Learning your tribal history can help you to understand why we are the way we are. I know some of you think that historical events took place long time ago and are no longer relevant, but they’re still important to us because we have to remember and honor our own history. For centuries, Lakota life has been shaped by systematic efforts to seize land and impose social control, often carried out by American institutions claiming protection or order. January 3, 2026. Wioteghika Wi is the name of the tenth full moon of the Lakotan year. This year, that full moon occurred early Saturday morning, January 3, at 3:02 Pine Ridge Time. Oteghika is defined by Buechel as “very hard to endure, trying, difficult," and Wioteghika Wi as "the hard moon.” We use "Hardships" as the name of this moon. The Lakotan year in 1890 began with the early morning full moon on April 5 at 2:24 am. That was the first full moon–Magaksicha Agli Wi–of that year. The tenth full moon–Hardships–was December 25, 1890, at 10:57 pm. The...Article Link

A great time starting out the year with smiles is what happened at the OST Nursing home for New Years Eve. I had the opportunity to entertain the residents on New Years eve for the third year in a row. The Ridge Rocker band formerly called Crazy Indian Cowboy, with lifelong member the late Barney Janis, Tim Mesteth, and myself in the beginning, we always had a great time playing up there and as we got older, we were even more happy to play up there because some of the residents and staff were our family and close friends too....Article Link
