Josh
Hello, Finney. Your dad dead is just a word, Mr. Grabber.
Desi Perkins
She came to me in my dream.
Josh
What do you think happens when you die in a dream? It's time to find out. Ethan Hawke. I'm not afraid of you. You should be.
Stephen
Blackron2 Guys, how we doing? How we feeling? Let's talk about it. Because what I want to talk about is a little app called SE Se. The number one ready ticketing app on the App Store. Say it with me now.
Josh
Number one ticket store. Guys.
Stephen
70,000 live events. 28 million downloads. SeatGeek is the place to be if you're looking for sporting events. Live events, night events, theatrical events. Theatrical events. The events that you're looking for, they're on seatgeek. And they're here to hook you up. And we are here to hook you up. We'll hook him up. Dude, say something.
Josh
All you got to put is when you check out, there's a little spot that you can type in. La platica 10. That's right. And immediately get 10 off your ticketing purchase. Just like that. And remember, it's an easy app. It even shows you where you're going to sit. Green dot means good. Red dot means it's all right. You can still buy it, but it means all right. Green dot means good. Remember that. La Platica is hooking you up.
Stephen
That's right, baby. Guys, use the code. Get hooked up. Enjoy yourself. Live a little. Come on, man. Man, there's that thing you wanted to do. We're here to make sure it happens for you.
Josh
Do it. Go on that date night.
Stephen
Let's go.
Josh
You ready, guys?
Stephen
Hope you guys enjoy this episode. We'll see you guys in 12.4 segundos. I'm gonna use it.
Josh
Let me be honest. Every guest is a privilege.
Stephen
Do we want to go there?
Josh
Yeah, Jolly. Cause I'm on a podcast with Josh Labor. Hell yeah. You have too.
Stephen
Ladies and gentlemen, See the fly. Let me just tell you.
Desi Perkins
This is La Platica episode 215 with Desi Perkins.
Stephen
Wow. I love a good slate, man.
Josh
Wow. I said it before. And this is La Platica history. Yeah. With not just the one and only, but. Oh, somebody I grew up with.
Desi Perkins
We grew up together.
Josh
We grew up together. Yeah. And you guys aren't saying right now, but Stephen Perkins is also.
Stephen
Oh, he in the building.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. Daddy.
Josh
Daddy. He literally. Daddy. I. This. This video is sponsored by SE Number one rated ticketing app on the App Store. Yes, sir. And that's only according to. To the whole world. So shout out to the homies back at se. Today on the show, we have a longtime friend, someone I grew up with, someone I've traveled the world with, actually. We sure have a multi brand power. Latina businesswoman, amazing mother, amazing friend, amazing daughter. Desi Perkins in the flash. There she is.
Stephen
By the way, Desi. He's never done that before. Put together. You have not, not. Not that elaborate.
Josh
Okay. For a. For a long time, friend. I had you. Yeah. It's. It's almost like I respect you. You know what I mean? It's not that I don't respect others. Whoa, dude. Yeah, I buried. Yeah, that's gonna get close, that one. Yeah, whatever. Yeah, I know. I had to. Yeah, I had to. We're very excited to have you. Like I said, longtime friend, somebody. We were just talking about it right before we hit record. It's like, did we kind of grow up with each other? We kind of did. Right. In a sort of era, I mean, and we still obviously love each other and we know, we. We know each other, and I think we did.
Stephen
What's the. What's the year that you guys met? What's the.
Josh
What's the origin story, man, from the beginning.
Desi Perkins
The beginning of social media, where dinosaurs.
Josh
Was that like 15, 16, 2016. Yeah.
Stephen
Is that when you had started?
Desi Perkins
I started in 2012. My first YouTube upload.
Stephen
Wow. What was the video?
Desi Perkins
It was a get ready with me. It was very formal, no person, just very, like straight to.
Stephen
Straight to the point.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. And it had like that and like, really bad lighting.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. But that's how we started. And we kind of navigated growing on social media together and what that meant and working with brands and, you know, it was the wild, wild west back then.
Josh
And it was like a. A group of. Of females and also a group of males that there was always just us. Right. For. For a while.
Desi Perkins
It'll never be that again. It was such a special thing that we could all. No matter like, how much time goes by, you know, all of us have, like, gone into our own paths in life, but, like, we'll always have those moments where it was just us and nobody else. Like, now there's so many influencers.
Josh
Oh, yeah.
Desi Perkins
I mean, there could be somebody with 20 million followers and you've never heard of them because there's so many people that are so popular.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
And at the time, it was just us. So every single brand trip was the same people. So we just kind of traveled the world together, grew up together, created that bond. Yeah.
Stephen
So I started Making comedy videos in 2010. Like YouTube.
Josh
So.
Stephen
But I had a different group of friends. I didn't know you guys, like, this group of people existed until I met Sevas in 2015. 2016.
Josh
Yeah. Yeah.
Stephen
And I met Karen and then I was like, oh, she's a beauty. Like, creator. What does that mean?
Desi Perkins
Like, you didn't know?
Josh
He was on the other side.
Stephen
I was on the other side of YouTube. Like the dark side.
Josh
Yeah.
Stephen
But that's how I got introduced to you, like through his wife. And then I started realizing that there's this other world of creators.
Josh
Yeah.
Stephen
Which was really cool. And that's how I got introduced to Mac Daddy and Desi and Karen and all these, like, other iconic, you know. Oh, geez.
Josh
Cuz, Josh was. He's. He was, he's still popping. But I mean, he was like, he was like uploading videos and like he, like, he knew he was going to get a million views each video. Like that. Right?
Stephen
It was different. Yeah, it was different.
Josh
It was different. You, you.
Stephen
You know this, right? Like, the algorithm, everything was just so different. It was, it was brand new.
Josh
Right.
Stephen
So it was almost like Tik Tok is now. Like the discoverability was a little easier.
Josh
You know what I mean?
Stephen
Like, yeah, the algorithm was just curated for people who are trying to make videos.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
But also it was a time where people were searching corre specific things. Whereas, like, it wasn't a time of scrolling. So it's like if you wanted super facts, a makeup look, you type in. It was like our Google and now people are just scrolling. So. Yeah, it was so different.
Stephen
I kind of use Tick Tock in that way, though. Cool restaurants in Chicago.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. Because I would like visuals.
Stephen
Me too.
Desi Perkins
I don't use Google as much anymore.
Stephen
No. At all. At all. I do chat, GBT and TikTok. Those are my two sources.
Josh
Yeah. Yeah. Well, Desi, I mean, honestly, thank you so much for being on the pod. We wanted to actually have her during the month of September for Latino Heritage. Hispanic Heritage Month. But obviously I.
Desi Perkins
But you guys were touring the world.
Josh
We. We were on some live shows and you know, obviously not only are you a businesswoman, but you're. You're a mother.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Stephen
Yeah.
Josh
So, like, you're busy, we're busy. But I'm super blessed to just have you on. I know since the beginning of time of La Plastica, everybody's been always asking, bring Desi on. Bring Desi on here.
Desi Perkins
So how come you just now ask me?
Josh
You know what? It's because I. I feel like, you're.
Stephen
Such a. I'm kind of curious, too. I'm like, yeah. Why?
Desi Perkins
We're like, wait a minute.
Josh
Hold on. I feel like you're such a woman of a high stature. Does that make. Is stature a word?
Stephen
Stature is a word, dude.
Josh
Did I use it correctly?
Stephen
Yes.
Josh
Okay. I feel like she's all, yeah, I am.
Desi Perkins
No, I said, yeah.
Stephen
Yes. She said yes, and yes.
Josh
She's such a woman of stature.
Stephen
Huh.
Josh
That I felt like finally it was.
Stephen
Time, you know, you're waiting for the perfect.
Josh
It was a perfect moment. Yeah. Imagine if I would have took her to the Shoebox studio.
Stephen
No, she's above the Shoebox.
Josh
Yeah. I didn't want to take her to my house either, where I used to record either. You know what I mean? So, like, it just needed to be perfect. It was more out of respect for you.
Desi Perkins
Oh, that's nice. For your atmosphere, I would have gone to the Shoebox.
Stephen
Yeah. I mean, the Shoe Box was also a vibe, you know?
Josh
Yes. It was cool. It was cool. It was cool. But she probably would have said, no, no, no. Yeah. So now finally, like, that's why I asked. And I was like, you know what? Like, I'll just shoot my shot. I was like, you know, she doesn't really DM me anymore. So what? So hopefully she asks about that.
Stephen
I think.
Josh
I don't even think she remembers who we are anymore.
Stephen
So.
Josh
No, I'm joking. I. I hit her up, and she was like, yeah, of course. So it was really cool.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
And then she just sent me her assistant.
Desi Perkins
Oh. Because I can't schedule anything.
Stephen
Right.
Desi Perkins
I'm the worst. Like, I'm so spotty with responding and scheduling and, like, I have mom brain now. So when somebody writes me, I'll look at it and then I'll say, oh, shoot. I'm really. I'm going to respond later. I'll completely forget.
Stephen
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
And it's just because my brain is in 5 million places. So that's why I always, like, she. She schedules everything.
Josh
Of course.
Stephen
You got to delegate.
Josh
Yeah.
Stephen
With somebody as a schedule, as yourself. I had to be able to, like.
Josh
Yeah. I was like, perfect. Because she's like, oh, my God.
Desi Perkins
Wait, wait. But then you sent your person.
Stephen
Yeah. Then you were like, oh, you're down, Jess.
Desi Perkins
Then he goes, you know what? Jess is better at this than me.
Stephen
This is damn true.
Desi Perkins
So.
Josh
This is very true.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. Yeah.
Stephen
I was so excited to get you on. My girlfriend's a massive fan. And, like, I was like, oh, we're having desi. Perkins on Tomorrow. I was in bed. We had just gotten back from Dodgy Game. And she was like, are you kidding me?
Josh
Yeah.
Stephen
And she started throwing all your products that she owns to me in bed.
Josh
Yeah.
Stephen
And I'm like, this is all her. She's like, yeah, this is all her.
Josh
Yeah.
Stephen
And I was, this is incredible. You have a moisturizer. It's a Jamaica moisturize. Yes. So I have a brand called Tast, and we have a Haika floral.
Desi Perkins
I know. I love.
Stephen
She was like, you guys are. You're. You guys are going to connect. It's going to be amazing. And I was, this is incredible. I was. And I tasted it. I was like, does this actually tastes like he tasted? I wouldn't advise to do that, by the way. I was a little tipsy. I was like, let me see. But the. I loved it. It's amazing. Congratulations on all your success, by the way. You're absolutely crushing it. Not only are you an OG in. In this space, but you've continued to build a legacy around yourself and these brands that you've built. And being a mother and a wife, like, you've done an incredible job. Like, that's why I was so excited to get you on. Like, you are. You've, like, the epitome of a human being. Like, you've, like, you're achieving it. You're just constantly going. It's just so exciting.
Desi Perkins
I'm going to come on this podcast all the time. Anytime I'm feeling some type of way, I'm just going to be like, you know what they're doing over here?
Stephen
I know it's hard, right?
Josh
Like, how do you guys balance that?
Desi Perkins
I honestly just tell. I used to be like, oh, yeah, I b. No, there's no such thing as balance. There's always something that is not getting your full attention. So I've learned to accept that there's no such thing as balance. And I've. I've accepted that there are things that will take priority, and I'll make a list of priorities from top to bottom.
Josh
Okay.
Desi Perkins
And start there and whatever. I don't get to, like, there's another day, right? So it's just. It's just having to set priority lists, but it's never balanced. It's always just something or I'm feeling like I'm. Oh, this week's really busy. I feel like a terrible mom because I just. The kids miss me. I can tell because they're, you know, mommy, mommy, and it makes me feel terrible. So then I'll Ned, the next week, say no to everything. Every event and just spent. Pour myself into the kids. And then I'll feel bad because you're not pouring. Then my team is like, hey, like, you should probably go to this. This will be good. And I'm just. It's a cycle of that.
Josh
Yeah. Yeah.
Stephen
So I think that's incredible because I think everybody uses this, like, oh, it's all about, like, a balance and stuff, and that's not. That's not reality. You know what I mean? Like, that's just not the way it works. There's going to be seasons where you pour into other things.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Stephen
And then you got to just learn how to prioritize and make and, you.
Desi Perkins
Know, I think people might confuse balance with boundaries. Like, there needs to be boundaries.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
Always boundaries, but never balance for me.
Josh
Yeah. Yeah. And then something always crosses your way. There's always something going on.
Desi Perkins
And then you'll say, like, I'm not going to events. I need to focus on this. But then it's like, oh, your friends having an event, and you definitely want to go to support. So then it's like, you just, you.
Stephen
Know, you make it work.
Desi Perkins
You make it work.
Josh
Yeah. Speaking about, like, podcasts and stuff, I. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't. I haven't seen you on a podcast before.
Desi Perkins
It's because you don't watch my stuff anymore.
Josh
No, I do.
Stephen
You have. I was like, yeah, you don't watch your.
Desi Perkins
You know what? I, I, I'm not. No, you're right. I don't do a lot of podcasts a lot.
Josh
But you have.
Desi Perkins
No, I have. Yeah. I just don't do a lot.
Josh
So what's the vibe right now? Am I with it?
Desi Perkins
I like it so far. So far it's good. The minute I walked in, you guys.
Stephen
But we kind of said it like, beer, water.
Desi Perkins
No, they were like a drink, like a. You know. And then. Yeah, beer. To Stephen, by the way. Not to me.
Josh
Well, out of respect. Out of respect?
Stephen
Honestly. Yeah, bro. Sexist.
Josh
Not sexist.
Desi Perkins
And then I said, I'll take.
Josh
Yeah, you said it faster than Stephen. Yeah. I just didn't think that you were gonna drink in the morning or. It's technically not the morning.
Stephen
It's Monday, baby. Well, not. I mean, like, for the viewers.
Josh
For the viewers, it's Monday. Yeah. What else is new?
Stephen
Like, how are you?
Josh
Yeah, how are you?
Desi Perkins
Oh, my gosh.
Stephen
Like, outside of the business.
Josh
Yeah. Like, we got questions. Genuinely, how are you?
Desi Perkins
I am incredible.
Josh
Good.
Desi Perkins
I'm probably the happiest I've ever been in my entire life. I feel centered. I feel like I know who I am. I know what I. What makes me happy. I know what I value. I think, like, as you're growing up, you're kind of learning where your values lie.
Stephen
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
I know all of that now, so I feel so sure of myself. I think being a mother, at the end of the day, like, if everything were to disappear, as long as I just had my. My family and what I have at home, that's all that, like, I care about. Obviously, I care about driving force, my business and stuff, and that's not really what I mean, but just I know the value of my happiness lies there.
Josh
Yeah. My favorite stories when you post is when you're in Puerto Vallarta. Pv.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
My soul is the happiest.
Josh
I love that you guys. I love that you guys go there constantly.
Stephen
Is that your guys's spot?
Desi Perkins
Yeah, that's where we're from. My family's from there. So every year we go, and every year we're going longer and longer, and pretty soon, I'm just gonna stay there.
Josh
Yeah.
Stephen
Wow. Would you ever get a house out there? Yeah, I want to, like, a summer house.
Josh
That'd be sick.
Stephen
That would be so.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
No, but they love people. They go and, like, Stephen and then caballo and everything. Yes.
Desi Perkins
It's Mexicano.
Josh
Yeah. He's like, bro. He's going like this, by the way, Stephen, like, he. That was Mexican.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, he always says it. I mean, he loves. He makes the best carne asada.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
He's in charge every time, even in Mexico, with the family.
Josh
Really? That's a big deal.
Stephen
That's a huge.
Josh
That's a huge deal. Yeah. No, I love the rite of passage. I love that you guys go constantly. For me, it hits a little different because, like, I'm also from Jalisco, so the beach that we would go to is Vallarta.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
You know, so I grew up going to Vallarta. There's another little town there, too, and we'd always go there. So whenever you guys go, I'm like. It's like. It hits something different for me because I'm like, oh, that's so cool. Like, I was technically raised going there, and Puerto Vallarta is the.
Desi Perkins
It is.
Stephen
It's beautiful.
Desi Perkins
So fun.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
There's so much community. When we came back home last time, my son looked at me and he goes, mommy, I think we belong in Mexico.
Stephen
What?
Desi Perkins
Yeah. He was like, this is where we should be. And they want to be there always.
Stephen
Yeah.
Josh
Wow.
Desi Perkins
And so we love going. And every year we go for a little bit longer. A little bit longer.
Josh
Yeah. And the fact that you take your kids there and, you know, that's so.
Stephen
That's so adorable.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, they love it.
Stephen
I. Sorry. I. I just. Because I had a funny story and my mom's gonna love this. So my, I raised my single mom. She did everything to provide the best life for me. And I was so, like, infatuated with like, hip hop culture that I wanted to be from the hood. So I would, like, tell my mom, like, like, almost what your kids will say about Mexico. But I'm like, why don't we live in Compton? Like, what are we doing? Like, she was like, so pissed. She was like, what are you talking about?
Josh
Wow.
Stephen
Anyways, this reminded me. It's similar, but different.
Josh
You still want to live in Compton?
Stephen
I wanted to be raised in Compton, bro.
Josh
Yeah. That's cool, man.
Stephen
According to nwa, I guess.
Josh
No, it's. It's so amazing how I see your kids and they're just like on the beach. They're with your primos.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
You know, they're with a pig. Yeah, they're with a pig.
Desi Perkins
Walks a pig and his dogs on the beach every day.
Josh
Yeah. It's though. It's those moments that really kind of shape your son and your daughter. You know what I mean? Like, because I remember, like my. My mom would take me there was obviously just how all of us were raised. There wasn't too much money, you know, with our family. So I had an uncle who would. His job. He was a chauffeur. He was like a chauffeur, like a driver that would drive from Tijuana to Sinaloa and then from. I would get picked up and like, it was like a long ass, like, tour bus. And like, we would just go there. And I was just sitting there for like 20 hours, bro. Me and all my. And me and all my brothers and sisters, and we would just go because my mom couldn't afford plane tickets for all of us. So I would just be on a bus from Tijuana all the way to. It was called Tepic in over there in Nayarita. I'm sorry. And it's those moments that I remember that just. They always stick with you.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
So when I see your kids over there, I'm like, damn, this is gonna.
Stephen
Have a big impact, this.
Josh
Yeah, it's like, huge.
Desi Perkins
You don't forget all the birthday parties. Yes, but they'll always remember these trips. Yeah, it's a fact, because same like, my mom sent me. Like, I would be as early as 4 years old. I was going to Mexico alone on the flight, and my mom would send me for the summers to stay with my family. So I was just going for as long as I could remember growing up. And it's what I remember. And my memories are there. You know how when you watch a movie, that's your comfort movie?
Stephen
Oh, yeah.
Desi Perkins
I feel like that's what that is for me. It's like anytime I'm feeling like I need comfort being there, it's like I'm healed again. Like, I love going. And it's because of those memories I made as a kid. I just like to go back to that, revisit it.
Stephen
And you having that feeling is something you want to create for your kids as well. That's cool.
Desi Perkins
They love it.
Josh
Yeah.
Stephen
That's so cool. How old is your. Your son?
Desi Perkins
My son is a B5 this month.
Josh
Ain't that crazy? He's fire now.
Desi Perkins
5.
Stephen
Dude. Having a kid, does it trip you out? Like, I don't have any kids, but I could just imagine what it's like, like, I made you and you're just.
Desi Perkins
Here now when they start to act exactly like you and you see something that's you.
Stephen
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
Trips you out.
Josh
That's crazy.
Desi Perkins
Like, the way my son is so 50, Steven. 50 me.
Josh
Really?
Desi Perkins
Yeah. He's like, split down the middle. And then my daughter is, I'm gonna say 100 you. Maybe like 90 me and 10 somebody else, but she's very me. I don't know. She's. She's.
Stephen
Yeah, she's younger.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, she's two. She. Oh, she just turned three. Sorry. See what I mean?
Stephen
She's busy, guys.
Desi Perkins
Mom brain. No, she just turned three last month. And my son is gonna be five, so that's cool.
Stephen
So, yeah, so he's. She like having an older brother and having him, like, be around and protect in that age gap, I think is beautiful. That's gonna be so cool because he'll be in high school at the same.
Desi Perkins
Time and all that, and he'll have to protect. I'm always. Yeah, you gotta protect your sister.
Josh
Yes, yes, yes.
Desi Perkins
And she protects him right back. We were at the park, and this. This older boy was calling my son a baby. And he's like, you're a baby. And Harley goes, he's not a baby. He's my big brother with the finger like this.
Josh
No way.
Desi Perkins
And I said, where'd she get that from this, like, the finger thing. And then we were at a l' Oreal brand event recently, and this guy was, like, being a dick to his girlfriend. And I was so upset that I approached him and I was like, don't be a fucking. I went off.
Josh
Wait, wait, you did that at a l' Oreal event?
Desi Perkins
I did. It was so.
Stephen
Okay, were they, like, creators? Like, what was there?
Josh
Steven, Were you there?
Desi Perkins
He was there.
Josh
No way.
Stephen
And were you like, this is the.
Josh
First time you ever done this at a brand event?
Desi Perkins
Okay, so listen, this is an amazing.
Stephen
Story, by the way.
Desi Perkins
This girl comes up to Stephen and I. We're having a drink, and she goes, oh, do you mind taking a photo of me and my boyfriend? And of course, Stephen. If you know one thing about Stephen, he'll do. Bend over backwards to get you a good photo.
Josh
Yes.
Desi Perkins
And so he was like, yeah, of course.
Josh
I bent over backwards many times for Stephen, for Steven. I love that. I love that. For. Continue.
Desi Perkins
I'm glad. Okay. I was.
Josh
Why you shy all of a sudden?
Desi Perkins
You're looking at.
Josh
You're shy. Another shot.
Desi Perkins
Anyways, so this. She asked for a picture. We get the. Like, her. Her phone to take the photo, and the minute we put the camera up, her man gets so rude, and he pretends to take a phone call.
Josh
What?
Desi Perkins
And the phone. I saw the phone, and there was nobody. There was. It was the home. And he, like, walked away, and he kind of just brushed her off, and her face looked so sad. I'm talking, like, just embarrassed. Yeah, she. It upset me because she looked like. I don't know how to explain it. But her friend then had said, oh, well, you know, we've been trying to get a photo with him all night, and he's been doing that. He's been just, like, finding reasons to walk away. So then I got really upset, and I was like, okay. So when I saw him again, I went up to him and I was like, what was that about? And he goes, oh, I had a phone call. I was like, no, you didn't.
Josh
Dang. Straight up.
Desi Perkins
And he was like, I did. And I said, actually, no, I saw your phone. You weren't on the phone with anyone. And everyone else saw your phone, too, so you're lying. And I was like, that girl is way too cute for you to be treating her like that. And I said, don't be a fucking asshole. And he's like, you did the little pointing, and I did the pointing. And Steven was filming it. I didn't know from a distance. Somebody went up to Steven and was like, aren't you kind of nervous that she's going up to this guy and talking to him like that? And he goes, yeah, I'm nervous for him.
Josh
Wow.
Desi Perkins
Anyways, come to find out this guy was an actor and so was the girl, and they were purposely trying to make the crowd believe that he was an asshole because it was part of a skit that they did on the stage later.
Stephen
Wait, wait, what?
Desi Perkins
Yeah, it was a. It was like a show. It was, like, part of.
Stephen
So it was all bit.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, so it was all a bit. But I. Obviously, none of us had any idea. So they had been doing that to people all night and to get a reaction. To get. No, I guess it wasn't even, like, being recorded.
Stephen
It was just more for, like.
Desi Perkins
No. In the moment. So that when he became an. For the heckling part of the show, people would be like, oh, yeah, that guy's been an asshole all night.
Stephen
So she also was in on it as well.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. Yeah. She 100 convinced me with the face.
Josh
That's not cool, dude.
Desi Perkins
Honestly, it was. It was a little, like, I was shocked. I was a little shocked and then also embarrassed later because when I found out it was a bit social experiment. Wait.
Josh
Yeah, you're part of a social experiment.
Desi Perkins
So. But the finger.
Stephen
But. But you know what? Nonetheless, it kind of, like, shows your character. Yeah. Like, you defended this girl, like, in that moment of, like, you stood up for her, like, so I think, like, you did the right thing.
Josh
Yeah.
Stephen
Even though it's like, they are. That's weird.
Desi Perkins
I said, you know that. What would you do? I was like, well, at least we all know that I'd be doing.
Josh
Yeah. Which is great. Which is great. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. That's crazy. At a brand event.
Desi Perkins
I had never. I had never experienced anything like that at a brand event.
Stephen
And have you ever. So you've never, like, approached. Have you ever approached somebody like that? Like, and then I guess, like, I.
Desi Perkins
Feel like if I ever see someone treating somebody bad and the person is defenseless, I can't help it. Yeah, but, like, she would have stuck up for herself. I wouldn't have said, of course.
Stephen
Of course not. Your place, right?
Josh
Yeah. Has Desi Perkins ever got into a fight? Like a fist fight? Damn.
Desi Perkins
Or Desiree Desi Perkins? Absolutely not.
Stephen
Not.
Desi Perkins
There was a time they used to call me the Snatcher.
Josh
Oh, yeah. Damn.
Stephen
A snatcher.
Desi Perkins
I was wild. Back in the days, you can't get in fights anymore.
Josh
Did you see that, too?
Desi Perkins
See, he's seen It.
Stephen
How long have you guys been together?
Josh
Forever.
Desi Perkins
16 year.
Josh
Wow.
Desi Perkins
I think I said it, like.
Josh
And I think that's something that, like, me and Karen, we always, like, love them because they've been with each other, like, for such a long time that me and Karen related to, like, you.
Stephen
Guys are 12 years, 13 years.
Josh
Nah, 10. Almost 50. Oh, I don't know. I'm stupid. So I got with her in 2010.
Stephen
Yeah. 15 years, bro.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
Wait, so we've been together longer then. I can't do math either.
Josh
So when did you guys get together? What year? Because I know you guys used to celebrate your. When we got together.
Desi Perkins
No, we didn't.
Josh
Never.
Desi Perkins
I don't think so. We can barely celebrate our anniversary.
Josh
Dating. The dating anniversary.
Stephen
Yeah, the dating animation.
Desi Perkins
We met in 2006, and we started dating summer of 2000.
Josh
2006.
Stephen
High school. Is this high school?
Josh
What the. I was like, Bro, 2006.
Desi Perkins
I know.
Josh
I was like, 15. Yeah.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
Wow.
Desi Perkins
So he's seen me and I've seen him through all our phases.
Josh
Wow.
Stephen
That's a lot of change. Like, that's a lot of.
Josh
Yeah. Growth. That's all the change.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
It's not crazy.
Josh
Wow. That's crazy.
Stephen
She's been more in your life than her not being in your life.
Josh
Yes.
Stephen
As a human.
Josh
Yeah. And it just keeps getting longer. Now pause. That's actually really beautiful.
Stephen
That is crazy.
Josh
Yeah, it's. It's. It's. It's different when you hear from somebody else, because I obviously grew up with Karen, too, but when somebody else says it, it's like, I really think about, like, damn.
Desi Perkins
Then you think about your own relationship.
Josh
Like, oh, wait, you guys went through it all. Overdrafts, not paying bills.
Desi Perkins
Oh, yeah.
Stephen
Yeah. What's the. What's the secret?
Desi Perkins
Stamps.
Josh
Yeah. What's the secret? How do you guys still spark it up?
Desi Perkins
What's the secret?
Josh
Food stamps.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
Wow.
Desi Perkins
There was a time.
Stephen
I love that.
Josh
I love that. What's the spark?
Desi Perkins
The secret. I mean, there's so many things. There's. Okay, so Stephen and I have date nights every Friday. No exceptions.
Josh
Yeah, no exceptions. Wow. I love that.
Desi Perkins
There's, like, very rarely will there be something that's like, okay, this is. It has to be, like, once in a lifetime something. But other than that, every Friday night, we make plans to do something together. No kids, just him and I. So that.
Josh
I love how you guys pick Fridays, too, too.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
Friday is always intentional cracking. There's always something on a Friday night.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. Like, we go Out. We'll do, like, pottery making. Just fun things. We have hobbies together and, like, separate, which is nice. We talk. We make sure we communicate all the stuff that you should be doing. But I think Friday nights is really keeping it for us. But I also think that I've loved him more since having kids with him.
Josh
So you look at him level unlocked.
Desi Perkins
Yes.
Josh
Wow.
Desi Perkins
But it's because he's a really great father and he's a great husband. So when I see him doing these things with the kids, I'm like, damn, I love that man. Like, I love him more after kids. I'm just like, I feel like you.
Josh
Guys want to make out right now.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
Yeah.
Stephen
I'm like, I feel like they want.
Josh
To make out right now.
Desi Perkins
No. That's the one thing. I'm like, I'm so blessed because I truly feel like, damn, there's no other person.
Josh
Yeah. Wow. That's incredible. What a feeling.
Stephen
And how lucky are you? Like, how. That's insane. Yeah. Because not everybody has this feeling.
Desi Perkins
I think. I'm not luck. I. That's the one thing I'm like. I feel so lucky to have. To have that relationship, you know? Of course. It gets on my nerves sometimes. I get on his nerves.
Stephen
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
But it's healthy.
Josh
Yeah. You have.
Stephen
It's kind of needed.
Desi Perkins
Like, sometimes you just have a little bicker moment, you know?
Josh
Yeah. Yeah. All the time. All the time. Duh. You. This is the guy that you. You grew up with. Of course you're gonna bicker.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
What was your guys's first date? Do you remember that?
Desi Perkins
Yeah. We snuck into a movie, and you guys.
Josh
Hold on.
Desi Perkins
We went to Islands Island Burgers. Yes.
Josh
Fire. Fire.
Stephen
And a great first date.
Josh
The best island burger is the one.
Stephen
In Long beach with the pineapple.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
Is that the one you got?
Stephen
It's so good.
Josh
They have really good ranch.
Desi Perkins
Listen, their cheese fries go off, too.
Stephen
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
As well. But we went to Islands. We split a burger. This is how young we were. We like burger. And then we went to a movie, and we snuck into the movie theater, and we stole the Superman poster from the movie.
Stephen
No way.
Josh
What?
Stephen
That you guys still have.
Desi Perkins
And then.
Josh
That's incredible, by the way.
Stephen
Do you guys do this? Is this, like, a thing you guys do?
Desi Perkins
No, we don't see all under normal. This was like. We were so. I don't even know why we did it, because I think the poster looked like him. I really don't know why we did that. And then we, like, held it on top of the car. All the way home. Because it's that big.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
And then it was like the.
Stephen
The cardboard one.
Desi Perkins
Like, Steven's mom still has it in her garage.
Stephen
No way. I shouldn't admit this, but I like, like to take, like, cups from restaurants. That's why I was asking, like, do you guys do this because I was like, me. I do.
Desi Perkins
Is there a room full of thieves?
Josh
Wow, that's good.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. And then we, like, parked in front of my house and made out for like, a few hours.
Stephen
Wow.
Josh
That was my question. You guys met on the first date.
Stephen
Yeah, but this is. This is high school, right?
Desi Perkins
So this is. I was. No, no, this is the year after high school. So, like, this is the summer that I graduated.
Josh
Oh, okay.
Stephen
Okay, okay, okay.
Desi Perkins
But don't do the math too hard.
Josh
I was doing it right now.
Stephen
For me, it was more like timeline. Like, like where you're at in your life. Like, you know what I mean?
Josh
No, I was like, comparing your timeline to mine because you guys. But if you said you graduated already. Okay.
Desi Perkins
I think you're a little younger than me probably.
Josh
I look older, though.
Stephen
Yeah.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
I don't know.
Stephen
Do you need to take a break or anything?
Desi Perkins
No.
Josh
Okay.
Desi Perkins
Another beer?
Josh
Yeah. Get her another beer. No, actually, no.
Desi Perkins
We're gonna do a shot.
Josh
You want to do a shot?
Stephen
And you're all taste. I do that, bro. Thank you for rapping, man.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
Do we have a chaser? That's the thing.
Stephen
Yes.
Josh
Can we also invite you? What are you guys doing November Eigth?
Desi Perkins
I have no idea.
Josh
Yeah, that's a stupid question.
Stephen
At 5pm what are you doing then?
Josh
Yeah, we're doing a live show in Riverside.
Stephen
Oh, yes.
Josh
So I'd like you. I'll send you a link so you can buy the tickets.
Desi Perkins
Okay, I'll buy them.
Josh
No, of course.
Stephen
Do you know what you're talking to, bro? She'll buy the whole venue, bro.
Desi Perkins
I grew up in the South Bay, like Hawthorne. Oh, nice area.
Josh
You know, it's crazy. You never meet people that grow up.
Stephen
By the South Bay and then, like, do the influencer, like, you know, go into that space.
Josh
And when you meet people that grow up in, like, the South Bay area, they always kind of present to you and they, they, they. They let you realize how cool the South Bay is.
Desi Perkins
The South Bay is amazing.
Josh
It's amazing.
Desi Perkins
I started in Hawthorne, then most of my. Then I. Rest of my life was in Lawndale, which I don't know if you know that. Yeah. So I love it. I love it there. I actually miss It. I miss living in a predominantly, like, Hispanic neighborhood.
Stephen
For sure.
Desi Perkins
I don't get the elote carts anymore.
Stephen
I know.
Desi Perkins
I don't hear the. Like. I miss that.
Josh
We got the fruit. The fruit ladies on material.
Stephen
We do. We do.
Desi Perkins
I go to them all the time.
Stephen
So Desi. For myself, I'm very. I'm very intrigued on, like, how you kind of got your start. Can I. Can I just kind of hear the story? I'm sorry if you've said it multiple times, but I'm very intrigued.
Desi Perkins
No, it was all. It's a. It was a fun accident, basically. I've always been into art and painting and things like that, and I wasn't a creative makeup person. I did love to do my own makeup, but nothing, you know, like YouTube or anything. And one day, Steven got a job doing photography at a bar, and it was Halloween time, and they said he needed to have a costume of something of some sort. So he was like, I don't have a costume. And I said, oh, I saw this YouTube video. I think I could probably replicate whatever they did on your face. Like some special effects makeup.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
And because I was always painting, I felt like it can't be much different. And I did it that night, and it ended up turning out really good. I mean, now looking back, it could have been. Could have been better, but at the time, it was good. And everyone was like, oh, did you get this professionally done? I'd been a cocktail server forever. I was. I hated my job. So.
Josh
Yeah. Really? I didn't know that.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. Six years. And when they asked who did it, he was like, oh, my girlfriend did it. And they said, do you do this professionally? And I was like, yes, of course I do. So I started doing people's faces out of my house for 50 bucks a face. It was like, special effects, whatever they wanted. I was like, I didn't have a kit or anything. I was just, like, making it work. And then somebody was like, do you do makeup for television? And I said, yeah, as a matter.
Josh
Of fact, I do always say yes.
Desi Perkins
Next thing you know, I'm on an ABC show with Tim Gunn and I'm doing makeup on set. I have no fucking idea what I'm doing. Now. Looking back, I'm. Wow. That was actually kind of crazy of me to say yes, because television makeup is much different.
Stephen
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
And no, but I. I made it work. And I just kind of kept saying yes. Moving forward, I. I started posting on Instagram. Stephen forced me to. He was like, you need to. It's so Cool. Started posting my makeup looks. And Vegas Nay, who was one of the top makeup influencers. First one to, like, really be a. Yeah, yeah.
Josh
I remember.
Desi Perkins
Curator of, like, artists. She reposted me. And I'll never forget the day that my phone. I had notifications on, honey, because I was. I wasn't, like, an influencer. My phone started going, like, it wouldn't stop liking commenting. It was phenomenal. Like, nothing like that will ever happen now. A repost just doesn't have that much power. But it was insane. I grew thousands of followers overnight, and then people asked me to start YouTube and I just said yes, and I ended up here.
Stephen
Have you ever connected with that person?
Desi Perkins
Yes. I still talk to her to this day, and I always bring her up because I'll never forget that moment.
Stephen
Like, that's so crazy.
Josh
Yeah, yeah. There was always. Wasn't there always, like. Well, till this day. But back then, they were more impactful. There were always, like, Instagram accounts that would just repost, but it would have so much following.
Stephen
Yeah.
Josh
That if you get reposted.
Stephen
Shoot you up.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
That was the way to grow.
Josh
Yeah. Well, let's take a shot.
Desi Perkins
You.
Josh
You know something?
Stephen
You call that an accidental. What did you say? You just said something.
Josh
I thought it was so, like, poetic.
Desi Perkins
Like a happy accident. I don't know.
Stephen
Happy accident.
Josh
No, it wasn't. That's what I wanted to.
Stephen
Cheers to.
Josh
Okay.
Desi Perkins
Cheers to that.
Josh
Cheers to that. But no, cheers to you being a cocktail server for six years.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. Cheers.
Josh
Let's go. Cheers. Cheers to that.
Desi Perkins
All right.
Stephen
Are we all okay?
Josh
I think so. All right.
Stephen
Are we here?
Desi Perkins
I feel great.
Stephen
Yeah, we're live.
Josh
Hey, headphones. More immersed, right?
Stephen
Yeah, I definitely.
Josh
I can turn it down or turn it up, too. I have my. All the way up.
Desi Perkins
Oh, it's nice. I like it.
Josh
Okay, this is good. Imagine if you always, like, you heard everything like.
Stephen
Like this. That would be kind of badass. I feel like they're trying to do that now with, like, the AirPods. Like, they're even having them be able to translate for you if you're talking with somebody with a different name.
Desi Perkins
I can't wait to try that.
Stephen
That's so cool.
Josh
Does Desi Perkins use chat? G. Don't lie.
Desi Perkins
She may have dabbled. She may have dabbled.
Stephen
I feel like that you have to.
Josh
Right.
Stephen
Adapt or die.
Josh
It's, like, sucks, but yeah, it's a great app.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
It does everything. And the way it talks to you and the way.
Desi Perkins
What would happen if your. Your chat GPT Responses got leaked or your problem.
Stephen
Oh, my God. I'll be.
Josh
I wouldn't be. I wouldn't be too. But I would be judged. I wouldn't be like, too. But yeah, I'd be judged for sure.
Desi Perkins
I think everyone would, though.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
That's the thing is that chat knows a little too much about everyone.
Stephen
It's because I'm very vulnerable with my. With my chat.
Josh
Are you?
Stephen
Yes, dude.
Josh
Everything I talk, you know, he talks to the. His chat GPT, like, just for fun.
Desi Perkins
A lot of people do that.
Stephen
Yeah, dude. I do even, like, rehearsing stuff. If I have a presentation or something, I will go through it with chat and he'll, like, give me feedback and notes and. And talks to me.
Josh
Wow.
Stephen
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
It's kind of scary to think that, like, our children will be growing up with virtual, like. Yeah, like AI.
Josh
Yeah. Yeah.
Stephen
Like, it's not.
Desi Perkins
There's like, AI artists being signed AI actresses.
Josh
Yeah, there's.
Desi Perkins
I might just be AI from now. I'm tired.
Josh
Yeah. No, I would, like, I would just.
Desi Perkins
Make myself an AI avatar. And you can be an AI influencer.
Josh
Yeah, there's.
Stephen
That's kind of crazy.
Josh
It'd be easier.
Stephen
Like, you start off as a.
Josh
Like you.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. And I'll just stay.
Stephen
Me transition into an.
Josh
That.
Desi Perkins
No.
Josh
Okay.
Desi Perkins
That way, like, I can stop going to my Botox appointments and like.
Stephen
Yeah, the AI handles.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. I don't. I don't even need to, like, get glam. I could just.
Stephen
How far are we away from that? Like, two weeks.
Josh
Not. Not. Not far at all.
Stephen
Not far at all.
Josh
Not far at all. Desi. You know, I've known Desi Perkins for such a long time. Me and my wife, we've traveled the world. Like I said. I want to know what has been your favorite brand trip? There's been some pretty epic ones.
Stephen
Are those still a thing, by the way?
Desi Perkins
Yeah, they are. Yeah. It's just so different now, though, because.
Josh
Different, Right.
Desi Perkins
Again, like, they cycle out different types of influencers, you know, so it's always different groups. But, like, back then, it was just.
Josh
Just us. And can I say something real quick before you say that there will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever be a group like us, first of all. And second, any lead plus one group.
Desi Perkins
An elite plus one group.
Josh
You guys were the carry two DSLR cameras on us.
Desi Perkins
Everyone just does iPhone now and, like, mad editing.
Josh
Like drones on some laptops. Crazy.
Desi Perkins
All kinds of cameras.
Josh
We would make like Transformers the movie.
Desi Perkins
Yes.
Stephen
On these trips.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. There was trailers to our vlogs. That were like.
Josh
Yes, yes. It was epic. I know you guys can't hear me right now. No, we can hear you. This guy ziplined across a jungle with all of his backpack.
Stephen
To get the shot.
Josh
It was a Louis Vuitton backpack, too.
Desi Perkins
Oh, my God.
Josh
But you're also looking at one of probably the best. If the Emmys had a plus one award. That's you, bro. Honestly. Damn.
Stephen
That's. You know what?
Desi Perkins
This is true.
Stephen
I've never heard you say anything like that.
Josh
But, yeah, Stephen is one of the guys that would probably show the other + ones how to do shit.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, he's always.
Josh
Honestly, he's always been like.
Desi Perkins
He always likes to help people.
Josh
Yeah. Like, he, like, look at. In another emotion. In another. In another world. In another world. Yeah. He would work at Geek Squad or Apple. The store, I think with me.
Desi Perkins
Actually, he's actually worked there.
Josh
Yeah. One of my dreams is to work at the Apple Store when I retire. Or like. Or like a Geek Squad at Best Buy. That makes sense.
Stephen
Yeah.
Josh
No, but Steven always had the cool gadget.
Stephen
No way. He put you on game.
Josh
He flew the drone better than anybody.
Stephen
Wow.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
Him and John actually used to. Him and John, after that moment, that era, like Stephen and John would set up studios for big brands, like all the makeup brands.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
To have the lane.
Josh
Isn't that crazy?
Stephen
That's so cool. Ahead of the curve.
Josh
Ahead of the curve.
Desi Perkins
It was a time.
Josh
But yes.
Desi Perkins
My favorite brand trip, I have to say, was Bora Bora Tart.
Josh
Tart.
Desi Perkins
The early day trips.
Josh
Yeah, that was a great trip, especially because we.
Stephen
What was the brand, if you don't mind?
Josh
Tart. Oh, cosmetics.
Desi Perkins
It was so fun. It was so fun. Like, sometimes old Snapchats that I used to post pop up and I'm like.
Josh
Oh, oh, I said that.
Desi Perkins
I did that. I said that because, like, I think over time, being online, you really start to, like, like censor yourself more, but more and more. Polish is like, a really nice way to put it, but I would say, like, retract. And it's because, you know, people like to pick apart little things more and more and more. And there's this. I don't know what the name of it is, but it's like where you expect someone online to be better than you even are in person. Like, in your own life.
Stephen
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
And so it starts to get, like. You start to kind of, like, pull back. And I think I feel like that happened over the years, but those early years, we were just. Yeah, we're just living Posting in real time.
Josh
Like, we would be drunk.
Desi Perkins
Like, snapping whatever we're doing and sending that. And no. No worries. No, like, oh, is this. Do you. Is this okay to post Brand approved. There was no censorship at all.
Stephen
We were just living also kind of amazing.
Josh
Yeah. Not thinking about, like, what. What a time, right? How blessed were we? So are we, bro. You would wake up. There's like, an itinerary. You go to the lunch or the little event that they had. I remember one time we came back to our room after, like, a dinner or something. Everybody got drones. Like, the new top of the line drone. 40 minutes after. All you hear is.
Desi Perkins
And the hotel came to our door and was like, you guys can't do that.
Josh
All of our bros.
Stephen
Just playing, like, drone wars.
Josh
Yeah, that's it.
Desi Perkins
Like, some of us didn't even know how to fly drones. So it's just, like, drunk drones everywhere. Epic.
Josh
Yeah. What a group.
Desi Perkins
And we just, like, got to live it together. And then you got your drone stuck on a roof in Paris, and we.
Josh
Had to go, oh, my God, you guys.
Desi Perkins
Do you remember that?
Josh
And you had to, like, remember we had to pay that lady 300 something. She. Me, bro.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
She knew that I wanted it. And she was like, like, all right, I' ma. This guy real quick. It was in the middle of Paris, bro.
Desi Perkins
I remember.
Josh
Not open at all.
Desi Perkins
She was like, yeah.
Josh
She's like, what the. I was like, I'm trying to. I'm trying here. I'm trying here. I should have had Stephen fly it. I knew it. I knew it.
Desi Perkins
That was such a fun day, though, because we really went on an adventure to find your.
Josh
Wasn't that one of the trips? We were in Paris for, like, 15 days.
Desi Perkins
We were there with Kerastas.
Josh
Oh, my God. I. I always. Yes. Carousels. I always tell this story. And you probably remember people always ask me, is it true that French people are rude? And I said, you know what? My first trip, I thought that. Because when we were there for that many days. I've been to Paris so many times after that already, and I love Paris. People are great. But that first time. Do you remember when that. And you went off. Now the finger came back. The finger came back. Remember when we all were at that restaurant?
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
And then you went off on the gu. Because, bro, we're all. I mean, we're still young and beautiful.
Stephen
Facts.
Josh
But we were younger. And we go to this restaurant, just go have some appetizers and some. And some beers, bro. Some drinks.
Desi Perkins
We ordered so many appetizers.
Josh
So many drinks just to kill time, I think. Right.
Desi Perkins
We had a show, the Moulin Rouge, that we were going to.
Josh
So we're just trying, like, almost like a little pregame. Yeah. And it was like, I don't know, like, 10 of us, eight of us. I don't. I forgot.
Desi Perkins
It was a big.
Josh
I know. It. It cemented in my head that you were there because you had the finger.
Desi Perkins
The finger. He was. He basically went off on us, and there was the waiter. Yeah.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
He was so irritated that we weren't ordering entrees. And I think culturally, there was, like, a. A disconnect.
Stephen
I get you.
Desi Perkins
Because we here go out for, like. But there. I guess it's considered rude.
Stephen
Oh, wow. Yeah.
Desi Perkins
Well. Which is. You know. But he could have just said, hey, like. Like, yeah, he could have told us, but instead, he was so rude and started talking crazy to us.
Josh
And, like, he said. He. I remember, Remember. I remember he said. He said, next time you come tell me, tell me what you're gonna do so I don't have to set up the table, basically.
Stephen
He said that for him?
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
No, I mean, I don't know, but.
Desi Perkins
It'S hard to say.
Josh
Yeah, he was very rude, and he basically said, like, why did I set up the table for you guys then?
Desi Perkins
Yeah, he was really upset.
Josh
I'm like, like, bitch, we're still drinking and eating. Like, what's the big deal? You know, we're not used to that. I don't know what his deal was.
Desi Perkins
And then I remember I just told him, I said, look, if there's a cultural difference, like, you could have just said that. Like, this is not. Like, this is. We would have been okay with that. Like.
Josh
But, yeah.
Stephen
Interesting. Interesting. So it's like, it's custom to, like, order apps and then immediately entrees, and that's how you.
Josh
I guess.
Desi Perkins
I think the point is that if there's cultural differences everywhere, so, like, if you don't know what they are.
Josh
Exactly.
Desi Perkins
Honestly, I'm sure Americans, we are probably pretty annoying. So, like, we. You know, I'm not going to say he was.
Josh
He was in a mood, though.
Desi Perkins
He was.
Josh
That guy.
Desi Perkins
No, that was. That was. Honestly, the way he talked to us was crazy.
Josh
Yeah. Don't ever talk to anybody.
Desi Perkins
Like, it's also. It's like, you're working in such a. The most touristy place ever.
Josh
I have a core memory that Desi went off on that phone.
Desi Perkins
I.
Stephen
And what did he say?
Desi Perkins
I will stand up for myself.
Josh
He kind of got, like, a little like, oh, shit.
Desi Perkins
No, he apologized.
Josh
Yeah, you did. You went off on him. You're being rated, rated E for everyone right now. But you went off on them like PG13 style.
Desi Perkins
It was PG13.
Josh
Yeah, I went off on the guy.
Desi Perkins
At the L' Oreal Rated R, but this guy was PG13.
Josh
Oh, really?
Desi Perkins
Because I was a server too, so, like, I get it. But also it's like, yeah, you know.
Josh
Yeah, he was, he basically said, like, I just did this table for you guys because, you know, they got the napkins. And I'm like, they're just napkins, but.
Desi Perkins
We also need napkins for appetizers. It's not a lot of food.
Josh
Yeah, we ordered drinks and food. Like, chill out, bro. He's lucky me and Steven didn't jump his ass for 13 seconds.
Desi Perkins
No, y' all let me go in the fire.
Josh
Yeah, you guys were gone.
Stephen
You got that fingers.
Josh
That's crazy, bro. That was a trip that we were in Paris for like 14 days.
Stephen
I, I, so you have two businesses that you run. Can. What's the, what's the whole origin story of that? Like, how did you get into these businesses? Like, you do a phenomenal job of being a businesswoman, and you, the transition is kind of like, impressive. So what, what was that like?
Desi Perkins
So I started out signing with ipsy, if you guys know. That's. It was like, at the time, they hired influencers to create videos for them. And so that's kind of where I started, really getting like a steady paycheck, which was awesome. And then from there, they actually had beauty completely carved out of my contracts. I couldn't do anything. I couldn't take any jobs out in beauty. So then I was approached by an eyewear company that was like, hey, we'd love to do a collaboration with you. Like maybe four designs. It'll be a three month collab. And then, you know, since it was eyewear, I was able to do it. So I was super excited. And I remember asking them, okay, do you mind if I design them personally? Because at first they had just put, like, innovation that they already had in the pipeline.
Stephen
Just kind of pick, you could pick.
Desi Perkins
And choose and, like change colors, which is really normal. That's pretty standard. And then I said, you know, I just, I have this idea in my mind. I would love to just design it. And they said, oh, yeah, absolutely. So I ended up designing this aviator and I kind of sketched it out. And what Steven and I do really well together is I'm very creative and he's very logistics so that's why I think it works so well. And so I had told him what I wanted, and he went into Photoshop and was like, mocking it up for me. And so then we presented this to them. It took a long time to get it exactly perfect. But once it did, we launched. And at this point, I had sold nothing in my life. I had no idea that I even had selling power. And on launch day, the site completely crashed. It was like everything sold out. Everything crashed. They were completely shocked. I was completely shocked because I had no idea. I was like, what if nobody buys? You know? And then this collaboration.
Josh
Humble, Humble.
Desi Perkins
This collaboration turned into from three months to almost three years. I was designing with them. I remember I got them on Maluma. I got them like.
Josh
I remember those Aviator ones.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. I remember I was like, I reached out to Stylist. I created PR lists for them. And, like, they didn't have PR at.
Stephen
The time running the business.
Desi Perkins
I was just. I'm so, like, I love to be so involved.
Stephen
Super. Hands on.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. Running creative and all of this. And basically saw them through acquisition.
Josh
Wow.
Desi Perkins
And they got acquired. And then when they got acquired, you weren't owner. I was not an owner at all. So I had tried to negotiate that in the room. I basically sold them $65 million worth of that one. Sunglass.
Josh
Josh, I know you're not in that side of the world at that. At that time in your life. Everybody wore those glasses. It was everybody I'm talking about. You go to the mall, people around December, and you want to take a picture with Santa Claus at the mall that had them on.
Desi Perkins
Santa Claus.
Josh
No, Josh, I kid you not. Everybody had those glasses. Wow. Everybody.
Stephen
And they were. They were. So they were a collab with you. Okay.
Desi Perkins
So basically I was just collabing with them and getting a percentage and like this. The contract, I remember, was like this big when we first signed, because I didn't know what I was doing. I didn't have, like, an attorney or anything, so. And the story which I did tell on another podcast was essentially, I went to go renegotiate the terms of our contract. They just got acquired. This is like, like crazy.
Stephen
This is post.
Desi Perkins
This is post, them being acquired. And the. It's a new guy that comes in, and we're kind of presenting this to him and telling him, you know, what we think we should be doing and what we've done for the brand. And he looked at me in this boardroom in front of all these people and said, that's a lot of Money for a little girl.
Stephen
You are lying.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Stephen
Did the finger come out? Please tell me the finger came out.
Desi Perkins
You know what? The finger didn't come out because I was truly shocked. Like, that was one.
Stephen
That's what he said, right?
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Stephen
Verbatim.
Desi Perkins
Yes, verbatim.
Stephen
Word for word or forbatum.
Desi Perkins
And forbade. Luckily, at the time, I had my agents there with me who had my back. I had signed at that point with CAA and my agent, Iman, and, you know, they had. They stood up and had my back, and I was actually completely.
Josh
Why would you even say that?
Stephen
That's insane.
Desi Perkins
I was completely in shock. Like, I didn't know. And mind you, this isn't the team I had been working with up until then. This is like. Like. And so I left that room again. I wish I could. Sometimes I wish I could go back and say what I wanted to say, but I was so thrown off that I just was silenced. And I remember, like, kind of looking back like this and being like, are you talking to me again?
Stephen
Did you just say that? Like, what the.
Desi Perkins
And so in that moment, it was like my. I always like to call it my villain origin story, where, like, I. But I'm so grateful for that.
Stephen
I can't imagine her in the room, like, fucking.
Desi Perkins
I was. No, I walked out and I remember I was crying, and I told Stephen, like. Like, I really thought. Like, I really poured my whole life into this thinking that, like, as if it was my own, you know, and it wasn't. It never was. And I remember looking at him and saying, like, I. I want to just. Let's. I can't work. I can't do that. I can't go back. Like, let's. Let's do our own thing. And he. He looked at me and said, let's do it. And that's when Desi was started. Yeah.
Josh
That's crazy. And they're way sicker.
Desi Perkins
And I. I love that you love them.
Josh
I love them. And you know what's crazy is I went to Nordstrom's recently, and that brand was around there. And then Desi Eyewear was somewhat next to it.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
And those other ones look dusty as. And your. Was gleaming. Like your. Was shiny. Like, sick.
Desi Perkins
You know, it's like. It's so interesting because, like, in that moment, I was so upset, and I was like, oh, my God. But now looking back in retrospect, I'm like, I'm so grateful for that.
Josh
For sure.
Desi Perkins
I'm so grateful for one. The opportunity, because. Cause there was people on that Team that rode with me. And to be honest, I hired them after for my own brand.
Stephen
Oh, wow.
Josh
That's awesome.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. And I would have never found my love for designing eyewear. I always knew I wanted to be a designer, but I didn't realize it was gonna be eyewear until that moment. So I'm grateful for that, and I'm grateful for that, man. I'm so thankful, because I love when people tell me I can't do something. Cause I'm like, just watch. And. And I just now designed custom sunglasses for Beyonce for her cowboy car draw.
Stephen
Oh, my God.
Josh
Custom. Wow.
Desi Perkins
She wore four pairs. Yeah. On the tour.
Stephen
How did that happen? Like, did she hit you up? Is she sliding your DMs?
Desi Perkins
I'm still, like, just in shock about it. So when she announced Cowboy Carter, I'm such a huge believer in manifestation and making sure that you're writing things down, not just, like, speaking them into existence, but have a notebook and write everything down. Like, I remember I wrote down the brands and everything, and I wrote down Cowboy Carter on the top of this sketch pad. And I sketched sunglasses for Beyonce. For Cowboy Carter.
Stephen
This is before you even had a conversation with her?
Desi Perkins
No, no conversation. Like, never in my mind did I think she. No one was gonna reach out to me. Like, I just said, in the case that anyone reaches out to me, I will have a pair ready to go. I designed it. I'm like. And I sat there. I remember Ocean was sitting next to me when I designed it, and he was watching me do it. And then months later, we get the. The message saying, like, hey, we'd love to get on a zoom and talk about designing for Beyonce for Cowboy Carter. And I was in Mexico when I took the Zoom. Yeah. I was in Mexico and pv, and I was playing. What is it called? Pickleball or something. We were playing pickleball with my cousin, and I said, I gotta get this Zoom real quick.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
And we hopped on and we talked about it, and I sent them off. Obviously, there's no guarantee.
Stephen
Of course not. Yeah.
Desi Perkins
Like, you can do whatever, and there's no guarantee if anyone's gonna wear it. And so every single night she performed, I was like.
Stephen
Oh, interesting.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. You just don't know. Because as you know, like, even when you have a styling session, they'll put a bunch.
Stephen
Of course, it's not personal.
Desi Perkins
And it's just, like, if it doesn't go with the outfit, it doesn't go. And I had actually handmade sunglasses that nobody's ever seen still to this day, because. Because the time crunch was so small that I had to do it by hand. Some of them, like, I took preexisting ones, drilled holes, wrapped them in suede, pierced them, like, did all kinds of stuff, like laser etched bandana print into one pair with, like, rhinestones. It was sick. And so every day that she performed, I just was like, my eyes were sitting there waiting, waiting, and then finally I saw the pair and I was screaming. My whole team was screaming. And I just like, where do I go from here? Like, this was incredible. And it's such a strong manifestation moment that I'm like, little. The little Desi in me was like, I'm still emotional about it.
Stephen
Have you ever. Did you get a chance to, like, actually talk with her?
Desi Perkins
So one night I met her, and the night I met her and got to, like, talk to her because I was doing a deal with Sacred. She had been wearing my sunglasses. This was before Cowboy Carter, but when I met her, she wasn't wearing them, so I didn't know. And then when I got into my Uber, my best friend Katie sent me a picture and was like, bitch. And I said, what is this? And I zoomed and I'm like, oh, my God, she's wearing my sunglasses. And that was like, the start of that relationship where, you know, she had started wearing Desi. And she's worn it a handful of.
Stephen
Times now, so it's like, is there a potential collaboration?
Desi Perkins
I mean, it's Beyonce. I don't, like, I don't know. I mean, I'm grateful for that moment. And her stylist, who's been so amazing and just, like, constantly, like, being that person that's, like, writing for our brand and putting her in them, and it's huge. Yeah. So, yeah, it's been amazing. Like, I mean, I can't. Usher wore them in his music video. There's been so many moments where I'm like, this is insane. And I'm so glad that that moment happened.
Stephen
Are you, like, aware when something like this is going to happen? Like the Beyonce situation, Like, with Usher, did you know that he was going to wear them?
Desi Perkins
But potentially.
Stephen
So that was just more.
Desi Perkins
So the Usher thing was like, I think I'm such a big advocate about, like, writing for, like, just being your number one spokesperson. And. And I'm actually. I had. Remember, I was going to set to work with Sacred, and I know that a stylist was going to be there that, you know, styles, celebrities. So I remember bringing her sunglasses. I, like, saw that she did A lot of male styling. So I brought her this pair of drippy that, like. Like, a lot of guys like to wear. And. And I was just like, here you go. Whatever. I'm giving these to you. Go ahead. Like, she could have kept them for herself, like, whatever she wanted to do with them. And then she ended up putting them on Usher.
Josh
Wow.
Desi Perkins
For a music video. And so it was like, that's incredible. Insane. And he was, like, doing interviews in them, and I was just. It was amazing.
Stephen
That's so crazy.
Desi Perkins
And I think now, too, like, even designing for myself, it's fun because I. I can do whatever I want. Like, I design things, and I don't have anyone being like, that's not commercial enough. Because the ones that aren't commercial, like, I found my audience. They love. Love to be bold. They love to wear, like, fun stuff.
Josh
So which. The ones that I really like.
Desi Perkins
Pusha.
Josh
Yeah, Those are sick.
Stephen
Are they like, the bigger ones?
Josh
You see me, right?
Stephen
Yeah, those are sick.
Josh
Yeah, they're sick. I was like, AKA oh, these right here, right?
Stephen
Those are fires.
Josh
Yeah, he told me.
Desi Perkins
Let me get you some. I'm gonna get you.
Josh
Yeah. Like, can I. I don't have the red ones, though.
Desi Perkins
You don't? I'm gonna have to put you on. I'm gonna have to put you on your own pr. I have Karen on the pr, But I feel like you guys are fighting. The girls are fighting.
Josh
If you ever need any, like, male models to be on Billboard words, we'll do it for free.
Desi Perkins
Okay.
Stephen
That would actually be cool.
Josh
Wouldn't that be cool? But we don't. We don't ever, like, promote it. It's just. People just know.
Desi Perkins
They just know.
Josh
They just know. Yeah. No, honestly, congratulations.
Desi Perkins
Thank you.
Josh
It's huge.
Stephen
Thank you. Insane.
Josh
Yeah.
Stephen
So cool.
Josh
And then she still has skincare.
Desi Perkins
Yes.
Stephen
Yeah.
Josh
And then.
Stephen
So what's. What's the story there? What's the villain origin story there?
Desi Perkins
So there's no villain origin story with skincare. It's more so that, like, I had a personal experience with, like. Like, really bad skin. And. And then a journey of, like, clearing my skin through social media and having this vulnerable moment where when I just had really, like, my skin was breaking out so bad, I couldn't get rid of this acne. And then it was a time of perfectionism on YouTube where nobody showed their flaws. We were all, like, perfect voiceovers. You look perfect. It was just different. And one day I was. I was reading comments, and everyone was talking about how nice my skin was. They're like, your skin, your skin, your skin. But, like, I had been covering my skin before filming to make sure, like, my. My breakouts weren't so red or.
Josh
Sure.
Desi Perkins
And I had, like, perfected this technique to do that. And so one day I was like, you know what? I kind of feel like I'm just gonna show them what my skin really looks like and how I make it look like I have perfect skin, but I don't. And that video was, like, the first video that really did so well for me. And I realized that there's so many people that aren't looking for perfectionism and they're having similar struggles. And so I took that, and I was like, let me just. Just continue to fill my journey through skincare. And I started trying different products. And I remember trying this Ula Henriksen toner. And it, again, a happy accident. Steven bought it for me. I was like. I sent him to Sephora. We were on a brand trip, and I was like, my skin was so bad. And I sent him to Sephora to get me a spot treatment. And he came back with this toner, and I was like, a toner. But I started using it, and it, like, really helped my skin. And so it was, like, a big moment where people were calling it the Desi toner. And I just was like, like, you know, I'm really into, like, skin care and doing this and helping people feel better about themselves. So then I started working and developing, Working with chemists and stuff to develop Desi skin. So I was like. As I was launching eyewear, I was simultaneously working on Desi skin. And then we launched it shortly after Eyewear, and it's been doing amazing. And we actually just launched with Sephora, which is.
Josh
Yeah.
Stephen
Wow.
Desi Perkins
Such a dream.
Josh
Congratulations.
Stephen
With somebody who's, like, struggled with bad skin. I had, like, terrible skin in high school and stuff. And I know that I always would look at people on YouTube with perfect skin, what I thought was perfect skin, and then I would realize that a lot of these people are using, like, makeup and filters and stuff like that. So you having that vulnerability, I. I know how much that meant to people, because I know how much that would have meant to me as, like, a viewer. You know what I mean?
Desi Perkins
Right. And I think now people understand that. It's like, we're all going through something.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
It's nice to know that you're not alone in Mom. I think a lot of. A lot of my best and most like, like, popular things come from vulnerable moments and vulnerability. Yeah. So, yeah.
Josh
Damn. Well, I think we should go on a short break. This is it. And then we'll be right back.
Stephen
Cool.
Josh
Don't get a buno.
Desi Perkins
Me too. What's that? Beer.
Josh
What an incredible story. We're having so much fun. It's going by so fast.
Stephen
It is, right? It's been an hour.
Josh
It's crazy, dude. To go from thinking about skincare stuff with chemists to then designing sunglasses and eyewear. Yeah, that's crazy.
Stephen
And seeing how your mind has to, like, jump because.
Josh
And then being a mother of two and then still taking this fool out on Friday nights. Holy. Thank you for having time to be on. I appreciate you. Straight up. For real. We'll be right back. All right, let me put my headphones on, because I'm not immersed right now.
Stephen
Hurry up and get immersed yourself.
Josh
All right, I'm good now.
Stephen
Rapid fire. Rapid fire means you have to.
Josh
Yes. Want me to start rapid fire? I got him.
Stephen
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
Were you about to mansplain rapid fire to me?
Stephen
No, no, no, no, no.
Josh
Mansplain.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. That's when, like, a man explains something to you. Like, you don't know. No, it's called mansplain.
Josh
Oh, are you sexist?
Stephen
No. First of all, I. I was.
Josh
Tell him. Tell them.
Stephen
You guys can't use that card on me. I was raised by a single mom.
Josh
That.
Stephen
That's the. I did not say.
Josh
Whatever, bro.
Stephen
I was gonna do a bit. It wasn't going to be a man's land.
Josh
You ran out of gas, bro. You know, his car stopped because he's ran out of gas.
Stephen
It's a Jeep.
Josh
Twice.
Stephen
It's a terrible.
Desi Perkins
Honestly, Jeeps are. I had a Jeep before.
Stephen
They're, like, notorious for that, bro.
Josh
When you're a cocktail server.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. In high school, Jeeps are Jeeps.
Josh
You had a Jeep in high school?
Desi Perkins
Yeah, I got my.
Josh
You're a cool girl.
Desi Perkins
Well, it wasn't the cool. No. At the time, the cool girl car was, like, a Nissan Altima, like a Honda Civic. The Civic days where people would get the lights on the back.
Josh
It was the cat eyes in the bag. Remember those?
Desi Perkins
If you were really rich, you would have, like, the really cool. Like, what was it called? The out. Was it an Audi? No.
Josh
Audi.
Desi Perkins
Jetta.
Stephen
Oh, a Jetta.
Desi Perkins
All the girls had a Jetta.
Josh
Yeah. Dang. Jetta had us by. By the chokehold.
Desi Perkins
So when I pulled up with my Jeep Cherokee, I was like, right?
Josh
Oh, it was a Cherokee.
Desi Perkins
It was a Cherokee.
Josh
Oh, that's cute. Yeah. What was your high school car?
Stephen
Mine, bro. My Mom's car.
Josh
What was it she had?
Stephen
Alexis.
Josh
Yeah. Rich boy.
Stephen
Anyways, okay, you're on a road trip and you stop at a gas station. What snacks are you getting?
Desi Perkins
Reese's Peanut Butter cups, Hot Cheetos and a Cherry Cook.
Stephen
You know, there's no right answer to this, but that's the right answer. Just FYI, guy.
Josh
You said it, pal. If you were. If you were a bag of chips, what chips would you be?
Desi Perkins
I'd be hot Cheetos. I know. It's so cliche.
Josh
Regular hot Cheetos.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. And then I. I don't. I. I like regular. And then I put the.
Stephen
You season them up?
Desi Perkins
Yeah, yeah. To like, real Mexican with chopsticks so my fingers don't get all red. Yeah, it's real bougie.
Josh
Whoa, whoa. I never heard about it.
Stephen
I've done forks. I've seen the forks.
Desi Perkins
No, I got a little chop.
Josh
Mind blowing.
Desi Perkins
And I, like, fill the bag with lemon. And then I just.
Stephen
Wow. I'm gonna do that. What is your all time favorite movie? This is a very.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, I want to say Devil Wears Prada, but like, I love that.
Stephen
That's all.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, I really love that.
Josh
That's all.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, that's all.
Stephen
I love that movie.
Desi Perkins
So many movies.
Stephen
That's a great movie. They're making a second one, which I can't wait for.
Josh
I know.
Stephen
Is that what you're going for? I think that's good. I think that's good. I think that's a solid answer, sister.
Josh
It's a great movie. Yeah. Mine is Nine of the Roxbury. What's one of your guilty pleasures?
Desi Perkins
Guilty pleasures? I don't feel guilty doing anything.
Josh
Oh, come on, man. Guilty pleasure.
Desi Perkins
Like, why feel guilt? Just do it.
Stephen
Oh, that's the answer. What is the last song you've had on repeat?
Desi Perkins
Oh, my God. You guys are gonna laugh at me. You won't even know what it is. Golden. But if you're a parent, you know, K Pop Demon Hunters, it's like.
Stephen
Oh, no, no. I'm thinking about a different song.
Josh
K Pop Demon Hunters. That's where you're at in life right now.
Desi Perkins
Yes, that's where I'm at in life.
Josh
Wow.
Desi Perkins
I'm hearing it in my head the whole time, you guys.
Josh
I respect it. Okay. Okay. Amazing answer.
Desi Perkins
It's a good soundtrack.
Josh
What's your purse? What's your personal version of hell?
Stephen
That's such a good question.
Desi Perkins
Personal version of hell? Oh, well, I. I mean, I don't know about hell, but I really don't like to be hungover. As a parent.
Stephen
That's a good one.
Josh
That's actually a great answer. That's what I would say.
Stephen
Yeah. It's hungover.
Desi Perkins
Like, imagine them hungover.
Stephen
You're hungover, but you still have to.
Desi Perkins
Be a mom when you're like, I. I choose wisely. That's why I like a day drink. Because by the time, you know, like, I can. Yeah, I can recover.
Josh
That's smart, dude. That.
Stephen
That was a perfect answer. What is your idea of a perfect day?
Josh
Day.
Desi Perkins
A perfect day. This is easy. Okay. Waking up, coffee in bed. My son brings it to me. My husband brings it to me. Me and my daughter be chilling in bed, watching Peppa pig for, like, 15 minutes. And then I go down and I go to my garden. We spend the day in the garden. We have music blasting outside. The kids are running around. We swim a little bit, and we just chill and maybe, like, order some pizza.
Stephen
I love that.
Josh
Sounds like my perfect.
Desi Perkins
I just had that day, like, last week. That's why I was like, that is my perfect day.
Josh
Okay. I love that the girly pops are known to have three drinks with them at any given time. What is Desi Perkins sipping on?
Desi Perkins
O.
Josh
Like, what's your three go to drinks?
Desi Perkins
I guess tequila.
Josh
Okay. Straight.
Desi Perkins
Straight.
Josh
Okay.
Stephen
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
I'm not really a mixed drink.
Stephen
No. Maybe tequila soda, maybe.
Desi Perkins
Maybe. But typically, I'm like, shot.
Josh
Like, just give it to me. Just give me a shot.
Desi Perkins
Yes. And then I don't like any mixed drinks, really. So tequila. I love a beer.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
And champagne right now is kind of my thing when I'm just trying to feel, like a little. A little sexy. A little.
Josh
Got it.
Desi Perkins
You know, when I walk into an event, like, nothing too serious.
Josh
Nobody ever judges you when you drink champagne. Oh, I'm gonna go get a beer. I'm gonna get a. A shot. Oh, you're going to get faded tonight. But when you drink champagne, it's like, oh, okay.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, cool.
Stephen
It's almost like, why is that? I don't know.
Desi Perkins
It's a little classy. Yeah.
Stephen
It's like, oh, they're. They're not doing too much.
Josh
They're just like, next time I'm going be like, yo, I'm going to just go get some champagne real quick, but really take a shot.
Desi Perkins
It's basically soda water, so.
Josh
Yeah, I love that.
Stephen
What is your favorite? Fast food. Plus, I need your full order from that fast food spot.
Desi Perkins
I mean, I'm going to have to say in and out. I do love. I love Me some in and out. I get a number two with grilled onions. I used to get a little.
Josh
Wait, number two. It's a regular cheeseburger.
Desi Perkins
Regular cheeseburger. I don't like to do too much.
Josh
No, no, I don't need. You know what? I respect that. People always do. Number one. And it's actually number two is the. The one. Have you ever had a regular cheeseburger? You know, not a double double.
Stephen
No. I go double double, bro. I'm a man.
Josh
Okay. All right.
Stephen
Do you need me a man? Explain that to you?
Josh
Hey, Desi, tell him you're sexy.
Stephen
Are you doing. Are you doing a number two?
Josh
Are you doing realizing?
Stephen
No. You're trying to act up. See, one thing I'm not going to do is pretend. One thing I'm not going to do is pretend.
Josh
I realize right now, being with an. Somebody who I grew up with. Huh? That you're sexist.
Stephen
Listen, you have your foot on the glass. That's sexist. Okay. Get your foot off the glass.
Josh
I paid for this glass. You're sexist.
Stephen
No, no, no. We. And I'm realizing that we paid for this glass.
Desi Perkins
I fighting.
Josh
I'm realizing that.
Desi Perkins
You know what? I'm going to say one thing. The toilet seat was down, so I feel like everyone here is good.
Stephen
Yeah, I know one thing about me. Toys is always going to be down.
Desi Perkins
You appreciate that?
Josh
Okay, can I say something that might be tmi and I always think about this.
Desi Perkins
Okay, tell us.
Josh
Because we've been back to back Dodger games recently. And what I realized is when I go to the toilet and be real with me, both.
Desi Perkins
I'm gonna be so real with you.
Josh
Well, actually, it doesn't really. It doesn't. Because girls, like, down go through this. But I don't know, maybe mainly for you, Josh. But just hear me out. And hear me out, too, Stephen.
Stephen
We're listening.
Josh
When you go to a toilet, whether it be at a guest house or at an event or at a stadium or whatever, you're at a random toilet and you see piss on the seat. Yeah. Are you wiping that? If. If real talk.
Stephen
If I'm just gonna pee.
Josh
No, if you're gonna. You. You have to put your pants down.
Stephen
What do you think? Like, what do you. What do you think? Do you think? I'm not wiping that.
Josh
I'm sorry, let me rephrase my question.
Stephen
What do you. What do you think?
Desi Perkins
That was a really good answer. What do you think? Yes. For as a woman, I am taking a large wad of toilet paper. So that I don't get any contact and I'm wiping it down. Then I'm putting a seat cover and another seat cover.
Stephen
Is that not doubling up?
Josh
So you do see covers.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, Unless I'm really drunk and then I just kind of. And then I'll just hover.
Josh
Can I say something right now? I cheek it all the time.
Stephen
Yeah. He's known in our friend group for cheeking it. So anytime Sebas goes into it, I'm talking to Karen. Anytime goes into a restroom, our friend group, where we're all like hanging out, whatever he's like, we just say, Sebas is cheeking it right now. That's the thing that we say when he's. He's in the bathroom.
Desi Perkins
So it's known. Like, you talk about it.
Josh
It's almost now. Like, I'm proud of it.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, I was gonna say that. I was like, you sound proud to take it.
Stephen
So you're. But you're not wiping.
Josh
Sorry, let me rephrase that question.
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
When you go to a toilet and you see piss around it, right? Because be pissing on that.
Desi Perkins
Yeah. We've established the piss on the.
Josh
Right, Right. And the lids there. So there's piss around it. Okay. If it's somebody else's piss and you just took a piss, are you wiping it for the next person? Are you leaving it?
Desi Perkins
Oh, if you're standing.
Josh
If you're standing. Because like the next person, you don't. If it's my piss. And I asked because it happens.
Stephen
Okay. That's a different question.
Desi Perkins
How did we get here?
Stephen
Great question.
Josh
I don't know.
Desi Perkins
How did we get here?
Josh
I don't know.
Desi Perkins
Not sitting.
Josh
I'm just saying, like out of a. Out of like respect. Cuz like, say you pee neck, you pee after me and I'm going leave all the residue. If it's my piss, I'mma wipe that. If it's somebody else's piss, I'm leaving it.
Stephen
Like, if it already came with piss.
Josh
Yeah, if it already came with piss, I'm leaving it, bro. And I'll let you know that's not my piss. And I'm not touching that.
Desi Perkins
Like, when you walk out and you make eye contact with the person coming.
Stephen
In, you're like, not my piss.
Josh
Yeah, it's not me. What do you do? You wiping the rat? No. Right.
Stephen
It just depends on the mood, bro. If I'm at a sporting event, probably not. I'm in and out. You know what I mean? I'm not thinking about it that deep. But if it's like at a airport or something. Maybe I'm a little more considerate. Okay, that's just mine.
Josh
I just realized. Why are we talking about this?
Desi Perkins
I. I tried to. To make you realize she never finished.
Josh
All I can see is a sexist in front of you.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, I was talking about my order, and next thing you know, we're talking about piss and toilets. Eat.
Josh
So I'm like, okay, next question.
Stephen
Desi Perkins, you're in and out.
Josh
Order.
Stephen
What if I would?
Desi Perkins
Okay, number two, grilled onions. Sometimes I'll get extra lettuce, because sometimes they'd be stingy. Sometimes they're stingy with the lettuce. And I like a good proportion. That way I can, like, take some out. That's a rare chopped chilies.
Stephen
People don't do extra.
Josh
She likes the crunch.
Desi Perkins
I love the crunch. I like.
Josh
And it has great lettuce. You know how to say lettuce in Spanish? Good. Good girl.
Desi Perkins
And then.
Josh
Good girl.
Stephen
I like this version of Sebastian. I don't like this version of seven, by the way.
Josh
Good girl.
Stephen
No, don't.
Desi Perkins
But why'd you have to say it like that?
Josh
Like, girl, me and Josh, you know, we. We've done. We. We've done it. We've. We've done our thing. Don't worry about it, sweetheart.
Stephen
But, girl, extra lettuce.
Desi Perkins
Okay?
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
And then French fries, and I don't really like their drinks. I always say, like, when I say Sprite and they say I only have seven Up, I'm like, that's criminal.
Stephen
That is.
Desi Perkins
So I get a lemonade sometimes just to get it. But is it my favorite?
Stephen
No, no, the lemonade is not your favorite.
Desi Perkins
It's a little much sometimes.
Josh
Diet Coke.
Desi Perkins
I can't do Diet Coke. It gives me a headache.
Josh
Really?
Desi Perkins
Yeah. A migraine. Massive.
Stephen
That's why you did the.
Josh
The.
Desi Perkins
I can't.
Stephen
All right, what are your go to, Desi? Eyewear frames.
Josh
You have a go to do you just skip me?
Stephen
You over here talking about toilet seats and piss, and I'm gonna have to.
Desi Perkins
Say, like, the aviator blueprint, because it's like. Like the original design that I did. That's like my go to. And it never goes out of style and probably booked. It's like a simple go to style that I like.
Stephen
Can I be on your PR list? Rapid fire.
Desi Perkins
Yes, of course. And I got to put you on our list, cuz. See, I thought you guys. I thought you and Karen were sharing, but apparently I'm hearing that she don't share. Yeah, that you guys aren't sharing, so.
Josh
And I, I want my own.
Desi Perkins
I'll, I'll send you your own.
Josh
And I'm ask Josh. I'm a huge sunglass.
Desi Perkins
No, I know you are.
Josh
Oh, yeah, we huge sunglass.
Desi Perkins
No, I'll put you on pr.
Josh
Yeah, like, one thing about me is I'll spend whatever flex on any sunglasses as long as, like, I like them. I'm a huge sunglass guy.
Desi Perkins
Oh, so you're going to buy them?
Josh
I'll buy them.
Desi Perkins
Did you hear? I got money to spend on eyewear.
Stephen
I will spend.
Josh
Don't put me on your PR list.
Stephen
I'll buy them.
Josh
It doesn't matter what you saying, cuz you know why you're sexist.
Stephen
That's the next question.
Josh
Dude, what's the most fun part about being a mom?
Desi Perkins
When you see their personalities and they're funny or they like, they're quick with you.
Stephen
That's cool.
Josh
Oh, really?
Desi Perkins
Oh, like they get you.
Josh
Yeah.
Desi Perkins
You know when they outsmart you, I'm like, okay, I like that. Yeah.
Stephen
Best advice you've ever got, personal and or business related.
Desi Perkins
Best advice I ever got was business. And it was everything will go wrong. You have, your job is to learn to pivot and work with everything going wrong. And like, once you realize that, you live in acceptance of things going wrong and you just become a better boss because you're like, okay, here's a problem. How do we pivot? And that's the best advice because now I don't anticipate everything going right. I'm always ready to, like, problem solve.
Stephen
That's beautiful.
Josh
It's beautiful. That was, that was the fast fire rapid questions for Desi Perkins. Yeah. Yeah. Desi, I truly want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts, cuz our hearts are connected.
Desi Perkins
I, I, I can see that. No, I noticed. I noticed there's something here.
Josh
That's my little boy. We want to thank you for being on the podcast. I know all the girly paws back at home. I don't know if you know this, but 90% of our audience is beautiful women.
Stephen

Desi Perkins
You know, that doesn't surprise me.
Josh
It doesn't.
Desi Perkins
It does not surprise me.
Josh
So we want to thank you for being on La Platica. I hope it's not the last time.
Stephen
That you ever got a running back.
Josh
Thank you for being on. Thank you, Stephen, for being on. For me personally, it's, it's almost like an accomplishment for myself because I've known you guys for so long. It feels really Good.
Desi Perkins
It feels good seeing you doing, like, crazy big things. And thank you accomplishing all. Both of you guys doing the damn thing.

Stephen
Super down, bro.
Josh
I'm so down.
Desi Perkins
I don't care about anything other than bring your girlfriend.
Stephen
Yes.
Desi Perkins
Bring Karen.
Josh
Yes. Wouldn't that be epic? But listen, should we do, like, a whole brand trip around it?
Desi Perkins
Yeah.
Josh
Like, Desi, I wear skin.
Desi Perkins
Yes.
Josh
Like, we can do libre salute, Whatever.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, we should do a brand trip like that.
Stephen
Dude, that would be epic.
Josh
Yeah, but just us.
Stephen
No invites. Just us.
Josh
And we'll. And we'll gift each other drones. Remember, we would have the DJI Osmo, but it was the one that you had to put your phone on. Oh, yes. How old are we?
Desi Perkins
The long stick.
Josh
Yeah. Right?
Desi Perkins
And now it's like the little tiny.
Josh
And now it's a pocket. I love that thing. Yeah. Desi, I wish you nothing but success in your future. Obviously, that's already a given. You're a beautiful wife, beautiful daughter.
Desi Perkins

Josh
You're sexist.
Stephen
Listen.
Desi Perkins
Yeah, I want to hear from Josh.
Stephen
I. I was really excited. Excited about this podcast. I'm very inspired by your story and your upbringing and. And just hearing how you are as a. As an individual, as a mother, and the whole finger thing and just seeing your daughter, like, emulate that. But what's beautiful about that is she's going to emulate so much more of you.
Josh
I love it.
Stephen
You have the whole package, and you're. You're. It's. It's. It's shown. And I'm very proud of you, and I'm excited for you, and I'm inspired by you, and I'm just really glad that I got the opportunity to sit with you and meet Stephen, really, for the first time. And this is the first time. Thank you for your presence. Thank you for your heart, your vulnerability, your story, your inspiration, and thank you for coming on. Means a lot.
