Kim Holderness
Headspace.comHolderness I do know one thing for sure. I want to be stronger, I want to be smarter, and I want to be kinder. So basically, I want an entirely new personality. If it's possible.
Penn Holderness
Hang on, hang on.
Kim Holderness
Hi, everybody. I'm Kim Holderness.
Penn Holderness
And I'm Ben Holderness. And you're listening to the Holderness Family podcast.
Kim Holderness
Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Sally O'Malley. I'm proud to say I'm 50 years old. I'm not one of those gals who's afraid to hide her age, unlike some other gals. And I like to kick, stretch and kick.
Penn Holderness
I'm 50.
Kim Holderness
50 years old. Oh, Sally O'Malley.
Penn Holderness
They use that for the 50th anniversary.
Kim Holderness
Special, as they should.
Penn Holderness
But you and I have been big fans of this skit since we were 30.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. So I am going to be 50. Hopefully I will be able to turn 50. I'm going to be 50 in one year.
Penn Holderness
You're going to get there.
Kim Holderness
By the time you're listening to this, I will have turned 49. You were hitting me in the middle of my birthday week. We're taking a whole week to celebrate.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
I have to say I have to repeat my age these days because. Right. The middle numbers are a little confusing. Like I thought I was 47 for two years.
Penn Holderness
You mean like 40 is easy to remember? 45 probably easy to remember. But anything in between the two, that's. You just get lost in the wash.
Kim Holderness
I know I was 46 and I never got to tell anybody I was 46 because I just like went ahead to 47. Sure. I. This was my age. My own age was so confusing to me. So much so that Penn wrote a song. And I have to say in the comments, I was shocked how many people identified with this.
Penn Holderness
We're on a walk, it was a Friday. Said, what do you want for your birthday? She's like, I don't care. It's not a big deal. I'm just turning 48. And that's about the time that I am terrified. How do I tell her that she's 49? She can't remember old. She is. And this happens all the time.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
She always forgets her age.
Kim Holderness
What's her age again?
Penn Holderness
What's her age again?
Kim Holderness
You just. That was a bop holderness.
Penn Holderness
Thanks. I mean, thanks. Blink 182. Yes. So just a little bit of inside baseball. We're like, we should do a song about this. And usually it takes some time to think of the other of the song that fits.
Kim Holderness
Right.
Penn Holderness
The thing. The name of this song is what's my age again?
Kim Holderness
Oh, that's right.
Penn Holderness
So I didn't have to change much of anything except for the information. I will say just from the. Coming from the other side of this, first of all, you don't look a day after over. What do I say now? 32.
Kim Holderness
I don't care. Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Like, you look. You look fantastic. And you should wear your age like a badge. But it is interesting. Like I. I used to be kind of afraid to say, hey, and you're a year older than you actually think that you are. And now I've. It's not a. I can just tell you it's.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, it's not a problem. So we've kind of cleared that up. I have to say in the comments, Tasha versus the big C on Instagram, he. She writes, I'm still 35, but I was born in 1973.
Penn Holderness
That's right.
Kim Holderness
I. Right, yep.
Penn Holderness
You get a lot of that.
Kim Holderness
And we wrote another song this week that we put out about, like, how am I in charge of things? Because the conversation, obviously, in our house, we've been talking a lot about the aging process, but I don't feel old enough to be in charge of so many things. It's crazy.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. It just happens, right? Like, new responsibilities come at you and you take them on. And then I think if you can float 100ft above your house and look down and say, how the heck did we get into all of this? But, you know, you live long enough, you take on enough responsibilities, and at the same time, we don't know how old we are. We've forgotten all phone numbers of anybody.
Kim Holderness
So Michelle Cooks at home said, we lost two years with COVID So you're actually 47.
Penn Holderness
Oh, Covid years.
Kim Holderness
Which leads to what my son keeps on saying. He's like, oh, you're almost 29. Like, wink, wink. I can't. To the point for last time, I actually raised my voice a little because every time I'm like, dude, I do not want to be 29 again. Although that's when we got married. So I loved that we got married, but, like, that was such a stressful time in our lives. We were both like. My contract was always. I had a four year contract with Inside Edition, but every year on the renewal date, they could, without reason or advance, just, like, not renew me. So it was always in fear of losing my job. You were between jobs when you were 29?
Penn Holderness
I was 31. And it was one of the worst years of my life.
Kim Holderness
Right. So that was.
Penn Holderness
It was awful.
Kim Holderness
That was a really hard time.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
So I'm like, listen, I. I want the metabolism and I. Sure, I'll take that. My abs were amazing. But that part of my life, like, I don't want to do that. And I have to say, I do have a year before I turn 50. And for whatever reason, I felt really inspired to just, like, do something. Not a party. I'm very uncomfortable, like, the party part. But I wanted to find a way to celebrate being alive. And how I want to show up in the next 50 years, if that makes sense.
Penn Holderness
Well, yes, just to follow up so that. That means that you are wanting to live until you are 100 years old.
Kim Holderness
Oh, that's a good point. So that would be.
Penn Holderness
That would get you to 100. And there's some. There's some ish. That's gonna fall off a long way. Although you never know.
Kim Holderness
You never know. So I don't have an interest in living to 100 if I'm like, really sick or weak. But I mean, you know, I. You know how I feel about the zombies coming. Like, take me first. I don't want to fight, but I do. I want to be one of those cute old ladies, you know? Like, it. Part of it bothers me sometimes, but so cute. Like, they're doing Zumba and like a 20 year old will take a video and be like, oh, look how cute this old lady is. And like, have it go, Vi girl. Like, I would want to be that kind of old.
Penn Holderness
You want to be my Aunt Brent?
Kim Holderness
I do, yeah. She just turned 100.
Penn Holderness
I know.
Kim Holderness
And she is. Like, she's still playing bridge and in competitions. Like, I want to be her.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Like, she's what I want. She's still kicking it. She's still stunning. Yeah. That's where I want to be. And this is what this podcast is about today. Like, how I'm going to show up when I'm 50 in a year. And I want you guys, if you feel like joining me in the process, you can join real quick.
Penn Holderness
Just a note. We are now we have a financial planner. I recommend this to anyone, by the way.
Kim Holderness
Most people, I learned, have them.
Penn Holderness
Right. But if you don't, it's a great thing to do because they have this crazy calculator that they can. I don't work. It took. We're way behind on that, I think. But one of the most interesting things is, like, the first couple of days, they. They're like, okay, well, here's when we estimate Kim dying. And here's when we estimate Penn dying. And I'm like, why am I dying six years before you? And the answer is, statistically, dudes die earlier. Plus, I'm older. Equals, you got six years on your own.
Kim Holderness
Okay, listen, it is. We are not fast learners. And I have to say we've been doing this podcast for a long time. But I feel like I want to focus this podcast and like the good things that come with age, that was not one of the good things. Like seeing in Black and white how Morgan Stanley feels like we are going to die. So I was very uncomfortable with that.
Penn Holderness
I. I was okay with it.
Kim Holderness
I was very uncomfortable.
Penn Holderness
So that is. This is a calculator. It's a grand, wonderful calculator. You like the calculator part because you could get in there and say, ooh, if I save this much money, if I squirrel away this much money, then that finish line moves forward. So that part's nice. But then in order for the finish line to move forward, it means you have to have enough money for the rest of your life and they have to guess when we're gonna die anyway, which is okay. It's part of the process, right?
Kim Holderness
Yeah. Okay. But I have time. Okay. I'm dedicating. Listen up, guys. I'm dedicating my next year to this project.
Penn Holderness
Okay?
Kim Holderness
Okay.
Penn Holderness
Okay. So starting now.
Kim Holderness
Starting now.
Penn Holderness
This is new for me. You have a one year project.
Kim Holderness
I have a one year year of Kim project.
Penn Holderness
Moving into 50.
Kim Holderness
Moving into 50. How I want to show up on 50's front door. I had no idea really what I wanted to be. Like, what is it about learning 50 new skills or going to 50 new places? Like, how do I want to show up? So I do know one thing for sure. I want to be stronger, I want to be smarter, and I want to be kinder. So basically, I want an entirely new personality, if it's possible.
Penn Holderness
Hang on, let's not stop.
Kim Holderness
But, like, realistically, I'm still a moody introvert, but, like, I want to try to not be.
Penn Holderness
You're already making some inroads on this.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, you've got.
Penn Holderness
You're working out pretty hard. You are. You're definitely getting smarter. You wake up every morning and you journal and you have. You're being very intentional about learning about things, and you're generally a kind person. So I. I'm very curious to see how this is going to play out, because same.
Kim Holderness
Same.
Penn Holderness
I don't think you need to say but.
Kim Holderness
No, but stay tuned because I have. My plan for being kinder is going to involve me leaving the house. And, like, that is like, there's. There's like a roadblock. I always need help from my friends who. I went to Instagram to ask you if you had any ideas, and, man, did you come through. First of all, we got thousands of responses. So I'm going to group these. There's several different groups, and we're going to start with the ones that. This is a list of things that there is no way in hell I'm going to do.
Penn Holderness
So list one things you're not going to do.
Kim Holderness
Never.
Penn Holderness
Starting with things you're not going to do. I like it.
Kim Holderness
Ground rules. I would guess. We got several thousand responses. Half of them were telling me I should skydive. No, I'm not going to.
Penn Holderness
So they didn't. They didn't watch the Amazing Race, I guess.
Kim Holderness
Guys, you don't know me. I was on this television show called the Amazing Race, and I did a bungee jump. Should we, like, play the audio? Would playing the audio of this make sense?
Penn Holderness
Yeah. Let's go, baby. Kim, you're a rock star. Holy crap. You got it, honey. She is in a world of hurt right now, but she's going through it. Pause.
Kim Holderness
Pause.
Penn Holderness
It is the second highest bungee jump in Europe.
Kim Holderness
In the world.
Penn Holderness
In the. Sorry. In the world.
Kim Holderness
Give me the world, guys.
Penn Holderness
Sorry. It is very close to a giant concrete slab, which is a dam.
Kim Holderness
Right?
Penn Holderness
So. And then below her is not water. It is not. It's rocks. And Kim already doesn't like any of these things. And so you can see her face, and she's just looking down. And they had plenty of material to work with the people at the Amazing Race, but she's. She. She doesn't look scared. She looks blank.
Kim Holderness
I said we talked. Your cousin, who's a mental health counselor, said, I think you dissociated, and you're going to hear the next things I say. You're going to see. I was so scared, I couldn't form words. So listen to the next things I say.
Penn Holderness
You got it, baby. You got it.
Kim Holderness
Are you sure I'm. I'm sure you're. You're sure I'm. Did you hear that?
Penn Holderness
Yes. Play it again. Are you sure I'm Flap. Are you. Are you sure I'm flying? Or am I. Are you flying? Hang on. One more time.
Kim Holderness
Are you sure? I'm sure you're. You're sure I'm driving. We've played this clip before, so if you. If you've been on this. If you've listened to this podcast. But I was so scared. I get why people think you should do something daring, like maybe makes you feel alive to be so close to death. But, you guys, I don't like to be scared, and I did a really scary thing, and it was telephized so I never have to do this again.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. And as you're saying that the reason why you're having trouble is you're at the end of a plank. If you can imagine a pirate ship in the in. And they're asking you to assume a pose as if you're being crucified.
Kim Holderness
Right.
Penn Holderness
Like your arms are out and to the side and. Yeah, let's keep going. 3, 2, 1, go.
Kim Holderness
Oh, my God. She did it.
Penn Holderness
Come, you guys. You're such a badass, Kim. You're awesome. Okay, okay. Oh, and then Pen starts crying. That. Well, that was a lot for me, I think. I, I, I. So that was. I've learned through life to become more empathetic thanks to you and thanks to other people, but mostly thanks to you. And so I was at a point there where I was feeling very much what someone else was feeling throughout that entire process. And I knew that it was really hard for you, and I also knew that. So here's a bunch of things I knew. I knew you were terrified. I knew you'd be so mad at yourself if you didn't do it. And I also knew that you desperately did not want to do it. So you were stuck in this, like, no win situation. And as you and I both learned, you, like, anxiety still came and got you, like, a day later after this. And we dealt with that later.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
But at that moment, you were so brave and, and so steely eyed and you did it. That doesn't. That there's nothing out of that experience that makes you want to do it again.
Kim Holderness
I know.
Penn Holderness
Even though it was a great accomplishment.
Kim Holderness
No. And so many people, literally everybody else who did it, except for maybe Sherry on our season, was like, oh, my gosh, that was so thrilling. I just am not. I want to be that type of person that finds that thrilling. I just, I don't. I'm not doing it totally. So I appreciate life from my couch. I've done it. Check. I've been scared. Moving on.
Penn Holderness
Yes. And that's once again, round of applause to Kim. Every time I see it, I'm blown away. But it's something that you can appreciate watching other people do for the rest of your life, right?
Kim Holderness
100%. I can't wait to watch you guys skydive. More on this after these words. Honestly, meal planning has been tough for me. With spring in the air, I'm feeling motivated to reset my habits. But somehow take out always sneaks back in. This time, though, I've found something that's actually working for me.

Penn Holderness
No, I remember just this weekend carrying all the bulky jackets up to storage.
Kim Holderness
These things make all the difference, but some could argue the most satisfying is refreshing your bed.

See site for details okay, number two, we're gonna go to a voicemail. Julie called in and she had quote a year of me and she did all sorts of wonderful things like going to her yoga treat and made it a point to see all of her old friends and this. Okay, I would do that stuff, right? But I loved the end of her voice mail message and what I didn't do was promise that now that I've turned 50, I'm going to be healthier. Because that never works. And then you're always just disappointed. But anyway, that's what I did for my 50th birthday, which was a whole year of celebration. Okay, have a great day. Okay, so she had a year of me, but I loved that she promised not to. Like I'm promising to get in shape and be healthier. So I do have some specific goals about being stronger.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
But the. But I am not going to be like, I'm going to dramatically change my way of life. Okay. The next thing, I'm not going to do a marathon. Okay. If you guys didn't want me to skydive, the next thing you wanted me to do is run a marathon. I think my uterus would fall out.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
I.
Penn Holderness
We're just talking about the act of, of repetitive stress up and down of running. Is that what we're talking about?
Kim Holderness
I did a half Ironman in 2013. Even 12 years ago, I loved the training, I loved the people, the community. But my body was breaking down. Like some people were born to run. I am not of those people and I've accepted that.
Penn Holderness
Let me also say I was essentially born to run the first 40 years of my life.
Kim Holderness
You were so fast.
Penn Holderness
I was really fast. I won like intramural mile runs. I ran a sub 430 mile in high school. Like I. And I wasn't even on the track team. Like I was born to run, but when I hit 40, or maybe a little bit before, when I ran that triathlon with you, I started getting it band soreness and then my knees were the next to go. And running is the repetitive stress of running. If you're as tall as I am, it is over. Like I gotta find some other way to get exercise.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. And if you're a marathon runner, bless you. If you're a marathon runner who's aged, bless you. Your body was meant to do it. Can I say another reason why I don't want to run a marathon?
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
I read an article from a plastic surgeon that was like, that was like, the elasticity is going to like challenge gravity and elasticity. So I just like, I'm fine with the way I look.
Penn Holderness
Uh huh. You mean the elasticity of like your body? Face, skin, whatever.
Kim Holderness
But if I can be vain for a second, like I just don't want even more of a droopy face.
Penn Holderness
Okay. So is cycling, cycling? Is cycling better? You don't have a droopy face, but.
Kim Holderness
Like, no, I don't have a droopy face, but I want to like maintain not having.
Penn Holderness
So running makes you droopier?
Kim Holderness
No, I do. I, I read like one article.
Penn Holderness
Is that why you whispered it?
Kim Holderness
That's why I whispered. Because I'm. I feel shame about being so vain. Next, let's move on to things that have never been on my list. But I'm not entirely opposed to open to.
Penn Holderness
You're open to these things?
Kim Holderness
I'm open.
Penn Holderness
And again, these are people who sent in suggestions?
Kim Holderness
Sentence suggestions. Number one on this list. Get a tattoo. Not opposed to it, but I just don't know what it would be. And I always pictured my picture myself, like, looking like my. Both my grandmothers were gorgeous and stunning. But, like, to. Where would I. Where would I have seen a tattoo? Like, I just don't know where I would have put it.
Penn Holderness
You're not like a tribal upper butt tattoo.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
What about. What about, like, I see a lot of these, A lot of, like, cursive inside the wrist on the forearm, like, que sera, sera, or like some sort of saying.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, you know, I could be into that. Like a reminder. Like, don't be.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
Stupid you.
Penn Holderness
Yes. Like, you better love this saying.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, right.
Penn Holderness
That's kind of part of it. You need to love that saying. So you're thinking forearm now I've got one on my ring finger. Yes, that was. And I'll tell you, I was expecting it to be extraordinarily painful the way that it was described to me. And maybe I'm just a badass, but it didn't hurt that much. Also, it was tiny. Sorry.
Kim Holderness
It's not like you're getting a sleeve. You're very sweet, though. Okay, the next one. We're gonna get a voicemail for this one. Hey, Kim. The best thing I did when I turned 50 or right before I made a vow to really get serious about yoga. I'm 65. I've been doing it hardcore every other day for 15 years. I do power yoga, planks, push ups, and it was the best gift I ever gave myself. My yoga teacher is one of the greatest blessings of my life, and it saved me from slipping on the ice twice. My balance, my flexibility, my joint pains are gone. I feel great about myself. Such a transformation in not only my body, but my mind.
Penn Holderness
It's so funny the way that I listen to things. When she talked about not slipping on the ice, I was. I tried to imagine what that looked like, and it was like a Scarlett Johansson, Avengers, like, superhero landing on the ice with, like, her fist in the ground. You know what I'm talking about. When they land from a long way away and just looking like a badass.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
So interesting thought that yoga can add strength. I. I'm sure it does, but I don't know that everybody, you know, equates it with that. I guess there's a type of yoga you can do more of like a power yoga, so that could help you with your strength.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, I'm not opposed to it. I think I Want to be the type of person that does yoga. And so I'm not opposed to it. It's not going to be, like, right away on my to do list, but I love, like, her voice even sounded, like, happy and strong. So if I can get some of that, I'll do that. That next something you guys recommended to me, several of you. Mdma, guided therapy.
Penn Holderness
Okay, let's explain what that is real quick.
Kim Holderness
I don't even know if I'm going to be the best at explaining this, but there's different. You. There's a, like, a Hayahuasa thing. Mdma. What is that, like, drug?
Penn Holderness
It's called Molly or Ecstasy. Like, that's the street name of it. But this is. You said guided therapy. So that's going to be a licensed physician or someone who's giving you small doses of it. It and safely taking you through it. Because it is shown that a lot of these drugs, psilocybin, like, a lot of things open up new neural pathways.
Kim Holderness
Right. And I know that there's research that has been used to treat PTSD and soldiers home for more stuff like that, but I just read Amy Griffin's book, the Tell, and she uncovered some incredible trauma that she had been really suppressing, and it was impacting her life in ways. And she tells a really beautiful story about how she's processed this. This. I'm not opposed. I just don't know if I'm strong enough. If I uncover. I. First of all, I don't think I'm going to uncover a great trauma, but I'm not opposed to it.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
But I just don't know if I need it. Like, I don't know if I want to uncover even something small. Does that make sense?
Penn Holderness
I'd kind of like to talk about that a little bit more.
Kim Holderness
Okay.
Penn Holderness
Like, why don't you want to uncover something, Pen?
Kim Holderness
I don't like to feel my feelings. So you. I'm working on this.
Penn Holderness
Don't. But in the past year, would you say that you feel better because you have uncovered some things?
Kim Holderness
Yes. I've been going to therapy, and the biggest takeaway is, like, Kim, you need to feel this. If you don't feel it, it's just going to get bottled down and it'll come out a different way. So, um, even. It's so funny. If my therapist was to listen to this podcast, she'd be like, obviously, you're feeling some anxiety about aging, and you're dealing this with this by making it a list. And so instead of making a list why don't you just process this? I'm going to try to do both. Because I need stuff like this to process my uneasiness or just, like, uncertainty about what's ahead.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Well, so here I'm going to tell you this, right. I am hearing you say this, and I have a fear that if you do this, like, you're gonna go on MDM and you're gonna be like, oh, my God, I hate my husband. No, but I'm telling you, like, I have that fear. There's nothing you can do to say that's not true. I've got that fear. And I still think you should do it. Because if you do, if that's how you feel, that's how you really feel. Is there. You know, we should. I know Amy. I went to college. We should get her on and ask. I mean, I don't know, like, how's she feeling right now? She's got to be feeling better.
Kim Holderness
Well, the. The book is beautiful. It's called the Tell. We'll link it to the show notes. Maybe we do need to talk to Amy. Yeah, I mean, I think she would be a great person to talk to about this.
Penn Holderness
This is open to, though. This is not a definite at this point.
Kim Holderness
Open to?
Penn Holderness
Open to.
Kim Holderness
I'm open to, but not definite. I have to say, the one thing I know for sure in my life, to the core of my being, is that you were the only person that I want to, like, hang out with.
Penn Holderness
So I think if we, like, got crazy and took some Molly, you'd still feel that way.
Kim Holderness
Oh, my gosh. Yeah. I'd want to make out all the time. Okay. The next one, real quick is, like, I'm open to, but it wasn't, like, ever in my front of my mind. It's visit all 50 states. A lot of people wanted me to do that.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
Totally not opposed to it. I just feel like, logistically, it's not an out thing. Like, that's an empty nest thing maybe.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. So this year, that's going to be tough.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. We. We have a kid graduating from high school, going to college.
Penn Holderness
I used to be a little averse to this. Now I have a friend in Fargo and I'm like, oh, yeah, I could pull that off.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Some of the other. Like, there's. You know what? We'll probably end up liking the states that we look at now as and think, like, oh, why do I want to go there? Well, it probably.
Kim Holderness
I think there's value in beautiful parts in every state. Okay. Okay. Just Real quick, the weirdest suggestions. We're moving on.
Penn Holderness
Oh, good. Okay. So quickly. Weirdest suggestions. Are these a yes, no, maybe, or where are we with these?
Kim Holderness
I would just call these weird. Okay. Or it. You know what? Not weird. I don't want to label. I'm going to call these non traditional ideas of how to celebrate my last year in my 40s going to 50. One person just wrote cheese. Cheese.
Penn Holderness
They just wrote cheese.
Kim Holderness
Yeah. So non traditional. Just. I don't know what that means. But cheese.
Penn Holderness
I mean, I love cheese.
Kim Holderness
Love cheese. I get a little bloaty and farty.
Penn Holderness
I get super bloated and farty.
Kim Holderness
But I. That's not gonna stop me. Next one Joe K. Kelly wrote, get an endoscopy and colonoscopy at the same time. I did it. Best day ever.
Penn Holderness
Okay. Kim.
Kim Holderness
Yes.
Penn Holderness
What is an endoscopy? You probably know more than I do.
Kim Holderness
I think it is where you know the colonoscopy. They put the camera up your butt.
Penn Holderness
Yep.
Kim Holderness
I think they put the camera. Hopefully not the same one down your. Your throat. I think.
Penn Holderness
Do they meet?
Kim Holderness
I think. No.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
No. Like I don't think it's the same in the same day, but not the same time.
Penn Holderness
So best day ever for him. Has to be a reference to the nap. Drugs and the nap.
Kim Holderness
Guys. The nap is. So I'm getting a colonoscopy in April and I have the day circled a few times because the day. The day before, it's a spa day. Not amazing. Day of. Yeah, super fun. Okay. And the last tuxedo bandit 25 said I should eat 50 hard boiled eggs in 50 minutes. Obviously this person doesn't like me.
Penn Holderness
Well, no, this person watched Cool Hand Luke.
Kim Holderness
Oh, is that what happened?
Penn Holderness
This was a bet in prison that Paul Newman had to eat 50 eggs.
Kim Holderness
Did he do it?
Penn Holderness
Well, I mean, he did in the movie.
Kim Holderness
Oh, it's a fiction. Yeah, it's fiction. Okay.
Penn Holderness
But it was. There's this famous line where he goes, I can eat 50 eggs. That's got to be what he's referring to.
Kim Holderness
Okay, moving on to the last part of your suggestions. Things that I actually would want to do. 50 different hikes. I love that.
Penn Holderness
Yep. This is in the next year.
Kim Holderness
Yes.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
This 50 acts of kindness. I love the idea of waking up every day and thinking about how I'm going to help someone. So this I am going to work into my 50 plan and we're going to get more to that. But I think it's going to be really challenging because that Means I'd have to leave the house. And I love this suggestion of a 50 before 50. Hey, my name's Monica and like you, I wanted to do some cool stuff before I turned 50. So when I turned 45, I created a 50 before 50 list just to give you some ideas. I did like new foods I wanted to try, places I wanted to go, lame things like do a 1000 piece puzzle. I've never done that. Things for personal growth, things for exercise. So good luck with this. I can't wait to follow along and hear about the 50amazing things you decide to do. That was really sweet. And she's so organized. Monica, you're so organized that you started when you were 45, right?
Penn Holderness
You've got one year. So that would be every. Well, it'd be every seven days, every week. You'd have to do something if that was the route that you wanted to take.
Kim Holderness
Not the route I'm going to take. Okay, ready? Okay. We don't even need a drum roll. But I think we should mark this part of the podcast. Here's what I am going to do.
Penn Holderness
How many things are we thinking?
Kim Holderness
5.
Penn Holderness
You're going to do 5? With like we've gotten a bunch of input. It you've got five.
Kim Holderness
I have five big goals.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
That before. And the reason we're doing a flipping podcast on this is because I want you guys to either join me, I'm going to do some blogs, some check ins on this, going to write about it on Substack, but I need you to be my accountabili buddies. I love to start things and I mostly finish things, but I could see me running into resistance on some of these and then just quietly quitting. I want to be sitting in this chair a year from now reporting that you honestly that I've mostly accomplished these things.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
Okay. Ready?
Penn Holderness
Yes.
Kim Holderness
I'm not going to do the thing where I'm going to promise to be a new person, like, oh, I'm going to get super duper healthy and. Because that just doesn't work for me. But here. What, here's what I'm going to do. Health wise, I want to do a pull up and low and lower my cardiovascular age.
Penn Holderness
Okay, so those are, that's one thing, but it's two things.
Kim Holderness
Right? Okay.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
So my aura ring, which is like this ring I wear and it tracks my sleep and my steps, my activity and it gives all sorts of data that I'm not really sure what it means, but it says that my cardiovascular age is a year older. Than I actually am. It thinks I'm already 50.
Penn Holderness
How does it. Is it just because of your recovery time?
Kim Holderness
And I don't know.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
And so I, I know that last year it said it was two years younger. And so in the last year I've aged three years.
Penn Holderness
Maybe it's just a bad day.
Kim Holderness
No.
Penn Holderness
Or does it take a total sample of.
Kim Holderness
Okay, yeah. So I'm not gonna pretend that I'm instantly gonna become a new person, but I just want to be. I just want to take all those tests, like those big body scans and get those blood work. Like, I want to find out what's happening cardiovascularly because the women in my family, traditionally, this is how they, they leave the planet. And I just want to do a pull up. So I think that.
Penn Holderness
Okay, so that's. But that's two things.
Kim Holderness
That's two things. But I'm calling. This is like my health goal.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
My health.
Penn Holderness
And your two specific things inside of your goals is to do a pull up, which I can help you with and lower your cardiovascular age.
Kim Holderness
Yes.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
Okay. Number two of my five big goals before 50. I do want to do 50 acts of kindness. Now, I don't need them to be random. I mean, personally, I would just document them for myself because ideally you're kind every single day. But I need to. This is what I need to workshop. Like, I like to. I like rules and I like to check things off. And I love the idea of waking up every day thinking, how am I going to help somebody? But I don't know what that is. Like, what is. What does an act of kindness actually mean?
Penn Holderness
Yeah, like, how kind do you have to be? So, like, you go grocery shopping and they ask if you'd like to round up for charity.
Kim Holderness
Right?
Penn Holderness
Like, because you could do that all day long every week and check. But do you think, are you thinking 50 different types.
Kim Holderness
Different types. So volunteering different places. Awesome. Easy. Like, and I just need structure. And I do feel weird about announcing, like, how I'm going to do nice things for people, but again, this is like, to hold me accountable. This is totally something that I would say and then not follow through with. I don't know, I just, I want to have a direct impact. So I'm thinking I, I do nice things for my kids every day, but I'm not counting my kids. So, I mean, I, I've already started thinking of this and I'm already scanning the parking lot of the grocery stores, like, looking for the little lady that needs help with her groceries. Like, I'M already looking, but I would love you guys to slide into my DMs and just give me some ideas. I mean, I went on the Internet and they have, like, random acts of kindness, but I just need more. Like, what does that look like? Okay, what do we think of that? I mean, I'm gonna have to leave the house for that.
Penn Holderness
I love everything so far. It. This is a large list.
Kim Holderness
It is. It is lofty.
Penn Holderness
I love. But I love the aspirations. Let's keep going. Let's talk about once we get to the end.
Kim Holderness
Okay? Okay.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
Read 50 books. But I'm cheating. Okay. I've already read nine or 10 books.
Penn Holderness
This year, so read 40 books from.
Kim Holderness
Now, but I'm going to call it 50.
Penn Holderness
Okay.
Kim Holderness
But 40. Yeah. I'm. I'm giving myself a head start because I. Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Do you think that you can finish a book every nine days? Because that's what that's going to be to read 40?
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
You think you got it?
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
And you get five days off because it's 365.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
You have five days of wiggle room.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
Like, would a smaller book, like our new ADHD children's book, would that count?
Kim Holderness
I'm so excited for that book. Yes. I'm gonna count it.
Penn Holderness
You're gonna count that?
Kim Holderness
Actually, I should put in my list of, like, already read. Already read it. I'll share in the blog post that accompanies us. The 10 books that I've already read this year.
Penn Holderness
This is amazing. If you do this, I'm gonna give you a huge high five, because I just finished a book that took me over a month to read. And I know people think that I have, like, a disability when I say this, but it was 745. 5,000 pages long.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
I don't want it so long.
Kim Holderness
So you bring up a good point. Because what if the book I pick up is 745 pages and you love it? And I love it. Yeah. So this is where I'm going to, like, asterisk this with, like. I'm going to give myself a great, like, grace. This is a good target.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
I'm going to keep a list and keep adding to the list. Okay. This one. I'm not filing this under a health goal. I am filing this under mental health. I want to walk 18, 25 miles this year.
Penn Holderness
What's. That's an interesting number.
Kim Holderness
It's 10,000 steps a day. An average of 10,000 steps. So it's not. I don't have five miles.
Penn Holderness
Okay, five miles. So five miles a day.
Kim Holderness
So on an average, so on a set. So last Saturday, I've been trying to think, like, can I actually do this? I've been trying to practice. So last Saturday, between the walk run I did and just being around, like cleaning up the house and stuff like that, I walked like 12 miles. And then yesterday we had a busy day and I didn't walk 12 miles. That's a lie. I walked seven miles. And then yesterday I only walked like 8,000 steps because we had a busy day with a lot of meetings. So I. It is good for my mental health. So I'm going to track total miles every year. What do you think again?
Penn Holderness
Very. All of these are great.
Kim Holderness
Okay.
Penn Holderness
I would say that, like doing one of these things. Of these.
Kim Holderness
I know you guys would be good.
Penn Holderness
But you're doing five of these.
Kim Holderness
Okay. And this one, the last one, I think I've already put into practice in 2025. This was sort of a super secret resolution, was to say yes when I get invited to go someplace because my introvert heart wants to stay on the couch. So I've been invited to travel. I've been invited to, you know, dinner parties. I've been invited places that sometimes I would just say, oh, my gosh, thank you so much, and not go. I've been going.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, you really have.
Kim Holderness
And it's been great. So I'm going to continue that.
Penn Holderness
Awesome.
Kim Holderness
So I want to describe Penn's face right now. So he is the person who knows me better than I know myself. And he is smiling and he's holding back a lot. He's stifling a laugh. He's nodding in a way because he, he, he cannot. He knows in our marriage, he can't actually. And he would never say, can him. You're taking crazy pills. But he is going to now. I give you permission now to throw out a caution flag. What? Where's your caution flag?
Penn Holderness
Okay. Well, so. I love you.
Kim Holderness
I love you too.
Penn Holderness
I do. I love you.
Kim Holderness
I love you so much.
Penn Holderness
I know that you could do all of this.
Kim Holderness
Yes.
Penn Holderness
You could do every single one of these things.
Kim Holderness
Yes.
Penn Holderness
But that would not just be something that you've done in between 49 and 50. It would be most of what you're doing.
Kim Holderness
It would be a part time job.
Penn Holderness
Between now and 50. This is an aggressive. So I. I'm so sorry, but I was tack. I was. I know how. I know exactly how much time it's going to take every day.
Kim Holderness
Okay.
Penn Holderness
For you to do this.
Kim Holderness
How long?
Penn Holderness
So let's if you don't mind, I'll go through.
Kim Holderness
He's going to get into it.
Penn Holderness
Each one of these and I love you, so. I love you.
Kim Holderness
Say it again. Do you love me?
Penn Holderness
Yeah, I love you. Pull ups. That's like five minutes a day and you got it.
Kim Holderness
Got it.
Penn Holderness
You got like. I'm not worried about that. So it's five minutes, but probably five minutes every day. Right. The. The cardiovascular age. I think that's going to, that's going to solve itself with the walking. With the walking and the fact that you just don't, like, you just don't drink anymore.
Kim Holderness
Yeah, like that's. I've kind of stopped drinking.
Penn Holderness
Yeah. I don't think you need a body scan. Oh, I.
Kim Holderness
Guys, I want to get a body scan.
Penn Holderness
So that's another day.
Kim Holderness
So. No. Okay. But you know, they're not, they don't have them in our town, but I see them all over social media. Like so it's two days.
Penn Holderness
You have to travel to a place.
Kim Holderness
Okay, but I'll do push ups on. I'll do push ups.
Penn Holderness
I'm not worried about that. I'm just tacking up the amount of.
Kim Holderness
Time and I'll read. Okay.
Penn Holderness
Right. So you've got, you got a trip and you got five minutes and then the 50 acts of kindness again. Wonderful. I love that. You. I think for you that's going to be more of a mental space thing because you're going to be trying to think of what it is that you can do. You're going to be always thinking of this. This. I.
Kim Holderness
You're thinking the mental load of that will be too heavy.
Penn Holderness
Honey, I. Well, I also think you already do this. I think you probably do 50 acts of kindness every year. I think you do something nice for someone every single week. You just don't tally it. My concern is that you do it without even thinking. And now you're gonna have like a check that you're gonna do for it and you're gonna be looking for it. And I just think that you're naturally already providing 50 acts of kindness.
Kim Holderness
Yeah.
Penn Holderness
The, the 50 books. Okay, so that's, let's see, you read a 3300 page book. You do you read it about a page a minute or do you read faster than that?
Kim Holderness
I think a page a minute.
Penn Holderness
Okay, great. So that now we're looking at probably 45 minutes to an hour of reading every day.
Kim Holderness
I'm kind of doing that.
Penn Holderness
Okay. The walk is about, that's about an hour a day. If you want to do that and then saying yes and going when invited. That could be. You get invited to a lot of stuff. You're a lot of fun. So that be 25 weekends or trips that you're gonna take.
Kim Holderness
But I could read and do pull ups and do nice things for people while I'm there.
Penn Holderness
Amazing. But you're gone half the time as this happens. And I like, we started this year with me saying you need to go on more trips.
Kim Holderness
Yes.
Penn Holderness
And you have done that.
Kim Holderness
I know Pen's like, where are you going now?
Penn Holderness
I have not gone anywhere.
Kim Holderness
He hasn't been on an airplane. And I've been like, had my passport stamp.
Penn Holderness
You've been quite a few times. And so I do want to have some time to do some things for myself, but I also want to support this so much. I just want you to understand what you're. What you're putting in here is about two and a half to three hours a day of commitment to do these things, which some of them can be on your free time, plus probably 15 to 20 additional trips.
Kim Holderness
No, I mean, I won't. I listen, logistics, family. Like I was invited to something in May. I mean, Lo's graduating. I'm not going to be the person that's like, oh, I have to go because you invited me. So I just want to be more. That's a little more generic. You know what I'm hearing, Pen, is that you are very. You're softly cautioning me.
Penn Holderness
I'm not even cautioning you. I'm just, I'm giving you the numbers.
Kim Holderness
The numbers. I am just going to be doing some self reporting. I'm going to try my best and if I show up at 50, having almost gotten to every goal, I'll be happy. So. But this is just, I think honestly two hours a day focusing on myself. Is it an hour before work and an hour in the evening? Yes. Like I need to do that anyway. And listen, we're in the stage of life where we can do that. Our kids are older. I don't have to wipe their butts anymore. My daughter's leaving for college. I mean, mean, we are in a really glorious time of parenting where we're not having to. We don't have to parent that much sometimes.
Penn Holderness
That's true.
Kim Holderness
Like our son stay at School till 7 o'clock because of practices and stuff. Okay, so that's it. Those are my five big things before turning 50. I love the phone calls. I lift, listen to every single voicemail. I'm a. I apologize if we didn't get to yours. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for being supportive of this. I am going to do, do some updates. I'm gonna do an update. Maybe it's like a weekly, just sort of like how I got to my, how I'm doing and yeah. So look for that. And if you guys want to join me on like the pull up part or the walking part, we can kind of create a little community there.
Penn Holderness
I'm so excited for you.
Kim Holderness
We usually do a top five list at the end, but I feel like this podcast has been a lot of lists.
Penn Holderness
Yeah, no, this is your top. This was Kim's top five.
Kim Holderness
That was my top five.
Penn Holderness
You did the top five five this week and it was extensive and wonderful and, and, and you're going to look, you're going to come out of this year feeling like a badass.
Kim Holderness
I hope so.
Penn Holderness
Yeah.
Kim Holderness
