Liv Perez
Oh my God, I'm so glad we're finally making it happen.
Nikki Campbell
I know. Especially in our hometown.
Liv Perez
I know because we're always in the same city.
Nikki Campbell
But it' no, because usually when we are in the same city, it's like a fashion week or a function. Everyone's running around. It's complete chaos. I see you from the corner of the room. I can't make my way to the corner of that room, but I want to.
Liv Perez
That is true.
Nikki Campbell
And so now I'm so happy I get you in the corner of my room.
Liv Perez
Oh my God, I'm so happy to be in your room. It's very beautiful here actually. Thank you. And I expect nothing less from you.
Nikki Campbell
Thanks. I always like, it's nice when people come over from New York and I'm like, Ah, L.A. life.
Liv Perez
I'm so, like, I might be so miserable there. And every time I come to la, I'm like, why am I doing this to myself?
Nikki Campbell
You know, I think it's a trade off. Like, I love New York for work, I love going for business. I get my shit done.
Liv Perez
Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
And like, I think for where you're at right now, like, you gotta be in the city, you gotta be in the heart of it all.
Liv Perez
I guess you're right.
Nikki Campbell
But you've always loved New York.
Liv Perez
I do.
Nikki Campbell
Like, you've always kind of been.
Liv Perez
I've always, I've always loved it and it's been. But it has been 10 years now, officially.
Nikki Campbell
Oh my goodness. Did you move after college?
Liv Perez
I did, yeah. No, I moved during college. Cause I went to Parsons.
Nikki Campbell
Okay, so you went.
Liv Perez
So I was like in. Yes, that includes college years, which maybe.
Nikki Campbell
No, those count.
Liv Perez
Do those count?
Nikki Campbell
I actually think those count more than adult years in college. I mean adult years out of college.
Liv Perez
Oh, I like that take. I like that take.
Nikki Campbell
Chaos. What do you mean?
Liv Perez
I know. It really is chaos to dump an.
Nikki Campbell
18 year old in New York City with zero life experience. I didn't even, I didn't know how to do shit. I used to live on the west side of Washington Square park and wear my little heels to class on the other side of the park.
Liv Perez
That's exactly what I see for you, by the way.
Nikki Campbell
Thank you. And while I was doing it, I was like, Blair Waldorf would be doing this.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
It was not right.
Liv Perez
And she, she would have, she would have.
Nikki Campbell
But like I was 18 year old me figuring out my shit and it was not right.
Liv Perez
Yeah, no, it was, it was. I went through a lot in those four years. They really aged me in a deep way.
Nikki Campbell
Do you like going to college in New York?
Liv Perez
I did love going to college. I mean, there really would have been no other option for me. You know, I really. Here from here. Yeah. There was no other. I don't know what I would have done if I did not go to Parsons. I literally only applied there. Oh, wow. Like, if it works, you know, if it doesn't work, I don't know what's gonna happen. But you know, it ended up working out.
Nikki Campbell
Did you know you always wanted to be in fashion. Parsons was like, it a little.
Liv Perez
No, but when I knew. When I knew, I knew it's always kind of been, like, the way that I am. When I know, I know. Even if it's like, a little bit later than expected. My mom always said, like, you didn't really, like, crawl that much. You just kind of, like, got up and started walking, but you were, like, really late to start doing that. Once you did it, like, you just did it. I feel that's, like, kind of how I am.
Nikki Campbell
I love that.
Liv Perez
I just. Yeah. Yeah. I knew I was probably in, like, high school, and I did, like, a whole, like, 360. I decided, like, that day, I was like, I need to go, Parsons. I want to work in fashion. I'm moving to New York, and my parents are like, okay. That's kind of how it was.
Nikki Campbell
Yeah.
Liv Perez
It was just like, that was. That was the only option, and it had to go that way. And then when, you know.
Nikki Campbell
You know, while I do think that there's, like, a bustling industry in LA that's growing, it's not as. It's nowhere near as impactful as New York.
Liv Perez
Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
I do think if you want to be in fashion, finding a way to go to college in New York is such a great way to get your foot in the door.
Liv Perez
Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
Because by the time I had left college, I had interned for so many different people or had met so many different people, I had at least been able to, like, set up at least a meeting with a brand I wanted to work with down the line.
Liv Perez
Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
Like, it helps you really kind of get your foot in the door, versus someone who is, like, green to New York, has never taken the subway before.
Liv Perez
Oh, my God.
Nikki Campbell
They're more like a custom. You're more likely to get hired if they're like, okay, you know what you're doing here?
Liv Perez
100%. Like, you've been here 100%. You've been there. You've, like, get to dip your toes in the industry. I was always doing that, too. I was like, always. The second I got to Newark, I was like, how do I start working?
Nikki Campbell
Yeah.
Liv Perez
And, like, doing the whole. I did, like, every internship under the sun, and then it just kind of, like, makes you. By the time you, like, graduate and you're, like, working in the industry, you're, like, kind of been here. I kind of know you guys.
Nikki Campbell
Oh, I was ready.
Liv Perez
Yeah, you're ready. You know, and then it's fun, too. Cause all your classmates are kind of doing the same Thing like, they all kind of like all start working in the industry in different ways too. And then you kind of collaborate and it just makes it easy and nice.
Nikki Campbell
Where did you intern?
Liv Perez
I interned. Oh, God. Let me think. Let me go through the list. I interned for bpcm. Love. Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
You gotta do a PR firm here in the house.
Liv Perez
You gotta do a PR firm.
Nikki Campbell
You have to. It'll be the worst but the best.
Liv Perez
Yes. That was an intense one. I worked for Style. I worked for Mellottenburg. That was like an intense one. I worked for a few smaller brands and then I. Yeah, and then I started working with Thom Brown. And then I went to Vogue, and then I went to cfda. And then, you know, and then you.
Nikki Campbell
Had the perfect launch pad for literally anything you wanted to do.
Liv Perez
Then it. Yeah, then it went very well. I know. I'm like. I did so many. I just like, I'm remembering now how many things I.
Nikki Campbell
Did you get bit by the bug. Yeah, I really did. Sounds like you did too.
Liv Perez
I did. I did. You know, and then it's like one job kind of like leads to the next or there would be like a fashion week gig that you would just take and I would work for them for a season and stuff like that. It was like, it was always kind of bopping around, whatever I could get my hands on.
Nikki Campbell
How'd you meet Thom Brown? What was it like?
Liv Perez
Oh, my God. Insane. Insane. It was really cool when I joined the company because they had, like, they were totally undergoing this whole, like, restructuring. They had like this whole plan for, like, world domination. And it was like, really. No, it literally, it really did work. You know, they had like a real five year aggressive plan to be like a serious, big, incredible. So I kind of got to like, witness a lot of the happening. It was a really small team. It was like me and like three other people. Everything was kind of like always a mess, but we kind of just like built. And I was with them when they. When they did our first show in Paris.
Nikki Campbell
Wow.
Liv Perez
Yeah. And I literally cried. It's insane. It's like a total, like, out of body experience, you know, Especially someone like a Tom, where it's like, it's a proper show. Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
It's theatrical.
Liv Perez
Yeah, it's the theatrical element to it. It was beautiful. I remember being like, backstage. I was working so hard and the whole week was crazy. My boss came up to me and she was like, stop working. Go out and like, the show's about to start. Like, just take it all in.
Nikki Campbell
Yeah.
Liv Perez
And I went and I was just like. It was. That collection was inspired by the Little Mermaid, which was, like, my favorite movie ever.
Nikki Campbell
Oh, my God.
Liv Perez
And it was just like, a whole thing. And I was like, wait, what am I doing in Paris with Thom Browne at Fashion Week? This is so cool. And I was like, you know, 21, 20. Like, I was so young, and it was, like, such a surreal experience. And I thought I was, like, sobbing in the audience.
Nikki Campbell
Oh, that's beautiful.
Liv Perez
Yeah, it was cool.
Nikki Campbell
I love that. Well, we met when we were very young.
Liv Perez
We did meet when we were very young.
Nikki Campbell
Yeah. I think I maybe was 23. I met you just out of. Fresh out of college.
Liv Perez
Really?
Nikki Campbell
Because you were at the CFDA's fresh out of college. I was, right.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
Yeah. That's when we met.
Liv Perez
Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
We did that snowy New York fashion.
Liv Perez
I remember that. Yes.
Nikki Campbell
I was wearing a Sax Pots blue parka.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
And we had found this, like, very chic transparent umbrella in my apartment that I never used. It was pouring snow.
Liv Perez
It was pouring.
Nikki Campbell
I was living on Mulberry in Houston, and you were like, let's shoot this, like, little, like, thing for Fashion Week.
Liv Perez
Yep.
Nikki Campbell
And the shots were pretty great.
Liv Perez
They were really good. Wait, you have a really amazing memory.
Nikki Campbell
How do you not remember that?
Liv Perez
Well, I do remember that.
Nikki Campbell
You do a lot of those, though.
Liv Perez
As it's coming, you know, now it's coming back together. Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
That's how we met, though.
Liv Perez
Yes, I remember. That is how we met. Yeah. That was fun. Let's do it again.
Nikki Campbell
Anytime. We are doing it right now. But the opposite.
Liv Perez
Yes, exactly. I know. Wow. Look how far we've come.
Nikki Campbell
As I was saying, going to college in New York, you really. It comes full circle in a lot of different ways.
Liv Perez
Yeah. Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
I met so many people so young that, like, it's. I. I either I supported or they supported me back. And. Yeah, it's like a full circle thing. New York is amazing that way. I'm actually curious for all of you talking about all these, like, experiences that you have, like Vogue, cfga, Tom Brown, do you think that. And I, like, could think now, like, back to the early days of Instagram, like, you could have maybe been doing what you're doing now on Instagram 10 years ago, but it wouldn't have hit the way it does now because of, I think, the experience and credibility that you have.
Liv Perez
100%. Yeah, 100%. I love that when people can, like, see that and recognize that too. Cause that's something that feels very important to me, is like, I'm not Just like, someone who's random coming on the Internet and, like, you know, talking about people's outfits for no reason or with no, like, kind of backing. Right. And I think that's when it, you know, can kind of reach, like, a weird kind of. It hits differently. And so I think it really does. And I don't think I would be able to do what I do now without that knowledge of just, like, how everything works. Right. Like, how even. Just, like, you know, how brands have to work with stylists and the teams that are involved and the prep that goes into everything and, like, the behind the scenes of how looks come together and make it onto the red carpet. Yeah, I don't think I would be able to do it if I didn't have that kind of, like, background. So it does kind of feel like it all needed to happen for me to get to where I am now.
Nikki Campbell
How did you know it was the right time to start doing it?
Liv Perez
That's a really good question. Honestly, I think it's because I was at a point in my career where I was a little bit. I felt like, a little bit stuck. I was kind of, like, at this point where I was like, okay, I like what I'm doing. I'm doing good, like, on paper, but I just feel like there's maybe something else. Like, there's maybe, like, how do I take it to the next level? I was having sort of that, like, quarter life crisis of, like, okay, what is the rest of my. Is this it? Can I do more? Like, where do I go from here? And I was kind of at a place with my job. I wasn't super happy. I was kind of transitioning to something new. I was looking for, like, the next thing in my career. And I just kind of, on a whim, sort of just, like, made this video online, and then it kind of hit immediately. And then I sort of felt like, okay, maybe there's something here. And so I just kind of, like, kept. I made, like, little commitments. I was like, just, okay, do it for a month and then see what happens. And then that turned to, like, three months, and then that turned to six months. And now, you know, it's been a. It's been a year, and it's kind of, like, taken me to very wild places.
Nikki Campbell
I really like that approach to content because I do think, you know, through this pod, I've had a lot of conversations on Instagram with people who I don't know, but really want to be in content creation and fashion, and a lot of the Times it feels like this really overwhelming, daunting thing that they need to start creating content every day. And it's like eight posts a day. And how do you create the most content? But I liked that you were like, let's just try this out for a month. Let's see if this hits. I don't need to create eight videos to get someone's attention. Maybe it's one really good one that gets me to the next place.
Liv Perez
Yeah. 100%. You have to. You have to love it. And I always say, like, you cannot chase. I think a lot of people chase virality.
Nikki Campbell
Yes.
Liv Perez
And that is a. That will. That puts you in a really hard place because you're not actually really building if, you know, if you're like. They just have this mindset of, like, oh, well, I want to, like, just create things that blow up, that are getting a lot of views and a lot of traction, but they're not necessarily thinking, like, what's my brand? What industry am I speaking to? Who's my audience? How am I building all of those things? And so if you're. If you're chasing, like, every trend, like, you'll never get there. And if you're creating. Creating at that level and kind of, like, having that output, you're gonna burn out.
Nikki Campbell
I mean, I think about all the things that I see now that are sent to me that are viral. I don't actually know the creator behind them. Yeah, like, virality is a flash in the pan.
Liv Perez
Yep.
Nikki Campbell
And it's like what you do afterwards with that of, like, how you get. Bring people back and, like, actually create that community and brand is everything.
Liv Perez
Yes. You have to. You have to. And that was also why I kind of, like, knew, even within my kind of, like, realm, like, obviously, I'm doing fashion stuff, and I was doing kind of, like, very, you know, red carpet stuff. And I'm not the only fashion creator. I'm not the only red carpet commentator. But I sort of felt like, okay, how can I create, like, this one thing that's distinct? So even if I do pop up in your for you page, it's always kind of like the same format. And so it just. There's like a, you know, repetition that allows people to, like you, me, to actually build the audience. And I think that's why it's kind of like, it's been successful, because it's. It's. It's something that's, like, distinct, and it's unique, and it's, like, instantly identifiable, and people kind of feel like they Know me and they want to follow along. So it's, it's not just like, I've never chased like a trend. I'm not doing like, the dances. I'm not leaning into the audios that much. I'm just kind of doing my own thing and also trying to do it at my own pace. And that really let it happen a little bit more organically.
Nikki Campbell
That instantly identifiable thing is everything to me. Like, being able to, you know, have that come up on my feed and be like, oh, my favorite show's on. Like, that stuff I think is really important. And those are the creators that I love the most.
Liv Perez
Yeah, totally.
Nikki Campbell
What was it like? I would, I would love to be a fly on the wall in the room when, like, you first did the first lazy review. Like, were you just like, I do not want to, like, look nice right now or like, I'm just not, like, I'm just gonna do this fast. What was. How did that concept come together? And by the way, you always look good, but you know what I mean? Like, we get like dressed up for content. You know what I mean? Like, this is literally like you in a hoodie half the time. Like, and I think that's why I also love it because it's like, this is you stripped down. It's honest. Like, if you're showing up honestly, I can trust you for also being honest in like, what you're about to say.
Liv Perez
Oh, I love that. That was. Yes. Well, it really, that's just me. I mean, and I think part of that comes from the fact that, like, it's that classic thing of like, fashion is all about the smoke and mirrors. It's not glamorous when you're working in it. And so, like, I still had a full time job. I was doing everything. I was always running around. My schedule was always crazy. And when I'm home, I'm like, I'm just a. Like, I'm just like, I'm in a T shirt and sweatpants and I'm just like chilling and I'm easy and, you know, whatever. And so the laziness kind of came through like that sort of just like, I'm actually not like, the fashion and the industry and the work seems glamorous, but like me, myself, I'm a lot more casual and laid back than I think, like, most people would think. And so it just kind of, it just kind of happened because that was just. It just felt organic to me. I knew I was like, never. And I don't think I really will probably be A creator that's, like, as refined and always have to get, that's just not me. I'm usually a mess. I'm always running around my head chopped off.
Nikki Campbell
I wonder for you, why do you think the lazy review specifically hits? What is it about that that you're just like, oh, it's so different than any other content that we're seeing out there?
Liv Perez
I think it's because it's more. It's easier for the general person to understand.
Nikki Campbell
Fashion is for the masses.
Liv Perez
Fashion is for the masses. And there's a lot of people that feel really excluded by it and uncomfortable by it. And I get a lot of comments that I think are really nice. It's like, I know nothing about fashion, but I really enjoy watching this.
Nikki Campbell
Yes, I love this.
Liv Perez
I love that. That's, like, the biggest compliment to me. And I think a lot of the times when you see a lot of these other creators who I think are great, like, they kind of do these, like, deep dives on, you know, like.
Nikki Campbell
The history and the history, you know.
Liv Perez
What they're wearing, how the construction is going, and, you know, these. It's like most people don't know and they don't honestly really care. They just have that gut instinct when they see somebody. They're like, oh, I like that, or I don't like that.
Nikki Campbell
Right.
Liv Perez
And sometimes it's kind of not more deep than that. You know, it's either kind of good or it's bad. And I think I kind of wanted to do, like, a little bit more of, like, something that was casual and approachable and just felt, like, funny. Like, people can engage with that in a different way than they can when someone's doing, like, a really intense deep dive on, like, one specific look.
Nikki Campbell
A hundred percent.
Liv Perez
Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
I actually heard something recently that I loved, and it was on a podcast, and the host was saying, your Instagram is not for your friends.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
It's for your ambition and whatever business, like, needs you want to fulfill. It's for the other people that, like, you want to bring into your world. And I think about that all the time of, like, for you specifically. Like, there are so many people that watch your videos that have no idea what's going on, but they're excited to engage in it.
Liv Perez
Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
There's a huge void, which we all know in red carpet commentary right now. Like, I feel like so much is missing.
Liv Perez
Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
What do you think this, like, next era is looking like for me? It includes you, but, like, things are changing so much right now. And, like, what do you think what shake up needs to happen right now to make red carpet work?
Liv Perez
It needs to be more honest. I mean, it does. It needs to be more authentic. And I think that there's this kind of. I think people are really scared to criticize anything nowadays, and so they don't. They just. Everybody kind of, like, fawns over everyone and everything. And I. And I think that there is a way to have conversations with somebody that's, like, critical and it's honest and it's open about style and what they're wearing and what's happening that doesn't. That can be. You know, you don't have to. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you can't have, like, a rapport or, like, a relationship with somebody.
Nikki Campbell
Right.
Liv Perez
You know, like, that's. I think about my videos the same way I think about, like, when I watch the Red Cars with my friends or when you go to, like, a movie with your friends. Like, you don't agree with everybody in your circle about everything that you see or you watch or you, you know, listen to, like, people have disagreements, but you can still have a relationship with them. And so I think, like, moving forward, I think that there's more room to kind of be playful and engage with celebrities and the red carpet and style in a way that isn't so entirely based around flattery.
Nikki Campbell
I mean, your Instagram literally says, like, Joan Rivers of. What does it say?
Liv Perez
I think it says. I think it says fashion police.
Nikki Campbell
It used to say Joan Rivers.
Liv Perez
It did say. But it has. I have my. My image. My. My profile photos.
Nikki Campbell
Is Joan Rivers. Is Joan Rivers iconic?
Liv Perez
Iconic. Iconic.
Nikki Campbell
I. I mean, look, I think there was a point in time where it was mean.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
And I think there's a very big difference between critique and criticism.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
Like, I think there's a very stark difference between being able to, like, give constructive feedback on something and just being plain mean.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
And sometimes I think of Joan Rivers and I'm like, look, she was a comedian.
Liv Perez
Like, yes.
Nikki Campbell
That was her entry point into everyone's homes was, like, trying to be funny and making a joke out of it. But I am really kind of itching for stronger fashion commentary on the silver screen again. Even now, when I'm watching the Oscars, I'm kind of flipping through numerous different channels, kind of trying to find the good bits, but I really think it lost its way.
Liv Perez
It has lost its way a little bit. I think people feel that. And a lot of people say that, you know, and I do Think Joan specifically. I mean, icon. I think she was. I think you're right. Like, she was very. I think she would consider herself a comedian first and then fashion second. And I think that's maybe the difference between her and I, also, the way that we speak, but also the fact that I'm probably a little bit more of a fashion girl first. And then the comedy is, like, just something that kind of weaves its way into it, I think, a little bit more naturally. But, yeah, I want. I think, people, we need to spice it up a little bit. We need to spice up the commentary and the coverage a little bit more, because I think audiences are just not really relating to it honestly.
Nikki Campbell
Right. I mean, look, if you can be at the SAG Awards and have literally every single celebrity come up to you warmly.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
And, like, want your approval.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
Like, I even remember. I can't believe her name is escaping me. She's in. Nobody wants.
Liv Perez
This starts with J. Justine.
Nikki Campbell
Justine. Like, if. Justine.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
Thank you. That was, like, searching out of my brain. If Justine Loop can come up to you and be like, I wanted to see if you liked it. Like, I was waiting for your review. Like, I think that that is, like, a totally new era of fashion criticism.
Liv Perez
Yeah. You know, it's amazing. And one thing I think that I have been. I've been really surprised by. Cause that wasn't something I expected, is that the people. The celebrities and the people that I am, you know, roasting have a sense of humor, and they seem to like it. You know, when I was at the SAGs, having someone. Justine, come up and be like, it's okay if you don't like it, you know, and, like, you roast me when you have to. It's fine.
Nikki Campbell
Yeah.
Liv Perez
You can have a dialogue with people and not agree with everything that they do. And people are engaging with and they think it's funny. And, you know, not saying everyone will think it's funny and not saying everyone will engage with it, but I think in general, you know, it's okay to critique something.
Nikki Campbell
You're giving us fashion people hope.
Liv Perez
I hope so.
Nikki Campbell
For real. Like, I'm like, bring it back, please.
Liv Perez
We're bringing it back. We're bringing it back. I think we can do it. I think we really can do it. It is really fascinating. And I have a lot of people now that have come up to me and been like, I can't help you're, like, in my head when I'm now getting dressed.
Nikki Campbell
Yes.
Liv Perez
Which I think is, like, the funniest thing ever.
Nikki Campbell
I Mean, I would love, like, for fashion TV to come back. Like, the tv, like, the Fashion Channel?
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
Like, I would love to see, like, someone like you commentating on Fashion Week and.
Liv Perez
Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
Trends from Fashion Month around the world. There's always something going on.
Liv Perez
Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
Like, if it's not couture and it's not ready to wear, there is some crew show somewhere in the world. There is always something happening. And I just think that the fashion community deserves a bigger hub.
Liv Perez
Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
Bring it back. I would actually love to know. And the one thing I love following you for is menswear. I feel like you're very critical of menswear, and there's a lot of space for men to be doing cooler stuff on the red carpet. What do you think men could be.
Liv Perez
Doing more of everything.
Nikki Campbell
You're like, anything but a flat tuxedo.
Liv Perez
No, literally, by the way, because they're obsessed with doing that. It's, like, insane.
Nikki Campbell
Well, it's the safe move.
Liv Perez
It's safe. And men are always. Men will always let you down. You know what I mean?
Nikki Campbell
In every way.
Liv Perez
In every way. And it is so mind blowing to me because as someone especially who comes from a menswear background, actually, when I worked at Vogue, I was on the menswear team. I worked at Thom Brown, which is a very menswear focused brand. And I watch men's fashion, and I'm always tuned into Men's Fashion Week and on the Runway. It's insane. The most insane things are happening in menswear right now. Like, there's so many incredible options that are not classic black suiting.
Nikki Campbell
Colman Domingo. Colman Domingo just put it on the Pinterest board.
Liv Perez
I know. Like, thank God for him.
Nikki Campbell
Thank God for him.
Liv Perez
You know what I mean?
Nikki Campbell
He's doing it for all of us.
Liv Perez
Yeah, he really. He really is. He really is. Without him, we would be lost.
Nikki Campbell
Truly. Who else do you love? Who else do you think is, like, doing interesting things?
Liv Perez
I love Timothee Chalamet. Same. I love Timothee Chalamet. Same. And that McQueen scarf he's bringing back.
Nikki Campbell
I'm loving it.
Liv Perez
Tiny pink Chanel bag.
Nikki Campbell
The Chanel bags really did me in. He is so did me in. I was like, oh, my God. Like, I do. I have to get my husband a little Chanel back.
Liv Perez
Wait, I think you. I think you might.
Nikki Campbell
Yeah, yeah. To me, I'm. I'm loving the point of view.
Liv Perez
Yes. He's really making it work. Some things work. It's working for me, personally, and I think there's A lot of younger men, like Timmy or like Drew Starkey.
Nikki Campbell
Drew Starkey, I love.
Liv Perez
Yeah. They're doing more interesting things.
Nikki Campbell
Is there someone in your mind who's, like, a fashion icon, like, can do no wrong? Every time you see them, you're just like, yep, great.
Liv Perez
Oh, my gosh. That's a really good question. I mean, I've. It's probably so boring because it's like, duh. But, like, I have to. I always have to say Zendaya. I just haven't really seen her look bad.
Nikki Campbell
Well, I think she's, like, a gorgeous human.
Liv Perez
It's partially because she's insanely beautiful.
Nikki Campbell
Insanely beautiful.
Liv Perez
And would be a model either way. Who else I think is good? You know, I just. I also. I really admire people, even if it's not my taste, that have, like, a really distinct point of view and sense of style. It's just like. It's weird. You don't have to like it. You can look at that and be like, why are they wearing that? But it's just who they are. I think, like, Billie Eilish is a good example of that.
Nikki Campbell
It's funny even watching you and Jenna Lyons do your joint kind of duo reviews. Anytime Billie Eilish came up on the screen, you both were, like, unjudgeable.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
It just is unjudgeable. She's so in her own lane that, like, it's not for anybody to critique. She's just kind of doing her own thing.
Liv Perez
Yes. That is a sign of true personal style is when I can't. I cannot say anything about it because they're just being who they are, and that comes through, and it's always gonna. It's always gonna work because it's expressing their authentic self. So that's like, the. Those are the best people that if I can't really critique what they're wearing ever.
Nikki Campbell
Yeah.
Liv Perez
I love, like, what Hunter Schaeffer is doing lately on the red carpet.
Nikki Campbell
She's beautiful. Like, oh, my God, anytime I see her in something, I'm just like. I mean, the moment she came out at the Vanity Fair party a few years ago in the.
Liv Perez
The Prada.
Nikki Campbell
Was that Prada?
Liv Perez
I was the one flowing in the wind. Are you talking about that one?
Nikki Campbell
I mean, that was stunning. That was like a whole world. No, I'm talking about the feather across her breast.
Liv Perez
Oh, yes. I think that was Ludovic.
Nikki Campbell
Ludovic. I think that was, like, the first time I had heard of Ludovic, too.
Liv Perez
Oh, really?
Nikki Campbell
I think so. Yeah.
Liv Perez
That was amazing.
Nikki Campbell
That was, for me, cemented. She's fashion icon.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
I'm like, oh, my God, that was so brave. Like, and she looked so hot.
Liv Perez
I know. So hot. That's a moment when I'm like, wait, what's my sexuality? I don't actually know anymore.
Nikki Campbell
I just think. I think she's so beautiful.
Liv Perez
Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
She can kind of wear a trash bag, and I think she looks awesome.
Liv Perez
Yes. You know who else I think is, like, that is Taylor Russell. I mean, Taylor Russell, I love that girl so much.
Nikki Campbell
So much. Like, it's really hard because she's one of those people who's all over my Pinterest board for her. Like, street style in London.
Liv Perez
Oh, yeah.
Nikki Campbell
And, like, then I'll go put it on. And I'm like, you look frumpy. But Taylor is just so beautiful that it just all works.
Liv Perez
Oh, my God. It really. It really does. Even this. Even the street style off, dude. All of it. It's just working. It's so annoying. I don't look like that. Like, the same thing does not happen to me.
Nikki Campbell
You know, I've been loving Gracie Abrams.
Liv Perez
That is my girl, by the way.
Nikki Campbell
She does something for me.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
She scratches an itch for me. That just, like, as, like, a Chanel lover, as, like, someone who really, like, enjoys really feminine, beautiful dressing. Like, she just wore that, like, the beaded Chanel on stage. And I was like, oh, my God, I think I'm gonna have a heart attack.
Liv Perez
Yeah. She has been doing really, really well.
Nikki Campbell
Who is underrated, style wise, that you think everybody should be paying a bit more attention to?
Liv Perez
Oh, my gosh. Really good question. For men. I think I said this actually for men. Jeff Goldblum. I say love curveball because Ariana got all the attention and they got all the attention during the Wicked press tour. And I was like, guys, Jeff is right there and right there, amazing things are happening with everything he's doing.
Nikki Campbell
He's always in a great prod of something.
Liv Perez
He's always.
Nikki Campbell
He loves.
Liv Perez
He loves the customer.
Nikki Campbell
I mean, he. When he did the Runway show for Prada, I was like, they know what. Exactly what they're doing.
Liv Perez
Yes, they really, really do.
Nikki Campbell
He really is one of my favorite menswear dressers.
Liv Perez
One of my favorite menswear dressers. A hot take that I think people consistently disagree with me on. I would say, is Jeremy strong?
Nikki Campbell
Wow.
Liv Perez
I. I see him. I say yes.
Nikki Campbell
As a Laura piano girl. I will say yes. Sometimes I'm like, whoa.
Liv Perez
Yeah. And I like that. I think that's what I Like, because it's so.
Nikki Campbell
Do you think that he, like, does it for the reaction?
Liv Perez
I think he might actually.
Nikki Campbell
I don't think he actually does it thinking he's like, oh, yeah, this is it.
Liv Perez
Right.
Nikki Campbell
I think he's like, I want.
Liv Perez
He might be.
Nikki Campbell
To play a character. Yeah.
Liv Perez
He might be doing it for the bit. He might be doing it for the bit. I mean, listen, when you're wearing. Yeah. When you're wearing a suede bucket hat.
Nikki Campbell
No, it's crazy.
Liv Perez
To the Golden Globes. Like, you're, you know what's. You know what people are going to say about that?
Nikki Campbell
You are your character.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
Literally mine recently is Saoirse Ronan.
Liv Perez
Oh, my God.
Nikki Campbell
Like, it's getting love, but just not the love that I want. I want, like, mass love.
Liv Perez
You know what?
Nikki Campbell
It's getting niche love.
Liv Perez
It is getting niche love.
Nikki Campbell
And no, I want global mass love.
Liv Perez
Right. Because it's so specking good specific. You know, it's like.
Nikki Campbell
I think it's great.
Liv Perez
The girls, you know, she's wearing like, archive Celine, like Phoebe Filo era and like new designers, like Colleen Allen, who's, like such an upcoming, like New York girl. And I think, like, the globally. They don't get, like, the intricacies of how amazing what she is. What she's doing is.
Nikki Campbell
I mean, even the custom Vuitton dress that she just had was unbelievable.
Liv Perez
Yes. With the sleeve. Yeah.
Nikki Campbell
The built in sleeves.
Liv Perez
Yeah, yeah.
Nikki Campbell
And the red lip.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
Made that look.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
And that's a choice.
Liv Perez
That is a choice.
Nikki Campbell
She could have been like. No, no, no. I want to be muted, but no, the red lip was everything.
Liv Perez
I know. And you know, in that same vein, because they share the same stylist also underrated, I think, is IO, IO, Iowa.
Nikki Campbell
BE I was killing it.
Liv Perez
Yeah. Insane.
Nikki Campbell
Like what she wore to snl. She was wearing this, like, black voluptuous dress with a choker. It was. It was very. It was giving. Oh, that was Colleen Ellen.
Liv Perez
It was Colleen Ellen. Yes. It's amazing, you know, like, and it's so. Yeah. It's so rare to see stuff like that. Like, to see, like, evolution like that.
Nikki Campbell
When Saoirse walked out, when she walked out in this mini blue Ferragamo, I was like, we are entering a new world.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
It was so hot.
Liv Perez
So hot.
Nikki Campbell
I loved it. I absolutely loved it. I thought she. I'm like, so ready for her to keep just, like dominating all the amazing things.
Liv Perez
Yeah, she is top of the top. I'm loving what she's doing. I love when they have like a. You know, just like a reinvention like that. It's amazing.
Nikki Campbell
You were talking about Colleen Allen, and this might be your answer, but I'm wondering if there's a designer right now that you think more people should be paying attention to, both for Runway and red carpet.
Liv Perez
Ooh. I will have to say. I will have to say I will give you another one too. But I will have to say Colleen Allen is, like, top of my list. She's actually. I'm biased because she's a good friend of mine. We met each other when we first started working for Vogue together. And she was at Central St. Martin's, I was at Parsons.
Nikki Campbell
Wow.
Liv Perez
We always kind of were connected. And I always knew, you know, she's, like, amazing. She worked at the Row for a very long time, was building, like, their menswear, and then expanded it to women's wear as well. It's just, like, really good. And it's one of those brands that it's like, if you're in the industry, you know. You know, in New York, she's making, like, waves right now, but, like. And she's been doing everything, you know, she's done custom looks for Charlie, works a lot with Saoirse Ronan, did Paloma Assessor for a few events. It's, like, really, really, really good. It's really, really strong. But it's, like, niche New York, and it's, like, one of those brands I think has the potential to be, like, just huge.
Nikki Campbell
Like, just huge exciting.
Liv Perez
Yeah, it's really, really exciting. And I love when you can just, like, see that you can see the culture around a designer happening. Like, that's like. Nothing gets me more excited in the world. I love that.
Nikki Campbell
What's one thing you think someone should never wear on a red carpet?
Liv Perez
Ugh. I hate. Oh, my God. There's actually a long list of them. First of all, I hate a peep toe. I hate a peep toe. Stop wearing them. Like, please.
Nikki Campbell
They're very odd.
Liv Perez
They're very odd.
Nikki Campbell
I actually don't think I own a peep toe.
Liv Perez
Well, you have taste. That's why.
Nikki Campbell
Thank you.
Liv Perez
You know, that's why.
Nikki Campbell
Yeah, they're just kind of weird. Like, I don't. You know someone recently, like, I do AMAs on the weekend. I help people shop for things or, like, help for new looks. And I had one that was so traumatizing recently where they were asking me about a pair of ballet flats, and I was like, great. And they're like, no, no, no. Like, I want a Ballet flat with toe cleavage. And I said, what'd you just say? And she was like, toe cleavage. Like, I want it to be like a skinny flat. I want people to see the cleavage of my toe. And I was like, are you talking about, like, the area? You want people to see the area between your toes? Like, you just want this top part to be high so people can see the lines?
Liv Perez
Oh, my God.
Nikki Campbell
And I was like, I gotta go.
Liv Perez
Oh, my God, I'm sweating. I gotta go live. That's really dark.
Nikki Campbell
And a peep toe is toe cleavage.
Liv Perez
I know. And that's why I hate it so much.
Nikki Campbell
Hate it. Like, I don't want someone to see the cleavage of my toes.
Liv Perez
No, no. And no one wants to see that, by the way. This is really disturbing. I wish I had never heard about this.
Nikki Campbell
Okay, so peep toe.
Liv Perez
Don't lie.
Nikki Campbell
No toe cleavage.
Liv Perez
Yeah, no toe cleavage, please. I also generally, I do not think peplums are good, good ideas.
Nikki Campbell
Even now when they were all over the Runway.
Liv Perez
Yeah, a little bit.
Nikki Campbell
What if they're soft?
Liv Perez
If they're soft? There's certain. There's certain.
Nikki Campbell
Like, what about the Elle Fanning look you just reviewed from the SAG Awards?
Liv Perez
I did say that that was good. Loewe. It was working. That was working. And I did say that that was an exception.
Nikki Campbell
It's good with a skirt. Give it with the skirt.
Liv Perez
Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Nikki Campbell
I can give it a skirt. Like, not with a jean, but, like, with a skirt.
Liv Perez
Yes.
Nikki Campbell
What about the CJR peplum suit that walked down the Runway?
Liv Perez
Okay, now you're like, okay, now you're presenting, like, things that I did not think about.
Nikki Campbell
Good.
Liv Perez
Fine. Liv, Fine. Wow.
Nikki Campbell
I really got you there, you know?
Liv Perez
But it's like, it's. And you know what? It's the same thing that I say with gloves. Opera length gloves are the most over accessorized.
Nikki Campbell
Too many. Too much.
Liv Perez
There's too much.
Nikki Campbell
Yeah.
Liv Perez
And like, literally 5% of the time, it works.
Nikki Campbell
Yep.
Liv Perez
I will wedding.
Nikki Campbell
Keep it for, like a gala. It doesn't need to be on the red carpet.
Liv Perez
I think women love the idea of, like, the drama that it brings. And I'm like, stay critical, ladies. Okay. Stay critical. You don't need it. A lot of the times it just makes things worse.
Nikki Campbell
Totally.
Liv Perez
You know, but it's a trend, and the trend will go away.
Nikki Campbell
It will. What's your best piece of advice for anybody who wants to be in fashion and have a career like yours?
Liv Perez
Just connect with as many people as possible. It's really an industry that's all about relationships.
Nikki Campbell
It's true.
Liv Perez
It's all about relationships.
Nikki Campbell
100% true.
Liv Perez
100%. 100%. You have to, like, know your people, be good to your people, check in on them. It's fun. And listen, like, everyone bounces around. You know, they go from one house to the next, and then they switch. And you never know how you're gonna be working with somebody and just connect. Just get coffee, you know, like, just talk to them. Just, you know, you don't always have to, like, know what. How are you gonna work together or what's gonna happen? But just, like, they keep you in your mind, you keep them in yours, and then you kind of, like, make the magic happen. And that's literally, like, every job, every gig, like, it all just comes from people that, like, want to work with you and, like you as a person, to be honest with you.
Nikki Campbell
Foster those relationships.
Liv Perez
Yeah. Yeah. Foster them.
Nikki Campbell
Thanks for being one of my people.
Liv Perez
Of course. Thank you for being one of mine.
Nikki Campbell
Of course. Forever.
Liv Perez
Forever and always.
Nikki Campbell
And thank you for doing the pod. This was so fun.
Liv Perez
Oh, my God. I had the best time.
Nikki Campbell
So happy to have you.
Liv Perez
I'm so honored I made it to the pod.
Nikki Campbell
Are you kidding? Are you kidding? I'm so happy to have you on the pod.
Liv Perez
This is a big day for me.
Nikki Campbell
Full circle.
Liv Perez
Yeah. Full circle moment. We love that.
Nikki Campbell
Love.
