It is the local toy dealers KSR post game show. The Cats take a very difficult loss in overtime to preseason number one Texas in a game that they should have won but did not in overtime. 16 to 13 we're going to go ahead. I'm going to go ahead and open up the lines. I'm going to give my take on it and then I do want to take your phone calls. I think this is a game where there's a lot of various emotions that people can have and I want you to get a chance to express them. I'm just going to just start with mine. I I went to this game. I actually since COVID have not gone to a lot of games. Part of that is doing these post game shows trying to get out and get home in order to do them and part of it is I you, you know, I don't like to sit in the press box. So I don't, I don't end up going to a lot of games, but I went tonight because I. I just wanted to be in the environment and sort of. It's. It had been a while and, you know, I had no expectations for the game. I kind of thought Kentucky would keep it close, but I did not think they would win at any point. And then they did what Kentucky football does to me, which is they got me to believe because when the game was tied at 13 and went into overtime, I thought, you know what I mean, we got the momentum, their offense is dreadful. We can get. We score a touchdown, I think we win the game. And I do think if we score a touchdown, we win the game. I think we would have stopped them if we won the game, but we did not. And we'll talk about that in a second and you get the loss. So I did allow myself to get my hopes up in overtime and that was the first time in the game I had and it didn't work out. Here's the bottom line about the game. Kentucky was better. Kentucky had double the yards, 395 yards to 176 yards. Kentucky had the ball for 40 minutes. Texas had the ball for 20 minutes. Just if you just visually watch the game, Kentucky move the ball up and down the field. Texas had a couple of decently big plays, 30 and 40 yard games, but otherwise was able to do very little against a Kentucky defense that played really well. And as a side note, not trying to hate on the guy because I really like the Manning family, but Arch Manning is not good. And I have no idea where. I mean, I know where the hype came from, but boy, it looks absurd when you actually see it up close. So Kentucky was the better team, but they lost. And they lost for two reasons. One is relatively simple. Two huge punt returns. I mean, Texas does not get the ball in the end zone. If not for that punt return. They kicked it. We kicked it twice to one of the best kick punt returners in the country. He might be an all American punt returner. We kicked it to him twice. The first time the coverage was bad. Second time coverage was good. God misses the tackle. I'd have to go back and see who it was because I couldn't see it in real time. But I think the guy thought he was going to fair catch it and didn't and then just wasn't in position. And they missed one tackle and he goes for 40 yards. You take those two plays out of the game. Kentucky wins the game. But you have the plays so you deal with it. And the second thing is those third and fourth and one plays. And as I was thinking about, because I drove back to Louisville, so I was thinking about the, the, the Mark Stoops era. And you know we've talked a lot about last four minutes the first half, first four minutes the second half. They actually did all right with that tonight. But one of the consistent problems in addition to conservative play calling has been we have been bad at third and fourth and one in the last few years. I don't know if you remember two years ago. I feel like every game there was a major third and one or fourth and one that we just couldn't get. That was the Devin Leary year. I think that was probably the difference between Devin Leary being successful and not was we could not convert third and fourth ones. And tonight you know, you have the one in the first half and then you do it in overtime. Let's start with the first half. I don't know what they were doing running quarterback sneak back on back to back plays. Texas, the strength of their team is their defensive line. Every single guy on their defensive line is going to play in the NFL and two of the guys are going to be first round picks. And the only area that I think you could say where Kentucky was definitively not as good as Texas tonight was run the ball up the middle. And yet we did five straight plays, two in the first half and then three in the overtime where we tried to do that in situations that it didn't come close to working any of the times. The two quarterback sneaks in the first half were the worst calls I've ever seen. I think Bush maybe his angle because I was sitting there looking where the coaches box are. He had to have on third and one he had to have thought that, excuse me, it was third and two. He had to have thought it was like third inches because I don't know what he's doing on third and two. Running cutter sneak and then they get to fourth and inches and they get stopped. Disaster right there. I mean I think if you score a touchdown right there might be slightly a different game, but they get past it. The overtime, you know, in some ways the overtimes, as bad as it can go for Mark Stoops and Bush Ham, you have a 22 yard play on the first play to Kendrick Law that gets you to first and go from the three. At that point, unless you get a false start, you're going for it. I have no Problems, by the way, with Mark going for it on fourth down. Yeah, you could say, well, you kick a field goal, but. But the thing is they've got a good field goal kicker. So even if they can't get in the end zone, they're going to kick a field goal and you'll be right back to where you were before. You when you're first and go from the three and you're playing a team that was preseason number one on your home field and you've been criticized as a coach for many years for being too conservative, you got to go for it. So I have no problems with Mark going for it. He said he had no regrets for going for it. He shouldn't have any regrets. They should have gone for it. It's the play calls. I mean, if you go back and look at the play on fourth down, Dante Dowdell, he jumped from the four yard line. How did they think that was going to work? That the only place Texas dominated us all game was in the middle of the defense on the line of scrimmage and we went straight up the middle three straight times. They got, they got. I don't want to say they got conservative because they went for it, but the play calling was vanilla right there. And it's a shame because I actually think Bush Hamden called a pretty good game for most of the game. I mean, they were creative. They put Cutter in some good circumstances. I didn't like some of his sweeps and jets. We had like three or four go for loss of yards, but they did a lot of good stuff. I mean, they had 300. Look, they had 396 yards against a defense that's one of the best defenses in the country. So I can't criticize the play calling in general, but I sure can criticize it at the end. And it's a shame because this is the reality of the situation for everybody involved. None of you feel good about this game? None of you, not one of you feel good about this game. The days in year 13, the it's close, we feel good. It just doesn't work, especially with where we are in year 13. This. I actually think Kentucky played really well. I mean, put the punt, put the punt return coverage aside. I actually think Kentucky played really well. I think that defense played great. They did. I think Brad White owned Steve Sarkeesian, who's a really good play caller. I think Brad White did great. I thought Bush Hammond was all right. I thought Mark showed some guts. But you know what? When it mattered, they just didn't make the right decisions. And so part of me says, is this just how it's going to be like, even when we play well, even when we play well, we just can't do the last thing to get the win. Somebody ran through chat GPT and I don't trust chat GBT on most things. So I. But I. But the stat's too good for me to not at least acknowledge it. And I think it has to be close to true, even if it. Oh, it's not true. How many games has a team gotten double the yards and had double the time of possession and lost? And it said you have like a 97.8% winning to do that. Somebody did that. Now, I don't know if that's scientifically true, but I bet it's close to true. You have double the time of possession, you have double the yards. And I think we only had one turnover. There's no reason we should lose that game. And it was there for the taking. Was there for the taking. You had a third and one and a fourth and one in the first half and a second and three third and one fourth and one in the second half in our CD overtime and you couldn't convert and that's that. And you're not going to get a better chance than that because Texas offense is so bad. At the end of the day, when Mark Stoops brand of football is designed to give you a chance to win games like this. This is why we always play Georgia pretty well, is because we are built to play against teams like this. We are built to play against teams like Texas. And Mark Stoops's coaching philosophy will keep you close in games like this. But then you have. If you're. If that's going to be your philosophy, we're not going to be able to beat the teams that put up huge yards. I worry Tennessee will crush us next week. If you're going to play that philosophy, when you play a Texas team and you double them yards, you got to win. You got to win. And they just did. And there's a lot of positives coming out of this game. Cutter Bowley played really well. He made some bad decisions. He took some sacks he shouldn't have taken, but he has improved every game this year. He's gutsy. I like him. I like the kid. You got something there, right? You didn't even really get your best running back, didn't even really get all that many opportunities and you still did well. You saw some receivers make some plays. You know, there's a lot of good stuff. But when it came down to it, first and goal from the three, four plays at it, you got to score. If we score a touchdown, we win. They're not going to score it. Arch Manning was. Is. Was awful. They had eight first downs, folks. Eight. If I told you before the game, you're playing Texas, they're only gonna have eight first downs. You gotta win. We had 26. We had 26 first downs. They had eight and we lost. So where does that leave us? Well, I mean, you can't say that this game proves that Stoops can't coach because clearly he can. He had this team prepared when a lot of people. It would have been easy for this to be over two weeks since you last played. The fan base, including local media like myself, basically given up on the season. You could have lost the locker room, you could have lost the coaching staff. And they came out and they played really well. You also have to say that much maligned coordinators I actually thought had a pretty good game plan. And I will say the players played their hearts out the entire game. But in the end, you lost. And in the end, I guess, and this is what I'm interested to hear, what the fans say. 859-280-2287 does anybody come out of that game feeling more confident about the Stoops era than before? I think it was proven. For people that say Stoops is awful, I think they're wrong. But if your opinion was what I think a majority of the opinion of the fan base was, which is this program needs to go in a good different direction, is there anything that just happened that would change your mind about that? I think the answer is probably no. Unfortunately, I think the answer is probably no. And this was a good chance. This was a chance to get one. This was a chance me all. But Auburn may fire Hugh Freeze tomorrow. You know, this was a chance to maybe go into that Auburn Louisville thing and go, who knows, Maybe he just couldn't do it. And I hate it. I hate it for the players. It's great environment there. Tonight the fans showed up. Our bar was dominating the pregame by Texas people. But at the game there were a lot of Texas fans, but the Kentucky fans controlled the crowd and it was a good environment, especially the longer it went and just can't do it. So I worry that even though overall this was a positive performance, it was another disappointing ending. It was another sign of frustrations that have plagued the Stoops era. Poor play, calling down the stretch Special teams, mental errors. I think we come out of it, unfortunately, right back where we were before. 859-280-2287. I'm interested to hear what you think. By the way, I am still livid about the call that where they called the false start when we. They had 13 guys on the field. That didn't cost us. Ridiculous, but it is annoying. They had 13 guys on the field, we didn't do one thing wrong and we get the penalty. I mean, come on. But that's not what causes the game. What causes the game is first and go from the three and you can't get in. So 859-280-2287. We'll take your phone calls and be right back. It is the local toy dealers KSR post game show. Welcome back. It is the local toy dealers KSR post game show. Let's go for a couple of texts here from the text machine, which is 772-7745254. One person writes, Matt, what about the environment you said you haven't been in a while. Did you think the music and sound is better? Music, better choices? Sound is still not great. I noticed they had speakers on the field, Billy, which I've never seen before. I don't know if they've been doing that all year or not. So it was. It felt like it was a little better. But we still have like an old speaker system that isn't great. But I thought the fans were. I give the fans a lot of credit. I didn't know. I was kind of worried when I was at the bar earlier. I was like, is it gonna be all Texas fans in there? And there were a lot of Texas fans, but there were a lot of Kentucky fans too, and they were loud. So I thought the fans were good. The fans gave Kentucky a chance to win. So, you know, it kind of is what it is. One person writes, Matt, what about Mark Stoops in the postgame show and in the press conference? He sounded like someone who knows the fate that is coming. I didn't hear that, Billy, because I was listening to something else. What did it sound like? I mean, he was disappointed, as you would expect, but I don't know if he had resigned himself to being fired at this point. I mean, there's a lot. I don't think you could say he would be. I mean, I. I'm sure. Yeah, I don't think that's. I think what's a bigger deal for him is how he. He knows what the fans feel, you know, What? I mean, I don't think it's so much. He's worried about what Mitch does. I think he knows how the fans feel. Bursting goes, Matt, before we talk too much about Kentucky, can we just talk about how bad Arch Manning is? Really bad. I don't understand. I really don't. Because here's what this does, here's what Arch Manning does for me, and maybe the kid will get good in the end. I got nothing against Mannings. I really like Peyton and Eli. He's not good. And I have two. Two thoughts. One, these NFL draft mock drafts a year before the season. Billy, they're just worthless, right? Yeah. It's just talking like they're just worthless. I will say Todd McShay's been saying all year, he wasn't like, even before the season started, he was like, I don't know why people have Archman number one. So I give him. I mean, Todd McShay did say that, but they're worthless. He was number one in every mock draft. And he's the. Is he the worst quarterback we've played this year? Feels like it. I mean, he's not good. He missed open throw. Like, I. I don't get it. And then second, Paul Feinbaum said he was the best player of all time. He said he was the best college player since Tebow. Like, have you. Where did that come from? Like I said all summer on my show with Myron, if he was so good, why didn't he play in front of Quinn Ewers? But I had no idea he was like this. I kind of feel sorry for the kid. I do. I mean, I feel sorry for him. Put his name into Twitter during the game. My goodness, Pork. Somebody's poor kid. But I cannot believe how bad he is. So I don't know. But it just goes to show, mock drafts, at least before the season's over. I don't know how. How helpful they are. All right, who's up first?
B
Matt is up first.
A
Matt. Go ahead, Matt.
B
Yeah, Matt, I agree with you. I think the offense looked a lot better tonight, but still just the critical mistakes and then critical moments of the game. It's just frustrating. More heartbreak for as a Kentucky fan. And I still don't understand, like, how halfway through the year, our offense is still looks confused. I don't understand that. Like our office.
A
Well, at least in some key situations, they did. I mean, I thought in general they did. So, like the first 10 or 15 plays, we always script those. We look so good. Same thing in the second half by the way when you. The. The plays we script look so good, and then we get into these unique situations where it's not scripted, and then sometimes we look completely lost.
B
Yeah. But I think it might be a blessing in the stars because Barnhart probably would have given Stoops an extension if we would have won tonight, so.
A
Well, I appreciate. I appreciate the call. It would be interesting to see what would have happened. I mean, they wouldn't have given me extension, but if they won tonight, you know, I don't know what it means for the rest of the year, but I just. I don't know that this helped him at all. Even though we played, I think we played really well. I don't know that it helps because of how it ended. I really don't. Who's next? Justin. Justin. Go ahead, Justin.
B
Hey, Matt. How's it going? Appreciate you taking the call. I just wanted to talk about something that I experienced at the game tonight, and it was. It was kind of one of the most unprofessional things I'd seen from a UK staff. So, you guys know at the end of the half and into the end of the regulation, there was, like, 16, 14 seconds left. We didn't kick the field goal. I saw a fan. We kind of sit near the end of the end zone, a fan kind of yelling, saying, hey, why don't we go for it? Why don't we take a shot here when we kick the field goal with, like, 16 seconds left at the end of the interregulation, right? Mitch walked over to him, basically shoved. Shoved his finger in his face, told him to shut up, and went back underneath the goal post. Then they kicked the field goal, and he, like, kind of charged this van and was like, shove it. Shove it to him. And I was. I. I just, like. I've never seen an athletic director interact with a fan in that way.
A
I just want to be clear, and I can't. Obviously, I was not there, so I can't say, yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah. But you're saying you saw that.
B
Absolutely. Yeah. And actually, one of my buddies, because we. We couldn't believe it happened, one of my buddies saw on Twitter, like, a. An ESPN video, and you can see, like, Mitch, as the field goal is going through the uprights, him kind of, like, start walking and fist pumping at the fan, right? And I was. I was, like, kind of astounded. I was like, you know, he might not agree, right? I know, like, this is a legacy contract for him with Stoops, right? We all have our opinions on Whether or not Stoops is the right fit after 13 years, if maybe it's time for him to go, maybe it's not. I kind of lean somewhere in the middle. But, yeah, I was very shocked to see Mitch interact with a fan that way.
A
Right.
B
Fans spend a lot of money to go to these games, and I think he. That fan had a right to express his opinion about, you know, what he thought. We should have been going. You know, you even alluded to the conservative play call toward the end of the games. And. And that's interesting.
A
I appreciate you telling me, telling that story. I appreciate the call. I'll have to look at the video to see the thing about Mitch. I. I could see it, you know, for all the button, the top button. He can get pretty worked up. Yelling at fans is almost always a bad idea, though, if you're a coach or a player or an ad. So. But I. Of course, I can't. I didn't see it. So I'm just taking off. What, what, what he said. Let me on those things about the end of the first half and the end of the second half. I don't think they should have run another play on either of those. You did not have a timeout. Cutter had taken, like three or four bad sacks in the game. You could not risk him screwing that up. So I don't think they should have run another play at the end of the first half or the second half. I mean, honestly, what are you hoping happens? You can really only throw to the end zone because if you throw it short, you might not get down in time to stop the clock. But I do have a complaint. It's not about not running the play. It's Billy. Why are you not running the clock down? So it's the last play of the half, right. It didn't end up hurting them in either case. First time, Texas kneeled. Second time, same thing. But it could have. Could have. So, like, that's a little basic thing, but it's illustrative of what frustrates me. You're going to call your final time out. There's 15 seconds left. Just wait till there's four seconds left and then the game will end. Why are you doing it with 15 seconds left? You. You give them a chance to throw a Hail Mary or to throw a quick out and then get out of bounds, kick a long field goal. I just. It didn't matter. But it's just an example of the little things that drive me crazy that we sometimes do do. What's next, Patrick Patrick, Go ahead, Patrick.
B
Hey, Matt. First time caller who. So on that last drive, before I get into my point real quick, on that last drive, Texas was really only bringing three on the blitz. So I think taking a shot with 15 seconds, as long as Cutter throws it to the end zone, I mean, I think it's at least worth the risk.
A
But what if you get it picked off? I mean, when you say just throw it to the end zone, what if you get it picked off?
B
I mean, that's true, but I guess you know where we're at as Kentucky fans, you know, it's one of those things. It's like we might as well do.
A
It, you know, well, but he had a 52. He had what, a 52 yard field goal? He's a pretty good kicker. I think he's only missed one in his career before tonight. I think I'm fine with it. I mean, I understand the other case, but I'm fine with it. Like, I. It's. I don't know how many coaches would throw one to the end zone right there. Now, if you had one timeout, maybe you're right, but you had no timeout. So let's say you catch it at the five yard line, the clock might just run out, you know, and if you take a sack, done. You take a sack. Like, think about it, you're. You're 40 yards away to give your receiver time to get to the end zone. You might end up taking a sack.
B
But my point was that they were only rushing three on that drive.
A
Well, that's true. You did so you did say that.
B
We would have at least maybe had a chance. I see where you're coming from. But another thing I wanted real quick was just. I think the frustrating things for us as fans is that, you know, games like tonight, we know that we're so close, you know, and it's just so frustrating to be right there and know that we can be competitive and then to just know, like, are we stuck in this Stoops contract? You know, so that's all I had. Thanks, man.
A
Yeah, I appreciate the call. I mean, we, you know, it would be unfair to say we haven't won some of these games. We have. We beat Ole Miss last year. But, you know, it doesn't matter to me what we've done in the past. In some ways, this is about now, in the future. And I just don't know that anything tonight changed anything when it could have. I mean, if they had only won tonight and then didn't win again the rest of the year. That wouldn't have changed anything. But, you know, this would have been. You could have not. Here's the thing. We win that game, Billy. Texas is out of the playoff. Yeah. And the Arch, like Arch Manning. You know, I get a thing from my ESPN producers about what we're going to talk about tomorrow morning because we lead off with college football. We had in our thing, if Kentucky won, we have to talk about Archbann. Right. So, like, we could have been a national story. Instead, it's just another frustrating Kentucky loss. Well, quickly, about the future. I mean, if we learned anything, Cutter Bowley is the guy. I mean, he certainly. Yes, he certainly is now. You know, we'll see what happens with the way the. The. But he was great tonight. He was. Except for. Except for a few of those. A couple of those sacks. But you know what? That. Some of that's just having on. This is only, what, his fifth or sixth game.
B
Bad interception, too.
A
He should have thrown. That interception, though, was bad. But it did. It didn't. I mean, they ended up getting no points from it, so I didn't hate that one. It was a bad throw, but he was trying to make something happen. Who's next? Wade. Wade. Go ahead, Wade.
B
Hey, Matt. I think Mark Stoops hates all of us. Like, the way that he just tortures us in these kind of games, it just feels on purpose at this point. I'm just so tired of. At the beginning of today, I had no hope, and I honestly kind of wanted us to lose, to just get this season over with and maybe we can move on for the future. Fire him. But by the end of the game, I was. My heart was all in. And of course, it gets taken away in the worst way through a terrible game to watch. It wasn't fun. And I had my heart ripped out right at the end. And it feels like he's done that several times. At least once a year, he does that. And I'm just convinced that he hates me at this point.
A
I don't think he hates you, but I get what you're saying. They get you in just enough to believe, Right? Just enough to believe. And that's. And that. Because I did not believe until he made the kick to go to overtime. I didn't. I really didn't. I was like, well, we're gonna lose. And then I did.
B
Yeah.
A
And then I get it knocked out.
B
Yeah. And I agree. And I. I have to disagree with something you said earlier this week. When a fan called in and talked about nil and Taking that away from Stoops, I mean, we have no leverage in this contract situation here. And us paying all this money for three wins a season just seems ridiculous when we could be paying it to something like baseball or softball or volleyball and having an amazing season. I mean, if he's going to make us miserable, then I feel like the only way we can get out of this is if we make him miserable and go have a better sport year for something else. Give it to anything else. Basketball. Give us a 40 million dollar basketball nil.
A
Yeah, well, I don't. I appreciate the call. I don't think, I don't think. What I think is unique is I think there are people who think that Mark Stoops, like, wants to hold the program hostage. I actually don't think that's true. I think when you hear his comments, he knows what the fans think and I think it hurts him. Part of what makes me sad about this is if we go down this path, I know what I'm going to say. And on one of these shows, right? I mean, I'm not. I know what I'm gonna have to say at the end of the year if it stays like this. And the thing is he knows that's how fans feel and it bothers him. Whereas with Caliperi, Caliperi was the opposite. Caliperi was like, I'm gonna do it to show the fans, like stick it to the fan. That's not how Mark feels. It hurts Mark that the fans feel the way they do. And that makes me sad because, like, he wants to be loved by the fans. So part of the reason I kind of think this is going to end the way I think it's going to end is I think he's going to want it to too. Unless something changes. And we can't completely throw that away because we almost won tonight, Billy. You know what I mean? We almost won. Yeah. And goes back to that collars point. If they would have just gotten blown out and lost and oh, listen, it was 10 to 3. I thought what was going to happen was we were going to go three and out and then they were going to score a touchdown. It was going to be 17:3, which was exactly what I thought the score would be before the game. And I was like, well, this is, this is, you know, we scored three points. This is terrible. And then we did just enough to break all our hearts. Yeah. Who's next? Ethan. Ethan. Go ahead, Ethan.
B
Hey, Matt, how's it going?
A
What's up?
B
Look there. I know we can't get out of the whole Stoops contract situation. But there is absolutely no reason as to why Bush Hamden has a job Monday morning. There has got to be an offensive analyst on this offensive. Anything on this staff that knows how to get.
A
Oh, okay. So I understand where you're coming from on that, but let me, let me just play devil's advocate and say your thoughts, because I think the calls on second, third and fourth down are indefensible, especially when paired with the plays in the first half on the third and one and fourth and one. With that said, he also went for 396 yards against one of the best defenses in the country. Doesn't that mean something?
B
I. I agree, but nobody's gonna remember that.
A
You're right. Like, you're right. You're right about it.
B
Like, it doesn't matter. It would have mattered if we had won the game and we had because they were not like you said earlier, they were not scoring when they got the ball back. If we have scored right there. He had four plays to score from the three yard line in overtime and he couldn't make it happen. It was three runs up the middle. It's just ridiculous.
A
And that will probably be. And I appreciate the call. Whether Mark Stoops comes back or not, it is almost certainly the case. Bush Hampton will not be the offensive coordinator next year. And to the extent there was doubt left in that, it probably ended on those four plays. No matter what they end up doing the rest. I don't think you can probably. I don't think you can let him go Sunday because you're playing Tennessee Saturday and you're going to score a lot of points if you're going to have a chance. And I don't know that putting a new guy in there is going to make that happen. But yeah, I mean, him coming back probably ended with those plays at the end of the first, at the end of overtime, because you're. Because they would not have scored. Texas was done done. They were. They were done done if it wasn't for those punt returns. They have no offense, basically, so. And who would have ever thought Archmage, I mean, that. It's so crazy to me how bad they are offensively. One more and we'll take a break. Who's next?
B
Bedbug.
A
Bedbug, how are you?
B
Hey, what's going on? Matt and Billy, what's up? Hey. Well, before I start, I just want to say the players played their butt off. I mean, I'm, I'm really impressed how they played. They, they tried everything they could to win the game. They really did try, right?
A
Yes, but.
B
All right, so I'm, I'm 42, been watching the cat since what I'm. I was 8. To where I could, like, actually remember. And I'm not saying that I wanted. I wasn't rooting for them to lose the game, but at the same time, like, don't get me wrong, I wanted them to win, but at the same time, I'm like, man, if, if they win this game, then there's a chance that. That Stoops comes back.
A
Well, yeah, I mean, I know what you're saying, but like, you still have to be. You still have to want to win, right? Like, I mean, I think if you ever get to the point where you're rooting against your own team, your incentive, you know?
B
No, and that, that's, that's how I was trying to explain it to my fiance. I was like. I was like, I want them. It. It's so. It's so hard because I want them to win. I can't. I can't see them lose. I can't. I. I don't want them to lose, but I don't want this guy to come back because it's the same thing every single year. You know what I mean?
A
Yeah. No, I get it. I, I get what you're saying and I appreciate the call. You're not saying you want him to lose. At the same time, you want a definitive resolution. And in your case, that definitive resolution is. It sounds like you want a coaching change. That's why Drew and I have said all year five and seven would be the worst record you could have. But it's looking less and less like we're gonna get. Yep, five and seven. But if you had won tonight, you know, Auburn, I think Auburn might fire you freeze tomorrow. So you don't know what's going to happen there and then. Well, I mean, Vandy's really good, so I don't know that that looks different than it did earlier in the year. But Louisville. I know Louisville beat Miami, but I actually think if we don't, if we haven't quit, I actually think that game can be very competitive. But. But you didn't win. So. 859-280-2287. We'll take a break, take more calls. Be right back. Local Toy Dealers KSR Post Game Show. Welcome back. It is the Local Toy Dealers KSR Postgame Show. So somebody tagged Billy and I in a video of the kick and Mitch Barnhart is definitely pointing at somebody. Definitely fist. He's dead. He's definitely pointing somebody. Now that doesn't mean. That doesn't mean that it was what that guy said, but he's definitely pointing at somebody, Billy. I think that's fair to say. Yeah, that was. And he's pumping his fist, so, you know, certainly plausible what that guy says. Ads get frustrated too.
B
Maybe that's something that happened.
A
You had something. What was it? Yeah, we got to Talk about Seth.
B
McGowan for a second because at one.
A
Point in the game, he was wearing a gold watch on his wrist while he was playing. Yeah, I saw that. And. And then we've done that before, though. We had a guy do that. Can't remember. I think when we beat Florida on the road for the first time in like 2018, there was a guy, somebody. Maybe it was Juice Johnson. Somebody would made a big play that was wearing a watch. So that's not the first time I've seen that, but we go ahead. Okay.
B
And then McGowan had to leave.
A
He had a shoulder injury. They. They took him to the hospital, I believe. Is that true?
B
He then came back and then entered the game again? Yes.
A
Did they say that on the broadcast?
B
Yes. He actually exited the stadium from the.
A
Other end, which is where the ambulance us is. He was taken to the UK health.
B
Care and then came back.
A
He was supposed to get a. So I believe you, but is that a Billy source or is it someone say that that was the radio and TV broadcast. Okay. So. Okay, see, I didn't hear any of the broadcasts. Okay, well, that's crazy. And that would have been a legendary thing if we won. Right, because he came back in the game.
B
Yeah, came back into the game.
A
So that's incredible from him if that's true. That is incredible. That's got to be the most famous leaving the the stadium. Go the hospital. Since Tebow when Taylor windham hit him. 2000, 2007 or whatever that year. That was 859-280-2287. Who's up next? Enrique. Enrique. How are you, Enrique?
B
Good. How are you?
A
Good.
B
So my, my opening point is like the opening drive. I feel like we should have scored there.
A
We should have.
B
But I mean, third and two and you run a quarterback sneak.
A
Even I have. I would be interested if somebody should. I think Bush Hamden had to have thought it was third inches because I don't think you run on third and two. He. You got to remember where they're seated. Maybe there was an angle thing. They were Trying to go quick. I don't know. But like, for me, that makes no sense. A quarterback sneak, third and two, by the way. I thought they got a bad spot on that, too. You know, that's supposed to be where you start sliding. I think he started sliding just short of the line. I thought they got a bad spot on the, on the play before, but go ahead.
B
I just thought that was pronouncing like, I thought we should score there, you know, regardless. I think, you know, pressure, whatever, take three points. But it was close.
A
I mean, I didn't mind them going for it. I just wish they had a better break. Yeah.
B
Yeah.
A
So I honestly, I think that Mark.
B
Stoops is the best. I'm 32 years old. Mark Stoops is the best coach I've seen at Kentucky by far. I don't think it's dupes. I think, you know, it could here and there. We, we should have won this game by far.
A
But so do you let. Do you feel. Let's say the team. Let's say the team wins one game. Let's say they go win at Auburn, they finish 4 and 8. Would you want another year of Stoops?
B
I. I believe in Stoops. Yes.
A
Okay. All right. Well, good. All right. Appreciate the call. Nice to hear the, the other opinions. One person writes, Matt, do you think that's the most road fans of any team we've had? No. Tennessee has had times where they have more people because they're so close. But it was a lot for a team that's coming from that far. It was a lot. LSU when they came here last time, had a lot. But this was up there. I mean, there were a lot of Texas fans there. They were oddly, though, Billy, not into it. They were not loud at the game and what, like at my bar, they were like there. But they were like. I said they all looked like. And I say this is a compliment actually, because they were all very nice, but they all look like members of George H.W. bush's Republican Party.
B
Okay.
A
But you know what I'm saying, Like, they all were wearing like button up polos, brown polos and khaki shorts. And, you know, they had that like swoopy haircut, you know what I'm talking about? Like that, like, that's what. And they all were like, couldn't have been nicer. And they were all like gentlemen and like ladies. And I heard they tipped really well. So I'm pro Texas fans, but they were not very energetic for a group of people that came in Mass this far, I think they just must know about Arch. You know, I'd be interested to see. I'd be interested to see what they think of Arch because they can't think he's good, right? They would have lost this game. I mean, it would have been. It would have been bad for him. Yeah. Who's next? Kevin. Kevin. Go ahead, Kevin.
B
Hey, Matt. You cannot compound at this call anymore, what you just said. Anyway, let me preface this. First up, third, 13th region from Cumberland. And I had the greatest thing of backing up Freddie Wayne for our entire high school life. And he's my dog and I love.
A
Him and he's awesome.
B
Yeah, I never love it, but. And that's what my call it at my house tonight. We just got home and we're not mad. I mean, I think it's apathy. And, and. And that's scary too, when you say it's absolutely.
A
Did it like. Did it like. Because apathy is. I don't care whether we win or not. Did you feel apathy? No. Or were you just like.
B
No. Knew what was going to happen? Yeah, absolutely.
A
Yeah.
B
When. When. When the debacle before halftime happened. Looked at my wife and I was like, you know, let's. Let's anyway. But. And this is not my call. I'm. Dude, my. My day has been full. I mean, it's wonderful day and get to call in and talk about Freddie Wayne and well, Freddie, Maggie's well.
A
And yeah, we. Ryan and Drew just saw Freddie a few days ago and he. He always says to give the message that he loves the fans. And I just say everybody, you know, say a prayer for Freddy. He has good days, he has bad days.
B
I bet you've. I bet you've never had anybody on the call that Freddie Wayne's backup for four years, right?
A
If not, well there. I appreciate the call, man. Thank you very much.
B
Anyway. Well, no.
A
But everybody say, you know, keep Freddie in your thoughts. He's a. He loves this place. When they went and saw him, all he wanted to talk about was Kentucky football. So he's a. He's. He's a great man. And. Yeah. Who's up next? Nate is up next. Nate. Go ahead, Nate.
B
Yeah, man. There's. Let me run. Throw some stats at you. And like the other caller, I kind of. I mean, really setting the apathy. I know you're. You're given a both side scenario on that third and two QB Snake, but that's just absolutely like ridiculous.
A
Oh, I have no both sides. That was a terrible call. I mean, I'm not both sides. And I'm just trying to explain why he did it because if he, if that, if he didn't think it was third ninjas, then it might be the worst call I've ever seen.
B
Absolutely. And in Power Four games, Bush has only scored two touchdowns in one game. We've only won two SEC games at Kroger Field since November of 2021.
A
Now I want you to, I don't want you to skip over the first one. In Power 4 games against Power 4 teams, we have only scored in 13 of those games. We have only scored more than one touchdown once and we've never scored more than two. That's why you would have to make a change if no other stat was correct.
B
Well, yeah, especially at the head shed. And the only time we finished at the middle or top half of the SEC is when we had a head football coach in the United States Football League or the, you know, National Football League Roman on our sidelines. It's ridiculous. And all the programs surrounding us are getting better. Indiana, Vanderbilt, Louisville. Meanwhile, we're sitting here wondering how the hell we can't get in the end zone when we're running, you know, have 395 yards total offense. It's just ridiculous. Man, you still got to go.
A
Appreciate the call. I listen. The Vanderbilt, Indiana, Louisville, part of it is a huge part of it. There's no doubt. I mean, the last eight days have been about as bad as it could be in that respect. When you have Indiana, go win at Oregon, Louisville wins at Miami And Vandy beats LSU at home to go 6 and 1. You know, when you're the person, and I was this person for many years who says you can't win here, you can't this, you can't that. I don't think that's true anymore in the Nil era and in the Portal era and Vandy, especially Vandy in Indiana, showcase that. Louis, this different situation you're in, the acc, that's a different thing. But Vandy and Indiana are playing in big conferences and they're getting it done. Let's do one more and we'll take our final break. Who's next? Nathan. Nathan. Go ahead, Nathan.
B
Hey, Matt. This is a first time call.
A
Who up?
B
I think my, I was just kind of thinking like a lot of my frustrations have been just with the coaching. Like they, I agree they actually had a decent game plan tonight. But like, like a lot of callers have said have and you have said, like it's in those big moments that it's let us down. And I think that's where I, for myself, it's been very, very frustrating to see where it's like you can kind of like the players played a great game, but then, you know, in those big moments, like, you can't trust the coaching to get us through that.
A
Totally agree with you. Totally agree with you. I, Mark Stoops from moment one. There are three. Freddie Maggar once said there are three phases of coaching. There's like motivation, there's preparation, and then there's end game. Right. Motivation. Mark's like 90% successful. I was. There would have been a time I said, mark's guys always show up. They kind of quit at the end of last year and that was the first time that had happened. But they came out tonight. Mark's. Mark's great at motivation. I actually think they're pretty good at preparation over the years. I think the game plan tonight was great. They just put the shackles on tennis or on Texas offense and we actually had a pretty good game plan, I think, on our offense. So I wouldn't say he's 100% good at preparation, but a lot of times we are. And I think more often than not in game coaching, specifically the stuff that is literally in the moment, you have to figure it out and go X and go A or B based on what's just happened. And you have 20 seconds to figure it out. We've always been awful at it and I, I hate to say that, but it's a fact. We've been bad at time management from moment one and it's really never gotten better. And I know it's a little thing, but the fact that we didn't let the last play of the first half and the last play of the second half be our kicks and we left time on the clock is an example of what I'm talking about. Didn't matter, but it's a. It's. It's not understanding moments. And we've been bad at it and they are bad at it. And I'm. They're never going to get better at it. They've had 13 years. They've never been good at it. They've never been good at the end the moment. You have to decide something and you have to use the logic of what's just happened to figure out what you're going to do next. They're awful at it and they've always been awful at it. And that's very frustrating.
B
Yeah, that's where it's at for Me, I think Stoops has been. I mean there's that five year runner, he was so good for us. But then the last few years when you're not winning and then these small mistakes build up. I mean the family.
A
But how many times, how many times can you think of. And I'm not saying there's none. Okay, but how many games can you think of where in the moment we made a decision where we outsmarted the other team? Now there have been games where we out schemed the other team in lead up. I think got Stoops guys have played their hearts out for years. But can you think of a game of a time where we said, man, our staff really outsmarted them in that moment? I can't.
B
Honestly, not the top of my head.
A
I can't. And I appreciate the call. That's what I call those Lane Kiffin moments. Because Lane Kiffin I think actually screws up at a lot of other stuff. But in that he's as good as anybody. He's as good as anybody in a moment of coming up with something. Well, maybe last year against him when we threw that deep pass to Barry and Brown, maybe that was the moment, Billy, when we did do that. Yeah. But there haven't been many and I, that, that and it's never gotten better and I don't really know that it ever will. Is that the last time they won an SEC game? Yes. Yes. 859-280-2287 Text machine is 772-774-5254. We'll take a break, come back. Final segment. Local toy dealers KSR Post game show. Welcome back. Local toy dealers KSR Post Game Show. 859-280-2287. Alabama beats Tennessee, including a 99 yard interception return. And Tennessee may lose their baseball coach. So that's good, right? Yeah. Is he going to the majors? Is that official? No, it's not official, but it looks like he's, he's the favorite to get the Giants job. I think that would be, that would be, I mean, be interesting. See, you don't see a lot of college coaches go straight to the, to the majors. One person writes, Matt, I was at the game. I think the Texas fans are the nicest group of away fans I've ever seen here. You know, people had said to me that Texas fans were awful. You know, maybe it was just they didn't think they were gonna lose. I don't know. I found them to be like maybe the most pleasant LSU fans when they were here. Were really fun, but they tried. They talked trash and drank a lot. I don't know, man. This was. These were all, like, gentlemen. Maybe. Maybe it's just the group that decided to come the weekend of Keeneland. I don't know. By the way, Lexington was alive today in a way. Like, I don't know if I can ever remember it being like that. Like, every single part of town. I mean, you had so many different things going on from the scare fest at Rupp arena to the protest downtown to the parents weekend to the bot, to, like, bars filled with UK and Texas fans to Keeneland. It's just like the city was a buzz. We talked about yesterday, had the worst traffic in the history of Lexington, and I genuinely believe that's true today. I can't ever remember being in this city when everywhere you went, there were just people walking and having fun. Like, it was awesome. Really was a cool day. I mean, the ending stinks, but I don't. I don't think I've ever seen a day where the city had as many people out in. And it was perfect weather, too. Just a. Just an awesome day outside of the result of this game. All right, let's go ahead.
B
I was going to say it looked like Ochocinko had a good time at the game.
A
Yeah. How about Ochocinko in the student section? ESPN I saw, showed him and didn't mention him. They showed the student section and he was in it. Nobody noticed. I guess Mario.
B
Mario.
A
Mario saw him in there, went and interviewed him, and his video with him has gone viral. How about Mario bringing it and going viral from his interview with Ocho Cinco, where he's. Ocho said he was going to lead the fans onto the field if we want. I would have loved to have seen that. All right, let's do. We'll do six more and call it a night. So let's. Who's up first? Austin. Austin. Go ahead.
B
Matt. Special teams have been a problem since the start of Mark Stoop's tenure here. It's never been fixed, and that's par for the course. I come from Clark County, Indiana. I'm not sure if you're familiar with.
A
That at all, but not always. Not always. Remember, we had the national punter of the year. We had. We've had some really good kickers. I. I don't know. I think. I don't think that's a consistent Mark Stoops issue, although it was definitely an issue tonight.
B
I come from Clark County, Indiana. I'm not sure you're familiar with that at all? If you're not, just Google Jamie Noel Bush Hampden should be incarcerated for theft. He's making blood money, he's incompetent and he's a fraud. And he's the least successful OC in America. Please, Joe Craft, write your boy a 38.7 million dollar check so he can sit by his pool, sip RD1 and think about how awful of a coach and how bad of a leader he's been in. In the end of his tenure. Please, I beg.
A
I'll stop you right there. I appreciate the call I gave you. Gave you a minute there. Yeah. Well, that was the opposite of the one guy just in the last segment. Right. Five more. Who's next? Edward is next. Edward, go ahead.
B
Hey, Matt. I've been a season ticket holder since Couch was a sophomore and I'm as discouraged as I've ever been. We've got this clock mismanagement at the end of the first half, the end of the game, and then Paul Cutter bowling. He's played the game of his life and we don't give him a chance to win the game at the end. I mean, how do we do that?
A
Yeah, I mean, I, I know what you mean. I don't know. You know, not a ton of people. Well, I would say you're going to go four times from the three. You probably do at least want to give him one or two shots at it. I agree with you.
B
Yes.
A
And I thought he was great. I thought he was great. My only complaint was a couple times he took sacks in places where you just can't take a sack. We. One time it got us out of field goal range and, and we nearly got a safety once. But I mean, that, that's nitpicking because I thought he made some great throws and also thought he was really tough and had a couple runs that were really impressive.
B
The only time I thought he played good, played super. The, the only mistake he made was throwing that interception. I mean, the rest time, he really.
A
Didn'T have time as much as. Well, no, he does have time. So. So. And I appreciate the call he's got to make reads there on. I had a, I had, I had a guy sitting close to me who was talking about, he's in there, right. Like there were reads he just didn't make. So he didn't see the blitz coming and check off. And so he held on to the ball and so, you know, sometimes in a defense you're letting guys run free, but the quarterback's Got to know that so that he then gets rid of the ball and I think he just missed it a couple times. But the interception didn't bother me as much because it was third and 14. He was trying to make a play and they ended up not scoring. So I don't, I don't think that had a huge impact. Who's next?
B
Jerry?
A
Jerry. Go ahead, Jerry.
B
Yeah, man. First off, the Texas fans were great, including my lovely wife who grew up in Texas. I had to put up with her a longhorn gear over there tonight. But it, you know, you gotta take care of your wife as far as the game goes. You know, all through the game I felt at some point our offensive code coach would go by us. The setup was perfect. Texas comes out flat after that big game. Their offensive line aggress where they were against Florida and Arch is running for his life. Set up was perfect for us to upset him. I just, you just had that pit your stomach saying sooner or later we're going to have some screw up on offense. And sadly down there at the end in overtime, it did. You and I have to agree to get screen on not kicking the field go there. I think you kick field go there because your defense has been holding them out and then you just play on.
A
Yeah, but again, let's play it out. I mean, let's say you kick the field go right there, then they come down and let's say we hold them and then they kick a field goal. They got a good kicker so you like, you're not, it's not like they have a bad kicker. You assume they're going to miss it. So now you're right back to where you were before. Are you going to get a better chance than first and go from three the second time around? I mean, you know, I think you, you're sitting there playing the numbers. He's, he's at fourth and a half a yard. I just feel like you got a better chance of getting it on fourth and a half in yard than to go back and be first and 10 at the 25 again, which is what you're asking for.
B
Well, and, well, I guess probably the biggest problem I have with it is running those plays right in the strength of your defense.
A
I agree with that. That to me is a bigger issue.
B
And, and then, but, and then Sark tried to bail him out because, because the play is when that happens, you just, you just, you, you just, you just come out to 25 if you got a decent kicker, can still go game over and start almost Screwed that up.
A
He almost screwed it up. I'll tell you what, they also bailed us out in regulation when that guy ran out of bounds. I mean, we shouldn't have even been in overtime. Appreciate the call. I mean, that guy just ran out of bounds that he like. We got a break just to be in overtime there. I mean, I was happy for it, but yeah. Also, I think Mark should have called a timeout when we let 35 seconds run off the clock when it was clear they were in field goal range. I would have called timeout before. Ended up not really mattering. We got into field goal range, but again, that's kind of the clock management stuff. One person writes. Matt, seriously, you think they can beat Louisville? That's a problem with Kentucky fans. You don't live in reality. Yes, I do. I don't think we're the favorite. You all should be over a touchdown favorite. But let's play a little bit. You lost at home last week to Virginia. Virginia should have lost today to Washington state who's like 2 and 5. Okay, so no, I don't think it's crazy. You guys almost lost a pit. You did lose to Virginia. Now you beat Miami. That's awesome. But you're inconsistent. So is it crazy to think that Kentucky could play with little. No. Now do I think it's going to happen? Probably not. I think we're probably going to go into that game three and eight and our guys probably won't feel like they have a lot to play for and we'll probably lose. But, like, I don't understand how. Louisville fans, you just lost Virginia at home. Come on, you're not world beaters now. You're going to play like three bad teams in the next few weeks. So you're going to go into that Clemson game, you know what, seven and two or seven. No, eight one. But then you're going to lose to Clemson, who's not good. Just remember I told you that. Three more. Who's next? Josh is next. Josh. Go ahead, Josh.
B
Hey, Matt. So my big thing that I have an issue with is we let Cutter get into a flow. We let him move the ball down the field, move the ball down the field and then we immediately cut him off and just run the ball. Like we instantly stop all the momentum that he gets and just cut it off for. I don't know if it's a Hamden play call or if it's Stoops, but it just feels like we kill his entire momentum automatically just for no reason.
A
Yeah, well, I Mean, you do have to balance it a little bit of passing and running. But we weren't. I mean, Texas strength is the heart of their defense, is the interior of their defensive line. Like I said, all four of those guys are going the NFL and we appreciate the call in very important moments of the game. Continued to think that that was going to work. And I, I don't know how we'd have thought that. One person writes, matt, I'm a blue coat. Been working at these games for 40 years. Texas fans were the nicest fans as a group we've ever had. Well, that's nice. It Billy tie praise from a blue coat. Two more. Who's next?
B
Roy.
A
Roy. Go ahead, Roy.
B
Hey, guys. First time, long time.
A
What's up, man?
B
One thing that really hurt me tonight is I've been a Kentucky football fan for 29 years. I came out the womb, a UK fan, and we had four fumbles tonight and we didn't lose the one.
A
Oh, that's true. We did that. It's really true. Yeah. And that one, the guy, the guy tried to scoop and score. If he just falls, they get it and we ended up getting it back. You're right. With the bounces were on our side, man.
B
That, that last one that Ty Bryant must. I thought I was going to have annual.
A
Me too. Me too. No, you're right. That is, by the way, a very good point to make. You know, we did fumble the ball four times and got all four bounces. That's not going to happen in a lot of games, but go ahead.
B
I do have one positive thing to say. I've been going to your restaurant, your bar for a long time and I always get the wings. The wings are always good. The last time I went, I got a burger, I got the bacon jam burger and that was one of the best hamburgers I have ever had in my life. Man. I drive two and a half hours just to eat it again, to be honest with you.
A
Well, that's very nice of you. Thank you very much. We, we've, we appreciate the call. We've really, I think very much improved the food quality there since we reopened. And I'm very proud of. Today was our second busiest day ever. And if we had one, I think it would have been our busy. I think it would have been our best day ever. So thank you the folks who came. And I do have to say thank you, the Texas fans too. One more. Who's next? Bryant. Bryant, go ahead.
B
Hey, guys, I guess last call. I'll try to end on A positive because I wanted to pivot to the defense. I just want to ask, what would you rate this defense performance and do you think it's something that you can like, look forward to? I think it was great, because.
A
Great. I think it was. I mean, let me answer and then I'll give you the second thing. I think it was a nine and a half out of 10. I mean, let's look at it. We held them to 13 points in regulation. Seven of those points were because of a punt return where they got it inside of the five, and three of those points were because of a punt return where they got it inside of the 40. So 10 points were kind of almost given to them. So I would argue the defense really gave up like three points. They made open field tackles. This team has been bad the last couple years on open field tackles. They made almost all of them. The special teams missed a couple, but the defense, there was almost no big miss tackles. When they had to make a one on one play, they made it. They got pressure on Arch. They had a game plan where they dared him to beat them in, in kind of in 3/4 of the field range, like downfield. He couldn't. I thought the defense, I thought that was a great game. And Steve Sarkeesian is a very good play caller. So Brad White, I think deserves a ton of credit, but go ahead.
B
Yeah, because, I mean, I, I want to be confident going next week, but like, they played so good tonight and it's like, I feel like they might just feel deflated and I mean, yeah, that's a great Tennessee offense coming in. I just, I hate a great performance on defense and they come out and give up 40 points next week. So I just hope it's a positive move forward. But I'm not, I'm not so high on going in next week because.
A
Yeah, I'm not now. The next week's different. I appreciate the call. Next week's. Yeah, I mean, next week's different because Tennessee plays an offensive style. Tennessee plays an offensive style that's, that's much tougher for us. We're good against teams like this. We are not good against teams like Tennessee. So I, I'm not confident about next week's game. I thought this game could be close, but it wasn't just close. It was there for us to win. This wasn't a. I think I said on the pregame show, it'll be the fourth quarter, it'll be a one position game and we'll have the ball. That was true. What I didn't expect is we'll go to overtime and we will be the better team going into overtime and we should win. And we were. And then we didn't do it. And so you're left with just the emptiness of we needed it, we didn't get it. And now I think even though it was a great night in some ways in terms of performance and a huge step up, we're right back where we were before, where it's hard to feel really, really positive going forward. Thank you folks very much for staying up with me tonight. Tomorrow, be on ESPN from 10 to 1 and cover zero that evening. Billy, appreciate you staying up as well. We will see you later. Final Thoughts
Matt and the KSR team tell a familiar tale: Kentucky football lets hope creep in, only to end with a gut punch that seems all-too-common in the Mark Stoops era. Despite an excellent defensive showing and real progress from young QB Cutter Bowley, fan frustration boils over regarding coaching decisions and program direction. The show is a must-listen for the pulse of the fanbase and a microcosm of Kentucky football’s roller-coaster saga.
Notable Closing Quote
"When it came down to it, first and goal from the three, four plays at it, you gotta score. If we score a touchdown, we win... and they just didn’t do it." – Matt Jones [16:00]
