Okay, so point number one is to see yourself as a first responder. Now, I think most of us are familiar with what a paramedic does, right? So when there's for instance, a car crash, a paramedic might be one of the very first people on scene to help with the immediate distress, to help stabilize, and then they shuttle that person off, quite literally, often to specialized care where they might need surgery from a surgeon that has again, specialized education to deal with whatever the emergency is. And so, like a paramedic, I invite you to see yourself as this first responder. You likely will be the first stop for many people who have just had a discovery or disclosure in their marriage. And so for you, first of all, in order to do your best work, you need to get a little bit of education. Now, I want to back up and say, I know you've got your work cut out for you and I'm so grateful for your service. You didn't ask for this. You weren't specially trained to deal with a lot of the issues that are coming to you. But I encourage you to get some education specifically around this issue because I know how prevalent it is. And you just start with the nine best practices. If you're like, I don't even know where to start again, it's succinct, easy to digest. So get some education about the impact pornography on marriages and families. Start there and then be prepared to direct those individuals to to specialized support. So you'll. Your role as a faith leader, as a bishop, is to provide that spiritual guidance. And then you're going to shuttle them off to someone with more specialized education so that they can get the care that they need. And I often like to say you are an important part of the care team, but you are not the team. So all of the healing that's going to need to take place is not going to take place just there in your office. But you will also do your best work when you can direct them to Christ and point them to the hope and the healing that's available through Jesus Christ. So seeing yourself as that first responder and helping them get a clear understanding of who they are as a son or daughter of God, pointing them to God as their primary source of relief, and then make sure you're directing them to specialized support. Okay, so this next point is closely tied to the first point, which is to let go of responsibility of fixing the problem. And I hope that actually this helps you just breathe a sigh of relief.

Podcast: Leading Saints
Episode: The Church Leader’s Role When Someone Struggles with Pornography
Date: June 23, 2026
Guest: Tara McCausland
Host: Kurt Frankham
Theme: Become a Leader, Not a Calling
In this special clip from the upcoming Liberating Saints Virtual Summit, host Kurt Frankham introduces a powerful and practical segment from a session with Tara McCausland. Tara addresses the unique challenges church leaders face when ministering to individuals struggling with pornography, focusing on how leaders can adopt the mindset of a "first responder" and avoid the pressure of having to "fix" everything themselves.
(01:08 – 03:50)
Analogy to Paramedics: Tara encourages leaders to see themselves not as the sole solution to the problem, but as “first responders” much like paramedics at an accident scene.
"Like a paramedic, I invite you to see yourself as this first responder. You likely will be the first stop for many people..."
— Tara McCausland (01:27)
Importance of Basic Education:
Leaders aren’t expected to be experts on every issue, but can greatly benefit from seeking education specifically about how pornography impacts individuals, marriages, and families.
“I encourage you to get some education specifically around this issue because I know how prevalent it is.”
— Tara McCausland (02:05)
The Role of Specialized Support:
Faith leaders should be points of spiritual support and guidance, but healing often requires the involvement of professionals with specialized training.
“You are an important part of the care team, but you are not the team.”
— Tara McCausland (03:17)
(03:18 – 03:48)
Pointing to Divine Relief:
Emphasizes that the ultimate healing comes from Christ, and leaders should prioritize helping individuals see themselves as children of God and guide them toward spiritual sources of hope and relief.
“You will also do your best work when you can direct them to Christ and point them to the hope and the healing that’s available through Jesus Christ.”
— Tara McCausland (03:29)
Referring Out:
Core healing and support doesn’t end in the leader's office. Direct those struggling to connect with specialized support hotlines, therapists, or resources.
(03:49 – 04:16)
“Let go of responsibility of fixing the problem. And I hope that actually this helps you just breathe a sigh of relief.”
— Tara McCausland (04:06)
