It includes the sounds of the Pacific Ocean that I recorded myself, and it's designed to ease anxiety and promote deep rest by gently blending mindfulness with a soothing bedtime journey to help you wake up refreshed and centered. This meditation was inspired by a conversation I had a few weeks ago with a Listen to Sleep supporter named Rebecca who who asked if I'd consider making more meditations because they help her sleep better than the stories do. Well Rebecca, thank you very much for your gentle nudge. I'll definitely be including more meditations like these. As a mindfulness teacher, sleep meditations have always been close to my heart because mindfulness and rest go hand in hand. When we slow down, connect with the breath and bring awareness to the body, we give ourselves the chance to shift out of the day's noise and into something deeper. It's not just about falling asleep, it's about waking up the next day feeling more centered, clear and steady. Mindfulness is a way that we can start to get in touch with our truest nature. And if you'd like to explore this a bit more, you can try my free five day Mindfulness Mini course. It's called the Clear Mind Quest. Just go to clearmindquest.com there's a link in the show notes. It's a gentle way to build habits that support both rest and presence and I think you'll really enjoy it. And when you've completed it, please send me an email@ericistentosleep.com and let me know.

How you liked it. Let's take a moment to just settle in, letting your body find its natural position of rest. Feeling the weight of your body sinking, sinking into the mattress, your head cradling into the pillow. Notice how your shoulders can soften, how your arms can rest alongside your body without any effort. There's nothing you need to do right now except be here in this quiet moment. So let your eyes close gently, like curtains drawing shut at the end of a long day. Feel the darkness behind your eyelids, soft, welcoming darkness that invites you to turn inward. Your breathing is already beginning to slow, finding its own rhythm without any effort from you. Each breath out is a small letting go, a gentle release of whatever the day has brought. And notice the sounds around you and the sound of ocean waves meeting the shore. These sounds don't need to disturb you, they can simply be a part of the tapestry of this quiet evening. Just let them fade into the background as you turn your attention inward to the gentle rhythm of your own breath. Your body knows how to rest. It has done this thousands of times before.
Rebecca
Feel how your muscles are already beginning.
Eric
To soften, how your jaw can release, how your tongue can rest easy in your mouth, your hands can be Completely still, fingers uncurled, palms open. There's a natural wisdom in our bodies that knows exactly, exactly how to prepare for sleep. Now take a moment to acknowledge the day that's ending. Whatever happened today, the conversations, the tasks, the small victories and challenges, all of it can rest now. You don't need to solve anything or figure anything out. The day is complete and night is here to hold you. So let your breath carry away any lingering thoughts, like leaves floating on the ocean, gently moving away from you into the darkness. Now, in your mind's eye, imagine yourself standing at the beginning of a quiet coastal path. The evening air is cool and soft against your skin, carrying the salt scent of the ocean. The distant sound of waves is rhythmic and constant, like the earth's own breathing. The path before you is made of worn stone and packed earth, smooth beneath your feet. The gentle mist surrounds you, not thick or obscuring, but soft and welcoming, like a light blanket of clouds that has settled close to the earth. This mist holds you gently, creating a cocoon of quiet around you. The world feels hushed and peaceful, as if nature itself is preparing for rest. You begin to walk slowly along this path, feeling no urgency, no destination. You need to reach quickly. Each step is easy and natural. The ground is solid beneath you, supporting you completely. And as you walk, you notice how the mist moves around you, sometimes revealing glimpses of wild grasses swaying gently in the evening breeze, sometimes showing you the dark outline of rocks worn smooth by countless tides. The sound of the ocean guides you as you continue, a deep, rhythmic sound that seems to match the beating of your own heart. You realize your walking towards something, not rushing, not seeking, but simply being drawn forward by a gentle pull, like the natural flow of water finding its way to the sea. Through the mist ahead, you begin to notice a soft glow, warm and steady. It's not bright or demanding, but gentle, like candlelight seen through frosted glass. This light seems to breathe with the rhythm of the waves, growing slightly brighter and softer in a pattern that feels as natural as your own breathing. As you continue along the path, the light ahead becomes clearer. Through the shifting mist, you can see the outline of a lighthouse standing quiet and strong against the evening sky. This lighthouse is not tall and imposing, but perfectly proportioned, built of weathered stone that speaks of years of standing peacefully beside the sea. The light at the top turns slowly, casting its gentle beam out over the water and back across the land where you walk. When the light passes over you, you feel a sense of recognition, as if you're being welcomed home after a long journey. The beam is warm and soft, not harsh or searching, but simply present, like a friend's gentle smile. You approach the lighthouse slowly, noticing how the mist seems to part naturally before you, creating a clear path to the small wooden door at its base. The lighthouse stands on a foundation of smooth rocks, and you can hear the waves lapping gently against these stones, a sound so rhythmic and constant it seems to be the heartbeat of this peaceful place. There's a simple wooden bench along the wall of the lighthouse, positioned to face the sea. The bench looks as if it has been there for years, weathered to a soft gray, worn smooth by countless visitors who've come here to rest. You settle onto this bench, feeling how perfectly it supports you, how naturally your body finds its position of rest here. From this place, you can see how the lighthouse beam sweeps slowly across the water, illuminating patches of the sea that sparkle briefly before returning, turning to gentle darkness. The rhythm of this light is hypnotic and soothing. Light, darkness. Light, darkness. Like the rhythm of the breath, like the rhythm of waves, like the natural rhythm of rest and renewal, the mist continues to move around you, sometimes thick, sometimes thin, but always gentle. You realize that you don't need to see everything clearly. There's something deeply restful about being held in this soft, gray quiet, where the edges of the world are softened and the harsh details of day fade into gentle suggestion. You lean back against the lighthouse, feeling its solid warmth against your back. The stone holds the warmth of the day, radiating gentle heat that seeps into your muscles, helping them release and soften. You're completely supported here, held by this ancient structure that has once weathered countless storms and now offers you its strength and stability. As you rest against the lighthouse, begin to notice your body more deeply. Feel how your feet are connected to the earth beneath this peaceful place. Your legs can be completely heavy and still, like driftwood that has found its resting place on the shore, and let this heaviness travel up through your body, your hips sinking into rest, your lower back releasing against the warm stone. Your breathing has found the rhythm of this place now, slow and deep, like the rhythm of the waves. Each breath in draws in the clean salt air, filling your lungs with the peace of this copy coastal sanctuary. Each breath out releases you more deeply into rest, like the waves releasing back into the sea. Feel how your chest can be completely soft and open, rising and falling with the natural rhythm of the lighthouse beam as it turns. Light. Breathe in. Darkness. Breathe out. Light. Breathe in. Darkness. Breathe out. Your heart beats in harmony with the sound of the waves, steady and strong and Completely at peace. Your shoulders can drop away from your ears, releasing any tension they've carried from the day. Your arms can be heavy and still at your sides. Hands rush to open like shells on the beach. Holding nothing, needing nothing. Your neck and head are supported by the lighthouse, allowing your mind to be as quiet as this misty evening. Notice how your face can soften completely, your forehead smooth as the surface of calm water. Your eyes resting easy behind closed lids, like someone sleeping peacefully in a safe harbor. Your jaw can release, your mouth slightly open, breathing in the spirit salt air that carries the essence of deep rest. The lighthouse beam continues its slow rotation and you realize that this light is like your own awareness, sometimes illuminating thoughts or sensations, sometimes resting in gentle darkness. Both the light and the darkness are peaceful. Both are part of the natural rhythm of this place, the natural rhythm of rest. You are completely safe here. The lighthouse has stood through countless nights, offering its steady presence to all who need rest. The waves have been washing these shores for thousands of years, carrying away whatever needs to be released. The mist holds you gently, creating a soft boundary between you and the world, allowing you to rest completely. Just let yourself sink deeper into this feeling of being held and supported. You don't need to do anything, be anything or feel, figure anything out. You are simply here in this place of peace, being breathed by the ocean air, being held by the earth, being watched over by the gentle light. And as you rest here and complete, complete peace, allow yourself to let go of any remaining connection to the day that's ending. Like ships that have safely returned to harbor, all your thoughts and concerns can rest now in the quiet bay of sleep. The lighthouse will keep its gentle watch through the night, but you don't need to tend it or worry about simply is as you simply are. Feel how the mist is growing softer around you, how the boundary between yourself and this peaceful place is dissolving. You are becoming part of the rhythm of this sanctuary. Your breath, the rhythm of the waves, your heart beat, the pulse of the lighthouse beam. Your rest as deep and natural as the sea itself. The night is here now, full and welcoming. Stars are beginning to appear through the mist. Distant lights that echo the lighthouse beam, reminding you that you are a part of something vast and peaceful. The darkness is not empty, but full. Full of rest, full of peace. Full of the gentle presence that holds all things. You have arrived at this place of deep rest. You don't need to journey any further. Tonight. You can let yourself be completely held here, completely supported, completely at peace. The lighthouse beam will continue its gentle turning, the waves will continue their rhythmic song. And you can let yourself drift into the deep rest that your body and mind are calling for. So let go now of any effort to stay awake, Any need to think or plan or remember. Like a boat that has found its mooring, you can rest completely. The night will carry you gently into sleep. And the lighthouse will keep its quiet watch, A symbol of the awareness that rests peacefully within even as you sleep. You've arrived. You're held. You're safe. Let the lighthouse illuminate your heart. Let the waves sing you to sleep. Let the mist hold you gently through the night. You are exactly where you need to be. Good night.
Podcast Title: Listen To Sleep - Quiet Bedtime Stories & Meditations
Episode: The Lighthouse in the Mist
Host/Author: Erik Ireland
Release Date: July 6, 2025
In the July 6, 2025 episode of Listen To Sleep, titled "The Lighthouse in the Mist," Erik Ireland delivers a deeply calming guided sleep meditation designed to ease anxiety and promote profound relaxation. Set against the serene backdrop of a coastal mist, this episode invites listeners to embark on a peaceful journey toward deep rest and renewal.
The meditation, "The Lighthouse in the Mist," was inspired by a heartfelt conversation with a listener named Rebecca, who expressed a preference for meditations over bedtime stories for better sleep quality. Erik reflects on this feedback, stating:
"[02:56] Rebecca: It includes the sounds of the Pacific Ocean that I recorded myself, and it's designed to ease anxiety and promote deep rest..."
Erik emphasizes the integral relationship between mindfulness and restful sleep:
"[03:00] Erik: ...mindfulness and rest go hand in hand. When we slow down, connect with the breath and bring awareness to the body, we give ourselves the chance to shift out of the day's noise and into something deeper."
He invites listeners to further explore mindfulness through his Clear Mind Quest, a free five-day mini-course aimed at building habits that support both rest and present-moment awareness.
Erik begins the meditation by guiding listeners to find a comfortable resting position:
"[04:54] Erik: Let's take a moment to just settle in, letting your body find its natural position of rest. Feeling the weight of your body sinking, sinking into the mattress..."
He encourages gentle relaxation of the body, emphasizing the natural wisdom our bodies possess to prepare for sleep.
Listeners are invited to release the day's stresses and thoughts:
"[06:00] Erik: ...acknowledge the day that's ending. Whatever happened today, the conversations, the tasks, the small victories and challenges, all of it can rest now."
The metaphor of thoughts floating away like leaves on the ocean helps in visualizing the release of lingering concerns.
The core of the meditation transports listeners to a tranquil coastal path enveloped in gentle mist:
"[07:23] Erik: In your mind's eye, imagine yourself standing at the beginning of a quiet coastal path. The evening air is cool and soft against your skin, carrying the salt scent of the ocean..."
As Erik describes the path, the soft mist, rhythmic ocean waves, and the steady presence of a lighthouse create a sensory-rich environment conducive to deep relaxation.
Erik integrates body awareness with the soothing imagery:
"[09:15] Erik: Feel how your feet are connected to the earth beneath this peaceful place. Your legs can be completely heavy and still, like driftwood that has found its resting place on the shore..."
This connection reinforces a sense of groundedness and safety, essential for achieving a restful state.
The meditation emphasizes synchronized breathing with natural rhythms:
"[11:30] Erik: Light. Breathe in. Darkness. Breathe out. Light. Breathe in. Darkness. Breathe out."
This rhythmic pattern aligns the listener's breath with the lighthouse's beam and the ocean's waves, fostering a harmonious internal state.
As the meditation progresses, Erik guides listeners to fully embrace the present moment:
"[14:00] Erik: You are becoming part of the rhythm of this sanctuary. Your breath, the rhythm of the waves, your heartbeat, the pulse of the lighthouse beam. Your rest as deep and natural as the sea itself."
This integration promotes a profound sense of peace and belonging, essential for a restorative sleep experience.
Erik gently concludes the meditation by reinforcing safety and support:
"[16:45] Erik: You've arrived. You're held. You're safe. Let the lighthouse illuminate your heart. Let the waves sing you to sleep. Let the mist hold you gently through the night. You are exactly where you need to be. Good night."
This final affirmation ensures that listeners feel secure and ready to drift into a deep, uninterrupted sleep.
Mindfulness and Presence: Erik underscores the importance of being present as a pathway to restful sleep. By focusing on the breath and bodily sensations, listeners can detach from daily stressors.
Nature as a Calming Influence: The use of natural elements such as coastal paths, ocean waves, and lighthouses serves as powerful metaphors for guidance, safety, and continuity, embodying serenity and stability.
Rhythmic Harmony: Synchronizing breathing with natural rhythms fosters internal harmony, enhancing relaxation and preparing the mind and body for sleep.
Visual and Sensory Engagement: Detailed imagery engages multiple senses, making the meditation immersive and effective in diverting attention from insomnia-inducing thoughts.
Symbolism of the Lighthouse: The lighthouse represents a steady, guiding presence, offering reassurance and a sense of purpose, mirroring the listener’s journey toward rest.
"The Lighthouse in the Mist" is a masterfully crafted guided meditation that leverages mindfulness, natural imagery, and rhythmic breathing to facilitate deep relaxation and restorative sleep. Erik Ireland’s compassionate guidance and the serene coastal setting work in tandem to create an ideal environment for letting go of the day’s stresses and embracing peaceful rest.
