This is let's Be Honest with Kristen Cavallari. A podcast all about getting real and open on everything from sex, relationships, reality tv, wellness, family, and so much more. And just a fair warning, there will probably be some oversharing. Cause I got all the power. Yep. Bobby Blay. Welcome to let's Be Honest. How are you?
A
I'm so glad to be here. You know, I love being in your company.
B
Oh, you're sweet.
A
No, I do. I really.
B
It's very nice.
A
I really do. We had dinner in Nashville a few months ago, and I had the best, most fun time.
B
It was fun. I Actually, we're gonna get to that because you said some of the funniest dating stories that I've ever heard that night. And I was gonna say having a couple drinks with you at dinner is very fun. I mean, I was laughing my ass off. Well, I mean, you're not liquored up today, so we'll see what we can get out of here.
A
I am not liquored up today, but I. You know what? Do you have any tequila?
B
I can get you something.
A
Yeah, I knew I was gonna like the. The. The dinner that we had. As soon as. As soon as you sat down, you're like, yeah. What kind of tequila do you guys.
B
Game over from there? I don't know, though. I'm kind of turning on tequila.
A
You are?
B
I know. I don't know what's going on. I think, honestly, I'm turning on alcohol in general.
A
Okay.
B
I'm just, like, going through a phase, you know?
A
I don't blame you. I mean, it's one of the things that you notice right away when you stop drinking a little bit. Like, things are just clearer.
B
You feel so much. I sleep so much better, too.
A
The sleep is really the key.
B
That's huge because I sleep like shit if I even have one drink right. Okay. But I want to. Let's go back because it's pub day for you. You have a new book out, so congratulations. Book 18.
A
This is my 18th book. It's called Bobby Flay Chap.
B
I mean, that's insane. 18 books. So this is a. It's a cookbook, but it's also a coffee table book.
A
I mean, it's definitely a coffee table book. This is the. I would say the most. This is the nicest book I've done, you know, so it, like, you know, the thing that I really was. One of the things I was really happy about was, like, when I took the first book out, when they sent it to me from the publisher, I was like, is it heavy enough? Like, I want it to have that heft to it?
B
Yeah.
A
And there's. I don't have any books like this. And, you know, it's 100 recipes from my career that I chose, and I updated them for today, and every single recipe has a full page color picture. So it's amazing. It's definitely a gift. It's a coffee table book. It's definitely a collector's item, and it is beautiful.
B
What made you want to do this instead of just a traditional cookbook?
A
I've always wanted. Listen, I'm a chef by trade, and if you're a chef, if you're somebody who loves to cook, like me, and you have an opportunity to write books like this, you always want that thing that is like the big book, you know, it's sort of like the resume of your career. And so, you know, I just feel like I'm just getting started in my career, even though I've been doing it for a long time, and I have lots of other things to do, and I'm doing them now. But I didn't want to leave what I've done behind quite yet. And so I brought this book to life.
B
Amazing.
A
And thank you for asking.
B
Yeah. And it's. I mean, you have it. I think it's worth holding up and showing.
A
I wanted. Oh, where's the camera? Oh, hi. Oh, there. Here you go.
B
It is beautiful.
A
I do want to tell you something. This is the very first book that I've signed.
B
I'm honored.
A
It's got your name in it right here.
B
Look at that. What did you say?
A
I just said.
B
Okay.
A
Yeah, I kept it simple.
B
Classic.
A
Yes, exactly.
B
Classic guy. But how do you have time to do everything because you are busy. This is your 18th book.
A
18Th book.
B
You have multiple TV shows, you're a dad. You're constantly cranking out content for social media. I mean, you. You're opening multiple restaurants still. How do you. Or I guess the better Question is, what motivates you to keep doing it all? What gets you out of bed in the morning?
A
I think it's, you know, I dropped outta high school when I was like 16 or 17 years old, 10th grade. I was done. And I won't bore you with all the details. That's another podcast.
B
I don't know, I feel like that.
A
Is a pretty good story. Well, I mean, it's just a long story, but you know, basically I could not really learn in school in a traditional way and I was going to when I was in high school. They weren't testing kids for every single thing possible, but I definitely had some sort of or do have some learning disorder of some sort or disability. And so I, I did not want to open an English textbook. Ironically, I have 18 cookbooks, but, but I didn't want to open an English textbook and learn. That was, that was not the way I was going to do it. So I did no work. It wasn't that I was a bad student. I was not a student. I did nothing. And you know, I was hanging out with my friends, I was playing sports, I was, I was a good athlete, but that was all I was interested in. And then when I finally quit high school, I went to work in a restaurant just because I needed a job. And I was like, I was loving it because I was, for the first time I was learning something and I was doing it by using my hands.
B
Yeah.
A
And I needed a vocational education which we don't have enough of in this country.
B
Yeah.
A
And I'm not going to get in a soap up soapbox about that. But I really believe that not every kid learns the same way.
B
I completely agree.
A
Me included.
B
Yeah. I mean having three kids, I see that. Just with my own kids, you know, it's very, they're different. Yeah. Very different. Yeah.
A
So. So getting back to your question, I, I do it because I love to cook so much. It's the way that I show my adoration to my, my family. I cook for them and I cook all the time. I cook in some way, shape or form almost every single day.
B
Wow.
A
Almost every single day.
B
Do you ever get in a, in a slump though, where you're just like, ah, you're uninspired, you don't have a leg. I mean that happens to me all the time.
A
It's like writer's block, you know, it's the same thing. It's like, I don't want to make the same thing over again and like, but I need inspiration. And so I travel for Inspiration.
B
Okay. Yeah.
A
And it could be local travel. It could be like, I'm going to go to a restaurant in LA tonight and go check out what they're doing, because I'm going to learn something.
B
Yeah.
A
Or it can be like, I'm going to go to Italy today and spend a week there and just eat and see what's going on. I mean, so it can be any. Anything along those lines. I always get inspired no matter where I am when it comes to cooking.
B
Okay. Yeah. I love that. And then out of all of the job titles that you do have, so TV personality, chef, obviously, author, what is your favorite cooking? So just chef?
A
Yeah, Being a chef.
B
Yeah.
A
In my restaurants, to me, that's the. Like, when I put my apron on, it's my. It's my sort of protector from the world, you know, it's my shield.
B
Yep.
A
And it's the place that I love to be. I love to insp. People that work with me are alongside of me. And also, it's just my happiest place. It's like my days go really quick when I'm in my chef whites and I'm cooking.
B
I love that. Okay, I wanna shift gears for a minute.
A
Okay. Shocking.
B
You ready?
A
Yeah.
B
That's all fine and great, Bobby, but I'm just kidding. Okay. So you've been married three times.
A
Oh, my God. This is.
B
Let's be honest.
A
I know. Wait, have I. Yes, I have.
B
Right. Okay. So is marriage off the table completely, or would you do it again right to the jugular? I'm just gonna go in here. Do you want that drink now?
A
No, no, I'm okay. I'm, like, starting to sweat a little bit.
B
It's hot in here.
A
It's all right. I knew it. Listen, when I called you and said, can I please be on your podcast? I knew what I was getting myself. I knew who you are. Is it off the table? If you asked me today, I would. I'd say probably yes.
B
Okay.
A
Because I don't know. You know, for me, it hasn't been the best situation, obviously. That said, I don't feel like I need to do it again.
B
Right.
A
I have an amazing daughter who's 28 years old. I'm not having any more kids as far as I know. And I just think, like, I would be interested in a life partner for sure, but I don't think it necessarily needs the documentation.
B
I get that. Even doing it one time, I'm sort of like, what's the point?
A
How do you feel?
B
I mean, similar to you. I'M in no rush. I feel like I would maybe get married again, but it's not something that I have to do.
A
Right.
B
It's, you know, I would. And I would never rush into something ever again. That's for damn sure. So. Yeah, we'll see.
A
Okay.
B
But. So when you look back, I'm not going to ask you specifically about your divorces, but when you look back at all three of them, is there one pattern that you notice? Even if that pattern is picking the same type of woman, is there something that you've been able to look back on and really learn from and grow from?
A
No. They were completely different.
B
All three completely different.
A
All three very completely different. You know, obviously I find them to be amazing people. Otherwise I wouldn't have made. Wouldn't have married them, of course. But, you know, listen, things. Things happen. Two of my marriages were very short and one was a lot longer, but they were just very, very different. And some in somewhat. They were under different circumstances.
B
Right.
A
First time, I was really young.
B
Yeah. I almost feel like those ones shouldn't count, you know, if you're like, yeah. Under 25.
A
Like, let's just. Yeah, I know. And I just thought so. They were. They were all different. But, like, I haven't been married now for 10 years, and I actually. I feel more comfortable not being married. And I'm.
B
Interesting. Okay.
A
Yeah. Like, I think there's, like, maybe less pressure. I'm not really sure. I think that once, like, for me, like, the thing I noticed is once you. Once you sign a document that says you are now together, there's something that changes. Like, and I think when you try to explain that to people who have never been married before, they don't know what you're talking about. They're like, what's the difference? And I'm like, well, there is difference, but I can't really put my finger on it.
B
You know, what I've said is I'm open to the idea of telling everyone I'm married, but not actually legally being married.
A
Okay.
B
You know what I mean? Like, even having a ceremony, everyone thinks.
A
Get a big ring, have a party. Right. Exactly.
B
But not going through with it legally.
A
Yeah.
B
Just. I don't know. So everyone keeps. Not trying is the wrong word, but just so everyone doesn't get too comfortable.
A
Yeah.
B
Maybe is the right thing. You could still leave if you needed to a lot easier.
A
Easier.
B
Easier, yeah.
A
Because obviously when it comes time to end it. It's not that simple.
B

A
Am I?
B
That's what I hear.
A
That's what People magazine is reporting. Yes.
B
Let's be honest. And People magazine.
A
Exactly.
B
Not true journalism.
A
Exactly.
B
Are you back on the dating scene?
A
Okay, so this is what. I'm really here. I. I really. I. I need some advice from you.
B
Okay, let's go.
A
Because, like, the answer is, I don't know if I'm on the dating scene. I just. I'm like, honestly, I don't know what to do. I love that answer because I'm. I'm single.
B
Okay.
A
And so what does that mean? Do you need to, like, get back out there right away? Do you need to start dating people? Can't you just go out and have fun with friends?
B
Right.
A
Like, honestly, like, to me, that, That's, That's. That's my favorite thing to do. Just because it's. It's. Again, there's no pressure. You don't have to say, oh, I'm. I'm. I'm going out with this person. I didn't want to tell you that I was going out with this person.
B
It's like, oh, I know. It's.
A
It's just. It's just easier.
B
It is easier.
A
And so. But that's. But then again, you also. Do you want to have a relationship like, that you can build upon? I mean, there's give and take in both. In both parts of it. But for me, it's like, if I wanted to start dating again, what do I do? I'm not going on the apps.
B
Right.
A
Okay.
B
So that was.
A
Okay.
B
How are you meeting people? Well, you're completely against the apps. Not even Raya.
A
I can't do it.
B
I know.
A
And I'll tell you why I can't. I. I don't want to. I'm a very private person.
B
Yeah.
A
With my private life. Other people like to talk about my private life. I don't like to talk about it because the rest of my life is so public, because I've been on television basically my entire adult life.
B
Yeah.
A
So I like keeping as much as I can my private life to myself. But that said, some. It seems like there are some people who are interested in what I'm doing in my. In my personal life. I'm not really sure why. It's not that exciting, but I. I do wonder. And so I don't want to go on the apps because then it becomes a public.
B
Yeah.
A
Somebody's going to make it public.
B
Yep.
A
And so. But that's how everybody's meeting people these days.
B
It is. I know.
A
And so I guess, you know, I guess the, you know, for me for me, you know, I'm so old school when it comes to this stuff. You know, like, my father, like, always taught me to be, like. Like a gentleman and to do things the right way, and there's a proper, like, process to go about it and.
B
Yeah.
A
And, you know, and I kind of like that kind of old school way of thinking and trying to meet somebody, but people aren't used to doing that anymore.
B
I know. It's a different world out there.
A
Yeah.
B
Yeah. Would you ever slide into the DMs, or have you ever?
A
I have, but never in a way that would be like, actually, I have to. I have. I want to talk to you about this.
B
Okay.
A
Because you and I had a situation where I was going to Nash. Okay. Yeah.
B
Let's talk.
A
Can I tell us.
B
Yes.
A
Okay.
B
Absolutely.
A
I was going to. I was coming to Nashville, literally for one day for a meeting, and I was like, who do I know in Nashville? Okay. So I DM'd you.
B
Yeah.
A
And I was like. And. And I said to you, now I know what I. What words I use specifically because you reminded me. I said, can I. I'm gonna be in Nashville for one night. Can I take you to dinner?
B
Yeah.
A
And you literally said something to me, like, I'm already, like, dating somebody.
B
Yeah. Or like, it was like I was like, I'm. I'm over dating right now. It was like I was, like, burnt out on dating or something. Yeah. So I was just.
A
No, you said, I already started seeing somebody.
B
Oh, me. Okay.
A
And I said, I just want to go to dinner with you.
B
I was like, foot and mouth.
A
No, no. And then. And you. And then, of course, like, you were like, oh, okay, I get it.
B
Yeah.
A
And then.
B
And we had the best time. Yeah.
A
But what you taught me is something I didn't know you said. The words that you use made me feel that way. You said. When you. When you said, can I take you to dinner?
B
Yeah. To me, that is a date.
A
Okay.
B
Right.
A
I mean, I didn't think of it that way.
B
I know.
A
I. And what I should have said was, will you have. What am I supposed to say?
B
Well, right now, I'm trying to think about it, but also, I think there's a fair argument that I shouldn't just assume I said this to you, too. I probably shouldn't have just assumed that you also wanted to take me on a date. I think that's fair, too. Everyone, just take me out. Calm down.
A
Take it easy.
B
Yeah. Relax, Kristen.
A
Yes, Exactly.
B
Yeah. So I think there's a combination of that. But I guess the right thing to do is say, hey, I'm gonna be in Nashville for a day. If you're free, I'd love to go to dinner.
A
Okay.
B
Instead of, like, take you to dinner maybe?
A
Really?
B
I don't know. Yeah, I think, like, the take you to dinner thing is more where it was like, oh, that seems like a day.
A
Okay. All right, so my bad.
B
No, hey, listen, it worked out. It's all good. We ended up going to dinner.
A
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But that's the thing I don't get. Because everything is now through technology.
B
I know.
A
It's like. It's like if I meet somebody. Like, if somebody says to me, my ex girlfriend, who is the loveliest person in the world, we were put together by a mutual friend, and I texted her and I said, do you have time for a call? And, like, you know, some of the people that, like, work for me are, like, in their 30s, and they're like, that never happens. Everything is always by text.
B
Yeah.
A
Right.
B
That is a great move, though, for a guy is picking up the phone and calling a girl.
A
I made an. I literally made an appointment with her online on text to have a phone call with her just so we can get a vibe from each other.
B
Yes. Because you get nothing on text.
A
And we talked for, like, 45 minutes, and then the next thing was like, let's meet.
B
I love that.
A
Yeah. I mean, I think that that's.
B
That's a great way to gauge if you're gonna have any sort of connection with or chemistry with someone. Yeah. Picking up the phone. That's a great. A great skill to have. No one does that anymore. Okay. So you're not sliding into the dms or you have once. What's your pickup line if you do that?
A
I don't. I don't do that.
B
No, it's. No, like, it's just.
A
I don't do. I don't do that. Like, and. And again, I think that sometimes you can. It can be misconstrued as to why you're texting. Well, yeah, somebody.
B
Yeah, right.
A
Exactly. And so I always, like, if. If there's something that I think somebody does is really cool, I'll just say that.
B
Yeah.
A
I won't be like, hey, let's get together.
B
Yeah. Right, Right. Okay, that's nice. Yeah, I like that. Okay, so you do have really great dating stories. I mean, just laughing our asses off. And I'm not gonna make you say names. If you wanted to, we wouldn't hate you for it, because it does make the story.
A
No, no, no, no, no. I mean, I'm fine. I can't kiss and tell.
B
I know, and I really respect that about you, but I did ask you beforehand, will you give us just one good dating story? Because you've got.
A
I'm gonna give you. Well, I'm going to. I'm going to give you a story, and I don't know if it was a dating story or not. And this. And this is. See, like you want to have me on, so I'll talk about this stuff, but I want to be here because I want advice from you.
B
Okay.
A
Okay. I mean, you. You are. You are a dating expert. Okay. You are.
B
I don't know.
A
This is. This. Listen. I listen to your podcast every Tuesday.
B
I know. You're the best.
A
I'm like. I'm like. I'm like, maybe I'm going to learn something today. I love you. I do. Listen to it. I know you do.
B
You're very sweet.
A
Anyway, so let me ask your opinion.
B
Ok.
A
So obviously I'm not gonna mention any names. So. A handful of years ago, I had just gotten divorced, I'd just gotten separated, and a woman who I was definitely interested in sort of came into my universe one night and she came to the restaurant, she came to Gato, and she was with a bunch of her girls, and I cooked dinner for them. And at the end of the night, she's like, sit down. Hang out with us. And she's like, we're gonna go to this bar and hotel. Will you join us? And I was like, sure. So we go to the bar in the hotel and we have the best time. And now it's like 2:00 in the morning. It's the middle of summer, It's a beautiful night out, and there's like lots of people there. And she says to me, let's go for a walk in the city.
B
I love this.
A
And I was like, wow.
B
Wow, I'm in.
A
So, see, but see, that's not what I was thinking.
B
Oh, really?
A
No, because this might be hard for you to believe. I'm really shy when it comes to this stuff.
B
Oh, interesting. I wouldn't see that.
A
Yeah, I'm very, like. I am very shy when it comes to this kind of stuff.
B
I think that's sweet.
A
And I think it's. Again, I think it has something to do with the fact of my father teaching me to be the gentleman, you know?
B
Yeah.
A
And so I. So we go for this walk for like two hours.
B
Wow.
A
And we. And she was staying in New York wasn't living in New York. And we get. I walk her back to her hotel and there's that moment.
B
Yeah, that fucking moment.
A
Okay, here's the moment. Okay. This is a girl that was definitely had on my radar, like in a. In a, In a fantasy world, not in a real world.
B
Yeah.
A
I didn't really know her that well.
B
But you knew who she was for a long time and. Yeah, okay.
A
Yes, exactly.
B
Yeah.
A
And here's the moment. And you know, it's 2:00 in the morning, We've had this lovely evening together, and I, I just looked at her, I was like, thank you so much. Have a great night. And she looked at me like, wow. And she went up. Okay. And my girlfriends, like friends who are women, have said to me literally since that day that they're like, you totally blew it.
B
Like, that was, that was your chance.
A
That was your chance. Now, now the question is, and the reason why I didn't make any moves is because I had just really kind of was like the first night we had done anything socially together, and I didn't want to. I didn't want to blow it, and I wanted. I didn't want to be that guy, which I love.
B
So I think there's two things.
A
Okay. I think I love that you're ready. You're ready for this.
B
Go. But did you follow up and ask her out later?
A
I did.
B
And what happened?
A
Okay, well, so the next morning we had breakfast together. Oh, well, like, we just met. It's like, for coffee.
B
Okay.
A
And then she. She asked me to. This is so weird. She asked me to go. Go to a party with her the next night. And then. And then she literally blew me off.
B
Like, ghosted you?
A
Like, not. I wouldn't say ghosted. That would be strong. But basically she was just like, it didn't happen.
B
Interesting.
A
So I don't know, like, did I.
B
Like, did you actually blow it in that moment? Yeah, I don't think so. Because I will say though, the couple of dates that I went on in the my, you know, post divorce era, in the last four and a half years, the two guys who did not try to kiss me, I did walk away from it being like, what the hell? One guy in particular, as he was dropping me off, asked me out again, but didn't make a move. So I knew he was interested, but I also was like, but why didn't he try? So I think it is confusing for a girl, but it's not. Like, I wouldn't be like, oh, he blew it. And not go out with him again. So that's interesting.
A
I don't know.
B
I don't know. The one that got away perhaps.
A
Well, maybe I just didn't have it.
B
You blew it at bis than I.
A
Didn'T have it anyway. Exactly. She's like, thank God he didn't try to kiss me. See, I have to come back every week because this is how I learn.
B
Okay, you can come back as often as you want. Okay, let's chat about skims, specifically about their bras. If you guys are like me, then I absolutely hate underwire bras. They are always the first thing I take off when I get home. That is ultimate freedom when you take that bra off. But I'm not going to lie to you guys. Skims is changing the game for me now. My bra is not the first thing that I take off. They are not only incredibly comfortable, but obviously I think most of us just feel more confident when we are wearing a bra. I have finally found the best bras and they're from skims. I'm obsessed with their fits. Everybody plunge bra. The cups of this bra have a really unique shape that makes it perfect for different necklines. That is huge. My uniform typically is jeans and a tank top, so this bra works perfectly under all of my low cut tops. Some bras would peek through, but this one doesn't and that is awesome. Okay, guys, definitely check it out. Shop skims bras@skims.com they're now available in 62 sizes, 30A all the way through 46H. If you haven't yet, be sure to let them know that I sent you. So after you place your order, select podcast in the survey and select my show. Let's be honest in the drop down menu that follows, let's talk about the farmer's dog. The farmer's dog makes real fresh dog food and delivers it right to your door. Recipes are developed by vet nutritionists, made from real meat and veggies and they're portioned just for your dog, making it easy to say goodbye to burnt brown balls and feed your dog real food with real benefits. Not only do my dogs just devour this food, but their coats are really shiny. Kona, my German shepherd, is 10 and she's definitely getting older, but she's in the best shape. Honestly, she can keep up with my other two and I really do credit the farmer's dog for that. It's smart, healthy pet food. You can feel good about feeding your pup. It's the best option for dogs of all life stages because it's not kibble, it's not canned goo. It's real healthy food. Traditional dry and wet dog food options are highly processed, they can use much lower quality ingredients than they claim to, and they're extremely difficult to portion accurately. A fresh diet's been found to have all sorts of benefits from healthier coat and skin, like I was just saying, to fresher breath, even better digestion and smaller, better poops. A healthy diet isn't just important for humans. We want to treat our dogs the same way we would our kids. You know, they are an extension of our family and to a lot of us, they are our kids. So we want to take good care of them the same way we would ourselves. Even get 50% off your first box of fresh, healthy food@the farmersdog.com honestly plus you get free shipping. That's why Rituals Symbiotic plus is designed with a delayed release capsule to help reach the colon, an ideal place for biotics to grow and thrive. You guys know I love probiotics. I swear by them. Happy squatting well, I want to know a couple other cringy things that girls have done on dates. Have there been, like, some real cringy moments that you're just like.
A
I mean, not really. I've actually had a pretty good dating life. I mean, dating life, that's so weird. I just. I actually like going out on dates.
B
Yeah, you seem like you would, like, I feel like I'm good on a date.
A
I like. Well, I like going out on dates because I like actually making plans and making sure that everything is set. Like, I would never, like, call somebody up and say, what do you want to do?
B
Oh, God, I love you for that so much.
A
The guy, where do you want to go?
B
I hate that. That's such a buzzkill. Just make a plan. Be a man and make a plan.
A
I, I, sometimes I'll, like, if it's a first date or something, I'll say, here's what I'm thinking. Are you into this? Because I, I can arrange for us to go here or do this if you're into that. If not, that's cool, too.
B
That's nice. Yeah.
A
But I think it's important to. I, I think it's important. I mean, you know, equality everywhere, of course. But I think for, like, the old school in me guy, I'm. I want to take care of. Taking care of, you know, making reservations.
B
I love that. That is lost, too. I feel like now guys don't do that anymore. I mean, not really. I think it's this generation. They just don't know how to just take charge and just plan a date.
A
Right.
B
Just do the damn thing. So what is a typical date for you?
A
Usually we go to lunch or dinner or something.
B
Are you picking them up? Like.
A
Okay, I'm into picking people up at their house.
B
Yeah. If, if that's something in your car or a driver.
A
Well, if I'm going out to dinner, I'm not driving.
B
Okay. Right. Because if you have a drink or what. Yeah, yeah.
A
You don't want to. You don't want to do that. So definitely not an Uber X.
B
A regular, A good car. Yeah, yeah.
A
No, but, like, you know, it's, It's. I think that kind of stuff is really, really important. I think, like, it's. At some point, if the person you're dating is, like, you know, you're being too formal with me. I get it. But I'd rather step it back as opposed to doing the opposite.
B
Yeah, I agree.
A
I mean, I will tell you, like, I've had. I like, As I said, I like dating, so I like the act of, like, creating the date and having the date and all that. But there was one time where I made all these plans and then the person I went out with was just like, no, we're not going there. I've made different. I've made different plans. And who are we gonna go? Here and here?
B
Yeah, you told me this story. I mean, God, just completely kills. That's a bummer.
A
Well, I mean, listen, it happens.
B
It happens.
A
Just, it just, it's. And I. And also, like, if you go. I think I feel like if you go on a date and it's not a great date, it's okay.
B
Yeah, right.
A
It's not the end of the world.
B
That's true. Yeah.
A
You know, and maybe you become friends with the person.
B
Yeah, that is true.
A
You know.
B
Does that happen to you a lot? Yeah, I feel like that never happens to me.
A
No, it happens. Like I'm. I'm pretty friendly with most of the.
B
People that I've gone on a date with.
A
Yeah.
B
That's nice. I would imagine that when you take girls to dinner, obviously all of these chefs and restaurants know who you are. Is it just like a Bobby?
A
Well, that's the other thing you don't want to do. Do that too much because then it looks like you're showing off and stuff like that. So, like, I like, especially like on a first date, I like a low key play.
B
Okay. Right.
A
Low key place. And like, you're not trying to like show all of your, all of your.
B
Strut, put everything out on the table like that. I know. I agree with you. Okay. I want to talk about.
A
You have notes.
B
I know. I've got. I prepare, I prep this stuff. I take this seriously. Okay. So being back on the dating scene in the last four years, a big thing for girls is when you are dating someone, you cook for a man for the first time. Okay.
A
Really? Yeah.
B
Like, anytime I've cooked for a guy for the first time, I'm calling multiple friends. I'm being like, what do you think about this? Should I do this? Because kind of what you're saying, you want to make a great meal, but you don't want it to seem like you tried so hard. Right. And you go over the top. So what is a foolproof dinner that girls can be making guys for the first time, they cook for them.
A
Chicken Milanese.
B
Okay.
A
That to me, that's one of my favorite things to eat and to cook. You know, it's like, it's got the best of both worlds. It's got crispiness, it has healthiness, it's easy to make. You probably Won't overcook it, hopefully.
B
Yeah.
A
But look, it's a breaded chicken cutlet. You know, you have to know how to do that. You have to saute in the pan, and then, like, during the summer, like, lots of tomatoes, arugula, some parmesan cheese, olive oil, vinegar. Boom, you're done.
B
Okay, great.
A
So you basically have a salad on top of this crispy chicken dish, and I think. I think that's a beautiful dish.
B
Okay. Yum. That's great. I always go for steak, but I'm. I'm into that.
A
You are a very good eater.
B
I am a good eater.
A
I noticed. I noticed when we went to dinner, we were at Husk.
B
Yeah.
A
Which I know you like to take a lot of people to.
B
I took you to my date spot. Well, this isn't a date, Bobby, but I'm taking you to my date spot.
A
Well, I gave you a list of places.
B
Yeah. And that was on there.
A
Yeah. You're like, let's go to Husk. I was like, okay. Just one of the dozens, right? Exactly.
B
I took probably four or five guys there.
A
Really?
B
Five? Yeah.
A
Steph really knows you very well there. Here comes another one. Oh, no. They put me on that list.
B
You're on that list.
A
I can promise you. Right now, there's a. In the kitchen, when you open the doors, only the staff can see. There's a list of all of Casey's.
B
They're all just crossed.
A
Exactly.
B
All the guys.
A
I'm there. Bobby Flay. Gone.
B
You're on there.
A
Exactly.
B
Oh, my God. But, yeah, Husk was great. Did you like it?
A
Loved it.
B
I mean, it's like an iconic restaurant, I think, for Nashville. And I think their other one, their first one was Charleston. I can't remember now. Yeah, yeah.
A
But Husk is very good.
B
But, yeah, I like to eat. People don't think that about me.
A
But you eat everything.
B
I do.
A
Like you. You know, the stereotypical, like, you know, hot girl meal. Right. It's like, we eat salads. You know, it's like. Which is crazy, but there was something on the menu.
B
The fried pig's ears.
A
Yes, exactly. You were like, having that right away.
B
They're my favorite. I was like, okay, I'm an adventurous eater.
A
Yes.
B
I'll try just about anything. Yeah. Okay. Flip side is, what do you cook to impress a girl for the first time? Do you feel like you have to go all out since you are a chef?
A
All out? No.
B
Okay.
A
Like, in other words, I. When I cook at home, the food is incredibly simple.
B
Okay.
A
And. And it's like I'm not there in my chef coat, like with tweezers putting on micro greens.
B
I would love to do that. First time you're cooking for a girl. Could you imagine?
A
Yes. Actually, you know what? That's a good idea. Oh my God, Please do that.
B
And then come back and we'll talk about.
A
Yeah, she left right away.
B
Yeah, she got out of there so fast.
A
No, but it's usually like, I usually like, makes like, makes like fresh pasta. Like, I'll make the noodles and like, I'll do something like very seasonal.
B
Nice.
A
So like again, like if it's in the middle of summer, like, just like a cherry tomato sauce with some garlic, some parmesan cheese, olive oil, maybe some Calabria chilies. Really simple things like that. Like, and just, just so, like they like so, you know, so it's a handcrafted dish, but it's something like that. Everybody's gonna want to eat.
B
What if a girl doesn't eat gluten?
A
Well, I'll know that.
B
Get out.
A
No, no, I'll make something else.
B
Gluten free.
A
Yeah, exactly.
B
Do you make gluten free pasta?
A
No, I wouldn't make. Oh, no, I wouldn't make pasta.
B
Jumping chip.
A
No, I would. I wouldn't make pasta. I would. I would make something that was not. Not good.
B
Okay, so you're asking before. Hey, do you have any food intolerance?
A
Always.
B
Yeah. Okay.
A
I always ask. Yeah, any food allergies or aversions?
B
Okay, just tell me. Okay. Yeah, Okay, I like that. Interesting. Yeah.
A
Because listen, I. We do that in the restaurant. Yeah, you have every table. If somebody has a. Some. Something that they have to deal with.
B
Yeah, exactly. Well, as busy as you are, do you see yourself slowing down anytime soon? Like, what. When are you going to retire? Do you ever think about it? What is the next 10 years like for you?
A
Discovery. I mean, I. You know, this book is called Chapter one.
B
Yeah.
A
You know, everybody keeps asking me already, like, what's chapter two? It's probably going to be my adventures in. In Italy, which is the place that I really love more than anything else. I invited you to come to the Amalfi coast with us, and you were like, I'm going to Greece.
B
Well, Shay, so here's the thing about me. Everything is planned out. I'm very scheduled. I can't just do last minute. If you want me to go to Italy, you need to book me a few months in Italy. I was also trying to get to the Hamptons too. I know, I know.
A
Listen, we have the best time. I cook three meals a day.
B
That's why I'm coming.
A
Just to eat. Okay, we got you.
B
Next time. I'm coming, I'm coming. I mean, we'll do that.
A
We'll book you for next summer. Great.
B
Yeah, exactly. Lock me in.
A
Now you're locked in.
B
Great.
A
Okay. Your room is safe.
B
I appreciate that.
A
Okay.
B
I'm bringing my Gusbin Justin.
A
Okay, no problem.
B
You're gonna love him.
A
Yeah.
B
Yeah. Great. Okay. Okay, great. I don't even know what we were talking about. Oh, no, you're. The next 10 years for you now.
A
The next 10 years. I mean, probably a lot more of the same. I mean, you know, I've been at the food network for 30 something years.
B
Yeah. And you've got a great schedule with that. I mean, you can knock out a show in a short way.
A
Well, I have my own production company, so we. We schedule it the way we want. I'm a. I'm a beast when it comes to work. Like, I. Work ethic, to me is the most important thing. Thankfully, my daughter has the same thing.
B
Yeah.
A
And so. So I'll do like 26 or 36 episodes of Beat Bobby Flay in a row.
B
It's amazing. And like. And how many?
A
Well, we do two a day.
B
Okay.
A
You did the show a bunch of times.
B
I did. I did the show a long time ago.
A
I want to have you back.
B
I know. I was trying to make it work this fall.
A
That's right.
B
You almost came. I almost came. I know. Yeah.
A
I got a.
B
That was a last minute thing. We got to book it now. Bobby, I'm booked through March right now.
A
Are you really?
B
I really am. Well, I've got a little opening here in December.
A
Dagny, make sure she's on the books. Okay.
B
But you know what? When your kids are little. Because the thing is, I have my kids.
A
How old are they?
B
So 12, 10 and almost nine. So, you know, it's like, I can't. My time is limited. But I'm coming to the Hamptons.
A
All right. We'll book you.
B
Great.
A
For sure.
B
Okay. So you're not slowing down.
A
Anyway, so Italy is like, not just the Amalfi coast, but Italy itself is like, like very special to me. There was a moment in time where after I had gotten divorced, I had been divorced for a few years and I was just like, I'm just not feeling. I need to recharge myself. And I literally took my cat and went to Rome for six weeks. And I lived like a local in Rome for six weeks. I took language every single day for three hours. I ran the Tiber river every morning. I'm a runner. That's what I do for cardio. And then I. I lived my best life. I was going to lunch and dinner every single day. I literally lost five pounds doing it. I believe it happens.
B
It's because the quality of food is how it crosses. Exactly.
A
But I really love the lifestyle and the people and obviously the food and the culture of Italy and all of it. So I think if, you know, I think I'm going to spend as much time as I can over there as well.
B
That's amazing.
A
I just love Europe.
B
It's the best. I agree. Italy. Rome is actually my favorite.
A
Out of everywhere I've been, Italy, people don't know this. You've never been to Paris?
B
I've never been to Paris.
A
I know.
B
I know. I've been saving it.
A
I went to Paris with Sophie for the Olympics.
B
Your daughter? Yeah. Yeah. I want to ask you about Sophie because, you know, you guys are very close.
A
Very.
B
And she's 28, and, you know, the. The time that we've been able to spend together. I can just tell what a great relationship you guys have together. And so I'm curious what your best parenting advice is. How have you guys been able to have such a great relationship? It's a.
A
That's a great question. I don't have all the answers. I can promise you that. First of all, I. I have a great kid. Every parent will say that. I got blessed with a kid who, like, she makes it easy for me to parent.
B
Yeah.
A
Okay. So one of the things about. So Sophie's mom is great mom, and she's really strict. I'm less strict than her mom is. And so we make a very, very good team.
B
Yeah.
A
She is, like, always, like, I don't want her, like, when she was a kid, I don't want her to do this and this and this. And I was like, let her do it. If she runs a red light, it's fine. It's called life.
B
Yeah.
A
Right. And you have to learn through things. So the balance of us, the two of us, I think was really helpful to her. I've only had to have about five conversations, what I call life conversations with Sophie where she did something where I was like, that. You cannot do that. You can't say that. You can't. You can't operate that way. You can't be.
B
And is this as an adult or even, like, teen years? Okay.
A
Both.
B
Yeah.
A
And the one thing about her is that I only have to have that particular conversation once.
B
I love that.
A
And she snaps out of it, and she's like, got it. And she moves on, and she. She learns from it. And sometimes she's not happy about it. Of course.
B
Yeah.
A
But. And she moves on, and she. And she makes herself a better person for it.
B
Yeah.
A
So I think letting kids live their life is really important. Letting them make some mistakes. Hopefully they're not big mistakes, and that's the risk. And also, we talk about anything and everything. We have a very open conversational relationship, and so we're able to talk to each other about everything. I mean, trust me. She talks to me about my dating life all the time. She gives me the thumbs up and thumbs down. I love that all the time. I love it.
B
Have you ever dated someone she didn't like?
A
I've dated people that she wasn't very happy about.
B
Okay. Yeah.
A
But you know. And she tells me.
B
Yeah.
A
You know, And I love that. Yeah. That doesn't mean I'm not gonna date the person.
B
Yeah. I was just gonna ask. Did you continue to date them?
A
But I will tell you that. That when I do date somebody, they're like, I hope Sophie likes me.
B
Yeah, I love that. Good.
A
But she's. But Sophie's amazing because she's incredibly inclusive. It's one of the. It's one of my favorite words to use with her because she's not a mean girl, you know? And she's. She's not. She's not like, okay, I, I, I. I can do this. I can do that. And you can't ever. Yeah, she's very inclusive with everybody around her. And she makes. And also she makes sure that I'm the same way. So she'll be like, don't talk about that. If somebody's not gonna participate in that, don't make them feel bad. Like, she always. She's amazing. She's amazing that way.
B
That's awesome.
A
And she has her own career, and she's off the payroll.
B
I know.
A
Yeah.
B
Hell, yeah. Yay. That's when you know you've made it.
A
Exactly.
B
But it's true. Someone. I recently saw this quote that they said, if your kids want to hang out with you when they're adults, that's how you. That's a successful relationship.
A
On my way over here, I told her I was coming to see you. She was, like, so excited about that. She's a huge fan of yours.
B
I love it.
A
And she's like, can we hang out by your pool tomorrow? I was like, sure.
B
Oh, see, I love that.
A
I know.
B
Makes me so happy. Okay, last thing. Will you play a game with me?
A
Sure.
B
Okay. This is fun.
A
I guess so.
B
You have to. You don't have a choice.
A
All right?
B
This is called hot or not. So I'm gonna give you.
A
Oh, God.
B
I'm gonna give you situations with a girl, and I just want you to tell me if you think this is hot or not. Okay. Buckle up. No, it's not bad. Okay. She makes you dinner and it's honestly just not good. But she did try hot. Hot. Okay. You can tell she's already been drinking when you pick her up for a date.
A
Depends.
B
How much drinking.
A
I mean you. I mean a drink. Yes. Okay. 30 drinks.
B
No slurring our words. Maybe not so much. Okay. I think you kind of answered this earlier, but she insists on planning the first date and does everything. It's all a surprise for you.
A
So she planned everything.
B
She's planning everything.
A
Do you like that? Yes. Because. Because for the most part, I'm going to be doing it all the time.
B
Okay.
A
And if some. If there's a special occasion that she wants to do it. Absolutely.
B
Okay. Okay. Okay. She makes you chase her a little in the beginning.
A
Definitely hot, I think. Yeah, I think it's hot. For sure.
B
She's also a chef.
A
Yeah, that could be definitely hot. My first wife was a chef.
B
Oh, okay. Is that how you guys met?
A
Yes, we met through the business.
B
Oh, okay. Interesting. Okay. She has a two year old.
A
Well, I will tell you this. If she's a great mom, it's hot.
B
Okay. Oh, that's a good answer.
A
I love. I love that. I think that. I think that moms who are great parents. Yeah, I think that's a hot.
B
It is. That's a very hot. Okay.
A
Yeah, because it shows, like, it shows caring and adoration and thinking about other people.
B
Yeah, no, you're right. All right. Amazing. You passed.
A
I did. You passed.65%. Yeah. It's like school.
B
Good job.
A
Thank God.
B
You're amazing. I really appreciate you being here. And then tell everyone where they can find you. And. And also the book.
A
Okay, so Bobby Flay, chapter one. Thank you so much for talking about my book. But, I mean, you can buy it, you know, Amazon, all the places you can buy books. And where can you find me? I don't know.
B
Instagram. Bobby Flay.
A
Yes. Thank you.
B
You're on TikTok, right?
A
Yeah. You don't want to promote that. It's not that I am on TikTok. I'm just not I just don't feel like I'm that good at it, you know? You're really good at it.
B
I don't know. I've lost my zhuzh, but.
A
But the other thing I wanted to say to you was I love watching you cook when you. When you post stuff.
B
Oh, thank you. I've been so fun lazy lately, but I'm gonna. Yeah, well, no, I've been cooking. I just haven't been posting as much. I've had this love hate relationship with social media lately, but I'm gonna get back into it.
A
So at some point, I'm gonna come to Nashville. I'm gonna teach you five dishes to have in your repertoire.
B
I would. Honestly, I would love simple things to feed your family. I would love that. I feel like you could also just teach me a lot of different skills also. How do you sharpen knives? I can't sharpen my goddamn knives to save my life.
A
Hire somebody.
B
I know. That's what I know.
A
I mean, I do. I mean, I. I get somebody to sharpen my knives professionally about once a. A year.
B
I know you have to because. Well, I've heard, too. A dull knife is actually one of the most dangerous things. Very dangerous.
A
Because it doesn't go where you want it to.
B
Yeah. All right. Well, I appreciate you.
A
Anytime.
B
Thank you so much. Yeah. I call the power.
