Boston Celtics stumble in clutch loss to Indiana Pacers as officiating frustrations hit a breaking point. Can the Celtics regroup after three losses in four nights, or will mounting complaints against NBA referees distract from urgent on-court issues? John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal spotlights the brutal stretch and questions whether missed three-pointers and turnovers—not just a controversial Pascal Siakam illegal screen—cost Boston the win. Key analysis covers Payton Pritchard and Neemias Queta’s standout moments, Derrick White’s rare struggles, and the impact of Jaylen Brown’s absence. With Sam Hauser and Baylor Scheierman unable to find their rhythm, the Celtics’ shooting woes deepened. John addresses Joe Mazzulla's postgame statements, the Celtics’ recurring ref grievances, and what the coaching staff must fix before facing the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks. Are the Celtics focused enough to adjust, or is more late-game heartbreak ahead?

Celtics lose to the Indiana Pacers, who have won three games in a row and you know, not really like I know they're last. I know that they've been kind of a joke. I know. But they've also played the Celtics tough and this, this is a little bit closer to what the Pacers like, the Pacers were never supposed to be the, the single digit win team at the bottom of the standings. I know they don't have Halliburton and I know they got Miles, Miles Turner was playing in Milwaukee and all that stuff. But they weren't supposed to be this bad. And look, they've had a bunch of injuries. They're starting to get back to a little bit of who they are. So this isn't exactly the like, oh my God, I can't believe the Celtics lost to what was the last place team in the NBA. This is. They still should have won. They still should have won this game. They had plenty of opportunities to win this game later on. We'll get into once again the officials. Three losses in four nights for the Celtics and once again all three losses. The officials take center stage once again, Joe Missoula with the illegal screen. That's coming up in the third segment. We'll talk about individual performances and all of that when we get to the second segment. But look, another clutch loss for the Celtics is. This is tough, right? We just talked about the clutch crisis in yesterday's show. And I know again, no Jalen Brown, but the, the Celtics still had opportunities to win this game. They had it tied. Now the illegal screen that Joe was talking about was the one that Pascal Siakam set on Derrick White. There is no doubt that that was an illegal screen. The feet were wide, wider than shoulder width. That and the, you know, a lean into Derrick White that is textbook illegal screen should have been called. However, that didn't lead directly to a bucket. That just allowed Pascal Siakam to get the ball. Derrick White recovered and got to him and was in front of him in time. The Celtics had an opportunity to get a stop, they didn't. And then they got the ball back with six seconds and after the foul to give was five and change, they had an opportunity to get a shot. Now that shot that Derek White took, I'm okay with the shot that he took for a couple of reasons. Number one, it. You're not going to get that many better shots. Sure, you want to get a little bit of a, maybe a little bit better action or whatever. You also want to get the shot up in with the hopes of getting an offensive rebound. So it's almost like a two for one type of scenario where you want to give yourself an opportunity for multiple shots. And sometimes people complain like, okay, yeah, I get the two for one, but how about just getting a good shot, a better shot first before you do the two for one, all that, which I totally understand, but down to you have Derrick White with a contested shot shots in that situation. It is almost a miracle to get wide open shots in that situation, the contested shot. But Derek White makes shots like that. Not too worried about that. He got the ball off in enough time for the Celtics to try to get a rebound. They almost did. So it. It wasn't great. But I understand the concept. The concept was there. The concept was good. The intent was good. It's just the Celtics don't have the horses to execute all of this perfectly, especially with Jalen not playing. So a clutch loss, a tough loss. But you know, you could also boil it down to they. They didn't have the shots, didn't fall. What do we talk about all the time with margins? This is a tough shooting night. The Celtics were 40 of 88 from the field. The Pacers were 39 of 84. The Celtics took and made more shots than the Pacers. They took and made more free throws. They had more offensive rebounds. Their turnovers were equal. But the Celtics had more points off of turnovers. They the second chance points because of those offensive rebounds. Sixteen to six points in the paint. Celtics had that. The Celtics had basically every one of these margins except the big 1. Pacers 16 of 37 from 3. 43%. Celtics 9 of 35. So we can't even really complain too much. Like some of those shots, like in the fourth quarter, you could say they maybe. Maybe they were settling a little bit, but 35 three pointers is not a lot. The Celtics didn't. Didn't like overdo the three pointers at all. They took 53 two pointers and then you throw in some of the fouls. So they took more than that really. The. They just missed. They. They just didn't. They didn't have it. They. The. The Pacers and the Pacers started out, by the way, one of six in the first quarter. So that means after the first quarter they were 15 of 31. So they were basically 50% between second, third and fourth quarters, which made it even, even worse. The Celtics scored 21 points and 19 points in the final two quarters, which that's. It's hard to win games. You put up 96 points. You held the Pacers to 98, which is great, but you only put up 96. The offense wasn't there. Celtics started Baylor Scheireman instead of. Well, Jalen was out, so Sam Houser was. Was back in the. In the starting lineup. Shireman Got the start. Kind of like a reward for the way he's been playing recently. So Pritchard, White, Keda, Hauser, Shireman, Charman didn't play his best game. He had a couple of moments, but didn't play his best game. This eight points from Sam Houser, you need more out of that. He, you know, he rebounded. But two of seven from three and a couple of free throws, it's not enough. The Celtics couldn't get it going. Just couldn't get the, the shots falling. And that led to what I thought was the turning point where the Celtics went from like a minute, what was it, a minute and change. Minute, minute 29 of the second quarter to 732 of the third without scoring a bucket. And you extend that way out to the four minute mark. Celtics gave up a run. It was like 15, 2 to start the third quarter. They were, they went from up 9 to down 13 in this stretch. That was where they lost this game. So all of this other stuff that I'm going to get to in a little bit about the refs and illegal screen and all of that stuff, that, that's all fine and Joe Missoula has a point, but this is where they lost the game. That, that stretch of that, okay, you, you don't score in the last minute 29 of the. The second quarter, not great. You want to have at least a bucket or two. But that cold start to start the third, it was, it wasn't just cold. They were sloppy. They were playing gross. Like they weren't valuing the basketball at all. You know, Namish Kato, who, by the way, I'll get to him and say he, I thought he was really good in this game, but he had that one moment of a behind the back. Why did he go behind the back? To try to. I think it was Pritchard and he just passed it out of bounds. Like, what was that? And then there was another play where I think Derek White just dribbled it off his foot. Like there are turnovers, right? There's just. Sometimes you just have turnovers. Sometimes the other team makes a great play. Sometimes you make the wrong read and you turn the ball over. Fine, that happens. This was the not valuing the ball kind of stretch where you just get too loose. You're just kind of, kind of not messing around. I don't think they were messing around, but also they weren't. It wasn't serious. They weren't playing seriously. They were just. And again, four games in six nights. Sometime maybe it's fatigue. Maybe they just, at that point were just like they weren't 100 themselves. And sometimes we've all been there. You get tired and you're a little fatigued and you make a decision. You're like, I don't even know why I just did that. You can see it in the moment. You do something, whatever it is, and you go, I know what I just did was stupid, but I decided to do it anyway. Could be some of that. But they were definitely not valuing the ball. It was, it was too loose. And you know, you get, you get a stretch there where Joe Missoula calls timeout, Celtics come back out, screw up a couple of times, and they calls another timeout right away in the third quarter. He left himself with two timeouts the rest of the way in the third quarter. That's so anti Joe. Remember when Joe didn't call timeouts? Remember when that was the whole thing. His, his first season, everybody's like, he doesn't call timeouts. He doesn't know how to use his timeouts. Now he's like, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Maybe it's because he's around Rick Carlisle. Rick Carlisle throws those things around like nothing. So it was that, that was the stretch. They, the Celtics came back and tied it. Peyton Pritchard was awesome. But that didn't matter. That's where they lost it. They had to come back from all of that and they just didn't have enough after they lost that nine point lead. Never got the lead back. So that's, that's where the turning point was. We'll let me get to individual performances next and then we'll get to that illegal screen because there's some validity to it. But I'm also sick of this. We'll talk about it when we come back. Today's show is brought to you by. Game time. During basketball season, there's nothing like being in the building. All right, The Celtics got a few nice individual performances and a few that I wasn't too thrilled with. So, like I said, Baylor Scheimer got the start, and just. It wasn't exactly his best game, but he earned it. You know, he earned the opportunity, and I'm glad. I'm happy that Joe Missoula gave him that opportunity. Peyton Pritchard, 10 of 22, 23 points to lead the Celtics. He was instrumental in that third quarter. It's so funny how the Celtics, or you see teams do it all the time. They just look terrible, horrible, gross. And then one guy's like, you know what? I've had enough. And that was Pritchard. And then it was just a huge run. They went from down 13 to down 2 to heading into the fourth quarter, which was incredible. Now the fourth quarter, a little bit of separation again for the Pacers, and it took a fight. The Celtics had to fight their way because of the cold shooting, had to fight their way back and claw their way back, and it was just impressive. I think, in the fourth quarter. Nish K did a great job. I thought Nemi had, you know, a few good moments. He's good for, like, one kind of move where you're like, whoa, where did this come from? Early on, you know, a pick where he gets into the post and then he fakes one way and spins and goes the other and, like, finishes like, what. What was that? So he's. He is showing a nice amount of growth. I think the thing that. That stood out to me in. In this game, the. The screening, but not. Not like, just go set a screen. The speed at which he can get in and out. Like, he is recognizing that I'm here. I don't have to touch the guy to set the screen. I. I have impacted him. He's looking at me. He's reacting to me. I've done enough. Get out of that screen fast. And a couple of times he did that, and he was. He had one that resulted in a dunk, another one that resulted, I think, in a foul. An. And one. He just. It's. Sometimes you need to hold that screen. Sometimes you need to just. Not even just ghost it. You just. You intend to send the screen. But once the guy. Once you read that, this. The. The defenders are doing what you want them to do. Boom, you're gone, you're done. You've done your job. Get out. Roll. And the Celtics did a good job finding him. That, I think is. Is one of his biggest progressions this year, really. Honestly, the two things that he's done best are that and keeping the ball up high. One of my huge criticisms of him in the past was how he always has to bring the ball down low, and he doesn't. Every time he gets the ball, he just goes right up. He doesn't have to bring it down anymore. He just finishes. He doesn't have to try to bring it down. Gather and dunk. He. He's done great. Great job with that. And his reading of the screens is navigate. That's just been phenomenal. Like, he's done so much better. So I thought the fourth quarter, Nene, while the Celtics were just kind of still bumbling around, Nene was the guy that was like, okay, I'm going to. I hit a couple of buckets. Keep it close. Don't let the Pacers get away. Gives the Celtics an opportunity down the stretch. Simons was really good in the. Early on. It was the second quarter, I think it was, where he was 12 points. Yeah. Second quarter. So that's where he helped the Celtics build that. That lead. Derrick White, very rare that I. I come out of a game like this, 18 points, five assists, four rebounds. But not only did he not shoot well, a couple of plays where I. I don't know. Like, he just. I don't think his decision making was all that great on some of these plays. He had a couple. There's one that stands out where he had Siakam at the top. Siakam gives it up, and he just for some reason, kind of stayed behind Siakam instead of just being kind of in front of him between him and the basket. And then Pascal just kind of like saunters in and gets the offensive rebound. You can see Derek react like, oh, like, he knew that was his man. He knew that he screwed up. He's one of the smartest. Like, Derek's one of the smartest players that. That you'll watch. And it's rare for him to have a game where he does those little things, those little mistakes. But I was not a fan of how Derek played for a lot of this game. Now, I. I can say that because I hold him to a high standard, and he probably still played better than most people play, but he. He had moments where if he played. If he played the normal Derrick white game. Celtics might have won this, you know, because he would have prevented, he probably would have prevented, I'm gonna say conservatively, at least like two, maybe three buckets that, that they, he, they were preventable. I'll just leave it at that. They were preventable. Luca Garza had a good stretch. Jordan Walsh had a good stretch. He was on the boards. He had nine rebounds. So three steals like Jordan did, you know, played prayed fairly well. So individually it was, it was more just like, hey, they, they weren't, they weren't hitting shots. Sam Hauser was 2 of 7. Derek was 2 of 9. Pritchard was 3 of 7. Anthony was 2 of 7. Jordan was over to Ugo was 0 for 1. That, that, you know, Baylor was over 2. They just couldn't get those shots to fall. If the shots fall, obviously it's a different story here. But like I said, fourth game in six nights without Jalen with a more whole Pacers team. This is not the most shocking one, that most shocking loss that I've seen, but it's, it was a winnable game. Joe Maula will tell you that the illegal screen had something to do with it. I'll get into the legal screen, illegal screen when we come back. You know, I carry a lot of responsibility in my household. If something happened to me, there would be serious consequences. He said two words. It's like the old D, generation X. I got two words for you. Illegal screen. Abby Chin. And shout out to Abby, because she was the one person in there. I'm obviously not there, but I listened to the whole thing, watched the whole thing. She's the only person there asking the questions and said her first question. Joe, you gave yourselves a chance to win. Could you take us through the last couple of possessions? And he said, illegal screen. She said, what do you say? He said, illegal screen. Illegal screen. Illegal screen. What fell apart to get you guys behind and then how were you able to get back into it? Illegal screen. What do you mean by that? What do you people. What do you want people to know about that? Illegal screen. Would you like to say anything else? Illegal screen. That was it. That's how the whole thing went. And then Celtics PR said, thanks, Joe, and he walked off. So the Celtics have lost three out of their last four games. A little bit of a skid. We knew that that was coming. We knew the skid was coming. Denver game. Jalen Brown complaining about the officials beat the Raptors. No problem. Lose to the Spurs. Jalen Brown wants a fine, says, oh, I don't. Expletive, expletive, expletive deleted. Find me. Go ahead, give me the fine. Okay. They. They find him. $35,000. Okay. Then lose to the Indiana Pacers. Joe Missoula. Illegal screen. Illegal screen. Illegal Screen, which. Each one of these. There's. There's some merit to it. There was some merit to it. Jalen was certainly fouled multiple times, and not only was it fouled a couple times, but they didn't. They didn't call it exactly even. Right. There were times on the other side where it was inconsistent. Now this one. The Celtics fought back, tie game, 16 seconds to go. Pascal Siakam sets an obvious illegal screen. I tweeted it out the NBA's video rule book with their video that said, you know, it explains you cannot have your feet out past your shoulders. You cannot lean into the screen, and that is an illegal screen. They showed a clip from the Bulls, and the screen was exactly. Basically exactly what Siakam did. So it is undoubtedly an illegal screen. Okay, now, did the illegal screen have anything to do with the third quarter? Nope, because it happened with 16 seconds to go in the game. So the third quarter where the Celtics were falling apart and playing like, you know, dog crap, the legal screen had nothing to do with that. The Celt did. The illegal screen had anything to do with them hitting nine three pointers. No. Joe loves to say there's always 10 to 15 possessions. That will change the. You know, how things go with the game. And there were at least 10 to 15 in this one that would have changed the end of this game. That. Forget 10 to 15. Two to five in, you know, the second half. Just two to five in the second half. That would have given the Celtics a lead in that situation where it wouldn't have mattered. And so there is merit to the. The ref thing, but it's like, enough, okay, Enough. It's three. Each one of these three losses has been, you know, the refs, the refs, the refs. Okay, we get it. We get it. Everybody's complaining about the refs, and maybe there's a bigger story there about how the refs. You know, what. What the refs are this year. I. I don't know. There seems to be, like, a lot of very vocal complaints. But look, I'm sure Joe is. Is protecting his guys. I'm sure Joe came out of a. A locker room where guys were pissed and, you know, probably wondering what was going on. So Joe will go out there in his press conference and try to capture the moment, right? Try to try to either advocate for his guys or send a message somehow. And so that. That was probably more of, hey, I'm gonna fight for these guys. I'm gonna let them know that we're, you know, that they're not, they're not going unheard. I'm sure there's some level of Joe sending a message to the league, but sending message to his locker room, like, I know you fought, I know you're tired. I know this is, you know, it's been a long kind of stretch here. Four games and six nights is very difficult. You just played a very high, high tempo game and there's, you know, you get to the end, you fight to the end, you're trying to fight through bad shooting and all of a sudden this illegal screen happens. And even though they still had an opportunity to, to defend Siakam, you could very well argue with the tie game. The Celtics would have had the ball with six seconds to go or 16 seconds to go. And the Pacers only had one timeout to give. And I mean one foul to give, I should say. And with 16 seconds, I mean anything, you could have gotten anything. So I, I understand where Joe is coming from. I hope that they understand that. You've. This is it. This is. You've done it three times and you've done it in three times in less than a week, right? Jalen did it twice, Joe did it. Now that's it. I think, I think you're out. Three strikes and you're out, right? That's the refs and, and who knows what the refs are going to do. Like, remember when Chris Paul got the delay a game because somebody checked in without their, their uniform tucked in and he started screaming, delay game, delay game. That's a Tech. That's a Tech. That's tech. And then the next game he got like 5 delay of games and like message received, right? I wouldn't be surprised if, you know, Celtics are in Miami in a couple of days. If Luca Garza or Namishkada gets hit with illegal screen after illegal screen after. Like one of those guys might fall out of that game. You know, it's like, hey, you want illegal screens? We'll show you illegal screens. Like any kind of borderline call will go against the Celtics again in Miami and Joe might get tossed and like that. That's where this is all going to go. You can feel something like that coming. I hope it's not, but you can kind of feel something like that coming because officials will sit there and be like, we're trying to do our best or whatever. And you can say like, well, your best isn't good enough because you missed the blatant illegal screen. And you know, there's a whole argument back and forth like, well, it's the. It's. It's the last possession, and you want to go relitigate all the illegal screens that Al Horford set. Or. You know what I mean? Like, or Kevin Garnett used to say, you open yourself up. And that's the other thing with the official thing. You open yourself up to this. You open yourself up to the relitigation of everything. You sit there and be like, okay, Jalen, you want. You want files to be called? No problem. We'll call them both ways. And next thing you know, Jalen gets called for a ton of fouls. Or someone else gets called. Like, it's very easy for messages to be sent the other way, too. Because who likes to be like, whatever your job is, do you want somebody to go on TV and start screaming about your job and how much you suck at it? There's a human nature element to this, which you don't want. You just want everybody to go there and try and do their best job and whatever. Is there a problem with the officiating? Clearly. But there's got to be a way to fix that. And making all of these excuses just, it's. I'm done with it. I. I'm done with it. I'm done with it. You guys are better than that. You're better than that. You can say something. I'm not saying don't say anything. I'm just saying, like, don't make it the whole thing. Jalen made it the whole thing the other night. Joe made it his whole thing in this one. Stop making it your whole thing. Make a point of it, Highlight it, and then let's just move on. So, okay, so the Celtics now have a couple days off. Host: John Karalis
John Karalis breaks down a painful Boston Celtics loss to the Indiana Pacers, focusing on yet another failed clutch-time execution and a highly controversial missed illegal screen call that fueled head coach Joe Mazzulla’s now-iconic, terse postgame rant. Karalis provides stats, context, and hard truths about the Celtics’ recent struggles (3 losses in 4 nights), individual performances, the ref controversy, and what really cost Boston this game.
“That was it. That’s how the whole thing went... and then Celtics PR said, 'Thanks, Joe,' and he walked off.” — John Karalis [33:20]
