Maybe more. Okay, she's been in fashion for a hundred years. No, it feels like you were one of these makeup artists who really crossed over from fashion into entertainment, into really the biggest movie stars of all time. That is not an easy feat. What was that like? Cause I've known you in the fashion world again. You've done all your editorial. You're at the height. What kind of made you start to cross over?

Patti Dubroff (4:05)

It was the end of the 90s, the early 2000s, and my husband, we were married, lived in LA and I lived in New York, and he tried to live in New York. It wasn't for him. And he wanted me to move to la. And I was resistant because I didn't want to be a LA makeup artist because it wasn't cool enough. But in New York, I started working more and more with actresses for magazine covers. And I'm getting booked for all these covers, and it's always actresses, actresses, and it's like, where have the models gone?

Molly Sims (4:38)

And there was that shift.

Patti Dubroff (4:40)

It was a shift. It was a real tangible shift. And I'm like, wait, so if that's if I'm working with them and I like this, why aren't I there?

Emisha Gormley (4:51)

Yeah.

Patti Dubroff (4:51)

So I decided to make the move. This is kind of an amazing story. I decided to make the move. And so I literally landed on my move trip. On my move flight from New York to la. I'm at the baggage carousel and there's a message to call my agent. And I'm standing at baggage. I've got a lot of luggage. Cause I just moved. And he said, you just booked the Vanity Fair Hollywood issue cover with Annie Leibovitz.

Molly Sims (5:18)

Shut up.

Emisha Gormley (5:19)

Oh my God.

Patti Dubroff (5:22)

Yeah, I'm standing at the carousel. I had just moved and I'd never done a Vanity Fair cover before. I'd never worked with Annie before. And it was because a couple of those actresses who were appearing on the COVID had suggested. Had suggested me. Cause I had done a couple things in New York with them. And so it was like, were you dying? I. It was like lightning struck and I was like, thank you.

Molly Sims (5:48)

Okay, so let's. For the listeners, Vanity Fair. This is the most sought after cover of the year. It's multiple actresses. They pick them anywhere between 5 and 7 of the moment. Yeah, Actors and actresses. That is incredible.

Patti Dubroff (6:07)

And then I went on to do multiple covers with. And that was my first time with Annie. And then I.

Emisha Gormley (6:12)

Her niece is a good friend of mine. She lives in town. Yeah.

Patti Dubroff (6:14)

Oh yeah. So then I started working with Annie right after, you know, from then on. And I shot my first Vogue cover with Annie shortly thereafter right when I moved to la.

Molly Sims (6:25)

Isn't that crazy? When you moved to LA after all of those years in New York?

Patti Dubroff (6:28)

Yeah. And you know, I just also like the fashion thing. I. I love fashion. I like fashion. I don't love. I don't live for clothes and fashion. Like, you know, I like it.

Emisha Gormley (6:41)

You live for beauty.

Molly Sims (6:41)

You live for beauty.

Patti Dubroff (6:42)

I live for beauty. I live for other things, honestly, spiritual things. But that's a whole other conversation anyway. But beautiful things. I didn't love the circus element of fashion. You know, like it felt very circus. Like I. And I, when I started working with actor, act actresses, I just needed to make them feel like the most beautiful version of themself. And that's what I love doing.

Emisha Gormley (7:07)

Well, you get to build real relationships and I know you're a relationship person and I think that for you is you are able to connect with someone and then go on the road with them, go on their press tour.

Patti Dubroff (7:17)

It's like a safety net, you know, with actors, actors especially, and the more famous you are like, they need to have, you know, a kind of a safe, protective inner circle that helps them in very vulnerable kind of scenarios because they are in their most vulnerable because they're having to present themselves as themselves, not in some character as themselves. To the world stage where the scrutiny is real. Unreal, unreal, Unreal.

Head to toe a little bit.

Well, you know, these humans who wake up, we all know. We all wake up human. Some days the eye bags are bagging and, you know, they're expected. Look superhuman when they're just humans. And we all know very well that it takes a whole village to create that facade.

To get to that place.

We were just talking to Rachel Zo about that. How what. How the intensity of sitting in that chair is a commitment. The preparation. The commitment. The time.

And you know, like, when someone's in the chair, yes, they can maybe be doing some other things, but the more things they're doing, the longer it's going to take. Because if the head is down reading, if it's, you know, the more movement, it's harder for me to do my job. So it's just like, stay still. We'll bang this out.

It's just. I mean, for me, it's honoring her beauty and not trying to turn her into something that she's not. Making sure that she's comfortable in her skin, but that there's a nod to the mood or whatever it is. I don't know how else to explain it. Except for her. It's not. Definitely not overdoing her, you know? And actually, for anyone I work with, I don't want to overdo anyone. I don't want to.

I don't want someone to see someone and say, like, oh, your makeup. It looks so good. It's like, oh, no, you're beautiful. Right. And it all harmonizes, but it's not. The makeup is the thing. I don't need to put a stamp, like a brand stamp on it.

Yeah. But I think that is your stamp.

Patti Dubroff (10:30)

Hmm. Thank you.

I think you enhance the natural beauty of everyone. You're not trying to contour face into something.

Patti Dubroff (10:36)

I don't even know how to do false lashes. I mean, yes, I said that. I mean, I can figure it out, but I'm not very good at it. Contouring does. I do not look at someone's face and think, I need to restructure their bones.

Emisha Gormley (10:50)

Yeah.

Patti Dubroff (10:50)

Like, no, I just want to.

Molly Sims (10:52)

But how you layer that foundation, how you build that skin.

Emisha Gormley (10:56)

Give us those tips. How do you do it?

Molly Sims (10:57)

Well, yeah, I take time before I touch any makeup. I take, like, a good 20 minutes of skin prep, and that's with tools.

Molly Sims (11:07)

And what does that look like?

Patti Dubroff (11:09)

I have a microcurrent. The one I have is from Korea. It's really. It works well. It works fast. There are other microcurrents that are. You don't have to go to Asia for, like, the zip and the NuFace. Blah, blah, blah.

Molly Sims (11:22)

Talk about that before. Right before. And what do you think that does?

Patti Dubroff (11:26)

Well, what I see it does, and it's incredible because doing one side and then leaving the other side, and, like, the show and tell of that, you see, it lifts the planes. It lifts. It kind of. It gives a lift. But what it really is doing is it's working out the. It's oxygenating. It's working out the muscles. It's giving stimulation. I just always think, like, I want stimulation and not, like, paralyzation, you know, I don't want it to look paralyzed. I want it to look like it's been worked out and alive so that microcurrent is giving, like, real stimulation. Then I'll go in with face rollers after the microcurrent.

Emisha Gormley (12:11)

And then I, like, focus on certain planes that need a little extra help. And it also just feels so good.

Emisha Gormley (12:18)

If I can tell someone's stressed, I'm gonna, like, use a roller on the back of their neck and their shoulder and, like, get some of the tension out, like.

Molly Sims (12:25)

Because I think it's also important when you to read that room.

Patti Dubroff (12:29)

Oh, my God, absolutely. Sometimes I am mute, silent, and sometimes I'm, like, talking about weird shit, you know, like, and whatever weird adventure I've been on. But there's times I'm mute, silent because the room is telling me that it's a time for introspection, quiet, you know.

Molly Sims (12:48)

That'S what I sometimes need, that sometimes I'm like, oh, my God, I can't have another conversation.

Patti Dubroff (12:52)

Right?

I just need to sit here and do nothing.

Emisha Gormley (12:55)

Yeah. All right. So back to the face.

Patti Dubroff (12:57)

Oh, yes. So we've done so face microcurrent, then like, a gua sha rollers. I like Refa. It's a Japanese brand. A lot. Da, da, da. Then I get something cold and I have cold rollers. So I'll get an ice bucket. You know, I have a nice bucket. Have the cold roller in. Then I'll endure a. Makes a really nice one. Dore that Garan stories. Like, then I'll use the cold tool to, like, then, like, push back whatever needs pushing back. That has a little extra inflamed puffiness. And that's like 15, 20 minutes of manipulation of the face. And then all of a sudden it looks alive. And then the trick is you don't need as much foundation, you don't need as much highlighter, whatever product to get that glow. Because the glow is coming because of the circulation. The circulation, the oxygenation, the. The stimulation. A new tool that I just added to my little toolkit is a. You know, have you had cupping? You know, Chinese medicine cupping? They make facial cups.

Yeah. So I've been adding, you know, doing cup cupping in there. And that's like, yes, I believe in cupping.

It makes, well, a huge difference. Especially, well, red, like infrared light therapy, red lights, light panels. I mean, I can't see from here. I'm 3, 4, 5. I use 5 to cover my pigment spots. And just for a little under the cheekbone on the chin. Because you don't want the chin to look light.

You don't want the nose to look light. So I'll use a touch darker one. I always use three shades of foundation on people. Definitely two, three. Most of the time.

The Iris and Romeo blush is a cream.

There is a mixed berry that you can use just on that from rare in that same one. And you can just do it.it's so good. But it's like a dark. It's like a dark berry. I think it's called mixed berry.

You know, dips. No, no, dips does. Dips is great. Dimps makes really great cream blushes also. Oh, really? In these great sticks. This is so smart. It's a black on one side.

Brown on the other. Oh, I love that. So smart. Because you want brown on the bottom lashes, and you want black on the top lashes.

Why? I don't know that.

Because the. The black on the bottom lashes is a little too intense and spidery, unless you're doing, like, a really dark, smoky eye. So the brown is softer and even I use. Actually, that's kind of a thing on, like, on Margot. I use brown mascara mostly the time when. When it's very soft face, so there's not that harsh black.

Love that dips. Okay. And how do you approach color? Like blush or eyeshadow or lips? Like, what's your take on. Do you.

Molly Sims (25:40)

Do you line the lips?

Oh, yeah. Love a lip liner. Ooh, love. Like, now. I didn't for a long time, and now I'm like, liner, liner. I think what's in here? I have a Mario liner that, embarrassingly, when I was putting my makeup on in the car out on the street, I realized I didn't have any eye thing with me except for mascara. So I pulled out my brown Mario lip liner, and I used it on my eye, by the way, because you can. This one's called spiced chai.

And I talked to my doctor and then I went to the eye doctor and they were like, Lumify is not supposed to be used every day because it constricts your. The blood vessels in your eyes. It's why your eyes get so bright and white. So you're actually like doing your eyes a disservice.

If you're constricting it, I think is the right way of saying it. Anyhow, I learned that the hard way.

When we get older, we lose, you know, so much of the ends of our brows. So we've got foundation or, like, the Cera Creole stretching concealer. You definitely want brows. I have to imagine being on these press stores. New York, London, Paris, Asia. What do you do and what does your clients do to try to still Maintain, because it's a lot of time zones, it's a lot of dryness. Flying.

I mean, you know, try to sleep whenever you can, as much as possible, like, whether that means it's on the plane or when you're in a hotel. I mean, I can't speak to my clients per se, but for me, I don't drink alcohol. I'm not a drinker, so that helps. So I meditate. I listen to binaural beats. I listen another retreat. I did wellness thing. I went to a place called the Monroe Institute. And you know about Monroe. Oh, my God. Have you been? No. Well, I did the Gateway this past summer, and so I have a lot.

How many days?

Patti Dubroff (36:50)

It's the. I did the full Gateway the week program, seven day. It was amazing. So I have those. Monroe. I have the app, the Expand app, and I have some of the, you know, programs. So I do a lot of that. I do a lot of, like, headphones, inner work to get me kind of ready for.

Because you have a lot coming at you.

Emisha Gormley (37:12)

Well, you have to be on.

Patti Dubroff (37:14)

Yeah. And I just have to be centered. I can't, like, bring hectic kind of energy into a room. I've gotta, like, you know, I. I have to be a calming force. Yeah, well, your energy. So I gotta do the work before, you know, I get to. To the room. Yeah, the room. You know what I mean?

Energy is really important.

Very intimate. My fingers are on your face and whatever. Like, before I understood energy and protection, protecting myself and keeping my energy clean. I would, like, work with someone who was kind of toxic. And then I would go home and I'd be on the couch for three days or I'd get sick or, like, I couldn't move. And I'm like, what's wrong? Why am I getting sick? And it's like, like, oh, no. I was just with an energy vampire who just took everything out of me. And I just had no idea that they just sucked me dry. So now I really know how to kind of keep my cup full, keep myself protected so that I can give. And then also, I mean, I'm really fortunate that I work with some really astounding people. And I also, of course, I'll meet new people. And if it feels good, I'll I'd love to go back if it doesn't feel good. I'm like, we're good. I'm good.

So I got sent home and it was kind of like a woo, bummer. You know, I'm sitting in front of my altar meditating and just kind of sitting, you know, in my zone. And I have a flash of me as a 10 year old sitting in front of, you know, those Barbie heads that you could brush her hair and with little crayons, put makeup on her. I'm sitting in front of my Barbie head and I'm wishing that I could do this, which is making her pretty when I grow up. And that's like my first memory of like why I'm a makeup artist. Because that Barbie head would be my. Oh, I love that.

Molly Sims (49:06)

And.

Patti Dubroff (49:08)

And then it flashes in my mind's eye from me, 10 year old with that plastic Barbie head, to Margo, sitting in front of Margo and getting her ready to be the representation of Barbie across the globe. I have full body shivers.

Emisha Gormley (49:23)

They're crying.

Patti Dubroff (49:24)

As I'm telling my own story, as I'm telling my own story, I'm like, I know. And that was in my meditation where I saw little me and Barbie and then big me and Barbie and realizing my dream came true. My dream came true.

Emisha Gormley (49:46)

Good things happen to good people.

Molly Sims (49:47)

Yeah. Did you always know you wanted to?

Patti Dubroff (49:49)

Yeah, from when I was 10, I knew I wanted to be. I didn't know what a makeup artist was because back then you didn't know, like it wasn't a career choice. It wasn't like nurse and doctor or you know, whatever, nurse or teacher. I had to figure it out by like going, oh, there's a store that has ladies that are selling the stuff. So that's why I moved to New York City straight from high school. Cause I was like, I'm gonna be. I wanna be around makeup. So I have to go to a department store to do it. And then I started assisting and working at MTV and blah blah, blah. But I didn't know it was a career except that to sell makeup. So that's what I did first.

Molly Sims (50:25)

I wish you had your own line.

Patti Dubroff (50:27)

You know, I don't. I know because it's exhausting.

Molly Sims (50:32)

Trust me. I'm exhausted. I just started my skincare brand, which I'm gonna give you some freely.

Patti Dubroff (50:37)

Oh, thank you. But I mean, I don't. I am. I guess I'll hard launch it here. There is a book coming out and that feels like my mission. And you know, these things take time, but I can't believe I'm telling you guys.

Molly Sims (50:55)

Oh my God, I'm so in this year.

Patti Dubroff (50:59)

You know, these things take time, so I can't say a date, but what I'm really proud of is it's looking at beauty from a very deep and spiritual place.

Emisha Gormley (51:11)

Oh, I love that.

Patti Dubroff (51:13)

And yeah, that's all I'm gonna say right now. But that feels more important to me.

Molly Sims (51:17)

I wanna have a summit where you come and speak.

Patti Dubroff (51:19)

Well, that's what I was just gonna say.

Molly Sims (51:21)

You know, I love it is really how you feel on the inside as much as how you look on the outside.

Patti Dubroff (51:28)

It is everything. It's how you connect with yourself. When I was at Canyon Ranch speaking to these women and they invited me and they said I could talk about anything, so I could have taught how to put on blush for an hour, whatever. And I was like, it's scary, but I'm gonna talk about what my book is about to this group of strangers, 50 women, whatever. And I watched them come in. They looked the way they looked, and an hour later, they all looked more beautiful. And I didn't touch one of them. We just talked. And it was like, yes, this is what this feels like. My mission and why I'm in this position. And if I was to just make more lipstick and lip pencils, because I was. I'm like, it doesn't feel like enough. I feel like I need to help, like, elevate people to a place where they can find acceptance of their own beauty no matter what.

I can't wait for your book.
