Hello, and welcome back to another episode of Locally Owned. And today, I want to talk about the six myths that cloud our understanding of how to achieve our goals. What if the biggest thing standing between you and the life you want isn't time, talent, discipline, or motivation? What if it's just the fact that you're believing the wrong things about success? Because most people don't fail at goals from a lack of effort. They fail before they ever even really start. They make assumptions about goal setting and how to achieve them that are completely wrong. Or they listen to their fears or think that success is just luck or whatever. But they're believing the wrong things, and they keep waiting for the right things to happen. In this short episode, I want to gently dismantle six of the most common myths about goal setting so you can stop guessing, stop waiting, and finally start moving toward the life you actually want. Let's get to it. All right. Myth number one. That goal setting is only for high achievers. This myth stops most people before they ever even start. People assume that goal achievement requires a certain personality or extreme discipline or this endless motivation. But that's like saying only certain people are capable of driving to California. Anybody can do it. All they gotta do is get in the car, put gas in the tank, follow directions, and keep going. You see, most small business owners that I talk to are not afraid of hard work. They're willing to work hard. They just don't know what to do. And high achievers, they're not born with anything special. They're just hungry for what they want, and they're not willing to settle. But here's the secret. They actually are following a system. And if they have anything special, it's that they're good at following a system. They may come across as high energy or really driven, but they're really no different from the rest of us. They just have a clear vision of where they want their life to be. And it's that clear vision that gives them that drive. And as they make progress along the way, they get energized by seeing their progress. But it all starts with the system. Myth 2. What if I fail? Well, you will. Failure is inevitable. It's part of the process. Anytime you do something you've never done or try to become someone you've never been, develop skills you don't currently have, you're going to fail along the way. But that doesn't mean that you're bad at achieving your goals or that you're bad at doing anything. It just means that you're Learning. Most of us are afraid of failing because we're afraid of that feeling of embarrassment or we're afraid of the loss we're going to experience. And really, there's nothing that can be done about that. But, you know, it's okay to do things afraid, and it's okay to feel embarrassed. Every great advancement of mankind came with the risk of failure. But everyone willing to take that risk understood this about failure to achieve great things. You can't avoid failing first, but failure provides a chance to learn, to rule things out, to adjust and keep going. So back to the California example. Quitting when you fail would be like getting lost on the way to California and then just giving up. If you get lost, you figure out where you turned wrong, you get back moving in the right direction, and you keep going. All right, myth number three. A lot of people don't set goals, and yet they're still really successful. Well, I've seen a lot of people who are really successful in business, and they achieve their success seemingly through sheer grit and determination and long hours. And on the outside, it looks like they worked hard and they achieved their goals. But as I got to know these folks, I could see that their success came at the price of their marriages or their health or their relationships with. With their kids. And sometimes it inflicted damage that maybe could be healed but never really undone. What's really tragic is when they realized they could have enjoyed the same business success without sacrificing those things had they followed a plan, and it would have been more rewarding and probably less of a grind. Jesus is recorded as saying, what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and yet lose his very soul? Accomplishments, wealth, growing your business. It might look impressive and even seem like the answer to a lot of problems, but it's not uncommon for people to achieve success that they thought they wanted, only to feel like they're trapped in this life that they built for themselves. And they built it all at the cost of being present for their families and even their own life. Having a system for setting and achieving goals helps you determine exactly where you want to end up after all your hard work, rather than blindly buying into what maybe the rest of the world is telling you you should want to achieve. There's free information everywhere. Why would I need to sign up for a course? We all have access to information. Information is not the problem. This is like navigating life with a compass, though. A compass can tell you which direction is west, but it can't take you to your aunt's Address in California. To get a precise destination, you need a GPS with turn by turn directions that tracks exactly where you always are. Achieving our goals takes so much more than just having the right information. Think about it like this. Could you really climb Mount Everest just by reading about it and getting all the right information? You would need tools and gear, a team of people, a plan, a guide, someone who's done it before. So let me tell you about something I am really excited about right now. I'm creating an online website that is all about helping people achieve their goals. And I think of it like this Mount Everest example. I'm taking the goal setting system that I use to grow and scale my company and eventually sell it. And. And this is the goal setting system that I taught my employees to help them achieve their goals and live bigger lives. It's the goal setting system that I wish I was taught in high school so that I could have discovered how to point my life in the direction I wanted it to go. So think of this course like your map and your plan for climbing Everest. And on the website there's also tools and exercises that you can use to help you climb and reach your goals. There's also a community of people there and it's a community of people that are all helping one another reach their goals. And then I'm available as your guide. Every week I set aside time to answer questions live. I'll also take you through the course as a workshop where you can sign up and experience going through the course with a group of people. And this way you grow with one another. You feel the support of your group pushing you to reach your goals. I am so excited about it. Look, setting and achieving goals is hard, but it's much harder when you try to do it alone. And as business owners, we can be some of the most alone people. I am building this for you. I know what it feels like to feel that loneliness. I owned a business for 28 years. I'm building this so that you can share your journey and your struggles with other small business owners just like yourself. And I'm going to be kicking it all off by giving you the first three modules absolutely free. I want you to see the value you get because I know that once you do, it's going to be a no brainer and you're going to want to join and you're going to be shocked at how low the price is to join. So here's what you need to do. Go to yourgoalmind.com and sign up. It's that simple. You'll get an email letting you know when we're going live. And from there on, all you have to do is click the button that says, take the course. It's that simple. I'm going to leave a link in the description, or you can just go to YourGoalMind.com and sign up. All right, that's enough of my commercial for this website that I'm building. I'm so excited about it. I know you're going to love it. Let's get back to the six myths. Myth number five. Goals require too much discipline. Goal achievement doesn't happen by consistently doing difficult things. None of us can do that. Goal achievement happens actually by consistently doing something that's boring. Once your plan is in place, the majority of the work is doing the same boring thing over and over and over again. Let's go back to the example of driving to California. You're gonna be sitting in the same car the whole time, doing the same thing, mile after mile. The scenery changes, but the process doesn't. So you don't really need extreme discipline. You just need clarity, consistency, and systems that make boring work doable. I just need to get motivated. Motivation is unreliable. Motivation is contingent on other things. Yet we believe we can generate motivation by listening to a speech or getting inspired by others. But that kind of motivation is hollow, and it's almost impossible to sustain. Believe it or not, what I've witnessed is that progress is the strongest and healthiest form of motivation. It's stronger than pleasure and stronger than pain. Getting motivated just means getting started. The smallest act that moves you closer towards your goal gets you motivated to take another step, and so on. Most people get this backwards. Motivation doesn't lead to action. It's actually action that leads to motivation. Creating a plan and then accomplishing the first task in that plan will generate more motivation to complete the next task than any motivational speech ever will. Just get moving. Moving leads to motivation. That leads to more movement. So here's the truth hiding underneath all six of these myths. Goal achievement is not about personality or perfect discipline or never failing. And it's definitely not about waiting until you feel motivated. It's about getting really clear about who you're trying to become and then having a system that helps you take small, consistent steps in the right direction, mile after mile, like driving to California. And anybody can do that. Not just high achievers or people who are really driven. Anybody, including you. That's why I developed a course. I taught goal setting to my employees. It created a culture in the company that I used to own, the last thing I want to do is just create more information. So I created a course that gives a clear path for where you are today and helps you see exactly the life you want to live. Because the goal isn't just to achieve more. The goal is to become more of who who you were created to be. And once you see that clearly, you get that vision that drives you. And every step you take sustains your motivation. So, hey, just start driving. Thanks for listening to another episode of Locally Owned. I hope that by listening to this episode, you got really helpful information that you could implement immediately. That's the goal of the show. Once again, thanks for listening, and I hope you have an awesome week.
