Today let's learn a new word, slot! [Transcript: Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills. Today’s word of the day is slot. Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an idea or concept. Therefore, slot is a noun. Slot has three meanings. Firstly it is a long, narrow opening or slit in a machine for something to be inserted. Secondly it is a groove or channel into which something fits or in which something works. Lastly it is an allotted place in an arrangement or scheme. An example of slot used as a noun in a sentence would be: She dropped a coin into the slot of the jukebox and chose her favourite song. Place a screwdriver into the slot of the screw and turn anti clockwise to loosen it. Or, We booked the evening slot, so we'll have time to have lunch before. Slot can also be used as a verb, with four meanings. Firstly it is to place something into a slot. Secondly it is to be placed or able to be placed into a slot. Thirdly, in regards to people, it is to fit easily into a role or situation. Lastly it is to manage to find a time or opportunity to deal with someone or something. An example of slot used as a verb in a sentence would be: He needs to slot the final piece of the puzzle into place and the picture will be complete. The piece should slot into the hole over there. She has a very versatile character, she is able to slot into almost any situation with ease. Or, I'm sure I can slot you in later, I have some time after the meeting.
