Maybe more. Okay, she's been in fashion for a hundred years. No, it feels like you were one of these makeup artists who really crossed over from fashion into entertainment, into really the biggest movie stars of all time. That is not an easy feat. What was that like? Cause I've known you in the fashion world again. You've done all your editorial. You're at the height. What kind of made you start to cross over?

It was the end of the 90s, the early 2000s, and my husband, we were married, lived in LA and I lived in New York, and he tried to live in New York. It wasn't for him. And he wanted me to move to la. And I was resistant because I didn't want to be a LA makeup artist because it wasn't cool enough. But in New York, I started working more and more with actresses for magazine covers. And I'm getting booked for all these covers, and it's always actresses, actresses, and it's like, where have the models gone?

And there was that shift.

It was a shift. It was a real tangible shift. And I'm like, wait, so if that's if I'm working with them and I like this, why aren't I there?

Yeah.

So I decided to make the move. This is kind of an amazing story. I decided to make the move. And so I literally landed on my move trip. On my move flight from New York to la. I'm at the baggage carousel and there's a message to call my agent. And I'm standing at baggage. I've got a lot of luggage. Cause I just moved. And he said, you just booked the Vanity Fair Hollywood issue cover with Annie Leibovitz.

Oh my God.

Yeah, I'm standing at the carousel. I had just moved and I'd never done a Vanity Fair cover before. I'd never worked with Annie before. And it was because a couple of those actresses who were appearing on the COVID had suggested. Had suggested me. Cause I had done a couple things in New York with them. And so it was like, were you dying? I. It was like lightning struck and I was like, thank you.

Okay, so let's. For the listeners, Vanity Fair. This is the most sought after cover of the year. It's multiple actresses. They pick them anywhere between 5 and 7 of the moment. Yeah, Actors and actresses. That is incredible.

And then I went on to do multiple covers with. And that was my first time with Annie. And then I.

Her niece is a good friend of mine. She lives in town. Yeah.

Oh yeah. So then I started working with Annie right after, you know, from then on. And I shot my first Vogue cover with Annie shortly thereafter right when I moved to la.

Isn't that crazy? When you moved to LA after all of those years in New York?

Patti Dubroff
Yeah. And you know, I just also like the fashion thing. I. I love fashion. I like fashion. I don't love. I don't live for clothes and fashion. Like, you know, I like it.

You live for beauty.

I live for beauty. I live for other things, honestly, spiritual things. But that's a whole other conversation anyway. But beautiful things. I didn't love the circus element of fashion. You know, like it felt very circus. Like I. And I, when I started working with actor, act actresses, I just needed to make them feel like the most beautiful version of themself. And that's what I love doing.

Well, you get to build real relationships and I know you're a relationship person and I think that for you is you are able to connect with someone and then go on the road with them, go on their press tour.

It's like a safety net, you know, with actors, actors especially, and the more famous you are like, they need to have, you know, a kind of a safe, protective inner circle that helps them in very vulnerable kind of scenarios because they are in their most vulnerable because they're having to present themselves as themselves, not in some character as themselves. To the world stage where the scrutiny is real. Unreal, unreal, Unreal.

Well, you know, these humans who wake up, we all know. We all wake up human. Some days the eye bags are bagging and, you know, they're expected. Look superhuman when they're just humans. And we all know very well that it takes a whole village to create that facade.

Definitely not overdoing her, you know? And actually, for anyone I work with, I don't want to overdo anyone. I don't want to.

I don't want someone to see someone and say, like, oh, your makeup. It looks so good. It's like, oh, no, you're beautiful. Right. And it all harmonizes, but it's not. The makeup is the thing. I don't need to put a stamp, like a brand stamp on it.

Yeah. But I think that is your stamp.

I think you enhance the natural beauty of everyone. You're not trying to contour face into something.

I don't even know how to do false lashes. I mean, yes, I said that. I mean, I can figure it out, but I'm not very good at it. Contouring does. I do not look at someone's face and think, I need to restructure their bones.

Like, no, I just want to.

But how you layer that foundation, how you build that skin.

Well, yeah, I take time before I touch any makeup. I take, like, a good 20 minutes of skin prep, and that's with tools.

And what does that look like?

I have a microcurrent. The one I have is from Korea. It's really. It works well. It works fast. There are other microcurrents that are. You don't have to go to Asia for, like, the zip and the NuFace. Blah, blah, blah.

Talk about that before. Right before. And what do you think that does?

Patti Dubroff
Well, what I see it does, and it's incredible because doing one side and then leaving the other side, and, like, the show and tell of that, you see, it lifts the planes. It lifts. It kind of. It gives a lift. But what it really is doing is it's working out the. It's oxygenating. It's working out the muscles. It's giving stimulation. I just always think, like, I want stimulation and not, like, paralyzation, you know, I don't want it to look paralyzed. I want it to look like it's been worked out and alive so that microcurrent is giving, like, real stimulation. Then I'll go in with face rollers after the microcurrent.

And then I, like, focus on certain planes that need a little extra help. And it also just feels so good.

If I can tell someone's stressed, I'm gonna, like, use a roller on the back of their neck and their shoulder and, like, get some of the tension out, like.

Because I think it's also important when you to read that room.

Oh, my God, absolutely. Sometimes I am mute, silent, and sometimes I'm, like, talking about weird shit, you know, like, and whatever weird adventure I've been on. But there's times I'm mute, silent because the room is telling me that it's a time for introspection, quiet, you know.

That'S what I sometimes need, that sometimes I'm like, oh, my God, I can't have another conversation.

I just need to sit here and do nothing.

Yeah. All right. So back to the face.

Oh, yes. So we've done so face microcurrent, then like, a gua sha rollers. I like Refa. It's a Japanese brand. A lot. Da, da, da. Then I get something cold and I have cold rollers. So I'll get an ice bucket. You know, I have a nice bucket. Have the cold roller in. Then I'll endure a. Makes a really nice one. Dore that Garan stories. Like, then I'll use the cold tool to, like, then, like, push back whatever needs pushing back. That has a little extra inflamed puffiness. And that's like 15, 20 minutes of manipulation of the face. And then all of a sudden it looks alive. And then the trick is you don't need as much foundation, you don't need as much highlighter, whatever product to get that glow. Because the glow is coming because of the circulation. The circulation, the oxygenation, the. The stimulation. A new tool that I just added to my little toolkit is a. You know, have you had cupping? You know, Chinese medicine cupping? They make facial cups.

Yeah. There's always crystals that kind of get put out on the, you know, makeup table. And I pick them depending on what I think the person's gonna need or what I'm gonna need, you know, to.

I think maybe it came out a little bit before. So maybe I'm a little late to the game with the launch. But I've been focusing it on the, on my skin in general, but especially on those spots. They're gone. My friends noticed, my daughter noticed when I was using plated for like four weeks, five weeks religiously. My daughter's like. And she's very picky. She's like, mom, why does your skin look so good?

Okay, well I would tell her to just know that her life was going to be more magical than she could even imagine. But can I tell a quick story?

Patti Dubroff
Okay. So after the Barbie tour, we were on the Barbie tour. We were on the high of highs. Right? The high of highs. And then the actors strike struck and we got sent home. We were in London, we were supposed to go to Berlin, we were supposed to go to Japan, we were supposed to go to New York. It all got shut down. So I got sent home and it was kind of like a woo, bummer. You know, I'm sitting in front of my altar meditating and just kind of sitting, you know, in my zone. And I have a flash of me as a 10 year old sitting in front of, you know, those Barbie heads that you could brush her hair and with little crayons, put makeup on her. I'm sitting in front of my Barbie head and I'm wishing that I could do this, which is making her pretty when I grow up. And that's like my first memory of like why I'm a makeup artist. Because that Barbie head would be my. Oh, I love that.

And then it flashes in my mind's eye from me, 10 year old with that plastic Barbie head, to Margo, sitting in front of Margo and getting her ready to be the representation of Barbie across the globe. I have full body shivers.

As I'm telling my own story, as I'm telling my own story, I'm like, I know. And that was in my meditation where I saw little me and Barbie and then big me and Barbie and realizing my dream came true. My dream came true.

Yeah. Did you always know you wanted to?

Yeah, from when I was 10, I knew I wanted to be. I didn't know what a makeup artist was because back then you didn't know, like it wasn't a career choice. It wasn't like nurse and doctor or you know, whatever, nurse or teacher. I had to figure it out by like going, oh, there's a store that has ladies that are selling the stuff. So that's why I moved to New York City straight from high school. Cause I was like, I'm gonna be. I wanna be around makeup. So I have to go to a department store to do it. And then I started assisting and working at MTV and blah blah, blah. But I didn't know it was a career except that to sell makeup. So that's what I did first.

You know, I don't. I know because it's exhausting.

Trust me. I'm exhausted. I just started my skincare brand, which I'm gonna give you some freely.

Oh, thank you. But I mean, I don't. I am. I guess I'll hard launch it here. There is a book coming out and that feels like my mission. And you know, these things take time, but I can't believe I'm telling you guys.

You know, these things take time, so I can't say a date, but what I'm really proud of is it's looking at beauty from a very deep and spiritual place.

You know, I love it is really how you feel on the inside as much as how you look on the outside.

It is everything. It's how you connect with yourself. When I was at Canyon Ranch speaking to these women and they invited me and they said I could talk about anything, so I could have taught how to put on blush for an hour, whatever. And I was like, it's scary, but I'm gonna talk about what my book is about to this group of strangers, 50 women, whatever. And I watched them come in. They looked the way they looked, and an hour later, they all looked more beautiful. And I didn't touch one of them. We just talked. And it was like, yes, this is what this feels like. My mission and why I'm in this position. And if I was to just make more lipstick and lip pencils, because I was. I'm like, it doesn't feel like enough. I feel like I need to help, like, elevate people to a place where they can find acceptance of their own beauty no matter what.
