Now on the Lockdown Celtics podcast, Jason Tatum triple double. I don't know how he keeps doing it, but a triple double. Jaylen Brown was dominant. Celtics win again. Welcome back to the welcome to the show. I'm John Corrales. The Boston Celtics get a big win over Miami sweep that season series and it's all about Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Jaylen Brown had 43 points. Jason Tatum had a triple double. I mean, come on, this is just incredible that they just keep doing this, that Jason is doing this. Later on in the third segment, I'll get to the other guys. Peyton Pritchard, Derrick White, Namish Keda. We'll get into some of the game flow here to start the, the, the, the podcast. In the second segment we'll get to the other, the defense. And I think Jalen Brown's gonna have to wait till the second segment, which is crazy to me because he had a 43 point night and was great. But let's start at the top, the tippity top, which was the Celtics Putting up a 53 point first quarter, 11 three pointers, Sam Houser going off. I honestly, I thought that Sam Houser was going to be challenging the market smart record again. He hits, he hits his first five three pointers, then gets one blocked, then misses one and then the flow of the game just kind of got away from him. And there were a couple of points in the second quarter that I thought, hey guys, let's, let's start looking for Sam Again, he was hitting a bunch of shots. No need Jason Tatum, for you to be looking for your offense this much. No need Jalen Brown for you to be looking for your offense this much. And of course, I was wrong. Those two guys looking for their offense was a huge part. Now Jalen got the thing started. He was awesome. He got. The first. Was 11 points of the game, 13 points of the game for the Celtics. He was just slicing through the Miami defense, getting to the rim, getting whatever he wants. And then the rest of the offense, then Hauser gets going. And. And it was a back and forth the first five minutes of this game. It was Tatum. I'm sorry, it was Jalen versus Bam. It was just a back and forth, but they got 20 points out of Jalen Brown. They get 17 out of Sam Houser. And I want to say about halfway through the first quarter, all of a sudden, the Celtics started playing some defense. And it's weird to say they started playing some defense while the Miami heat put up 33 points, but they had a lot of those halfway through the first quarter. Once the Celtics defense ramped up and the offense just kept on rolling, they put up a 53 point first quarter. This has to be demoralizing for Miami. You. You go out there, Bam is just hitting everything. You put up 33 points. It's 6 of 12 from 3. You get to the line, 9 of 12 from the line. You had five offensive rebounds that you were. You're forcing. You were. You know that they didn't force the Turnovers until the second quarter. Sorry. But they. They put up a 33 point quarter, and you go into the second quarter down 20. That's. That. That has to be just brutal to be on that side, to be on the bench and be like, hey, guys, we. We put up a really good offensive quarter and we gave up 53 points. The Celtics shot 20 of 28 overall, 11 of 15 from three in that first quarter, and just ran away with it. Set a tone early. Didn't turn the ball over at all. 13 assists, 0 turnovers in the first quarter. An offensive just clinic in that quarter. And it was all Jalen, it was all Sam. Jason started, okay, but for a guy that had a 25 point, 18 rebound, 11 assist, triple double, that didn't start coming until later on. But the. The Jason Tatum triple double. Listen, I. I've gone through my whole spiel about how my mind is blown by what Jayson Tatum is doing, and then he comes out and does something even more amazing, right? Like how. How Are we supposed to process this? How are we supposed to actually wrap our heads around what he's doing? He has a triple double now to go along with six double doubles to go along with a 32 point night to go along with player of the week. Already. It's been 320, 323 days. I just wrote it down. 323 days since Achilles surgery. So less than a year. Obviously, he was even counting it post game. I think he said 47 weeks. Is that 47 weeks? So he's already counting. Every Tuesday, it's another week. And he even said, I'm still not 100%, still trying to work my way up. I. I don't. If this is not 100, then, oh, my God. What's. What's coming? What's next? I guess he's missing some burst. I guess he's missing some level of, you know, still continuity. You could see him. There was one play where he had Peyton Pritchard open on a wing, and he drove, and he was late on the recognition, and he. He eventually got it to Peyton Pritchard, and he could see him motioning. He's like, it's on me. And he kind of did the. I should have passed it. And I think he's still working on his timing and all of that. But if. If this is what Tatum looks like when he's still searching for his. His best self. Well, what. How do you. How do you. How do you look around the NBA? How if you're the Knicks, if you're Detroit, if you're, I don't know, Cleveland or whomever. Miami. Miami could be a first round opponent. And you say, oh, this is. Tatum still has a ways to go. Okay, thanks. We. We quit. What are you supposed to do? They played zone. Miami played zone. And Tatum just. It's like, oh, thank you for serving me up. Openings on a silver platter. They went zone. And he just sliced it, cooked it, put it on a plate, ate it up, served up his teammates. Chef Tatum out there just slicing and dicing. It was like, you know, it was like one of those hibachi places. You know, he's out there just chopping things up, making one of those little onion towers where you get like the volcano with the fire coming out of it, and he's like flicking shrimp into Derek White's mouth like that. That's what Jason was doing. He's just like a chef to think. To think, boom, here's food, here's food, here's food. Here's everything. I'M going to eat, too. Boom boom Bo. Just having a blast at the Jason Tatum Hibachi restaurant. That's, that's what he was doing to these guys. It was just one big show and nothing they could do about it. A lot of food references on the podcast lately. I, I'm, I, I'm stumbling over myself because I'm supposed to be the guy that's like, oh, I, I've watched the game. I've processed it. I'm, you know, I've spent a lot of time immersed in basketball. I've played it, you know, I, I've, I dissect it. I understand it. And I am here on this podcast, on this, on your screen, on your phone, on your, in your car. And you're like, okay, John, hit me. Jason Tatum's awesome. Hit me. What do you got for me? And I'm like, I don't know. Jason's pretty good, I guess. That's all I got. It's all I can muster. Jason is really good. And I don't know, maybe the, the time away, maybe the time on the bench kind of opened his eyes to certain things. He hasn't said any of that. He. Maybe it just kind of through the immersion, he got some sort of, like, it seeped into his brain, and he's just seeing and recognizing things better. I, I don't. I don't know. Playing alongside maybe a, a version of Jalen Brown that's, that's even better than the Jaylen Brown than there was before. Maybe that's kind of opening some things. I, I don't, I don't know. Because this isn't supposed to happen. This is not supposed to happen like this. You're not supposed to come back at 10 months after 10 months from an Achilles, an Achilles injury. You're not supposed to come back from an Achilles and then within a month, not even a month back, already win a Player of the Week, already have a triple double and already have six double doubles already. Just slicing opponents. And I know it's the Miami Heat and they're not very good, but he has been great against good teams, too. It's not always going to be linear. We got to keep our, Keep that in our minds. It's not always going to be. There's going to be some ups and downs. I think they're supposed to be. I keep thinking, like, well, he's. It's going to be different in the playoffs. I don't know if it's going to be. I don't know. I'm here trying to be impartial about what's happening and explain what's happening. And all I got is go, Jason. It's been amazing. It's been amazing to watch, and it's so amazing that I'm only just really going to get into Jalen Brown when I come back because Jalen had a monster game, too, and that was incredibly important for the Celtics and for him. And I'm really impressed by how he was able to bounce back. I'll talk about that when I come back. Today's show is brought to you by Quo. Spring is a natural reset reset point. You come out, put up 53 points in the first quarter, which is amazing. Then it slows down and as, as Jalen said it, Joe said there is a tendency to kind of maybe you either take your foot off the gas or you start to take some bad shots. The Celtics didn't really do that, but Miami kind of found their little pockets of making a run and especially in the third quarter where the Celtics kind of stopped defending. I thought the first half defense was really good and why the Celtics were able to get separation, why they were able to get the the the lead up to 27 points that once the defense Stepped up and I'm going to get to Nimius K's defense because I thought there's so many underrated performances because Jason is like I said in my short, a robot. And Jalen is just, you know, having the best season of his life and is an all NBA player. The, the defense, well, a lot of players had under, you know, under the radar, great games. The defense, I would say midway through the fourth first quarter, through most of the second quarter was really good. And Jalen is part of that, right? Every, everybody contributes to that. The Celtics were pretty consistent in, in their defensive effort. They were pretty disciplined trying to make the right play. Offensively, I thought Jalen's the difference between Jalen in this game versus Jalen versus Atlanta. Aside from Atlanta having longer, tougher wings that you know to, to, to throw at him and aside from Jason Tatum being on the floor versus not being on the floor and taking some pressure off, thought Jalen was just under a lot more control. He just played. He understood what the defense was trying to do. He kind of varied his speeds, which you can be blistering fast and if you're not changing speeds, you're not going to be effective. And this is almost like what Jalen was in the first couple years of his career, which is a superior athlete that was just a straight line driver. I'm just going to try to dunk on every, I'm going to jump and try to drunk through, dunk through you. And I remember he used to get a ton of offensive fouls and teams could just line up and take those charges. And I always used to on this podcast say you can't be 100 mile an hour pitcher and not throw a change up. You can't just overpower everybody with 100 mile an hour fastball. Because if you just throw 100 miles an hour straight down the middle of the plate, eventually somebody's going to time it and hit it out of the park. Same concept in basketball. If you're just going to go in straight lines and just put your head down and go, well, eventually you're going to be able to time that. You're going to be able to get strips, you're going to be able to block shots, you're going to be able to take charges on a player like that. And that was kind of what was happening in Atlanta in this game. It was more under control, more varying speeds, more just, I'm going to go here, I'm going to hesitate. Oh, you've opened up a lane. Boom. I'm Getting to the rim and the threat of making the pass. And he did make plenty of passes, by the way. He had seven assists, right? So 43.7 assists. But I thought the seven assist night was better than the nine assist night the other night because the way he moved the ball, the way he kind of manipulated the defense just with his motions, his movements, just the threat of like, oh, he's, he sees this. He. The defense either freezes or steps and kind of gives him that opportunity. He's like, nope, never mind. I'm going to go to, I'm going to go to the rim. Done. Gotcha. So just a good, under control, disciplined game by Jalen Brown. And that's, you know, you couple that with 4 of 10, shooting from 3, getting to the line 5 of 7 times and. But the under control aspect, he shout, he shoots 17 of the 29. He had 29 shots. But not once did. I think Jaylen is trying to dominate this game where in Atlanta. I thought the whole time Jaylen is trying to dominate this game, right? I, I'm even surprised at the number 29 field goal attempts because that's. He took 20. He took fewer shots. 25, 26, whatever it was against Atlanta. And I see in the comment section people like, well, of course, look how many shots he took. No one else had a chance, but other people had a chance in this game. They had plenty of chances. And because Jaylen, this, this was just what was available to him. I thought the shots that he took there were maybe. I can think of one where he thought he was fouled and that was a bad one. I thought there was, I probably think of two or three from Jalen. There's one in the corner where he had a couple guys on him and Sam was, was open on the wing right at the hash mark. And I thought, okay, you gotta, you gotta recognize what's going on here. I thought, I thought Jalen might have been a little heat check territory there, but other than a couple, two, three, everything else was, was really good. So an incredible game from Jalen Brown. You get 68 points. Look at the combined numbers from Jalen and Jason. I'll just wrap up this segment by saying 68 points, 22 rebounds. It's a lot of the heavy lifting, Jaylen. Jayson Tatum had 18 rebounds, one shy of his career high. All of them defensive rebounds is the first time any Celtics has ever had 18 rebounds, all of them defensive. But 22 combined rebounds, 18 combined assists, 11 for Jason, seven for Jalen, one turnover for Jalen. Brown two for Jason Tatum. What a game. What a game. Give me all of Miami in the first round, please. Miami come out of that and. And fall. Be the. Be the seventh seed somehow begging you to be the seventh seed. I want to see that. That would be the easiest. And I, I've, I've said, like, I'm kind of sick of Miami, but if you want. If you want to send me to Miami in April to cover a sweep, two games in Miami, I, I won't book a game six in Miami. That's for sure. That that series would be over in four, five, maybe, but. All right. Namish Keda. The whole third segment will be the other guys. Namish, Keita. Incredible. Sam, Derek, Baylor, Peyton. All of those guys are next. Today's show is brought to you by fanduel. Had just an underrated game, but 16 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three blocks. One of the blocks. Was it on? It was on Jaime Hawkez. I want to say Hawkes was going up against maybe Hauser. No, Baylor Shireman. Baylor Scheiman in the, in the post. And I think it was Hawkez. Anyway, goes up over Shireman and then just out of nowhere, it's like a movie. Just a big slow motion shadow covers Hawkes's face and it's Neemi. And that's where you get like the slow motion and then smack, boom. And the ball flies out of bounds. Baylor just like, oh my God. Turns around, high fives. Nene, that was a great moment. He's like, that was an incredible play. I didn't even see you there. But that wasn't even the best defense that he played. I think Keda did a fantastic job on Bam Adebayo. Now, Bam was four of nine in the first quarter and he didn't exactly go off the rest of the way. So let's see. Bam finished with what a band. Finished with 29 points, 10 rebounds. You'd say, okay, well that's, that's a great, that's a great stat line. What are you talking about? His defense. But 11 of those points came in the first quarter. And then after that, I thought Keda was great. Joe, after the game, I love the way he put it. You talk about Kada's discipline. Neemi was able to move his feet, stay in front of Bam for the most part. Bam tried to get him up in the air with fakes and he just stayed down and he challenged and, and this is why it was such good defense, because it didn't put him to the line. Bam only got eight free throws and, and he was 4 of 8. Bam's trying to get to the line. He's already, you know, shooting. He's hitting threes, he's hitting those mid range jumpers. He wants to get to the line. Nemi stayed down, understands what's going on, the scouting report, he sticks to the scattering report, high IQ stuff. And you understand, hey, if Bam is going to drive and spin and fade and if he hits that shot, he hits that shot, it's not, it's not the end of the world. Those are the shots that you can live with. Spinning, fading two pointers from Bam out of bio. That's fine because it's not Tyler Hero from 3. It's not Jaime Haquez driving and drawing fouls. It's not Andrew Wiggins from three or Pell Larson. It's. It's just Bam fadeaways that are tough shots. If he makes them, he makes them. And that's one of Keita's kind of developmental points this year. Has been understanding the difference between that concept of hey, if somebody makes it, somebody takes a tough shot and he makes it, he makes it. That's it. Just tip your cap, come down and, and make sure that you're back on defense or you're coming back down, putting pressure on their defense. And Keda has had, and even recently has had the kind of tendency to try to block some shots that he has no business even trying to block. And I'm sure that the Celtics have kind of hammer this point home, especially when he's coming to help. If someone's driving and say Derrick White is covering him and Derek's made it a tough shot, you do not have to come over and additionally block the shot. Even though he, he did that and I just gave him credit for making a great block on Hawkez. You do have to understand that sometimes the tough shot is the tough shot. You got to get in position to rebound. And maybe because Jason is, is here now and also rebounding, that Kaden might feel the ability every once in a while you can take a calculated risk, but I think he has improved greatly at the discipline, understanding, footwork, positioning, challenging but not fouling and not over helping and all of that stuff, that that's what made Keda so good in this game. Team high plus 28. So for all the other performances, it was Keita who was on the floor for the best of the best and was a team high plus 28. I can't say enough about where he is, how far he's Come. And even, even this defensive game that he played against Bam is much better than any individual one on one performance than he might have had all season long. It's, it's better than he was on day one. It's probably better than he was before the All Star break. So his development, his progress has been, it's been maybe a little too unheralded, but has been amazing. Every question that I've had about Neemi before the season started has been blown out of the water. I am massively impressed by everything that he's done. Not having talked about some of the offensive moves, some of the footwork, but everybody wants to look at that and he, he, he has some of that in his bag. But the discipline, the basketball, just the pure basketball of understanding, executing, learning, whatever, whatever I thought he was coming into the season, that's all gone. That's all gone. This is a completely different person. No, actually I don't even want to say that. He is a massively improved player. He is the same person that he was. He just wasn't as good. He's, it's, I want to be clear. I want to give him the full credit that he deserves. He is still the same person and, but he is a much, much improved player than he was before. And I can go on and on and on, but I have to keep moving on to the next guys. But just, yeah, can't say enough about Keda. Sam Houser. I'm in minute 32. Sam Houser had 23 points. I'm just getting to Sam Houser. I mentioned him a little bit earlier, but the again the shooting, sure, great. Five of seven from three but also four of four inside the three point line. The just not forcing some of the shots, taking the. You know what, you're going to close out hard on me. I'll take that dribble. I'll step into a 20 footer, a 15 footer and be happy with it and hit it right. That's great. So great job by Sam Houser who, who played really, really well. Great game from him. Derrick White. I can't believe this is like 33 minutes into this podcast and I'm only just getting to the Derrick White play. His play at the end of the first quarter was elite. Elite, elite. Amazing. They went on an 8, 0 run. Again, I say this a million times every day. As you know, when I talk about clutch play, those clutch moments don't have to happen in the fourth quarter if you're new. That's one of my favorite concepts. Clutch basketball doesn't happen at the end of the game all the time. At the end of the second quarter, Derrick White was as clutch as anybody. The lead had gone down to 15, right? It was 20, 22, 23 point lead, down to 15, three minutes to go. The Heat have an opportunity, get it down to single digits, head into halftime with, you know, feeling good or go into or. Derek White does what he does, helps fuel an 8, 0 run. Gets a couple of layups. One of them just kind of fell into his hands. The. The alley oop, the play where they get a stop. Six and a half seconds to go. He busts down the left slot, gets a pass, basically a touch pass. Alley oop, to J. To Jalen, who floats in and lays it up. Derek gives it a little hop and he understands. Oh, one and a half seconds left. I better turn around because we just left some guys in the dust. And he went from baseline to baseline and basically got back to Pell Larson as he was catching the touchdown pass. It was supposed to be a wide open layup, and that was a critical play because you just made a play. If you had given up a touchdown pass. Big pop at Miami in the Casaya Center. Miami goes into the locker room, oh, yeah, we got him. We got him. And it's. It's like a 13 point game. And you just say, oh, man, that sucks. And they've got this momentum and you come out, who knows how the third quarter goes. Instead, Derek White gets all the way back, challenges the shot. I thought he blocked it, but what was a wide open layup. Larson just has to loft it up above Derrick White and it goes up off the top of the backboard. What an amazing play. After the game, Jalen was like, I don't know how the hell he did that. That's some defensive player of the year stuff. That's in 10 seconds. I timed it less than 10 seconds. Derek goes from one baseline, sprints up the floor, catches the pass, alley oop, basically touches the other baseline, gets back in time to contest Pell Larson at the rim. 10 seconds. Up, back, baseline, baseline, baseline. Six and a half seconds of play. That is elite, elite, elite defense. Derrick White, he only took four shots, but he was great in this game. I'm out of time, but Peyton Pritchard hit some big shots. 14 points was a plus 20. Baylor Scheireman, 8 points, hit a couple of threes. So much good play in this Luca Garza. Jordan Walsh only played five minutes, but was impactful. Had a big block shot in there. I know it's Miami. They're still a winning team, but they're a playing team. But huge, huge game. Nice. So nice to see, obviously Tatum, obviously Jalen, everybody. This has been a big 36 minutes of me gushing, but that's where the Celtics are right now. I can't find fault with these guys sometimes. Much more coming up. We'll, I'll have to kind of like look back at this and there's so much more to talk about, but we'll get get to that on the next podcast. Thank you for listening. I do appreciate you being here. Enjoy this win. It's a great win. The Celtics are now three games up in the lost column on New York. Their magic number is four. Any combination of Celtics wins, Knicks losses totaling four seals the second seed. I consider this done like the second seed is Boston's. It is going to be almost impossible for New York to catch them, but technically it still is. So just enjoy it. Enjoy it.
