Kristin Cavallari
This is let's Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari, a podcast all about getting real and open on everything from sex, relationships, reality tv, wellness, family, and so much more. And just a fair warning, there will probably be some oversharing. Welcome in. So let's be honest. I have a great episode for you today. This is a rerun, but it is one of my favorites. This episode is with Bobby Flay, who everybody knows and loves, and for good reason. He has become a near and dear friend of mine, and we just had a great time taping this episode. So I am currently busy on the road, and I hope you enjoy this episode. If you have not heard it before and if you have, enjoy it again, because it's a good one. Bobby Flay. Welcome to let's Be Honest. How are you?
Bobby Flay
I'm so glad to be here. You know, I love being in your company.
Kristin Cavallari
Oh, you're sweet.
Bobby Flay
No, I do. I really.
Kristin Cavallari
It's very nice.
Bobby Flay
I really do. We had dinner in Nashville a few months ago, and I had the best, most fun time.
Kristin Cavallari
It was fun. I Actually, we're gonna get to that because you said some of the funniest dating stories that I've ever heard that night. And I was gonna say having a couple drinks with you at dinner is very fun. I mean, I was laughing my ass off. Well, I mean, you're not liquored up today, so we'll see what we can get out of it.
Bobby Flay
I am not liquored up today, but I. You know what? Do you have any tequila?
Kristin Cavallari
I can get you something.
Bobby Flay
Yeah, I knew I was gonna like the.
Kristin Cavallari
The.
Bobby Flay
The dinner that as soon as you sat down, you were like, yeah, what kind of tequila do you guys have?
Kristin Cavallari
I was like, okay, game over from there. I don't know, though. I'm kind of turning on tequila.
Bobby Flay
You are?
Kristin Cavallari
I know. I don't know what's going on. I think, honestly, I'm turning on alcohol in general. I'm just, like, going through a phase, you know?
Bobby Flay
I don't blame you. I mean, it's one of the things that you notice right away when you stop drinking a little bit. Like, things are just clearer.
Kristin Cavallari
You feel so much. I sleep so much better, too.
Bobby Flay
The sleep is really the key.
Kristin Cavallari
That's huge, because I sleep like shit if I even have one drink right. Okay. But I want to. Let's go back because it's pub day for you. You have a new book. Congratulations. Book 18.
Bobby Flay
This is my 18th book. It's called Bobby Flay Chapter One.
Kristin Cavallari
I mean, that's insane. 18 books. So this is a. It's a cookbook, but it's also a coffee table book.
Bobby Flay
I mean, it's definitely a coffee table book. This is the. I would say, the most. This is the nicest book I've done, you know, so it, like, you know, the thing that I really was. One of the things I was really happy about was, like, when I took the first book out, when they sent it to me from the publisher, I was like, is it heavy enough? Like, I want it to have that heft to it.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
And there's. I don't have any books like this. And, you know, it's a hundred recipes from my career that I chose, and I updated them for today, and every single recipe has a full page, color, picture.
Kristin Cavallari
So it's, like, amazing.
Bobby Flay
It's definitely. It's a gift. It's a coffee table book. It's definitely a collector's item, and it is beautiful.
Kristin Cavallari
What made you want to do this instead of just a traditional cookbook?
Bobby Flay
I've always wanted. Listen, I'm a chef by trade, and, you know, if you're a chef, if you're somebody who loves to cook, like me and you, you have an opportunity to write books like this. You always want that thing that is like the big book, you know, it's sort of like the resume of your career. And so, you know, I just feel like I'm just getting started in my career, even though I've been doing it for a long time, and I have lots of other things to do, and I'm doing them now, but I didn't want to leave what I've done behind quite yet. And so I brought this book to life.
Kristin Cavallari
Amazing.
Bobby Flay
But thank you for asking.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. And it's. I mean, you have it. I think it's worth holding up and showing.
Bobby Flay
I want to quote. Where's the camera? Oh, hi. Oh, there you go.
Kristin Cavallari
It is beautiful.
Bobby Flay
I do want to tell you something. This is the very first book that I've signed.
Kristin Cavallari
I'm honored.
Bobby Flay
It's got your name in it right here.
Kristin Cavallari
Look at that. What did you say?
Bobby Flay
I just said.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay.
Bobby Flay
Yeah, I kept it simple.
Kristin Cavallari
Classic.
Bobby Flay
Yes, exactly.
Kristin Cavallari
Classic guy. But how do you have time to do everything? Because you are busy. This is your 18th book.
Bobby Flay
18Th book.
Kristin Cavallari
You have multiple TV shows. You're a dad. You're constantly cranking out content for social media. I mean, you. You're opening multiple restaurants still. How do you. Or I guess the better question is, what motivates you to Keep doing it all. What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Bobby Flay
I think it's, you know, I, I dropped outta high school when I was in like 16 or 17 years old, 10th grade. I was done. And I won't bore you with all the details. That's another podcast.
Kristin Cavallari
I don't know, I feel like that is a pretty good story.
Bobby Flay
I know. Well, I mean, it's just a long story, but you know, basically I could not really learn in school in a traditional way. And I was going to when I was in high school. They weren't testing kids for every single thing possible, but I definitely had some sort of or do have some learning disorder of some sort or disability. And so I, I did not want to open an English textbook. Ironically, I have 18 cookbooks, but, but I didn't want to open an English textbook and learn. That was, that was not the way I was going to do it. So I did no work. It wasn't that I was a bad student. I was not a student. I did nothing. And you know, I was hanging out with my friends, I was playing sports, I was a good athlete, but that was all I was interested in. And then when I finally quit high school, I went to work in a restaurant just because I needed a job. And I was like, I was loving it because I was, for the first time I was learning something and I was doing it by using my hands.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
And I needed vocational education, which we don't have enough of in this country.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
And I'm not gonna get in a soap up soapbox about that. But I really believe that not every kid learns the same way.
Kristin Cavallari
I completely agree.
Bobby Flay
Me included. Yeah.
Kristin Cavallari
I mean, having three kids, I see that. Just with my own kids, you know, it's very apparent they're different. Yeah. Very different. Different. Yeah.
Bobby Flay
So. So getting back to your question, I, I do it because I love to cook so much. It's the way that I show my adoration to my friends and my family. I cook for them. And I cook all the time. I cook in some way, shape or form almost every single day.
Kristin Cavallari
Wow.
Bobby Flay
Almost every single day.
Kristin Cavallari
Do you ever get in a, in a slump though, where you're just like, ah, you're uninspired, you don't have to make. I mean, that happens to me all the time.
Bobby Flay
It's like, it's like writer's block, you know, it's the same thing. It's like, I don't want to make the same thing over again and like, But I need inspiration. And so I travel for Inspiration.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay. Yeah.
Bobby Flay
And it could be local travel. It could be like, I'm going to go to a restaurant in LA tonight and go check out what they're doing, because I'm going to learn something.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
Or it can be like, I'm going to go to Italy today and spend a week there and just eat and see what's going on.
Kristin Cavallari
That's amazing.
Bobby Flay
I mean, so it can be any. Anything along those lines. I always get inspired no matter where I am when it comes to cooking.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay. Yeah. I love that. And then out of all of the job titles that you do have, so TV personality, chef, obviously, author. What is your favor?
Bobby Flay
Cooking.
Kristin Cavallari
So just chef?
Bobby Flay
Yeah, Being a chef.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
In my restaurants, to me, that's the. Like, when I put my apron on, it's my. It's my sort of protector from the world, you know, it's my shield.
Kristin Cavallari
Yep.
Bobby Flay
And it's the place that I love to be. I love to inspire people that work with. With me or alongside of me. And also, it's just. It's just my happiest place. It's like my days go really quick when I'm in my chef whites and I'm cooking.
Kristin Cavallari
I love that. Okay, I want to shift gears for a minute.
Bobby Flay
Okay. Shocking.
Kristin Cavallari
You ready?
Bobby Flay
Yeah.
Kristin Cavallari
That's all fine and great, Bobby, but I'm just kidding. Ok. So you've been married three times.
Bobby Flay
Oh, my God.
Kristin Cavallari
You know, let's be honest.
Bobby Flay
I know. Wait, have I. Yes, I have. Right.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay. So is marriage off the table completely, or would you do it again? I'm just gonna really go in here. Okay. Do you want that drink now?
Bobby Flay
No, no, I'm okay. I'm, like, starting to sweat a little bit.
Kristin Cavallari
It's hot in here.
Bobby Flay
It's all right. I knew it. Listen, when I called you and said, can I please be on your podcast, I knew what I was getting myself. Big day. I knew who you are. Is it off the table? If you asked me today, I would. I'd say probably yes.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay.
Bobby Flay
Because I don't know. You know, for me, it hasn't been the best situation, obviously. That said, I don't feel like I need to do it again.
Kristin Cavallari
Right.
Bobby Flay
I have an amazing daughter who's 28 years old. I'm not having any more kids as far as I know. And I. And I just. And I just think, like, I would be interested in a life partner for sure.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
But I don't think it necessarily needs the documentation.
Kristin Cavallari
I get that. Even doing it one time, I'm sort of like, what's the point.
Bobby Flay
How do you feel?
Kristin Cavallari
I mean, similar to you. I'm in no rush. I feel like I would maybe get married again, but it's not something that I have to do.
Bobby Flay
Right.
Kristin Cavallari
It's, you know, I would. And I would never rush into something ever again. That's for damn sure. So. Yeah, we'll see. Okay. But. So when you look back, I'm not going to ask you specifically about your divorces, but when you look back at all three of them, is there one pattern that you notice? Even if that pattern is picking the same type of woman, is there something that you've been able to look back on and really learn from and grow from? No.
Bobby Flay
They were completely different.
Kristin Cavallari
All three completely different.
Bobby Flay
All three very completely different. You know, obviously I find them to be amazing people, otherwise I wouldn't have. Wouldn't have married them, of course. But, you know, listen, things. Things happen. Two of my marriages were very short and one was a lot longer, but they were just very, very different. And some in somewhat. They were under different circumstances.
Kristin Cavallari
Right.
Bobby Flay
First time I was really young.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. I almost feel like those ones shouldn't count, you know, if you're like under 25.
Bobby Flay
Like, let's just. Yeah, I know. And I just thought so. They were. They were all different. But, like, I haven't been married now for 10 years and I actually. I feel more comfortable not being married and I.
Kristin Cavallari
Interesting. Okay.
Bobby Flay
Yeah. Like, I think there's, like, maybe less pressure. I'm not really sure. I think that once, like, for me, like, the thing I noticed is once you. Once you sign a document that says you are now together, there's something that changes. Like, and I think when you try to explain that to people who have never been married before, they don't know what you're talking about. What's the difference? And I'm like, well, there is difference, but I can't really put my finger on it.
Kristin Cavallari
You know, what I've said is I'm open to the idea of telling everyone I'm married, but not actually legally being married.
Bobby Flay
Okay.
Kristin Cavallari
You know what I mean? Like, even having a ceremony, everyone think.
Bobby Flay
Get a big ring, have a party. Right? Exactly.
Kristin Cavallari
But not going through with it legally.
Bobby Flay
Yeah.
Kristin Cavallari
Just. I don't know. So everyone keeps. Not trying is the wrong word. But just so everyone doesn't get too comfortable.
Bobby Flay
Yeah.
Kristin Cavallari
Maybe is the right thing. You could still leave if you needed to a lot easier. Easier.
Bobby Flay
Yeah. Because obviously when it comes time to end it. It's not that simple.
Kristin Cavallari
It's not simple. Okay, guys. Let's take a minute here to talk about a brand you know I love. And that is Element. Element is a zero sugar electrolyte drink mix and now sparkling electrolyte water. I go in the sauna a few times a week and I just notice a huge difference when I'm consistently taking electrolytes. I think because in my daily life I'm doing so many things that deplete electrolytes that it's really important to be putting them back in my body. And so I always have these little sticks with me. I travel with them. I'm doing at least one something, sometimes two a day. And I just, I really feel like it gives me more energy. I just feel better all around. And guys, right now Element is offering a free sample pack with any purchase. That's a single serving packets free with any Element order. Anytime I'm home, I'm always in sweats and socks and I love these so much. So guys, give yourself the luxury you deserve with quince. You guys know I absolutely love this brand and that is Symbiotica. I always get so excited to talk to you guys about Symbiotica. I am such a health nut. I'm constantly reading ingredient labels and I'm just hyper aware of what I'm putting in my body, especially when it comes to supplements. So that's why I'm such a huge fan of Symbiotica because they are top notch. Spring is well on its way and I for one am very excited. And so now is the time to refocus on our health goals. I'm all about keeping my wellness routine simple but effective. Symbiotica helps me do just that. I just pop a magnesium packet before I go to bed and I wake up feeling refreshed, clear headed and actually rested. But it's not just about sleep. Magnesium also helps with stress, brain function and workout recovery. Like I said, guys, Symbiotica is as clean as it gets. No seed oils, preservatives or artificial junk. Just high quality, real ingredients that actually do something. I'm telling you, you guys, when you take this stuff consistently, you will see and feel a difference. I have so many of these little packets with me. Not only do I take the magnesium, I love their glutathione, I love their vitamin C. And I actually took all of these with me on my podcast tour which made it really easy to stay on track. Symbiotica Wellness made simple. Guys, go to symbiotica.com/honest for 20% off plus free shipping. That's symbiotica.com/hearly for 20% off and free shipping. Well, okay, speaking of that, you are recently, fairly recently single.
Bobby Flay
Am I?
Kristin Cavallari
That's what I hear.
Bobby Flay
That's what People magazine is reporting.
Kristin Cavallari
Yes, let's be honest and People magazine.
Bobby Flay
Exactly.
Kristin Cavallari
True journalism.
Bobby Flay
Exactly.
Kristin Cavallari
Are you back on the dating side?
Bobby Flay
Okay, so this is what I'm really Here. I really. I. I need some advice from you.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay, let's go.
Bobby Flay
Because, like, the answer is, I don't know if I'm on the dating scene. I just. I'm like, honestly, I don't know what to do.
Kristin Cavallari
I love that answer.
Bobby Flay
Because I'm. I'm single. Okay, and so what does that mean? Do you need to, like, get back out there right away? Do you need to start dating people? Can't you just go out and have fun with friends?
Kristin Cavallari
Right.
Bobby Flay
Like, honestly, like, to me, that. That's. That's. That's my favorite thing to do. Just because it's. It's. Again, there's no pressure. You don't have to say, oh, I'm. I'm. I'm going out with this person. I didn't want to tell you that I was going out with this person.
Kristin Cavallari
It's like, oh, I know. It's.
Bobby Flay
It's just. It's just easier.
Kristin Cavallari
It is easier.
Bobby Flay
And so. But that's. But then again, you also. Do you want to have a relationship like, that you can build upon? I mean, there's give and take in both. In both parts of it. But for me, it's like, if I wanted to start dating again, what do I do? I'm not going on the apps.
Kristin Cavallari
Right. Okay, so that was. How are you meeting people? Well, you're completely against the apps. Not even Raya.
Bobby Flay
I can't do it. I know, and I'll tell you why I can't. I don't want to. I'm a very private person with my private life. Other people like to talk about my private life. I don't like to talk about it because the rest of my life is so public, because I've been on television basically my entire adult life.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
So I like keeping as much as I can in my private life to myself. But that said, some. It seems like there are some people who are interested in what I'm doing in my. In my personal life. I'm not really sure why. It's not that exciting, but I. I do wonder. And so I don't want to go on the apps because then it becomes a public thing.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
Somebody's gonna make it public.
Kristin Cavallari
Yep.
Bobby Flay
And so. But that's how everybody's meeting people these days.
Kristin Cavallari
It is. I know.
Bobby Flay
And so I guess, you know, I guess the. You know, for me. For me, you know, I'm so old school when it comes to this stuff. You know, like, my father, like, always taught me to be, like, a gentleman and to do things the right way. And there's a proper, like, process to go about it. And, you know, and I kind of like that kind of old school way of thinking and trying to meet somebody, but people aren't used to doing that anymore.
Kristin Cavallari
I know. It's a different world out there.
Bobby Flay
Yeah.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. Would you ever slide into the DMs or have you ever?
Bobby Flay
I have, but never in a way that would be like, actually, I have to. I have. I want to talk to you about this.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay.
Bobby Flay
Because you and I had a situation where I was going to Nashville. Okay. Yeah, yeah.
Kristin Cavallari
Let's talk about this.
Bobby Flay
Can I tell us.
Kristin Cavallari
Yes, absolutely.
Bobby Flay
I was going to. I was coming to Nashville literally for one day for a meeting, and I was like, who do I know in Nashville? Okay. So I DM'd you.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
And I was like. And. And I said to you, now I know what I. What words I use specifically because you reminded me. I said, can I. I'm gonna be in Nashville for one night. Can I take you to dinner?
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
And you literally said something to me like, I'm already, like, dating somebody.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. Or I don't think it was like, I'm. I was like, I'm. I'm over dating right now. It was like, I was, like, burnt out on dating or something. Yeah. So I was just like, no.
Bobby Flay
You said, I've already started seeing somebody.
Kristin Cavallari
Oh, man. Okay.
Bobby Flay
And I said, I just want to go to dinner with you.
Kristin Cavallari
I was like, foot and mouth.
Bobby Flay
No, no. And then. And you. And then, of course, like, you were like, oh, okay, I get it. And then.
Kristin Cavallari
And we had the best time. Yeah.
Bobby Flay
But what you taught me is something I didn't know. You said. The words that you use made me feel that way. You said. When you. When you said, can I take you to dinner?
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. To me, that is a date.
Bobby Flay
Okay.
Kristin Cavallari
Right.
Bobby Flay
I mean, I didn't think of it that way.
Kristin Cavallari
I know.
Bobby Flay
I. And what I should have said was, will you have. What am I supposed to say?
Kristin Cavallari
Well, right now, I'm trying to think about it, but also, I think there's a fair argument that I shouldn't just assume I said this to you, too. I probably shouldn't have just assumed that you also wanted to take me on a date. I think that's fair, too. I'm. Everyone calm down.
Bobby Flay
Take it easy.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. Relax, Kristen.
Bobby Flay
Yes, exactly.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. So I think there's a combination of that. But I guess the right thing to do is say, hey, I'm going to be in Nashville for a day. If you're free, I'd love to go to dinner.
Bobby Flay
Okay.
Kristin Cavallari
Instead of like, take you to dinner maybe?
Bobby Flay
Really?
Kristin Cavallari
I don't know. Yeah, I think, like, the take you to dinner thing is more where it was like, oh, that seems like a day.
Bobby Flay
Okay. All right, so my bad.
Kristin Cavallari
No, hey, listen, it worked out. It's all good. We ended up going to dinner.
Bobby Flay
Yeah. Yeah. But that's the thing I don't get, because everything is now through technology.
Kristin Cavallari
I know.
Bobby Flay
It's like, it's like if I meet somebody, like, if somebody says to me, my ex girlfriend, who is the loveliest person in the world. We were put together by a mutual friend and I texted her and I said, do you have time for a call? And like, you know, some of the people that, like, work for me are like in their 30s and they're like, that never happens. Everything is always by text. Yeah, right.
Kristin Cavallari
That is a great move, though, for a guy is picking up the phone and calling a girl.
Bobby Flay
I made an. I literally made an appointment with her online on text to have a phone call with her just so we can get a vibe from each other, because.
Kristin Cavallari
You get nothing on text.
Bobby Flay
And we talked for like 45 minutes, and then the next thing was like, let's meet.
Kristin Cavallari
I love that.
Bobby Flay
Yeah. I mean, I think that that's.
Kristin Cavallari
That's a great way to gauge if you're gonna have any sort of connection with or chemistry with someone. Yeah. Picking up the phone, that's a great. A great skill to have. No one does that anymore. Okay. So you're not sliding into the DMs or you have once. What's your pickup line if you do that?
Bobby Flay
I don't. I don't do that.
Kristin Cavallari
No, it's. No, like, it's just, I don't do.
Bobby Flay
I don't do that. Like, and again, I think that sometimes you can. It can be misconstrued as to why you're texting somebody.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah, right.
Bobby Flay
Exactly. And so I like, if there's something that I think somebody does is really cool, I'll just say that.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
I won't be like, hey, let's get together.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. Right, right. Okay, that's nice. Yeah, I like that. Okay, so you do have really great dating stories. I mean, just laughing our asses off. And I'm not going to make you names. If you wanted to, we wouldn't hate you for it because it does make the story.
Bobby Flay
No, no, no, no, no. I mean, okay, fine, I can't kiss and tell.
Kristin Cavallari
I know, and I really respect that about you, but I did ask you beforehand Will you give us just one good dating story? Because you got.
Bobby Flay
I'm going to give you. Well, I'm going to. I'm going to give you a story, and I don't know if it was a dating story or not. And this. And, and this is. See, like you want to have me on. So I. I'll talk about this stuff, but I want to be here because I want advice from you.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay.
Bobby Flay
Okay. I mean, you. You are. You are a dating expert. Okay. I don't know about that. You listen. Listen. I listen to your podcast every Tuesday.
Kristin Cavallari
I know. You're the best.
Bobby Flay
I'm like. I'm like. I'm like, maybe I'm going to learn something today. I love you. I do. Listen to it. I know you do.
Kristin Cavallari
You're very sweet.
Bobby Flay
Anyway, so let me ask your opinion.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay.
Bobby Flay
So obviously I'm not going to mention any names, so. A handful of years ago, I had just gotten divorced. I just. I just gotten separated. And a woman who I was definitely interested in sort of came into my universe one night and she came to the restaurant, she came to Gato, and she was with a bunch of her girls, and I cooked dinner for them.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay.
Bobby Flay
And at the end of the night, she's like, sit down. Hang out with us. And she's like, we're gonna go to this bar and hotel. Will you join us? And I was like, sure. So we go to the bar in the hotel and we have the best time. And now it's like 2:00 in the morning. It's the middle of summer, It's a beautiful night out, and there's like, lots of people there. And she says to me, let's go for a walk in the city.
Kristin Cavallari
I love this.
Bobby Flay
And I was like, wow.
Kristin Cavallari
Wow, I'm in.
Bobby Flay
So, see, but see, that's not what I was thinking.
Kristin Cavallari
Oh, really?
Bobby Flay
No. Because this might be hard for you to believe. I'm really shy when it comes to this stuff.
Kristin Cavallari
Oh, interesting. I wouldn't see that.
Bobby Flay
Yeah, I'm very, like. I am very shy when it comes to this kind of stuff.
Kristin Cavallari
I think that's sweet.
Bobby Flay
And I think it's. Again, I think it has something to do with the fact of my father teaching me to be the gentleman, you know?
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
And so I. So we go for this walk for like two hours.
Kristin Cavallari
Wow.
Bobby Flay
And we. And she was staying in New York, wasn't living in New York. And we get. I walk her back to her hotel and there's that moment.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah, that fucking moment.
Bobby Flay
Okay, here's the moment. Okay. This is a girl that was definitely had on my radar, like in a, in a, in a fantasy world, not in a real world. Like, I didn't really know her that well.
Kristin Cavallari
But you knew who she was for a long time and. Yeah, okay.
Bobby Flay
Yes, exactly. And here's the moment. And, you know, it's 2:00 in the morning. We've had this lovely evening together. And I, I just looked at her, I was like, thank you so much. Have a great night. And she looked at me like, wow. And she went upstairs. Okay. And my girlfriends, like friends who are women, have said to me literally since that day that they're like, you totally blew it.
Kristin Cavallari
Like, that was, that was your chance.
Bobby Flay
That was your chance. Now, now the question is, and the reason why I didn't make any moves is because I had just really kind of was like, first night we had done anything socially together, and I didn't want to, I didn't want to blow it, and I wanted, I didn't want to be that guy, which I love.
Kristin Cavallari
So I think there's two things.
Bobby Flay
Okay. I think I love that you're ready. You're ready for this. Go.
Kristin Cavallari
But did you follow up and ask her out later?
Bobby Flay
I did.
Kristin Cavallari
And what happened?
Bobby Flay
Okay, well, so the next morning we had breakfast together. Oh, well, like, we just met. It's like, for coffee.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay.
Bobby Flay
And then she. She asked me to. This is so weird. She asked me to go. Go to a party with her the next night. And then. And then she literally blew me off.
Kristin Cavallari
Like, ghosted you?
Bobby Flay
Like, not. I wouldn't say ghosted. That would be strong. But basically she was just like, it didn't happen.
Kristin Cavallari
Interesting.
Bobby Flay
So I don't know, like, did I.
Kristin Cavallari
Like, did you actually blow it in that moment? Yeah, I don't think so. Because I will say, though, the couple of dates that I went on in the my, you know, post divorce era, in the last four and a half years, the two guys who did not try to kiss me, I did walk away from it being like, what the hell? One guy in particular, as he was dropping me off, asked me out again, but didn't make a move. So I knew he was interested, but I also was like, but why didn't he try? So I think it is confusing for a girl, but it's not. Like, I wouldn't be like, oh, he blew it and not go out with him again. So that's interesting.
Bobby Flay
I don't know.
Kristin Cavallari
I don't know. The one that got away, perhaps.
Bobby Flay
Well, maybe I just didn't have it.
Kristin Cavallari
You blew it at Brad kiss the next day.
Bobby Flay
I didn't have it anyway. Exactly. She's like, thank God he didn't try to kiss me. See, I have to come back every week because this is how I learn.
Kristin Cavallari

Well, I want to know a couple other cringy things that Girls have done on dates. Have there been, like, some real cringy moments that you're just like.
Bobby Flay
I mean, not really. I've actually had a pretty good dating life. I mean, my dating life. What's that? That's so weird. I just, I actually like going out on dates.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah, you seem like you would, like. I feel like I'm good on a date.
Bobby Flay
I like. Well, I like going out on dates because I like actually making plans and making sure that everything is set. Like, I would never, like, call somebody up and say, what do you want to do?
Kristin Cavallari
Oh, God, I love you for that so much. The guy.
Bobby Flay
When do you want to go?
Kristin Cavallari
I hate that. That's such a buzzkill. Just make a plan. Be a man and make a plan.
Bobby Flay
I, I, sometimes I'll, like, if it's a first date or something, I'll say, here's what I'm thinking. Are you into this? Because I, I can arrange for us to go here or do this if you're into that. If not, that's cool, too.
Kristin Cavallari
That's nice. Yeah.
Bobby Flay
But I think it's important to. I, I think it's important. I mean, you know, equality everywhere, of course. But I think for, like, the old school in me guy, I'm gonna, I want to take care of, taking care of, you know, making reservations.
Kristin Cavallari
I love that. That is lost too. I feel like now guys don't do that anymore. I mean, not really. I think it's this generation. They just don't know how to just take charge and just plan a date. Just do the damn thing. So what is a typical date for you?
Bobby Flay
Usually we go to lunch or dinner or something like that.
Kristin Cavallari
Are you picking them up?
Bobby Flay
Like, okay, I'm into picking people up at their house if, if that's something.
Kristin Cavallari
In your car or a driver.
Bobby Flay
Well, if I'm going out to dinner, I'm not driving.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay. Right.
Bobby Flay
Because. Yeah.
Kristin Cavallari
If you have a drink or what. Yeah, yeah.
Bobby Flay
You don't want to. You don't want to do that. So definitely not an Uber X.
Kristin Cavallari
A regular.
Bobby Flay
A good car.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. Yeah.
Bobby Flay
No, but, like, you know, it's, it's. I, I think that kind of stuff is really, really important. I think, like, it's, at some point, if the person you're dating is like, you know, you're being too formal with me. I get it. But I'd rather step it back.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
As opposed to doing the opposite.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah, I agree.
Bobby Flay
I mean, I'll, I will tell you, like, I, I, I've had. I, like, as I said, I Like dating. So I like, I like the act of, like, creating the date and having the date and all that. But there was one time where I made all these plans and then the person I went out with was just like, no, we're not going there. I've made different. I've made different plans and who we're gonna go here and here.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah, you told me this story that, I mean, God, just completely kills it. That's a bummer.
Bobby Flay
Well, I mean, listen, it happens.
Kristin Cavallari
It happens.
Bobby Flay
It just, it's. And I. And also, like, if you go. I think I feel like if you go on a date and it's not a great date, it's okay.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah, right?
Bobby Flay
It's not the end of the world.
Kristin Cavallari
That's true. Yeah.
Bobby Flay
You know, and maybe you become friends with the person.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah, that is true. You know, has that happened to you a lot? I feel like that never happens to me.
Bobby Flay
No, it happens. Like I'm. I'm pretty friendly with most of the.
Kristin Cavallari
People that I've gone on a date with. Yeah. That's nice. I would imagine that when you take girls to dinner, obviously all of these chefs and restaurants know who you are. Is it just like a Bobby?
Bobby Flay
Oh, well, that's the other thing you don't want to do. Do that too much because then it looks like you're showing off and stuff like that. So, like, I like, especially like on a first day, I like a low key plate.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay. Right.
Bobby Flay
Low key place.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
Like, you're not trying to like show all of your, all of your strut.
Kristin Cavallari
Put everything out on the table like that. I know. I agree with you. Okay. I want to talk about.
Bobby Flay
You have notes.
Kristin Cavallari
I know. I've got. I prepare, I prep this stuff. I take this seriously. Okay. So being back on the dating scene in the last four years, a big thing for girls is when you are dating someone, what you cook for a man for first time. Okay.
Bobby Flay
Really?
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. Like anytime I've cooked for a guy for the first time, I'm calling multiple friends. I'm being like, what do you think about this? Should I do this? Because kind of what you're saying, you want to make a great meal, but you don't want it to seem like you tried so hard. Right. And you go over the top. So what is a foolproof dinner that girls can be making guys for the first time, they cook for them?
Bobby Flay
Chicken Milanese.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay.
Bobby Flay
That to me, that's one of my favorite things to eat and to cook. You know, it's like, it's. It's it's got the best of both worlds. It's got crispiness, it has healthiness. It's easy to make. You probably won't overcook it, hopefully.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
But look, it's a breaded chicken cutlet.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
You know, you have to know how to do that. You have to saute in the pan, and then, like, during the summer, like, lots of tomatoes, arugula, some parmesan cheese, olive oil, vinegar. Boom, you're done.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay, great.
Bobby Flay
So you basically have a salad on top of this crispy chicken dish, and I think that's a beautiful dish. Okay.
Kristin Cavallari
Yum. That's great. I always go for steak, but I'm. I'm into that.
Bobby Flay
You are a very good eater.
Kristin Cavallari
I am a good eater.
Bobby Flay
I noticed. I noticed when we went to dinner, we were at Husk.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
Which I know you like to take a lot of people to.
Kristin Cavallari
I took you to my date spot. Well, this isn't a date, Bobby, but I'm taking you to my date spot.
Bobby Flay
Well, I gave you a list of places.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. And that was on there.
Bobby Flay
Yeah. You were like, let's go to Husk. I was like, okay. Just one of the dozens, right? Exactly.
Kristin Cavallari
I took probably four or five guys there.
Bobby Flay
Really?
Kristin Cavallari
Five? Yeah.
Bobby Flay
Steph really knows you very well there. Here comes another one. Oh, no. They put me on that list.
Kristin Cavallari
You're on that list.
Bobby Flay
I can promise you. Right now, there's a. In the kitchen, when you open the doors, only the staff can see. There's a list of all of Casey's.
Kristin Cavallari
And they're all just crossed off.
Bobby Flay
Exactly.
Kristin Cavallari
All the guys.
Bobby Flay
I'm there. Bobby Flay. Gone.
Kristin Cavallari
You're on there.
Bobby Flay
Exactly.
Kristin Cavallari
Oh, my God. But, yeah, Husk was great. Did you like it?
Bobby Flay
Loved it.
Kristin Cavallari
I mean, it's like an iconic restaurant, I think, for Nashville. And I think their other one, their first one was Charleston. I can't remember now. Yeah, yeah.
Bobby Flay
But Husk is very good.
Kristin Cavallari
But, yeah, I like to eat. People don't think that about me.
Bobby Flay
But you eat everything.
Kristin Cavallari
I do like you.
Bobby Flay
You know, the stereotypical, like, you know, hot girl meal. Right. It's like, we eat salads. You know, it's like. Which is crazy. But there was something on the menu.
Kristin Cavallari
The fried pig's ears.
Bobby Flay
Yes, exactly. You were like, having that right away.
Kristin Cavallari
They're my favorite. I was like, okay, I'm an adventurous eater.
Bobby Flay
Yes.
Kristin Cavallari
I'll try just about anything. Yeah. Okay. Flip side is, what do you cook to impress a girl for the first time? Do you feel like you have to go all out since you are a chef, all out.
Bobby Flay
No.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay.
Bobby Flay
Like in other words, I. When I cook at home, the food is incredibly simple.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay.
Bobby Flay
And. And it's like I'm not there in my chef coat, like with tweezers putting on micro greens.
Kristin Cavallari
I would love to see that. First time you're cooking for a girl. Could you imagine with her?
Bobby Flay
Yes. Actually, you know what? That's a good idea. Please do that.
Kristin Cavallari
And then come back and we'll talk about.
Bobby Flay
Yeah, she left right away.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah, she got out of there so fast.
Bobby Flay
No, but it's usually like, I usually like make, make like fresh pasta. Like I'll make the noodles and like I'll do something like very seasonal.
Kristin Cavallari
Nice.
Bobby Flay
So like again, like if it's in the middle of summer, like, just like a cherry tomato sauce with some garlic, some parmesan cheese, olive oil, maybe some Calabria chilies. Really simple things like that. Like, and just, just so, like they like so, you know, so it's a handcrafted dish, but it's something like that. Everybody's gonna want to eat.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. What if the girl doesn't eat gluten?
Bobby Flay
Well, I'll know that.
Kristin Cavallari
Get out.
Bobby Flay
No, no, I'll make something else free. Yeah, exactly.
Kristin Cavallari
Do you make gluten free pasta?
Bobby Flay
No, I wouldn't make. Oh, no, I wouldn't make pasta.
Kristin Cavallari
You're jumping ship.
Bobby Flay
No, I would. I wouldn't make pasta. I would. I would make something that was not. Not good.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay, so you're asking before. Hey, do you have any food intolerance?
Bobby Flay
Always.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. Okay.
Bobby Flay
I always ask. Yeah, any food allergies or aversions?
Kristin Cavallari
Okay, tell me. Okay. Yeah. Okay, I like that. Interesting. Yeah.
Bobby Flay
Because listen, I. We do that in the restaurant.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
You have every table. If somebody has a. Something that they have to deal with.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. Get used to it.
Bobby Flay
Exactly.
Kristin Cavallari
Well, as busy as you are, do you see yourself slowing down anytime soon? Like what. When are you going to retire? Do you ever think about it? What is the next 10 years like for you?
Bobby Flay
Discovery. I mean, I, you know, this book is called Chapter one. And you know, everybody keeps asking me already, like, what's chapter two? It's probably going to be my ventures in. In Italy, which is the place that I really love more than anything else. I invited you to come to the Amalfi coast with us and you were like, I'm going to Greece.
Kristin Cavallari
Well, Shay, so here's the thing about me. Everything is planned out. I'm very scheduled. I can't just do last minute. If you want me to go to Italy you need to book me a few months. I was also trying to get to the Hamptons, too. I know, I know. Listen, we have the best time.
Bobby Flay
I cook three meals a day.
Kristin Cavallari
That's why I'm coming. Just to eat.
Bobby Flay
Okay, we got your next.
Kristin Cavallari
I'm coming, I'm coming. I mean, we'll do that.
Bobby Flay
We'll book you for next summer, right?
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah, exactly. Lock me in.
Bobby Flay
Now you're locked in.
Kristin Cavallari
Great.
Bobby Flay
Okay. Your room is safe.
Kristin Cavallari
I appreciate that.
Bobby Flay
Okay.
Kristin Cavallari
I'm bringing my Gusbin Justin.
Bobby Flay
Okay, no problem.
Kristin Cavallari
You'll love him. Yeah, yeah. Great. Okay. Okay, great. I don't even know what we were talking about. Oh, no, you're. The next 10 years for you now.
Bobby Flay
The next 10 years. I mean, probably a lot more of the same. I mean, you know, I've been at the food network for 30 something years.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. And you've got a great schedule with that. I mean, you can knock out a show in a short one.
Bobby Flay
Well, I have my own production company, so we schedule it the way we want to. And I'm a. I'm a beast when it comes to work. Like, I work ethic to me is the most important thing. Thankfully, my daughter has the same thing.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
And so. So I'll do like 26 or 36 episodes of Beat Bobby Flay in a row.
Kristin Cavallari
That's amazing. And like. And how many weeks?
Bobby Flay
Well, we do two a day.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay.
Bobby Flay
You did the show a bunch of times.
Kristin Cavallari
I did the show a long time ago.
Bobby Flay
I want to have you back.
Kristin Cavallari
I know. I was trying to make it work this fall.
Bobby Flay
Oh, that's right.
Kristin Cavallari
You almost came. You almost came. I know. Yeah.
Bobby Flay
All right.
Kristin Cavallari
That was a last minute thing. We got to book it now. Bobby, I'm booked through March right now.
Bobby Flay
Are you really?
Kristin Cavallari
I really am. Well, I've got a little opening here in December.
Bobby Flay
Make sure she's on the books. Okay.
Kristin Cavallari
But you know what? When your kids are little. Cause the thing is, I have my kids.
Bobby Flay
How old are they?
Kristin Cavallari
So 12, 10 and almost nine. So, you know, it's like, I can't. My time is limited. But I'm coming to the Hamptons.
Bobby Flay
All right, we'll book you.
Kristin Cavallari
Great.
Bobby Flay
For sure.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay. So you're not slowing down anyway, so soon you're traveling.
Bobby Flay
Italy is like, not just the Amalfi coast, but Italy itself is like, like, very special to me. There was a moment in time where after I had gotten divorced, I had been divorced for a few years, and I was just like, I'm just not feeling I need to recharge myself. And I literally took my cat and went to Rome for six weeks. And I lived like a local in Rome for six weeks. I took language every single day for three hours. I ran the Tiber river every morning. I'm a runner. That's what I do for cardio. And then I. I lived my best life. I was going to lunch and dinner every single day. I literally lost £5 doing it. I believe it happens.
Kristin Cavallari
It's because the quality of food is better. Exactly.
Bobby Flay
But I really love the lifestyle and the people and obviously the food and the culture of Italy and all of it. So I think if, you know, I think I'm gonna spend as much time as I can over there as well.
Kristin Cavallari
That's amazing.
Bobby Flay
I just love Europe.
Kristin Cavallari
It's the best. I agree. Italy. Rome is actually my favorite.
Bobby Flay
Out of everywhere I've been, Italy, people don't know this. You've never been to Paris.
Kristin Cavallari
I've never been to Paris.
Bobby Flay
I know.
Kristin Cavallari
I know. I've been saving it.
Bobby Flay
I went to Paris with Sophie for the Olympics.
Kristin Cavallari
Your daughter. Yeah. I want to ask you about Sophie because, you know, you guys are very close.
Bobby Flay
Very.
Kristin Cavallari
And she's 28, and, you know, the. The time that we've been able to spend together, I can just tell what a great relationship you guys have together. And so I'm curious what your best parenting advice is. How have you guys been able to have such a great relationship?
Bobby Flay
It's a great. That's a great question. I don't have all the answers. I can promise you that. First of all, I. I have a great kid. Every parent will say that. I got blessed with a kid who, like, she makes it easy for me to parent.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
Okay. So one of the things about. So Sophie's mom is great mom, and she's really strict. I'm less strict than her mom is. And so we make a very, very good team.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
She is, like, always, like, I don't want her, like, when she was a kid, I don't want her to do this and this and this. And I was like, let her do it. If she runs a red light, it's fine. It's called life.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
Right. And you have to learn through things. So the balance of us, the two of us, I think, was really helpful to her. I've only had to have about five conversations, what I call life conversations with Sophie where she did something where I was like, that. You cannot do that. You can't say that. You can't. You can't operate that way. You can't Be.
Kristin Cavallari
And is this as an adult or even, like, teen years? Both. Okay.
Bobby Flay
Both.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
And the one thing about her is that I only have to have that particular conversation once.
Kristin Cavallari
I love that.
Bobby Flay
And she snaps out of it, and she's like, got it. And she moves on, and she. She learns from it, and sometimes she's not happy about it. Of course.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
But. And she moves on, and she. And she makes herself a better person for it.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
So I think letting kids live their life is really important. Letting them make some. Some mistakes. Hopefully they're not big mistakes, and that's. That's the risk. But. And. And also, we talk about any. Anything and everything. We have a very open conversational relationship, and so we're able to talk to each other about everything. I mean, she trusts me. She talks to me about my dating life all the time.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
Like, she gives me the thumbs up and thumbs down.
Kristin Cavallari
I love that.
Bobby Flay
All the time. I love it.
Kristin Cavallari
Have you ever dated someone she didn't like?
Bobby Flay
I've dated people that she wasn't very happy about.
Kristin Cavallari
Okay. Yeah.
Bobby Flay
But you know, and she tells me.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
You know, and I love that. Yeah. That doesn't mean I'm not gonna date the person.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah. I was just gonna ask. Did you continue to date them?
Bobby Flay
But I will tell you that. That when I do date somebody, they're like, I hope Sophie likes me.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah, I love that. Good.
Bobby Flay
But she's. But Sophie's amazing because she's incredibly inclusive. It's one of the. It's one of my favorite words to use with her because she's not a mean girl. You know, She's. She's not. She's not like, okay, I can do this. I can do that, and you can't ever.
Kristin Cavallari
Yeah.
Bobby Flay
