.
