Matt Jones
Hey, what's up guys? It's Levar Arrington here from up on Game. Wanted to talk to you about a serious issue.
Billy Rutledge
Hate.
Matt Jones
You know, something personal that I have experienced and witnessed and watched is how the hate in our country is getting so out of control. It's at an all time high and people are facing way too much hate. A lot of people don't think it's a problem, but I do. I can recall growing up being in high school. One of my high school teammates, good dude too, just happened to wear a shirt that was a derogatory shirt towards my racial group. It depicted Malcolm X moments after he was assassinated and it just made me feel really, really sad. It made me feel upset and so many other emotions. And it's really because we're supposed to be a team but it's going to take all of us to stop that sort of hate. As I mentioned, we are a team in this country. So let's take a break from hate so our team can regroup and regain our momentum. We need to take a time out Against Hate. Visit standuptoallhate.org to help and join me in calling for a time out against hate by following at what's up with hate or posting the blue square emoji. Welcome everyone. It is the local Toyota dealers. KSR post game show. The Cats win a relatively sluggish effort tonight over Colgate 78, 67 in Rupp Arena. And now get ready for the big rivalry game next Saturday against Louisville. You can give us a shout. Love to hear from you. It's one of these people sometimes say to me, Matt, what are the, what are the hardest shows to do? And the, there's like two different kinds. It's usually, you know, if they lose on a Tuesday night on the road at like Ole Miss, a late game, people go to bed. We have a game like that this year at Oklahoma and then December games against bad teams. So this is a good time to get in. 859-280-2287 so I said on the pregame show that I expected this game to be closer than the 30 point spread, that I expected Colgate to slow Kentucky down. And I thought they did a lot of things really well. I mean Kentucky came out on a 17 nothing run to start the game and I'm sure like most people, the players sort of thought, well, we're good. And then they played like it for about the next 20 minutes. Colgate even got the lead by one point, which it's kind of amazing when you start 17. Nothing. But to Kentucky's credit, in about a minute and a half a game action, they went from down one to up 11. Jackson Robinson hitting two big threes that I thought were the most important shots of the game. Then Trent Noah getting a big one. Trent played good minutes off the bench tonight, getting real minutes and taking advantage. And then of course, all game, Kobe Brea, who went 5 for 8 from 3 and really was the most important player in the win for me, I mean, this game, we won't remember this game. I don't think it particularly matters. You're sandwiched between really three big games at Clemson, at Gonzaga, then Louisville Saturday. This is an easy game to forget. Honestly, most of the year I forgot this game was even happening. I would. I thought they were taking doing finals this week and there wasn't even a game. So I'm sure the players are like that too. Look, I mean, you just want a massive game against one of the best teams in the country on their court, and then you got the biggest rival next week. It's easy to overlook this, but what's odd is that they actually started 17. No. So it wasn't like they overlooked at the beginning. I just think they got complacent. I think you also see how this team really needs Lamont Butler. I mean, I know they we won against Gonzaga, but I think for this team to be good, you really need Lamont Butler in part because it frees up Jackson Robinson. He went 2 for 11 from 3. Now the two he hit were. But he needs to not have to create as much. I don't think that's really his role. Butler can do that. You know, the bench, with the bench really didn't have a great game. I mean, if you look at it right now, Kentucky's bench points total was nine. That's probably the lowest that it will be all season. Nine points off the bench. All the starters were in double figures. But you know, they need Lamont Butler back and with Kirk Creesa gone, I think it's going to be important for, for, you know, I don't think Travis Perry looks comfortable yet. I don't really think Colin Chandler looks comfortable yet. Trent Noah, maybe he's the guy, right? Maybe he's the guy to get some of those minutes. But whatever it is, you know, we've seen a pattern. Kentucky, by the way, has won the second half in every game this year they've played. They are what, 10 and oh, in second halves. But the first halves, you know, cats have got to be a little more on it because I think obviously Pope's become a king of halftime adjustments. But you know when you get an SEC play, there are going to be some games that they'll drop if they don't have better first halves. And hopefully tonight is a little bit of a wake up call. Ultimately, two basketball takeaways I had while watching it. Number one, I wish that. Well, three, actually number one, I wish Kobe Brayer would shoot more from three. I think I heard when they were doing the replays Jack Givens say this during the game. I'm all for a pump fake but man, you're like the best shooter in the country. Shoot. I wish he took eight threes. Watching the game I thought he could have taken 14 and honestly in part of the game we needed him to. So I kind of wish he would shoot more. It's almost too unselfish. Which gets me to the second point, which is I do think this team overpasses a little bit, especially down low. I love the passes on the perimeter and the way they go. They pass to get an open look. But I do think especially with away Brea, I don't think it happens so much with Robinson, but away and Brea especially like they get in the paint on a drive and then it's I appreciate the fact they're always looking for a lob, but sometimes I think they're giving up a good shot for a high risk, better shot that might not go in. I'd rather have if Kobe Brea has the lane for layup, I'd almost rather him take it than try to throw a contested lob to one of the bigs. It's a nitpicky thing, but I do think we overpass sometimes. And then third, I just thought Amari Williams played pretty good tonight. Dunk. It reminds me of when I was a kid. Larry used to always sort of when Jared Prickett played, he would say why doesn't he dunk? Because he would always sort of try to bunny a layup and he would miss it. I feel that way about Amare and into some extent Garrison, but really Amare more like dunk. You know, his touch is not as good as his power. I hope. I wish he would do that a little bit more. But again, Saturday is what matter. Kentucky and Louisville. Louisville struggled tonight. They only won by three at home against utep. They were down a lot of that game, but they'll give Kentucky a fight and I think Kentucky's going to have to play better than they did today to win. Pope says he Thinks he'll know if Lamont Butler is going to play Saturday based on how he feels tomorrow. Because I think they gave him like his first really major workout today. I hope he does. I think I feel really good about Kentucky's chances if he plays. But if he doesn't play, I think it could be a game. And you know, Louisville's had actually kind of a brutal schedule and they, you know, they play Kentucky. I think they still have to play North Carolina maybe right after Kentucky. When you consider Duke, Ole Miss, Tennessee, they've had a tough go of it. They need to win one of these if they're going to make the tournament, and I don't want us to be the one that they win. 859-28022 87 Cats. Not much of a night of college basketball outside of Kentucky. The NBA cup is going. Billy, do you like the NBA cup or have you followed it at all?
Caller
I'm watching it right now, but it's hard to watch. The courts are so bad.
Billy Rutledge
I hate.
Matt Jones
You hate the court.
Caller
I cannot stand. I don't know.
Matt Jones
But it like tells you something different is going on though, right?
Caller
It does. It does give that effect.
Matt Jones
But yeah, it is tough. Like. Like, I think the Rockets court, the ones that are really red or like bright yellow like Indiana's, those to me are the hardest ones to look at.
Caller
Yeah, I'm looking at the red one now. It's. I can't believe the players are able to.
Matt Jones
But I do like that. It does feel like for these games, the guys are into it a little bit more. The crowd in Houston here, I was watching during the post game is much more into it than a regular NBA crowd would be. So I guess that's good. But. Yeah. Do you remember who won last year?
Caller
The Lakers. Right.
Matt Jones
Okay, now here's the big question. Do you remember who they beat in the final game?
Caller
No.
Matt Jones
Come on, you got to take a guess. First of all, you know, Western Conference versus Eastern Conference team. Who did they play in the finals?
Caller
Was it like Cleveland?
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Caller
That's the shot in the dark. Who is it?
Matt Jones
Indiana. They beat Indiana and the finals.
Caller
Oh, yeah, I was. I remember that now. Haliburton.
Matt Jones
So now they've got what? Milwaukee, Atlanta and Oklahoma City. So those will be good games if they end up playing them. 859-280-2287. We'll take your calls. What do you think about the team, the game they inter. They released the UK football schedule for next year. We'll spend a lot of time on that tomorrow on the show. But for my belief that's it's about the hardest first seven games I remember Kentucky ever having in football that's got to make puts Mark Stoops in even more. I guess what more of a hot seat next year having to start with starts with Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee. Those are first five SEC games. That is going to be a difficult schedule. 859-280-2287 we will take a break. Take your calls. Cats win by 11. This is the local Toyota dealers KSR post game show. Welcome back. It is the local toy dealers KSR post game show. 859-280-2287 Text machine is 772-7745-2541 One person writes Matt, our family has decided to drop football season tickets next year and do baseball instead. I think you're going to still want to go to the football game. I mean that's a great home schedule next year, Billy, isn't it? You get Texas, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida all at home. I mean that's all when come on now. Well, I mean it's the schedule you want if you want to make a run right because you get the good teams at home. But if you're a team that's struggling, it's the worst schedule you can get because you get the weaker teams on the road. So like it all depends on how you look at it. There have been years that I would love for Kentucky to have had a schedule like they have next year but I'm not sure this year is the one. One person writes Matt, if we get Lamont Butler back, I think we're fine. But you can tell how much we miss them. Exactly right. You he is a huge loss, especially in initiating half court offense and in guarding the other team's point guard. I, you know, I honestly think we have, we have two good defenders in my opinion. Butler and away. And when you don't have Butler you put Away on their number one guy but then Jackson Robinson having to guard their number two and then you end up with like Brea who's not a very good defender. You know, it's you struggle against teams that can move on the perimeter without Butler. It will be very good to have him back. All right, who's up first?
Caller
Chuck.
Matt Jones
Chuck. Go ahead, Chuck. Matt, what's going on?
Billy Rutledge
I'm doing well. I, I went to the game today. A lifelong fan. I'm 19 years old, I'm a freshman in Alabama and I get a lot of hate Every day. I get a lot of hate for cheering for Kentucky every day.
Matt Jones
So you're a freshman at Alabama. Are you already out of school?
Billy Rutledge
Yes, sir.
Matt Jones
All right, so you're out of school, you're a freshman in Alabama, you cheer for Kentucky. You're not like one of these Kentucky basketball, Alabama football fans, right? That's like too easy of a lot.
Billy Rutledge
Oh, I know. I. Well, I'm from Kentucky. My family's from Laurel County. My grandma's from Harlem, just like Trent Noah. And I bleed blue until I die. And I get. I mean, I get a lot of hate for it. I went to the game today and, you know, I know you talk a lot on the show about the difference between the football fans and the basketball fans, and I got yelled out. Sorry. I got yelled at by two different groups of people today for standing up at the game and cheering on the team.
Matt Jones
All right, now what. Wait a minute, what was your first name again?
Billy Rutledge
It's Chuck.
Matt Jones
Okay, so, Chuck, I got this text message from a friend of mine's son. By the way, Billy, my friends now have sons that are in college. That's crazy to me. His name's Lawson and he's actually in college like you are. I think he goes to Miami. And he wrote me and said he.
Billy Rutledge
Went to the game with me today.
Matt Jones
Oh, he was with you? Okay, well that makes. Okay, well that makes it have a lot more sense. So you went with Lawson. Okay, so you all had this together. He wrote and said, my friend and I were at the game. I guess that's you. What a small world, Billy. Right? Isn't that a small world?
Caller
That's right.
Matt Jones
Yeah. He said, my friend and I were at the game. We ended up getting into an argument with some people for standing up during the game. I don't understand why people were telling us to sit down and stop cheering even though it's a one possession game. So you're big on. You should be able to stand and cheer. And I'm with you. I'm all for the standing up crowd. I. The only thing I don't like about Kentucky basketball fans is the lower level at Rupp arena telling people to sit down. This is a basketball game, it's not an opera. I'm on your side, Chuck, and I'm on Lawson's side.
Billy Rutledge
I agree. It was. They were so rude about it too. And you can tell that they've probably done this before. I've never. I've never experienced something like this at a boring event in my life.
Matt Jones
Well, tell them to Shut up. Well, be nice. I mean, don't yell at them, but say you're going to stand up.
Billy Rutledge
They were respectful the first time and the second time when they were really rude about it, I told them, I said, if you want to watch the game without people in front of you, you can watch it on TV or get better tickets.
Matt Jones
Oh, wow. All right, well, thank you, Chuck. I appreciate the call. Billy, where are you on that? Should you be able to stand up?
Caller
Yes, absolutely. This is a sporting event. This is not.
Matt Jones
The only thing I would say is be, be courteous. So like if you have somebody behind you who maybe for whatever reason has a health issue or can't stand, I do can try to consider that. But in general, especially in moments in the game where it's exciting, you should. I am for standing and I think the culture that's developed at Rupert over the years where you only stand occasionally and if people stand, you're mad. I don't like it now when I go to games and people stand in front. But I was at the Kentucky like Ole Miss football game and people stood the entire game. It's just what they did. And I'm not saying we have to stay in the entire game, but you can't get mad at 19 year old kids who are excited and are standing up. So what a coincidence that those two in that. Do you not think that's weird that the get the guy, the kid who wrote me and that went to the game with that kid that called. You don't think that's.
Caller
I'd say a lot of people that exit RUP arena after a game. Listen to the post game math.
Matt Jones
I know, but. But there's 20,000 people in there. You don't think it's random that the two people went together?
Caller
No, no, you're right. It's small world out there, Billy.
Matt Jones
You're not. You don't think that's nearly as cool as I did. All right, who's next?
Caller
Tanner?
Matt Jones
They don't even go to the same school. I think one of them goes anyway. All right, Tanner, go ahead.
Billy Rutledge
Hey, Matt, this is Tanner Dickerson from Sandy Hook, Kentucky.
Matt Jones
Sandy Hook, before you get my question here, that's. Is that. That's Rocky Atkins territory, right?
Billy Rutledge
That. That is.
Matt Jones
Everything in that town is named after Rod Key Atkins. All right, go ahead.
Billy Rutledge
You got it right there. Oh yeah. Or Keith, before I get my question here. Oh yeah. Keith Whitley too. Oh yeah. Before I get my question here, I kind of want to, I guess, kind of hit on a little couple other Things. So obviously with the point guard situation, as we all know right now, as you mentioned, with Butler being out with his injury and kind of just the shape that the point guard situation is right now. And then it's also allowed Robertson to kind of play out of position from what I've, you know, from what I've seen. But he did have a good game against Gonzaga, I believe. You know, in my opinion here, I think we're leaning on people maybe from the bench, particularly Travis Perry. I've seen the night you kind of see just kind of out of sort. He's more of a catch and shoot type of player and better coming off screen.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but they're not going to be running screens for Travis Perry. I mean, like, he's. He's not.
Billy Rutledge
Oh, yeah.
Matt Jones
I mean they're not going to be running offense for Travis Perry or those guys. They have to. I mean they have to do what they do. Can do to contribute and it may mean that they can't. Look, I don't. If this were a game against a team that really had a shot to beat us, the minutes would have been distributed very differently. They'd have probably played those. I mean, that's what we did against Gonzaga. We played the five starters most the second half in overtime. I mean, I. So those guys were getting a chance with Travis and Chandler and. No. And even Almanor and those guys, they were getting more run. But if this were against, you know, Alabama in this game, you just seen five guys out there most of the time.
Billy Rutledge
Yeah. Oh, absolutely, absolutely. All right. So now getting to my question here now though. So I've kind of tweeted at you here probably the past couple of weeks. I don't know if you've seen it or not, but it's in regards to Colin Porter at Liberty University. He's a point guard there. He's a junior this year. He's been there. He started all three years. He actually played at Ashland Blazer High School.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I remember that kid. Yeah.
Billy Rutledge
Oh, yeah. Okay. So what I've been. What I honestly think, you know, you know, you got Trenton, you got Noah and Perry, two Kentucky kids. Why not? Maybe next season going into the next.
Matt Jones
Well, they might. Depends on who they need. I mean, it depends on what their roster needs are. You know, I appreciate the call. You know, I don't. I. You. I think you can get another year out of away. So I think you gotta first determine will you get another year out of him. You got Garrison. You gotta see if all three of those guys that you just mentioned end up coming back. Then you've got four, you got three and will probably end up being four freshmen. So I mean, let's assume all of those people come now. You have nine guys, so you're gonna go get three transfers. But like, you got to be very careful who you get. You can't just get a kid cause he's from Kentucky. You got to get a kid that you think is going to contribute. And maybe he, he would, I don't know, but I think they would have to look at the roster. You know, my guess is next year in the portal, they'll go get a point guard to pair with with Jasper Johnson. But whether it's him or somebody else, I think will depend on how Pope sees, sees his system being run. Who's next?
Caller
Elliot.
Matt Jones
Elliot. Go ahead, Elliot. Hey, Matt.
Billy Rutledge
How's it going?
Matt Jones
Doing good.
Billy Rutledge
Good. Hey, I liked what I seen from Trent Noah tonight. Just his defense and hit that three which seemed to lock the crowd up. Do you think that he could become more like a Derrick Willis player?
Matt Jones
Well, I think before he's done, he's going to be really good. I don't think this year he's going to. I mean, he's going to play a lot. I just don't. I mean, I, you know, he played tonight. I think he'll get another chance to play some minutes against Brown and I think those are his chance. I mean, he certainly helped his cause tonight. But I mean, when Butler's back, you're going to have four or five guys ahead of him. And I think they've shown that this team does better when they go small rather than, excuse me, when. If he's going to play, I think it's with car at the five and him playing a small four. But I just don't think he'll. I don't think he'll play a lot. But before he's done at Kentucky, yes, I do think he can have like a Derek Willis type role. But do I think it'll happen this year? No, I don't.
Billy Rutledge
Absolutely. Thank you.
Matt Jones
Appreciate it. I mean, I, you know, and that's not a criticism. Look, I mean, you look at Chandler, Noah and Perry, all those guys, I think have a chance to be contributors, significant contributors at this school before they're done. I think Chandler has a chance to be a star. But you know, when I watch them, this is what I was thinking looking at Perry and Noah and Chandler today. Billy, if you look at the rest of our players and you look at them, you see the Difference in four years of college weight training.
Caller
Yeah.
Matt Jones
No, I'm serious.
Caller
No doubt. Yeah.
Matt Jones
Just go look at those dudes because those other guys are 22, 23 years old and Noah and Perry are like 18 and 19. That's a big difference. And sometimes we would see that at Kentucky. We'd play some of these guys when Cal was here and we'd have these little freshmen and we'd be playing against grown men. We're the grown men this year. And this, by the way, is the last year where you're going to have fifth year guys, a lot of them playing. So I don't think the gap will be as large in the years to come. Who's next?
Caller
Robbie.
Matt Jones
Robbie. Go ahead, Robbie.
Billy Rutledge
Hey, first time, long time.
Matt Jones
Matt. Who? What's up?
Billy Rutledge
Well, it's Williams. I'll be honest with you as I watch the game tonight, I think he's a little lazy. He doesn't block out. I saw a lot of times where you got other guys jumping on the, on the ball and really going after it.
Matt Jones
I wouldn't say lazy, but I will say I wouldn't say lazy, but I do know what you're talking about. I noticed this even in the Gonzaga game as well. Like if there's a loose ball, he does something that I see coaches complain about a lot. He bends down to get it, whereas the other guy like falls on the floor and gets it. You know what I mean? And usually the guy who does that is going to have a better chance. I wouldn't say he's, he's lazy. I don't think that's fair. But I would say that, you know, maybe sometimes he's at 85, 90% effort. I do think in big place he plays great defense, but he can get beaten sometimes with effort.
Billy Rutledge
Well, I think he gets caught ball watching like he's, he's standing there watching the ball go up, but he doesn't go after it. You know what I'm saying? I mean, giving that 100% effort to go for the ball. Make sense?
Matt Jones
No, I agree, I agree. And, and like I said, I appreciate the call. Sometimes I wish he went up, would go up and dunk and not just try to finesse it around the rim. He is, however, when he's, when he's locked in, he's a good shot blocker. He's. He's pretty good at pick and roll defense. He got better especially in that game the other night. He was bad at the first half. They were getting, they were torching them. But then in the second half he started, he started playing it better. I still think all these guys, you know, they did a pretty good job this year until tonight. And when you play these teams that shoot threes, like, get out on them, make them beat you off the dribble, we didn't do a great job of that tonight. And we have most of the year these, they lay way too far off, these guys. And I don't understand that because these dudes are not going to beat you at the rim, but. Who's next?
Caller
Jaden.
Matt Jones
Jaden. What's up, Jaden?
Billy Rutledge
Hey, Matt. I don't know how much you've been following NBA this year, but I've been looking at like. And they're only averaging for a game. And do they give like any concerns about their career?
Matt Jones
No, I don't. I mean, it's. It is. I've been surprised. Well, I've been surprised with both of them. Shepard and Dillingham, the minutes they've gotten. So they're two different situations. I think Reed's problem is he's on a team with five guards that are all pretty good and because of that he just can't get minutes. I don't want anyone to get hurt, but I think if someone were to get hurt, you'd start to see more minutes. But the Rockets have been healthy all year. I also think if I were, I'd like to see him playing instead of Van Fleet some. But. But Van Fleet's getting the minutes and look, the Rockets are good, so that's why he's not playing. He's just. He's got the burden to be on a good team. I think with Dillingham, his defense kills him. Like, I mean, when they put him in, he gets torched. And that was his problem here too. He couldn't really guard anybody. He'll be fine, but he might not play a lot this year because he's just. Defensively, he's a liability.
Billy Rutledge
Yeah, for sure.
Matt Jones
So, yeah, I appreciate the call. But on Reed especially, he's not played as much as I thought he would. But the problem is he's on a team that's good and has five guards, a couple of whom are having like the best years of their career. So he just, he got some bad luck with. With where he ended up. All right, we'll take a break. 859-280-2287 Cats with an 11 point win against the Colgate. What is Colgate's nickname?
Caller
Raiders.
Matt Jones
The Raiders. I don't know that I ever knew that actually Is Colgate named after the same Colgate that does the toothpaste?
Caller
Don't know, but I'm going to assume so.
Matt Jones
We should look that up during the break so that you can give us the history of this fine university that we played.
Caller
Okay.
Matt Jones
All right, we'll take a break and be right back. This is the local Toyota dealers KSR post game show. Welcome back. It is the local Toyota dealers KSR post game Show. All right, so I've been having people, Billy, for the last week or so writing me about one of our commercials, and I had not heard it until right then. Do you. Do you. Can you play the commercials?
Caller
Yeah.
Billy Rutledge
Yeah.
Caller
Do you want to hear.
Matt Jones
So this is the commercial. For those of you that you know are maybe listening on podcast, you don't get all the commercials. This is the commercial for Red State Barbecue. And I want you to just hear. I mean, you can hear me talking, but for those of you listening at home, I want you to listen into the background because I believe that Ryan Lemon may have made an appearance in one of my commercials. Let me see. Red State Barbecue products are now everywhere. Let me give you the latest select Kroger locations across Kentucky, southern Ohio, and southern Indiana. Same thing at Liquor Barn in Lexington, Danville and E Town. There is Jungle Gym in Fairfields and Cincinnati. Do you hear that? Is he just. Did he just decide to clear his throat in the middle of my commercial?
Caller
I had not heard that till a minute ago, Matt.
Matt Jones
And so for people who don't know, we tape these commercials, a lot of them after the show, and often I'll do mine, and then if Ryan has one, he'll do his and he will keep the headset on. And did he just decide to croak like a frog in the middle of my commercial?
Caller
I mean, he was sitting right next to you. He had to know you were doing.
Matt Jones
Did he not think that I was on? Like, I mean, play that one more time. Listen. Listen to his. His flim. Red State Barbecue products are now everywhere. Let me give you the latest select Kroger locations across Kentucky, southern Ohio and southern Indiana. Same thing at Liquor Barn in Lexington, Danville and E Town. There is Jungle Gym in Fairfields. Listen. He sounds like Marge Simpson sisters there. While I'm trying to do my ad, he needs to apologize to Red State Barbecue for that. What? What a gross.
Caller
Goes up there with the local taco spot. Nice favorites of all time, I think.
Matt Jones
Nice job, Brian. Did you look up Colgate?
Caller
I did. Let me give you a little history lesson. Colgate has actually had four different names throughout its college. In 1819, it was founded as the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York.
Matt Jones
That sounds like a college. That sounds like a Club.
Caller
In 1823, it was renamed to the Hamilton Theological and Literary Institution.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Caller
And then it was changed to Madison College, but the name was later changed to Colgate University due to a significant donation by James Colgate, the son of William Colgate, the founder of the company that made Colgate.
Matt Jones
See, I can't imagine doing that, Right? Like, I can't imagine. Just think about the ego. You have to. Have to give an amount of money and say it's one thing if you, like, endow the college, Right. So if it was the blank school of whatever and a thing. But if you went to a college and then you go, I'm going to give you money, but you have to change the name of the college to me. Can you imagine doing that?
Caller
Do you think that would be like.
Matt Jones
Me going to Transylvania and saying, all right, Transylvania, I'm going to give you $500 million, but it's now going to be called Matt Jones College? Like, can you imagine? Like, I just feel like the ego has to be so huge to do that.
Caller
Yeah, the ego's strong. So you think they come in with that stipulation that you get the money if you change the name?
Matt Jones
I. I can tell you for a fact that at a number, at least two schools I know of in doubt, like colleges or whatever, were named only if the name got on.
Caller
Wow.
Matt Jones
Now, sometimes they will force the name on it when the person doesn't want it. So I know UK for instance, that's one of the things I really like about Joe and Kelly Kraft is that actually they've given donations and things and have specifically said, don't put our names on it. And uk, I think, on the Kraft center specifically, like, told them we're doing it whether you want us to or not. But there are definitely people who do that. But the whole college is another level, right?
Caller
Yeah, no doubt.
Matt Jones
Transylvania, you're now Matt Jones, 500 miles. Yeah, I don't have to worry. That's not gonna happen. So. But all right, who's up next?
Caller
Bones is next.
Matt Jones
Bones. How are you, Bones?
Billy Rutledge
I'm good, man. I got a couple things, man. How good is it to get a Kentucky win on my birthday, man? 41 today.
Matt Jones
That's what I was hoping for. Bones, Happy birthday. You're 41 years old?
Billy Rutledge
Yes, sir. Thank you. And number two, is there any way we can get Seth Greenberg to Stop doing anything to deal with Kentucky. He is so in Cal's pocket. What he called the Arkansas game about how good they were when it was really Michigan failing. I can't stand it. And then tonight it was all Colgate and it wasn't Kentucky. And then number three. How great is it for us to get this experience now? It sucks not having Robinson and Kerr, but to be able to win in several different ways when most people thought it was only going to be the three that would carry us. We're getting better and better come March. I'd be scared to play us again.
Matt Jones
Yeah, well, I appreciate the call. Yeah. On Seth, I mean, I've always got along with Seth. He, he. He's become, you know, not the nicest to me because of Cal. But I will say it is clear when you listen to him doing Kentucky stuff, like, it is clear. He wants to kind of make sure, hey, Kentucky fans, Cal's still great, right? Like, he. It's very important to him to do that. I didn't. I don't think it's so much like building up the. I think he likes Mark Pope. But, you know, I think he sent a tweet today, didn't he, Billy? That was like, you Kentucky fans need to stop worrying about or whatever, you know. Let me tell you what never works, ever, is when announcers who are not part of Big Blue Nation tell us what to do. Billy, do they ever think that's going to work?
Caller
It never works.
Matt Jones
It's never worked. I've been doing this for 20 years. I've watched everyone, everyone from Pat40 to Jeff Goodman, you know, to Jay Williams to Michael Wilbon, to Seth Greenberg. We're not going to listen to any of you all. So I don't know why they feel the need to do that. Like our fans. Our fans don't even. They barely listen to me, Billy. They're certainly not going to listen to Seth Greenberg tell them how to feel.
Caller
I heard Tom Hart was on fire tonight.
Matt Jones
Tom Hart was great tonight, right? Mentioned the sage, you know, he mentioned inconsistencies and taking it to the next level. That was an old school. Tom's not done one of those in a while. He's. I think he knew we were playing Colgate. He brought it tonight. And if you're listening, Tom, salute. And you were in town. You didn't even call us. Come on, man. What's next?
Caller
Thomas?
Matt Jones
Thomas. Go ahead, Thomas.
Billy Rutledge
Hey, Colgate brought it tonight, but how about this going to be our crappiest game of the year. We're up by 17. We win by 11. I'm just telling you that's going to be our crappiest game of the year.
Matt Jones
That'll be our worst game. Well, I hope it's our worst game, sir. It's our worst game so far. Yeah. And we still won. And I actually thought, besides the ones telling Lawson and Chuck to sit down, I actually thought the crowd got into it at the right moment too.
Billy Rutledge
Since some props out there's a Union county native, Larry Johnson played 73, 74. Having a hard time right now health wise. They lost to ucla but decent prayers. But Larry Johnson was an Incredible guard for UK back in the day. 76, 77 and need some prayers. So.
Matt Jones
All right. I appreciate you saying that and prayers to Larry. Yes. A former Kentucky player. Prayers to that the family. Thank you very much. 8592802287 also, I'm not sure, I'm not sure the specifics but if you heard Tom at one point during the game also gave a shout out to Oscar Combs saying to feel better. Yeah, I don't know what the, what the details are on that, but you know, Oscar is a legend. I wouldn't have a career if it wasn't for Oscar. So prayers to him as well. I think hopefully he's doing. He's doing okay. Who's up next?
Caller
Hunter's next.
Matt Jones
Hunter. Go ahead, Hunter.
Billy Rutledge
Hey, Matt.
Matt Jones
Hey Billy.
Billy Rutledge
How you guys doing?
Matt Jones
Doing good.
Billy Rutledge
Yeah. I, you, you stole one of my points. I was going to mention the Red State commercial because I heard it going into the post game and I was so confused. I was like, what is that?
Matt Jones
I mean you had, you had to have guessed it was Ryan. Right? Like, I mean of all the p. It was fairly certain when you hear a sound like that it probably is going to trace back to Ryan.
Billy Rutledge
Yeah, it's another one of those inconsistent behaviors.
Matt Jones
It's exactly right. Those are the inconsistencies.
Billy Rutledge
Yeah, I just got a couple points. I just wanted to say I didn't really get the chance to. I was actually at the Salt Lake remote. I'm the one that you mentioned about the girlfriend. Just want to say thank you guys to come in the Salt Lake. It's awesome seeing you guys in person.
Matt Jones
Yes. Well, thank you. And thank you for bringing your girlfriend taking your Prestonsburg charm to, to the Utah ladies.
Billy Rutledge
I appreciate it. And then the other two things I, I noticed especially listening to this game I was listening to on the radio, I kept thinking back in my head, I hate talking about Cal. Especially like you know, he can go do his own thing. But I kept thinking in my head, this would have been his Evansville UNC Wilmington. The yearly loss like this would have been one of them, in my opinion.
Matt Jones
It could have been. I mean, I. You know, I actually think, you know, don't throw any tomatoes at me, but I actually think this is the kind of game that he usually did well against, because this would have been a game where I do think, like, athleticism could have overwhelmed this team. And we are really good. What I think is interesting about Mark Pope teams, at least this team, we're going to have some great athletes next year. But this team, because we don't have elite athletes, I think we actually are so different in these games than we used to be. Like, we're going to give teams problems, that they have more talent than us, but they're also going to be games like this one where, like, we're better, but we can't just simply overpower them with athleticism because we just don't have those guys. And then if you're cold, you get a situation like we had tonight. If we. If we shot well, I think we win this game by 25. But we didn't. And you know that the kind of teams that gave Cal a hard time are teams that ran very, like, complicated, systematic offense. And I just don't think Colgate would have been good enough to do that. So I actually disagree with you. I don't think he would have lost this game, but I also don't think he would have won the Gonzaga game. So.
Billy Rutledge
Yeah, that. Fair point. And then the last thing I'll leave with, and I'll hang up. I called back in the Bucknell Post game and I told you about the BYU doing that cruise for nil. I wanted to hear who you would want on that cruise and why, and I'll hang up and listen. Thank you, guys.
Matt Jones
Oh, yeah. If you were to do a UK cruise for Nile, I mean, you could get. You know, I mean, it depends on who you could get. The problem is we have, like, such huge stars that are part of uk. Like, you mean you. Are you gonna be able to get John Wall to get on a boat? Billy, I don't know if he's gonna do that. Right. Get on a cruise.
Caller
It's a commitment. It's like a week.
Matt Jones
There's a lot of people that would do it. I mean, you could get Mark. I'm sure Jack would. And. And. And Kyle Mason.
Caller
I'll do it.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I don't think you're going to be a big draw for the Anis cruise. I mean, I think you're one of the people like on a concert flyer. Oh, there'll be names that are smaller at the bottom.
Caller
I'm the one of the opening.
Matt Jones
One of those names. Yeah, they'll be, they'll have you. I don't have like, you know, I don't want to offend people by putting.
Caller
Them on, but I would praising it, really. Not offense.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, yeah, like John Wong I think would go on that. On that there. Right.
Caller
Come on now.
Matt Jones
I'm kidding you. John. John was in Seattle so I'm just, I'm giving him a hard time. Who's next?
Caller
Andrew.
Matt Jones
Andrew. Go ahead, Andrew.
Billy Rutledge
Hey, Matt, I just want to talk about Brandon Garrison. I really like Brandon Garrison, but I don't think it's their best interest offensively to play through him in the post for him to dribble 10 times and throw up a hook shot and back iron it off the rim. I was glad to see Trent Noah do well. Seth Greenberg and Jay Williams can go kick rock. Shout out John Fanta. Love that guy. God bless America. Thank you, Matt. Go Cats. Have a great night.
Matt Jones
Yeah, thank you. I, yeah, you know, you know my view, the less Garrison and Williams dribble, the better for me. I mean the, you know, the little hooks are okay, but I don't know, those guys to me are like they need to be one dribble, go to the back. The thing that bothers frustrates me about Garrison is he fades away on every shot. Like you're seven foot tall, man. You're an athlete. He's the best athlete on the team. Go into the, go into the defender, draw, foul. Use your strength. He's always fading away and he ends up short arming it a lot. He'll get, he'll get better at that though. I think he's going to be a great player next year. I really do. I think, I think he's got a chance to be really, really good next year. Who's next? Oh, sorry. We'll take a break. 859-280-2287. The warriors lead the Rockets 78, 77. Seven and a half minutes to go. The Emirates cup is exciting. We'll be right back. It's the local toy Dealers KSR Postgame show. Welcome back. It is the local toy dealers KSR Postgame Show. A lot of good questions coming in on. On the text machine, one person writes dick, Dave. This guy says Dick Baker. I think he means Dave Baker, don't you think? Yeah, probably combined Dick Gabriel and Dave Baker said Oscar fell around Thanksgiving and had shoulder surgery, so. I didn't know that, but yeah. Prayers to. Prayers to Oscar. Hopefully he will. He will recover well and we can see him in a game again soon. One person writes, matt, I would go on a cruise to see Billy. Um, as a matter of fact, I think Billy would be a huge draw on a cruise.
Caller
Sure would be.
Matt Jones
That's very nice.
Caller
Get me on the dance floor, a couple drinks.
Matt Jones
That gets to this question. One person writes, matt, of all the KSR guys, who do you think would get the most matches on a dating app? Well, I mean, all. All the guys. They all have women now, right? Like, all of you do.
Caller
Is that right? We're all cuffed up.
Matt Jones
You, Shannon, Ryan, Drew, and Mario.
Caller
That's right.
Matt Jones
Like, you guys are all.
Caller
You're the hopeless Roman romantic.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I don't know the answer to that. I would say Ryan would certainly have a profile that scared everybody off.
Caller
He'd be in his underwear or something.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he'd be. He'd do something stupid. And then I'm too picky. So I don't know. Maybe. Maybe Mario, he's of that age, right? So. All right, who's up next?
Caller
Casey is.
Matt Jones
Casey. Go ahead, Casey.
Billy Rutledge
Hey, Matt. How's it going?
Matt Jones
Doing good.
Billy Rutledge
So I'm gonna bring the chat down a little bit, but I feel like I need to do this tonight. UK lost a saint, Somebody very close to me. His name was Doug Hazelwood. He passed away today. And he would always post his old Doug, and he loved UK more than I love my next breath. And I. I'm not trying to bring it down.
Matt Jones
You're not bringing it down. Where. Where was he from? Where is Doug from?
Billy Rutledge
He was from Berea, Kentucky.
Matt Jones
Berea, Kentucky. When you say he would post, what would he. What would he post on?
Billy Rutledge
Well, I. I guess I misspoke when I said he post. He was an old school guy, if you could imagine. Joby Hall. Yeah, that's who. That's who he would put you in mind of.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Billy Rutledge
But he loved ksr.
Matt Jones
Oh.
Billy Rutledge
And he was his. He would always go by Old Doug.
Matt Jones
Okay, all right, I got you. So how old was he?
Billy Rutledge
He. I. I'm honestly not sure how old he was.
Matt Jones
But what did you do? They just live in your town? How do you know? How did you know him?
Billy Rutledge
No, no, he. He was. We. We were great friends.
Matt Jones
He was.
Billy Rutledge
He was like a grandfather to me and my daughter, who. You have a lot of Contact with my daughter is the one who trades T shirts with Ryan.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Billy Rutledge
My. My foster son is the one that goes to Western Kentucky, so if that makes the connection.
Matt Jones
Yeah, no, I know. Yeah, I know. You're talking about.
Billy Rutledge
Yeah. So he. He loved uk, but unfortunately, he passed today. And the. The fact that he passed on day that UK was playing a game is so funny and ironic. Well, I know he's watching now.
Matt Jones
Go ahead. Go ahead. You there?
Billy Rutledge
I'm here.
Matt Jones
Okay. Well, let me just say, first of all, that's very nice of you to honor. Honor your friend. That's very appropriate, and it sounds like he was a great guy, and I'll be praying for you and he and his family. But listen, I always love stories like that because to me, the names of the players, the names of the coaches, the names of the people that are on TV and on the radio, they change. But the common thread is the fan base. And I appreciate you honoring Doug here tonight. God bless you, man.
Billy Rutledge
Yep. Thank you very much.
Matt Jones
Thank you. 859280, 2287. Let's do four more, Billy, we'll go home. Who's next?
Caller
Ben is next.
Matt Jones
Ben. Go ahead, Ben.
Billy Rutledge
Yeah, I'm not really sure how to follow that caller.
Matt Jones
That's okay. Doug would just want you to talk about the game. Go ahead.
Billy Rutledge
Well, me and my girlfriend were there, and the crowd was electric. That's one of the best atmospheres I've been at for a non conference game. Anyway, that was just.
Matt Jones
That was. Yeah, Pope said that Pope actually gave the crowd a lot of credit for. For. For the. For the comeback.
Billy Rutledge
Yeah. And Mark Pope has done a amazing job with the. The university's basketball team especially. I mean, the staying back and signing autographs and things like that. I could tell it just made everybody's night. And I just wanted to get on here and give him especially some praise and also both of y'all, for making. Making a lot of effort to make the university better. I appreciate it.
Matt Jones
Well, thank you. And you're exactly right about Mark. Mark's brought the. Mark's brought the pride back, and he's given the program in some ways, back to the people. And I think that's why everybody's so appreciative. Appreciate. Appreciate the call. What. What, Billy, is wrong with Draymond Green?
Billy Rutledge
Did you see that?
Caller
Yeah, I did.
Matt Jones
I mean, that's. They got it through. That's like.
Billy Rutledge
I don't.
Matt Jones
I don't know what they. What. It's flagrant one, two, whatever. But, like, he's Tackled a guy. Come on, you can't do that.
Caller
I thought we addressed this with him.
Matt Jones
Like, he does something, like, every day. Like, plus, his beard is gray now. Like, he's. He's old now. I didn't realize that. I will say I'm going to be talking a lot of trash about Louisville over the next few days, but I got to give Pat Kelsey, their coach, some credit. Did you hear what he said tonight? No, what? He said he was asked by a reporter if it was emotionally draining having to play Duke in Kentucky in the same week while also playing a physical UTEP team. And he said, quote, no, I live a great life. I mean, we get a bunch of free sneakers, I wear sweatsuits to work, my kids are healthy, and my wife is hot. Wow.
Caller
What an answer.
Matt Jones
That's a good answer. Good perspective on life, too. Like, you got a good job, you know, so I like that. I wish. I wish I could dislike Pat Kelsey more. He seems like he's not a bad.
Caller
Oh, don't worry. It'll happen.
Matt Jones
Not a bad dude. Did they just cut? They called that a common foul. That's not true. That's not what. They didn't just call that a common foul, did they?
Caller
I didn't see the result.
Matt Jones
How could they call that a common foul? Come on. Wow. All right, well, who's next?
Caller
Butler is next.
Matt Jones
Butler, go ahead.
Billy Rutledge
Hey, Fellers. Billy. Sorry if you heard what was going on in my phone in the background. My phone's a moron phone. I was listening to you all while I was calling, and for whatever reason, it didn't stop that while I was calling in. So if you heard that, I apologize.
Caller
I did. Brother Matt.
Billy Rutledge
Second of all. Yeah, thank you. Second of all, man, I apologize to you. I didn't realize the other night when I called that I was the last caller for the Gonzaga post game show. Otherwise, I. I remember now that you said, butler, last call, bring it. And I.
Matt Jones
That's okay. Don't worry about it. You're fine. Don't worry. No, you don't need to apologize. You're good.
Billy Rutledge
Okay, so here's what I got. Thank you, by the way. So I work. I just got home from work. I work two jobs. I go in seven at one job, clock out 3:30, 3:40ish. Go to the other job, clock in at four, work till. Well, I just got home about 25 minutes ago. I have not watched the game yet.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Billy Rutledge
Should I watch the game?
Matt Jones
Ah, watch the first.
Billy Rutledge
I mean, I already know what's the first.
Matt Jones
Yeah, Watch the first. Watch the first few minutes. First eight minutes, then skip ahead and watch the second half. That's what I do. You don't need to watch the end of the first if you've had a long day. Watch the first seven or eight minutes because they did look good. And then watch when they make that little run in the second half. And I think you got it because a lot of the game was either them playing well and us playing bad or boring. So yeah, that's what I would do if I were you.
Billy Rutledge
Okay, well, prayer sending out to that guy and his family. My mother in law just passed away Thanksgiving week, so I know how that feels. But you know what? All that aside, cats are on the rise. Let's go, cats.
Matt Jones
Let's go.
Billy Rutledge
Bpn.
Matt Jones
That's right. All right, two more. Who's next?
Caller
Vic.
Matt Jones
Vic. Go ahead, Vic.
Billy Rutledge
Hey, Matt. I call also to apologize to you, Matt. I know I do. The radio station in Hillsboro, we did.
Matt Jones
Not do the tailgate there because we said it was a KSR curse. You had not won a game there and we still got beat. So it wasn't KS far's fault.
Billy Rutledge
It was. It was bad football.
Matt Jones
All right, well, next time we will break it next year we'll do it. We'll light a candle. I will. I do have one question. I mean, it was a nice win.
Billy Rutledge
By Kentucky, kind of what you expected. But this is kind of a football question.
Matt Jones
Is this a bad schedule for Mark.
Billy Rutledge
Stoops coming off a four and eight year where you could play well and start the year two and five and really kind of lose the entire fan base?
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, it's about as bad a schedule for Mark and I'll talk more about that tomorrow. I appreciate the call. I mean, Mark may have known, but if he watched that reveal, I'm not sure they could have gotten a worse order of games. You know, it gives him an opportunity if he can get a good win. That second game of the year against Ole Miss is big. And then you got Texas at home and there are chances to get a win that kind of wins the fan base back. But it is, it would be very Easy to go 2 and 5 to start the year and still make a bowl game. I mean, that's plausible. You could go 2 and 5 and still finish 6 and 6. But by the. If you start 2 and 5, you know how the fan base will be. So it is a. The schedule is not, not what they would have wanted. All right, one more. Who's next?
Caller
Joe.
Matt Jones
Joe, go ahead. Joe.
Billy Rutledge
Hey, Matt, a couple of things right quick before you get out of here. The one thing that I see that we need to improve on is staying on our line. And what I mean by that is when we're dribbling the ball, we are getting physical off of our, off of our destination and we cannot continue the path that we're trying to get through the basket or make a cut. So the blueprint looks to be to physical, physical up on us and press us out on the three point line away from that. And then when we try to drive, other than Lamont Butler, we don't have a lot of guys that can get to the rim, as you say, but we're getting physically pushed off of our destination. So.
Matt Jones
Totally agree, totally agree.
Billy Rutledge
With some backdoor cuts, shouldn't somebody.
Matt Jones
That's what they did against Gonzaga on that, that's what they did against Gonzaga in the second half. I mean, I, at halftime, I will tell you, at halftime in the Gonzaga game, I was a little, just kind of worried. Not so much about the game, I thought we were going to lose at that point, but more just about the season. Because I think everything you just said, I felt like, oh no, Gonzaga showed how to beat us and then they adjusted and the backdoor cuts worked. They started posting car up. Robinson kind of hit another level and it looked good. But no, that is going to be the blueprint we are going to get. We're going to get roughed up all year. There's only going to be a handful of teams, Alabama, you know, maybe just Alabama. There are going to be very few teams that don't play us like that. And so Tennessee will, Auburn will, Arkansas will, A and M, Ole Miss, like they're all going to do that. And we're going to have to rise to the occasion we did in the second half against Gonzaga and now we're going to have to continue because that is that we are going to see that all year long.
Billy Rutledge
Yeah. And the other thing is too, I appreciate the fact that everybody wants to see Travis Perry and Trent Noah come in, but just their physical appearance on the court, you can tell they're five years younger than our team. Just the way that they, they look like high school kids and which is.
Matt Jones
Why I want everybody to like just take a deep breath. Like if you, if you get a game like tonight where one of them gets in and is able to contribute, cheer them on. But it's, it's, it's really is. I think, I think I, for whatever reason noticed it tonight more than any other game. You just. All you got to do is go look at the build of even our guys like Robinson. Robinson just looks older, even though he's not necessarily big. He just looks like they are. Look at Andrew Carr and then look at Trent. No. And that's five years difference of age and I think that makes a massive difference. Yeah.
Billy Rutledge
Hey, you guys did a great job last week on your trip. Always enjoy. I'm down here in Alabama. I was at the Ole Miss when I called you during football season and I think you guys do an awesome job. So thanks, Matt. Appreciate you.
Matt Jones
Appreciate it. Thank you. Yeah, we're going to see that all year and we got to get used to it. I think that's why I think Tennessee will be the hardest matchup for us all year. And by the way, that's how Louisville is going to play us too Saturday. Louisville has a hard time scoring, but they're pretty physical defensively. So I think you're going to see a very similar game style Saturday from Pat Kelsey's group. Thank you all very much. Appreciate you staying up with us. I will see you in 10 hours. In the morning. This has been the local Toyota dealers KSR post game show.
