Headspace.com Holderness it's like the Bible.
Penn Holderness
Then Goodnight Moon. And then anything about vampires.
Kim Holderness
And then anything about Taylor Swift.
Penn Holderness
Then anything about courts of beds and thorns. Oh yes, thorns.
Kim Holderness
And then.
Penn Holderness
And then Brown Bear.
Kim Holderness
Hey everyone. Oh yeah, it's going great, guys.
Penn Holderness
Hey everyone.
Kim Holderness
Hey everyone. It's Kim.
Penn Holderness
It's also Pen Holderness. And so this is the best intro we've ever done on the Holderness family podcast. Guys, just so you know, I'm looking out the window and it's. It's like snowing heavily. And we live in North Carolina.
Kim Holderness
It's this. Oh, also it's beautiful. It's the second day in a row that it's snowing. I don't remember it ever snowing two days in a row here.
Penn Holderness
Well, here's the thing. Usually we're a bit of a cry wolf state, right? Like, they say it's going to snow, they close the schools, no one goes to school. And then it's like 70 degrees and sunny and everyone's complaining about why there's no school today. They were like, it may snow for a second.
Kim Holderness
It's been going for a bit, a.
Penn Holderness
Couple hours and schools are already closed. And it snowed all day yesterday.
Kim Holderness
Okay. This week we've got a little beak behind the curtain into some fresh new starts, some really fun projects, some personal news we have. But yes, I would say the headline is it's snowing. But by the time you listen to this, because it's North Carolina, it will be 72 degrees and sunny.
Penn Holderness
So, yeah, that's just science for you.
Kim Holderness
Okay, another quick update. Fun fact, Ann Marie, our producer tells us that 53% of podcast listeners, more than half consume podcasts on YouTube.
Penn Holderness
Is that right?
Kim Holderness
So YouTube.
Penn Holderness
So they're watching it?
Kim Holderness
Yeah, it's now the leading platform for podcasts.
Penn Holderness
Wow. Okay.
Kim Holderness
So over the years we have had questions about putting our podcast on YouTube and it's, it's pretty daunting if I'm honest, because although we work in a video platform doing hour long or 45 minute long videos, it, it takes some work. But we're making some change and we're going to be launching it, like, soon.
Penn Holderness
This is a genius move by Anne Marie, who knows that you and I are very particular about putting this on.
Kim Holderness
Television and, or it's actually, it would never be.
Penn Holderness
Sorry. On a screen. On a screen.
Kim Holderness
On a screen.
Penn Holderness
Excuse me. And so by putting this into our special announcements, we now are like, locked in on this.
Kim Holderness
Super locked.
Penn Holderness
Very smart.
Kim Holderness
Very.
Penn Holderness
And I like it too. It's going to like she. We needed to, we need to push because we're, we're, are we a little bit of a perfectionist when it comes to this?
Kim Holderness
Yeah. Yeah. And we all are. I mean, everybody in our team is.
Penn Holderness
The video part of it.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. But I think that we just have to have our. Just do it. No, you're. If you're listening on Spotify or itunes, you're still gonna be able to listen. It won't change. But we'll be posting a video version on YouTube, do you think, can I.
Penn Holderness
Ask, like, can we marinate in this a bit? Because we've got time. It's a podcast. Do you think we'll be good at that? Do you think it's different? Right. We know that there's a camera on you.
Kim Holderness
So they. We had. Where were we? Oh, we were. We took a few days off because our kids had off school and Anne Marie and Sam and Desmond came in and they sort of rearranged the attic furniture and we, we've kind of. We're sitting in the chairs that we're going to be potting from. I'm not wearing a bra. I'm wearing my leopard print fleece pants that if you're, if you're family here, you know, have a big hole in the crotch. So this would not be appropriate. So I'm thinking to myself, I'm going to have to put on makeup. Or maybe I don't. Maybe we just don't. Maybe this is the place where we're just like come as you are. You.
Penn Holderness
You did okay me to order those, those high resolution cameras. So they are, they're getting here today and we're going to set them up and they are.
Kim Holderness
Is there like a TikTok filter or.
Penn Holderness
A Snapchat filter Kappa. They are 4K. Yes. Maybe let's just be the people. The touch up appearance.
Kim Holderness
No, let's just show up how we are. Yeah, right. It's a gift.
Penn Holderness
I'm fine with that. I guess I was asking more about like if you know that this is going out on camera. Like I play like, I fidget with stuff. I like I don't pick my nose, but I'll mess with my hair or I'll mess with.
Kim Holderness
It's going to be stuff.
Penn Holderness
And I know that. I know we've done this for a living on camera for a long time, but I've got to I guess get back a little bit to just remembering basic manners when I'm talking.
Kim Holderness
We'll get there, we'll get there. Or maybe we don't. And that's what makes it great. We are also thinking about renaming this podcast. I mean right now it doesn't really have a name, it's just our name. So that's really boring. We don't wanna do. At first it was tell me more. But then we learned that 97 podcasts are called Tell me more because Tell me more is probably the most frequently used phrase in our house. There's too many podcasts with tell me more. So we're thinking Tell us More. Because there's two of us.
Penn Holderness
That's totally different.
Kim Holderness
It's totally different, you guys.
Penn Holderness
Well, it might work.
Kim Holderness
I'm so bad.
Penn Holderness
It's.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, that. So that was. So. It was Anne Marie's idea. And it. At first I was like, I don't know. But then I started to like it because I think we approach this podcast out of genuine curiosity, out of the world. What's happening in our marriage, what's happening in our parenting? So when we have people on or when we're talking to each other, it is absolute curiosity. So if we say that, it gives permission to ask those questions.
Penn Holderness
And I, like, tell us more, too, because it's inclusive. It makes it feel like the conversation is between me and you, Kim and you, the listener. That's an us.
Kim Holderness
That is an if.
Penn Holderness
I. If I want to know more from Kim, our listener wants to know more from Kim, too. So Kim is not just telling me.
Kim Holderness
She's telling us.
Penn Holderness
It's really the most inclusive podcast in the history of mankind.
Kim Holderness
See, there has to be an award for that. Yeah. So. So we. It would just be like, tell us more with Ben and Kim or something like that. So to you guys, it's still the same thing, but for us, we've just been. We've been deep in thought about the podcast.
Penn Holderness
Can we just, like, lift the veil and say, it is really funny? We come up with ideas all the time. This happened with the board game. This happened with books. We're like, oh, here's what we're gonna call it. And then you Google it. And 8 million people have done it before.
Kim Holderness
I know.
Penn Holderness
There are no original ide escaping unless you just make up a word like flinderflog.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, that's probably available. I will say. And this is a segue as we talk about our creative process in a little bit. We are, I do believe, very creative people. In. In certain ways. You are very. You think in terms of music. You have a very comedic brain. I think I'm a good writer. Like, we're creative. We suck at naming things. So if you guys have suggestion for a name, bring it. Anne Marie and Sam are definitely our namers and titlers and captioners, the clubhouse leaders.
Penn Holderness
Tell us more. I think with Kim and Pen, I think we're getting rid of the Holderness family and just going, kim and Pen.
Kim Holderness
Right?
Penn Holderness
Is that.
Kim Holderness
I think we might have Holderness in there.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
I don't know.
Penn Holderness
It's. It's a clunky last name that, unfortunately, I gave you, but Kim and Pen is the same number of syllables and it gives more information.
Kim Holderness
Well, what I love most about the last name is. And I love meeting you guys in person. Really. I am an introvert, but I love meeting people who listen to this podcast. And I'm always in the, you know, in an airport or at Target or something. And people like, oh, you're Holderman. I'm like, yes, I am Kim Holderman.
Penn Holderness
Holderson Holders. Lola was announced in a basketball game as Lola Holders.
Kim Holderness
It's a lot. It's a lot. We collapsed. Okay. Speaking of Lola.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, that was a segue on purpose, you guys.
Kim Holderness
If you've been listening, you know, our daughter is a senior and she is. Was knee deep in the college application process.
Penn Holderness
And if I may, we've been talking about this for four years.
Kim Holderness
We've been talking about.
Penn Holderness
Because that's when going to college starts.
Kim Holderness
Is in high school.
Penn Holderness
Unfortunately, it starts in ninth grade. And so we've talked to essay people, we've talked to guidance counselors. Thank God. We've talked to Hope because she talks us back to Sensetown.
Kim Holderness
Dr. Hope Seidel, who's a parent coach. Yeah.
Penn Holderness
And, and so sorry. Just to say we've been talking about this for a long. This process has been a very long process, and this process is done over.
Kim Holderness
So our daughter has committed to a school and we aren't going to say where she's going. She can, she can post it wherever she wants to, but I just think you should find out from her if she wants to talk about it, but it's not our business to tell. I will say it is not the school we thought she'd go to. She got into the school we thought she'd go to, and we were so happy. And then she got into this other, like her kind of super secret dream school. And it is farther away than we thought. So these days you get an email with a notification and you don't. There's no more. Waiting by the mailbox for a big envelope. And Lola opens it up and her jaw drops.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. Stunned silence. I was filming, so I wasn't on the, on the camera. You also, your jaw dropped. You kind of, you yelled, holy. Lola was rigid, shaking, completely stunned about what was going on. But you could tell, very happy. I was laughing because I guess I was trying to break the silence. And then quickly, a couple of things happened. Like, I saw my, my wife's pride in my daughter. I saw a smile. I saw Lola's pride that she got in. And then, and then I saw then Kim. Kim Looked away for a second. I was like, okay, she's. She. It just hit her that Lola's not going to be right around the corner anymore. And she. And Kim, I think her heart broke a little bit and. And she wiped the tears away, looked back at her smile and said, this is so amazing. And it didn't skip a beat, but I. I could see it all happening in front of me, and it's all very real and it's all very normal and beautiful and like, so many things can be true. Right. You can be unbelievably proud of your daughter and know that she's going to the school she's supposed to go to, but also just heartbroken that it's going to be farther away than you thought it would be.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. And I. I deserve an Oscar, probably for that performance.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Because literally tears streaming down my face and I made them look like to her that it was happy tears.
Penn Holderness
It seems like so much of that is. Is centered or all of it is really centered around distance. Right.
Kim Holderness
100%.
Penn Holderness
And it's the interesting. One of the interesting things I heard is there are people who see and talk to their kids more who are a plane flight away than their kids who are a car drive away. I mean, it just depends on what their college experience is going to be and how much they want to communicate. I was a car drive away from my parents and I. I ghosted them so hard through college. And I'm sorry, my mom and dad, like.
Kim Holderness
Did you have a cell phone back then, though?
Penn Holderness
No. Yeah, I mean, it's just full on ghosting. I mean, it was like. It was bad. Like, I don't.
Kim Holderness
You're not. You should not be telling me this right now.
Penn Holderness
Well, okay. Here's the other thing, though. Like, they were, like, definitely up in my business for the first 18 years of my life, and one of the things that I needed personally was just a little space and a little room to cultivate my own social life. I think we've been better about that with our kids. We've been less up in their business, so I don't expect that to happen. I'm just telling you the truth that, like.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, no, I know. It's.
Penn Holderness
It's. It like the. The actual physical distance. I know it feels like a lot, but I don't think it's going to mean as much as you think it is.
Kim Holderness
I will say this. We've learned a lot through the process, and perhaps one day we'll do a full podcast with Lola so she can share what she had learned and what we would do. There's not much we would do differently because she did a great job. But I would say this. We've had some friends who have younger kids, and they say, oh, my gosh, I'm so stressed out. I, you know, my kid doesn't have the grades Lola had. Like, will they get in it? Yeah, your kid's gonna get in somewhere. This is what I've learned. There is a school for everybody. They are you. Lola was, like, very academically dialed in. But there are kids who chose a different path in high school, who. Great kids, but they chose to work a ton, and they. They chose to make other decisions about that. So. And they're going to. They're going to school. So, you know, so it may not be your first choice, but you're going to get in somewhere. So I would just say that to calm nerves. And so that's where I don't. I didn't hear anybody saying that. And so I just want to put that out there for people who are looking at the process. Everybody gets in somewhere. May not be your first choice, maybe like a small private school out of state, but like somebody you're going to get in somewhere.
Penn Holderness
The thing I've heard the most and that I've tried to say over the last four years, but I don't know how well received it's been to my. To the people I'm saying it to, are the school that you're going to go to college is going to be the school you're supposed to go to for college. And in a lot of ways, you have to let fate decide that. And that's counterproductive to everything. In a competitive universe and a competitive college applications process with multiple guidance counselors and people really like helping you out on all, all levels with. With school, with extracurricular activities, with ways to kind of sell yourself as a student because of how unbelievably competitive it is right now. In the end, it's going to be the school you're supposed to go to. And it's hard to, like, see. Don't you see it better now that it's over?
Kim Holderness
I guess my point in saying that was you don't have to do all the stuff that Lola did and you can get into.
Penn Holderness
So I guess I was just. Yes. Ending that, because I did hear that a lot.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
And, yeah, there's also. I mean, it's college. It's. It's something that some people want to do and some people don't want to Do.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, yeah. So if you. Yeah. That everybody gets in somewhere if you want to go and you don't have to go. Okay, moving on. Next fun fact. We ready to move on?
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Okay. We are this afternoon at the time you're listening this. In an hour and a half, we have a pitch meeting for our keynote address. You've heard us talk about this. We're working on a keynote right now. We have two. Okay. And we just want to. We're just in the mood to kind of hit the road. Right?
Penn Holderness
Yeah. We talked about this for a while and we've done some of these speaking engagements before, but they've always just been sort of one at a time. People have said, hey, are you interested in coming and talking to our group about blank? And then we would put together something that caters to what they're doing. Then we find out that there's this whole business where really you just tell them what you can talk about. It's already prepared. You don't have to change it every single time. And you show up and do it. That was like super attractive to me for a couple of reasons. Number one, after the ADHD book tour, I've really craved the connection that we've made with people that's not online. Like an actual. A handshake or a hug or like seeing people's eyes instead of their comments. And there's nothing wrong with the comments, but the comments. And number two, I am just going to put my 10 hat back on just briefly and say that I just think that there's going to be videos of us coming out in like a year that aren't us, that we didn't make, that's going to look just like us. There's going to be deep fakes of us. And so like, why are we. What are we doing here?
Kim Holderness
Can I also. Can I. I'm going to take off your tin hat for one second. I think the deep fake market, they're busy with actual celebrities. I don't think we're good enough for the deep fake market.
Penn Holderness
Okay. I hope so.
Kim Holderness
I will say though, there's going to be so much AI that we already are craving human connection. So, yeah, this is one way, a kind of a low lift way to do it. So because everybody has a conference, right. Everybody has a convention. So Penn has gone and given a beautiful keynote about ADHD and his sort of thoughts about how we should be handling it in the world. A little niche, but still, it's amazing.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. So we, we actually should. We mentioned that we actually Got some people to help us do this. I like to tell people, when we.
Kim Holderness
Got help, oh, a hundred percent. So we. I will say every other speech process, Penn and I would sit because somebody would hire us and say, we want you to talk about teamwork and reference Amazing Race. We would do that. And we had never gotten into bigger fights than when Penn and I had to write a speech together.
Penn Holderness
Right. So we needed a.
Kim Holderness
We needed somebody to save our marriage.
Penn Holderness
Right. But also someone who understood the market. So this a keynote. Specifically, this is what we're talking about, is when a convention of, like, a group of people are getting together and they've got, like, a weekend event and they need someone to give sort of the main speech. And what's that speech going to be about? And there's a whole economy of this because there's quite a few companies who do this. And these people that we hired, they know what they're looking for.
Kim Holderness
Right.
Penn Holderness
And it's not adhd, usually.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Which is fine. But so we kind of went through, like, what can we talk about?
Kim Holderness
Yeah. So we did the teamwork Amazing Race thing before. We've done some marriage communication and how that translates into workplace. We've done that before. What we came down to was creativity. It made sense because every business, every organization thrives on creativity. So we are teaching people in this talk about our creative process. And because it's us, we have music, there's going to be a keyboard out on the stage. We'll have some video examples, and it's going to be like stage performance, slash informative keynote. So we are so excited. And so we're pitching it to a group of agents today. So by the time you're listening to this, we hope they've said, wow, guys, that's amazing. Hired. So that's what we're doing today.
Penn Holderness
I really hope so. Otherwise, we're going to rerecord this podcast or give you an update that none of this actually worked.
Kim Holderness
We're coming right back.
Penn Holderness
Are you looking for a new podcast for your kids? Maybe something to hold their attention on car trips?
Kim Holderness
We know there are a lot of kids podcasts out there, but we found something we think you're going to love.
Penn Holderness

Well, Wild Interest is actually designed to help regulate kids nervous systems. Penn Holderness
So the creativity part of it, I do like, I'll give you like a little bit of a quick elevator speech on this without giving too much away. We get asked, the question we get asked the most is how do you come up with your ideas?
Kim Holderness
Right.
Penn Holderness
And the easiest answer is Kim notices something that's going on in real life. We go back and we talk about it and we find a way to make it funny. And it's that simple. Right. We look at what's going on and we try to make it funny, but there's a lot more inside that. And over the last 10 years, in order to be able to do what we do over and over again, we've been very intentional in what we go after when it comes to ideas. And there is an actual process. It's so funny. Kim, wouldn't you say we've been, we've been perfecting this without saying it out loud. And then what this keynotes help us do is like, realize what it is that we're doing because a lot of it was subconscious before.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. And it's definitely helped us refine that. We're super excited about it. I mean, we even thought, hey, is this our next book? But there's so many books on creativity and I don't know, it's great. And we, we love, we loved the book tour. We love meeting you guys. Also, it was pitched to us to do some sort of like, tour variety that's like, not for corporate America. That would just be like us going to theaters and stuff and selling tickets.
Penn Holderness
A lot of our friends do it.
Kim Holderness
That's like Taylor Kalmus and Charlie Barrons and they do a great job. They love it. I just don't know if my anxiety could handle selling. Being in charge of selling tickets.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
You know, like, yeah, I don't know, don't you?
Penn Holderness
I think if it was a product, if we had a product and you were like, oh, this is fun, let's go do this, then you might change your mind. But again, we don't have a. We don't have a product.
Kim Holderness
We don't have a product.
Penn Holderness
We have three minutes of products that we can do twice a week, which is what we do in our job. But that's not the same as this. You would actually be amazing on stage in that sort of world. I've always thought that you're. If you wanted to be a stand up comedian, you actually could be because you're very funny and your timing and your voice and your eyes and your delivery are spectacular.
Kim Holderness
You're very kind.
Penn Holderness
That doesn't mean that you should do it.
Kim Holderness
I know you can do it. I know that is one of those things you're very generous to say. That does not. It's not on my list of things I want to tackle in this lifetime. I wouldn't mind with you having some sort of format, but I do not want to at this point in my life. Next year could be different. But just being in charge of like. And then what if nobody shows up? Up.
Penn Holderness
I'm not worried about that. Then if no one shows up, then you cancel the show.
Kim Holderness
Speaking of show and we're just like really just pulling back the curtain here. We had a production company come to us in the first months of lockdown.
Penn Holderness
Oh, you mean 2020.
Kim Holderness
2020.
Penn Holderness
Yes, that's correct. It was like July.
Kim Holderness
They wanted to. Very flattering. Build a, like a game show around us. It involved music. It was great. We pitched that thing. We were in pitch meetings for over a year. Two years.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
And this is just such a, like a Hollywood thing. They're like, well, nobody's buying right now. It's Covid. Two years. Well, a different production company has come to us and so we are going to start pitching that this one I think is better. This is a better show.
Penn Holderness
What are your overall expectations of this, Kim? I'd love to know.
Kim Holderness
Oh, so I have such low expectations. Not because the people are so professional and it's. And you have heard their names before and they've put out. They create amazing television. I just don't have any. It would be like a fun cherry on top of my life. Not. I don't need it as a meal anyway. But it'll be fun if that happens and we'll tell you all about it. But the chances of it happening. Small.
Penn Holderness
It's small. And I mean, it might. So many people in this business, they'll do this for five years and then they'll land something and then it'll happen. And that's like a normal cadence for them because they're doing other things, which we are as well. But it just moves very, very slow, especially for people like you and I who get an idea, we put it together, and you get to see it tomorrow.
Kim Holderness
Right. Okay. Can I talk about. This is a good segue in terms of speed and efficiency. Yeah, sort of. Well, this is probably the thing in my life, besides my daughter. Daughter being very happy about where she's going to school. She's so happy that she's so happy.
Penn Holderness
She's so happy.
Kim Holderness
You guys, this is the thing I am most excited about in our life right now is we haven't signed another dotted line. So hopefully by the time you hear this, it's signed. So I guess we shouldn't say the name of the publisher, but we have. We are signing allegedly, an agreement for two children's books. And we're really excited because forever we've wanted to make ADHD is Awesome into a kid's books because we met so many of you in these book tours and you have these little precious babies. And our book is meant for. The one that's out on the shelves right now is meant for adults. So we're gonna. You know, Penn has already written it, the first book, and it's amazing and so welcoming. So that typically that process takes like two years. We had no idea how long the children's book process was. But because of the art and how special that art is, it takes two years. We are standing with a publisher who's going to fast track it and hopefully, fingers crossed, it's out fall.
Penn Holderness
That's what they're saying.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
And. And I cannot stress enough how impressive that is. And if it doesn't work, I'm not going to be heartbroken or anything. But if it does work, I'm going to be blown away because this. We've done two of these books before, and there's artwork and there's edits.
Kim Holderness
You mean two adult books?
Penn Holderness
Yes, we've done. But we've printed two books before. So, like, we know the challenges between. And then, you know, they'll do like a. What they call a strike where you have to get the actual papers and then you look at the papers and if it's a children's book, like, there may be a color that doesn't look good or. And then you've Got to send it back and do that again. And. And it definitely feels like old school, 1920s press when you're doing it. And part of that's kind of charming and wonderful, I would say. But, yes, I'm so excited, and I think these people get it. Like, they understand the need for it. Because it's hard to sell a book about ADHD sometimes.
Kim Holderness
They are. Okay, I will say this also, we were very flattered to be able to meet with, like, all of the big children's book publishers. I mean, we're a handful of them. They're the biggest ones. We felt very, very flattered to be in meetings. These are the publishers of most of the books you see on shelves right now. Let me tell you how good you should feel about buying a children's book. The care that goes into these things. And just the thought. And I just was. You mean selling one or just creating one and putting it on a shelf at just these publishers? All of them?
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
I was so blown away by the energy they put into them, and it got me so excited. I was like, this is our new job. We are children's book authors. We. We will make a video or two here and there, but this is what we're doing. We're just gonna be in the factory printing children's books. I'm so excited about this. Children's books are, like, really? I do a lot of reading, but when my kids grew out of the stage where we were, like, reading together every night, I got really sad.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. Cause they were fun to read. Right. And you learned. And then I think even after that happened, I found myself, I'd be reading a regular book and thinking, oh, man, can we go back and read this one?
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
So on that note, yeah, we do have a top five.
Kim Holderness
We love a top five. This week.
Penn Holderness
We've got top five children's books. And this is my list. Do you have your own list, or would you. Do you want to just.
Kim Holderness
I'll just add on to yours.
Penn Holderness
I didn't really, by the way, I asked Lola, and she gave me her top three.
Kim Holderness
Okay.
Penn Holderness
Oh, do. We could start with that one?
Kim Holderness
I. You know, you can start with that one.
Penn Holderness
So Lola's top three children's books that she. I just texted her, I said, what were your favorite three children's books? And she said, these are the three that I remember. Remember? And her three were corduroy.
Kim Holderness
Oh, yeah.
Penn Holderness
The bear.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Remember the bear?
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Fancy Nancy.
Kim Holderness
Anything Fancy Nancy.
Penn Holderness
Which is fantastic because we would read.
Kim Holderness
It like Fancy Nancy.
Penn Holderness
Right? It was all about the delivery. Yes. It was 100 about the delivery. The last one was the day the crayons quit, which she told me helped her get through the kind of emotions of. Of moving to a new house. Yeah. Which I thought was very sweet. And she still remembers that book.
Kim Holderness
You just never know what your kids are gonna like. I love. First of all, I love all those books.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Fancy Nancy.
Penn Holderness
But those were the ones she remembers. I don't think that was what I was expecting. Right.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
What are some that you remember that you really liked?
Kim Holderness
Paper Bag Princess.
Penn Holderness
Oh, my gosh. Lola.
Kim Holderness
Both of our kids really loved Paper.
Penn Holderness
Bag Princess, didn't she go find a.
Kim Holderness
A paper bag.
Penn Holderness
A paper bag and put it on, like, right afterwards.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. And she walked around and we kept it, like, in her dress up. Like, she just put on a paper bag. So. Yeah.
Penn Holderness
All right, so in my top five, I have three OLIs. That's outside looking in. That means you almost made it. I've got the Giving Tree.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Which was very sweet. I've got llama llama, Mrs. Mama, and I've got the Cods of Cape Cod.
Kim Holderness
Okay. My. My best friend Liz gave that to Lola because she's from Massachusetts. And I think that was a great, very specific regional book. But you read it with such care.
Penn Holderness
That was the reason I liked it, is I could use my really poor Boston accent.
Kim Holderness
Give us the Cod to Cape Cod. Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Going to Brewster A. Yarmouth. So the whole I was just doing the Pac my car thing, like, and I. I don't know why, but my voice got raspy when I read it. Like, I guess my inner Bostonian. He sounds like this, so.
Kim Holderness
Well, our kids would just giggle every time.
Penn Holderness
He's a chain smoker.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Okay, so my top five children's books. Number five, where the Sidewalk Ends. Shel Silverstein.
Kim Holderness
Just the collection of Shel Silverstein.
Penn Holderness
Well, he's got a bunch of books.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
But like a Light in the Attic was one of the books. But where the Sidewalk Ends was his first collection of poems, and so that was his. His 1. Not the specific poem, where the Sidewalk Ends, but the book that had all the collections. I still believe that was the start of my love affair with rhyming stuff. I thought Shel Silverstein was so creative, and every page was a different direction and it was wildly different, but also incredibly familiar at the same time.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
And it was all New York based and had a lot of, like, New York vibes to it. That's where he's from. And it made me, like, I Remember when, the first time I went to New York, I kept hearing those poems in my head.
Kim Holderness
Oh, really?
Penn Holderness
Yeah, just. Yeah. And the way that it was illustrated, there were like stoops and they were, you know, they were kind of places that reminded me in New York. So that was number five for me. It probably could have been higher. So number four is, is we. They didn't have this, I think, when my daughter was a kid. But I read it recently and I'm like, oh my God, I love this book. It's called Woohoo. You're doing great by Sandra Boynton. Yeah.
Kim Holderness
And we loved, by the way, we had every single Sandra Boynton board book.
Penn Holderness
So this one is just a chicken talking about how the week has been for this child and like, oh my gosh, things are upside down. You're feeling like, really discouraged. You know what? You're doing great. And this book has become wildly popular for adults to send to other adults who are going through issues. So it's like one of those co readable ones that the kids like. But also like, if you're giving it as a gift, bad breakup or your job sucks or whatever, people are sending this book to them.
Kim Holderness
And that is our, our secret hope with our book, the ADHD kids book, is that if your friend gets di. Their kid gets diagnosed or whatever, obviously you send it to them. But if you have a, A like an ADHD mom friend, like, it's sort of like a gift. It's a, It's a gift for her too.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. I love it, I love it, I love it. Okay, number three, I'm going old school. I'm going Goodnight Moon man.
Kim Holderness
That Goodnight Moon. Okay, when you publish a book, the only people who check this list on Amazon are the people who publish books. So they'll put out a, like a top Amazon, like a top 100 books thing. And you know, you just, you watch where your book is on that, that list for the first couple weeks after it's published. Right, but it's all books, right? It's like it's all books. Goodnight Moon, man, is always on that list, man. Get some of that Goodnight Moon money.
Penn Holderness
It's like the Bible. Then Goodnight Moon and then anything about.
Kim Holderness
Vampires and then anything about Taylor Swift.
Penn Holderness
And then anything about courts of beds and thorns. Thorns.
Kim Holderness
And then maybe. And then Brown Bear and then. Oh, and then Brown Bear and then maybe adhd.
Penn Holderness
That was so far down, like we could never touch Goodnight Moon.
Kim Holderness
We made the New York Times bestseller list three, almost four weeks in a row. But man, never Beat it. Good night.
Penn Holderness
Forget about it.
Kim Holderness
Okay, next.
Penn Holderness
Number two. Mo Willems wrote a book called Nuffle Bunny, which is essentially about a child losing their ish because they can't find their. Their lovey.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
And it just hit. It hit home. Like, it's about the parents and all they have to do to try to find this missing thing. And so our kids loved it. It. Because I think it shows. A, like, we get you. There's this thing that you love, and we're gonna tell a story about it. B, I hope they like the fact that their parents go through unbelievable depths to try to find this thing for them, to the point that they're, like, going almost insane themselves. And so, yeah, it just. It. It struck a chord to me.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
And our kids would keep reading, and every time they read it, I'm like.
Kim Holderness
It was.
Penn Holderness
Maybe. Maybe the kid just could have hung onto the damn.
Kim Holderness
No, it was Mo Willems and just the art behind it. Yeah, it was great. Okay. Number one. You and I are unified.
Penn Holderness
Number one is a book called Pete and Pickles. I don't know how many times my kids requested it, but I know that I requested it more maybe than they did, because by the time that book is over, I'm crying most of the time.
Kim Holderness
It's by Berkeley. Breathtaking.
Penn Holderness
Berkeley Breathed. Barely breathed.
Kim Holderness
Pete and Pickles is a. Berkeley Breathed. Breathed. And it's not a. Your aunt and uncle gave it to us.
Penn Holderness
Yes.
Kim Holderness
And we had never heard of it before, but if you have friends who have a new Bibi. We loved Pete and Pickles.
Penn Holderness
It's about a pig and an elephant, and I think they work at a circus.
Kim Holderness
Pete is a perfectly predictable, practical, uncomplicated pig. At least he was before a runaway circus elephant named Pickle stampeded into his life needing a friend. And it was just the sweetest. Yeah. We cried every time we read it. We love it. Never. 10 out of 10. I honestly. I'm gonna go find it and read it as soon as we're hanging up here.
Penn Holderness
I don't know if I can handle that kind of mental anguish today. It is a beautiful.
Kim Holderness
Honestly, I can't.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Because everything makes me cry now.
Penn Holderness
Oh, yeah. Were there.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, we were on the school website where she's. And they have all these videos of, like, what to expect. And they had all these move in videos. Like, what. How to, like, move in. And it was very, like, upbeat. Everybody's cheering, and she's watching it, and she's smiling, and I'm behind her. I'm like. I she can't turn around right now. Like, this is like. Yeah. I'm like, this is great. I'm so excited. I'm gonna go get some coffee. Yeah. Everything is just making me cry right now. It's okay.
Penn Holderness
Isn't that. I think you're probably handling it this better than me then I'm just pushing my feelings deep down.
Kim Holderness
What I've heard from friends is the, the lead up to it is probably worse than like, you get there and you're so. You've spent so much time stressing about it, then by the time you get there, you're like, okay, I'm ready for it. You're just like. And then you're good.
Penn Holderness
There's probably two different types of people, right. There's the people who process it that way and there's the people who bury it beneath layers of denial. And then when it actually happens, they. They cry for four days. And I'm afraid that might be me.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
But also, I don't know, I'm. It's every time I want to be sad, I look at her and she's just so damn happy. I know she's, you know, obviously I think the main thing she's happy about is that this process has come to a conclusion and, and there's got to be some relief there, right?
Kim Holderness
I. I feel like it. She. I will say this. She is and continues to be a very locked in, button up student. So I don't have perspective from. As a parent who had to kind of pull their kid through high school because that was not our experience at all. So in that way, I feel very, very, very lucky. But for her, she put a lot of pressure on herself to. She sacrificed a lot. You know, she would go out with friends, maybe Friday, maybe go to a football game. But at a lot of football games, she skipped to go like to play tennis and study. And there was always one full day a week and evening, like a Saturday where she just studied.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
And then Sunday she volunteered all day and. Because she loved it. She was. I mean, not. I mean it was not all because of this college. She's still doing it. I mean, she's still volunteering a ton and she's already into college, so. So she gave up a lot of traditional height and we worried. We worried. Hey, are you kind of missing out? So once that decision came, it was just like the relief of like four years of having like a flexed muscle.
Penn Holderness
I thought that was like a, like you were doing like a clincher butthole or something.
Kim Holderness
You just open it up and just the feces falls right out.
Penn Holderness
You know, this feels like a good.
Kim Holderness
Stopping point, you know, just like a good bm. Oh, your mind always said bm.
Penn Holderness
I know. It's the best.
Kim Holderness
Every time I say bm, I think of your mom because I just think it's like such a sweet, sweet way to reference it is she is the.
Penn Holderness
Only person who ever used it. And it's wonderful. It's a great word, especially if you kind of hold it back. And then once a year you're like, oh, did you have a bm?
Kim Holderness
It's just every time, every time, every time. Cause you know, everybody farts.
Penn Holderness
We're good.
Kim Holderness
You don't want to talk anything?
Penn Holderness
No, we're good. Let's. You know what, let's go outside and enjoy the snow for a few closing moments, and then we'll get ready for our pitch meeting where we try to convince people that we know what we're talking about.
Kim Holderness
An hour.
Penn Holderness
You guys should probably eat something.
Kim Holderness
Should probably put a bra on.
Penn Holderness
Let's eat, shower, put a bra on. I'm gonna have a bm. And then we're gonna come back here and we're gonna pitch this thing. We love you guys.
