Doug Gottlieb
This is Doug Gottlieb from All Ball with Doug Gottlieb. Listen, I'm gonna get serious for a minute and talk about something personal. The hate in our country is getting out of control. In fact, it's at an all time high and people are facing just too much hate. A lot of people don't think it's a problem, I can tell you. I've experienced it firsthand, you know, living outside of the country in Russia, when my teammates found out I was Jewish and at the time, granted this is 25 years ago, I couldn't get into the country of Dubai. They just treated me differently. I knew what they were saying in Russian because I could speak it, but they didn't know I understood that they were talking behind my back. Look, there's lots of examples of it, but it's going to take all of us to stop this sort of hate because we're all on the same team in this country. So let's take a break from our hate so our team can regroup and regain our momentum. We need to take a time out against hate. Visit standuptolhate.org to help and join me in calling for time out against hate by following the at what's up with Hate? Or posting the Blue Square emoji standup to allhate.org that's the place to go if you want to help.

For more, check out Bose.com it is 1:50 in the morning in Lexington, Kentucky. It is 10:50 here in Seattle and how about that win Big Blue Nation. An absolute, absolute masterclass of a performance by Kentucky as they take out Gonzaga in one of the best non conference games that I can I can ever remember. Kentucky and Mark Pope become Mark Pope becomes only the second coach in UK history to win his first two games against top 10 opponents, having beaten Duke and Gonzaga by the other one. The other one's name was Adolph Rupp. He was pretty good. We are here at the Atlas Sports Bar. It is an unbelievable night. Kentucky beats Gonzaga 90 to 89. It's a local toy dealers KSR postgame show. I got everybody here. I got Drew, I got Shannon, I got Max, I got Ryan. Mario's wandering around taking fireball shots. It's absolutely packed with people. Seattle, the historic climate Pledge arena. The site for one of the best games I can remember in the non conference. The only thing that's even close for me is North Carolina and Kentucky and Vegas back the Malik Monk year. That's the only game I can remember. They like this cats down as many as 18 in the second half, come back and win in overtime. I got a lot of thoughts but let's each take a quick 10 22nd hit on what you thought about the game.
Sports Analyst
What a game. I mean that was a big shot after big shot. Really exciting game. I cannot believe Kentucky came back and won that game. I really can't. I mean I thought they were dead in the water and they found a way with with your point guard out, your backup point guard left and you still found a way to win the game. That's a sign of a good team right there, buddy.
Max
I want to give a shout out to two people. Matt always talks about the people driving home. Good luck to you. Next day and a half driving home from this one. Hopefully you've got plenty of time to call in. And then the second person, the most underrated person probably of the game, the witch, the witch that gave us the curse, breaking candles.
Commercial Announcer
Right.
Max
We got the greatest luck we've ever had in our life.
Commercial Announcer
Thank you to that witch.
Max
She was probably watching. She probably tuned in. Thank you so much.
Ryan
The KSR curse is broken. So was the rule of 71 tonight. Gonzaga got the 71 first. Kentucky still came back, showed a lot of fight, a lot of grit, and I think that going zone in the second half was the big difference in the game. It completely threw off Gonzaga's offense and the game changed at that moment.
Drew
Well, I'll just build off of Shannon's point there because it's kind of my point. It's the same recipe as the Duke game. They went down big, look like they didn't belong on the same court, and then they go into halftime, make the adjustments come out, look like a completely different team. Well, they have like a 16 to 2 run there. I mean, Gonzaga was scoring a will early and then out of the second half with the zone and just completely changed the intensity we've now seen at least twice. Pope calls it collecting data early. I wish he didn't have to collect so much.
Commercial Announcer
Yes.
Drew
But I mean, they come out as a completely different team in the second half again and get a top 10 win.
Commercial Announcer
All right, I'm going to do. I have a million things I could say, but I'm going to do like five things. Let's start with number one, Mark Pope. That's how you coach. Like, that's coaching right there. That is a. That is coaching. They come out in the first half, things don't really work. Adjustments at halftime looks like a different team in the second half. I mean, that's what. That's what you hope for. You hope you don't play like they did in the first half when they were down 16. But then you hope to get that in the second half. What an amazing job for Mark. If there were any questions about whether or not Mark was the guy and there shouldn't have been after Duke, there certainly isn't now. Second Jackson Robinson, we've been sitting there going, do they have a dude? Do they have a dude? Do they have a dude? He's the dude. All right. He's the dude. Andrew Carr played great too, don't get me wrong, but he's the dude. He had the ball in his hands. I thought the two most important plays of the game. Actually the three most important plays, the game, he made all of them. The two passes to start overtime, the one where he found away cut into the basket, the length of the court pass, which Mark Popes said in the post game prep press conference, well, that was pretty gutsy. Well, at least it worked.
Drew
Four different hands could have touched that. It went through and it went through.
Commercial Announcer
All of them and he caught it. And then the shot at the end, which was basically the game winning shot. All of those made by Jackson Robinson. Three, the defense. I think Shannon, you hit it with the one three one.
Ryan
Yep.
Commercial Announcer
I asked Pope in the post game press conference what made you play the 13 1. He goes, well, when you're getting crushed doing anything else, might as well try something. But it worked. It started as a one three one and then it morphed as it went on to a one three one that would collapse into a man to man. And Gonzaga seemed completely baffled by it. I think they did it seven plays and Gonzaga only scored on one and it was the last one. And it's just because Carr lost his man and gave up an open corner three. I think if Carr hadn't lost his man, they might not scored on that all the time. Those were huge plays, Shane. I think that was a really good point to bring that up. The environment, the Big Blue Nation, they can't hear me right now, but that was awesome. That was a great college basketball environment. 80% of the fans there were probably Gonzaga fans. Probably 20% were Kentucky fans. But those 20% were as loud as the 80% when Gonzaga would hit a shot, it'd be loud. When Kentucky would hit a shot to be loud. And I gotta tell you, I really like Gonzaga fans. They're what you should be. They're passionate, but they're not jerks. No, I mean it. They're not. They're into it, but they're not jerks. It was a great college basketball environment. I absolutely loved every minute of the game. I was nervous through a lot of it, but especially starting in the second half, that's what you want. And then last thing to win that game without Lamont Butler, I mean, I think he's our most important player and he didn't play. And then Kirk Kreesa went out and I've said, I took a lot of especially online mocking about saying Jackson Robinson or O way should be our backup point guard a lot. And it worked. I'm really sorry to hear it. Looks like Kirk Creesa has a real injury that it's not cramps. They said foot or ankle injury. Mark said they're going to do imaging. If you heard his voice, it didn't sound great. It didn't sound great what he was saying. I hate that because I. I'm going to say this about Kirk. He couldn't guard anybody tonight. But the play, he got hurt. If he ends up really hurt and misses the rest of the year, which I hope doesn't happen now, I don't have any reason to think that would or want wouldn't. But that last play shows why I do love that kid. He got hurt and he got back on defense, right? He got back on defense. And if he has a serious injury and he ended up getting back on defense, to me, Drew, that says something about that kid and I think it says kind of why he's on the team. But when he went out, Jackson Robinson did an amazing job kind of in that point guard. He basically played it the last 10 minutes of the game.
Drew
Before we get to Jackson, I'll add one curve thing. With about a minute left in regulation, I was looking at the bench. He had been in the back the whole time. A trainer literally carried him out. He was on one foot, didn't have a shoe on. He couldn't get to the bench by himself. A trainer. He had his arm around a trainer and they carried him and him on the bench and he cheered just sitting there with his foot up. Sounded like it's going to be bad. But the fact that he wanted to come out for that last minute. He was engaged as anyone out there in huddles and on the bench, but he could not stand up on it.
Commercial Announcer
I watched him come out and my last point. And I wish the people that are here could hear this. But you'll hear it when you listen to it on review. And if you are awake tonight, I know a lot of you are, you'll agree. If you're listening on podcast tomorrow, you'll agree. Here's what I felt like tonight after the game. This is what Kentucky basketball is supposed to be like. We've gotten away from that. You. You could. Everybody can decide when the when. And we got away from it. Some people think it happened the moment the last coach got here. I disagree with that. But I think we can all agree it started to happen in the last few years. It just hasn't been the same. It's been too toxic. It was losing. It was antagonistic. I just want to give you a sense of what it was like in there tonight. Not only all these people having fun, the atmosphere of a road game. It's been like that a lot. But when the game was over, just a few scenes. First of all, I went down on the court. A ton of Kentucky fans stayed for no reason. The team wasn't coming out. They just wanted to be there and celebrate with each other.
Ryan
Mark Pope actually came up and started hugging people.
Commercial Announcer
He did, but they had already kicked people out at that point. But they literally, all the people just gathered around the Kentucky bench just to say C and just hug strangers. Like, I just think that's awesome. That's what this is supposed to be. That's what makes all of this great. Are things like that, watching the fans celebrate, people giving each other high fives? Like, yeah, it can be cheesy. But you know what? That's what makes sports great, and that's what makes community great. And that's why this is special, are moments like that second we win the bag, I'm a human being just like anybody else. I haven't been to a press conference in four years. I stopped going for a variety of reasons. This was my first one in, like, four years. I asked a question, and when it was over, Mark Pope looked at me, and he looked at Jackson Robinson. He goes, jackson, see that guy right there? He and five other dudes drove here from Lexington, and he said, that's awesome. Jackson goes, are y'all driving back? Look. Do you know, like, just to notice that, right? Just to notice that. That's a cool thing. It was cool for me personally, but it's also just symbolic of how he notices things like that. And then finally, as we were about to walk out, Andy Katz, who I haven't seen in years, was doing an interview with Jackson Robinson and Mark Pope. And I watched. And at that moment, there was Mark Pope, his family, the players, Mitch Barnhart, Mark Hill, who's the assistant ad, and they were all hugging and talking to each other. It hasn't been like that in years. You could cut the tension backstage at games with a knife. Every single game, you'd see one person would see another person. You'd be like, they don't like each other. They don't like each other. And it wasn't just Cal. Cal was part of it, but there were other people, too. There was just. It was just always, he doesn't like her. He doesn't like him. He doesn't do, not tonight. And there was a moment where it just felt like, you know what, when it was going good, everybody was going in the same direction. Now, I don't think this team is as talented as 20, 10, 12, 15, maybe even 17, but man, they're fun to watch and man, they play hard and man, they seem like good kids. And if you can't get excited about watching this group even when they stink, they stunk in the first half. It's still so refreshing and fun. And oh yeah, they're still pretty good. As the fact they've beaten Duke and Gonzaga to start the season both on neutral courts.
Sports Analyst
It's a brotherhood that's been missing, I think between the players, between the players and the fan base coaches, you got it all. And like these, like you said, these UK fans that live up here, man, that's. It felt like a tournament atmosphere because they don't, they don't get experience that moment anymore. And they got to experience in front of their home people. I mean, it was just a special night to be there.
Commercial Announcer
Let me ask you a question, Billy. I know you always say we got to do something at 2am It's. I know we're coming to that. Do we need to take a break or do we need to talk through it?
Ryan
No, let's break right now and.
Commercial Announcer
Let's break right now so Billy can get his stupid 2am break in. I'm just kidding, Billy. I know you have to. We will come back. I want to talk some more with these guys and take your calls. 859-280-2287. An exciting win. The Cats beat Gonzaga. We'll be right back. This is the local Toyota Dealers KSR Postgame Show. Welcome back. It is the Local Toyota Dealers KSR Postgame Show. 859-280-2287. All right, those were my bigger thoughts. Let's just talk amongst us here a little bit before about the game. Ryan, this is the ties for the biggest margin of victory in a neutral court game Kentucky's ever overcome at halftime.
Sports Analyst
It was, it was unbelievable. You know, you're down 18, I think at one point early in the second half. You're your best, one of the best three point shooters in the country. Hit the side of the basket in the first half. I'm thinking, man, this game, there's, there's just no coming back. But they fought, clawed their way into it. We've all talked about it. Switching to that zone totally through Gonzaga off. Kentucky has to go to their third string point guard but you said it. Jackson. Robinson kind of became the guy. He became the man. Maybe he needs the ball in his hands like that, but he definitely became the man tonight.
Max
It wasn't just the one three one, though, for me. I mean, even before that, we started switching screens. We started going underneath.
Commercial Announcer
Yes.
Max
But Nembard absolutely tore us to shreds in the first half. He wasn't even close. Like Priest. You couldn't stay with him. Like, Wounds was coming off screens. He was just dumbing it to. It's AK right?
Commercial Announcer
Yeah.
Max
AKA was killing us. He probably had 45 million points in the first half.
Sports Analyst
Yeah.
Max
And then we said. And then Pope, because he actually makes adjustments as a good coach, is like, all right, let's not do this anymore. Let's go under screens. Let's switch screens. We saw the one three one for a little bit. It was great coaching. Nembad looked confused or something in the second half, and he's a great player. He literally, like, dribbled the ball sometimes. It was like, looking around, like, what should I do? I thought he.
Ryan
He should have shot more in the second half. I looked over at Ryan when it got down to, like, three points, and I go, I cannot believe this team came back and closed it down to three points going into tonight. Here's another stat for you. Gonzaga was 175, and, oh, leading by 10 or more at halftime. Kentucky tonight, not only one, they penetrated their soul.
Commercial Announcer
They did.
Drew
I mean, we're happy we won, but if I can be slightly negative, was doing whatever he want. I hated that guy all night. He played well in RUP last year. I hope we never see him again. It was nice to win. That dude had a hell of a game. They couldn't stop him much till the very end. Luckily missed some free throws. That guy was a nightmare.
Commercial Announcer
You said you had a story you wanted.
Drew
I did my rapid reaction talk. Some fans outside. Not many people had voices, you know, you mentioned we were outnumbered. They were drowning us out with the.
Commercial Announcer
Dj, by the way.
Drew
I don't know if y'all caught on, but when there would be a go, Big blue, the house DJ would, like, play music.
Commercial Announcer
Oh, yeah.
Drew
So. But the fans were trying to power through it. But I met someone that Matt Jones would appreciate.
Commercial Announcer
All right.
Drew
He's the one. I tweeted a picture of him. Everybody go look at it. But he. At halftime, he went to the bathroom and never came out.
Commercial Announcer
His friends? No, he stayed in the bathroom the.
Drew
Whole time with his four friends. They all vouched that he was texting.
Commercial Announcer
Them because no way.
Drew
At right out of halftime, we went.
Commercial Announcer
On a little run. No way.
Drew
Staying here. He did not come out till the game was over.
Commercial Announcer
I love it. Really.
Drew
That is the sacrifice that only BBN can make.
Commercial Announcer
That is awesome. I even asked him.
Drew
I was like, was there a TV in there? Nope, just sound. Just lived it out the whole.
Ryan
So they came from Kentucky, too.
Drew
They were from Denver.
Ryan
Okay, well, still, that's pretty far to.
Commercial Announcer
Go and not watch the game. That's unbelievable. I've done that, though. I've done that on many NCAA tablets. I know you have. Not in the bathroom, but I've left the arena for games before.
Drew
I want to make sure to tell you about that. He watched it all just, I guess, circling around urinals in there.
Sports Analyst
I thought you were leaving today. You know, when things weren't going well, you got up. I thought, oh, he's leaving.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah.
Max
You talk about Mark Pope giving us a shout out after the game. He needs to give that guy and the witch a shout out. Talk about two people that changed the game.
Commercial Announcer
They did. I few more think just stuff from the game. You mentioned Nimhart, who killed us in the first half. But it quickly became clear. And I tell you, as the first person to note this to me was Mario, who was sitting next to me. Mario just goes, that dude don't want to shoot.
Max
Yeah, he didn't.
Commercial Announcer
And he didn't. And it was clear Pope saw that and was basically daring him to shoot. Now, he did make a three at the end, but he did not want to shoot. You could tell. And when you were talking about going under screens, they were leaving him and he would not take the shot.
Max
He was just happy to just like pick and roll. We were going over the top and then he was just dishing it to Eke every single time or making his own layup. As soon as we started going underneath or switching it, you're daring him to shoot. And he just wouldn't do it. He was like, well, I'm just happy you're passing and just setting everyone else up. And he just had no impact after that. I don't think he did.
Commercial Announcer
Besides, he hit the big three at.
Max
The end, but besides that, he didn't do a thing in the second half.
Sports Analyst
You know, they locked up Ortega. I mean, he was locked up. You know, Colby had a bad shooting night, so he had to find somebody more offense beside Jackson, Robinson and Andrew Carr. The great biggest games the year, Duke and Gonzaga. He played his best offensive game.
Commercial Announcer
He played great.
Sports Analyst
Yes, he did you know, I always.
Commercial Announcer
Talk about threes and layups. Some people get sick of it. I used to drive me crazy. Maybe the two biggest shots of the game were mid range twos. One was by Andrew Carr that tied the game in regulation and one was by Jackson Robinson. It hurts me, but probably our two biggest shots, Drew, were mid range jumpers by those guys, both of them runners.
Drew
I haven't seen a shot chart or highlights or anything yet, but I felt like most of Jackson Robinson's points were mid range. He had two threes, but he showed a lot of mid range tonight and attacking in his, in his great night.
Ryan
That little fade away was so smooth that he knocked down there at the end.
Commercial Announcer
He looked in complete control at the end and I love that he looked. I felt like in the first half no one looked comfortable. Not one guy on our team looked comfortable. A couple guys. I still, I don't think Owe ever looked comfortable. I don't really think Bray ever looked comfortable. But Jackson looked comfortable at the end and so did Carr. And let me, at the end of regulation it didn't work, so we'll forget it. But Pope had a hell of a play right there.
Drew
Yes.
Commercial Announcer
I mean that was a hell of a play away. If he gets a half an inch higher, that's a dunk to win the game. And I think the secondary option was Carr was wide open for three. If he kicked it out, he did the one thing you can't do, which is throw it into Ike's hands. But it was a hell of a drawdown play.
Sports Analyst
Go ahead.
Max
We, we may not. I mean, I'm really hoping I'm right about this. I feel like Robinson turned the corner in the second half against Clemson. Like he just, he just changed the way that he played. And then tonight it led into that. I mean, all of a sudden we're seeing a guy that's like, yeah, give me the ball, I'll shoot it, I'll pass it. I'll do whatever we need to do to win the game. Like you could just see even those passes were just full of confidence.
Commercial Announcer
I mean that pass the court was a crazy two point game. And he throws at the length of the court to Amari Williams. Not exactly the surest hands in the world. And he nicks it and he puts it right on.
Drew
Think about the Duke game, Kobe Bryant, we have two full length court passes that have won games for us still in the beginning of the game. I don't know how you fix this. Maybe it's just experience, but just these. The Duke game in this one, just right out of the gate, they look so timid and scared. We know they're better because we saw him go on to win. But whatever happens in the beginning, they are completely different as it goes on. I don't know if they're just not used to being top and having Kentucky cross their chest in a game of that magnitude, but it's been two slow starts in their biggest games.
Sports Analyst
I just want to add this about Jackson, Robinson. Mark Pope said tonight Jackson played some backup point guard for him at byu, so he's comfortable in that role. I thought doing it back at point guards, the most comfortable he's looked at the entire season.
Commercial Announcer
Pope in the press conference, one of the things he said is he said at halftime, I looked at the coaches and he said, we realize they're pressing up on us. He didn't say this, but this is true. That's exactly what Clemson did. Let's go back to the game before that. That's exactly what Western did. Yeah. Those the teams that were giving us problems. They've decided we're going to get out on you on the three point line. We're going to make you beat us. He did not say this, but I think he had an implication of I don't know if our guys can beat people off the dribble consistently. So he said, I told the team, cuts, cuts, backdoor cuts, cuts. And that's what they did. Yeah, and they got a ton of action, max. A ton of pretty easy baskets or baskets that led to an open shot somewhere else through cuts.
Max
We talked about it in the post game after Clemson. Not enough off ball movement. It was just too much stand, dribble, stand dribble. Maybe too much Williams at the top. But tonight there was so much movement. There was probably three players that were kind of interesting. Obviously Perry and Chandler didn't do a whole lot. They kind of got their opportunity, didn't do much. One guy I thought that did really well, that moved around a lot was Garrison.
Commercial Announcer
I thought Garrison played well and on.
Max
Defense even as well, like exposed a little bit early. They were kind of picking on him. But then after that I thought Garrison was awesome.
Commercial Announcer
He also. What? He hit three. Hit the first career three. Three? Yeah.
Drew
A big stretch there.
Commercial Announcer
He did have a big stretch.
Drew
He's so raw still. Like Amare is a little more polished, but Garrison just comes in with so much energy.
Commercial Announcer
You know, we went on a 13 oh run and Shannon, unfortunately, I'm not 100% sure what we did because that's When Andy Katz was talking to me, and I assumed we were going to lose, so I was talking to Andy Katz, and he started talking to me. He really. He's really into politics. He started talking to me about Andy Beshear, and he was like, can Andy Beshear be the president? And I'm talking to him, and then I'm like, wait a minute, we're down 5. So I can't say I totally know what happened during that period, but that was obviously a huge.
Ryan
I heard a little bit of the conversation going on, and I heard you go, I got to get back to this game. It got down like three points. You go, I gotta get back to this game.
Commercial Announcer
I really like Andy. I haven't seen him in, like, maybe since COVID but I was. I literally missed that stretch. I was like, andy, it's a five point game. I got to turn back around.
Sports Analyst
We all was watch. Watching you talk to him. We thought maybe they're making a comeback. You're like, okay, I got to keep talking to him. They're playing well. You should have just kept talking to him.
Max
We might have won by 20.
Commercial Announcer
That's a good point. That is my fault. All right, so we're going to take your calls. It is loud in here. So here's what I'm gonna ask you. If you call, it's gonna be hard for us to hear. Please speak up. Don't ask me how I'm doing. Just assume it's great. We're doing great.
Ryan
We won.
Commercial Announcer
Soon as I say your name, just go. All right, here we go. Billy. Who's up first? Jordan. Jordan. Go ahead, Jordan.
Caller
Hey, Matt. I just want to say shout out to you guys for driving all the way out there. Another shout out to Shannon. We got a bunch of Bullet east alumni here.
Ryan
All right, Go Chargers.
Caller
Great win from the cat. I think Mark Pope proved that he's one of the best coaches in the country. I think that's two top five net wins this year already. It's just a great win, man. We're feeling great.
Commercial Announcer
It is a great win and two top five net wins. I do think that's huge. I mean, this is. I saw Matt Norlander say on. On Twitter, this is a seed line victory, basically meaning you might get one seed line higher for winning this. This technically is a road is a neutral game, but they also treat it as like a neutral plus because they realize you're only a few miles from campus. So I actually. You will get more credit for this than you would a regular neutral game. Yep.
Drew
And not just our resume, which this is huge for him. But I was thinking about just our fan expectations before halftime. It's like, well, maybe we're not what we thought we were. Now you come back and win this one and I'm walking with Mario.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah, we're title.
Drew
Yeah, well, think of that. But then I opened on Twitter. I saw the field of 68 was live and John Fanta said something like, big blue nation. Whatever you're drinking, drink it all, because you are for real. Like, you are. You're everything. You are. You are in the conversation. This is not a fluke. You beat Duke and Gonzaga. You've looked so good. He's saying whatever you want to think. Be crazy. Go be crazy.
Commercial Announcer
Duke beat Auburn, who I thought had been the best team in the country. Shannon. Gonzaga beat Baylor by 40.
Drew
I don't know.
Commercial Announcer
How did they lose to West Virginia? I have no. I didn't watch that game. So I don't know. But yeah, you should be excited.
Ryan
When you looked at the schedule when it first came out, the three games, Duke and then the last two that we just had were going to be the defining games to where you were like, okay, we know what we have.
Commercial Announcer
And we said, I said, I hope we go one and two. We went two and one and we beat the two best teams of the third.
Sports Analyst
Duke and Gonzaga are two of the best teams in the country. Flat out, no argument. And we just beat both of them. I think that says a lot.
Drew
And tonight, you know, it's rare. Kentucky fans are outnumbered.
Commercial Announcer
We were. We were. Yeah.
Drew
Shoot 28% from 3. You're better than that.
Sports Analyst
Yeah.
Drew
Lamont Butler doesn't play. Kurt Krisa goes down with an injury and you come back from down 16 and a half time to Beaconsag. I mean, Kentucky's for real.
Max
Just quickly. We gave a lot of shout outs to all the players and they deserve it. The first half, one on one, you know, like we talked about with screens and that we got our play. The coach made some of great changes. Like, yeah, Mark Pope deserves so much credit. Like, that is called coaching. That's halftime adjustments. That's called like being able to study film. Like he says, gathering data. Like all that stuff was absolutely unbelievable. Like that's the stuff you want to see from your coach because we may not have the most talented team, but if we can out scheme guys, then we're going.
Commercial Announcer
I totally agree. And one of these days we will have the most talented team. Like right now we don't have the. I don't we're not the most talented team, but one day we will have that. And then when you get that kind of coaching. Let me read you Fran for Sheila's tweet. This is kind of an amazing tweet from a national media member. Shannon. Yeah, you like. You're. You're kind of a dude who likes shade and he likes Fran. This is Fran for shield.
Ryan
I like Fran.
Commercial Announcer
I hated to see byu. BYU lose Mark Pope, but we saw this outstanding coaching last year in the Big 12. Every Kentucky fan should send a thank you note to Andy Enfield for leaving Arkansas.
Ryan
I like that, but that's kind of a shot. It is.
Commercial Announcer
Basically saying, thank Andy Enfield or, excuse me, Andy Infield for leaving usc. So that Musselman goes. So that Cal goes. Yeah, sorry.
Sports Analyst
I think that's. We should. And if you want to do that, we can make that happen. I'll gladly sign him one.
Drew
I'm trying. I'm really trying hard not to look backwards, but we don't win that game at all.
Commercial Announcer
Stop. We wouldn't even have been.
Drew
I mean it.
Commercial Announcer
Well, we saw. To be honest with you, let's be real. We saw that game last year at Rupp arena. We were down 17 at halftime and we lost by 20. This time we came back and won.
Sports Analyst
And we praised Mark Few for making last year. This year, Mark Pope makes the coaching adjustments against Few.
Commercial Announcer
So who's up next?
Doug Gottlieb
Matthew.
Commercial Announcer
Matthew. Go ahead, Matthew.
Caller
Hey. First of all, it's patio. It's like Matthew, but with a P. Secondly, I'm glad you guys made it out there safely. Dave travels back home to you. Third, I got one question for you, and I'm gonna hang up and listen.
Commercial Announcer
Tell me who's in the house tonight. Uk. There you go.
Max
Pat.
Sports Analyst
You never heard of a path?
Commercial Announcer
You ever heard of a patio before?
Max
No, never.
Commercial Announcer
They just keep giving Drew fireball shots.
Drew
This is straight bourbon.
Max
I don't want to be.
Commercial Announcer
It's only 11:00 here.
Max
I don't want to be drowning chicken fry right now. But Mock view is really small. I didn't realize how small.
Sports Analyst
He was a little guy. Little guy.
Max
Like, I did didn't. I thought he. I thought he was like seven foot. I was like seven foot, four foot tall.
Ryan
I couldn't tell. I mean, we were way up in the. The rafters. I couldn't tell how big it was.
Commercial Announcer
That was the scariest press row of all.
Ryan
It felt like you were going to fall off the edge of the earth.
Commercial Announcer
I. I don't really. You have vertigo?
Sports Analyst
Yeah.
Commercial Announcer
When we Stood up for the national anthem. I didn't feel safe. Did you? It.
Sports Analyst
It hit me with just walking on the corridor to our seat.
Ryan
If someone came up behind and gave you a good start, stiff pat on the back, you very well could have tumbled over.
Commercial Announcer
It was. That was. I don't. As a lawyer. Former lawyer.
Max
Yep.
Commercial Announcer
I think they need to redesign that.
Ryan
You're not an architect, though.
Commercial Announcer
Well, but they're asking. They're asking for an injury there. I'm a little worried.
Drew
When I was just reaching over my computer at one point to, like, plug in, I thought my hat was going to fall off and land on the court. Yeah, I've covered a lot of away games, and they usually give me bad seats because I work for ksr. That's the worst seat I've ever had. Ever. Yeah, I mean, that was. We were on the space, but it.
Commercial Announcer
Was nice to be in historic climate. Pleasure.
Ryan
Yeah, it was absolutely. With their plastic straws or paper straws.
Max
You look like you're about to abse down the wall. Like, you were that high up.
Drew
That was.
Commercial Announcer
That was. We were way up there.
Ryan
Well, we had good seats for, like, you know, a few minutes.
Drew
We couldn't really tell if, like, a ball was going to go in. It was just a different sight line.
Commercial Announcer
One of the Kentucky baskets I didn't know went in. I thought. I thought our bench was. Was screaming because they wanted a foul, and instead it had gone in and they were cheering. I couldn't tell from the angle we were in. Who's next?
Doug Gottlieb
Snoop.
Commercial Announcer
Snoop. Go ahead, Snoop.
Caller
Hey, Matt Jones.
Ryan
Robinson was out there.
Caller
That buddy was smoother than a pimp on ether. Going to search with his mama, man. He was smooth tonight, man. Stayed close, calm and collected. And I guess guns ag.
Commercial Announcer
They didn't realize.
Caller
Mark Pope picked some boys up from brother Woods, Kentucky. And those boys are ready for anything. I mean, anything. Matt Jones, they just ready.
Commercial Announcer
Listen, Robinson and Andrew Carr, Ryan were. Were dudes down the stretch. They weren't nervous. They wanted the ball. You know, I felt like a couple of our guys looked nervous. I love away, but I felt like he didn't want to shoot. And the one shot he took was not close. You know, Amari Williams frustrates me sometimes, but he's not scared. Like, he.
Drew
I mean, he's definitely not.
Commercial Announcer
He's not scared. Listen, that little hook shot he hit was a big shot he hit after. I mean, you know, he's not scared. I worry a little bit like. Like Kobe didn't want to shoot, but that lineup though that 5W did really well down the strike.
Sports Analyst
Gonzaga defensively really did. Took trying to take Ortega out and they did. When Brea came in, boom, they had that. Number 99 is one of the best defenders we faced.
Commercial Announcer
It's really good.
Sports Analyst
Really good. He was on Ortega most of the game. So that's when we needed Jackson Robinson to step up and Andrew Carr, and they did it, man. And that's what they're supposed to do. When you're the best player on the team, you got to step up in a big game.
Commercial Announcer
It's a good thing we didn't need those free throws at the car miss because he missed them both. But. But he did actually get the ball. Like he tapped the ball away.
Sports Analyst
He made the play.
Ryan
Oh, I mean, you can't have any complaints right now. You got the win. It was a feel good win. They come back and, you know, they very well could have laid down and gotten beat by 25 or 30 points again.
Commercial Announcer
We could have lost that game.
Ryan
Yeah.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah. I mean, we, you know, I mean, there. There's a world in which you quit and that's a 30 point. That's what Baylor did.
Ryan
And if I'm being honest, if I'm being honest, that's what I thought was going to happen.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah.
Drew
I wrote a post that we had already lost at halftime.
Commercial Announcer
Radio.
Max
Yeah, there's something to. And I know, Matt, you think that I'm a nerd for this, but there's something to.
Commercial Announcer
You love sports psychology. Correct.
Max
There's something to the way that Pope approaches this kind of stuff, talks about positive things, only focuses on the things he wants that gives you that belief at halftime. I mean, that team doesn't even. They've never even played really at Kentucky for that long. And they come out and they're like, we can still win this because if you don't believe that you're going to get knocked out by 30, it was a great.
Commercial Announcer
You're exactly right. And they do have that belief. And it was important during the time that Andy Katz was talking to me about politics that they needed to go on that run at that point, because then with 12 minutes left, it was a five point game.
Max
He.
Commercial Announcer
They basically, you know, got back in it during that stroke.
Ryan
K A T Z. Cats. Cats. Cats.
Commercial Announcer
Honestly have no idea. I honestly have no idea what happened. I, like, Andy just kept going. You don't think he can be president? And I'm like, why? Didn't say that. I was like Garrison for three. What did I miss? Garrison making me Brandon Garrison Hit a three pointer. Yes.
Drew
I like how he has a job to do also.
Commercial Announcer
So he was not.
Drew
What does he know?
Commercial Announcer
You know how, like, he's just writing.
Max
An Andy Bashir report.
Commercial Announcer
It's sort of like when, if you, if you, if you go somewhere and you have one person that likes something you like that no one else does. You know what I mean? So, for instance, I don't know if I like you.
Max
When we went to the Australian restaurant, the guy could speak Australian to me. I could chat to him for a little while.
Commercial Announcer
Yes, that's exactly like. It was like, hey, I think Andy was like, you're the only person in here that will want to talk about this, so I'm going to talk to you. But it just wasn't the exact moment. I wish he'd done it at halftime.
Max
Well, he changed the tide, though.
Commercial Announcer
He did change the time. No doubt he did. All right. 859-280-2287. We're going to take a break. We will come back. It's a local Toyota dealers KSR post game shot. Welcome back. It is the local toy dealers KSR post game show. Where's Mario?
Drew
I'm worried about our boy Mario.
Commercial Announcer
Very well.
Sports Analyst
Bring him home.
Drew
There's a lot of generous fans in here. I can attest he got a loud.
Commercial Announcer
Round of applause when he walked in. He got the biggest applause of anybody.
Sports Analyst
When he walked in. The whole crowd.
Commercial Announcer
Mario. Mario.
Max
He's reading some Spanish directions back to the Airbnb right now.
Commercial Announcer
We haven't even been to our Airbnb yet. I hope it. We literally drove into town, went straight to the bar for the pregame, into the arena.
Drew
This reminds me of the LA trip because we drove straight to the game. There was no, let's set her down to eat.
Commercial Announcer
We left.
Ryan
We've already, we've already spent more time in Seattle than we did in la.
Max
We, we've undersold it a little bit, honestly. And I'm really like, I just want to give more of a shout out. The Witch was maybe the biggest, pivotal moment in UK basketball history. Like, honestly, Honestly, like, we, we haven't. We just keep jumping over it. You guys keep laughing. That was pivotal.
Commercial Announcer
Yes.
Max
I mean, Mario were scared. Mario was even scared to walk into the.
Commercial Announcer
The building.
Max
I mean, you had Ryan getting soap rubbed on his head, laughing as if it was a joke. No, this stuff works.
Commercial Announcer
It works.
Max
And I suggest you go there. Whatever luck you need. Go there, get the candle, get the sage, Have a bath with your friends.
Commercial Announcer
Have showers with your friends.
Max
Do Whatever you need to do.
Drew
I take a bath with my friends right now. I'm so happy.
Commercial Announcer
Hey. What?
Drew
We'll take a BBN bath in here right now.
Commercial Announcer
This has been a long day, by the way. I mean, I will. We woke up this morning in Oregon. Just for the record, we woke up this morning in Pendleton in eastern Oregon. We weren't even in western Oregon. We were in eastern Oregon. We drove through an ice storm that if it had been 2 degrees colder, would have been treacherous us through those. Through those mountains. We got through it. We got to Seattle. I don't even really feel like I've been here because we've just parked and been walking around. It's been quite a day.
Sports Analyst
Pulled in, went straight to the bar for the pregame show, went straight to the arena for the game, came straight.
Commercial Announcer
To this bar for the post game show.
Drew
I saw Mario's post earlier where we met the family from Pineville.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah, that was today.
Max
Yeah.
Drew
No, so I saw this.
Caller
Are you sure?
Drew
Right before for our show. And actually got mad at myself. I'm like, man, you wore the same outfit two days in a row. And I was like, wait a minute. No, that was.
Commercial Announcer
That was today.
Sports Analyst
We met the.
Commercial Announcer
We. I mean, we ate in Yakima. Do you remember? Do you all even remember where we ate today?
Max
When we walked in the bar today?
Ryan
WW something.
Max
Drew made a comment. He was like, Cincinnati feels like two weeks ago, maybe three weeks ago.
Drew
That Bengal Steelers game was two months ago. Yeah, the Iowa trip, going to shoot from the Caitlyn Clark shot. That feels like three weeks ago.
Commercial Announcer
Listen, this has been. In all seriousness, it's been a great, like, it's been a lot of fun, but it's also been great with you all. The engagement. I mean, we. The morning show hit the top 20 nationally in podcast episodes. We've hit the top 20 in the show. But episodes during NFL season, that'll happen sometimes in March Madness, but during NFL season, that never happens. That just shows how many of you have followed and we really do appreciate.
Max
I'll give you a little insight. I had to stay at the bar because Matt didn't want to buy me a ticket because I like ramen. So I basically got left out and I got banished from the. I got banished from the group, so I had to sit the bar. But anyway, there was a lot of UK fans that came up to me and were asking me the typical questions, like, what's it really like on the trip? All that kind of stuff. I'll give a little teaser there's going to be a great story on Tuesday that's going to be told by Shannon, Matt, Drew, the guys that went to Pendleton bar.
Ryan
Oh, yeah.
Max
It's going to be unbelievable. So stay tuned for that because that.
Commercial Announcer
Might be the story that you should come in Tuesday. You can come in Tuesday for the app.
Sports Analyst
Good idea.
Max
No, because I'm going back to Pendleton.
Commercial Announcer
Pendleton.
Ryan
We're just going to drop you off there.
Commercial Announcer
You left your heart in Pendleton. All right, who's up next?
Drew
Jordan.
Commercial Announcer
Jordan. Go ahead, Jordan.
Caller
Hey, Matt. So tonight I had to get out.
Commercial Announcer
Of Matt Rife as quick as I.
Max
Could to get to the Chance Barn Grill.
Commercial Announcer
He wore. He wore a UK jersey to his set, right? He did.
Max
It was number nine.
Caller
It said rife on the back. He held the show, too. He held the show too long, though. So I got out of there as quick as I could. I showed up to KS Barn Grill at halftime, down 16. We didn't know if we wanted to play or not, But Kentucky started battling back. And I can say for your bar, it was the loudest crowd I've been to in that bar in a long time. With the cat Chance, with the fun, with everything. The bar was wild tonight.
Commercial Announcer
That's awesome. I'm glad to hear it. I was hoping somebody would send me a video so people didn't. I was worried everybody would leave at halftime. They stayed through it, people.
Caller
Nobody left it half. Whenever I showed up, nobody left. Everybody rallied through it. Everybody had a great time.
Commercial Announcer
The way if anybody has a video, I would love. I would love to see the video of. Of the bar because I bet it was good, but I obviously was not there.
Caller
Oh, the cat chants were wild throughout the entire second half. I mean, we immediately. I mean, the second half was just runs we started. I mean, we were.
Max
We.
Caller
We just played so good. We looked so good. It was a great time. And then also, I have one thing for Max. Max, my buddy, Adam Bank. What? Max, my buddy Adam Banks with me, wants me to tell you hello. And he also said that you need to come on his podcast again for our March Madness series.
Commercial Announcer
All right, well, we'll. We'll talk about it. Not at 2:30 in the morning and we'll figure it out. But thank you very much and I appreciate the call.
Sports Analyst
I just saw county guy.
Commercial Announcer
Hey, Martin county, how we doing? How are you? The one that called. Good to see you. I just saw a picture. It did look like people were going nuts there, right?
Drew
I don't know who at the bar is posted in our on the account But I saw a video, and it's.
Commercial Announcer
Supposed to be Mario, but he was here, so how would he even know?
Ryan
Well, whoever did Mario has an intern, I think.
Drew
Okay, question about excitement, and I'm trying to temper it, not lose my mind. If we could make a layup, what would we.
Commercial Announcer
Oh, my goodness.
Drew
We missed so many layup would go in.
Commercial Announcer
What would that. How many layups do we.
Drew
There are so many things Kentucky didn't do well and still won that game. It makes me think, well, if they do hit their threes.
Commercial Announcer
That's true. But to be fair, Gonzaga miss some open shots there.
Drew
Well, that was our defense.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah, they missed it.
Ryan
They went really cold from three until the end there.
Commercial Announcer
They only shot. I asked Mark in the post game, I said, if I told you you had scored 90 and you only hit seven threes, would you have believed it? He just went, no. And he said, we've got to work on getting more open threes.
Sports Analyst
We know that there were several possessions on the defensive end where Gonzaga got the offensive rebound, like, three times.
Commercial Announcer
Oh, my God.
Sports Analyst
And he kicked it back out for another open look. Offensive rebound, another open look.
Commercial Announcer
And they missed all those. Missed all of them on one of them. Who's up next? Mike. Mike. Go ahead, Mike. Mike. Okay. No, Mike. We'll go to Chris. Chris. By the way, we hit the KSR parlay plus.
Drew
Big team.
Ryan
See another KSR plus. Gone.
Commercial Announcer
Gone. KSR parlay hit plus 1350. That's a great one. Go ahead, Mike. Chris. Chris.
Caller
It's Chris. Hey, guys. So how good is it to have coaching again?
Commercial Announcer
It is. It's awesome. You're exactly right. That is. Well, that is one of the coolest things is to know. Like, to know that you can have that deficit and we could come back, right?
Caller
I mean, some belief, right? Number two, Second point, Clemson beat us up a little bit. Right? Like, I think they tried to do that again. I think teams are trying to create a blueprint how to beat us. And if you don't stop it now, it will go on all year, which we've seen year after year. So it's nice to see. See us put a stop to it right away.
Commercial Announcer
Right? Like, totally agree with that. Appreciate the call. We wilted physically in the first half. I mean, from a. From a physicality standpoint, we did not meet Gonzaga's challenge. But then in the second half, they turned that around.
Drew
So I was saying, we got to figure out what's. What's holding them back, because the Duke game, minutes into it, I remember saying, shouldn't be on the same floor with these guys. This is gonna get ugly. Even tonight, I think some of us were ready to drive back to Lexington before halftime. Met the guy that went to the bathroom, never came back. It's. I don't know what you can change. Maybe it's experience, but they got to get off to better starts. We know they can fix a bad start, but this is twice they've gone off. Getting so bad.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah, I. I couldn't hear what you said.
Drew
I was talking and couldn't even really tell what I was saying.
Commercial Announcer
And it's like when we ever. We pause. I don't think people were on the. Think we're on the air.
Sports Analyst
He could tell Drew was talking.
Commercial Announcer
He's.
Ryan
Drew back.
Drew
I got my back to him.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah. So I'm sure I made a great point.
Drew
I don't even know what I said.
Commercial Announcer
It's late.
Drew
Slow starts. Fix the slow start.
Commercial Announcer
Fix the slow start.
Max
The one thing that Butler being at actually kind of like, cleared up maybe for us. And we're going to keep learning more and more things about the team is. Is maybe. And even the Chris or injury maybe a little bit. Robinson comes in, you get Brea to play a little more minutes. He gets to spread the floor out. He might not be our best player, and he might. He's missed a lot in the last three games. He spreads the floor out, gives us more chance to score. All of a sudden, Car gets a bit more space.
Commercial Announcer
That's right.
Max
Gets to playing space. And Car was awesome. One on one.
Drew
Bray's defense, he's. He's obviously a weakness. So when he makes a good play, he needs to be celebrated. Like the two games ago where he took a charge.
Max
The block.
Drew
He made a great block and that was. That was cleaner than hell and he got called. So I hate it when a guy who's not good defensively makes a great play and he's got reward.
Ryan
We know that Bray is a good shooter. I don't know what's been going on the last couple of games. I mean, he had one that went off the side of the backboard tonight, and that's not characteristic second half. Yeah, that is not him at all. So if we get him back on track, we're going to be in good shape.
Commercial Announcer
All right, we're going to take a break and we will come back for a final segment here. Kind of wrap up the night, wrap up our trip. We are not. We are off on Monday because we're flying back. Monday will be Billy who you got in with you Monday. It's me and Myron hosting the show.
Sports Analyst
Oh, you and Myron.
Commercial Announcer
Somebody's got to stay back Monday with Myron and Billy and then we will be back on Tuesday. We will take a break and be right back. This is the local toy dealers KSR post game show. Welcome back. Final segment is the local toy dealers KSR postgame show. By the way, in college football, just for the record, one of us played college football, the other four did not. Amongst the two of us, one person in the major conference games went 03. That would be the guy who won the Ray Guy award and one person went three and oh, that would be the person me that you made fun of on the drive and acted like I would not know what an out route was.
Max
Yeah, I mean you take Davos when he side and just tell Australians that they don't know what they're talking about. We don't want them on our team. I mean you and him are very, very similar. You know, love God, you know all those kind of things like you and.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah do love God and also yeah, we, we can't let these Australians take over our game.
Max
Dabo was just so cringy after the game. You guys missed it but oh my God, it was, it was hard to see and I'm so disappointed that he's made it but it makes it even better now when they lose by 50 in the first round.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah, they will they and they pro it be interesting. They probably won't get a bow. They'll probably be the team that has to play. Yes, I think they will even know. They won't look at that. Guy's excited. This is a very happy fan base right now.
Ryan
Yeah, a lot of these people like us came from Kentucky out here to watch the game and you win, you got to celebrate.
Commercial Announcer
And also back home it's 2:40 in the morning in Lexington, Kentucky and our phone lines are full. It's 240 and it probably.
Max
We've shouted out the witch. We've shouted out Mark Pope. We've shouted out the guy that stayed in the bathroom. We maybe didn't talk great about Danny who made the bad prediction. There's one person we actually need to ridicule above anyone else. Your pregame Johnny Rocker underrated player is just a curse.
Sports Analyst
I believe it might be.
Commercial Announcer
You're gonna have to do better with your Johnny Rocker.
Max
No, no, don't choose anyone. Just choose the other team now.
Drew
You know what, Johnny Rocker's even disappointed.
Sports Analyst
Guy chose Kerr in the Clemson game.
Commercial Announcer
He was Awful. If you pick him again. We're not. It's gonna be really bad for him.
Ryan
So please, he's got cancel the endorsement if you pick him again. So don't do that.
Commercial Announcer
All right, who's next?
Doug Gottlieb
Heather.
Commercial Announcer
Heather.
Drew
Go ahead.
Commercial Announcer
Heather. Hug.
Caller
Guys, I'm so excited that it's kind of giving me a headache because of just the excitement. But first of all, I think that was a dagon bad crappy technical that they caught on Garrison because we would have won in regulation had they not called that technical. And Gonzaga made the two free throws from it. So that was bad.
Commercial Announcer
And that technical at all. And then the guy from Gonzaga did the same thing two plays later. Like he. They gave him a technic again from where we are. We couldn't see, but apparently he just like yelled after.
Ryan
It would have to be something verbal because there was nothing that you could see that would cause a technical.
Commercial Announcer
They didn't even make an announcement. So I like, we were like, why are they shooting free throws?
Drew
The ref was out of position. Like, Garrison had his back to him.
Commercial Announcer
I have no idea. I have no idea what he did. From where we were, we couldn't really see.
Caller
You can see on the replay. It just showed him when he made it, he turned around just like all the other people when they make a basket and they turn around and, you know, just celebrate and, you know, and there was a KA guy right there and. And even Jimmy D was saying like, that was bad call. But anyway, I think that it's gonna hurt Cal like a hog bite when Hope wins SEC coach of the year or maybe even the whole, you know, NCAA coach of the year. And one more point, Liz. I think that they play with heart. They come out and they. They leave their hearts on the floor and that.
That's what wields them.
And I'm so proud of them.
Commercial Announcer
Agree with all that. I appreciate the call. Let me give you, when the game is over, a bunch of text messages come in. Let me give you some. Some. Some names of people that you may have heard of who had things to say.
Sports Analyst
All right, do it.
Commercial Announcer
Andy Katz. First of all, I ran into him again. He didn't ask me. He did not ask me this time about. But when it was over, he did say to me, man, you guys are fun. I'm going to be in New York in two weeks. This may be the most entertaining team.
Drew
To watch in college basketball.
Commercial Announcer
Rob Doster from field of 68, he text. This team is so much fun. I know you guys are loving this. Hell of a Win, man. Pope is the best. All right, Terry. Miners wrote an incredible comeback. Love watching Pope. That's a good one, right? And then finally, Jimmy Dykes, who is calling the game.
Sports Analyst
Yes.
Commercial Announcer
That performance was worth your drive. What an incredible game.
Sports Analyst
Yeah. He said something to you before the game like, hey, man, I've been following you guys trip all the way out here. Hope you guys had a good time.
Commercial Announcer
Jimmy Dykes was following our trip. Does that make you happy?
Ryan
It does. I'm a big fan of Jimmy Dykes.
Commercial Announcer
And probably wondering why we didn't take Jimmy's.
Ryan
Jimmy's. You took the words out of my mouth.
Commercial Announcer
No, we all had the same joke.
Ryan
We're gonna take. We're gonna take it back tomorrow or whatever. We go by whatever day it is. I'm so confused on what day it is at this point. Yeah, it was good to meet Jimmy.
Max
I got a text from Andy Beshear saying, tell Andy Katz to stop messaging me. I'll be fine. It's all right. We're doing the best we can. Just say, thank you, Andy.
Commercial Announcer
Listen, you can't be doing that. Who's up next?
Drew
Luke.
Commercial Announcer
Luke. What's up, Luke?
Caller
Ah, guys, I am so fired up. It is 2:42 here on the east coast, and I can't sleep because it was such a badass win from a badass team with a badass coach, and I'm.
Commercial Announcer
This is.
Caller
It was amazing. Absolutely incredible. Apparently. I don't know if you guys mentioned it or not. According to Corey Price, it was the biggest come from or biggest halftime deficit come from behind victory in Kentucky basketball history.
Commercial Announcer
Tied for that on a neutral court. I think he meant on a neutral court, because I mean LSU game. That was. I think he meant on a neutral court, and he just left that out.
Caller
Okay, okay, fair enough. But by the way, Jimmy Dykes was not criticizing that technical. He said, and I quote, because all. All Brandon Garrison did was turn around and say, and won, because, you know, he got fouled and scored. Jimmy Dyke said, and I quote, he got teed up because we got to get that foolishness out of college basketball. Screw you, Jimmy Dyke. You suck.
Commercial Announcer
Get out of here.
Caller
You're a nice guy, and you care about and you care about college basketball, but the Boomer energy on that is ridiculous. Regardless, Pope is dope, and we run college basketball. The rest of y'all just exist in it. And the only reason you get to play is because we got to have somebody's ass to kick. Go, Big blue, baby.
Commercial Announcer
Wow.
Ryan
You can text that back to Jimmy Dykes.
Commercial Announcer
I was texting. Yeah, I like Jimmy Dykes. To Jimmy Dykes. He's a good guy. But there is. He sometimes has a little boomer energy, I think that's fair to say.
Ryan
Well, he's a boomer.
Commercial Announcer
That is a. That is a call tonight. He is. I. I will say this. People were complaining about Jimmy a lot. I don't know what he was doing during the game, but I was getting a lot of people very upset about. I like Jimmy Dykes. Actually, that what I like about when Jimmy Dykes does our games is he knows our team. He knows Kentucky. I hate when we get an announcer who doesn't know anything and then just says like, you know, the same, like, gibberish.
Max
I wish I could hear the commentary because unfortunately at the bar, I was sitting at Oregon, Penn State, and I was sitting right next to like 25 Oregon fans, but there was enough Kentucky fans in there that they were clapping and cheering and all that kind of stuff. And Oregon had at one stage a two yard run. And the Kentucky fans went nuts because they hit a big three. And the Oregon guy goes, there's a two yard run. Why do we care about that? Like, let's relax. It's like, no, dude, Kentucky. This is the Kentucky.
Drew
I'm confused by this. There were people at the bar here that weren't at the game. I feel like if you made it this far, he's understood. Exception.
Commercial Announcer
Who would come all the way out and not go to a game.
Ryan
We drove you over 2,000 miles to watch it on TV, which you could have done from home.
Commercial Announcer
Me.
Max
It was me. Everyone that loves ramen. And so Penetrator, I got to tell.
Sports Analyst
You, when we walked into this place, Shannon, I walked in, there were like five people. Yeah, they were all watching the UFC fight.
Doug Gottlieb
And that's what told him.
Sports Analyst
I said, look, can we do our radio show? There's gonna be a lot of people come in. I don't think he understood how many people were really.
Commercial Announcer
By the way, there's two bars who owe us a cut. I'm just saying the pregame and post game, these people are at least been nice about it.
Drew
If you watch my rapid reaction. I'm trying to talk about the game with fans walking out and the whole video is just them going, where's Ryan? Where's the post game?
Commercial Announcer
I'm trying to get people on topic.
Drew
And it's just like, what bar are we going too?
Commercial Announcer
Yeah, who's up next? Janie. Janie, what's up?
Caller
Hey. Just want to say how Excited? I am as a lifelong fan and representing Big Blue Nation tonight. I just wanted to comment on when you guys were talking earlier about this excitement and just the feel of, you know, being excited about the Cats this year and what we have to look forward to. You know, not that we aren't always excited, but just saying that I really am. I'm really looking forward to this season in general and excited that we are all looking forward to each and every game coming up. And want to make a comment about the players tonight. Of course. Jackson Robinson and Andrew Carr, I thought were clutch. And I think they said that they were 12 for 14 the combined 28 points in the second half. I mean, how awesome is that? But did anyone notice that Jackson Robinson never breaks a sweat? It seems like.
Commercial Announcer
He'S a cool customer. You're exactly right. Jamie, I can't hear you. I'm sorry, I. We can't hear you. But I did hear you say Jackson Robinson was a cool customer. So thank you very much, Janie. Appreciate it. Field of 68 just tweeted out Mark Pope has won more games. Shannon, in five weeks, trailing by 16 points at halftime than John Calipari did in 15 years.
Ryan
That is unbelievable. That's the stat of the night right there.
Commercial Announcer
1 and oh versus 06. That feels like a little while.
Ryan
I mean, look, the stats, the stat. He didn't make that up. I mean, it is what it is.
Commercial Announcer
What a random thing to tweet out. Whoever tweeted that out tweeted out 220 in the morning.
Ryan
You got to do a little digging for that, too, you know?
Drew
Wrong, though.
Commercial Announcer
All right, two more. Who's next?
Drew
Aaron.
Commercial Announcer
Aaron. What's up, Matt? How you doing today? It's good.
Caller
It's a good day for the Kentucky Wildcats. My guy. I'm not going to lie. At first time we hired Pope, I was a little skeptical. Skeptical I am no more. But much like the guy in the bathroom at 11 1:22pm today, I texted the group chat and I said I had to stop watching the game. I sat in front of my tv, head down, texting everybody that I knew about the game to keep me calm. So shout out to Baxter, Jared and Daniel. Shout out to the Kentucky Wildcats. And shout out to Mark. Folk, man.
Commercial Announcer
There you go.
Drew
Appreciate it.
Commercial Announcer
Let me also say I'm gonna give a shout out, Shannon, to Rich Barnhart. He made a higher than at the time, was completely unpopular, and it has ended up working out. You can shake your head, Max.
Max
I wasn't shaking my head, Mitch.
Ryan
No, he Did.
Commercial Announcer
I mean, sorry, he wasn't, but you can't. But seriously, I mean, that. It took guts to make that higher. And he defended it. You know, I've talked about that. I had a conversation with him the morning before the show, and he goes, matt, this will be the right call. And I was like, all right, if you say so. Well, it was.
Ryan
There were a lot of big names, a lot of big names for the candidate for coach here. And, you know, he kind of went outside the box with Mark Pope, you know, a guy who has never won an NCAA tournament game in his coaching career. And so far, it's still early. It's still early. So far it looks like a great hire.
Drew
I have another Mitch take, and I've seen this before, but I walked by Mitch tonight. He gets so intense in games. Oh, yeah, he's always been realize because you get. You get like press conference Mitch and media Mitch, and he's just a nice, wholesome guy. You catch him mid game.
Commercial Announcer
Oh, he gets into it, he'll yell at a ref, too.
Sports Analyst
Yells at the officials.
Commercial Announcer
He'll let a ref. He'll let a ref know what?
Sports Analyst
Absolutely.
Drew
Give him the hearing, some of that tonight. I mean, he's. He's passionate. He's into it. Not that he shouldn't be, but, I mean, I saw it firsthand.
Max
I've copped some Mitch feedback. Not always positive on the sideline sometimes when the team hasn't been.
Commercial Announcer
You and he. You and he. As to quote him about Cal, you don't trade Christmas cards.
Ryan
Well, he. And I don't either, but he did.
Max
He did, he tried.
Commercial Announcer
You don't even have.
Ryan
Well, why would you have a relationship with Mitch Barnhart? Yeah, don't you remember me asking about the checkerboards?
Commercial Announcer
Oh, he didn't like that. That was a long time ago.
Ryan
I mean, I'm just saying. I did challenge him. He didn't like being challenged.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah, well, now you see why I don't ask. Two more. Who's next?
Doug Gottlieb
I think it's one more.
Commercial Announcer
Oh, one more. Okay. Butler. Butler. Go ahead, Butler. Finish strong.
Caller
Heck, yes. And I will. Can you hear me?
Commercial Announcer
Gotcha.
Caller
All right.
Commercial Announcer
Awesome.
Caller
All right, first of all, shout out to Billy, because when I told him my name was Butler, he said, is your first name Lamont? And I said, no, I wish. I mean, who wouldn't want to be on the Kentucky team, right? But I have two serious questions for you, Matt. Okay, first of all. First of all, does the. I'm sorry. Three point thing that. That Pope did do you think he did that to get teams to force us on the outside so we can drive in?
Commercial Announcer
No, he wants to shoot threes. He wants this defense that teams are playing. I think he'd rather not see it. I mean this is like, this is how you play against Kentucky. But if they continue to be able to beat him with backdoor cuts, if Jackson Robinson steps up, teams will not be able to play like this. I mean, you know, we only scored 34 points in the first half, but it's also worth noting we scored 56 in the second half in overtime. So if we play like we did in the second half, teams will not be able to play us the way they did in the first half.
Caller
Right, but we were shooting like crazy in the first few games and now all the teams heard him say, yeah.
Commercial Announcer
They'Re extending their defense out. I don't think it was a Roper dope. I think he wants, okay, he wants to shoot threes. Okay. I mean he, you know, he wants to shoot threes. But teams I think correctly said, well, we're not going to let you beat us like that. And I think Western actually was probably the team that gave the best blueprint. And then Clemson utilized it. I agree with that. And then Gonzaga utilized it and now we kind of do the counter to their counter.
Caller
Okay, my second question is, it took me about 30 to 40 times dialing before I got in. Do you think nowadays it's harder to get into a sports talk show like your alls than it was back in the day? You say you call in yourself.
Commercial Announcer
Well, yeah, I mean, look, this is, I mean I, I'm not trying to pat our own backs here, but no, this is the most, you know, this for a non official, a non official UK show. I mean the official UK shows when K Wood hosted and all that, it was a massive thing. But for a non official UK show, this is the biggest one that's, that's, that's been around.
Caller
KSR in my opinion is the biggest show there is because I've been calling in since before who all even existed.
Commercial Announcer
It's hard. You're exactly right. Yeah, it's harder. Now I appreciate the call. Especially after a big win like this, it's harder.
Max
Hey, it's good I to get back to us really quickly with the offense that he plays. Just to answer that question. If you go watch Golden State at their best when they were shooting every three possible, a lot of their points come from backdoor cuts.
Commercial Announcer
They do.
Max
Draymond Green would be up the top just Dish and backdoor cuts. Clay Thompson. The amount of backdoor cuts, that's what we're gonna get. And we got more in the.
Commercial Announcer
We got more of them. That's exactly right.
Drew
There was a play that we didn't get rewarded for. Amari Williams. I know he can be a little turnover thrown. He made a nasty pass to a back Jackson. Robinson missed the layup. That's right.
Commercial Announcer
You're right.
Drew
It was like David Copper.
Commercial Announcer
That was a great pass. Yeah. I mean, he's a good passer.
Drew
It's like witchcraft as we.
Commercial Announcer
He's a good practice. He should never dribble. But. But he is a. He is a good pass.
Drew
Max said on pregame, get him the ball. And I know people are frustrated with him. As long as he's not dribbling.
Commercial Announcer
I totally agree. Just don't dribble. And he's good at the little handoffs when guys come around.
Drew
He might hit those free throws tonight.
Commercial Announcer
He did hit those free throws. Those were big free throws. Those are big.
Drew
All of us were.
Commercial Announcer
Because he missed Carr for what would have been a layup. And then he got fouled. And I was like, oh. And then he made the two free throws. Those were a bit. All right, so trip is over. First two. Two things. First of all, you guys had a blast. We do these. We do this once a year, sometimes twice in the summer. But I thought this one was a lot of fun. I hope you guys had it fun, too.
Sports Analyst
It was a lot of fun. You know, we got to do some cool things, go someplace we've never been before. And the fact that it ends on a great game like this, a great win, just makes it all worthwhile. So thank you. Thanks all the people that tuned in.
Drew
And listened to having been the one that's done more of these than anyone with you. This was the most driving, but we maximized our. Our non driving opportunity.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah.
Drew
So it was fun the whole way.
Ryan
It was a lot of fun. I'm trying to remember, like, what was my favorite part. Maybe ask me Tuesday when I have a chance to think. Yeah, last night was a lot of fun.
Commercial Announcer
Karaoke.
Ryan
We'll talk about that next week. But yeah, just a good way to put a bow on this trip with a great win. Good feel, good win tonight.
Commercial Announcer
And I wish Mario was on here. This was his first one. I'd like to get his take, but he is busy. Two sheets to the. How many sheets to the wind? Max, this is your second one. I appreciate you joining us. I hope you had fun.
Max
It was awesome. It really is. And like, honestly, like the thing that I just continue to marvel at is like, we'll go the middle of nowhere and there'll be a Kentucky fan that comes. We, we come to Seattle and there is a line out the door, round the street, six miles down the road of people trying to get in. I've got past trainers from Kentucky Football messaging me. Can you please sneak me in? I'm sorry that I couldn't but like, it's, it's unbelievable and it's awesome to be a part of and I just love every moment of it.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah. I mean, in Cincinnati for my ESPN show, we probably had 40 or 50 people come by. We had like so long ago. I know we had 10 people in Iowa City. Right? We had like seven or eight people in Kearney, Nebraska.
Sports Analyst
Kearney, Nebraska.
Commercial Announcer
We had, we had a couple of people in, in Vail, Colorado. Right? We had people in Salt Lake City. I'm missing one. Where else did. We went to Fort Collins. Fort Collins. We had, we, we had a restaurant and we, we had 50 people come watch the game at the restaurant. We had, you know, 10 people come by our house in Windsor, Colorado. We had 25, 30 people come to Salt Lake and then pre game and post game. I'm telling you, BBN is the best fan base, but hyper, specifically the KSR fans. You guys are the absolute best. And then we, you're the reason, you know, Ryan, people give him a hard time saying you're the reason we do this. Well, we really are. I mean and sometimes all it ever takes when I get frustrated with, with various parts of this job. All you got to do is one time go on the road and meet people out and you see why it's so awesome. And I'm glad everybody got this victory tonight. Enjoy it. We play Colgate on Wednesday. There will be a cleansing game. Hopefully we'll have a packed house in RUP Arena Wednesday night. We are going to be traveling back on Monday. I'm skipping my ESPN show tomorrow since it is three in the morning. We are traveling back on Monday. Billy and Myron will be on the show Monday and then we'll all be back Tuesday getting ready for the game on Wednesday. Ryan, Max, Shannon, Drew, Mario, wherever the heck you are. Billy in studio. We'll see you all later. Cats with a huge win over against Gonzaga. This has been the local Toyota dealers KSR post game show OC A T S K.

KSR Postgame UK MBB at Gonzaga – December 8, 2024
Hosted by Matt Jones and the KSR Crew from iHeartPodcasts and Sports Talk 790 (WKRD-AM)
In this episode of the KSR Postgame show, Matt Jones and the KSR crew delve into one of the most thrilling non-conference basketball games of the season: the Kentucky Wildcats (UK) versus the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Released on December 8, 2024, this episode captures the exhilarating postgame discussions following Kentucky's narrow 90-89 victory over a formidable Gonzaga team.
The matchup between Kentucky and Gonzaga was nothing short of a rollercoaster. Kentucky faced a significant challenge, trailing by as many as 18 points in the second half. However, showcasing resilience and strategic brilliance, Kentucky mounted a remarkable comeback to clinch the win in overtime. This victory marks only the second time in UK history under coach Mark Pope that the team has triumphed against top-10 opponents early in the season, following their win against Duke.
Kentucky entered the game with high expectations but started sluggishly. Gonzaga dominated the early stages, with standout performances from players like Nembard, who was described as "terrorizing" Kentucky's defense. The Wildcats struggled with offensive execution, allowing Gonzaga to build a substantial lead by halftime.
Quote:
Drew: "Mark Pope becomes only the second coach in UK history to win his first two games against top 10 opponents."
At halftime, Coach Mark Pope addressed the team's challenges, particularly their pressing defense and difficulties in the backcourt. He emphasized the need for strategic adjustments to counter Gonzaga's offensive schemes.
Quote:
Ryan: "I think that going zone in the second half was the big difference in the game."
Mark Pope's decision to implement a zone defense proved pivotal. This strategic shift disrupted Gonzaga's rhythm, limiting their scoring opportunities and setting the stage for Kentucky's resurgence.
Kentucky's transformation in the second half was remarkable. The implementation of the zone defense not only stifled Gonzaga's offense but also reinvigorated the Wildcats' playstyle. Key moments included clutch shots from Andrew Carr and timely assists from Jackson Robinson, who stepped up in the absence of injured teammates.
Quote:
Drew: "That is coaching right there. That is coaching."
Jackson Robinson emerged as a crucial player for Kentucky, especially after the departure of the starting point guard due to injury. His versatility on the court, demonstrated through mid-range jumpers and strategic passes, was instrumental in Kentucky's comeback.
Quote with Timestamp:
Ryan (05:10): "Jackson Robinson did an amazing job kind of in that point guard. He basically played it the last 10 minutes of the game."
Andrew Carr showcased his prowess by delivering clutch performances, including game-tying shots and decisive plays in overtime. His ability to remain calm under pressure was a significant factor in Kentucky securing the narrow victory.
Quote with Timestamp:
Drew (07:12): "He was the dude. Andrew Carr played great too."
Kirk Kreesa: Suffered a foot/ankle injury late in the game, impacting Kentucky's defensive capabilities.
Quote:
Ryan (09:59): "Yeah, he did play a great game."
Lamont Butler: Absence due to injury was felt, but his teammates stepped up to fill the void.
Coach Mark Pope's halftime adjustments were lauded by the hosts as exemplary coaching. By shifting to a zone defense, Pope not only countered Gonzaga's strengths but also revitalized his team's offensive strategies.
Quote:
Drew (06:00): "Mark Pope. That's how you coach. Like, that's coaching right there."
The crew compared Pope's strategic acumen to legendary coach Adolph Rupp, highlighting the historical significance of Kentucky's early-season victories against top-tier opponents.
The postgame atmosphere at the Atlas Sports Bar was electric, with fans celebrating the hard-fought victory. Hosts Shannon, Ryan, Max, Drew, and Mario shared anecdotes from the night, emphasizing the camaraderie and unifying spirit among Kentucky fans.
Quote:
Commercial Announcer: "They literally, all the people just gathered around the Kentucky bench just to say cheers and just hug strangers. Like, I just think that's awesome."
Shout-outs were given to enthusiasts like "the witch" who contributed to the team's luck, adding a lighthearted and communal feel to the discussion.
Quote:
Max (36:27): "And I suggest you go there. Whatever luck you need. Go there, get the candle, get the sage, have a bath with your friends."
Kentucky's victory over Gonzaga is a testament to the team's resilience, strategic adjustments, and the effective leadership of Coach Mark Pope. This win not only boosts Kentucky's standing early in the season but also sets a promising tone for their upcoming games. The hosts expressed optimism and excitement for the Wildcats' future, highlighting the potential for more remarkable performances as the season progresses.

Drew (63:02): "It was a lot of fun... And the fact it ends on a great game like this, a great win, just makes it all worthwhile."
