NFL Cover Zero with Matt Jones and Drew Franklin is a production of the NFL and iHeart podcast. All right, episode four of the N NFL Cover Zero podcast. Matt Jones and Drew Franklin. I hope everyone out there is doing well on this Wednesday. We are getting ready for another exciting weekend of action after what was a, I think a fun week one. You know, the NFL started doing this thing where they pair all the good teams together and I think that works. Week one got everybody excited. There were record TV ratings or at least I can't keep up with the TV ratings every week now because it seems like they're always records. But Dr. Has me ready for the second week and, you know, the second week of doing an NFL podcast with you.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, if it's anything like last week, we're in for a fun time. I mean, last week you started with Thursday, Cowboys, Eagles, through that wild Sunday night finish, and you couldn't ask for a better first week. So let's keep that momentum going.
Matt Jones
And then my Bears stuck it up, stuck it up on Monday. I have to tell you, I. I don't know why I get my hopes up. You know, that Monday, it started with such excitement. Caleb Williams drives right down the field. Then they get a three and out. Stock actually got two, three and out. Stops come down, look like they might score again, end up with a field goal. But I was like, oh, it's good. 10 nothing, no problem. And then they didn't score again until the middle of the fourth quarter. The Bears are cursed, but J.J. mcCarthy looked nice in that fourth quarter. I was watching the Manning cast and Randy Moss was. I mean, he wasn't doing like, Collins worth in my. My Collins worth impressions, but he was close. He was so excited watching McCarthy.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. I saw he was named NFC Offensive Player of the week in that highly. I didn't realize.
Matt Jones
Big debut.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Not a great look for you all there in the fourth quarter. Giving up. What was it, like, three straight touchdowns or something? Just an absolute meltdown there on prime time for week one. But as a Bears fan, Titans fan, we're kind of used to it. Yeah, we're. We've seen those movies a couple times.
Matt Jones
I'm used to it. I was expecting it to happen. I knew that the moment I knew they were going to lose was when they. I think they went for it at some point when they were on, like, the 15 on 4th and 3, and they didn't get it. And I said, they're going to. They're going to lose. It's just. It's happening. It's just a matter of when. And then it occurred, I was. It was cool to see the 85 bears back. You know, that was my childhood. My childhood team. It was weird to see them be in their 60s and 70s. That was definitely a moment where I realized I was older than I sometimes appreciate. When I look up and they're like, oh, my, that's what Jim McMahon looks like now. Okay, so. But I still prefer to think of them as the Super Bowl Shuffle.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. Watching them in 85, when you're a kid, they're. They're these superheroes that are bigger than life. The reunions, they're a reminder that life comes for everyone.
Matt Jones
So Jim McMahon looks like. Jim McMahon looks like baby Billy, but without the. The wig, like he. I was. I realized I had not seen him in a long time, and so unfortunately, didn't. Didn't work out for the Bears. They've got a big game that we'll talk about going this week. Also, something important happened, Drew, which is. For the first time in my life, I'm going on a radio program as an NFL expert. So I get, you know, I get asked to go on programs sometimes to talk about this or that, but I've never been asked to go on to talk about the NFL. And generally, I don't do a lot of interviews. But this guy wrote me. He's from Edmonton, Alberta, in Canada, and he's like, listen to podcasts, think it's awesome. Would like to have you on to talk the NFL this week. And I'm in. So after we finish taping this, Edmonton, here we come. NFL expertise headed your way?
Drew Franklin
Yeah. I mean, you can't turn down interview opportunities. We're a new podcast. We got to get it out there however we can.
Matt Jones
Got to get it out there.
Drew Franklin
I didn't expect you to say you'd be in Canada for your first one, but, you know. Good, good. Can't turn them. Maybe talk a little.
Matt Jones
Well, it's for Connor McDavid. That's why I'm doing it for all the Edmonton Oilers, past and present. I owe it to my people. I've been to Edmonton. It was really, really cold when I went. I nearly got detained at the border. I've been nearly detained at the Canadian border three times for a range of offenses, including farting. So you never. And that's not a lie. So I'm looking forward to continuing my peace negotiations.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, we'll save that story for a rainy day, but I can confirm that that did, in fact happen.
Matt Jones
Okay. So the. As we get into week two, I thought we'd go over some stuff that Billy's going to have some news items to update you on the week. But overall, Week one, I think the biggest surprise to me after Week one was how well the packers play. Just the absolute dismantling of the Lions, seeing how well Micah Parsons fits in immediately in Week one and. And the biggest sort of disappointment for me on the other side would be the play of the Miami Dolphins. We'll do our rankings here in a minute of the top five in the bottom three, but the Dolphins were an absolute disaster. Does Mike McDaniel make it out of, say, week six?
Drew Franklin
It's not looking good. I mean, I don't even think that's a good Colts team that they went in there and almost got shut out by. His comments this week have not been pleasant. So it was a miserable experience. And if there's one positive takeaway, it's that it couldn't be any worse, that they're at rock bottom. I just don't see a lot of hope in them climbing out of that rock bottom for a while. Hopefully they can do better than eight points. But you've got drama with Tyreek. Two is turnover prone, and we know what his body's been through. There's just not a lot of optimism in Miami right now.
Matt Jones
I like when he said it couldn't be worse. I think it could. I mean, they still have. It's still one game and you can say because there's always a weird week one result. So maybe you convince yourself we're the Weird Week 1 result this year, but it could be worse. And we talked about on our season preview that it feels like they that maybe the act is wearing thin with Mike McDaniel. And so I think it's going to happen sooner rather than later. I'll be interested to see what the reception of the Miami fans are when they're at home next week. What about the Packers? I mean even in hindsight I went back and looked at some of the. I did something I never do, which is watch an NFL game twice. I went back and watched some of it because yeah, I did. I did a little film study last night. They were dominant. Jordan Love is kind of doing whatever he wants. Is he, is he an MVP candidate?
Drew Franklin
He looks good. I know there were concerns about how he'd looked this season after a good, good year last year. And then the little thumb is issue. But man, they hit on several explosive plays. I mean they were doing really about everything they wanted. It got to the point they didn't have to do much in the fourth quarter. The defense had done all the work. They were able to just sit on the ball and run out the clock. But that, that looks, I mean we all know what the Eagles are in the nfc, but the packers look like they're knocking on that door too. They look like a serious contender.
Matt Jones
Well, I thought it would be good after week one to sort of rank our teams top five in bottom three because this will change over the course of the year. And so for me right now at the top five, I think as long until they lose since they're coming off the super bowl you have to take the Eagles number one. I know the game with Cowboys wasn't perfect, but they get the victory so I'm going to me you held on to number until you lose. I think the Bills after you beat the Ravens have to be number two. But then I think it's up in the air. I'm going to take the packers third at this point because of how good they looked playing against the Lions team that, that was so good last year. I'm going to go ahead and take the Ravens number four. I know they lost but still even with a loss I think they should have won that game. They were the better team throughout most of the game. And then number five I think you can go a lot of different ways with I'm guessing I'm going to give it to the Chiefs based on reputation but with a Worrisome. If they lose to the Eagles this week, you might see they will drop out of the top five for me, but I'll keep the same. Basically four of the five teams I would have had going in, but since the packers beat the lines, they replace them for me. How about you looking at about the.
Drew Franklin
Same teams but with some different order? I'll start at the top and agree with you with the Eagles, super bowl champs until. Until they're knocked off. I can't put anyone ahead of Thursday Cowboys, you know, scoring on them early and have a little bit of shootout in that first half. That was unexpected, but I don't think that says much about the Eagles changing anything. They're still one of one for me in the NFL, but I got a surprise in number two. Even though they lost, I'm putting Baltimore.
Matt Jones
Titans like you did with the watchability. Are you putting your Titans in there?
Drew Franklin
Number two. No. Even though I lost, I'm going Baltimore. Derek Henry does not.
Matt Jones
Oh, really?
Drew Franklin
Derek Henry does not fumble that ball ever again. They're in Buffalo. I know. That's a.
Matt Jones
So you're going to pick the tight the Ravens over the team they beat?
Drew Franklin
I am. That's because you can't do that. That's because Derek only fumbles once and he just did it. He doesn't do it again.
Matt Jones
You're not allowed to do that. That's not. You're not allowed to do that. I'm. I'm throwing a challenge flag. You cannot have one game. One team beats the other one and you put them ahead of them. You can't.
Drew Franklin
I just did it. It's pretty cool. I just did it. And then I'll go Bills 3. Bills. Bills are my super bowl pick. I just know that the Ravens were kicking their tail until it got a little fluky at the end and some magic happened in the Bill Stadium. I think if. If that's a series, the Ravens win the series. So I've moved with the Ravens ahead of them and then Bill's 3, 4. I think you also had this. I like the packers here or no, you had Packers 3. But regardless, packers big climb for me. I didn't have them top five. Probably not even top seven or eight, honestly, until that game against the Lions, who I did think highly of. So Packers 4. And then I'll agree with you on the Chiefs. That loss in Brazil. I don't know if that says more about them or Herbert and the Chargers are a real threat in that division now. I'll give them that one loss I still think the Chiefs are a top five team.
Matt Jones
Well, it's a little fluky, too. You know, Xavier Worthy gets. Gets hurt. And that leads into Travis. Travis Kelsey. Well, actually, I'll tell you what. What it leads into is our news. I don't want to leave our man Billy out because he went scouring the AP wires. I don't even know if that exists anymore. You know, they literally used to have wires where they would, like, say, I don't know if they were wires. I guess it would come over a wire. I don't think it was actual wires, but it would come over a wire and they would say, here are the news. So Billy has been scouring those. He still uses those. He doesn't use the Internet, which. Which I think he needs to update. And he's going to have our news for the week. Billy, what are the news items?
Billy R Sports
Well, we can start with Travis Kelsey on his New Heights podcast. He took the blame for injuring his teammate Xavier Worthy in Brazil in week one. He said, quote, he wasn't ready for that first drive. He was supposed to be running his route for depth for Worthy, and he's got to be better. Worthy suffered a dislocated shoulder during that first game versus the Chargers.
Matt Jones
Yeah, they don't know if he's going to play this week. I thought it was interesting. Kelsey's been the league 13 years. He completely took responsibility, basically said, this was on me. I was supposed to be out of the way. I ran into him, I hurt him. I have to be better. You got to give him, like, points for honesty there, don't you? Maybe. I mean, might be. Maybe he's distracted by the wedding plans, but nevertheless, you can't be running into your teammates like that. No.
Drew Franklin
And he's. It's clear he feels terrible. I mean, he's the veteran of that locker room. Captain even said, At 13 years, I can't make that mistake. You've got a young receiver with all the potential in the world. He's a big part of your offense. And moments into the game, you'd literally run into him because of your mistake, and he's out maybe a week. Who knows? We'll find out. But you could tell that one's eating him up. And I think that's part of the reason the Chargers were able to pull that off. Worthy is a big thing. Big part of what the Chiefs are going to do, and they lost that part of the offense. That's probably a lot of it scripted going through him.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I think Kelsey said that he was a major part of the game plan, almost insinuating that going to Xavier Worthy was going to be essentially a huge part of how they ended up going against the Chargers. So, you know, I love a guy who takes responsibility for his actions. There's also a report, lots of reports now that Taylor Swift is the likely pick for the Super Bowl. So I want to. I did some in depth research on this. All right, so. So, you know, besides Roger Goodell going with Hoda and saying it, I was wondering what was making everybody say this. So I'm gonna give you some facts. I learned number one, the, you know, she has a deal with Coke and Pepsi has been the official sponsor of the NFL Super bowl show for like 15 years, but they will not be this year. And so some people think she was waiting for Pepsi to no longer be involved in order to do the super bowl halftime show. Now, I am someone who much prefers Coke to Pepsi and Diet Coke. And Diet Pepsi is basically the difference between, you know, gold and rust to me. So I do every time I go to a restaurant, somebody will say, I'll get a Diet Coke. And they'll go, is Diet Pepsi okay? And you just have to say, I, I guess I like. However, Taylor Swift has such a big difference about it. She won't even do the halftime show if she thinks you're going to be using Diet Pepsi.
Drew Franklin
It's a big twist. I didn't know this. And considering our, our halftime options with Taylor, I've always thought of. I prefer the taste of Coke, but it's always like the dated brand for me. I picture like the old Santa Claus and like the old ads where Pepsi's the cool. They did good with a halftime show for a while. So I don't know if Coke has the swag that Pepsi did in that spot, but I agree with you. It is the better, the better. Bever.
Matt Jones
Well, I think Michael Jackson that was. I think it started with Michael Jackson with it with Pepsi being the. The choice of a new generation. And now I guess the generation is finally ended and it's time for. For Coke and Taylor Swift to take over.
Drew Franklin
We know that Swifties will pay anything for a ticket. What is if she were to be the halftime show and let's say Travis is on the sideline like, do Swifties pump up the super bowl ticket market? It's already outrageous. But, but, you know, if, especially if Travis is there, you know, the Swifties are going to want to get in.
Matt Jones
I didn't even think about that. You think, you think the Swifties are such big fans that they would actually buy super bowl tickets just to see. Absolutely.
Drew Franklin
It's a Taylor Swift concert in the United States. Of course they're going to try to be there. There are people leaving the country, going to random places internationally just to get a look at her at a concert.
Matt Jones
I didn't even think. I didn't even think about that as an option. That. That is actually crazy to me. But, you know, maybe you're right. Okay. The second thing that people said, this is Super Bowl 60 this year, which I don't. I don't know that I'd made that realization, but It's Super Bowl 60 at the. On the Travis Kelsey Jason Kelsey New Heights podcast, Taylor Swift said, of course, that she makes sourdough. We talked about that on a previous episode, if you're keeping, you know, track with the news on here. But apparently she said in it that she makes it about 60% of her time.
Drew Franklin
Oh, who notices that? But I don't know.
Matt Jones
But I saw on this, I saw on the Taylor Swift super bowl rabbit hole that she makes it 60% of the time, which they think was a hint that she was going to do Super Bowl 60. Do you buy that?
Drew Franklin
If this were anyone else, I'd say this is stupid. But she's big on numberology. What does she call it?
Matt Jones
Numerology. Yeah.
Drew Franklin
And she loves these little Easter eggs. She's always leaving little clues anywhere. So the fact that it's Taylor, even though I think it's outrageous someone noticed that she said 60% of the time, I kind of believe she's dropping another hint there.
Matt Jones
Maybe I. So to me, now I'm officially on, by the way, every year it is about this time of year, apparently right around week two where they announced the super bowl halftime performer. So just keep, keep, keep, keep it, keep it tuned right here on NFL Cover 0 for the latest news. We'll have it before anybody else, I'm. I'm sure. What's next?
Drew Franklin
Oh, also, she has a new album coming out, this super bowl announcement. New album.
Matt Jones
It's really lining up 60% of her time. Super sour dough. It all is starting a lot. Exactly. All right, what's next?
Billy R Sports
The Bills fan who pushed Lamar Jackson and DeAndre Hopkins from the crowd the other night is banned indefinitely. Not from just all Bills games, but from all NFL games. He was ejected shortly after the shove, but now he will not be back.
Matt Jones
So it's indefinitely or is it ever indefinitely? So how does he reapply? No, I'm serious. Like, when I Hear when, when I, when I hear that I, you know, I'm a logistics person. I mean, I think it's clear he needs to be banned for some amount of time. But my logistics question is, number one, how do they make sure he doesn't get in? Like, what is the way they're going to make sure he doesn't get in? What if he has a fake mustache? I've wondered, I've wondered that.
Drew Franklin
I have a friend that's banned from Toronto Blue Jay games.
Matt Jones
Like, I do too. You might be on this. He might be on this podcast, actually. Friend me.
Drew Franklin
I.
Matt Jones
Same thing.
Drew Franklin
But like, how would they know if I slash my friend went to a Toronto Blue Jays? They wouldn't know. How do you, how do you pull this off?
Matt Jones
I think you should. I think you got to go to a Toronto Blue Jays game just to see. I. It would be hilarious to me because that's been 15 years, 12 years, whatever, since you've done it. If the moment we walked in, they just came and took you right out, that would be pretty amazing.
Drew Franklin
I'm like 10 yards away, walking up, getting my ticket out, and they're like, nope, out of here, Drew, we told you.
Matt Jones
And for people wonder why, it's because Drew smacked John Olawu.
Drew Franklin
He was talking, he was talking bad about everybody.
Matt Jones
He was walking around Dave, Steve came out and my man Drew just gave him a sucker punch. He wasn't allowed in. The second thing is, let's say he wants to come back. Like, let's say in 10 years, he feels like he served his time. Does he have to call the NFL and say, may I please come to a game again? What is, what does he have to do?
Drew Franklin
I think it's, it's like you got to prove your good behavior. I don't know how he does.
Matt Jones
I know you just call the toll free number at the NFL and say, may I please come back if I'm.
Drew Franklin
Him, I get a buddy and I go outside and I pick up trash outside Bills games and I'm like, look.
Matt Jones
At me, look at me.
Drew Franklin
Doing service for the NFL in the Bill made a mistake. Look, I'm helping people cross the streets, get into the game, and I'm just trying to be the best person.
Matt Jones
What if no one noticed? I mean, what if they didn't realize it was the same guy and it was just. That was for not.
Drew Franklin
Well, at least you're being a good person after your mistake. But I don't know how it's indefinitely. I don't know what changes. I don't know if they sent out a memo in three years or they've lifted the ban, but it's not surprising there was a punishment for that guy.
Matt Jones
Well, I think it was the right call, but I, I'm skeptical on the you can't come in the stadium bands for people that are not well known. I feel like there would be a way he could just grow a beard and he likely would be able to get in. But maybe somebody out there knows how they actually enforce these bands. I'm very curious. All right, what's next?
Billy R Sports
Well, we do another news note here.
Drew Franklin
We can.
Billy R Sports
Let's do two from the that's why.
Matt Jones
That's why I went to you was what's next on the news note? Yeah.
Billy R Sports
Okay, here I am and Liam Cohen said Wednesday that Travis Hunter will get more snaps on defense in Week 2 versus Cincinnati. He had six receptions for 33 yards and eight targets on offense and only six snaps on defense, including one tackle. That trails the news yesterday that the Jaguars are sending Tank Bigsby to the Philadelphia Eagles for a 2026 fifth and sixth round pick.
Matt Jones
So it's crazy to me. They're going to play more, I guess. You know, he had a decent game, but he only played eight snaps on defense. I mean, how many, how many snaps do you think that he could actually get in on defense? And it's clear they want to use him full time as a wide receiver. What's. What's the max? 8, 12, 15. Where. Where do you top it off?
Drew Franklin
Well, he played like 42 of 64 snaps on offense. If he's doing that again and he really is a feature receiver, I just don't know how you can play him much more on defense. I think you'd have to pull the offense down a little bit to give him defense time. I'll say maybe they get him up to 10, but that's already a big workload. We've never seen this done. Also, the one clip I saw of him, he kind of got beat a little bit one of his first plays on defense. Maybe he'll get his feet under him, give him a few more snaps, but it just seems like he needs to be an offensive guy and they'll ride this out a little bit for the PR.
Matt Jones
We did have an NFL Cover 0 listener in West Virginia text me and say that he did not think it was that impressive. Why? Everybody's acting like it's crazy. Travis Hunter can do it, that he played for his high school and played every play on both sides and he said, quote Matt, While I was tired, I still was able to do it. Travis Hunter can, too. Now, I don't know if West Virginia high school football and an NFL game are exactly the same, but Travis Hunter's done it so far, so, I mean, why not?
Drew Franklin
Yeah, okay, Good for the West Virginia guy. I think there's a little difference this week. Travis Hunter will be trying to guard. Let's see, their names are Jamar, Chase T. Higgins, Joe Burrow will be throwing at him. I just think that's a little bit different than the comparison, but good for that guy, going both ways and being a good player.
Matt Jones
You don't know where in West Virginia he was from. There were really fast people in that part of West Virginia. You just. You're so. You've always been so biased against people from the mountains. All right, what's your next piece of news, Billy?
Billy R Sports
All right, this is. This comes from Tennessee Titans coach Brian Callahan misinterpreting what the NFL rule is for a catch. It was, I believe, the third quarter. He did not challenge a play, and when it looked like a Titans receiver got an elbow down afterwards, after the game, he told reporters that NFL players need an elbow and a foot down for it to be a cat. He then later corrected himself and said he misinterpreted the rule. But many believe that was a missed opportunity for the Titans in a close game versus the Denver Broncos.
Matt Jones
Really bad luck for Brian Callahan to not know the rule. I mean, I. It's a really bad look. Like, I mean, to be honest with you, I don't. I knew the rule. And this goes back to my. Every football team needs a director of common sense on the sideline. Elbow, at least in college, in the NFL, has always been a catch down. It's crazy to me, Drew, that he would not have known that that was the rule.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. And that's my team. Not only did it hurt him at a big point in the game, it was a first and 20 late in the third quarter. It would have been a first down. But, like, when he gave his explanation afterwards, we all just. We were kind of embarrassed. Like, already there's questions about Callahan's play calling. He had a bad clock management spot in that game, and now he. The fact that he actually explained the rule wrong. It's not that he didn't challenge. He actually tried to say, no, no, no, no. I know the rule. This is the rule. And when he said it, that wasn't the rule. And he had to come back Monday and basically confess, yeah, guys, I. I got that. One wrong. But it's.
Matt Jones
Don't you just have to lie at that point?
Drew Franklin
But it's also just, don't you just have to go.
Matt Jones
It was my strategy. You have to be like that woman who voted in the AP vote that put South Florida. Didn't. Didn't rank South Florida, but raised Florida two spots. And they asked her why and she goes, well, it's a system. It's a whole formula. I can't really get into it. Which I thought was one of the great lie answers of all time. I feel like this would be a good thing for him to do. Just go. I mean, I thought his, I thought his elbow wasn't down. You got a lie, you can't say you don't know the rule.
Drew Franklin
And he was so direct. He was like, no, you have to get a foot in bounds with an elbow. And it's like, I'm at home. Like, I don't think that's the case, Brian. But it's not just him. You have a whole booth and a whole. That tells you when to challenge, not to challenge. How did no one in a type with a Titans headset on go? Hey, guys, wait a minute. That's absolutely a catch. We should challenge. Not a whisper of that. And that's the most embarrassing part.
Matt Jones
I think Brian Callahan might be an awful coach and I hate to say that about someone, but just, you know, when we, when you watched them last year, there was a lot of signs and then you could go, well, it was because of Will Levis or whatever as I sit here with my UK hat on. But I think, I think there might be. I think that might be another sort of leader in the coach fired this year. All right, one more, Billy.
Billy R Sports
Hey, I got one more if you'd like. The NFL is fining Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter over $57,000 for spitting on Dak Prescott in Week 1. But the league is also saying that the game he was ejected for will serve as his one game suspension. So he will be ready to go to play the Kansas City Chiefs in week two.
Matt Jones
It feels about right to me. I mean, he got a whole game. It happened right at the beginning. So he really didn't even get to play. So I feel like one game is fair. You know, I do an ESPN show with Herm Edwards. Herm Edwards was like, I'd make him in game two not play and stand next to me on the sideline and look at his teammates. And I was like, that's such an old school, great Herm Edwards thing to Say, but I feel like one game's probably about the right mile time. Drew.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, it was a game. He's just walking off to start the game. First game of the entire NFL season, prime time. Everyone's watching. He learned his lesson. He got his embarrassment. What I'm confused about is, like, when they have these meetings about the fines, is there a book that's like, spit 57,000. Like, how do we calculate what that wad of spit cost that he should be.
Matt Jones
It is a very specific number. 57,000. Like, it's a very. This is going to be the exact, the exact amount. Each piece of Spittle is worth $16,300 and we're going to get to 50. You had three and a half spittles.
Drew Franklin
So is that just a rule? So if someone were to spit, you know, this Weekend's game pitch, $7,062.
Matt Jones
$7,000.
Drew Franklin
That's the policy.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that makes sense to me. I think, I think it's perfectly, perfectly understandable. Let's go for a couple other things. First of all, two different players got cut for bad performance in week one. Jake Moody, the kicker for the 49ers, a third round draft pick just two years ago. As a kicker, he gets cut. I feel like every time somebody picks a quarterback in the first three rounds, they end up being terrible. Lesson is probably don't ever pick a quarterback until the third day. And then Xavier Gibson, the punt returner for the jets who made the big fumble that led Pittsburgh to being able to win, he too was cut, but both were kind of cut because of one major mistake. 49ers still won the game. They still cut him. Do you think one mistake should be enough to make you go home? Do you think you, like, cut somebody in game one to show we're not, we're not dealing with people's shenanigans?
Drew Franklin
With Xavier Gibson, that was Aaron Glenn sending a message. He called him out after the game, said, I'm only going to have people here that are here to win. I mean, he followed through with his words and cut him as soon as he could. Gibson's also a guy that, you know, fringe beat out another player for a spot. So if you're going to fumble right away, I mean, I guess you're going to get what's coming for you. With Moody, you know, he's been there a couple years, as you said, a big draft pick, a kicker. I might have given him another opportunity to prove it was a bad day. But now 49ers weren't having it. He missed two field goals and that was enough in a game they still won, as you said. So I was more surprised by the kicker change than the, the fumbled kick return with the Jets.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I was a little surprised by the kicker change, but I don't think outside of about five kickers I feel like the NFL just recycles kickers. But you, they cut them, keep them, cut them, keep them. I've always believed that kickers are so much more important than NFL teams act like, you know, they'll, they'll do it for a handful of. Right. They'll do it for, for the, you know, Justin Tucker for many years and there were, there are a few. But then in general a lot of them just, they come, they go, they come, they go and it's such an important position and it is interesting. I, I used to advocate why won't people pick kickers higher? Because they, they win or lose you a couple games every year and this is why you don't because then you pick them in the third round and two years later they're gone and you end up just, they just sign people off the street. That's another thing about kicking is they just sign people off the street. Now we asked on last week's show why is the kicking so much better now? And what I was told by a number of people who would know is kickers are now allowed to use their own balls. Did you know this?
Drew Franklin
Did not.
Matt Jones
So they don't just when it's time to kick, they take one ball off and they bring a kicking ball on. And the each kicker is allowed to massage and deep rub his balls before the game. And his rubbing of his balls can make them a certain type of happiness so that they will be more successful in their performance. And so these kickers have learned over the years how to manipulate and rub their balls in such a way that they will fly farther in the air. And that is why according to folks I talk to that they go that more and more made.
Drew Franklin
Well, ball care is very important and I'm glad that people are allowed to take care of their own. Now a good example of what you're saying about picking kickers and signing them. Just last week we're Talking about a third round draft pick who's maybe 24 years old is getting cut. Where the story of the weekend was a 41 year old who was coaching his son and hops on a plane a red eye and goes and wins the biggest game of the weekend.
Matt Jones
Well so, but that's why the added 10 or 15 yards is I guess this rule of self, ball massage growth recently has made it to where these kickers are much more successful and that's why the kicks go farther. So thank you to our listeners who actually gave us an answer to these very, very difficult questions. So now we also. It is now time to preview week two. It's coming up, starts tomorrow night. We're not gonna go over all the games, but I thought I'd go over the one that were maybe the most interesting or biggest storylines. But before we do that, you and I wanted to have a guest, right? We've talked about for a while that we, we want to have guests on this show. We don't want to be the only ones talking. But rather than start with a football expert, we saw love occur last Sunday. We saw two people bounded by the holy spirit of Cleveland Browns football join their lives together. You may have seen the of Brown Spider and First lady saying their vows in a Cleveland Browns tailgate parking lot. And so I said to Billy, billy, you are going to go get us first lady and Brown Spider. And if you were listening last week, Billy said, I don't have access to DM people on Twitter, because I don't. I'm not verified. Billy, nevertheless, you were able to make it happen. How did you do that?
Billy R Sports
Yeah, I just sent out a normal tweet asking Brown Spider and the first lady to follow me back so that I could DM them and set things up. And now I'm just waiting on my Tate Ratledge jersey.
Drew Franklin
That's right.
Matt Jones
You want me to follow through with that?
Billy R Sports
Oh, I mean, if you're a man of your word.
Matt Jones
Okay. All right. I will go to the NFL store and look up and see if you can even purchase a Tate Ratliff jersey. But if they. If I can't, and when I come back from South Africa, you, Billy R Sports, will have a tape Ratledge Detroit Lions jersey. Well, good. I'm glad that's what you want. But anyway, without further ado, let's talk. This was, we taped this earlier, our interview with our two famous Cleveland Browns fans. I'm Marcus Grant.

Okay, Drew, it's that time. It is now time to bring on our first ever live guest to open up. Kick off our our guests here on NFL Cover Zero. And I think we have the right one, don't you?
Drew Franklin
Exactly. I can't think of a better first guest, two first guests than the two we have today.
Matt Jones
That's exactly right. So we're seeing. We saw a lot of you saw a video from week one of two people who got married in a parking lot for the Bengals Browns game. It was Brown Spider and First lady. Two famous Cleveland Browns fans. And they have now joined us here on NFL Cover 0. Congrats to the new cover.
First Lady
Thank you.
Brown Spider
Thanks for having us. Thank you so much.
Matt Jones
Of course. So let's just start with the story. You guys met. I think I heard you met a few years ago at a Kansas City Chiefs Browns game. And Brown Spider. Tell me you didn't notice each other then, but what made you start noticing first lady when you Were ready to make your moves?
Brown Spider
Oh, well, you know. So we didn't meet in Kansas City in January 2021, 2020 season. After the Browns lost to the Chiefs, we all went to the brownsbackers establishment. And then a few of us said, hey, let's go out to a club. You drove, didn't you? I said, yeah, we can ride in my car. And first lady was one of the people in the car. We spent several hours together as a group of people, but I don't remember. Didn't remember her in particular. He didn't remember me in particular, but my car's a little weird. So he remembered that later when seeing each other on social media.
Matt Jones
Wait a minute. It's not just weird. What does he have in his car? First Lady? I think people need to know.
First Lady
Well, it is. First off, the car itself is Spider man blue. And there are blue Spider man hubcaps. There were a bunch of Spider man and random stuffies for anybody with grandchildren. In the back window, there was a Spider man hanging from the rear view mirror. So when I seen him on social media recording a video in his car, I immediately remembered the car and said, oh, this is that. This is that strange guy that dropped us. We all went to the club together after Kansas City game and sent him a friend request. And. And if you go back through both of our timelines, you'll see a couple Twitter kind of beefs back and forth between the two of us on views that we had that didn't quite line up.
Matt Jones
But it all. Well, you started beefing. What were you beefing about?
First Lady
Well, not beefing, but kind of. You know how Twitter is and people are strong in their beliefs. And we both were walking a path of self discovery after relationships and family changes, and we both had very strong opinions about things that we believe. And I can just recall a couple of times I made some posts from a female perspective and he had a male perspective that was a little different than mine. And we had a little back and forth. And I won't say what I thought about him at the time, but it all worked out.
Drew Franklin
We're glad it worked out. But before we learn more about this relationship, I need to know about this spider obsession. I thought it was just a nickname, but you're telling me. And stuffed animals in the car. The car's decorated like it. Brown spider. How did you even get this. This spider obsession you have?
Brown Spider
Well, I'm an old guy, so when I was a kid, I come home every day and watch Spider man from the, you know, Spider Man, Spider man does whatever a spider can. That. That old cartoon, that's from 1967. And I've been kind of obsessed since. You know, I have dreams sometimes of being Spider man and doing Spider man things. And so back in 2016, you know, first lady talked about self discovery stuff. I had gone through a significant separation. All my kids had grown up, and so I didn't have anyone to sort of run behind and be a caretaker for. And I had forgotten who I was. And one of the things that came back into my life was I had a. Ended up having a bunch of Spider Man T shirts that I collected, and I wore them to work all the time because I'm a psychiatric nurse. They encourage you to wear regular clothing. So all the patients call me Spider Man. And, you know, that's kind of, you know, the. The long and short of that.
Matt Jones
So you got what. So you became a Spider man obsessed person, and then you ended up meeting your first lady. So you guys, you.
Drew Franklin
You.
Matt Jones
You fell for each other. Now you're both Cleveland Brown fans. Is that like. It feels like it's a tough existence. Is it?
Brown Spider
Well, you learn to adjust. Just like I was driving down the street the other day and I saw a dog with three legs, and he was barking at everything, so he wasn't worried about not having four legs. So you get used to it being a Browns fan. You get used to the ups and downs, and you learn to embrace the community and the community of suffering, but broader than that, the community of the tailgates and the away games and running into the same people and, you know, getting to know people. And that's kind of how. That's how we met. You know, since 2019, we probably every year was three, four, five different games that we were at at the same time, not knowing each other until we really got to know each other in 2023.
Drew Franklin
So let's talk about this.
First Lady
You know, it's easy. It's easy to be a fan of a team, a fan of a person, when everything is going right. That being a Brown fan, you build a lot of resiliency. You learn how to find the silver lining and things that aren't quite always perfect. You learn how to take the blows as life deals them out to you. So it's helped build a character that's made us a perfect couple.
Drew Franklin
Let's talk about this tailgate. We all saw the one last Sunday. I believe they said it was in the muny lot where you all tied the knot. First Lady, I'll ask you, was it just an automatic decision we're doing it before a Browns game. Or did you consider other venues, maybe doing it at a church? Or did you all just know this was the place you had to do it outside the stadium?
Brown Spider
Well, we.
First Lady
The Brown Spider proposed on Father's Day, so between Father's Day and the opening game is 86 days. And we probably waited about 30 days before we made our very first plan. And when we went back and watched the proposal video because one of our family members recorded it, he actually said after he proposed, ha ha, we're going to get married in the Mooney lot. And it just kind of snowballed from there. You know, we both.
Matt Jones
Isn't that what every girl wants, First Lady? Isn't that what every girl wants is to get married in the Moody lot?
First Lady
It should be what every girl wants if she doesn't. If. If a man is willing to marry you, you get married where he says you're getting married, and he said it. Was that up my alley?
Matt Jones
So I watched the wedding. People are all in. In Brown's gear. You. You guys. Did you just invite anyone that was at a tailgate that wanted to come?
Brown Spider
Well, the. The way the Muni lot is set up is it's iconic. It's huge. And so we had to do some planning. It's first come, first serve. So long story short, I had to buy 14 parking spaces, and I had gone down there a few times to pre plan how this was going to go. So we basically had about 100 chair set up for audience and velvet rope around that. We had a stage that was 8 by 24 and 2ft high so that we were lifted up so that people who are standing around watching could actually see us as well. We had the backdrop there so things like you said, it snowballed. And once you get an idea and well, we need to do this and we need to do that. But so that's kind of how that went. Yeah.
First Lady
We had two different versions of the Evan Evan Evite, and one version was for VIP access. And we provided lanyards for everybody that was in those 100ft. And separate from that, everybody in the Mooney lot was invited. If you could get down to that side of the Mooney lot to stand around. That's why Charles planned for the stage to lift us up. But we provided 100 seats for our very special family, friends, Twitter folks. Season ticket members that had never been to the Mooney lot were able to come down and to watch us. We wanted everybody that's a Browns fan that was in the Mooney lot. Die hard fans. We wanted them all to be able to be a part of our special day because they're a part of our everyday lives from September through January.
Drew Franklin
Did you do a first dance and what was the first dance song?
Brown Spider
Well, so it rained. The weatherman said it was going to be clear and it rained from. Well, we went into the lot at 5am and it started raining 5:30. And it rained up until. And a little beyond the time we were supposed to start at 9:30. So we weren't able to get the sound set up because, you know, electronics and all that. And we were running around doing that. So we didn't do a first dance. We actually didn't have music. I sung and rapped and sort of hyped the crowd from the microphone. I wasn't able to get the microphone set up.
Matt Jones
Okay, wait, wait, wait, wait. Hang on, hang on, hang on. Brown Spider, you sung and you rapped. What did you sing and rap? I need to know.
Brown Spider
Oh, it was. Well, let's see. I don't know what you heard about me and then.
Matt Jones
Yes, I like it.
Brown Spider
A dollar out of me off the top of my head. Two years ago, a friend of mine asked me to say some MC rhymes. I asked the crowd, did anyone know the words to Here Comes the Bride Night when it was her time to come out. I mean, I just had to ad lib because we didn't have the.
Matt Jones
The music because she didn't have sound. I understand. Well, let me. We just got a second. Let me ask you this. Give me both of you. Give me your favorite Browns player in history.
Brown Spider
Oh, I'm gonna go with Bernie, man. Bernie Colsar represents everything it means to be a Browns fan. He chose us. He manipulated the supplemental draft to play in Cleveland and he fell short so many times the three losses in the AFC championship game. And he's still a local hero. He's battling some health issues right now, and he cannot be more positive in his outlook. So we just love Bernie Kosar to death here in Cleveland. You know, there's so many Browns players that we love over the years, but Bernie's got to be number one in our hearts. I.
Matt Jones
First lady.
First Lady
I would second that. This is always a hard question for me because I have a. Depending on the decade, right. I'm going to go with a new school player. Miles Garrett has always been one of my absolute favorite players. He's just such a humble guy. My guy loving dinosaur loving Spider Man. I love that he loves dinosaurs. He's just a down to earth person. I have had a chance to meet him in person one time and I was. I'm not a starstruck person but I was absolutely starstruck by Miles Garrett. What he has been able to do with his back. He had a great we didn't win on Sunday, but he had a great game. He got after Joe Burrow. I can't wait to see Joe Burrow's tombstone in Myles Garrett's front yard when Halloween rolls around. So I'm going to go with Miles.
Brown Spider
Garrett for this one.
Matt Jones
Well, I hope you guys have a very successful marriage. Where's the honeymoon?
Brown Spider
London. The Browns play in London October 5, I think it is. So we're going to London. We're flying out October 1st and we're gonna kick it around London and eat some weird food and it's not that weird.
Matt Jones
Do whatever, you'll love it. It's not that different. Brown spider, first lady. Very cool. You ended up on ESPN in Now you're on the NFL Cover Zero podcast. We appreciate your time.
Brown Spider
Thank you so much.
First Lady
So much. We appreciate you having us. Thank you. Anytime you want us to come back, let us know. We'll, we'll make an appearance.

Matt Jones
Well, that's a beautiful story, I have to say. It really is a beautiful story of love finding its way in the Cleveland Browns parking lot. What do you think about the Spider man car? I kind of liked his explanation of it. He goes, you know what? Things weren't great in my life at the time I turned to spider.
Drew Franklin
You know, at first I thought, you know, car full of spider stuff, that's different. But then his explanation of, I kind of found my inner child. And he mentioned being a nurse, where they encourage him to dress up like that. So I love that he's all in on the spider gig and has made it a bit of his Persona.
Matt Jones
If you were to take a superhero and turn your car into an homage of one of them, which one? Which one do you think you would do?
Drew Franklin
My favorite superhero are Ninja Turtles superheroes. Because I was a big Ninja Turtle guy growing up. Maybe I could have some kind of pizza car. I had like a pizza shooter. Maybe if I could get some kind of Ninja Turtle pizza set up, I would really be killing it.
Matt Jones
I like that question. Are Ninja Turtles superheroes?
Brown Spider
Yes, they are, right?
Matt Jones
I'm gonna say yes.
Drew Franklin
Part of the Marvel verse that's taken over the world. But that's what I grew up on.
Matt Jones
I'm gonna say I've gone to the Tesla. I'm going to say that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are superheroes. And I think if there's one thing women would like, it is someone who drives around in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle car.
Drew Franklin
Cowabunga, dude. I might even do this. Anyway, this isn't a podcast bit. I might dress up my Toyota Highlander to be the Ninja Turtle car.
Matt Jones
There was a time that the only four artists in history I could name were Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello. And. And I actually think Raphael was the big winner there because I think if not for the Mutant Ninja Turtles, I don't think anybody would remember the art of Raphael. You know, Leonardo da Vinci, he had his own. People know him. Michelangelo, you know, even Donatello. People might. Versace sort of took his name later. But I think Raphael owes a lot of his current. When I go to Europe and I see a Raphael painting, I'm like, like, cowabunga, dude. There you go. So I think he owes a lot of thanks to the N. Turtles.
Drew Franklin
Yeah. There was also a time when I can only name four artists because of the Ninja Turtles. And it's right now, currently they're still the only four I can name it.
Matt Jones
Wait a minute. Come on. You can't name any other famous artist. Let's see. Can you get. Can you give me. Can you give me three. Give me. Give me three more famous Drew Franklin endorsed artists artist.
Drew Franklin
The. The fifth Ninja Turtle would have been Pablo or Picasso because he's an artist, right?
Matt Jones
That's true. Picasso should have been. Well, Pablo would have been a good.
Drew Franklin
Name for a turtle, but a great turtle. Maybe they can.
Matt Jones
He wasn't. He wasn't from the Renaissance. They probably left him out for that reason. But who else can you do two more?
Drew Franklin
Banksy.
Matt Jones
Banksy.
Drew Franklin
Count. I love Banksy. Big Banksy fan. Kind of like a Ninja Turtle.
Matt Jones
Banksy is younger than the Turtles, though, unfortunately. He does live in the sewer, though.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I'm onto something here.
Matt Jones
Well, actually, I don't know if he lives in the sewer. He paints in the sewer. That's be rude to say he lives there. Anyone else? I've given you. You've got six.
Drew Franklin
That's fine.
Matt Jones
The guy that does the to tomato can. Do you know the cable soup can.
Drew Franklin
That's. That's Warhol. Andy Warhol.
Matt Jones
Bam.
Drew Franklin
Look at that. Donatello is still the best.
Billy R Sports
Impressive.
Drew Franklin
Still the best.
Matt Jones
Very impressive. Salvador Dolly. That would be the next one you could have put in. He did a lot of. I think he sp.
Drew Franklin
What about Bob Ross? Yes. Account.
Matt Jones
I'm going to take. I'll take Bob Ross. All right, let's talk about some games this week. We'll start Thursday night. Commanders and packers big game.
Drew Franklin
Definitely. Especially packers with all their news recently and how good they looked last week. Commanders look good last week. I. I know they played the Giants, but outside of the Eagles, these are the two teams to watch the NFC and we're getting them in week two standalone game on prime time. I'm really looking forward to.
First Lady
To it.
Matt Jones
Who you like? Well, first of all, who would you rather have long Term I say tomorrow you get to start a franchise. I will give you either Jaden Daniels or Jordan Love.
Drew Franklin
Who you take it today, Jaden Daniels because last season was so awesome. But as this year goes on, Jordan Love could pass him. But right now that rookie season Jaden Daniels had was pretty amazing. And then last week again the Giants. But he looked to look good doing it again. So I lean Daniels, but I am very high on Jordan Love too. These are these guys of the future.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Your upside is with Jaden Daniels because he looks like he could be amazing, but there's still a possibility that you could have a regression like C.J. stroud. I mean his game last week wasn't, you know, it wasn't like crazy. I tend to say don't put too much stock in week one going into the season. I would have said Jaden Daniels. So I'm still going to say Jaden Daniels. But. But Jordan Love, I mean if he gets, if he's 90% of what he was last Sunday, I think you could make the argument that he is. Plus you still have Jaden Daniels on a rookie deal and I think that makes a big impact. However, this week, where is the game? Yeah, then I got to take. I think I'm going to take Jordan Love at home. Short week. That's a big thing to me when you. The home team on Thursday night has a huge advantage. So I'm going to take Jordan Love in the pack.
Drew Franklin
I like the packers here too. Heck, I might have even taken them if the Commanders were home. Even though I'm high on the Commanders, I still think the packers are going to be elite this season. Probably get a little more Micah Parson, I noticed he mentioned he knows about 80% of the play playbook and he's still trying to play the I'm the new guy role. But Michael Parsons still Michael Parson. I think they're going to win Thursday night.
Matt Jones
Eagles, Chiefs. I'm surprised this game Sunday at 4:30 that's like when I was a kid then they, you know, 8 o' clock has been getting kind, kind of the best games for a while now. You get a Sunday 4:30 Super bowl rematch in Kansas City. I think the environment's going to be unbelievable games. Also important though for Kansas City after losing in week one. Historically when you have a Super bowl rematch, I think the last seven or eight times the team that lost in the super bowl has won like five of the last seven. So do you like the Chiefs at home to beat the Eagles juggernaut.
Drew Franklin
Even though The Eagles were my number one power ranked team just earlier in the show. I think the Chiefs get him at home. We're going to get a laser focused Travis Kelsey because of his big goof last week. Chiefs can't go oh and two, they don't even know what that means in Kansas City. So it's a kind of a must win game for them already getting back to Arrowhead for the first game of the year. I still think their loss in Brazil says more about the Chargers being good than it does the Chiefs going the other direction. So I will say the Chiefs in a very close one get the Eagles back in this game.
Matt Jones
The history of teams that go Owen to making the playoffs is not good. I mean it's. I don't know what the number is, but I feel like we say it every year on ESPN. It's a very small number of teams that go 02 and end up making the playoffs. I think the Chiefs are going to be one of them though. I think they're going to lose this week. I think there's going to be a come to Jesus moment. The problem is you're probably not going to have Xavier Worth, you're not going to have Rasheed Rice first six weeks. So they still, I mean they're kind of now back to where they were last year without having a receiver. I think by the end of the year that won't be as big of an issue. But it is an issue right now. So I'm going to take the Eagles to win. I would love to go to that game though. I think it'll be, I mean that app. We've been to Chiefs games. That atmosphere will be amazing. I'm sure they're going to, they're going to want revenge. But I think the Eagles take the victory. My Bears go to Detroit to play the Lions in a game where the loser is.02 and probably two games back in the division. Dan Campbell says this is a must win. We cannot lose this game. Will they find a way to pull it out?
Drew Franklin
I think so. Kind of like the Chiefs. This is one they really need to win. Your Bears, I hate to say it with you looking at me on the screen, but I don't know if the Caleb Williams experiment is going to be what you all want it to be.
Matt Jones
So I like you're, you're already out on Caleb Williams.
Drew Franklin
I was never really all the way in. I was still like, okay, we'll give him some time. I'll give him a little more time. But with the way the Lions Lost last week and how dialed in they will be like the Chiefs and I go down. Owen too. I like Detroit here.
Matt Jones
I'm not out. But he's got to make those throws, right? Like, I mean if when you. When you go back and look, he had throws that. If he makes them, the Bears win the game. There was a third down where he had a guy open over the middle, just overshot him. If he makes it, the Bears probably get a field at least a few field goal. That was I think the play right before the guy missed the field goal to go up, I guess to go up 14. So I'm. I think the lines win. I thought that was a really poor effort from Detroit with the new coordinators. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until week two. But the Bears win this game, then I do think you have to go look at Dan Campbell and say, wait a minute, was it you or was it Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn?
Drew Franklin
No doubt because they look so bad last week. That was one of the best offenses a year ago. Couldn't get anything done. If they can't beat the Bears, you're at home. I think it's a horrible look for Dan Campbell and the team that does lose this. Talk about going down 0 and 2. You're owing to in your division in this game. Because both teams opened up last week playing divisional opponents.
Matt Jones
The AFC has two games against each other. The Buffalo Bills are at the Jets. New England is at Miami. All right. Oh, and one. That's both teams in these games in division. Let's start with New England and Miami. Is this a loser is out in week two?
Drew Franklin
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Especially if it's Miami. You're at home if it looks anything like the game did last week at Indy. If you're not scoring points with two in that offense, I think it's into the road certainly for the Miami in this year. And the McDaniel conversation is, is that seat as hot as it can get if you can't play better at the Patriots after they didn't look too great last week.
Matt Jones
I thought Drake May though looked bad last week. I mean Drake may had a lot of opportunities for plays he could make. There were people who were saying poor man's Josh Allen. I mean really poor man. Like, you know, different way, different tax bracket for. For him. I think that. I think the Patriots win. But this to me is a. Whoever loses this game, I'm scratching out of the play. This is really the only one. But because they both look so inept last week in games that they, I think they should have won. If you lose again, especially if you lose a neft, I'm scratching you off now. Buffalo is at the Jets. I thought the jets looked as good in defeat as you could, to be honest with you. Any chance they can pull off the upset at home against Buffalo, a team I think they've only beaten once in like the last six years.
Drew Franklin
I don't have the upset, but I have them covering the touchdown spread and making this a game. I think you're gonna get a little bit of a Bills hangover. A little bit of it's the jets. And then the jets got that little taste of success last week and got it ripped away. That was one of the best offenses all weekend. They just couldn't get a win out of it. I think the jets are going to be better than people expect and that this one will come down to the wire. The Bills will still win, but I think we finally have a competitive Jets Bills game for the first time in a while.
Matt Jones
Okay, see, I couldn't disagree with you more on what it's going to be. What's the spread because my seven and.
Drew Franklin
A half and where you look touchdown.
Matt Jones
I'm definitely teasing it, but I probably will load up on the Bills. I think they destroy them. I think this is one of those where the jets had a great game but people now feel too good about it. I've been part of the Justin Fields experience, right.
Drew Franklin
Even though I'm calling for a close game here, I know I'm kind of bought into the field field type in week one. And I fully acknowledge that I will not be surprised if on Sunday's episode we're talking about the bills winning 42 to but I'm going to, I'm going to give the Jets a week.
Matt Jones
By the way, Sunday's episode I will be in Johannesburg, South Africa, which is really good for NFL games. They have a really good package down there of, of being able to watch. But for people who don't know, maybe new to this podcast or us, I am going to South Africa for two and a half weeks. I have, I've. I've talked with folks around the NFL. They say I can watch the games down there. They gave me like this whole code and system, but we'll see. I'm going to go to sports bars throughout Johannesburg. If I can't find them, I will watch them here on my iPad.
Drew Franklin
Well, we'll be ready to on the end here in the studio in Lexington. We'll be ready to figure this out, however it's going to work, we'll get through it.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I'm excited. You know, how many, how many podcasts do you think have ever been done from South Africa about the NFL ever been before? You think any.
Drew Franklin
If they have, they didn't make it to. To my radar. Certainly not. I don't think it's on the sports charts.
Matt Jones
Yes. And by the way, thank you to folks. We got all the way up to number two. Stupid Pablo Torre had to break a big story and stay number one, but we got all the way up to number two on the charts and that's because of all you all. And our first, our last episode was in the top 100 on episodes, which I think is a really good sign. So please tell your friends about about it and tell us and rate and subscribe now.
Drew Franklin
Billy could have broken that Kawhi Leonard Scoop. We would have been number one. You could have done it, Billy.
Matt Jones
Billy had it. Billy. Billy had Billy. Scoop was about Tate Ratledge and we didn't want to make him mad, so we didn't do it. Three games with teams that are one and oh, the winner will go to two and oh, and probably be a little bit of a surprise. You just quickly tell me which one's going to win. Broncos. Colts. Who goes to two?
Drew Franklin
Broncos. The Colts had a lot of fun last week, but I just can't believe in Daniel Jones until I see it a few more times.
Matt Jones
I'm going to say the game is in Indianapolis, though. I'm going to say Colts. I'm going to say Danny Dimes goes to two and oh, they're a train and you need to get on it. Jaguars are at Cincy. Cincinnati Bengals, home opener. What you got?
Drew Franklin
Bengals might have been my disappointment of the week last week that, well, they have like 140 yards total offense. 180 something crazy for that offense. I. They have to bounce back this week. I think it'll be a big borough chase game. Bingo's.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Give me the bounce back. Jaguars look too good. Cincinnati look too bad. The Bengals get the win. And unlike most years where they go Owen two, in my opinion, they go two and oh, and then the Chargers and the Raiders, a crazy game for first place in the AFC West. The Raiders looked really good for the Charger Chargers. They won't have had a home game yet. I don't think it matters. Sometimes it's worse for them at home. So who you got? This one's tough for me. It's almost a coin flip.
Drew Franklin
I Bet against the Raiders last week in New England. They proved me wrong real quick, but I'm pretty high on the Chargers, and not just because of that game in Brazil. I thought Holly. Them for the season began. Then Herbert proved. Proved to be great in that game. When you have like 300 yards, three touchdowns against the Chiefs. I'll go Charger here, but.
Matt Jones
But I'm gonna go Charger.
Drew Franklin
Tip of the cap for the Raiders. They're gonna be better than I expected.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I'm gonna go Chargers as well. Do you think Justin Herbert. Do you think that if he walked down the street in New York City, anyone would stop him?
Drew Franklin
Unlikely. I saw he's got a new.
Matt Jones
I'm serious.
Drew Franklin
I saw he's got a new model girlfriend. Is she walking with him? Maybe. Maybe if she's there but Herbert alone.
Matt Jones
Who's the model girl? Girlfriend?
Drew Franklin
Madison Beer.
Matt Jones
Who's that?
Drew Franklin
I don't know, but the Internet made a big deal.
Matt Jones
Is she a model or she. Wait a minute. I feel like I've heard her. She's like a tik tok.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, she's. I think she sings or sang at one point. Has a song maybe in a movie.
Matt Jones
As a career or like you've heard her sing at her church.
Drew Franklin
I. I believe she broke in as a singer. But then, you know, she's everything now, regardless. She's not ugly.
Matt Jones
She's everything. I've never heard of her. How can she be everything?
Drew Franklin
I hadn't heard of her until this week and then I saw everything.
Matt Jones
Or she's nothing.
Drew Franklin
I just know how the Internet reacted to Herbert taking her out to eat after he beat the Chiefs. So it seems like the new it couple in LA after he took down Mahomes.
Matt Jones
How can they be? I don't know who she is. What does she do? You haven't told me what she does.
Drew Franklin
No, I'm telling you. I don't know either, but it's a big deal. We need to look. This is the new it couple in the NFL behind Taylor, and I'm going.
Matt Jones
To look her up. Billy, by the way, this is who you have to get as our guest next week.
Drew Franklin
I will give you the alternate Tate Ratledge jersey if you get her for this.
Matt Jones
Madison Beer is a singer. There you go. She's an American singer. It says she used to. She got coverage with Justin Bieber, posted a link to one of her songs. That's her second sentence on her Wikipedia is that Justin Bieber posted a song. So you're right. She's a singer and she Also has appeared on RuPaul's Drag Race.
Drew Franklin
And now with Justin Herbert on the streets of la.
Matt Jones
Wow. Okay. Well, there you go. Well, congrats to her. And congrats to Justin. Not Justin Bieber. Justin Herbert. Maybe she has a thing for Justin.
Drew Franklin
Could be a good year for Justin.
Matt Jones
Justin Trudeau will be next. All right. Finally. No, most people won't care, but you will. The Rams play at the Titans. A rematch of the Super super bowl that haunts your world. Are you going to be in Nashville to watch it?
Drew Franklin
No, just Titans. Rams in the same sentence. It haunts me. It takes me back to 2000. We all know the one yard stop on the Super Bowl. Lowest moment of my sports fandom. I don't love that they're on the schedule this year. It's in Nashville. One of my best friends is a Rams fan. I actually skipped his super bowl party in high school during that game. He wants me to meet him in Nashville. Scholar. I love you not doing it. Staying away from it.
Matt Jones
You're not going to go?
Drew Franklin
No.
Matt Jones
That's brutal.
Drew Franklin
If there's any. Any sports trauma that I carry with me, it's Kentucky basketball with Wisconsin, and it's the Rams Titan Super Bowl. Those two still hurt me where Jesus lives. And I'm just not ready to walk into a stadium where both of those teams are on the field.
Matt Jones
Hurt you where Jesus lives?
Drew Franklin
Right in the heart.
Matt Jones
Is that a sign it hurts you where Jesus is.
Drew Franklin
It's been 25 years since that game. I still can't even look at the Rams and the Titans jerseys hanging up on a shelf next to each other.
Matt Jones
I didn't. I didn't know that was a saying. I'm going to have to start saying that hurt you where Jesus lives. Okay, well, I'm going to take the Rams as well. I think they're good. That Texans game was really boring. I think this game will be boring, too. But I think the Rams win in Nashville got over his back problems, too. That's. That's good. They had. Yeah. I told you. Just one shot and they'll be. He'll be ready to go. It'll hurt. It hurt the rest of the week, I'm sure. But for that. For that part of the game. It did not. Now we're doing a Survivor league here on. On NFL Cover 0. All three of our teams won. I had the Broncos. They were able to win in a close game against the Titans. Commanders beat the Giants. And then Billy kind of went off the grid a little bit and took the Jaguars and ended up getting it. So let's. I picked first last time. Drew, you get to pick first this time. Which team would you like? You cannot pick the commanders.
Drew Franklin
Yeah, I have one. I think I'm about to say out loud. And it's going to be one where when we leave and I get my car, I'm going to go, that was so dumb, but I'm going to do it. I'm taking the Cowboys versus the Giants. Great. Really pick.
Matt Jones
You're picking the Cowboys versus the Giants.
Drew Franklin
It has nothing to do with the Cowboys. I think the Giants suck and they're going to Russell again. So I'm putting my faith in the Giants sucking more than the Cowboys doing well.
Matt Jones
It's a shocking pick to me this early in the year.
Drew Franklin
I'm aware. That's why when I get in my car, I'm probably going to go, that was a bad idea, believing in the Cowboys on anything. But I think the Giants are a mess right now, and before they switch to Jackson Dart, I'm going to expect a loss out of them.
Matt Jones
All right, well, Billy, you're next. You cannot pick the Jaguars. So who you got?
Billy R Sports
That was on my list, so I thought that was a good picture. I am going to go off the beaten path as well. Well, I'm taking the Cardinals at home versus the Panthers.
Drew Franklin
Picking.
Billy R Sports
Cardinals.
Matt Jones
Panthers is like, that is a game that is made for. They switch it over to Matt Sarkeesian and the Panthers are up six with two minutes to go. And Kyler Murray's driving like you're really going to do that?
Billy R Sports
I'm giving a little Kyler Murray the chance to prove us wrong. He hasn't been playing video games. He's been studying his playbook.
Drew Franklin
If you look at the point. If you look at the point spreads, that. That one's a lot better. Mine's a touchdown and a half. Mine's only three points.
Matt Jones
Those are both shocking to me. Like, there is not a world I would have picked either one of those. Well, okay, so if I'd picked first, I was going to pick this one. You all left it for me, which I cannot believe I thought it would be gone. I mean, give me the Ravens at home against Cleveland if you're going to see.
Drew Franklin
I don't want to waste the Ravens. I got to save the Ravens.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but you're going to be gone before you have a chance to waste them. I mean, like, you're going to be out.
Billy R Sports
That's a divisional matchup, Matt. Those games can be close.
Matt Jones
What's the spread on it.
Drew Franklin
Ten on Browns, Ravens.
Matt Jones
Yeah, let's look.
Drew Franklin
I don't have that one in front of me.
Matt Jones
It's got to be a big number.
Drew Franklin
I don't think.
Matt Jones
I mean, this.
Drew Franklin
It won't be. Oh, yeah, it's a big number.
Matt Jones
10, 12, 12 and a half. Come on, that's easy. I mean, yes, there is an argument to save teams, but save them for what? I mean, you want to get them in a circumstance where you feel comfortable they're to going win. Is there an easier game on the schedule this year for the Ravens than Browns at home? I mean, I don't think there is.
Drew Franklin
So I don't like picking the most obvious for that reason. I like if I'm going to win, I'm going to need a good team at the end of the Survivor. If I'm going to lose, why not lose in week two? You know, you got to gamble early, save the good.
Matt Jones
You know, because it's fun. Well, first of all, there's only three of us, so it doesn't take long to survive.
Billy R Sports
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Who are you? Who do you think you're going against? 3. I'm just sitting there.
Drew Franklin
Well, I know, but I mean, I'm. In case we get to that point, I'd rather have the Ravens, the Bills, the Chiefs available later in the year.
Matt Jones
I think There is a 27% chance I win this week and it's over in week two. Okay, now we do our. Anybody score touchdown, anytime you get to pick. Remember we divide them into quarterback, wide receiver, slash tight end and run running back. So Billy. Oh, so drew it first last week. He picked in Joku. He cannot pick in Joko again the rest of the season. Billy, you pick McCaffrey as a running back, you can still pick another running back, but you go first. You can pick any position you want. What do you got?
Billy R Sports
Okay, I am going to go with the Colts Jonathan Taylor to score against the Denver Broncos. I really like what Daniel Jones and the Colts did. Jonathan Taylor is the workhorse. Give me a touchdown for Jonathan. J.T.
Drew Franklin
Billy, right here, my notes. I wrote down one player for my pick. There's Jonathan Taylor. You took the one I wrote down.
Billy R Sports
Yeah, I see it. I didn't see that beforehand. No.
Drew Franklin
So thank you for taking my word.
Billy R Sports
Thank you.
Matt Jones
Interesting. John Taylor, he didn't score. All right, so you. So you pick you. So you've picked a running back. So now I either have to pick a quarterback or a wide receiver and whatever I don't pick is what Drew will have to pick. So I use Jalen Hurts. Last week it worked. That's why I have a one nothing lead on everyone. So I'm gonna have to go a different direction. I'm sitting here looking, you know, again, if, if you're gonna leave it for me and I get to pick them, might as well go all in on the Ravens and I'll go ahead and use Lamar at this point to score against the, against the Browns. So give me Lamar to try to get another win. I'll take another quarterback. That means, Drew, for the second straight week, you're gonna have to pick a wide receiver or what do you got?
Drew Franklin
I considered Harold Fannin Jr. From Bowling Green, but then I looked at the odds. I looked at the odd no. And Joe cues the favorite. I'm not doing that again. So Browns I eliminated. I am going to go with the player I just mentioned that did nothing last week. There's no way Jamar Chase is going to be that quiet in week two. He had two catches last week in Cleveland. Burrow and Chase are having a big game. I'll take him as my wide receiver, get a touchdown.
Matt Jones
All right, so. So Drew uses Jamar Chase for his one time this year year. Billy uses Jonathan Taylor and I will use Lamar Jackson. So I get on a plane Friday. It is a 15 hour and 40 minute flight to Johannesburg, South Africa and then I will be joining you all on Sunday for week two after the, after the afternoon games. Guys, I look forward to it.
Drew Franklin
Looking forward to it too. I'm sure we'll won't have any technical difficulties at all.
Brown Spider
None.
Matt Jones
Sure. None.
Drew Franklin
I'm hoping there's like elephants walking around behind you on the screen while we're talking to you also.
Matt Jones
Yeah, well, I'm gonna be, I think I'm gonna be in the city that day, so I don't expect to see. I mean there'll be real problems if I see elephants that day, but when we go out into the the reserve in a couple weeks, it should be that there's a possibility of that. Thank you again, everybody. Drew: "I just did it. It's pretty cool. I just did it." (10:52)
Billy R Sports rounds up the week's key NFL headlines, sparking sharp commentary:

"She makes [sourdough] about 60% of the time, which they think was a hint that she was going to do Super Bowl 60." (Matt, 16:58)
Drew: "If this were anyone else, I'd say this is stupid. But she's big on numerology... I kind of believe she's dropping another hint there." (17:17)

"I have a friend that's banned from Toronto Blue Jay games... How do you pull this off?" (Drew and Matt, 18:50)
"He had six receptions for 33 yards... only six snaps on defense. How many snaps do you think he could actually get?" (Matt, 21:38)
"It's a really bad look... Every football team needs a director of common sense on the sideline." (Matt, 24:09)
Drew: "It's not just him. You have a whole booth... How did no one in a Titans headset go 'hey, that's a catch'?" (25:44)
"Is there a book that's like—spit $57,000... How do we calculate what that wad of spit cost?" (Drew, 27:14)
Matt: "Each piece of spittle is worth $16,300 and we're going to get to 50—three and a half spittles." (27:35)
