Penn Holderness
I just don't think you guys understand how good this parking job was.
Kim Holderness
It was really.
Anne Marie Tapke
I really wanted. Okay, I want to hear more about the parking job before we decide.
Kim Holderness
Penhead. Picture of him.
Anne Marie Tapke
He's getting his phone out.
Kim Holderness
Hello, everybody, and welcome. I'm Kim Holderness.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, I'm. I'm Penn Holderness, and you already said welcome, so I'll say we're glad you're here for the Holderness family podcast.
Kim Holderness
You know, we get really. We just would like to get inside those important issues and really just get down and dirty.
Penn Holderness
Like, who says welcome and who says, we're glad you're here?
Kim Holderness
No.
Penn Holderness
Or other stuff.
Kim Holderness
The last week, we talked about Penn's colonoscopy. Just really down and dirty. I have to say thank you for so many sweet notes about how important it is. And I cannot believe how many people were messaging saying, oh, my gosh, I'm prepping right now. Like, and so it was really cool.
Penn Holderness
Even friends of mine, it shouldn't be surprising because we all basically turn 50 right around the same time. Just sending pictures from the room.
Kim Holderness
Yes.
Penn Holderness
A guy got his yesterday.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Who just sent me a video. I'm like, okay. And I'm not alone.
Kim Holderness
And if you stayed to the end of the video and the end of that podcast, you know that the doctor found six different polyps. The day after we sort of recorded the conclusion, the doctor called back, which is never, like, my favorite sign. It was all good. But one of the polyps that he snipped out of pen was the precancerous kind. And there was a name for it.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
That I forget.
Penn Holderness
Big long name. And he said, we're going to call. He gave a big, long name. It's interesting how doctors are rightly. It's a flimac or cranial floppy. You know, we just snipped it out. It's fine. They took tests of all of them. That was the main reason he called. So I know it sounds scary, but everything was negative. He said it didn't have cancer, but it was the type that they would call precancerous.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. But not anymore, because it's gone.
Penn Holderness
Right. See, like, my point is, like, you didn't have to say anything.
Kim Holderness
You could just, like, gone without your just not saying.
Penn Holderness
You didn't have to say that at all. You just been like, yeah, you don't have any cancer. You're fine. Like, come back and see me in five years. Which I said, yes, I will absolutely come back and see you in five years.
Kim Holderness
You know, this is such an important test, and all of those cancer screenings are so important. And we've never really been shy about talking about getting older. I mean, to the point where I think aging needs a rebrand, because we are not anti aging. We are pro aging. Because, I don't know. Pen, do you feel differently? I feel like life has gotten a lot better. Better with age. Do you disagree?
Penn Holderness
Like, on the balance? Yes. You know, I think there's a million variables to answer that question. I think if you put Everything together. Like, I'm happier now than I was 10 years ago. Is that what you mean?
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, I am. I just am. It's like life has gotten better. It's. It's not all better. Like, I wish my body was younger.
Kim Holderness
But you look.
Penn Holderness
I wish I. I wish I looked a little bit younger. I wish that I wasn't, like, closer to the end than I am to the beginning.
Kim Holderness
Now.
Penn Holderness
There's all those little things that I don't love, but on the other side, I, like, my kids are like normal people and they're fun and they're, you know, they're independent. And we're, like, seeing. We're starting to get this, like, glimpse of what they actually could be as human beings. And that's, like, incredibly rewarding. And, you know, I think there's just a freedom once you get to a certain age of just not feeling like you have to apologize for anything. Yeah, it's a nice feeling, too.
Kim Holderness
I sort of describe this very weird part of our life. It feels like the spring semester of my senior year of high school, because there's still tons ahead. There's still a ton of work to do ahead, but, like, some major decisions have been made. I've already accomplished a lot, but all the work that lies ahead, you kind of get to choose what that is. So, listen, I have a lot of life left to live, but at this point, I feel like I've earned the right to decide what type of work I wanna do, who I want to hang out with. So it's that spring semester, senior year sort of feeling. And I love that feeling. I would not want to be 20 years old again.
Penn Holderness
Yes. On the balance, yes. I wish my knees. I wish I could still, like, jump and play basketball and all these little things, but, yeah, on the average. Yeah.
Kim Holderness
I think you're caught up in all. All the physical stuff is valid.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Which is valid. But I feel like we're in better shape than we were in our twenties in some ways.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
You're in better shape than you were when I met you.
Penn Holderness
Really?
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Was I in, like, crappy shape when I mentioned?
Kim Holderness
No. No. But you were not here. No. You just didn't. You didn't have, like, a. You have, like, a six pack.
Penn Holderness
It's turning more into, like, a two pack now, but.
Kim Holderness
But it's still. It's a pack. Well, thank you.
Penn Holderness
There's a pack of something.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. I have to say that we. And you guys, if you've listened for long enough, you've heard us tell the Story. A former agent of ours. You know, we're kind of new to this side of the business, and, you know, we work with brands. It's how we, you know, we're lucky enough to get to pay bills that way. And we were given this saying, like, don't talk about how old you are, because brands don't want to work with people who are older.
Penn Holderness
Yes.
Kim Holderness
And we.
Penn Holderness
So we tried for a while to seem, like, younger. Really, like, for a very brief. We. We did. They were like hashtags and, you know, like on your vlogs, like, show your kids. Your kids are youthful. We didn't do that.
Kim Holderness
We didn't do that.
Penn Holderness
But that was like some of the suggestions that we got.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. Have another baby was actually a suggestion.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. Every baby's worth a million subscribers. Someone told us that.
Kim Holderness
You guys, I have to say, I love that we've been able to lean into this and because I feel like the audience, the people listening, you're aging with us. And what a gift. I mean, we get to see another day and we make content about things that are really happening to this. Can I say that the Years Old song series that you've created is some of the most popular stuff we've done. Should we play a few of these?
Penn Holderness
We could just to give a little bit of side information. It's the easiest thing we've ever done.
Kim Holderness
And it. And it has hits. It hits so hard.
Penn Holderness
It's the same song every single time. It doesn't rhyme.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
The only thing that rhyme. You know what rhymes. Years old. Rhymes with years old. Just over and over again. But it's. But it also. The last thing I want to say is it was written some by us, but almost entirely. Like after the first one, we got so many comments of how years old everyone else was, and they were so funny. We just kept taking a bunch of them and putting them into songs.
Kim Holderness
It's endless. I mean, honestly, we could commit our lives just to doing this series.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Anne Marie Tapke is here. Anne Marie, producer Amari Tapke is joining us. How many of these should we play?
Anne Marie Tapke
I think we just will play a few of them.
Kim Holderness
Let's play a few of them. Okay.
Penn Holderness
Hey, friends, tell me how old you are. I am. Turned down the car radio so I can see better. Years old I am. Why are these restaurants making us use QR codes? Years old I am. Holy crap. Bon Jovi is on the COVID of AR. Years old I am. I think 1980 was 20 years ago. Years old I am. After a period I hit the space bar. Twice years old I am. I take a photo of where I park at the airport. Years old I am. I take a picture with my phone and zoom it in to read the label. Years old. I am jealous because the neighbors redid their roof. Years old.
Kim Holderness
And scene. See, Weren't those great? Ann Marie Tapke, I hope you don't mind me saying happy birthday. You had a big one. The big ones end in zero. So you had one that ends in zero recently.
Anne Marie Tapke
I did. I did. I turned 40.
Kim Holderness
How do we feel about that?
Anne Marie Tapke
And I maybe had like, a tinge, like a couple days after turning 40, where I was like, wow, 40. But I can tell you leading up to the birthday. And I have friends that feel differently about turning. Getting older, big milestone birthdays, 40, 50, whatever it may be. Even people who are turning 30, like, kind of don't want to celebrate it, are kind of dreading it. I had a moment, I have to tell you guys. And Kim knows this and Pen, too. I called Kim, I think, the week of my birthday, two days before I turned 40, because I was making lunch and I had. They have a song, which we should also play a clip of. And it's. It's a parody of Justin Bieber. Sorry. And it's to the. It's rewritten as 40.
Penn Holderness
Well, it's too late now. Cause I'm 40. Yeah. I can't do that dance with my.
Anne Marie Tapke
Body.
Penn Holderness
It'S just too late now. Cause I'm 40 and I wish that I could just break it down but it's too late. Cause I'm 40 now 40, 40.
Anne Marie Tapke
And I love that song. In fact, I've known Pen and Kim for, like, 14 years. And I. When they did that song when I was working with them, and I was like, oh, that's so catchy and so fun and hilarious. And I've always loved it. But I think it hits different when you are, like, living it. I called her because I realized, even though I know these people and I've worked with them forever, that they are the reason why I'm not afraid to get older. Like, they're. They make it look so fun and so funny, and they really live it. And they. So they really are everything you see on these videos. And I just realized the reason why I was, like, singing a song about going out at 5:30 and being 40 is because of them. And I was, like, excited about it.
Kim Holderness
No, you were so sweet to call. So sometimes when you call at 5:30, I'm like, oh, something's wrong. But you Were a little upset, but it was really sweet. And I do that. I think now that I'm like, putting the pieces back together. We did that song, we put it out, and that's when the agent said, hey, maybe don't publicize the fact that you're turning 40. Like, don't put it out there.
Penn Holderness
Needless to say, we don't have that agent anymore.
Kim Holderness
We don't have that agent. And not just because of that. No.
Penn Holderness
But they remember at one point they were like, yeah, yeah. Kind of looking for a. Yeah.
Kim Holderness
And they just.
Penn Holderness
Younger vintage of wine.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. They wanted something different, which is totally fine. Everything's gone well. But I really do think that aging needs a rebrand because you're lucky to get older. And I think there's ways to do it better. And I'm deeply curious about it. It's, you know, I am a passenger on the flight. I'm not an expert in it at all, but I'm really, I go down the rabbit hole of all of these kind of mental health ways to, you know, keep your brain young, all of these things. And a big way is to play games.
Penn Holderness
Yes. So today is game day.
Kim Holderness
Game day.
Penn Holderness
We love game day. Annemarie is an aspiring network game show designer. And she comes. She comes up. She came up with a great one about a year ago called. It was called now and Then. Then we realized it was mostly then and it was amazing. No, but like, her, her enthusiasm and her creativity, it really shines through in this. And I'm sorry I'm moving around so much, but I can't find a comfortable place for this chair.
Kim Holderness
Okay.
Anne Marie Tapke
It's part of getting older, but it's okay.
Kim Holderness
That's fine. Okay.
Penn Holderness
Okay. Okay.
Anne Marie Tapke
So I gave Pen and Kim a cryptic assignment. I told them to give me a list of things they love about getting older. And then in the spirit of this is airing in March, and we're about to hit March Madness. So in the series of March Madness. Oh, we are going to be doing a bracket sweet 16. And we're going to put all these things head to head and we're going to come up with the best, best part of getting older.
Penn Holderness
I'm so on board with this.
Kim Holderness
Aging and sports, your two favorite topics.
Penn Holderness
But this whole, like, I've seen this format before in blogs and stuff, like something versus something. And like, the first round is really where. Where all the. Now, did you seed them, Anne Marie? Like, what I did.
Anne Marie Tapke
Spoiler. If you're a listener of the pod, you know, we've done a March Madness bracket before, and you know that I was. It was not received well by pen because I didn't seed them properly.
Penn Holderness
Wait, I don't remember this. Did I get upset about you not seeding?
Anne Marie Tapke
I think I had mashed potatoes and stuffing against each other in round one of the Thanksgiving sides.
Penn Holderness
Wait a minute. I wasn't the only person upset. You were upset too. Yeah, no, I was definitely. I was definitely upset. Like, how do you put. Yeah. Anyway. But I mean, That's a good 8. That's what a good 8, 9 matchup is. We all. It's a good sign of an eight night, nine matchup when you say, why are these two going against each other?
Anne Marie Tapke
Okay, listen, I did my best. There's a lot of unrelated things.
Kim Holderness
Okay.
Anne Marie Tapke
I did my best. Matchup number one, about the best part of getting older. You can be a pillow snob and no one judges you for it versus you can ask for help without feeling guilty.
Kim Holderness
I can tell you and I took this assignment in very different ways. I was very serious about my answers, and yours are probably very funny.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
Mine are very serious.
Penn Holderness
Well, we need a little bit of both in this podcast, so I think that's a good thing.
Kim Holderness
These are both fair and both very good.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
I obviously love that I. It's easier for me to ask for help, but that's what I put. But you're so right about being a pillow snob. I think if I were 20 and I brought two different pillows into a hotel, they would roll their eyes, but at my age, they don't dare. So I think pillow snob wins.
Penn Holderness
Okay. I am willing to say pillow snob is. Is pretty. It's like, I was thinking of you when I wrote that. Like, we get to a hotel and the bed is a secondary issue. They're like, what? You know, with the amenities, whatever. But if you don't have the proper number and firmness of pillows, that. That's something that we have. Like, I think maybe 10 years ago, you would have just slept.
Kim Holderness
Right. I could sleep on concrete.
Penn Holderness
And now that's a front desk call. Or in extreme cases, a trip to Target.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. We have. Which we've done.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Have instacarted pillows before. Talk about snob.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. So I feel like if we both agree, we. We move on. And if we. And if we disagree, then. Then Emery is the tiebreaker.
Kim Holderness
Yes.
Penn Holderness
Okay. I love it.
Anne Marie Tapke
Yes, we can do that. Okay. Matchup number two. Your gray hair is kind of blonde. If you squint, I think that's a stretch. But versus Versus you super don't care what other people think of you.
Kim Holderness
Oh, I super don't care what other people think. I super don't care.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, I think this. This is. This is like a 20 point blowout.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
The hair is nice, but although my.
Kim Holderness
Sweet hairstylist Katie, who I love, I was like, oh, look like my hair's like growing and blonde and she's like, that's gray.
Penn Holderness
Oh, your new hair.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. Well, not. I mean, it's just like a few.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
But I have a few grays. Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. You've been able to stave it off longer than most.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. But I do have a few. I do definitely have a few friends.
Penn Holderness
Okay. If you just stop coloring, what would your hair look like? Would it be.
Kim Holderness
It would be very few grays. But that's just genetically. My grandfather, when he passed, had like, black hair.
Penn Holderness
I know. That's why I just assumed he put shoe polish in it or something.
Kim Holderness
No, I mean, that's just one of those two.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. Great hair.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
All right. That's a blowout, Anne Marie.
Anne Marie Tapke
All right, matchup number three. 80s and 90s music is cool again and you know it all. Versus you can take your kids pretty much anywhere.
Penn Holderness
Ooh, that's like an 8, 9 matchup. That is a tight, tough matchup. That's. This is going to be a buzzer beater by someone.
Kim Holderness
I think being able to take your kids anywhere is such a relief when you think about how hard it was. We took our kids most places unless they were not invited, but. But it was just hard when they're toddlers. Like, one of you is not eating. One of you is at the party, is standing in front of the stairs. One of you're not having fun. When you're traveling with toddlers, and even, like, I mean, sometimes even elementary schoolers can be in a pain, but now, I mean, they're so fun to be around and they can kind of do their own thing. That's huge.
Penn Holderness
I could see. I could see you could take their kids anywhere. Making a deep run in this tournament.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
And for that reason. Yeah, listen, let's not discount the fact that our kids are listening to Kate Moss and Nirvana and we can look at them and say, yeah, been around for a while, guys. This was our music growing up. And there is some pride to that, I think.
Kim Holderness
Well, the best was we were on a. Lowell and I were on a little mini road trip and she said, you know what? I. She's like, I just feel like I was born too late. Your generation which always amazes me.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Your people used to go out and dance, right? And granted, she's still too young to go out to clubs probably, but she's like, can you. Can you play some of your music, Grandma? I turned on this, like, early 2000s club playlist. Oh, my God. So good, you guys. So good. I mean, and it inspired a video that we just shot the other day. But it was. I mean, all the. All the songs and the lyrics are horrendous, to be clear. Like, I was having to turn it down as if she hasn't heard that stuff before. But they just don't make music like that anymore.
Penn Holderness
They don't. Well, so I feel like we need.
Kim Holderness
To play some of it.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. Do you blame the person listening to it to a certain point? Because I've seen 15 year olds dance to this music, and they can. I just can't.
Kim Holderness
And so I think, oh, the new music.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. And so I'm like, well, there's no rhythm here. There is. It's just not my rhythm. It's not the way that I got used to listening to music.
Kim Holderness
You can't do it. Like the Roger Rabbit and MC him.
Penn Holderness
Right. So my son loves listening to Tyler, the creator, who is objectively a genius. The way that he puts stuff together, the way that he mixes things together. I find myself going like. Like, you can't see my face, but just trying to find, like, where is. Where's the beat? Where. Oh, there's the beat. And I get excited and then it goes away. And then it goes away into like a.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. And so, I mean, I think you could. Yeah. I think they're out of clubs doing that stuff, but, man, I never even had a gym membership in my 20s because I just went out and danced.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. Oh, God, those are the days.
Penn Holderness
Emery is about. About a decade below us, and I think she probably identifies with our. Our music maybe more than the generation in front of her. Right.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Anne Marie Tapke
I'm an old soul, too, so I feel like I. All the music you guys like, I like. So.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
All right, so we. The music's cool again. Is great, but, Kim, do you agree that. That we can take our kids anywhere is pretty amazing.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. You guys, that's the winner. And if you're listening to this and you have little ones and diapers and just know that it gets so much better.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Anne Marie Tapke
Oh, my gosh. It does get better. My kids are younger than, obviously, PC and Lola. But we. Okay, this is random, but we did like a corn. Like a corn maze last fall. And that would have been like nightmare fuel a couple of years ago for our family. Someone would have to have peed, someone would need a snack. Like, it would have been terrible. And we're finally at the age where like, we all did it and we all had fun and my husband looked at each other and we're like, oh my gosh, we're here. We've arrived.
Penn Holderness
Isn't that amazing? Yeah, and it gets even better once. Once cars are introduced and. And other things. As long as you don't sign your kids up for travel, sports.
Kim Holderness
Just don't do that. Just don't do that. More on this after these words.
Penn Holderness
Are you looking for a new podcast for your kids? Maybe something to hold their attention on car trips?
Kim Holderness
We know there are a lot of kids podcasts out there, but we found something we think you're gonna love.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, while most of those podcasts are made and hosted by adults, we found one that's for kids. Made by kids and hosted by kids.
Kim Holderness
Wild Interest.
Penn Holderness
Wild Interest. It is super well produced with original music, great sound design, and a whole audio mission designed to calm and regulate kids.
Kim Holderness
You know, we talk a lot about ADHD in our podcast and one really important thing you can do to thrive with ADHD is regulate your nervous system.
Penn Holderness
Absolutely. When people get dysregulated, even people without adhd, actually, Kim, it can snowball and make regular life, well, difficult. Well, Wild Interest is actually designed to help regulate kids nervous systems. There's calm music and thoughtful subject matters. And the vocal, vocal tone and cadence are all made with the same result in mind. Calm and happy kids.
Kim Holderness
Parents. Try the Wild Interest podcast. You'll be hooked. And it's in its second season, so there's tons of episodes to enjoy.
Penn Holderness
Wild Interest follow wherever you get your podcasts.
Kim Holderness
Hey Penn.
Penn Holderness
Yeah?
Kim Holderness
You know I love a good spring refresh. Deep cleaning the house, putting winter clothes away, and getting prepped for the warmer days ahead.
Penn Holderness
No, I remember just this weekend carrying all the bulky jackets up to storage.
Kim Holderness
These. These things make all the difference. But some could argue the most satisfying is refreshing your bed.
Penn Holderness

All right, match number four. You have enough life experience to know how to handle most situations versus you no longer feel guilty about resting.
Penn Holderness
Those are, those are double Kims.
Kim Holderness
Those are double Kims there. I think having the life experience to handle most situations has been has proven to be come in handy. Lola was reading the news yesterday and saw there's a lot of talk about perhaps an impending recession. Maybe we're already in one. There's all these numbers that you need to, you know, it's a numbers thing. And she's going into college and she, she's like oh my gosh, if, if we go into a recession, how am I gonna find a job. She's really way ahead of herself. And I tell her recessions. I. I could say I'm like, the last big recession. 2008 is the reason we're here today. Because I started a business. Because there are so many layoffs in the news business, I felt the need to take control of how we earned money. They typically last, like a year or so. And so I was able to talk her through how we've made it through recessions before. There were lean times, but we've made it through our countries made it through. And she was like, oh, okay. And then she went off to school. So that was nice.
Penn Holderness
When is this podcast is airing? We're taping this on a Wednesday. This podcast is airing in about six days. This could be very, very topical in six days.
Kim Holderness
Oh, yeah.
Penn Holderness
What you just.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. But I will say also. And it's not ideal. I mean, we know lots of people who are. It's. It's. I'm not. I'm not sugarcoating anything.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
It's just that I've lived through it as. As somebody who is responsible for paying mortgage and insurance and car payments and stuff. Like, we've already done that. It was very scary.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Because you. You were. There were rounds of layoffs where you were working, but we made it.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
And so having that life experience, I could be like, we're good. We're fine.
Penn Holderness
I think it's a fantastic example of why it's great getting old. And I would pick that over the napping thing, even though I know you love a nap. I don't nap.
Kim Holderness
No, just resting.
Penn Holderness
I don't really rest either.
Kim Holderness
Like, that's untrue.
Penn Holderness
Okay, tell me, tell me.
Kim Holderness
You will watch eight hours of commercial free football.
Penn Holderness
Is that resting? Yeah. Okay, so just like.
Kim Holderness
Okay, you will. Resting. I count that as resting.
Penn Holderness
I thought you meant like. Like lying on your back and sleeping. This is different.
Kim Holderness
Resting is like.
Penn Holderness
Good point.
Kim Holderness
You will watch the hell out of some basketball.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
No, that's true. I will. Less. Less than before, though. To me. Like, I think I'm resting. Personally, I. I'm resting in some ways less right now. There. You're right about the football, but it never gets all the way to seven hours. And this is just like. No, it. Like, it doesn't. Like, I'll be. I'll fold laundry. I'll go. Yeah, take the kid outside. Like, I'll do something like that.
Kim Holderness
Take the kid.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, I'll take the kid outside. Make him do something.
Kim Holderness
Walk the kid.
Anne Marie Tapke
Take him for a walk.
Kim Holderness
Feed the kid.
Penn Holderness
I. Yeah, I still feel the need to rest more. I'll put it that way.
Kim Holderness
Okay. No fair. You do. You boo.
Penn Holderness
And so. But like, I. But if I did, I. I guess I wouldn't really feel bad about apologizing for it.
Kim Holderness
No, you don't.
Penn Holderness
So what do we think?
Kim Holderness
I think getting older and having life experience wins. Ding, ding, ding, ding, dinger.
Anne Marie Tapke
To me, that had more the wiener explanation. Yes. All right, match up number five. I know myself mentally better than ever, versus I feel like I'm in better physical shape than I was in my 30s when I was too busy to focus on my health.
Penn Holderness
Those are double chemists, right?
Kim Holderness
Probably.
Anne Marie Tapke
They're double chem.
Kim Holderness
Double chem, huh? What do you think?
Penn Holderness
Well, I think I started the podcast explaining that there's a lot of ways I don't feel like I'm in better physical shape, but I definitely know myself better mentally. I can't tell you how much I've learned about myself mentally in the last 10 years. This podcast has helped me. Therapy has helped me. Reading books and listening to experts to talk about how the brain works and getting it out there helps me. Talking to you openly about things that we didn't really get all the way through. Like, I 100% love the fact that I know myself better now, and it was probably high time I got to know myself better.
Kim Holderness
Oh, I love that high time. Yeah, I love that high time. I. I will agree. Good times. I will agree. I think I can identify what's going to trigger me as a. Trigger is like a weird word, but something that's going to cause me to spin out or a situation that I should avoid. I know that so well now, and I just don't engage. Yeah. So that I think that's valuable gift. So that's one that could make a deep run.
Penn Holderness
That could be a final four. We'll see.
Anne Marie Tapke
It might be.
Penn Holderness
That could cut down the nets. I'm gonna use a lot of references.
Kim Holderness
Guys, sports terms.
Penn Holderness
Guys.
Anne Marie Tapke
Sports, sports. All right, matchup number six. You can start to at least think about retirement or you're in a sweet spot with your kids home, but they're still independent.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, those are great. Definitely. Like, thinking about retirement and like, being able to sort of grasp it a little bit is a nice feeling. And I wrote that one. I like yours better. I like the. This like the sweet spot.
Kim Holderness
We are in the sweet spot because.
Penn Holderness
Because we. We are. And the sweet spot lasts longer than you think.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Right. Like, it lasts. Especially if you have multiple kids. You can, like, really stretch it out.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. So they're home, but they're also independent and they wipe their own butts.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. So, yeah, that's sort of similar to that. You can take your kids anywhere.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, very similar. So the retirement, ironically, and we. We'll see how this ages. We had a meeting with our, you know, you do like, a yearly financial planner and, you know, laid it out, and we're working until we're 67, you know, as one does. And then, like, the market took a little bit of a poop, and I was like, let's just not look. We have. We have until we're 67. Let's not look.
Penn Holderness
Because y'all. Anyone who has retirement people, they give you this app, and so they give you, like, a percentage of success stress test. And that stress test looked different a week ago than it does today. I just say that.
Kim Holderness
Honey, we are still. So far. Let's not. We're not going to worry about it.
Penn Holderness
I wrote that down. Not thinking about what's going on right now. Might be. I think, yours. Yours not only wins yours like that one.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Is that could be like, the circa, like, 2008. Gonzaga. That makes, like, a deep Cinderella run in this tournament.
Kim Holderness
Gonzaga. Where is Gonzaga?
Penn Holderness
Do you really. Do you want me to tell you? You want to try to guess?
Kim Holderness
I don't like to.
Penn Holderness
Do you know where it is, Anne Marie?
Anne Marie Tapke
I don't.
Penn Holderness
Okay, guys, guess where Gonzaga University is.
Kim Holderness
Is it. I always get Gonzaga and Villanova. Is it in Philly?
Penn Holderness
So no. Okay. There is a high school called Gonzaga in Maryland.
Kim Holderness
Okay. Is it not there?
Penn Holderness
No.
Kim Holderness
Where is it?
Penn Holderness
It's close. It's in Seattle.
Anne Marie Tapke
So close.
Penn Holderness
But you had. It's on a coast.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
And it's in the northern percentage of the continental states.
Kim Holderness
It is interesting when you have a senior and I didn't realize this, the colleges send you a lot of, like, marketing materials. Colleges spend a lot of money marketing themselves to seniors. And I feel like we got stuff from Gonzaga.
Penn Holderness
It's supposed to be an amazing campus. Like, for all the reasons Seattle is beautiful and wonderful.
Kim Holderness
I took those. I have to say, I'm sorry. Gonzaga. Anything that I looked for that was like, on the opposite coast went directly into.
Penn Holderness
You just didn't even tell Lola about it.
Kim Holderness
Well, if she wanted to find it and if she wanted to make that discovery and go visit, she could. But I wasn't going to present her with the option.
Penn Holderness
Mommy, Stanford's. No.
Kim Holderness
No.
Penn Holderness
Nope. Their mascot is a tree.
Kim Holderness
What is he? What's even that. What was that? No, no. To be clear, I did not hold her back from applying anywhere. I didn't.
Penn Holderness
There's plenty of nice.
Kim Holderness
Strongly discouraged her.
Penn Holderness
Stanford doesn't need Lola as much as we need Lola on this side of the country.
Kim Holderness
Exactly. Spine. Okay.
Anne Marie Tapke
Match number seven. This is a double pen.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
Okay.
Anne Marie Tapke
All right. You get really excited about basic example. I still have a picture in my phone of the best parking job I ever did.
Penn Holderness
Okay. Love it.
Anne Marie Tapke
Versus you get a lot less fake and you start telling people the truth. If you get invited somewhere and you don't want to go.
Kim Holderness
Oh.
Penn Holderness
So those may have both been written about me, but one of them was about me and one of them was more about Kim. And I've been very proud of her in the way that she has.
Kim Holderness
She has drawn it. I hate. I hate people overuse the term boundary. Like, I'm going to put up a boundary. I'm like, a boundary.
Penn Holderness
Well, if you say it like that, it's way better a boundary.
Kim Holderness
But if sometimes people will. And first of all, I love to be invited. And I am trying to say yes more and go more. But sometimes I'm like, God, that sounds like a lot of people will be there. And it sounds like it's late and.
Penn Holderness
You'Ll say that out loud to people.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. So I'm not lying anymore. So I kind of like that.
Penn Holderness
I just don't think you guys understand how good this parking job was.
Kim Holderness
It was I really wanted.
Anne Marie Tapke
Okay, I want to hear more about the parking job before we decide.
Kim Holderness
Penn has a picture of it getting his phone out. Great. So we went to go see the Savannah Bananas in downtown Durham at the where the Durham Bulls play. This amazing ballpark. It is in downtown Durham. There is a parking garage conveniently located across the street from the state.
Penn Holderness
It's kind of far.
Kim Holderness
It's not all that far. The issue is that when you're leaving, it does take a long time because everybody's leaving. But that's what I did because I'm a normal person. So I went to the parking garage. We got there on the later side. So I was kind of at the top of the parking garage. It is kind of a buzzkill. But that's what you do as a human and you just pay the 20 bucks. Penn was arriving separately. Cause he had to go pick up my nephew. He said he found a spot right in front of the stadium on the street. I'm like, there were no spots. There was only like compact car spots. And at the time he was Driving this massive Infiniti QX like 9000 gas.
Penn Holderness
Guzzling environment wrecking error machine.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, it was. It was a beau. Full car, albeit older, but it was massive. And he goes, how long did it take you to do this park here?
Penn Holderness
PC said it took about a little bit more than a minute, but it felt longer because it was very awkward.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
So many turns.
Kim Holderness
And I think this story doesn't work without the picture. So Pen is looking.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, just hold, please. I was looking for.
Anne Marie Tapke
We will publish the picture. As you guys know, we put a blog post out about our pods. We'll put. We'll put the picture in the blog post.
Kim Holderness
But.
Anne Marie Tapke
Okay, Pen, I'm about to blow your mind right now.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Anne Marie Tapke
Because if you recall, this was a quarterly outing that we all had tickets to go to. So I was at this game.
Kim Holderness
Yes.
Anne Marie Tapke
You didn't all get to sit together because it was general admission. We didn't know that going in, but it was fine. Pen. We drove past. I think we were also late for some reason, or maybe it was when we were leaving. Steve knew that was your car. I saw the car. He was like. He goes, is that Penn's car right out front? And I remember he was so impressed, but also confused because it looked like it wasn't even a spot. That's how good of a spot it looked like you.
Kim Holderness
It's like you had to drop it. Here it is, Emery.
Penn Holderness
It's in your phone. You can take a look at it if you'd like.
Anne Marie Tapke
Hold on.
Kim Holderness
In 20, 23 and last deal day. Oh.
Anne Marie Tapke
Yes. Okay. Yes, Pen, we saw your car.
Kim Holderness
It looks like. And tell me you didn't hit the other cars.
Penn Holderness
I mean, there may have been like a couple of tiny, like tippy taps. They weren't like it wasn't like some. You have to kind of rock it a little bit in order to kind of. But you. But there was no marks on it. I was. I was worried that there'd be like a note on my car saying, like, how dare you. But I really wanted this spot.
Anne Marie Tapke
You guys. He put this, as he said, gas guzzling terror machine, environmental terror machine in a compact space. I mean, this was a compact space for sure.
Kim Holderness
And to be clear, there's a minivan ahead of him. So it's not like everybody else was abiding by it. But I'm such a rule follower. I'm not going to put my, like, little mini SUV in a compact space because I'm like, that's truly not a compact car.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Oh, my gosh.
Penn Holderness
So this doesn't. We don't have. This doesn't have to win. There's other basic stuff that we get excited about though, right?
Kim Holderness
I mean, that's what we celebrate in the years old song. Yeah, basically.
Penn Holderness
So we've got that versus. I don't remember the other one.
Anne Marie Tapke
You don't have to be fake. You can tell people the truth.
Penn Holderness
Oh, yeah, that's a. This is a tough one. What do you think? Like, why don't we let Anne Marie break the tie here?
Kim Holderness
Break the tie.
Penn Holderness
I won't be mad.
Anne Marie Tapke
I mean, we just spent a long time talking about this parking job, so I think we're still pretty excited about it.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, we are. I mean, I am.
Kim Holderness
Okay.
Anne Marie Tapke
I really like. I really like being honest with people. Kim does a great job of this, but I think that knowing that the basis of a lot of what you do is getting people pumped about basic, like turning 40, I have to say.
Kim Holderness
Okay, fair.
Penn Holderness
Well done.
Kim Holderness
I think we need to rename our podcast Pumped About Basic. Ish.
Penn Holderness
Yep.
Kim Holderness
Okay, next.
Anne Marie Tapke
All right. The final match in the sweet 16. Your kids can be designated drivers in a pinch versus and Penn's gonna have to explain this one a little more. You don't have to pull punches when playing your kids in sports.
Penn Holderness
Oh, yeah. I, I just. So, just for so long when I was playing tennis with Lola, I would have to like, hit it into the net. Know wouldn't win. Yeah. So I didn't like, there's a certain level of competition that you have to have against your kids. And I'm at the point now where I. They are better than me at everything. Literally. Like PC has just recently gotten better than me at basketball, which is really annoying. Like, I may have been better than him when I was in high school, but he's like, I'm. I'm getting old and he's getting tall and I, I'm going all out against him when I play. And same thing with Lola when I play tennis. And there's something about that is really cool to me.
Kim Holderness
Oh. And then the other one was. Oh, Dee Dee. Have we used this?
Penn Holderness
I used it at a hockey game with Lola one time. I wasn't like drunk, but they. I got one beer and one beer. There is like 26 beers.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. So, yeah. And we are very careful about if we have one drink. We uber or whatever. Yeah. You know, we did that Christmas evening because we had a glass of wine at the in laws house.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
That's pretty great, you guys having your kids drive you home after a Glass of wine. Yeah, I'm gonna go that.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, let's go with that.
Anne Marie Tapke
Love it. All right, we're gonna go. I think the next section of this Elite Eight, Final four, and the final championship, they're gonna go pretty quick because we're pretty familiar now with all these categories.
Penn Holderness
That's right.
Anne Marie Tapke
So the Elite Eight is being a pillow snob and not getting judged for it versus not caring what people think, which is very similar.
Kim Holderness
Not caring what people think, I think is just, like, streamlined that you like.
Penn Holderness
The more general than the more specific.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Okay, let's do it. Not not caring what people think.
Anne Marie Tapke
Perfect. All right, the next one about. You can take your kids pretty much anywhere, and then having life experience to know how to handle situations.
Kim Holderness
This is tough. What do you think?
Penn Holderness
I mean, the life experiences are great, but do you remember when you couldn't take your kids anywhere and you had, like, went to, like, two. You went to, like, two places. You went to two restaurants, and you went to, like, the grocery store where they could go up and down the stairs. The other one is deeper and more thoughtful, But I'd really like to. The fact that I can take my kids in.
Kim Holderness
Okay, we're gonna. Amory, break the tie.
Anne Marie Tapke
Taking your kids anywhere.
Kim Holderness
Okay.
Penn Holderness
Because she can't do that yet. You're getting there, though.
Anne Marie Tapke
I. Yes, actually, I can take. We can go most places, and our kids are. I mean, I feel like we're lucky. We can go to, like, some nicer restaurants, and they're.
Kim Holderness
No, they're very. They're good kids. Yeah.
Anne Marie Tapke
I know myself mentally better than ever versus that sweet spot of when your kids are home. But they're independent.
Penn Holderness
The knowing yourself mentally is knowing yourself. Ballerina. That's a baller one. Yeah, let's go with that one.
Anne Marie Tapke
Okay. And then you get excited about basic ish, like parking jobs or your kids being designated drivers.
Penn Holderness
Oh, well, one of those is going.
Kim Holderness
To be a surprise final Forest kids being designated drivers.
Penn Holderness
You want the designated. Okay, we're going to designated drivers. Parking job. You had your moment.
Anne Marie Tapke
You had your moment.
Penn Holderness
All right, we're in the final four.
Anne Marie Tapke
We're in the final four. All right. Go into the championship. You don't care what people think of you. Versus you can take your kids pretty much anywhere.
Kim Holderness
Don't care what people think of you.
Penn Holderness
Yep, that's in the championship. I think I know where this is headed.
Anne Marie Tapke
Knowing yourself mentally better than ever or your kids can be designated drivers.
Penn Holderness
In a pinch, kids can be designated drivers.
Anne Marie Tapke
In the championship of the best thing about getting older. You super don't care what people think. Or your kids can be designated drivers.
Penn Holderness
Ladies and gentlemen, it is a Cinderella story.
Kim Holderness
No, it's your kids designated drivers. I think it's. You don't care what people think. No. You don't care what people think. Okay. Okay. You break the. Emory.
Penn Holderness
Oh, no, she's here. Emery's breaking the title for the championship. This is exciting. Yeah.
Anne Marie Tapke
Okay.
Kim Holderness
Wow.
Anne Marie Tapke
This is a full circle moment that I did. Not an engineer in any way, and I promise. But my favorite lyric that Pen Holderness has ever written is, knowing that you are not cool is very liberating. And I think that's people not caring. Not caring. People think of you.
Kim Holderness
Yay.
Penn Holderness
I mean, it is liberating to have a designated driver, but I think you're right. I think you're right.
Anne Marie Tapke
It's also liberating.
Kim Holderness
Yay. Yeah. Guys get Grow old and don't.
Penn Holderness
And. And it just happens. Yeah, it just happens.
Kim Holderness
Well, we had a doctor on a while ago who explained sort of hormonally what's happening with women in menopause. That makes it like, you run out of Fs. Your filter literally drops away. So I think that. I mean it. You probably happens in men, too. So, like, I've. My filter in my capacity to care what people think of me has disappeared. And I love it.
Penn Holderness
This was fun.
Kim Holderness
This was fun.
Penn Holderness
We have a champion.
Kim Holderness
We have a champion. That is the best thing about getting older. Thanks for the game, Anne Marie.
Anne Marie Tapke
Anytime, you guys. Anytime.
Kim Holderness
Thank you.
Penn Holderness
So looking back on this, were there any. Any things that you were surprised did not make it deeper, or any things that you. That Emory. That were some of your favorite examples? I. You're not really getting older. Like, we. I guess everyone's getting older.
Anne Marie Tapke
To be honest, I thought the resting one was gonna go further.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Anne Marie Tapke
Because I do feel like as you get older, it's, like, more acceptable to be like, oh, that's a little late for me, or, I'm a FOMO person. I hate going to bed early, especially if people are hanging out. But I've gotten better about it if I'm tired.
Kim Holderness
Wow. I can't tell you how little FOMO I have.
Penn Holderness
I'm glad that you said that. I think that's why I don't rest as much. Like, I could rest, but, you know, it's the. It's Saturday afternoon, and some guy says, hey, do you want to play tennis? And I could just sit on my butt, but I, like, would. Then I would miss the tennis game. With the boys. So maybe that's like going back on where I was being averse to talking about rest. I think I choose not to rest.
Anne Marie Tapke
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
I haven't gotten to that part of. And I will. I'm sure.
Kim Holderness
I. I also would offer that the basketball in the sports you watch is resting.
Penn Holderness
Okay, that's interesting.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
So resting is. Is going out and getting physical activity.
Kim Holderness
No. That you watch.
Penn Holderness
Oh, no, I'm. Oh, yeah, for sure. That is. I was just talking about, like, other stuff.
Kim Holderness
Oh, yeah.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Okay.
Anne Marie Tapke
Pen, do you think people with ADHD don't rest?
Penn Holderness
Well, yes.
Anne Marie Tapke
On. On a whole.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. I. I don't know. I don't know. I don't. Yeah. I think that, like, the spacing out and playing video games or watching a bunch of tv, I don't think that's good rest. I'll put it that way. That is your. Your brain is being stimulated constantly when you're watching those things. So. Yeah, I think that we don't turn our brains off enough. For sure. That's a good point.
Anne Marie Tapke
Yeah. I would agree with that. With just the. I mean, I'm not a doctor, but the people that I know that have adhd, I. They're always going. Even the inattentive ones, they're always doing something.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. I think inside their heads, they're going. Okay. Anne Marie Tapke, thank you so much for this game. You're welcome to stay for my favorite part of the podcast, where Penn makes a top five list of random things. And today's top five list are the top five things Gen X will have in their retirement homes. Yes. What do you get?
Penn Holderness
Number five? Pickleball. I don't know many Gen Xers who haven't at least kind of dipped their toe in the pool when it comes to pickleball. Pickleball. Correct.
Kim Holderness
Correct.
Penn Holderness
Is that something that. That you would want in your retirement home?
Kim Holderness
Absolutely.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, it's gonna be very busy place. Poppin.
Penn Holderness
Okay. Very good. Okay. Number four. And this is gonna be. This is a. A weird one, but I just feel like we're all gonna want conch shells. They're not around anymore.
Kim Holderness
Oh. Like a memento.
Penn Holderness
And it's like one of those things that like. Like once we all get dementia, that'll remind you of the beach because you'll, like, put the. You put them up. Do you guys know. I don't know if you know about conch shells. They. They're basically. They look like ears, and if you stick them up to your ear, they give you the sound of the ocean.
Kim Holderness
And they're very hard to find these days.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. And, I mean, maybe this has to do with, like, all of my boomer friends have conch shells in their retirement homes. Even if they're. They could be in the mountains and they have conch shells.
Kim Holderness
Okay.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Okay. Okay.
Penn Holderness
So, yeah, maybe that's a bad one.
Kim Holderness
Maybe that's okay. But this is your list. Are they.
Penn Holderness
No.
Anne Marie Tapke
You've. Like, now I want to go down the rabbit hole. They really are going extinct, these shells.
Kim Holderness
I don't know. They're harder to find.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, they're way harder.
Kim Holderness
My daughter's obsessed with seashells, and she told us the whole story about how the warming ocean temperatures and there's some sort of, like, the acid balance and it's breaking down the shelves that are in the ocean, and. Yeah. So they're harder.
Penn Holderness
We found that we were on vacation somewhere. I can't remember if it was in North Carolina or somewhere else. And we walked down a walkway, and there were, like, a million conch shells for sale.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
And I was like, that's pretty cool. We used to find those all over the place. Like, what are these, like, a dollar? And the lady was like, $40.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
And I was like, oh, well, crap.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
That's a lot of money. Okay. Number three. A CD player.
Kim Holderness
Yes. Boombox baby.
Penn Holderness
I think that a CD player is going to replace the. Like, people have record players now, and vinyl is great, but I feel like there's something about CDs.
Kim Holderness
Oh, yeah.
Penn Holderness
That just take me back, like, holding it and looking at it and putting it in and listening to it. And that show paradise that we watched, Remember the president had, like, a CD player, and it was. Oh, my God, it's good.
Kim Holderness
It's so. Well. And it could verge on being, like, a little cringy, corny, but it's really good, you guys.
Penn Holderness
I don't want to give too many spoilers, but it. There's a crisis, and they assemble the.
Kim Holderness
Best in their field.
Penn Holderness
They do. They have to.
Kim Holderness
And we know how Penn feels about that.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. I'm just saying.
Kim Holderness
Just saying. Yeah, you should watch it. Yeah. But your brother will be so excited because doesn't he still have all the CDs?
Penn Holderness
Yeah, I mean, I'm mainly doing this for him. I'm hoping that he, like, he has a tower in his house and he has CDs. I mean, he's a DJ. And so I think, is it CDs or MPS or something? The. The new players you can actually scratch CDs. Like, yeah, like you can do that.
Kim Holderness
And so, DJ Dale, DJ Dale.
Anne Marie Tapke
I hope you Gen Xers leave those players for the millennials, because I also have all my CDs still.
Kim Holderness
Okay. When we die, we'll leave them for you. I'll leave my.
Penn Holderness
Well, guys, number two is an Atari. And I'm not talking about, like, I'm not talking about some Xbox thing that you turn into an Atari. I'm talking about a joystick with.
Kim Holderness
A joystick with a red button.
Penn Holderness
Yep. And if the. If the game doesn't work, you have to blow on it and put it in.
Kim Holderness
Yes.
Penn Holderness
And you play Kaboom. Like, you have the little. The dial.
Kim Holderness
You play Donkey Kong.
Penn Holderness
Yep.
Kim Holderness
You guys. Yes. Pong Pong.
Penn Holderness
Yep. I think that. I think we're gonna have like, weird, arcane 1980s electronics in our retirement home.
Kim Holderness
I mean.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, guys, number. The number one thing Gen X will have in their retirement home are depend undergarments. And I'm not sponsored by them. I just know talking to even the healthiest people that I know who are getting older, they're themselves some.
Kim Holderness
Stop it.
Penn Holderness
Or there's just stuff happening. And like, one of my uncles, like, told me about it, showed it to me, was like, super proud to talk about it. So I think it's time to just lean into and accept that. Like, that that's happening more often than not.
Kim Holderness
I was just joking that because, you know, we want to hang out with you guys forever, that we're going to be working with brands in the future and it's going to be depends which, hey, no shade. We've love, love what they do, but we're going to have the Gen X. It's going to need it to be like a thong. Like a Gen X thong. Depends. Because we were. Because of the thong song and how we're going to be doing that. We're going to be in our 70s and I'm going to be doing a thong song parody with depends on playing mahjong. Playing mahjong with the thong song with depends on it. Depends on the song rhyme. Yeah, yeah. And no shit. And no problem. You know, the people. And I think Emory pointed this out. The people on the front of those packets look really happy, right? They look really happy.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. Because they've taken care of their situation.
Anne Marie Tapke
Because we're sharing. I went ahead and sent you a picture one time I took at the store of one of those happy people because I was just like, you know, I was drawn to them. I was like, they look like they've got life figured Out.
Kim Holderness
They have life figured out and. Exactly. This guy. This guy. All of these people look so happy and honestly. Interesting. Interesting marketing decision to put, like, as a. Like, these are really happy people, and they're putting their faces and everything on there as opposed to just. Just like, focused on the junk.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Just showing what they look like. Yeah. But I bought. I more like this model booked this gig, and they were like, yes. What's it for?
Penn Holderness
That model's younger than me.
Anne Marie Tapke
Yeah, that model's 35, for sure.
Kim Holderness
Hey. But hey, you never know when you're gonna need it. And I'm glad we have something in place. You know what I did. This is not even an embarrassing story. Have I told this story before? You were out of town. You were out of town one weekend. The kids were much younger. I had not done my pelvic floor therapy yet. So that means anytime I jumped or ran, I peed a little. And so I wanted to be the most fun mom that weekend. So I took them to one of those trampoline parks. And I knew I would. Wanted to be a fun mom, so I wanted to jump with them. Like, pen would jump with them. So I put on. I bought depen. Or I don't even know if it was depend. I bought something. It was a diaper, but it was like, underwear. And I went to the bathroom at the trampoline park. I put it on, and I jumped with abandon. I had for like an hour. I had the best time. And every single time I jumped, it was like a little bit of.
Penn Holderness
But you didn't care.
Kim Holderness
But I didn't care. And then. So I. But I. It was full, guys. So I went to the bathroom.
Penn Holderness
Wow.
Kim Holderness
Afterwards, and I had to, like. I wrapped it up in a lot of paper towels and I put it in the trash can, and it hit the bottom of the trash can. Like, it was so full mother of the year. I'm not.
Penn Holderness
I'm not joking. Like, that's incredible dedication.
Kim Holderness
I literally. I, like, brought wipes. I, like, wipe myself off. I. But I was like, listen, this is what I need to do. And I did it, and I felt great about it. And then I went to pelvic floor therapy, and I no longer pee myself.
Penn Holderness
Oh, I know.
Kim Holderness
I mean, I still. A little bit. Just a little bit, but not as much. Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Ah, Okay. I give my top five lists like a B minus.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
It was like, I've had better lists.
Kim Holderness
You've had better lists. But I don't have a list, so.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. But I like to immediately criticize myself after these.
Kim Holderness
So I think, I think what we were only thing we're missing is like some definite, like a playlist of some really good songs.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Some really good processed food. I think Gen X really we taco.
Penn Holderness
Like a Taco Bell.
Kim Holderness
Like we, we hit prime like puberty hit when like the fast food industry really took off. So.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.

Laugh Lines with Kim & Penn Holderness
Episode: The Best Part About Getting Older
Release Date: March 18, 2025
In this engaging episode of Laugh Lines with Kim & Penn Holderness, hosts Kim and Penn delve deep into the multifaceted journey of aging. Embracing the theme of "aging better together," they share personal anecdotes, expert insights, and interactive segments that celebrate the positive aspects of growing older. With the help of their producer, Ann Marie Tapke, they also introduce a fun "March Madness" style bracket to determine the best parts of getting older.
The episode kicks off with a candid discussion about Penn's recent colonoscopy. Kim emphasizes the importance of regular health screenings, stating:
Kim Holderness (06:26): "You know, this is such an important test, and all of those cancer screenings are so important."
Penn shares his relief and the outcomes of his procedure, highlighting the significance of proactive health measures:
Penn Holderness (06:07): "So I know it sounds scary, but everything was negative. He said it didn't have cancer, but it was the type that they would call precancerous."
Transitioning from health to overall well-being, Kim and Penn discuss how life has generally gotten better with age, despite some inevitable physical changes. Penn reflects:
Penn Holderness (06:52): "I'm happier now than I was 10 years ago."
Kim adds her perspective on the newfound freedom that comes with age:
Kim Holderness (07:45): "I have a lot of life left to live, but at this point, I feel like I've earned the right to decide what type of work I wanna do, who I want to hang out with."
The hosts highlight the success of their "Years Old" song series, which resonates deeply with their listeners who are experiencing aging alongside them. Penn humorously describes the simplicity of the song's lyrics:
Penn Holderness (10:22): "It's the same song every single time. It doesn't rhyme. The only thing that rhymes is 'years old.'"
Ann Marie Tapke, their producer, shares her appreciation for the series:
Anne Marie Tapke (11:50): "They make it look so fun and so funny, and they really live it. So they really are everything you see on these videos."
To add an interactive twist, Ann Marie introduces a "March Madness" style bracket where Kim and Penn compete various aspects of aging to determine the best part about getting older.
Pillow Snob vs. Asking for Help Without Guilt
Kim Holderness (17:01): "If I were 20 and I brought two different pillows into a hotel, they would roll their eyes, but at my age, they don't dare."

In the concluding segments, the hosts reflect on the champion of their bracket—Not Caring What Others Think—and its liberating effect. Kim relates it to hormonal changes and the loss of concern over others' opinions:
Kim Holderness (46:19): "Your filter literally drops away. So I think that... my filter has disappeared, and I love it."
Penn concurs, celebrating the freedom that comes with letting go of societal pressures:
Penn Holderness (46:22): "It's liberating to have a designated driver, but I think you're right. I think you're right."
Throughout the episode, Kim and Penn share humorous and heartfelt stories, such as Kim's experience with pelvic floor therapy to enjoy active outings without worry. Their light-hearted banter and relatable experiences create an engaging and uplifting atmosphere.
Kim Holderness (56:09): "I took them to one of those trampoline parks. I put on a diaper underwear, jumped with abandon, and had the best time."
