Kentucky takes a pretty terrible loss at home 89 to 79 against John Calipari and Arkansas on their return trip to Rupp Arena. We'll open up the phones 859-280-2287 I'm sure a lot of you, I'm sure a lot of people are actually probably sitting this one out because they don't want to think about it. But a lot of you are listening and have thoughts. I'm sure. You know, look, what can you say? This is an. I think this is a really tough loss for really more for the fans than for this particular season or hope. I really just think its fans really wanted this one a lot and they don't get it. And in a year when we got huge wins over Duke, Gonzaga, Louisville, Florida, Tennessee, I mean, pretty much the list of the teams you would want to beat, if Kentucky fans were honest, they probably would have said this is the one they wanted the most. I mean, it would either be this or Louisville, but it's probably this. And considering the circumstances and you lose. And of those teams I just mentioned, this is probably the worst of the teams and they come in and they win and pretty much dominate the second half. I thought, first half, I thought both teams actually played really well. I didn't really. I mean, Arkansas hit a bunch of shots. I thought Kentucky played well, too. I mean, it was just one of those things. And if the game had stayed like that and we had lost, don't get me wrong, I'd still be disappointed. But you would have said, well, I mean, if they're going to shoot like that, what are you going to do? But in the second half, Arkansas played well again and Kentucky just kind of didn't answer the bell. And that was, that was disappointing. So let's talk just a second about. Let's just the night. All right. So the night, I thought the atmosphere in Lexington was better than any atmosphere that I can remember in Lexington in terms of leading up to the game, everything going into it, you know, the city was on fire, the restaurant was probably as busy as it's ever been. And then the atmosphere, I mean, the stadium was full, the arena was full 45 minutes before the game. People were on their feet 30 minutes before the game. The moment that he was going to walk out was going to be the biggest moment of the year. And then he came out and of course got booed. And there was a lot of, there were a lot of. There's a lot of commentary about that and a lot of sort of was that good? Was that bad? I will tell you, having been there and I think the people there would say there were a lot of people clapping. Okay, there were a lot of people clapping. It's just they were politely Clapping and then the booing is just louder. As to what percentage was doing, which I don't really know, to be honest with you. I think there were more boos than I thought there would be. But in the noise was clearly very loud. And then it was even more so when the announcements came. But then once the game started, I thought Kentucky handled it fine. They got up 1812. Pope, in my opinion, made a strategic mistake. We were up 1812, we were rolling and then he put the subs in and I, you know, I think the story of this game to me is that our, after the Butler injury, after the Cresa injury with Carr kind of hobbled. Our reserves are. It's just a huge step down and I wonder if Mark's just going to have to say, look, even if they're tired, those top five or six just got to go because it was a huge step down, especially offensively. When the reserves came in, I actually thought Colin Chandler played okay defense, but Brandon Garrison wasn't good. Perry made some turnovers. Colin Chandler offensively struggled. You know, I thought our top guys played well. Mari Williams was awesome. Jackson Robinson I thought was pretty good. Brea couldn't hit a shot. Almanor and away, fine. But you know, they just wanted it more. At the end of the day, Arkansas wanted it more. They shot, yes, they shot 52%. Yes, they made more threes than they've made all year. Yes, they scored the second most points they've done all year, but they also hustled more. They got the loose balls, they got the steals. They got out in transition. They closed out on shooters a half a step quicker than we did. And they wanted it more and they wanted to win that game for John, Cal, Peri and you know, Cal, for all the X and O criticism he's taken over the years from me and others, one thing he's never had a problem doing is getting his players to love him, getting his players to want to play hard for him. And those dudes, especially the guys that played here, they just did. They played as hard as you could and they all played probably their best games of their career. Wagner had a. Wagner had a poor first half, but was awesome in the second half. And ADU and Z were good the whole game. John L. Davis decides to get hot and we let it beat us. So it's a big disappointment. Now there are some more concerning things after the game. Pope, you couldn't tell if he thought Butler is done for the year. He said he'd probably give him one more go in A couple weeks. But, you know, we might have to sort of perceive this team as a team without Butler or Crease, which means really no point guard. And that I do think changes the trajectory of the team if that happens. I also think that what we saw from last year's BYU team, which is they could beat anybody, but they could lose to anybody. That's this Kentucky team. I mean, it wouldn't shock me if they go down and win at Ole Miss Tuesday night. Right? Like that's what they've done. But we also could lose any of the games left on our schedule, with the exception of maybe the one we play Saturday at. When South Carolina comes here, we. We just. This is a good team. I don't think it's a great team, but it can beat great teams. And tonight's loss stinks. It's going to hurt us on the seed line, but it also just hurts the morale of the fan base. And I think ultimately that's the thing. You know, I've been in Rupp arena for pretty much every big game since 2005 or whatever year. There have been some awesome ones. There have been some awesome environments, and we've won almost every game where the environment was awesome. But tonight was different. I mean, I'm not gonna say it was like more energetic, but it was so much more. There was just so much emotion in there. There was so much excitement, nervousness, happiness, worry, you know, cheering, booing. There was just. It was just. There was so much in there before the game. And to walk away with that loss, I mean, it just really stinks for people. And especially to walk away with Cal winning in some ways, with all the criticisms we've made, he answered them. He did make second half adjustments. He did stop shooting long twos, right? He did, I think, kind of out scheme Pope a little bit. Pope said he wished he had been more aggressive and more of a risk taker. We used to always say that about Cal, like, why can't he? And they played loose because they had nothing to lose. And the once a year over the last five years where we've seen John Calperi when he was at Kentucky and he was struggling, they would always go on the road and they would get one win that they had no business getting. A couple of times it was against Tennessee. Once I think it was Auburn, once it was Arkansas. Well, this year he got it against us and we give them a lifeline to maybe make the NCAA tournament. They still got a long way to go, but that's the kind of win that could get you into a first four game if they could win some more conference games. And it's a game that will sting for this fan base for quite some time. Do I think it changes the overall trajectory of the program? No. Do I think it changes the fact that a separation needed to happen? No. Do I think it really changes anything, big picture? No. But does it really sting and is it the worst loss of the season kind of no matter what happens the rest of the way? Yeah, for sure. For sure. And on a year where the vibes had been immaculate all year, to have this be the ending tonight with still a month and a half at least left of the year, just a tough one for Big Blue nation to take. I know there's a ton of Arkansas people listening because I see it on social media. You guys deserve that one. Like you deserved it. And Kentucky fans, myself included have taken, you know, there was trash talk both ways during the off season, but certainly taken some enjoyment out of our success and the difficulty they've had and they get it back. Some of it tonight. Still wouldn't trade places with them, but I certainly would like to have traded the result tonight with them. So I thought Kentucky fans were at their best tonight. They were at their most emotional tonight but they're also probably in their most sad era tonight because this was a, this is a tough one to take. 859-280-2287 Lots going on. Billy. There was a massive NBA trade. Luca for Anthony Davis. I can't. Yeah.
