It is NFL Cover Zero. I am Matt Jones here and we are I guess our third week of restarting all things NFL and Drew Franklin. Matt Jones. Billy R Sports Drew, are you we're seven weeks away from the NFL season. Are you feeling it?

Definitely feeling it. As Billy pointed out last hall of Fame game sneaking up on us. I had a lot of fun drafting our fan bases last week with apologies to Arizona. Sorry. Don't take it personally. Yes, but it's helped getting in the in the mood for football, being around the corner.

[Matt Jones]

I heard some feedback on that. I think a lot of people felt like I get I gave too much respect at number one for the Pittsburgh Steelers and I don't think that was fair. I think they should have been number one. But people said that's ridiculous. And the Bengals fans especially were very upset.

[Drew Franklin]

Bengals. I guess the rivalry is.

[Matt Jones]

And they were like how can you make it be as if you know a national college basketball show made Louisville number one?

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah, we would have a problem with that as Kentucky fans. However Steelers on another level than the Bengals. So they can hush. Yeah, completely.

[Matt Jones]

There you go.

Where are your terrible towels? We didn't mention the towels. They have their own towels. It's another big part of their tradition.

But they're terrible.

I don't know if it would have been my number one, but I had three in mind to start the show, one of the three, so I had no problem with it.

Just about the Browns? People were saying we went way too high on the Browns. I think that's unfair. I mean, they got the dog pound again.

upset because for a team that doesn't win to have the passion that those fans still have, they're very deserving of that ranking.

Yes. And they're, you know, they're excited they might get LeBron again.

Did you hear. I heard a story on a podcast that LeBron, every time he's made a decision, he already knows where he's going, and he just decides weeks in advance the date it's going to be just so he can watch people squirm.

[Drew Franklin]

He seems like a big guy that likes the attention, big fan of himself. I absolutely believe LeBron knows you want

[Matt Jones]

that if you're him.

[Drew Franklin]

What's everybody talking about him?

But they've been doing it since he was a little kid. At some point. Is that enough, LeBron, you're good enough.

[Drew Franklin]

I think it's. There's a little bit of narcissism there and wants him to be talked about, because the moment he picks his team, we'll all move on to the next thing. Yeah, but he's still a headline in the off season.

[Matt Jones]

I guess so. Well, so we decided this week to do something a little different. Last week, we ranked fan bases. The next thing to rank is quarterbacks. If you were starting an NFL franchise, okay, and tomorrow you got to pick your quarterback, what is the order that you would draft the quarterbacks? Now, this is key now going forward. So not just this year, going forward. So obviously, age will be a consideration in this. You want to be good this year. You also, you know, have to decide how long do you want this person? So it Is kind of a. I am Drew Franklin. I'm Matt Jones. I'm Billy. Our sports. Who would I want for the future? You understand the prayer.

[Drew Franklin]

You understand. I think age is going to be a big key here.

[Matt Jones]

I think age is part of it. But I would say this. I think you make a mistake if you are too into age.

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah. You could be fired as GM if you don't win soon.

[Matt Jones]

That's exactly. That's exactly right. And sometimes you might be setting up the next guy.

[Drew Franklin]

Correct.

[Matt Jones]

So you balance all those factors. Now, when we did the fan base draft, I went first. So Drew, I'm gonna let you go first. If you could start a franchise tomorrow, who's your quarterback?

[Drew Franklin]

I didn't want to go first because there's. I think there's two people here and it's a frequent debate that we hear every year. But because one of them is a proven winner and has rings on his finger. I'm going with Patrick Mahomes here. A little bit of a dip last year.

[Matt Jones]

How many years do you think he has left?

[Billy (Billy R Sports)]

He's 29.

[Drew Franklin]

Still got a good three or four where I'm confident we're going to do some winning.

[Matt Jones]

Maybe more than that.

[Drew Franklin]

But I'm saying I feel great about the next three or four. Could he go even farther? So I'm going with Pat Mahomes one

[Matt Jones]

even over the young guys.

[Drew Franklin]

He's just won too many times. How many times in the big moment have we seen him make the play to win? Proven winner.

[Matt Jones]

I would actually argue that's a relatively controversial number one because of the age. But you also know that for how ever many years he plays there, he's not going to be bad.

[Drew Franklin]

And if I can win right away, I've bought myself a lot of time for the future.

[Matt Jones]

Yes. All right, so you're going Patrick Mahomes number one. Would you have gone there?

[Billy (Billy R Sports)]

I would not have. No.

[Matt Jones]

I don't think I would have either. I'm not going to tell you who I would have and see if it's available for me. But I. I don't think I would have gone number one. I think it's interesting though. But we'll take it. All right, Billy, I'm gonna let you go second.

I will go with another 29 year old quarterback. Give me Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills.

[Matt Jones]

All right, so you. But that's the same age as Mahomes.

[Billy (Billy R Sports)]

Correct.

[Matt Jones]

So why would you pick Allen over Mahomes if they're the same age?

[Billy (Billy R Sports)]

Well, Patrick Mahomes coming off an injury last year. And I think that Josh has a hunger about him for not winning a championship yet. So I think it's only a matter of time before Josh Allen's hosting up the Lombardi. And if I'm starting a franchise that's a guy that embodies what I want in an NFL player, I think those

[Drew Franklin]

two are on a tier by themselves. That's why I could have gone either way. And I went Mahomes. Because he's already done it.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah. I mean, they're the only two young guys that I think you know are going to be good. Relatively young. So you wouldn't want any of the second, third year guys.

[Billy (Billy R Sports)]

Not at one or two, I don't think.

[Matt Jones]

Okay. All right. Well, I would have probably taken Josh Allen first. The only worry about Josh Allen or

[Drew Franklin]

the hits he takes that and that he hadn't gotten there. He's had some great teams and still hadn't gotten over that hump.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah. I mean, Mahomes plays in a way where it feels like he avoids getting hit, whereas. Whereas Allen embraces the contact. He's going to have to stop doing that at some point, don't you think?

[Drew Franklin]

Oh, definitely. I mean, it's what makes him so good. I mean, he. When he's at his word, when you. When he's not turning it over, there's no one better than him. But the turnovers and still not having completely finished the job, I gave the slight nod to my homes.

[Matt Jones]

All right. For me, number three, I'm going to go Joe Burrow again. I think. I know he's good. How old is he?

[Billy (Billy R Sports)]

He is 28.

[Matt Jones]

All right. So I get one more year from him. You have health issues, injury concerns, but I feel like he's going to have. Of all these guys, he probably has the game that most allows you to get old. Right. Because he doesn't move a lot. So like Brady, he can sit in the pocket for the next decade. Now, he could get hurt, but I think his game translates to getting old better than anyone else.

[Drew Franklin]

And just as a passer. When healthy, he's probably better than the other two. Other two can do a little more with their legs, But Burrow, at 100% is on the tier with Allen and Mahomes. As far as best quarterbacks in the league, I think those three are separate. The problem with Burrow is it's hard to play a full season so far.

[Matt Jones]

All right, now you get to number four. I think this kind of. It becomes in the eye of what you want for the future. Do you want a young guy? Do you want a guy that's good now and then? Which young guy do you want? I think there's a lot of different ways you can go at number four. Where are you going?

[Drew Franklin]

There's two quarterbacks that I think should be next if we're looking only at next season. But one's very old and another one's been injured so I'm skipping those two. And I'm taking your boy. Drake May for the future had the highest QB rating last year and played in the super bowl in year three.

[Matt Jones]

Now are you worried though? He was awful. He was finished in the AFC championship and then he was awful in the Super Bowl.

[Drew Franklin]

But with that I remind myself it's year three. He's already been there and done it and can take another step forward. He's already taken those lumps. I think he was even number one in the league in completion percentage too. So they didn't feel like a great team because they had some low scoring games and they kept one of those games on the road. But I would trust him if I'm. If I'm picking quarterback for my franchise for the future.

[Matt Jones]

Is he the young quarterback you have the most confidence in for the future?

[Drew Franklin]

I think so. He's got some playmaking ability to beyond his passing numbers. So yeah, I like him. But as we've talked about many times, it's a great class. I like a lot of the other guys too. But the fact that in year three he's already been in the big game and led the. There were some great QB performances last year and he still managed to have the highest rating.

[Matt Jones]

I want him to stink.

[Drew Franklin]

Why? Because he's a Patriot?

[Matt Jones]

Yeah. I mean look at him.

[Drew Franklin]

It's boring. Well, he's got the same girlfriend since he was like four. He's not what you normally see.

[Matt Jones]

I worry. I worry about that.

[Drew Franklin]

It's not what we're used to seeing as a quarterback.

[Matt Jones]

He's got a great clip from high school on. I think it very rarely works. I think that's asking for a middle aged divorce. And if you start when you're four, then I'm worried that's coming in your 30s and I don't want my guy to be distracted, but they seem genuine. Dating the same guy. Woman since he was 4.

[Drew Franklin]

Maybe not 4, but middle school, high school. She bakes cookies. I mean they're a very wholesome couple to be an NFL star.

[Matt Jones]

So you think they're going to last?

[Drew Franklin]

I can't bet against them if they've made it this long.

[Matt Jones]

Do you know anyone in your life that has dated since high school and still married?

[Drew Franklin]

LeBron James is Mario chums in unique circumstance?

[Matt Jones]

I think there are. I think there are probably. I'm just going to leave it at that. I think there's probably some unique things in play. What about just in your regular life?

[Billy (Billy R Sports)]

Not off the top of my head. I mean, are you not a believer in young love? The high school?

[Matt Jones]

I'm asking you to think of one. And I mean now. My grandparents did, but that doesn't count.

[Drew Franklin]

No, I'm trying to think.

I know I can think of a couple that got divorced already, so.

[Matt Jones]

Exactly. Like you need to go see the world. You need to be like Odysseus going out into the world. Is that the person that was the star?

[Drew Franklin]

Sounds timely. I mean, it's a big pond out there.

[Matt Jones]

I'm not sure Homer wrote it. He was not the main guy.

[Drew Franklin]

Odysseus sounds good. It checks out. I have to see the movie to find out.

[Matt Jones]

I want to see that. It's supposed to be good.

[Drew Franklin]

Yeah, I'll probably.

I say that having not watched a movie in forever.

Oh, yeah. He was a good guy.

Husband of Penelope. Oh, they met in high school and he, like, laughed.

He, like, left because he was tired of her. Went around, you know, women were. Were singing to him. He went and fought wars. Then he came back. But he needed that time in between. And I'm not sure Drake Mays had that.

See, he went off. He was a big star at unc. Love held strong. He's had plenty of opportunities to take his status elsewhere, but he stuck with her.

[Matt Jones]

So we'll see.

And vice versa.

I like that pick. I probably wouldn't have taken him there, but I can see it. You know, you do think there will be durability a number of years. He's a guy who's playing style still will work in the future. So I don't hate it. I'll take it. What do you got, Billy? Eight.

But he'll still have a place in the league and still be good.

And as time goes on I wonder because he's still got some speed now but how long that lasts when he crosses the 30 mark. And being elusive like he is.

Like I wondered at Steve Young, had he not seen set out all those years, could he have played into his mid-30s? I think he did, but he also had like four years. He didn't play in the in his early career.

I'm actually going to surprise you all. I'm going Sam Darnold, was he 28? Wow. Too many people are thinking about the beginning of his career. It wasn't just last season. He had a great year with the Vikings. He's had back to back elite seasons, two straight years. So I'm going to say I'm getting probably three or four more out of him. I'm trusting the recent version of Sam Darnold. I'm blacking out all the jokes from when he was seeing ghosts and everyone made fun of him as a bust. He's turned it around completely and his last two years have been awesome. So I'm going to put faith in Darnold. Even though he's a little older than a lot of these young guys.

I mean, he's the same age though, as Mo Holmes and Jackson.

Man's got a ring on his finger right now.

Ring. He didn't take as many hits early in his career as those guys. It's a reasonable case. I mean, I think people still tend to not want to believe in him, but what more does he have to do?

Yeah, I mean, the last two years he's been as good as anyone, obviously with the championship, but even the Viking season, what they were like 14 and three. Yeah, I mean, he's been great. It's just that everyone picked on him so bad early. I think we kind of still hang on to that when he completely turned his career around.

And it's been reported this past week that the Colts expect him to be ready for training camp despite being limited in the off. Like I said earlier, Colts were 8 and 2. He was in the MVP discussion. Do you think the Colts and Daniel Jones can do that?

I think he's way too low. I mean, you know, he went 27th in our draft. If he's healthy, he's a top 20 quarterback. Question, of course, is if he's healthy,

does he have some insane contract? I think they took good care of him.

They gave him a contract extension recently.

[Drew Franklin]

Like a lot. I don't know. I remember the Danny Dimes from the Giants. It was a fun story.

He had a playoff. Dan. They went to the playoffs one year. Danny, he did.
