NFL Cover Zero with Matt Jones and Drew Franklin is a production of the NFL and iHeart podcast. It's another episode of NFL Cover Zero. Coming from Lexington, Kentucky, where we are in different spots because he's Drew Franklin. I'm Matt Jones. And Drew is hobbled. He has a back injury that has made it to where he can barely move. And so he called the nursing home and got them to put him in his chair so he could join us. Drew, are you all right? First of all, you've had to miss a couple days of radio and just. Is everything okay?
Drew Franklin
I'm getting by. I can tell you. It is not fun when that back spasm locks in. I haven't felt pain like that in forever, but I'm playing through it. It's just been a bad week of injuries across the NFL, me included. But I had to show up for the show.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, I. People who haven't had back pain, you and I have shared it for a long time. I mean, not, like, literally shared it, but we both have it. It's the worst. Like, I mean, well, I'm sure there are things that are worse, but when you get a certain kind of pain in your back, you can'. Especially if it's in your lower back, like, whatever you want to do, whether it's, you know, walk, just lay down, throw things at Billy, like, there's nothing you can do, and it's the worst.
Drew Franklin
There was a moment last night. I haven't been sleeping at night. I've just been staring at the ceiling. But I just thought, I wish I just had, like, a broken arm, because then it's just one arm. It's over here to the side. I still got this one. I can walk around, but I, like, physically cannot get up and move from one room to the other. I pretty much had to crawl just to get here. It's taken me down quite a bit.
Matt Jones
So are you. Did you do anything for it? Or are you at the age where, like, literally, you can sneeze and then you're not moving for two weeks?
Drew Franklin
We cannot point to one specific incident. So I think it's more of just getting old. They didn't have neither. Neither side had much to contribute to what actually caused it. He just said, it's part of. I turned 40 last year. It's just part of getting into my 40s.
Matt Jones
When I. When I went to the doctor with mine, you know, they did all these scans, and I was expecting to hear, like, oh, there's a swelling of your A6. And he just said, we see no structural damage. We see inflamed nerves, in part because of. What did they say? A spine that has been reduced by old age. And I was like, first of all, I don't like that diagnosis. I don't think you have to be angry when you. I don't think you have to demean me as you're giving me that diagnosis, old age. And secondly, you know, I feel like with the modern stuff of medicine, can we do something? But. But I was out for a couple of weeks and so now you have been too.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Having to deal with it too. I guess that's. He put it the. The medical way of telling you you're old. My guy just straight up say you're getting old, but I'm hoping to get through it, be on the other side tomorrow. As long as I can just walk around, I'm fine doing the rest. It's just a matter of literally standing up and moving. That has been an issue.
Matt Jones
He also said to me, I said, can you. Would it help if I did yoga and back stretching? And he was like, in your case, maybe, which is, you know, like, you may be so far gone that there's really nothing we can do. But. Well, I'm glad you're here and do have a lot of injuries to talk about. I mean, I guess probably still the biggest story in the NFL is Patrick Mahomes going down. He had ACL surgery. I think we've hit a very important point in the history of the NFL. It used to be when every athlete tore their ACL, they flew to Birmingham and ducked Dr. James Andrews, who is the only doctor whose name I know, outside of the ones I go to, he would do the surgery. Now I saw Mahomes, went to Dallas and went to somebody else. Is Dr. James Andrews now been surpassed and is he no longer the go to doctor?
Drew Franklin
Oh, wow. I didn't realize this twist in the. In the Mahomes injury. It does say a little bit about Dr. Andrews being on the hot seat.
Matt Jones
Because forever.
Drew Franklin
You see a guy go down and you just know they're taking him straight to Dr. Andrews.
Matt Jones
It's the only reason anybody ever went to Birmingham. And I have wondered for years, how did that guy end up at Birmingham? Has he ever considered moving? Has he ever thought that there might be a better place for him? But no, he's been surpassed. Kind of like Mahomes himself. Not had the greatest year ever. And so now he's been this guy in Dallas did the surgery. Apparently it was only an acl. A lot of the other ligaments were okay. So they expect to be back at the start of the year.
Drew Franklin
On Dr. Andrews, you reminded me they'd go to Birmingham. It says a lot about him that he's. He could go to New York, Louisiana, These big market cities where they'd be easier to access. No, he's like, I'm good enough. Y' all just come on down to Birmingham.
Matt Jones
You're gonna have to fly into Birmingham Regional Airport. You know, you're gonna. I remember when the WW, when I back in the 90s, the WWF, now WWE, they would do segments with Dr. Andrews and show him doing the surgery on the wrestlers. And I was like, maybe I don't want to be Stone Cold. Maybe I want to be Dr. Andrews. For as. As an adult, did you have.
Drew Franklin
Was that a path you considered the medical career? You know, you went. It took some brains to get into law school.
Matt Jones
I don't like blood, so that's. I think that's part of it. And then. This is going to sound like a brag, but it's just a fact. The only B I ever got in high school, college, or law school was in my first semester of chemistry at transy, and I got a B plus. And I've basically revolted against science since then because I would argue it's faulty if it. If it thought that I deserved a B plus.
Drew Franklin
This is like one of your I'm smarter than Internet moments for.
Matt Jones
I was angry at science. I was like, the chemistry does not recognize my. My talents. And basically whether I'd have been a good doctor or not is up for grabs. But you can thank Dr. Whatever his name was that gave me a B plus when I was a freshman.
Drew Franklin
Well, we're all glad. I'll speak for Billy, too. We're all glad it didn't turn out to your medical career because this is a lot more fun doing what you're doing.
Matt Jones
This is a lot more fun. Well, do you expect when he comes back that Mahomes rekindles a second run? Andy Reid says he's not going anywhere. There's people who think he wants to stay to pass Don Shula's win record. Do you think that there is a second act in the Mahomes store?
Drew Franklin
I do think there's a second act, but I think the Chiefs will look a lot different. You know, I don't expect Kelsey will be back for years. I think they've just built that team. Just considering. Oh, we have Pat Mahomes. He can do magic when we get down late in games, so it might change up the chief's overall plan and how we can just lean on Superman. But I still think that, you know, depending how that offense looks, you're. You're next year on down the road. How well it can be, but I think Mahomes still has a lot of elite football in him.
Matt Jones
I still, like, you're going to keep calling Pat like he's homes, and you're just going to keep calling Pat. I, that, that, that's totally fine to me. I think they will have a transition. I mean, I guess in some ways this was a transition year, but I think they have another one next year. I think they're going to have to build probably through the draft. A lot of it will depend on what Chris Jones does. I think if he comes back, you know, that's still. That's a huge part of your cap. I think you probably have a year where you ease into the next generation and then you try to kind of restart it. The thing is, with the NFL this season and how it's been so open, I don't think you go into next year thinking any of these teams are, like, impossible to catch. You know what I mean? I mean, like, are you going to sit at home and go, well, the Jaguars are the one seed. We could never be as good as the Jaguars. So I think for all these teams, their timeline moves faster based on how open the NFL has been this year.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I mean, we will see, still see how it plays out with the super bowl. But where we are right now, it's crazy how the league is upside down for what we thought it would be and how teams just took advantage of the opportunity like the Jags or Broncos, who we still are true believers in.
Matt Jones
Bonus, I believe now they won me over last week. Like, I'm. I'm going to have to act like Bo Nicks is not my, you know, cousin that's always in trouble that you wish would get a job. Like, I'm not. I'm going to have to act like he's a real quarterback. And part of it is because all these elite quarterbacks. I mean, Drew, think about it. If we started the year and I said to you, okay, who are the best quarterbacks? You would have said Mahomes not making the playoffs. You would have said Josh Allen, who will. Lamar Jackson, who has it doesn't even look like the same player. Joe Burrow, who seems to be having an existential, philosophical crisis in his life. Jalen hurts they're going to make it, maybe, but they're not playing great. Jaden Daniels not going to make it. Like, I do think this Bo Nix, you have to now say, moves into the conversation of a guy who could win a Super bowl and he's on a rookie contract, which Is I've talked about many times I think is huge.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I didn't. I don't know their preseason ratings but Bonix, Drake, May. I mean even your guy Caleb Wilson. There's been some guys that are playing way Wilson player. Sorry I was.
Matt Jones
You need some. My quarterback. You don't call Patrick Mahomes Jim. You do call him Pat, but you get his name right. Show Caleb Williams respect.
Drew Franklin
I even include Caleb Williams in that category. Even though he's a number one pick. We have a lot of point guard or quarterbacks that have. Why am I thinking basketball so much? A lot of quarterbacks.
Matt Jones
Remember I just said to you show some respect on his name. So just answer as from there. You went out for a minute. You, you got you. You.
Drew Franklin
I mean did it include the Caleb Wilson part?
Matt Jones
It included all of it. I just said show respect on Caleb Williams name. And then now you respond okay. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
So even with your boy Caleb Williams playing above expectations, you're going back to.
Matt Jones
You're going back to what you said before. Like we've had. The only thing I lost is when I said show respect on. Like we went through the whole thing where you got the name wrong and all that. And then I was like, so show Caleb Will. Bam.
Drew Franklin
All right, now I'm confused. I thought I would. Is it not where I just said Caleb Wilson? Do I not need to correct myself going.
Matt Jones
We kept going for a minute and then I said okay, you wouldn't call him Jim Mahomes. Show respect on his name.
Drew Franklin
But all the quarterbacks at the top of the list right now, even guys that I thought were past their prime. Dak Prescott, the way he's been playing. Matt Stafford, I mean those are names we clearly know. Those are MVPs. But just the what we thought we'd see this year, just the Mahomes. Allen la. The usuals. Some guys have stepped in and taken that spot this year very unexpectedly.
Matt Jones
Well I hope he gets healthy. The league is better with Patrick Mahomes. I still think that Patrick Mahomes. The NFL needs Patrick Mahomes. But. But they're not going to have him very at least for the rest of the year. Now Monday Night Football was. Was two nights ago the Steelers beat the Dolphins. You know the Steelers you could talk about. They still now lead the division. I actually don't think that's as interesting as on the losing things. One, two, after the game has he meets a player on the other side and they basically have their own podcast. They talk for a long time. He's Laughing, he's like, hey, man, what's up? And I'm just reenacting how I think the conversation went. He was like, yo, I don't know what he said, but the point is that he would. They looked very chummy. Right. And people were angry, saying, you just got beat. You shouldn't be so happy after the game. What do you think about that?
Drew Franklin
I've mostly seen the reaction to it. That's all been pretty negative. I. I guess it's a bad look. And I've even seen other people on podcasts and shows say that quarterbacks do this, but they'll go hide in the tunnel when they know it's a bad loss. So, yeah, overall, it's not a good look. His teammates have been upset about it. It's. It's not.
Matt Jones
As teammates are upset.
Drew Franklin
Is that coming out in their interviews? It seems like they are. And it's not the usual, let's just trade jerseys and get out of here. I mean, they were really piling it up over there. And he's laughing and, you know, they've been a hot team that still had maybe playoff potential. Very unlikely, but that completely eliminated them. And he's over there going over the top with being friendly as competitor with the guy he just played against.
Matt Jones
Yeah, see, I didn't know about his teammates. Cause I feel like I do sometimes take cues from the teammates. So, I mean, all these guys after games pal around a little bit. So they kind of know what the line is. And if his teammates are mad, that means they kind of don't think he's serious anyway. Now he got benched, not necessarily because specifically of that, but just because they wanted to play someone else. Quinn Ewers is going to play, which even though he only played in college last year, is a name I had forgotten. I think we mentioned him a few times at the start of the season and I still had already forgotten him. I don't so much care. I guess part of it is all these dudes this year who play like third, fourth, fifth round have been playing. So maybe they want to see if Quinn Ewers can do it. But if you're. And you're getting bench for Quinn Ewers, isn't there a part where you start to wonder, like, is the two a time over in Miami and he got.
Drew Franklin
Russell Wilson, he went from first to third. They even put Zach Wilson at two.
Matt Jones
Oh, they took him to third.
Drew Franklin
So they did.
Matt Jones
They got the Russell Wilson siding again.
Drew Franklin
We actually live in a world where we are one injury away From Zach Wilson playing quarterback in the NFL again. But same thing that happened to Russell. Russell, except two is on a different circumstance. That was kind of a one year off Russell deal. I mean they owe to a lot of money next year and I mean you're going to pay him that to be your third string quarterback or however that'll play out. But they did move him not just one spot back too, which sent a message.
Matt Jones
Well, Russell Wilson knows kind of like Tua in the sense that his teammates didn't seem to like him either. I mean, I wonder, I don't know, like I, I felt like two always seems so likable until a year ago. And I mean with all the injuries, everybody's been, I think rooted for him. I've rooted for him. I don't even know the guy. And now it just feels like the whole thing is completely different. If you lost a game though, let's say you played for Pittsburgh and I played for Miami and I hadn't seen you in a while. What is okay for us to do? Like I can't come up and like, you know, pinch your tummy, clearly. So like what is it that's okay for me to do?
Drew Franklin
I think most of it you do before you even play the game. I either see in warm ups, we talk. Heck, might even go to dinner the night before after the game. You got to keep it pretty brief, especially if you're on the losing end. You want to eat, you should feel it, especially as a quarterback and you should be showing that as a leader. But also you just don't want it to look different than it really is. And people play it up that you're over there just chumming it up. Even if it is just a quick hello. So I would try to be in and out. I would meet you for dinner the night before.
Matt Jones
I'd treat you before that, but good. But I probably.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, after. Especially on the losing end. Get out of there and get back to your life.
Matt Jones
We want, we want our players to seem sad even if they're not. We want you to seem sad. Billy, what do you think about the string of hair that's hanging out from Drew's side there? That like it has its own. Yeah, like it has its own like little life there on the. I guess it's your left side. There you go.
Billy
Ready for liftoff.
Matt Jones
Awesome though. I like it. Such good flow to be able to have his.
Billy
Yeah, I'm jealous.
Matt Jones
One had his own mind over there.
Drew Franklin
No, it looks good together.
Billy
I did want to say on Tua quickly, though, guys, that he just signed a four year, $212 million extension last year and now he's third string behind Zach Wilson.
Matt Jones
That's going to, I mean, they're going to take a huge cap hit just like Denver did for Russell Wilson. And I don't think there's really any. I don't know how you bring him back. If you get bench second string for Zach Wilson, I think you're just, you're going to have to say that's probably it. Which is amazing because again, there was a time three years ago where he was mentioned as maybe one of the five best quarterbacks in league and now not even going to be playing for his team. All right, so did you see, did.
Drew Franklin
You see Tyreek Hill's Instagram where he did the peace out today where he replied, I couldn't tell if it was negative for TUA or positive for two, but right after the news came out, he just did that peace sign meme almost. I don't know if he was like, get out of here, Tua, or maybe I'm getting out of here because I'm mad you to.
Business Software Advertiser
It is.
Matt Jones
It's hard to, it's hard to translate Tyreek to, to regular conversation. I never know. I never know what he means. But he's also, I mean, you know, he's been a non factor really, except for his, his first six or eight games in Miami, it's been a year and a half of being disappointed. All right, Billy, what are some other headlines?
Billy
Well, speaking of Miami, they take on Cincinnati this week and Cincinnati announced that Joe Burrow is going to start the final three games of the season despite being eliminated from the playoffs.
Matt Jones
And you know, I don't like that decision. Normally I would say play right. That's why you're there. Go ahead and play. But with him and his injuries and his injury history and his sort of, you know, emo phase, I feel like he's going in. It might be, it might be good for him to like sit at home, listen to Morrissey and maybe take the rest of this year off. I don't really see the reasoning, do you?
Drew Franklin
No. I know he, he wants to. He has that attitude of, I'm having fun playing football. I'm not just going to sit here and watch my teammates. I get that you need to be that way between the ears as a competitor, but, man, if he were to get hurt again in these last three games, that, that would just be unforgivable on Cincinnati for letting the play. I completely understand wanting him to sit out. I can't believe they're honestly let him.
Matt Jones
Go coming off one of his worst performances of his career. Right. I mean, they got shut out. And it wasn't just that they got shut out. He was bad. Like, he legitimately was bad. Him. It wasn't just the offensive line. It wasn't receivers dropping passes. He was bad. And I would look at that and say, especially on the heels of those interviews he did last week, this just may be a guy that we need to just let sit and bring back because he's clearly one of the best talents in the league. And. And it's not happening right now. So I. I'm surprised they're playing him. I would not if I were the Bengals. But, you know, as long as he doesn't get hurt, I guess it'll be fine. But if he gets hurt. If he gets hurt, it might be a clean sweep of everyone in Cincinnati. That might happen anyway. But if he gets hurt, then I think it definitely will.
Drew Franklin
I completely agree. And you know, you never want to see a guy get hurt, but I'm beyond pins and needles watching this because that will just be a horrible look for the Bengals if somewhere to happen to him with nothing left to play for.
Matt Jones
I love Joe Burrow. I like everything. I think he's fun. I think he's made Cincinnati much less of a joke. And I. I'm very pro Joe Burrow. But, you know, sometimes you see a friend and you go, hey, man, you need a couple weeks off. Like, you just. You know, sometimes people will do that. They'll come up to me and they'll go, man, how you feeling? And I. And even if I don't think anything's wrong, I start to go, well, I thought I was feeling good. Your tone makes me think I'm not feeling well. I feel like somebody needs to give a Joe Burrow a wellness check. How you feeling? Like, is everything good? You know that I think he needs one of those.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. And I think even his linemen recognized that too. With that press conference Burrow did last week, it even brought up Andrew Luck comparisons. Bear one around him's just like, Joe's not having fun right now. I mean, does he need to go? But Kings Island's not far away. Maybe give him a week long. Week long pass to Kings Island. He's back. Probably feeling great.
Matt Jones
A little cold to go to Kings island right now. I mean, I think it. I can't imagine the beast weather.
Drew Franklin
Comfy, but. But he just needs some Joe time is the point. Whether that's Kings island or somewhere else. He just needs to. He needs to get his shine back.
Matt Jones
Listen, I'm not saying I just want him to be happy because when he's out there playing well, being cocky, the locks are flowing. I just think it's a better, It's a better league.

Matt Jones
What's next?
Billy
Bill the Beast would not be good on Drew's back right now. Let me tell you. No.
Matt Jones
Do not ride a wooden roller coaster at Kings Island. For people who don't know that's a roller coaster, it's all wood. I think it's the fastest all wooden roller coaster in the world. Is it the same beast I rode 30 years ago, or have they updated it?
Billy
I think it's the same one they had Son of the Beast, but they shut that down since. So Beast still lives on same one.
Matt Jones
Part of me says the technology on roller coasters has not improved as much as it should. I'm not going to go off on a tangent, but when you think about the fact that they built the subway in New York in like, 1915 with the technology that they had at the time and that, like, the subway you take now is kind of the same one. You're like, can we not have updated this in a hundred years? I kind of feel the same way about the Beast. Like, that beast has existed for 40 years. Is there not a way to, I don't know, give me a massage while I take it or something? Like, there's got to be a way to make it a little more updated.
Drew Franklin
It's been breaking backs for decade and being all wood, you think like, termites would get it just everyday wear and tear?
Matt Jones
I've wondered about termites since I was a kid. I would look for the termites before I got on them.
Drew Franklin
How have they not already eaten the Beast in all this time?
Matt Jones
That thing?
Drew Franklin
I don't know why people think wooden roller coasters are fun. That will break your back.
Matt Jones
It is not. Well, I hate roller coasters in general, but I just. Big picture, I feel like America was Really way ahead of itself with technology. When we were doing subways and the Brooklyn Bridge, we haven't put another like this. It's the same Brooklyn Bridge. Like there should be a new one by now. All right, I'm done. Go ahead, Bill.
Billy
All right. We're getting closer to the holiday. So that means Saturday football. We've got two games on Saturday this week. The 9 and 5 Eagles take on the 4 and 10 Commanders. By the way, Jaden Daniels shut down. For the rest of the year, it will be Marcus Mariota. And then it's the Green Bay packers versus the Chicago Bears in a battle for the NFC North. And Caleb Williams looking for a little revenge after losing to the packers just a couple of weeks ago.
Matt Jones
Some bad luck for the NFL that the next three marquee weeks they've got the Commanders in big spots and not only have the Commanders not in the playoffs, it's a lot of Marcus Mariota. As someone who, who got to watch a lot of Marcus Mariota over the years with the Titans, are you excited for. I mean, aren't we getting as maybe too much Marcus Mariota in prime spots?
Drew Franklin
It's already been way too much. I mean, there was a moment earlier in the season where I didn't even know he was still in the NFL and he popped up when Jaden Daniels got hurt. It was cool seeing him fill in for a couple of weeks, but now he's played just as many games as Jaden Daniels, it seems. So, yes, it's too much Mariota. And I feel bad that the second year Jaden Daniels experiment there, we didn't really. We don't get to grade it. That was one of our talking points for the year. What will the sophomore season look like? And he's just been so injured. It's been a throwaway season for the Commanders.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it has. And you know, he was kind of. C.J. stroud had a very similar second year and he's kind of bounced back and had a pretty good third year. Be interesting to see what happens with him. The Eagles play the Commanders two out of the next three weeks. They're going to lose one of these games. Just wait and see. This. This will happen. This is a very Eagles thing. You look at those and you go, well, they should win both of these with Marcus Mar will find a way to lose one of these two. Now the Bears packers that night, you know, so two weeks ago we were previewing this when they played in Green Bay and I said it was one of the biggest games for the Bears in a long time that they didn't have to win, but that they needed to prove they belonged. And I think they did that right. They came down to the final play all right, two weeks later. Now this game's at home. If you win this game, you have a very good shot of winning the North. If you lose this game, you have a legitimate shot of not making the playoffs. So this is a huge game. I'm not going to say must win, but if you want to sort of completely move past the last 25 years of the Bears, like, forget how much we've lost, this is a game you win. And I think you exercise the demons if you win this one this Saturday night.
Drew Franklin
And I. I'm a neutral party here. I know you're. You get caught up. As a fan, I'm feeling good about the Bears finishing strong here. I mean, the packers just like lost Micah Parsons. I honestly think that takes them out of super bowl contention. And being in that top tier, that defense was playing so well with him getting to the quarterback. The. As you mentioned, they were in it and just. Caleb Williams just lofted that pass. Terrible interception there in the red zone to lose. I think they get redemption here.
Matt Jones
And I know they beaten the packers once out of the last, I think 15 attempts. So there is. There is a part that you just have to do it. It's like what you and I are Kentucky football fans and they've lost a Florida 27 straight years. They had to make it to where that stat didn't get brought up anymore. I think in the NFL equivalent, the Bears need to do. And then having just played them two weeks ago, prime time Saturday night, you know, this is big because there's a feast or famine thing. You win this game, you probably be the number two seed in the playoffs. You lose this game, you got a real chance to not be in the playoffs. It's a huge. It's huge.
Drew Franklin
That's why I think they get about being right there with that Williams interception that could have. That game should have gone to overtime in Green Bay. They know they can beat them. And since that happened, Green Bay's defense has one of the worst injuries any team can have in the league this year. I think they get that one. And then if I'm not mistaken, you in with Detroit. I think they get both of them.
Matt Jones
And The Bears take 49ers in between, too. They go to.
Drew Franklin
Well, I think they win both those division games.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And that Detroit game, if you lose, if Detroit wins their next two and you lose to Green Bay and San Francisco. That Detroit game is a win in your end. Like, whoever wins that game will make the playoffs. So I hope we don't get to that point, and I hope they get it. We'll see. I do like that that game's on Saturday night, and I'm already trying to figure out what I'm gonna wear for good luck. I'm thinking. I'm thinking mesh tank top.
Drew Franklin
Okay. Is it. Is it Bears themed or just a mesh tank top?
Matt Jones
No, I'm just thinking just in general.
Billy
This is every day.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Like, I feel like it'll be. I mean, I'm not going out with that, but I feel like I wear it my house. Kind of feel frisky, and that'll make the Bears play well. Billy, do you agree with that?
Billy
I'm all for it. Lucky. Socks, mesh tank tops. Whatever you need to do to get the team over the top. I mean, you got to be that fan.
Matt Jones
I don't have one, though. So if anybody knows where you can buy one.
Drew Franklin
If you get one and they win, you have to start wearing it every game.
Billy
You have a cowboy hat.
Matt Jones
Oh, you were gonna go mesh tank top and cowboy hat.
Drew Franklin
Oh, what do you say to the door? The pizza got the door.
Matt Jones
When you open the door wearing that howdy, cowboy? Is that what you're saying?
Drew Franklin
Do you have any. I know you have a hoodie for every team, but do you have any superst of when you're watching the Bears? We know Kentucky fans know you get in the shower.
Matt Jones
I've started wearing Bears paraphernalia during the games. I don't know why we do that when we don't go out. Like, why would you wear a Bears shirt in your house watching the Bears? But it makes me feel good. I mean, I'm going to be very nervous Saturday night. I don't hate the packers like other Bears fans do, but I want to see them make the playoffs because I may go to the playoff game if they make it, depending on where it is, and I'd like to see them make it. What's next, Bill?
Billy
The Broncos have a big opportunity this week. They take on the 10 and 4 Jacksonville Jaguars. But Denver can clinch the first round by with a win, a Chargers loss, a Patriots loss, and a Buffalo loss. But a stat to think about in the playoffs.
Matt Jones
That's too many things. I don't like when people say four things to me. I shouldn't hear how many things there are unless there are three or less things. Drew, when we start getting to. I mean you said the Patriots lost, Chargers loss, and Buffalo loss. Those are, like, the three best teams. So, yeah, if they all lost, that would make sense. But what are the chances of that?
Billy
Who knows? I mean, any given Sunday.
Drew Franklin
Any given Sunday.
Matt Jones
But.
Billy
But something to think about, though, is that this will be the first postseason without either Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, or Patrick Mahomes since 1998.
Matt Jones
Wow. That's an amazing stat. So that's 28 years without one of those three people being. Being in the. In the postseason.
Billy
Almost my entire life, as you say.
Drew Franklin
Billy, do you even remember football before that string?
Business Software Advertiser
Of course.
Billy
Not really listed. No, not really. I mean, Peyton throwing interceptions his rookie year on the Colts was, you know.
Matt Jones
Sort of look at football as eras. Right. So if you just go through my lifetime, I think of, like, my football life begins with the 85 bears, and then it is 49ers into early 90s cowboys, right into an area in the late 90s where it kind of gets muddy, and then it's basically Brady and Manning into Mahomes. And so in some ways, this is Drew. Like, if I sort of look at football as these, is this like five or six eras of my lifetime? It is weird to have one where it's now completely different.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, we got to saw the Brady to Mahomes transition right in front of us. We knew this was coming. So for my homes to finally be out, it is crazy to close the book like that. But who's the next. What's the next in line for Mahomes?
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, this is, I think, a Josh Allen year. We'll have to see.
Drew Franklin
As far as the book, it's kind of like an era, though.
Matt Jones
I mean, we'll see what it ends up being. I mean, the Broncos, Jaguars. Who would have ever imagined that you would get week 16 and that game would be one that is. Is so important. Is the game in Jacksonville or Denver? It is in.
Billy
Drum roll, please. Denver.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I'm going to take the Broncos again. I'm going to.
Billy
I mean, I'm sort of Denver -3.
Matt Jones
Sort of believing in Bo Nix, which I don't want to do, but I think I have to. Although, by the way, Trevor Lawrence has looked great these last few weeks. I don't think. I don't think you can act like he has.
Drew Franklin
Well, I was gonna say, if this were in Jacksonville, I might take the Jags, because I'm believing in them, too. It's amazing just looking at the playoff picture. I mean, we've been talking about Denver being one for a few weeks now, but now you have Jacksonville at 3. It's just two scenarios we never thought would be possible. We're looking right at them, and I'll pick Denver because it's in Denver, but I wouldn't write the Jackson off. They've gotten hot lately. Liam Cohen we're just going to keep moving them up those Coach of the.
Matt Jones

So you can check off any every name on your list and treat yourself to a holiday look that'll turn heads. Now you know where to go to make all that holiday magic. It's TJ Maxx, of course. It's shaping up to be a very magical holiday.
Matt Jones
What's next?
Billy
On the flip side, there are three teams that are 2 and 12 right now and tied for the first pick in the next NFL draft. The Giants, the Raiders, and the Titans, in that order, because they are separated by strength of schedule. And if you look at most mock drafts, they have Fernando Mendoza going as the first overall pick, the Heisman Trophy winner from Indiana.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, oddly though, Drew, I'm not sure that it matters a lot. Who, like, normally I would say lose so that you can get the first pick. But the Giants and the Titans do not need a quarterback and the Raiders do, but I don't think anyone else in the top five or six does. So I think they're going to get the first choice of quarterbacks anyway, so. And none of the quarterbacks I think are a slam dunk. So I think for all these teams, the sort of incentive to tank may not exist and it actually may be what you kind of want, which is people playing with the goal of winning the game. Do you agree with that?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, it's definitely not the quarterback classes that we've seen recently and who knows if Mendoza will pan out. He's even been somewhat of a surprise in college this year. Selfishly, for my Titans, I want a number one because we're definitely trading it and I just want to get as much as possible because we have even then trading up. Yeah, I mean, you would need a special player at one, and I don't know if this class has one.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I don't know that anyone's going to want it. I mean, you look at the teams with really bad records. Okay, so we mentioned those. The Titans and the Giants do not. Do the jets need a quarterback? Yeah, I guess so. I mean, you. There's somebody you would add. The Commanders have four wins. They do not need a quarterback. The Saints, I think they're going to end up rolling with Tyler Shuck now. I mean, he's been playing really well. Drew, wouldn't you just kind of roll with him?
Drew Franklin
I think so. With this QB class, just because deep at all.
Matt Jones
Bengals have four wins. They don't need a quarterback.
Billy
What did you say? Or did you say the Browns yet?
Matt Jones
I did not say the Browns. They have three wins, so the Browns probably do. So I guess you're sitting there and if you're the Raiders, as long as you stay ahead of the Browns and the Jets. But I don't know if there's anybody that would make one of those teams trade up. The Browns have already traded up a couple times, so I don't know. I feel like. I feel like it's not quite the prize it was before. And even at the position players, I don't think there's anybody. It's like, well, they're definitively the number one pick.
Drew Franklin
No Titans are looking at a linebacker from Ohio State, but I don't know how many people would try.
Matt Jones
I can't remember. That's the guy though that most people think is the best player.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Even the Oregon quarterbacks up there in the top 10. Maybe. Maybe you get into the marketing and the combine and the buzz and the talking and someone would bite and trade up for one of those guys. But I still wanted Titans to have number one back to back years, just. Just kind of like a trophy to have that you sucked the most.
Matt Jones
When you want them to continue to have the highest pick and nothing with it. Fair enough.
Drew Franklin
If you're going to be bad, like be the worst. You know what's being 29th in the league?
Matt Jones
One of these teams that we mentioned. This always happens though. They'll pull a big upset in the last week or two, one of those teams and you don't really know because you don't know who still cares. But inevitably in that last week or two, there's some 3, 4 win team that wins a big game and screws up the playoff seeds. Happens every single year.
Drew Franklin
It won't screw up the playoffs, but I'm watching my Titans to knock off the Chiefs this week. The Titans have been getting better and better and they're going to Gardner Minshew and have nothing to play.
Matt Jones
Yeah, no, I mean, that's a sneaky game.
Drew Franklin
That's a sneaky upset for me, but.
Matt Jones
I don't, I don't think that's a crazy upset. Like a bore. Trying to. I'm looking here trying to think of an example. I mean problem is all these like the Ravens, well, they're seven and seven. I don't know that there is a perfect one for this year. The commanders beating the Eagles would be an example of that though, right? That would be a game where. And I think that I think they got a really good shot of doing it. What's the commander's line? I think I'm betting it.
Billy
Let's see. The commanders this week are six and a half point dogs at home.
Matt Jones
That's low. I wanted it to be more than one possession. Well, if that gets to seven and a half, I'm betting the Commanders to cover that spread. What's next?
Billy
We've got two more notes until we get to our victory bundle and our picks. We have a big one on Monday night. It's the 49ers versus the Colts in Indianapolis where head coach Shane Steichen announced that Philip Rivers will be starting the game.
Matt Jones
So poor Philip Rivers. I don't know about poor, but he has to start with the Seattle defense and then he's going to be on Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli critiquing his old man moves. There's a great story. Week one played decently well, I think better than most people would have thought. But now people have a week of film on him. He's playing another good defense. He cannot move side to side. Like he cannot move side to side. I kind of feel like he's going to look look awful Saturday, Monday night. What about you?
Drew Franklin
Well, I think just coming back in the shape he was in and playing at all last week, he's probably walking around like I'm walking around my house, just holding my back up and leaning on walls as best I can. I as fun as it was and I'm excited to watch Monday night, I think we're headed for a big comedown moment playing the 49ers and even if they stick with them the rest of the year, I think they have the Texans next. They have like an insane run of defenses.
Matt Jones
They have like the hardest run imaginable finishing here like he couldn't have gotten a worse draw. I think if they lose this game, they might just say don't worry about it anymore because then they're not really in the playoff hunt. With that said, if they win, they remain in the playoff hunt. And that game against the Texans could be for the division. So I mean, like there's still something there if he can go and grab and grab it.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, they finished with Jags and Texans, so if they were to win, they could really rock the AFC south as it stands now, hurt both of those teams. But you mentioned the Manning cast. That'll be fun. Just because he played directly against those guys. They know how long they've been out of the league. They're going to be probably just as mesmerized. The fans at home watching Philip Rivers out there throwing it around.
Matt Jones
I love the story when he has time in the pocket and he can still put some zip on it. I still don't know if he can throw the deep pass. He only really threw two. One of them was intercepted, but that was the last play. He was trying to go for something, so we'll see what ends up happening this week. Foreign.

Finally, congratulations to Sean McVay and his wife. They welcomed their second child a day after clinching a playoff berth with the rams. Christian Alexander McVeigh is healthy and ready to go, and during his press conference he said, what a crazy week to be playing on a Thursday. It's the Rams at Seattle on Thursday night. He says he hasn't got a ton of sleep. Is this a motivation game? A reason why to bet Seattle? Because Sean McVeigh hasn't been able to sleep or think about football.
Matt Jones
First of all, I'm surprised you are now including baby announcements in the news. I will tell you a story since you're doing this, that my mom we were watching one of the games on Sunday and I want to say Maybe it was T.J. watt was saying this about someone. I'm not sure which player it was. And he said somebody made a sack, so it was a defensive lineman. And he said something like he's a new dad and everybody knows new dads play great football. And my mom, who had been very quiet for most of the day, goes, what does that mean? And I was like I don't know. She was like, new dads play great football. I'll tell you this. If a new dad plays great football, that means he's not doing his dad responsibilities. She was like, outraged. She talked about it for like 10 minutes. She was infuriated. So if Sean McVeigh is not getting sleep, then that means maybe he's being a good dad. But Drew, it might hurt the football team because he's. Dads that are doing their responsibility may not play great football.
Drew Franklin
They call it dad strength. I believe in it. You know, players step up. It's because they know they have someone to provide for and they have to keep getting that check they're playing.
Matt Jones
Is that a real saying that people say new dads play great football? I've never heard this before.
Drew Franklin
There have been players at the collegiate UK in the past that have had kids. You know, that's kind of rare in college we've said that had dad strength at the NFL though, you know, most of them are fathers, so it would be hard to point out.
Matt Jones
Billy, have you heard new dads play great?
Billy
I have heard this sentiment before, but I'm completely with your mom. Like, if you're doing it right, you're distracted. It's not going to be a normal game week. Plus a short week. Thursday night football. I think I'm hammering Seattle jfk.
Matt Jones
What said, show me a good golfer and I'll show you a man that's neglecting something in his life. And I always thought that was a great quote. And I think if you show me a dad that's 100% for football a few days after he had a kid, then chances are he tuned out on the. On the kid it. So if McVeigh's sleeping, I think that says a lot about his dad abilities. Did.
Drew Franklin
Did he even leave the facility this week or did he facetime, meet the baby and get right back to work?
Matt Jones
He sounds like the coach. They share responsibility and he was changing diapers during the walk through.
Drew Franklin
Okay.
Matt Jones
And I think that says. That says he is being a good father to his kids. It's now time for the victory bundle presented by Liberty Mutual. We pick three games that we like and then you can bundle them up and. And win and it'll be a beautiful thing. What you said the Broncos were a three point favorite to the Jaguars. Is that right?
Billy
Denver is. Let's see on this one.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, it is.
Matt Jones
Yes. I am going to go with the Broncos. The Jaguars have feasted in recent weeks on a below average schedule. Jacksonville is below sea Level Denver is actually. I don't know. Is that true or did I just make that up?
Billy
Probably a little above.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you think it's both a little true and I made it up.
Drew Franklin
Well, a little above.
Matt Jones
It's not as high above sea level as Denver is. So I'm going to say that Denver handles the element and I'm going to take the Broncos to do the three. So they are one of my. For the bundle. Drew, what about you?
Drew Franklin
Before I give mine, I have to ask Billy a question.
Billy
Yeah.
Drew Franklin
How bad are the Buccaneers? Because I didn't expect them to be a field goal favorite at Carolina. They're on the road. I mean, they've lost to the Saints. How many in a row have you lost?
Billy
It's like six of eight or five of seven. I would. I would stay away from the Bucks, especially on the road.
Drew Franklin
All right, I got. I'm going with Carolina getting points at home.
Matt Jones
Three, you're going with Carolina getting points at home. Interesting. See, I was going to take the bucks there.
Drew Franklin
That's what I wanted to ask.
Billy
You don't want to be on that side of history.
Matt Jones
Right.
Drew Franklin
Because they do seem. They do seem really bad lately. I was surprised to see that they're the favorite.
Matt Jones
So you're going to go Carolina. So we have Carolina and Denver. Billy, I'll let you pick one as well.
Billy
Okay. I think Atlanta is terrible and they are our favorite on the road in Arizona. So I'm going to take.
Matt Jones
You're feeling a little hot.
Billy
Jacoby Brissetta, I mean, he'll throw it 56 times. He'll complete 42 of them and they're going to get a win. Give me Arizona as a home underdog here.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Going home, dogs.
Matt Jones
Bob, Billy is with the hot Jacoby Brissette. Action is going to take the. The Cardinals. So a Cardinals, Broncos, Panthers victory bundle. I don't know if Liberty Mutual, when they were doing this was like, we want to have those three, but that's your victory bundle presented by Liberty Mutual. Start your quote@liberty mutual.com so I think you mentioned the big game this weekend. You got the 49ers, Colts. Do you give the Ravens any chance on Sunday night against the Patriots?
Drew Franklin
No, not at all. Not even a little bit. I think the Patriots are just looking too good right now and they'll get that done being in prime time and they'll be ready to go for the playoffs.
Matt Jones
Steelers, Lions, an elimination game for the Lions. They lose this game, playoffs are basically done for them.
Drew Franklin
What's going to happen they have to win. They're at home. I know the Steelers looked improved a week ago, playing good football now, but the Lions have to win this to stay in the home. You didn't give a number, but I'll say they win and anything.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I like the lines big in this game, by the way. I like them big. I think the Steelers have been feast or famine. They don't have to have this game. They still have the Ravens coming up in the game that'll decide the division. It's. It's. They're not going to make it as a wild card, so it's kind of a. I won't say it's a free game, but it doesn't really matter for them a ton. So I'm. I think the Lions. Well, I don't know what the spread is. I'm going to guess, is it. What Lions.
Billy
Seven to it?
Matt Jones
Seven.
Business Software Advertiser
Seven.
Drew Franklin
I was going to say four. Four and a half.
Billy
Minus seven.
Drew Franklin
So.
Matt Jones
Whoa, that. That is high. But I mean, maybe that's because Vegas and the betters think what I do, which is there's not a huge incentive for the Steelers in this game. So I do like the lines to win. Seven feels like a lot of points.
Drew Franklin
Jared Goff played really well last week in a loss, too. I mean, they look good, just didn't get a win.
Matt Jones
Are you willing to pull the trigger on your Titans beating the Chiefs?
Drew Franklin
How many are they getting beating them? What's the spread?
Billy
It is minus three and a half.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I like them covering three and a half. Yeah, I'll say they beat them. Titans haven't quit. The new. They've actually played much better since they've gone to the interim coach. Some rookies have stepped up, some guys gotten healthy. They're still one of the worst teams in the league, but they're not as embarrassing as they were in the first half of the season.
Matt Jones
By the way, you know, I'm flying to New Orleans. I'm actually flying Monday morning and Monday night the New Orleans Pelicans play the Dallas Mavericks. And I've contemplated going. Did you know you can get a suite, a full suite for. For Pelicans, mavericks, which includes 12 tickets to the game for $700.
Billy
Pretty. Pretty affordable.
Drew Franklin
So cheap.
Matt Jones
I want you to think about that for a minute. A sweet. So I'm contemplating getting a sweet and just taking mine.
Drew Franklin
Eating all the chicken tenders.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Just spread out.
Billy
Yeah.
Matt Jones
You know, but that's. I've never seen anything like that in my life. That's. I mean, can you Imagine being a Pelican's ticket sales rep. And they're kind.
Drew Franklin
Of exciting so far this year. They don't absolutely suck. Dallas is a good visiting team.
Matt Jones
Cooper, flag.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Yeah. You got to pull the. Pull the trigger on that.
Matt Jones
The reason I say that is the day before the Saints play the Jets. I think you are a masochist. If you do Saints, jets, followed by Pelicans, Mavericks. That's got to be. And you could. Or then the New Orleans bowl the next day. Like, how many people you think do those three sporting events back to back to back?
Drew Franklin
You could be the only one if you go to the Saints game. Yeah, the Pelicans game is so bad because everyone's going to the Saints game. They don't want to do the doubleheader.
Matt Jones
Yeah. The day before. So you could go Saints, Jets, Pelicans, Mavs, Western, Kentucky, Southern, miss three straight nights.
Drew Franklin
Well, I think you should pull off all three, though.
Matt Jones
Your wife would divorce you if you did. If you did all three of those back to back. All right, so now it is time for. For our survivor league. Drew and I are out. Billy remains in somehow, but I think it's going to be gone now. Billy, what they do now on these things is they start breaking them into segments. I'm not going to make you pick one of the two games of Packers, Bears, Eagles, Commanders. You already picked next week. You will have to do that. So what. Who do you got this week?
Billy
You guys were just talking about it. I'm all in on Tyler Shuck the New Orleans Saints to beat the jets at home for me to survive. We're really running out of teams here, so we are risking it with the Saints, but they've played much better the last few weeks.
Matt Jones
That's a dangerous pick. I'm trying to think what your other options would even be.
Billy
The other one I had circled, Texans. Have you picked the Texans? I have not picked Minnesota. I was contemplating them on the road against the Giants.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I wouldn't pick that, especially with nine. And you pick the Bills, obviously, right?
Billy
Yes. Pick the Bills.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I mean, the Saints. That's a very risky pick. But I guess. Have you picked the Broncos?
Billy
I've not picked the Broncos. And that is the other one I looked at.
Matt Jones
We're going to beat the Jaguar. What's more likely, Broncos beat the Jags or Saints beat the Jets?
Billy
Yeah, probably the Saints just because we saw. Saw Trevor Lawrence go for six touchdowns last week. So, I mean, I don't know what.
Matt Jones
Would you do in that situation, Drew?
Drew Franklin
Probably The Saints. But have you. Have you used the Lions yet? Did you list them on teams you've used?
Matt Jones
I.
Billy
Let me check.
Matt Jones
And the Lions.
Drew Franklin
I like the Lions, too, because they're. They're double the other points.
Billy
No, no, I haven't picked Detroit.
Matt Jones
I like the lines. But you've already picked the Saints. We're not going to talk you out. Yeah, I think of those three choices, I think I would have gone with the Lions. Okay. Okay. Now we're going to pick our touchdown. You both got one. I did not last week. So Billy and I are tied at five. Drew has three. Is that right?
Billy
That's correct.
Matt Jones
Okay, so he's two behind. Drew went first last week. So, Billy, you get to go first, pick the position and. Or pick the player in the position.
Billy
Yeah, I'm going to go past catcher here. Can I pick tight end at my receiver spot?
Matt Jones
Yes, you can.
Billy
Okay. Because I'm going. Trey McBride. I picked Arizona in the victory bundle for Livery Mutual, and Trey McBride is clearly the best tight end in the league. He's got 10 touchdowns and over a thousand receiving yards. Give me a little McBride for my pick.
Matt Jones
Okay, who is the running back for the Texans? There's. Who is starting for them right now?
Billy
Well, Nick Chubb just got hurt, and so it was the guy they pulled off up the rookie squad, the former running back from Louisville, Jahar Jordan. Jordan rush for over 100 yards.
Matt Jones
I got him. Let me put it a different way. Whoever is the first player from the Texans to carry the ball on a rush. Okay. At a running back, because they play the Raiders, they're going to score a lot. So whoever that is, I get that person. Is that fair?
Billy
Sure. So that's Woody Marks, or Dare, whatever that other last name is, or this other guy.
Matt Jones
A bunch of names. Whoever it is, the first person they hand the ball to, not C.J. stroud, but the first person they hand the ball to, he will then score a touchdown. So, Billy, you have to see who the first person is to see who it is that I have got it.
Drew Franklin
I mean, I can just. Can I just take a receiver room.
Matt Jones
And say that you have to take a quarterback now, so you're gonna have to pick a quarterback.
Drew Franklin
I feel like you just made up a rule, though. We've had to pick running back backs that like Gibbs and Montgomery. When I picked Gibbs, I don't get Montgomery if he carries it first.
Matt Jones
But I don't know these people's names. I feel like the fact that I don't know their names gives me Leeway.
Drew Franklin
So you got the Houston backfield.
Matt Jones
I get one. I get whoever touches the ball.
Billy
First carry.
Matt Jones
I just.
Billy
First carry.
Matt Jones
Whoever takes the first carry, I got him.
Drew Franklin
Okay. I've had quarterbacks a lot, so I think I'm out on most of them. Who's a quarterback that runs?
Billy
I was thinking Bo Nicks. Drew.
Drew Franklin
I think I've. I think I've used him.
Matt Jones
You could use. I mean, have you done Drake May?
Drew Franklin
I haven't done Drake May.
Matt Jones
I mean, I think Drake May is probably, if you haven't taken him yet, a pretty good pick. Philip Rivers.
Drew Franklin
Oh, I considered doing that, but remember, I took Max Brosmer just two weeks ago, so I've been getting.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I don't know if you can take. I don't think Phil Rivers is running.
Billy
We give you two of Philip, though.
Drew Franklin
I'll go J.J. mcCarthy for Billy.
Matt Jones
That's such a bad McCarthy. So this is. This is the biggest long shot of all in the touchdown parlay you've got. Who'd you pick again, Billy?
Billy
Trey McBride.
Matt Jones
Trey McBride. I think DraftKings will let you pick whatever guy on Houston gets the ball first. You think they allow that for an official bet? I think so, and I think they do. Or you can just wait till the first play and then you. Because you can bet those live.
Podcast Announcer
Or.
Matt Jones
And then J.J. mcCarthy. You would get long odds for that one, Drew. I think.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I've. I've had a lot to pick a lot of quarterbacks this year, and I've run out all the running ones.
Matt Jones
All right, well, thank you guys very much. I hope everybody enjoys their week. Sunday, we. I will actually be in Louisville, and then we'll do our Christmas edition, probably with me in New Orleans, which should be very exciting, Billy.
Billy
Oh, absolutely.
Matt Jones
And I do it live from the Pelicans game.
Drew Franklin
Oh, that'd be fun. Let's do it live during the New Orleans Bowl.
Matt Jones
Live from the Pelicans. Yeah, we could do it during the New Orleans Bowl. By the way, Southern Miss just sent me their team notes. Do you know that Southern Miss has the oldest player in college football? They have a punter that a freshman, and he's 30.
Drew Franklin
You're gonna be talking about him a lot. They're gonna. They're gonna be on offense. No, they'll be. It'll be first and 10 for the defense. And you'll be talking about their punter.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he's 30 and a freshman, which means he. You. He's gonna be 34 his senior year of college in Hattiesburg.
Drew Franklin
He's from Is he Australian? Yeah, he's from Australia.
Matt Jones
30 year old freshman I'm requesting, by the way, we request interviews. He's the only guy I want to talk to, so. All right, thank you folks very much. We'll see you on Sunday.
