El-Erian's The Only Game in Town: Central Banks, Instability, and Avoiding the Next Collapse Author: Summary Shorts Narrator: Doron Alon Format: Unabridged Length: 18 mins Language: English Release date: 09-27-17 Publisher: Summary Media Inc Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Publisher's Summary: Please note: This is a review and analysis of the book, not the original book. Most would agree that the great recession of 2008 was unprecedented. Although it wasn't quite like the depression of 1929, it was worse in other ways. It took most government politicians and central banks off guard and so they had to scramble to find a solution to the underlying causes. They took the onus completely on themselves to solve the issue. They have effectively become the only game in town when it comes to growing the economy. Mohamed A. El-Erian, in his wonderful book The Only Game in Town: Central Banks, Instability, and Avoiding the Next Collapse, goes into some depth as to how the central banks tried to stave off complete collapse and what we can be done to avoid the next collapse. In this review, we will analyze, discuss, and summarize the key points in The Only Game in Town: Central Banks, Instability, and Avoiding the Next Collapse. Enjoy!

Title: Accounting Instruction Subtitle: Reference #300: Adjusting Entries & Financial Statement Creation Author: Bob Steele CPA Narrator: Bob Steele CPA Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 51 mins Language: English Release date: 08-31-17 Publisher: Bob Steele CPA Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Publisher's Summary: This book covers the adjusting journal process of financial accounting and the creation of financial statements, the creation of financial statements being the end goal of financial accounting, the product that the financial accounting system is designed to produce. Financial statements are the primary tool decision-makers use when making financial decisions. Financial statements are the preferred format for financial data to be compiled. After normal business transactions have been input into the accounting system throughout a period, an adjusting process is often needed before the data is then compiled into financial statements, the adjusting process helping to covert financial data to a more perfect accrual system. The adjusting journal entries are often one of the most difficult areas of the accounting process for learners to understand, and is one of the most important topics needed for fully grasping accrual accounting concepts. A solid understanding of the adjusting process, and the reasons for the adjusting process, provides learners the tools needed to explain the difference between a cash basis and an accrual basis of accounting and the reasons an accrual basis is the preferred format for compiling accounting data. We will start our learning about the adjusting process with a review of topics covered in prior texts, including a description of the overall financial accounting process, and the rules for recording normal transactions. If you do not have an understanding of what financial accounting is, or how to record normal journal entries, it is recommended that you listen to our prior texts first, Accounting Instruction Reference #100 and Accounting Instruction Reference #200. We will then describe what the adjusting process is and how to think about the adjusting process, how the adjusting process fits into the overall financial accounting process, and what makes the adjusting process different. Title: SuperHubs Subtitle: How the Financial Elite and Their Networks Rule Our World Author: Sandra Navidi, Nouriel Roubini - foreword Narrator: Katherine Fenton Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 16 mins Language: English Release date: 08-18-17 Publisher: Nicholas Brealey Publishing Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Publisher's Summary: An intimate glimpse into the world of the financial elite and their unique network of personal relationships. Featuring a foreword by Nouriel Roubini. SuperHubs is a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the global financial system and the powerful personal networks through which it is run, at the centre of which sit the Elites - the SuperHubs. Combining an insider's knowledge with the principles of network science, Sandra Navidi offers a startling new perspective on how the financial system really operates. SuperHubs reveals what happens at the exclusive, invitation-only platforms - The World Economic Forum in Davos, the meetings of the International Monetary Fund, think-tank gatherings, power lunches, charity events, and private parties. This is the most vivid portrait to date of the global elite: the bank CEOs, fund managers, billionaire financiers and politicians who, through their interlocking relationships and collective influence, are transforming the future of our financial system and, for better or worse, shaping our world. Members Reviews: Theory of the Networking Class If you want to know what it's like being a fly on the wall in Davos at the World Economic Forum and similar events, how denizens of high-altitude gatherings operate, this is an interesting book. Global leaders at the pinnacle of society spend much of their energy trading information, ideas, social capital, loyalty in their networks, and constantly trying to expand them, flittering from Davos to central bank meetings to charity boards and galas and the Hamptons. The definitive academic sociological and quantitative study of these networks, their evolution and influence hasn't been written, but this is a highly entertaining and readable portrait. Detailed, descriptive analysis of who really rules the financial system, and how it is done. In her book $UPERHUBS Ms. Sandra Navidi exposes the inner workings of the global financial system. At the center are super connected and influential individuals who pursue their interests. The financial system is one of the most important man made systems. It touches each of us in one way or another. One canât escape it. By pursuing their own interests the actions of a relatively few $UPERHUBS affect the lives of many, and even the entire financial system. What is good for the $UPERHUBS may not be good for the less well connected, less powerful, or even society as a whole. Somehow most readers will probably have suspected this to be the case. In her descriptive analysis Ms. Navidi provides us with details, names, true stories, and observations that only she can tell because she is so close to the $UPERHUBS. Over the years Ms. Navidi has gained the trust and respect of the $UPERHUBS. Naturally $UPERHUBS have no interest in revealing the inner workings of their networks and the power they have. Ms. Navidiâs book is skillfully written in a way that does not offend the $UPERHUBS and still provides deep insights into their world. For those who spend their lives close to the $UPERHUBS this book is a good source of reference. For those who spend their lives far away from any $UPERHUB the book provides insights that no other book is able to deliver. Ms. Navidi's detailed, yet fluent writing style makes her book a pleasure to read. leaving it up to the reader to decide if the protagonists of the story are super villains, super heroes Mrs.

Title: Transcending Capitalism Subtitle: Visions of a New Society in Modern American Thought Author: Howard Brick Narrator: Randal Schaffer Format: Unabridged Length: 14 hrs and 23 mins Language: English Release date: 06-30-17 Publisher: University Press Audiobooks Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Publisher's Summary: Transcending Capitalism explains why many influential mid-century American social theorists came to believe it was no longer meaningful to describe modern Western society as "capitalist", but instead preferred alternatives such as "postcapitalist" society, "postindustrial" society, or the "technological" society. Howard Brick locates this postcapitalist vision within a long history of social theory and ideology. He challenges the common view that American thought and culture utterly succumbed in the 1940s to a conservative cold war consensus that put aside the reform ideology and social theory of the early twentieth century. Rather, expectations of the shift to a new social economy persisted and cannot be disregarded as one of the elements contributing to the revival of dissenting thought and practice in the 1960s. Rooted in a politics of social liberalism, this vision held influence for roughly a half century, from its interwar origins until the right turn in American political culture during the 1970s and 1980s. In offering a historically based understanding of American postcapitalist thought, Brick also presents some current possibilities for reinvigorating critical social thought that explores transitional developments beyond capitalism. The book is published by Cornell University Press. Critic Reviews: "Howard Brick's Transcending Capitalism is a bold and penetrating analysis of modern social thought in the 20th-century United States." (Journal of American History) "An impressive scholarly effort. Highly recommended." (Choice) "Transcending Capitalism is a rich and imaginative historical argument, one from which sociologists will learn much about a major intellectual current in the development of their field." (American Journal of Sociology)

Title: Making It Subtitle: Why Manufacturing Still Matters Author: Louis Uchitelle Narrator: Alex Hyde-White Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 45 mins Language: English Release date: 05-18-17 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 4 votes Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Publisher's Summary: From the longtime New York Times economics correspondent, a closely reported argument for the continuing importance of industry for American prosperity. In the 1950s manufacturing generated nearly 30 percent of US income. Over the past 55 years that share has gradually declined to less than 12 percent at the same time that real estate, finance, and Wall Street trading have grown. While manufacturing's share of the US economy shrinks, it expands in countries such as China and Germany that have a strong industrial policy. Meanwhile Americans are only vaguely aware of the many consequences - including a decline in their self-image as inventive, practical, and effective people - of the loss of that industrial base. And yet, with the improbable rise of Donald Trump, the consequences of the hollowing out of America's once-vibrant industrial working class can no longer be ignored. Reporting from places where things were and sometimes still are "Made in the USA" - Albany, New York, Boston, Detroit, Fort Wayne, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C. - longtime New York Times economics correspondent Louis Uchitelle argues that the government has a crucial role to play in making domestic manufacturing possible. Combining brilliant reportage with an incisive economic and political argument, Making It tells the overlooked story of manufacturing's still-vital role in the United States and how it might expand. Members Reviews: Fantasy Automation is not feasible to regulate, which the author does not even really touch on factories that are highly automated, and how that doesn't help employment. What the author basically describes is a form of universal basic income. Which is not thought out very well. If you subsidize a factory how can you prevent automation from being purchased instead of hiring more people? Are computers considered automation because all manufacturing requires them, but if you took away computer controlled machines we would have a massive increase in employees needed (and with it cost). Where do you draw this arbitrary and imaginary line? (background: I own and operate a machine shop) Important Subject-Rarely Covered by the Media The book is written by veteran NY Times reporter - Louis Uchitelle. The book arrived with no fanfare, recorded by Audible. I'm not sure it is available in written form. I bought it having been familiar with Uchitelle's writing. I think the book could have been more comprehensive. It's mostly Uchitelle's 1st person accounts of various manufacturing companies he's dealt with over the years. He puts forward a few theories about why manufacturing is dwindling in the U.S. and some ideas for its revitalization. He could have spoken to some of the economists who have said that persistent trade deficits usually lead to stagnant growth in an economy, and big problems. and why this hasn't happened yet in the U.S. Because I've studied this issue I'll answer this question myself. My theory is that because the U.S is a reserve currency, and because of the problems with the Euro, the U.S. dollar is strong, and investment is strong. However, I believe that dwindling manufacturing and persistent trade deficits, will eventually sink the dollar, and cause big problems. We've already seen stagnant wages for like 30 or 40 yrs.

Title: History of Money Author: IntroBooks Narrator: Andrea Giordani Format: Unabridged Length: 40 mins Language: English Release date: 05-09-17 Publisher: IntroBooks Genres: Nonfiction, Economics Publisher's Summary: The history of money tells us of the development of the means through which transactions can be carried out with the help of a medium of exchange. For eons now, man has been exchanging goods for a certain price. This price came either in the form of other goods or money. The interesting journey of money from barter products to bitcoin and electronic money covers different ways in which societies and cultures perceived money. There were a lot of things that were used as a medium of exchange before money made its appearance. These included livestock, vegetables, and grains, which were useful for the people. But then there were other things like cowrie shells and beads that were used for money solely because they were very attractive. Precious metals and stones were also used as a medium of exchange because of their usefulness and attractiveness. In the modern world, money has gained a different aspect. It does not require an exchange of produce or commodities. Instead, it relies on the exchange of currencies. Money is available today in different forms like currency notes, coins, credit cards, and electronic funds. In as early as 350 BC, the Greek philosopher Aristotle spoke about the importance of an object for bartering it or selling it. The first official currency is said to be minted in 600 BC in Lydia, which is modern day Western Turkey. But there has been evidence that money may have existed before this in various other cultures and cities. Gradually, the idea of giving monetary value to a relatively insignificant object in order to use it as money became a popular idea. This gave rise to bank notes, which are otherwise just a simple piece of paper with no value.
